With the rapid development of the electronic information industry, more and more attention has been paid to piezoelectric ceramic materials, but the electrical properties and characteristics of piezoelectric ceramic materials have problems such as high cost and inconvenient measurement. In this paper, a new method of electroinduced strain measurement of piezoelectric ceramics is proposed, and an innovative measuring device is constructed based on the working mode and testing principle of an optical displacement sensor and piezoelectric ceramics. An optical displacement measuring device with a simple structure, convenient operation, high measurement accuracy, and good cost benefit was designed and manufactured, and the electroinduced strain performance of piezoelectric ceramics was effectively measured. It is verified by experimental analysis that the device can accurately measure the axial displacement of various piezoelectric ceramics, the measurement accuracy is comparable to the existing equipment, the error is less than 10%, and has good stability and repeatability, which provides a reliable technical means for the performance measurement of piezoelectric ceramics. The application of coal technologies for energy generation leads to high pollutant emissions. Thus, governmental and international organizations have created new programs and laws for monitoring emissions. Recently, the government of Kazakhstan has introduced regulations for the measurement of emissions produced by factories and power plants. However, the requirements and Corecommendations for the monitoring methods have not been defined. Therefore, this article addresses the problem and focuses on determining the measurement errors made by optical SGK510 and electrochemical POLAR devices used for coal power plants. The hypothesis is based on the fact that there are currently no systems for monitoring probe drying, and its implementation is expensive. The main methods are analyzed, namely their operation, taking into account the presence of water particles in samples, and the possibility of using adjustment coefficients is considered. The main pollutants chosen for analysis are CO, NO, NO2, NOx, SO2, and O2. Using the Broich–Pagan test, homoscedasticity was determined, and the Fisher test showed the possibility of using tuning coefficients. The data for the optical method were compared to measurements taken using Inspector 500. The error for SO2 determination was 7.19% for NO, 44.0985% for NO2, 733.26% for NOx, 7.39% for O2, 2.75% for CO, 60.81%. The comparison between SGK510 and POLAR demonstrated the following errors: for CO—1.5%, for NOx—82.4405%, for SO2—41.17%, for O2—11.61%. According to the Fisher criteria analysis of the optical method, only SO2 and CO values measured by SGK510 in comparison to Inspector 500 had close similarity, while others demonstrated high deviations. The significance tests were carried out by Fisher's, t-test, and ANOVA methods. For the electrochemical measurement, only CO values had close similarity. In the future, methods will be proposed to improve the accuracy of the system while reducing maintenance costs, as well as cleaning sampling systems. Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) has attracted much attention from researchers due to its high accuracy, high efficiency, and strong adaptability. In SIM, demodulation is a key point to recovering three-dimensional topography, which directly affects the accuracy and validity of measurement. The traditional demodulation methods are the phase-shift method and Fourier transform method. The phase-shift method has a high demodulation accuracy, but its time consumption is too long. The Fourier transform method has high efficiency, but its demodulation accuracy is lower due to the loss of high frequency information during the process of filtering. However, in actual measurement, due to the gamma effect of the projector and charge-coupled device (CCD), the phase-shift interval is not strictly equal to the default value, which causes phase-shift error. Therefore, the restored topography contains carrier frequency fringes, which affects the accuracy of the measurement and limits the wide application of SIM. In this paper, a novel demodulation algorithm based on spatial-domain carrier frequency shift is proposed to solve the problem. Through recombining multiple full-period phase-shift images, the error spectrum and the signal spectrum are separated from each other in the frequency domain, so as to eliminate the effect of carrier frequency fringes. An image is a visual representation that can be used to obtain information. A camera on a moving vector (e.g., on a rover, drone, quad, etc.) may acquire images along a controlled trajectory. The maximum visual information is captured during a fixed acquisition time when consecutive images do not overlap and have no space (or gap) between them. The images acquisition is said to be anomalous when two consecutive images overlap (overlap anomaly) or have a gap between them (gap anomaly). In this article, we report a new algorithm, named OVERGAP, that remove these two types of anomalies when consecutive images are obtained from an on-board camera on a moving vector. Anomaly detection and correction use here both the Dynamic Time Warping distance and Wasserstein distance. The proposed algorithm produces consecutive, anomaly-free images with the desired size that can conveniently be used in a machine learning process (mainly Deep Learning) to create a prediction model for a feature of interest. Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques are among the fastest-growing technologies for producing even the most geometrically complex models. Unfortunately, the lack of development of metrology guidelines for these methods, related to dimensional and geometry accuracy and surface roughness, significantly limits the commercialization of finished products manufactured using these methods. This paper aims to evaluate the macro- and micro-geometry of models manufactured using the PolyJet method from three types of photopolymer resins: Digital ABS Plus, RGD 720, and Vero Clear. For this purpose, test parts were designed and then manufactured on an Object 350 Connex3 3D printer. The Atos II Triple Scan optical system and the InfiniteFocusG4 microscope were used to evaluate macro- and micro-geometry, respectively. For both systems, measurement procedures were developed to obtain statistical results for evaluating geometric accuracy and surface roughness parameters. In the case of macro-geometry, for Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear materials, 50% of the central deviations (between first quartile Q1 and third quartile Q3) lie within the range (−0.06, 0.03 mm) and for RGD 720 material within the range (−0.08, 0.01 mm). For micro-geometry, the arithmetic mean height (Sa) values for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples were approximately 1.6 and 2.0 µm, respectively, while for RGD 720, it was 15.9 µm. The total roughness height expressed by reduced peak height (Spk) + core height (Sk) + reduced dale depth (Svk) for the Digital ABS Plus and Vero Clear samples was approximately 9.1 and 10.5 µm, respectively, while for the RGD 720, it was 101.9 µm. The seawater refractive index is an essential parameter in ocean observation, making its high-precision measurement