The diffusion processes during the contact melting at the boundary of explosively welded VT1-0 titanium with CuNi19 (melchior) and CuNi45 (constantan) alloy composites were studied. Heat treatment of composites led to the formation of the interaction zone at the joint boundary. The interaction zone in VT1-0 + CuNi19 consists of TiCuNi and αTi + Ti2Cu(Ni) continuous layers as well as a mixture of TiNi(Cu) + TiCu(Ni) + Ti2Cu(Ni) intermetallics. It has been shown that an increase in the nickel content in the case of VT1-0 + CuNi45 composite leads to a decrease in the temperature of contact melting, a change in its mechanism, an increase in the titanium content in the interaction zone, and the appearance of additional Ti2Ni(Cu) intermetallic in its composition. Olivine, one of the most abundant silicates on earth, thermodynamically captures CO2 in relevant amounts during its dissolution. Upscaling the use of this mineral as a replacement for sand or gravel may contribute to reduce concentrations of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. However, the reliable quantification of weathering rates and prognoses for effects of various environmental conditions on weathering are lacking. This currently inhibits the monitoring, reporting and verification of CO2 capture and hampers the exploitation of the carbon dioxide removal economy. A mineral dissolution model was developed, and olivine weathering rates were directly coupled to particle sizes of the ground mineral. A particle size-dependent calculation approach, based on the shrinking core model, showed faster weathering rates as compared to a single-size, monodisperse approach. This provided a better underpinning of the prediction of the overall weathering and, consequently, the sequestration rate of CO2. Weathering of olivine releases nickel, which is incorporated in the mineral. The dissolution model was coupled to advanced biotic ligand models (BLM) for nickel in order to assess potential chronic ecotoxicological risks upon release in the environment. Coordination-induced spin crossover (CISCO) in nickel(II) porphyrinates is an intriguing phenomenon that is interesting from both fundamental and practical standpoints. However, in most cases, realization of this effect requires extensive synthetic protocols or extreme concentrations of extra-ligands. Herein we show that CISCO effect can be prompted for the commonly available nickel(II) tetraphenylporphyrinate, NiTPP, upon deposition of this complex at the air/water interface together with a ruthenium(II) phthalocyaninate, CRPcRu(pyz)2, bearing two axial pyrazine ligands. The latter was used as a molecular guiderail to align Ni···Ru···Ni metal centers for pyrazine coordination upon lateral compression of the system, which helps bring the two macrocycles closer together and forces the formation of Ni–pyz bonds. The fact of Ni(II) porphyrinate switching from low- to high-spin state upon acquiring additional ligands can be conveniently observed in situ via reflection-absorption UV-vis spectroscopy. The reversible nature of this interaction allows for dissociation of Ni–pyz bonds, and thus, change of nickel cation spin state, upon expansion of the monolayer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nickel nanopillar arrays were electrodeposited onto silicon substrates using porous alumina membranes as a template. The characterization of the samples was done by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and alternating force gradient magnetometry. Ni nanostructures were directly grown on Si by galvanostatic and potentiostatic electrodeposition techniques in three remarkable charge transfer configurations. Differences in the growth mechanisms of the nanopillars were observed, depending on the deposition method. A high correlation between the height of the nanopillars and the charge synthesis was observed irrespective of the electrochemical technique. The magnetization measurements demonstrated a main dependence with the height of the nanopillars. The synthesis of Ni nanosystems with a controllable aspect ratio provides an effective way to produce well-ordered networks for wide scientific applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Titanium carbide (TiC) reinforced nickel (Ni) matrix composites were processed via mechanical alloying (MA) followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Mechanical alloying has gained special attention as a powerful non-equilibrium process for fabricating amorphous and nanocrystalline materials, whereas spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a unique technique for processing dense and near net shape bulk alloys with homogenous microstructure. TiC reinforcement varied from 5 to 50 wt.% into nickel matrix to investigate its effect on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of Ni-TiC composites. All Ni-TiC composites powder was mechanically alloyed using planetary high energy ball mill with 400 rpm and ball to powder ratio (BPR) 15:1 for 24 h. Bulk Ni-TiC composites were then sintered via SPS process at 50 MPa pressure and 900–1200 °C temperature. All Ni-TiC composites exhibited higher microhardness and compressive strength than pure nickel due to the presence of homogeneously distributed TiC particles within the nickel matrix, matrix grain refinement, and excellent interfacial bonding between nickel and TiC reinforcement. There is an increase in Ni-TiC composites microhardness with an increase in TiC reinforcement from 5 to 50 wt.