Betaine is a useful compound that has various activities and is the marker compound of Lycium chinense fruit in Korean Pharmacopoeia. we seek to support the stable production of medicinal goji berries, which have significant potential in the pharmaceutical industry due to their high values, and to provide foundational data for consistent quality control. This study's purpose was to examine the correlation among betaine content, environmental variables, and the growth characteristics of L. chinense fruits. The fruits were collected from 25 cultivation sites across South Korea. We investigated five growth characteristics and betaine contents in L. chinense fruits and twelve soil physicochemical properties, and seven meteorological data at cultivation sites. The fruit's growth characteristics included a length of 15.62–26.49 mm, a width of 7.09–11.38 mm, a fresh weight of 0.73–1.62 g, and a sugar content of 11.10–19.62 Brix°. Its betaine content ranged from 0.54% to 0.97%. The betaine content was positively correlated with electrical conductivity (0.327 **), exchangeable potassium (0.314 **), and sodium (0.259 *) and negatively correlated with annual average minimum temperature (−0.256 *) and annual average temperature (−0.242 *). Also, betaine showed a positive correlation with the length of the fruit (0.294 *) and the fresh weight of the fruit (0.238 *). Strawberry aroma, crucial for determining quality, involves complex volatile compounds which are challenging to identify. This study explores strawberry aroma analysis using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the Automated Mass Spectral Deconvolution and Identification System (AMDIS). Central to our research is the creation of a bespoke strawberry Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) user library using AMDIS, specifically for analyzing strawberry aromas. The library contains VOCs from 61 strawberry cultivars, integrating information on 104 VOCs, including mass spectra, retention index, chemical class, CAS number, formula, odor threshold, and odor description. This custom library significantly outperformed a commercial library by reducing potential false hits by 200, decreasing the size of report files by over 96%, and, most importantly, shortening AMDIS analysis processing time from 31 s to 9 s, representing an approximate 71% reduction. Further, the study demonstrates the library's practical application by contrasting the aroma profiles of strawberries harvested in winter and spring. This comparison revealed significant VOC variations depending on seasonal temperature changes, offering insights into environmental influences on strawberry aroma. In conclusion, this research marks a significant advance in strawberry aroma quality analysis. In this paper, two orthogonally placed Vivaldi antennas with a septum-like polarizer to generate circular polarized (CP) waves are presented. Septum polarizers have garnered attention due to their simple structure and high quality of CP waves. While a typical septum polarizer has been applied to various types of waveguides, its applicability to the substrate integrated Vivaldi antenna is demonstrated here for the first time. A pulse train-shaped polarizer is used, which is placed on one of the two Vivaldi antennas. The contours of the polarizer are optimized using a genetic algorithm to provide an equal amplitude and 90° phase difference between the two orthogonal electric fields. In contrast to typical feed networks with a 90° phase shifter, any unwanted loss caused by an electronic circuit can be greatly mitigated. Glaucoma remains the primary cause of long-term blindness. While diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HTN) are known to influence glaucoma, other factors such as age and sex may be involved. In this retrospective study, we aimed to investigate the associations between age, sex, DM, HTN, and glaucoma risk. We employed optical coherence tomography (OCT) conducted using a 200 × 200-pixel optic cube (Cirrus HD OCT 6000, version 10.0; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA). Effects obscured by low-test signals were disregarded. Data were amassed from 1337 patients. Among them, 218 and 402 patients had DM and HTN, respectively, with 133 (10%) exhibiting both. A sex-based comparison revealed slightly greater retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell–inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness in females. Patients without DM and HTN were predominantly in their 50 s and 60 s, whereas DM and HTN were most prevalent in those in their 60 s and 70 s. Both RNFL and GCIPL thicknesses decreased with advancing age in most patients. The study revealed that older individuals were more prone to glaucoma than younger individuals, with a higher incidence among patients with DM and HTN and reduced RNFL and GCIPL thicknesses. Gastric cancer is the fifth most common disease in the world and the fourth most common cause of death. It is diagnosed through esophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy; however, there are limitations in finding lesions in the early stages. Recently, research has been actively conducted to use liquid biopsy to diagnose various cancers, including gastric cancer. Various substances derived from cancer are reflected in the blood. By analyzing these substances, it was expected that not only the presence or absence of cancer but also the type of cancer can be diagnosed. However, the amount of these substances is extremely small, and even these have various variables depending on the characteristics of the individual or the characteristics of the cancer. To overcome these, we collected methylated DNA fragments using MeDIP and compared them with normal plasma to characterize gastric cancer tissue or patients' plasma. We attempted to diagnose gastric cancer using the characteristics of cancer reflected in the blood through the cancer tissue and patients' plasma. As a result, we confirmed that the consistency of common methylated fragments between tissue and plasma was approximately 41.2% and we found the possibility of diagnosing and characterizing cancer using the characteristics of the fragments through SFR and 5′end-motif analysis. Saikosaponin D (SSD), derived from Bupleurum falcatum L., has various pharmacological properties, including immunoregulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic effects. Several studies have investigated the anti-tumor effects of SSD on cancer in multiple organs. However, its role in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the suppressive effects of SSD on CRC cell survival and metastasis. SSD reduced the survival and colony formation ability of CRC cells. SSD-induced autophagy and apoptosis in CRC cells were measured using flow cytometry. SSD treatment increased LC3B and p62 autophagic factor levels in CRC cells. Moreover, SSD-induced apoptosis occurred through the cleavage of caspase-9, caspase-3, and PARP, along with the downregulation of the Bcl-2 family. In the in vivo experiment, a reduction in the number of metastatic tumor nodules in the lungs was observed after the oral administration of SSD. Based on these results, SSD inhibits the metastasis of CRC cells to the lungs by inducing autophagy and apoptosis. The biological activities of hesperidin-related compounds, such as hesperetin laurate (HTL), hesperetin (HT), hesperidin (HD), and hesperidin glucoside (HDG), were investigated in vitro. The compounds showed different hydrophobicities, and the octanol–water partition coefficient log P were 7.28 ± 0.06 for HTL, 2.59 ± 0.04 for HT, 2.13 ± 0.03 for HD, and −3.45 ± 0.06 for HDG, respectively. In the DPPH assay and β-carotene bleaching assay to determine antioxidant capacity, all compounds tested showed antioxidant activity in a concentration-dependent manner, although to varying degrees. HTL and HT showed similarly high activities compared to HD or HDG. HD and HDG did not show a significant difference despite the difference in solubility between the two. Cytotoxicity was high; in the order of hydrophobicity—HTL > HT > HD > HDL in keratinocyte HaCaT cells. All compounds tested showed reducing effects on cellular inflammatory mediators and cytokines induced by UV irradiation. However, HTL and HT effectively reduced nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels compared to HD and HDG. The inhibitory effects of hesperidin-related compounds on skin-resident microorganisms were evaluated by measuring minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). HTL