The Greek marble statue of the Auriga of Mozia Island, in Sicily, is the most important artwork displayed at the Whitaker Foundation Archaeological Museum. It underwent geophysical investigations twice, in 2012 and 2021, to assess the marble's degradation. The 2012 investigation prepared the statue for transfer to the Paul Getty Museum in New York and repositioning on an anti-seismic pedestal. The 2021 investigation evaluated potential new damage before another transfer. Both investigations utilized 3D ultrasonic tomography (UST) to detect degraded marble areas and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to identify internal discontinuities, such as fractures or lesions, and locate metal pins that were previously inserted to reassemble the statue and its pedestal. Results from the UST indicate an average marble velocity of approximately 4700 m/s, suggesting good mechanical strength, with some areas showing lower velocities (~3000 m/s) within the material's variability range. The GPR profiles demonstrated internal signal homogeneity, excluding internal fracture surfaces or lesions, and confirmed the presence of metallic pins. This study highlights the effectiveness of integrating UST and GPR for non-invasive diagnostics of marble sculptures, providing detailed insights into the marble's condition and identifying hidden defects or damage. Inefficiency and poor quality are the main problems in polishing natural heterogeneous marbles using sol-gel (SG) diamond pads. A strategy was proposed to address these issues by establishing a natural heterogeneous marble polishing model based on the optimal polishing time. The surface evolution and optimal time for polishing natural heterogeneous marble were systematically investigated. Six different types of marbles were polished by the sol-gel diamond pads. The surface glossiness, roughness, peak–valley value, and surface morphology of the marbles were measured and analyzed after different polishing times. The optimal polishing time for each marble was revealed using sol-gel diamond pads. The experimental results show that the standard deviation of the hardness distribution of marble tile significantly affects the material removal inconsistency and evolution of the surface during polishing, resulting in different optimal polishing times for different kinds of marble. The larger the standard deviation of the hardness of the marble is, the more difficult it is to obtain better surface quality, and the orange peel effect is more likely to occur. Furthermore, the optimal polishing time has a good logarithmic relationship with the standard deviation of the hardness distribution. Finally, a curve model of the optimal polishing time for each marble was established. The determination of the optimal polishing time can effectively optimize the polishing process, simplify the processing flow, improve production efficiency, and reduce production costs. The antependia, realized in polychrome marbles during the Baroque period in two Christian churches of Apulia (Southern Italy), were on-site petrographically investigated by the naked eye to obtain information regarding the types of used rocks; the precision in the making of the marble tesserae was also assessed. Most of the polychrome marbles recognized were taken from buildings and monuments realized during the Roman imperial period; other marbles quarried during the Baroque period, mainly from Italian geological outcrops, were also identified. In an attempt to reutilize marble waste, a new approach is presented in the current study to promote its use in the field of shielding against ionizing radiation. In this study, we aimed to develop a novel and sustainable/eco-friendly lead-free radiation shielding material by improving artificial marble (AM) produced from marble waste combined with polyester by reinforcing it with bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) nanoparticles. Six samples of AM samples doped with different concentrations ( 0 % ,   5 % ,   10 % ,   15 % , 20 % , and 25 % ) of Bi2O3 nanoparticles were prepared. The linear attenuation coefficient ( L A C ) values were measured experimentally through the narrow beam method at different energies (0.0595   M e V , 0.6617   M e V , 1.1730   M e V , and 1.330   M e V ) for all samples with various concentrations of Bi2O3. Radiological shielding parameters such as half value layer ( H V L ), tenth-value layer ( T V L ), and radiation shielding efficiency ( R S E ) were estimated and compared for all the different samples. The results prove that increasing the concentration of Bi2O3 leads to the enhancement of the radiation shielding properties of the AM as a shielding material. It was observed that as the energy increases, the efficiency of the samples falls. High energy dependence was found when calculating the H V L and T V L values of the samples, which increased with increases in the energy of the incident photons. A comparison between the sample with the most efficient gamma radiation attenuation capability (AM- 25 % ), concrete, and lead was conducted, and a discussion regarding their radiation shielding properties is presented herein. The results show that the AM- 25 % sample is superior to the ordinary concrete over all the studied energy ranges, as evidenced by its significantly lower H V L s . On the contrary, lead is superior to the AM- 25 % sample over all the studied energy ranges owing to its unbeatable density as a shielding material. Overall, this new type of artificial marble has the potential to be used as a radiation shielding material at low- to medium-gamma energy regions, specifically in medical imaging and radiation therapy. In deep underground engineering, the deformation, failure characteristics, and mechanism of surrounding rock under the influence of grain sizes and mineral compositions are not clear. Based on CJPL-II variously colored marbles, the differences in grain size and mineral composition of the marble were analyzed by thin-section analysis and XRD tests, and the effect of intermediate principal stress on the mechanical properties of marble was investigated. Both SEM and microfracture analysis were coupled to reveal the failure mechanisms. The results highlight that the crack initiation strength, damage strength, peak strength, and elasticity modulus of Jinping marble exhibit an increasing trend with an increase in intermediate principal stress, while the peak strain initially increases and subsequently decreases. Moreover, this study established negative correlations between marble strength, brittleness characteristics, and fracture angle with grain size, whereas positive correlations were identified with the content of quartz, sodium feldspar, and the magnitude of the intermediate principal stress. The microcrack density in marble was found to increase with larger grain sizes and decrease with elevated quartz and sodium feldspar content, as well as with increasing intermediate principal stress. Notably, as the intermediate principal stress intensifies and grain size diminishes, the transgranular tensile failure of marble becomes more conspicuous. The Taurus Mountains in the Mediterranean Coastal Basin, considered a biodiversity hotspot, have a rich biodiversity in the Western Palearctic. The number of marble quarries in the Taurus Mountains has dramatically expanded over the past ten years. The objectives of this study are to (i) determine the impacts of quarrying on wildlife and (ii) determine the potential impacts of quarrying on the future of Taurus. A total of 57,547 photos and video images were analyzed on 5447 photo-trap days in two areas, the marble quarries and the control areas. Using 97 randomly selected marble quarries, the area they cover and their annual growth rates were determined. The most commonly seen animals were the wolf (Canis lupus), fox (Vulpes vulpes), lynx (Lynx lynx), and wild boar (Sus scrofa) in the control area, and the jackal (Canis aureus) and hare (Lepus europaeus) in the marble quarries (p < 0.001). Additionally, we found a significant positive correlation between the distance from the geographical center of the marble quarries and the number of dates of wolf, fox and wild boar sightings, with a significant negative correlation for hares (p < 0.05). A positive correlation was found between the area of marble quarries and the duration of operation (R = 0.89, p < 0.00). The waste from quarries, which makes up 79.7% of the total land used for this purpose, is the greatest cause of habitat degradation. According to calculations, even if no new marble quarries are built as of right now, 7.14% of the Taurus Mountains may have disappeared by the year 2027, and by