necessary. This can be effectively achieved using a position-sensitive detector-based measurement system. However, in the actual measurement process, the impact of the jitter signal measurement error on the results cannot be ignored. In this study, we theoretically analysed the causes of long jitter signals during seawater refractive index measurements and quantified the influencing factors. Through this analysis, it can be seen that the angle between the two windows in the seawater refractive index measurement area caused a large error in the results, which could be effectively reduced by controlling the angle to within 2.06°. At the same time, the factors affecting the position-sensitive detector's measurement accuracy were analysed, with changes to the background light, the photosensitive surface's size, and the working environment's temperature leading to its reduction. To address the above factors, we first added a 0.9 nm bandwidth, narrow-band filter in front of the detector's photosensitive surface during system construction to filter out any light other than that from the signal light source. To ensure the seawater refractive index's measuring range, a position-sensitive detector with a photosensitive surface size of 4 mm × 4 mm was selected; whereas, to reduce the working environment's temperature variation, we partitioned the measurement system. To validate the testing error range of the optimised test system, standard seawater samples were measured under the same conditions, showing a reduction in the measurement system's jitter signal from 0.0022 mm to 0.0011 mm, before and after optimisation, respectively, as well as a reduction in the refractive index's deviation. Stress distribution and its magnitude during loading heavily influence the osseointegration of dental implants. Currently, no high-resolution, three-dimensional method of directly measuring these biomechanical processes in the peri-implant bone is available. The aim of this study was to measure the influence of different implant materials on stress distribution in the peri-implant bone. Using the three-dimensional ARAMIS camera system, surface strain in the peri-implant bone area was compared under simulated masticatory forces of 300 N in axial and non-axial directions for titanium implants and zirconia implants. The investigated titanium implants led to a more homogeneous stress distribution than the investigated zirconia implants. Non-axial forces led to greater surface strain on the peri-implant bone than axial forces. Thus, the implant material, implant system, and direction of force could have a significant influence on biomechanical processes and osseointegration within the peri-implant bone. Film cooling technology is of great significance to enhance the performance of aero-engines and extend service life. With the increasing requirements for film cooling efficiency, researchers and engineers have carried out a lot of work on the precision and digital measurement of cooling holes. Based on the above, this paper outlines the importance and principles of film cooling technology and reviews the evolution of cooling holes. Also, this paper details the traditional measurement methods of the cooling hole used in current engineering scenarios with their limitations and categorizes digital measurement methods into five main types, including probing measurement technology, optical measurement technology, infrared imaging technology, computer tomography (CT) scanning technology, and composite measurement technology. The five types of methods and integrated automated measurement platforms are also analyzed. Finally, through a generalize and analysis of cooling hole measurement methods, this paper points out technical challenges and future trends, providing a reference and guidance for forward researches. The contact wire wear is an important parameter to ensure the safety operation of electric railways. The contact wire may break if the wear is serious, which leads to transportation interruptions. This study proposes an optical measurement method of contact wire wear, using stereovision technology. The matching method of stereovision based on line-scan cameras is proposed. A lookup-table method is developed to exactly determine the image resolution caused by the contact wire being in different spatial positions. The wear width of the contact wire is extracted from catenaries' images, and the residual thickness of the contact wire is calculated. The method was verified by field tests. The round-robin tests of the residual thickness at the same location present excellent measurement repetitiveness. The maximum difference value between dynamic test results and ground measurement results is 0.13 mm. This research represents a potential way to implement condition-based maintenance for contact wire wear in the future in order to improve the maintenance efficiency and ensure the safety of catenary infrastructure. The refractive index of seawater is one of the essential parameters in ocean observation, so it is necessary to achieve high-precision seawater refractive index measurements. In this paper, we propose a method for measuring the refractive index of seawater, based on a position-sensitive detector (PSD). A theoretical model was established to depict the correlation between laser spot displacement and refractive index change, utilizing a combination of a position-sensitive detector and laser beam deflection principles. Based on this optical measurement method, a seawater refractive index measurement system was established. To effectively enhance the sensitivity of refractive index detection, a focusing lens was incorporated into the optical path of the measuring system, and simulations were conducted to investigate the impact of focal length on refractive index sensitivity. The calibration experiment of the measuring system was performed based on the relationship between the refractive index of seawater and underwater pressure (depth). By measuring laser spot displacement at different depths, changes in displacement, with respect to both refractive index and depth, were determined. The experimental results demonstrate that the system exhibits a sensitivity of 9.93 × 10 − 9   R I U (refractive index unit), and the refractive index deviation due to stability is calculated as ± 7.54 × 10 − 9   R I U . Therefore, the feasibility of this highly sensitive measurement of seawater refractive index is verified. Since the sensitivity of the refractive index measurement of this measurement system is higher than the refractive index change caused by the wake of underwater vehicles, it can also be used in various applications for underwater vehicle wake measurement, as well as seawater refractive index measurement, such as the motion state monitoring of underwater navigation targets such as AUVs and ROVs. In this study, a portable spectral analysis instrument based on spontaneous emission spectroscopy (SES) was developed for the in situ, non-intrusive, and quantitative measurement of gaseous Na inside ZD coal-fired boilers, which is mainly applied for predicting slagging in furnaces. This technology is needed urgently because the problem of fouling and slagging caused by high alkali metals in ZD coal restricts the rational utilization of this coal. The relative extended uncertainty for the measurement of gaseous Na