Ablative materials are widely employed to protect space vehicles from the extreme thermal conditions experienced during their flight into a planetary atmosphere. Carbon-phenolic ablators are composed of a phenolic matrix and a fibrous carbon reinforcement. In the present study, the fibrous reinforcement has been modified through the deposition of thin protective layers of zirconium oxide and aluminum oxide, with the objective of reducing fiber recession and oxidation. The depositions were carried out via atomic layer deposition (ALD), a method that allows for the controlled deposition of uniform and conformal coatings on the carbon felt fibers. The depositions were subsequently evaluated through SEM-EDS analysis. Pristine and ALD-modified felts were impregnated with a phenolic resin matrix and the ablation performance of the composite materials was evaluated through oxyacetylene flame tests. The results demonstrated that, in comparison to uncoated ablators, the ALD-modified samples exhibited enhanced performance in terms of mass loss and surface recession: compared to uncoated ablators, the former was 14% lower and the latter was diminished by 50%. Moreover, the morphological characterization of the tested specimens revealed a significantly reduced degree of oxidation of the coated fibers which were directly exposed to the flame. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to optimize the prediction of pressure fluctuations over the external surfaces of aerospace launchers and minimize the number of wind tunnel tests. In the present research, various machine learning (ML) techniques capable of predicting the acoustic load were tested and validated. The methods included decision trees, Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), Support Vector Machines (SVMs), artificial neural networks (ANNs), linear regression, and ensemble methods such as bagged and boosted trees. These algorithms were trained using experimental data from an extensive wind tunnel test campaign conducted to support the design of a VEGA (Advanced Generation European Vehicle) launcher vehicle and provide wall pressure fluctuations in many configurations. The main objective of this study was to identify, among several algorithms, the most suitable method able to process such complex databases efficiently and to provide reliable predictions. Different statistical indices, including the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean square error (MSE), and a correlation coefficient (R-squared), were employed to evaluate the performance of the ML methods. Among all the methods, the bagged tree algorithm outperformed the others, providing the most accurate predictions, with low RMSE and high R-squared values across all test cases. Other methods, such as the ANNs and GPR, exhibited higher errors, indicating their reduced suitability for this dataset. The results demonstrate that ensemble decision tree methods are highly effective in predicting acoustic loads, offering reliable predictions, even for configurations outside the training database. Simple Summary: A growing world population has increased the demand for animal protein, and the poultry industry is a major contributor to meeting this demand. Increasing feed costs and unreliable availability have prompted the poultry industry to identify and evaluate alternative feed ingredients. In this study, we evaluate the energy and amino acid availability of spirulina (Arthrospira platensis), a filamentous blue-green microalgae. The results show that spirulina is a high-quality feed ingredient for possible inclusion in poultry diets. Our study objective was to determine the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility (AIAAD) of spirulina fed to broiler chickens and laying hens using the difference method. In both experiments, birds were either fed corn-soybean meal basal diets, containing no spirulina and formulated to provide the nutrient requirements of either broilers or layers, or fed test diets consisting of 25% spirulina and 75% of the appropriate basal diet. Titanium dioxide was added to all diets as an indigestible marker. The diets were fed to 10 replicate cages/treatment of broilers and 15 replicate cages/treatment of laying hens. The AME of spirulina for broilers was significantly lower (p < 0.05) (2368 ± 104 kcal/kg, as fed) than for laying hens (3144 ± 173 kcal/kg, as fed), suggesting bird type and age may influence energy utilization. The AIAAD of spirulina fed to broiler chickens did not differ from that of laying hens (p > 0.05), except for valine, alanine, and glycine, which were all significantly higher in laying hens (p < 0.05). Overall, the AIAAD for nonessential amino acids averaged 81.1%, with no significant difference between essential and nonessential amino acids. Differences in spirulina nutrient content cited in the literature support further research to determine the optimal inclusion of this alternative ingredient in broiler and layer diets. Background: This multicentric, retrospective study investigated the use of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in patients (pts) with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) who experienced oligoprogression during a combination therapy with an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) and a tyrosine–kinase inhibitor (TKI). Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 34 pts affected by oligoprogressive RCC treated with an ICI–TKI combination between January 2020 and December 2023. SBRT was delivered to each site of oligoprogressive metastatic disease. After SBRT, pts were given follow-up clinical evaluations. 