The complexity of offshore operations demands that offshore platforms withstand the variability and uncertainty of marine environments. Consequently, analyses of platform motion responses must extend beyond single sea state conditions. This study employs the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFDs) software STAR-CCM+ for data acquisition and investigates platform motion from two perspectives: adaptability analysis to different wave directions and adaptability analysis to varying significant wave heights. The aim is to develop a model capable of predicting offshore platform motion responses across multiple sea state conditions. The results demonstrate that integrating the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) algorithm with residual convolutional neural networks (ResCNNs) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks effectively resolves the challenge of insufficient prediction accuracy under diverse maritime conditions. Following EMD incorporation, the model's performance within the predictive range was significantly enhanced, with the coefficient of determination (R2) consistently exceeding 0.5, indicating a high degree of model fit to the data. Concurrently, the mean squared error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) metrics exhibited commendable performance, further substantiating the model's precision and reliability. This methodology introduces an innovative approach for forecasting the dynamic responses of offshore structures, providing a more rigorous and accurate foundation for maritime operational decisions. In the random sea environment, offshore platforms are influenced by factors such as wind, waves, and currents, as well as their interactions, leading to complex motion phenomena that affect the safety of offshore platform operations. Consequently, accurately predicting the motion response of offshore platforms has long been a key focus in the fields of naval architecture and ocean engineering. This paper utilizes STAR-CCM+ to simulate time-history data of offshore platform motion responses under both regular and irregular waves. Furthermore, a predictive model combining residual convolutional neural networks and long short-term memory neural networks using neural network technology is also studied. This model utilizes an autoregressive approach to predict the motion responses of offshore platforms, with its predictive accuracy validated through comprehensive evaluations. Under regular wave conditions, the coefficient of determination (R2) for the platform's heave and pitch responses consistently exceeds 0.99. Meanwhile, under irregular wave conditions, the R2 values remain generally above 0.4. Additionally, the model exhibits commendable performance in terms of Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) metrics. Operators of offshore production units (OPUs) employ risk-based assessment (RBA) techniques in order to minimise inspection expenses while maintaining risks at an acceptable level. However, when human divers and workers are involved in inspections conducted at high heights, the operational risks can be significant. Recently, there has been a growing trend towards the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for inspections of offshore structures as a means to reduce exposure to human risk. This article provides an analysis of these vehicle inspection capabilities and their potential to enhance robustness and safety within the oil and gas industry. The review assesses both the advantages and the drawbacks associated with these innovative systems, providing valuable comparisons and assessments on their potential use as viable alternatives to conventional inspection methods. The primary objective of this study was to assess differential vertical and horizontal deformations for the offshore Kashagan oilfield located in the Northern Caspian Sea. Sentinel-1 (SNT1) and COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images (9 January 2018–6 April 2022) were processed using persistent scatterer interferometric SAR (PS-InSAR) technique with further 2D decomposition of line-of-sight (LOS) measurements to differential vertical and horizontal deformations. Differential vertical deformation velocity was observed to be between −4 mm/y and 4 mm/y, whereas horizontal was between −4 mm/y and 5 mm/y during 2018–2022. However, it was possible to observe the spatial deformation patterns with the subsidence hotspots reaching differential cumulative vertical displacement of −20 mm from both satellite missions. PS-InSAR differential vertical deformation measurements derived from SNT1 and CSK satellite images showed identical spatial patterns with moderate agreement, whereas poor agreement was observed for differential horizontal deformations. The differential vertical deformation hotspots were observed for the oilfield areas installed on piles with obviously higher vulnerability to dynamic movements. Through this study, based on the interferometric measurements, marine geotechnical expert feedback, and no reported deformation-related incidents since 2013, it was possible to conclude that the Kashagan oilfield had not been impacted by significant differential vertical and horizontal deformations on the oilfield. However, since long-term GPS measurements were not accessible from the oilfield to be used as the reference for PS-InSAR measurements, we were not able to judge the long-term displacements of the entire oilfield or possible oscillations, even though it is built on the artificial island. Considering the broad range of PS-InSAR measurements using time-series radar images, the interferometric measurements could play a significant role in the prioritization of insitu risk assessment activities, operational cost reduction, strengthening of safety factors, and planning of further targeted insitu measurements. