Background: We aimed to explore the predictive role of soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) in patients undergoing coronary angiography by systematically evaluating its association with adverse cardiovascular events at 10 years follow-up. Methods: The KORONEF study was a single-center, observational, prospective study with 492 subjects included. In the multivariable Cox regression model, we checked the impact of suPAR, neutrophil elastase, myeloperoxidase, and DNase 1 on long-term outcomes. Results: The mean study population age was 64.4 ± 9.9 years, and there were 37.2% women. We divided the population into tertiles of suPAR levels (T1 0.793–2.135 ng/mL; T2 2.136–2.868 ng/mL; and T3 2.872–8.677 ng/mL). Patients with higher suPAR concentrations were more often females (tertile 1 vs. tertile 3: 27.4% vs. 50.6%, p < 0.001) and older age (60.8 ± 8.7 years vs. 68.8 ± 9.5 years, p < 0.001). They also characterized higher incidence of diabetes (17.7% vs. 38.0%, p < 0.001), previous myocardial infarction (22% vs. 44.8%, p < 0.001), and chronic kidney disease (3% vs. 18.4%, p < 0.001), but lower incidence of dyslipidemia (54.3% vs. 35.6%). The 10-year all-cause death rates were 14.6% vs. 34.1%, HR 2.68, 95% CI 1.66–4.33, p < 0.001 for tertile 2, and 14.6% vs. 39.9%, HR 3.24, 95% CI 2.03–5.17, p < 0.001 for tertile 3. The optimal cut-off suPAR value of 2.39 ng/mL provided a sensitivity of 66.9% and a specificity of 54.6% in predicting all-cause death. Conclusions: The association of elevated suPAR with increased mortality risk suggests its potential relevance in predicting long-term outcomes and may help inform more individualized management strategies for high-risk patients. Background: The identification of clinical factors affecting the gray-scale median (GSM) and determination of GSM diagnostic utility for differentiating between symptomatic and asymptomatic internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. Methods: This study included 45 patients with asymptomatic and 40 patients with symptomatic ICA stenosis undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Echolucency of carotid plaque was determined using computerized techniques for the GSM analysis. Study groups were compared in terms of clinical risk factors, coexisting comorbidities, and used pharmacotherapy. Results: Mean GSM values in the symptomatic group were significantly lower than in the asymptomatic group (p < 0.001). Both in the univariate as well as in the multiple regression analysis, GSM was significantly correlated with D-dimers and fasting plasma glucose levels and tended to correlate with β-adrenoceptor antagonist use in the symptomatic group. In asymptomatic patients, GSM was associated with the presence of grade 2 and grade 3 hypertension, and tended to correlate with the use of metformin, sulfonylureas, and statin. Independent factors for GSM in this group remained as grade 3 hypertension and statin's therapy. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis revealed that GSM differentiated symptomatic from asymptomatic ICA stenosis with sensitivity and specificity of 73% and 80%, respectively. Conclusion: The completely diverse clinical parameters may affect GSM in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients undergoing CEA, whose clinical characteristics were similar in terms of most of the compared parameters. Background: We aimed to characterize the population of consecutive patients undergoing coronary angiography with simultaneous renal artery angiography and assess prognostic factors at a 10 year follow-up. Methods: The KORONEF study was a prospective, single-center, observational, and descriptive study with 492 patients included. We analyzed several baseline demographics, clinical and periprocedural characteristics, and laboratory data, and we assessed the results of coronary angiography and renal artery angiography. Results: The study population consisted of 37.2% women, and the mean age was 64.4 ± 9.9 years (min. 30 years, max. 89 years). Angiography revealed significant renal artery stenosis (RAS) in 35 (7.1%) patients. Among patients with significant RAS (≥50%), we observed more women (57.1% vs. 35.7%, p = 0.011), and patients were older (69.1 ± 10.4 years vs. 64.0 ± 9.7 years, p = 0.005). In the whole population, all-cause death was reported in 29.9% of patients, myocardial infarction (MI) rate—in 11.8%, and stroke—in 4.9%. In the multivariable analysis, independent predictors of death were age 65–75 years (HR 2.88), age > 75 years (HR 8.07), diabetes (HR 1.59), previous MI (HR 1.64), chronic kidney disease (HR 2.22), unstable angina (HR 0.37), and left ventricular ejection fraction > 60% (HR 0.43). The literature analysis did not indicate any studies on fluorination tests of carbon nanocomposite coatings doped with transition metals in a form of nanocrystalline metal carbide in amorphous carbon matrix (nc-MeC/a-C). As a model coating to investigate the effect of fluorination in a tetrafluoromethane (CF4) atmosphere, a nanocomposite carbon coating doped with chromium-forming nanocrystals of chromium carbides in a-C matrix (nc-CrC/a-C) produced by magnetron sputtering from graphite targets and using a Pulse-DC type medium frequency power supply was chosen. After the deposition of the gradient chromium carbonitride (CrCN) adhesive sublayer, the fluorination of the main coating was conducted in a reactive mode in an (Ar + CF4) atmosphere at various CF4 content. It was observed that the presence of CF4 in the atmosphere resulted in a reduced amount of chromium carbides formed in favor of chromium fluorides. Thus far, this is an observation that seems unnoticed by the carbon coatings researchers. Fluorine was assumed to bond much more readily to carbon than to chromium, due to the stability of tetrafluoromethane (CF4). The opposite seems to be true. The mechanical properties (nano-hardness and Young's modulus) and tribological properties in the 'pin-on-disc' friction pair are presented, along with the analysis of bonds occurring between chromium, carbon, and fluorine by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Background: Impulsivity assessment may serve as a valuable clinical tool in the stratification of suicide risk. Acting without forethought is a crucial feature in the psychopathology of many psychiatric disturbances and corresponds with suicidal ideations, behaviors, and attempts. Methods: We present data on biological and psychological correlates of impulsivity among young adults (n = 47). Psychological analysis included both the self-description questionnaire—Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11)—and neuropsychological behavioral tests, including the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), the Simple Response Time task (SRT), and the Continuous Performance Test (CPT). mRNA and micro-RNA were isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Expression levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) mRNA and its regulatory micro RNAs, mir-1-3p, mir-15a-5p, mir-26a-5p, mir-26b-5p, and mir-195-5p, were analyzed using the quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) method. proBDNF and BDNF plasma protein levels were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: Significant correlations between BDNF mRNA and mir-15a-5p as well as proBDNF levels and mir-1-3p were detected. proBDNF protein levels correlated with motor and perseverance, while mir-26b correlated with cognitive complexity subdimensions of the BIS-11 scale. Correlations between BDNF, miRNAs, and the results of neuropsychological tests were also detected. Conclusions: The BDNF pathway shows a clinical potential in searching for biomarkers of impulse-control impairment. These days, the use of natural materials is required for sustainable and consequently plus-, zero- and low-energy construction. One of the main objectives of this research was to demonstrate that pelite concrete block masonry can be a structural and thermal insulation material. In order to determine the actual thermal insulation parameters of the building partition, in situ experimental research was carried out in real conditions, taking into account the temperature distribution at different heights of the partition. Empirical measurements were made at five designated heights of the partition with temperature and humidity parameters varying over time. The described experiment was intended to verify the technical parameters of perlite concrete in terms of its thermal insulation properties as a construction material used for vertical partitions. It was shown on the basis of the results obtained that the masonry made of perlite concrete blocks with dimensions of 24 × 24.5 × 37.5 cm laid on the mounting foam can be treated as a building element that meets both the structural and thermal insulation