Within this manuscript, we provide a novel Fano resonance-driven micro-nanosensor. Its primary structural components are a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide, a shield with three disks, and a T-shaped cavity (STDTC). The finite element approach was used to study the gadget in theory. It is found that the adjustment of the structure and the change of the dimensions are closely related to the sensitivity (S) and the quality factor (FOM). Different model structural parameters affect the Fano resonance, which in turn changes the transmission characteristics of the resonator. Through in-depth experimental analysis and selection of appropriate parameters, the sensor sensitivity finally reaches 3020 nm/RIU and the quality factor reaches 51.89. Furthermore, the installation of this microrefractive index sensor allows for the quick and sensitive measurement of glucose levels. It is a positive contribution to the field of optical devices and micro-nano sensors and meets the demand for efficient detection when applied in medical and environmental scenarios. In non-Hermitian open quantum systems, such as polariton condensates, the local tailoring of gains and losses opens up an interesting possibility to realize functional optical elements. Here, we demonstrate that deliberately introducing losses via a photonic defect, realized by reducing the quality factor of a DBR mirror locally within an ultrahigh-quality microcavity, may be utilized to create directed polariton currents towards the defect. We discuss the role of polariton–polariton interactions in the process and how to tailor the effective decay time of a polariton condensate by coupling it to the defect. The combination of micro- or nanofluidics and strong light–matter coupling has gained much interest in the past decade, which has led to the development of advanced systems and devices with numerous potential applications in different fields, such as chemistry, biosensing, and material science. Strong light–matter coupling is achieved by placing a dipole (e.g., an atom or a molecule) into a confined electromagnetic field, with molecular transitions being in resonance with the field and the coupling strength exceeding the average dissipation rate. Despite intense research and encouraging results in this field, some challenges still need to be overcome, related to the fabrication of nano- and microscale optical cavities, stability, scaling up and production, sensitivity, signal-to-noise ratio, and real-time control and monitoring. The goal of this paper is to summarize recent developments in micro- and nanofluidic systems employing strong light–matter coupling. An overview of various methods and techniques used to achieve strong light–matter coupling in micro- or nanofluidic systems is presented, preceded by a brief outline of the fundamentals of strong light–matter coupling and optofluidics operating in the strong coupling regime. The potential applications of these integrated systems in sensing, optofluidics, and quantum technologies are explored. The challenges and prospects in this rapidly developing field are discussed. A novel surface plasmon resonance (SPR) refractive index (RI) sensor based on the D-type dual-mode photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed. The sensor employs a side-polished few-mode PCF that facilitates the transmission of the fundamental and second-order modes, with an integrated microfluidic channel positioned directly above the fiber core. This design minimizes the distance to the analyte and maximizes the interaction between the optical field and the analyte, thereby enhancing the SPR effect and resonance loss for improved sensing performance. Au-TiO2 dual-layer material was coated on the surface of a microfluidic channel to enhance the penetration depth of the core evanescent field and tune the resonance wavelength to the near-infrared band, meeting the special needs of chemical and biomedical detection fields. The finite element method was utilized to systematically investigate the coupling characteristics between various modes and surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes, as well as the impact of structural parameters on the sensor performance. The results indicate that the LP11b_y mode exhibits greater wavelength sensitivity than the HE11_y mode, with a maximum sensitivity of 33,000 nm/RIU and an average sensitivity of 8272.7 nm/RIU in the RI sensing range of 1.25–1.36, which is higher than the maximum sensitivity of 16,000 nm/RIU and average sensitivity of 5666.7 nm/RIU for the HE11b_y mode. It is believed that the proposed PCF-SPR sensor features both high sensitivity and high resolution, which will become a critical device for wide RI detection in mid-infrared fields. In this study, we propose a mechanism for tuning the modal characteristics of a wedge plasmonic waveguide. The wedge plasmonic waveguide is composed of a thin metallic layer deposited on a wedge-shaped dielectric waveguide. The tuning mechanism is based on controlling the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode at the interface between the metal layer and the dielectric waveguide instead of controlling the SPP mode at the interface between the wedge-shaped metal layer and the surrounding media. This mechanism is performed by modulating the effective refractive index of the dielectric waveguide using a closely coupled tuning waveguide. The numerically investigated results show that the propagation length of the device can be tuned more than 100%; this characteristic has not been explored yet in previous studies. The effective mode area with deep-subwavelength size is almost kept constant while tuning the propagation length. This study offers new insights into tailoring the modal characteristics of plasmonic waveguides based on controlling the mode property at the interface between the metal layer and the dielectric waveguide. Digital multipliers are the core components of digital computers, and improving the speed of transistor electronic computers during computation has almost reached its limit, with high power consumption. In this paper, we proposed an electro-optic hybrid multidigit digital multiplier based on SPP technology, which has the advantages of high speed and low power consumption in optical logic, as well as flexible electrical operation and easy storage. The electro-optic hybrid digital multiplier mainly consists of an electrical AND logic gate, an electro-optic hybrid half adder, and an electro-optic hybrid full adder. The optical logic unit is controlled by activated ITO materials to achieve optical-domain operations, and then the multiplication calculation results are converted into electrical signals through photoelectric conversion. The experimental results show that when the scale is 64 × 64 bits, compared with transistor digital multiplication, the energy consumption is