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is crucial for ensuring the safety and performance of offshore platforms. SHM uses advanced sensor systems to detect and respond to negative changes in structures, improving their reliability and extending their life cycle. Model updating methods are also useful for sensitivity analysis. It is feasible to discuss and introduce established techniques for detecting damage in structures by utilizing their mode shapes. In this research, by considering reducing the stiffness of elements in the damage scenarios, we conducted simulations of the models in MATLAB, including both two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures, to update the method suggested by Wang. Wang's method was improved to produce a sensitivity equation for the damaged structures. The sensitivity equation solution using a subset of mode shapes data was found to evaluate structural parameter changes. Comparing the updated results for Wang's method and the suggested method in the two- and three-dimensional frames showed a noticeable modification in damage recognition. Furthermore, the suggested method can update a model containing measurement errors. Since Wang's damage detection formulation is suitable only for 2D structures, this modified framework provides a more accurate decision-making tool for damage detection of structures, regardless of whether a 2D or 3D formulation is used. Vibration sensing is of great significance in offshore engineering monitoring and safety detection. This paper presented a low-frequency vibration sensor (LV-TENG) based on a cantilever-beam-structured triboelectric nanogenerator, which can perform high-precision vibration sensing while conducting vibration energy collection effectively. The LV-TENG was composed of two aluminum electrode layers, a spring steel sheet covered with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and a first-order vibration mode structured frame. Under the excitation of external vibration, the spring steel sheet undergoes first-order modal vibrations between the aluminum electrodes and generates a periodically fluctuating electrical signal in the external circuit. The vibration profile of the cantilever beam was first analyzed theoretically to provide guidance for structural design. On this basis, the influence of the main structural parameters, including the structure of the Al electrode, the thickness of the steel plate, and the electronegative materials, on the output performance of LV-TENG was experimentally investigated and the structure was optimized to enhance electrical output. The results showed that the LV-TENG can accurately sense structure vibration with a frequency of 0.1 Hz to 5.0 Hz and an amplitude of 2.0 mm to 10.0 mm. The measured output voltage followed a positive linear relationship with frequency and the fitted correlation coefficient reached 0.994. The demonstration experiment indicated that the LV-TENG is expected to provide a new avenue for low-frequency vibration monitoring and can be used for structural health monitoring analysis in marine engineering. Offshore platform plays an important role in ocean strategy, and the construction of structural health monitoring (SHM) system could significantly improve the safety of the platform. In this paper, complete SHM system architecture design for offshore platform is presented, including the sensor subsystem, data reading and transferring subsystem, data administration subsystem, and assessment subsystem. First, the sensor subsystem is determined to include the structure information, component information, and vibration information monitoring of the offshore platform. Based on the monitoring target, three sensor types including incline sensor, acceleration sensor, and strain sensor are initially selected. Second, the assessment subsystem is determined to include safety monitoring and early warning evaluation using static measurements, overall performance evaluation based on frequency variation, and damage identification based on strain modal using strain monitoring. Overall performance evaluation based on frequency variation and damage identification based on Strain modal are illustrated. Finally, an offshore platform in the East China Sea is selected to establish a finite-element model to discuss the application and feasibility of the SHM system, the frequency variation due to scouring, corrosion, the growth of marine organisms, and temperature variation was investigated, and the overall performance of the platform was also evaluated. The long dissolution time and large dispensed volumes of oil repellent polymers in offshore oil fields lead to a great increase in the