%, and it reaches the maximum value of 900 HV for Ni-50TiC composites. Zeolites are materials with known sorption properties. The sorption is thought to progress mainly by ion exchange with Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+ or H+ from the zeolite exchange sites. The aim of the study was to compare the sorption properties of natural and synthetic zeolites on the example of the removal of selected metals from aqueous acidic solutions. Uptake experiments for selected ions of chromium, manganese, selenium, nickel, cobalt, and iron were performed using the batch and kinetic column methods. The sorption of the individual metal ions in mg per 1g of sorbent was determined for each sorbent. The relative affinity sequence of the examined cations toward the various sorbent was presented. The Langmuir model was used to model the adsorption equilibrium. Vermiculite under 1 mm of diameter (SF), Na-X, and Na-A were proved to be the most suitable for the individual uptake of studied metal ions. It was observed that the behavior of selenium ions differed from the remaining ones which was interpreted that selenium undergoes adsorption in the anionic form. The fixed-bed column studies were performed using Na-A, ensuring the sorption of selenium in the presence of iron(III) ions. The experiments were conducted using Na-X zeolite pre-loaded by Fe(III) as well as unmodified sorbent eluted by an equimolar mixture containing 100 ppm of Fe and Se. Obtained results prove that selenium sorption improves if other metal ions such as iron appear in the acidic solution. The plasma paste boriding process was used for production of the borided layers on pure nickel and nickel-chromium alloys. The produced layers consisted of nickel borides only (in the case of nickel) or a nickel and chromium borides mixture (in the case Ni–Cr alloys). The objective of this investigation was to indicate the importance of the presence of chromium for corrosion resistance of non-borided alloys, as well as to indicate the influence of phase composition of borided layers on their corrosion resistance. Pure nickel was characterized by higher corrosion resistance, in comparison to the nickel-based alloys. Increased chromium content in nickel alloys resulted in their high susceptibility for pitting corrosion. All borided samples were characterized by higher corrosion resistance than the non-borided samples. However, the phase composition of borided layers influenced their corrosion resistance. Due to the microstructure which consisted of one type of borides (nickel borides), borided nickel had the highest resistance to corrosion, whereas the presence of chromium borides in layers produced on nickel-chromium alloys caused a decrease in corrosion resistance. An overview of the reported electrochemistry studies on the chemistry of the element for targets for isotope production in ionic liquids (ILs) is provided. The majority of investigations have been dedicated to two aspects of the reactive element chemistry. The first part of this review presents description of the cyclotron targets properties, especially physicochemical characterization of irradiated elements. The second part is devoted to description of the electrodeposition procedures leading to obtain elements or their alloys coatings (e.g., nickel, uranium) as the targets for cyclotron and reactor generation of the radioisotopes. Froth flotation is a multifaceted complex process which is water intensive. The use of recycled water as an alternative source of water to meet water demands of the process may introduce deleterious inorganic ions that affect the mineral surface, pulp chemistry, and reagent action, hence the need to establish whether threshold ion concentrations exist beyond which flotation performance will be adversely affected. This is of paramount importance in informing appropriate recycle streams and allowing simple, cost-effective water treatment methods to be applied. Here we report that increasing ionic strengths of synthetic plant water (SPW); 3, 5, and 10 SPW respectively, resulted in an increase in water recovery in the order 0.073 mol·dm−3 (3 SPW) < 0.121 mol·dm−3 (5 SPW) < 0.242 mol·dm−3 (10 SPW), indicating an increase in froth stability as higher water recoveries are linked to increased froth stabilities. This behavior is linked to the action of inorganic electrolytes on bubble coalescence which is reported in literature. There was, however, no significant effect on the valuable mineral recovery. Spiking 3 SPW to 400 mg/L Ca2+ resulted in higher copper and nickel grades compared to 3 SPW, 5 SPW, and 10 SPW and was deemed to be the Ca2+ ion threshold concentration for this study since 3 SPW spiked with further Ca2+ to a concentration of 800 mg/L resulted in a decrease in the concentrate grade. The spiking of 3 SPW with Mg2+ resulted in higher copper and nickel grades compared to all other synthetic plant water conditions tested in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work presents quantitative changes of nickel in soil and plants under the influence of compost and fly ash. The research was carried out