Simple Summary: Enteric methane (CH4) production in cattle accounts for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. Measurement of enteric methane emission is complex, expensive, and large-scale measurement is impractical. Therefore, in the absence of measurements, modeling can be used to predict CH4 production and help investigate mitigation options. In this study, we used dietary nutrient composition (g/kg), nutrients (kg/day), energy (MJ/day), and energy and organic matter (OM) digestibility (g/kg) as predictors of CH4 production to develop linear and nonlinear statistical models for predicting enteric methane emission from beef and dairy cattle and to evaluate the few available models. The objective of this study was to develop linear and nonlinear statistical models for predicting enteric methane emissions from beef and dairy cattle (EME, MJ/day). Ration nutrient composition (g/kg), nutrient (kg/day), energy (MJ/day), and energy and organic matter (OM) digestibility (g/kg) were used as predictors of CH4 production. Three databases of beef cattle, dairy cattle, and their combinations were developed using 34 published experiments to model EME predictions. Linear and nonlinear regression models were developed using a mixed-model approach to predict CH4 production (MJ/day) of individual animals based on feed composition. For the beef cattle database, Equation methane (MJ/d) = 1.6063 (±0.757) + 0.4256 (±0.0745) × DMI + 1.2213 (±0.1715) × NDFI + −0.475 (±0.446) × ADFI had the smallest RMSPE (21.99%), with 83.51% of this coming from random error and a regression bias was 16.49%. For the dairy cattle database, the RMSPE was minimized (15.99%) for methane (MJ/d) = 0.3989 (±1.1073) + 0.8685 (±0.1585) × DMI + 0.6675 (±0.4264) × NDFI, of which 85.11% was from random error and the regression deviation was 14.89%. When the beef and dairy cattle databases were combined, the RMSPE was minimized (24.4%) for methane(MJ/d) = −0.3496 (±0.723) + 0.5941 (±0.0851) × DMI + 1.388 (±0.2203) × NDFI + −0.027 (±0.4223) × ADFI, of which 85.62% was from the random error and the regression bias was 14.38%. Among the nonlinear equations for the three databases, the DMI-based exponential model outperformed the other nonlinear models, but the predictability and goodness of fit of the equations did not improve compared to the linear model. The existing equations overestimate CH4 production with low accuracy and precision. Wastewater treatment (WWT) contributes 2–9% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The noticeable uncertainty in emissions estimation is due in large part to the lack of measurement data. Several methods have recently been developed for monitoring fugitive GHG emissions from WWT. However, limited by the short duration of the monitoring, only "snapshot" data can be obtained, necessitating extrapolation of the limited data for estimating annual emissions. Extrapolation introduces substantial errors, as it fails to account for the spatial and temporal variations of fugitive emissions. This research evaluated the feasibility of studying the long-term CH4 emissions from WWT by analyzing high spatial resolution Sentinel-2 data. Satellite images of a WWT plant in Calgary, Canada, taken between 2019 and 2023, were processed to retrieve CH4 column concentration distributions. Digital image processing techniques were developed and used for extracting the time- and space-varying features of CH4 emissions, which revealed daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual variations. Emission hotspots were also identified and corroborated with ground-based measurements. Despite limitations due to atmospheric scattering, cloud cover, and sensor resolution, which affect precise ground-level concentration assessments, the findings reveal the dynamic nature of fugitive GHG emissions from WWT, indicating the need for continuous monitoring. The study of the effect of the mechanism of urea addition to sewage sludge and sawdust-composting substrates on methane production is still limited. In the present study, the systematic investigation of the effect of urea addition (0.18, 0.9 and 1.8 kg) on methane production is discussed through the dynamics of physical properties, enzymes, and the microbial community during composting. The results showed that high urea addition (1.8 kg) suppressed methane production, with a lower rate and a shorter duration of warming in the thermophilic phase, but significantly enhanced cellulase activity, urease, and peroxidase, and promoted the degradation of organic carbon, as well as the loss of nitrogen. A high addition of urea stimulated the growth and reproduction of Sinibacillus, Pseudogracilibacillus, Sporosarcina, and Oceanobacillus. The random forest model indicated that the top six independent determinants of CH4 emissions were Methanobacterium, temperature, organic matter (OM), Methanospirillum, and NH4+-N. Furthermore, structural equation modeling displayed that NH4+-N, O2, and pH were the main physicochemical properties affecting CH4 emissions. Methanobacterium, Methanosarcina, and Methanosphaera were the main archaea, and Bacillaceae were the main bacteria affecting CH4 emissions. This study aimed to improve the nutritional value of Sargassum horneri (SH) and evaluate its effect on rumen fermentation characteristics and greenhouse gas emissions. The first trial estimated the effects of blanching temperatures (21, 60, 70, and 80 °C) and durations (1, 2, and 3 min) on the chemical and mineral content of SH. The second trial evaluated the effects of SH supplementation levels (0, 1, 3, and 5%) and blanching temperatures (21 and 70 °C) on in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics and greenhouse gas emissions. As the blanching temperature and time increased, the dry matter and crude ash content decreased (p < 0.05), and the ether extract, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber content increased (p < 0.05). There were significant reductions in Na, K, and As (p < 0.01) when the blanching temperatures increased. As the SH supplementation levels increased, in vitro digestibility of both dry and organic matter decreased (p < 0.001) and the methane production reduced (p < 0.001). Therefore, this study shows that blanching SH at 70 °C for 3 min optimized its nutritional value and improved its potential as a feed source that has methane mitigation characteristics at 3 to 5% supplementation levels. Simple Summary: Agricultural greenhouse gas emissions account for 14.5% of global anthropogenic emissions, with beef and dairy cattle contributing 35% and 30% of global livestock emissions, respectively. This study focuses on dairy cattle, exploring the relationships between rumen microbiota and methane emission. Using a laser methane detector (LMD), methane emissions from 968 lactating cows were measured, and 107 cows were selected for high and low emission groups. The results showed that the abundance of Bacteroidales and Prevotellaceae in the rumen of high methane-emitting cows was significantly higher than that in the low methane-emitting cows. Additionally, it was found that bacterial functions related to biosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism were more active in the high methane-emitting cows. These findings provide new insights for developing strategies to reduce methane emissions, supporting the sustainable development of the dairy industry. Among the measured cows, 107 individuals were further selected into high (HME) and low methane-emitting (LME) groups, including 50 cows in the HME group and 57 in the LME group. This study analyzed differences in rumen microbiota and microbial functions between cows with varying levels of methane emissions. The results showed significant differences in the Simpson and Pielou indices of rumen bacterial communities between the HME and LME groups. Beta diversity analysis revealed significant differences in microbial community structure between the two groups. It was found that the abundance of Bacteroidales and Prevotellaceae in the rumen of cows in the HME group cows was significantly higher than that of cows in the LME group (LDA > 3, p < 0.05). Additionally, bacterial functions related to biosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism were more active in the HME group. This study revealed distinct differences in the rumen bacterial communities between HME and LME cow in Chinese Holstein cattle, and identified specific bacteria and their functional differences in the HME group. Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) significantly contributes to global warming. Capturing and mitigating these emissions can help combat climate change. One effective method is the thermal decomposition of methane, but it requires careful control to prevent explosions from the high temperatures involved. This research investigates the influence of methane concentration and coal dust particle properties on the minimum ignition energy (MIE) required for fugitive methane thermal decomposition and flame propagation properties. This knowledge is crucial for the mining industry to effectively prevent and mitigate accidental fires and explosions in VAM abatement plants. Coal dust samples from three different sources were selected for this study. Experiments were conducted using a modified Hartmann glass tube and a Thermal Gravimetric Analyser (TGA). The chemical properties of coal dust were determined through ultimate and proximate analysis. The particle size distribution was determined using a Mastersizer 3000 apparatus (manufactured by Malvern Panalytical, Malvern, UK). The results showed that the MIE is significantly affected by coal dust particle size, with smaller particles (<74 µm) requiring less energy to ignite compared to coarser particles. Additionally, blending methane with coal dust further reduces the MIE. Introducing methane concentrations of 1% and 2.5% into the combustion space reduced the MIE by 25% and 74%, respectively, for the <74 µm coal dust size fraction. It was observed that coal dust concentration can either raise or lower the MIE. Larger coal dust concentrations, acting as a heat sink, reduce the likelihood of ignition and increase the MIE. This effect was noted at a methane concentration of 2.5% and coal dust levels above 3000 g/m3. In contrast, small amounts of coal dust had little impact on MIE variation. Moreover, the presence of methane during combustion increased the upward flame travel distance and propagation velocity. The flame's vertical travel distance increased from 124 mm to 300 mm for a coal dust concentration of 300 g·m−3 blended with 1% and 2.5% methane, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the relationship between greenhouse gases (GHGs) and particulate emissions and quality of life. The aim is to understand how emissions affect quality of life globally—across countries, regions, and the global population. Statistical methods were used to examine the impact of various emissions' indicators on different aspects of quality of life. The study highlights the urgent need for climate change action and encourages policymakers to take strategic steps. Climate change adversely affects numerous aspects of daily life, leading to significant consequences that must be addressed through policy changes and global governance recommendations. Key findings include that higher CO2 and methane emissions and air pollution negatively impact quality of life. CO2 emissions are positively associated with electricity while air pollution is positively associated with GDP and negatively with unemployment. Air pollution has an adverse effect on all three aspects of the children's welfare dimension of quality of life. The agronomic benefits of pesticides combined with amino acid application to increase rice production have been recognized, but they are still not well-known for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigation in irrigated paddy fields. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of pesticide and amino acid application on rice yield and methane (CH4) emissions in a Korean rice paddy. A field experiment was conducted with five levels: none (no pesticide application, T1), different conventional practices (combined application of insecticides and fungicide, T2 and T3), and GroMore® programs (combined application of insecticides, fungicides, and amino acids, T4 and T5). Rice grain yield and yield components were obtained using agronomic measurements. To determine the greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) of each treatment, CH4 emissions were measured throughout the rice growing period. Results showed that the chemical applications in combination with amino acids in T4 obtained a higher grain yield and number of panicles per plant compared to T1, T2, and T3, while T4 and T5 showed no difference on filled spikelets except for T2. T3 and T5 showed lower respective cumulative CH4 emissions by 30% and 32% during the entire rice growing season, compared to no chemical application (T1). Meanwhile, N2O emissions were negligible in all treatments because the paddy field was flooded most of the growing season. The results of the impact of GroMore® programs on relatively higher grain yield and lower GHG emissions are presented. The increase in global temperatures over the past few decades due to greenhouse gas emissions has raised concerns and necessitated further research in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Methane is a prominent greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to climate change, with a substantial amount generated through fermentation processes occurring in the rumen of ruminant animals. The potential of plant secondary metabolites, especially those derived from tannin-rich plants, warrants investigation to modify rumen fermentation and mitigate methane emissions in livestock diets. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of extracts obtained from green and black tea waste on rumen fermentation dynamics and gas (methane) production, utilizing in vitro methods. For this purpose, rumen fluid was collected from two fistulated sheep and subjected to three treatments: (1) a basal diet (control), (2) a basal diet + green tea waste extract (5% of dry matter), (3) a basal diet + black tea waste extract (5% of dry matter). The study assessed the effects of incorporating extracts from green and black tea waste on various parameters, including digestibility, protozoa population, ammonia nitrogen levels, volatile fatty acids, and methane gas production following a 24-h incubation period. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted using SAS software within a completely randomized design framework. The findings indicated that the addition of green and black tea waste extracts significantly decreased methane gas production (p < 0.05), protozoa count (p < 0.05), and ammonia nitrogen concentrations in rumen fluid (p < 0.05) when compared to the control group. The addition of green and black tea waste extracts has significantly altered the concentration of VFAs in rumen fluid (p < 0.05). Specifically, the addition of green tea waste extract has led to a highly significant reduction in acetic acid, (p < 0.01) and the addition of both extracts has resulted in a significant increase in propionic acid (p < 0.05). Consequently, the results suggest that the inclusion of green and black tea waste extracts in livestock diets may effectively mitigate methane emissions in the rumen, thereby reducing feed costs and reducing environmental pollution. Due to natural and anthropogenic disturbances, natural gas hydrates with morphologies of nodules and chunks dissociate and release massive free gas, creating large cavities within fine-grained marine sediments. However, it is still a challenge to quantify the impact of gas cavities on mechanical properties of cavitied fine-grained marine sediments as there is a lack of efforts focusing on the inner structure visualization. In this study, an oedometer test and X-ray computed tomography scans are jointly conducted on marine clayey silt with gas cavities, and the confined compressibility as well as the inner structure change under an undrained condition are explored, followed by development of a theoretical model depicting the void ratio change. The results show that vertical loading induces a void ratio reduction, and the reduced void ratio can fully recover after being unloaded. Although being fully recovered, unrecovered changes of the inner structure still remain after being unloaded. Examples include closed cracks in the lower matrix, new occurring cracks in the upper matrix, and the fragmented gas cavity. In addition, the void ratio linearly increases with the increasing inverse of normalized pore gas pressure, while the coefficient of the effective stress linearly decreases with the increasing inverse of normalized vertical loading stress. The proposed theoretical model captures the essential physics behind undrained confined deformation of fine-grained marine sediments with gas cavities when subjected to loading and unloading. To create innovative, low-emission pig housing systems, the development of a prediction model appears to be a straightforward solution. This paper introduces such a model for predicting methane and ammonia emissions from two commercial pig houses with two manure management systems: one with long storage in deep pits and the other with short storage, through daily flushing of a shallow pit with sloped walls (a reduced emitting surface) and partial manure dilution. This simulation model, which considers factors like animal weight, age, feed, and pen dimensions as input data, calculates manure quantity and quality, as well as methane and ammonia emissions over the growing period. In this model, the calculation of ammonia emission involves aggregating emissions from various sources identifiable within pig houses. These sources include manure channels, slatted floors, and solid floors, encompassing fouled areas, pigs, and pen partitions. This model successfully predicts the development of methane and ammonia emissions based on animal and farm characteristics. This paper describes a model for the prediction of methane and ammonia emissions from fattening pig houses. This model was validated with continuous and discrete measurements using a reference method from two manure management systems (MMS): long storage (LS) in deep pits and short storage (SS) by daily flushing of a shallow pit with sloped walls and partial manure dilution. The average calculated methane and ammonia emissions corresponded well with the measured values. Based on the calculated and measured results, the average calculated CH4 emission (18.5 and 4.3 kg yr−1 per pig place) was in between the means from the continuous data from sensors (15.9 and 5.6 kg yr−1 per pig place) and the means from