volume and number of dissolution and maturation tanks in the polymer formulation system. However, there is limited space and load-bearing capacity at the offshore platform and only a small space is available for the dispensing system. To further optimize the polymer dispensing system and reduce its floor space, the super-gravity technology may be considered as a way to speed up the dissolution of the polymer. The mechanism of super-gravity rapid dissolution was investigated by establishing mathematical models and with indoor experiments. The effects of filler pore size and super-gravity factor on polymer dissolution time and solution viscosity were investigated using the super-gravity rapid dissolution device, then combined with established graded forced stretching devices for field magnification experiments. The results indicated that the super-gravity method can substantially shorten the polymer dissolution time. The basic dissolution time of the polymer AP-P4 was shortened by 35 min compared with the conventional formulation method after use of the super-gravity rapid dissolution device. The optimal process conditions for the preparation of polymer solution by the super-gravity rapid dissolution device were selected as the optimal super-gravity factor range of 1031~1298. Diverse forms of offshore oil and gas structures are utilized for a wide range of purposes and in varying water depths. They are designed for unique environments and water depths around the world. The applications of these offshore structures require different activities for proper equipment selection, design of platform types, and drilling/production methods. This paper will provide a general overview of these operations as well as the platform classifications. In this paper, a comprehensive review is conducted on different offshore petroleum structures. This study examines the fundamentals of all types of offshore structures (fixed and floating), as well as the applications of these concepts for oil exploration and production. The study also presents various design parameters for state-of-the-art offshore platforms and achievements made in the industry. Finally, suitable types of offshore platforms for various water depths are offered for long-term operations. An extension of this study (Part II) covers sustainable design approaches and project management on these structures; this review helps designers in understanding existing offshore structures, and their uniqueness. The increasing energy demand has led to more explorations in the oil and gas industry. To achieve this, marine risers and pipelines are used to convey fluid and other resources to meet the increasing demand. In recent years, hybrid flexible composite risers have become more adaptable. Flexible risers have already proven to be a popular riser solution for various floating production systems in shallow to deepwater in many parts of the world due to their good dynamic behaviour and dependability. The hybrid flexible composite riser is made up of numerous layers of plastics, flexible pipes, composites, and steel. Some innovative monitoring methods, such as Fiber Optics Bragg Gratings (FBG), are based on a clamped composite structure with embedded optical fibre. This study presents characteristics of the monitoring techniques of composite flexible riser technology. The advantages of the monitoring techniques include aiding composite riser measurements, recording data from riser deformation, improving integrity assurance, and dependability of design from stable readings. Offshore structures exist in a variety of forms, and they are used for a variety of functions in varied sea depths. These structures are tailored for certain environments and sea depths. Different actions for suitable equipment selection, platform type design, and drilling/production processes are required for the applications of these offshore structures, as given in Part I. This paper is the second part, which outlines various processes, loads, design approaches and project management of offshore platforms. To achieve these, proper planning must be conducted for lifting, transportation, installation, design, fabrication, and commissioning of these offshore platforms. Some historical developments of some offshore structures are presented, and some project planning routines are undertaken in this research. The ultimate goal is to provide a general overview of the many processes of offshore platform design, construction, loadout, transportation, and installation. Some discussions on the design parameters such as water depth and environmental conditions were presented. It also lists various software programs used in engineering designs covering software programs for structural analysis, 3D rendering, computer-aided design (CAD), hydrodynamic design, oceanic flow analysis, offshore structures analysis, mathematical modelling, coding/algorithm development software, and programming software to aid analytical calculations. The review also includes information on cutting-edge offshore platforms and industry advancements. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of vibration waves in periodic pipelines were studied based on the band theory of phononic crystals, and we analyzed the influence of the geometrical structure parameters on the band gap characteristics of pipelines. The results show that, by increasing the number of layers of local resonant structure, both the initial frequency and the cutoff frequency of the band gap moved towards the lower frequency, while the width of the system band gap increased by 35 Hz, and the damping effect increased by 18.3 dB. By changing the thickness of the wall of the pipeline system, the width of the system band gap increased by 20 Hz, and the damping effect increased by 9.1 dB. The maximum vibration isolation of the offshore platform truss based on the periodic structure can be up to 7.93 dB. Prototype monitoring techniques play an important role in the safety guarantee of mooring systems in marine engineering. In general, the complexities of harsh ocean environmental conditions bring difficulties to the traditional monitoring methods of application, implementation and maintenance. Large amounts of existing mooring systems still lack valid monitoring strategies. In this paper, an underwater monitoring method which may be used to achieve the mechanical responses of a multi-point catenary mooring system, is present. A novel self-contained assembled water depth-inclination (D-I) sensor is designed and manufactured. Several advanced technologies, such as standalone, low power consumption and synchronism, are considered to satisfy the long-term implementation requirements with low cost during the design process. The design scheme of the water resistance barrel and installation clamp, which satisfies the diver installation, are also provided in the paper. An on-site test has previously been carried out on a production semisubmersible platform in the South China Sea. The prototype data analyses, including the D-I value in the time domain (including the data recorded during the mooring retraction and release process) and spectral characteristics, are presented to reveal the accuracy, feasibility and stability of the sensor in terms of fitting for the prototype monitoring of catenary mooring systems, especially for in-service aging platforms. The requirements for the fire resistance of steel structures of oil and gas facilities for transportation and production of hydrocarbons are considered (structures of tankers and offshore platforms). It is found that the requirements for the values of fire resistance of structures under hydrocarbon rather than standard fire conditions are given only for offshore stationary platforms. Experimental studies on the loss of integrity (E) and thermal insulating capacity (I) of steel bulkheads and deck with mineral wool under standard and hydrocarbon fire regimes are presented. Simulation of structure heating was performed, which showed a good correlation with the experimental results (convective heat transfer coefficients for bulkheads of class H: 50 W/m2·K; for bulkheads of class A: 25 W/m2·K). The consumption of mineral slabs and endothermic mat for the H-0 bulkhead is predicted. It is calculated that under a standard fire regime, mineral wool with a density of 80–100 kg/m2 and a thickness of 40 to 85 mm should be used; under a hydrocarbon fire regime, mineral wool with a density above 100 kg/m2 and a thickness of 60–150 mm is required. It is shown that to protect the structures of decks and bulkheads in a hydrocarbon fire regime, it is necessary to use 30–40% more thermal insulation and apply the highest density of fire-retardant material compared to the standard fire regime. Parameters of thermal conductivity and heat capacity of the applied flame retardant in the temperature range from 0 to 1000 °C were clarified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the demand for oil production in varying water depth regions, the advantage of flexible buoyant conduits has led to an increase in bonded marine hoses for fluid transfer and (un)loading operations. The fluid transfer system for bonded marine hoses is dependent on floating offshore structures (FOS). This paper presents an overview of different systems for sustainable fluid transfer and (un)loading operations via FOS, such as Single Point Mooring (SPM) systems. SPMs are component aspects of the techno-economic design and FOS operation. This review aims to present sustainable fluid transfer technologies while addressing the subject of bonded marine hoses based on application, configuration, test models, hose selection criteria, hose-mooring configurations and operational views. This paper also includes an overview of the hose dynamics, with the loading and unloading (or discharging) techniques for sustainable fluid transfer via marine bonded hoses, based on operational challenges encountered. To dynamically present the hose performance in this review, an overview of the test methods' guidance as specified in available industry standards was conducted. The pros and cons of marine hose application were also presented. Finally, this study presents different marine hose types and novel design configurations applied in implementing hose-mooring systems. The offshore plant, due to its characteristics, is subject to many restrictions on the material and design of the pipes. Because the design of the firefighting piping depends on the pre-set fire protection design, it is possible to reduce the