in a 3-year experiment on medium soil fertilised with compost or fly ash. The plants: narrow leaf lupine (Lupinus angustifolius L.), camelina (Camelina sativa L.), and oat (Avena sativa L.) were planted in consecutive years. The soil from the experiment was subjected to extraction by sequential analysis with the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) method, and single extractions using 1 mol·dm−3 HCl and DTPA solutions, obtaining the amount of nickel in various combinations with the soil solid phase. Total contents of the metal in soil and cultivated plants were determined. On the basis of Ni contents in the soil and cultivated plants, the bioconcentration factors and the risk assessment code were calculated. The type of amendments had a significant impact on the nickel content in lupine, for camelina and oat was the greatest in the control conditions. The differences between the amounts of Ni determined for bioconcentration factors were significant and depended on the amendments and nickel obtained by different methods. Regardless of the experimental conditions, the amount of Ni in the exchangeable bonds (Fr. I) had the greatest impact on the content of Ni in lupine and oat, whereas NiDTPA in the case of camelina. Introducing new inexpensive materials for supercapacitors application with high energy density and stability, is the current research challenge. In this work, Silver doped carbon xerogels have been synthesized via a simple sol-gel method. The silver doped carbon xerogels are further surface functionalized with different loadings of nickel cobaltite (1 wt.%, 5 wt.%, and 10 wt.%) using a facile impregnation process. The morphology and textural properties of the obtained composites are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen physisorption analysis. The silver doped carbon xerogels display a higher surface area and larger mesopore volume compared to the un-doped carbon xerogels and hierarchically porous structure is obtained for all materials. The hybrid composites have been utilized as electrode materials for symmetric supercapacitors in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Among all the hybrid composites, silver doped carbon xerogel functionalized with 1 wt.% nickel cobaltite (NiCo1/Ag-CX) shows the best supercapacitor performance: high specific capacitance (368 F g−1 at 0.1 A g−1), low equivalent series resistance (1.9 Ω), high rate capability (99% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles at 1 A g−1), and high energy and power densities (50 Wh/Kg, 200 W/Kg at 0.1 A g−1). It is found that the specific capacitance does not only depend on surface area, but also on others factors such as particle size, uniform particle distribution, micro-mesoporous structure, which contribute to abundant active sites and fast charge, and ion transfer rates between the electrolyte and the active sites. Sealing as a post treatment of anodized aluminum is required to enhance the corrosion resistance by filling nanopores, which allow the penetration of corrosive media toward the base aluminum. We designed a mixed sealing solution with nickel acetate and ammonium fluoride by modifying traditional nickel fluoride cold sealing. The concentration of mixed sealing solution affected the reaction rate of sealing and corrosion current density of anodized aluminum alloy. The higher concentration of mixed sealing solution improved the sealing rate, which was represented by a decrease of corrosion current density of anodized aluminum alloy. However, a mixed sealing solution with 2/3 concentration of general nickel fluoride sealing solution operated at room temperature showed the lowest corrosion current density compared to traditional methods (e.g., nickel fluoride cold sealing (NFCS) and nickel acetate hot sealing) and other mixed sealing solutions. Moreover, the mixed sealing solution with 2/3 concentration of general NFCS had a lower risk for over sealing, which increases the corrosion current density by excessive dissolution of anodic oxide. Therefore, the mixed sealing solution with optimized conditions designed in this work possibly provides a new method for enhancing the corrosion resistance of anodized aluminum alloys. Experiments were conducted for the study of the effect of cysteine addition on the microstructure of nanocrystalline Ni films electrodeposited from a nickel sulfate-based bath. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the nanostructure of Ni layers processed with cysteine addition was also investigated. It was found that with increasing cysteine content in the bath, the grain size decreased, while the dislocation density and the twin fault probability increased. Simultaneously, the hardness increased due to cysteine addition through various effects. Saturation in the microstructure and hardness was achieved at cysteine contents of 0.3–0.4 g/L. Moreover, the texture changed from (220) to (200) with increasing the concentration of cysteine. The hardness of the Ni films processed with the addition of 0.4 g/L cysteine (∼6800 MPa) was higher than the values obtained for other additives in the literature (<6000 MPa). This hardness was further enhanced to ∼8400 MPa when the Ni film was heated up to 500 K. It was revealed that the hardness remained as high as 6000 MPa even after