The steep and unstable terrain found on debris-covered glaciers, rock glaciers, talus slopes, moraines and other proglacial features often make terrestrial ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys unsafe or cost-prohibitive. To address these challenges, this research introduces a novel approach for studying buried ice using multi-low-frequency drone-based GPR. Monostatic antennas of 50, 100, and 200 MHz were flown along a transect spanning a debris-covered glacier and an ice–debris complex at Shár Shaw Tagà (Grizzly Creek) in southwest Yukon, Canada. The drone-based results were compared to manual GPR at two locations along the transect. The two manual segments were conducted using the same radar system in a bi-static mode and included common mid-point (CMP) surveys. Overall, the drone-based radar successfully identified buried ice and enabled estimation of ice body thickness. Notably, CMP results confirmed layer characteristics and enabled depths to be measured across the entire drone-based transect. Discrimination of detail across a range of depths was made possible by comparing the three low frequencies, highlighting the possibility of using this method for future investigations of debris thickness in addition to quantifying buried ice. Actively heated fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (aFO-DTS) measures soil moisture content at sub-meter intervals across kilometres of fiber-optic cable. The technology has great potential for environmental monitoring but calibration at field scales with variable soil conditions is challenging. To better understand and quantify the errors associated with aFO-DTS soil moisture measurements, we use a parametric numerical modeling approach to evaluate different error factors for uniform soil. A thermo-hydrogeologic, unsaturated numerical model is used to simulate a 0.01 m by 0.01 m two-dimensional domain, including soil and a fiber-optic cable. Results from the model are compared to soil moisture values calculated using the commonly used Tcum calibration method for aFO-DTS. The model is found to have high accuracy between measured and observed saturations for static hydrologic conditions but shows discrepancies for more realistic settings with active recharge. We evaluate the performance of aFO-DTS soil moisture calculations for various scenarios, including varying recharge duration and heterogeneous soils. The aFO-DTS accuracy decreases as the variability in soil properties and intensity of recharge events increases. Further, we show that the burial of the fiber-optic cable within soil may adversely affect calculated results. Climate change has effects on hydrological change in multiple aspects, particularly in the headwaters of the Yellow River (HWYR), which is widely covered by climate-sensitive frozen ground. In this study, the annual runoff was partitioned into four runoff compositions: winter baseflow, snowmelt runoff, rainy season runoff, and recession flow. In addition, the effects of global warming, precipitation change, and frozen ground degradation were considered in long-term variation analyses of the runoff compositions. The moving t-test was employed to detect change points of the hydrometeorological data series from 1961 to 2013, and flow duration curves were used to analyze daily runoff regime change in different periods. It was found that the abrupt change points of cold season runoff, such as recession flow, winter baseflow, and snowmelt runoff, are different from that of the rainy season runoff. The increase in winter baseflow and decrease in snowmelt runoff at the end of 1990s was closely related to global warming. In the 21st century, winter baseflow presented a larger relative increase compared to rainy season runoff. The correlation analyses indicate that winter baseflow and snowmelt runoff are mainly controlled by water-resource-related factors, such as rainy season runoff and the accumulated precipitation in cold season. To analyze the global warming impacts, two runoff coefficients—winter baseflow discharge rate (Rw) and direct snowmelt runoff coefficients (Rs)—were proposed, and their correlation with freezing–thawing indices were analyzed. The increase of Rw is related to the increase in the air temperature thawing index (DDT), but Rs is mainly controlled by the air temperature freezing index (DDF). Meanwhile, the direct snowmelt runoff coefficient (Rs) is significantly and positively correlated to DDF and has decreased at a rate of 0.0011/year since 1980. Under global warming, the direct snowmelt runoff (runoff increment between March to May) of the HWYR could decrease continuously in the future due to the decrease of accumulative snow in cold season and frozen ground degradation. Hydrological responses to climate change are a widely concerning question, particularly for the source region of the Yellow River (SRYR), which is sensitive to climate change and is widely underlain by frozen ground. In considering climate change impacts on catchment properties, the traditional separation approach based on the Budyko framework was modified to identify and quantify the climatic causes of discharge changes. On the basis of the decomposition method, the traditional separation method and the modified separation method were used to analyse the discharge change in the SRYR. Using the observed annual maximum frozen depth (MFD) to indicate the frozen ground level, the impacts of frozen-ground degradation on the discharge change were further considered using the modified separation method. Our results show that the traditional separation approach underestimated climate-induced discharge change; over the past half-century, the discharge change in the SRYR has been primarily controlled by climate change. Increasing air temperature is generally a negative force on discharge generation; however, it also causes frozen ground to degrade—a positive factor for discharge generation. Such conflicting effects enhance the uncertainty in assessments of hydrological responses to climate change in the sub-basins with widely distributed permafrost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