reduced by 48.8%; the speed is increased by a factor of 28; and the volume of the electro-optic hybrid digital multiplier device is larger than that of the transistor multiplier, saving 59.9% of the area. For optical transmission loss, a single adder outputs 0.31 dB at different device scales, while the carry output continuously increases with device scale. At scales of 8 × 8 bits, 16 × 16 bits, and 64 × 64 bits, the insertion losses at the sum output ports are 1.03 dB/μm and 1.87 dB/μm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined applications of polarized evanescent guided wave surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to determine the binding and orientation of small molecules and ligand-modified nanoparticles, and the relevance of this technique to lab-on-a-chip, surface plasmon polariton and other types of field enhancement techniques relevant to Raman biosensing. A simplified tutorial on guided-wave Raman spectroscopy is provided that introduces the notion of plasmonic nanoparticle field enhancements to magnify the otherwise weak TE- and TM-polarized evanescent fields for Raman scattering on a simple plasmonic nanoparticle slab waveguide substrate. The waveguide construct is called an optical chemical bench (OCB) to emphasize its adaptability to different kinds of surface chemistries that can be envisaged to prepare optical biosensors. The OCB forms a complete spectroscopy platform when integrated into a custom-built Raman spectrograph. Plasmonic enhancement of the evanescent field is achieved by attaching porous carpets of Au@Ag core shell nanoparticles to the surface of a multi-mode glass waveguide substrate. We calibrated the OCB by establishing the dependence of SER spectra of adsorbed 4-mercaptopyridine and 4-aminobenzoic acid on the TE/TM polarization state of the evanescent field. We contrasted the OCB construct with more elaborate photonic chip devices that also benefit from enhanced evanescent fields, but without the use of plasmonics. We assemble hierarchies of matter to show that the OCB can resolve the binding of Fe2+ ions from water at the nanoscale interface of the OCB by following the changes in the SER spectra of 4MPy as it coordinates the cation. A brief introduction to magnetoplasmonics sets the stage for a study that resolves the 4ABA ligand interface between guest magnetite nanoparticles adsorbed onto host plasmonic Au@Ag nanoparticles bound to the OCB. In some cases, the evanescent wave TM polarization was strongly attenuated, most likely due to damping by inertial charge carriers that favor optical loss for this polarization state in the presence of dense assemblies of plasmonic nanoparticles. The OCB offers an approach that provides vibrational and orientational information for (bio)sensing at interfaces that may supplement the information content of evanescent wave methods that rely on perturbations in the refractive index in the region of the evanescent wave. Polar van der Waals (vdW) crystals, composed of atomic layers held together by vdW forces, can host phonon polaritons—quasiparticles arising from the interaction between photons in free-space light and lattice vibrations in polar materials. These crystals offer advantages such as easy fabrication, low Ohmic loss, and optical confinement. Recently, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), known for having hyperbolicity in the mid-infrared range, has been used to explore multiple modes with high optical confinement. This opens possibilities for practical polaritonic nanodevices with subdiffractional resolution. However, polariton waves still face exposure to the surrounding environment, leading to significant energy losses. In this work, we propose a simple approach to inducing a hyperbolic phonon polariton (HPhP) waveguide in hBN by incorporating a low dielectric medium, ZrS2. The low dielectric medium serves a dual purpose—it acts as a pathway for polariton propagation, while inducing high optical confinement. We establish the criteria for the HPhP waveguide in vdW heterostructures with various thicknesses of ZrS2 through scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and by conducting numerical electromagnetic simulations. The topological properties of optical skyrmions in confined electromagnetic fields are perfectly presented through spin vectors and electric-field vectors. However, currently, electric-field optical skyrmions in surface plasmon polaritons are mostly presented in the form of a Néel type. Most control strategies involve linear directional movement, and topological manipulation methods are monotonous. We specifically propose a multi-arc symmetric slit array, which generates skyrmions from the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) field under excitation of a linearly polarized Gaussian light-source array and exhibits strong dependence processes on the rotation, deformation, and phase distribution of the incident light source. We also discuss the independence and synthesis of deformation and rotation related to phase difference and positions of regulation, respectively, which provide the possibility for rich deformations under different rotation states. Exciton–polaritons, which are bosonic quasiparticles with an extremely low mass, play a key role in understanding macroscopic quantum effects related to Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) in solid-state systems. The study of trapped polaritons in a potential well provides an ideal platform for manipulating polariton condensates, enabling polariton lasing with specific formation in k-space. Here, we realize quantized microcavity polariton lasing in simple harmonic oscillator (SHO) states based on spatial localized excitons in InGaN/GaN quantum wells (QWs). Benefiting from the high exciton binding energy (90 meV) and large oscillator strength of the localized exciton, room-temperature (RT) polaritons with large Rabi splitting (61 meV) are obtained in a strongly coupled microcavity. The manipulation of polariton condensates is performed through a parabolic potential well created by optical pump control. Under the confinement situation, trapped polaritons are controlled to be distributed in the selected quantized energy sublevels of the SHO state. The maximum energy spacing of 11.3 meV is observed in the SHO sublevels, indicating the robust polariton trapping of the parabolic potential well. Coherent quantized polariton lasing is achieved in the ground state of the SHO state and the coherence property of the lasing is analyzed through the measurements of spatial interference patterns and g(2)(τ). Our results offer a feasible route to explore the manipulation of macroscopic quantum coherent states and to fabricate novel polariton devices towards room-temperature operations. Buttcoupling is the most efficient way to excite surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves at dielectric/metal interfaces in order to realize applications in broadband and ultra-compact integrated circuits (IOCs). We propose a reasonable waveguide structure to efficiently excite and collect the SPP waves supported in a plasmonic trench waveguide in the long-haul telecommunication wavelength range. Our simulation results show that the coupling efficiency between the dielectric strip waveguides and a plasmonic trench waveguide can be optimized, which is dominated by the zigzag propagation path length in the dielectric strip loaded on the metal substrate. It is noted that nearly a 100% coupling efficiency can be achieved when the distance between the excitation source and the plasmonic waveguide is about 6.76 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphene can support surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the terahertz band, and graphene SPP sensors are widely used in the field of terahertz micro- and nano-optical devices. In this paper, we propose an H-shaped graphene metasurface and investigate the plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) phenomenon in the proposed structure using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Our results show that the Fermi energy levels, as well as certain shape parameters, can effectively modulate the PIT phenomenon in the proposed structure. Interestingly, changing some of these shape parameters can excite two dips into three. In terms of sensing performance, the maximum values of sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) are 1.4028 THz/RIU and 17.97, respectively. In this study, a Kretschmann structure with a hybrid layer of graphene–WS2 is designed to develop a sensitive biosensor for deoxyribonucleic acid detection. The biosensor incorporates a 45 nm gold layer as the active layer and a thin film of chrome as the adhesive layer. Through the optimization of the graphene and WS2 layers, combined with the implementation of a silicon layer, we can enhance the nano-sensor's sensitivity. The thin silicon layer acts as a protective barrier for the metal, while also increasing the volume of interaction. Consequently, by adjusting the thickness of the active metal and adding a silicon layer, we achieve higher sensitivity and a lower full width at half maximum, leading to sensitivity of 333.33°/RIU. The designed structure is analyzed using numerical techniques and the finite difference time domain method, allowing us to obtain the optical characteristics of the surface plasmon polariton sensor. To keep pace with the demands of modern photonic integration technology, the electro-optic modulator should feature multi-parameter tunable components and a compact size. Here, we propose a hybrid structure that can modulate the multi-parameters of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) simultaneously with a compact size by controlling the electron concentration of indium tin oxide (ITO) in the near-infrared spectrum. The length, width and height of the device are only 15 μm, 5 μm and 9 μm, respectively. The numerical results show that when the electron concentration in ITO changes from 7.5 × 1026 m−3 to 9.5 × 1026 m−3, the variation in amplitude, wavelength and phase are 49%, 300 nm and 347°, respectively. The topological properties of optical skyrmions have enormous application value in fields such as optical communication and polarization sensing. At present, research on optical skyrmions focuses primarily on the topological principles of skyrmions and their applications. Nonetheless, extant research devoted to skyrmion-array manipulation remains meager. The sole manipulation scheme has a limited effect on the movement direction of the whole skyrmion array. Based on the interference principle of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wave, we propose an upgraded scheme for the tailoring of electric-field optical skyrmions. A distributed Gaussian-focused spots array is deployed. Unlike the existing manipulation, we customize the phase of the light source to be more flexible, and we have discovered optical-skyrmion tailoring channels and shaping channels. Specifically, we move the skyrmions within the channel in both directions and manipulate the shape of the topological domain walls to achieve customized transformation. This work will evolve towards a more flexible regulatory plan for tailoring optical-skyrmion arrays, and this is of great significance for research in fields such as optical storage and super-resolution microimaging. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have become a research hotspot due to their high intensity and subwavelength localization. Through free-electron excitation, a portion of the momentum of moving electrons can be converted into SPPs. Converting highly localized SPPs into a radiated field is an approach with the potential to aid in the development of a light radiation source. Reducing losses of SPPs is currently a critical challenge that needs to be addressed. The lifetime of SPPs in metal films is longer than that in metal blocks. Traditional optical gratings can transform SPPs into radiation to avoid the decay of SPPs in metal; however, they are created by etching metal films, so they tend to alter the dispersion characteristics of these films and will emit radiation in the direction perpendicular to the metal surface. This paper proposes an approach to converting the SPPs of a metal film excited by free electrons into a radiation field via lateral grating and obtaining in-plane radiation. We investigate the properties of SPP lateral radiation. The study of lateral radiation from metal films holds significant importance for SPP radiation sources and SPP on-chip circuit development. In this paper, a novel kind of mode composite transmission line (MC-TL) is proposed, and a dual-band power divider with a large frequency ratio using this novel MC-TL for 5G communication systems was developed. The proposed MC-TL was developed using spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) and a corrugated substrate-integrated waveguide (CSIW) transmission line, which supports both a surface plasmon mode and TE10 mode, independently. The surface plasmon mode operates in the grooves of the surface metal layer, while the TE10 mode works in the substrate between two metal layers. These two parts can transmit different modes at independent frequencies. This structure can be used in dual-band transmission lines with a high frequency ratio. The characteristics and design of the MC-TL (SSPPs and CSIW) are analyzed and illustrated. The MC-TL was fabricated and measured to demonstrate its performance. Moreover, based on the proposed MC-TL, a dual-band power divider with a large frequency ratio (operating at 3 GHz and 28 GHz simultaneously) was also designed and fabricated. It can cover the frequency of a fifth-generation communication system perfectly. First, a