As industrial development and population growth continue, water pollution has become increasingly severe, particularly in rapidly industrializing regions like the area surrounding the Yopurga landfill. Ensuring water resource safety and environmental protection necessitates effective water quality monitoring and assessment. This paper explores the application of advanced machine learning technologies and the Water Quality Index (WQI) model as a comprehensive method for accurately assessing groundwater quality near the Yopurga landfill. The methodology involves selecting water quality indicators based on available data and the hydrochemical characteristics of the study area, comparing the performance of Decision Trees, Random Forest, and Xgboost algorithms in predicting water quality, and identifying the optimal algorithm to determine indicator weights. Indicators are scored using appropriate sub-index (SI) functions, and six different aggregation functions are compared to find the most suitable one. The study reveals that the Xgboost model surpasses Decision Trees and Random Forest models in water quality prediction. The top three indicator weights identified are pH, Manganese (Mn), and Nickel (Ni). The SWM model, with a 0% overestimation eclipsing rate and a 34% underestimation eclipsing rate, is chosen as the most appropriate WQI model for evaluating groundwater quality at the Yopurga landfill. According to the WQI results from the SWM aggregation function, the overall water quality in the area ranges from moderately polluted to slightly polluted. Sanitary landfilling is the predominant process for solid urban waste disposal, but it generates leachate that poses environmental, economic, and social concerns. Landfill leachate (LL) contains complex and refractory pollutants and toxic compounds that can vary depending on landfill maturity, age, and biochemical reactions, making its treatment challenging. Due to its unique characteristics and occurrence in remote locations, LL requires separate treatment from wastewater. Various conventional treatment processes involving biological, chemical, and physical processes have been used for LL treatment, but a single treatment process is insufficient to meet environmental standards. This review demonstrates that combined treatment processes are more effective and efficient for LL treatment compared to single processes. Among the various combinations, chemical–chemical and chemical–biological treatments are the most commonly used. Specifically, the integration of Fenton with adsorption and a membrane bioreactor (MBR) with nanofiltration (NF) processes shows promising results. The combined processes of MBR with NF, Fenton with adsorption, and PF with biological treatment show maximum removal efficiencies for COD, reaching 99 ± 1%, 99%, 98%, and 97%, respectively. Additionally, the combined Fenton with adsorption process and EC with SPF process enhance biodegradability as indicated by increased BOD5/COD ratios, from 0.084 to 0.82 and 0.35 to 0.75, respectively. The findings emphasize the importance of developing and implementing enhanced combined treatment processes for LL, with the aim of achieving efficient and comprehensive pollutant mineralization. Soil contamination by metallic components is an obscure, detrimental, protracted, and irreparable predicament. Dumping of waste containing heavy metals into landfills, fertilizer and pesticide application, and coal combustion results in high toxicity of metallic elements, and their continuous accumulation in soil pollutes the environment, which, in turn, poses a threat to human health. The specimens were subsequently dehydrated, processed for mineralization, and carefully examined microscopically by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), which examined their mineral substance, crystalline configuration, and chemical composition. Thirteen (13) elements were detected, and only eight (8) metals were discovered (K, Mg, Na, Ca, Al, Fe, Au, Ba), including non-metals (C, O, Cl, P) and a metalloid (Si). The concentrations of possibly toxic elements obtained showed no consistent succession, as they fluctuated across the examined sites. The Al concentration ranged from 3.78 ± 0.23 wt% to 10.23 ± 0.31 wt%, while the Fe concentration fluctuated from 4.14 ± 0.40 wt% to 13.13 ± 1.07 wt%. Na and Mg levels were present in all samples, but their availability was minimal, at less than 2.0 wt%, ranging between 1.44 ± 0.20 wt% and 0.31 ± 0.08 wt%. The concentrations of Ca and K were low in all soil samples, ranging from 0.91 ± 0.14 wt% to 5.56 ± 0.47 wt% for Ca and from 1.32 ± 0.25 wt% to 4.87 ± 0.18 wt% for K. During the investigation at the designated and control areas, it was discovered that the concentrations of potentially hazardous metals exceeded the accepted limits established by the World Health Organization (WHO) > 100 ppm. The findings provide proof of metallic contaminants in the study region, which calls for proper monitoring, management, and remedial measures of metal-tainted sites, since the residents of this locality are at a significantly elevated risk of experiencing adverse effects due to their heightened exposure to these elements. As a result of that, there is an imperative need to monitor and regulate this area regularly and appropriately. The study recommends sustainable farming practices, where farmers could use natural fertilizers and compost, as well as, the implementation of proper waste management, effective recycling techniques, and proper disposal of substances containing heavy metals as byproducts. This research identifies the productivity of landfill gas actively captured at a municipal waste landfill site with a waste mass exceeding 1 million Mg from sectors in the operational and non-operational phases, considering meteorological conditions. Based on the analysis of landfill gas, including emissions and composition (CH4, CO2, O2, and other gases), the processes occurring demonstrate the impact of the decomposition of deposited waste on the activity of the deposit. With average monthly gas emissions exceeding 960,000 m3, the average content of CH4 (30–63%) and CO2 (18–42%) and the varied content of O2 (0.3–9.8%) in individual sectors of the landfill site were significant. The statistically significant relationship between CH4, CO2, and landfill gas emissions exhibited a noticeable decrease in methane content. Despite the abandonment of waste storage, a high correlation is present between the emission level and methane content (0.59) and carbon dioxide (0.50). In the operational part of the landfill, this relationship is also statistically significant but to a lesser extent; Spearman's R-value was 0.42 for methane and 0.36 for carbon dioxide. The operational and post-operational phases of the municipal waste landfill demonstrated a noticeable impact from the amount of precipitation, relative humidity, and air temperature, on landfill gas productivity. The generally progressive decline in the activity of the waste deposit, which reflects a decreasing trend in the methane content of approximately 2% annually in the total composition of landfill gas, as well as the share below 50%, indicates the need only to utilise landfill without producing energy. With the increase in the world population and economic activity, the production of sewage sludge has grown, and its management has become an environmental problem. The most traditional method of managing sewage sludge is to dispose of it in landfills and on farmland. One way to valorize sewage sludge is to use thermochemical conversion processes to produce added-value products such as biochar, biofuels, and renewable gases. However, due to the high moisture content, thermochemical conversion using processes such as pyrolysis and traditional gasification involves multiple pre-treatment processes such as material drying. Hydrothermal thermochemical processes usually require high pressures, which pose many challenges to their application on a large scale. In this work, the advantages and disadvantages of the different existing thermochemical processes for the recovery of sewage sludge were analyzed, as well as the resulting industrial and environmental challenges. This article presents a methodology for evaluating the susceptibility of landfill areas to develop landslides by analyzing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite products. The deformation velocity of the landfills is computed through the Persistent Scatterer Method on SAR imagery. These data, combined with a deformation model based on the shallow water equations (SWE), form the foundation for a Monte Carlo experiment that extrapolates the current state of the landfill into the future. The results of this simulation are then employed to determine the probability of a landslide occurrence. In order to validate the methodology effectiveness, a case study is conducted on a landfill in Zaldibar, Spain, revealing its effectiveness in estimating the probability of landfill landslides. This innovative approach emerges as an asset in large landfill management, acting as a proactive tool for identifying high-risk sites and preventing potential landslides, ultimately safeguarding human life and the environment. In the pursuit of environmentally and economically