Produced waters are often treated in open lagoons where hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can off gas, posing a risk to human health and the environment. The aim of this study was to optimize a treatment process using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to oxidize H2S while minimizing off gassing. Samples of produced water from West Texas and laboratory-prepared waters utilizing sodium sulfide (Na2S) or biogenic polysulfides were oxidized with H2O2 alone or in combination with copper or iron catalysts, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), or a commercial sulfide oxidizer, HydroPower Green™. Sulfur speciation was measured using Hach test kits for sulfide/sulfate/sulfite and Dräger tubes for headspace H2S. HydroPower Green™ (HPG) helped to reduce H2S in the headspace of water samples; some of this was pH related as NaOH also worked, but not as well as HPG. The dose of peroxide necessary to oxidize sulfides to sulfate is a function of the oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) of the water and total sulfide concentration as well as pH; approximately a 1–4:1 ratio of peroxide to sulfide concentration was needed to oxidize sulfidic waters of pH 7–10 with half-lives under 30 min. Both copper and iron catalysts reduce H2O2 demand and the half-life of H2S. Peracetic acid (PAA) and copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4, 5H2O) were explored as biocides for controlling sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRBs) that produce H2S. An AquaSnap (Hygenia) test kit was employed to monitor relative microbial activity in a wetland porewater containing H2S. Microbial regrowth occurred after a few days using the highest dose of PAA; these results showed that PAA was being used by bacteria as a carbon source even after the initial substantial reduction in the microbial activity. CuSO4, 5H2O at a dose of 1 ppm prevented microbial regrowth. The recommended treatment process from this research is determined by jar testing with H2O2, a base for pH control, a biocide, and possibly a metal catalyst or other co-oxidants in order to achieve oxidation of sulfides without H2S release or the precipitation of metal carbonates or oxides. The treatment of produced water is a major challenge faced by oil and gas industries worldwide. As a result of the increase in industrial activities, the generation of produced water has increased significantly. The most commonly used method for produced water oil–water separation is de-oiling hydrocyclone technology due to its simple construction, compact design, easy maintenance, and high efficiency. A wide breadth of scientific research studies has been carried out on performance evaluation, design optimisation, geometric parametrisation, external interventions, etc., to enhance the performance of hydrocyclones. These studies mostly rely on either experimental data obtained from the field, in laboratories under a controlled environment, or the application of numerical techniques for oil-in-water separation. Considering the extensive research studies published on hydrocyclone technology, this study aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent technological advancements in hydrocyclone technology in order to identify key areas where scientific research efforts should be concentrated. Gravity settling is a widely employed technology that removes oil from produced water in oilfields. However, with the transition of reservoir development to low-permeability reservoirs, conventional produced water settling tanks face limitations in the treatment efficiency and coagulant dosage. This study presents an innovative approach that optimizes sedimentation tank structures and integrates micro-vortex flow technology to enhance coagulation and flocculation. Through chemical dosage experiments, comparative experiments, and long-term observation, the micro-vortex flow reactor demonstrates a 9.4% increase in oil removal efficiency while reducing the coagulant dosage by 30.0%. The MOR equipment achieved a 20.5% higher oil removal efficiency than conventional methods while maintaining effluent oil and suspended solids below 20 mg/L. The long-term observation experiment of MOR equipment further highlights oil removal efficiency of 94.2% and the micro-vortex reactor's excellent anti-pollution performance. The MOR equipment significantly reduces the land occupancy area by over 50% compared to conventional methods, thanks to the implementation of micro-vortex flow technology that effectively addresses the limitations associated with traditional settling tanks. This study contributes to advancing efficient and sustainable practices in waterflooding reservoirs, particularly for meeting stringent standards of water injection in low-permeability oilfields. Two pilot-scale desalination systems employing carbon modified nano-sized, zero valent metals (n-ZVMs) were manufactured and tested to determine (1) the degree to which high-salt water (20 to 130 mS) could be desalinated and (2) if this degree of desalination could be maintained throughout an extended treatment period. The two pilot systems (referred to as Generation 1 and Generation 2) consisted of parallel lines of four individual reactors in series, a settling tank and an activated carbon cell at the end of each reactor line. The system capacity was 300 gal in Generation 1 and 600 gal in Generation 2 with a total hydraulic residence time of 6 h per reactor line (one hour per cell/tank). A slurry of n-ZVMs manufactured from mixtures of ferrous sulfate and green or black tea extract was introduced in the first reactor on each line to yield approximately 5 to 45 g of nano metal per 100 L of influent salt water based on dosing experiments required to achieve maximum salt removal at each of the three influent salt contents used, 28 mS, 44 mS and 123 mS. Once dosing was set, continuous runs (14 days, 23 days and 9 days) were carried out. The results demonstrated that maximum removal occurred with 10 g/100 L of salt for the 30 mS salt solution, 16 g/100 L of salt for the 40 mS influent water and 40 g/100 L for the 130 mS influent. Salt removal (expressed as Na+ and Cl− removed) approached 78% for the 30 mS influent and 41 mS influent, respectively, while removal for the highest concentration salt influent (130 mS) approached 81%. Continuous operation over the extended time-period showed no significant decrease in salt removal with a typical day to day variation of no more than 10%, suggesting that this approach to desalination could rapidly provide usable water from saline aquifers, seawater or even produced water. The application of deoiling hydrocyclone systems as the downstream of three-phase gravity separator (TPGS) systems is one of the most commonly deployed produced water treatment processes in offshore oil and gas production. Due to the compact system's complexity and tailor-made features, it is always challenging to develop some optimally coordinated control solution for the coupled hydrocyclone and TPGS systems. It is obvious that coordinated control can better fulfill legislative discharge regulation by robustly maintaining high separation efficiencies. This paper presents a new control solution for a set of integrated hydrocyclone and TPGS systems by applying an improved multi-variable model reference adaptive control (MV-MRAC) approach with the aim of achieving both asymptotic output tracking and unknown disturbance rejection. A robust MV-MRAC controller design is proposed based on a control parameterization derived from a factorization of a high-frequency gain matrix K p = L D S as a product of three matrices, where L represents unity lower triangular, D = s i g n (D) represents diagonal, and S represents positive definite, and a teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm for optimizing the adaption rates. The developed solution is analyzed and compared with a commonly deployed PI control solution on a model that is derived from a lab-scale produced water treatment process. Numerous treatment modalities have been employed over the years to eradicate bacterial communities in industrial wastewater. Oxidizing agents and chemical additives, such as ozone, permanganate, glutaraldehyde, and chlorine, are effective in treating microbial contaminants that are typically found in domestic wastewater. However, the chemical complexity of water produced from fracking requires novel approaches, because the microbes have developed mechanisms to overcome typical disinfectants. In this work, we test the effectiveness of bacteriophages for the eradication of two model bacteria from produced water: Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus megaterium. These bacteria were grown in low salinity produced water and exposed to their corresponding phage. Overall, the total inactivation of the P. aeruginosa population was achieved, as well as the inactivation of B. megaterium. These promising results provide a potentially useful tool for bacterial elimination in overall PW treatment, at an industrial scale. Particularly, since phage treatment is a rapid and cost-effective alternative. Petroleum-produced water is the primary effluent generated during the oil extraction process, presenting high flow rates, and containing a series of chemical components that are harmful to the environment, such as dissolved manganese. The proof of metrological compatibility between laboratories and different test methods or techniques is an analytical challenge when complying with environmental laws and regulations, which is the aim of this study. The first step of this study was to compare the results of manganese content in real test samples of produced water between some laboratories that used different test methods, that is, flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Based