recently developed eigenfunction expansion technique, based in part on the separation of the thickness variable and partly utilizing a modified Frobenius-type series expansion technique in conjunction with the Eshelby–Stroh formalism, is employed to derive three-dimensional singular stress fields in the vicinity of the front of an interfacial crack weakening an infinite bicrystalline superlattice plate, made of orthorhombic (cubic, hexagonal, and tetragonal serving as special cases) phases of finite thickness and subjected to the far-field extension/bending, in-plane shear/twisting, and anti-plane shear loadings, distributed through the thickness. Crack-face boundary and interface contact conditions as well as those that are prescribed on the top and bottom surfaces of the bicrystalline superlattice plate are exactly satisfied. It also extends a recently developed concept of the lattice crack deflection (LCD) barrier to a superlattice, christened superlattice crack deflection (SCD) energy barrier for studying interfacial crack path instability, which can explain crack deflection from a difficult interface to an easier neighboring cleavage system. Additionally, the relationships of the nature (easy/easy, easy/difficult, or difficult/difficult) interfacial cleavage systems based on the present solutions with the structural chemistry aspects of the component phases (such as orthorhombic, tetragonal, hexagonal, as well as FCC (face-centered cubic) transition metals and perovskites) of the superlattice are also investigated. Finally, results pertaining to the through-thickness variations in mode I/II/III stress intensity factors and energy release rates for symmetric hyperbolic sine-distributed loads and their skew-symmetric counterparts that also satisfy the boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the bicrystalline superlattice plate under investigation also form an important part of the present investigation. Diffraction gratings have always been used to effectively couple optical radiation within integrated waveguides. This is also valid for plasmonic structures that support Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) waves. Traditional gratings usually excite SPP waves at the interface where they are located or, for thin metal nanostrips, at both interfaces. But reducing the thickness of the metal layer in the presence of a grating has the handicap of increasing the tunnelling of light towards the substrate, which means higher losses and reduced coupling efficiency. In this paper, we design and optimize novel gratings buried within the metallic thin films for selective coupling of SPP waves onto individual interfaces. Compared with traditional superficial gratings, the novel buried ones demonstrate higher efficiency and much lower residual tunnelling of light through the coupling structures. A kind of surface plasmon waveguide composed of two nested cylindrical dielectric parallel nanowire pairs coated with graphene was designed and studied. The dependence of the mode characteristics and the normalized gradient force of the lowest two modes supported by the waveguide on the parameters involved were analyzed by using the multipole method. To ensure rigor, the finite element method was employed to verify the accuracy of the multipole method, thus confirming its results. The results show that the multipole method is a powerful tool for handling this type of waveguide. The real part of the effective refractive index, the propagation length, the figure of merit, and the normalized gradient force can be significantly affected by the operating wavelength, the Fermi energy of graphene, the waveguide geometric parameters, and the refractive index of the inner dielectric nanowire. Due to the employment of nested dielectric nanowire pairs coated with graphene, this waveguide structure exhibits significant gradient force that surpasses 100 nN·μm−1·mW−1. The observed phenomena can be attributed to the interaction of the field with graphene. Public awareness of preventing pathogenic microorganisms has significantly increased. Among numerous microbial prevention methods, the deep-ultraviolet (DUV) disinfection technology has received wide attention by using the nitride-based light-emitting diode (LED). However, the light extraction efficiency of DUV LEDs and the utilization rate of emitted DUV light are relatively low at the current stage. In this study, a light distribution design (referred to as the reflective system) was explored to enhance the utilization of emitted DUV from LEDs, leading to successful and efficient surface and air disinfection. Optical power measurements and microbial inactivation tests demonstrated an approximately 79% improvement in average radiation power density achieved by the reflective system when measured at a 5 cm distance from the irradiation surface. Moreover, a statistically significant enhancement in local surface disinfection was observed with low electric power consumption. The reflective system was integrated into an air purifier and underwent air disinfection testing, effectively disinfecting a 3 m3 space within ten minutes. Additionally, a fluorine resin film at the nanolevel was developed to protect the light module from oxidation, validated through a 1200 h accelerated aging test under humid conditions. We demonstrate that a gradual interface between gold and silver supports the propagation of a novel kind of surface electromagnetic wave, which is different from the more well-known surface plasmon polaritons. The existence of such surface waves leads to a paradoxical situation in which a continuous metal barrier which does not have any pinholes may exhibit considerably increased light transmission if the barrier is made of two different metals. We present an integrated device combining a double L-shaped chiral metasurface with long-wavelength GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well infrared photodetectors (QWIPs), achieving a circular polarized extinction ratio (CPER) as high as 45 in the long-wavelength infrared range of 7–9 μm. The unit of the chiral metasurface array consists of two structurally identical L-shaped gold structures with central symmetry. The CPER of the double L-shaped QWIPs is 14 times higher than that of a single L-shaped QWIP. The device operates in three modes within the detection band: the microcavity mode, the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode, and the hybrid mode. The double L-shaped chiral structure selects and reflects a small portion of left-handed circularly polarized light (LCP), while the majority enters the device and excites SPP modes with the bottom gold grating layer, leading to an absorption enhancement. In contrast, right-handed circularly polarized light (RCP) is mostly reflected with limited excitation of SPP waves. QWIPs exhibit a peak absorption of 0.8 and a coupling efficiency