heating up to 750 K, while for other additives, the hardness decreased below 3000 MPa at the same temperature. The primary energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from nickel smelting products have been assessed through case studies using a process model based on mass and energy balance. The required primary energy for producing nickel metal, nickel oxide, ferronickel, and nickel pig iron is 174 GJ/t alloy (174 GJ/t contained Ni), 369 GJ/t alloy (485 GJ/t contained Ni), 110 GJ/t alloy (309 GJ/t contained Ni), and 60 GJ/t alloy (598 GJ/t contained Ni), respectively. Furthermore, the associated GHG emissions are 14 tCO2-eq/t alloy (14 tCO2-eq/t contained Ni), 30 t CO2-eq/t alloy (40 t CO2-eq/t contained Ni), 6 t CO2-eq/t alloy (18 t CO2-eq/t contained Ni), and 7 t CO2-eq/t alloy (69 t CO2-eq/t contained Ni). A possible carbon emission reduction can be observed by comparing ore type, ore grade, and electricity source, as well as allocation strategy. The suggested process model overcomes the limitation of a conventional life cycle assessment study which considers the process as a 'black box' and allows for an identification of further possibilities to implement sustainable nickel production. In this study, the mechanism of nickel nanoparticle formation from its hydroxide was analyzed. Metallic nickel nanoparticles were obtained through the hydroxide's reduction under hydrogen. Nickel hydroxides were produced from nickel (II) nitrate hexahydrate and NaOH by deposition under various initial conditions. The influence of washing treatment on the dispersion of obtained nickel powders was studied. The washing procedure of precipitates was carried out by centrifugation, ultrasonic treatment, and decantation. X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy methods were used for nanoparticle characterization. Based on the resulting data, a model of the Ni(OH)2 aggregate structure after deposition was proposed. The biomass-based carbons anode materials have drawn significant attention because of admirable electrochemical performance on account of their nontoxicity and abundance resources. Herein, a novel type of nickel-embedded carbon material (nickel@carbon) is prepared by carbonizing the dough which is synthesized by mixing wheat flour and nickel nitrate as anode material in lithium-ion batteries. In the course of the carbonization process, the wheat flour is employed as a carbon precursor, while the nickel nitrate is introduced as both a graphitization catalyst and a pore-forming agent. The in situ formed Ni nanoparticles play a crucial role in catalyzing graphitization and regulating the carbon nanocrystalline structure. Mainly owing to the graphite-like carbon microcrystalline structure and the microporosity structure, the NC-600 sample exhibits a favorable reversible capacity (700.8 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 after 200 cycles), good rate performance (51.3 mAh g−1 at 20 A g−1), and long-cycling durability (257.25 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 after 800 cycles). In this study, powder metallurgy was used to fabricate titanium nitride/nickel metal-matrix composites. First, titanium and nickel powders with weight ratios of 20:80, 50:50 and 80:20 were dry mixed for 24 h. After cold isostatic pressing, the green compacts were soaked in a water-based hot forging lubricant and sintered at 850, 950 and 1050 °C for 1.5 h in an air atmosphere. The effects of the amounts of titanium powder and the sintering temperatures on the mechanical properties (hardness, wear resistance and compressive strength) of the composites were investigated. The results indicated that titanium gradually transformed into titanium nitride near the surface after sintering due to the carbothermal reduction reaction; this transformation was observed to significantly increase the hardness. In addition, an oxygen-rich film was observed to form between the titanium nitride particles and the nickel matrix. An optimum sintering temperature of 950 °C provides the composites (titanium–nickel weight ratios of 20:80) the best mechanical properties (wear resistance and compressive strength) among other groups. Furthermore, increasing the titanium content to 80% in the composite increased the hardness; however, the wear resistance and compressive strength decreased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nickel is one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants and its removal from wastewater is an important task. The capacity of a mineral–organic hybrid adsorbent, consisting of Shewanella xiamenensis biofilm and zeolite (clinoptilolite of the Chola deposit), to remove metal ions from nickel-containing batch systems under different experimental conditions was tested. The obtained biosorbent was characterized using neutron activation, SEM, and FTIR techniques. It was established that maximum removal of cations, up to 100%, was achieved at pH 6.0. Several mathematical models were applied to describe the equilibrium and kinetics data. The maximum adsorption capacity of the hybrid biosorbent, calculated using the Langmuir model, varied from 3.6 to 3.9 mg/g. Negative Gibbs energy values and positive ∆H° values indicate the spontaneous and endothermic character of the biosorption process. The effects of