the discrete measurements using the reference method (22.0 and 3.1 kg yr−1 per pig place) for the LS and SS systems, respectively. The average calculated NH3 emission (2.6 and 1.4 kg yr−1 per pig place) corresponded well with the continuous data (2.6 and 1.2 kg yr−1 per pig place) and the discrete measurements using the reference method (2.7 and 1.0 kg yr−1 per pig place) from LS and SS, respectively. This model was able to predict the reduction potential for methane and ammonia emissions by the application of mitigation options. Furthermore, this model can be utilized as a predictive tool, enabling timely actions to be taken based on the emission prediction. The upgraded model with robust calculation rules, extensive validations, and a simplified interface can be a useful tool to assess the current situation and the impact of mitigation measures at the farm level. Additionally, these alternative feeds possess antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties that can enhance the quality of the meat and milk produced. By impacting the bacteria involved in ruminal biohydrogenation, alternative feeds can reduce methane emissions and contribute to a decrease in the carbon footprint. Overall, the use of alternative feed sources for small ruminants generally improves their apparent nutrient digestibility and productivity, and has an impact on the production of greenhouse gases, especially methane. Simple Summary: Consumer perception related to health and environmental issues associated with ruminant products, such as greenhouse gas emissions, has led to a paradigm shift aimed at mitigating the potential harmful effects of ruminant production. This study consolidated the current body of research on dietary rumen manipulating strategies with an aim to quantify their impact on rumen fermentation, enteric methane (CH4) emission and productivity by creating a global database on in vivo evaluation studies. A meta-analytical approach was used to achieve the study's aim and the result showed that nitrate, saponin, oils, biochar and 3-nitroxypropanol (3-NOP) were effective dietary rumen modulating strategies to mitigate enteric CH4 emission. Of these effective strategies, oils and 3-NOP provided a co-benefit in terms of improving productivity in ruminant livestock. Concentrate feeding equally improved production without any significant effect on enteric methane emissions. A meta-analysis was conducted with an aim to quantify the beneficial effects of nine different dietary rumen modulating strategies which includes: the use of plant-based bioactive compounds (saponin, tannins, oils, and ether extract), feed additives (nitrate, biochar, seaweed, and 3-nitroxy propanol), and diet manipulation (concentrate feeding) on rumen fermentation, enteric methane (CH4) production (g/day), CH4 yield (g/kg dry matter intake) and CH4 emission intensity (g/kg meat or milk), and production performance parameters (the average daily gain, milk yield and milk quality) of ruminant livestock. The dataset was constructed by compiling global data from 110 refereed publications on in vivo studies conducted in ruminants from 2005 to 2023 and anlayzed using a meta-analytical approach.. Of these dietary rumen manipulation strategies, saponin and biochar reduced CH4 production on average by 21%. Equally, CH4 yield was reduced by 15% on average in response to nitrate, oils, and 3-nitroxy propanol (3-NOP). In dairy ruminants, nitrate, oils, and 3-NOP reduced the intensity of CH4 emission (CH4 in g/kg milk) on average by 28.7%. Tannins and 3-NOP increased on average ruminal propionate and butyrate while reducing the acetate:propionate (A:P) ratio by 12%, 13.5% and 13%, respectively. Oils increased propionate by 2% while reducing butyrate and the A:P ratio by 2.9% and 3.8%, respectively. Use of 3-NOP increased the production of milk fat (g/kg DMI) by 15% whereas oils improved the yield of milk fat and protein (kg/d) by 16% and 20%, respectively. On the other hand, concentrate feeding improved dry matter intake and milk yield (g/kg DMI) by 23.4% and 19%, respectively. However, feed efficiency was not affected by any of the dietary rumen modulating strategies. Generally, the use of nitrate, saponin, oils, biochar and 3-NOP were effective as CH4 mitigating strategies, and specifically oils and 3-NOP provided a co-benefit of improving production parameters in ruminant livestock. Equally concentrate feeding improved production parameters in ruminant livestock without any significant effect on enteric methane emission. Therefore, it is advisable to refine further these strategies through life cycle assessment or modelling approaches to accurately capture their influence on farm-scale production, profitability and net greenhouse gas emissions. The adoption of the most viable, region-specific strategies should be based on factors such as the availability and cost of the strategy in the region, the specific goals to be achieved, and the cost–benefit ratio associated with implementing these strategies in ruminant livestock production systems. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, notably Sentinel-1A's C-band, VV, and VH polarized SAR, has emerged as a crucial tool for mapping rice fields, especially in regions where cloud cover hinders optical imagery. Employing multi-temporal characteristics, SAR data were regularly collected and parameterized using MAPscape-Rice software, which integrates a fully automated processing chain to convert the data into terrain-geocoded σ° values. This facilitated the generation of rice area maps through a rule-based classifier approach, with classification accuracies ranging from 88.5 to 91.5 and 87.5 percent in 2017, 2018, and 2022, respectively. To estimate methane emissions, IPCC (37.13 kg/ha/season, 42.10 kg/ha/season, 43.19 kg/ha/season) and LST (36.05 kg/ha/season, 41.44 kg/ha/season, 38.07 kg/ha/season) factors were utilized in 2017, 2018 and 2022. Total methane emissions were recorded as 19.813 Gg, 20.661 Gg, and 25.72 Gg using IPCC and 19.155 Gg, 20.373 Gg, and 22.76 Gg using LST factors in 2017, 2018 and 2022. Overall accuracy in methane emission estimation, assessed against field observations, ranged from (IPCC) 85.71, 91.32, and 80.25 percent to (LST) 83.69, 91.43, and 84.69 percent for the years 2017, 2018 and 2022, respectively, confirming the efficacy of remote sensing in greenhouse gas monitoring and its potential for evaluating the impact of large-scale water management strategies on methane emissions and carbon credit-based ecosystem services at regional or national levels. The ongoing yearly rise in worldwide methane (CH4) emissions is mostly due to human activities. Nevertheless, since over half of these emissions are scattered and have a concentration of less than 3% (v/v), traditional physical–chemical methods are not very effective in reducing them. In this context, biotechnologies like biofiltration using methane-consuming bacteria, also known as methanotrophs, offer a cost-efficient and practical approach to addressing diffuse CH4 emissions. The present review describes recent findings in biofiltration processes as one of the earliest biotechnologies for treating polluted air. Specifically, impacts of biotic (such as cooperation between methanotrophs and non-methanotrophic bacteria and fungi) and abiotic factors (such as temperature, salinity, and moisture) that influence CH4 biofiltration were compiled. Understanding the processes of methanogenesis and methanotrophy holds significant importance in the development of innovative agricultural practices and industrial procedures that contribute to a more favourable equilibrium of greenhouse gases. The integration of advanced genetic analyses can enable holistic approaches for unravelling the potential of biological systems for methane mitigation. The production diets (127 and 32.2 g/kg DM) had more protein and fats than the maintenance diets (82.0 and 21.0 g/kg DM). There was less (p < 0.05) fiber in the production diets compared to the maintenance ones. Different protein components (PB1, PB2) were lower (p < 0.05) in the maintenance diets compared to the growth and production ones, but other protein fractions (PB3, Pc) were higher (p < 0.05) in the maintenance diet. Furthermore, the growth diets had the highest amount of other protein components (PA), while the maintenance diets had the highest amount of soluble carbohydrates (586 g/kg DM), whereas the carbohydrate fraction (CB1) was highest (p < 0.05) in the production diets (187 g/kg DM), followed by the growth (129 g/kg DM) and maintenance diets (96.1 g/kg DM). On the contrary, the carbohydrate CA fraction was (p < 0.05) higher in the maintenance diets (107 g/kg DM) than in the growth (70.4 g/kg DM) and production diets (44.7 g/kg DM). The in vitro gas production over time (12, 24, and 48 h) was roughly the same for all the diets. Interestingly, certain components (ether extract, lignin, NDIN, ADIN, and PB3 and CC) of the diets seemed to reduce methane production, while others (OM, NPN, SP, PA and PB1, tCHO and CB2) increased it. Simple Summary: This study investigated the effect of varying levels of dietary fat in concentrate mixes on growth performance, rumen characteristics, digestibility, blood metabolites, and methane emissions in growing Hanwoo steers. The experiment was conducted for 12 weeks by feeding three concentrate mixes with different levels of dietary fat (i.e., 48, 74, 99 g/kg dry matter [DM] of concentrate mix). Increasing fat levels in the concentrate mix significantly reduced the intake of concentrate mix (p < 0.01); however, there were no significant adverse effects on the growth rate, feed efficiency, and digestibility (p > 0.05). Increasing fat levels also affected the characteristics of rumen fluid, increasing the proportion of propionate (p < 0.01) and decreasing the proportion of butyrate and acetate to propionate in the total volatile fatty acids (p < 0.01). Cholesterol in blood serum increased significantly with increasing fat levels (p < 0.01). The highest fat level showed 18% lower methane concentration in exhaled gas from eructation than the lowest (basal) fat level (p < 0.05). In conclusion, increasing the fat level up to 100 g/kg DM in the concentrate mix reduced methane concentration in the exhaled gas from eructation without altering growth performance in growing Hanwoo steers. As the fat level increased, propionate in the total ruminal volatile fatty acids increased, and butyrate and acetate-to-propionate decreased (p < 0.01). The mechanistic model LAKE2.3 was tested for its capability to predict of methane (CH4) emissions from reservoirs. Estimates of CH4 emissions from the Mozhaysk reservoir (Moscow region) provided by the model showed good agreement with instrumental in situ observations for several parameters of the water ecosystem. The average CH4 flux calculated by the model is 37.7 mgC-CH4 m−2 day−1, while according to observations, it is 34.4 mgC-CH4 m−2 day−1. Ebullition makes the largest contribution to the emissions from reservoirs (up to 95%) due to low methane solubility in water and the high oxidation rate of diffusive methane flux. During the heating period, an increase in methane emission is observed both in the model and empirical data, with a maximum before the onset of the autumn overturn. An effective parameter for calibrating the diffusive methane flux in the model is the potential rate of methane oxidation. For ebullition flux, it is the parameter q10 (an empirical parameter determining the relationship between methane generation and temperature) because methane production in bottom sediments is the most important. Numerous cases of serious accidents related to methane outbursts exist worldwide. Due to their disastrous consequences, a vast quantity of research on underground gas explosions has been conducted using conventional models and laboratory tests, as performing studies at explosion sites is difficult. When conventional models are employed, the results are poor since these models are based on calculations at fixed times for a single point of a single section of an underground space. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is necessary to calibrate these models, using measurements obtained in galleries. In this case, the measurements are obtained from methane emissions of 3885 m3. CFD modelling was carried out in three phases. First, the relationship between methane emission and the main ventilation was analysed. Second, the effect of adding an auxiliary ventilation fan to the main ventilation was investigated. Finally, methane evolution over time was analysed. In the first moments, methane produces a reversal at 200 m from the main ventilation entrance of the gallery. When 60 m of auxiliary ventilation is superimposed, the ventilation reversal distance is reduced to 42 m from the methane emission source. The effect of superimposing appropriate auxiliary ventilation on the main ventilation, as well as the correct placement of the auxiliary ventilation fan, can generate safe zones behind the ventilation reversal area. The main objectives of this study were to identify methane hotspots through spatial distribution tests of the surface methane concentration above a landfill final cover and to investigate the effects of rainfall, atmospheric pressure, ground temperature, and ambient methane concentration on methane emissions. A portable laser methane detector was used to measure the spatial distribution of methane concentrations. The methane concentration distribution showed a distinct spatial variability. The maximum methane concentration reached 3225 ppm, while 73.0% of the methane concentration values were below 10.0 ppm. Several meteorological factors were found to be associated with the variation in methane emissions. Rainfall limited gas transport in the cover, resulting in more significant methane hotspots. Atmospheric pressure was negatively correlated with methane emission. The ambient methane concentration and methane flux had a significant positive linear correlation. Based on a linear correlation equation, the spatial distribution of methane concentrations in the landfill could be converted into a methane emission distribution. The estimated average value for methane emissions in the test area was approximately 4.3 g m−2 d−1. This study provides an experimental basis for locating methane hotspots and assessing methane emissions in landfill final covers, and proposes supplementary means for detecting geomembrane damage in landfill covers. Freshwater lakes represent a potential source of methane (CH4) emission into the atmosphere. However, the CH4 emission contribution to the total emission in the littoral zones of lakes, especially emergent macrophytes (e.g., lotus), is poorly known. Lotus has been cultivated in almost all provinces in China; it is not only an aquatic plant, but also a kind of vegetable. In this study, two sampling zones (lotus plant and open water) were established in the lake of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The CH4 emission was measured using a floating opaque chamber and gas chromatography between April and December in the years 2021 and 2022. The results indicated that the flux of CH4 emissions ranged from 0.10 to 59.75 mg m−2 h−1, with an average value of 5.61 mg m−2 h−1, in the open water, while ranging from 0.19 to 57.32 mg m−2 h−1, with an average value of 17.14 mg m−2 h−1, in the lotus plant zone. The maximal CH4 emissions occurred in July and August for the open water, which was highly related to the air and water temperature, whereas it happened in September for the lotus plant zone, possibly due to the high vegetation biomass, indirectly enhancing the high soil organic carbon content, plant-mediated CH4 emission, as well as the lower dissolved oxygen concentration, thus strengthening the production and emissions of CH4. Considering the carbon emissions (both CH4 and CO2) and plant productivity, although greater CH4 emission occurred in the lotus plant zone, it could still represent a potential carbon sink (213 g m−2 yr−1) compared to the open water. Industrial fruit by-products are now being utilized as animal feeds for several reasons. They may substitute the conventional cereal feeds, and also offer economic and environmental benefits. One of the most important industrial fruit by-products is apple pomace, which can be used as a source of energy in the ration of ruminant species, including dairy cattle. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of feeding dried apple pomace to dairy cattle on ruminal fermentation, fatty acid concentration, microbial populations, and methane production. The experiment lasted 64 days and was conducted with 4 cannulated commercial dairy cows. The control animals received a standard diet, while the experimental animals was fed a standard diet supplemented with 150 g/kg DM dried apple pomace. Ruminal fluid samples were collected at three different time intervals. The samples were obtained at 0-, 3-, and 6-h post-feeding. The ruminal fluid was used to assess the ammonia concentration, pH, volatile fatty acids (VFA), long-chain fatty acids (FA), microbial population. A number of ruminal fermentation variables changed as a result of the addition of dried apple pomace to the standard diet. Ruminal pH slightly increased (p < 0.01) while the ammonia concentration decreased (p < 0.01) by 46%. There was a significant decrease in total protozoa count (p < 0.01) and an increase (p < 0.01) in total volatile fatty acids. In addition, there was a decline in methane emission (p = 0.05) by 8% due to dried apple pomace feeding. To sum up, this study demonstrated a positive effect of 150 g/kg DM dietary dried apple pomace on ruminal metabolism including a decrease in ammonia concentration and methane emissions, alongside with an increase in total ruminal VFAs, higher nutrient digestibility, and milk production. Also, beneficial changes to the ruminal fatty acid profile resulting from reduced biohydrogenation were observed although a decreased content of the C18:2 cis 9 trans 11 isomer was also noticed. The present study investigated the impact of peat moss as a feed additive on the emission of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) from piggery slurry stored in slurry pits. There is no well-known study on the relationship between pig manure generated after feeding peat moss as a feed additive and CH4 and CO2 released during the storage period. A lab-scale experiment was conducted for two months using a slurry pit simulator composed of six vessels—three for pig slurry collected after feeding 3.0% peat moss as a feed additive (PFS) and three for pig slurry without feeding peat moss (CTL). PFS reduced CO2 and CH4 emissions (p < 0.05) from stored pig slurry by approximately 23% and 44%, respectively. PFS exhibits substantially elevated concentrations of