6–12–18-month local control (LC) rates and median next-line treatment-free survival (NEST-FS) were the primary endpoints. The secondary endpoints were overall response rate (ORR), clinical benefits and safety. Results: After a median follow-up of 24 months, 6–12–18-month LC rates were 100%, 71% and 43%, respectively, and the median NEST-FS was 20 months. ORR was 90%, while clinical benefit was 100%. No > G2 adverse events related to SBRT were recorded. Conclusions: In our study, SBRT for oligoprogressive mRCC turned out to be a safe and useful treatment which was able to preserve current treatment. The study of bioactive molecules of marine origin has created an important bridge between biological knowledge and its applications in biotechnology and biomedicine. Current studies in different research fields, such as biomedicine, aim to discover marine molecules characterized by biological activities that can be used to produce potential drugs for human use. In recent decades, increasing attention has been paid to a particular group of marine invertebrates, the Ascidians, as they are a source of bioactive products. We describe omics data and computational methods relevant to identifying the mechanisms and processes of innate immunity underlying the biosynthesis of bioactive molecules, focusing on innovative computational approaches based on Artificial Intelligence. Since there is increasing attention on finding new solutions for a sustainable supply of bioactive compounds, we propose that a possible improvement in the biodiscovery pipeline might also come from the study and utilization of marine invertebrates' innate immunity. Blood serves as the primary global biological matrix for health surveillance, disease diagnosis, and response to drug treatment, holding significant promise for personalized medicine. The diverse array of lipids and metabolites in the blood provides a snapshot of both physiological and pathological processes, with many routinely monitored during conventional wellness checks. The conventional method involves intravenous blood collection, extracting a few milliliters via venipuncture, a technique limited to clinical settings due to its dependence on trained personnel. Microsampling methods have evolved to be less invasive (collecting ≤150 µL of capillary blood), user-friendly (enabling self-collection), and suitable for remote collection in longitudinal studies. Dried blood spot (DBS), a pioneering microsampling technique, dominates clinical and research domains. Recent advancements in device technology address critical limitations of classical DBS, specifically variations in hematocrit and volume. This review presents a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art microsampling devices, emphasizing their applications and potential for monitoring metabolites and lipids in blood. San Nicola Island, pertaining to the Tremiti Archipelago (Southern Adriatic Sea, Italy), is widely affected by cliff retreat and gravitational phenomena which severely threaten its monumental historical and natural value. In this study, geomorphological features of the area were derived following a stepwise approach, combining multitemporal stereoscopic aerial photo interpretations with morphometric analyses and detailed field surveys. A rockfall susceptibility map was created following a heuristic approach based on morphometric and geothematic parameters, accounting for slope, slope aspect, outcropping lithologies, structural discontinuities density, distance from landslide scarps, and presence of anthropic caves. Cliff sectors set on dolomitic limestones feature the highest susceptibility values, especially along the southeastern sector; medium values, instead, are found along the island flanks and along scarps located within the inner sectors; and the lowest values are detected on summit tabular surfaces. The achieved results were compared with historical maps and seismic data derived from local and national archives and catalogues, respectively. These analyses allowed us to define the role played by litho-structural and tectonic features on landslide occurrence and distribution, and their interplay in driving landscape evolution over centuries. Finally, this work represents a valuable scientific tool to support geomorphological studies for landslide hazard assessment and proper territorial planning in any other small insular areas, showing similar geological–geomorphological features and landscape values. Domestic chimney cleaning is still mostly a manual procedure which can be overly complex, dangerous, and expansive. This paper describes the design of a novel robotic device for chimney cleaning that aims to provide a valuable alternative solution to the traditional manual techniques with user-friendly and low-cost features. The proposed device enables a significant reduction in operator risks, including roof falling and soot dust contact. The paper's content describes, in detail, the design process, including a definition of the main design requirements and steps towards the manufacturing of a preliminary prototype. Moreover, a preliminary validation is described through laboratory tests to demonstrate the engineering feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed design solution for the intended semi-autonomous chimney-cleaning application. The protein disulfide isomerase A3 (PDIA3) is directly or indirectly involved in various physiopathological processes and participates in cancer initiation, progression and chemosensitivity. However, little is known about its involvement in glioblastoma. To obtain specific information, we