The increasing demand for food and the overexploitation of natural resources rapidly deplete the planet's ecosystems, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. Nature-based solutions effectively promote agricultural sustainability and environmental conservation but require continuous financial and political support to overcome existing barriers. This research examines these solutions' effectiveness in Santa María Jacatepec, a biocultural region of Indigenous peoples in the Papaloapan Basin, Oaxaca, Mexico. A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative analyses uses National Institute of Statistics and Geography data to evaluate socioeconomic and environmental indicators. The results indicate that despite pressures to develop cattle ranching, communities have maintained rain-fed agriculture, especially the milpa system, ensuring food sovereignty and preserving agricultural biodiversity. Additionally, implementation of Voluntarily Conserved Areas has facilitated access to payments for environmental services, incentivizing ecosystem protection. However, financial and structural challenges persist, limiting the expansion of these solutions. Santa María Jacatepec exemplifies how Indigenous communities can apply nature-based solutions to strengthen agricultural sustainability and environmental conservation. Integrating traditional knowledge and strengthening conservation policies can enhance community resilience and ensure sustainable development amid increasing pressure on natural ecosystems. Background: Injuries of the proximal attachment of the hamstring muscles are common. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship of the proximal attachment of the hamstring muscles with neighboring structures comprehensively. Methods: A total of 97 hemipelvis from 66 cryopreserved specimens were evaluated via ultrasound, anatomical and histological samples. Results: The proximal attachment of the hamstring muscles presents a hyperechogenic line surrounding the origin of the semimembranosus and the long head of the biceps femoris muscles, as well as another hyperechogenic line covering the sciatic nerve. The anatomical and histological study confirms the ultrasound results and shows different layers forming the sacrotuberous ligament. Furthermore, it shows that the proximal attachment of the semimembranosus muscle has a more proximal origin than the rest of the hamstring muscles. Moreover, this muscle shares fibers with the long head of the biceps femoris muscle and expands to the adductor magnus muscle. The histological analysis also shows the dense connective tissue of the retinaculum covering the long head of the biceps femoris and semimembranosus muscles, as well as the expansion covering the sciatic nerve. Gastric cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. The presence of chemoresistant cells has been used to explain this high mortality rate. These higher tumorigenic and chemoresistant cells involve cancer stem cells (CSCs), which have the potential for self-renewal, a cell differentiation capacity, and a greater tumorigenic capacity. Our research group identified gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) with the CD24+CD44+CD326+ICAM1+ immunophenotype isolated from gastric cancer patients. Interestingly, this GCSC immunophenotype was absent in cells isolated from healthy people, who presented a cell population with a CD24+CD44+CD326+ immunophenotype, lacking ICAM1. We aimed to explore the role of ICAM1 in these GCSCs; for this purpose, we isolated GCSCs from the AGS cell line and generated a GCSC line knockout for ICAM1 using CRISPR/iCas9, which we named GCSC-ICAM1KO. To assess the role of ICAM1 in the GCSCs, we analyzed the migration, invasion, and chemoresistance capabilities of the GCSCs using in vitro assays and evaluated the migratory, invasive, and tumorigenic properties in a zebrafish model. The in vitro analysis showed that ICAM1 regulated STAT3 activation (pSTAT3-ser727) in the GCSCs, which could contribute to the ability of GCSCs to migrate, invade, and metastasize. Interestingly, we demonstrated that the GCSC-ICAM1KO cells lost their capacity to migrate, invade, and metastasize, but they exhibited an increased resistance to a cisplatin treatment compared to their parental GCSCs; the GCSC-ICAM1KO cells also exhibited an increased tumorigenic capability in vivo. The aim of this review paper is to survey the fractal morphology of scale-invariant patterns. We are particularly focusing on the scale and conformal invariance, as well as on the fractal non-uniformity (multifractality), inhomogeneity (lacunarity), and anisotropy (succolarity). We argue that these features can be properly quantified by the following six adimensional numbers: the fractal (e.g., similarity, box-counting, or Assouad) dimension, conformal dimension, degree of multifractal non-uniformity, coefficient of multifractal asymmetry, index of lacunarity, and index of fractal anisotropy. Simple Summary: KRAS is one of the most prominent driver genes implicated in colorectal cancer (CRC), with mutations detected in 33% to 50% of CRC patients. Exon 2 harbors up to 98% of these mutations. Variants in this gene play crucial roles in the progression of the disease, influencing its development, clinical manifestations, and treatment election. This study elucidates a 17% prevalence of mutations in KRAS exon 2 among western Mexican patients with sporadic CRC. Furthermore, a 30% pooled prevalence of mutations in KRAS exon 2 was determined after analyzing an additional 16 studies from Latin America, encompassing 12,604 CRC patients. Due to advances in precision medicine treatments, knowing the pathogenic status of the KRAS gene will become imperative to optimally select targeted therapies. We searched for the prevalence of actionable somatic mutations in exon 2 of the KRAS gene in western Mexican patients with CRC. Tumor tissue DNA samples from 150 patients with sporadic CRC recruited at the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara were analyzed. Mutations in exon 2 of the KRAS gene were identified using Sanger sequencing, and the data were analyzed considering clinical–pathological characteristics. Variants in codon 12 (rs121913529 G>A, G>C, and G>T) and codon 13 (rs112445441 G>A) were detected in 26 patients (with a prevalence of 17%). No significant associations were found between these variants and clinical–pathological characteristics (p > 0.05). Furthermore, a comprehensive search was carried out in PubMed/NCBI and Google for the prevalence of KRAS exon 2 mutations in Latin American populations. The 17 studies included 12,604 CRC patients, with an overall prevalence of 30% (95% CI = 0.26–0.35), although the prevalence ranged from 13 to 43% across the different data sources. Determining the variation and frequency of KRAS alleles in CRC patients will enhance their potential to receive targeted treatments and contribute to the understanding of the genomic profile of CRC. Peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6) is an atypical member of the peroxiredoxin family that presents not only peroxidase but also phospholipase A2 and lysophosphatidylcholine acyl transferase activities able to act on lipid hydroperoxides of cell membranes. It has been associated with the proliferation and invasive capacity of different tumoral