several parameters (pH and biosorbent dosage) on Ni(II) removal from real effluent, containing nickel with a concentration of 125 mg/L, were investigated. The optimal pH for Ni(II) removal was 5.0–6.0 and an increase of sorbent dosage from 0.5 to 2.0 led to an increase in Ni(II) removal from 17% to 27%. At two times effluent dilution, maximum Ni(II) removal of 26% was attained at pH 6.0 and sorbent dosage of 1.0 g. A 12-fold effluent dilution resulted in the removal of 72% of Ni(II) at the same pH and sorbent dosage values. Application of liquid organic hydrogen carriers, such as "methylcyclohexane (MCH)–toluene" chemical couple, is one of the promising approaches for hydrogen storage and transportation. In the present study, copper-modified nickel catalysts with high metal loading of 75 wt% were synthesized via heterophase sol–gel technique, and investigated in the dehydrogenation of MCH. Two approaches towards the copper introduction were applied. The catalyst samples prepared via wetness impregnation of the nickel sol–gel catalyst are characterized by more effective Ni-Cu interaction compared to those where two metals were introduced simultaneously by the mixing of their solid precursors. As a result, the "impregnated" catalysts revealed higher selectivity towards toluene. The addition of copper up to 30 wt% of total metal content was shown to increase significantly toluene selectivity and yield without a noticeable decrease in MCH conversion. The catalyst with the active component including 80 wt% of Ni and 20 wt% of Cu demonstrated 96% and 89% toluene selectivity at 40% and 80% MCH conversion, respectively. Ni-based catalysts (Ni-γ-Al2O3, Ni-HTASO5 and Ni-CeZrOx) were prepared by impregnation method and characterized by BET, AAS, XRD, H2-TPR, CO-TPD, NH3-TPD, XPS, TG-DSC-MS and Raman spectroscopies. Using CeZrOx-modified Al2O3 (HTASO5) as support, the catalyst exhibited good catalytic performance (TOFCH4 = 8.0 × 10−2 s−1, TOFH2 = 10.5 × 10−2 s−1) and carbon resistance for steam-methane reforming (SMR) reaction. Moreover, CeZrOx was able to enhance water-gas shift (WGS) reaction for more hydrogen production. It was found that the addition of CeZrOx could increase the content of active nickel precursor on the surface of the catalyst, which was beneficial to the decomposition of water and methane on Ni-HTASO5. Furthermore, Ni-HTASO5 could decrease the strong acid sites of the catalyst, which would not only contribute to the formation of low graphited carbon, but also decrease the amount of carbon deposition. Hierarchical porous birnessite-MnO2-based nanostructure composite materials were prepared on a nickel foam substrate by a successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction method (SILAR). Following composition with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), the as-obtained MnO2, MnO2/rGO and MnO2/rGO-MWCNT materials exhibited pore size distributions of 2–8 nm, 5–15 nm and 2–75 nm, respectively. For the MnO2/rGO-MWCNT material in particular, the addition of MWCNT and rGO enhanced the superb distribution of micropores, mesopores and macropores and greatly improved the electrochemical performance. The as-obtained MnO2/rGO-MWCNT/NF electrode showed a specific capacitance that reached as high as 416 F·g−1 at 1 A·g−1 in 1 M Na2SO4 aqueous electrolyte and also an excellent rate capability and high cycling stability, with a capacitance retention of 85.6% after 10,000 cycles. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses showed a low resistance charge transfer resistance for the as-prepared MnO2/rGO-MWCNT/NF nanostructures. In this study, the effect of precipitates on the surface mechanical properties in the presence of hydrogen (H) is investigated by in situ electrochemical nanoindentation. The nickel superalloy 718 is subjected to three different heat treatments, leading to different sizes of the precipitates: (i) solution annealing (SA) to eliminate all precipitates, (ii) the as-received (AR) sample with fine, dispersed precipitates, and (iii) the over-aged (OA) specimen with coarser precipitates. The nanoindentation is performed using a conical tip, and a new method of reverse imaging is employed to calculate the nano-hardness. The results show that the hardness of the SA sample is significantly affected by H diffusion. However, it could be recovered by removing the H from its matrix by applying an anodic potential. Since the precipitates in the OA and AR samples are different, they are influenced by H differently. The hardness increase for the OA sample is more significant in − 1200 m V , while for the AR specimen, the H is more effective in − 1500 m V. In addition, the pop-in load is reduced when the samples are exposed to cathodic charging, and it cannot be fully recovered by switching to an anodic potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exposure to even low concentrations of heavy metals can be toxic to aquatic organisms, especially during embryonic development. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the toxicity of nickel and cadmium in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of each metal alone or in combination from 4 h through to 72 h postfertilization. Neither metal altered survival, but individual and combined exposures decreased hatching rate. Whereas cadmium did not affect total body length, trunk area, eye diameter, or eye area, nickel alone and in combination with cadmium decreased each morphological parameter. Yolk sac area, an index of metabolic rate, was not affected by nickel, but was larger in embryos exposed to high cadmium concentrations or nickel and cadmium combined at high concentrations. Nickel decreased spontaneous movement, whereas cadmium alone or nickel and cadmium combined had no effect. Neither metal altered elicited movement, but nickel and cadmium combined decreased elicited movement. Myosin protein expression in skeletal muscle was not altered by cadmium exposure. However, exposure to nickel at low concentrations and combined exposure to nickel and cadmium decreased myosin expression. Overall, nickel was more toxic than cadmium. In conclusion, we observed that combined exposures had a greater effect on movement than gross morphology, and no significant additive or synergistic interactions were present. These results imply that nickel and cadmium are toxic to developing embryos, even at very low exposure concentrations, and that these metals act via different mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles have proved to be effective in the remediation of chlorinated compounds and heavy metals from contaminated soil. The present study aimed to analyze the performance of nanoparticles synthesized from low-cost biomass (green leaves) as chemical precursors, namely Azadirachta indica (neem) and Mentha longifolia (mint) leaves. These leaves were chosen because huge amounts of them are present in the region of Vellore. These nanoparticles were used to remove lead and nickel from contaminated soil. Characterization of nZVI particles was conducted using the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller isotherm (BET) techniques. Remediation was performed on two different soil samples, polluted with lead or nickel at an initial metal concentration around 250 mg/kg of soil. The results revealed that after 30 days, the lead removal efficiency with 0.1 g of nZVI particles/kg of soil was 26.9% by particles synthesized using neem leaves and 62.3% by particles synthesized using mint leaves. Similarly, nickel removal efficiency with 0.1 g of particles/kg of soil was 33.2% and 50.6%, respectively, by particles using neem and mint leaves. When the nanoparticle concentration was doubled, Pb and Ni removal improved, with similar trends obtained at a lower dosage (0.1 g of particles/kg of soil). These first results evidenced that: (1) the nZVI particles synthesized using green leaves had the potential to remove Pb and Ni from contaminated soil; (2) the neem-derived particles gave better Ni removal efficiency than Pb one; (3) the mint-derived particles showed better Pb removal efficiency than Ni one; (4) the highest removal efficiency for both metals was achieved with the mint-derived particles; (5) double higher dosage did not greatly improve the results. The natural mineral, weathered sand of basalt (WSB), was utilized to investigate whether nickel can be removed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were performed to characterize WSB. The effects of various conditions, i.e., contact time, pH, WSB dosage, particle size of WSB, and temperature were analyzed. The experimental data were analyzed by two widely used equations, i.e., Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results obtained revealed that the WSB adsorption process was more consistent with the Langmuir model than the Freundlich equation. The kinetics data fitted well into the pseudo-second-order model. The findings of the present study indicate that WSB could be used for removing nickel from aqueous solution. Moreover, its concentration can be reduced from 1.0 mg/L to ND (not detected, below the device limit <0.01 μg/L) under the optimal condition. Therefore, WSB is considered to be usable as one of the adsorbents for nickel removal in water. In addition, since heavy metals are often present in low concentrations in water, it is considered that WSB can be applied as one of the effective alternatives for removing low-concentration nickel. This study investigated the effect of ionic strength and background electrolytes on the biosorption of Ni2+ from aqueous solutions by the acorn shell of Quercus crassipes Humb. & Bonpl. (QCS). A NaCl ionic strength of 0.2 mM was established to have no effect on the Ni2+ biosorption and the biosorption capacity of the heavy metal decreased as the ionic strength increased from 2 to 2000 mM. The background electrolytes (KCl, NaNO3, Na2SO4, CaCl2, MgSO4, and MgCl2) had no adverse effects on the biosorption of Ni2+ at a concentration of 0.2 mM. However, at background electrolyte concentrations of 2 and 20 mM, divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) had greater negative effects on the biosorption of Ni2+ compared to the monovalent cations (Na+ and K+). Additionally, the SO42− and Cl− anions affected the biosorption of Ni2+. The fractional power, Elovich, and pseudo-second order models represented the kinetic processes of the biosorption of Ni2+ adequately. The results show that QCS can be a promising and low-cost biosorbent for removing Ni2+ ions from aqueous solutions containing various types of impurities with different concentrations.