concentration is Urel = 10%, k = 2, which indicates that measurement data are reliable under working conditions. It was found that there is a clear linear relationship between the concentration of gaseous Na and fouling in high-alkali coal boilers. Therefore, a fast and efficient method for predicting the slagging and fouling of high-alkali coal boilers can be established by using this in situ online real-time optical measurement. Digital holographic microscopy is an important measurement method for micro-nano structures. However, when the structured features are of high-slopes, the interference fringes can become too dense to be recognized. Due to the Nyquist's sampling limit, reliable wavefront restoration and phase unwrapping are not feasible. To address this problem, the interference fringes are proposed to be sparsified by tilting the reference wavefronts. A data fusion strategy including region extraction and tilt correction is developed for reconstructing the full-area surface topographies. Curved surface structural parts with hole systems are widely used, and accurate measurement of the hole systems is crucial for assembly and functionality. This study presents a novel approach using machine vision and structural science principles to accurately measure spherical hole systems. We introduce key technologies, including measurement parameter definition, system design, and error modeling, in the paper. Our approach overcomes the limitations of existing methods, offering flexibility, precision, and automation measurement of the hole system. Experimental results demonstrate an accuracy of 0.348′ (arcminutes). Station arrangement optimization of photoelectric theodolites in shooting ranges presents a non-convex and non-linear problem, and the method required to seek the global optimal solution remains an open question. This paper proposes an efficient traversal algorithm that could solve this problem by utilizing discretization of regions with a finite length of mesh, in which both the terrain of the station arrangement region and the observation airspace region are discretized through triangulation. To enhance the computational efficiency of the traversal algorithm, two strategies are employed to speed up the calculation: reducing the dimension of the observation airspace and using the Euclidean distance matrix to compute the intersection angle. After the global optimal solution with discrete finite precision was obtained through the traversal algorithm, it was then used as the initial points for local mesh refinement and to implement gradient-based optimization in order to further improve the precision of the solution. The proposed approach is demonstrated to be practical through application to numerical examples used for the optimization of station arrangements that involve two to four stations. The three-dimensional (3D) displacement resolution of conventional visual measurement systems can only reach tens of microns in cases involving long measuring distances (2.5 m) and large fields of view (1.5 m × 1.5 m). Therefore, a stereo vision measurement technology based on confocal scanning is proposed herein. This technology combines macroscopic visual measurement technology with confocal microscopic measurement technology to achieve a long measuring distance, a large field of view, and micron-level measuring resolution. First, we analyzed the factors affecting the 3D resolution of the visual system and developed a 3D resolution model of the visual system. Subsequently, we fabricated a prototype based on the resolution model and the proposed stereo vision measurement technology. The 3D displacement resolution measurement results in the full field of view show that the displacement resolutions of the developed equipment in the x-, y-, and z-directions can reach 2.5, 2.5, and 6 μm, respectively. Vibration measurements are essential for studying the dynamic properties of structures, as they can better capture the global characteristics of the structure. This paper proposes a three-dimensional measurement method based on projected structured light to address the challenge of measuring the vibration information of engine pipes during operation. By using the data obtained from this method and applying the time domain analysis method for modal analysis, the modal parameters of the engine under operating conditions can be obtained. The feasibility of this method is demonstrated by comparing it with different measurement methods, and it provides an effective solution for modal identification of engines under operating conditions. Especially in the field of sewage pumps, the design of radial impellers focuses not only on maximum efficiency but also on functionality in terms of susceptibility to clogging by fibrous media. In general, the efficiency of sewage impellers is significantly lower than that of clear water impellers. These sewage impellers are designed with a low number of blades to ensure that fibrous media can be pumped. This paper describes the methodology of an optimisation for a sewage impeller. The optimisation is carried out on a semi-open two-channel impeller as an example. Therefore, a new impeller is designed for a given volute casing. Based on a basic design for given boundary conditions, the impeller is verified by means of numerical simulation. The manufactured impeller is then tested on the test rig to verify the simulation. With regard to the optical investigations, the clogging behaviour of the impeller is specifically improved over three different modifications in order to finally present an impeller with good efficiency and a low clogging tendency. Autonomous, anti-jamming, and high-precision satellite navigation are of great importance to current and future space technologies. This paper proposes a cooperative constellation navigation system for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that use only the optical measurements of cooperative satellites. Based on photometry, an optical transmission link model of the system is built. With the pixel coordinates of the cooperative satellites on the optical images, the line of sight (LoS) vectors of the cooperative satellites with respect to the LEO spacecraft are first calculated, and a single-point positioning method based on the LoS vectors' inner products is proposed. The single-point positioning results are then fed into a least square batch filter to estimate a high-precision spacecraft orbit. