The problem of submerged body motion in a frozen channel is considered. The fluid in the channel is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible. Fluid flow is the potential. The ice cover has non-uniform compression along the principal coordinates. The damping of hydroelastic waves generated by the motion of submerged body is modeled by taking into account porosity of ice. The submerged body is modeled as a dipole, the potential of which is determined using mirror images from the channel walls. The main problem of the submerged body motion at constant speed along the central line of the channel is considered. Two subproblems are addressed: comparison of damping effects of the porosity and viscosity of ice and investigation of effects of symmetrically variable ice thickness relative to the central line of the channel. It was found that the most important compressive stress is the stress in the direction of the motion of the submerged body. The speed of the body, which was subcritical for uncompressed ice, may become critical or supercritical. Compressive stresses perpendicular to the direction of motion do not qualitatively change the character of the ice response. These stresses, in combination with compressive stresses along the direction of motion, strengthen the effect of the latter, making the transition from subcritical to supercritical regime faster. Simple Summary: The Retinta cattle breed from Spain is derived from two ancestral bovine lineages, which are clearly characterized based on coat color: blond and brown/red. Currently, despite a great level of admixture, two pure genetic lines remain (Retinto Extremeño and Andalusian Blond). This study analyzed the genealogy and genetics of over 22,000 animals, revealing high genetic diversity overall, but lower diversity within each subpopulation, with the Retinto line having the greatest influence on the breed. A special subgroup within the Andalusian Blond lineage, known as the Tamarona cow, was identified as genetically unique and should be protected due to its small population size. Preserving genetic diversity within the Retinta breed is crucial to ensure sustainable breeding in the breed's natural environment. The Retinta breed, an autochthonous type of Spanish beef cattle, is highly adapted to breeding in its natural environment, which is characterized by a Mediterranean climate. The origins of this breed can be traced to two ancestral bovine stocks, which gave rise to distinct morphotypes differentiated primarily by coat color, alongside other significant traits such as growth, morphological conformation and temperament. Specifically, one morphotype comprises blond animals (Rubia Andaluza), genetically resembling the ancestral Bos taurus Aquitanicus, while the other encompasses brown- and red-colored animals (Retinta Extremeña) originating from Bos taurus Turdenatus stock. Over decades, these populations have undergone hybridization, leading to a unified population, albeit with the original subpopulations largely maintaining their genetic integrity. The objective of this study was to undertake genealogical and genomic characterization of these genetic lines, including a particular subpopulation within the blond animals (Tamarona cow). To achieve this, the genealogical records of 22,004 active animals were analyzed, and over 63,000 SNPs from a total of 1030 animals were examined for genomic characterization. Genealogical analysis revealed pedigree completeness and a high level of effective population size (Ne) across the entire population, yet relatively low Ne values within each pure line (ranging from 28.38 to 34.47). These findings underscore the ongoing efforts of the National Association of Retinta Breeders (ACRE) over the past decades to mitigate the loss of variability in this breed. The genomic characterization highlights the persistent differences within the original population and the predominant influence of the Retinto line within the current breed, as evidenced by principal component analysis (PCA) and admixture analysis. Furthermore, the identification of the Tamarona subpopulation within the blond lineage underlines its unique genetic composition, warranting its recognition as an official genetic line within the current Retinta breed. Given the small population size of these lines, particularly the Tamarona subpopulation, protective measures are imperative to preserve this distinct gene pool. The characteristics of linear hydroelastic waves propagating in a channel covered with compressed ice are investigated. The channel has a rectangular cross-section and is assumed to be infinite in length. The fluid in the channel is non-viscous and incompressible; its flow is potential. The ice cover is modelled by an elastic plate of constant thickness frozen to the channel walls. Principal attention is paid to the investigation of the influence of ice compression on the parameters of hydroelastic waves. The problem is solved in a coupled hydroelastic formulation. The profiles of propagating waves in the channel are sought in the form of series on the normal modes of a dry plate. The modes are defined analytically through trigonometric and hyperbolic functions. It is shown that compression in the longitudinal and transverse directions has different effects on the dispersion relations of these hydroelastic waves, their shape and phase, as well as on the critical velocities and strains distribution. The shiitake mushroom (Lentinula edodes) is globally valued for its nutrition and medicinal properties. New technologies aim to increase production with less environmental impact, considering materials such as charcoal for substrate enrichment. This manuscript evaluated the effect of fine charcoal (FC) on the substrate formulation of two L. edodes strains (LED 20/11 and LED 20/12). The substrate consisted of 72% eucalyptus sawdust, 12.5% rice bran, 12.5% wheat bran, and 3% calcium carbonate (control treatment without charcoal). Treatments with FC proportionally reduced the use of sawdust, with doses of 1%, 2%, 4%, 8%, and 16% (relative to the substrate material). Yield, mushroom number, and mushroom weight were evaluated. The concentration of FC significantly affected the parameters analyzed, especially at the 4% dose. A negative correlation between mushroom number and weight was observed. For yield, the control treatment and the lowest dose of FC (1%) had the highest yields for the first harvest. Strain LED 20/12 showed lower yield variability due to the percentage of FC applied to the substrate. The incorporation of FC into the substrate for shiitake cultivation demonstrates efficacy; however, both the concentration and strain used are limiting factors for its applicability. Simple Summary: Uterine health is crucial for cows to become pregnant and maintain farm profitability. However, when cows suffer from uterine diseases, it not only affects their fertility but also leads to increased antibiotic usage, impacting both animal health and farm economics. Probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria, offer a promising solution to improve cow health and reproductive success. Research suggests that certain probiotics can enhance cow fertility. Administering these probiotics directly into the cow's vagina may strengthen uterine health, especially after giving birth. While initial findings are promising, further large-scale studies are needed to confirm their effectiveness. This