the year 2032, 8.25% of the Taurus ecosystems may have disappeared completely. The Taurus Mountains, a center of Western Palearctic biodiversity, are being threatened by marble quarries. This study advances our knowledge of how marble quarries may affect wildlife. In order to effectively improve the drilling speed in deep hard rock and save drilling costs, this study explores the transformation mechanism and critical velocity range of ultra-high-speed diamond drilling technology on rock breaking effect, using marble as an example. The study establishes an ultra-high-speed single diamond fragmentation model using the finite element method (FEM) and solves for the unknown critical velocity of marble in this drilling technique. Additionally, small diameter bit drilling experiments were conducted on our self-developed ultra-high-speed diamond drilling test bench. Based on existing simulation results and experimental studies, we discuss the critical velocity problem and compare and analyze the change in the rock-breaking mechanism and mechanical specific energy (MSE) under conventional drilling versus ultra-high-speed rotary drilling conditions. Our results indicate that changes in rock breaking mechanisms under ultra-high-speed diamond drilling conditions are limited to a specific speed range and do not persist with increasing speeds. Furthermore, experimental verification confirms that ultra-high-speed diamond drilling can effectively reduce MSE and increase the rate of penetration (ROP) by altering the rock-breaking mode. Small-scale mining (SSM) is responsible for almost all the production of non-metallic minerals in the world and represents around 80% of the mining in Brazil. The lack of direct geological information increases the level of uncertainty associated with the exploratory process, compromises mine planning, limits mineral extraction, and contributes to maximizing environmental issues. In this research, near-surface geophysical methods, including Electrical Resistivity, Capacitive Resistivity, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Transient Electromagnetic (TEM), were applied to characterize a marble deposit in an SSM located in the Campos do Jordão region, São Paulo state, southeast Brazil. The geophysical methods used provide indirect information about the subsurface geology based on the contrast in electrical and electromagnetic properties. Resistivity results show the efficiency of locating marble deposits, as well as fracture zones. GPR profiles allowed for the investigation of the structural heterogeneities in the subsurface. Geophysical data and lithological information from drill holes were integrated into Micromine software and guided the development of a geological model and a conceptual pit model. The information inferred from the pit modeling allowed us to analyze the potential of the deposit and should be used to assist in developing sustainable mining planning. The results of this work demonstrate that the investment in geophysical research can support the modernization of an SSM and contribute to more sustainable and productive mining. Fine-grained soils present engineering challenges. Stabilization with marble powder has shown promise for improving engineering properties. Understanding the temporal evolution of Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and geotechnical properties in stabilized soils could aid strength assessment. This study investigates the stabilization of fine-grained clayey soils using waste marble powder as an alternative binder. Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the geotechnical properties of soil–marble powder mixtures, including Atterberg's limits, compaction characteristics, California Bearing Ratio (CBR), Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), and Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS). The effects of various factors, such as curing time, molding water content, and composition ratios, on UCS, were analyzed using Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) techniques, including histograms, box plots, and statistical modeling. The results show that the CBR increased from 10.43 to 22.94% for unsoaked and 4.68 to 12.46% for soaked conditions with 60% marble powder, ITS rose from 100 to 208 kN/m2 with 60–75% marble powder, and UCS rose from 170 to 661 kN/m2 after 28 days of curing, molding water content (optimum at 22.5%), and composition ratios (optimum at 60% marble powder). Complex modeling yielded R2 (0.954) and RMSE (29.82 kN/m2) between predicted and experimental values. This study demonstrates the potential of utilizing waste marble powder as a sustainable and cost-effective binder for soil stabilization, transforming weak soils into viable construction materials. The tremolite nephrite deposit in Dahua county, Hechi City, Guangxi province, China is a new genetic type of nephrite deposit. It is hosed by Mg-poor limestone (~1.30 wt.% MgO) and intruded by diabase (~45 wt.% SiO2). The Mg and Si contents of these rocks are lower than those of the tremolite (58.18 wt.% SiO2, 13.18 wt.% CaO, 24.16 wt.% MgO), indicating an obviously insufficient source for the metallogenic material that generated the deposit. In particular, some tremolite nephrite ore bodies have no clear contact metamorphism between the host and intrusive rocks, which have the characteristics of stratified mineralization (stratified tremolite nephrite). The origin and mineralization of stratified tremolite nephrite remain poorly constrained. To address this shortcoming, the mineralogy, geochemistry and Sr isotopic of host rock, altered marble, stratified tremolite nephrite and intrusive rock in the Dahua stratified tremolite nephrite deposit were studied. The results show: stratified tremolite nephrite mainly consists of aggregates of microcrystalline-cryptocrystalline tremolites with content exceeding 95%. The in situ rare earth elements (REEs) distribution pattern of hydrothermal calcite in the contact position between stratified tremolite nephrite and marble is similar to that of marine carbonate rock, showing obvious enrichment of HREE, which is different from calcite in limestone and marble. 87Sr/86Sr of stratified tremolite nephrite is relatively uniform, with an average value of 0.7070, within the range of Permian seawater. The mean value of Y/Ho in the hydrothermal calcite is 51.24, indicating that the marine fluid has not been impregnated by terrigenous materials. In summary, the hydrothermal fluid rich in Ca and Si is formed after marine carbonate rocks are altered by marine fluids. Hydrothermal fluids alter diabase rocks formed by altered minerals like titanite, chamosite, zoisite, etc. This process leads to the formation of metallogenic hydrothermal fluids abundant in Si, Ca, Fe and Mg. The metallogenic hydrothermal fluids migrate in faults and fractures of marble and crystallize to form tremolite nephrite under suitable ore-forming conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potential of the supercritical antisolvent micronization (SAS) technique was evaluated for the production of CaO-based particles with a size and a physical structure that could enable high performance for CO2 capture through the calcium looping process. Two sources of calcium derivative compounds were tested, waste marble powder (WMP) and dolomite. The SAS micronization of the derivate calcium acetate was carried out at 60 °C, 200 bar, a 0.5 mL min−1 flow rate of liquid solution, and 20 mg mL−1 concentration of solute, producing, with a yield of more than 70%, needle-like particles. Moreover, since dolomite presents with a mixture of calcium and magnesium carbonates, the influence of the magnesium fraction in the SAS micronization was also assessed. The micronized mixtures with lower magnesium content (higher calcium fraction) presented needle-like particles similar to WMP. On the other hand, for the higher magnesium fractions, the micronized material was similar to magnesium acetate micronization, presenting sphere-like particles. The use of the micronized material in the Ca-looping processes, considering 10 carbonation-calcination cycles under mild and realistic conditions, showed that under mild conditions, the micronized WMP improved CaO conversion. After 10 cycles the micronization, WMP presented a conversion 1.8 times greater than the unprocessed material. Cultural heritage stone materials frequently experience significant discoloration induced by copper corrosion products, especially calcareous stones associated with bronze or copper statues and architectural elements. This alteration originates from the corrosion of unprotected copper, resulting in the formation of various Cu minerals