showed the highest inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus, Cutibacterium acnes, Candida albicans, and Malassezia furfur, followed by HT, while HD and HDF showed little effect. In conclusion, the hydrophobicity of hesperidin-related compounds was estimated to be important for biological activity in vitro, as was the presence or absence of the sugar moiety. MHV-A59 is a beta-coronavirus that causes demyelinating encephalitis and hepatitis in mice. Recently, the mouse infection model of MHV-A59 has been used as an alternative animal infection model for SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, aiding the development of new antiviral drugs. In this study, the MHV-A59 model was employed to investigate the potential of SARS-CoV-2 UTRs as new targets for antiviral drugs. Optimal targets within the MHV-A59 UTRs were identified using a shRNA and siRNA design tool, focusing on RNA secondary stem-loop (SL) structures in the UTRs. We then examined whether the designed RNAi constructs could inhibit MHV-A59 replication. In the 5′UTR, the stem-loop 1 (SL1) was identified as the most effective target, while in the 3′UTR, the minimal element for the initiation of negative-strand RNA synthesis (MIN) proved to be the most effective. Importantly, siRNAs targeting SL1 and MIN structures significantly reduced total RNA synthesis, negative-strand genomic RNA synthesis, subgenomic (sg) RNA synthesis, viral titer, and the plaque size of MHV-A59 compared to the control. Although not statistically significant, the combination of siSL1 and siMIN had a stronger effect on inhibiting MHV-A59 replication than either siRNA monotherapy. Interestingly, while the SL1 structure is present in both MHV and SARS-CoV-2, the MIN structure is unique to MHV. This study focused on manufacturing efficient automobile sound-absorbing materials through alkaline treatment and dimple processing of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) nonwoven fabric. The rPET nonwoven fabric was produced with a sound-absorbing material through compression molding. It was improved through the development of porous sound-absorbing materials through alkaline treatment and resonant sound-absorbing materials through dimple processing. As a result of morphological analysis, alkaline treatment showed that pore size and air permeability increased according to temperature and concentration increase conditions. On the other hand, dimple processing caused a decrease in air permeability and a decrease in pores due to yarn fusion, and as the dimple diameter increased, the sound-absorbing coefficient increased in the 5000 Hz band. Finally, it was judged that effective sound absorption performance would be improved through a simple process through alkaline treatment and dimple processing, and thus there would be applicability in various industrial fields. Methane emissions from flooded rice paddies are a major source of atmospheric methane and represent a significant greenhouse gas with high climate-forcing potential due to anthropogenic activities globally. For sustainable agriculture, it is necessary to find effective methods for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions without reducing crop productivity. We investigated mechanisms to reduce methane emissions during rice cultivation by applying rice straw, rice husk biochar, humic acid, and a humic acid–iron complex, assessing greenhouse gases and rice yield over a single season. The results demonstrated that the treatment plots with rice straw and the humic acid–iron complex significantly reduced methane emissions (563 ± 113.9 kg ha−1) by 34.4% compared to plots treated with rice straw alone (859 ± 126.4 kg ha−1). Rice yield was not compromised compared to the control group treated with only NPK fertilizer, and growth in terms of plant height and tiller number was enhanced in the plots treated with rice straw and the humic acid–iron complex. Conversely, the plots treated solely with rice husk biochar and humic acid did not show a methane reduction effect when compared to the NPK treatment. The humic acid–iron complex has demonstrated potential as a methane mitigation agent with practical applicability in the field, warranting further long-term studies to validate its effectiveness. Background and Objectives: Endoscopic epidural neuroplasty (EEN) facilitates adhesiolysis through direct epiduroscopic visualization, offering more precise neural decompression than that exhibited by percutaneous epidural neuroplasty (PEN). We aimed to compare the effects of EEN and PEN for 6 months after treatment with lower back and radicular pain in patients. Methods: This retrospective study compared the visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores in patients with low back and radicular pain who underwent EEN or PEN with a steering catheter. The medical records of 107 patients were analyzed, with 73 and 34 undergoing EEN and PEN, respectively. Results: The VAS and ODI scores decreased at all time points after EEN and PEN. VAS and ODI scores decreased more in the EEN group than those in the PEN group at 1 day and 1- and 6-months post-procedure, indicating superior pain relief for both lower back and radicular pain through EEN. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the protein overexpression and gene amplification of HER2 in endometrial carcinoma (EC) and to evaluate its role as a prognostic factor in Korean women. Methods: A tissue microarray (TMA) was constructed from samples from 191 patients with diverse histologic types of EC. HER2 protein expression and gene amplification status were analyzed using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and silver in situ hybridization (SISH), respectively. All patients were treated and followed up at a single tertiary medical center in Seoul, Korea, between July 2009 and October 2020. Results: In terms of histological type, among the 191 EC patients, 157 had endometrioid carcinoma, nine had uterine serous papillary carcinoma (USPC), one had clear cell carcinoma, one had squamous cell carcinoma, eight had mixed carcinoma, and 15 had uterine carcinosarcoma (UC). HER2 protein overexpression was observed in eight of the 191 (4.2%) EC patients; of these patients, five had IHC scores of 2+, and three had IHC scores of 3+. The HER2 overexpression rates of USPC, UC, and endometrioid carcinomas were 33.3%, 26.6%, and 0.6%, respectively. HER2 protein overexpression was significant in USPC and UC tissues (p < 0.000) and was associated with poor overall survival (OS) (p < 0.001). HER2 gene amplification was confirmed in seven of 184 patients (3.8%), including three patients with USPC and four patients with UC. OS was significantly shorter in patients who had HER2 amplification (p < 0.001). On multivariate analysis, HER2 expression and HER2 amplification were statistically significantly associated with worse OS (p = 0.006). However, HER2 expression without amplification was not statistically associated with OS (p = 0.993). Conclusions: HER2 protein overexpression and gene amplification are significantly correlated with shorter OS in Korean women. This retrospective study with pelvic and spinal bone metastases compares the effects of RT and mEHT alone and in combination (RT + mEHT). Clinically, mEHT has a lower risk of adverse thermal effects, and due to its efficacy, mEHT can be used to treat RT-resistant lesions. The objective of our study was to present the results of RT combined with a special kind of HT (modulated electrohyperthermia, mEHT), in which some of the thermal effect is contributed by equivalent nonthermal components, drastically reducing the necessary power and energy. This retrospective study included 61 patients divided into three groups with pelvic and spinal bone metastases to compare the effects of RT and mEHT alone and in combination (RT + mEHT). A detailed evaluation of pain intensity, measured by the brief pain inventory score, MeM use, and breakthrough pain episodes, revealed no significant differences between RT and mEHT alone; thus, these individual methods were considered equivalent. However, RT + mEHT yielded significantly better results in terms of the above parameters. In South Korea, Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) collates greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories. However, the settlement category lacks a clear definition of land use and activity data. This study proposed a method for examining the settlement spatial extent and constructing activity data to estimate GHG emissions and absorption as a pilot calculation, as well as to provide data for land use classification. Utilizing cadastral maps (CDMs), settlement spatial extents were determined, with settlements occupying approximately 11% of the total land area in 2019, or 9% excluding overlaps. Activity data for settlements were established through a sampling method and analysis of aerial orthoimages from 2000 and 2019. After removing overlaps with digital forest type maps and smart farm maps, settlement activity data covered approximately 18.47% based on CDMs, or 12.66% excluding overlaps. In 2019, CO2 emissions and absorptions were estimated at 622.16 ktCO2yr−1 based on CDMs and 242.16 ktCO2yr−1, excluding overlaps. To enhance GHG inventory calculation consistency and compliance with TACCC principles, clear spatial extents for settlements must be established. Retinal degenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, significantly contribute to adult blindness. The Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat is a well-established disease model for studying these dystrophies; however, molecular investigations remain limited. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of retinal degeneration in RCS rats, including an immunodeficient RCS (iRCS) sub-strain, using ocular coherence tomography, electroretinography, histology, and molecular dissection using transcriptomics and immunofluorescence. No significant differences in retinal degeneration progression were observed between the iRCS and immunocompetent RCS rats, suggesting a minimal role of adaptive immune responses in disease. Transcriptomic alterations were primarily in inflammatory signaling pathways, characterized by the strong upregulation of Tnfa, an inflammatory signaling molecule, and Nox1, a contributor to reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Additionally, a notable decrease in Alox15 expression was observed, pointing to a possible reduction in anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators. These findings were corroborated by immunostaining, which demonstrated increased photoreceptor lipid peroxidation (4HNE) and photoreceptor citrullination (CitH3) during retinal degeneration. Our work enhances the understanding of molecular changes associated with retinal degeneration in RCS rats and offers potential therapeutic targets within inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways for confirmatory research and development. (1) Background and Methods: This study evaluated characteristics of South Korean patients necessitating home-based primary care (HBPC) from 2018 to 2022, distinguishing between homebound individuals with chronic conditions and those with registered disabilities. (2) Result: Among 171 HBPC recipients, 56.1% were homebound, predominantly older with a median age of 81 years (interquartile range (IQR 68.5–86.0)), while 43.9% were disabled, generally younger with a median age of 39 years (IQR, 28–64). Activities of daily living were assessed, revealing a median score of 14 (IQR, 10–19), indicative of high care dependency. The most common conditions among homebound patients were dementia (27.1%) and physical mobility difficulties (21.9%), whereas mental disabilities (53.3%) and mobility issues (36.0%) prevailed in disabled patients. The primary HBPC needs for homebound patients included management of acute medical conditions (27.1%) and sores (17.7%). Conversely, regular health check-ups (46.7%) and management of neuropsychiatric symptoms (26.7%) were prevalent among the disabled group. (3) Conclusion: Notably, over 90% of HBPC patients required assistance with daily activities, highlighting significant differences in the needs and characteristics between older, homebound individuals with multiple comorbidities and younger, disabled patients receiving medical aid. We report a fusedly deposited frequency-selective composite (FD-FSCs), fabricated with a dual-nozzle 3D printer using a conductive carbon black (CB) polylactic acid (PLA) composite filament and a pure PLA polymer filament. The square frequency-selective pattern was constructed by the conductive CB/PLA nanocomposite, and the apertures of the pattern were filled with the pure dielectric PLA material, which allows the FD-FSC to maintain one single plane, even under bending, and also affects the resonating frequency due to the characteristic impedance of PLA (εr′ ≈ 2.0). The number of the deposition layer and the printing direction were observed to affect electrical conductivity, complex permittivity, and the frequency selectivity of the FD-FSCs. In addition, the FD-FSCs designed for an X-band showed partial transmission around the resonant frequency and was observed to, quite uniformly, transmit microwaves in the decibel level of −2.17~−2.83 dB in the whole X-band, unlike a metallic frequency selective surface with full transmission at the resonance frequency. FD-FSCs embedded radar absorbing structure (RAS) demonstrates an excellent microwave absorption and a wide effective bandwidth. At a thickness of 4.3 mm, the 10 dB bandwidth covered the entire X-band (8.2~12.4 GHz) range of 4.2 GHz. Therefore, the proposed FD-FSCs fabricated by dual-nozzle 3D printing can be an impedance modifier to expand the design space and the application of radar absorbing materials and structures. This study developed and evaluated the effects of a mobile-integrated simulation training program on infection prevention and nursing practices based on past experiences of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) care. We developed mobile videos for the experimental group and an educational booklet for the control group based on the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model. The effects of the simulation program with the use of mobile videos on knowledge of COVID-19 management, infection prevention practice confidence, and clinical decision-making anxiety and confidence were analyzed through a randomized controlled pretest–posttest experimental design. Data from 109 participants were analyzed. Five mobile videos were developed with a total duration of 43 min and 13 s. The experimental group showed significantly greater improvement in knowledge of COVID-19 management (p = 0.002) and infection prevention practice confidence (p < 0.001). Using the mobile-integrated COVID-19 nursing practice simulation program, nurses who have no experience with emerging infectious diseases can increase their infection control knowledge and infection prevention practice confidence. In conclusion, the mobile-integrated COVID-19 nursing practice simulation program was effective in increasing infection control knowledge and infection prevention practice confidence in nurses without COVID-19 care experience. We aimed to assess the temporal trends of incident syphilis and its associated risk factors among men with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in Korea during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of men with HIV attending an HIV clinic in Korea between 2005 and 2022. Of 767 men with HIV, 499 were included and contributed 3220 person-years (PY) of the observation period. Eighty-two patients were diagnosed with incident syphilis, with an overall incidence of 2.55/100 PY (95% confidence interval [CI] 20.56–31.53). The incidence of syphilis per 100 PY gradually decreased from 2.43 (0.79–7.42) in 2005–2007 to 1.85 (1.08–3.17) in 2014–2016; however, it increased to 3.0 (1.99–4.53) in 2017–2019, and further to 3.33 (2.26–4.89) in 2020–2022. A multivariate analysis identified young age (≤30 years versus >50, adjusted HR 6.27, 95% CI 2.38–16.56, p < 0.001), treponemal test positive at baseline (2.33, 1.48–3.67, p < 0.001), men who have sex with men (2.36, 1.34–4.16, p = 0.003), and history of incarceration (2.62, 1.21–5.67, p = 0.015) as risk factors for incident syphilis. Recently, syphilis incidence in men with HIV has increased in Korea, especially in young patients and at-risk groups, highlighting the need for enhanced regular screening and targeted behavioral interventions among these populations. Liver damage caused by various factors results in fibrosis and inflammation, leading to cirrhosis and cancer. Fibrosis results in the accumulation of extracellular matrix components. The role of STAT proteins in mediating liver inflammation and fibrosis has been well documented; however, approved therapies targeting STAT3 inhibition against liver disease are lacking. This study investigated the anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory effects of STAT3 decoy oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) in hepatocytes and liver fibrosis mouse models. STAT3 decoy ODN were delivered into cells using liposomes and hydrodynamic tail vein injection into 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC)-fed mice in which liver injury was induced. STAT3 target gene expression changes were verified using qPCR and Western blotting. Liver tissue fibrosis and bile duct proliferation were assessed in animal experiments using staining techniques, and macrophage and inflammatory cytokine distribution was verified using immunohistochemistry. This study investigated the oral symptoms and subjective health perceptions of Korean adolescents due to COVID-19. Data from the 17th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (KYRBS; 2021) were analyzed, and 54,848 Korean middle and high school students were included in the study. Frequency, cross-tabulation, and logistic regression analyses were performed using IBM SPSS (v. 22.0; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. The survey results on subjective health perception showed that 64.8% considered themselves "healthy", 26.1% rated themselves "moderate" in health, and 9.26% rated themselves "unhealthy." When asked about brushing their teeth after lunch at school, students answered "no" more frequently than "yes". Participants provided significantly different responses to questions related to receiving "sealant treatment", "having broken teeth", "experiencing tooth pain when eating", "having throbbing tooth pain", and "having pain and bleeding in gums". Regarding the relationship between oral symptoms and subjective health perceptions due to COVID-19, students perceived themselves as healthy when they had no throbbing tooth pain, risk of pain, bleeding in the gums, or symptoms of toothache when eating. Results reveal a relationship between oral symptoms and subjective health perceptions due to COVID-19. Despite growing scholarly attention to what determines effective corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication, consumers' limited awareness of and attention to CSR messages remain critical challenges for organizations. This study aims to examine the effects of message specificity on an organization's intended outcomes of CSR communication and to explore the mediating role of perceived social distance in these relationships by applying construal level theory (CLT). We conducted an online experiment (n = 293), and the results revealed that message specificity had a positive impact on consumer-company identification, word-of-mouth intention, and CSR participation intention. Moreover, perceived social distance significantly mediated the relationships between message specificity and the outcomes of CSR communication. Applying CLT, this study offers theoretical implications for the psychological mechanism of how message specificity generates desired outcomes in CSR communication. In addition, we tested these mediation effects in the context of the geographic proximity (close vs. remote) of the CSR communication to participants; the practical implication is that reducing perceived social distance through message specificity is even more effective for geographically distant CSR campaigns. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are types of phytoplankton overgrowth that adversely affect marine ecosystems and aquaculture resources. One such HAB species, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, occurs irregularly and causes significant damage to the aquaculture industry along the coastal regions of Korea. In this study, we developed and implemented an integrated system to detect and predict HAB occurrences in real time. This system comprises four main components: (1) a real-time detection system utilizing acoustic sensing, ocean weather, water temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll, satellite images, genetic analysis, and optics; (2) a prediction model system based on current and tidal, HAB occurrence, and HAB movement and diffusion models; (3) an additional data based on HAB information of sampling data and HAB information of GPS data, and (4) an integrated information system utilizing data storage servers and a visualization platform. We applied and assessed the efficiency of this integrated system in the South Sea of Korea from 2017 to 2019. Particularly, HABs occurred significantly in 2019, and the system demonstrated the feasibility of detection and prediction under field conditions. This study aimed to investigate the correlation among the contents of marker compounds, growth characteristics, and environmental factors of Schisandra chinensis fruits across South Korea. The fruits were collected from 36 cultivation sites in 28 regions across the country. We investigated nine growth characteristics, twelve soil physicochemical properties, eight meteorological data, and three marker compounds in this study. We optimized and validated an optimized method for quantifying marker compounds using UPLC and performed correlation analysis among the contents of marker compounds, growth characteristics, and environmental factors. The UPLC-UV method for analyzing marker compounds was validated by measuring linearity, LOD, LOQ, precision, and accuracy. The marker compounds were negatively correlated with the fruit size and sugar contents, and growth characteristics were negatively correlated with some physicochemical properties of the soil. Doxorubicin (DOX), an effective chemotherapeutic drug, causes cardiotoxicity in a cumulative and dose-dependent manner. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of hot-water extract of Capsella bursa-pastoris (CBW) on DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DICT). We utilized H9c2 rat cardiomyocytes and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells to evaluate the effects of CBW on DOX-induced cell death. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and oxygen consumption rate were measured in H9c2 cells. C57BL/6 mice were treated with DOX and CBW to assess their impact on various cardiac parameters. Human-induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived cardiomyocytes were also used to investigate DOX-induced electrophysiological changes and the potential ameliorative effects of CBW. UPLC-TQ/MS analysis identified seven flavonoids in CBW, with luteolin-7-O-glucoside and isoorientin as the major compounds. CBW inhibited DOX-induced death of H9c2 rat cardiomyocytes but did not affect DOX-induced death of MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. CBW increased SOD levels in a dose-dependent manner, reducing ROS production and increasing the oxygen consumption rate in H9c2 cells. The heart rate, RR interval, QT, and ST prolongation remarkably recovered in C57BL/6 mice treated with the combination of DOX and CBW compared to those in mice treated with DOX alone. Administration of CBW with DOX effectively alleviated collagen accumulation, cell death in mouse heart tissues, and reduced the levels of creatinine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in serum. Furthermore, DOX-induced pathological electrophysiological features in human-induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived cardiomyocytes were ameliorated by CBW. CBW may prevent DICT by stabilizing SOD and scavenging ROS. The presence of flavonoids, particularly luteolin-7-O-glucoside and isoorientin, in CBW may contribute to its protective effects. Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) levels are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. In this retrospective cohort study, we examined whether the concentration of indoor PM2.5 affected pregnancy outcomes. Additionally, we evaluated biomarkers of pregnancy-related complications caused by fine dust. We collected clinical information and data based on residential addresses from the Air Korea database to assess PM2.5 exposure levels. As a multicenter prospective cohort study, we measured the indoor PM2.5 concentration and inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. The PM2.5 concentration of the low-birth-weight (LBW) delivery group was 27.21 μg/m3, which was significantly higher than that of the normal-birth-weight (NBW) group (26.23 μg/m3) (p = 0.02). When the newborns were divided by sex, the PM2.5 concentration of the LBW group was 27.89 μg/m3 in male infants, which was significantly higher than that of the NBW group (26.26 μg/m3) (p = 0.01). In the prospective study, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine significantly increased in the high-concentration group (113.55 ng/mL, compared with 92.20 ng/mL in the low-concentration group); in the high-concentration group, the rates of preterm birth (PTB) and small size for gestational age significantly increased (p < 0.01, p = 0.01). Various kinds of plastics have been developed over the past century, vastly improving the quality of life. However, the indiscriminate production and irresponsible management of plastics have led to the accumulation of plastic waste, emerging as a pressing environmental concern. To establish a clean and sustainable plastic economy, plastic recycling becomes imperative to mitigate resource depletion and replace non-eco-friendly processes, such as incineration. Although chemical and mechanical recycling technologies exist, the prevalence of composite plastics in product manufacturing complicates recycling efforts. In recent years, the biodegradation of plastics using enzymes and microorganisms has been reported, opening a new possibility for biotechnological plastic degradation and bio-upcycling. This review provides an overview of microbial strains capable of degrading various plastics, highlighting key enzymes and their role. In addition, recent advances in plastic waste valorization technology based on systems metabolic engineering are explored in detail. Menopause is a significant phase in a woman's life. Menopausal symptoms can affect overall well-being and quality of life. Conventionally, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is used to alleviate menopausal symptoms; however, depending on the conditions, HRT may lead to side effects, necessitating the exploration of alternative therapies with fewer side effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of a combination of soybean germ extract (S30) containing 30% (w/w) isoflavone and a probiotic, Lactobacillus gasseri (LGA1), on menopausal conditions in an ovariectomized (OVX) rat model. We evaluated the impact of S30+LGA on body weight, estrogen markers, uterine and bone health, vascular markers, and neurotransmitter levels. The results revealed that treatment with S30+LGA1 significantly improved body weight and uterine and bone health. Moreover, S30+LGA1 demonstrated promising effects on lipid profile, liver function, and vascular markers and positively impacted serotonin and norepinephrine levels, indicating potential mood-enhancing effects. In conclusion, S30+LGA1, possessing anti-menopausal effects in vitro and in vivo, can be recommended as a soy-based diet, which offers various health benefits, especially for menopausal women. Plant roots show distinct gene-expression profiles from those of shoots under abiotic stress conditions. In this study, we performed mRNA sequencing (mRNA-Seq) to analyze the transcriptional profiling of Arabidopsis roots under osmotic stress conditions—high salinity (NaCl) and drought (mannitol). The roots demonstrated significantly distinct gene-expression changes from those of the aerial parts under both the NaCl and the mannitol treatment. We identified 68 closely connected transcription-factor genes involved in osmotic stress-signal transduction in roots. Well-known abscisic acid (ABA)-dependent and/or ABA-independent osmotic stress-responsive genes were not considerably upregulated in the roots compared to those in the aerial parts, indicating that the osmotic stress response in the roots may be regulated by other uncharacterized stress pathways. Moreover, we identified 26 osmotic-stress-responsive genes with distinct expressions of alternative splice variants in the roots. The quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction further confirmed that alternative splice variants, such as those for ANNAT4, MAGL6, TRM19, and CAD9, were differentially expressed in the roots, suggesting that alternative splicing is an important regulatory mechanism in the osmotic stress response in roots. Altogether, our results suggest that tightly connected transcription-factor families, as well as alternative splicing and the resulting splice variants, are involved in the osmotic stress response in roots. The purpose of this study was to confirm the antiproliferative and apoptotic induction potential of a saccharin and caffeine combination in ovarian cancer cells. The cell line used was Ovcar-3, and the cell viability was measured through a WST-8 assay, while a Chou–Talalay assay was used to confirm the synergistic effect of saccharin and caffeine on the ovarian cancer cells. A clonogenic assay, annexin V-FITC/PI-PE double-staining, and RT-PCR were performed to confirm the expression of genes that induce colony formation, cell viability, and apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells treated with the saccharin–caffeine combination. It was demonstrated that both saccharin and caffeine decreased the viability of Ovcar-3 cells, and the cell viability decreased even more significantly when the cells were treated with the combination of saccharin and caffeine. The clonogenic assay results showed that the number of colonies decreased the most when saccharin and caffeine were combined, and the number of colonies also significantly decreased compared to the single-treatment groups. Based on flow cytometry analysis using annexin V-FITC/PI-PE double-staining, it was confirmed that the decrease in cell viability caused by the combination of saccharin and caffeine was correlated with the induction of apoptosis. The results of the RT-PCR confirmed that the combined treatment of saccharin and caffeine promoted cell apoptosis by regulating the expression of apoptosis-inducing genes. Typically, emergency bells are security facilities that, when activated, trigger an alarm and immediately dispatch a police car to prevent crime. However, there currently exists an ambiguity in the criteria for emergency bell installation. Consequently, this study aims to find an optimal location for emergency bells whilst considering several factors like cumulative crime incidents. In particular, we exploited emergency bell location data, data on five major crimes, and the geographic information of administrative dongs (primary division of districts) in this study. Specifically, we performed correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and K-means clustering for exploratory data analysis. To effectively cover all 17,437 crimes, which are not covered by the existing emergency bells in Gwangju metropolitan city from 2018 to 2021, the results from the implementation of the emergency bell location set-covering problem revealed the need for about 6228 emergency bells. More precisely, the emergency bell maximal covering location problem was employed to derive the coverage percentage for 250, 500, 800, 1000, and 1500 emergency bells. The results showed that 2850 emergency bells were required to cover over 80% of crime occurrence coordinates, saving over half of the budget compared with covering them all. There is a dearth of studies investigating whether the combination of low-intensity statins with ezetimibe can reduce the risk of diabetes in patients requiring statin therapy. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of combination therapy on the prevention of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) elevation in patients without diabetes. Sixty-eight patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive a combination of low-intensity rosuvastatin (5 mg/day) and ezetimibe (10 mg/day) or high-intensity rosuvastatin (20 mg/day). The primary endpoint was the absolute difference in the HbA1c levels at 12 weeks. The HbA1c level showed an overall elevation of 0.11% at 12 weeks compared to that at baseline (mean ± standard deviation: 5.78 ± 0.3%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.86–6.07, p = 0.044). The HbA1c levels did not differ between the groups at 12 weeks (least square mean difference: 0.001, 95% CI: 0.164–0.16, p = 0.999). Our study found that the combination of low-intensity rosuvastatin and ezetimibe did not yield significant differences in HbA1c levels compared to high-intensity rosuvastatin alone after 12 weeks in patients without diabetes. This suggests that the combination of low-intensity rosuvastatin and ezetimibe may not be an effective strategy for preventing HbA1c elevation in patients without diabetes requiring statins. Simple Summary: Modulated electro-hyperthermia (mEHT) is a heating therapy that uses