Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and, by extension, fluoropolymers are ubiquitous in science, life, and the environment as perfluoroalkyl pollutants (PFAS). In all cases, it is difficult to transform these materials due to their chemical inertness. Herein, we report a direct amination process of PTFE and some fluoropolymers such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and Nafion by lithium alkylamide salts. Synthesizing these reactants extemporaneously between lithium metal and an aliphatic primary di- or triamine that also serves as a solvent leads to the rapid nucleophilic substitution of fluoride by an alkylamide moiety when in contact with the fluoropolymer. Moreover, lithium alkylamides dissolved in suitable solvents other than amines can react with fluoropolymers. This highly efficient one-pot process opens the way for further surface or bulk modification if needed, providing an easy, inexpensive, and fast experiment protocol on large scales.

Nanopipettes, as a class of solid-state nanopores, have evolved into universal tools in biomedicine for the detection of biomarkers and different biological analytes. Nanopipette-based methods combine high sensitivity, selectivity, single-molecule resolution, and multifunctionality. The features have significantly expanded interest in their applications for the biomolecular detection, imaging, and molecular diagnostics of real samples. Moreover, the ease of manufacturing nanopipettes, coupled with their compatibility with fluorescence and electrochemical methods, makes them ideal for portable point-of-care diagnostic devices. This review summarized the latest progress in nanopipette-based nanopore technology for the detection of biomarkers, DNA, RNA, proteins, and peptides, in particular β-amyloid or α-synuclein, emphasizing the impact of technology on molecular diagnostics. By addressing key challenges in single-molecule detection and expanding applications in diverse biological areas, nanopipettes are poised to play a transformative role in the future of personalized medicine. Cancer is a therapeutically challenging and genomically complicated disease. Pioneering studies have uncovered multifaceted aspects of cancer, ranging from intra- and inter-tumor heterogeneity, drug resistance, and genetic/epigenetic mutations. Loss of apoptosis is another critical aspect that makes cancer cells resistant to death. A substantial fraction of mechanistic information gleaned from cutting-edge studies has enabled researchers to develop near-to-complete resolution of the apoptotic pathway. Within the exciting frontiers of apoptosis, TRAIL (tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) has garnered phenomenal appreciation by interdisciplinary researchers principally because of its unique capability to target cancer cells. TRAIL-based monotherapies and combinatorial therapies have reached phase II and phase III clinical trials. Rapidly upgrading the list of clinical trials substantiates the clinically valuable role of TRAIL-based therapeutics in cancer therapy. However, there is a growing concern about the poor bioavailability and rapid clearance of TRAIL-based therapeutics. Excitingly, the charismatic field of nanotechnology offers solutions for different problems, and we have witnessed remarkable breakthroughs in the efficacy of TRAIL-based therapeutics using nanotechnological approaches. In this review, we have attempted to provide a summary about different nanotechnologically assisted delivery methods for TRAIL-based therapeutics in cell culture studies and animal model studies for the inhibition/prevention of cancer. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are cylindrical-shaped materials composed of hexagonally arranged hybridized carbon atoms with versatility in synthesis methods and diverse applications. This review is focused on the fabrication, physicochemical and spectroscopic characterization, and industrial applications of CNTs. This review discusses some promising synthesis methods for the preparation of CNTs such as catalytic chemical vapor deposition, arc discharge, and laser ablation. A comparative discussion is made between these synthesis methods in terms of strengths, opportunities and challenges. Furthermore, functionalization and purification of CNTs' surface leading to improved functionality has also been highlighted in this article. The condensation of water vapor plays a crucial role in various applications, including combating water scarcity. In this study, by employing molecular dynamics simulations, we delved into the impact of graphene coatings on water vapor condensation on copper surfaces. Unique to this work was the exploration of various levels of graphene coverage and distribution, a facet largely unexplored in prior investigations. The findings demonstrated a notable increase in the rate of water vapor condensation and heat transfer performance as the graphene coverage was reduced. Using graphene coverages of 84%, 68%, and 52%, the numbers of condensed water molecules were 664, 735, and 880 molecules/ns, respectively. One of the most important findings was that when using the same graphene coverage of 68%, the rate of water vapor condensation and heat transfer performance increased as the graphene coating became more distributed. The overall performance of the water condensation correlated well with the energy and vibrational interaction between the graphene and the copper. This phenomenon suggests how a hybrid surface can enhance the nucleation and growth of a droplet, which might be beneficial for tailoring graphene-coated copper surfaces for applications demanding efficient water vapor condensation. In recent years, carbon nanotubes have emerged as a potentially revolutionary material with numerous uses in biomedical applications. Compared to other nanoparticles, discrete multiwalled carbon nanotubes (dMWCNTs) have been shown to exhibit advantageous characteristics such as a high surface area-to-volume ratio, biocompatibility, and unique chemical and physical properties. dMWCNTs can be modified to load various molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids and are capable of crossing the cell membrane, making them attractive delivery vehicles for biomolecules. To investigate this, we measured the impact of dMWCNTs on the number of live and dead cells present during different stages of cell proliferation. Furthermore, we used transmission electron microscopy to produce evidence suggesting that dMWCNTs enter the cytoplasm of mammalian cells via an endocytosis-like process and ultimately escape into the cytoplasm. And lastly, we used live-cell staining, qPCR, and a T-cell activation detection assay to quantify the use of dMWCNTs as a delivery vehicle for a toxic, membrane-impermeable peptide, mRNA, siRNA, and a T-cell activating synthetic dsRNA. The outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, also known as the COVID-19 pandemic, is still a critical risk factor for both human life and the global economy. Although, several promising therapies have been introduced in the literature to inhibit SARS-CoV-2, most of them are synthetic drugs that may have some adverse effects on the human body. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to carry out an in-silico investigation into the medicinal properties of Petiveria alliacea L. (P. alliacea L.)-mediated phytocompounds for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infections since phytochemicals have fewer adverse effects compared to synthetic drugs. To explore potential phytocompounds from P. alliacea L. as candidate drug molecules, we selected the infection-causing main protease (Mpro) of SARS-CoV-2 as the receptor protein. The molecular docking analysis of these receptor proteins with the different phytocompounds of P. alliacea L. was performed using AutoDock Vina. Then, we selected the three top-ranked phytocompounds (myricitrin, engeletin, and astilbin) as the candidate drug molecules based on their highest binding affinity scores of −8.9, −8.7 and −8.3 (Kcal/mol), respectively. Then, a 100 ns molecular dynamics (MD) simulation study was performed for their complexes with Mpro using YASARA software, computed RMSD, RMSF, PCA, DCCM, MM/PBSA, and free energy landscape (FEL), and found their almost stable binding performance. In addition, biological activity, ADME/T, DFT, and drug-likeness analyses exhibited the suitable pharmacokinetics properties of the selected phytocompounds. Therefore, the results of this study might be a useful resource for formulating a safe treatment plan for SARS-CoV-2 infections after experimental validation in wet-lab and clinical trials. The administration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) has been conducted since 1988 by clinicians to enhance the clarity and interpretability of MR images. CAs based on gadolinium chelates are the clinical standard used worldwide for the diagnosis of various pathologies, such as the detection of brain lesions, the visualization of blood vessels, and the assessment of soft tissue disorders. However, due to ongoing concerns associated with the safety of gadolinium-based contrast agents, considerable efforts have been directed towards developing contrast agents with better relaxivities, reduced toxicity, and eventually combined therapeutic modalities. In this context, grafting (or encapsulating) paramagnetic metals or chelates onto (within) carbon-based nanoparticles is a straightforward approach enabling the production of contrast agents with high relaxivities while providing extensive tuneability regarding the functionalization of the nanoparticles. Here, we provide an overview of the parameters defining the efficacy of lanthanide-based contrast agents and the subsequent developments in the field of nanoparticular-based contrast agents incorporating paramagnetic species. Effective drug delivery is essential for cancer treatment. Drug delivery systems, which can be tailored to targeted transport and integrated tumor therapy, are vital in improving the efficiency of cancer treatment. Peptides play a significant role in various biological and physiological functions and offer high design flexibility, excellent biocompatibility, adjustable morphology, and biodegradability, making them promising candidates for drug delivery. This paper reviews peptide-mediated drug delivery systems, focusing on self-assembled peptides and peptide–drug conjugates. It discusses the mechanisms and structural control of self-assembled peptides, the varieties and roles of peptide–drug conjugates, and strategies to augment peptide stability. Human behaviour detection is relevant in many fields. During navigational tasks it is an indicator for environmental conditions. Therefore, monitoring people while they move along the street network provides insights on the environment. This is especially true for motorcyclists, who have to observe aspects such as road surface conditions or traffic very careful. We thus performed an experiment to check whether IMU data is sufficient to classify motorcyclist behaviour as a data source for later spatial and temporal analysis. The classification was done using XGBoost and proved successful for four out of originally five different types of behaviour. A classification accuracy of approximately 80% was achieved. Nanofluidics has a very promising future owing to its numerous applications in many domains. It remains, however, very difficult to understand the basic physico-chemical principles that control the behavior of solvents confined in nanometric channels. Here, water and ion transport in carbon nanotubes is investigated using classical force field molecular dynamics simulations. By combining one single walled carbon nanotube (uniformly charged or not) with two perforated graphene sheets, we mimic single nanopore devices similar to experimental ones. The graphitic edges delimit two reservoirs of water and ions in the simulation cell from which a voltage is imposed through the application of an external electric field. By analyzing the evolution of the electrolyte conductivity, the role of the carbon nanotube geometric parameters (radius and chirality) and of the functionalization of the carbon nanotube entrances with OH or COO− groups is investigated for different concentrations of group functions. Currently, nanopore-based technology for the determination of the functional activity of single enzyme molecules continues its development. The use of natural nanopores for studying single enzyme molecules is known. At that, the approach utilizing artificial solid-state nanopores is also promising but still understudied. Herein, we demonstrate the use of a nanotechnology-based approach for the investigation of the enzymatic activity of a single molecule of horseradish peroxidase with a solid-state nanopore. The artificial 5 nm solid-state nanopore has been formed in a 40 nm thick silicon nitride structure. A single molecule of HRP has been entrapped into the nanopore. The activity of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme molecule inserted in the nanopore has been monitored by recording the time dependence of the ion current through the nanopore in the course of the reaction of 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) oxidation reaction. We have found that in the process of ABTS oxidation in the presence of 2.5 mM hydrogen peroxide, individual HRP enzyme molecules are able to retain activity for approximately 700 s before a decrease in the ion current through the nanopore, which can be explained by structural changes of the enzyme. Simple Summary: Our objective was to investigate the impact of pN0(i+) or pN1mi in HER2-positive breast cancer patients undergoing up-front surgery on their outcomes. Survival was not adversely affected by pN0(i+) and pN1mi in 1771 HER2-positive patients. However, in the case of pT1a-b HER2-positive breast cancers, a negative impact on recurrence-free survival was observed specifically for patients with pN0(i+) and pN1mi diseases, particularly among those with pT1b tumors without adjuvant chemotherapy. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the pN0(i+) and pN1mi status in the decision-making process when discussing trastuzumab-based adjuvant chemotherapy for these patients. (1) Background: The independent negative prognostic value of isolated tumor cells or micro-metastases in axillary lymph nodes has been established in triple-negative breast cancers (BC). However, the prognostic significance of pN0(i+) or pN1mi in HER2-positive BCs treated by primary surgery remains unexplored. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the impact of pN0(i+) or pN1mi in HER2-positive BC patients undergoing up-front surgery on their outcomes. (2) Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 23,650 patients treated in 13 French cancer centers from 1991 to 2013. pN status was categorized as pN0, pN0(i+), pN1mi, and pNmacro. The effect of pN0(i+) or pN1mi on outcomes was investigated both in the entire cohort of patients and in pT1a-b tumors. (3) Results: Of 1771 HER2-positive BC patients included, pN status distributed as follows: 1047 pN0 (59.1%), 60 pN0(i+) (3.4%), 118 pN1mi (6.7%), and 546 pN1 macro-metastases (30.8%). pN status was significantly associated with sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary lymph node dissection, age, ER status, tumor grade, and size, lymphovascular invasion, adjuvant systemic therapy (ACt), and radiation therapy. With 61 months median follow-up (mean 63.2; CI 95% 61.5–64.9), only pN1 with macro-metastases was independently associated with a negative impact on overall, disease-free, recurrence-free, and metastasis-free survivals in multivariate analysis. In the pT1a-b subgroup including 474 patients, RFS was significantly decreased in multivariate analysis for pT1b BC without ACt (HR 2.365, 1.04–5.36, p = 0.039) and for pN0(i+)/pN1mi patients (HR 2.518, 1.03–6.14, p = 0.042). (4) Conclusions: Survival outcomes were not adversely affected by pN0(i+) and pN1mi in patients with HER2-positive BC. However, in the case of pT1a-b HER2-positive BC, a negative impact on RFS was observed specifically for patients with pN0(i+) and pN1mi diseases, particularly among those with pT1b tumors without ACt. Cisplatin (Cp), a chemotherapeutic agent, interacts with purines on tumor DNA, causing tumor cell apoptosis. However, cisplatin has the characteristics of non-specific distribution and lack of selectivity, resulting in systemic toxicity. Moreover, it cannot maintain the drug's high concentration in the tumor-weak acid environment. These flaws of cisplatin restrict its use in clinical applications. Therefore, a pH-responsive carbon nanotube-modified nano-drug delivery system (CNTs/Gel/Cp) was constructed in this study using gelatin (Gel)-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs/Gel) loaded with cisplatin to release drugs precisely and slowly, preventing premature inactivation and maintaining an effective concentration. When MCp:MCNTs/Gel = 1:1, the drug reaches the highest loading rate and entrapment efficiency. To achieve the sustained-release effect, CNTs/Gel/Cp can release the medicine steadily for a long time in a pH environment of 6.0. Additionally, CNTs/Gel/Cp display antitumor properties comparable to cisplatin in a manner that varies with the dosage administered. These findings indicate that CNTs/Gel/Cp have an effective, sustained release of cisplatin and a good antitumor effect, providing a theoretical and experimental basis for the clinical application of modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a new drug delivery system. This review study aims to present, in a condensed manner, the significance of the use of crystalline carbon-based nanomaterials in biomedical applications. Crystalline carbon-based nanomaterials, encompassing graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes, and graphene quantum dots, have emerged as promising materials for the development of medical devices in various biomedical applications. These materials possess inorganic semiconducting attributes combined with organic π-π stacking features, allowing them to efficiently interact with biomolecules and present enhanced light responses. By harnessing these unique properties, carbon-based nanomaterials offer promising opportunities for future advancements in biomedicine. Recent studies have focused on the development of these nanomaterials for targeted drug delivery, cancer treatment, and biosensors. The conjugation and modification of carbon-based nanomaterials have led to significant advancements in a plethora of therapies and have addressed limitations in preclinical biomedical applications. Boron nitride nanotubes have been widely used as drug delivery vehicles and for the controlled release of targeted therapeutic drugs. In this study, we calculated the encapsulation efficiencies of three organophosphorus pesticides, parathion, chlorpyrifos, and coumaphous, using quantum chemical methods. The results show that the encapsulation energy of zigzag BNNT(20,0) is lower than that of armchair BNNT(12,12) to encapsulate parathion. Al doping helps to decrease the encapsulation energy and Al-doped zigzag BNNT(20,0) + parathion has the greatest binding affinity. In addition, the energy gap of armchair BNNT(12,12) encapsulating organophosphorus pesticides changed significantly. Al doping reduces the band gap of boron nitride nanotubes. The emergence of life has been a subject of intensive research for decades. Different approaches and different environmental "cradles" have been studied, from space to the deep sea. Since the recent discovery of a natural electrical current through deep-sea