paper underscores the importance of establishing clear guidelines for using probiotics in cow management, including selecting appropriate strains and administering them correctly. Moving forward, continued research is necessary to fully understand the benefits of probiotics in maintaining cow health and improving fertility. Uterine disease in cattle impairs reproductive performance and profitability and increases antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance. Thus, probiotics offer a promising alternative therapy. This review presents conceptual findings on the efficacy of probiotics in managing uterine diseases and fertility in cows. Probiotics containing Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. individually or as composite formulations are known to improve fertility. Strategic intravaginal administration of these formulations would likely enhance uterine immunity, particularly during the postpartum period. While current findings on the benefits to uterine health are encouraging, there is still significant knowledge missing, including a lack of empirical information from large-scale field trials. This review underscores the need for evidence-based guidelines for probiotics, such as genomic selection of formulations, targeted delivery, or potential synergy with other interventions. The problem of periodic oscillations of a dipole, specifically its strength, along the principal axes in a three-dimensional frozen channel is considered. The key points of the problem are taking into account the linear thickness of ice across the channel and ice porosity within Darcy's law. The fluid in the channel is inviscid and incompressible; the flow is potential. It is expected that the oscillations of a small radius dipole well approximate the oscillations of a small radius sphere at a sufficient depth of immersion of the dipole. It was found that during oscillations along the channel and vertical oscillations, waves are generated in the channel, propagating along the channel with a frequency equal to the frequency of dipole oscillations. The results of the study are aimed at developing a nonlinear strain model for reinforced concrete beam elements in the general case of force actions and temperature effects for different durations. As a rule, temperature effects on structures involve temperature drops, causing heterogeneity of mechanical and rheological properties of concrete and reinforcement. The article has approximating expressions needed to take into account the effects of temperature and heating time on the values of temperature-induced strain and mechanical and rheological properties of heavy concretes with C30–C60 strength classes. The properties of concrete and rebars are heterogeneous from top to bottom and across the width of the cross section. A physically nonlinear problem is solved using the method of elastic solutions combined with the method of stepwise increases in temperature and force loading. The cooling of a heated reinforced concrete element to normal temperature is considered a short-term effect. Strength criteria of portions of a concrete cross section, crack closure conditions, and the ability of cracked sections to take loads in compression amid a change in the sign of stresses are determined. The stress–strain state (SSS) analysis of reinforced concrete beams, made according to the proposed method, is compared with the experimental studies using (i) values of thermal bending moments in statically indeterminate structures, (ii) cracking forces, and (iii) values of deformations (elongations and curvatures) of the elements in the longitudinal axis. Good agreement between the calculated and experimental values of controllable criteria confirms the reliability of physical relationships (i) developed for heterogeneous reinforced concrete beam elements and (ii) applied to the complex cases of temperature and force effects. Ultrasound-based ligament strain estimation shows promise in non-invasively assessing knee joint collateral ligament behavior and improving ligament balancing procedures. However, the impact of ultrasound-based strain estimation residual errors on in-silico arthroplasty predictions remains unexplored. We investigated the sensitivity of post-arthroplasty kinematic predictions to ultrasound-based strain estimation errors compared to clinical inaccuracies in implant positioning.Two cadaveric legs were submitted to active squatting, and specimen-specific rigid computer models were formulated. Mechanical properties of the ligament model were optimized to reproduce experimentally obtained tibiofemoral kinematics and loads with minimal error. Resulting remaining errors were comparable to the current state-of-the-art. Ultrasound-derived strain residual errors were then introduced by perturbing lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) stiffness. Afterwards, the implant position was perturbed to match with the current clinical inaccuracies reported in the literature. Finally, the impact on simulated post-arthroplasty tibiofemoral kinematics was compared for both perturbation scenarios. Ultrasound-based errors minimally affected kinematic outcomes (mean differences < 0.73° in rotations, 0.1 mm in translations). Greatest differences occurred in external tibial rotations (−0.61° to 0.73° for MCL, −0.28° to 0.27° for LCL). Comparatively, changes in implant position had larger effects, with mean differences up to 1.95° in external tibial rotation and 0.7 mm in mediolateral translation. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the ultrasound-based assessment of collateral ligament strains has the potential to enhance current computer-based pre-operative knee arthroplasty planning. The evolution of technological tools, namely affordable sensors for data collection, and the growing concerns about maintaining roads in adequate conditions have promoted the development of continuous pavement monitoring systems. This paper presents the installation and use of an innovative pavement monitoring system, which was developed to measure the effects of vehicle loads and temperature on the performance of a pavement structure. The sensors used are based on fibre Bragg grating optical technology, collecting data about the strains imposed in the pavement and the temperature at which those measurements are made. The site selection for the system's installation and the essential installation details to ensure successful data collection are addressed. A calibration procedure was implemented by performing falling weight deflectometer tests and passing preweighed heavy vehicles over the sensors. In addition to validating the system installation, the results obtained in the calibration confirmed the importance of adequately choosing the distance between sensors. Differences of 50 mm in the position of the load may cause differences of about 20% to 25% in the resulting strains. These results confirmed the importance of increasing the sensor concentration in wheel paths. Furthermore, for loads between 25 kN and 65 kN, raising the temperature by 8 °C caused an increase of about 20% in the horizontal tensile strains measured in the pavement. In summary, it was possible to conclude that this innovative system is capable of capturing the effects of temperature and vehicle speed on the response of the pavement, which may be considered an advantage of this type of monitoring system when compared to those that are