requirements of vertical single-layer partitions. However, it is important for the material to work in a dry environment, since, as shown, a wet perlite block has twice the thermal conductivity coefficient. The results of the measurements were confirmed, for they were known from the physics of buildings, the general principles of the formation of heat and the moisture flow in the analysed masonry of a perlite block. Illustrating this regularity is shown from the course of temperature and moisture in the walls. The proposed new building material is an alternative to walls with a layer of thermal insulation made of materials such as polystyrene or wool and fits into the concept of sustainable construction, acting against climate change, reducing building operating costs, improving living and working conditions as well as fulfilling international obligations regarding environmental goals. This study explores the impact of butadiene rubber (BR) crystallization on the low-temperature properties of butadiene/silicone (VMQ) rubber blends (BR/VMQ) designed for Martian applications. Two types of BR, semi-crystalline high-cis Buna CB24 and amorphous Buna CB550, were blended with VMQ, and their mechanical and thermal properties were evaluated. Kinetics of vulcanization, static mechanical properties, dynamical mechanical analysis, thermal shrinkage, and differential scanning calorimetry were utilized. The research demonstrates that the semi-crystalline BR improves mechanical properties but induces greater shrinkage at low temperatures. Conversely, using amorphous BR provided more consistent mechanical properties across the Martian temperature range and reduced material shrink by 6.71% for samples with carbon black, by 8.36% for samples with silica, and by 11.63% for unfilled samples. The subject of this study was the complex structure of a wooden historic church, which consisted of several segments that differed in the material used, the structural system employed, and the degree of wear of the elements. Particularly examined were the multi-branched columns located at the junction of different segments. The main objective of the analyses was to determine the degree of bonding of the column branches and the effect of this bonding on the operation of the entire structure. To evaluate the degree of bonding of the column branches, it was proposed to use experimental modal analysis. Based on the results of the experiment, it was found that the column branches are connected, but their cooperation is limited. Several computational models of the analyzed structure were also created, differing, for example, in the degree of bonding of the column branches. The effect of bonding the column branches on the values of stresses in the nave columns and on the values of extreme wind-induced displacements was studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite a higher safety profile compared to vitamin K antagonists, rivaroxaban therapy is still connected with multiple adverse effects, such as a high risk of bleeding. Thus, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of rivaroxaban concentrations is suggested. An alternative to plasma samples can be dried blood spots (DBS), which minimize the cost of sample storage and transport. In this study, we developed a UPLC-MS/MS method for the analysis of rivaroxaban in DBS and plasma samples. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Zorbax Eclipse Plus C18 column (2.1 × 100 mm; 3.5 µm, Agilent Technologies Inc., Santa Clara, CA, USA) with a mobile phase consisting of water and acetonitrile, both containing 0.1% formic acid. The analytes were detected using a positive ionization mode by multiple reaction monitoring. We validated the method according to ICH guidelines. The precision and accuracy were satisfactory. Extraction recovery was approximately 57% and 66% for DBS and plasma samples, respectively. A high correlation between rivaroxaban concentrations in plasma and DBS samples collected from patients was confirmed with Deming regression. The suitability of both sampling techniques for the rivaroxaban TDM was also verified by Bland–Altman plots based on DBS-predicted and observed plasma concentrations. In addition, we found a significant relationship between rivaroxaban concentrations and coagulation parameters, including prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR). This paper describes the self-heating effects resulting from mechanical deformation in the additively manufactured aluminium alloy AlSi7Mg0.6. The material's self-heating effect results from irreversible changes in the material's microstructure that are directly coupled with the inelastic deformations. These processes are highly dissipative, which is reflected in the heat generation of the material. To describe such effects, a numerical framework that combines an elasto-viscoplastic Chaboche model with the Gurson Tvergaard Needleman damage approach is analysed and thermomechanically extended. This paper characterises the sample preparation, the experimental set-up, the development of the thermomechanical approach, and the material model. A user material subroutine applies the complete material model for the finite element software Abaqus 2022. To validate the material model and the parameters, a complex tensile test is performed. In order to check the finite element model, the energy transformation ratio is included in the evaluation. The numerical analyses of the mechanical stress evolution and the self-heating behaviour demonstrate good agreement with the experimental test. In addition, the calculation shows the expected behaviour of the void volume fraction that rises from the initial value of 0.0373 % to a higher value under a complex mechanical load. Background: The purpose of the study was to determine whether the use of β-adrenoceptor antagonists (β-blockers) can affect metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) and its tissue inhibitor (TIMP-2) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on conservative treatment. Methods: The circulating MMP-2/TIMP-2 system, proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and the marker of oxidative stress—Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD)—were measured in 23 CKD patients treated with β-blockers [β-blockers (+)] and in 27 CKD patients not receiving the above medication [β-blockers (−)]. Results: The levels of MMP-2, TIMP-2, and IL-6 were significantly lower in the β-blockers (+) than in the β-blockers (−) group, whereas Cu/Zn SOD concentrations were not affected by β-blocker use. There was a strong, independent association between MMP-2 and TIMP-2 in both analyzed patient groups. In the β-blockers (+) group, MMP-2 levels were indirectly related to the signs of inflammation, whereas in the β-blockers (−) group, the alterations in the MMP-2/TIMP-2 system were associated with the oxidative stress marker and CKD etiology. Conclusions: This study is the first to suggest that the use of β-blockers was associated with the reduction in IL-6 and the MMP-2/TIMP-2 system in CKD, providing a pharmacological rationale for the use of β-blockers to reduce inflammation and abnormal vascular remodeling in CKD. Surface ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) measured at the rural station in Belsk (51.83° N, 20.79° E), Poland, over the period of 1995–2023, were examined for long-term variability of O3 and its relationship to changes in the air temperature and NOx. Negative and positive trends were found for the 95th and 5th percentile, respectively, in the O3 data. A weak positive correlation (statistically significant) of 0.33 was calculated between O3 and the temperature averaged from sunrise to sunset during the photoactive part of the year (April–September). Recently, O3 maxima have become less sensitive to temperature changes, reducing the incidence of photochemical smog. The ozone–climate penalty factor decreased from 4.4 µg/m3/°C in the 1995–2004 period to 3.9 µg/m3/°C in the 2015–2023 period. The relationship between Ox (O3 + NO2) and NOx concentrations averaged from sunrise to sunset determined the local and regional contribution to Ox variability. The seasonal local and regional contributions remained unchanged in the period of 1995–2023, stabilizing the average O3 level at Belsk. "NOx-limited" and "VOC-limited" photochemical regimes prevailed in the summer and autumn, respectively. For many winter and spring seasons between 1995 and 2023, the type of photochemical regime could not be accurately determined, making it difficult to build an effective O3 mitigation policy. This review discusses the potential of targeting the kynurenine pathway (KP) in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. The KP, responsible for the catabolism of the amino acid tryptophan (TRP), produces metabolites that regulate various