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the potential navigation accuracy. With a cooperative satellite ephemeris error of 100 m and an optical measurement noise level of 5 arcsecs, position accuracies of single-point positioning and dynamic orbit determination in the order of hundreds of meters and eight meters, respectively, are realized. In addition, the influences of the orbital altitude of the cooperative constellation, the ephemeris error of the cooperative satellite, the noise level of the optical measurements, and the Earth's gravitational model on navigation accuracy are investigated via comparative simulations. With the goal to better process the monitoring of occurring fouling, a backscatter probe was developed to perform in-line measurements in a half-shell reactor during the reaction of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) to polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The measurement technique detects the changes of bands in the UV range, which allows a direct correlation with the concentration. Measuring resident space objects (RSOs) by star trackers has become a research hotspot in space situational awareness. However, the arc length measured by star trackers is too short to complete the high-precision orbit determination of the RSO. In this paper, a staring–tracking measurement (STM) method is proposed to obtain a sufficiently long arc. Firstly, the three-axis attitude calculation model of the satellite is established for tracking RSOs during the staring process. Secondly, an observation method of the RSO location is proposed based on the principle of the angular distance invariance and the imaging mapping function of the star tracker. Finally, the numerical simulations and the ground experiment were conducted to verify the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the acquisition time of the measurable arcs is longer than 6 min, and the accuracy of the declination and the ascension can meet the standard for RSO orbit determination. The physical experiment shows that the acquisition time is consistent with that in the simulation. Our work provides a new idea for the realization of high-precision space-based optical measurement. Reliable measurement of surface roughness (Ra) is extremely important for quality control of production processes. The cost of the equipment and the duration of the measurement process are very high. The aim of this work is to develop a device for non-destructive measurement of specific roughness levels on stainless steel using computer vision. The device should be structurally simple, affordable, accurate, and safe for practical use. The purpose of the device is to effectively detect the level of roughness of the treated surface obtained by the water jet cutting process. On the basis of the obtained results, it is possible to adjust the parameters during the cutting process. The principle of operation of the device is based on measuring the intensity of the visible spectrum of the light reflected from the surface of the sample to be measured and correlating these values with the values of the measured roughness. After testing several variants of the device, the so-called vertical measurement variant was developed using the following equipment: violet light LED, optical filter and light splitter, USB 2.0 web camera, Arduino microcontroller, personal computer, and LabView programming interface. In this paper, a novel optical measurement principle for deformation, especially torsion, is presented. A laser beam is guided via total internal reflection (TIR) in a prism rod. Every single reflection causes an increasing change in the beam path, which can be measured by its effect on the outcoupling position of the laser. With a diameter of the prism rod of 10   mm and a length of 120   mm , the system achieves torsion sensitivities between 350   µ m / ° and more than 7000   µ m / ° , depending on the actual torsion angle φ. A decency level of sensitivity is defined for comparison, which is exceeded by a factor of ~ 55 at φ = 0 . The presented principle of TIR prism rods can be adapted to measure different load cases. Using two laser beams, bending and torsion can be distinguished and combined load cases analyzed. The paper presents the results of research aimed at evaluating the surface topography including the analysis of the number of unmeasured points of the samples 3D printed using four additive technologies (i.e., PolyJet Matrix, fused deposition modeling, selective laser sintering, and selective laser melting). The samples were made in three variants of location on the printing platform of 3D printers. Measurements of the samples' surface topography were carried out using a Talysurf CCI Lite optical profilometer and a Talysurf PGI 1230 contact profilometer. The percentage of non-measured points for each sample and the parameters of the surface topography were determined. Then, the non-measured points were complemented and the topography parameters for the corrected surface were recalculated. In addition, to perform comparative measurements, each surface was measured using a contact profilometer Talysurf PGI 1230. Preliminary results of the research showed that the measurement of the surface topography of the samples made using selective laser sintering technology with the Taysurf CCI optical measuring system is very unreliable, as the number of non-measured points for the analyzed samples was higher than 98%. This paper presents the results of preliminary tests carried out in an organization producing products for the automotive industry. From the many available systems used in this research, different values of results were obtained; these differences cause doubts among people deciding about the process approval and start of production. The main aim of the research presented in the article is to determine the influence of various factors on the measurement results, especially to compare the results of measurements obtained with the optical sensor, which is used during measurements with the use of a multisensor measuring machine. The results obtained with the use of the height gauge, which is used alternatively in the organization, raise further doubts. This study proposes a 2D contour measurement system at the tool center point (TCP) that consists of a Blu-ray pickup head and position sensitive detector (PSD). The TCP displacement is equivalent to the relative position between the tool and workpiece. When the machine tools operate the machine part along the desired contour, the TCP displacement affects the machining geometric accuracy. To evaluate the TCP displacement, the contour errors are measured by the cross-grid encoder (KGM) in practice. However, it is difficult to install KGM as it is large and expensive. In this study, an optical measurement system (OMS) is constructed to measure the TCP displacement, named TCP-OMS. A Blu-ray pickup head was installed on the spindle as a tool, and a PSD was installed on the table as a workpiece. To enhance the measurement signal's resolution and precision of TCP-OMS, the noise was reduced by an AC voltage stabilizer, a DC regulator, and a low-pass filter. The experimental results show that the resolution of displacement measurement was less than 1 μ m , and the linearity regions of the X-orientation and Y-orientation were ±3 mm . The motion test on the circular paths were performed on an actual machine tool, and the repeatability tests of this measurement system were verified. The measurement data of circular paths were collected by TCP-OMS and KGM and the results were then compared. When the feed rate of the circular paths increased, the circular deviations were magnified, simultaneously. The axis reversal spikes were observed at the quadrants of a circular path. These measurement results of TCP-OMS matched with the measurement results of KGM. The TCP-OMS developed in this study is characterized by simple installation, compactness, and a low price. Diabetes can cause dangerous complications if not diagnosed in a timely manner. The World Health Organization accepts glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) as a measure of diagnosing diabetes as it provides significantly more information on the glycemic behavior from a single blood sample