cells including colorectal cancer cells, although the effect of its removal in these cells has not been yet studied. Here, using CRISPR/Cas9 technology, we constructed an HCT116 colorectal cancer cell line knockout for PRDX6 to study whether the mechanisms described for other cancer cells in terms of proliferation, migration, and invasiveness also apply in this tumoral cell line. HCT116 cells lacking PRDX6 showed increased ROS and lipid peroxidation, a decrease in the antioxidant response regulator NRF2, mitochondrial dysfunction, and increased sensitivity to ferroptosis. All these alterations lead to a decrease in proliferation, migration, and invasiveness in these cells. Furthermore, the reduced migratory and invasive capacity of HCT116 cancer cells is consistent with the observed cadherin switch and decrease in pro-invasive proteins such as MMPs. Therefore, the mechanism behind the effects of loss of PRDX6 in HCT116 cells could differ from that in HepG2 cells which is coherent with the fact that the correlation of PRDX6 expression with patient survival is different in hepatocellular carcinomas. Carbohydrates have a dietary role, but excessive consumption of high-calorie sugars can contribute to an increased incidence of metabolic diseases and dental caries. Recently, carbohydrates with sweetening properties and low caloric value, such as D-tagatose, have been investigated as alternative sugars. D-tagatose is a rare sugar that has nutritional and functional properties of great interest for health. This literature review presents an approach to the biological effects of D-tagatose, emphasizing its benefits for oral health. Studies report that D-tagatose has antioxidant and prebiotic effects, low digestibility, reduced glycemic and insulinemic responses, and the potential to improve the lipid profile, constituting an alternative for diabetes mellitus and obesity. It can also be observed that D-tagatose has an antioxidant action, favoring the elimination of free radicals and, consequently, causing a reduction in cellular oxidative stress. Furthermore, it also has antibacterial potential against oral species. Regarding oral health, studies have shown that D-tagatose efficiently reversed bacterial coaggregations, including periodontopathogenic species, and impaired the activity and growth of cariogenic bacteria, such as S. mutans. D-tagatose significantly inhibited biofilm formation, pH decrease and insoluble glucan synthesis in S. mutans cultures. Salivary S. mutans counts were also significantly reduced by the consumption of chewing gum containing D-tagatose and xylitol. In addition, there is evidence that tagatose is effective as an air-polishing powder for biofilm decontamination. Transhumance and its associated heritage are extremely complex and dynamic systems, and their conservation requires the analysis of interdisciplinary factors. To this end, fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) and Delphi surveys were applied for the first time in the field of heritage conservation. The model was applied to the tangible and intangible transhumance heritage of Andorra to determine its current state of conservation and to evaluate strategies for its preservation. Two panels of experts worked on the development of the model. Five experts with profiles related to conservation and transhumance heritage formed the first panel, which designed the preliminary FCMs, while seven experts in Andorran cultural heritage (panel 2) adapted the preliminary FCM model to Andorran transhumance heritage using Delphi surveys. The FCM model allowed us to analyze the influence of different variables on the conservation of transhumance heritage and to assess policy decisions. Further studies will focus on the implementation of this model in other countries to establish common recommendations for the conservation of the cultural heritage of transhumance. Genomic selection (GS) is a groundbreaking statistical machine learning method for advancing plant and animal breeding. Nonetheless, its practical implementation remains challenging due to numerous factors affecting its predictive performance. This research explores the potential of data augmentation to enhance prediction accuracy across entire datasets and specifically within the top 20% of the testing set. Our findings indicate that, overall, the data augmentation method (method A), when compared to the conventional model (method C) and assessed using Mean Arctangent Absolute Prediction Error (MAAPE) and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE), did not improve the prediction accuracy for the unobserved cultivars. However, significant improvements in prediction accuracy (evidenced by reduced prediction error) were observed when data augmentation was applied exclusively to the top 20% of the testing set. Specifically, reductions in MAAPE_20 and NRMSE_20 by 52.86% and 41.05%, respectively, were noted across various datasets. The semimembranosus muscle inserts into several tendons that are associated with some pathologies. Although ultrasound is useful for studying, diagnosing, and managing these pathologies, the correct interpretation of any images requires a clear knowledge of the related anatomical structures and the inter-related functions. We studied 38 cryopreserved non-paired knees from adult anatomical specimens and 4 non-paired knees from 29 to 38-week-old fetuses. The semimembranosus muscle and its tendons were located, observed, and injected under ultrasound guidance. The macroscopic anatomy was studied using dissection and anatomical cuts and the tendons were analyzed histologically. Measurements of muscle were taken 10 cm from the medial epicondyle and just before the tendon divided. The ultrasound facilitated the identification of the different divisions of the tendon of semimembranosus muscle and the rotation of the muscle and tendon from medial to posterior. An anatomical study confirmed this rotation and revealed an average width, thickness, and diameter of 38.29 mm, 14.36 mm, and 112.64 mm, respectively. Important relationships were observed between the divisions of the main tendons and the medial collateral ligament, the posterior side of the knee and popliteus muscle. Triacontanol is a long-chain primary alcohol derived from policosanol, known for its diverse biological activities, including functioning as a plant growth regulator and exhibiting anti-inflammatory and antitumoral effects. However, its application is limited due to its high hydrophobicity, resulting in poor absorption and reduced therapeutic effectiveness. A potential solution to this problem is the use of niosomes. Niosomes are carriers composed of non-ionic surfactants, cholesterol, charge-inducing agents, and a hydration medium. They are effective in encapsulating drugs, improving their solubility and bioavailability. The objective of this study was to optimize and synthesize nano-niosomes for the encapsulation of triacontanol. Niosomes were synthesized using a thin-film hydration method combined with ultrasonication, following a Box–Behnken design. Niosomes were characterized using various techniques including dynamic light scattering, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), confocal microscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Formulation 14 of niosomes achieved the desired size, polydispersity