In this review, we present a short overview of the development of sol–gel glasses for application in the field of photonics, with a focus on some of the most interesting results obtained by our group and collaborators in that area. Our main attention is devoted to silicate glasses of different compositions, which are characterized by specific optical and spectroscopic properties for various applications, ranging from luminescent systems to light-confining structures and memristors. In particular, the roles of rare-earth doping, matrix composition, the densification process and the fabrication protocol on the structural, optical and spectroscopic properties of the developed photonic systems are discussed through appropriate examples. Some achievements in the fabrication of oxide sol–gel optical waveguides and of micro- and nanostructures for the confinement of light are also briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oxyfluoride glass-ceramics (OxGCs) with the molar composition 80SiO2-20(1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4) were prepared with sol-gel following the "pre-crystallised nanoparticles route" with promising optical results. The preparation of 1.5 mol % Eu3+-doped NaGdF4 nanoparticles, named 1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4, was optimised and characterised using XRD, FTIR and HRTEM. The structural characterisation of 80SiO2-20(1.5Eu3+: NaGdF4) OxGCs prepared from these nanoparticles' suspension was performed by XRD and FTIR revealing the presence of hexagonal and orthorhombic NaGdF4 crystalline phases. The optical properties of both nanoparticles' phases and the related OxGCs were studied by measuring the emission and excitation spectra together with the lifetimes of the 5D0 state. The emission spectra obtained by exciting the Eu3+-O2− charge transfer band showed similar features in both cases corresponding the higher emission intensity to the 5D0→7F2 transition that indicates a non-centrosymmetric site for Eu3+ ions. Moreover, time-resolved fluorescence line-narrowed emission spectra were performed at a low temperature in OxGCs to obtain information about the site symmetry of Eu3+ in this matrix. The present paper focuses on the silica-scaled chrysophytes from two tropical islands: Con Son (Con Dao Archipelago) and Phu Quoc, located in Viet Nam. Electron microscopy revealed fifty-seven taxa, of which forty-one belong to the genus Mallomonas. The others are species of the genera Synura (5), Paraphysomonas (8), Spiniferomonas (1), Chrysosphaerella (1) and Lepidochromonas (1). This is the first report of the genus Lepidochromonas from Viet Nam. In addition, two species from the genus Paraphysomonas are reported for the first time in the country. Six taxa from the genus Mallomonas and five taxa from the genus Paraphysomonas were not identifiable to the lower rank and may represent new species for science. The overall diversity of the silica-scaled chrysophytes of the islands is very high. A number of rare taxa endemic to Southeast Asia were found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tacrine (THA), the first clinically effective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor and the first approved drug for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), was withdrawn from the market due to its side effects, particularly its hepatotoxicity. Nowadays, THA serves as a valuable scaffold for the design of novel agents potentially applicable for AD treatment. One such compound, namely 7-methoxytacrine (7-MEOTA), exhibits an intriguing profile, having suppressed hepatotoxicity and concomitantly retaining AChE inhibition properties. Another interesting class of AChE inhibitors represents Huprines, designed by merging two fragments of the known AChE inhibitors--THA and (-)-huperzine A. Several members of this compound family are more potent human AChE inhibitors than the parent compounds. The most promising are so-called huprines X and Y. Here, we report the design, synthesis, biological evaluation, and in silico studies of 2-methoxyhuprine that amalgamates structural features of 7-MEOTA and huprine Y in one molecule. The unique properties of the Eu3+ ion make it a powerful spectroscopic tool to investigate structure or follow processes and mechanisms in several high-tech application areas such as biology and health, structural engineering, environment monitoring systems and quantum technology, mainly concerning photonics. The traditional method is to exploit the unique photoluminescent properties of Eu3+ ions to understand complex dynamical processes and obtain information useful to develop materials with specific characteristics. The objective of this review is to focus on the use of Eu3+ optical spectroscopy in some condensed matter issues. After a short presentation of the more significant properties of the Eu3+ ion, some examples regarding its use as a probe of the local structure in sol–gel systems are presented. Another section is devoted to dynamical processes such as the important technological role of nanocrystals as rare-earth sensitizers. The appealing effect of the site-selection memory, observed when exciting different sites into the 5D1 state, which the 5D0 → 7F0 emission band