sustainable sewage sludge ash (SSA) management methods, researchers often employ laboratory-made SSA (L-SSA) as a substitute for industrial-made SSA (I-SSA) produced in fluidized bed furnaces. To check whether L-SSA is a material that imitates I-SSA well, the fractionation of metals whose presence is a significant problem during SSA management was performed. In addition, the grain distribution, specific surface area, and textural properties of the tested materials were examined. Differences in total Pb and Hg content and mobility of Cu, Ni, Mn, and Zn were observed between I-SSA and L-SSA. Larger particle sizes of L-SSA compared to I-SSA were confirmed, while comparable textural properties and specific surface area of both types of materials were maintained. Based on the results, it was concluded that L-SSA is chemically different compared to I-SSA, and that L-SSA should not be used as a reference in research focused on the design of SSA management methods. Moreover, fractionation of metals was performed in disposed fluidized beds (FBs), which are diverted to non-hazardous waste landfills without prior analysis. Simple Summary: Wildlife has been described as a sylvatic reservoir for a multitude of pathogens. The interactions between wild birds, domestic animals, and humans in urban areas are high, so monitoring urban birds is key for the surveillance of zoonosis such as campylobacteriosis. This infection is mainly caused by thermophilic Campylobacter spp., and it is the most reported foodborne zoonosis in the European Union. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter isolates and their antimicrobial resistance pattern in urban wild birds. Results showed that 16.8% of birds were positive for Campylobacter, with 82.4% of the isolates resistant to at least one antimicrobial. The taxonomic order of individuals, main diet, age, and season of sampling were significant factors associated with Campylobacter spp. carriage. Although the prevalence of Campylobacter was low, the rate of antimicrobial-resistant isolates is worrying, so similar studies should be included in the antimicrobial resistance surveillance programs. The increasing urbanization of ecosystems has had a significant impact on wildlife over the last few years. Species that find an unlimited supply of food and shelter in urban areas have thrived under human presence. Wild birds have been identified as amplifying hosts and reservoirs of Campylobacter worldwide, but the information about its transmission and epidemiology is still limited. This study assessed the prevalence of Campylobacter in 137 urban birds admitted at a wildlife rescue center, with 18.8% of individuals showing positive. C. jejuni was the most frequent species (82.6%), followed by C. coli and C. lari (4.3% each). The order Passeriformes (33.3%) showed significant higher presence of Campylobacter when compared to orders Columbiformes (0%) and Ciconiiformes (17.6%), as well as in samples collected during the summer season (31.9%), from omnivorous species (36.8%) and young individuals (26.8%). Globally, Campylobacter displayed a remarkable resistance to ciprofloxacin (70.6%), tetracycline (64.7%), and nalidixic acid (52.9%). In contrast, resistance to streptomycin was low (5.8%), and all the isolates showed susceptibility to erythromycin and gentamycin. The results underline the importance of urban birds as reservoirs of thermophilic antimicrobial-resistant Campylobacter and contribute to enhancing the knowledge of its distribution in urban and peri-urban ecosystems. The aim of this case study was the evaluation of the selected metals' concentration, potential toxic compound identification, cytotoxicity analysis, estimation of the airborne dust concentration, biodiversity, and number of microorganisms in the environment (leachate, soil, air) of the biggest uncontrolled post-industrial landfills in Poland. Based on the results obtained, preliminary solutions for the future management of post-industrial objects that have become an uncontrolled landfill were indicated. In the air, the PM1 fraction dominated, constituting 78.1–98.2% of the particulate matter. Bacterial counts were in the ranges of 9.33 × 101–3.21 × 103 CFU m−3 (air), 1.87 × 105–2.30 × 106 CFU mL−1 (leachates), and 8.33 × 104–2.69 × 106 CFU g−1 (soil). In the air, the predominant bacteria were Cellulosimicrobium and Stenotrophomonas. The predominant fungi were Mycosphaerella, Cladosporium, and Chalastospora. The main bacteria in the leachates and soils were Acinetobacter, Mortierella, Proteiniclasticum, Caloramator, and Shewanella. The main fungi in the leachates and soils were Lindtneria. Elevated concentrations of Pb, Zn, and Hg were detected. The soil showed the most pronounced cytotoxic potential, with rates of 36.55%, 63.08%, and 100% for the A-549, Caco-2, and A-549 cell lines. Nine compounds were identified which may be responsible for this cytotoxic effect, including 2,4,8-trimethylquinoline, benzo(f)quinoline, and 1-(m-tolyl)isoquinoline. Earthquakes impact the stability of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, especially those with high water levels, and may further lead to disastrous landslides. Numerical analysis offers an efficient and cost-effective way to study the seismic stability of a landfill. In this study, the finite difference nonlinear analysis method was employed to meticulously evaluate the dynamic response of landfills under varying water levels and seismic intensities. The analysis was guided by the seismic instability and centrifuge test outcomes. The rationality of the computational model was verified by examining the responses of acceleration and pore pressure. Subsequently, the time history curve of the dynamic safety factor was derived from the dynamic response of landfills. The results indicated that a landfill was more susceptible to large earthquake effects, and its stability decreased as the water level rose, with the safety factor decreasing to a critical point under the coupling effect of strong earthquakes and high water levels. In contrast, the stability of the landfill with low water levels was good under weak earthquake conditions, with only a slight decrease in the safety factor observed. The seismic stability of a landfill was significantly influenced by both accumulative deformation and negative excess pore pressure. A certain degree of hysteresis in the landfill's instability was also observed compared to the earthquake loading process. The time history curve of the safety factor can offer a comprehensive insight into seismic stability under diverse conditions. The presence of fermentative hotspots in municipal waste dumps has been reported for several decades, but no study has focused on their size and shape. The uncontrolled landfill of Soub Sekt, covering an area of about 8 hectares in the Tadla plain in Morocco, is the source of a permanent pollution plume in the groundwater, detected by self-potential (SP) measurements. The study aims to detect and characterize these hotspots as well as the leachates that form within them. These hotspots are typically circular and smaller than 3 m in size, and they are concentrated within recent waste deposits. Intense electron transfer activities, particularly during redox reactions leading to metal solubilization, result in very low SP values (down to −60 mV), facilitating their detection. Several successive field campaigns suggest that they are active for 2–3 weeks. Due to the low permeability of the soils, highly mineralized leachates (average Electrical Conductivity 45 mS cm−1) rich in organic ions accumulate on the soil surface at the base of the waste windrows. There, they evolve by concentration due to evaporation and oxidation due to slow diffusion of atmospheric O2. Despite the small size of the hotspots generating the leachates, the accumulation of leachates in ponds and the low soil permeability limits the percolation rate, resulting in moderate but permanent groundwater pollution. Landfills have the potential to contribute to mercury (Hg) pollution, due to the burial of waste containing mercury. Mercury from domestic waste can enter the soil surrounding landfills through surface runoff and leachate. In this study, we assessed the levels of Hg in the paddy soil around the Nam Son landfill, the largest landfill in the North of Vietnam, during both rainy (September 2021) and dry (January 2022) seasons. The concentration of Hg was in the range of 20.5 to 79.7 μg/kg dry w.t. in Bac Son and Nam Son, and 16.6 μg/kg dry w.t. at a higher reference site. In most of the samples, the rainy season showed higher Hg concentrations than the dry season. Soil samples taken closer to the landfill exhibited higher levels of Hg contamination compared to those in more distant paddy areas, suggesting a decreasing trend of Hg concentration as one moves away from the pollution source. Additionally, Hg concentration was found to decrease vertically from the surface, with the higher value observed in the surface layer (0–5 cm), and the lower in the bottom layer (20–25 cm). The geo-accumulation index showed that all the sampling points were moderately to heavily polluted, indicating that Hg was lost from the waste source in the landfill. This study provides valuable insights into the spatial