hydrothermal vents, a new energy source is considered for the transition from inorganic to organic. This energy source (electron donor) is used by modern microorganisms via a new trophic type, called electrotrophy. In this review, we draw a parallel between this metabolism and a new theory for the emergence of life based on this electrical electron flow. Each step of the creation of life is revised in the new light of this prebiotic electrochemical context, going from the evaluation of similar electrical current during the Hadean, the CO2 electroreduction into a prebiotic primordial soup, the production of proto-membranes, the energetic system inspired of the nitrate reduction, the proton gradient, and the transition to a planktonic proto-cell. Finally, this theory is compared to the two other theories in hydrothermal context to assess its relevance and overcome the limitations of each. The TRAIL (TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) apoptotic pathway is extensively exploited in the development of targeted antitumor therapy due to TRAIL specificity towards its cognate receptors, namely death receptors DR4 and DR5. Although therapies targeting the TRAIL pathway have encountered many obstacles in attempts at clinical implementation for cancer treatment, the unique features of the TRAIL signaling pathway continue to attract the attention of researchers. Special attention is paid to the design of novel nanoscaled delivery systems, primarily aimed at increasing the valency of the ligand for improved death receptor clustering that enhances apoptotic signaling. Optionally, complex nanoformulations can allow the encapsulation of several therapeutic molecules for a combined synergistic effect, for example, chemotherapeutic agents or photosensitizers. Scaffolds for the developed nanodelivery systems are fabricated by a wide range of conventional clinically approved materials and innovative ones, including metals, carbon, lipids, polymers, nanogels, protein nanocages, virus-based nanoparticles, dendrimers, DNA origami nanostructures, and their complex combinations. Most nanotherapeutics targeting the TRAIL pathway are aimed at tumor therapy and theranostics. However, given the wide spectrum of action of TRAIL due to its natural role in immune system homeostasis, other therapeutic areas are also involved, such as liver fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and inflammatory diseases caused by bacterial infections. Nanoscale control of chemical reactivity, manipulation of reaction pathways, and ultimately driving the outcome of chemical reactions are quickly becoming reality. A variety of tools are concurring to establish such capability. The confinement of guest molecules inside nanoreactors, such as the hollow nanostructures of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), is a straightforward and highly fascinating approach. It mechanically hinders some molecular movements but also decreases the free energy of translation of the system with respect to that of a macroscopic solution. Here, we examined, at the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) level, the effect of confinement inside CNTs on nucleophilic substitution (SN2) and elimination (syn-E2 and anti-E2) using as a model system the reaction between ethyl chloride and chloride. Our results show that the three reaction mechanisms are kinetically and thermodynamically affected by the CNT host. The size of the nanoreactor, i.e., the CNT diameter, represents the key factor to control the energy profiles of the reactions. A careful analysis of the interactions between the CNTs and the reactive system allowed us to identify the driving force of the catalytic process. The electrostatic term controls the reaction kinetics in the SN2 and syn/anti-E2 reactions. Simple Summary: TRAIL is a death ligand cytokine, predominantly used by effector immune cells to kill malignantly transformed cells. Since its discovery, TRAIL has attracted a lot of attention as a promising anticancer drug due to its selective action against cancer cells, promising a safe, low-toxicity treatment. Despite its promising characteristics, clinical trials have not delivered on this promise, due to issues with the poor in vivo biological activity of recombinant TRAIL formulations. Nanoparticles have the potential to overcome these limitations, and an increasing number of studies have reported very promising preclinical results. Here, we summarize the potential of TRAIL for cancer therapy, and provide a critical assessment of the challenges and the potential of various formulations of nanovehicles designed to date for TRAIL-based cancer therapy. The death ligand tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), a member of the TNF cytokine superfamily, has long been recognized for its potential as a cancer therapeutic due to its low toxicity against normal cells. However, its translation into a therapeutic molecule has not been successful to date, due to its short in vivo half-life associated with insufficient tumor accumulation and resistance of tumor cells to TRAIL-induced killing. Nanotechnology has the capacity to offer solutions to these limitations. This review provides a perspective and a critical assessment of the most promising approaches to realize TRAIL's potential as an anticancer therapeutic, including the development of fusion constructs, encapsulation, nanoparticle functionalization and tumor-targeting, and discusses the current challenges and future perspectives. In recent years, graphene (CC) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have been widely used in water purification and environmental remediation because of their unique physical and chemical properties. Therefore, based on the reaction enthalpy, equilibrium structure, atomic charge, molecular, orbital and electronic spectrum provided by a semiempirical PM7 method, the adsorption of pesticides, antibiotics and microcystin-LR on graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nano-systems was examined. For the adsorption of diazinon, parathion, oxacillin and ciprofloxacin, the results show that as the bond length decreases and the atomic partial charge increases, the adsorption energy increases. The removal efficiency for antibiotics is higher than that for pesticides. Regarding the co-adsorption of pesticides/antibiotics and microcystin-LR on nano-systems, hydrogen bonds play a crucial role in stabilizing the whole structure. In addition, the non-covalent interaction (NCI) diagrams show the adsorption strength of the nano-systems to