performed cellular experiments in the T98G and U−87 MG glioblastoma cell lines to evaluate the role of PDIA3. The loss of PDIA3 functions, either through inhibition or silencing, reduced glioblastoma cells spreading by triggering cytotoxic phenomena. PDIA3 inhibition led to a redistribution of PDIA3, resulting in the formation of protein aggregates visualized through immunofluorescence staining. Concurrently, cell cycle progression underwent arrest at the G1/S checkpoint. After PDIA3 inhibition, ROS-independent DNA damage and the activation of the repair system occurred, as evidenced by the phosphorylation of H2A.X and the overexpression of the Ku70 protein. We also demonstrated through a clonogenic assay that PDIA3 inhibition could increase the chemosensitivity of T98G and U-87 MG cells to the approved glioblastoma drug temozolomide (TMZ). Overall, PDIA3 inhibition induced cytotoxic effects in the analyzed glioblastoma cell lines. The early and non-invasive diagnosis of tumor diseases has been widely investigated by the scientific community focusing on the development of sensors/biomarkers that act as a way of recognizing the adhesion of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). As a challenge in this area, strategies for CTCs capture and enrichment currently require improvements in the sensors/biomarker's selectivity. This can be achieved by understanding the biological recognition factors for different cancer cell lines and also by understanding the interaction between surface parameters and the affinity between macromolecules and the cell surface. To overcome some of these concerns, electrochemical sensors have been used as precise, fast-response, and low-cost transduction platforms for application in cytosensors. Additionally, distinct materials, geometries, and technologies have been investigated to improve the sensitivity and specificity properties of the support electrode that will transform biochemical events into electrical signals. This review identifies novel approaches regarding the application of different specific biomarkers (CD44, Integrins, and EpCAm) for capturing CTCs. SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCf/SiC CMCs) are regarded as the new materials for the hot-section components of aircraft gas turbine engines, since they have one-third of the density of metallic superalloys, a higher temperature capability, good mechanical strength, and excellent thermal shock resistance. However, high-temperature water-vapor-rich combustion gases can induce severe surface recession phenomena in SiC/SiC leading to component failure. For this reason, it is necessary to design protective coatings, i.e., environmental barrier coatings (EBCs), able to protect the SiC/SiC surface in combustion environments. In the present work, ytterbium monosilicate (Yb2SiO5), stable when exposed to water vapor at high temperatures, and ytterbium disilicate (Yb2Si2O7), characterized by a thermal expansion coefficient closer to that of the substrate, were selected for a multilayer EBC system. EBCs were processed using the atmospheric plasma spray (APS) technique. A set of deposition parameters were tested, varying the power of the torch, and the composition and microstructure of the deposited coatings were studied in terms of porosity, crack density, and post-deposition phase retention by performing SEM, EDS, and XRD analysis. A new lead-free electroless Ni-P plating solution was developed for the deposition of coatings with medium phosphorus content (MP, 6–9 wt%), and its composition was optimized to obtain deposits with high phosphorus (HP, 10–14 wt%). Cleaning and activation treatments were studied in terms of effectiveness and influence on the deposition rate. The concentration of reagents (nickel salt, complexing agent, reducing agent and stabilizer) was studied, and their combined effect on P content and plating rate was investigated. The obtained coatings were analyzed by SEM and XRD and thermally treated at 400 °C and 600 °C to study microstructural evolution. Vickers hardness was measured on as-deposited and annealed coatings to relate hardness evolution to microstructural changes after thermal treatments. Optimal deposition conditions were determined, enabling the production of MP coatings (6.5 wt% P) with a plating rate of 40 µm/h and HP coatings (10.9 wt% P) with a plating rate of 25 µm/h at 90 °C. Samples heat-treated at 400 °C showed improved hardness thanks to crystallization and microprecipitation of Ni3P hard phases, whereas hardness decrease was observed after treatment at 600 °C due to the combined effect of grain growth and coarsening of Ni3P precipitates. This paper presents a morphometric and structural-geomorphological approach to identifying morphotectonic features across an area underlain by lithologies that do not easily record tectonic deformations but are widely affected by seismic activity. The middle Biferno River Valley (Central Italy) was chosen as a study area. It was investigated through analyses performed from the drainage basin scale (Biferno River) to the local scale (Ponte Liscione Dam). This methodological approach was applied to investigate the impact of morphotectonic processes in the study area, providing a geomorphology-based contribution to landscape evolution. The aim of the work was to discriminate the main morphotectonic elements acting in the complex tectonic framework of the study area by means of a combination of morphometric, morphotectonic, and structural-geomorphological analyses. The resulting data allowed us to identify three main systems of tectonic elements (F1, F2, and F3), which