and vertical distribution of Hg pollution in the topsoil and highlights the importance of managing and assessing the risks of Hg-containing waste. Poland is highly likely, as per a European Commission report, to fall short of meeting the 2025 targets related to the preparation for re-use and recycling of municipal waste and packaging waste. The risk of not meeting the municipal waste recycling targets stands at 27%, while for packaging waste, it is estimated at 30%. Recycling rates play a pivotal role in gauging the efficiency of waste management systems, as well as in monitoring progress toward a circular economy. Taking into account the considerable likelihood of Poland not achieving the recycling targets, the authors of the paper found it imperative to identify the risk factors associated with Poland's failure to meet the European Commission's recycling and landfill targets within the waste-to-energy context. Additionally, they sought to evaluate the potential for the development of the waste-to-energy concept in Poland. The research objectives were fulfilled through the literature review method. By employing the classification of factors outlined in a SWOT analysis, the authors highlighted which of the identified risk factors could or should be considered strengths or weaknesses, opportunities or threats to the Polish recycling process. Mapping out future courses of action will enable decision-makers in Poland to address the weaknesses in recycling, capitalize on opportunities arising from the socio-economic situation in Poland, and formulate plans to mitigate the identified threats. This article presents the results of the study of the morphological composition of municipal solid waste (MSW) from the landfill of Atyrau city, and the waste's energy characteristics and presence of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi and viruses. This study was carried out under a government order to determine the feasibility of recycling accumulated and incoming waste into electricity and its hazard to the environment and the workers involved in handling it. At the moment, there is no MSW recycling in Kazakhstan, which has led to the accumulation of more than 125 million tons of waste with an annual increase of 5 million tons. The research included four major cities (Almaty, Shymkent, Atyrau and Astana), which were selected not only on the basis of population, but also because the cities were located in different climatic zones. Samples were collected at the city landfills: 10 samples with an average distance of 100 m from each other were collected to provide a maximum coverage of both recently received waste and long-time stored waste. The research showed that neither climatic conditions nor the population size had a significant impact on MSW density, the values of which ranged from 120.1 kg/m3 to 145.4 kg/m3, as this indicator directly depends on the quality of life. The mass of the combustible fraction ranged from 39.41% to 54.62% and was mainly represented by plastic, textile and paper waste. The average value for the four cities was 50.30%. The higher calorific value fell in the range of 24.22–30.49 MJ/kg, with an average value of 26.71 MJ/kg. Microbiological studies showed little difference in average composition regardless of climatic conditions. Thus, no sharp differences in MSW composition, its energy characteristics and microbiological composition were found. The results of this study may be useful for optimising MSW recycling and disposal processes, as well as for developing measures to reduce their negative impact on the environment and human health. With over 9 million additional tons of plastic waste entering the oceans each year, 165 million tons of plastic waste have already defiled our oceans. Considering that just 9% of plastic is recycled, the rest of the waste contaminates the environment or is dumped in landfills, where it can take up to 500 years to degrade while releasing hazardous chemicals into the soil. The bioplastics prepared in this study were obtained from tapioca and sweet potato using plasticizers like glycerol in various combinations. The biodegradability and mechanical and physical properties were analyzed. The tensile strengths of the prepared bioplastic films were 4.25 and 2.35 MPa with elongation at break (EAB) of 39.5% and 25.4% for tapioca and sweet potato bioplastics, respectively. The biodegradability of the films was examined, and thus, the obtained bioplastics in the study are shown to be a good alternative to the existing plastics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Landfill leachate (LLCH) disposal poses challenges due to high pollutant concentrations. This study investigates the use of biochar (BC) derived from wheat straw for nitrogen content reduction. Laboratory experiments evaluated BC's adsorption capacity (qm) for nitrogen removal from ammonium chloride solution (NH4Cl) and LLCH, along with testing isotherm models. The results demonstrated that BC was more efficient (95.08%) than commercial activated carbon AC (93.11%), the blank, in adsorbing nitrogen from NH4Cl. This superior performance of BC may be attributed to its higher carbon content (57.74%) observed through elemental analysis. Lower results for BC/LLCH may be due to LLCH's complex chemical matrix. The Langmuir isotherm model best described BC/NH4Cl adsorption (qm = 0.5738 mg/g). The AC/NH4Cl data also fitted into the Langmuir (R2 ˃ 0.9) with a qm of 0.9469 mg/g, and 26.667 mg/g (R2 ˂ 0.9) was obtained for BC/LLCH; the BC/LLCH also gave higher qm (R2 ˃ 0.9) using the Jovanovich model (which also follows Langmuir's assumptions). The mean energy of the adsorption values estimated for the AC/NH4Cl, BC/NH4Cl, and BC/LLCH processes were 353.55, 353.55, and 223.61 kJ/mol, respectively, suggesting that they are all chemisorption processes and ion exchange influenced their adsorption processes. The Freundlich constant (1/n) value suggests average adsorption for BC/LLCH. The BC/LLCH data followed the Harkins–Jura model (R2: 0.9992), suggesting multilayered adsorption (or mesopore filling). In conclusion, biochar derived from wheat straw shows promising potential for landfill leachate remediation, offering efficient nitrogen removal capabilities and demonstrating compatibility with various adsorption models. This research also lays the groundwork for further exploration of other biochar-based materials in addressing environmental challenges associated with landfill leachate contamination. The main objective of this manuscript is to collect, classify, and compile all available data about secondary mineral sources of REEs in the South-Eastern Europe (SEE). The material is generated from the extracting and processing sector, that might be possibly transformed in the business process becoming an important raw material for another industry. The management inventory guide will strengthen communication and dissemination efforts and simultaneously contribute to Europe's self-sufficiency and support transitioning to green and digital technology. Identification of the knowledge gaps associated with secondary sources of REEs in SEE will contribute to connections between all partners being involved at the beginning, during the lifetime of products and at the end of the life cycle, represented with deposit owners, technology developers and potential processors, producers, and potential users. At the investigated area it was found 1835 individual landfills, most of them belonging to waste rocks. The total quantity of all material in SRM is about 3.2 billion tons on an area of about 100 km2. The largest 95 individual landfills were selected as potential prospective landfills, containing about 1600 million tons of material. The estimated total potential of REEs (ΣREE) is more than 200 Kt. The largest quantities are found in landfills for coal fly ash and Cu flotation, which correspond to more than 80% of the ΣREE. Most of the promising sites are located in Serbia and North Macedonia. It has been calculated that the valorisation potential and perspectivity of REE2O3 is about 32.5 billion USD (prices from December 2022). According to the average concentrations of REEs, the most prospective are the red mud dams but their total volume is limited compared to massive amounts of coal fly ash landfills. There is a notable difference between garbage pile foundations and general site foundations; due to their uneven particles, complex structure, and diverse composition, there are relatively few cases that can be used for reference. In this study, with the aim of renovating a landfill in Shenzhen, bearing-layer reinforcements were introduced in the overlying road of a garbage heap dominated by construction waste. The bearing capacity of a single-pile composite foundation was studied through a core-pulling test of high-pressure jet-grouting piles, a static load test of the bearing capacity of the single-pile composite foundation, design estimation, and numerical analysis. The results show that the obtained eigenvalue of the design estimate was 267.8 kPa, and the eigenvalue of the field test was between 182.58 kPa and 196.89 kPa, meeting the design requirement of an eigenvalue of no less than 175 kPa. The bearing capacity of the composite foundation of the single jet-grouting pile was