of 2700% in the active region of the quantum well due to the combined effects of the microcavity and SPP modes, in which the SPP mode plays a dominant role. Optical hydrogen sensors offer high sensitivity, high accuracy, and non-invasive sensing capabilities, making them promising devices in various fields, including the construction of hydrogen fuel cells, storage and transportation, and aerospace. However, to achieve better sensitivity and faster reaction times, such sensors are often constructed as nano-arrays or nano-gratings, leading to increased manufacturing costs and complexity. In this study, we propose and demonstrate a highly sensitive hydrogen sensor based on a multilayer structure. The proposed structure consists of a Pd metal film and a photonic crystal with a defect layer, in which the photonic crystal is designed by an alternating arrangement of Ta2O5 and SiO2, and the material comprising the defect layer is SiO2. With a sensitivity of up to 16,020 at 670 nm, the proposed sensor relies on the coupling of Tamm plasmon polaritons and defect modes. The electric field distribution inside the structure is also provided in order to reveal its physical mechanism. Furthermore, we investigate the effects of the thickness of the defect layer and the angle of incident light on the sensor's performance. In this paper, we theoretically investigated the low-threshold and controllable optical bistability (OB) of a graphene-based Otto configuration with a nonlinear three-dimensional Dirac semimetal (3D DSM) as the substrate. The combined effect of the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in graphene and the very high third-order nonlinear conductivity of the 3D DSM enabled this scheme to achieve a relatively low optical bistability threshold. At the same time, this simple multilayer structure showed the tunability of OB due to the fact that the reflectance could be modulated by regulating the Fermi energy of the 3D DSM. Furthermore, we also found that the OB hysteresis curve was closely related to the relaxation time of the 3D DSM and the thickness of the air layer. The metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide has been highly anticipated for confining and guiding surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on the subwavelength scale. However, perennial drawbacks such as a short propagation length and an unbounded transverse field have set limits on the use of the MIM waveguide in various applications. Herein, diffraction- and dispersion-free MIM modes are synthesized by using space–time wave packets (STWPs) and are therefore referred to as space–time MIM (ST-MIM) waveguide modes. Compared to a Gaussian pulse of the same duration and spectral bandwidth, the ST-MIM demonstrates enhanced propagation lengths of about 2.4 times for the symmetric mode and about 6.3 times for the antisymmetric mode. In the simulations, the ST-MIMs are confined in all transverse dimensions, thereby overriding the diffraction limits. In addition, the group velocities of the ST-MIMs can be arbitrarily designed, which makes it possible to synchronize the pulse propagation speeds of the symmetric and antisymmetric MIM modes. In this paper, a novel broadband balanced-to-balanced (BTB) filtering power divider (FPD) utilizing the half-mode substrate-integrated waveguide and spoof surface plasmon polariton (HMSIW-SSPP) hybrid transmission line is introduced. Initially, a new HMSIW-SSPP unit cell is proposed, demonstrating a lower upper cut-off frequency compared to the classical HMSIW-SSPP unit cell. Building upon this unit cell, a bandpass BTB FPD is devised employing dual-layer stacked substrates, enabling independent control over the passband's lower and upper cut-off frequencies through specific physical dimensions. Additionally, the incorporation of isolation resistors and defected ground structures in the BTB FPD enhances differential-mode isolation and common-mode (CM) suppression between output ports. A manufactured and tested BTB FPD prototype validates this design method, showcasing a broad fractional bandwidth of 52.31% (6.72–11.48 GHz), output port isolation surpassing 14.25 dB, and transmitted CM suppression exceeding 34.05 dB. Gold nanohole arrays, hybrid metal/dielectric metasurfaces composed of periodically arranged air holes in a thick gold film, exhibit versatile support for both localized and propagating surface plasmons. Leveraging their capabilities, particularly in surface plasmon resonance-oriented applications, demands precise optical tuning. In this study, a customized particle swarm optimization algorithm, implemented in Ansys Lumerical FDTD, was employed to optically tune gold nanohole arrays treated as bidimensional gratings following the Bragg condition. Both square and triangular array dispositions were considered. A giant electric field on a subwavelength scale is highly beneficial for boosting the light–matter interaction. In this paper, we investigated a hybrid structure consisting of a hemispheric dimer array and a gold film and realized resonant mode coupling of the surface lattice resonance (SLR) and surface plasmon polariton (SPP). Mode coupling is demonstrated by observing anti-crossing in reflection spectra, which corresponds to Rabi splitting. Although the resonance coupling does not enter the strong coupling regime, an improved quality factor (Q~350) and stronger electric field enhancement in the gap region of the dimer (i.e., hot spot) in our hybrid structure are obtained compared to those of the single dimer or dimer array only. Remarkably, the magnitude of electric field enhancement over 500 can be accessible. Such high field enhancement makes our hybridized structure a versatile platform for the realization of ultra-sensitive biosensing, low-threshold nanolasing, low-power nonlinear optical devices, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advancements in terahertz (THz) wave technology have highlighted the criticality of circular-polarization detection, fostering the development of more compact, efficient on-chip THz circular-polarization detectors. In response to this technological imperative, we presented a chiral-antenna-integrated GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) THz detector. The chiral antenna selectively couples the incident light of a specific circular-polarization state into a surface-plasmon polariton wave that enhances the absorptance of the QWs by a factor of 12 relative to a standard 45° faceted device, and reflects a significant amount of the incident light of the orthogonal circular-polarization state. The circular-polarization selectivity is further enhanced by the QWs with a strong intrinsic anisotropy, resulting in a circular-polarization extinction ratio (CPER) as high as 26 at 6.52 THz. In addition, the operation band of the device can be adjusted by tuning the structural parameters of the chiral