on one-way analysis of variance, systematic errors were found. The following step was to visit a specific lab, where one could confirm the relevance of the wavelength parameters, operating conditions for the view configuration, and effects of the saline matrices. Finally, a compatibility assessment between the reference laboratory and a new laboratory, which implemented and validated its analytical methodology based on these analytical adjustments, and the experiences and lessons learned in the previous step, was undertaken by a paired t-test. A massive volume of produced water (PW) generated in the process of oil extraction must be treated effectively due to its threat to the ecosystems and human health. Different biological treatment technologies have been used in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) systems to treat PW. However, their influence on treatment performance has not been investigated. In this study, three PW treatment plants (PWTPs) with different treatment technologies were compared in the following aspects: microbial community structure and assembly, functional genes, and the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The results indicated that different biological treatment technologies led to the variations in the diversity and composition of the microbial community. Phylogenetic bin-based null model analysis (iCAMP) revealed that different treatment technologies deterministically drove the assembly of microbial communities, especially the genera associated with the removal of petroleum hydrocarbons. The results of the metagenomic analysis showed that the genes related to the degradation of alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons were the most abundant in PWTP3, suggesting it had the highest petroleum degradation potential. In addition, the highest abundance of ARGs in PWTP1 indicated the potential facilitation of ARG dissemination in activated sludge systems. The identification and assessment of plant stress using wetland satellite images is a major task in remote sensing. In this study, one of the largest constructed wetlands (CWs) in the world, located in the Sultanate of Oman, was examined, assessed, and evaluated using remote sensor data from Sentinel-2. This CW system treats produced water generated during oil exploration activities in a desert environment; thus, CW vegetation is subjected to stress induced by oil hydrocarbons and water salinity. This study examined the plant stress and detected changes between the years of 2017 and 2019. Sentinel satellite images were evaluated for vegetation status extraction. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Modified Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (MSAVI), and Normalized Difference Salinity Index (NDSI) were used to evaluate the vegetation change. The results showed a comprehensive mapping identification of the plant stress and water flow parameter factors including oil in water contamination (OIW), dissolved oxygen (DO), water temperature (WT), and water conductivity (COND). Among the three indices, it was found that the NDVI showed a very good correlation with all parameters in both years with average R2 = 0.78, 0.67, 0.75, and 0.60 for OIW, DO, WT, and COND, respectively. The same trend was found for MSAVI but with R2 = 0.59, 0.48, 0.55, and 0.56 for OIW, DO, WT, and COND, respectively. This shows that the NDVI performed better than the MSAVI in evaluating the water flow parameters. On the other hand, the NDSI showed a strong correlation with one flow parameter, that is, water conductivity, especially at the outlet cells of the CW with R2 = 0.86 and 0.82 for winter time and summer time, respectively. The synchronization and correlation between the water flow parameters and remote sensing vegetation indices in this study lead to a new approach to large-scale landscape wetland monitoring that improves and helps predict any degradation or stress on vegetation growth. Furthermore, the results of this work can help decision makers potentially modify the wetland design and water flow path to improve future expansion phases. The mapping of such a critical and massive industrial CW should consider the use of high spatial resolution sensors where identifications and classifications are further improved. In summary, this research demonstrates that it is feasible to estimate vegetation stress within the constructed wetland using remote sensing techniques across extensive regions when an ample dataset comprising field data, satellite imagery, and supporting information is accessible. A variety of microorganisms grow in oil reservoirs, where they participate in the biodegradation of oil and lead to changes in oil quality. Today, our knowledge about microbial processes in oil reservoirs is largely limited, and among the urgent tasks for the oil industry, monitoring and controlling microbial activity (including the activity of microbes responsible for biocorrosion) are important. In this work, we aimed to characterize the bacterial community structure of the produced waters from oilfields in the south of the Republic of Tatarstan (Russian Federation) using cultural and molecular methods of analysis. Bacteria from produced water samples from various oil wells were enriched, and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to assess the phylogenetic diversity of the bacterial communities. Thus, analysis of the bacterial communities revealed the presence of various members within the genera Desulfotomaculum, Clostridium, Acetobacterium, Desulfovibrio, Dethiosulfovibrio, Desulfomicrobium, Fusibacter, Dethiosulfatibacter, Thermovirga, Sphaerochaeta, and Desulfoplanes, but in different produced water samples. The role of the bacterial associations in biocorrosion was separately assessed in experiments on monitoring and stimulating biocorrosion. The bacterial community receiving additional nutrition was shown to have a higher corrosion potential, and scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed changes in the surface of the metal coupons during immersion testing. Background: The classical mathematical formulation of the vendor-managed inventory (VMI) model assumes an infinite planning horizon, and consequently, the solution derived ignored the impact of the first cycle. The classical formulation is associated with another implicit assumption that input parameters remain static indefinitely. Methods: This paper develops two mathematical models for VMI for a joint economic lot-sizing (JELS) policy. Each model considers investment in green production, energy used for keeping items in storage, and carbon emissions from production, storage, and transportation activities under the carbon cap-and-trade policy. The first model underlies the first cycle, while the second underlies subsequent cycles. Results: The re-start-up production time for subsequent cycles commences only at the time required to produce and replenish the first lot, which implies further cost reduction. Mathematical formulations are perceived as important both for academics and practitioners. For example, the base model of the first cycle (subsequent cycles) generates an optimal produced quantity with 18.42% (4.35%) less total system cost when compared with the pest scenario in favor of the existing literature. Moreover, such a percentage of total system cost reduction increases as the production rate increases. Further, the proposed models not only produce better results but also offer the opportunity to adjust the input parameters for subsequent cycles, where each cycle is independent from the previous one. Conclusions: The emissions generated by the system are very much related to the demand rate and the amount of investment in green production. Illustrative examples, special cases, model overview, and managerial insights are given. The discussion related to the contribution of the proposed model, the concluding remarks, and further research are also provided. The proposed model rectifies the base model adopted by the existing literature, which can be further extended to be implemented in several interesting further inquiries related to JELS inventory mathematical modeling. The petroleum industry produces a large amount of wastewater, known as produced water (PW), during oil production and processing. This PW contains hazardous organic and inorganic components that can harm the environment. Conventional treatment methods have been used to purify PW, but they do not meet environmental regulations, especially when the goal is to reuse the water. Therefore, further research is needed to find an effective technology for managing PW. This review focuses on the characteristics and management of PW originating from oil and gas fields. Firstly, we provide a detailed overview of PW production scenarios worldwide and in the US with detailed quantities and chemical compositions of organic, inorganic, and physicochemical characteristics. Secondly, challenges and environmental concerns associated with treating PW are discussed. Thirdly, all relevant treatment technologies for PW are systematically explored. In addition, this review highlights the management of PW and suggests treatment options and best practices for the industry, and finally, future research needs and opportunities for sustainable water treatment and effective reuse technologies are addressed. Because PW contains a variety of severe contaminants, single methods have not been effective in converting it to a reusable form or fulfilling disposal criteria. As a result, integrated technologies may provide a potential approach that not only meets regulatory standards but also provides chances to employ PW as a non-conventional water supply. Bromate is a potentially carcinogenic disinfection by-product of potential concern in desalinated waters, where