and the migration of soluble ions to adjacent stone materials. Traditional cleaning methods involve mechanical, chemical, and laser techniques, which are generally time-consuming, costly, not ecological, or can possibly damage original materials. The loading of highly effective chelating agents, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), into hydrogels has recently been exploited. However, the preference for synthetic hydrogels has been prominent until now, although they lack renewability and biodegradability and require high costs. This study explores for the first time the potential to clean copper corrosion with bacterial nanocellulose (BC) loaded with EDTA as a biologically based, sustainable, and biodegradable hydrogel. The BC hydrogel was characterised by field emission–scanning electron microscopy (FE–SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR), simultaneous thermal analysis (TG-DSC), and tensile testing. It revealed a nano-fibrous structure with high crystallinity and purity and mechanical properties suitable for cultural heritage applications. The EDTA-loaded hydrogel effectively removed copper stains from marble after 120 min of application. Micro-Raman and colorimetric analyses assessed the cleaning efficacy. A selection of the most outstanding white marble sculptures from Tarraco has been archaeometrically studied to know more about the marble sources and their respective artistic workshops. All are imperial portraits of the 2nd century AD (Trajan, Hadrian, Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius) and a thoracata bust assigned to Hadrian, found on display at the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona (MNAT). The well-established multimethod approach, combining petrography, cathodoluminescence, C and O isotopes and Sr and Mn trace element composition, has revealed the use of different very fine- to fine-grained marbles of the highest quality exploited in classical times. In contrast to what was thought until now, in which all the pieces had been assigned to Luni-Carrara, this present study identifies the use of two varieties of the recently discovered site of Göktepe near Aphrodisias and Paros-lychnites marbles, being Carrara, in minority. This study confirms the importance of strontium concentration and the contribution of cathodoluminescence to distinguish Göktepe from Carrara marble, while carbon and oxygen isotopes were crucial for the identification of Cycladic marble. Finally, in line with recent published interdisciplinary studies, the marble provenance forces us to rethink the discourse on the use of marble, its sculptural workshops and its distribution in this temporal context. The Cava Madre of Candoglia represents an important underground rock cavern in the northwest of Italy, both for historical reasons and for the material that is extracted there: the marble for the continuous reconstruction and renovation works of the Milan Cathedral. Over time, the cavern reached considerable dimensions, and the existing state of stress (considerable horizontal stresses) required the creation of impressive structures to contrast and support the side walls. A complex and effective monitoring system guarantees the continuous control of the cavern. To improve the reliability of the geomechanical characterization and, therefore, of the numerical model that allows the analysis of the stress and strain behavior of the cavern, a back-analysis was developed. This allowed us to "calibrate" the two geomechanical parameters on which there was the greatest uncertainty: the elastic modulus of the marble at the scale of the problem and the lateral thrust coefficient at rest (k0). Finally, the numerical model made the results of the back-analysis more effective, allowing us to verify the support and contrast structures of the walls and to proceed with a careful definition of the project relating to future mining works for the continuation of the exploitation of the existing marble bench. Scouring around bridge abutments is a crucial and complex process that sometimes may lead to the failure of the bridge abutment. Therefore, in the present research, scouring around bridge abutments under clear water conditions was examined without and with countermeasures for providing an economical solution. A total of forty-five experiments were performed under clear water conditions to find the maximum scour depth around the bridge abutment. Experiments were performed in two different phases. In the first phase, scour depth was investigated without any countermeasures. In the second phase, scour depth was investigated using marble and brick waste as a countermeasure. The results showed that the maximum scour depth around the bridge abutment (at a distance of 10 cm on the upstream side and 15 cm on the downstream side of the abutment) for the Froude's number of 0.22 was 0.137 m without any countermeasure. The scouring depth increased up to 40% with an increase in the Froude's number from 0.13 to 0.22. The maximum reduction of scour depth was observed to be 40% and 55% when brick and marble waste were used as a countermeasure, respectively, compared to without a countermeasure case. Marble is one of the materials most susceptible to copper leaching, resulting in easily identifiable turquoise stains on the marble. This problem is particularly relevant when we are talking about marble structures of heritage value. For this reason, conservators look for cleaning materials that are specific to the structure to be treated without damaging the original surface. Materials such as agar have been studied for a long time. Agar creates a controlled water release system that adapts to the needs of conservators who seek the greatest possible cleanliness without damaging the material to be treated. To improve the cleaning, chelating agents such as EDTA are added to the agar composition. However, the microbiological growth and the damage it produces to the original material are disadvantages to take into account. In order to solve these problems, other natural materials with cleaning potential such as kudzu and konjac gels were studied in combination with other chelating agents such as citrate, oxalate, and gluconic acid. For the characterization and evaluation of copper cleaning, various analytical techniques were used, including Raman spectroscopy, colorimetry, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In this study, both konjac and kudzu emerged as promising alternatives to agar, revealing distinctive features such as simplified preparation methods and inherent antimicrobial properties. The EDTA chelator was found to be the most harmful for marble surfaces, as it extracted a greater amount of calcium from the marble during application of the gels doped with it. Citrate and gluconic acid have been identified as a promising substitute to prepare doped gels for the removal of copper stains. The objective of this study is to test the feasibility of time-lapse GPR measurements for the quality control of repairing operations (i.e., injections) on marble blocks. For the experimental activities, we used one of the preferred repairing fillers (epoxy resin) and some blocks from one of the world's most famous marble production area (Carrara quarries in Italy). The selected blocks were paired in a laboratory by overlapping one over the other after inserting very thin spacers in order to simulate air-filled fractures. Fractures were investigated with a 3 GHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) before and after the resin injections to measure the amplitude reduction expected when the resin substitutes the air. The results were compared with theoretical predictions based on the reflection coefficient predicted according to the thin bed theory. A field test was also performed on a naturally fractured marble block selected along the Carrara shore. Both laboratory and field tests validate the GPR as an effective tool for the quality control of resin injections, provided that measurements include proper calibration tests to control the amplitude instabilities and drift effects of the GPR equipment. The method is accurate enough to distinguish the unfilled fractures from the partially filled fractures and from the totally filled fractures. An automatic algorithm was developed and successfully tested for the rapid quantitative analysis of the time-lapse GPR profiles collected before and after the injections. The whole procedure is mature enough to be proposed to the marble industry to improve the effectiveness of repair interventions and to reduce the waste of natural stone reserves. This research intends to enhance the tribo-mechanical and corrosion