are attributable to compressive and extensional kinematics, as already reported in previous thematic studies. The tectonic setting reflects the geodynamic framework of the Periadriatic region, as highlighted by the distribution of seismogenic sources and the historical to recent seismicity. Finally, the present work could act as a valuable scientific tool for any geomorphological studies aimed at better defining the impact of morphotectonic processes in similar tectonically active regions hosting important and strategic artificial dams. Simple Summary: The prognostic relevance of a patient achieving complete response to hydroxyurea, the predictors of response, and patients' triggers for switching to ruxolitinib are uncertain. A retrospective, real-world analysis was performed on 563 polycythemia vera patients treated with hydroxyurea for ≥12 months during an observational "PV-NET" Italian study. We investigated factors associated with a complete response to hydroxyurea and outcomes of the 397 poor responders to hydroxyurea according to whether they subsequently received ruxolitinib (n = 114) or continued hydroxyurea (n = 283). The results suggest that many PV patients receive underdosed hydroxyurea, leading to lower response and toxicity rates. In addition, many patients continued hydroxyurea despite a poor clinical or hematological response; however, splenomegaly and other symptoms were the main drivers of an early switch. Better HU management, standardization of the criteria for and timing of responses to HU, and adequate intervention in poor responders should be advised. In polycythemia vera (PV), the prognostic relevance of an ELN-defined complete response (CR) to hydroxyurea (HU), the predictors of response, and patients' triggers for switching to ruxolitinib are uncertain. In a real-world analysis, we evaluated the predictors of response, their impact on the clinical outcomes of CR to HU, and the correlations between partial or no response (PR/NR) and a patient switching to ruxolitinib. Among 563 PV patients receiving HU for ≥12 months, 166 (29.5%) achieved CR, 264 achieved PR, and 133 achieved NR. In a multivariate analysis, the absence of splenomegaly (p = 0.03), pruritus (p = 0.002), and a median HU dose of ≥1 g/day (p < 0.001) remained associated with CR. Adverse events were more frequent with a median HU dose of ≥1 g/day. Overall, 283 PR/NR patients (71.3%) continued HU, and 114 switched to ruxolitinib. In the 449 patients receiving only HU, rates of thrombosis, hemorrhages, progression, and overall survival were comparable among the CR, PR, and NR groups. Many PV patients received underdosed HU, leading to lower CR and toxicity rates. In addition, many patients continued HU despite a PR/NR; however, splenomegaly and other symptoms were the main drivers of an early switch. Invasive bacterial infections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality after liver transplant (LT), especially during the first months after LT, and infections due to multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDRO) are increasing in this setting. Most of the infections in patients in intensive care unit arise from the endogenous microflora and, for this reason, pre-LT MDRO rectal colonization is a risk factor for developing MDRO infections in the post-LT. Moreover, the transplanted liver may carry an increased risk of MDRO infections due to organ transportation and preservation, to donor intensive care unit stay and previous antibiotic exposure. To date, little evidence is available about how MDRO pre-LT colonization in donors and recipients should address LT preventive and antibiotic prophylactic strategies, in order to reduce MDRO infections in the post-LT period. The present review provided an extensive overview of the recent literature on these topics, with the aim to offer a comprehensive insight about the epidemiology of MDRO colonization and infections in adult LT recipients, donor-derived MDRO infections, possible surveillance, and prophylactic strategies to reduce post-LT MDRO infections. It is well-known that sensorimotor training aims to increase the performance of the sensorimotor system to maintain an upright position. Through the use of a randomized placebo-controlled trial, the specific aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of a specific session of sensorimotor training on postural balance, stability and coordination in healthy, recreationally active participants. Ninety subjects were randomly allocated into three groups: experimental (n = 30), placebo (n = 32) and control (n = 28). The experimental group performed a 5 min warm-up, with the sensorimotor training consisting of 60-min specific sensorimotor exercises; the control group was not allowed to perform any sensorimotor training; the placebo group observed a video clip of an individual belonging to the experimental group performing the sensorimotor training accurately. All participants were seen three times per week for 4 weeks. Before and after the entire training, all groups of participants undertook stabilometric parameter assessment. The intervention-mediated sensorimotor training confirmed significant enhancement in the proprioceptive system. Significant improvement in the motor and/or sensory function was observed in the experimental and placebo groups. In conclusion, our findings suggest that specific sensorimotor training performed 3 days per week for 4 weeks could improve postural balance, stability and coordination in healthy individuals. Vaccinia virus (VACV) is the causative agent of an emerging viral zoonosis called bovine vaccinia (BV). Several studies have documented characteristics of VACV infections in Brazil; however, the manner in which this virus is maintained in wildlife remains unknown. This work investigated the presence of viral DNA and anti-orthopoxvirus (OPXV) antibodies in samples collected from small mammals in a VACV-endemic area in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the absence of current outbreaks. Samples did not show amplification of OPXV DNA in molecular tests. However, 5/142 serum samples demonstrated the presence of anti-OPXV neutralizing antibodies in serological tests. These data reinforce the involvement of small mammals in the natural cycle of VACV, highlighting the need for further ecological studies to better understand how this virus is maintained in nature and to develop measures to prevent BV outbreaks. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a very aggressive disease even in its early stages and is characterized by a severe prognosis. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is one of the milestones of treatment, and paclitaxel (PTX) is among the most active drugs used in this setting. However, despite its efficacy, peripheral neuropathy occurs in approximately 20–25% of cases and represents the dose-limiting toxicity of this drug. New deliverable strategies to ameliorate drug delivery and reduce side effects are keenly awaited to improve patients' outcomes. Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have recently been demonstrated as promising drug delivery vectors for cancer treatment. The aim of the present preclinical study is to explore the possibility of a cell therapy approach based on the use of MSCs loaded with PTX to treat TNBC-affected patients. For this purpose, we in vitro evaluated the viability, migration and colony formation of two TNBC cell lines, namely, MDA-MB-231 and BT549, treated with MSC-PTX conditioned medium (MSC-CM PTX) in comparison with both CM of MSCs not loaded with PTX (CTRL) and free PTX. We observed stronger inhibitory effects on survival, migration and tumorigenicity for MSC-CM PTX than for CTRL and free PTX in TNBC cell lines. The Ascidian C. robusta is a powerful model for studying innate immunity. LPS induction activates inflammatory-like reactions in the pharynx and the expression of several innate immune genes in granulocyte hemocytes such as cytokines, for instance, macrophage migration inhibitory factors (CrMifs). This leads to intracellular signaling involving the Nf-kB signaling cascade that triggers downstream pro-inflammatory gene expression. In mammals, the COP9 (Constitutive photomorphogenesis 9) signalosome (CSN) complex also results in the activation of the NF-kB pathway. It is a highly conserved complex in vertebrates, mainly engaged in proteasome degradation which is essential for maintaining processes such as cell cycle, DNA repair, and differentiation. In the present study, we used bioinformatics and in-silico analyses combined with an in-vivo LPS exposure strategy, next-generation sequencing (NGS), and qRT-PCR to elucidate molecules and the temporal dynamics of Mif cytokines, Csn signaling components, and the Nf-κB signaling pathway in C. robusta. A qRT-PCR analysis of immune genes selected from transcriptome data revealed a biphasic activation of the inflammatory response. A phylogenetic and STRING analysis indicated an evolutionarily conserved functional link between the Mif-Csn-Nf-kB axis in ascidian C. robusta during LPS-mediated inflammation response, finely regulated by non-coding molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs). Volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) is a recently developed sample collection method that enables single-drop blood collection in a minimally invasive manner. Blood biomolecules can then be extracted and processed for analysis using several analytical platforms. The integration of VAMS with conventional mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomics approaches is an attractive solution for human studies representing a less-invasive procedure compared to phlebotomy with the additional potential for remote sample collection. However, as we recently demonstrated, VAMS samples require long-term storage at −80 °C. This study investigated the stability of VAMS samples during short-term storage and compared the metabolome obtained from capillary blood collected from the fingertip to those of plasma and venous blood from 22 healthy volunteers. Our results suggest that the blood metabolome collected by VAMS samples is stable at room temperature only for up to 6 h requiring subsequent storage at −80 °C to avoid significant changes in the metabolome. We also demonstrated that capillary blood provides better coverage of the metabolome compared to plasma enabling the analysis of several intracellular metabolites presented in red blood cells. In the present study, we used a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD) (3×Tg-AD mice) to longitudinally analyse the expression level of PDIA3, a protein disulfide isomerase and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) chaperone, in selected brain limbic areas strongly affected by AD-pathology (amygdala, entorhinal cortex, dorsal and ventral hippocampus). Our results suggest that, while in Non-Tg mice PDIA3 levels gradually reduce with aging in all brain regions analyzed, 3×Tg-AD mice showed an age-dependent increase in PDIA3 levels in the amygdala, entorhinal cortex, and ventral hippocampus. A significant reduction of PDIA3 was observed in 3×Tg-AD mice already at 6 months of age, as compared to age-matched Non-Tg mice. A comparative immunohistochemistry analysis performed on 3×Tg-AD mice at 6 (mild AD-like pathology) and 18 (severe AD-like pathology) months of age showed a direct correlation between the cellular level of Aβ and PDIA3 proteins in all the brain regions analysed, even if with different magnitudes. Additionally, an immunohistochemistry analysis showed the presence of PDIA3 in all post-mitotic neurons and astrocytes. Overall, altered PDIA3 levels appear to be age- and/or pathology-dependent, corroborating the ER chaperone's involvement in AD pathology, and supporting the PDIA3 protein as a potential novel therapeutic target for the treatment of AD. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare cancer characterized by a very poor prognosis. Exposure to asbestos is the leading cause of malignant pleural mesothelioma. The preinvasive lesions, the mesothelial hyperplasia and its possible evolution are the focus of the majority of the studies aiming to identify the treatable phase of the disease. The role of BAP-1 and MTAP in the diagnosis of mesothelioma in situ and in the prognosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma is the main topic of recent studies. The management of preinvasive lesions in mesothelioma is still unclear and many aspects are the subject of debate. Background: The birth of a preterm infant and his/her immediate admittance to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are sudden, unexpected, stressful and painful events for parents. In the last decade, in response to the increased awareness of the stressful experiences of parents, much attention has been paid to Family-Centered Care (FCC) and the implementation of the Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program (NIDCAP). According to the NIDCAP model, the infant–parents' dyad is the core of the care provided by the NICU professionals to reduce the stress experienced by parents. So far, the literature does not show a clear correlation between parental experiences and the NICU practices according NIDCAP principles. Aims: To explore how parents of preterm infants experienced the NIDCAP-based care from admission to discharge, in particular, their relationships with NICU professionals and with other parents, and the organization of the couple's daily activities during this process. Design: Qualitative exploratory study. Methods: Twelve parents of preterm infants born between January 2018 and December 2020 at the NICU of Modena, with a gestational age at birth of less than 30 weeks and/or a birth weight of less than 1250 g, were recruited. Three couples had twins, and the total number of infants was 15. All infants were followed for up to 24 months post-term age (PTA) for neurological outcomes. Each couple was given a semi-structured online interview about their experience during their infant's hospitalization in the NICU up to discharge. The interview was developed around three time points: birth, hospitalization and discharge. The data analysis was conducted according to the template analysis method. Results: The admission to the NICU was unexpected and extraordinary, and its impact was contained by the skilled staff who were capable of welcoming the parents and making them feel they were involved and active collaborators in the care of their infant. The emotional experience was compared to being in a blender; they were overwhelmed by changing emotions, ranging from terrible fear to extreme joy. The couple's activities of daily life were reorganized after the infant's birth and admission to the NICU. Fathers felt unbalanced and alone in taking care of their partners and their children. Conclusions: This is the first study in Italy to explore parental experience in an NICU implementing NIDCAP-based care. The NIDCAP approach in the NICU of Modena helps parents to be involved early, to develop parental skills, and to be prepared for the transition home; and it also facilitates and enhances the relationship between parents and NICU staff. Many biological systems are characterised by biological entities, as well as their relationships. These interaction networks can be modelled as graphs, with nodes representing bio-entities, such as molecules, and edges representing relations among them, such as interactions. Due to the current availability of a huge amount of biological data, it is very important to consider in silico analysis methods based on, for example, machine learning, that could take advantage of the inner graph structure of the data in order to improve the quality of the results. In this scenario, graph neural networks (GNNs) are recent computational approaches that directly deal with graph-structured data. In this paper, we present a GNN network for the analysis of siRNA–mRNA interaction networks. siRNAs, in fact, are small RNA molecules that are able to bind to target genes and silence them. These events make siRNAs key molecules as RNA interference agents in many biological interaction networks related to severe diseases such as cancer. In particular, our GNN approach allows for the prediction of the siRNA efficacy, which measures the siRNA's ability to bind and silence a gene target. Tested on benchmark datasets, our proposed method overcomes other machine learning algorithms, including the state-of-the-art predictor based on the convolutional neural network, reaching a Pearson correlation coefficient of approximately 73.6%. Finally, we proposed a case study where the efficacy of a set of siRNAs is predicted for a gene of interest. To the best of our knowledge, GNNs were used for the first time in this scenario. Biochar has been used in various