This study investigates the effects of laser deposition and laser rescanning (LR) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-manganese steel (HMnS) deposited by laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED) comprising 24 wt.% Mn. Four types of laser deposition and LR strategies were investigated: unidirectional L-DED scanning without laser rescanning, L-DED scanning with 90° alterations in the laser scanning path on each layer without laser rescanning, unidirectional L-DED with laser rescanning in the same direction, and L-DED with laser rescanning with 90° alterations in the laser scanning path. The L-DED-processed HMnS had only a few small pores and exhibited a microstructure without any serious defects such as cracks. Additionally, a strong fibrous texture along the <101>/building direction of the fully austenite phase was found. The mechanical properties (microhardness and tensile strength) of HMnS were improved by the LR with a grain refinement effect and fine solidification cell size due to the significantly faster solidification rate in LR than that in L-DED. In this study, the tendency of having different grain structures depending on the impurity levels in AZ91 alloys was investigated. Two types of AZ91 alloys were analyzed: commercial-purity AZ91 and high-purity AZ91. The average grain size of the commercial-purity AZ91 alloy and high-purity AZ91 is 320 µm and 90 µm, respectively. Thermal analysis revealed negligible undercooling in the high-purity AZ91 alloy, while undercooling of 1.3 °C was observed in the commercial-purity AZ91 alloy. A CS analyzer was employed to precisely analyze the carbon composition of both alloys. The carbon content of the high-purity AZ91 alloy was found to be 197 ppm, while the commercial-purity AZ91 alloy contained 104 ppm, indicating a difference of approximately 2 times. The higher carbon content in the high-purity AZ91 alloy is believed to be due to the use of high-purity pure Mg in its production (the carbon content of high-purity pure Mg is 251 ppm). To simulate the vacuum distillation process commonly used in the production of high-purity Mg ingots, experiments were conducted to investigate the reaction of carbon with oxygen to produce CO and CO2. XPS analysis and simulation results for activities confirmed the formation of CO and CO2 during the vacuum distillation process. It could be speculated that the carbon sources in the high-purity Mg ingot provide Al-C particles, which act as nucleants for Mg grains in the high-purity AZ91 alloy. In this study, aluminum (Al) chip matrix-based synthetic foams were fabricated by hot pressing at a semi-solid (SS) temperature. The densities of the foams ranged from 2.3 to 2.63 g/cm3, confirming that the density decreased with increasing glass hollow sphere (GHS) content. These values were approximately 16% lower than the densities of Al chip alloys without GHS. The Al chip syntactic foam microstructure fabricated by the semi-solid process comprised GHS uniformly distributed around the Al chip matrix and a spherical microstructure surrounded by the Mg2Si phase in the interior. The resulting spherical microstructure contributed significantly to the improvement of mechanical properties. Mechanical characterization confirmed that the Al chip syntactic foam exhibited a compressive strength of approximately 225–288 MPa and an energy absorption capacity of 46–47 MJ/M3. These results indicate higher compressive properties than typical Al syntactic foam. The Al chip microstructure, consisting of the Mg2Si phase and GHS, acted as a load-bearing element during compression, significantly contributing to the compressive properties of the foam. An analysis was performed using an energy-dispersive spectrometer to validate the interfacial reaction between the GHS and the matrix. The results showed that MgAl2O4 was uniformly coated around GHS, which contributed not only to the strength of the matrix, but also to the mechanical properties via the appropriate interfacial reactive coating. Hexane is a safe, efficient, and cost-effective alternative to other commercial hydrocarbons for gaseous carburization; however, commercial hexane is not sufficiently pure. Titanium powder can remove oxygen-containing impurities from commercial hexane; however, research on the use of titanium powder remains limited. We investigated the purification of hexane using titanium, copper, and aluminum powders and used the purified hexane for the gaseous carburization of tantalum. Ti exhibited lower activation energy for oxidation (1.55 kJ/mol) than Cu (91.09 kJ/mol) and Al (150.25 kJ/mol) and a significantly higher oxidation rate (0.0269 g/h) in hexane at room temperature than Cu (0.0018 g/h) and Al (0.0001 g/h). The carbon content in tantalum carburized using the purified hexane was comparable to that carburized using unpurified hexane (approximately 6.22%); however, its oxygen content was significantly lower (1.39%), which indicates that the produced tantalum carbide has a higher purity. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the oxidation products of tantalum, such as Ta2O, TaO2, Ta0.8O2, and Ta2O5, were absent in the sample carburized using the purified hexane. Therefore, Ti powder can effectively remove oxygen-containing impurities from commercial hexane and facilitate its use as an effective carburizing medium for the synthesis of high-purity tantalum carbide. Grain refinement of magnesium (Mg) alloys has been a major research topic over the past decades as one of the effective approaches to increase their strength and ductility simultaneously. In this study, a brief review of the grain refinement of aluminum-bearing Mg alloys is included to provide an in-depth understanding of the detailed mechanisms of grain refinement of Mg alloys. Additionally, the effect of melt superheating on the grain refining of Mg–Al-based alloys has been investigated. It was confirmed that melt superheating caused a significant grain refining effect in the commercial purity (CP) of AZ91 alloy (0.25% Mn). Undercooling of 1.3 °C was observed before superheating and was noticeably reduced after the superheating process. A vacuum filtering experiment was conducted, which involves filtering the melts using fine metal porous filters to separate the particles in the melts. It was observed that a large amount of Al8Mn5 particles were generated in the commercial purity AZ91 alloy by the superheating process. However, because of the poor crystallographic matching between Al8Mn5 and Mg, Al8Mn5 was not considered the nucleation site for Mg grains. A master alloy containing ε-AlMn particles, which are in good crystallographic matching with Mg, was added, and it was found that the grain size of the commercial-grade AZ91 alloy was reduced. Therefore, it is suggested that Al8Mn5 particles, existing as a solid phase in the molten metal of the commercial AZ91 alloy could be transformed into ε-AlMn particles by the superheating process, and these particles can be effective nucleation sites for Mg grains. The transformation of Al8Mn5 into ε-AlMn is considered the main mechanism of grain refinement of the commercial purity of AZ91 alloy by superheating. Notably, the effect of grain refinement by superheating was not observed in the high-purity (HP) AZ91 alloy (0.006% Mn) because Al–Mn particles were likely not formed due to a very small quantity of manganese. Coronavirus, an important zoonotic disease, raises concerns of future pandemics. The bat is considered a source of noticeable viruses resulting in human and livestock infections, especially the coronavirus. Therefore, surveillance and genetic analysis of coronaviruses in bats are essential in order to prevent the risk of future diseases. In this study, the genome of HCQD-2020, a novel alphacoronavirus detected in a bat (Eptesicus serotinus), was assembled and described using next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics analysis. The comparison of the whole-genome sequence and the conserved amino acid sequence of replicated proteins revealed that the new strain was distantly related with other known species in the Alphacoronavirus genus. Phylogenetic construction indicated that this strain formed a separated branch with other species, suggesting a new species of Alphacoronavirus. Additionally, in silico prediction also revealed the risk of cross-species infection of this strain, especially in the order Artiodactyla. Delivery of substances into the inner ear via local routes is increasingly being used in clinical treatment. Studies have focused on methods to increase permeability through the round window membrane (RWM) and enhance drug diffusion into the inner ear. However, the clinical applications of those methods have been unclear and few studies have investigated the efficacy of methods in an inner ear injury model. Here, we employed the medium chain fatty acid caprate, a biologically safe, clinically applicable substance, to modulate tight junctions of the RWM. Intratympanic treatment of sodium caprate (SC) induced transient, but wider, gaps in intercellular spaces of the RWM epithelial layer and enhanced the perilymph and cochlear concentrations/uptake of dexamethasone. Importantly, dexamethasone co–administered with SC led to significantly more rapid recovery from noise-induced hearing loss at 4 and 8 kHz, compared with the dexamethasone-only group. Taken together, our data indicate that junctional modulation of the RWM by SC enhances dexamethasone uptake into the inner ear, thereby hastening the recovery of hearing sensitivity after noise trauma. This study reports the microstructural changes and mechanical properties of high-strength aluminum alloy chips prepared in the semi-solid state at different temperatures, pressures, and holding times. In semi-solid processes, these processing parameters must be optimized because they affect the microstructure and mechanical properties of the chips. In microstructural analysis, these parameters clearly influenced the spheroidization of the aluminum matrix. The aluminum matrix was uniformly spheroidized after semi-solid processing, and the densities of the final samples increased with the holding time. After 30 min holding time at a given temperature, the density approached the theoretical density, but the compressive strength of