than the fasting blood sugar reading. The molar absorption coefficient of HbA1c is needed to quantify the amount of HbA1c present in a blood sample. In this study, we measured the molar absorption coefficient of HbA1c in the range of 450 nm to 700 nm using optical methods experimentally. We observed that the characteristic peaks of the molar absorption coefficient of HbA1c (at 545 nm and 579 nm for level 1, at 544 nm and 577 nm for level 2) are in close agreement with those reported in previous studies. The molar absorption coefficient values were also found to be close to those of earlier reports. The average molar absorption coefficient values of HbA1c were found to be 804,403.5   M − 1 cm − 1 at 545 nm and 703,704.5   M − 1 cm − 1 at 579 nm for level 1 as well as 503,352.4   M − 1 cm − 1 at 544 nm and 476,344.6   M − 1 cm − 1 at 577 nm for level 2. Our experiments focused on calculating the molar absorption coefficients of HbA1c in the visible wavelength region, and the proposed experimental method has an advantage of being able to easily obtain the molar absorption coefficient at any wavelength in the visible wavelength region. Nowadays, the optical measuring approach is widely used in the precision machining industry due to high measurement efficiency. In the industry, measuring devices play a crucial role in the field of quality assurance. In practical engineering, the green measurement approach indeed plays an important role in the industry currently. In this study, a state-of-the-art green technique for three-dimensional (3D) optical measurements without environmental pollution is demonstrated, which is an environmentally friendly optical measurement method. This method can perform precise optical measurement without matte coatings. This work dealt with the possibility of measuring four metal components that were not sprayed with anything. The differences in the optical measurement results between with and without matte coatings were investigated and analyzed. It was found that the research result has practical value in the precision machining industry because average size errors of the four measurement objects with different surface properties can be controlled at about 3 µm, 0.1 µm, 0.5 µm, and 9 µm. A technical database with industrial value was established for optical measurements of metal components with different surface properties without matte coatings, which can serve as an alternative to the conventional 3D optical measurement. Quality control and reaction monitoring are necessary to ensure the consistency of any kind of mixing or reaction process. In this context, a novel portable high-sensitivity sensor prototype based on the Raman effect is presented in this study. The elongated probe head is designed for (but not limited to) monitoring high temperature batch processes for quality assurance. Thanks to the highly sensitive special detectors, concentration differences of up to 50 mmol/L can currently be detected, which facilitates compliance with high product quality standards. In addition, seamless reaction tracking is possible. Small individual adjustments through simple, intuitive mechanical components provide a high degree of flexibility in reaction selection by the end user. Specially developed software automates the evaluation process and gives the user visual signals about the current status and progress of the batch as well as an emergency stop if temperature limits could damage individual components. By using all the individual components developed, the problem of the limited integration times of previous spectrometric measuring instruments could be reduced. The prototype was validated using concentration measurements of various substances that occur as standard in batch processes. In addition, this article provides an outlook on the fact that Raman measurements can also be carried out successfully and reliably in explosive environments in the future with the prototype presented. Profilometry is useful in detecting surface faults on solar concentrators, which can be imperfectly manufactured, thus affecting system performance. Profilometric analyses are performed on a micro-parabolic trough collector (m-PTC), with reduced sizes and greater mirror curvature than a usual PTC. The peculiar dimensions and shape of this micro-PTC request to develop a specific configuration of laser profilometry. It includes a laser diode with a converging lens placed in front of it, ensuring that the mirror curvature does not affect the beam reflection. A new method to calculate the spot position furnishes the reflected beam center even if it lies outside the target, giving it a virtual expansion. The profile is assessed with an iterative calculation, starting from a first point, physically measured. The results are the 3D profile reconstruction of the parabolic mirror and a map of the slope error for each mirror point. It also estimates the intercept factor, a parameter fundamental to optimize the m-PTC system, whose value is in agreement with a structured light measurement on the same object. This intercept factor was obtained averaging the local intercept factor calculated for each mirror point, which individuates the mirror portions not focusing the sunrays on the tube. The hot spot effect is an important factor that affects the power generation performance and service life in the power generation process. To solve the problems of low detection efficiency, low accuracy, and difficulty of distributed hot spot detection, a hot spot detection method using a photovoltaic module based on the distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor is proposed. The FBG sensor array was pasted on the surface of the photovoltaic panel, and the drift of the FBG reflected wavelength was demodulated by the tunable laser method, wavelength division multiplexing technology, and peak seeking algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed method can detect the temperature of the photovoltaic panel in real time and can identify and locate the hot spot effect of the photovoltaic cell. Under the condition of no wind or light wind, the wave number and variation rule of photovoltaic module temperature value, environmental temperature value, and solar radiation power value were basically consistent. When the solar radiation power fluctuated, the fluctuation of hot spot cell temperature was greater than that of the normal photovoltaic cell. This article focuses on the impact of the deposition temperature (in the range from 60 to 80 °C) in ZrO2 films obtained by the electrochemical deposition process on SnO2-covered glass substrates. The solution in which the deposition takes place is aqueous, containing ZrOCl2 with a concentration of 3 × 10−5 M and KCl with a concentration of 0.1 M. By implementing X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical profilometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy, the temperature dependence of ZrO2 films properties was revealed. The X-ray Diffraction XRD spectra showed six different diffraction maxima ((−111)M, (101)T, (111)M, (112)M, (202)M, and (103)M) associated with the electrochemical ZrO2 layers, and the polycrystalline structure of the films was confirmed at all deposition temperatures. The determination of the average roughness did not indicate significant temperature dependence in the deposited layers. SEM