humic substance (HS) such as humic acid, fulvic acid, and humin compared with CTL, with fold differences of 2.3, 1.8, and 1.1, respectively. Elevated HS levels in the PFS seemed to limit hydrolysis, resulting in lower total volatile fatty acid concentrations compared with CTL. A dominance of CH4 in total carbon emissions was observed (p < 0.05), with CH4 accounting for approximately 93% and 95% of total carbon emissions in PFS and CTL, respectively. PFS had a roughly 43% lower impact on cumulative carbon emissions than CTL, primarily due to decreased CH4 emissions. These findings suggest that PFS may be a promising approach for mitigating carbon emissions and potentially impacting environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation efforts. Simple Summary: This study showed that the substitution of 500 g SM with 100 g SRU plus 400 g corn silage led to an improvement in dairy cows' efficiency due to an enhanced production performance, a lower secretion of heat shock proteins, antioxidant status, and better rumen fermentation. In this study, 30 healthy Holstein lactating dairy cattle with a similar milk yield of 22.8 ± 3.3 kg, days in milk of 191.14 ± 27.24 days, and 2.2 ± 1.5 parity were selected and randomly allocated into two groups. The constituents of the two treatments were (1) basic diet plus 500 g soybean meal (SM) for the SM group and (2) basic diet plus 100 g slow-release urea and 400 g corn silage for the SRU group. The average temperature humidity index (THI) during the experiment was 84.47, with an average THI of >78 from day 1 to day 28, indicating the cow experienced moderate heat stress conditions. Compared with the SM group, the SRU group showed decreasing body temperature and respiratory rate trends at 20:00 (p < 0.1). The substitution of SM with SRU resulted in an increasing trend in milk yield, with a significant increase of 7.36% compared to the SM group (p < 0.1). Compared to the SM group, AST, ALT, and γ-GT content levels were significantly increased (p < 0.05). Notably, the levels of HSP-70 and HSP-90α were significantly reduced (p < 0.05). The SRU group showed significantly increased acetate and isovalerate concentrations compared with the SM group (p < 0.05). The prediction results indicate that the SRU group exhibits a significant decrease in methane (CH4) emissions when producing 1 L of milk compared to the SM group (p < 0.05). In summary, dietary supplementation with SRU tended to increase the milk yield and rumen fermentation and reduce plasma heat shock molecules in mid-lactation, heat-stressed dairy cows. We investigated growth performance and ruminal fermentation associated with gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) Haemonchus contortus in lambs and in vitro ruminal fermentation of mallow, chamomile, fumitory, wormwood (Herbmix), and chicory using inoculum from GIN-infected lambs. Twelve lambs were equally divided into two groups: uninfected animals (CON) and animals infected (INF) with approximately 5000 third-stage larvae derived from the MHCo1 strain of GIN H. contortus. Two lambs per group were killed on days 48, 49, and 50 after infection and ruminal content was collected separately from each lamb. Batch cultures of ruminal fluid from CON and INF were incubated for 24 h in vitro with 0.25 g meadow hay, Herbmix, and chicory using an in vitro gas production technique. Daily weight gain was relatively lower in the INF than the CON group, but not significantly (72.6 vs. 130.1 g/day). The ruminal populations of protozoa, bacteria, total Archaea, Methanobacteriales, and Methanomicrobiales were significantly higher in the INF than in the CON group. The substrates affected the concentrations of n-butyrate, iso-butyrate, n-valerate, iso-valerate, ammonia-N, total gas, and methane (p < 0.001) in vitro. Spent coffee waste is the most common by-product of coffee processing, and it has the potential to be used as a source of organic compounds for ruminant diets. The objective of this study was to evaluate the optimal inclusion level and method for using spent coffee waste (SCW) as a ruminant feed and investigate its effects on rumen fermentation characteristics and methane (CH4) production. The present in vitro batch culture study was conducted using two different experimental designs. The first experimental design (TRIAL. 1) was performed using a control diet of 500 mg of fresh matter basal diet (60% hay/40% concentrate), with SCW being used as a feed additive at 1%, 10% and 20% of the substrate. The second experimental design was performed using the same control diet, with spent coffee waste replacing either part of the hay (TRIAL. 2) or some of the concentrate mixture (TRIAL. 3) at four different dosages (30:70, 50:50, 70:30 and 100). When SCW was supplemented as a feed additive, there were increases in the production of volatile fatty acids and gas; however, it did not show any suppressive effects on CH4 production. In contrast, when SCW was included as a replacement for hay or concentrate, there were significant reductions in CH4 production with increasing levels of SCW inclusion. These reductions in CH4 production were accompanied by negative effects on nutrient digestibility and total volatile fatty acid production. These findings demonstrate that SCW could potentially be used as a prebiotic feed additive. A correlation is observed between changes in the level of Earth's seismic activity and increments of the atmospheric methane concentration over the past 40 years. Trigger mechanisms are proposed for methane emissions and glacier collapse in polar regions. These mechanisms are due to deformation waves caused by large earthquakes in subduction zones located near the polar regions: the Aleutian and Kuril–Kamchatka subduction zones, closest to the Arctic, and the Antarctica–Chilean and Tonga–Kermadec–Macquarie subduction zones. Disturbances of the lithosphere are transmitted over the distances of 3000–4000 km and more at a speed of about 100 km/year. Additional associated stresses come to the Arctic and Antarctica several decades after the occurrence of large earthquakes. In the Arctic zone, additional stresses affect the low-permeability structure of gas bearing sedimentary strata, causing increased methane emission and climate warming. In West Antarctica, deformation waves could trigger the acceleration and intensive collapse of West Antarctic glaciers, which has been observed since the 1970s. These waves are also capable of activating dormant volcanoes located under the sheet glaciers of West Antarctica, leading to an increase in heat flux, to the melting of ice at the glaciers' base, and to their accelerated sliding towards the ocean, as is happening with the Thwaites Glacier. The chemical composition, in vitro total gas and CH4 production and performance of cattle fed on factory black tea waste (Camellia sinensis) (BTW), alfalfa (Medicago Sativa), sainfoin (Onobrychis sativa) and white clover (Trifolium repens) was investigated. The gas production was quantified at the 24th hour of the incubation process. BTW was found to vary from roughages in chemical composition (p < 0.05). In addition, the roughages differed in terms of nutrient composition and gas production (p < 0.05). In legume roughages, acetic acid (AA), propionic acid (PA), butyric acid (BA), and total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) values ranged from 52.36–57.00 mmol/L, 13.46–17.20 mmol/L, 9.79–12.43 mmol/L, and 79.71–89.05 mmol/L, respectively. In comparison with black tea waste, legume roughages had higher values of AA, PA, BA, and TVFA. Black tea waste contained a higher acetic acid ratio than legume roughages when compared as a percentage. There was a similar ratio of propionic acid to the rate calculated for sainfoin (Onobrychis sativa) and clover (Trifolium repens), and a similar ratio of butyric acid to the ratio determined for alfalfa (Medicago Sativa). The current study shows that the 5.7–6.3% tannin content of black tea waste can be used in ruminant rations with high-quality roughages. Due to the fact that BTW reduces methane emissions from ruminants and eliminates energy waste from them, the environment can be improved. Open-path laser telemetry of methane leakage yields security guarantees of energy storage and transportation for oil/gas station production operation. In order to further improve the long-term detection stability under the condition of long-distance non-cooperative targets, a catadioptric optical receiver (COR) consisting of a Fresnel lens, cone reflector and parabolic reflector is proposed to focus the laser echo light that deviates gradually with the increase in atmospheric turbulence. The geometric configuration parameters of COR are optimized by the ray-tracing method, and the condensing performance of COR is further verified. The self-developed methane laser telemetry system coupled with COR is calibrated in the laboratory and then moved to the field for a signal receiving stability experiment under turbulence interference. The results show that the receiving angle of COR increases 3.8 times compared with the Fresnel lens optical receiver (FOR). The RMSE and IS of the COR system are 0.00173 V and 84.79%, respectively. For comparison, these two evaluating indicators of the FOR system are 0.00288 V and 76.23%. This self-developed methane laser telemetry system coupled with COR is feasible for improving the long-term detection stability of remote leakage monitoring in oil/gas stations. Tamil Nadu in particular is a key rice-producing region in peninsular India. Hydrochemistry, viz., redox potential (Rh), soil temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO), of rice soils can determine the production of greenhouse gas methane (CH4). In recent decades, the cultivation of crops organically became a viable option for mitigating climate change. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different organic amendments on CH4 emission, Rh, DO, and soil and water temperature (T) in relation to the yield of paddy. The treatments composed of viz., control, blue-green algae (BGA), Azolla, farm yard manure (FYM), green leaf manure (GLM), blue-green algae + Azolla, FYM + GLM, BGA + Azolla + FYM + GLM, vermicompost and decomposed livestock manure. With the addition of BGA + Azolla, the highest reduction in CH4 emission was 37.9% over the control followed by BGA. However, the same treatment had a 50% and 43% increase in Rh and DO, respectively, over the control. Established Pearson correlation analyses showed that the CH4 emission had a positive correlation with soil (r = 0.880 **) and water T (r = 0.888 **) and negative correlations with Rh (r = −0.987 **) and DO (r = −0.963 **). The higher grain yield of 26.5% was associated with BGA + Azolla + FYM + GLM application. Our findings showed that there are significant differences in CH4 emissions between different organic amendments and that hydro-parameters may be a more important controlling factor for methane emissions than temperature. The conclusion has been drawn based on valid research findings that bio-fertilization using BGA and Azolla is an efficient and feasible approach to combat climate change, as it assists in reducing methane emissions while simultaneously boosting crop yield by fixing nitrogen into the soil in the studied agro-climatic zone. As the second-largest contributor to historical global warming, methane emissions must be controlled to slow down temperature increase and achieve climate benefits. Due to a lack of knowledge about the specific sources and processes, a quantitative approach will lead to inaccurate estimation. In this paper, a typical local distribution company with more than 100 years of operation history was chosen. Detailed procedures of pipeline constructions and accidents were investigated, and critical steps leading to methane emissions were clarified. Then emission quantification methodologies for all processes were proposed, including a new pipeline connection, new regulator connection, emergency repair and third-party damages. As a basis for emission estimation, the distribution of parameters, such as diameter, length and pressure, was counted. Then the emission rates of all projects were calculated, and emission factors were established. The average emission rates of the new pipeline connection, new regulator connection, emergency repair, third-party damage (medium pressure) and third-party damage (low pressure) were 234 kg, 147 kg, 217 kg, 17,282 kg and 62 kg, respectively. In addition, the total methane emission in China from these sources was estimated to be about 5 × 104 t, which is large enough to attract attention. The concentration of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere has significantly increased over the last 60 years. One of the factors in the growth of methane and its homologue emissions is the intense thawing of gas hydrates, mainly from the Arctic shelf, which remains one of the less studied sources of atmospheric hydrocarbon emissions. Oxidation of methane and light-saturated hydrocarbons by ozone in the upper part of the atmosphere leads to the formation of CO2. The analysis of several datasets presented in this paper allows us to find the correlation between CH4 and CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. This finding suggests that methane and its homologues released from gas hydrates mainly in the Arctic shelf zone become a significant source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In ruminants' metabolism, a surplus of hydrogen is removed from the reduction reaction of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) by the formation of methane by methanogenic bacteria and archaea methanogens. The balance of calculations between VFA (volatile fatty acids), CO2, and CH4 indicates that acetate and butyrate play a role in methane production, while the formation of propionate maintains hydrogen and therefore reduces methane production. CH4 formation in ruminant livestock is not desired because it reduces feed efficiency and contributes to global warming. Therefore, numerous strategies have been investigated to mitigate methane production in ruminants. This review focuses on feed additives which have the capability of reducing methane emissions in ruminants. Due to the environmental importance of methane emissions, such studies are needed to make milk and meat production more sustainable. Additionally, the additives which have no adverse effects on rumen microbial population and where the reduction effects are a result of their hydrogen sink property, are the best reduction methods. Methane inhibitors have shown such a property in most cases. More work is needed to bring methane-reducing agents in ruminant diets to full market maturity, so that farmers can reap feed cost savings and simultaneously achieve environmental benefits. Methane (CH4) is an important greenhouse gas. There is increasing attention to CH4 abatement strategies because of its contribution to short-term warming and strong benefits of decreasing CH4 emissions. China greenhouse gas inventory methods are used to predict CH4 emissions from the energy industry and to assess the potentials of CH4 abatement policies and techniques by 2050. The NDC scenario results show using oil and gas as transitional clean energy sources instead of coal will increase CH4 emissions from oil and gas industries at least 70%, but CH4 emissions from the coal industry will decrease 45%, meaning total CH4 emissions from the energy industry will continually decrease at least 30% in 2030 compared with 2020. Energy-related CH4 emissions might peak around 2025, ahead of CO2 emission peaking. CH4 emissions will then decrease slightly and decrease markedly after 2030. Emissions in 2050 are expected to be 32% lower than emissions in 2020. In an extreme scenario, emissions may be 90% lower in 2050 than in 2020. It is suggested that the verification system for the energy industry's CH4 emission accounting at the national level be improved and CH4 control targets in line with national emission targets and the "14th Five-Year Plan" development stage be formulated. Lakes represent an important source of atmospheric methane (CH4); however, there are few studies on which lake-dwelling invasive aquatic plants generate CH4. Therefore, in this study, CH4 emissions were measured using a floating chamber and gas chromatography in a subtropical lake in China. We considered four community zones of invasive plants (Eichhornia crassipes), emergent vegetation (Zizania latifolia), floating-plant (Trapa natans) and open-water zones. The results indicate that the flux of CH4 emissions varied between −5.38 and 102.68 mg m−2 h−1. The higher emission values were attributed to lake eutrophication. Moreover, the flux of CH4 emissions in the invasive plant zone was 140–220% higher than that in the open-water and the floating-plant zones. However, there was no significant difference in CH4 emissions between the invasive plant and the emergent vegetation zones. This may be due to a higher production of plants, as well as the rapid reproductive rate of the invasive plants. Finally, CH4 emissions were positively associated with the air and water temperature; however, the emissions were also negatively associated with water depth. Cultivar renewal (CR) contributes greatly to rice yield increase in China and even in the world. However, few studies were focused on the impact and mechanism of CR on field methane (CH4) emissions. A 2-year field experiment was conducted using 14 typical japonica rice cultivars released in the Yangtze River Basin of China during the last 70 years. The grain yield, root morphophysiological traits and their relationships with CH4 emissions were examined. The results showed that the grain yields of cultivars in the 1960–2010s increased by 18.8–93.9% while the CH4 emissions decreased by 9.5–41.2% compared with the 1950's cultivars. The daily and cumulative CH4 emissions during the panicle differentiation stage (PD) were reduced significantly, which contributed greatly to the CH4 mitigation of the whole growing season. The CR notably increased root biomass, root/shoot ratio, root oxidation activity, and the total organic carbon in root exudates (ETOC), and decreased the ratios of ETOC/yield, ETOC/root biomass and ETOC/shoot biomass. Nitrogen fertilizer applied during panicle differentiation could improve the root physiology and decrease the ETOC/yield and ETOC/root, therefore reducing CH4 emissions. Our findings illustrated that CR reduced CH4 emissions by improving root traits and by optimizing the photosynthate allocation to biomass and grain yields. Long-term application of soil organic amendments (SOA) can improve the formation of soil organic carbon (SOC) pool as well as soil fertility and health of paddy lands. However, the effects of SOA may vary with the input amount and its