properties of ADC 12 alloys by incorporating marble dust (MD) as a reinforcing element. Composites with varied MD concentrations (0–10 wt%) were fabricated using a squeeze casting process, addressing the limitations of conventional casting techniques. The microstructural analysis confirmed homogeneous MD dispersion within the ADC 12 matrix, facilitating an effective load transfer and solid interfacial bonding. As MD content increased, the experimental density decreased, while porosity increased from 1.22% to 3.97%. Remarkably, adding 4 wt% MD yielded a 20.41%, 17.63%, and 15.75% enhancement in hardness, tensile, and compression strength compared to the as-cast ADC 12. Incorporating MD particles facilitated Orowan strengthening and Hall–Petch strengthening mechanisms, contributing to the observed improvements. The wear rate was reduced by 18.33% with MD content, showing a 17.57% corrosion reduction at 72 h. These outcomes establish the synergistic benefits of ADC 12 squeeze casting with MD reinforcement, delivering superior tribo-mechanical and corrosion properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Night-time light data (NTL) have been extensively utilized to map urban fringe areas, but to date, there has not been a comprehensive evaluation of the existing spatial clustering methods for delineating the urban fringe using different types of night-time light data. Therefore, we first selected three popular sources of night-time light data (i.e., NPP/VIIRS, Luojia 1-01, and NASA's Black Marble) to identify the urban fringe. The recognition of spatial mutations across the urban–rural gradient was conducted based on changes in night light intensity using a spatial continuous wavelet transform model. Then, we employed three representative dual spatial clustering approaches (i.e., MK-Means, DBSC, and DSC) for extracting urban fringe areas using different NTL. By using dual spatial clustering, the spatial patterns of the mutation points were effectively transformed into homogeneous spatially adjacent clusters, enabling the measurement of similarity between mutation points. Taking Nanjing city, one of China's megacities, as the study area, we found that (1) Compared with the fragmented and concentrated results obtained from the Luojia 1-01, NASA's Black Marble and NPP/VIIRS data can effectively capture the abrupt change of urban fringes with NTL variations; (2) DSC provided a reliable approach for accurately extracting urban fringe areas using NASA's Black Marble data. The demand for cement is increasing every day worldwide. To meet this demand, natural resources are rapidly being depleted. The excessive consumption of natural resources encourages researchers to conduct studies on the use of waste materials instead of cement. Marble waste is one of the major natural wastes abundantly generated worldwide. It has been evaluated that there is a gap in the literature regarding a study comparing the effects of different cooling regimes on cementitious composites with a marble powder (MP) replacement that has been exposed to high temperatures. In this study, waste marble powder (MP) was used as a replacement for cement at percentages of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% by mass. The water-to-binder ratio was kept constant at 0.5 for all mixture groups. Subsequently, the prepared cementitious composites were exposed to high temperatures (300 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C) and subjected to air- and water-cooling regimes. Within the scope of this study, unit weight (Uw), ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), flexural strength (ffs), compressive strength (fcs), and mass loss tests were conducted. Additionally, a microstructure analysis was carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the effect of MP replacement and the cooling regime. When examining the results of the samples tested in the laboratory, it was observed that the mortar with 5% MP replacement exhibited better mechanical properties compared with the others. In general, it can be said that the mechanical properties of samples cooled in air after exposure to high temperatures were better than those of samples cooled in water. As a result of this study, it was determined that MP replacement could positively contribute to the resistance of cementitious composites to high temperatures. This research explores the utilization of the Black Marble nighttime light (NTL) product to detect and assess damage caused by hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. The study first examines average regional NTL trends before and after each disaster, demonstrating that NTL patterns for hurricanes closely align with the features of a resilience curve, unlike those for earthquakes and tornadoes. The relative NTL change ratio is computed using monthly and daily NTL data, effectively reducing variance due to daily fluctuations. Results indicate the robustness of the NTL change ratio in detecting hurricane damage, whereas its performance in earthquake and tornado assessment was inconsistent and inadequate. Furthermore, NTL demonstrates a high performance in identifying hurricane damage in well-lit areas and the potential to detect damage along tornado paths. However, a low correlation between the NTL change ratio and the degree of damage highlights the method's limitation in quantifying damage. Overall, the study offers a promising, prompt approach for detecting damaged/undamaged areas, with specific relevance to hurricane reconnaissance, and points to avenues for further refinement and investigation. Blast charge initiation procedures have a significant impact on both mining safety and production rates. In this study, the inventory benefit of an electric initiation system was investigated to assess its influence on both fragmentation and blast-induced damages. The WipFrag software was used to examine the size distribution and productivity of 12 small-scale blasts initiated by both nonelectric and electric detonators. All blast rounds were initiated with plain-type electric and NONEL detonators. The average burden, spacing, stemming length, and charge weight were, respectively, 0.85 m, 1.10 m, 0.66 m, and 1.1 kg. The results showed that the mesh through which 80% of the blast fragments passed for the electric blast was smaller than the mesh through which the material products from the NONEL blast passed. The results also demonstrated that the generated blast-induced ground vibration (PPV) from all blast rounds for electric blast varied from 0.4–1.2 mm/s and 80–105 dB, while that for nonelectric blast ranged from 0.05–0.2 mm/s and 72–95 dB. As a result, the electric blast initiation technique was found to produce good fragmentation, with a higher percentage of optimum fragment sizes on spec than nonelectrically initiated blasts. There has been an increase in plastic production during the past decades, yet the recycling of plastic remains relatively low. Incorporating plastic in concrete can mitigate environmental pollution. The use of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles as an aggregate weakens properties of concrete. An alternative is to use PET bottles as a binder in the mortar. The PET binder mixed with sand results in weak mortar. Marble and iron slag can enhance PET mortar properties by preventing alkali reactions. This study examines the mechanical and durability properties of PET mortar with different mixes. The mixes were prepared as plastic and marble (PM); plastic and iron slag (PI); plastic, sand, and marble (PSM); plastic, iron slag, and marble (PIM); and plastic, sand, and iron slag (PSI). PM with 30–45% plastic content had increased compressive and flexural strength up to 35.73% and 20.21%, respectively. PI with 30–35% plastic content showed strength improvements up to 29.19% and 5.02%, respectively. However, at 45% plastic content, strength decreased by 8.8% and 27.90%. PSM, PIM, and PSI specimens had nearly double the strength of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) mortar. The durability of PET mortar in chemical solutions, mainly 5% HCl and 20% NaOH, indicate that mass decreased after 3, 7, and 28 days. All specimens showed good resistance to HCl and NaCl solutions compared to OPC mortar. However, its resistance to NaOH is low compared to OPC mortar. Ammonium N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)oxamate (AmPicOxam), synthesized from O-methyl-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)oxamate, was spectroscopically and structurally characterized and assayed as a novel precursor for the protection and consolidation of carbonate stone substrates. An in-depth characterization of treated