the samples seriously deteriorated. Meanwhile, fracture surface investigation revealed a deformed Mg2Si phase, which is formed through a eutectic reaction. The strength of this phase significantly decreased after increasing the holding time of the semi-solid processing from 10 to 30 min. Therefore, deformation of the Mg2Si phase caused by diffusion of aluminum into this phase can be a key factor for the decrease in the mechanical properties of samples fabricated with 30 min holding time. Although previous studies continuously report an increased risk of hearing loss in diabetes patients, the impact of the disease on the inner ear remains unexplored. Herein, we examine the pathophysiology of diabetes-associated hearing impairment and cochlear synaptopathy in a mouse model of diabetes. Male B6.BKS(D)-Leprdb/J (db/db, diabetes) and heterozygote (db/+, control) mice were assigned into each experimental group (control vs. diabetes) based on the genotype and tested for hearing sensitivity every week from 6 weeks of age. Each cochlea was collected for histological and biological assays at 14 weeks of age. The diabetic mice exerted impaired hearing and a reduction in cochlear blood flow and C-terminal-binding protein 2 (CtBP2, a presynaptic ribbon marker) expression. Ultrastructural images revealed severely damaged mitochondria from diabetic cochlea accompanied by a reduction in Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 4 (COX4) and CR6-interacting factor 1 (CRIF1). The diabetic mice presented significantly decreased levels of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule (PECAM-1), B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2), and procaspase-9, but not procaspase-8. Importantly, significant changes were not found in necroptotic programmed cell death markers (receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 1, RIPK1; RIPK3; and mixed lineage kinase domain-like pseudokinase, MLKL) between the groups. Taken together, diabetic hearing loss is accompanied by synaptopathy, microangiopathy, damage to the mitochondrial structure/function, and activation of the intrinsic apoptosis pathway. Our results imply that mitochondrial dysfunction is deeply involved in diabetic hearing loss, and further suggests the potential benefits of therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondria. The emergence of extended-spectrum cephalosporin (ESC)-resistant Gram-negative bacteria is of great concern in both human and veterinary medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate ESC-resistant bacterial isolates from companion animals in South Korea between 2017 and 2019. Isolates with ESC resistance genes, which were identified by PCR, were assessed for genetic relatedness by multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). In total, 91 ESC-resistant Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., Serratia spp., and Enterobacter cloacae isolates harbored the blaTEM gene. Among other ESC resistance genes, blaCTX-M-15, blaCIT, and blaCTX-M-55 were predominantly detected in E. coli isolates, whereas blaSHV and blaDHA were more frequently detected in Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. In addition, all blaEBC-positive isolates were classified as E. cloacae. From the MLST results, blaCTX-M-9-carrying ST131, blaCIT-carrying ST405, and blaCTX-M-1-carrying ST3285 strains were dominant among E. coli isolates. ST273 and ST275 strains harboring blaSHV were frequently detected in K. pneumoniae isolates. Various sequence types were obtained in E. cloacae and Klebsiella oxytoca isolates. All isolates demonstrated unique PFGE profiles (<57–98% similarity) and were unlikely to be derived from a single clone. Developing high performance, highly stable, and low-cost electrodes for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is challenging in water electrolysis technology. However, Ir- and Ru-based OER catalysts with high OER efficiency are difficult to commercialize as precious metal-based catalysts. Therefore, the study of OER catalysts, which are replaced by non-precious metals and have high activity and stability, are necessary. In this study, a copper–cobalt oxide nanosheet (CCO) electrode was synthesized by the electrodeposition of copper–cobalt hydroxide (CCOH) on Ni foam followed by annealing. The CCOH was annealed at various temperatures, and the structure changed to that of CCO at temperatures above 250 °C. In addition, it was observed that the nanosheets agglomerated when annealed at 300 °C. The CCO electrode annealed at 250 °C had a high surface area and efficient electron conduction pathways as a result of the direct growth on the Ni foam. Thus, the prepared CCO electrode exhibited enhanced OER activity (1.6 V at 261 mA/cm2) compared to those of CCOH (1.6 V at 144 mA/cm2), Co3O4 (1.6 V at 39 mA/cm2), and commercial IrO2 (1.6 V at 14 mA/cm2) electrodes. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease characterized by irreversible cognitive dysfunction. Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide is an important pathological factor that triggers the progression of AD through accumulation and aggregation, which leads to AD-related pathologies that consequently affect cognitive functions. Interestingly, several studies have reported that Platycodon grandiflorum root extract (PGE), besides exhibiting other bioactive effects, displays neuroprotective, anti-neuroinflammatory, and cognitive-enhancing effects. However, to date, it is not clear whether PGE can affect AD-related cognitive dysfunction and pathogenesis. Therefore, to investigate whether PGE influences cognitive impairment in an animal model of AD, we conducted a Y-maze test using a 5XFAD mouse model. Oral administration of PGE for 3 weeks at a daily dose of 100 mg/kg significantly ameliorated cognitive impairment in 5XFAD mice. Moreover, to elucidate the neurohistological mechanisms underlying the PGE-mediated alleviative effect on cognitive dysfunction, we performed histological analysis of hippocampal formation in these mice. Histopathological analysis showed that PGE significantly alleviated AD-related pathologies such as Aβ accumulation, neurodegeneration, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. In addition, we observed a neuroprotective and antioxidant effect of PGE in mouse hippocampal neurons. Our findings suggest that administration of PGE might act as one of the therapeutic agents for AD by decreasing Aβ related pathology and ameliorating Aβ induced cognitive impairment. Hydrogel-based scaffolds have been widely used to fabricate artificial tissues capable of replacing tissues and organs. However, several challenges inherent in fabricating tissues of large size and complex morphology using such scaffolds while ensuring cell viability remain. To address this problem, we synthesized gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) based bioink with cells for fabricating a scaffold with superior characteristics. The bioink was grafted onto a Z-stacking bioprinter that maintained the cells at physiological temperature during the printing process, without exerting any physical pressure on the cells. Various parameters, such as the bioink composition and light exposure time, were optimized. The printing accuracy of the scaffolds was evaluated using photorheological studies. The internal morphology of the scaffolds at different time points was analyzed using electron microscopy. The Z-stacked scaffolds were fabricated using high-speed printing, with the conditions optimized to achieve high model reproducibility. Stable adhesion and high proliferation of cells encapsulated within the scaffold were confirmed. We introduced various strategies to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of Z-stack GelMA bioprinting while ensuring that the scaffolds facilitated cell adhesion, encapsulation, and proliferation. Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes continuous, significant damage to the swine industry worldwide. By RT-PCR-based methods, this study demonstrated the ongoing presence of PEDV in pigs of all ages in Korea at the average detection rate of 9.92%. By the application of Bayesian phylogenetic analysis, it was found that the nucleocapsid (N) gene of PEDV could evolve at similar rates to the spike (S) gene at the order of 10−4 substitutions/site/year. Based on branching patterns of PEDV strains, three main N gene-base genogroups (N1, N2, and N3) and two sub-genogroups (N3a, N3b) were proposed in this study. By analyzing the antigenic index, possible antigenic differences also emerged in both the spike and nucleocapsid proteins between the three genogroups. The antigenic indexes of genogroup N3 strains were significantly lower compared with those of genogroups N1 and N2 strains in the B-cell epitope of the nucleocapsid protein. Similarly, significantly lower antigenic indexes in some parts of the B-cell epitope sequences of the spike protein (COE, S1D, and 2C10) were also identified. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia. AD involves major pathologies such as amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. During the progression of AD, microglia can be polarized from anti-inflammatory M2 to pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype. The activation of triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) may result in microglia phenotype switching from M1 to M2, which finally attenuated Aβ deposition and memory loss in AD. Low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) is known to ameliorate Aβ pathology and cognitive deficits in AD; however, the therapeutic mechanisms of LDIR against AD-related pathology have been little studied. First, we reconfirm that LDIR (two Gy per fraction for five times)-treated six-month 5XFAD mice exhibited (1) the reduction of Aβ deposition, as reflected by thioflavins S staining, and (2) the improvement of cognitive deficits, as revealed by Morris water maze test, compared to sham-exposed 5XFAD mice. To elucidate the mechanisms of LDIR-induced inhibition of Aβ accumulation and memory loss in AD, we examined whether LDIR regulates the microglial phenotype through the examination of levels of M1 and M2 cytokines in 5XFAD mice. In addition, we investigated the direct effects of LDIR