characteristics. In this work, a descriptive field research was conducted during one cropping season to investigate the responses of various SOC fractions to different long-term fertilization practices in rice fields and their relationships with soil biogeochemical properties and the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). The field sites included two conventional paddies applied with chemical fertilizer (CF) or CF + rice straw (RS) and six organic agriculture paddies applied with oilseed cake manure (OCM) + wheat straw (WS), cow manure (CM) + WS, or CM + RS. The two paddy soils treated with CM + RS had significantly higher concentrations of recalcitrant to labile C forms, such as loss-on-ignition C (LOIC; 56–73 g kg−1), Walkley–Black C (WBC; 20–25 g kg−1), permanganate oxidizable C (POXC; 835–853 mg kg−1), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC; 133–141 mg kg−1), than soils treated with other SOA. Likewise, long-term application of CM + RS seemed to be the best for regulating soil fertility parameters, such as ammonium (11–141 mg kg−1); phosphate (61–106 mg kg−1); and soluble Ca, K, and Mg (7–10, 0.5–1.2, and 1.9–3.8 mg kg−1, respectively), although the results varied with the location and soil properties of rice fields. Additionally, the two paddy sites had the largest cumulative methane emission (754–762 kg ha−1), seemingly attributed to increased microbial biomass and labile C fractions. The significant correlations of most SOC fractions with soil microbial biomass, trophic factors, and methane emissions were confirmed with multivariate data analysis. It was also possible to infer that long-term SOA application, especially with CM + RS, enhanced interaction in belowground paddy fields, contributing to soil fertility and rice production sustainability. Based on our findings, we suggest the need for analysis of various types of SOC fractions to efficiently manage soil fertility and quality of paddy fields, C sequestration, and GHG emissions. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of the inclusion of Acacia mearnsii (AM) at different levels of inclusion on ruminal digestion and in vitro gas production. A. mearnsii forage was incorporated in the diet at different levels of 0 (AM0), 20 (AM20), and 40 (AM40) %. In situ degradation of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) showed differences between treatments (P < 0.05), obtaining the highest value of the degradation of soluble fraction (A), insoluble but potentially degradable fraction (B), degradation rate in % per hour (c), potential degradation (A + B), and effective degradation for all passage rates in % h (0.02, 0.05, and 0.08) in AM0 with respect to AM20 and AM40. The in vitro digestibility of DM and OM was higher (P < 0.05) in AM0 with approximately 23.6% and 22.8% of DM and OM, respectively, compared to treatments AM20 and AM40. Cumulative gas production (PG) and gas production asymptote (B) were lower at AM0 and AM20 versus AM40; however, gas production rate (c) and total CH4 production were lower at AM40 with about 40.1 mL CH4/0.500 g fermented DM versus AM0 and AM20. Under the conditions of this study, it is concluded that the incorporation of A. mearnsii (20% and 40%) in the feed of ruminants negatively affected the digestion of nutrients; however, it reduced the production of CH4, which may be associated with the low activity of microorganisms toward the substrate due to the possible tannin/nutrient complex. Increasing propionate and reducing acetate and butyrate in the rumen can reduce hydrogen equivalents that would otherwise be transferred to methanogenesis. Diet can reduce methane emissions. Grain lowers rumen pH, increases propionate production, and decreases CH4 yield. Methane generation per unit of energy-corrected milk yield reduces with a higher-energy diet. Bioactive bromoform discovered in the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis reduces livestock intestinal methane output by inhibiting its production. Essential oils, tannins, saponins, and flavonoids are anti-methanogenic. While it is true that plant extracts can assist in reducing methane emissions, it is crucial to remember to source and produce plants in a sustainable manner. Minimal lipid supplementation can reduce methane output by 20%, increasing energy density and animal productivity. Selecting low- CH4 cows may lower GHG emissions. These findings can lead to additional research to completely understand the impacts of methanogenesis suppression on rumen fermentation and post-absorptive metabolism, which could improve animal productivity and efficiency. Explaining the methane emission pattern of Chinese agriculture and the influencing factors of its spatiotemporal differentiation is of great theoretical and practical significance for carbon neutrality. This paper uses the IPCC coefficient method to measure and analyze the spatial and temporal differentiation characteristics of agricultural methane emission, clarify the dynamic evolution trend of the kernel density function, and reveal the key influencing factors of agricultural methane emission with geographical detectors. The results show that China's agricultural methane emissions showed a first increasing and then declining trend. Agricultural methane emissions decreased from 21.4587 million tons to 17.6864 million tons, with an upward trend from 2000 to 2005, a significant decline in 2006, a slow change from 2007 to 2015, and a significant decline from 2015 to 2019. In addition, the emissions pattern of the three major grain functional areas is characteristic; in 2019, agricultural methane emissions from main producing area, main sales area, and balance area were 10.8406 million tons, 1.2471 million tons, and 5.599 million tons, respectively. The main grain producing area is the main area of methane emissions, and the emission pattern will not change in the short term. The variability of grain functional areas is the decisive factor for the difference in agricultural methane emissions. The state of industrial structure is the key influencing factor for adjusting the spatial distribution—the explanatory power of the industrial structure to the main producing areas reached 0.549; the level of agricultural development is the most core influencing factor of the spatial pattern of the main grain sales area—the explanatory power reached 0.292; and the level of industrialization and the industrial structure are the core influencing factors of the spatial pattern of the balance area—the explanatory power reached 0.545 and 0.479, respectively. Trigger mechanisms are proposed for gas hydrate decomposition, methane emissions, and glacier collapse in polar regions. These mechanisms are due to tectonic deformation waves in the lithosphere–asthenosphere system, caused by large earthquakes in subduction zones, located near the polar regions: the Aleutian arc, closest to the Arctic, and the Antarctica–Chilean and Tonga–Kermadec–Macquarie subduction zones. Disturbances of the lithosphere are transmitted over long distances (of the order of 2000–3000 km and more) at a speed of about 100 km/year. Additional stresses associated with them come to the Arctic and Antarctica several decades after the occurrence of seismic events. On the Arctic shelf, additional stresses destroy the microstructure of metastable gas hydrates located in frozen rocks at shallow depths, releasing the methane trapped in them and leading to filtration and emissions. In West Antarctica, these wave stresses lead to decreases in the adhesions of the covered glaciers with underlying bedrock, sharp accelerations of their sliding into the sea, and fault occurrences, reducing pressure on the underlying rocks containing gas hydrates, which leads to their decomposition and methane emissions. Methane emissions into mine workings and the atmosphere are still a significant environmental and work safety problem. Since 2000, the Rydułtowy coal mine, located in the western part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, has been struggling with significant methane emissions compared to the previous period. The distribution of the methane content in coal seams was analysed, and the factors that influenced it were reviewed. Then, the annual variability in methane emissions in mining excavations was investigated, and the depth of coal extraction was linked to methane conditions and the time of mining works. It has been shown that the currently observed distribution of methane in coal seams is the result of, inter alia, the geological development of the western part of the basin, the lithological character of coal-bearing Carboniferous deposits and overburden, and fault tectonics. The sorption capacity of coal seams decreases with increasing temperature and the coal rank. The amount of methane emitted into mine workings depends mainly on the methane content in the coal seams in mining sites and on the sorption capacity of the coal seams. The depth of exploitation, increasing from year to year, leads to an increase in the methane content in coal seams and a simultaneous decrease in the sorption capacity of coal, which will result in higher methane emissions in the future. Rosemary extract (RE) is characterized as an antioxidant, and it has the potential to reduce methane emission and change microbial fermentation. Hence, to the extent of the evaluation of RE in ruminant nutrition, the in vitro fermentation technique was used to