only used to determine the loads applied to the pavement or to characterise the type of vehicle. Electromagnetic forming is applied to form metal sheet parts from both non-ferrous and ferrous materials. In this paper, the electromagnetic forming behavior of aluminum alloy, copper and steel sheets was investigated through experiments. The disk-shaped specimens were electromagnetically free bulged with increasing deformation energies and parts with different deformation depths were obtained. The deformation was done with and without clamping the movement of the specimens' edges. The specimens were printed with a mesh of diametrical lines and concentric circles with a predetermined pitch. The mesh served to determine the displacements in the mesh nodes after the deformation of the specimens, with which the axial, radial and circumferential strains were then calculated. The experimental data obtained was subjected to statistical correlation and regression analyses, and the mathematical models for the three main strains in each material were established. The strains of AlMn0.5Mg0.5 and Cu-OF parts are maximum in the center and have a similar variation, while the FeP04 parts have the maximum strains in an intermediate zone between the center and the edge. Alpha-synucleinopathies (α-synucleinopathies) such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and multiple system atrophy (MSA) are all characterized by aggregates of alpha-synuclein (α-syn), but display heterogeneous clinical and pathological phenotypes. The mechanism underlying this heterogeneity is thought to be due to diversity in the α-syn strains present across the diseases. α-syn obtained from the post-mortem brain of patients who lived with these conditions is heterogenous, and displays a different protease sensitivity, ultrastructure, cytotoxicity, and seeding potential. The primary aim of this review is to summarize previous studies investigating these concepts, which not only reflect the idea of different syn strains being present, but demonstrate that each property explains a small part of a much larger puzzle. Strains of α-syn appear at the center of the correlation between α-syn properties and the disease phenotype, likely influenced by external factors. There are considerable similarities in the properties of disease-specific α-syn strains, but MSA seems to consistently display more aggressive traits. Elucidating the molecular underpinnings of heterogeneity amongst α-synucleinopathies holds promise for future clinical translation, allowing for the development of personalized medicine approaches tackling the root cause of each α-synucleinopathy. Influenza is a respiratory disease caused by the influenza virus, which is highly transmissible in humans. This paper presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and test-negative designs (TNDs) to assess the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of seasonal influenza vaccines (SIVs) in humans aged 15 to 64 years. An electronic search to identify all relevant studies was performed. The outcome measure of interest was VE on laboratory-confirmed influenza (any strain). Quality assessment was performed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for RCTs and the ROBINS-I tool for TNDs. The search identified a total of 2993 records, but only 123 studies from 73 papers were included in the meta-analysis. Of these studies, 9 were RCTs and 116 were TNDs. The pooled VE was 48% (95% CI: 42–54) for RCTs, 55.4% (95% CI: 43.2–64.9) when there was a match between the vaccine and most prevalent circulating strains and 39.3% (95% CI: 23.5–51.9) otherwise. The TNDs' adjusted VE was equal to 39.9% (95% CI: 31–48), 45.1 (95% CI: 38.7–50.8) when there was a match and 35.1 (95% CI: 29.0–40.7) otherwise. The match between strains included in the vaccine and strains in circulation is the most important factor in the VE. It increases by more than 25% when there is a match with the most prevalent circulating strains. The laboratorial method for confirmation of influenza is a possible source of bias when estimating VE. In recent years, layered chalcogenides have attracted interest for their appealing thermoelectric properties. We investigated the Ge2Sb2Te5 compound in two different stacking sequences, named stacking 1 (S1) and stacking 2 (S2), wherein the Ge and Sb atomic positions can be interchanged in the structure. The compound unit cell, comprising nine atoms, is made of two layers separated by a gap. We show, using the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, that the bonding across the layers has characteristics of transit region bonding, though with a close resemblance to closed-shell bonding. Both S1 and S2 are shown to bear a similar small gap. The full determination of their thermoelectric properties, including the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and electronic and lattice thermal conductivities, was carried out by solving the Boltzmann transport equation. We show that stacking 1 exhibits a larger Seebeck coefficient and smaller electrical conductivity than stacking 2, which is related to their small electronic gap difference, and that S1 is more suitable for thermoelectric application than S2. Moreover, under certain conditions of temperature and doping level, it could be possible to use S1-Ge2Sb2Te5 as both a p and n leg in a thermoelectric converter. Under biaxial, tensile and compressive strains, we observe that the thermoelectric properties are improved for both S1 and S2. Furthermore, the increase in the power factor of S1 in the cross-plane direction, namely perpendicular to the gap between the layers, shows that strains can counteract the electronic transport hindrance due to the gap. The article concerns the application of the FEM method for the prediction of stress and deformation states in a workpiece during the thread rolling process (TR). The analysis covered a new kinematic variant of the TR process in which the basket of the head rotates and is torque-driven, while the workpiece is stationary and the head with the rollers moves axially relative to the workpiece. The TR process was considered as a geometrical and physical non-linear initial and boundary problem with non-linear, moving, and variable in time and space boundary conditions. The boundary conditions in the contact areas of the tool with the workpiece were unknown. An updated Lagrange (UL) description was used to describe the physical phenomena at a typical incremental step. The states of strain and strain rate were described by non-linear relationships without linearization. New discrete systems of motion and deformation equations of the object in the TR were introduced, which take into account the change in the stiffness of the system during the TR process. This equation was solved by the central differences method (explicit). The material parameters were estimated during tensile tests to determine the characteristics of the C45 steel, and a new semi-empirical method was used to determine the relationship yield stress, effective true strain, and effective true strain rate in the thread rolling process. A modified Cowper–Symonds material model was also used to model the displacement process of the wedge on an elastic/visco-plastic body reflecting the TR process. A non-linear dependency of material hardening module depending on strain and strain rate was introduced. To confirm the plane state of deformation and spatial