synergized thermal and nonthermal effects to heat and destroy malignant cells selectively without damaging healthy cells. This article presents the clinical validation of mEHT. The therapy is dominantly applied for such advanced malignancies when the conventional oncotherapies fail to apply. Survival results of mEHT were collected and compared with other methods. The results demonstrate the superiority of the mEHT method. The mEHT method uses tissues' thermal and bioelectromagnetic heterogeneity for the selective mechanisms. The success of the therapy for advanced, relapsed, and metastatic aggressive tumors can only be demonstrated by measuring survival time and quality of life (QoL). The complication is that mEHT-treated patients cannot be curatively treated any longer with "gold standards", where the permanent progression of the disease, the refractory, relapsing situation, the organ failure, the worsening of blood counts, etc., block them. Collecting a cohort of these patients is frequently impossible. Only an intent-to-treat (ITT) patient group was available. Due to the above limitations, many studies have single-arm data collection. The Phase III trial of advanced cervix tumors subgrouping of HIV-negative and -positive patients showed the stable efficacy of mEHT in all patients' subgroups. The single-arm represents lower-level evidence, which can be improved by comparing the survival data of various studies from different institutes. The Kaplan–Meier probability comparison had no significant differences, so pooled data were compared to other methods. Following this approach, we demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of mEHT in the cases of glioblastoma multiform, pancreas carcinomas, lung tumors, and colorectal tumors. Our lives are comprised of moment-to-moment activities and experiences. According to the Model of Human Occupation, our occupational experiences can be affected by volition, which consists of personal causation, values, and interests. This study investigated how momentary volition could affect activity satisfaction and mind-wandering while performing occupations. This study also examined the relationship of momentary volition with overall life perspectives on life satisfaction and life balance. Undergraduate students participated in this cross-sectional study. The experience sampling method (ESM), which repeatedly collects real-time data in everyday life, was applied in this study to measure students' momentary states such as activity, volition, activity satisfaction, and mind-wandering. After completing the ESM, participants' life satisfaction and life balance were measured using the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and the Life Balance Inventory (LBI), respectively. Forty-two participants and 1092 sampling data points were included in the analysis. At the event level, regression analysis was performed to identify volition elements to contribute to activity satisfaction and mind-wandering. At the personal level, correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship of momentary volition to life satisfaction and life balance. Momentary personal causation, values, and interests contributed to activity satisfaction. Mind-wandering was predicted negatively by interests but positively by personal causation. Momentary interests were positively correlated with SWLS and LBI scores. This study demonstrated that momentary volition was associated with activity satisfaction and engagement, as well as life satisfaction and balance in undergraduate students. Momentary volition, especially interests, contributed to positive occupational experiences and life perspectives. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) displays a broad range of phenotypic variations, often overlapping with acquired retinal diseases. Timely recognition and differentiation of RP masquerades is paramount due to the treatable nature of many such conditions. This review seeks to present examples of pseudo-RP cases and provide a comprehensive overview of RP masquerades. We first present two pseudo-RP cases, including comprehensive clinical histories and multimodal retinal imaging, to highlight the important role of accurate diagnoses that subsequently steered effective intervention. Subsequently, we conduct an in-depth review of RP masquerades to provide valuable insights into their key distinguishing features and management considerations. The recent approval of ocular gene therapy and the development of investigational gene-based treatments have brought genetic testing to the forefront for RP patients. However, it is important to note that genetic testing currently lacks utility as a screening tool for inherited retinal diseases (IRDs), including RP. The integrity of a precise clinical assessment remains indispensable for the diagnosis of both RP and RP masquerade conditions, thereby facilitating prompt intervention and appropriate management strategies. The importance of accurate ship performance estimation is increasing for efficient ship operation. Ship performance has been evaluated through model tests in the past, but there are limitations in terms of facilities and costs. With the spread of high-performance computers, the method of evaluating the performance of a ship by numerical analysis, especially computational fluid dynamics (CFD), has become common. There have been many numerical studies on added resistance under various wave conditions for many years, showing a high reliability. Meanwhile, most of the studies were conducted under conditions where the degree of freedom (DOF) of the ship was limited due to computational complexity. In this study, we tried to compare the added resistance performance and fluid dynamics of S-VLCC with 6 DOFs in the regular wave conditions. One of the methods for utilizing the 6 DOFs is the soft-mooring system, which allows springs to be attached to the bow and stern to recover the non-restoring force of the hull. The second method considers the free-running condition. The virtual disk is used for the self-propulsion of the ship, and the rudder can be rotated to maintain its course. The propeller rotation speed and rudder angle are controlled through PID control. The bow wave (ψ = 180°) and oblique wave (ψ = 150°, 120°) conditions were considered, and various regular wave conditions from short to long wavelengths were regarded. The effects of restraint conditions on the added resistance and motion response amplitude operator (RAO), according to each wave condition, were compared. As a result, there was a difference in the roll motion for each restraint condition, and the y-direction force and yaw moment generated on the hull were compared to analyze the cause. The growth characteristics and active compounds of plants are influenced by various environmental factors, including light, temperature, soil, and precipitation. These factors interact with each plant in a unique way. In this study, we collected fruit and soil samples from 17 cultivation sites in October 2020 to investigate the relationship among environmental factors, growth characteristics, and active compounds of H. dulcis seed and fruit. We developed an optimized method for quantifying active compounds using ultra-performance liquid chromatography and performed correlation analyses with the surveyed environmental factors. Results showed that the size and fresh weight of H. dulcis fruits were positively correlated with exchangeable Mg, Na, and silt texture proportion in the soil. The temperature was positively correlated with sugar content in the fruits but negatively correlated with fruit weight, and precipitation was negatively correlated with fruit size. Results also showed a positive correlation between the active compounds and growth characteristics such as fruit length, seed number per fruit, and fresh weight. Although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is no longer a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has had a vast impact to date. Hence, continuous management is required, given the uncertainty caused by the potential evolution of SARS-CoV-2. Reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) diagnosis has been fundamental in overcoming this issue. In this study, the performances of two rapid RT-qPCR assays (Real-Q Direct SARS-CoV-2 Detection Kit and Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 fast PCR Assay) with short PCR times were comparatively evaluated using a STANDARD M nCoV Real-Time Detection Kit (STANDARD M, conventional