bromide derived from seawater can be converted to bromate by the oxidising species used for disinfection. Historically, it has been difficult to maintain complete adherence to national standards of no more than 10 ppb for bromate at all locations served with desalinated seawater by the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In this full-scale study, the addition of 100–200 ppb of ammonia to the produced water of a Multi-Stage Flash Desalination plant effectively controlled the formation of bromate in the transmission system supplying inland centres in the Makkah Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Arafa, Taif) on a time scale sufficient for the distribution of water to the consumer, even when the bromide content of the produced water was artificially enhanced (up to 132 ppb) via the addition of seawater. To reduce the environmental impact of offshore oil and gas, the hydrocarbon discharge regulations tend to become more stringent. One way to reduce the oil discharge is to improve the control systems by introducing new oil-in-water (OiW) sensing technologies and advanced control. De-oiling hydrocyclones are commonly used in offshore facilities for produced water treatment (PWT), but obtaining valid control-oriented models of hydrocyclones has proven challenging. Existing control-oriented models are often based on droplet trajectory analysis. While it has been demonstrated that these models can fit steady-state separation efficiency data, the dynamics of these models have either not been validated experimentally or only describe part of the dynamics. In addition to the inlet OiW concentration, they require the droplet size distribution to be measured, which complicates model validation as well as implementation. This work presents an approach to obtain validated nonlinear models of the discharge concentration, separation efficiency, and discharge rate, which do not require the droplet size distribution to be measured. An exhaustive search approach is used to identify control-oriented polynomial-type Hammerstein–Wiener (HW) models of de-oiling hydrocyclones based on concentration measurements from online OiW monitors. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this modeling approach, a PI controller is designed using the Skogestad internal model control (SIMC) tuning rules to control the discharge OiW concentration directly. The identification experiment emulates an offshore PWT system with installed OiW monitors, which is realistic with the legislative incentive to include online OiW discharge measurements. The proposed approach could enable the application of OiW-based control on existing offshore PWT facilities, resulting in improved de-oiling performance and reduced oil discharge. Removal of organic pollutants and metal ions from produced water by adsorption, using prepared activated carbon (AC) from sewage sludge, with chemical activations using NaOH, KOH and ZnCl2 separately and pyrolysis at different temperatures (500, 600 and 700 °C). Pure sludge and prepared ACs were analyzed using FTIR and XRD. The results showed 18% crystallinity compared to that of commercial AC, which has 44% crystallinity. The results of FTIR demonstrate that the properties of the post-treated affect the final products depending on the method used and that it contains similar functional groups to those present in the commercial AC, but at a higher peak intensity. Adsorption treatments were carried out at 25, 35 and 45 °C solution temperatures. The results showed that the removal of pollutants from produced water using prepared AC with all types of chemical activations reached 99.5%, such as commercial AC with 0.06 g dosage of adsorbent at pyrolysis temperatures of 500 and 600 °C and a solution temperature of 25 °C. The obtained results refer to the mechanism of exothermic reaction and physical adsorption. It was observed that despite the lower dosage of adsorbent of 0.01 g, a sufficient treatment of pollutants was achieved. This reveals the effectiveness of using sewage sludge as a cheap adsorbent. Also, using pure sewage sludge, the adsorption data showed a 95.2% removal of the pollutants. This result indicated that pure sludge has an efficient adsorption capacity and can be utilized as a cheap and environmentally friendly material. For the removal of manganese and cadmium metal ions from the produced water, the resultant data showed that more than 90% of manganese was adsorbed and more than 97% of cadmium was adsorbed, especially when using pure sewage sludge and prepared activated carbon with NaOH chemical activation at pyrolysis temperatures of 500 °C and 600 °C. The deployment of a manufacturing execution system (MES) holds promising potential in facilitating the accumulation of a substantial amount of inspection data. Low quality levels in discrete manufacturing environments are the result of multi-factor coupling and the failure to detect quality issues promptly in accordance with manufacturing settings, which may trigger the propagation of downstream defects. Currently, most inspection quality methods consist of direct measurements followed by manual judgment. The integration of deep learning methods provides a feasible way in which to identify defects on time, thus improving the acceptance rate of factories. This paper focuses on the design of a data-driven quality prediction and control model, built around discrete manufacturing characteristics, and uses fuzzy theory to evaluate the quality levels of production stages. Furthermore, a multivariate long- and short-term memory sequence model is proposed in order to explore the qualitative information from time domain features. The data regarding the produced water dispensers are validated using three evaluation indices, namely, RMSE, MAE, and MAPE. The petroleum industry produces thousands of barrels of oilfield waters from the initial stage driven by primary production mechanisms to the tertiary stage. These produced waters contain measurable amounts of oil-in-water emulsions, the exact amounts being determined by the chemistry of the crude oil. To meet strict environmental regulations governing the disposal of such produced waters, demulsification to regulatory permissible levels is required. Within the electric double layer theory, coupled with the analytical solutions to the Poisson–Boltzmann Equation, continuum electrostatics approaches can be used to describe the stability and electrokinetic properties of emulsions. In the literature, much of the surface charge density and zeta potential relationship to emulsion stability has been confined to systems with less salinity. In this paper, we have exploited the theoretical foundations of the electric double layer theory to carry out theoretical evaluations of emulsion salinity based on zeta potential and surface charge density calculations. Most importantly, our approaches have enabled us to extend such theoretical calculations to systems of the higher salinity characteristic of oil-in-water emulsions found in oilfield-produced waters, based on crude oil samples from the literature with varying surface chemistry. Moreover, based on the definition of acid crude oils, our choice of samples represents two distinct classes of crude oils. This approach enabled us to evaluate the stability of emulsions associated with these produced oilfield waters in addition to predicting the potential of demulsification using demulsifiers. Given that the salinity range of this study is that encountered with the vast majority of produced oilfield waters, the findings from our theoretical predictions are perfect guides as far as emulsion stability is concerned. Numerous recent studies have shown that discharging colored wastewater into the environment causes contamination, which has adverse impact due to textile, dyeing, and food industries. The current study presents experimental research on the clathrate hydrate technique used for producing pure water from of wastewater contaminated by dyes. Under constant starting conditions, the clathrate formation for binary (water + refrigerant gas) and ternary (water + refrigerant gas + promotor) systems were studied. The R134a gas was used along with Cyclohexane (2.5 vol%), Tween 80 (100 ppm), and silica gel powder as promotors (100 ppm). Moreover, povidone-iodine (500, 2500, and 5000 ppm) and potassium permanganate (10, 50, and 100 ppm) were used as colored compounds in order to prepare synthetic wastewater (model wastewater). The production of hydrates, which rapidly captured the refrigerant gas molecules in the solid phase, was primarily responsible for the pressure drop. Both povidone-iodine and potassium permanganate have a negligible impact on the hydrate formation rates. It was found that the concentration of povidone-iodine and potassium permanganate in the produced water was decreased. As far as we know, the method of using clathrate hydrate to remove the dyes in water has never been investigated. The results showed that the povidone-iodine removal efficiency ranged between 86% and 92%, and the potassium permanganate removal efficiency ranged between 90% and 95%. The removal efficiency was improved by adding promotors, which increased the dissolved gas quantity and the amount of water hydrates. The maximum removal efficiency was accomplished using silica gel powder and cyclohexane, which are more significant than in pure water and Tween 80. Ground water contamination from septic systems and the application of dairy cattle manure has been a long-standing problem in rural northeastern Wisconsin, especially in areas with thin soils over karstified Silurian dolostone bedrock, where as many as 60% of the wells show evidence of fecal contamination. We present the results of a citizen science supported water-isotope study in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin to evaluate aquifer recharge processes in the critical zone and to demonstrate the viability of time-series stable isotope data as a supplement to traditional water quality indicators in a contamination-prone aquifer. A meteoric water line was also constructed for Green Bay, Wisconsin, providing reasonable isotopic ranges for aquifer recharge events. Volunteer homeowners collected water samples from their domestic wells for a period of ~14 months to provide a measure of long-term isotopic variation in produced water and to determine whether event-driven responses could be identified using δ18O and δ2H isotopic values. Three shallower wells with a prior history of contamination exhibited significant seasonal variation, while the deepest well with the greatest soil thickness (above bedrock) showed less variation. For moderate precipitation events, the shallowest well showed as much as 5–13% of produced water coming from direct recharge, with smaller contributions for deeper wells. Oil (and natural gas) field brines can be considered promising sources of lithium for the sustainable supply of a growing market. To date, many materials have been developed for direct lithium recovery from brines, but most often these materials have been tested under various conditions, what makes it impossible to compare them. The aim of this research is to provide knowledge that would enable the comparison and selection of effective sorbents for different types of brines. For this purpose, an eight-step experimental protocol was employed. The recovery tests started with a pure lithium solution (300 mg/kg), and then other salts were gradually added, resulting in a brine containing Li+ (220 mg/kg), Na+ (7.21 wt%), Ca2+ (3.0 wt%) and Mg2+ (1000 mg/kg). For selected cases, the effect of pH was also investigated. Fifty materials (including ion exchange resins, organophosphate extractants, mineral adsorbents) were examined, for which the distribution coefficient and lithium recovery were determined. Moreover, for the most promising materials, lithium over magnesium selectivity and lithium ion capacity were determined. Only γ-Al2O3, TiO2 and MnOx-based powders keep their effectiveness in ultra-high salinity ranges and in the presence of high concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in alkaline solution. Preparation of tough and high-strength hydrogels for water plugging in oil fields with an easy-scalable method is still considered to be a challenge. In this study, dialdehyde cellulose nanofibril (DA-CNF) prepared by sodium periodate oxidation, polyamine, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) with sulfonate groups and Acrylamide (AM) as raw materials, CNF reinforced nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared in one step by in-situ polymerization. The tensile strength, and texture stability of the obtained nanocomposite hydrogel were determined. The results showed that the tensile strength and toughness of the obtained nanocomposite hydrogel increased four times compared with control sample due to physical and chemical double crosslinking synergies. Moreover, the texture intensity of DA-CNFs reinforced hydrogel still maintains high stability and strength performance under high salinity conditions. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) or biocorrosion is a complex biological and physicochemical process, Strategies for monitoring MIC are frequently based on microbial cultivation methods, while microbiological molecular methods (MMM) are not well-established in the oil industry in Brazil. Thus, there is a high demand for the development of effective protocols for monitoring biocorrosion with MMM. The main aim of our study was to analyze the physico-chemi- cal features of microbial communities occurring in produced water (PW) and in enrichment cultures in oil pipelines of the petroleum industry. In order to obtain strictly comparable results, the same samples were used for both culturing and metabarcoding. PW samples displayed higher phylogenetic diversity of bacteria and archaea whereas PW enrichments cultures showed higher dominance of bacterial MIC-associated genera. All samples had a core community composed of 19 distinct genera, with MIC-associated Desulfovibrio as the dominant genus. We observed significant associations between the PW and cultured PW samples, with a greater number of associations found between the cultured sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) samples and the uncultured PW samples. When evaluating the correlation between the physicochemical characteristics of the environment and the microbiota of the uncultivated samples, we suggest that the occurrence of anaerobic digestion metabolism can be characterized by well-defined phases. Therefore, the detection of microorganisms in uncultured PW by metabarcoding, along with physi-cochemical characterization, can be a more efficient method compared to the culturing method, as it is a less laborious and cost-effective method for monitoring MIC microbial agents in oil industry facilities. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), due to their mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic potential, can lead to numerous chronic and fatal diseases. PAHs have been found in several wastewater streams, including "produced water," which is wastewater generated during the extraction of oil and gas. The PAHs' removal from produced water using physical, chemical, biological, and combined methods is crucial. Water is a vital ecosystem component and is extremely vulnerable to PAHs. This article reviews the current PAH situation, including their physical and chemical properties, types, characteristics, and removal methods from produced water. The mechanism of each method of removal of PAHs has been discussed. The current study results show that adsorption by nanoparticles and integrated methods are promising methods to meet the strict authoritarian limit with advanced increase potential in the direction of commercialization for the removal of PAHs and provide opportunities to use produced water as a source of water. The flexibility of membrane contactors (MCs) is highlighted for a reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant. MCs are applied as pre-treatment for the oxygen removal and the pH reduction of seawater, also as post-treatment for the pH increase of the RO permeate and the reduction of the RO brine volume. A decrease of the seawater pH down to neutral values, as needed when coagulation is used in the pre-treatment line of RO, together with an increase of the RO permeate pH up to 7.58, matching the target of produced water, can be obtained without the use of chemicals. Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) and Vacuum Membrane Distillation (VMD) are investigated as function of the feed concentration (ranging from 40 g/L to 80 g/L) and temperature (40 °C–80° C). Their performance is compared at parity of operating conditions and in terms of applied driving force. Both distillation systems are able to efficiently reject salts (rejection > 99.99%), while higher distillate fluxes are obtained when a vacuum is applied at the permeate side (15 kg/m2h vs. 6.6 kg/m2h for the 80 g/L feed). A significant issue for the ecosystem is the presence of boron in water resources, particularly in produced water. Batch and dynamic experiments were used in this research to extract boron in the form of boric acid from aqueous solutions using boron selective resins, DIAION CRB05. DIAION™ CRB05 is an adsorbent that is effective in extracting boron from aqueous solutions due to its high binding capacity and selectivity for boron ions, and it is also regenerable, making it cost-effective and sustainable. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and FTIR analysis for DIAION CRB05 characterization. To increase the adsorption capacity and find the ideal values for predictor variables such as pH, adsorbent dose, time, and boric acid concentration, the Box–Behnken response surface method (RSM) was applied. The dosage was reported to be 2000 mg/L at pH 2 and boron initial concentration of 1115 mg/L with 255 min for the highest removal anticipated from RSM. According to the outcomes of this research, the DIAION CRB05 material enhanced boron removal capability and has superior performance to several currently available adsorbents, which makes it suitable for use as an adsorbent for removing boric acid from aqueous solutions. The outcomes of isotherm and kinetic experiments were fitted using linear methods. The Temkin isotherm and the pseudo-first-order model were found to have good fits after comparison with R2 of 0.998, and 0.997, respectively. In northern Afghanistan, the Kashkari oil field's first production well was drilled in 1976, and by 1979, there were a total of ten wells drilled in the area. According to the results of surveys and calculations conducted by research institutions, the total amount of original oil in place (OOIP) in the Kashkari oil site was around 140 million barrels (MMbbls). Therefore, a method to increase the total amount of recoverable oil in the Kashkari oil field by low-salinity water flooding is presented in this study. First, the oil extraction method by low-salinity water injected into the underlying petroleum storage tank was examined by both a laboratory core flooding test and a numerical simulation model. Laboratory conditions (temperature, pressure, rock properties, and oil properties) were designed to mimic those of the Kashkari oil field. Additionally, different injection (Inj) and production patterns were considered to achieve the best results. Next, results obtained from the laboratory and computer simulations were compared. Then, the total amount of recoverable oil was calculated using the low-salinity water flooding method. Based