physiological processes, including inflammation, cell cycle, and neurotransmission. These metabolites, although necessary to maintain immune balance, may accumulate excessively during inflammation, leading to systemic disorders. Key KP enzymes such as indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO1), indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 2 (IDO2), tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO), and kynurenine 3-monooxygenase (KMO) have been considered promising therapeutic targets. It was highlighted that both inhibition and activation of these enzymes may be beneficial, depending on the specific inflammatory disorder. Several inflammatory conditions, including autoimmune diseases, for which modulation of KP activity holds therapeutic promise, have been described in detail. Preclinical studies suggest that this modulation may be an effective treatment strategy for diseases for which treatment options are currently limited. Taken together, this review highlights the importance of further research on the clinical application of KP enzyme modulation in the development of new therapeutic strategies for inflammatory diseases. Flexible macromolecules easily become entangled with neighboring macromolecules. The resulting network determines many polymer properties, including rheological and mechanical properties. Therefore, a number of experimental and modeling studies were performed to describe the relationship between the degree of entanglement of macromolecules and polymer properties. The introduction presents general information about the entanglements of macromolecule chains, collected on the basis of studies of equilibrium entangled polymers. It is also shown how the density of entanglements can be reduced. The second chapter presents experiments and models leading to the description of the movement of a single macromolecule. The next part of the text discusses how the rheological properties change after partial disentangling of the polymer. Shaping safe and hygienic working conditions is the basic obligation of the employer. Employers are still looking for methods, tools, and solutions to improve work safety. The study reviews the literature on solutions aimed at improving occupational safety in construction. For this purpose, bibliometric analysis was used, consisting of the exploration and analysis of scientific studies in the field of occupational health and safety, including the possibility of using the LM tool to improve working conditions on construction sites. The study presents the possibility of implementing Lean Manufacturing (LM) tools in the construction industry. Their strengths and weaknesses were identified, and the benefits and possible barriers related to their effective implementation/use were identified. The result of the analyses was a summary of benefits for the construction industry (strengths and opportunities) as well as areas requiring improvement (weaknesses and hazards) regarding the LM tools used. Based on the conducted analyses, it was found that it is possible to use the tools of the LM concept to improve work safety and organize tasks performed on construction sites. The implementation of LM tools, such as 5S/6S, Poka-Yoke, and Standardization, enables risk reduction through a direct impact on the area being analyzed, in which occupational hazards have been identified. It is also noted that there is a need to simultaneously use LM tools (VM, Gemba-Walk, DHM) as solutions aimed at reducing risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Yolkin, an egg yolk immunoregulatory protein, stimulates the humoral but inhibits the cellular immune response in adult mice. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of yolkin administration on the immune response using a model of juvenile, i.e., 28-day- and 37-day-old, mice. We examined the yolkin influence on the magnitude of the cellular immune response, which was determined as contact sensitivity (CS) to oxazolone (OXA), and the humoral immune response, which was determined as the antibody response to ovalbumin (OVA). Yolkin was administered in drinking water, followed by immunization with OXA or OVA. In parallel, the phenotypic changes in the lymphoid organs were determined following yolkin treatment and prior immunization. The results showed that yolkin had a stimulatory effect on CS in the mice treated with yolkin from the 37th day of life but not from the 28th day of life. In contrast, no regulatory effect of yolkin on antibody production was found in 28-day- and 37-day-old mice. Phenotypic studies revealed significant changes in the content of B cells and T cell subpopulations, including CD4+CD25+Foxp3 regulatory T cells. The association between the effects of yolkin on the magnitude of CS and phenotypic changes in main T- and B-cell compartments, as well the importance of changes in T-regulatory and CD8+ cells in the age categories, are discussed. The influence of decreasing the entanglement density of macromolecules on the crystallization of the β-form of polypropylene was investigated. Polypropylene with seven times less entanglement was obtained from a solution in xylene, and its properties were compared with those of fully entangled polypropylene. To obtain a high β-phase content, the polymer was nucleated using calcium pimelate. In non-isothermal crystallization studies, accelerated growth of β-crystals was found, increasing the crystallization temperature. Also, the isothermal crystallization was fastest in the nucleated, partially disentangled polypropylene. Increased growth rate of spherulites and enhanced nucleation activity in the presence of more mobile macromolecules were responsible for the high rate of melt conversion to crystals in the disentangled polypropylene. It was also observed that the equilibrium melting temperature of β-crystals is lower after disentangling macromolecules. The character of atmospheric pollution and its impact on surface waters may vary substantially in space, and hence, we add a potentially important location for the studies of atmospheric air pollution to the map of the High Arctic. We have investigated the anthropogenic particle characteristics and selected persistent organic pollutant concentrations, in a priorly unmonitored location in the Arctic (Svalbard), exposed to a climatic gradient. Single-particle analysis of PM indicates that besides the prevailing natural aerosol particles, anthropogenic ones were present. The likely anthropogenic origin of some particles was established for spherical Fe-rich or aluminosilicate particles formed in high-temperature processes or metal-rich particles of the chemical composition corresponding to industrial products and atypical for natural minerals; soot, tar balls, and secondary sulfate were also likely of anthropogenic origin. Some of the observed anthropogenic particles could only come from remote industrial sources. POP concentrations indicated a background of LRAT, consistent with the ΣPCB concentrations and volatility profile. However, the ΣDDX composition indicating aged sources and an order of magnitude higher concentrations of both ΣDDXs and ΣHCHs than at other High Arctic monitoring stations indicate their potential source in two types of re-emission from secondary sources, i.e., from seawater and snowpack, respectively. Simple Summary: Despite the rapid development of medicine, the appropriate selection of anticancer drugs in breast cancer is still not optimized. To address personalized medicine, we propose a simple diagnostic and therapeutic pathway, called the ONCOBREAST-TEST, which aims to select drugs against which a patient's cancer cells, taken during a biopsy, show the greatest sensitivity. Our research showed that simple, inexpensive, and quick tests such as the assessment of cell viability, morphology, and lactate dehydrogenase activity are sufficient tools for selecting drugs with the highest anticancer efficacy. The conducted in vitro studies showed a high probability of accurate drug selection based on the proposed testing techniques. ONCOBREAST-TEST is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that is part of the comprehensive care of a patient with breast cancer.: Chemosensitivity of cancer cells was assessed using the MTT test, morphological assessment of cells, LDH activity in the culture medium, and flow cytometry technique (apoptosis, proliferation, CD24, CD44, GATA3, cytokeratin, Ki-67). Diagnostic tools included panels of simple tests which could be used to accurately predict the chemosensitivity of tumor cells previously isolated from a patient, even before actual chemotherapy. The proposed procedure allows for a simple (based on MTT results, cell morphology, LDH concentration), minimally invasive, quick, and accurate assessment of the sensitivity of breast cancer cells to the drugs used