RT-qPCR assay). All kits showed a limit of detection values (102–103 copies/reaction). The evaluation showed that the two rapid assay tests had ≥97.89% sensitivity and ≥99.51% specificity (κ = 0.98) for individual samples and ≥97.32% sensitivity and ≥97.67% specificity for pooled samples compared to STANDARD M. These results indicate that the two rapid RT-qPCR kits, which showed significant time reduction in performance, are as effective as a conventional RT-qPCR assay. Taq DNA polymerases have played an important role in molecular biology for several years and are frequently used for polymerase chain reaction (PCR); hence, there is an increasing interest in developing a convenient method for preparing Taq DNA polymerase for routine use in laboratories. We developed a method using Escherichia coli (E. coli) that expresses thermostable Taq DNA polymerase directly in the PCR without purification. The Taq gene was transformed into E. coli and expressed. After overnight incubation and washing, E. coli-expressing Taq DNA polymerase (EcoliTaq) was used as the DNA polymerase without purification. EcoliTaq showed activity comparable to that of commercial DNA polymerase and remained stable for 3 months. With a high-pH buffer containing 2% Tween 20 and 0.4 M trehalose, EcoliTaq facilitated direct PCR amplification from anticoagulated whole blood samples. EcoliTaq exhibited good performance in allele-specific PCR using both purified DNA and whole blood samples. Furthermore, it proved to be useful as a DNA polymerase in hot-start PCR by effectively minimizing non-specific amplification. We developed a simple and cost-effective direct and hot-start PCR method in which EcoliTaq was used directly as a PCR enzyme, thus eliminating the laborious and time-consuming steps of polymerase purification. This study presents an efficient super-resolution (SR) method for targets observed by satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR). First, a small target image is extracted from a large-scale SAR image and undergoes proper preprocessing. The preprocessing step is adaptively designed depending on the types of movements of targets. Next, the principal scattering centers of targets are extracted using the compressive sensing technique. Subsequently, an impulse response function (IRF) of the satellite SAR system (IRF-S) is generated using a SAR image of a corner reflector located at the calibration site. Then, the spatial resolution of the IRF-S is improved by the spectral estimation technique. Finally, according to the SAR signal model, the super-resolved IRF-S is combined with the extracted scattering centers to generate a super-resolved target image. In our experiments, the SR capabilities for various targets were investigated using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Compared with conventional SAR SR methods, the proposed scheme exhibits greater robustness towards improvement of the spatial resolution of the target image when the degrees of SR are high. Additionally, the proposed scheme has faster computation time (CT) than other SR algorithms, irrespective of the degree of SR. Retinal degenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa, lack effective therapies. Conventional monotherapeutic approaches fail to target the multiple affected pathways in retinal degeneration. However, the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) secretes several neurotrophic factors addressing diverse cellular pathways, potentially preserving photoreceptors. This study explored human embryonic stem cell-derived, polarized RPE soluble factors (PRPE-SF) as a combination treatment for retinal degeneration. PRPE-SF promoted retinal progenitor cell survival, reduced oxidative stress in ARPE-19 cells, and demonstrated critical antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects for preventing retinal degeneration in the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) rat model. Importantly, PRPE-SF treatment preserved retinal structure and scotopic b-wave amplitudes, suggesting therapeutic potential for delaying retinal degeneration. PRPE-SF is uniquely produced using biomimetic membranes for RPE polarization and maturation, promoting a protective RPE secretome phenotype. Additionally, PRPE-SF is produced without animal serum to avoid immunogenicity in future clinical development. Lastly, PRPE-SF is a combination of neurotrophic factors, potentially ameliorating multiple dysfunctions in retinal degenerations. Respecting the preference for a place of care is essential for advance care planning in patients with advanced cancer. This retrospective study included adult patients with cancer referred to an inpatient palliative care consultation team at a tertiary acute care hospital in South Korea between April 2019 and December 2020. Patients' preference for place of care and demographic and clinical factors were recorded, and the actual discharge locations were categorized as home or non-home. Patients discharged home but with unintended hospital visits within 2 months were also investigated. Of the 891 patients referred to the palliative care consultation team, 210 (23.6%) preferred to be discharged home. Among them, 113 (53.8%) were discharged home. No significant differences were found between patients who preferred home discharge and those who did not. Home discharge was higher among female patients (p = 0.04) and lower in those with poor oral intake (p < 0.001) or dyspnea (p = 0.02). Of the 113 patients discharged home, 37 (32.8%) had unintended hospital visits within 2 months. Approximately one-quarter of hospitalized patients with advanced cancer preferred to be discharged home, but only half of them received the home discharge. Novel genetic and epigenetic factors involved in the development and prognosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) have been identified. We previously observed that erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1-like 3 (EPB41L3) increased in the lung fibroblasts of IPF patients. Thus, we investigated the role of EPB41L3 in IPF by comparing the EPB41L3 mRNA and protein expression of lung fibroblast between patients with IPF and controls. We also investigated the regulation of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) in an epithelial cell line (A549) and fibroblast-to-myofibroblast transition (FMT) in a fibroblast cell line (MRC5) by overexpressing and silencing EPB41L3. EPB41L3 mRNA and protein levels, as measured using RT-PCR, real-time PCR, and Western blot, were significantly higher in fibroblasts derived from 14 IPF patients than in those from 10 controls. The mRNA and protein expression of EPB41L3 was upregulated during transforming growth factor-β-induced EMT and FMT. Overexpression of EPB41L3 in A549 cells using lenti-EPB41L3 transfection suppressed the mRNA and protein expression of N-cadherin and COL1A1. Treatment with EPB41L3 siRNA upregulated the mRNA and protein expression of N-cadherin. Overexpression of EPB41L3 in MRC5 cells using lenti-EPB41L3 transfection suppressed the mRNA and protein expression of fibronectin and α-SMA. Finally, treatment with EPB41L3 siRNA upregulated the mRNA and protein expression of FN1, COL1A1, and VIM. In conclusion, these data strongly support an inhibitory effect of EPB41L3 on the process of fibrosis and suggest the therapeutic potential of EPB41L3 as an anti-fibrotic mediator. Since December 2019, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has infected people worldwide. Owing to its rapid spread, elective surgeries, including spine surgery, have been re-scheduled. We analyzed nationwide data to investigate changes in the volume of spine surgery during the first two years of the pandemic. Nationwide data from January 2016 to December 2021 were obtained. We compared the total number of patients who underwent spine surgery and related medical expenses before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. In February and September, the number of patients was significantly smaller compared to January and August, respectively. Despite the pandemic, the proportion of patients undergoing spine surgery for degenerative diseases in 2021 was the highest. In contrast, the proportions of patients undergoing spine surgery for tumors showed a continuous decrease from 2019 to 2021. Although the number of spine surgeries performed at tertiary hospitals was lowest in 2020, it was not significantly smaller than that in 2019.The number of patients who underwent spine surgery in March 2020, during the