micrographs showed that the layers were composed of grains, most of them of a regular shape, although their size increased slightly with an increased deposition temperature. The coarsest-grained structure was observed for the layers deposited at 80 °C. It was demonstrated that the deposition temperature weakly impacts the reflectance and transmittance spectra of the ZrO2 layers. Such layers with low values of specular and high values of diffuse transition, and reflection in the spectral range from 380 to 800 nm, can be applied to various optoelectronic devices such as thin-film solar cells. The optical quantification of hematocrit (volumetric percentage of red blood cells) in blood flow in microfluidic systems provides enormous help in designing microfluidic biosensing platforms with enhanced sensitivity. Although several existing methods, such as centrifugation, complete blood cell count, etc., have been developed to measure the hematocrit of the blood at the sample preparation stage, these methods are impractical to measure the hematocrit in dynamic microfluidic blood flow cases. An easy-to-access optical method has emerged as a hematocrit quantification technique to address this limitation, especially for the microfluidic-based biosensing platform. A novel optical quantification method is demonstrated in this study, which can measure the hematocrit of the blood flow at a targeted location in a microchannel at any given instant. The images of the blood flow were shot using a high-speed camera through an inverted transmission microscope at various light source intensities, and the grayscale of the images was measured using an image processing code. By measuring the average grayscale of the images of blood flow at different luminous exposures, a relationship between hematocrit and grayscale has been developed. The quantification of the hematocrit in the microfluidic system can be instant and easy with this method. The innovative proposed technique has been evaluated with porcine blood samples with hematocrit ranging from 5% to 70%, flowing through 1000 µm wide and 100 µm deep microchannels. In this work, we propose a rapid calibration technique for locating the projector in the structured light measurement system. Using Brox optical flow, the calibration of the three-dimensional (3-D) coordinates of the projector only requires two images captured before and after the motion of the calibration plate. The calibration principle presented in geometry depicts the relation between the position of the projector, the camera, and the optical flow caused by the movement of the calibration plate. Some important influences on accuracy are discussed, such as the environmental noises and the localization error of the camera and the calibration plate, illustrated by numerical simulations. The simulation results show that the relative errors of the projector calibration results are less than 0.8% and 1% in the case of the calibration images polluted by Gaussian noise of SNR of 40 dB and 20 dB, respectively. An actual experiment measured a square standard block, and a circular thin plate verifies the proposed method's feasibility and practicality. The results show that the height distributions of the two specimens are in good agreement with their true values, and the maximum absolute errors are 0.1 mm and 0.08 mm, respectively. Featured Application: molecular dynamics measurement, quantification of proteins. A robust fluorescence correlation spectroscopy system called fiber-optic based fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FB-FCS) was developed; this system enables the measurement of diffusion dynamics and concentration of fluorescent molecules based on the principle of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy without any mechanical adjustment of the experimental setup. The system consisted of fiber optics and a water-immersion objective lens. The hydrodynamic diameters and concentrations of organic fluorescent dyes and fluorescently labeled proteins were successfully measured. Because of the fiber-optic-based setup, the FB-FCS system is compact and inexpensive. We expect FB-FCS to be suitable for use in laboratories, medical diagnosis, and environmental measurements. An experimental optical method has been developed for the measurement of opening and sliding notch face movements. The light passing through a thin slit is monitored by a photodiode detector. Two parts of the slit are fixed independently on the notch faces of the simulated crack. Dynamic variations of the notch face movements are recorded as an electric signal by an oscilloscope. The sensitivity of such displacement measurement is comparable with the wavelength of light. Dynamic mixed-mode stress intensity factors under shock loading were evaluated from the data obtained and subsequently compared with a numerical simulation by ANSYS software. As it was approved, the technique has shown sufficient sensitivity, good linearity, and measurement reliability. Due to its non-destructive nature and overall robustness, the arrangement is applicable even for structural component condition determination taking into consideration potentially unknown boundary conditions and the non-linear character of mechanical parameters. Featured Application: This study makes several contributions to the technique of characterizing transparent thin film. It provides a non-destructive, three-dimensional, and full-field method. Compared with the existing method based on the structured illumination microscopy, the proposed achieves a lower detection threshold for thickness by improving the algorithm. This new improvement should help discover the impact of thickness and surface topography on the characterization of materials, structures, and devices. The surface and thickness distribution measurement for transparent film is of interest for electronics and packaging materials. Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) is a prospective technique for measuring film due to its high accuracy and efficiency. However, when the distance between adjacent layers becomes close, the peaks of the modulation depth response (MDR) start to overlap and interfere with the peak extraction, which restricts SIM development in the field of film measurement. In this paper, an iterative peak separation algorithm is creatively applied in the SIM-based technique, providing a precise peak identification even as the MDR peaks overlap and bend into one. Compared with the traditional method, the proposed method has a lower detection threshold for thickness. This paper addresses the planar measurement problem in the destructive mechanical testing of masonry specimens, describing the proposed optical measurement solution. The adopted affine geometrical camera model is described as well as its experimental implementation using a digital camera and a measurement referential traceable to the International System of Units (SI). Experimental results from non-destructive tests are presented and discussed, including measurements obtained from the use of classical contact instrumentation. Coded mark point, as an important part of automatic matching, is widely used in stereo vision and photogrammetry. An encoding scheme named the Initial Dot encoding scheme, has been designed based on the programme of concentric rings, and which is able to solve restrictions on the