and, to select the most effective treatment plan as part of personalized therapy. In a patient with NOS G3, the most promising therapy will be docetaxel with cyclophosphamide and in the case of a patient with NOS G1, paclitaxel alone and in combination with trastuzumab. The implementation of such a procedure would undoubtedly increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy, reduce side effects by excluding drugs that are ineffective before using them, protect the patient's health, and shorten the treatment time, bringing economic and social benefits. Coordination compounds, like iron(II) triazole complexes, exhibit spin crossover (SCO) behavior at around room temperature. Therefore, they are interesting for a variety of possible applications, and it is convenient to integrate them into polymers. Due to a reduction of the iron content and thus also 57Fe content in the sample through integration in polymers, Mössbauer measurements are only possible with greater difficulty or very long measurement times without expensive enrichment of the samples with 57Fe. So, other ways of improving the Mössbauer signal for these composite materials are necessary. Therefore, we pressed these composite materials to improve the Mössbauer spectra. In this study, we synthesized an iron(II) triazole spin crossover complex and an electrospun polymer complex composite nanofiber material including the same complex. For both products, Mössbauer measurements were performed at room temperature before and after using a press to show that the complex composite is not harmed through pressing. We investigate the influence of the pressing impact on the Mössbauer measurements in the context of measurement statistics and the measured signals. We show that pressing is not connected to any changes in the sample regarding the spin and oxidation state. Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is a rare cause of asymmetrical mandibular overgrowth because of the presence of an atypical growth in the affected condyle. SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography) can easily establish the presence of an atypical, prolonged growth exceeding far beyond normal condylar growth and activity. A CT, CBCT, or LDCT (computed tomography, cone-beam computed tomography, or low-dose computed tomography) can confirm the diagnosis by evaluating the scope of bone overgrowth, mandibular basis/ramus asymmetry, tendency to condylar head enlargement, changes in bone density, and occurrence of differences in condylar head shapes, size, and bone structure. In most cases, a condylectomy is the procedure of choice in growing cases of UCH to remove the pathological condyle and reduce asymmetry levels. Sometimes, the growth is very slow and progressive over time, causing slowly growing asymmetry with similar symptoms to any other mandibular asymmetry, and this causes some troublesome procedures in UCH diagnostics, resulting in patients being underdiagnosed; it can even lead to some relapses in mandibular asymmetry and skeletal malocclusion after previously performed orthodontic and surgical treatment of such discrepancies. When the source of asymmetry is not identified in time, possible inadequate treatment protocols can be used. If any relapse of facial and mandibular asymmetry re-occur, SPECT and CT evaluation are necessary to evaluate if condylar hyperplasia is present and to establish what kind of surgical intervention should be used in each case. The article concerns the problem of capacitor diagnosis in a hybrid aircraft. Capacitors are one of the most commonly damaged components of electrical vehicle drive systems. The result of these failures is an increase in voltage ripple. Most known analytical methods are based on frequency spectrum analysis, which is time-consuming and computationally complex. The use of deep neural networks (DNNs) allows for the direct use of the measurement signal, which reduces the operating time of the overall diagnostic system. However, the problem with these networks is the long training process. Therefore, this article uses transfer learning (TL), which allows for the secondary use of previously learnt DNNs. To collect data to learn the network, a test bench with the ability to simulate a capacitor failure was constructed, and a model based on it was made in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. A convolutional neural network (CNN) structure was developed and trained by the TL method to estimate the capacitance of the capacitor based on signals from the Simulink-designed model. The proposed fault diagnostic method is characterised by a nearly 100% efficiency in determining capacitance, with an operating time of about 10 ms, regardless of load and supply voltage. Calcium channels, comprising voltage-dependent and ligand-gated types, are pivotal in neuronal function, with their dysregulation is implicated in various neurological disorders. This review delves into the significance of the CACNA genes, including CACNA1A, CACNA1B, CACNA1C, CACNA1D, CACNA1E, CACNA1G, and CACNA1H, in the pathogenesis of conditions such as migraine, epilepsy, cerebellar ataxia, dystonia, and cerebellar atrophy. Specifically, variants in CACNA1A have been linked to familial hemiplegic migraine and epileptic seizures, underscoring its importance in neurological disease etiology. Furthermore, different genetic variants of CACNA1B have been associated with migraine susceptibility, further highlighting the role of CACNA genes in migraine pathology. The complex relationship between CACNA gene variants and neurological phenotypes, including focal seizures and ataxia, presents a variety of clinical manifestations of impaired calcium channel function. Since methods for reducing macromolecule entanglements have been developed, it has become possible to better understand the impact of polymer chain entanglement on the crystallization process. The article presents basic information about the disentangling of macromolecules and the characterization of the degree of entanglement. The basic knowledge of polymer crystallization was also presented. Then, it was discussed how polymers crystallize during their disentangling. Non-isothermal and isothermal crystallization experiments using disentangled polymers, and for comparison using entangled polymers, are described in more detail. The influence of disentangling on both nucleation and crystal growth is highlighted. It is also shown how the crystallization of polymers changes when macromolecules re-entangle. Novelty detection, crucial to episodic memory formation, is impaired in epileptic patients with mesial temporal lobe resection. Mismatch novelty detection, that activates the hippocampal CA1 area in humans and is vital for memory reformulation and reconsolidation, is also impaired in patients with hippocampal lesions. In this work, we investigated the response to mismatch novelty, as occurs with the new location of known objects in a familiar environment, in the Li2+-pilocarpine rat model of TLE and its correlation with hippocampal monoaminergic markers. Animals showing spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRSs) for at least 4 weeks at the time of behavioural testing showed impaired spatial learning in the radial arm maze, as described. Concurrently, SRS rats displayed impaired exploratory responses to mismatch novelty, yet novel object recognition was not significantly affected in SRS rats. While the levels of serotonin and dopamine transporters were mildly decreased in hippocampal membranes from SRS rats, the levels on the norepinephrine transporter, tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine-β-hydroxylase were enhanced, hinting for an augmentation, rather than an impairment in noradrenergic function in SRS animals. Altogether, this reveals that mismatch novelty detection is particularly affected by hippocampal damage associated to the Li2+-pilocarpine model of epilepsy 4–8 weeks after the onset of SRSs and suggests that deficits in mismatch novelty detection may substantially contribute to cognitive impairment in MTLE. As such, behavioural tasks based on these aspects of mismatch novelty may prove useful in the development of cognitive therapy strategies aiming to rescue cognitive deficits observed in epilepsy. This work compared the multi-element analysis of human hair and nails using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS) with an easy, fast, cheap, non-destructive method using energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence (ED XRF). The ICP MS-based method was more sensitive (over 30 elements could be quantified) and costly (requiring more time, samples, and chemicals). The EDX-based method required laboratory and certified reference materials made of hair for instrument calibration. It was less sensitive (16 elements could be quantified: S, Si, Ca, Br, Fe, Cu, Cr, Mg, Si, K, Mn, Ni, Zn, Se, Sr, Pb), but it allowed us to replace troublesome grinding with the dissolution of keratin-based material with an alkalic agent (tetramethylammonium hydroxide, TMAH) and the formation of stable-for-days pellets. This method is simple, enables automation, and, due to the modification of wells in the autosampler of the EDX system via the immersion of home-designed inserts, it requires smaller amounts of biological material and binder (down to 70 mg instead of 500 mg required by commercially available instrument) to perform analysis. The studies of the rheology of digested pulp from agricultural biogas plants have often been fragmentary and non-standardised due to their complexity and time-consuming nature. As a result of measurements, it was possible to develop a procedure and range of measurements for the correct determination of the parameters of the carrier substance. The applicability of the coaxial cylinder measurement system was demonstrated for assessing the rheological parameters of digested pulp from a fermenter that utilises agricultural biomass. To determine the characteristics of solid particles, the Zingg diagram was used, inter alia, allowing the comparison of particles from each fraction. The analysis of the shape and size of solid particles may help to describe the onset of motion of this phase, flow type, or sedimentation type. The authors propose a completely new research approach to obtain an appropriate, repeatable test conditions of medium, which is the carrier liquid from the biogas plant reactor. The proposed methodology and the scenario of the entire study make it possible to achieve scalable and comparable test results in any laboratory. The proposed solution eliminates the influence of most external factors on the sample and rheological measurements, and the effectiveness of the presented procedure was confirmed in tests. Biofilm-related ocular infections can lead to vision loss and are difficult to treat with antibiotics due to challenges with application and increasing microbial resistance. In turn, the design and testing of new synthetic drugs is a time- and cost-consuming process. Therefore, in this work, for the first time, we assessed the in vitro efficacy of the plant-based abietic acid molecule, both alone and when introduced to a polymeric cellulose carrier, against biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans in standard laboratory settings as well as in a self-designed setting using the topologically challenging surface of the artificial eye. These analyses were performed using the standard microdilution method, the biofilm-oriented antiseptic test (BOAT), a modified disk-diffusion method, and eyeball models. Additionally, we assessed the cytotoxicity of abietic acid against eukaryotic cell lines and its anti-staphylococcal efficacy in an in vivo model using Galleria mellonella larvae. We found that abietic acid was more effective against Staphylococcus than Pseudomonas (from two to four times, depending on the test applied) and that it was generally more effective against the tested bacteria (up to four times) than against the fungus C. albicans at concentrations non-cytotoxic to the eukaryotic cell lines and to G. mellonella (256 and 512 µg/mL, respectively). In the in vivo infection model, abietic acid effectively prevented the spread of staphylococcus throughout the larvae organisms, decreasing their lethality by up to 50%. These initial results obtained indicate promising features of abietic acid, which may potentially be applied to treat ocular infections caused by pathogenic biofilms, with higher efficiency manifested against bacterial than fungal biofilms. The Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) is an emerging public health threat, with the number of reported cases in the US increasing in recent years. EEEV is a BSL3 pathogen, and the North American strain is a US Federal Select Agent (SA). These restrictions make experiments with EEEV difficult to perform, as high-tech equipment is often unavailable in BSL3 spaces and due to concerns about generating aerosols during manipulations. Therefore, a range of inactivation methods suitable for different downstream analysis methods are essential for advancing research on EEEV. We used heat, chemical, and ultraviolet (UV)-based methods for the inactivation of infected cells and supernatants infected with the non-select agent Madariaga virus (MADV). Although the MADV and EEEV strains are genetically distinct, differing by 8–11% at the amino acid level, they are expected to be similarly susceptible to various inactivation methods. We determined the following to be effective methods of inactivation: heat, TRIzol LS, 4% PFA, 10% formalin, and UV radiation for infected supernatants; TRIzol, 2.5% SDS with BME, 0.2% NP40, 4% PFA, and 10% formalin for infected cells. Total hip and knee replacements are the most common orthopedic procedures performed due to osteoarthritis. Pain is an intrinsic symptom accompanying osteoarthritis, persisting long before surgery, and continuing during the preoperative and postoperative periods. Appropriate pain management after surgery determines the comfort, duration, and cost of hospitalization, as well as the effectiveness of postoperative rehabilitation. Individual differences in pain perception and tolerance in orthopedic patients remain an important research topic. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of analgesic requirements (morphine, acetaminophen, and ketoprofen), including individual pain threshold and tolerance, body mass index (BMI), diabetes, and beliefs about pain control in patients undergoing elective hip or knee arthroplasty using a multilevel regression model (N = 147, 85 women, 62 men, 107 after hip replacement, and 40 after knee replacement). Results: Higher pain tolerance was associated with a lower dose of morphine per kg after surgery. Patients undergoing hip surgery received a lower dose of ketoprofen than patients undergoing knee surgery. The more the patient believed in personal pain control, the stronger the negative relationship between pain tolerance and morphine requirement. The lowest doses were given to patients with the highest pain tolerance and the greatest belief in personal control. Factors such as belief in pain control and pain tolerance should be considered in comprehensive postoperative pain management in orthopedic patients to reduce opioid doses and, thus, side effects. Global warming results in increasingly widespread wildfires, mostly in Siberia, but also in North America and Europe, which are responsible for the uncontrollable emission of pollutants, also to the High Arctic region. This study examines 11 samples of rainfall collected in August in a coastal area of southern Bellsund (Svalbard, Norway). It covers detailed analysis of major ions (i.e., Cl−, NO3−, and SO42−) and elements (i.e., Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) to Hybrid Single-Particle Langrarian Integrated Trajectory(HYSPLIT) backward air mass trajectories. The research of wildfires, volcanic activities, and dust storms in the Northern Hemisphere has permitted the assessment of their relations to the fluctuations and origins of elements. We distinguished at least 2 days (27 and 28 August) with evident influence of volcanic activity in the Aleutian and Kuril–Kamchatka trenches. Volcanic activity was also observed in the case of the Siberian wildfires, as confirmed by air mass trajectories. Based on the presence of non-sea K (nsK), non-sea sulphates (nss), and Ca (the soil factor of burned areas), the continuous influence of wildfires on rainfall chemistry was also found. Moreover, dust storms in Eurasia were mainly responsible for the transport of Zn, Pb, and Cd to Svalbard. Addressing the challenges associated with the highly exothermic nature of CO2 methanation, there is considerable interest in innovative catalyst designs on structural metallic supports. One promising solution in this regard involves thin films containing cobalt oxide within a carbon matrix, fabricated using the cold plasma deposition method (PECVD). The objective of this study was to search for a relationship between the molecular structure, nanostructure, and electronic structure of such films and their catalytic activity. The investigations employed various techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-VIS absorption, and catalytic tests in the CO2 methanation process. Three types of films were tested: untreated as-deposited (ad-CoO), thermally post-treated (TT-CoO), and argon plasma post-treated (PT-CoO) films. Among these, TT-CoO exhibited the most favorable catalytic properties, demonstrating a CO2 conversion rate of 83%, CH4 selectivity of 98% at 400 °C, and stability during the catalytic process. This superior