and untreated biomicritic limestone and white Carrara marble samples was carried out by means of SEM microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, helium pycnometry, determination of water transport properties, and pull-off tests. The improved solubility (1.00 M, 16.5% w/w) of the title compound with respect to ammonium oxalate (0.4 M, 5% w/w) results in the formation of a thicker protective coating of calcium oxalate (CaOx) dihydrate (weddellite) on marble and biomicrite samples after the treatment with 5% and 12% w/w water solutions, producing a reduction in the stone porosity and increased cohesion. The annexation of the Noricum Kingdom by the Roman Empire in 16 BC brought an increase in the trading relations between the empire and its northern neighbours. A first hub for these relations was the emporium on the Magdalensberg in Noricum Mediterraneum (today southern Carinthia/Austria). During the last decades, archaeological investigations of this settlement in a remote mountainous area revealed, inter alia, different kinds of marble decoration and architecture. Provenance analyses using a combination of different methods, including isotope analysis, trace element analysis and the analysis of inclusion fluids, show that the marbles used on the Magdalensberg are of different origins. Widely used were medium- to coarse-grained Alpine marbles from Roman quarries of the region of Gummern. Prominently used for plates, tiles, profiles, etc. were several types of fine-grained marbles of different origins. One group definitely originated from the quarries of Carrara (Carrara white and Carrara Bardiglio), testifying to the trading relations with northern Italy after the integration of Noricum into the Roman Empire. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of partially replacing cement with a blend of marble waste powder (MWP) and granite waste powder (GWP) in mortar, with the goal of reducing the environmental harm caused by cement. The investigation included an analysis of the distinctive properties of the two waste powders individually, as well as initial tests with various ratios to determine the optimal combination that yields the highest strength. It was observed that a 50% MWP to 50% GWP blend produced the most substantial strength. Subsequently, the effect of partial replacement of cement with the blend of marble and granite waste powder (MGWP) at various increments of 5%, ranging from 0% to 30%, was evaluated by subjecting the mortar to numerous tests to assess its workability, physical, mechanical, durability, and microstructural properties. The analysis of the employed waste powders confirmed that the GWP can be classified as a natural pozzolan material belonging to Class N. As the proportion of MGWP increased, the workability of the mortar mixes decreased. However, incorporating MGWP up to 15% resulted in enhancements in bulk density, compression strength, and homogeneity, with the best performance observed at a 10% MGWP content. Microstructure analysis confirmed that the addition of MGWP enhanced the bonding of C–S–H and C–H, leading to a denser morphological structure in the mixes, particularly at a 10% MGWP content. Marble kitchen countertops and other natural stone surfaces are often stained by various food ingredients and contaminants during daily use and require frequent cleaning, which is time-consuming and leads to the wasting of water. If the surface is coated with a hydrophobic and oleophobic coating, food ingredient contamination becomes easier to wipe clean. Therefore, a UV-curable monomer with fluorocarbon branched chains was synthesized and added to UV-curable coatings in different ratios. The preferred formulation that meets the basic performance requirements of UV-curable coatings, and has the best hydrophobic and oleophobic properties, was designed and selected. The formulation was upgraded by adding a hydrofluoric ether (HFE) solvent. These upgraded formulations were tested for hydrophobicity and oleophobicity under various conditions. The addition of an HFE solvent improves the initial water and cetane contact angles of the paint film, as well as the water and cetane contact angles under various conditions. Moreover, the upgraded formulations have better stain resistance. The degree of hydrophobicity and oleophobicity improvement is positively correlated with the addition of an HFE solvent. The UV-curable fluorocarbon polyurethane coating has good adhesion on a marble surface that has been polished and primed. Due to the presence of TEOH-6 instead of PFOA, the low content of fluorocarbon functional groups effectively located on the film surface makes the coating quite stable and safe. A multi-analytical approach is usually applied in provenance studies of archaeological marbles. However, for very similar marble varieties, additional techniques and approaches are required. This paper uses a case study to illustrate this with two Catalan marble districts (Gualba and Ceret) and three sets of archaeological marbles. The common multi-method approach is unable to discriminate between the two districts, and such distinction is only partially glimpsed using unsupervised multivariate data analyses on a transformed geochemical dataset of reference samples. In contrast, several supervised classification models have been successfully trained to discriminate between the quarries without any special data transformation. All the trained models agree to assign the three sets of archaeological samples to the Gualba quarry district. In this study, we investigated the impact of micro- and nano-sized barium oxide addition on the radiation-shielding properties of red clay tiles mixed with waste marble and different sizes of BaO (micro- or nanoparticles) for comparative analysis. The linear attenuation coefficients (LAC) of the prepared samples were measured using an HPGe detector between 0.060 and 1.333 MeV. Moreover, a comparison was made between the experimental micro-composites and values obtained by Phy-X software. The results revealed that the red clay/waste marble tile composites doped with nano-sized BaO demonstrated superior radiation-shielding properties compared to those doped with micro-sized BaO. At 1.33 MeV, WR-20mBaO (containing 20 wt % micro-sized BaO) and WR-20nBaO (containing 20 wt % nano-sized BaO) exhibited HVL values of 4.75 cm and 4.25 cm, respectively. The lower HVL value of WR-20nBaO indicates superior radiation-shielding performance, highlighting the potential benefits of using nano-sized BaO as a radiation-shielding additive. Our findings also demonstrated that increasing the amount of BaO deposited onto red clay mixed-waste marble resulted in improved radiation-shielding properties. Our study demonstrates that adjusting the concentration of BaO is a viable strategy for enhancing the radiation attenuation properties of red clay tiles. Meristematic black fungi are a highly damaging group of microorganisms responsible for the deterioration of outdoor exposed monuments. Their resilience to various stresses poses significant challenges for removal efforts. This study focuses on the community of meristematic fungi inhabiting the external white marble of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, where they contribute to its darkening. Twenty-four strains were isolated from two differently exposed sites of the Cathedral, and their characterization was conducted. Phylogenetic analysis using ITS and LSU rDNA regions revealed a wide diversity of rock-inhabiting fungal strains within the sampled areas. Eight strains, belonging to different genera, were also tested for thermal preferences, salt tolerance, and acid production to investigate their tolerance to environmental stressors and their interaction with stone. All tested strains were able to grow in the range of 5–30 °C, in the presence 5% NaCl, and seven out of eight strains were positive for the production of acid. Their sensitivities to essential oils of thyme and oregano and to the commercial biocide Biotin T were also tested. This research concerns a stylistic and archaeometric study of an ancient marble female bust recently discovered by the Trapani Lombardo family of Reggio Calabria (Southern Italy) and delivered to the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia (SABAP). Based on the first technical, stylistic, and iconographic observations made by the competent bodies, it is a half-length portrait bust from the Roman era, which precisely had the function of faithfully reproducing the physiognomy of the depicted subject. The research aimed to establish the authenticity of the artwork and the origin of the raw material, providing indications about the textural