number of codes and promote the stability of decoding. The designed coding pattern includes three functional points: locating point, start point and coded point. The maximum coding number of the Initial Dot scheme can reach 262,144 when the number of code bits is 18. The recognition experiments show that the Initial Dot encoding scheme can achieve 100% recognition rate at a 75 degree angle, which is very difficult for other coding schemes. By comparing experiments with the Schneider encoding scheme for a large flexible panel, the recognition rate of the proposed scheme is 99%, which is higher than the recognition rate of 90% of the Schneider scheme. This paper proposes a real-time compensated pentaprism scanning wavefront detection method to achieve real-time compensation for scanning errors occurring during prism movement along a guide rail. The method is based on existing pentaprism scanning wavefront detection technology and it is realized by applying self-collimation-based three-dimensional error compensation. Using theoretical and data analyses of a detection experiment, the reliability of the optimized pentaprism scanning detection method is verified, thus effectively ensuring the reasonable estimation of the interferometry surface measurement uncertainty. We present a novel method to accurately measure the vertex position of a large aspheric mirror with a phasing measuring interferometer, a laser tracker, and a micro alignment telescope. The method consists of rotating the mirror by 180° about its mechanical axis and measuring the change in displacement. Use of a micro alignment telescope eliminates the need to adjust the mirror during the measurement, eases the alignment of the testing system, and improves the vertex position measurement accuracy. We have carried out research and development on an earphone-type respiratory rate measuring device, earable POCER. The name earable POCER is a combination of “earable”, which is a word coined from “wearable” and “ear”, and “POCER”, which is an acronym for “point-of-care ear sensor for respiratory rate measurement”. The earable POCER calculates respiratory frequency, based on the measurement values over one minute, through the simple attachment of an ear sensor to one ear of the measured subject and displays these on a tablet terminal. The earable POCER irradiates infrared light using a light-emitting diode (LED) loaded on an ear sensor to the epidermis within the ear canal and, by receiving that reflected light with a phototransistor, it measures movement of the ear canal based on respiration. In an evaluation experiment, eight healthy subjects first breathed through the nose 12 times per minute, then 16 times per minute, and finally 20 times per minute, in accordance with the flashing of a timing instruction LED. The results of these evaluation tests showed that the accuracy of the respiratory frequency was 100% for nose breathing 12 times per minute, 93.8% at 16 times, and 93.8% at 20 times. In this study, an earphone-type interface named “earable TEMPO” was developed for hands-free operation, wherein the user can control the device by simply pushing the tongue against the roof of the mouth for about one second. This interface can be used to start and stop the music from a portable audio player. The earable TEMPO uses an earphone-type sensor equipped with a light emitting diode (LED) and a phototransistor to optically measure shape variations that occur in the external auditory meatus when the tongue is pressed against the roof of the mouth. To evaluate the operation of the earable TEMPO, experiments were performed on five subjects (men and women aged 22–58) while resting, chewing gum (representing mastication), and walking. The average accuracy was 100% while resting and chewing and 99% while walking. The precision was 100% under all conditions. The average recall value of the five subjects was 92%, 90%, and 48% while resting, masticating, and walking, respectively. All subjects were reliably able to perform the action of pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth. The measured shape variations in the ear canal were highly reproducible, indicating that this method is suitable for various applications such as controlling a portable audio player. In lithium-ion battery manufacturing, wetting of active materials is a time-critical process. Consequently, the impact of possible process chain extensions such as lamination needs to be explored to potentially improve the efficiency of the electrode and separator stacking process in battery cell manufacturing. This paper addresses the research gap of the unexplored effects of lamination on the wetting rate of electrode-separator assemblies in pouch cells. Based on the triangulation of three measurement techniques (gravimetric, optical, electrochemical), a correlation between lamination and wettability of electrode-separator assemblies is experimentally demonstrated, thus providing an important research contribution. This paper reports the precision of shape-from-focus (SFF) imaging according to the texture frequencies and window sizes of a focus measure. SFF is one of various depth measurement techniques for optical imaging, such as microscopy and endoscopy. SFF measures the depth of an object according to focus measure, which is generally computed with a fixed window. The window size affects the performance of SFF and should be adjusted for the texture of an object. In this study, we investigated the precision difference of SFF in texture frequencies and by window size. Two experiments were performed: precision validation in texture frequencies with a fixed window size, and precision validation in various window sizes related to pixel-cycle lengths. The first experimental results showed that a smaller window size could not provide a correct focus measure, and the second results showed that a window size that is approximately equal to a pixel-cycle length of the texture could provide better precision. This study conducted wind tunnel tests with consecutive deflection angle changes on a three-dimensional (3D) wing with a control surface to procure aerodynamic data by sweeping the deflection angle. Configuration changes of a wind tunnel test model, such as changing the deflection angle of control surfaces, are usually performed manually with the ventilation suspended. Hence, the number of configurations that can be implemented within a confined test period is restricted; the aerodynamic data gained are discrete values. To accomplish continuous angular modulation would dramatically improve the ability by sweeping through the aerodynamic data in wind tunnel tests, enhancing the test system as a tool for discussing complex physical phenomena. Thus, this study created a compact remote feedback control system using optical measurement to continuously obtain high-precision aerodynamic data without stopping the wind tunnel, eliminating human operation. In particular, this study targets a 3D wing wind tunnel model with a control surface, which is more challenging to fabricate, miniaturizing the system in a model. The system consequently attained consecutive aerodynamic data multiple times under numerous configurations, which had been impracticable to reach in the past, within a wind tunnel test period of several days, thereby dramatically increasing the testing capability. The