analyzed using the ABAQUS numerical simulation software; the characteristic value of the bearing capacity of the single-pile composite foundation was 186.01 kPa, and the variation trend of its settlement–load curve was the same as that of the field test results, which met the design requirements. In the past, due to improper sludge treatment technology and the absence of treatment standards, some municipal sludge was simply dewatered and then sent to landfills, occupying a significant amount of land and posing a serious threat of secondary pollution. To free up land in the landfill area for the expansion of a large-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Shanghai, in this study, we conducted comprehensive pilot research on the entire chain of landfill sludge reprocessing and resource utilization. Both the combination of polyferric silicate sulfate (PFSS) and polyetheramine (PEA) and the combination of polyaluminum silicate (PAS) and polyetheramine (PEA) were used for sludge conditioning before dewatering, resulting in dewatered sludge with approximately 60% moisture content. The combined process involved coagulation and sedimentation, flocculation, and oxidation to treat the leachate generated during dewatering. The treatment process successfully met the specified water pollutant discharge concentration limits for the leachate, with the concentration of ammonia nitrogen in the effluent as low as 15.6 mg/L. Co-incineration in a power plant and modification were applied to stabilize and harmlessly dispose of the dewatered sludge. The coal-generating system ran stably, and no obvious problems were observed in the blending process. In the modification experiment, adding 5% to 7% of the solidifying agent increased the sludge bearing ratio by 53% and 57%, respectively. This process effectively reduced levels of fecal coliforms and heavy metals in the sludge but had a less noticeable effect on organic matter content. The modified sludge proved suitable for use as backfill material in construction areas without requirements for organic matter. Nitrogen removal through heterotrophic nitrification–aerobic denitrification (HN–AD) has been acknowledged as one of the most efficient and cost-effective nitrogen removal processes. This study involved the isolation of a novel HN–AD bacterium (Rhodococcus sp. S2) from landfill leachate. Rhodococcus sp. S2 exhibited high nitrogen removal performance under aerobic conditions without the accumulation of nitrite as an intermediate. The maximum removal efficiencies for NH4+-N, NO2−-N, and NO3−-N were found to be 99.97 ± 0.3%, 99.79 ± 0.14%, and 83.53 ± 0.31%, respectively. Additionally, Rhodococcus sp. S2 demonstrated simultaneous nitrifying and denitrifying capabilities and showed a preference for utilizing NH4+-N in mixed nitrogen sources. The optimal nitrogen removal conditions for Rhodococcus sp. S2 were as follows: sodium acetate as a carbon source, a C/N ratio of 16, a shaking speed of 200 rpm, a pH of 9, and a temperature of 35 °C. Genome sequencing results revealed the presence of nitrate reductases (NarG), nitrate oxidoreductase (NxrA), and nitrite reductase (NirBD) in Rhodococcus sp. S2, providing further evidence of its HN–AD capability. In treating raw wastewater under the aforementioned experimental conditions, S2 achieved a maximum TN removal efficiency of 57.16 ± 0.52% with the addition of sodium acetate as a carbon source. The circular economy and efficient use of resources gained importance in the context of sustainable development. The paper aims to evaluate the development of landfilling in Slovakia. The next goal is to assess the trend in compared with the EU's situation. The presented research presents a continuation of previous research in the area of waste recycling in Slovakia, pointing to the waste and landfilling, which is deserving of analysis from a long-term perspective. The research is carried out via data collection at the EU level by recording continuously published values. The paper's results are processed in statistical software. Considering regional development, landfilling in Slovakia is followed up according to the geographical units of the entire country. The results shown here show that a higher recycling capacity is required and Slovakia should decrease its level of landfill. Groundwater quality assessment in the region of potential pollution sources can be performed through the use of index-based methods. The aim of this paper was to present the results of the groundwater quality assessment in the region of the zinc smelter in Miasteczko Śląskie (southern Poland) for the Quaternary aquifer based on monitoring data from 2000, 2011, and 2022. The following parameters were used in the analysis: Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn. Three indices were calculated, i.e., the landfill water pollution index (LWPI), heavy metal pollution index (HPI), and metal index (MI). The values of the indicators suggest that in the described study area, there are waters that are under the strong influence of the zinc smelter infrastructure and landfills. The highest values obtained are about 17 for LWPI, about 66 for HPI, and about 133 for MI. These values indicate significant anthropogenic pollution of the groundwater of the Quaternary aquifer in the study area. Taking into account the values obtained for all three indices, it can be concluded that the HPI indicator is the least reliable due to the need to select two limit values (background and ideal content in waters for each of the parameters), which would suggest that in some cases, waters are not very contaminated. The other two indices show similarities (mainly in their spatial distribution), and only the choice of parameters determines which of the indices should be used. A comparison of the results of local groundwater quality monitoring with the results of the calculated indices indicate that the values of the calculated MI indices are closest to the actual water quality status. The modified primary compression index (MPCI) of municipal solid waste (MSW) is an important parameter for describing the primary consolidation settlement of MSW. It is beneficial to calculate the settlement and storage capacity of landfills accurately by calculating the MPCI of MSW correctly. This article studies the primary consolidation compression characteristics and influencing factors of MSW through a consolidation experiment considering temperature control. The experimental results show that the MPCI increases with an increase in temperature, decreases with an increase in dry weight, increases with an increase in water content, and increases with an increase in organic matter content. According to the above findings, an MPCI regression fitting model was established. During adaptation to waters that are rich in xenobiotics, biological systems pass through multiple stages. The first one is related to the restructuring of communities, pronounced destruction of the structure, and multiplication of active biodegradants. The purpose of the present research was to describe the microbiome restructuring that occurs during the adaptation stage in landfill leachate treatment. In a model SBR (sequencing batch reactor), a 21-day purification process of landfill leachate was simulated. Wastewater was fed in increasing concentrations. When undiluted leachate entered, the activated sludge structure disintegrated (Sludge Volume Index—4.6 mL/g). The Chemical Oxygen Demand and ammonium nitrogen concentration remained at high values in the influent (2321.11 mgO2/L and 573.20 mg/L, respectively). A significant amount of free-swimming cells was found, and the number of aerobic heterotrophs and bacteria of the genera Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter increased by up to 125 times. The Azoarcus-Thauera cluster (27%) and Pseudomonas spp. (16%) were registered as the main bacterial groups in the activated sludge. In the changed structure of the microbial community, Gammaproteobacteria, family Rhizobiaceae, class Saccharimonadia were predominantly represented. Among the suspended bacteria, Microbactericeae and Burkholderiaceae, which are known for their ability to degrade xenobiotics, were present in larger quantities. The enzymological analysis demonstrated that the ortho-pathway of cleavage of aromatic structures was active in the community. The described changes in the leachate-purifying microbial community appear to be destructive at the technological level. This article is focused on analyzing roof structure from environmental impact indicators and circularity point of view. The life cycle analysis of the roof structure includes the product phase, transport from the factory gate to the site, operational energy and operational water phase, and an end-of-life phase. Three end-of-life scenarios for built-in materials are designed to observe the reduction in environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of the structure. Scenario 1 mainly considers waste incineration, which accounts for almost 77% of the end-of-life phase. In addition, landfilling (15.4%) and recycling (7.7%) are considered. In scenario 2, landfilling accounts for 38.5% and incineration also accounts for 38.5%. Recycling (15.4%) and downcycling (7.6%) are also considered. In scenario 