cost of the piping design by optimizing the arrangement of the firefighting equipment. Existing studies have low accuracy in obtaining service areas under these conditions. In addition, the arrangement optimization problem is generally modeled as a set cover problem (SCP). However, except for the traditional greedy approximation, this problem is not well researched for general solutions. In this paper, first, a modified iterative-deepening search (MIDS), which accurately obtains a service area according to the travel distance in the grid space, is proposed before optimization. Additionally, this paper seeks to define a set cover problem by combining the subsets obtained by MIDS. Second, by using the traditional greedy algorithm, we obtained the initial arrangement of the firefighting equipment. Then, we proposed a method to obtain an approximate optimization solution using a modified greedy method including rearrangement. The validity of the proposed coverage area acquisition and arrangement optimization method is verified by comparing the performance with other algorithms. To improve the anti-explosion performance of blast wall in offshore platforms, an auxetic re-entrant blast wall (ARBW) was proposed and designed based on the indentation resistance effect of an auxetic structure. Based on the numerical nonlinear dynamic analysis method verified by the explosion experiment of a conventional steel corrugated blast wall (CBW), the failure mechanisms of ARBW, steel honeycomb sandwich blast wall (HSBW) and CBW were investigated under distributed impulse loads. Computational results demonstrated the excellent anti-explosion performance of the proposed ARBW design. Concerning the minimal deformation at the mid-point of the proposed protective structures, the ARBW performed best. As regards the minimal deformation at the connection, both ARBW and HSBW worked well. Estimation of wave run-up has been of increasing concern for offshore wind structures and a critical aspect for designers. The highly nonlinear phenomenon makes the study difficult. That is the reason for the very few design rules and experimental data available to estimate it. Actual wave run-up is greater than commonly predicted. The goal of this research is to benchmark the theoretical formulations with the results of the physical model tests performed by Deltares in the field of crest elevation, run-up, forces and pressures. The laboratory reproduced in a wave tank (75 m length; 8.7 m width; 1 m depth; and a 1:60 scale, with Froude similarity) an offshore power converter platform located at intermediate water depths (25–43.80 m) in the Southern North Sea, designed by the Norwegian company Aibel. The purpose of this research is to offer a preliminary design guide for wave run–up using theoretical expressions both for cylinders and gravity based structures (GBS), leaning on the cited laboratory tests to validate the results obtained by such theoretical models. The quantity and location of offshore platforms are of great significance for marine oil spill monitoring and offshore oil-gas development. In the past, multiphase medium- and low-resolution optical or radar images have been used to remove the interference of ship targets based on the static position of a platform to extract the offshore platform, resulting in large demands and high image data costs. According to the difference in shape between offshore platforms (not elongated) and ships (elongated shapes) in SAR (synthetic aperture radar) images, this paper proposes an automatic extraction method for offshore platforms in single SAR images based on a dual-step-modified model. First, the two-parameter CFAR (constant false alarm rate) algorithm was used to detect the possible offshore platform targets; then, the Hough transform was introduced to detect and eliminate ship targets with linear structures. Finally, the final offshore platform was obtained. Experiments were carried out in four study areas in the Beibu Gulf basin and the Pearl River estuary basin in the northern South China Sea. The results show that the method has a good extraction effect in the above research area, and the extraction accuracy rate of offshore platforms is 86.75%. A single SAR image can obtain satisfactory extraction results, which greatly saves on image data cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a group model building activity designed to elicit the potential effects a projected multi-use deep water offshore platform may have on its local environment, including ecological and socio-economic issues. As such a platform is proposed for construction around the island of Hsiao-Liu-Chiu, Taiwan, we organized several meetings with the local stakeholders and structured the debates using group modeling methods to promote consensus. During the process, the participants iteratively built and revised a causal-loop diagram that summarizes their opinions. Overall, local stakeholders concluded that a multi-use deep water offshore marine platform might have beneficial effects for Hsiao-Liu-Chiu because more tourists and fish could be attracted by the structure, but they also raised some potential problems regarding the law in Taiwan and the design of the offshore platform, especially its resistance to extreme weather.