structure. Moreover, the device preserves a high performance for oblique incidence within a range of ±5°, and the device architecture is compatible with a focal plane array. We have studied dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the Kretschmann geometry (prism/Ag/dye-doped polymer) in weak, intermediate, and ultra-strong exciton–plasmon coupling regimes. The dispersion curves obtained in the reflection experiment were in good agreement with the simple model predictions at small concentrations of dye (Rhodamine 590, Rh590) in the polymer (Poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA). At the same time, highly unusual multi-segment "staircase-like" dispersion curves were observed at extra-large dye concentrations, also in agreement with the simple theoretical model predicting large, small, and negative group velocities featured by different polariton branches. In a separate experiment, we measured angular dependent emission of Rh590 dye and obtained the dispersion curves consisting of two branches, one nearly resembling the SPP dispersion found in reflection and the second one almost horizontal. In this study, we demonstrate the potential capability to control Tamm plasmon-polaritons (TPP) by applying atomic layer deposition (ALD) as a highly precise technique for plasmonic applications. Applications in plasmonics usually require tens of nanometers or less thick layers; thus, ALD is a very suitable technique with monolayer-by-monolayer growth of angstrom resolution. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and polarized reflection intensity identified the TPP resonances in the photonic band gap (PBG) formed by periodically alternating silicon oxide and tantalum oxide layers. The sub-nanometer control of the Al2O3 layer by ALD allows precise tailoring of TPP resonances within a few nanometers of spectral shift. The employing of the ALD method for the fabrication of thin layers with sub-nanometer thickness accuracy in more complex structures proves to be a versatile platform for practical applications where tunable plasmonic resonances of high quality are required. The advent of elastic metamaterials at the beginning of the 21st century opened new venues and possibilities for the existence of new types of elastic (ultrasonic) surface waves, which were deemed previously impossible. In fact, it is not difficult to prove that shear horizontal (SH) elastic surface waves cannot exist on the elastic half-space or at the interface between two conventional elastic half-spaces. However, in this paper we will show that SH elastic surface waves can propagate at the interface between two elastic half-spaces, providing that one of them is a metamaterial with a negative elastic compliance s 44 (ω) . If in addition, s 44 (ω) changes with frequency ω as the dielectric function ε (ω) in Drude's model of metals, then the proposed SH elastic surface waves can be considered as an elastic analogue of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) electromagnetic waves, propagating at a metal-dielectric interface. Due to inherent similarities between the proposed SH elastic surface waves and SPP electromagnetic waves, the new results developed in this paper can be readily transferred into the SPP domain and vice versa. The proposed new SH elastic surface waves are characterized by a strong subwavelength confinement of energy in the vicinity of the guiding interface; therefore, they can potentially be used in subwavelength ultrasonic imaging, superlensing, and/or acoustic (ultrasonic) sensors with extremely high mass sensitivity. Cascaded stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) under powerful picosecond pumping of 532 nm wavelength was investigated in a single pass of a KTP (KTiOPO4) crystal. Under ordinary polarization of the pump wave (relatively XOZ-plane) parametric scattering in the KTP crystal was observed. By rotation of the pump wave polarization (from ordinary to extraordinary), this scattering gradually transforms into polariton scattering. Polariton signal components (spots) with gaps between them were registered at external angles of ~2° between the neighboring spots. Five polariton signal components were detected above the pump beam, with a frequency difference between neighboring cascaded components of ~188 cm−1 (5.64 THz). The wavelength of each next component increased regularly with the angle between this component and the pump wave, so this regular sequence of polariton signal components can be regarded as a cascaded SPS. In this paper, we present a scheme for generating terahertz (THz) radiation using an array of parallel double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) subjected to a direct current (DC). The longitudinal surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the DWCNTs are coherently excited by two near-infrared laser beams with slightly different frequencies. Through numerical methods, we investigate the spectral characteristics of the SPPs in the presence of a DC current in the nanotubes. We identify high-quality plasmonic modes with a slowdown factor exceeding 300 in the terahertz frequency region. The amplification of these slow SPP modes is facilitated by the DC current in the DWCNTs, fulfilling a synchronism condition. This condition ensures that the phase velocity of the SPPs is closely matched to the drift velocity of the charge carriers, allowing for an efficient energy exchange between the current and the surface electromagnetic wave. The high-frequency currents on the nanotube walls in the DWCNT array enable the emission of THz radiation into the far field, owing to an antenna effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a long-range hybrid waveguide for subwavelength confinement based on double SPP coupling is proposed. The hybrid waveguide consists of a metal-based cylindrical hybrid waveguide and a silver nanowire. There are two coupling regions in the waveguide structure that enhance mode coupling. Strong mode coupling enables the waveguide to exhibit both a small effective mode area (0.01) and an extremely long transmission length (700 μm). The figure of merit (FOM) of the waveguide can be as high as 4000. In addition, the cross-sectional area of the waveguide is only 500 nm × 500 nm, allowing optical operation in the subwavelength range, which helps enhance the miniaturization of optoelectronic devices. The existence of surface plasmon polaritons in doped silicon micro-scale structures has opened up new and innovative possibilities for applications, such as sensing, imaging, and photonics. A CMOS-compatible doped Si plasmonic sensor is proposed and investigated. The plasmon resonance can be tuned by controlling the carrier density and dopant concentration. In this paper, we demonstrate that using silicon doped with phosphorus at a concentration of 5 × 10 20 cm − 3 can induce surface plasmon resonance