3, recycling and reuse represent 46.1% and 38.5%, respectively. Incineration (7.7%) and downcycling (7.7%) are also considered. The lifetime considered is 50 years and the functional unit is 1 m2. One-Click LCA software was used for the analysis. Results for GWP-fossil are 415 kgCO2eq, 381 kgCO2qe and 362 kgCO2eq for scenarios 1, 2 and 3. The circulation score of the roof composition for three scenario is determined to be 2%, 16% and 36%. In this paper, the feasibility of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-modified clay as a landfill liner material is investigated. Experiments were conducted on the modified clay with 0.5%, 1%, and 2% MWCNTs. The effects of the MWCNTs on the compaction characteristics, permeability coefficient, stress–strain curve, peak deviation stress, shear strength parameters (internal friction angle and cohesion), microstructures, and adsorption performance of the clay were analyzed. The results showed that the optimum moisture content (OMC) increased from 16.15% to 18.89%, and the maximum dry density (MDD) decreased from 1.79 g/cm3 to 1.72 g/cm3 with the increase in MWCNTs. The permeability coefficients firstly fell and then gradually rose as the MWCNTs increased; the minimum permeability coefficient was 8.62 × 10−9 cm/s. The MWCNTs can also effectively increase the peak deviation stress of the clay, and at the maximum level, the peak deviation stress was increased by 286%. SEM images were processed using the Pore and Crack Analysis System (PCAS), and the results showed that the appropriate amount of MWCNTs could fill the pores and strengthen the clay structure. The effect of the MWCNT-modified clay on the adsorption performance of common heavy metal ions Cd2+, Mn2+ and Cu2+ in landfill leachate was analyzed by batch adsorption tests. The maximum adsorption capacities (Qmax) of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Mn2+ in the 2% MWCNT-modified clay were, respectively, 41.67 mg/g, 18.69 mg/g, and 4.97 mg/g. Compared with the clay samples without MWCNTs, the adsorption properties of Cu2+, Cd2+, and Mn2+ were increased by 228%, 124%, and 202%, respectively. Sludge, due to its form and significant moisture and zinc content, is the most problematic metallurgical waste. Near the site of a disused steelworks plant in Krakow (Poland) there is an estimated 5 million tonnes of landfill sludge that consists of more than 90% iron and other metal oxides. There is a global tendency to switch steel production towards carbonless technologies, which is why the presented work investigates the possibility of simultaneous waste liquidation and recovery of valuable metals with the use of hydrogenous reduction. Direct reduced iron (DRI) production was selected as the targeted technology, so the sludge was lumped and bound with cement or CaO addition. The obtained lumps were reduced in a hydrogenous atmosphere with gradual heating to 950 °C, after which their phase structure was analyzed and elemental analysis was performed. It was found that zinc evaporated during the experiment, but mostly thanks to the carbon contained in the sludge. The increased addition of binder to the sludge resulted in the enhancement of the lumps, but also limited the reduction range. The products obtained were mostly wustite and less pure iron. Taking into account the degree of reduction and the lumps' compression strength, the best binding was achieved by adding cement at a quantity of 5% mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The management of the increasing volume of municipal solid waste is an essential activity for the health of the environment and of the population. The organic matter of waste deposited in landfills is subject to aerobic decomposition processes, bacterial aerobic decomposition, and chemical reactions that release large amounts of heat, biogas, and leachates at high temperatures. The control of these by-products enables their recovery, utilization, and treatment for energy use, avoiding emissions to the environment. UAVs with low-cost thermal sensors are a tool that enables the representation of temperature distributions for the thermal control of landfills. This study focuses on the development of a methodology for the generation of 3D thermal models through the projection of TIR image information onto a 3D model generated from RGB images and the identification of thermal anomalies by means of photointerpretation and GIS analysis. The novel methodological approach was implemented at the Meruelo landfill for validation. At the facility, a 4D model (X,Y,Z-temperature) and a 13.8 cm/px GSD thermal orthoimage were generated with a thermal accuracy of 1.63 °C, which enabled the identification of at least five areas of high temperatures associated with possible biogas emissions, decomposing organic matter, or underground fires, which were verified by on-site measurements and photointerpretation of the RGB model, in order to take and assess specific corrective measures. The leachate discharges generated in sanitary landfills contain many pollutants that are harmful to the environment; treatments are scarce and should be carried out better. The use of coagulation–flocculation processes has been one of the most widely used, but due to the complexity of the characterization of the leachate, the dosing strategy of coagulants and biopolymers needs to be clarified. Therefore, the present study was carried out to determine the doses of coagulants and biopolymers suitable for coagulation–flocculation processes in the treatment of leachates using computational models of machine learning techniques such as artificial neural networks (ANNs); these allow for decreasing the operations of the tests of jars in the laboratory, optimizing resources. Through laboratory experimentation, there are real results of the effectiveness of applying biopolymers in leachate treatments at different concentration levels. The laboratory results were taken as input variables for the algorithms used; after the validation and calibration process, we proceeded to estimate predicted data with the computational model, obtaining predictions of optimal doses for treatment with high statistical adjustment indicators. It is verified that the applied coagulation–flocculation treatments reduce the turbidity values in the leachate and contaminants associated with suspended solids. Landfills pose global challenges, notably in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, pollution release, and extensive land occupation. The transformative practice of landfill mining has redefined these sites as valuable resource reservoirs. The fine fraction (FF), often constituting the majority of excavated waste, is currently underutilized but holds the potential for biocover construction to mitigate methane emissions. This study comprehensively analyzes the FF from the Kuršenai landfill, collecting samples from various depths, reaching up to 10.5 m. The most suitable layers for biocover construction were determined based on basic physical and chemical parameters, along with the concentration of heavy metals and microplastics. The findings unveil significant parameter variations across different depths. Moderate–high correlations (ranging from 0.5 to 0.84) between several parameters were observed. The layer at a depth of 4.5–6 m emerged as the most suitable for biocover construction. However, this layer is characterized by elevated microplastic concentrations (30,208 ± 273 particles/kg), posing a challenge for its use in biocovers as microplastics can be released into the environment during FF extraction and biocover construction. Additionally, microplastics become finer with depth, increasing the associated risks. The accurate classification of landfill waste diversion plays a critical role in efficient waste management practices. Traditional approaches, such as visual inspection, weighing and volume measurement, and manual sorting, have been widely used but suffer from subjectivity, scalability, and labour requirements. In contrast, machine learning approaches, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), have emerged as powerful deep learning models for waste detection and classification. This paper analyses VGG-16, InceptionResNetV2, DenseNet121, Inception V3, and MobileNetV2 models to classify real-life waste when trained on pristine and unadulterated materials, versus samples collected at a landfill site. When training on DiversionNet, the unadulterated material dataset with labels required for landfill modelling, classification accuracy was limited to 49.69% in the real environment. Using real-world samples in the newly formed RealWaste dataset showed that practical applications for deep learning in waste classification are possible, with Inception V3 reaching 89.19% classification accuracy on the full spectrum of labels required for accurate modelling. The construction industry is among the most prominent contributors to global resource consumption, waste production, and greenhouse gas emissions. A pivotal step toward mitigating these sectoral impacts lies in the adoption of a circular production and consumption system. The use of alternative waste materials can mitigate landfill accumulation and the associated detrimental environmental effects. To highlight unconventional