performance was attributed to the formation of nanoscale heterojunctions in the TT-CoO film, where p-type CoO nanocrystallites interacted with the n-type carbon matrix. This work provides compelling evidence highlighting the key role of nanoscale heterojunctions in shaping the properties of nanocatalysts in thermal catalysis. Simple Summary: The discovery of the involvement of the kynurenine pathway in carcinogenesis has prompted significant changes in pharmacotherapy strategies. One such approach involves the simultaneous targeting of an ongoing process in cancer cells and inhibiting the abovementioned pathway. Based on this approach, we investigated the anticancer effect of combining a 1,2,4-triazine derivative, MM-129, together with an inhibitor of the kynurenine pathway, indoximod, in a colon cancer model. The obtained results support the efficacy of this strategy, providing a basis for future in-depth analyses. (1) Background: The purpose of the given study was to examine the antitumor activity of the simultaneous administration of MM-129, a 1,2,4-triazine derivative, and indoximod (IND), the kynurenine pathway inhibitor, toward colon cancer. (2) Methods: The efficiency of the co-administration of the studied compounds was assessed in xenografted zebrafish embryos. Then, the effects of the combined administration of compounds on cellular processes such as cell viability, apoptosis, and intracellular signaling pathways were evaluated. In vitro studies were performed using two colorectal cancer cell lines, namely, DLD-1 and HT-29. (3) Results: The results indicated that the simultaneous application of MM-129 and indoximod induced a stronger inhibition of tumor growth in zebrafish xenografts. The combination of these compounds intensified the process of apoptosis by lowering the mitochondrial potential, enhancing the externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS) and activation of caspases. Additionally, the expression of protein kinase B (AKT) and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-(1IDO1) was disrupted under the applied compound combination. (4) Conclusions: Simultaneous targeting of ongoing cell signaling that promotes tumor progression, along with inhibition of the kynurenine pathway enzyme IDO1, results in the enhancement of the antitumor effect of the tested compounds against the colon cancer cells. The following study analyzed the impact of fertilizing barley with fly ash from biomass combustion grown on two types of soil, Haplic Luvisol (HL) and Gleyic Chernozem (GC), on the properties of starch. The experiment was conducted in 2019 (A) and 2020 (B), and barley was fertilized with ash doses (D1–D6) differing in mineral content. In the tested barley starch samples, the amylose content, the clarity of the paste, and the content of selected minerals were determined. The thermodynamic characteristics of gelatinization and retrogradation were determined using the DSC method. Pasting characteristics, flow curves, and viscoelastic properties of starch pastes were performed. Starches differed in amylose content and paste clarity. The highest gelatinization and retrogradation enthalpy (ΔHG and ΔHR) values were recorded for samples GCD1A and HLD5B. None of the tested factors significantly affected the pasting temperature (PT), but they had a significant impact on the remaining parameters of the pasting characteristics. The average PT value of barley starches was 90.9 °C. However, GCD2A starch had the highest maximum viscosity and the highest rheological stability during heating. GCD2A paste was characterized by the highest apparent viscosity. It was shown that all pastes showed non-Newtonian flow and shear-thinning and had a predominance of elastic features over viscous ones. The resulting gels had the characteristics of weak gels. Ash from burning wood biomass is an innovative alternative to mineral fertilizers. It was shown that the use of such soil fertilization influenced the properties of barley starch. Fertilisation with ash from biomass combustion has a positive effect on the quality of nutrients in agrifood raw materials, improving their chemical composition and bioavailability. In the experiments carried out, the protein content and the profile of free amino acids in barley flour were examined from cultivation fertilised with biomass ash at various doses. Barley flour from Haplic Luvisol soil was characterised by a significantly higher (by 13.8% on average) total protein content compared to flour obtained from grains from Gleyic Chernozem soil. The highest protein content but a low content of free amino acids were found in the grains of plants fertilised with the mineral NPK (D1). An increase in the total pool of free amino acids in flour was observed, especially in the case of Haplic Luvisol soil. On average, after fertilising, significantly more ASP, ASN, GLU, GLY, ALA, and CYS were obtained in variant D4 (1.5 t·ha−1), and there were also significantly more TAU and GABA than in the control, up by 30.2% and 23%, respectively. A beneficial effect of fertilisation on the essential amino acid content in barley flour was found, but only up to the dose of D4, when it was significantly higher than in the control and under mineral fertilising (D1), up by 23.7% and 9.2%, respectively. High ash doses reduced the content of free amino acids in the tested barley flour. This study confirmed that using an alternative method of fertilising with plant biomass ash has a beneficial effect on protein quality and nutritional value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil salinity stress is a serious problem in plant cultivation. The effect of this stress is to disrupt the photosynthetic process, which can cause growth restrictions and a decrease in plant productivity. The use of biostimulants can be one of the stress mitigation strategies in plant cultivation. Biostimulants increase the tolerance of plants to abiotic stresses, thus mitigating their adverse effects. In the present study, based on a pot experiment, the effect of foliar application of biostimulants differentiated in terms of chemical composition (Bombardino (B1), Quantis® (B2), Biofol Plex (B3) and Megafol (B4)) on the physiological properties of Chinese silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis (Anderss.)) plants growing under salt stress conditions was determined. Salt stress was induced by soil application of NaCl at concentrations of 200 and 400 mM. The application of salt solutions was followed by spraying Miscanthus plants with biostimulants using a hand-held sprayer. Physiological investigations (chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange) have been carried out twice: on the 1st (Term I) and 7th (Term II) day after spraying with biostimulants. It was shown that salt stress causes a decrease in the values of most of the physiological indicators tested (except Ci). On both measurement dates, the application of biostimulants, especially B2, caused an improvement in the values of the physiological indices studied, both for plants growing under optimal conditions and under salt stress. Term II showed an upward trend in most of the analyzed parameters compared to Term I, indicating plant acclimatization to stress conditions. Conducted studies have shown that using biostimulants contributes to the alleviation of the effects of soil salinity stress. This paper presents the concept of using electric vehicles (EVs) as a countermeasure to deal with the negative effects of power rationing when electricity demands become difficult to meet due to unfavorable electrical system operating conditions. At present, an energy storage is widely used to maintain the stability of electricity supply in facilities whose main source of energy is renewable energy sources (RESs). However, we must not forget that electric vehicles are also electricity storage facilities, but they are not always available due to their mobility. With properly developed strategies, they can be used in electricity management processes, for example, by reducing their consumption during charging using smart charging technology, or by providing electricity from their batteries using vehicle-to-building (V2B) technology. Thus, this article presents a research methodology that treats electric vehicles as a remedy for eliminating power constraints. It consists of five main steps, including two algorithms for deciding how to deploy EVs during power rationing periods. An efficiency factor for eliminating these constraints was also introduced. The results showed that the use of smart charging or V2B technology in EVs can reduce the number of potential hours in which certain power levels are exceeded by up to several tens of percent. This means that in the future, with the significant development of electromobility, such a way of dealing with power constraints