on the findings, details of the simulated model were applied to the Kashkari reservoir model for extracting oil by injecting low-salinity water in the oil field. Hydraulic fracturing utilizes pressurized liquid typically consisting of water, proppants, and a multitude of chemical additives, in order to fracture petroliferous strata to extract natural gas and oil. In this process, a vast amount of wastewater is produced. This water is heavily contaminated, which renders it unusable outside of direct reuse, without extensive treatment being performed. Typically, various sophisticated analytical techniques are involved in the characterization of both waste and treated waters, increasing the cost and the complexity of the management efforts. The article discusses the constituents found in oilfield wastewater, the methods used to identify and quantify these constituents, and the present management methods. Additionally, we introduce total organic carbon and conductivity analyses as surrogate measurements of overall water quality. Total organic carbon and conductivity are established bulk measurements, which can be used to facilitate rapid decisions regarding the treatment and greater utilization of flowback and produced oilfield wastes. The application of the proposed surrogates could be used to streamline the current myriad of complex and expensive measurements. The Changbei gas field, which initially exhibited high gas-production performance, is dominated by large-displacement horizontal wells. With the decrease in reservoir pressure, the liquid loading in the gas well is currently severe, and production has been rapidly decreasing. Thus, recognizing the gas-well liquid loading to maintain stable gas-well production is necessary. A method was established to identify the water source of the liquid loading in the Changbei gas field. First, formation water and condensate water were identified based on the mineralization of the recovered water and the mass concentration of Cl− and K+ + Na+, and then the condensate content of the water produced in the gas well was qualitatively evaluated. The water–gas ratio curve for the gas well was plotted to determine whether the produced water was edge-bottom water, pore water, or condensate. Then a method was established to distinguish the start time of liquid loading in the gas well using a curve depicting a decrease in production; the method was also used to estimate the depth of the gas well where liquid loading occurs, according to the bottomhole pressure. First, based on the available production data, the Arps decline model was applied to fit the production curve for the entire production phase; the resulting curve was compared with the actual production curve of the gas well, and the two curves diverged when fluid accumulation began in the gas well. Finally, the liquid-loading depth of the gas well was estimated based on the bottomhole pressure. This method can be used to determine the fluid accumulation and calculate the liquid-loading depth of gas wells with unconnected oil jackets. The analysis revealed that in the Changbei gas field, condensate was the type of water primarily produced in 35 gas wells, accounting for 62.5% of the total number of gas wells. Edge-bottom water was the type of water primarily produced in 16 gas wells, accounting for 28.6% of the total number of gas wells. In the remainder of the gas wells, pore water was the water primarily produced; the calculations of accumulation time and accumulation volume of typical gas wells in the block revealed that some gas wells started to accumulate liquid after 45–50 months, and the amount of accumulation could reach several tens of meters, while others were in good production condition. The method established in this paper could enhance our understanding of liquid loading in gas wells in the Changbei gas field and lay a foundation for the development of gas-well deliquification techniques. Improving the produced fluid yield is an effective measure for realizing the crude oil production capacity of offshore platforms. However, for offshore platforms employed in production, using the narrow space of the platform to expand the produced water treatment system is a significant problem. In this study, a highly efficient pre-treatment core tube was coupled with the main cavity and secondary cavities (MCSCs) based on a vane-type tubular separator and a cub-mother cyclone. The optimal inlet Reynolds number and processing capacity were determined according to the structure size of the MCSC, and the MCSC was applied to achieve highly efficient pre-treatment of produced water in a heavy oilfield in the Bohai Sea. The comprehensive evaluation indicators FA and FV were better than those used by current technology. When the influent oil content fluctuated around 2000 mg/L (average of 1772.81 mg/L), the oil content in the effluent was stable and below 200 mg/L (average of 106.44 mg/L), and the separation efficiency was nearly 94%. Compared to those of the current corrugated plate interceptor on the platform, the floor space was reduced by more than 60% and the separation efficiency increased by up to 65%. Oil reservoirs are one of the most important deep subsurface biospheres. They are inhabited by diverse microorganisms including bacteria and archaea with diverse metabolic activities. Although recent studies have investigated the microbial communities in oil reservoirs at large geographic scales, it is still not clear how the microbial communities assemble, as the variation in the environment may be confounded with geographic distance. In this work, the microbial communities in oil reservoirs from the same oil field were identified at a localized geographic scale. We found that although the injected water contained diverse exogenous microorganisms, this had little effect on the microbial composition of the produced water. The Neutral Community Model analysis showed that both bacterial and archaeal communities are dispersal limited even at a localized scale. Further analysis showed that both pH and nitrate concentrations drive the assembly of bacterial communities, of which nitrate negatively correlated with bacterial alpha diversity and pH differences positively correlated with the dissimilarity of bacterial communities. In contrast, the physiochemical parameters had little effect on archaeal communities at the localized scale. Our results suggest that the assembly of microbial communities in oil reservoirs is scale- and taxonomy-dependent. Our work provides a comprehensive analysis of microbial communities in oil reservoirs at a localized geographic scale, which improves the understanding of the assembly of the microbial communities in oil reservoirs. The quantitative identification of water sources is an important prerequisite for objectively evaluating the degree of aquifer interference and predicting the production potential of coalbed methane (CBM) wells. However, this issue has not been solved yet, and water sources are far from being completely understood. Stable water isotopes are important carriers of water source information, which can be used to identify the water sources for CBM wells. Taking the Zhijin block in the Western Guizhou Province as an example, the produced water samples were collected from CBM wells. The relationships between the stable isotopic compositions of the produced water samples and the production data were quantitatively analyzed. The following main conclusions were obtained. (1) The δD and δ18O values of the produced water samples were between −73.37‰ and −27.56‰ (average −56.30‰) and between −11.04‰ and −5.93‰ (average −9.23‰), respectively. The water samples have D-drift characteristics, showing the dual properties of atmospheric precipitation genesis and water–rock interaction modification of the produced water. An index d was constructed to enable the quantitative characterization of the degree of D-drift of the produced water. (2) The stable isotopic compositions of produced water showed the control of the water sources on the CBM productivity. The probability of being susceptible to aquifer interference increased with the increasing span of the producing seam combination, reflected in the lowering δD and δ18O values and the decreasing gas productivity. (3) Three types of water, namely, static water, dynamic water, and mixed water, were identified. The characteristic values of the isotopic compositions of the static and dynamic water were determined. Accordingly, a quantitative identification method for the produced water sources was constructed, based on their stable isotopic compositions. The identification results have a clear correlation with the gas production, and the output of the static water contributes to the efficient CBM production. The method for the quantitative identification of the water sources proposed in this study, can help to improve the CBM development efficiency and optimize the drainage technology. Phenol and its derivatives are present in effluents from several industrial processes, such as petroleum refining (produced water) and the pharmaceutical industry, and they are highly toxic. The present work elaborated a new catalyst for the removal of phenol and its derivatives. The photocatalyst was prepared by a simple method from the ammonium oxalate of niobium and nickel nitrate, resulting in heterostructures (principally NaNbO3/NaNb3O8 and a lesser amount of NiO) named NiNb. Platinum was deposited on this catalyst (NiNb/Pt catalyst), and its photocatalytic activity was tested on the degradation of phenol in seawater and distilled water, in the presence and absence of UV-C light (germicidal, λ = 254 nm), and with varying concentrations of platinum and varying pH of the solution. The catalyst was characterized by different techniques (SEM, EDS, DRS, XRD, TXRF, SBET,). The