The triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has demonstrated exceptional efficiency in harvesting diverse forms of mechanical energy and converting it into electrical energy. This technology is particularly valuable for powering low-energy electronic devices and self-powered sensors. Most traditional TENGs use single-sided patterned friction pairs, which restrict their effective contact area and overall performance. Here, we propose a novel TENG that incorporates microwave patterned aluminum (MC-Al) foil and microcone structured polydimethylsiloxane (MC-PDMS). This innovative design utilizes two PMMA molds featuring identical micro-hole arrays ablated by a CO 2 laser, making it both cost-effective and easy to fabricate. A novel room imprinting technique has been employed to create the micromorphology of aluminum (Al) foil using the PMMA mold with shallower micro-hole arrays. Compared to TENGs with flat friction layers and single-side-patterned friction layers, the double-side-patterned MW-MC-TENG demonstrates superior output performance due to increased cone deformation and contact area. The open-circuit voltage of the MW-MC-TENG can reach 141 V, while the short-circuit current can attain 71.5 μA, corresponding to a current density of 2.86 µA/cm 2 . The power density reaches 1.4 mW/cm 2 when the resistance is 15 MΩ, and it can charge a 0.1 μF capacitor to 2.01 V in 2.28 s. In addition, the MW-MC-TENG can function as an insole device to harvest walking energy, power 11 LED bulbs, monitor step speed, and power a timer device. Therefore, the MW-MC-TENG has significant application potential in micro-wearable devices.

Sustainable and safe food is an important issue worldwide, and it depends on cost-effective analysis tools with good sensitivity and reality. However, traditional standard chemical methods of food safety detection, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), and tandem mass spectrometry (MS), have the disadvantages of high cost and long testing time. Those disadvantages have prevented people from obtaining sufficient risk information to confirm the safety of their products. In addition, food safety testing, such as the bioassay method, often results in false positives or false negatives due to little rigor preprocessing of samples. So far, food safety analysis currently relies on the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), HPLC, GC, UV-visible spectrophotometry, and MS, all of which require significant time to train qualified food safety testing laboratory operators. These factors have hindered the development of rapid food safety monitoring systems, especially in remote areas or areas with a relative lack of testing resources. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as one of the tools of choice for food safety testing that can overcome these dilemmas over the past decades. SERS offers advantages over chromatographic mass spectrometry analysis due to its portability, non-destructive nature, and lower cost implications. However, as it currently stands, Raman spectroscopy is a supplemental tool in chemical analysis, reinforcing and enhancing the completeness and coverage of the food safety analysis system. SERS combines portability with non-destructive and cheaper detection costs to gain an advantage over chromatographic mass spectrometry analysis. SERS has encountered many challenges in moving toward regulatory applications in food safety, such as quantitative accuracy, poor reproducibility, and instability of large molecule detection. As a result, the reality of SERS, as a screening tool for regulatory announcements worldwide, is still uncommon. In this review article, we have compiled the current designs and fabrications of SERS substrates for food safety detection to unify all the requirements and the opportunities to overcome these challenges. This review is expected to improve the interest in the sensing field of SERS and facilitate the SERS applications in food safety detection in the future.

The SnS/SnS 2 heterostructure was fabricated by the chemical vapor deposition method. The crystal structure properties of SnS 2 and SnS were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Raman spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The frequency dependence photoconductivity explores its carrier kinetic decay process. The SnS/SnS 2 heterostructure shows that the ratio of short time constant decay process reaches 0.729 with a time constant of 4.3 × 10 -4 s. The power-dependent photoresponsivity investigates the mechanism of electron-hole pair recombination. The results indicate that the photoresponsivity of the SnS/SnS 2 heterostructure has been increased to 7.31 × 10 -3 A/W, representing a significant enhancement of approximately 7 times that of the individual films. The results show the optical response speed has been improved by using the SnS/SnS 2 heterostructure. These results indicate an application potential of the layered SnS/SnS 2 heterostructure for photodetection. This research provides valuable insights into the preparation of the heterostructure composed of SnS and SnS 2 , and presents an approach for designing high-performance photodetection devices.

