Dementia, a multifaceted neurological syndrome characterized by cognitive decline, poses significant challenges to daily functioning. The main causes of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Lewy body dementia (LBD), and vascular dementia (VD), have different symptoms and etiologies. Genetic regulators, specifically non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) such as microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs), are known to play important roles in dementia pathogenesis. MiRNAs, small non-coding RNAs, regulate gene expression by binding to the 3′ untranslated regions of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), while lncRNAs and circRNAs act as molecular sponges for miRNAs, thereby regulating gene expression. The emerging concept of competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) interactions, involving lncRNAs and circRNAs as competitors for miRNA binding, has gained attention as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in dementia-related disorders. This review explores the regulatory roles of ncRNAs, particularly miRNAs, and the intricate dynamics of ceRNA interactions, providing insights into dementia pathogenesis and potential therapeutic avenues. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent cancer to be diagnosed, and it has a substantial mortality rate. Despite numerous studies being conducted on CRC, it remains a significant health concern. The disease-free survival rates notably decrease as CRC progresses, emphasizing the urgency for effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. CRC development is caused by environmental factors, which mostly lead to the disruption of signaling pathways. Among these pathways, the Wingless/Integrated (Wnt) signaling pathway, Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/AKT/mTOR) signaling pathway, Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathway, and p53 signaling pathway are considered to be important. These signaling pathways are also regulated by non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), including microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs). They have emerged as crucial regulators of gene expression in CRC by changing their expression levels. The altered expression patterns of these ncRNAs have been implicated in CRC progression and development, suggesting their potential as diagnostic and therapeutic targets. This review provides an overview of the five key signaling pathways and regulation of ncRNAs involved in CRC pathogenesis that are studied to identify promising avenues for diagnosis and treatment strategies. Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA entities that can move within the host genome. Over long periods of evolutionary time, TEs are typically silenced via the accumulation of mutations in the genome, ultimately resulting in their immobilization. However, they still play an important role in the host genome by acting as regulatory elements. They influence host transcription in various ways, one of which as the origin of the generation of microRNAs (miRNAs), which are so-called miRNAs derived from TEs (MDTEs). miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that are involved in many biological processes by regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. Here, we identified MDTEs in the Macaca mulatta (rhesus monkey) genome, which is phylogenetically close species to humans, based on the genome coordinates of miRNAs and TEs. The expression of 5 out of 17 MDTEs that were exclusively registered in M. mulatta from the miRBase database (v22) was examined via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Although most human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) have been silenced and lost their ability to translocate because of accumulated mutations during evolution, they still play important roles in human biology. Several studies have demonstrated that HERVs play pathological roles in numerous human diseases, especially cancer. A few studies have revealed that long non-coding RNAs that are transcribed from HERV sequences affect cancer progression. However, there is no study on microRNAs derived from HERVs related to cancer. In this study, we identified 29 microRNAs (miRNAs) derived from HERV sequences in the human genome. In particular, we discovered that miR-4454, which is HERV-H-derived miRNA, was upregulated in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) cells. To figure out the effects of upregulated miR-4454 in NMIBC, genes whose expression was downregulated in NMIBC, as well as tumor suppressor genes, were selected as putative target genes of miR-4454. The dual-luciferase assay was used to determine the negative relationship between miR-4454 and its target genes, DNAJB4 and SASH1, and they were confirmed to be promising target genes of miR-4454. Taken together, this study suggests that the upregulation of miR-4454 derived from HERV-H in NMIBC reduces the expression of the tumor suppressor genes, DNAJB4 and SASH1, to promote NMIBC progression. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of endogenous RNAs that control gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Recent studies have increasingly demonstrated that circRNAs act as novel diagnostic biomarkers and promising therapeutic targets for numerous cancer types by interacting with other non-coding RNAs such as microRNAs (miRNAs). The miRNAs are presented as crucial risk factors and regulatory elements in cancer by regulating the expression of their target genes. Some miRNAs are derived from transposable elements (MDTEs) that can transfer their location to another region of the genome. Genetic interactions between miRNAs and circular RNAs can form complex regulatory networks with various carcinogenic processes that play critical roles in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. This review focuses on the biological regulation of the correlative axis among circular RNAs, miRNAs, and their target genes in various cancer types and suggests the biological importance of MDTEs interacting with oncogenic or tumor-suppressive circRNAs in tumor progression. Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilium, BF) is a widely consumed vegetable. It has the potential to be manufactured as a ready-to-eat (RTE) product as a cooking ingredient and a side dish. The aim of the current study was to develop sterilized BF RTE products and to investigate textural qualities depending on the size of the pouches. The F0-value at the cold point according to pouch size (100, 150, and 200 g) targeted at 15 min was determined through heat transfer simulation using the calibrated heat transfer coefficient. The location of the cold points in the stand-up pouches was moved upward from the bottom of the pouch by increasing the pouch size. The sterilization time for 100, 150, and 200 g was evaluated as 35.0, 41.5, and 47.5 min, respectively. The textural properties measured using the cutting test showed significant differences according to the location in the pouch. The textural degradation of BF in the top part of the pouch was more extensive than that at the bottom due to the smaller dimensions. In addition, the percentage of textural degradation in the top part increased with increasing pouch sizes. The methods introduced in this study can be applied to validate the degree of sterilization and the texture of various stalk vegetables used for ready-to-eat products packed in stand-up pouches. Thermal processing of white radish using retort sterilization at different temperatures was investigated according to the dimension of the package. Four different samples with the same weight and volume were placed in packages with different dimensions. The degree of sterilization (i.e., F0-value) at the cold point targeted at 6 min was determined based on experimental data and heat transfer simulation. The sterilization time was considerably increased with a decrease in surface area to unit volume ratio (φ) at each temperature. The sterilization time for the sample with the highest φ (155.56) was approximately five times faster than the sample with the lowest φ (72.22) at all heating temperatures. Numerical simulation conducted with a proper heat transfer coefficient (h) showed mostly good agreement with the experimental data (RMSE < 2 °C). Changes in color and total phenolic content were higher for samples heated at higher temperatures. Hardness values of white radish samples measured for center and edge parts separately were more uniform for samples with a high φ. Results in this study suggest that optimizing heating conditions of root vegetables must consider their package dimensions to satisfy quality attributes after sterilization. Alternative splicing of messenger RNA (mRNA) precursors contributes to genetic diversity by generating structurally and functionally distinct transcripts. In a disease state, alternative splicing promotes incidence and development of several cancer types through regulation of cancer-related biological processes. Transposable elements (TEs), having the genetic ability to jump to other regions of the genome, can bring about alternative splicing events in cancer. TEs can integrate into the genome, mostly in the intronic regions, and induce cancer-specific alternative splicing by adjusting various mechanisms, such as exonization, providing splicing donor/acceptor sites, alternative regulatory sequences or stop codons, and driving exon disruption or epigenetic regulation. Moreover, TEs can produce microRNAs (miRNAs) that control the proportion of transcripts by repressing translation or stimulating the degradation of transcripts at the post-transcriptional level. Notably, TE insertion creates a cancer-friendly environment by controlling the overall process of gene expression before and after transcription in cancer cells. This review emphasizes the correlative interaction between alternative splicing by TE integration and cancer-associated biological processes, suggesting a macroscopic mechanism controlling alternative splicing by TE insertion in cancer. It is estimated that up to 80% of the human genome is transcribed into RNA molecules but less than 2% of the genome encodes the proteins, and the rest of the RNA transcripts that are not translated into protein are called non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). Many studies have revealed that ncRNAs have biochemical activities as epigenetic regulators at the post-transcriptional level. Growing evidence has demonstrated that transposable elements (TEs) contribute to a large percentage of ncRNAs' transcription. The TEs inserted into certain parts of the genome can act as alternative promoters, enhancers, and insulators, and the accumulation of TEs increases genetic diversity in the human genome. The TEs can also generate microRNAs, so-called miRNA-derived from transposable elements (MDTEs), and are also implicated in disease progression, such as infectious diseases and cancer. We investigated the possible intake of toxic cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa) as a nutrient resource for a filter-feeder bivalve (Unio douglasiae) based on the measurement of feeding and assimilation rates of carbon and nitrogen in a limited space with no current for 72 h using 13C and 15N dual isotope tracers. With high clearance rates, the unionid rapidly removed Microcystis cells within 24 h, but only a small amount of carbon and nitrogen were incorporated into the tissues. Even with the low assimilation rates, the mussels showed more favorable uptake of carbon than of nitrogen from toxic Microcystis water, and of tissues, the gills and gut accumulated more carbon and nitrogen than the muscle and mantle. Collectively, our findings indicate that although Unio douglasiae effectively uptake toxic Microcystis cells, they can assimilate only low amounts of nutrients into tissues within three days, despite a non-flowing system. Featured Application: The frequency analysis could identify the sound effects on postural sway in dual-tasking. Older adults prioritize the vestibular regulation for postural control when performing a hand task in standing. Sound and sound frequency could improve postural sway in the elderly. The power spectrum intervals of the center of pressure (COP) displacement are associated with different postural regulations, which could be revealed by frequency analysis. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of sound on dual-tasking postural control and conduct frequency analysis to distinguish postural regulations in the elderly. Fifteen young and 15 older healthy participants were instructed to stand on a force platform and performed the Purdue Pegboard test while hearing 50 dB sounds with sound frequencies of 250 Hz, 1000 Hz, 4000 Hz, or no sound. The total excursion, velocity, sway area, and power spectrum of low-, medium-, and high-frequency bands of the COP displacement were calculated in the anterior–posterior and medial–lateral directions. The percentages of low-frequency and medium-frequency bands in both directions were significantly different between with and without sound conditions, but not affected by sound frequency. Older adults showed a smaller percentage of low-frequency, larger percentage of medium-frequency, larger total COP excursion, and faster velocity in the medial–lateral direction. The outcome of the study supports the frequency analysis approach in evaluating sound effects on postural strategies in dual-tasking and reveals older adults utilize vestibular regulation as the primary postural strategy when the dual-task required visual attention. Featured Application: Prioritization of the postural component in a motor-motor task suggests future individualized exercise programs be developed with different postural control strategies in the elderly. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate postural muscle performance of older adults in response to a combination of two motor tasks perturbations. Fifteen older participants were instructed to perform a pushing task as an upper limb perturbation while standing on a fixed or sliding board as a lower limb perturbation. Postural responses were characterized by onsets and magnitudes of muscle activities as well as onsets of segment movements. The sliding board did not affect the onset timing and sequence of muscle initiations and segment movements. However, significant large muscle activities of tibialis anterior and erector spinae were observed in the sliding condition (p < 0.05). The co-contraction values of the trunk and shank segments were significantly larger in the sliding condition through the studied periods (p < 0.05). Lastly, heavy pushing weight did not change the timing, magnitude, sequence of all studied parameters. Older adults enhanced postural stability by increasing the segment stiffness then started to handle two perturbations. In conclusion, they were able to deal with a dual motor-motor task after having secured their balance but could not make corresponding adjustments to the level of the perturbation difficulty. The purpose of this study was to employ inertial measurement units (IMU) with an eye-tracking device to investigate different swing strategies between two levels of batters. The participants were 20 healthy males aged 20 to 30 years old, with ten professional and ten amateur batters. Eye gaze position, head, shoulder, trunk, and pelvis angular velocity, and ground reaction forces were recorded. The results showed that professional batters rotated segments more rhythmically and efficiently than the amateur group. Firstly, the professional group spent less time in the preparation stages. Secondly, the maximum angular velocity timing of each segment of the professional group was centralized in the swing cycle. Thirdly, the amateur group had significantly earlier gaze timing of the maximum angular velocity than the professional group. Moreover, the maximum angular velocity timing of the gaze was the earliest parameter among the five segments, and significantly earlier (at least 16.32% of cycle time) than the maximum angular velocity of the head, shoulder, trunk, and pelvis within the amateur group. Post-stroke rehabilitation often aims to increase walking speeds, as faster walking is associated with improved functional status and quality of life. However, for successful community ambulation, ability to modulate (increase and decrease) walking speeds is more important than walking continuously at constant speeds. Increasing paretic propulsive forces to increase walking speed has been extensively examined; however, little is known about the mechanics of slow walking post-stroke. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the effects of increased and decreased walking speeds on post-stroke kinetics and ankle kinematics. Fifteen individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis and 15 non-neurologically impaired controls walked over an instrumented treadmill under: slow, self-selected, and fast walking speeds. We examined the peak propulsive forces, propulsive impulse, peak braking forces, braking impulse, and ankle kinematics under each condition. When walking at slow walking speeds, paretic limbs were unable to reduce braking impulse and peak propulsive force or modulate ankle kinematics. Impaired modulation of paretic gait kinetics during slow walking places people post-stroke at high risks for slip-related falls. These findings suggest the need for developing gait retraining paradigms for slow walking in individuals chronically post-stroke that target the ability of the paretic limb to modulate braking forces. Static standing postural stability has been measured by multiscale entropy (MSE), which is used to measure complexity. In this study, we used the average entropy (AE) to measure the static standing postural stability, as AE is a good measure of disorder. The center of pressure (COP) trajectories were collected from 11 subjects under four kinds of balance conditions, from stable to unstable: bipedal with open eyes, bipedal with closed eyes, unipedal with open eyes, and unipedal with closed eyes. The AE, entropy of entropy (EoE), and MSE methods were used to analyze these COP data, and EoE was found to be a good measure of complexity. The AE of the 11 subjects sequentially increased by 100% as the balance conditions progressed from stable to unstable, but the results of EoE and MSE did not follow this trend. Therefore, AE, rather than EoE or MSE, is a good measure of static standing postural stability. Furthermore, the comparison of EoE and AE plots exhibited an inverted U curve, which is another example of a complexity versus disorder inverted U curve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