results of the study showed that the NiNb/Pt catalyst achieved 65% phenol removal in seawater and about 57% removal in distilled water. The reuse of the catalyst was also studied, and the photocatalytic mechanism was investigated by tests with scavenger agents and terephthalic acid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The geochemical characteristics of water produced from coalbed methane (CBM) wells contain rich information about the associated geology, environment, and production. This study was conducted in the Southern Qinshui Basin, where produced water samples were collected from 10 typical CBM wells and their ionic compositions and water quality parameters were tested. The differences in the chemical characteristics of the produced water between different producing coal seams and between single-seam production wells (SPWs) and multi-seam co-production wells (MCWs) were compared, and the geochemical formation process of the produced water was revealed. The following conclusions were obtained: (1) the water produced samples that were mainly Na-HCO3-type and were generally weakly alkaline and moderately mineralized. The water produced from No. 15 coal seam was more enriched in SO4, Ca, and Mg compared to that of No. 3 coal seam, and the variations were more intense, reflecting a more complex water chemistry formation. (2) The ionic data of the water produced from MCWs do not lie between the coal seams of SPWs, nor do they satisfy the linear relationship between the ionic compositions of SPWs, reflecting the differences in the water sources between MCWs and SPWs. Water from MCWs tends to communicate with active water sources outside the coal seams, and the produced water contains small amounts of Cl and total dissolved solids, thus inhibiting the pressure reduction efficiency and limiting the effect of CBM co-production. (3) Based on a principal component analysis of the ionic compositions, two characteristic components were extracted, and these represented two types of hydrochemical formation processes. The first type is pyrite oxidation and carbonate dissolution, and its opposite represents sulfate reduction. The second type reflects the groundwater retention and confinement characteristics, and its opposite represents active groundwater or stronger recharge conditions. (4) A geochemical formation model of the water produced from CBM wells in the study area was constructed. Cation exchange adsorption and sulfate reduction were found to be the main water–rock interactions in the coal measure, and they determine the overall water quality of the produced water. Recharge has a relatively significant influence on water produced from MCWs. Pyrite oxidation exists in the water produced from No. 15 coal seam of the Taiyuan Formation, and the higher sulfur content in the coal contributes to this reaction. The results of the study will assist in deepening our understanding of the geochemical formation mechanisms of water produced from CBM wells, and they provide the main reasons for the poor CBM co-production effect from the Shanxi and Taiyuan Formations. Antimony deposits contain little Sn, whereas Sb and Pb are not the principally contained metal of granite-related Sn deposits. The Danchi Sn-metallogenic ore belt (DSOB) in southwestern China is characterized by Sn-Sb-Zn-Pb co-enrichment, yet the triggers are poorly constrained. The Beixiang deposit in the southern DSOB consists of stage I Sn-Zn and stage II Sb-Pb-Zn mineralization. Here, we analyzed the cassiterite U-Pb age, fluid inclusion H-O and sulfide Pb-S isotopes, and calcite trace elements of the Beixiang ores. By comparing with the Dachang and Mangchang Sn-polymetallic ore-fields within the DSOB, we constrained the timing of regional mineralization and revealed the processes causing the Sb-Pb co-enrichment. The cassiterite U-Pb dating yielded 90.6 ± 4.5 Ma (MSWD = 2.6), similar to the ages of the Dachang and Mangchang ore fields, indicating the Late Cretaceous mineralization event throughout the DSOB. The fluid inclusions from stage II ore have δ18OH2O (−2.8 to −7.8‰) and δDV-SMOW (−90.5 to −59.3‰), and the synchronous calcite features have low REE contents, upward-convex REE patterns, and weak Eu anomalies. These suggest that the ore fluids were derived from meteoric water and oil field brine, which dissolved S and Pb from local strata as recorded by sulfide sulfur (δ34SV-CDT = −6.2 to −4.0‰) and Pb isotopes. However, calcite from the stage I ore have higher REE contents and (La/Yb)N, with strong positive Eu anomalies, indicating that the Sn-rich ore fluids were released by greisenization of granite. Overall, we suggest that the combination of granitic magma- and oil field brine-derived fluids, rich in Sn-Zn and Sb-Pb-Zn, respectively, caused the co-enrichment of Sn-Sb-Pb-Zn in Beixiang and throughout the DSOB. Polymer flooding is drawing lots of attention because of the technical maturity in some reservoirs. The first commercial polymer flooding in China was performed in the Daqing oilfield and is one of the largest applications in the world. Some laboratory tests from Daqing researchers in China showed that the viscoelasticity of high molecular weight polymers plays a significant role in increasing displacement efficiency. Hence, encouraged by the conventional field applications and new findings on the viscoelasticity effect of polymers on residual oil saturation (ROS), some high-concentration high-molecular-weight (HCHMW) polymer-flooding field tests have been conducted. Although some field tests were well-documented, subsequent progress was seldom reported. It was recently reported that HCHMW has a limited application in Daqing, which does not agree with observations from laboratory core flooding and early field tests. However, the cause of this discrepancy is unclear. Thus, a systematic summary of polymer-flooding mechanisms and field tests in China is necessary. This paper explained why HCHMW is not widely used when considering new understandings of polymer-flooding mechanisms. Different opinions on the viscoelasticity effect of polymers on ROS reduction were critically reviewed. Other mechanisms of polymer flooding, such as wettability change and gravity stability effect, were discussed with regard to widely reported laboratory tests, which were explained in terms of the viscoelasticity effects of polymers on ROS. Recent findings from Chinese field tests were also summarized. Salt-resistance polymers (SRPs) with good economic performance using produced water to prepare polymer solutions were very economically and environmentally promising. Notable progress in SRP flooding and new amphiphilic polymer field tests in China were summarized, and lessons learned were given. Formation blockage, represented by high injection pressure and produced productivity ability, was reported in several oil fields due to misunderstanding of polymers' injectivity. Although the influence of viscoelastic polymers on reservoir conditions is unknown, the injection of very viscous polymers to displace medium-to-high viscosity oils is not recommended. This is especially important for old wells that could cause damage. This paper clarified misleading notions on polymer-flooding implementations based on theory and practices in China. Produced water (PW) generated from the petroleum industry, during the extraction of oil and gas, has harmful impacts on human health and aquatic life, due to its complex nature. Therefore, it is necessary to treat it before discharging it into the environment in order to avoid serious environmental concerns. In this research, oil adsorption from PW was investigated using clay-alginate beads loaded with ionic liquids (ILs), as the adsorbent material. The effects of several process parameters, such as the initial concentration of oil, contact time, pH, and temperature on the removal efficiency of the beads, were analyzed and optimized. Different characterization methods, such as the Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), were used to investigate the surface morphology, the chemical bond structure and functional group, and the thermal stability of the ILs-based beads. The results revealed that the clay-alginate-ILs beads indicated a removal efficiency of 71.8% at the optimum conditions (600 ppm initial oil concentration, 70 min contact time, 10 pH, and at room temperature) with an adsorption capacity of 431 mg/g. The FTIR analysis confirmed the successful chemical bond interaction of the oil with the beads. The SEM analysis verified that the beads have a porous and rough surface, which is appropriate for the adsorption of oil onto the bead's surface. The TGA analysis provides the thermal degradation profile for the clay-alginate-ILs. The beads used in the adsorption process were regenerated and used for up to four cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The injection water and formation water in the Mahu oil field have high salinity and poor compatibility, which leads to scaling and blockage in the formation or fracture propping zone during production. In this paper, a scale-inhibiting fracturing fluid system is developed which can prevent the formation of scale in the reservoir and solves the problem of scaling in the fracture propping zone at the Mahu oil field. Firstly, based on scale-inhibition rate, the performances of six commercial scale inhibitors were evaluated, including their acid and alkali resistance and temperature resistance. Then, the optimal scale inhibitors were combined with the fracturing fluid to obtain a scale-inhibiting fracturing fluid system. Its compatibility with other additives and scale-inhibition performance were evaluated. Finally, the system's drag-reduction ability was tested through the loop friction tester. The results showed that, among the six scale inhibitors, the