Current literature has indicated that Peyronie's disease (PD) could be initiated by microtrauma and the subsequent inflammation episodes that follow. PD could be sorted into acute or chronic status, and it can differ when selecting the clinical therapeutics. PD would cause pain and penile deformity to diseased men and impair their erectile function. Occasionally, surgical revision of the penis might be needed to correct the penile curvature. We find that there are limited effective options of intra-lesion injections for the PD plaques. By searching the databases and screening the literature with the PRISMA 2020 guideline, we observed that several preclinical studies that applied stem cell therapy in treating PD were fruitful in the acute phase. Although in the chronic phase of PD, erectile parameters were not significantly improved, and therefore, future studies might be better elevated in certain aspects, such as the sites selected for harvesting stem cells or changing the centrifugation forces. In this review, we concluded the contemporary understanding of inflammatory microenvironments in PD, the stem cell therapy in PD, and our perspectives on future studies. In this study, we present the investigation of optical properties on a series of HfS 2-x Se x crystals with different Se compositions x changing from 0 to 2. We used the chemical-vapor transport method to grow these layered ternary compound semiconductors in bulk form. Their lattice constants and crystal properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. We have performed absorption spectroscopies to determine their optical band-gap energies, which started from 2.012 eV with x = 0, and gradually shifts to 1.219 eV for x = 2. Furthermore, we measured the absorption spectroscopies at different temperatures in the range of 20-300 K to identify the temperature dependence of band-gap energies. The band-gap energies of HfS 2-x Se x were determined from the linear extrapolation method. We have noticed that the band-gap energy may be continuously tuned to the required energy by manipulating the ratio of S and Se. The parameters that describe the temperature influence on the band-gap energy are evaluated and discussed.

Doping plays a vital role in the application of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) because it can increase the functionality of TMDCs by tuning their native characteristics. In this study, the influence of Mn, Fe, Co, and Cu doping on the photoelectric properties of HfS 2 was investigated. Pristine, Mn-, Fe-, Co-, and Cu-doped HfS 2 crystals were grown using the chemical vapor transport method. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the crystals were layered and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy measurements confirmed that the crystals were in the 1T-phase with a CdI 2 -like structure. The bandgap of pristine HfS 2 obtained from the absorption and photoconductivity spectra was approximately 1.99 eV. As the dopant changed from Mn, Fe, and Co, to Cu, the bandgap gradually increased. The activation energies of the samples were determined using temperature-dependent current-voltage curves. After doping, the activation energy decreased, and the Co-doped HfS 2 exhibited the smallest activation energy. Time-resolved photoresponse measurements showed that doping improved the response of HfS 2 to light; the Co-doped HfS 2 exhibited the best response. The photoresponsivity of HfS 2 as a function of the laser power and bias voltage was measured. After doping, the photoresponsivity increased markedly; the Co-doped HfS 2 exhibited the highest photoresponsivity. All the experimental results indicated that doping with Mn, Fe, Co, and Cu significantly improved the photoresponsive performance of HfS 2 , of which Co-doped HfS 2 had the best performance.

In this study, a series of SnS 2-x Se x (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) layered semiconductors were grown by the chemical-vapor transport method. The crystal structural and material phase of SnS 2-x Se x layered van der Waals crystals was characterized by X-ray diffraction measurements and Raman spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of the spectral features in the vicinity of the direct band edge excitonic transitions of the layered SnS 2-x Se x compounds was measured in the temperature range of 20-300 K using the piezoreflectance (PzR) technique. The near band-edge excitonic transition energies of SnS 2-x Se x were determined from a detailed line-shape fit of the PzR spectra. The PzR characterization has shown that the excitonic transitions were continuously tunable with the ratio of S and Se. The parameters that describe the temperature variation of the energies of the excitonic transitions are evaluated and discussed.