index (0.198 ± 0.008), and zeta potential (−31.28 ± 1.21). FTIR analysis revealed a characteristic signal in the 3400–300 cm−1 range, indicating intermolecular interactions due to a bifurcated hydrogen bond between cholesterol and S60. Fifth-generation mobile networks (5G) are designed to support enhanced Mobile Broadband, Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications, and massive Machine-Type Communications. To meet these diverse needs, 5G uses technologies like network softwarization, network slicing, and artificial intelligence. Multi-connectivity is crucial for boosting mobile device performance by using different Wireless Access Technologies (WATs) simultaneously, enhancing throughput, reducing latency, and improving reliability. This paper presents a multi-connectivity testbed from the 5G-CLARITY project for performance evaluation. MultiPath TCP (MPTCP) was employed to enable mobile devices to send data through various WATs simultaneously. A new MPTCP scheduler was developed, allowing operators to better control traffic distribution across different technologies and maximize aggregated throughput. Our proposal mitigates the impact of limitations on one path affecting others, avoiding the Head-of-Line blocking problem. Performance was tested with real equipment using 5GNR, Wi-Fi, and LiFi —complementary WATs in the 5G-CLARITY project—in both static and dynamic scenarios. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheduler can manage the traffic distribution across different WATs and achieve the combined capacities of these technologies, approximately 1.4 Gbps in our tests, outperforming the other MPTCP schedulers. This work aims to develop and validate a framework for the multiscale simulation of the biological response to ionizing radiation in a population of cells forming a tissue. We present TOPAS-Tissue, a framework to allow coupling two Monte Carlo (MC) codes: TOPAS with the TOPAS-nBio extension, capable of handling the track-structure simulation and subsequent chemistry, and CompuCell3D, an agent-based model simulator for biological and environmental behavior of a population of cells. We verified the implementation by simulating the experimental conditions for a clonogenic survival assay of a 2-D PC-3 cell culture model (10 cells in 10,000 µm2) irradiated by MV X-rays at several absorbed dose values from 0–8 Gy. The simulation considered cell growth and division, irradiation, DSB induction, DNA repair, and cellular response. The survival was obtained by counting the number of colonies, defined as a surviving primary (or seeded) cell with progeny, at 2.7 simulated days after irradiation. DNA repair was simulated with an MC implementation of the two-lesion kinetic model and the cell response with a p53 protein-pulse model. The simulated survival curve followed the theoretical linear–quadratic response with dose. The fitted coefficients α = 0.280 ± 0.025/Gy and β = 0.042 ± 0.006/Gy2 agreed with published experimental data within two standard deviations. TOPAS-Tissue extends previous works by simulating in an end-to-end way the effects of radiation in a cell population, from irradiation and DNA damage leading to the cell fate. In conclusion, TOPAS-Tissue offers an extensible all-in-one simulation framework that successfully couples Compucell3D and TOPAS for multiscale simulation of the biological response to radiation. Simple Summary: Recently, CMTM6 has been found to stabilize PD-L1 on the plasma membrane of some tumor cells, favoring tumor immune system evasion. Until the present, it was unknown whether this protein could be present in a soluble form in the plasma of patients with cervical cancer (CC) or, additionally, if it could be found in atypical subcellular compartments in cell lines derived from CC. The results of our present research confirm that CMTM6 is increased in the plasma of patients with CC and associated, but not exclusively so, with exosomes, and that exosomal CMTM6 levels are correlated with exosomal PD-L1 levels. In addition, in CC cell lines, CMTM6 was found to be secreted and present both on the membrane and intracellularly. CMTM6 derived from CC in soluble, exosomal membrane and intracellular forms could have an impact on the biology of tumor cells by affecting the expression of molecules associated with tumor development and progression, such as PD-L1. CMTM6 is a membrane protein that acts as a regulator of PD-L1, maintaining its expression on the cell surface, and can prevent its lysosome-mediated degradation. It is unknown if CMTM6 is present in the plasma of patients with cervical cancer, and if it has non-canonical subcellular localizations in cell lines derived from cervical cancer. Our objective was to determine whether CMTM6 is found in plasma derived from cervical cancer patients and its subcellular localization in cell lines. Patient plasma was separated into exosome-enriched, exosome-free, and total plasma fractions. The levels of CMTM6 in each fraction were determined using ELISA and Western blot. Finally, for the cellular model, HeLa, SiHa, CaSki, and HaCaT were used; the subcellular locations of CMTM6 were determined using immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. Soluble CMTM6 was found to be elevated in plasma from patients with cervical cancer, with a nearly three-fold increase in patients (966.27 pg/mL in patients vs. 363.54 pg/mL in controls). CMTM6 was preferentially, but not exclusively, found in the exosome-enriched plasma fraction, and was positively correlated with exosomal PD-L1; CMTM6 was identified in the membrane, intracellular compartments, and culture supernatant of the cell lines. Sesame seeds and their edible oil are highly nutritious and rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Bioactive compounds such as sterols, tocopherols, and sesamol provide significant medicinal benefits. The high oil content (50%) and favorable mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acid balance, as well as resilience to water stress, make sesame a promising candidate crop for global agricultural expansion. However, sesame production faces challenges such as low yields, poor response to agricultural inputs, and losses due to capsule dehiscence. To enhance yield, traits like determinate growth, dwarfism, a high harvest index, non-shattering capsules, disease resistance, and photoperiod sensitivity are needed. These traits can be achieved through variation or induced mutation breeding. Crossbreeding methods often result in unwanted genetic changes. The gene editing CRISPR/Cas9 technology has the potential to suppress detrimental alleles and improve the fatty acid profile by inhibiting polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis. Even though sesame is an orphan crop, it has entered the genomic era, with available sequences assisting molecular breeding efforts. This progress aids in associating single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and simple sequence repeats (SSR) with key economic traits, as well as identifying genes related to adaptability, oil production, fatty acid synthesis, and photosynthesis. Additionally, transcriptomic research can reveal genes involved in abiotic stress responses and adaptation to diverse climates. The mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) can identify loci linked to key traits such as capsule size, seed count per capsule, and capsule number per plant. This article reviews recent advances in sesame breeding, discusses ongoing challenges, and explores potential strategies for future improvement. Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of death from tumors in women worldwide, influenced by various factors, including genetics. The T allele of the single nucleotide variant (SNV) rs3025039 at position +936 of the VEGFA gene has been reported to affect the mRNA regulatory mechanisms, potentially altering VEGFA expression and increasing BC risk. This study aimed to investigate the association between rs3025039 and BC in Mexican women residing in Jalisco, Mexico. The study included 231 women with a confirmed diagnosis of BC and 201 healthy subjects as a reference group (RG). PCR–RFLP was employed for the genotyping of rs3025039, with the visualization of amplified products using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Significant differences were observed in rs3025039 alleles and genotypes between BC cases and the RG (p = 0.0038). The frequency of the T allele and the CT genotype was higher in the BC group compared to the RG, with a significant difference (p = 0.0006). In conclusion, this research suggests that the SNV rs3025039 is associated with a higher risk of BC in Mexican women. Background/Objectives: Metrics drive diagnosis, and metrics will also drive our response to the challenge of climate change. Recognising how current scientific research defines and uses metrics of the environmental impact of human diets is essential to understand which foods, food groups, or dietary patterns are associated with a higher environmental impact. Methods: This research, aided by artificial intelligence (AI), aimed to search, map, and synthesise current evidence on the commonly used definitions and metrics of the environmental impacts of human diets. Results: We identified 466 studies measuring the environmental impact of diets. Most studies were from North American or European countries (67%), with data mainly from high-income countries (81%). Most studies did not include methods to recall the provenance of the foods consumed. Most (53%) of the studies only used one metric to estimate the environmental impact of human diets, with 82% of the studies using GHGE. Conclusions: Agreement on how the environmental impact of diets is measured and more comprehensive and accurate data on the environmental impact of single foods is essential to better understand what changes in food systems are needed, at a consumer and policy level, to make a well-meaning change towards a more sustainable diet. (1) The main aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of the Mediterranean diet (MD) with vascular function in participants with and without increased insulin resistance (IR) in the Spanish population. A secondary aim was to study differences by gender. (2) Methods: Data were analyzed from 3401 subjects in the EVA, MARK, and EVIDENT studies (mean age = 60 years and 57% men). IR was evaluated with the triglyceride and glucose index (TyG index). TyG index = Ln [(fasting triglyceride mg/dL × fasting glucose mg/dL)/2]. The MD was measured against the MEDAS questionnaire, with the 14 items used in the PREDIMED study. Vascular stiffness was estimated with the brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and the cardio ankle vascular index (CAVI) using the Vasera VS-1500®. (3) Results: The mean MEDAS value was 5.82 ± 2.03; (men: 5.66 ± 2.06; women: 6.04 ± 1.99; p < 0.001). MD adherence was 36.8% (men: 34.2%; women: 40.3%; p < 0.001). The mean baPWV value was 14.39 ± 2.78; (men: 14.50 ± 2.65; women: 14.25 ± 2.93; p = 0.005). A baPWV value ≥ 14.5 m/s was found in 43.4% (men: 43.6%; women: 40.0%; p = 0.727). The mean CAVI value was 8.59 ± 1.28; (men: 8.75 ± 1.28; women: 8.37 ± 1.26; p < 0.001). CAVI values ≥ 9 were present in 39.0% (men: 44.4%; women: 31.7%; p < 0.001). The mean value of the TGC/G index was 10.93 ± 1.39; (men: 11.08 ± 1.33; women: 10.73 ± 1.43; p < 0.001). IR was found in 49.9%. The average value of the MD score value was negatively associated with baPWV and CAVI in all groups analyzed (<0.05), except in the group of women with insulin resistance. (4) Conclusions: The results suggest that MD adherence is negatively associated with the vascular stiffness parameters analyzed in all the groups studied except the group of women with insulin resistance. Coarse- or fine-wheat-bran inclusion or stimbiotic inclusion increased the feed intake and FCR for younger broilers; however, fine wheat bran and stimbiotic inclusion increased the overall weight gain of broilers without influencing their feed intake and FCR. Fine-wheat-bran inclusion increased the jejunum villi height and ileal nutrient digestibility compared to coarse wheat bran or diets without wheat bran in broilers at day 18. Stimbiotic supplementation increased ileal nutrient digestibility at day 42. The particle size of the wheat bran or stimbiotic supplementation had no effects on the cecal total short-chain fatty acid concentration; however, stimbiotic supplementation or wheat bran inclusion tended to decrease the branched-chain fatty acid concentration. Stimbiotic supplementation and inclusion of wheat bran with a reduced particle size into broiler diets have beneficial effects on the overall performance and ileal nutrient digestibility. A 42-day study was conducted with 720-day-old Cobb male broiler chicks allocated to treatments in a 3 × 2 factorial, with the factors as wheat bran (WB) inclusion (no WB, 50 g/kg coarse WB, or 50 g/kg fine WB) and stimbiotic (STB) supplementation in corn-based diets. The inclusion of WB (p < 0.05) or STB supplementation (p < 0.05) increased the FCR and feed intake in the day 0–10 phase. During the day 0–28 phase, coarse-WB inclusion increased (p < 0.05) the FCR, compared to fine WB or diets without WB. In the day 0–42 phase, WB marginally decreased weight gain in diets without STB supplementation, but the STB-supplemented diet, weight gain was greater (p < 0.05) the diet with fine WB compared with diets with coarse WB. Fine-WB inclusion increased the ileal nitrogen and energy digestibility determined at day 18 compared to coarse WB or diets without WB. Supplementation with STB (p < 0.05) or fine WB (p < 0.05) inclusion increased the villi height compared to diets without STB supplementation or coarse WB, or the diet without WB. Coarse or fine WB decreased (p < 0.05) cecal branched-chain fatty acids compared to diets without WB. In conclusion, stimbiotic supplementation to fine WB improved the performance and nutrient digestibility of broilers compared to coarse WB with no effects on the caeca total SCFA concentration. Background: Autologous fat grafting, enriched with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), has been established as an effective and affordable treatment for various types of wound healing. However, its efficacy in managing wounds with tendon exposure has not been thoroughly investigated. Methods: We report the case of a 40-year-old male who sustained a severe friction burn on his hand and forearm from a car accident, resulting in significant tissue loss and exposed extensor tendons. Results: Traditional wound treatment strategies were not implemented due to specific patient circumstances. After initial surgical