the pesticides/antibiotics. The energy gap and HSAB global descriptors are calculated based on the energy values of HOMO and LUMO. This review focuses on the therapeutic effects of ions when released in physiological environments. Recent studies have shown that metallic ions like Ag+, Sr2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, Ca2+, P+5, etc., have shown promising results in drug delivery systems and regenerative medicine. These metallic ions can be loaded in nanoparticles, mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs), hydroxyapatite (HA), calcium phosphates, polymeric coatings, and salt solutions. The metallic ions can exhibit different functions in the physiological environment such as antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, bioactive, biocompatible, and angiogenic effects. Furthermore, the metals/metalloid ions can be loaded into scaffolds to improve osteoblast proliferation, differentiation, bone development, fibroblast growth, and improved wound healing efficacy. Moreover, different ions possess different therapeutic limits. Therefore, further mechanisms need to be developed for the highly controlled and sustained release of these ions. This review paper summarizes the recent progress in the use of metallic/metalloid ions in regenerative medicine and encourages further study of ions as a solution to cure diseases. HfS2 has recently emerged as a promising 2D semiconductor, but the lack of a reliable method to produce continuous films on a large scale has hindered its spreading. The atomic layer deposition of the material with the precursor tetrakis-dimethylamino-hafnium with H2S is a relatively novel solution to this problem. This paper shows that it is a facile approach to synthesizing homogeneous and smooth HfS2 layers in a controlled and reproducible manner. The deposition is examined at different temperatures and layer thicknesses, exploring the ALD window of the deposition and the chemical, morphological and electronic properties of the films. The method yielded films with wafer-sized uniformity and controlled properties and is, thus, a promising way to prepare this important transition metal dichalcogenide material. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a global health problem responsible for 10% of all cancer incidences and 9.4% of all cancer deaths worldwide. The number of new cases increases per annum, whereas the lack of effective therapies highlights the need for novel therapeutic approaches. Conventional treatment methods, such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, are widely applied in oncology practice. Their therapeutic success is little, and therefore, the search for novel technologies is ongoing. Many efforts have focused recently on the development of safe and efficient cancer nanomedicines. Nanoparticles are among them. They are uniquewith their properties on a nanoscale and hold the potential to exploit intrinsic metabolic differences between cancer and healthy cells. This feature allows them to induce high levels of toxicity in cancer cells with little damage to the surrounding healthy tissues. Graphene oxide is a promising 2D material found to play an important role in cancer treatments through several strategies: direct killing and chemosensitization, drug and gene delivery, and phototherapy. Several new treatment approaches based on nanoparticles, particularly graphene oxide, are currently under research in clinical trials, and some have already been approved. Here, we provide an update on the recent advances in nanomaterials-based CRC-targeted therapy, with special attention to graphene oxide nanomaterials. Microbial diseases have been declared one of the main threats to humanity, which is why, in recent years, great interest has been generated in the development of nanocomposites with antimicrobial capacity. The present work studied two magnetic nanocomposites based on graphene oxide (GO) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The synthesis of these magnetic nanocomposites consisted of three phases: first, the synthesis of iron magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), second, the adsorption of the photosensitizer menthol-Zinc phthalocyanine (ZnMintPc) into MWCNTs and GO, and the third phase, encapsulation in poly (N-vinylcaprolactam-co-poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate)) poly (VCL-co-PEGDA) polymer VCL/PEGDA a biocompatible hydrogel, to obtain the magnetic nanocomposites VCL/PEGDA-MNPs-MWCNTs-ZnMintPc and VCL/PEGDA-MNPs-GO-ZnMintPc. In vitro studies were carried out using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and the Candida albicans yeast based on the Photodynamic/Photothermal (PTT/PDT) effect. This research describes the nanocomposites' optical, morphological, magnetic, and photophysical characteristics and their application as antimicrobial agents. The antimicrobial effect of magnetics nanocomposites was evaluated based on the PDT/PTT effect. For this purpose, doses of 65 mW·cm−2 with 630 nm light were used. The VCL/PEGDA-MNPs-GO-ZnMintPc nanocomposite eliminated E. coli and S. aureus colonies, while the VCL/PEGDA-MNPs-MWCNTs-ZnMintPc nanocomposite was able to kill the three types of microorganisms. Plasma discharging treatment (hydroxylation) was conducted on copper surfaces for the subsequent electro-polymerization procedure of polypyrrole (PPy) coating (d-PPy). The hydroxylated surface could solve the criticized adhesion strength and protection efficiency of electropolymerized coatings for metal substrate in corrosive media. Compared with the counterpart obtained via passivation pretreatment (p-PPy), a well-adhered d-PPy layer was acquired on the hydroxylated copper surface, which earned a satisfactory adhesion grade, compactness and conductivity. Appreciable protection of d-PPy was measured for copper in the artificial seawater (ASW) at 298 K via electrochemical and surface analyses. Results of electrochemical measurements indicated that d-PPy coating effectively retarded copper corrosion in ASW with a lowered corrosion current density and improved charge transfer resistance. Surface analysis revealed that the typical morphology of PPy was retained after 240 h immersion in ASW. A favorable physical barrier and anodic protection efficacy might account for the superior protection of d-PPy coating for the underlying copper. Molecular dynamics simulations for the deposition of PPy chains on pristine and hydroxylated copper planes provided a definite correlation between the theoretical calculations and experimental observations. Understanding the electronic transport mechanisms in molecular junctions is of paramount importance to design molecular devices and circuits. In particular, the role of the different junction components contributing to the current decay—namely the attenuation factor—is yet to be clarified. In this short review, we discuss the main theoretical approaches to tackle this question in the non-resonant tunneling regime. We illustrate our purpose through standard symmetric junctions and through recent studies on hybrid molecular junctions using graphene electrodes. In each case, we highlight the contribution from the anchoring groups, the molecular backbone and the electrodes, respectively. In this respect, we consider different anchoring groups and asymmetric junctions. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are extensively adopted in the applications of biotechnology and biomedicine. Their interactions with cell membranes are of great importance for understanding the toxicity of CNTs and the application of drug delivery. In this paper, we use atomic molecular dynamics simulations to study the permeation and orientation of pristine and functionalized CNTs in a lipid bilayer. Pristine CNT (PCNT) can readily permeate into the membrane and reside in the hydrophobic region without specific orientation. The insertion of PCNTs into the lipid bilayer is robust and independent on the lengths of PCNTs. Due to the presence of hydroxyl groups on both ends of the functionalized CNT (FCNT), FCNT prefers to stand upright in the lipid bilayer center. Compared with PCNT, FCNT is more suitable to be a bridge connecting the inner and outer lipid membrane. The inserted CNTs have no distinct effects on membrane structure. However, they may block the ion channels. In addition, preliminary explorations on the transport properties of CNTs show that the small hydrophobic molecule carbon dioxide can enter both PCNT and FCNT hollow channels. However, hydrophilic molecule urea is prone to penetrate the PCNT but finds it difficult to enter the FCNT. Developing therapeutics that induce apoptosis in cancer cells has become an increasingly attractive approach for the past 30 years. The discovery of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily members and more specifically TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), the only cytokine of the family capable of eradicating selectively cancer cells, led to the development of numerous TRAIL derivatives targeting death receptor 4 (DR4) and death receptor 5 (DR5) for cancer therapy. With a few exceptions, preliminary attempts to use recombinant TRAIL, agonistic antibodies, or derivatives to target TRAIL agonist receptors in the clinic have been fairly disappointing. Nonetheless, a tremendous effort, worldwide, is being put into the development of novel strategic options to target TRAIL receptors. Antibodies and derivatives allow for the design of novel and efficient agonists. We summarize and discuss here the advantages and drawbacks of the soar of TRAIL therapeutics, from the first developments to the next generation of agonistic products, with a particular insight on new concepts. In recent years, aquaporin biomimetic membranes (ABMs) for water separation have gained considerable interest. Although the first ABMs are commercially available, there are still many challenges associated with further ABM development. Here, we discuss the interplay of the main components of ABMs: aquaporin proteins (AQPs), block copolymers for AQP reconstitution, and polymer-based supporting structures. First, we briefly cover challenges and review recent developments in understanding the interplay between AQP and block copolymers. Second, we review some experimental characterization methods for investigating AQP incorporation including freeze-fracture transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, stopped-flow light scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Third, we focus on recent efforts in embedding reconstituted AQPs in membrane designs that are based on conventional thin film interfacial polymerization techniques. Finally, we describe some new developments in interfacial polymerization using polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane cages for increasing the physical and chemical durability of thin film composite membranes. Discovery of fullerenes and other nanosized carbon allotropes has opened a vast new field of possibilities in nanotechnology and has become one of the most promising research areas. Carbon nanomaterials have drawn interest as carriers of biologically pertinent molecules due to their distinctive physical, chemical and physiological properties. In this paper, we propose a bio-inspired, two-layer, multiple-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-polypeptide composite sensing device. The MWCNT serves as a responsive and conductive layer, and the nonselective polypeptide (40 mer) coating the top of the MWCNT acts as a filter into which small molecular gases pass. Instead of using selective peptides to sense specific odorants, we propose using nonselective, peptide-based sensors to monitor various types of volatile organic compounds. In this study, depending on gas interaction and molecular sizes, the randomly selected polypeptide enabled the recognition of certain polar volatile chemical vapors, such as amines, and the improved discernment of low-concentration gases. The results of our investigation demonstrated that the polypeptide-coated sensors can detect ammonia at a level of several hundred ppm and barely responded to triethylamine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent progress in the combination of nucleic acids and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been briefly reviewed here. Since discovering the hybridization phenomenon of DNA molecules and CNTs in 2003, a large amount of fundamental and applied research has been carried out. Among thousands of papers published since 2003, approximately 240 papers focused on biological applications were selected and categorized based on the types of nucleic acids used, but not the types of CNTs. This survey revealed that the hybridization phenomenon is strongly affected by various factors, such as DNA sequences, and for this reason, fundamental studies on the hybridization phenomenon are important. Additionally, many research groups have proposed numerous practical applications, such as nanobiosensors. In recent years, nanotechnology-based approaches have resulted in the development of new alternative sustainable technologies for water purification. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials are an emerging class of materials for nanofiltration membranes. In this work, we report the production, characterisation and testing of a promising nanofiltration membrane made from water-exfoliated boron nitride (BN) 2D nanosheets. The membranes have been tested for water purification and removal of typical water-soluble dyes such as methyl orange, methylene blue and Evans blue, with the water-exfoliated BN membranes achieving retention values close to 100%. In addition, we compared the performance of membranes made from water-exfoliated BN with those produced from BN using sonication-assisted liquid exfoliation in selected organic solvents such as 2-propanol and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. It was found that membranes from the water-exfoliated BN showed superior performance. We believe this research opens up a unique opportunity for the development of new high-performance environmentally friendly membranes for nanofiltration and new sustainable separation technologies. The chemical vapor deposition of hexagonal boron nitride layers from BCl3 and NH3 is highly beneficial for scalable synthesis with high controllability, yet multiple challenges such as corrosive reaction or by-product formation have hindered its successful demonstration. Here, we report the synthesis of polycrystalline hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layers on copper foil using BCl3 and NH3. The sequential pulse injection of precursors leads to the formation of atomically thin h-BN layers with a polycrystalline structure. The relationship between growth temperature and crystallinity of the h-BN film is investigated using transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Investigation on the initial growth mode achieved by the suppression of precursor supply revealed the formation of triangular domains and existence of preferred crystal orientations. Over the past several decades, an increasing amount of attention has been given to catalytic combustion as an environmentally friendly process. However, major impediments to large-scale application still arise on the materials side. Here, we review catalytic combustion on thin film catalysts in view of highlighting some interesting features. Catalytic films open the way for new designs of structured catalysts and the construction of catalysts for catalytic combustion. A special place is occupied by materials in the form of very thin films that reveal catalytic activity for various chemical reactions. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are characterized by a combination of rather unique physical and chemical properties, which makes them interesting biocompatible nanostructured materials for various applications, including in the biomedical field. SWCNTs are not inert carriers of drug molecules, as they may interact with various biological macromolecules, including ion channels. To investigate the mechanisms of the inhibitory effects of SWCNTs on the muscarinic receptor cation current (mICAT), induced by intracellular GTPγs (200 μM), in isolated mouse ileal myocytes, we have used the patch-clamp method in the whole-cell configuration. Here, we use molecular docking/molecular dynamics simulations and direct patch-clamp recordings of whole-cell currents to show that SWCNTs, purified and functionalized by carboxylation in water suspension containing single SWCNTs with a diameter of 0.5–1.5 nm, can inhibit mICAT, which is mainly carried by TRPC4 cation channels in ileal smooth muscle cells, and is the main regulator of cholinergic excitation–contraction coupling in the small intestinal tract. This inhibition was voltage-independent and associated with a shortening of the mean open time of the channel. These results suggest that SWCNTs cause a direct blockage of the TRPC4 channel and may represent a novel class of TRPC4 modulators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pancreatic cancer is the most common lethal tumor in America. This lethality is related to limited treatment options. Conventional treatments involve the non-specific use of chemotherapeutical agents such as 5-FU, capecitabine, gemcitabine, paclitaxel, cisplatin, oxaliplatin, or irinotecan, which produce several side effects. This review focuses on the use of targeted nanoparticles, such as metallic nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, liposomes, micelles, and carbon nanotubes as an alternative to standard treatment for pancreatic cancer. The principal objective of nanoparticles is reduction of the side effects that conventional treatments produce, mostly because of their non-specificity. Several molecular markers of pancreatic cancer cells have been studied to target nanoparticles and improve current treatment. Therefore, properly functionalized nanoparticles with specific aptamers or antibodies can be used to recognize pancreatic cancer cells. Due to the semi-liquid nature and uneven morphologies of biological membranes, indentation may occur in a range of non-ideal conditions. These conditions are relatively unstudied and may alter the physical characteristics of the process. One of the basic challenges in the construction of nanoindenters is to appropriately align the nanotube tip and approach the membrane at a perpendicular angle. To investigate the impact of deviations from this ideal, we performed non-equilibrium steered molecular dynamics simulations of the indentation of phospholipid membranes by homogeneous CNT and non-homogeneous SiCNT indenters. The uncontrolled release of pharmaceutical drugs into the environment raised serious concerns in the last decades as they can potentially exert adverse effects on living organisms even at the low concentrations at which they are typically found. Among them, platinum based cytostatic drugs (Pt CDs) are among the most used drugs in cancer treatments which are administered via intravenous infusion and released partially intact or as transformation products. In this review, the studies on environmental occurrence, transformation, potential ecotoxicity, and possible treatment for the removal of platinum cytostatic compounds are revised. The analysis of the literature highlighted the generally low total platinum concentration values (from a few tens of ng L−1 to a few hundred μg L−1) found in hospital effluents. Additionally, several studies highlighted how hospitals are sources of a minor fraction of the total Pt CDs found in the environment due to the slow excretion rate which is longer than