state of stress, an experimental investigation was carried out. The computer models were validated, and a good convergence of the results was obtained. Applications in the ANSYS/LS-Dyna program were developed to simulate the TR process. The developed applications enable a comprehensive time analysis of the states of displacement, strain, and stress occurring in an object consisting of a workpiece (shaft) and a tool (roller) for the case of a plane strain state and a spatial stress state. Exemplary results of numerical analyzes are presented to explain the influence of the friction coefficient on the condition of the thread quality, and the state of deformations and stresses were shown. The noctuid moth soybean looper (SBL), Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) is an economically important pest of soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) in the southeastern United States. It has characteristics that are of particular concern for pest mitigation that include a broad host range, the capacity for annual long-distance flight, and resistance in some populations to important pesticides such as pyrethroids and chitin synthesis inhibitor. The biology of SBL in the United States resembles that of the fellow noctuid fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), a major pest of corn and several other crops. FAW exhibits a population structure in that it can be divided into two groups (host strains) that differ in their host preferences but are broadly sympatric and exhibit incomplete reproductive isolation. In this paper, strategies used to characterize the FAW strains were applied to SBL to assess the likelihood of population structure in the United States. Evidence is presented for two SBL strains that were defined phylogenetically and display differences in the proportions of a small set of genetic markers. The populations exhibit evidence of reproductive barriers sufficient to allow persistent asymmetry in the distribution of mitochondrial haplotypes. The identified molecular markers will facilitate studies characterizing the behaviors of these two populations, with relevance to pest mitigation and efforts to prevent further dispersal of the resistance traits. The paper considers the visco-elastic response of the ice cover in a channel under an external load moving with constant speed along the center line. The channel has a rectangular cross-section with a finite depth and width. The fluid in the channel is inviscid and incompressible and its motion is potential. The fluid is covered by a thin sheet of ice frozen to the channel walls. The ice thickness varies linearly symmetrically across the channel, being lowest at the center of the channel and highest at the channel walls. Ice deflections and strains in the ice cover are independent of time in the coordinate system moving with the load. The problem is solved numerically using Fourier transform along the channel and the method of normal modes across the channel. The series coefficients for normal modes are determined by truncation for the resulting infinite systems of linear algebraic equations. The ice deflections and strains in the ice plate are investigated and compared to the case of constant mean ice thickness. Based on the high nutrients of oat and the demand of health-conscious consumers for value-added and functional foods, fermented oat beverages have great market prospects. This review summarizes the applicable strains, processing techniques and health benefits of fermented oat beverages. Firstly, the fermentation characteristics and conditions of the applicable strains are systematically described. Secondly, the advantages of pre-treatment processes such as enzymatic hydrolysis, germination, milling and drying are summarized. Furthermore, fermented oat beverages can increase the nutrient content and reduce the content of anti-nutritional factors, thereby reducing some risk factors related to many diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. This paper discusses the current research status of fermented oat beverages, which has academic significance for researchers interested in the application potential of oat. Despite the global contribution of aquaculture as an important pillar for food and nutritional security, its rapid growth has been hampered by inadequate and poor-quality seed due to inbreeding, hybridization of related stocks, and poor-quality broodstock. Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Nile tilapia in natural water bodies of Uganda has been studied but research gaps remain on the morphometric characterization of farmed O. niloticus in Uganda, which hinders selective breeding initiatives. This study characterized O. niloticus from various farmers in Uganda's Southwestern Highland Agro-Ecological Zone using their morphometric traits. In this study, 8 morphometric traits were taken on each of the 258 fish samples collected with at least 30 samples sampled from each pond system in the zone. The morphometric data generated were analyzed using multivariate analysis. In order to delineate the populations from the different ponds, Discriminant Function analysis (DFA) was performed on the dataset and distribution plots generated to test on the purity of the strains. There were significant differences in the morphometric traits among the populations with the Victoria fish population having the highest standard length while the Kyoga population had the highest weight. Morphometric characterization grouped the fish into three clusters, indicative that fish farms in the zone possibly had different sources of fish seed. The condition factor, which is a measure of wellbeing of the fish, showed that all the populations displayed an isometric growth which is indicative of the fish growing in length as it is in weight. The results of this study provide evidence that local O. niloticus from different farms display differences in body shape as a result of using fish seed from different sources. This aspect can be applied in selective breeding programs after establishing the genetic structure of the farmed Nile tilapia stock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The linear two-dimensional problem of interaction between an hydroelastic wave propagating along an elastic floating ice plate with built-in vertical rigid plate is studied. The fluid under the ice is inviscid and incompressible. The fluid depth is finite. The deflection of the ice plate is described by the linear theory of thin elastic plates. The flow under the ice is potential. The total velocity potential is decomposed into the potential of the incident wave, even potential caused by the vertical motion of the rigid plate, and an odd potential caused by the rotation of the rigid plate. The vertical mode method is used. The third potential is obtained by solving a mixed boundary-value problem numerically using Chebyshev polynomials. The solution is validated by analysis of its convergence. The first and second potentials, and the corresponding deflections and strains of the ice plate, are obtained analytically. The motions of the rigid plate, as well as deflection and strains in the floating plate, are numerically analyzed. This article concerns the application of the FEM method for the prediction of stress and deformation states in the workpiece during diamond sliding burnishing (DSB). An updated Lagrange (UL) description was used to describe the phenomena