During the exploitation of nuclear reactors, various U-Al based ternary intermetallides are formed in the fuel-cladding interaction layer. Structure and physical properties of these intermetallides determine the radiation resistance of cladding and, ultimately, the reliability and lifetime of the nuclear reactor. In current research, U(Al, Si)3 composition was studied as a potential constituent of an interaction layer. Phase content of the alloy of an interest was ordered U(Al, Si)3, structure of which was reported earlier, and pure Al (constituting less than 20 vol % of the alloy). This alloy was investigated prior and after the irradiation performed by Ar ions at 30 keV. The irradiation was performed on the transmission electron microscopy (TEM, JEOL, Japan) samples, characterized before and after the irradiation process. Irradiation induced disorder accompanied by stress relief. Furthermore, it was found that there is a dose threshold for disordering of the crystalline matter in the irradiated region. Irradiation at doses equal or higher than this threshold resulted in almost solely disordered phase. Using the program “Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter” (SRIM), the parameters of penetration of Ar ions into the irradiated samples were estimated. Binary high temperature "Al3Mn" (T-phase) and its extensions in ternary systems were the subjects of numerous crystallographic investigations. The results were ambiguous regarding the existence or lack of the center of symmetry: both Pna21 and Pnam space groups were reported. Our research on the Al–Mn–Pt T-phase allowed concluding that inside a continuous homogeneity region, the structure of the Al-rich T-phase (e.g., Al78Mn17.5Pt4.5) belongs to the non-centrosymmetric Pna21 space group, while the structure of the Al-poor T-phase (such as Al71.3Mn25.1Pt3.6) is centrosymmetric, i.e., Pnam. Electrodeposition of aluminum and its alloys is of great interest in the aerospace, automobile, microelectronics, energy, recycle, and other industrial sectors, as well as for defense and, potentially, electrochemical printing applications. Here, for the first time, we report room-temperature electroplating of pure aluminum on copper and nickel substrates from an ionic liquid (IL) consisting of 1-Hexyl-3-methylimidazolium (HMIm) cation and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (TFSI) anion, with a high concentration of 8 mol/L AlCl3 aluminum precursor. The aluminum deposits are shown to have a homogeneous and dense nanocrystalline structure. A quasi-reversible reaction is monitored, where the current is affected by both charge transfer and mass transport. The electrocrystallization of Al on Ni is characterized by instantaneous nucleation. The deposited Al layers are dense, homogeneous, and of good surface coverage. They have a nanocrystalline, single-phase Al (FCC) structure, with a dislocation density typical of Al metal. An increase in the applied cathodic potential from −1.3 to −1.5 V vs. Pt resulted in more than one order of magnitude increase in the deposition rate (to ca. 44 μm per hour), as well as in ca. one order of magnitude finer grain size. Quinary AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA) is one of the most studied alloys in the recent decade due to its outstanding properties. However, it is still far from becoming an applicable industrial alloy. To our understanding, in order to promote this, the role of elements, constituting the quinary alloy, needs to be defined. Knowing the role of each element, modification of the quinary alloy toward minimization of its disadvantages will be possible. In the current research, we shed some light on this subject, presenting a thorough investigation of the microstructure (carried out using scanning and transmission electron microscopy) and mechanical properties, performed by microhardness and fractography post small punch test (SPT), of five equiatomic quaternary alloys, constituting the quinary system, namely: CoCrFeNi, AlCoFeNi, AlCoCrNi, AlCoCrFe, and AlCrFeNi. CoCrFeNi (i.e., w/o Al) was found to be Face Centered Cubic (FCC) solid solution, exhibiting relatively low micro-hardness and ductile fracture post SPT measurement. AlCoFeNi (i.e., w/o Cr) was essentially single phase B2. Other alloys had a mixed BCC + B2 dual phase content with variable microstructures and sizes of particles. The fine microstructure of the alloy without Ni implies eutectic solidification or spinodal decomposition. This fine microstructure imposed remarkable high hardness though the alloy was too brittle and unmachinable. Among the BCC/B2 mixture alloys, Fe and Co-less ones resembled the most quinary AlCoCrFeNi in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A-T-Al aluminides, where A = actinide, lanthanide or rare earth elements and T=transition metals, have attracted considerable attention as potential materials where heavy fermions may be formed. This led to the discovery of superconducting properties in cubic AT2Al20 compounds with CeCr2Al20-type crystal structure. Other Al-rich aluminides, belonging to these A-T-Al systems, exhibited different physical properties as a function of their crystal structure. Thus, predicting the stable structure of the Al-richest phase that will form in the A-T-Al systems is highly valuable. Stability of the crystal structures, forming in the CeT2Al20 and YRe2Al20 systems, was studied in current research using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is demonstrated that the total spin magnetic moment of the transition metal can be used as a descriptor for phase stability assessment in the AT2Al20 systems, where T is a 5d transition metal. Basing on crystallographic considerations, degree of distortion of the coordination polyhedrons, formed around T atoms, can be directly connected to the specific type of structure crystallizing in these systems.