on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production and secretion of M1/M2 cytokines in the BV-2 microglial cells. In the LPS- and LDIR-treated BV-2 cells, the M2 phenotypic marker CD206 was significantly increased, compared with LPS- and sham-treated BV-2 cells. Finally, the effect of LDIR on M2 polarization was confirmed by detection of increased expression of TREM2 in LPS-induced BV2 cells. These results suggest that LDIR directly induced phenotype switching from M1 to M2 in the brain with AD. Taken together, our results indicated that LDIR modulates LPS- and Aβ-induced neuroinflammation by promoting M2 polarization via TREM2 expression, and has beneficial effects in the AD-related pathology such as Aβ deposition and memory loss. It has been reported that damage to the mitochondria affects the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and that mitochondrial dysfunction is improved by omega-3. However, no animal or cell model studies have confirmed whether omega-3 inhibits AD pathology related to mitochondria deficits. In this study, we aimed to (1) identify mitigating effects of endogenous omega-3 on mitochondrial deficits and AD pathology induced by amyloid beta (Aβ) in fat-1 mice, a transgenic omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs)-producing animal; (2) identify if docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) improves mitochondrial deficits induced by Aβ in HT22 cells; and (3) verify improvement effects of DHA administration on mitochondrial deficits and AD pathology in B6SJL-Tg(APPSwFlLon,PSEN1*M146L*L286V)6799Vas/Mmjax (5XFAD), a transgenic Aβ-overexpressing model. We found that omega-3 PUFAs significantly improved Aβ-induced mitochondrial pathology in fat-1 mice. In addition, our in vitro and in vivo findings demonstrate that DHA attenuated AD-associated pathologies, such as mitochondrial impairment, Aβ accumulation, neuroinflammation, neuronal loss, and impairment of adult hippocampal neurogenesis. The S glycoprotein of coronaviruses is important for viral entry and pathogenesis with most variable sequences. Therefore, we analyzed the S gene sequences of SARS-CoV-2 to better understand the antigenicity and immunogenicity of this virus in this study. In phylogenetic analysis, two subtypes (SARS-CoV-2a and -b) were confirmed within SARS-CoV-2 strains. These two subtypes were divided by a novel synonymous mutation of D614G. This may play a crucial role in the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 to evade the host immune system. The region containing this mutation point was confirmed as a B-cell epitope located in the S1 domain, and SARS-CoV-2b strains exhibited severe reduced antigenic indexes compared to SARS-CoV-2a in this area. This may allow these two subtypes to have different antigenicity. If the two subtypes have different serological characteristics, a vaccine for both subtypes will be more effective to prevent COVID-19. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. The neuropathological features of AD include amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition and hyperphosphorylated tau accumulation. Although several clinical trials have been conducted to identify a cure for AD, no effective drug or treatment has been identified thus far. Recently, the potential use of non-pharmacological interventions to prevent or treat AD has gained attention. Low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) is a non-pharmacological intervention which is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for AD patients. However, the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of LDIR therapy have not yet been established. In this study, we examined the effect of LDIR on Aβ accumulation and Aβ-mediated pathology. To investigate the short-term effects of low–moderate dose ionizing radiation (LMDIR), a total of 9 Gy (1.8 Gy per fraction for five times) were radiated to 4-month-old 5XFAD mice, an Aβ-overexpressing transgenic mouse model of AD, and then sacrificed at 4 days after last exposure to LMDIR. Comparing sham-exposed and LMDIR-exposed 5XFAD mice indicated that short-term exposure to LMDIR did not affect Aβ accumulation in the brain, but significantly ameliorated synaptic degeneration, neuronal loss, and neuroinflammation in the hippocampal formation and cerebral cortex. In addition, a direct neuroprotective effect was confirmed in SH-SY5Y neuronal cells treated with Aβ1–42 (2 μM) after single irradiation (1 Gy). In BV-2 microglial cells exposed to Aβ and/or LMDIR, LMDIR therapy significantly inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory molecules and activation of the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. These results indicate that LMDIR directly ameliorated neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation in vivo and in vitro. Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is an irreversible, progressive neurodegenerative disorder and is presently untreatable. Previous studies using animal models have suggested mitochondrial damage and programmed cell death to be involved with ARHL. Thus, we further investigated the pathophysiologic role of mitochondria and necroptosis in aged C57BL/6J male mice. Aged mice (20 months old) exhibited a significant loss of hearing, number of hair cells, neuronal fibers, and synaptic ribbons compared to young mice. Ultrastructural analysis of aged cochleae revealed damaged mitochondria with absent or disorganized cristae. Aged mice also showed significant decrease in cochlear blood flow, and exhibited increase in gene expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α), receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 1 and 3 (RIPK1 and RIPK3) and the pseudokinase mixed-lineage kinase domain-like (MLKL). Immunofluorescence (IF) assays of cytochrome C oxidase I (COX1) confirmed mitochondrial dysfunction in aged cochleae, which correlated with the degree of mitochondrial morphological damage. IF assays also revealed localization and increased expression of RIPK3 in sensorineural tissues that underwent significant necroptosis (inner and outer hair cells and stria vascularis). Together, our data shows that the aging cochlea exhibits damaged mitochondria, enhanced synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines, and provides new evidence of necroptosis in the aging cochlea in in vivo. In this research, a fly ash/epoxy composite was fabricated using fly ash filler classified as industrial waste. The behavior of its mechanical properties was investigated by changing the volume of fly ash to 10, 30 and 50 vol.%. To determine the influence of particle size on the mechanical properties, we used two different sizes of the fly ash, which were separated by sieving to less than 90 μm and 53 μm. To optimize fabrication conditions, the viscosity of the fly ash/epoxy slurry was measured at various temperatures with different fly ash volume fractions. In terms of mechanical properties, tensile strength increased as the amount of fly ash increased, up to a critical point. On the other hand, the compression strength of the composite increased continuously as the amount of fly ash increased. Noise exposure affects the organ of Corti and the lateral wall of the cochlea, including the stria vascularis and spiral ligament. Although the inner ear vasculature and spiral ligament fibrocytes in the lateral wall consist of a significant proportion of cells in the cochlea, relatively little is known regarding their functional significance. In this study, 6-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to noise trauma to induce transient hearing threshold shift (TTS) or permanent hearing threshold shift (PTS). Compared to mice with TTS, mice with PTS exhibited lower cochlear blood flow and lower vessel diameter in the stria vascularis, accompanied by reduced expression levels of genes involved in vasodilation and increased expression levels of genes related to vasoconstriction. Ultrastructural analyses by transmission electron microscopy revealed that the stria vascularis and spiral ligament fibrocytes were more damaged by PTS than by TTS. Moreover, mice with PTS expressed significantly higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines in the cochlea (e.g., IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α). Overall, our findings suggest that cochlear microcirculation and lateral wall pathologies are differentially modulated by the severity of acoustic trauma and are associated with changes in vasoactive factors and inflammatory responses in the cochlea. It is widely known that the degeneration of neural circuits is prominent in the brains of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. The reciprocal connectivity of the medial septum (MS) and hippocampus, which constitutes the septo-hippocampo-septal (SHS) loop, is known to be associated with learning and memory. Despite the importance of the reciprocal projections between the MS and hippocampus in AD, the alteration of bidirectional connectivity between two structures has not yet been investigated at the mesoscale level. In this study, we adopted AD animal model, five familial AD mutations (5XFAD) mice, and anterograde and retrograde tracers, BDA and DiI, respectively, to visualize the pathology-related changes in topographical connectivity of the SHS loop in the 5XFAD brain. By comparing 4.5-month-old and 14-month-old 5XFAD mice, we successfully identified key circuit components of the SHS loop altered in 5XFAD brains. Remarkably, the SHS loop began to degenerate in 4.5-month-old 5XFAD mice before the onset of neuronal loss. The impairment of connectivity between the MS and hippocampus was accelerated in 14-month-old 5XFAD mice. These results demonstrate, for the first time, topographical evidence for the degradation of the interconnection between the MS and hippocampus at the mesoscale level in a mouse model of AD. Our results provide structural and functional insights into the interconnectivity of the MS and hippocampus, which will inform the use and development of various therapeutic approaches that target neural circuits for the treatment of AD. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease and is characterized by neurodegeneration and cognitive deficits. Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide is known to be a major cause of AD pathogenesis. However, recent studies have clarified that mitochondrial deficiency is also a mediator or trigger for AD development. Interestingly, red ginseng (RG) has been demonstrated to have beneficial effects on AD pathology. However, there is no evidence showing whether RG extract (RGE) can inhibit the mitochondrial deficit-mediated pathology in the experimental models of AD. The effects of RGE on Aβ-mediated mitochondrial deficiency were investigated in both HT22 mouse hippocampal neuronal cells and the brains of 5XFAD Aβ-overexpressing transgenic mice. To examine whether RGE can affect mitochondria-related pathology, we used immunohistostaining to study the effects of RGE on Aβ accumulation, neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and impaired adult hippocampal neurogenesis in hippocampal formation of 5XFAD mice. In vitro and in vivo findings indicated that RGE significantly improves Aβ-induced mitochondrial pathology. In addition, RGE significantly ameliorated AD-related pathology, such as Aβ deposition, gliosis, and neuronal loss, and deficits in adult hippocampal neurogenesis in brains with AD. The modification effect of Al-5Ti-1B master alloy on eutectic Mg2Si in Al-Zn-Si-Mg system alloy was investigated in this study. The microstructure shows that an extreme effect can be achieved after the addition of Al-5Ti-1B master alloy into the base alloy. The morphology of eutectic Mg2Si changed from Chinese script to fine polygonal shape, and the size was refined from over 50 μm to under 10 μm. This morphology change is believed to be due to TiB2 particles existing in Al-5Ti-1B master alloy, and the presence of TiB2 particles inside the modified Mg2Si was confirmed by scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM/EDS) observation. The mechanical properties were also improved by the addition of Al-5Ti-1B master alloys. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease, which is accompanied by memory loss and cognitive dysfunction. Although a number of trials to treat AD are in progress, there are no drugs available that inhibit the progression of AD. As the aggregation of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides in the brain is considered to be the major pathology of AD, inhibition of Aβ aggregation could be an effective strategy for AD treatment. Jowiseungchungtang (JWS) is a traditional oriental herbal formulation that has been shown to improve cognitive function in patients or animal models with dementia. However, there are no reports examining the effects of JWS on Aβ aggregation. Thus, we investigated whether JWS could protect against both Aβ aggregates and Aβ-mediated pathology such as neuroinflammation, neurodegeneration, and impaired adult neurogenesis in 5 five familial Alzheimer's disease mutations (5XFAD) mice, an animal model for AD. In an in vitro thioflavin T assay, JWS showed a remarkable anti-Aβ aggregation effect. Histochemical analysis indicated that JWS had inhibitory effects on Aβ aggregation, Aβ-induced pathologies, and improved adult hippocampal neurogenesis in vivo. Taken together, these results suggest the therapeutic possibility of JWS for AD targeting Aβ aggregation, Aβ-mediated neurodegeneration, and impaired adult hippocampal neurogenesis. The elastoplastic deformation behaviors of hollow glass microspheres/iron syntactic foam under tension were modeled using a representative volume element (RVE) approach. The three-dimensional microstructures of the iron syntactic foam with 5 wt % glass microspheres were reconstructed using the random sequential adsorption algorithm. The constitutive behavior of the elastoplasticity in the iron matrix and the elastic-brittle failure for the glass microsphere were simulated in the models. An appropriate RVE size was statistically determined by evaluating elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and yield strength in terms of model sizes and boundary conditions. The model was validated by the agreement with experimental findings. The tensile deformation mechanism of the syntactic foam considering the fracture of the microspheres was then investigated. In addition, the feasibility of introducing the interfacial deboning behavior to the proposed model was briefly investigated to improve the accuracy in depicting fracture behaviors of the syntactic foam. Pathogen-induced reorganization of the host cell cytoskeleton is a common strategy utilized in host cell invasion by many facultative intracellular bacteria, such as Shigella, Listeria, enteroinvasive E. coli and Salmonella. Shigella is an enteroinvasive intracellular pathogen that preferentially infects human epithelial cells and causes bacillary dysentery. Invasion of Shigella into intestinal epithelial cells requires extensive remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton with the aid of pathogenic effector proteins injected into the host cell by the activity of the type III secretion system. These so-called Shigella invasins, including IpaA, IpaC, IpgB1, IpgB2 and IpgD, modulate the actin-regulatory system in a concerted manner to guarantee efficient entry of the bacteria into host cells.