at a typical incremental step. The states of strain and strain rate are described by non-linear relationships without linearization. The material parameters were estimated during tensile tests to determine the characteristics of the 41Cr4 steel. Its hardness was also tested. Its aim was to prepare a table with the material properties of the above-mentioned steel and its implementation for numerical analyses. A Cowper–Symonds material model was used to model the displacement process of the wedge on an elastic/visco-plastic body reflecting the DSB process. The computer model was validated, and a good convergence of the results was obtained. Applications in the ANSYS/LS-Dyna program were developed to simulate the process of DSB. The results of numerical analyses were presented, among others, to explain the influence of the rake angle on the condition of the surface after machining, as well as the phenomenon of chip formation. The article presents research on the performance of different distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) tools, including both layered cables and monolithic composite sensors. The main need for the presented research was related to the growing applications of the DFOS techniques for the measurements of cracked concrete structures. There are no clear guidelines on the required parameters of the DFOS tools, which, despite their different designs, are offered for the same purpose (strain sensing). The state-of-the-art review and previous experiences show noticeable differences in the quality of the results depending on the applied DFOS tool. The technical construction of selected solutions was described with its theoretical consequences, and then laboratory tests on full-size reinforced concrete beams were discussed. Beams equipped with embedded tools were investigated in four-point bending tests, causing the formation of multiple cracks in the tension zone along the beams' length. The results in the form of strain profiles registered by selected DFOS tools were analysed regarding the qualitative (crack detection) and quantitative (width estimation) crack assessment. The comparison between crack-induced strain profiles was based on a new parameter called crack shape coefficient CSC, which could be applied to assess the effectiveness of the particular DFOS tool in crack detection and analysis. It was one of the world's first research allowing for such direct comparison between the layered and monolithic sensing tools. The summary indicates practical guidelines referring to the preferable design of the tools best suitable for crack measurements, as well as the field proofs based on data from two concrete bridges in Germany. This is a monocentric and cross-sectional study conducted at the COVID-19 Division of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Unit and Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of Policlinico di Bari, in Bari, Italy, between September 2020 and April 2022. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of severe-critical COVID-19 illness requiring access to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) among 287 pregnant patients, and possible correlations between the SARS-CoV-2 variants, the specific pandemic wave (dominated by wild, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron strains), and severe-critical adverse maternal outcomes. The prevalence of severe-critical COVID-19 illness was 2.8% (8/287), reaching 4.9% (8/163) excluding the 4th wave (Omicron dominant). The Delta variant determined the highest risk ratio and odds for access to the ICU due to severe-critical COVID-19-related symptoms compared to the other variants (wild, Alpha, Omicron). During the third wave (Delta), the ICU cases underwent a higher rate of hyperimmune plasma infusion (75%), antibiotic therapy (75%), and remdesivir (33%); all of the patients were intubated. During the Omicron wave, the patients were asymptomatic or with few symptoms: most of them (70%) were vaccinated with a median of two doses. The article presents research on the performance of composite and monolithic sensors for distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS). The introduction summarises the design of the sensors and the theoretical justification for such an approach. Lessons learned during monitoring cracked concrete are summarised to highlight what features of the DFOS tools are the most favourable from the crack analysis point of view. Later, the results from full-size laboratory concrete specimens working in a cracked state were presented and discussed in reference to conventional layered sensing cables. The research aimed to compare monolithic sensors and layered cables embedded in the same reinforced concrete elements, which is the main novelty. The performance of each DFOS nondestructive tool was investigated in the close vicinity of the cracks—both the new ones, opening within the tension zone, and the existing ones, closing within the compression zone. The qualitative (detection) and quantitative (widths estimation) crack analyses were performed and discussed. Shape sensing is the reconstruction of the displacement field of a structure from some discrete surface strain measurements and is a key technology for structural health monitoring. The aim of this paper is to compare two approaches to shape sensing that have been shown to be more efficient, especially for aircraft structures applications, in terms of required input strain measurements: the Ko's Displacement Theory and the Modal Method. An object of the shape-sensing analysis is the half-wing of a multirotor UAV. The approaches are summarized in order to set the framework for the numerical comparative investigation. Then, the multirotor UAV is presented and a finite element model of its half-wing is used to simulate the static response to straight-and-level flight conditions. For a given common set of surface strain measurement points, Ko's Displacement Theory and the Modal Method are compared in terms of accuracy of the reconstructed half-wing deflection and twist angle. The Modal Method is shown to be more accurate than Ko's Displacement Theory, especially for the evaluation of the deflection field. Further numerical analyses show that the Modal Method is influenced by the set of mode shapes included in the analysis and that excellent reconstructed deflections can be obtained with a reduced number of sensors, thus assessing the approach as an efficient shape-sensing tool for aircraft structures real applications. α-Synuclein (αS) is remarkable for both its extensive conformational plasticity and pathologic prion-like properties. Physiologically, αS may populate disordered monomeric, helically folded tetrameric, or membrane-bound oligomeric states. Pathologically, αS may assemble into toxic oligomers and subsequently fibrils, the prion-like transmission of which is implicated in a class of neurodegenerative disorders collectively termed α-synucleinopathies. Notably, αS does not adopt a single "amyloid fold", but rather exists as structurally distinct amyloid-like conformations referred to as "strains". The inoculation of animal models with different strains induces distinct pathologies, and emerging evidence suggests that the propagation of disease-specific strains underlies the differential pathologies observed in patients with different α-synucleinopathies. The characterization of αS strains has provided insight into the structural