first outbreak, decreased compared to the previous month, which differed from the trend observed in the pre-COVID-19 period. Biochar emerged as a potential solution to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, though previous studies obtained variable results regarding its effects on methane (CH4) emissions and crop yields. Global meta-analyses were conducted regarding the effectiveness of biochar, though regional meta-analyses are still needed. We performed a meta-analysis of 43 published papers to obtain the central tendency of the response to biochar application in East Asian rice paddies. Biochar application significantly reduced methane emissions while increasing the soil organic carbon (SOC) content and crop yield. We identified the most significant influencing factors on the CH4 emissions, SOC content, and crop yield. Our findings provide a scientific basis for the application of biochar to East Asian rice paddies, as well as to study the effects of biochar application in East Asian rice paddies. Cudrania tricuspidata is a traditional medicinal herb in East Asia. The compounds of plants vary depending on environmental factors, such as soil, temperature, drainage, and so on. However, few to no studies have been done on the correlation among environment, growth, and compounds in C. tricuspidata. Thus, we aimed to investigate their relationship. Samples of C. tricuspidata fruit and cultivation soil were collected from 28 cultivation sites in October 2021. Six growth characteristics, eleven soil physicochemical properties, seven meteorological data points, and three active compounds were investigated in this study. We developed and validated an optimized method for quantifying active compounds using UPLC and performed correlation analysis of the environment, growth characteristics, and active compounds. The UPLC-UV method for determining active compounds was validated by measuring the linearity, LOD, LOQ, precision, and accuracy using UPLC. The LOD and LOQ were 0.01–0.03 µg/mL and 0.04–0.09 µg/mL, respectively. The precision was acceptable with RSD% values less than 2%. The recoveries ranged from 97.25 to 104.98% with RSD values <2%, within the acceptable limits. The active compounds were negatively correlated with the size of the fruit, and the growth characteristics were negatively correlated with some environmental factors. Agarobiose (AB; d-galactose-β-1,4-AHG), produced by one-step acid hydrolysis of agarose of red seaweed, is considered a promising cosmetic ingredient due to its skin-moisturizing activity. In this study, the use of AB as a cosmetic ingredient was found to be hampered due to its instability at high temperature and alkaline pH. Therefore, to increase the chemical stability of AB, we devised a novel process to synthesize ethyl-agarobioside (ethyl-AB) from the acid-catalyzed alcoholysis of agarose. This process mimics the generation of ethyl α-glucoside and glyceryl α-glucoside by alcoholysis in the presence of ethanol and glycerol during the traditional Japanese sake-brewing process. Ethyl-AB also showed in vitro skin-moisturizing activity similar to that of AB, but showed higher thermal and pH stability than AB. Ransomware is one type of malware that involves restricting access to files by encrypting files stored on the victim's system and demanding money in return for file recovery. Although various ransomware detection technologies have been introduced, existing ransomware detection technologies have certain limitations and problems that affect their detection ability. Therefore, there is a need for new detection technologies that can overcome the problems of existing detection methods and minimize the damage from ransomware. A technology that can be used to detect files infected by ransomware and by measuring the entropy of files has been proposed. However, from an attacker's point of view, neutralization technology can bypass detection through neutralization using entropy. A representative neutralization method is one that involves decreasing the entropy of encrypted files by using an encoding technology such as base64. This technology also makes it possible to detect files that are infected by ransomware by measuring entropy after decoding the encoded files, which, in turn, means the failure of the ransomware detection-neutralization technology. Therefore, this paper derives three requirements for a more sophisticated ransomware detection-neutralization method from the perspective of an attacker for it to have novelty. These requirements are (1) it must not be decoded; (2) it must support encryption using secret information; and (3) the entropy of the generated ciphertext must be similar to that of plaintext. The proposed neutralization method satisfies these requirements, supports encryption without decoding, and applies format-preserving encryption that can adjust the input and output lengths. To overcome the limitations of neutralization technology using the encoding algorithm, we utilized format-preserving encryption, which could allow the attacker to manipulate the entropy of the ciphertext as desired by changing the expression range of numbers and controlling the input and output lengths in a very free manner. To apply format-preserving encryption, Byte Split, BinaryToASCII, and Radix Conversion methods were evaluated, and an optimal neutralization method was derived based on the experimental results of these three methods. As a result of the comparative analysis of the neutralization performance with existing studies, when the entropy threshold value was 0.5 in the Radix Conversion method, which was the optimal neutralization method derived from the proposed study, the neutralization accuracy was improved by 96% based on the PPTX file format. Watermelon produces many byproducts (watermelon rind and skin) even though those components contain various bioactive compounds, including citrulline. This study evaluated the citrulline concentration, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP assays) of different parts of watermelon and investigated the bioavailability of citrulline from different parts of watermelon using an in vitro human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cell monolayer model. Solid-phase extracted watermelon flesh, rind, and skin samples were treated on a Caco-2 cell monolayer for 1, 2, and 4 h. The collected basolateral solution at each time point was analyzed for the percentage of citrulline transport. Watermelon flesh had the highest citrulline content, but the watermelon skin had the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity compared to other watermelon parts. The citrulline bioavailability showed greater % transport in watermelon skin than in watermelon flesh, rind, and L-citrulline standard. It may be due to the different food matrices of watermelon parts. This suggests that the utilization of watermelon by-products such as skin would help develop value-added products with better bioavailability of citrulline. Nitroreductase (NTR) has the ability to activate nitro group-containing prodrugs and decompose explosives; thus, the evaluation of NTR activity is specifically important in pharmaceutical and environmental areas. Numerous studies have verified effective fluorescent methods to detect and image NTR activity; however, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probes for biological applications are lacking. Thus, in this study, we synthesized novel NIR probes (NIR-HCy-NO2 1–3) by introducing a nitro group to the hemicyanine skeleton to obtain fluorescence images of NTR activity. Additionally, this study was also designed to propose a different water solubility and investigate the catalytic efficiency of NTR. NIR-HCy-NO2 inherently exhibited a low fluorescence background due to the interference of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) by the nitro group. The conversion from the nitro to amine group by NTR induced a change in the absorbance spectra and lead to the intense enhancement of the fluorescence spectra. When assessing the catalytic efficiency and the limit of detection (LOD), including NTR activity imaging, it was demonstrated that NIR-HCy-NO2 1 was superior to the other two probes. Moreover, we found that NIR-HCy-NO2 1 reacted with type I mitochondrial NTR in live cell imaging. Conclusively, NIR-HCy-NO2 demonstrated a great potential for application in various NTR-related fields, including NTR activity for cell imaging in vivo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