and compositional features and of the alteration products as well as identifying traces of any previous restoration interventions. For these purposes, after a preliminary assessment of the state of conservation of the bust using visual inspections supported by a handheld digital microscope, different analytical techniques, including polarized optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDX), carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratio determinations (δ13C and δ18O), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), were used. The results highlighted the originality of the artifact, thus remarking on the importance of the precious archaeological find to be included in the cataloging of tangible assets in the panorama of Italian cultural heritage. Simple Summary: Oocyte maturation is a complex process in which the oocyte acquires the capacity to be fertilized and to support embryo development. Although oocyte maturation in vitro has undergone significant advancements, the systems that are currently in place still need to be further optimized. This study aimed to examine alternative culture systems for bovine oocyte in vitro maturation. Specifically, we used liquid marbles and differentially shaped 96-well plates (flat, v-shaped, and round-bottom). Both systems were able to support oocyte nuclear maturation, but embryo development was reduced when in vitro maturation was performed in liquid marbles. Differently shaped wells during maturation did not affect embryo yield but presented a reduction in blastocyst quality. Hence, 96-well plates might be an alternative culture system to mature oocytes in small groups, but further analyses to test possible toxic effects are needed. In vivo-matured oocytes exhibit higher developmental competence than those matured in vitro but mimicking the in vivo environment by in vitro conditions has been challenging. Until now, conventional two-dimensional (2D) systems have been used for in vitro maturation of bovine cumulus-oocytes-complexes (COCs). However, using such systems present certain limitations. Therefore, alternative low-cost methodologies may help to optimize oocyte in vitro maturation. Here, we used two different systems to culture COCs and evaluate their potential influence on embryo development and quality. In the first system, we used treated fumed silica particles to create a 3D microenvironment (liquid marbles; LM) to mature COCs. In the second system, we cultured COCs in 96-well plates with different dimensions (flat, ultra-low attachment round-bottom, and v-shaped 96-well plates). In both systems, the nuclear maturation rate remained similar to the control in 2D, showing that most oocytes reached metaphase II. However, the subsequent blastocyst rate remained lower in the liquid marble system compared with the 96-well plates and control 2D systems. Interestingly, a lower total cell number was found in the resulting embryos from both systems (LM and 96-well plates) compared with the control. In conclusion, oocytes matured in liquid marbles or 96-well plates showed no remarkable change in terms of meiotic resumption. None of the surface geometries influenced embryo development while oocyte maturation in liquid marbles led to reduced embryo development. These findings show that different geometry during maturation did not have a large impact on oocyte and embryo development. Lower embryo production after in vitro maturation in liquid marbles was probably detected because in vitro maturation was performed in serum-free medium, which makes oocytes more sensitive to possible toxic effects from the environment. The Earth Sciences Museum of the University of Bari (Italy) boasts the presence of a precious and complete nineteenth-century collection of white marbles and colored stones used by the Romans to embellish their buildings and, afterward, reuse in new buildings and artworks for their high symbolic and aesthetic value. This collection, arranged by Francesco and Filippo Belli, consists of 577 samples and a printed inventory and other documents, which allowed to reconstruct the history of the collection. Another collection of 29 marble samples was donated to the museum in 2010 by the Armenise family. Both collections represent a very useful reference tool in provenance studies for marble pieces at the archaeological and artistic sites and for samples of other collections. The systematic organization of these collections and their sharing among scholars, especially through the web network, is clearly essential. The work presented here focuses on the most recent discoveries about Belli's collection, on the results of the identification of Armenise's marbles and stones, and above all, on the actions undertaken in recent years in order to valorize this museum's heritage. Specifically, both collections were reorganized following novel insights about lithotypes and the provenance of each sample, a detailed database including data on each sample was created, and a website reporting information and images of the two collections was built in order to guarantee the correct dissemination of data. This paper presents an investigation into the bond strength of three common façade stones, namely, travertine, granite, and marble, to a concrete substrate using a shear-splitting test. The effects of anchorage, the number of curing days, and the presence of an anti-freezing agent in cement–sand mortar on bond strength were studied. The results show that the number of curing days had a significant impact on the bond strength between the stones and the substrates. The presence of an anti-freezing agent and accelerator increased bonding during the initial days, but this effect gradually decreased. The use of anchorage had a positive effect on the bond strength, particularly with fewer curing days. Granite had the lowest bond strength when no anchorage was used due to its low permeability. Based on the findings, a novel fuzzy logic approach was proposed to predict the bond strength. This study is concerned with recent analyses of seven marble statues from the imperial cycle of the Augusteum of Rusellae, in the south of Tuscany, Italy. The sculptures represent the deified couple Augustus and Livia, Livilla, Claudius, an anonymous young girl and a headless cuirassed emperor (maybe Domitian). In addition, a fragment of a leg, from another cuirassed statue, was also considered. All of them are preserved in the city of Grosseto, in the Maremma Archaeology and Art Museum. Still preserved traces of polychromy and gilding were investigated both in situ, using non-invasive portable techniques, and in laboratory, taking two micro-samples. The non-invasive approach was based on multi-band imaging techniques (Vis, UVL and VIL) integrated with analyses (XRF, reflectance spectroscopy). A portable optical microscopy was also used for documenting the analysed areas. Two micro-samples from the gilding decoration of the headless cuirassed statue were also analysed using EDS-SEM. Comparing the results from the analytical survey, important information about the use of ochres and Egyptian blue on the cuirassed headless Emperor statue has been highlighted with the presence of gilding in the cuirasses and in the mantle, enriching the knowledge of this important imperial cycle, in addition to contributing to the archaeological point of view. Aléria was the main city of the island of Corsica in ancient times. Archaeological excavations in the area where ancient Aléria once stood began between the 1950s and 1960s and brought to light numerous inscriptions mainly carved on slabs of white marble; they constitute an important source of knowledge of the city's institutions, urban topography, society, and economy. The provenance of the marbles, on which the inscriptions were carved, can add important information about the history of the city. A first visual examination of the slabs or slab fragments allows us to state that Carrara is probably the provenance of most of the marbles used. Practical reasons lead us to believe that the provenance of these marbles can be traced back to two main quarry areas: Carrara, or somewhere in Corsica. The determination of the stable isotope composition of these marbles could solve this problem. Carrara marble, in fact, has a narrow range of isotopic variability, with values typical of marine carbonates, that allows for a strong characterization. The petrographic method of investigation was used, as a second step, on a reduced number of marble inscriptions to evaluate the effectiveness of the isotopic characterization of Carrara. The results of the analysis confirmed that most of the gray and white marbles studied have