basis for the overlapping, yet distinct, symptoms of Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, and dementia with Lewy bodies. In this review, we first explore the physiological and pathological differences between conformational states of αS. We then discuss recent studies on the influence of micro-environmental factors on αS species formation, propagation, and the resultant pathological characteristics. Lastly, we review how an understanding of αS conformational properties has been translated to emerging strain amplification technologies, which have provided further insight into the role of specific strains in distinct α-synucleinopathies, and show promise for the early diagnosis of disease. There is an interesting potential for the use of GFRP-pultruded profiles in hybrid GFRP-concrete structural elements, either for new constructions or for the rehabilitation of existing structures. This paper provides experimental and numerical investigations on the flexural performance of reinforced concrete (RC) specimens composite with encased pultruded GFRP I-sections. Five simply supported composite beams were tested in this experimental program to investigate the static flexural behavior of encased GFRP beams with high-strength concrete. Besides, the effect of using shear studs to improve the composite interaction between the GFRP beam and concrete as well as the effect of web stiffeners of GFRP were explored. Encasing the GFRP beam with concrete enhanced the peak load by 58.3%. Using shear connectors, web stiffeners, and both improved the peak loads by 100.6%, 97.3%, and 130.8%, respectively. The GFRP beams improved ductility by 21.6% relative to the reference one without the GFRP beam. Moreover, the shear connectors, web stiffeners, and both improved ductility by 185.5%, 119.8%, and 128.4%, respectively, relative to the encased reference beam. Furthermore, a non-linear Finite Element (FE) model was developed and validated by the experimental results to conduct a parametric study to investigate the effect of the concrete compressive strength and tensile strength of the GFRP beam. Background and Objectives: Table tennis represents one of the fastest ball games in the world and, as such, is characterized by unique physiological demands. Despite its popularity, there is a dearth of data related to table-tennis-related risk factors and injuries. Therefore, the present review was conducted to fill in this gap of knowledge. Material and Methods: The present review was designed as a scoping review. Eleven online databases were searched with no language/date limitations. Results: Forty-two investigations were retained in the present review. These studies indicated that tenosynovitis, benign muscle injuries, strains, and sprains were the most common injury types. In order, the most commonly affected anatomical regions were the lower limb, shoulder, spine, knee, upper limb, and trunk. When comparing the injury occurrence between training and competition, the results were contradictory. National/international athletes had higher indices of injury than regional players, even though other investigations failed to replicate such findings. According to some scholars, there was a difference between female and male athletes: in females, more injuries involved the upper limbs when compared to men who had more injuries to the lower limbs, while other studies did not find differences in terms of gender. Conclusions: Table tennis is generally considered at lower risk for injuries than other sports. However, the present scoping review showed that injuries can occur and affect a variety of anatomic regions. Sports scientists/physicians could utilize the information contained in the current review for devising ad hoc programs to adopt an effective/appropriate prevention strategy and to monitor table tennis players' training load and to achieve maximal fitness, as these will reduce the risk of injuries. However, most of the studies included in our scoping review are methodologically weak or of low-to-moderate evidence, being anecdotal or clinical case reports/case series, warranting caution when interpreting our findings and, above all, further high-quality research in the field is urgently needed. This study presents experimental and numerical investigations on seven one-way, reinforced concrete (RC) slabs with a new technique of slab weight reduction using polystyrene-embedded arched blocks (PEABs). All slabs had the same dimensions, steel reinforcement, and concrete compressive strength. One of these slabs was a solid slab, which was taken as a control slab, while the other six slabs were cast with PEABs. The main variables were the ratio of the length of the PEABs to the length of the slab (lp/L) and the ratio of the height of the PEABs to the total slab depth (hP/H). The minimum decrease in the ultimate load capacity was about 6% with a minimum reduction in the slab weight of 15%. In contrast, the maximum decrease in the ultimate load capacity was about 24% with a maximum reduction in the slab weight of 40%. Moreover, the mode of failure changed from flexure to shear failure, especially for those slabs with an lP/L ratio equal to one. The geometric and material non-linearity was adopted in the proposed finite element (FE) model to simulate the slabs with PEABs using Abaqus software. This article presents the results of the development of a methodology for describing the main morphological and cultural traits of the Pyricularia oryzae Cav. strains widespread in the south of Russia. At the same time, the types of traits are identified and listed, which make it possible to unambiguously determine the uniqueness and variety of the pathogen. The relationships and patterns established using cluster and statistical analysis make it possible to identify the conditions for the development of a pathogen that determine its predominant forms. Thus, research shows that leaf forms of P. oryzae strains isolated from rice plants with leaf form of blast disease have an equally directional growth pattern of a colony with a felt structure, and strains isolated from neck-affected plant form often produce a zone of a colony with a clumpy structure. The classification of cultural traits will make it possible to obtain scientifically grounded and comparable data that can be used in the analysis of the interaction of P. oryzae strains with rice plants on various varieties and in various agro-technological conditions in order to improve and rationalize agricultural activities. The article presents the development of a SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) strategy intended to confirm the improvement of the load-bearing capacity of a bridge over the Ružín Dam using static and dynamic load tests, as well as numerical simulations. The paper comprises measurements of the global response of the bridge to prepare a verified and validated FEM (Finite Element Method) model. A complex measuring system used for the tests consisted of two main parts: an interferometric IBIS-S (Image by Interferometric Survey-Structures) radar and a multichannel vibration and strain data logger. Next, structure–vehicle interactions were modelled, and non-linear numerical dynamic analyses were performed. As a result, the time histories of displacements of the structure from traffic effects were obtained. Their comparison with IBIS-S radar records proves that this method can be effectively used for