Intervertebral fusion surgery for spinal trauma, degeneration, and deformity correction is a major vertebral reconstruction operation. For most cages, the stiffness of the cage is high enough to cause stress concentration, leading to a stress shielding effect between the vertebral bones and the cages. The stress shielding effect affects the outcome after the reconstruction surgery, easily causing damage and leading to a higher risk of reoperation. A porous structure for the spinal fusion cage can effectively reduce the stiffness to obtain more comparative strength for the surrounding tissue. In this study, an intervertebral cage with a porous gradation structure was designed for Ti64ELI alloy powders bonded by the selective laser melting (SLM) process. The medical imaging software InVesalius and 3D surface reconstruction software Geomagic Studio 12 (Raindrop Geomagic Inc., Morrisville, NC, USA) were utilized to establish the vertebra model, and ANSYS Workbench 16 (Ansys Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA) simulation software was used to simulate the stress and strain of the motions including vertical body-weighted compression, flexion, extension, lateral bending, and rotation. The intervertebral cage with a hollow cylinder had porosity values of 80-70-60-70-80% (from center to both top side and bottom side) and had porosity values of 60-70-80 (from outside to inside). In addition, according to the contact areas between the vertebras and cages, the shape of the cages can be custom-designed. The cages underwent fatigue tests by following ASTM F2077-17. Then, mechanical property simulations of the cages were conducted for a comparison with the commercially available cages from three companies: Zimmer (Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc., Warsaw, IN, USA), Ulrich (Germany), and B. Braun (Germany). The results show that the stress and strain distribution of the cages are consistent with the ones of human bone, and show a uniform stress distribution, which can reduce stress concentration.

In this study, 22Cr25NiWCuCo(Nb) heat-resistant steel specimens with high Cr and Ni contents were adopted to investigate the effect of Nb content on thermal and precipitation behavior. Differential scanning calorimetry profiles revealed that the melting point of the 22Cr25NiWCuCo(Nb) steel specimens decreased slightly with the Nb content. After heat treatment at 1200 °C for 2 h, the precipitates dissolved in a Nb-free steel matrix. In addition, the Z phase (CrNb(C, N)) and MX (Nb(C, N), (Cr, Fe)(C, N), and NbC) could be observed in the Nb-containing steel specimens. The amount and volume fraction of the precipitates increased with the Nb content, and the precipitates were distributed heterogeneously along the grain boundary and inside the grain. Even when the heat treatment duration was extended to 6 h, the austenitic grain size and precipitates became coarser; the volume fraction of the precipitates also increased at 1200 °C. The Z phase, rather than the MX phase, became the dominant precipitates at this temperature.

Human high-mobility group A2 (HMGA2) encodes for a non-histone chromatin protein which influences a variety of biological processes, including the cell cycle process, apoptosis, the DNA damage repair process, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. The accumulated evidence suggests that high expression of HMGA2 is related to tumor progression, poor prognosis, and a poor response to therapy. Thus, HMGA2 is an important molecular target for many types of malignancies. Our recent studies revealed the positive connections between heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) and HMGA2 and that the Hsp90 inhibitor has therapeutic potential to inhibit HMGA2-triggered tumorigenesis. However, 43% of patients suffered visual disturbances in a phase I trial of the second-generation Hsp90 inhibitor, NVP-AUY922. To identify a specific inhibitor to target HMGA2, the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and the Library of Integrated Network-based Cellular Signatures (LINCS) L1000platform were both analyzed. We identified the approved small-molecule antifungal agent ciclopirox (CPX) as a novel potential inhibitor of HMGA2. In addition, CPX induces cytotoxicity of colorectal cancer (CRC) cells by induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in vitro and in vivo through direct interaction with the AT-hook motif (a small DNA-binding protein motif) of HMGA2. In conclusion, this study is the first to report that CPX is a novel potential inhibitor of HMGA2 using a drug-repurposing approach, which can provide a potential therapeutic intervention in CRC patients.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a heterogeneous disease resulting from the combined influence of many genetic factors. This complexity has caused the molecular characterization of CRC to remain uncharacterized, with a lack of clear gene markers associated with CRC and the prognosis of this disease. Thus, highly sensitive tumor markers for the detection of CRC are the most essential determinants of survival. In this study, we examined the simultaneous downregulation of the mRNA levels of six metallothionein (MT) genes in CRC cell lines and public CRC datasets for the first time. In addition, we detected downregulation of these six MT mRNAs' levels in 30 pairs of tumor (T) and adjacent non-tumor (N) CRC specimens. In order to understand the potential prognostic relevance of these six MT genes and CRC, we presented a four-gene signature to evaluate the prognosis of CRC patients. Further discovery suggested that the four-gene signature ( MT1F , MT1G , MT1L , and MT1X ) predicted survival better than any combination of two-, three-, four-, five-, or six-gene models. In conclusion, this study is the first to report that simultaneous downregulation of six MT mRNAs' levels in CRC patients, and their aberrant expression together, accurately predicted CRC patients' outcomes.