Carrara as their quarrying area; they also revealed that in Corsica the presence of ancient local marble quarries is uncertain, even in Roman times. The present work evaluated the influence of eight different soil remediation techniques, based on the use of residual materials (gypsum, marble, vermicompost) on the reduction in metal(loid)s toxicity (Cu, Zn, As, Pb and Cd) in a polluted natural area. Selected remediation treatments were applied in a field exposed to real conditions and they were evaluated one year after the application. More specifically, five ecotoxicological tests were carried out using different organisms on either the solid or the aqueous (leachate) fraction of the amended soils. Likewise, the main soil properties and the total, water-soluble and bioavailable metal fractions were determined to evaluate their influence on soil toxicity. According to the toxicity bioassays performed, the response of organisms to the treatments differed depending on whether the solid or the aqueous fraction was used. Our results highlighted that the use of a single bioassay may not be sufficient as an indicator of toxicity pathways to select soil remediation methods, so that the joint determination of metal availability and ecotoxicological response will be determinant for the correct establishment of any remediation technique carried out under natural conditions. Our results indicated that, of the different treatments used, the best technique for the remediation of metal(loid)s toxicity was the addition of marble sludge with vermicompost. A large amount of industrial solid waste is generated from industrial activities worldwide. One such waste is marble waste, a waste generated from quarries which is generated in larger amount which needs attention. It is proved that this waste has a significant impact both on the people health and on the environment. Hence, research works are directed towards addressing usage of waste marble power, the aim of this experimental investigation is to study the usability of sand obtained by crushing marble waste (MWS) on the mixing of lightweight concrete based on expanded perlite aggregate (EPA). First, the mechanical, chemical, and physical properties of marble waste sand and expanded perlite aggregate were determined after which different mixtures of concrete are prepared by varying the percentage of EPA (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%), in order to find the optimum mixture focussing on obtaining best hydraulic properties. Also, in this work, the thermal and acoustic properties (thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity and sound reduction index at different frequencies) of the tested concrete samples were investigated. Results shows that it is possible to obtain thermal and acoustic insulation lightweight concrete by using sand obtained by crushing marble wastes. Also, addition of more than 20% of EPA aggregate in concrete, develops a thermal insulating lightweight concrete which possess capacity to store heat and produce better thermal performance. Concrete blend with a percentage of more than of 20% of EPA aggregate can be placed in the category of acoustic insulation lightweight concrete. In summary, cement based on MWs and EPA provides better workability and energy saving qualities, which are economical and environmentally beneficial and may result in decreased construction budget and improve a long-term raw materials sustainability. The preparation of continuous hydroxyapatite film on stone is a promising method of protecting marble from erosion. However, many methods negatively affect the calcium in the substrate and forming of struvite on the dolomite surface, leading to a heterogeneous coating and low efficiency. In this study, a continuous hydroxyapatite coating on dolomitic marble was achieved from graphene enhanced Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles as the calcium precursor using the sol-gel method. The morphology and the structure of the film was evaluated by a field emission scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), an optical microscope, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and analytical techniques. Moreover, the color and the contact angle measurements, as well as the simulated acid rain test and freeze–thaw treatment, were performed to assess the chromatic aberration, hydrophilicity, reliability, and durability of the coating. A suppositional combination model among hydroxyapatite, graphene quantum dots, and dolomite were suggested based on structural similarities between the support material and components of the functional coating. This paper examines eight marble samples from the architectural elements and liturgical furniture of the ecclesiastical complex of Santa Giustina in Padova (Italy), founded by the Rufus Venantius Opilio before AD 524. The provenance determination of the marbles was carried out by means of a multi-analytical approach combining mineralogical–petrographic investigations, performed by microscopic observations of thin sections, and the measurement of the ratios of stable carbon and oxygen isotopes. The results obtained were compared with up-to-date petrographic and isotopic databases (Antonelli and Lazzarini 2015), and they showed that the analyzed marbles come from the quarries of the island of Proconnesus in Asia Minor, modern Marmara Adası (Turkey). Archaeometric evidence, together with the stylistic and functional analysis of the pieces, suggests the direct importation of a complete set of sculptures, shipped at different stages of workmanship from the workshops of Constantinople and expressly ordered by a single patron, who can be identified as Opilio, founder of the basilica of Santa Giustina and praetorian prefect at the court of King Theodoric. This paper presents the results of the characterisation, identification, provenance determination, and quantification of the white, greco scritto-like and polychrome marbles used for architectural purposes at Forum Sempronii, a Roman town in the Marche region of Italy. Samples of five fragments of white marble and one fragment of a greco scritto-like marble have been studied using mineralogical and petrographic observations and stable isotope ratio analysis (SIRA) of carbon and oxygen. Polychrome marbles were macroscopically identified by comparison with reference samples and available image databases. Analytical results of the white and greco scritto-like marbles identified the material as coming from the quarries of Carrara (Luni, Italy) and Proconnesos (Marmara, Saraylar, Turkey) for white marble, and of Ephesos-Hasançavuslar for greco scritto-like marble. Further, at least eleven imported polychrome stone varieties were distinguished. The study clearly illustrates that Forum Sempronii had access to the main marble trade networks of the Roman Mediterranean. The early attestation of Proconnesian marble at the town's augusteum (i.e., Augustan date) is unique for central Adriatic Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the increasing requirements for the exploitation of underground resources, the subject of the physical and mechanical properties of rocks under high temperature and pressure needs to be studied urgently. In order to analyze the mechanical and energy characteristics of rocks under different thermal damages and confining pressures (c), a triaxial compression test is performed on 35 marble samples. The effects of thermal damage and high pressure are simulated with different thermal cycles and confining pressures. The results show that as the number of thermal cycles increases, the peak strain of marble gradually rises, but the peak stress and the elastic modulus (E) decrease by a degree, reaching 11.19‰, 39.53 MPa, 4.79 GPa, while there is no confining pressure applied at eight thermal cycles. At this point, the failure mode gradually changes from brittle fracture to plastic failure. When confining pressure rises, peak stress, peak strain, and elastic modulus all show an upward trend, reaching a maximum of 189.45 MPa, 13.39‰, 35.41 GPa, while the sample is undamaged at 30 MPa confining pressure. Moreover, peak stress increases linearly with confining pressure increase. The increased rate of the peak value of the total absorbed energy, elastic strain energy, and dissipated energy all show a convex trend. The dissipated energy gradually increases with the axial strain (ε1) during the rock loading process. The elastic strain energy has an energy storage limit, but the rock fails when the value exceeds the limit. The limit increases first and then decreases with the number of thermal cycles. Nondestructive tests, commonly employed in rock mechanics, estimate