assessing bridges subjected to common traffic loads. The results (measured accelerations) obtained by local tests in external pre-stressed cables are presented and a convenient method for acquiring the axial force in the cables is proposed. Sheath blight disease of rice caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn (teleomorph: Thanatephorus cucumeris) remains a global challenge due to the absence of reliable resistance genes and poor understanding of pathogen biology. Pectin, one of the most vital constituents of the plant cell wall, is targeted by pectin methylesterases, polygalacturonases, and few other enzymes of fungal pathogens. In this study, we catalogued the expressed genes of the fungal genome from RNAseq of R. solani infected four rice genotypes. Analysis of RNAseq revealed 3325 pathogen genes commonly expressed in all rice genotypes, in which 49, 490, and 83 genes were specific to BPT5204, Tetep, and Pankaj genotypes, respectively. To identify the early and late responding genes of R. solani during plant cell wall degradation, a real-time PCR analysis of 30 pectinolytic enzymes was done at six different time points after inoculation. The majority of these genes showed maximum induction at the 72 h time point, suggesting that it is the most crucial stage of infection. Pankaj showed lesser induction of these genes as compared to other genotypes. Leaf-blade tissue and 45 days old-growth stage are more favorable for the expression of pectin degradation genes of R. solani. Additionally, the expression analysis of these genes from four different strains of R. solani suggested differential regulation of genes but no distinct expression pattern between highly virulent and mild strains. The implications of the differential regulation of these genes in disease development have been discussed. This study provides the first such comprehensive analysis of R. solani genes encoding pectin degrading enzymes, which would help to decipher the pathogen biology and sheath blight disease development. Prions have served as pathfinders that reveal many aspects of proteostasis in neurons. The recent realization that several prominent neurodegenerative diseases spread via a prion-like mechanism illuminates new possibilities for diagnostics and therapeutics. Thus, key proteins in Alzheimer Disease and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), including amyloid-β precursor protein, Tau and superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), spread to adjacent cells in their misfolded aggregated forms and exhibit template-directed misfolding to induce further misfolding, disruptions to proteostasis and toxicity. Here we invert this comparison to ask what these prion-like diseases can teach us about the broad prion disease class, especially regarding the loss of these key proteins' function(s) as they misfold and aggregate. We also consider whether functional amyloids might reveal a role for subverted protein function in neurodegenerative disease. Our synthesis identifies SOD1 as an exemplar of protein functions being lost during prion-like protein misfolding, because SOD1 is inherently unstable and loses function in its misfolded disease-associated form. This has under-appreciated parallels amongst the canonical prion diseases, wherein the normally folded prion protein, PrPC, is reduced in abundance in fatal familial insomnia patients and during the preclinical phase in animal models, apparently via proteostatic mechanisms. Thus while template-directed misfolding and infectious properties represent gain-of-function that fascinates proteostasis researchers and defines (is required for) the prion(-like) diseases, loss and subversion of the functions attributed to hallmark proteins in neurodegenerative disease needs to be integrated into design towards effective therapeutics. Encouraging physical activity (PA) for adolescents is necessary to achieve and maintain optimal health, but it may increase the risk of PA-related injuries. This study sought to assess the frequency, location, type, and severity of PA-related injuries in Saudi students aged 13 to 18 years and to identify associated risk factors. A total of 402 students, including 206 boys aged 15.87 ± 1.69 years and 196 girls aged 15.83 ± 1.70 years, were randomly assigned to participate in this study. For each participant, height, weight, body mass index, and fat percentage were measured. Responses to a specially designed four-part self-administered questionnaire were also collected. Results revealed that better specific knowledge was associated with a lower likelihood of sustaining injuries (β = -0.136; p = 0.001) but increased sedentary behaviors were associated with a greater likelihood of sustaining a PA-related injury (β = 0.358; p = 0.023). Gender, knowledge, and sedentary behaviors were the factors overall associated with a greater likelihood of suffering 1, 2, and 3 or more PA-related injuries. However, gender, fat-free mass, knowledge, and sedentary behaviors were associated overall with a greater likelihood of bruises, strains, fractures, sprains, concussions, and at least two types of PA-related injuries. Collectively, we should pay attention to the PA-related injury problem among middle and high school students, particularly when promoting a physically active lifestyle.

Objective : The overall gender ratio in Chinese suicide rates has substantially changed during the past three decades. In this study, we investigated the social economic factors and the mechanisms that may be contributing to this fluctuation. Study Design : This is a secondary analysis using suicide mortality data from the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Methods : A statistical model was performed with province as the unit of analysis. The per capita GDP and income of each provincial-level region were collected from the Economic and Statistical Yearbook. Rate and ratio were used to describe the trend of variations, and correlation analyses were conducted to examine the association between economic development and gender ratio change. Results : The China overall male to female gender ratio of suicide rates increased as the GDP per capita grew (r = 0.439; p = 0.015). The gender ratio changed from 0.88 in 1990 to 1.56 in 2017, with the reversion point between 1995 and 2000. The most radical reverse changes in the gender ratios were found in large municipalities. Conclusions : Cultural and social economic variables may explain the gender ratio changes. Increased economic development has significantly reduced psychological strains on rural young women, which in turn decreased the suicide rate among this sub-population.