reflects following the sites' distribution, is also mentioned. The reported work was focused on sol–gel-derived organically modified and fluorinated silica coatings deposited on elastic polymeric foil. The structure and topography of the coatings were tested by infrared spectroscopy and microscopic studies. The functional properties were determined using thermal analysis, surface analysis, and oxygen permeability tests. The barrier feature of the investigated materials against oxygen was correlated with the properties of the coatings. The hybrid (organic–inorganic) structure of the coatings was proven, demonstrating the presence of a silica network modified with alkyl and fluoroalkyl groups since precursors with the isooctyl group or different lengths of the fluoroalkyl chains were used for the syntheses. The coatings were free of defects and had a smooth surface except for the sample containing the longest fluoroalkyl chain (perfluorododecyl group), which showed a wrinkle-like surface. The hydrophobic character of the coatings increased, whereas the oxygen permeation coefficient values decreased (reaching a fourfold lower coefficient in comparison to the bare substrate) with a higher content of the fluorinated carbon atoms in the structure. The results were enriched by the information from the thermomechanical analysis as well as nanoindentation and scratch tests giving values of the glass transition temperature, thermal expansion coefficient, coatings adhesion, and hardness of the investigated systems. Looking for upconverting biocompatible nanoparticles, we have prepared by the sol–gel method, silica–calcia glass nanopowders doped with different concentration of Tm3+ and Yb3+ ions (Tm3+ from 0.15 mol% up to 0.5 mol% and Yb3+ from 1 mol% up to 4 mol%) and characterized their structure, morphology, and optical properties. X-ray diffraction patterns indicated an amorphous phase of the silica-based glass with partial crystallization of samples with a higher content of lanthanides ions. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the average size of particles decreased with increasing lanthanides content. The upconversion (UC) emission spectra and fluorescence lifetimes were registered under near infrared excitation (980 nm) at room temperature to study the energy transfer between Yb3+ and Tm3+ at various active ions concentrations. Characteristic emission bands of Tm3+ ions in the range of 350 nm to 850 nm were observed. To understand the mechanism of Yb3+–Tm3+ UC energy transfer in the SiO2–CaO powders, the kinetics of luminescence decays were studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to its low contrast, narrow banded, and emerged to the output imaging attribute scale, facial skin tissue is difficult to extract from dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstructions. Furthermore, there is a challenge of balancing the indication and patient-specific factors and imaging dosage to make it both safe and diagnostically effective for successful treatment planning. These issues make a new frontier for facial skin and soft tissue diagnostic applications driven by sparse dental and low-dose CBCT data. In this study, a new segmentation enhancement method for low-contrast and narrow-banded substances is proposed based on our previous work on selective anatomy analysis iterative reconstruction (SA2IR). The purpose of the proposed method is to segment facial skin tissue based on combinatorial optimization and previously known facial soft tissue structure anatomy. Our results using this method indicated that the skin thickness was much more easily and more quickly identified than with conventional ultrasonic scanning methods. This method holds the potential to be an assisting tool for studying linage of anthropometrics, forensics, human archaeology, and some narrow medico-dental applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dental cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a powerful tool in clinical treatment planning, especially in a digital dentistry platform. Currently, the "as low as diagnostically acceptable" (ALADA) principle and diagnostic ability are a trade-off in most of the 3D integrated applications, especially in the low radio-opaque densified tissue structure. The CBCT benefits in comprehensive diagnosis and its treatment prognosis for post-operation predictability are clinically known in modern dentistry. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm called the selective anatomy analytic iteration reconstruction (SA2IR) algorithm for the sparse-projection set. The algorithm was simulated on a phantom structure analogous to a patient's head for geometric similarity. The proposed algorithm is projection-based. Interpolated set enrichment and trio-subset enhancement were used to reduce the generative noise and maintain the scan's clinical diagnostic ability. The results show that proposed method was highly applicable in medico-dental imaging diagnostics fusion for the computer-aided treatment planning, because it had significant generative noise reduction and lowered computational cost when compared to the other common contemporary algorithms for sparse projection, which generate a low-dosed CBCT reconstruction.