organic phosphonic acid scale inhibitor SC-1 has the best performance regardless of high-temperature, alkaline, and mixed scale conditions. In addition, SC-1 has good compatibility with the fracturing fluid. The scale-inhibiting fracturing fluid system can effectively prevent scaling inside the large pores in the propping zone, and a scale-inhibiting efficiency of 96.29% was obtained. The new fracture system maintained a drag-reduction efficiency of about 75%, indicating that the addition of the scale inhibitor did not cause a significant influence on the drag-reduction efficiency of the fracturing fluid. Insufficient understanding of the microbial communities and associated microbial processes in geological reservoirs hinders the utilization of this rich data source for improved resource management. In this study, along with four interwell tracer tests at a 1478-m deep fractured crystalline-rock aquifer, we analyzed the microbial communities in the injected and produced water by high-throughput sequencing. The microbial community similarities across boreholes during an interwell flow scenario frequently encountered in reservoir development was explored. Despite the significant tracer recoveries (~30%) in all tracer tests and the cumulatively >100,000 L of exogenous water (carrying exogenous microbes) injected into the 10-m-scale reservoir, the overall structure of produced-fluid microbiome did not increasingly resemble that of the injectate. However, producers with better connectivity with the injector (based on tracer test results) did have more amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) that overlapped with those in the injectate. We identified possible drivers behind our observations and verified the practicality of repeated microbial sampling in the context of reservoir characterization and long-term monitoring. We highlight that injector-producer microbial profiling could provide insights on the relative connectivities across different producers with a given injector, and that the associated logistical needs may be comparable or even less than that of classic tracer tests. This research addresses a gap in the produced water management (PWM) literature by providing a conceptual framework to describe the connections of PWM to regional water budgets. We use southeastern New Mexico as a case study, because the region is facing looming shortfalls in water availability, and oil and gas production generate high volumes of produced water in the region. The framework was developed through expert interviews, analysis of industry data, and information gained at industry meetings; it is supported by detailed descriptions of material flows, information flows, and PWM decisions. Produced water management decisions may be connected to regional water budgets through dynamic complexities; however, modeling efforts exploring PWM often do not capture this complexity. Instead, PWM is most often based on the least expensive management and disposal alternatives, without considering short and long-term impacts to the regional water budget. On the other hand, regional water budgets do not include treated produced water as a potential resource, thus missing opportunities for exploring the impact of potential beneficial reuse. This is particularly important when there is a need to address water shortages in chronically water-short regions of the United States. At the same time, oil and gas production in the western United States is challenged by the need to dispose of large volumes of produced water. The increased concern about climate change is revolutionising the building materials sector, making sustainability and environmental friendliness increasingly important. This study evaluates the feasibility of incorporating recycled masonry aggregate (construction and demolition waste) in porous cement-based materials using carbonated water in mixing followed (or not) by curing in a CO2 atmosphere. The use of carbonated water can be very revolutionary in cement-based materials, as it allows hydration and carbonation to occur simultaneously. Calcite and portlandite in the recycled masonry aggregate and act as a buffer for the low-pH carbonated water. Carbonated water produced better mechanical properties and increased accessible water porosity and dry bulk density. The same behaviour was observed with natural aggregates. Carbonated water results in an interlaced shape of carbonate ettringite (needles) and fills the microcracks in the recycled masonry aggregate. Curing in CO2 together with the use of carbonated water (concomitantly) is not beneficial. This study provides innovative solutions for a circular economy in the construction sector using carbonated water in mixing (adsorbing CO2), which is very revolutionary as it allows carbonation to be applied to in-situ products. The rapid development of unconventional oil and gas (O&G) extraction around the world produces a significant amount of wastewater that requires appropriate management and disposal. Produced water (PW) is primarily disposed of through saltwater disposal wells, and other reuse/disposal methods include using PW for hydraulic fracturing, enhanced oil recovery, well drilling, evaporation ponds or seepage pits within the O&G field, and transferring PW offsite for management or reuse. Currently, 1–2% of PW in the U.S. is used outside the O&G field after treatment. With the considerable interest in PW reuse to reduce environmental implications and alleviate regional water scarcity, it is imperative to analyze the current regulatory framework for PW management and reuse. In the U.S., PW is subject to a complex set of federal, state, and sometimes local regulations to address the wide range of PW management, construction, and operation practices. Under the supervision of the U.S. Environment Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), different states have their own regulatory agencies and requirements based on state-specific practices and laws. This study analyzed the regulatory framework in major O&G-producing regions surrounding the management of PW, including relevant laws and jurisdictional illustrations of water rules and responsibilities, water quality standards, and PW disposal and current/potential beneficial reuse up to early 2022. The selected eastern states (based on the 98th meridian designated by the U.S. EPA as a tool to separate discharge permitting) include the Appalachian Basin (Marcellus and Utica shale areas of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia), Oklahoma, and Texas; and the western states include California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. These regions represent different regulations; climates; water quantities; quality diversities; and geologic, geographic, and hydrologic conditions. This review is particularly focused on the water quality standards, reuse practices and scenarios, risks assessment, knowledge gaps, and research needs for the potential reuse of treated PW outside of O&G fields. Given the complexity surrounding PW regulations and rules, this study is intended as preliminary guidance for PW management, and for identifying the knowledge gaps and research needs to reduce the potential impacts of treated PW reuse on the environment and public health. In recent years, environmental concerns have urged companies in the energy sector to modify their industrial activities to facilitate greater environmental stewardship. For example, the practice of unconventional oil and gas extraction has drawn the ire of regulators and various environmental groups due to its reliance on millions of barrels of fresh water—which is generally drawn from natural sources and public water supplies—for hydraulic fracturing well stimulation. Additionally, this process generates two substantial waste streams, which are collectively characterized as flowback and produced water. Whereas flowback water is comprised of various chemical additives that are used during hydraulic fracturing; produced water is a complex mixture of microbiota, inorganic and organic constituents derived from the petroliferous strata. This review will discuss the obstacles of managing and treating flowback and produced waters, concentrating on the hardest constituents to remove by current technologies and their effect on the environment if left untreated. Additionally, this work will address the opportunities associated with repurposing produced water for various applications as an alternative to subsurface injection, which has a number of environmental concerns. This work applies emergent self-organizing map (ESOM) techniques, a form of machine learning, in the multidimensional interpretation and prediction of rare earth element (REE) abundance in produced and geothermal waters in the United States. Visualization of the variables in the ESOM trained using the input data shows that each REE, with the exception of Eu, follows the same distribution patterns and that no single parameter appears to control their distribution. Cross-validation, using a random subsample of the starting data and only using major ions, shows that predictions are generally accurate to within an order of magnitude. Using the same approach, an abridged version of the U.S. Geological Survey Produced Waters Database, Version 2.3 (which includes both data from produced and geothermal waters) was mapped to the ESOM and predicted values were generated for samples that contained enough variables to be effectively mapped. Results show that in general, produced and geothermal waters are predicted to be enriched in REEs by an order of magnitude or more relative to seawater, with maximum predicted enrichments in excess of 1000-fold. Cartographic mapping of the resulting predictions indicates that maximum REE concentrations exceed values in seawater across the majority of geologic