mechanical parameters without affecting the rocks in situ properties. This study evaluates non-destructive tests (ultrasonic pulse velocity and Schmidt hammer) for forecasting the strength and physical properties of commonly used rocks. Weathering grades and moisture content are provided as variables that produce variances in both non-destructive tests. The coefficient of determination (R²) and subsequent empirical equations for the best-fit trend line are calculated using a simple regression method. The ultrasonic pulse velocity is found to be more efficient in estimating most of the physical properties (specific gravity, porosity, water absorption, and dry density) of granite, marble, and sandstone, with high correlation coefficients. Whereas the Schmidt hammer is found to be more reproducible in determining the strength (compressive and tensile) of granite, marble, and sandstone. The student's t-test proved the sensitivity and correctness of the acquired equations from the suggested correlations, and agreement was established between measured and estimated plots of strength and physical properties. Although the student's t-test confirms that the performance of all empirical models established in this study are significant, any non-destructive test with a low R² value should be used with caution when estimating the studied properties. The study of the provenance of dolomitic marble artefacts has become relevant since it was discovered that quarries of this marble other than that of Cape-Vathy located on the island of Thasos have been exploited since Antiquity. To improve our knowledge about the provenance of materials and the extent of their dispersion, multiple archaeometric studies were performed in the past including isotope analyses, petrography, cathodoluminescence, and elemental analyses. In the present work, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been added to this panel of techniques. NMR allows the characterization of the material at a molecular level by looking at different nuclei: carbon, magnesium, and calcium. Statistical analysis of the data collected on both quarry samples and archaeologic items was also implemented and clearly demonstrates the efficiency of a holistic approach for provenance elucidation. Finally, the first 25Mg NMR tests have shown the potential of this technique to discriminate between dolomitic marbles of different provenance. The results are discussed in terms of their historical meaning and illustrate the exploitation of sources of dolomitic marbles other than the Greek Thasos source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many museums have been producing reproductions for several years to replace artworks weakened by outdoor exhibition. Among these, in order to imitate the original aesthetic, the French consortium Réunion des Musées Nationaux–Grand Palais has chosen to work from large-format marble sculpture molds to complex composite materials based on resins comprising mineral fillers. However, similar to the original works of art, these reproductions age and deteriorate due to constant outdoor exposure. For this reason, current research focuses on the preventive conservation and monitoring of the structural health of these reconstructed objects. The goal of this paper was to study the resin/mineral powder composite materials used to produce cultural heritage reproductions of sculptures. This work is oriented toward a comparison of the mechanical properties of composite materials used in the replacement of cultural heritage sculptures (for instance, in the Garden of the Palace of Versailles or the Rodin Museum). The objectives were to first characterize the physical and mechanical properties of these materials in order to identify the most suitable material for cultural heritage reproduction, and secondly, to propose a method with minimal contact that obtained equivalent information as analyses performed with conventional ultrasonic techniques. These nondestructive evaluation techniques could be used for laboratory and in situ analyses. Samples of different polymer/mineral powder filler compositions were analyzed by compressional, shear and surface waves, generated by a 1 MHz center frequency ultrasonic transducer. Firstly, the measurements made it possible to evaluate the velocities of the bulk acoustic waves and extract the Young's modulus of each tested material. Secondly, in order to have minimal contact with the analyzed structure, a laser interferometry system was used to detect waves at the surface and follow their propagation. The results clearly showed the possibility of using this technique to extract mechanical characteristics of composite materials, allowing for selection of material for the reproduction of large-format statues. For different types of polymer resins, the ability of ultrasonic analysis to track the impact of rock powder (marble or slate) on the mechanical properties of these synthetic materials was clearly observed, proving that this technique holds promise for monitoring the structural health of large-format artwork. With changes in mining depth, the dynamic mechanical characteristics of the same type of rock also change, so that the blasting excavation process must be constantly adjusted and optimized to meet the requirements of safe and efficient mining. To study the energy evolution law and fractal characteristics of deep marble during the destruction process, dynamic impact tests under different strain rates were carried out on a deep marble sample using the three-axis dynamic combination Hopkinson pressure bar system. The experimental results show that the larger the incident energy is, the more energy is transmitted. The proportion of absorbed energy does not increase with the increase in the incident energy. Only 30%–38% of the incident energy is absorbed by the impacted rock. With an increase in the strain rate, the energy consumption density gradually increases, the fragmentation degree is intensified, the fractal dimension gradually increases, and the failure mode changes from compression–shear failure to crushing failure. Various marbles from historic quarries of the Czech Republic were examined by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy (quantitative data) to determine the possible inclusion of the method in marble provenance studies. The methodology used was based on a combination of electron microprobe analysis (Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn composition) and CL spectroscopy (intensity) of calcite and dolomite grains of the marbles studied. Several statistical techniques were applied to the CL-spectra to find the most effective way of characterization of the CL-spectra for provenance discrimination. The combination of Mg-admixture of calcite and position of the maximum (i.e., centre) of a single Gaussian curve was revealed to be the most discriminative dependence of the marbles studied. The modernization of human civilization has led to the prospect of better and more durable building materials. Marble, found in various colors and textures, has been used as a building stone for centuries, either as cut stone or polished stone. The present study evaluated the petrological, geochemical, and geotechnical characterizations of the Gahirat Marble formation as a building stone. It is exposed over an area of 160 square kilometers in southwestern Chitral. The Gahirat Marble formation has been divided into two parts, i.e., the eastern and western parts. The eastern part is a coarse crystalline rock that exhibits a granulose structure and was subjected to amphibolite facies metamorphism, whereas its western part is a coarse-to-medium crystalline rock that displays a differential granulose structure and was subjected to green schist facies metamorphism. Petrographically, it is composed mainly of calcite (>92%) with minute quartz, chlorite, muscovite, biotite, garnet, and opaque minerals. The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique was used to analyze the chemical composition of the Gahirat Marble showing that it is a pure calciocarbonate marble (CaO: 53.16–55.02 wt.%). The specific gravity measured varies from 2.46–2.71 gm/cm3, water absorption is <0.2%, sulfate soundness is <0.65, and due to its unconfined compressive strength, it is classified as strong rock, thus conforming to ASTM C503 specifications. The results acquired from the investigated samples suggest they are suitable as dimension stones. Until now, it has been limitedly mined and marketed but can be further exploited for export trade, based upon its petrographic, geotechnical, and geochemical characterization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