applications, e.g., as a soil conditioner and in remediation of contaminated water, wastewater, and gaseous emissions. In the latter application, biochar was shown to be a suitable alternative to activated carbon, providing high treatment efficiency. Since biochar is a by-product of waste pyrolysis, its use allows for compliance with circular economics. Thus, this research aims to obtain a detailed characterization of three carbonaceous materials: an activated carbon (CARBOSORB NC 1240®) and two biochars (RE-CHAR® and AMBIOTON®). In particular, the objective of this work is to compare the properties of three carbonaceous materials to evaluate whether the application of the two biochars is the same as that of activated carbon. The characterization included, among others, particle size distribution, elemental analysis, pH, scanning electron microscope, pore volume, specific surface area, and ionic exchange capacity. The results showed that CARBOSORB NC 1240® presented a higher specific surface (1126.64 m2/g) than AMBIOTON® (256.23 m2/g) and RE-CHAR® (280.25 m2/g). Both biochar and activated carbon belong to the category of mesoporous media, showing a pore size between 2 and 50 nm (20–500 Å). Moreover, the chemical composition analysis shows similar C, H, and N composition in the three carbonaceous materials while a higher O composition in RE-CHAR® (9.9%) than in CARBOSORB NC 1240 ® (2.67%) and AMBIOTON® (1.10%). Differences in physical and chemical properties are determined by the feedstock and pyrolysis or gasification temperature. This work focuses on the distribution of LINE-1 (a Long Interspersed Nuclear Element) in primates and its role during evolution and as a constituent of the architecture of primate genomes. To pinpoint the LINE-1 repeat distribution and its role among primates, LINE-1 probes were mapped onto chromosomes of Homo sapiens (Hominidae, Catarrhini), Sapajus apella, and Cebus capucinus (Cebidae, Platyrrhini) using fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH). The choice of platyrrhine species are due to the fact they are taxa characterised by a high level of rearrangements; for this reason, they could be a useful model for the study of LINE-1 and chromosome evolution. LINE-1 accumulation was found in the two Cebidae at the centromere of almost all acrocentric chromosomes 16–22 and on some bi-armed chromosomes. LINE-1 pattern was similar in the two species but only for chromosomes 6, 8, 10, and 18, due to intrachromosomal rearrangements in agreement with what was previously hypothesised as through g banding. LINE-1 interstitial accumulation was found in humans on the 1, 8, 9, 13–15, and X chromosomes; on chromosomes 8, 9, and 13–15, the signal was also at the centromeric position. This is in agreement with recent and complete molecular sequence analysis of human chromosomes 8 and some acrocentric ones. Thus, the hypothesis regarding a link between LINE-1 and centromeres as well as a link with rearrangements are discussed. Indeed, data analysis leads us to support a link between LINE-1 and inter- and intrachromosomal rearrangements, as well as a link between LINE-1 and structural functions at centromeres in primates. Italy was the first Western country to face a massive SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. The limited information initially available on the natural course of the disease required caution in the discharge of patients accessing health facilities. This resulted in overcrowded health facilities and emergency services. In this context, improvements of other forms of hospital care assistance were needed. This study shows the results of the first Italian remote monitoring program for COVID-19 patients. The program was implemented by the Azienda Socio Sanitaria (ASST) Lodi (Italy) by using the innovative Zcare software®. Data generated during patient recruitment, monitoring, and discharge were extracted from the Zcare software and statistically analysed. Data refer to a sample of 1196 patients enrolled in the remote monitoring program in 2020. Patients reported symptoms mainly during the first week. The most frequently reported symptoms were general fatigue, cough, and loss of taste and smell (dysosmia). More than 80% of patients reported a saturation level below 96% at least once, and more than 70% had a temperature above 37 °C. Active monitoring of reported symptoms provided valuable insights into the disease's natural history during its less severe acute phase. Only 109 individuals visited the emergency department at least once in the first 100 days of monitoring. Of these, 101 had COVID-19 infection, 69 of whom were hospitalized following a first clinical assessment at the emergency department. The ASST Lodi's telemedicine strategy for COVID patients appears to be a viable alternative to hospitalization. This strategy enables the provision of proper care while making resources available for more critically ill patients, and enhances the availability of resources available for more critically ill patients. Metabolites are intermediates or end products of biochemical processes involved in both health and disease. Here, we take advantage of the well-characterized Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) study to perform an exome-wide association study (ExWAS) on absolute concentrations of 175 metabolites in 3294 individuals. To increase power, we imputed the identified variants into an additional 2211 genotyped individuals of CHRIS. In the resulting dataset of 5505 individuals, we identified 85 single-variant genetic associations, of which 39 have not been reported previously. Fifteen associations