could be an alternative to conventional solutions like diesel generators. Yolkin is a polypeptide complex isolated from hen egg yolk that exhibits immunomodulating properties. The aim of the present study was to determine whether in-ovo-delivered yolkin affects leukocyte populations and cytokine levels in broiler chickens. The experiment was carried out on eggs from Ross 308 broiler breeder birds. Yolkin was administered in ovo on the 18th day of incubation, once, at the following three doses: 1, 10, or 100 µg/egg. The immunological parameters were assessed in 1-, 7-, 14-, 21-, 28-, 35-, and 42-day-old birds kept under farming conditions and routinely vaccinated. The leukocyte populations were determined in the thymus, spleen, and blood. The cytokine (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-10) levels were determined in the plasma of the broiler chickens. Each experimental group included eight birds. The most pronounced effect of yolkin was an increase in the population of T cells, both CD4+ and CD8+, mainly in the blood. This effect on the lymphocyte subsets may be valuable regarding chicken immune responses, mainly against T-dependent antigens, during infection or after vaccination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study we investigate the electrical properties in the transparent conductive polymer poly(3,4-ethylendioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and Cu-doped polymer (PEDOT:PSS 1.3% + CuCl2) using Hall measurements under the Van der Pauw configuration. The influence of doping on the electrical conductivity, Hall mobility, and carrier concentration is demonstrated in Cu-PEDOT:PSS and compared with pure PEDOT:PSS. Through this, we figured out there are difficulties in preparing Cu-doped (PEDOT:PSS 1.3% + CuCl2) polymeric thin films. The sheet resistance was measured to determine the electrical conductivity, aided by knowledge of the thin film thickness. Temperature dependency was evaluated using a closed cycle cryostat, covering temperatures ranging from 8K to 300 K. These comprehensive measurements provide valuable insights into the electrical behavior and temperature characteristics of PEDOT:PSS and PEDOT:PSS 1.3% + CuCl2, facilitating the development of high-performance organic electronic devices. Macromolecule entanglements are common in polymers. The first part of this review describes their influence on the properties of entangled polymers. Then, methods for reducing the entanglement density of macromolecule chains are discussed. It has been shown that research on partially disentangled polymers has provided a lot of new information about the relationship between the entangled state and properties of polymers. This research concerns, among others, mechanical and thermal properties and the crystallization process. A special disentangled polymer case, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, is also discussed. The results of research on polymer composites in which macromolecules were disentangled via processing and composites were produced using already disentangled polymers are presented in particular detail. It has been indicated that such composites and blends of disentangled polymers are promising and will probably be intensively researched in the near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The transfer matrix approach is used to study the optical characteristics of thermal radiation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) with metamaterial. In this method, every layer within the multilayer structure is associated with its specific transfer matrix. Subsequently, it links the incident beam to the next layer from the previous layer. The proposed structure is composed of three types of materials, namely InSb, ZrO2, and Teflon, and one type of epsilon-negative (ENG) metamaterial and is organized in accordance with the laws of sequencing. The semiconductor InSb has the capability to adjust bandgaps by utilizing its thermally responsive permittivity, allowing for tunability with temperature changes, while the metamaterial modifies the bandgaps according to its negative permittivity. Using quasi-periodic shows that, in contrast to employing absolute periodic arrangements, it produces more diverse results in modifying the structure's band-gaps. Using a new sequence arrangement mixed-quasi-periodic (MQP) structure, which is a combination of two quasi periodic structures, provides more freedom of action for modifying the properties of the medium than periodic arrangements do. The ability to control thermal radiation is crucial in a range of optical applications since it is frequently unpolarized and incoherent in both space and time. These configurations allow for the suppression and emission of thermal radiation in a certain frequency range due to their fundamental nature as photonic band-gaps (PBGs). So, we are able to control the thermal radiation by changing the structure arrangement. Here, the We use an indirect method based on the second Kirchoff law for thermal radiation to investigate the emittance of black bodies based on a well-known transfer matrix technique. We can measure the transmission and reflection coefficients with associated transmittance and reflectance, T and R, respectively. Here, the effects of several parameters, including the input beam's angle, polarization, and period on tailoring the thermal radiation spectrum of the proposed structure, are studied. The results show that in some frequency bands, thermal radiation exceeded the black body limit. There were also good results in terms of complete stop bands for both TE and TM polarization at different incident angles and frequencies. This study produces encouraging results for the creation of Terahertz (THz) filters and selective thermal emitters. The tunability of our media is a crucial factor that influences the efficiency and function of our desired photonic outcome. Therefore, exploiting MQP sequences or arrangements is a promising strategy, as it allows us to rearrange our media more flexibly than quasi-periodic sequences and thus achieve our optimal result. Featured Application: In response to the growing consumer demand for dairy-free and vegan products, the presented study demonstrates the potential for producing innovative fermented plant-based beverages with the addition of fruit extracts and lyophilisates. The application of highly biologically active plant compounds as well as the fermentation of oat-based beverages indicate a new direction in the functional food design process. This approach influences the antioxidant activity, sensory, and health-promoting value of the final product. Nowadays, plant-based fermented products are attracting a lot of consumer interest due to their probiotic and health-promoting properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microbiological quality and antioxidant activity of innovative fermented oat beverages with the addition of extracts and freeze-dried local fruit. In the first step, chokeberry and hawthorn were selected based on their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The final study material consisted of oat beverages fermented with the use of the Lactiplantibacillus plantarum DKK 003 strain for 20 h with the addition of 1 and 5% of extracts and freeze-dried fruits. It was found that freeze-dried chokeberry and chokeberry extracts showed a higher content of polyphenolic compounds than freeze-dried hawthorn and hawthorn extracts. After the fermentation process of the innovative beverages, the content of polyphenolic compounds remained the same or there was a slight decrease depending on the additive type. Antioxidant activity significantly decreased after 20 h of fermentation in all enriched oat beverages with no significant differences observed compared to control samples. The obtained fermented beverages were characterised by a high lactic acid bacteria count (above 8 log CFU/mL), a low pH (approximately 4.15), and no microbiological contamination. This single center study includes a comparative analysis of the diagnostic performance of full-field digital mammography (FFDM), contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) and automatic breast ultrasound (ABUS) in the group of patients with breast American College of Radiology (ACR) categories C and D as well as A and B with FFDM. The study involved 297 patients who underwent ABUS and FFDM. Breast types C and D were determined in 40% of patients with FFDM and low- energy CEM. CEM was performed on 76 patients. Focal lesions were found in 131 patients, of which 115 were histopathologically verified. The number of lesions detected in patients with multiple lesions were 40 from 48 with ABUS, 13 with FFDM and 21 with CEM. Compliance in determining the number of foci was 82% for FFDM and 91% for both CEM and ABUS. In breast types C and