investigate the effects of RE on the fermentation characteristics of a total mixed ration (TMR) fed to dairy cows. Different doses of RE were added to the TMR to obtain different concentrations of antioxidants, including 0 (CON), 0.05 (LRE), and 0.10 g/kg (HRE). A total of 500 mg ground TMR was incubated in buffer solution and rumen fluid for 48 h at 39 °C. Nutrient degradability, gas production parameters, gas composition, fermentation parameters, and microbial composition were analyzed. The results showed that nutrient degradability and total volatile fatty acid concentration were not affected by the treatments. Furthermore, total methane production and proportion were depressed in a dose-dependent way. The RE increased the propionate concentration and proportion linearly and decreased the acetate concentration and proportion linearly. Finally, microbial diversity analysis showed that the richness and evenness indexes were unchanged by different treatments, while Prevotella_1 was decreased and Prevotella_7 was increased with RE supplementation. In conclusion, RE is an effective inhibitor of methane emission of microbial fermentation and changed the profile of volatile fatty acids with no disadvantageous effects on diet utilization. In 1995–1998 and 2013–2016, we measured methane fluxes (1Q-median-3Q, mgC m−2 h−1) in the Petushikha black alder swamp of the boreo-nemoral zone of European Russia. At microelevations (EL sites), flat surfaces (FL), microdepressions (DEP), and water surfaces of streams and channels (STR) sites, the fluxes comprised 0.01–0.03–0.09, 0.02–0.06–0.19, 0.04–0.14–0.43, and 0.10–0.21–0.44, respectively. The biggest uncertainty of methane fluxes was caused by seasonal variability (the level of relative variability of fluxes is a nonparametric analogue of the coefficient of variation) which comprised 144%, then by spatial variability—105%, and the smallest by interannual variability—75%. Both spatial and temporal variability of methane fluxes at different elements of the microrelief is heterogeneous: the most variable are communities that are "unstable" in terms of hydrological conditions, such as FL and DEP, and the least variable are the most drained EL and the most moistened STR ("stable" in terms of hydrological conditions). The obtained data on the fluxes and their spatial and temporal variability are consistent with the literature data and can be used to optimize the process of planning studies of the methane budget of "sporadic methane sources", such as waterlogged forests. Salt migration may be another reason why pore-gas hydrates dissociate in permafrost, besides pressure and temperature changes. Temperature variations in frozen hydrate-saturated sediments interacting with a NaCl solution have been studied experimentally at a constant temperature, ~−6 °C typical for permafrost. The experiments with frozen sandy samples containing metastable methane hydrate show that the migration of Na+ ions in the NaCl solution and their accumulation in the sediments can induce heat-consuming hydrate dissociation and ice melting. The hydrate-saturated frozen soils cool down at higher rates than their hydrate-free counterparts and require more time to recover their initial temperature. The temperature effects in hydrate-saturated frozen sediments exposed to contact with NaCl solutions depend strongly on salt concentration. Our results show that biological treatment could reduce fiber components while increasing feed digestibility, providing new insight into the use of biological pretreatment to produce ruminant feed. According to the results, biological processing of mushroom cultivation substrate might increase in vitro fermentation. In conclusion, mushroom-cultivated substrate might be used as feed in ruminant diets. The current study was carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of mushroom-uncultivated and -cultivated substrates, and their in vitro gas and methane production. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, and analyzed with GLM using SAS 9.4. Analysis of the structural morphology of mushroom-cultivated substrate was performed using a scanning electron microscope. Mushroom cultivation led to lower ether extract, acid detergent fiber, and crude fiber level of substrate (p < 0.05). Mushroom-cultivated substrate showed higher in vitro cumulative gas production (p < 0.05). Moreover, mushroom cultivation led to a higher sample surface, and improved the microorganisms' access to feed materials, thus stimulating rumen fermentation and increasing methane production (p < 0.05). The organic matter digestibility, metabolizable energy, and net energy lactation values were higher for mushroom-cultivated substrate than uncultivated substrate. The results demonstrate that mushroom-cultivation not only increases the contact surface of cellulose, leading to higher ruminal microorganisms' access to feedstuff, but could also had higher nutritive value; this material might be used in ruminant ration formulation, to reduce environmental pollution and feed costs. Onshore seeps are recognized as strong sources of methane (CH4), the second most important greenhouse gas. Seeps actively emitting CH4 were recently found in floodplains of West Siberian rivers. Despite the origin of CH4 in these seeps is not fully understood, they can make substantial contribution in regional greenhouse gas emission. We used high-resolution satellite Sentinel-2 imagery to estimate seep areas at a regional scale. Convolutional neural network based on U-Net architecture was implemented to overcome difficulties with seep recognition. Ground-based field investigations and unmanned aerial vehicle footage were coupled to provide reliable training dataset. The seep areas were estimated at 2885 km2 or 1.5% of the studied region; most seep areas were found within the Ob' river floodplain. The overall accuracy of the final map reached 86.1%. Our study demonstrates that seeps are widespread throughout the region and provides a basis to estimate seep CH4 flux in entire Western Siberia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Enteric methane emissions from ruminants are greater with pasture-based diets; however, it is not clear which abatement practices are effective to reduce methane emissions under grazing conditions. The objective of this review was to identify and describe enteric methane abatement practices for ruminants that are applicable under grazing conditions. Decreasing the pre-grazing herbage mass reduced methane emissions per unit of product. Other grazing management practices such as increased stocking rate, decreased forage maturity, rotational stocking, and incorporating tannin-containing or non-tannin-containing legumes showed inconsistent results. Nitrogen fertilization or silvopastoral systems did not modify methane emissions, although they may alter carbon sequestration in a system. Supplementation in grazing conditions shows inconsistent responses on methane emissions. However, lipid supplementation showed promising results. Identifying and implementing grazing strategies and supplementation practices under grazing conditions is required to increase efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of these systems. Ruminants produce approximately 30% of total anthropogenic methane emissions globally. The objective of this manuscript was to review nutritional enteric methane abatement practices for ruminants that are applicable under grazing conditions. A total of 1548 peer-reviewed research articles related to the abatement of enteric methane emissions were retrieved and classified into four categories: non-experimental, in vitro, in vivo confined, and in vivo grazing. The methane abatement strategies for grazing systems were arranged into grazing management and supplementation practices. Only 9% of the retrieved papers have been conducted under grazing conditions. Eight grazing management practices have been evaluated to reduce methane emissions. Decreasing the pre-grazing herbage mass reduced the methane emission per unit of product. Other grazing management practices such as increased stocking rate, decreased forage maturity, rotational stocking, and incorporating tannin-containing or non-tannin-containing feeds showed contradictory results. This study estimated the effects of oil sources on fermentation characteristics, greenhouse gas, microbial diversity, and biohydrogenation of fatty acids in the rumen. In vitro ruminal incubation was performed with 7 mg of oil source, 15 mL rumen buffer, and 150 mg of synthetic diet at 39 °C for 0, 3, 6, 12, and 24 h. Oil sources consisted of corn oil (CO; linoleic acid (C18:2n-6)), linseed oil (LSO; linolenic acid (C18:3n-3)), or Ca-salts (protected C18:2n-6). The ruminal gas was collected for CH4 and CO2 analysis. Incubated rumen buffer was sub-sampled for the analysis of microbial quantification, fermentation characteristics, and fatty acid profiles. The results showed that Ca-salt increased acetate (p = 0.013), while CO increased propionate (p = 0.007). Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus flavefaciens, and R. albus increased (p < 0.05) with Ca-salt after 12 h of incubation, while Streptococcus bovis increased (p < 0.05) by LSO. The CO and Ca-salt resulted in the highest C18:2n-6 (p = 0.002), while LSO resulted in the highest C18:3n-3 (p = 0.001). The Ca-salt had the lowest C18:0 (p = 0.002), but the highest C18:1cis-9 (p = 0.004).