emerged at ten variants with >5-fold enrichment in CHRIS compared to non-Finnish Europeans reported in the gnomAD database. For example, the CHRIS-enriched ETFDH stop gain variant p.Trp286Ter (rs1235904433-hexanoylcarnitine) and the MCCC2 stop lost variant p.Ter564GlnextTer3 (rs751970792-carnitine) have been found in patients with glutaric acidemia type II and 3-methylcrotonylglycinuria, respectively, but the loci have not been associated with the respective metabolites in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) previously. We further identified three gene-trait associations, where multiple rare variants contribute to the signal. As a major life trauma, COVID-19 had negative impacts on psychological well-being. The aim of this study was to test and verify the mediation of resilience, hope and self-efficacy and to analyze the moderating effect of gender and COVID-19 contagion on the association between symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression, and post-traumatic growth among adults during COVID-19. A cross-sectional study was conducted via an online survey with self-administered questionnaires. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory, the Resilience Scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Comprehensive State Hope Scale were used. A total of 493 (n = 262 female and n = 231 male) participated in the survey (Mage = 33.40 years, SD = 13.41, range = 20 to 60). A multiple mediation model was used to verify the mediating effect of resilience, hope and self-efficacy on the relationship between symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression, and PTG. A moderated mediation model was examined to find and test the moderated effects of gender and COVID-19 contagion on the mediation model. Results showed the indirect effects of anxiety (β = 0.340 (0.120); 95% CI [from 0.128 to 0.587]) and depression (β = 0.222 (0.095); 95% CI [0.048, 0.429]) on PTG trough resilience and hope. Symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression, and self-efficacy were significantly highest in females. Moreover, males and participants with COVID-19 contagion had significantly higher levels of resilience and post-traumatic growth. These findings suggest that hope and resilience, as protective factors, could be an important key to developing an intervention strategy to enhance and improve psychological health during a crisis. Landslide susceptibility maps and soil sealing/land consumption maps were combined to derive a spatially distributed indicator (LRI - Landslide Risk Index). Landslides are among the most widespread and frequent natural hazards that lead to fatalities, socioeconomic losses, and property damage globally [[1]]. All landslide types have been considered, from DGSDs to complex and historical landslides, from rockfalls to debris flows, and from slow-moving slides to shallow landslides. Historical landslides were analysed using an integrated approach combining literature data and landslide inventory analysis, relationships between landslide types and lithological units, detailed photogeological analysis, and geomorphological field mapping. Mass movements processes (i.e., landslides and snow avalanches) play an important role in landscape evolution and largely affect high mountain environments worldwide and in Italy. The increase in temperatures, the irregularity of intense weather events, and several heavy snowfall events increased mass movements' occurrence, especially in mountain regions with a high impact on settlements, infrastructures, and well-developed tourist facilities. In detail, the Prati di Tivo area, located on the northern slope of the Gran Sasso Massif (Central Italy), has been widely affected by mass movement phenomena. Following some recent damaging snow avalanches, a risk mitigation protocol has been activated to develop mitigation activities and land use policies. The main goal was to perform a multidisciplinary analysis of detailed climatic and geomorphological analysis, integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) processing, to advance snow avalanche hazard assessment methodologies in mass movement-prone areas. Furthermore, this work could represent an operative tool for any geomorphological hazard studies in high mountainous environments, readily available to interested stakeholders. Hypertransaminasemia in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) is reported to be transient. Here, we describe a child with an atypically protracted course of liver tests abnormalities and review the inherent literature. The patient was hospitalized at age 7-months for isolated hypertransaminasemia detected during a classical KD diagnosed 3 months before, and persistent since then. KD clinical evolution had been favorable, with rapid response to acetylsalicylic acid and intravenous immunoglobulins. Liver enzymes however remained persistently elevated with a fluctuating pattern (ALT > AST levels; peak of AST 186 IU/L and ALT 240 IU/L). During follow-up, the main causes of liver dysfunction had to be excluded through appropriate and extensive laboratory investigations. Transaminases values become steadily normal only 7 months after the acute presentation of KD. Conclusions: Our report shows that an atypically protracted courses of KD-related hypertransaminasemia above the previously reported temporal limits should be taken into account during the stepwise diagnostic approach to the patient's liver dysfunction. Insidious acetylsalycilic acid-hepatotoxicity warrants consideration in the differential diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