D, 72% of all lesions were found with ABUS, 56% with CEM and 29% with FFDM (p = 0.008, p = 0.000); all invasive cancers were diagnosed with ABUS, 83% with CEM and 59% with FFDM (p = 0.000, p = 0.023); 100% DCIS were diagnosed with ABUS, 93% with CEM and 59% with FFDM. The size of lesions from histopathology in breast ACR categories A and B was 14–26 mm, while in breast categories C and D was 11–37 mm. In breast categories C and D, sensitivity of ABUS, FFDM and CEM was, respectively, 78.05, 85.37, 92.68; specificity: 40, 13.33, 8.33; PPV (positive predictive value): 78.05, 72.92, 77.55; NPV (negative predictive value): 40, 25, 25, accuracy: 67.86, 66.07, 73.58. In breast categories A and B, sensitivity of ABUS, FFDM and CEM was, respectively, 81.25, 93.75, 93.48; specificity: 18.18, 18.18, 16.67; PPV: 81.25, 83.33, 89.58; NPV: 18.18, 40, 25; accuracy: 69.49, 79.66, 84.62. The sensitivity of the combination of FFDM and ABUS was 100 for all types of breast categories; the accuracy was 75 in breast types C and D and 81.36 in breast types A and B. The study confirms the predominance of C and D breast anatomy types and the low diagnostic performance of FFDM within that group and indicates ABUS and CEM as potential additive methods in breast cancer diagnostics. Sarcosine (N-methylglycine), a glutamatergic modulator, reduces the primary negative symptoms of schizophrenia. These beneficial changes might be mediated by trophic factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF). We assessed associations between initial serum EGF levels or changes in serum EGF levels and symptom severity during the addition of sarcosine to stable antipsychotic treatment and thereby evaluated the associations between glutamatergic modulation, clinical changes and peripheral EGF concentrations. Fifty-eight subjects with a diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia with dominant negative symptoms, stably treated with antipsychotics, completed a prospective 6-month, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Subjects received orally 2 g of sarcosine (n = 28) or placebo (n = 30) daily. Serum EGF levels and symptom severity (using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS)) were assessed at baseline, 6-week and 6-month follow-up. Augmentation antipsychotic treatment with sarcosine had no effect on EGF serum levels at any time points. Only the sarcosine group showed a significant improvement in negative symptoms, general psychopathology subscales and the overall PANSS score. We found a reduction in serum EGF levels in the placebo group, but levels in the sarcosine remained stable during the study. Our data indicate that improvement in negative symptoms due to sarcosine augmentation is not directly mediated by EGF, but effective treatment may induce the production or block the decrease in EGF concentrations, which indicates the neuroprotective effect of treatment and confirms the relationship between neuroprotection and EGF levels. Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a growing social, economic, and health problem. MS coexists with nearly half of all patients with affective disorders. This study aimed to evaluate the neurobiological parameters (clinical, anthropometric, biochemical, adipokines levels, and ultrasound of carotid arteries) and their relationship with the development of MS in patients with bipolar disorder. The study group consisted of 70 patients (50 women and 20 men) hospitalized due to episodes of depression in the course of bipolar disorders. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale was used to assess the severity of the depression symptoms in an acute state of illness and after six weeks of treatment. The serum concentration of adipokines was determined using an ELISA method. The main finding of this study is that the following adipokines correlated with MS in the bipolar depression women group: visfatin, S100B, and leptin had a positive correlation, whereas adiponectin, leptin-receptor, and adiponectin/leptin ratio showed a negative correlation. Moreover, the adiponectin/leptin ratio showed moderate to strong negative correlation with insulin level, BMI, waist circumference, triglyceride level, treatment with metformin, and a positive moderate correlation with HDL. The adiponectin/leptin ratio may be an effective tool to assess MS in depressed female bipolar patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Russian–Ukrainian conflict has led to the disruption of global supply chains, thus posing a threat to food security. The study aimed to assess the short-term impact of the conflict on food supply and global retail food prices resulting from the disruption of agri-food exports from Ukraine after the war outbreak. To assess the impact of the conflict on retail prices worldwide, the actual food price level during the conflict period was compared with the counterfactual values obtained from the forecasting models. The research points to a significant decline in Ukraine's commodity exports at the beginning of the conflict leading to a supply gap for cereals in particular, affecting global access to staple foods. As a result, global food commodity prices rose sharply, however, the upsurge was short-lived, and as early as July 2022 price indices returned to their pre-war levels. On the other hand, in most regions worldwide the gradual and persistent increase in retail food prices was observed after the war outbreak. The study also found strong regional differentiation in the response of retail food prices to the conflict due to various specific factors that exacerbated or mitigated the impact of the war. To support the conservation efforts regarding a wooden church in Domachowo, extensive research and design work was required to strengthen its weakened structure. A variety of data and analyses are necessary to make an accurate assessment, including obtaining a dimensional model, monitoring the behavior of the structure and its response to external forces, and also performing strength analyses and verifying them with measurement data. For accurate geometric evaluation, static and dynamic measurements were required. A mathematical model and a flowchart of the necessary tasks were developed, along with the selection and installation of measuring devices. For this particular structure, static measurements were made using an automatic total station, and dynamic measurements using tilt sensors. The purpose of the analysis was to correlate the inertia measurements with the absolute tachymetric observations related to reference points fixed outside the object in order to accurately assess the behavior of the object. Another important issue was to model the column element under study in such a way that its horizontal displacements could be determined from the measured inclinations. The obtained results indicated the need to strengthen the joints of the two main parts of the structure in order to minimize the impact of dynamic weather conditions. The paper describes the measurement process, the method of calculating displacements, and the correlation of both types of data. Selected results confirming the conclusions are also presented. Psoriasis is a complex disease that nowadays is considered not only a dermatosis but a kind of systemic disorder associated with many accompanying diseases. Metabolic complications leading to cardiovascular incidences are the cause of increased mortality in psoriatic patients. Galectins (gal) are beta-galactoside-binding lectins that exert different functions, including engagement in metabolic processes. Our aim was to assess the concentrations of gal-1, 2 and 12 in psoriatics, to establish their potential clinical implications, including in metabolic complications. Plasma galectins were assessed by ELISA in 60 psoriatic patients and 30 controls without dermatoses and a negative family history of psoriasis. Plasma concentrations of all galectins were significantly higher in patients than controls (gal-1 with p < 0.001, gal-2 and 12 with p < 0.05). There were no correlations between galectins concentrations and psoriasis severity in PASI or disease duration (p > 0.05). Gal-1 and 12 were significantly negatively correlated with GFR (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, respectively) and gal-2 with HDL (p < 0.05). Gal-2 was significantly positively correlated with CRP (p < 0.05) and gal-12 with fasting glucose (p < 0.01). Based on the results and given the reported role of galectins in metabolic disorders we may conclude that gal-1, 2 and 12 could be potentially engaged in metabolic complications in psoriatics, most probably in atherosclerosis. Gal-2 could be perhaps further investigated as a marker of metabolically induced inflammation in psoriasis, gal-1 and gal-12 as predictors of renal impairment in psoriatics due to metabolic disorders.