management failed to prevent necrosis and maintain coverage of the exposed tendons, the patient underwent a novel treatment involving autologous fat grafting combined with PRP and growth factors. The procedure was repeated twice within a month to promote granular tissue formation over that area and facilitate subsequent coverage with an epidermoreticular graft. By day 21 post-initial graft, the exposed tendons were 98% covered with granular tissue. Complete wound coverage was achieved by day 60, and by day 130 the patient had regained 90% functionality of the affected limbs. Conclusions: This case illustrates the potential of autologous fat grafting combined with PRP and growth factors as a viable, flap-free alternative for covering tendon exposures. Background: The goal is to analyze the need for reinterventions under deep sedation to treat oral pathologies in a population of children with special health care needs (SHCNs) and healthy children who followed a prevention program and to study the influence of parental motivation and child collaboration on the need for reinterventions under deep sedation. Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in a private clinic in Cartagena (Murcia, Spain), with patients treated under deep sedation from 2006 to 2018, both years included, following the Strobe statement. Results: In this study with 230 children who were treated under deep sedation, 23.92% underwent two or more sedations. The mean time elapsed between the first and the second sedations was 21.64 ± 15.87 months, and the main cause for reinterventions was the occurrence of new pathologies. Significantly more pulp treatments were performed in the first sedation than in the second (p = 0.013) and in the third (p = 0.007). Healthy children required fewer reinterventions under deep sedation than children with special needs (6.42% vs. 39.67%). Similarly, patients who followed the preventive program and required some type of dental treatment were reoperated fewer times than those who did not follow the preventive program (35.8 vs. 50%); than "cooperative" children as opposed to "non-cooperative" (12.12% vs. 60.93%) and than patients with "motivated" parents as opposed to those with "non-motivated" parents (20.83% vs. 46.34%). A total of 50% of the children who participated in the preventive program became "cooperative", and 100% were able to receive some treatment in the dental chair. Conclusions: Prevention programs, including motivational interviewing, are essential to improve children's behavior in the dental chair and reduce the need for reinterventions under general anesthesia or deep sedation. Although patients with special needs do require more sedation during their lifetime due to their inability to cooperate, these programs are necessary for the maintenance of oral health status and for the early diagnosis of caries lesions. SfM (structure from motion) photogrammetry is a technique developed in the field of computer vision that enables the generation of three-dimensional (3D) models from a set of overlapping images captured from disparate angles. The application of this technique in the field of cultural heritage, particularly in the context of megalithic monuments, is inherently challenging due to the spatial constraints of these environments and the usual limitations posed by their architectural design, which often results in poor lighting conditions. This article presents an accurate and cost-efficient methodology for the study and documentation of rock art, which has been applied to three megalithic monuments in the Iberian Peninsula: one in Spain and two in Portugal. The three working environments are complex, but the combination of techniques used and improvements such as rendering for the enhancement of engravings and the creation of 3D stop-motion models made it possible to integrate all the information in 3D formats that allow its universal dissemination. Three-phase induction motors play a key role in industrial operations. However, their failure can result in serious operational problems. This study focuses on the early identification of faults through the accurate diagnosis and classification of faults in three-phase induction motors using artificial intelligence techniques by analyzing current, temperature, and vibration signals. Experiments were conducted on a test bench, simulating real operating conditions, including stator phase unbalance, bearing damage, and shaft unbalance. To classify the faults, an Auto-Regressive Neural Network with Exogenous Inputs (NARX) was developed. The parameters of this network were determined through a process of selecting the best network by using the scanning method with multiple training and validation iterations with the introduction of new data. The results of these tests showed that the network exhibited excellent generalization across all evaluated situations, achieving the following accuracy rates: motor without fault = 94.2 %, unbalanced fault = 95%, bearings with fault = 98%, and stator with fault = 95%. This paper presents an actuator fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy for a hexacopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed specifically for precision agriculture applications. The proposed approach integrates advanced sensing techniques, including the estimation of Near-Infrared (NIR) reflectance from RGB imagery using the Pix2Pix deep learning network based on conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs), to enable the calculation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for health assessment. Additionally, trajectory flight planning is developed to ensure the efficient coverage of the targeted agricultural area while considering the vehicle's dynamics and fault-tolerant capabilities, even in the case of total actuator failures. The increasing threat from antibiotic-resistant bacteria has necessitated the development of novel methods to counter bacterial infections. In this context, the application of metallic nanoparticles (NPs), especially gold (Au) and silver (Ag), has emerged as a promising strategy due to their remarkable antibacterial properties. This review examines research published between 2006 and 2023, focusing on leading journals in nanotechnology, materials science, and biomedical research. The primary applications explored are the efficacy of Ag and Au NPs as antibacterial agents, their synthesis methods, morphological properties, and mechanisms of action. An extensive review of the literature on NPs synthesis, morphology, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and effectiveness against various Gram(+/−) bacteria confirms the antibacterial efficacy of Au and Ag NPs. The synthesis methods and characteristics of NPs, such as size, shape, and surface charge, are crucial in determining their antibacterial activity, as these factors influence their interactions with bacterial cells. Furthermore, this review underscores the urgent necessity of standardizing synthesis techniques, MICs, and reporting protocols to enhance the comparability and reproducibility of future studies. Standardization is essential for ensuring the reliability of research findings and accelerating the clinical application of NP-based antimicrobial approaches. Kefir has been associated with beneficial effects on its host's health. The previous