The main causes of dysfunction after a spinal cord injury (SCI) include primary and secondary injuries that occur during the first minutes, hours, to days after injury. This treatable secondary cascade provides a window of opportunity for delivering therapeutic interventions. An S/B remedy ( Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and Bupleurum scorzonerifolfium Willd) has anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, and anticarcinogenic effects in liver or neurodegenerative diseases. The present work examined the effect of S/B on injured spinal cord neurons in cultures and in vivo. S/B effectively reduced peroxide toxicity and lipopolysaccharide stimulation in both spinal cord neuron/glial and microglial cultures with the involvement of PKC and HSP70. The effect of S/B was further conducted in contusive SCI rats. Intraperitoneal injections of S/B to SCI rats preserved spinal cord tissues and effectively attenuated microglial activation. Consistently, S/B treatment significantly improved hindlimb functions of SCI rats. In the acute stage of injury, S/B treatment markedly reduced the levels of ED1 expression and lactate and had a tendency to decrease lipid peroxidation. Taken together, we demonstrated long-term hindlimb restoration alongside histological improvements with systemic S/B remedy treatment in a clinically relevant model of contusive SCI. Our findings highlight the potential of an S/B remedy for acute therapeutic intervention after SCI.

Acrylamide (AA) and glycidamide (GA) can be produced in carbohydrate-rich food when heated at a high temperature, which can induce a malignant transformation. It has been demonstrated that GA is more mutagenic than AA. It has been shown that the proliferation rate of some cancer cells are increased by treatment with GA; however, the exact genes that are induced by GA in most cancer cells are not clear. In the present study, we demonstrated that GA promotes the growth of prostate cancer cells through induced protein expression of the cell cycle regulator. In addition, we also found that GA promoted the migratory ability of prostate cancer cells through induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-associated protein expression. In order to understand the potential prognostic relevance of GA-mediated regulators of the cell cycle and EMT, we present a three-gene signature to evaluate the prognosis of prostate cancer patients. Further investigations suggested that the three-gene signature (CDK4, TWIST1 and SNAI2) predicted the chances of survival better than any of the three genes alone for the first time. In conclusion, we suggested that the three-gene signature model can act as marker of GA exposure. The optical properties of WSe₂-layered crystals doped with 0.5% niobium (Nb) grown by the chemical vapor transport method were characterized by piezoreflectance (PzR), photoconductivity (PC) spectroscopy, frequency-dependent photocurrent, and time-resolved photoresponse. With the incorporation of 0.5% Nb, the WSe₂ crystal showed slight blue shifts in the near band edge excitonic transitions and exhibited strongly enhanced photoresponsivity. Frequency-dependent photocurrent and time-resolved photoresponse were measured to explore the kinetic decay processes of carriers. Our results show the potential application of layered crystals for photodetection devices based on Nb-doped WSe₂-layered crystals.

Our goal was to determine dioxin levels in 800 soil samples collected from Taiwan. An in vitro DR-CALUX® assay was carried out with the help of an automated Soxhlet system and fast cleanup column. The mean dioxin level of 800 soil samples was 36.0 pg-bioanalytical equivalents (BEQs)/g dry weight (d.w.). Soil dioxin-BEQs were higher in northern Taiwan (61.8 pg-BEQ/g d.w.) than in central, southern, and eastern Taiwan (22.2, 24.9, and 7.80 pg-BEQ/g d.w., respectively). Analysis of multiple linear regression models identified four major predictors of dioxin-BEQs including soil sampling location (β = 0.097, p < 0.001), land use (β = 0.065, p < 0.001), soil brightness (β = 0.170, p < 0.001), and soil moisture (β = 0.051, p = 0.020), with adjusted R2 = 0.947 (p < 0.001) (n = 662). An univariate logistic regression analysis with the cut-off point of 33.4 pg-BEQ/g d.w. showed significant odds ratios (ORs) for soil sampling location (OR = 2.43, p < 0.001), land use (OR = 1.47, p < 0.001), and soil brightness (OR = 2.83, p = 0.009). In conclusion, four variables, including soil sampling location, land use, soil brightness, and soil moisture, may be related to soil-dioxin contamination. Soil samples collected in northern Taiwan, and especially in Bade City, soils near industrial areas, and soils with darker color may contain higher dioxin-BEQ levels.