materials, this study began with a bibliometric assessment via a bibliography analyzis software called "Bibliometrix" (version 4.1.3). The outputs from the analyzis can assist in identifying research trends, gaps in literature and benchmark research performance. The search engine used for sourcing publications was Scopus, using the main criteria as "Waste materials used in building and construction". The time-period analysed was from 2013 to 2023. The results included publications obtained in journal articles, book chapters and conference proceedings. The assessment reviewed 6238 documents from 1482 sources. The results revealed an array of waste materials; however, rubber, textiles, and ceramics had a significant reduction in research attention. Rubber waste presents promising opportunities in civil concrete construction methods. The preparatory steps of textile fibres in composite materials are frequently disregarded, resulting in structural issues for the end-product. Obstacles persist in ceramic technology due to the absence of transparency, primarily because industry entities closely safeguard proprietary information. While sustainability research often emphasizes emissions, practical trials commonly revolve around integrating materials into current systems. A more comprehensive approach, contemplating the complete lifecycle of materials, could provide deeper insights into fostering sustainable construction practices. Ground- and drone-based surface emission monitoring (SEM) campaigns were performed at two municipal solid waste landfills, during the same week as mobile tracer correlation method (TCM) testing was used to measure the total methane emissions from the same landfills. The G-SEM and the D-SEM data, along with wind data, were used as input into an inverse modeling approach combined with an optimization-based methane emission estimation method (implemented in a tool called SEM2Flux). This approach involves the use of backward dispersion modeling to estimate the whole-site methane emissions from a given landfill and the identification of locations and emission rates of major leaks. SEM2Flux is designed to exploit the measured surface methane concentration concurrently with wind data and tackle two problems: (1) inferring the estimates of methane rates from individual landfills, and (2) identifying the likely locations of the main emission sources. SEM2Flux results were also compared with emission estimates obtained using TCM. In Landfill B, the average TCM-measured methane emissions was 1178 Kg/h, with a standard deviation of 271 Kg/h. In Landfill C, the average TCM-measured emission rate was 601 Kg/h, with a standard deviation of 292 Kg/h. For both landfills, the D-SEM data yielded statistically similar estimates of methane emissions as the TCM-measured emissions. On the other hand, the G-SEM data yielded comparable estimates of emissions to TCM-measured emissions only for Landfill C, where the D-SEM and G-SEM data were statistically not different. The results of this study showcase the ability of this method using surface concentrations to provide a rapid and simple estimation of fugitive methane emissions from landfills. The global surge in urbanization and population growth has led to a significant increase in municipal solid waste generation, posing a considerable challenge in identifying suitable landfill sites. This study proposes a novel framework that enhances landfill site monitoring and assessment by combining GIS-based hierarchical analytical processes with a fuzzy inference system (FIS). The study employs a systematic approach involving phases such as feature selection, spatial analysis, criteria weighting, FIS building, and a case study conducted in São Paulo State, Brazil. Simple Summary: Food availability plays a significant role in modulating populations, especially in species relying on human-generated food sources like landfills. Sudden changes in food access can negatively impact vital parameters such as survival. For long-lived scavenger species, understanding how different age groups respond to these changes is essential since landfills are condemned to be closed. We studied the response in terms of apparent survival of griffon vultures to a decline in landfill organic matter after a waste treatment center became operational. The proportion of transients increased in all age groups. Survival dropped in juveniles and adult residents but increased in immature residents. These findings suggest that vultures permanently emigrated at higher rates due to intensified competition after the reduction in food. Intriguingly, immature resident vultures showed resilience, indicating the presence of high-quality individuals despite the food scarcity. The reasons behind reduced survival in adult residents during the final four study years remain unclear but are potentially linked to non-natural mortality. This research highlights the challenges facing scavengers as European landfill sites close, thereby stressing the need for food scarcity studies and timely conservation measures. Food availability shapes demographic parameters and population dynamics. Certain species have adapted to predictable anthropogenic food resources like landfills. However, abrupt shifts in food availability can negatively impact such populations. While changes in survival are expected, the age-related effects remain poorly understood, particularly in long-lived scavenger species. We investigated the age-specific demographic response of a Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) population to a reduction in organic matter in a landfill and analyzed apparent survival and the probability of transience after initial capture using a Bayesian Cormack-Jolly-Seber model on data from 2012–2022. The proportion of transients among newly captured immatures and adults increased after the reduction in food. Juvenile apparent survival declined, increased in immature residents, and decreased in adult residents. These results suggest that there was a greater likelihood of permanent emigration due to intensified intraspecific competition following the reduction in food. Interestingly, resident immatures showed the opposite trend, suggesting the persistence of high-quality individuals despite the food scarcity. Although the reasons behind the reduced apparent survival of resident adults in the final four years of the study remain unclear, non-natural mortality potentially plays a part. In Europe landfill closure regulations are being implemented and pose a threat to avian scavenger populations, which underlines the need for research on food scarcity scenarios and proper conservation measures. Antimony (Sb) is a harmful contaminant posing a risk to the environment and human health. Antimony-containing industrial wastewater often contains sulfate; therefore, it is suitable to apply sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) to remove Sb from such water. SRB anaerobically reduce sulfate to sulfide. Sb(V) is then reduced to Sb(III) by sulfide to produce an antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3) precipitate. This wastewater often exhibits a high salinity, which inhibits biological reactions. This study aimed to isolate and characterize a halotolerant bacterium capable of removing Sb from wastewater. A Desulfovibrio sp. strain was isolated from a mixed bacterial culture derived from a leachate sample from the Nam Son landfill in Vietnam. The isolated strain, NSLLH1b, removed 86% of the 50 mg/L of Sb(V) in 3 days at 180 mg/L of sulfate and 360 mg-C/L of lactate, at a pH of 7.0 and at 28 °C. It anaerobically removed >80% of the Sb(V) at 12.5–100 mg/L in 14 days at initial concentrations of >100 mg/L of sulfate, >250 mg-CL of lactate, and 0.2–15 g/L of NaCl, and a pH of 5–8, resulting in orange precipitation. An analysis using scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that the precipitation consisted mainly of Sb and sulfur, supposedly as Sb2S3. Remediation and preparation for development is a crucial aspect of the valorization of post-mining areas. This study is focused on technologies devoted to the cement stabilization of post-industrial waste and petroleum contaminated soils. Two case studies are presented. Case 1 is based on the stabilization works of waste from a closed chemical plant in order to turn it into an engineered landfill. The results form the basis for numerical studies of slope stability. The shorter case 2 is based on the laboratory testing of a soil–cement composite with regard to petroleum contamination and the application of active carbon to neutralize it in the course of deep soil mixing. Both cases, due to the use of slag cement, are not considered to be sustainable (due to a relatively high carbon footprint), but they represent current geotechnical practice and form a reference for a wide range of applications. Both cases show the positive impact of stabilization by means of the addition of a hydraulic binder. The effect of soil improvement is measurable in terms of the stability factor of landfill slopes. The effect of active charcoal addition seems to be a valuable improvement to standard deep soil mixing technology in the case of contaminated soil. The presented results, despite their local importance related to the cases