works examining the impact of kefir on the immune system focused on milk kefir or the exopolysaccharides and bacterial strains derived from it, while water kefir has not been evaluated. Furthermore, studies have focused on kefir's ability to modulate immune system hemostasis and exert anti-inflammatory effects, while its specific action on antiviral immunity has not been investigated. Thus, the aim of this work was to examine the potential immunomodulatory effects of water kefir on the intestinal innate antiviral immunity mediated by Toll-like receptor-3 (TLR3). Adult BALB/c mice fed water kefir ad libitum, diluted 1:5, 1:10, or 1:20 in the drinking water, for 6 consecutive days. On day 7, the treated groups and the untreated control mice received an intraperitoneal injection of the TLR3 agonist poly(I:C). Two days after the TLR3 activation, the intestinal damage and the innate immune response were studied. The intraperitoneal administration of poly(I:C) induced inflammatory-mediated intestinal tissue damage, characterized by the upregulation of interferons (IFNs), pro-inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-15, IL-6), and factors involved in epithelial destruction (RAE-1 and NKG2D). The histological analysis of small intestinal samples showed that mice receiving water kefir 1:5 exhibited reduced edema and a lower inflammatory cell infiltration. Kefir-treated mice had significantly lower levels of serum LDH, AST, and ALT as well as intestinal TNF-α, IL-15, IL-6, RAE-1, and NKG2D. This group also showed higher concentrations of intestinal IFN-β, IFN-γ, and IL-10. The treatment with 1:10 of water kefir reduced intestinal damage and modulated cytokines but its effect was significantly lower than the 1:5 treatment, while the water kefir 1:20 did not modify the parameters evaluated compared to control mice. The results indicate that water kefir exerts its immunomodulatory effects in a dose-dependent manner. The in vivo studies allow us to speculate that water kefir can induce two beneficial effects on the intestinal TLR3-mediated immune response: the enhancement of antiviral defenses and the protection against the inflammatory-mediated tissue damage. These protective effects of water kefir require further exploration to understand how water kefir, or its specific molecules/strains, can influence the immune response and to determine the extent of its protection against a real viral challenge. Listeria pathogenicity island 1 (LIPI-1) is a genetic region containing a cluster of genes essential for virulence of the bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes. Main virulence factors in LIPI-1 include long 5′ untranslated regions (5′UTRs), among which is Rli51, a small RNA (sRNA) in the 5′UTR of the Zn-metalloprotease-coding mpl. So far, Rli51 function and molecular mechanisms have remained obscure. Here, we show that Rli51 exhibits a dual mechanism of regulation, functioning as a cis- and as a trans-acting sRNA. Under nutrient-rich conditions, rli51-mpl transcription is prematurely terminated, releasing a short 121-nucleotide-long sRNA. Rli51 is predicted to function as a transcription attenuator that can fold into either a terminator or a thermodynamically more stable antiterminator. We show that the sRNA Rli21/RliI binds to a single-stranded RNA loop in Rli51, which is essential to mediate premature transcription termination, suggesting that sRNA binding could stabilize the terminator fold. During intracellular infection, rli51 transcription is increased, which generates a higher abundance of the short Rli51 sRNA and allows for transcriptional read-through into mpl. Comparative intracellular bacterial transcriptomics in rli51-null mutants and the wild-type reference strain EGD-e suggests that Rli51 upregulates iron-scavenging proteins and downregulates virulence factors from LIPI-1. MS2 affinity purification confirmed that Rli51 binds transcripts of the heme-binding protein Lmo2186 and Lmo0937 in vivo. These results prove that Rli51 functions as a trans-acting sRNA in intracellular bacteria. Our research shows a growth condition-dependent mechanism of regulation for Rli51, preventing unintended mpl transcription in extracellular bacteria and regulating genes important for virulence in intracellular bacteria. This work describes an automated pilot plant for the extraction of rare-earth (RE) permanent magnets from computer hard-disk drives (HDDs), demonstrating a commercially viable way to exploit these abundant sources of end-of-life (EOL) magnets. A mobile approach is provided for the on-site destruction of the HDDs in server farms, in compliance with the European Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), enabling both separation of the magnets and automated shredding of the data carrier. This fully automated process identifies (both optically and magnetically) the location of the rare-earth magnets and cuts off the corner of the hard drive containing the rare-earth material in the voice coil motor. This allows for a significant reduction in magnet extraction time (6 s per HDD) compared to previously reported semi-automated (2 min) and manual (5 min) dismantling times. The coastal region of the Caribbean is notable for the chemical diversity found in its sponge products, resulting in the biosynthesis of a range of natural marine products, including polyketides. The objective of this manuscript is to summarize the isolated polyketides from sponges of the genus Plakortis located around the Caribbean coasts. This review provides a comprehensive overview of specimen location, isolation procedures, characterization methods, and biological assay studies of about 95 polyketides isolated from 1978 to 2024 in the Caribbean coasts of The Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Belize, Dominica, Jamaica, Martinique, Panamá, Puerto Rico, and Tobago. The Caribbean polyketides have been isolated from different types of Plakortis sp., such as P. simplex, P. halichondroides, P. zyggompha, and P. angulospiculatus, which have demonstrated antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, and antiviral activities. A variety of linear polyketides with different functionalities have been reported, including endoperoxides (1,2-dioxane), lactones, indane-type bicyclics (spiculane and zyggomphic), alcohols, alkenes, styryl groups, α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids, and ketones, as well as related natural products of biosynthetic origin. The aim is to encourage further exploration by researchers in the Caribbean's coastal marine environments, promoting the discovery and investigation of novel polyketide cyclic peroxides and related secondary metabolites to identify additional bioactive medicinal natural products. The quality of okra is crucial in satisfying consumer expectations, and the tenderness of okra is an essential parameter in estimating its condition. However, the current methods for assessing okra tenderness are slow and prone to errors, necessitating the development of a better, non-destructive method. The objective of the present study is to develop and test a non-destructive robotic sensor for assessing okra freshness and tenderness. A total of 120 pods were divided into two sets and stored under different conditions: 60 pods were kept in a cold chamber for 24 h (considered tender), while the other 