basins investigated and that REEs are typically spatially co-associated. The factors causing this co-association were not determined from ESOM analysis, but based on the information currently available, REE content in produced and geothermal waters is not directly controlled by lithology, reservoir temperature, or salinity. Environmental concerns with unconventional oil and gas development are frequently centered on elevated water usage and the induction of seismic events during waste disposal. Reuse of produced water for subsequent production well stimulation can effectively address these concerns, but the variability among such samples must be well understood. Twenty-four samples of wastewater from unconventional oil and gas development were collected from south and west Texas to assess their variability and feasibility for direct reuse. Bulk metrics were collected, including total organic carbon, total nitrogen, as well as total dissolved and suspended solids. The profiles of pertinent inorganic constituents were also evaluated. Variations were not only seen between regions but also among samples collected from the same region. For example, the average total organic carbon for Eagle Ford samples collected was 700 ± 500 mg/L, while samples collected from the Permian Basin featured an average total organic carbon concentration of 600 ± 900 mg/L. The Permian Basin total organic carbon ranged from 38 to 2600 mg/L. The total dissolved solids levels had the same variability between regions, with an average value for Eagle Ford of 20,000 ± 10,000 mg/L and a Permian Basin value of 150,000 ± 40,000 mg/L. However, samples were more reproducible within a given region. Collectively, the data indicate that the direct reuse of raw produced water for subsequent production well development without treatment is not feasible based on the reported reuse thresholds. Unconventional development wastewater samples from the Permian Basin were also compared to produced water values from conventional oil and gas wells in the same region, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. Treatment of produced water in oil fields has become a tough challenge for oil producers. Nanofiltration, a promising method for water treatment, has been proposed as a solution. The phase inversion technique was used for the synthesis of nanofiltration membranes of polyethersulfone embedded with graphene oxide nanoparticles and polyethersulfone embedded with titanium nanoribbons. As a realistic situation, water samples taken from the oil field were filtered using synthetic membranes at an operating pressure of 0.3 MPa. Physiochemical properties such as water flux, membrane morphology, flux recovery ratio, pore size and hydrophilicity were investigated. Additionally, filtration efficiency for removal of constituent ions, oil traces in water removal, and fouling tendency were evaluated. The constituent ions of produced water act as the scaling agent which threatens the blocking of the reservoir bores of the disposal wells. Adding graphene oxide (GO) and titanium nanoribbons (TNR) to polyethersulfone (PES) enhanced filtration efficiency, water flux, and anti-fouling properties while also boosting hydrophilicity and porosity. The PES-0.7GO membrane has the best filtering performance, followed by the PES-0.7TNR and pure-PES membranes, with chloride salt rejection rates of 81%, 78%, and 35%; oil rejection rates of 88%, 85%, and 71%; and water fluxes of 85, 82, and 42.5 kg/m2 h, respectively. Because of its higher hydrophilicity and physicochemical qualities, the PES-0.7GO membrane outperformed the PES-0.7TNR membrane. Nanofiltration membranes embedded with nanomaterial described in this work revealed encouraging long-term performance for oil-in-water trace separation and scaling agent removal. Ester exchange glycolysis of flexible polyurethane foam (PU) usually results in split-phase products, and the recovered polyether polyols are obtained after separation and purification, which can easily cause secondary pollution and redundancy. In this paper, we propose a green recycling process for the degradation of waste polyurethane foam by triblock polyether, and the degradation product can be used directly as a whole. The polyurethane foam can be completely degraded at a minimum mass ratio of 1.5:1. The secondary full utilization of the degradation product as a whole was directly synthesized into recycled polyurethane foam, and the compression cycle test proved that the excess glycolysis agent had less effect on the resilience of the recycled foam. The hydrophobic modification of the recycled foam was carried out, and the oil absorption performance of the recycled foam before and after the hydrophobic modification was compared. The oil absorption capacity for diesel oil ranged from 4.3 to 6.7, while the oil absorption performance of the hydrophobic modified recycled foam was significantly improved and had excellent reusability (absorption–desorption oil processes can be repeated at least 25 times). This economical and green process has large-scale application prospects, and the hydrophobic recycling foam can be applied to the field of oil and water separation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wastewaters generated by crude oil extraction processes, called "produced waters" (PWs), are complex solutions that contain organic compounds, mainly hydrocarbons, and often exhibit high salinity. The large amounts of PWs represent a global issue because of their environmental impact. An approach widely used in the oil industry is the reinjection of this wastewater into the extraction wells after a suitable treatment. The high salt concentration of such solutions may be used in salinity gradient technologies to produce green electricity. Among these technologies, reverse electrodialysis (RED) is one of the most promising. In this work, the application of RED for energy generation from two different real oil industry brines was investigated. An experimental campaign was performed by testing 10 × 10 cm2 units in long-run continuous operations, monitoring the performance for more than 25 days. Fouling phenomena, occurring during the continuous operation, decrease the unit performance and several anti-fouling strategies were adopted to tackle this issue. As a result, a positive net power density for up to 18 days of continuous operation was obtained. A maximum power density of about 2.5 W/m2 was observed, demonstrating how the RED technology could be an important strategy to harvest energy from an industrial waste. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Depressurization combined with brine injection is a potential method for field production of natural gas hydrate, which can significantly improve production efficiency and avoid secondary formation of hydrate. In this work, the experiments of hydrate production using depressurization combined with brine injection from a simulated excess-water hydrate reservoir were performed, and the effects of NaCl concentration on hydrate decomposition, temperature change, and heat transfer in the reservoir were investigated. The experimental results indicate that there is little gas production during depressurization in a excess-water hydrate reservoir, and the gas dissociated from hydrate is trapped in pores of sediments. The high-water production reduces the final gas recovery, which is lower than 70% in the experiments. The increasing NaCl concentration only effectively promotes gas production rate in the early stage. The final cumulative gas production and average gas production rate have little difference in different experiments. The NaCl concentration of the produced water is significantly higher than that which is in contact with hydrate in the sediments because the water produced by hydrate decomposition exists on the surface of undissociated hydrate. The high concentration of NaCl in the produced water from the reactor significantly reduces the promoting effect and efficiency of NaCl solution on hydrate decomposition. The injection of NaCl solution decreases the lowest temperature in sediments during hydrate production, and increases the sensible heat and heat transfer from environment for hydrate decomposition. The changes of temperature and resistance effectively reflect the distribution of the injected NaCl solution in the hydrate reservoir. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study created a framework for assessing the spatial and temporal distribution of the supply and demand of four potential produced water (PW) reuse options: agriculture, dust suppression, power generation, and river flow augmentation using Eddy and Lea counties in the southeastern New Mexico Permian Basin as a case study. Improving the PW management in the oil and gas industry is important in areas with limited water resources and increasing restrictions on PW disposal. One option in the PW management portfolio is fit-for-purpose reuse, but a lack of adequate information on PW quality, volumes, and the spatiotemporal distribution of PW supply and demand precludes its reuse. Using the framework, we determined that a 1.1-mile grid cell for data aggregation is a sufficient spatial scale for capturing the granular data needed for PW management decisions. The annual available PW supply for the two counties was estimated to be 45,460,875 m3 (36,870 acre-feet). The annual cumulative estimated demand was 647,656,261 m3 (525,064 acre-feet) for the four potential use cases—far exceeding PW supply. The maps generated using the framework illustrated that much of the supply and demand are spatially dispersed. The spatiotemporal analysis framework provides a generic methodology that can be used for PW management in other basins or for assessing alternative waters at the local and regional scales where management occurs.