Strain distributions are crucial criteria of cross-beams six-axis force/torque sensors. The conventional method for calculating the criteria is to utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to get numerical solutions. This paper aims to obtain analytical solutions of strains under the effect of external force/torque in each dimension. Genetic mechanical models for cross-beams six-axis force/torque sensors are proposed, in which deformable cross elastic beams and compliant beams are modeled as quasi-static Timoshenko beam. A detailed description of model assumptions, model idealizations, application scope and model establishment is presented. The results are validated by both numerical FEA simulations and calibration experiments, and test results are found to be compatible with each other for a wide range of geometric properties. Haematococcus pluvialis (Flotow) is a unicellular green alga, which is considered to be the best astaxanthin-producing organism. Molecular markers are suitable tools for the purpose of finding out genetic variations in organisms; however there have been no studies conducted on ISSR or RAPD molecular markers for this organism. The DNA of 10 different strains of H. pluvialis (four strains from Iran, two strains from Finland, one strain from Switzerland and three strains from the USA) was extracted. A genetic similarity study was carried out using 14 ISSR and 12 RAPD primers. Moreover, the molecular weights of the bands produced ranged from 0.14 to 3.4 Kb. The PCA and dendrogram clustered the H. pluvialis strains into various groups according to their geographical origin. The lowest genetic similarity was between the Iran2 and USA2 strains (0.08) and the highest genetic similarity was between Finland1 and Finland2 (0.64). The maximum numbers of bands produced by the ISSR and RAPD primers were 35 and 6 bands, respectively. The results showed that ISSR and RAPD markers are useful for genetic diversity studies of Haematococcus as they showed geographical discrimination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) are caused by two distinct strains of disease-associated α-synuclein (αSynD). Recently, we have shown that olfactory mucosa (OM) samples of patients with PD and MSA can seed the aggregation of recombinant α-synuclein by means of Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion (αSyn_RT-QuIC). Remarkably, the biochemical and morphological properties of the final α-synuclein aggregates significantly differed between PD and MSA seeded samples. Here, these aggregates were given to neuron-like differentiated SH-SY5Y cells and distinct inflammatory responses were observed. To deepen whether the morphological features of α-synuclein aggregates were responsible for this variable SH-SY5Y inflammatory response, we generated three biochemically and morphologically distinct α-synuclein aggregates starting from recombinant α-synuclein that were used to seed αSyn_RT-QuIC reaction; the final reaction products were used to stimulate SH-SY5Y cells. Our study showed that, in contrast to OM samples of PD and MSA patients, the artificial aggregates did not transfer their distinctive features to the αSyn_RT-QuIC products and the latter induced analogous inflammatory responses in cells. Thus, the natural composition of the αSynD strains but also other specific factors in OM tissue can substantially modulate the biochemical, morphological and inflammatory features of the αSyn_RT-QuIC products. The aim of this article is to quantify the loads exerted by heavy-duty vehicles when crossing over buried pipeline. This problem arises in connection to the question pertaining to the use of protective sleeves (casings) applied to gas pipelines in regions with increased demands on pipeline operation safety. An experiment was conducted on a test pipe section made from L360NE pipeline steel equipped with strain gauges along the pipe perimeter, measuring strains in the axial and circumferential directions. Strain measurements were taken after back-filling the pipe trench, then during vehicle crossings over the empty pipe, and again after pressurizing the test pipe with air. Strain-based hoop stresses at the surface of the empty test pipe were found to exceed 30 MPa after back-filling the trench and increased to more than 40 MPa during the vehicle crossings. Similarly, axial stresses reached extremes of around 17 MPa in compression and 12 MPa in tension. Applying internal air pressure to the test pipe resulted in a reduced net effect on both the hoop and axial stresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The leaffooted plant bug, Leptoglossus zonatus, is widely distributed in the Western Hemisphere. In California, two lineages (strains) occur. One lineage is known from California, and the second is found in California and Brazil. Although this species has been in California since 1900, it has become a pest in almonds in the last decade. It is possible that a cryptic species or strain has been introduced. This study investigated the distribution of the two lineages (strains) of L. zonatus in the Western Hemisphere. Specimens from the Leptoglossus collection in the national insect collection in Mexico were used to extract DNA and sequence the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I gene. These sequences were combined with others in Genbank from California and South America to determine the strain distributions. The first strain occurred in California and Mexico, while the second was widespread from California into South America. When all samples were combined, there was overall low genetic diversity. The small number of genetic types (haplotypes), the range expansion, and the economic pest status of L. zonatus in California, suggest this insect is a potentially invasive insect pest. This study investigated the distribution of two lineages (strains) of L. zonatus in the Western Hemisphere. Specimens from the Leptoglossus collection in the national insect collection in Mexico were used to extract DNA and sequence the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I (mtDNA COI) gene, for use in population genetic and phylogenetic analyses. New sequences from Mexico, Central and South America were combined with those available in GenBank, from California and Brazil. Two lineages (strains) of L. zonatus were uncovered. One lineage occurs in California, Mexico and Ecuador. The second lineage is more widespread and found in California, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Brazil. The haplotype number and diversity, and nucleotide diversity, were found for samples from California, Mexico, and Brazil, for the two lineages, and for all 118 sequences combined. All sequences combined produced five haplotypes, and a haplotype diversity of 0.54. California and Brazil had 3 haplotypes each, with one haplotype shared (5 total). Haplotype diversity in California and in Brazil were 0.526 and 0.505, respectively. A haplotype network found that one haplotype was most abundant and widespread. The small number of haplotypes, a range expansion, and economic pest status of L. zonatus in California, all contribute to this insect being a potentially invasive insect pest. Diagnostics and assessment of the structural performance of collectors and tunnels require multi-criteria as well as comprehensive analyses for improving the safety based on acquired measurement data. This paper presents the basic goals for a structural health monitoring system designed based on distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS). The issue of selecting appropriate sensors enabling correct strain transfer is discussed hereafter, indicating both limitations of layered cables and advantages of sensors with monolithic cross-section design in terms of reliable measurements. The sensor's design determines the operation of the entire monitoring system and the usefulness of the acquired data for the engineering interpretation. The measurements and results obtained due to monolithic DFOS sensors are described hereafter on the example of real engineering structure—the Burakowski concrete collector in Warsaw during its strengthening with glass-fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) panels.