the usual treatment durations. Only some data about the impact of the exposure to low levels of Pt CDs on the health of flora and fauna are present in literature. In some cases, adverse effects have been shown to occur in living organisms, even at low concentrations. Further ecotoxicity data are needed to support or exclude their chronic effects on the ecosystem. Nanotubes, such as those made of carbon, silicon, and boron nitride, have attracted tremendous interest in the research community and represent the starting point for the development of nanotechnology. In the current study, the use of nanotubes as a means of drug delivery and, more specifically, for cancer therapy, is investigated. Using traditional applied mathematical modelling, I derive explicit analytical expressions to understand the encapsulation behaviour of drug molecules into different types of single-walled nanotubes. The interaction energies between three anticancer drugs, namely, cisplatin, carboplatin, and doxorubicin, and the nanotubes are observed by adopting the Lennard–Jones potential function together with the continuum approach. This study is focused on determining a favourable size and an appropriate type of nanotube to encapsulate anticancer drugs. The results indicate that the drug molecules with a large size tend to be located inside a large nanotube and that encapsulation depends on the radius and type of the tube. For the three nanotubes used to encapsulate drugs, the results show that the nanotube radius must be at least 5.493 Å for cisplatin, 6.452 Å for carboplatin, and 10.208 Å for doxorubicin, and the appropriate type to encapsulate drugs is the boron nitride nanotube. There are some advantages to using different types of nanotubes as a means of drug delivery, such as improved chemical stability, reduced synthesis costs, and improved biocompatibility. Ammonia is one of the most frequently produced chemicals in the world, and thus, reliable measurements of different NH3 concentrations are critical for a variety of industries, among which are the agricultural and healthcare sectors. The currently available technologies for the detection of NH3 provide accurate identification; however, they are limited by size, portability, and fabrication cost. Therefore, in this work, we report the laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) decorated with tin oxide nanoparticles (SnO2 NPs), which act as sensitive materials in chemiresistive NH3 sensors. We demonstrate that the LIFT-fabricated sensors can detect NH3 at room temperature and have a response time of 13 s (for 25 ppm NH3). In addition, the laser-fabricated sensors are fully reversible when exposed to multiple cycles of NH3 and have an excellent theoretical limit of detection of 24 ppt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanoparticles based on the biocompatible amphiphilic poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (Amph-PVP) derivatives are promising for drug delivery. Amph-PVPs self-aggregate in aqueous solutions with the formation of micellar nanoscaled structures. Amph-PVP nanoparticles are able to immobilize therapeutic molecules under mild conditions. As is well known, many efforts have been made to exploit the DR5-dependent apoptosis induction for cancer treatment. The aim of the study was to fabricate Amph-PVP-based nanoparticles covalently conjugated with antitumor DR5-specific TRAIL (Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) variant DR5-B and to evaluate their in vitro cytotoxicity in 3D tumor spheroids. The Amph-PVP nanoparticles were obtained from a 1:1 mixture of unmodified and maleimide-modified polymeric chains, while DR5-B protein was modified by cysteine residue at the N-end for covalent conjugation with Amph-PVP. The nanoparticles were found to enhance cytotoxicity effects compared to those of free DR5-B in both 2D (monolayer culture) and 3D (tumor spheroids) in vitro models. The cytotoxicity of the nanoparticles was investigated in human cell lines, namely breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 and colorectal carcinomas HCT116 and HT29. Notably, DR5-B conjugation with Amph-PVP nanoparticles sensitized resistant multicellular tumor spheroids from MCF-7 and HT29 cells. Taking into account the nanoparticles loading ability with a wide range of low-molecular-weight antitumor chemotherapeutics into hydrophobic core and feasibility of conjugation with hydrophilic therapeutic molecules by click chemistry, we suggest further development to obtain a versatile system for targeted drug delivery into tumor cells. Etched ion-track polycarbonate membranes with conical nanochannels of aspect ratios of ~3000 are coated with Al2O3, TiO2, and SiO2 thin films of thicknesses between 10 and 20 nm by atomic layer deposition (ALD). By combining ion-track technology and ALD, the fabrication of two kinds of functional structures with customized surfaces is presented: (i) arrays of free-standing conical nanotubes with controlled geometry and wall thickness, interesting for, e.g., drug delivery and surface wettability regulation, and (ii) single nanochannel membranes with inorganic surfaces and adjustable isoelectric points for nanofluidic applications. Carbon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. In addition to the well-known crystallographic modifications such as graphite and diamond, other allotropic carbon modifications such as graphene-based nanomaterials and carbon nanotubes have recently come to the fore. These carbon nanomaterials can be designed to help deliver or target drugs more efficiently and to innovate therapeutic approaches, especially for cancer treatment, but also for the development of new diagnostic agents for malignancies and are expected to help combine molecular imaging for diagnosis with therapies. This review paper is devoted to an extended analysis of ammonia gas sensors based on carbon nanomaterials. It provides a detailed comparison of various types of active materials used for the detection of ammonia, e.g., carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, graphene, graphene oxide, and related materials. Different parameters that can affect the performance of chemiresistive gas sensors are discussed. The paper also gives a comparison of the sensing characteristics (response, response time, recovery time, operating temperature) of gas sensors based on carbon nanomaterials. The results of our tests on ammonia gas sensors using various techniques are analyzed. The problems related to the recovery of sensors using various approaches are also considered.