in the mid-infrared region. Two ring resonators of two different radii based on metal–insulator–metal waveguide structures are studied individually. Then, the two ring resonators are integrated in the same device. When the two ring resonators are coupled and resonate at the same frequency; two distinct resonance spectral lines are generated with striking features that improve its potential use for sensing and modulation applications. The propagating plasmonic mode is studied, including its mode profile and bend loss. We evaluate the effectiveness of a microstructure gas sensor with dimensions of 15 μ m × 15 μ m by measuring its sensitivity and selectivity towards methane and ethane gases. Small alterations in the surrounding refractive index led to noticeable shifts in the resonance peak. The sensor achieved a sensitivity of 7539.9 nm/RIU at the mid-infrared spectral range around the 7.7 μ m wavelength. Furthermore, by combining the resonators, we can achieve a smaller full width at half maximum (FWHM), which will ultimately result in greater sensitivity than using a single-ring resonator or other plasmonic resonator configurations. Once the sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor are measured, the FOM can be calculated by dividing the sensitivity by the selectivity of the sensor, resulting in an FOM of 6732. The oxides of group 14 have been widely used in numerous applications in glass, ceramics, optics, pharmaceuticals, and food industries and semiconductors, photovoltaics, thermoelectrics, sensors, and energy storage, namely, batteries. Herein, we simulate and experimentally determine by scanning kelvin probe (SKP) the work functions of three oxides, SiO2, SiO, and SnO2, which were found to be very similar. Electrical properties such as electronic band structure, electron localization function, and carrier mobility were also simulated for the three crystalline oxides, amorphous SiO, and surfaces. The most exciting results were obtained for SiO and seem to show Poole–Frankel emissions or trap-assisted tunneling and propagation of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) with nucleation of solitons on the surface of the Aluminum. These phenomena and proposed models may also describe other oxide-metal heterojunctions and plasmonic and metamaterials devices. The SiO2 was demonstrated to be a stable insulator interacting less with the metals composing the cell than SnO2 and much less than SiO, configuring a typical Cu/SiO2/Al cell potential well. Its surface charge carrier mobility is small, as expected for an insulator. The highest charge carrier mobility at the lowest conduction band energy is the SnO2's and the most symmetrical the SiO's with a similar number of electron holes at the conduction and valence bands, respectively. Plasmonic nanostructure biosensors based on metal are a powerful tool in the biosensing field. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can be classified into localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and propagating surface plasmon polariton (PSPP), based on the transmission mode. Initially, the physical principles of LSPR and PSPP are elaborated. In what follows, the recent development of the biosensors related to SPR principle is summarized. For clarity, they are categorized into three groups according to the sensing principle: (i) inherent resonance-based biosensors, which are sensitive to the refractive index changes of the surroundings; (ii) plasmon nanoruler biosensors in which the distances of the nanostructure can be changed by biomolecules at the nanoscale; and (iii) surface-enhanced Raman scattering biosensors in which the nanostructure serves as an amplifier for Raman scattering signals. Moreover, the advanced application of single-molecule detection is discussed in terms of metal nanoparticle and nanopore structures. The dynamic steering of a beam reflected from a photonic structure supporting Tamm plasmon polariton is demonstrated. The phase and amplitude of the reflected wave are adjusted by modulating the refractive index of a transparent conductive oxide layer by applying a bias voltage. In this paper, the magnetically tunable Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift of a reflected beam at terahertz frequencies is achieved by using a multilayer structure where three layers of anisotropic graphene are inserted. The enhanced GH shift phenomenon results from the local field enhancement owing to the excitation of graphene surface plasmon polaritons at the interface between two dielectric materials. By considering the quantum response of graphene, the GH shift can be switched from negative to positive by harnessing the anisotropic conductivity of graphene, and the GH shift can be actively tuned through the external magnetic field or by controlling the structural parameters. By setting appropriate magnetic field and structural parameters, we can obtain GH values of −140 microns to 220 microns in the terahertz band. In recent years, owing to the continuous development of polymer nanofiber manufacturing technology, various nanofibers with different structural characteristics have emerged, allowing their application in the field of sensing to continually expand. Integrating polymer nanofibers with optical sensors takes advantage of the high sensitivity, fast response, and strong immunity to electromagnetic interference of optical sensors, enabling widespread use in biomedical science, environmental monitoring, food safety, and other fields. This paper summarizes the research progress of polymer nanofibers in optical sensors, classifies and analyzes polymer nanofiber optical sensors according to different functions (fluorescence, Raman, polarization, surface plasmon resonance, and photoelectrochemistry), and introduces the principles, structures, and properties of each type of sensor and application examples in different fields. This paper also looks forward to the future development directions and challenges of polymer nanofiber optical sensors, and provides a reference for in-depth research of sensors and industrial applications of polymer nanofibers. We investigate the influence of the surface quantum effect on the optical characteristics of a plasmonic dimer consisting of two identical gold nanoparticles with a tiny gap. To account for the corresponding surface quantum effect, an electromagnetic theory based on mesoscopic boundary conditions and surface response functions is used. It is shown that the quantum surface effect leads to a blue shift and damping of the corresponding plasmon resonance. This effect becomes more substantial when the constituent particles are elongated, and the gap size shrinks to subnanometer values. In this case, the difference in the results obtained using the surface response functions and the local response approximation can be up to four times and is accompanied by a