reproducibility was quantitatively verified by comparing the multiple data for the identical configurations. Furthermore, the reliability was demonstrated using discrete data obtained by conventional stepwise deflection angle adjustments. Due to their lightweight properties, fiber-reinforced composites are well suited for large and fast rotating structures, such as fan blades in turbomachines. To investigate rotor safety and performance, in situ measurements of the structural dynamic behaviour must be performed during rotating conditions. An approach to measuring spatially resolved vibration responses of a rotating structure with a non-contact, non-rotating sensor is investigated here. The resulting spectra can be assigned to specific locations on the structure and have similar properties to the spectra measured with co-rotating sensors, such as strain gauges. The sampling frequency is increased by performing consecutive measurements with a constant excitation function and varying time delays. The method allows for a paradigm shift to unambiguous identification of natural frequencies and mode shapes with arbitrary rotor shapes and excitation functions without the need for co-rotating sensors. Deflection measurements on a glass fiber-reinforced polymer disk were performed with a diffraction grating-based sensor system at 40 measurement points with an uncertainty below 15 μ rad and a commercial triangulation sensor at 200 measurement points at surface speeds up to 300 m/s. A rotation-induced increase of two natural frequencies was measured, and their mode shapes were derived at the corresponding rotational speeds. A strain gauge was used for validation. Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) in aerospace applications are expected to operate in moist environments where carbon fibres have high resistance to water absorption; however, polymers do not. To develop a truly optimised structure, it is important to understand this degradation process. This study aims to expand the understanding of the role of water absorption on fibrous/polymeric structures, particularly in a matrix-dominant property, namely interlaminar strength. This work used Acoustic Emission (AE), which could be integrated into any Structural Health Monitoring System for aerospace applications, optical strain measurements, and microscopy to provide an assessment of the gradual change in failure mechanisms due to the degradation of a polymer's structure with increasing water absorption. CFRP specimens were immersed in purified water and kept at a constant temperature of 90 °C for 3, 9, 24 and 43 days. The resulting interlaminar strength was investigated through short-beam strength (SBS) testing. The SBS values decreased as immersion times were increased; the decrease was significant at longer immersion times (up to 24.47%). Failures evolved with increased immersion times, leading to a greater number of delaminations and more intralaminar cracking. Failure modes, such as crushing and multiple delaminations, were observed at longer immersion times, particularly after 24 and 43 days, where a pure interlaminar shear failure did not occur. The observed transition in failure mechanism showed that failure of aged specimens was triggered by a crushing of the upper surface plies leading to progressive delamination at multiple ply interfaces in the upper half of the specimen. The crushing occurred at a load below that required to initiate a pure shear failure and hence represents an under prediction of the true SBS of the sample. This is a common test used to assess environmental degradation of composites and these results show that conservative knockdown factors may be used in design. AE was able to distinguish different material behaviours prior to final fracture for unaged and aged specimens suggesting that it can be integrated into an aerospace asset management system. This work presents a novel method for the non-invasive, in-line monitoring of mixing processes in microchannels using the Raman photometric technique. The measuring set-up distinguishes itself from other works in this field by utilizing recent state-of-the-art customized photon multiplier (CPM) detectors, bypassing the use of a spectrometer. This addresses the limiting factor of integration times by achieving measuring rates of 10 ms. The method was validated using the ternary system of toluene–water–acetone. The optical measuring system consists of two functional units: the coaxial Raman probe optimized for excitation at a laser wavelength of 532 nm and the photometric detector centered around the CPMs. The spot size of the focused laser is a defining factor of the spatial resolution of the set-up. The depth of focus is measured at approx. 85 µm with a spot size of approx. 45 µm, while still maintaining a relatively high numerical aperture of 0.42, the latter of which is also critical for coaxial detection of inelastically scattered photons. The working distance in this set-up is 20 mm. The microchannel is a T-junction mixer with a square cross section of 500 by 500 µm, a hydraulic diameter of 500 µm and 70 mm channel length. The extraction of acetone from toluene into water is tracked at an initial concentration of 25% as a function of flow rate and accordingly residence time. The investigated flow rates ranged from 0.1 mL/min to 0.006 mL/min. The residence times from the T-junction to the measuring point varies from 1.5 to 25 s. At 0.006 mL/min a constant acetone concentration of approx. 12.6% was measured, indicating that the mixing process reached the equilibrium of the system at approx. 12.5%. For prototype benchmarking, comparative measurements were carried out with a commercially available Raman spectrometer (RXN1, Kaiser Optical Systems, Ann Arbor, MI, USA). Count rates of the spectrophotometer surpassed those of the spectrometer by at least one order of magnitude at identical target concentrations and optical power output. The experimental data demonstrate the suitability and potential of the new measuring system to detect locally and time-resolved concentration profiles in moving fluids while avoiding external influence. In concentrating solar systems, it is essential to study the optical losses of the collectors. A fundamental parameter is the intercept factor, namely, the fraction of sunrays reflected by the concentrator that reaches the receiver. Optical profilometry studies the relationship between the collector profile and the intercept factor, which influences the collection efficiency. Profilometric analyses were performed on a micro-parabolic trough collector (m-PTC), with reduced sizes and greater mirror curvature than a usual PTC. The proposed technique projects a luminous pattern (structured light) both on the collector with an opaque covering and on a flat reference plane. Measurement set-up and calibration technique were developed for m-PTC. A program coded in Python analyzed the images and reconstructs the mirror profile. The tilted reference plane was reconstructed using an original geometric model and a calibration procedure. The focal length of each parabolic section was calculated, providing information on surface defects in the mirror. An important parameter obtained was the displacement of the focus of the parabola with respect to the ideal position. Using this value, the intercept factor was estimated to be 0.89.