under scrutiny, have an important educational and scientific value for the energy sector, where contaminated sites need to be valorized. Limited information is available in the literature regarding the energy consumption and the greenhouse gases emitted during landfill leachates treatment. A full-scale landfill leachates treatment system that included primary sedimentation, biological treatment in sequencing batch reactors, reverse osmosis and mechanical vapor recompression evaporation was monitored and evaluated for the removal of major pollutants, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Samples were taken during a period of two years from different points of the system, while the actual power consumption was calculated considering the available mechanical equipment and the hours of operation. The quantities of greenhouse gases emitted were estimated using appropriate equations and based on the operational characteristics of the system. According to chemical analyses, biological treatment resulted in partial removal of COD and total nitrogen, while the removal of BOD5 and NH4-N was significant, reaching 90 and 98%, respectively. Use of reverse osmosis increased the removal of all pollutants, satisfying the requirements of the legislation on wastewater discharge into the environment. Power consumption was calculated to be 35.3 KWhr per m3 of treated leachate, while mechanical vapor recompression evaporation was responsible for 60.5% of the total energy required. The contribution of other processes to energy consumption was as follows, in decreasing order: sequencing batch reactors > reverse osmosis > primary treatment. The roots blower vacuum pump used for mechanical vapor recompression evaporation, and the blowers providing air to the sequencing batch reactors, were the most energy-intensive pieces of apparatus, contributing 44.2% and 11.3% of the required energy, respectively. The quantity of greenhouse gases emitted was estimated to be 27.7 Kg CO2eq per m3 of treated leachates. Among the different processes used, biological treatment and mechanical vapor recompression evaporation contributed to 45.7% and 44.1% of the total emissions, respectively. The findings of this study reveal that an integrated landfill leachate treatment system that combines biological treatment and reverse osmosis can assure the protection of the aquatic environment by producing high-quality effluent; however, further research should be conducted regarding the sustainable management of reverse osmosis concentrate. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are bioaccumulative and widely distributed persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Understanding the distribution of and ecological risks posed by PFASs is critical, particularly for PFAS emissions and accumulation from a common urban pollution source. The transformation characteristics and ecological risks of PFASs from a typical aging municipal landfill leachate were systematically monitored and assessed over five years in this study. The results showed that the total PFAS concentrations (ΣPFASs) in the rivers were between 26.4 and 464.3 ng/L, whereas in sediment, ΣPFASs ranged from 9.5 to 58.5 ng/g (w/w). The presence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the most prominent PFAS in both water (39.4–152.3 ng/L) and sediment (1.1–56.1 ng/g). In a five-year monitoring study, the concentration of PFASs in the aging landfill decreased by 23.3%, with higher mean concentrations observed during summer (307.6 ng/L) compared to winter (250.4 ng/L). As for the pollution distribution, the suspended particulate matter–water partition coefficient (log Kd) of carboxylic acid (PFCAs) and perfluoroalkane sulfonic acids (PFSAs) ranged from 1.53 to 2.65, and from 1.77 to 2.82, respectively. PFSAs and long-chain PFCAs exhibited a greater propensity for sediment association compared to short-chain PFCAs. An ecological risk assessment of four typical PFASs, PFOA, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS), utilizing the hazard quotient method revealed that the rivers surrounding the typical aging landfill exhibited a low contamination risk for PFOA, while no ecological risks were associated with the other three FPASs. This study contributes to an enhanced comprehension of the occurrence, distribution, and risk of PFASs in the rivers in rivers and sediment surrounding a typical aging landfill site in China, thereby providing crucial reference information for ensuring water quality safety. The leachate generated from a landfill can cause significant harm to the environment and human health, so it must be treated before being discharged. A biochemical method is effective to treat the landfill leachate, but it requires a physicochemical pretreatment to help reduce the organic load and improve the biodegradability of the landfill leachate. In this work, hydrodynamic cavitation was used to pretreat the landfill leachate due to it being cost-effective, without additional chemicals, and environmentally friendly. The pretreatment experiments were conducted under an inlet pressure of 0.4 MPa and a basic pH. The influence of operating parameters such as the orifice opening rate, the arrangement of orifices, and the reaction time on the chemical oxygen demand, ammonium nitrogen, and biochemical oxygen demand removal in landfill leachate was studied, and the energy efficiency was evaluated. The results showed that under the above conditions, the removal rate for the chemical oxygen demand of the orifice plate with an annular orifice arrangement was better than that of the orifice plate with a radiation orifice arrangement, and the orifice plate with an orifice opening rate of 0.0417 had the best effectiveness. The energy efficiency under these two optimization conditions was also the highest. When the optimal operation time was 60 min, the removal rate of the chemical oxygen demand was 22.63%. The biodegradability of the landfill leachate was significantly improved with BOD5/COD increasing by 57.27%. The study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the application of hydrodynamic cavitation as a low-cost and efficient treatment method in the pretreatment of landfill leachate. Landfill leachate is generated from waste degradation in landfill sites, and its treatment includes biological or combined treatment with physico-chemical methods. A frequently applied technology in the biological stage of landfill leachate treatment plants is based on denitrification and nitrification. Nevertheless, with the availability of a huge number of scientific reports, the management of denitrification and nitrification (D/N) processes in the frame of real wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is rather difficult and always remains a critical technological problem. This study aims to perform a comparative assessment between denitrification and nitrification processes during landfill leachate treatment in three different situations in the WWTP of the Municipal Enterprise for Waste Treatment in Sofia City, Bulgaria. The comparative assessment is based on the biotransformation effectiveness of ammonium ions in the course of nitrification and of nitrates in the course of denitrification. Mixed samples (wastewater and activated sludge) were taken from the sequencing batch reactors operating in the mode of denitrification and nitrification. All physico-chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, organics concentration, BOD5:COD, nitrogen and phosphorous) and biological (sludge volume index, sludge biotic index, quantity of aerobic heterotrophs, denitrifiers and nitrifiers, total dehydrogenase activity) indicators were investigated in the samples from the biobasins in the mode of denitrification and nitrification. The conditions for the implementation of the two processes were compared, along with the state of the activated sludge in the different reactors. The obtained results showed that denitrification was the critical process in the technology on the base of D/N. A major factor that managed the denitrification was the lower concentration of biodegradable organic matter which led to a deformation of the activated sludge structure, a decrease in the count of heterotrophic microorganisms, a decrease in the total activity of the activated sludge and an inhibition of the nitrate reductase activity. The nitrification processes were accomplished with high intensity. Lindane (a harmful contaminant) was produced in Sabiñánigo (Huesca, Spain) and deposited at the Sardas landfill. This site contains a large mass of pollutants, which have an extremely large contamination potential of the Ebre River. The site has undergone numerous human interventions that have modified the natural conditions. The site exhibits complex hydrogeological patterns and has been monitored systematically for a long period of time, and a large amount of geological, hydrological, and hydrogeological data are available. Here, a 2D finite element groundwater flow model along a vertical profile heading east–west along the thalweg of the former gully is presented. The main goal is modelling groundwater flow through the landfill, the Gállego River alluvial aquifer, and its interactions with the Sabiñánigo reservoir. The numerical model