60 pods were stored at room temperature for two days. First, the samples were assessed non-destructively using the force sensor of a collaborative robot, where a jamming pad (with internal granular fill) was capable of adapting and copying the okra shapes while controlling its force deformation. Second, the okra pods were evaluated with the referenced destructive tests, as well as weight loss, compression, and puncture tests. In order to validate the differences in the tenderness of the two sets, a discriminant analysis was carried out to segregate the okra pods into the two categories according to the destructive variables, confirming the procedure which was followed to produce tender and non-tender okra pods. After the differences in the tenderness of the two sets were confirmed, the variables extracted from the robotic sensor (maximum force (Fmax), first slope (S1), second slope (S2), the first overshoot (Os), and the steady state (Ss)) were significant predictors for the separation in the two quality categories. Discriminant analysis and logistic regression methods were applied to classify the pods into the two tenderness categories. Promising results were obtained using neural network classification with 80% accuracy in predicting tenderness from the sensor data, and a 95.5% accuracy rate was achieved in distinguishing between tender and non-tender okra pods in the validation data set. The use of the robotic sensor could be an efficient tool in evaluating the quality of okra. Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium responsible for Lyme disease, has been shown to form antimicrobial-tolerant biofilms, which protect it from unfavorable conditions. Bacterial biofilms are known to significantly contribute to severe inflammation, such as carditis, a common manifestation of Lyme disease. However, the role of B. burgdorferi biofilms in the development of Lyme carditis has not been thoroughly investigated due to the absence of an appropriate model system. In this study, we examined heart tissues from mice infected with B. burgdorferi for the presence of biofilms and inflammatory markers using immunohistochemistry (IHC), combined fluorescence in situ hybridization FISH/IHC, 3D microscopy, and atomic force microscopy techniques. Our results reveal that B. burgdorferi spirochetes form aggregates with a known biofilm marker (alginate) in mouse heart tissues. Furthermore, these biofilms induce inflammation, as indicated by elevated levels of murine C-reactive protein near the biofilms. This research provides evidence that B. burgdorferi can form biofilms in mouse heart tissue and trigger inflammatory processes, suggesting that the mouse model is a valuable tool for future studies on B. burgdorferi biofilms. The dry forests of southern Ecuador are characterized by a great floristic variety and high endemism rates in different taxonomic groups; however, these forests are disappearing at an alarming rate due to anthropogenic disturbances. Epiphytic cryptogams (bryophytes and lichens) are important in seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) and, due to their physiology (poikilohydric species), are sensitive to the changes associated with specific human disturbances. We examined the response of epiphytic cryptogams to habitat disturbance in SDTFs (natural and semi-natural forests) by registering the frequency and coverage of epiphytic cryptogams on 182 trees. We recorded a total of 53 epiphytic cryptogams (47 lichens and 6 bryophytes). A greater number of species was found in the natural forest, with 51 species, than the semi-natural forests (DFs), which had 45 species. We found that total richness tended to decrease with increased intensity of disturbance. The impoverishment was particularly related to the reduction in tree density and diversity (e.g., selective logging) in semi-natural compared to natural forests. However, the epiphytic composition showed little relationship with forests disturbance. We conclude that anthropic disturbance, particularly selective logging, are the main factors affecting the diversity of epiphytic cryptogams in the SDTFs from southern Ecuador. This paper deals with the design and kinematic analysis of a novel mechanism for the elbow joint of an upper-limb exoskeleton, with the aim of helping operators, in terms of effort and physical resistance, in carrying out heavy operations. In particular, the proposed eight-bar elbow joint exoskeleton mechanism consists of a motorized Watt I six-bar linkage and a suitable RP dyad, which connects mechanically the external parts of the human arm with the corresponding forearm by hook and loop velcro, thus helping their closing relative motion for lifting objects during repetitive and heavy operations. This relative motion is not a pure rotation, and thus the upper part of the exoskeleton is fastened to the arm, while the lower part is not rigidly connected to the forearm but through a prismatic pair that allows both rotation and sliding along the forearm axis. Instead, the human arm is sketched by means of a crossed four-bar linkage, which coupler link is considered as attached to the glyph of the prismatic pair, which is fastened to the forearm. Therefore, the kinematic analysis of the whole ten-bar mechanism, which is obtained by joining the Watt I six-bar linkage and the RP dyad to the crossed four-bar linkage, is formulated to investigate the main kinematic performance and for design purposes. The proposed algorithm has given several numerical and graphical results. Finally, a double-parallelogram linkage, as in the particular case of the Watt I six-bar linkage, was considered in combination with the RP dyad and the crossed four-bar linkage by giving a first mechanical design and a 3D-printed prototype. Tropical forests are incredibly diverse in structure and function. Despite, or perhaps because of, this diversity, tropical biologists often conduct research exclusively in one or perhaps a few forest types. Rarely do we study the ecotone—the interstitial region between forest types. Ecotones are hyper-diverse, dynamic systems that control the flow of energy and organisms between adjacent ecosystems, with their locations determined by species' physiological limits. In this review, we describe how studying ecotones can provide key indicators for monitoring the state of Neotropical forests from organisms to ecosystems. We first describe how ecotones have been studied in the past and summarize our current understanding of tropical ecotones. Next, we provide three example lines of research focusing on the ecological and evolutionary dynamics of the ecotone between tropical dry forests and desert; between tropical dry and rainforests; and between Cerrado and Atlantic rainforests, with the latter being a particularly well-studied ecotone. Lastly, we outline methods and tools for studying ecotones that combine remote sensing, new statistical techniques, and field-based forest dynamics plot data, among others, for understanding these important systems. Extreme rainfall events in Andean basins frequently trigger landslides, obstructing river channels and causing flash flows, loss of lives, and economic damage. This study focused on improving the modeling of these events to enhance risk management, specifically in the La Liboriana basin in Salgar (Colombia). A cascading modeling