spectral blue shift of 10 nm. Interconnects have become a major obstacle in chip scaling. Spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) modes have gained attention for their ability to manipulate light beyond diffraction limits at a given frequency, leading to SSPP interconnects. This article investigates the transmission characteristics of SSPP interconnect pairs placed side by side in the terahertz frequency range with comprehensive performance analysis. The proposed SSPP waveguide pair exhibits a maximum transmission coefficient of around −0.05 dB in the −3 dB band in the terahertz frequency range. Due to field confinement near the metal–dielectric interface, energy remains confined for the designed SSPP interconnect pair system. The proposed SSPP structure shows several bands in the terahertz frequency range, whereas conventional interconnects shows almost zero transmission at such frequencies. Additionally, the effect of geometric parameters on transmission coefficients (S 21 ) and coupling coefficients (S 41 ) has been investigated. Moreover, it has been shown that the bandwidth, as well as the upper cutoff frequency, can be tuned by varying the geometric parameters such as groove height, groove width and groove density. Since global interconnects undergo bending in actual circuits during distant data transmission on chips, geometric mismatches may occur between adjacent pairs of SSPP interconnects. Hence, it has also been examined how bending and mismatches affect transmission and coupling coefficients. Several SSPP schemes have been simulated, among which the best performance is obtained with 2 μ m mismatch in groove height. For this optimized design, two corrugated metal interconnects are considered with groove heights of 20 μ m and 22 μ m, respectively, a groove width of 3 μ m, a period of 20 μ m, and the number of grooves at 50. For this particular configuration, an ultra-wide passband is found having a bandwidth of almost 400 GHz, with a signal reflection of below −12 dB and little insertion loss of ∼−1.43 dB. An ultra-compact low-pass spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) filter based on an interdigital structure (IS) is designed. Simulated dispersion curves show that adding the interdigital structure in an SSPP unit effectively reduces its asymptotic frequency compared with traditional and T-shaped SSPP geometries, and the unit dimensions can be conversely reduced. Based on that, three IS-based SSPP units are, respectively, designed with different maximum intrinsic frequencies and similar asymptotic frequencies to constitute the matching and waveguide sections of the proposed filter, and the unit number in the waveguide section is adjusted to improve the out-of-band suppression. Simulation results illustrate the efficient transmission in the 0~5.66 GHz passband, excellent out-of-band suppression (over 24 dB) in the 5.95~12 GHz stopband and ultra-shape roll-off at 5.74 GHz of the proposed filter. Measurement results on a fabricated prototype validate the design, with a measured cut-off frequency of 5.53 GHz and an ultra-compact geometry of 0.5 × 0.16 λ02. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spatial wave fields around floating bodies are important for the understanding of hydrodynamics, and particularly the wave drift forces, of floating bodies in waves; however, experimental measurement of these fields is challenging. This paper presents a stereo reconstruction method for three-dimensional (3D) surface wave fields around floating bodies in a wave tank. Styrofoam markers were attached to a flexible net in a regular grid, called a marker net, and were placed on the water surface to be used as targets for stereo cameras (SCs). A thin plate spline was applied to the markers detected by the SCs to reconstruct the 3D surface wave profile around a floating body model. The proposed method was validated by measuring the wave field around a cylindrical floating body with a footing at its bottom. These experiments were conducted under regular wave incidence conditions. A wave elevation time series measured using a servo-controlled wave gauge was used as the benchmark data. The 3D surface wave field reconstruction method was applied under three different conditions: without the model, with a fixed model, and with a freely oscillating model. The results showed reliable reconstructions of the scattering and radiation waves. The marker net's effects on the floating body's motion and the surrounding wave fields were shown to be negligible by comparing the results acquired with and without the marker net. We have theoretically investigated the spatial-temporal dynamics of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through a two-slit plasmonic antenna under femtosecond laser dual-beam irradiation. The dynamic interference of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam with the transiently excited surface plasmon polariton waves are proposed to characterize the particular spatial-temporal evolutions of EOT. It is revealed that the dynamic EOT can be flexibly switched with tunable symmetry through the respective slit of a two-slit plasmonic antenna by manipulating the phase correlation of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam. This is explained as tunable interference dynamics by phase control of surface plasmon polariton waves, allowing the dynamic modulation of EOT at optimized oblique incidences of dual-beams. Furthermore, we have obtained the unobserved traits of symmetry-broken transient spectra of EOT from the respective up- and down-slit of the antenna under crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam irradiation. This study can provide fundamental insights into the ultrafast dynamics of EOT in two-slit plasmonic antennas, which can be helpful to advance a wide range of applications, such as ultrafast plasmonic switch, ultrahigh resolution imaging, the transient amplification of non-linear effects, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we demonstrate that optical pulling forces (OPFs) can be induced by a hybrid dimer consisting of a Si nanoparticle (NP) and a coated nanoparticle with a gain core and Au shell under normal plane wave illumination. Analytical theory reveals that the underlying physical mechanism relies on interactions between the electric dipole (ED) modes excited in the NPs. As compared with the individual NP, it is found that the magnitude of optical force can be enlarged by almost three orders for the Si NP and one order for the coated gain NP in the coupled dimer. In addition, we find that the OPFs exerted on the NPs are heavily dependent on the gain level of the core materials, the incident polarization angle and the sizes of the NPs. More interestingly, we find that the OPF can also be exerted on a trimer system consisting of two identical Si NPs and a coated NP arranged in a line.