confirms the prevailing conceptual hydrogeological model of the site. The main results include: (1) Groundwater flows into the landfill mainly along perimeter ditches, which do not properly drain the surface and subsurface runoff (13.84 m3/d) and from the underlying marly rock (8.84 m3/d); (2) The total landfill leachate outflow towards the alluvial floodplain underneath the front slurry wall through a shallow marl layer is equal to 17 m3/d; (3) The oscillations of the Sabiñánigo reservoir water level produce a tidal effect that results in periodic changes of the hydraulic gradient between the alluvial gravels and the reservoir; (4) Groundwater flows generally from the alluvial aquifer towards the reservoir in an average E–W direction with an average Darcy velocity equal to 5 cm/d. The flow direction, however, changes to W–E when the reservoir level rises suddenly and; (5) The hydrodynamic parameters of the alluvial silts and reservoir silting sediments are crucial in determining the influence radius of the inversion of groundwater flow direction when the reservoir level rises suddenly. Model results enhance the confidence of the conceptual model, provide the basis for detailed specific models of the landfill and the alluvial aquifer, and highlight the importance of considering the tidal effect of the reservoir level oscillations. Landfill leachate is regarded as a significant point source of pollutants that may pose a hazard to the environment, particularly to surface and ground waters. Leachates are highly variable and heterogeneous. Our study was focused on the characterization of landfill leachates derived from young (YDS) and matured (MDS) dumpsites in terms of the abundance of micropollutants, antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG), and microbial community structure. The concentrations of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were found to be higher in MDS compared to YDS, i.e., 13.19 and 7.16 μg/L, respectively. Among pharmaceutical compounds, ibuprofen was detected at the highest concentrations, i.e., 12.54, 12.81, and 13.13 μg/L, in the leachates derived from MDS, YDS, and ponds. The distribution of bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, and viruses in the three leachate samples was as follows: 85.15 ÷ 88.04%, 9.13 ÷ 12.29%, 2.20 ÷ 2.68%, and 0.12 ÷ 0.15%, respectively. In total, 31 distinct families of ARGs were identified, comprising a total of 80 ARGs. Incubation of P. putida MSCL650 in sterile leachate from the pond resulted in decreasing the minimum inhibitory concentrations for six antibiotics as compared to cells incubated in nutrient broth. Slope stability is one of the key engineering problems in the whole lifetime of landfills. In this paper, combined with the wedge limit equilibrium analysis, a landfill stability analysis method based on the actual failure surface is proposed, and the model is verified according to the data of centrifuge model tests. It is found that this method can more accurately calculate the factor of safety (FS) of the slope of the landfill and evaluate the stability of the slope. Finally, sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the effects of the actual failure surface angle, water level, soil parameters, and the presence or absence of a dam on the factor of safety. We analyzed ground subsidence at the coal ash disposal sites of Stanton Energy Center, a power plant located in Orlando, Florida, USA, by applying 157 Sentinel-1 SAR images obtained between May 2017 and December 2022 in ascending orbit to the PSInSAR technique. A LiDAR DEM with 1 m posting was used for the DInSAR and StaMPS processing for PSInSAR. The results showed significant ground subsidence on the area where solar panels were installed on top of the coal ash landfill. The coal ash landfill was divided into three sites (A, B, and C) according to the landfill sequence. The spatially averaged PSInSAR showed subsidence rates of 7.3 mm/year, 6.2 mm/year, and 8.8 mm/year in sites A, B, and C, respectively. In particular, relatively newly deposited sites A and B showed a decreasing trend in subsidence rate with higher quadratic components in regression function, indicating a stabilization of the subsidence. On the other hand, the oldest site C exhibited the highest (and a relatively constant) subsidence rate, suggesting that the settlement occurred earlier and is now at a constant rate. It is also suspected that new dumping activity near C might have caused a higher subsidence rate than in sites A and B. No subsidence occurred at other solar panel installations on the ground outside the landfill, suggesting that the subsidence was caused by the gravitational compaction of the landfill materials rather than by the instability of the solar facilities. Comparison of PSInSAR results with lower resolution DEMs, such as SRTM and Copernicus DEM, showed range errors of the PS positions proportional to the height deviation from LiDAR DEM, highlighting the importance of accurate DEMs for the time-series analysis of SAR data. Kuttanad is a region that lies in the southwest part of Kerala, India, and possesses soft soil, which imposes constraints on many civil engineering applications owing to low shear strength and high compressibility. Chemical stabilizers such as cement and lime have been extensively utilized in the past to address compressibility issues. However, future civilizations will be extremely dependent on the development of sustainable materials and practices such as the use of bio-enzymes, calcite precipitation methods, and biological materials as a result of escalating environmental concerns due to carbon emissions of conventional stabilizers. One such alternative is the utilization of biopolymers. The current study investigates the effect of chitosan (biopolymer extracted from shrimp shells) in improving the consolidation and shrinkage characteristics of these soft soils. The dosages adopted are 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4%. One-dimensional fixed ring consolidation tests indicate that consolidation characteristics are improved upon the addition of chitosan up to an optimum dosage of 2%. The coefficient of consolidation increases up to seven times that of untreated soil, indicating the acceleration of the consolidation process by incorporating chitosan. The shrinkage potential is reduced by 11% after amendment with 4% chitosan and all the treated samples exhibit zero signs of curling. Based on the findings from consolidation and shrinkage data, carbon emission assessments are carried out for a typical landfill liner amended with an optimum dosage of chitosan. In comparison to conventional stabilizers like cement and lime, the results indicate that chitosan minimized carbon emissions by 7.325 times and 8.754 times, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Properly managed urban household waste landfills play a crucial role in achieving sustainable development and ecological civilization. This paper proposes an innovative design method that aims to overcome the limitations and extensive challenges of traditional urban domestic waste landfill design by combining aerial image segmentation with ecological restoration theory. We suggest an enhanced SEVnet, a combination of the basic vnet network and the sequence-and-excitation module, for precise and efficient garbage dump identification. Through this module, the network can independently analyze the significance of each feature channel and provide weights, leading to enhanced image detail recovery and more precise segmentation. We implemented the proposed SEVnet model based on an aerial photography database of urban garbage dumps. Following precise urban garbage disposal site division, we adopt ecological restoration theory to achieve sustainable design. This article presents the Saihanba area in China as a case study, collects pertinent data, and conducts image segmentation and GIS-assisted analysis. This paper examines the landscape application and design of the landfill site based on an analysis and planning of land use in its vicinity. The intervention of landscape ecology imbues the landfill site with new functions. We propose comprehensive planning and landscape restoration design measures from four perspectives, encompassing disadvantages, threats, opportunities, and strengths, using SWOT analysis to better integrate the Hebei Saihanba landfill site with the surrounding environment. The improper disposal of PET bottle waste in Brazil jeopardizes the sustainability goals, impacting the social, economic, and environmental aspects. In order to tackle this issue, this study introduces a framework that was developed using a combination of environmental and social life cycle assessments (LCAs), along with a modified Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology. Nine disposal scenarios were evaluated in Bauru, Brazil, including various combinations of landfills, sorting cooperatives, and incineration. Environmental (Env-LCA) and social (S-LCA) assessments followed the ISO 14040 standards, with the S-LCA incorporating the UNEP/SETAC guidelines. Scenario 9 was identified as the most sustainable option from the evaluated scenarios, with 100% of the waste sent to sorting cooperatives, with modified collection schemes.