methodology was developed, integrating the spatially distributed rainfall intensities, hazard zoning with the SLIDE model, propagation modeling with RAMMS using calibrated soil rheological parameters, the distributed hydrological model TETIS, and flood mapping with IBER. Return periods of 2.33, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years were defined and applied throughout the methodology. A specific extreme event (18 May 2015) was modeled for calibration and comparison. The spatial rainfall intensities indicated maximum concentrations in the northwestern upper basin and southeastern lower basin. Six landslide hazard maps were generated, predicting landslide-prone areas with a slightly above random prediction rate for the 2015 event. The RAMMS debris flow modeling involved 30 simulations, indicating significant deposition within the river channel and modifying the terrain. Hydraulic modeling with the IBER model revealed water heights ranging from 0.23 to 7 m and velocities from 0.34 m/s to 6.98 m/s, with urban areas showing higher values, indicating increased erosion and infrastructure damage potential. The complement system and neutrophils play crucial roles in innate immunity. Neutrophils release neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which are composed of decondensed DNA entangled with granular contents, as part of their innate immune function. Mechanisms governing complement-mediated NET formation remain unclear. In this study, we tested a two-step NETosis mechanism, as follows: classical complement-mediated neutrophil activation in serum and subsequent NET formation in serum-free conditions, using neutrophils from healthy donors, endothelial cells, and various assays (Fluo-4AM, DHR123, and SYTOX), along with flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Our findings reveal that classical complement activation on neutrophils upregulated the membrane-anchored complement regulators CD46, CD55, and CD59. Additionally, complement activation increased CD11b on neutrophils, signifying activation and promoting their attachment to endothelial cells. Complement activation induced calcium influx and citrullination of histone 3 (CitH3) in neutrophils. However, CitH3 formation alone was insufficient for NET generation. Importantly, NET formation occurred only when neutrophils were in serum-free conditions. In such environments, neutrophils induced NADPH oxidase-dependent reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, leading to NET formation. Hence, we propose that complement-mediated NET formation involves a two-step process, as follows: complement deposition, neutrophil priming, calcium influx, CitH3 formation, and attachment to endothelial cells in serum. This is followed by NADPH-dependent ROS production and NET completion in serum-free conditions. Agriculture drones face important challenges regarding autonomy and construction, as flying time below the 9-minute mark is the norm, and their manufacture requires several tests and research before reaching proper flight dynamics. Therefore, correct design, analysis, and manufacture of the structure are imperative to address the aforementioned problems and ensure a robust build that withstands the tough environments of this application. In this work, the analysis and implementation of a Nylamid motor bracket, aluminum sandwich-type skeleton, and carbon fiber tube arm in a 30 kg agriculture drone is presented. The mechanical response of these components is evaluated using the finite element method in ANSYS Workbench, and the material behavior assumptions are assessed using a universal testing machine before their implementations. The general description of these models and the numerical results are presented. This early prediction of the behavior of the structure allows for mass optimization and cost reductions. The fast dynamics of drone applications set important restrictions in ductile materials such as this, requiring extensive structural analysis before manufacture. Experimental and numerical results showed a maximum variation of 8.7% for the carbon fiber composite and 13% for the Nylamid material. The mechanical properties of polyamide nylon allowed for a 51% mass reduction compared to a 6061 aluminum alloy structure optimized for the same load case in the motor brackets design. The low mechanical complexity of sandwich-type skeletons translated into fast implementation. Nonspecific lower back pain is one of the main health issues experienced by nonprofessional caregivers of dependent individuals. The repetitive movements and efforts made by caregivers to assist dependent individuals are associated with the onset of this lower back pain. The main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention for the management of nonspecific lower back pain in nonprofessional caregivers of dependent individuals (TRANSFE program). The secondary objectives were to (i) evaluate the effectiveness of the TRANSFE program on other variables (caregiver burden, perceived social support, and health-related quality of life), (ii) obtain the sociodemographic profile of the sample, and (iii) determine the baseline of the study variables. A quasi-experimental study with post-intervention measurements at 3 months was conducted. Thirty-six nonprofessional caregivers of dependent individuals participated in this study. The presence of lower back pain (back pain index), low back pain (visual analogue scale), disability due to low back pain (Oswestry disability index), perceived social support (Duke-UNK scale), caregiver burden (Zarit burden scale), and health-related quality of life (EuroQol-5D) were assessed. The intervention significantly improved all the studied variables related to lower back pain (p < 0.001). The intervention was effective on other variables related to nonprofessional caregiving such as caregiver burden, perceived social support, and health-related quality of life, albeit with moderate results. An educational intervention for lower back pain experienced by caregivers of dependent individuals was effective in reducing lower back pain and addressing caregiver burden, perceived social support, and health-related quality of life. Meat products containing Vitamin D3 (VD3) are an innovative option that could contribute to reducing deficiencies in this micronutrient. Designing nanoemulsions that carry VD3 is the first step in developing functional meat products. Thereby, this study investigated the impact of food components on the nanoemulsion properties. A central composite design was used to study the effects of pea protein (PP, 0.5–2.5%), safflower oil (SO, 5–15%), and salt (0–0.5%) on the nanoemulsion stability (ζ-potential and particle size) and the VD3 retention. Also, the optimized nanoemulsion carrying VD3 was incorporated into a meat matrix to study its retention after cooking. The combination of food components in the optimized nanoemulsion were SO = 9.12%, PP = 1.54%, and salt content = 0.4%, resulting in the predicted values of ζ-potential, particle size, and VD3 retention of −37.76 mV, 485 nm, and 55.1%, respectively. The VD3 that was nanoencapsulated and included in a meat product remained more stable after cooking than the VD3 that was not encapsulated. If a meat product is formulated with 5 or 10% safflower oil, the stability of the nanoencapsulated VD3 is reduced.
