Diseases that occur in silkworms include soft rot, hardening disease, digestive diseases, and sepsis. However, research on the causes of bacterial diseases occurring in silkworms and the resulting changes in the microbial community is lacking. Therefore, we examined the morphological characteristics of sepsis and changes in the microbial community between silkworms that exhibit a unique odor and healthy silkworms; thus, we established a relationship between disease-causing microorganisms and sepsis. After producing a 16S rRNA amplicon library for samples showing sepsis, we obtained information on the microbial community present in silkworms using next-generation sequencing. Compared to that in healthy silkworms, in silkworms with sepsis, the abundance of the Firmicutes phylum was significantly reduced, while that of Proteobacteria was increased. Serratia sp. was dominant in silkworms with sepsis. After bacterial isolation, identification, and reinfection through the oral cavity, we confirmed this organism as the disease-causing agent; its mortality rate was 1.8 times higher than that caused by Serratia marcescens. In summary, we identified a new causative bacterium of silkworm sepsis through microbial community analysis and confirmed that the microbial community balance was disrupted by the aberrant proliferation of certain bacteria. Background and Objectives: Intraarticular injection of tranexamic acid (IA-TXA) plus drain-clamping is a preferred method of reducing bleeding after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, no consensus has been reached regarding the timing of the clamping. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimum duration of drain-clamping after TKA with IA-TXA. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 151 patients that underwent unilateral TKA with IA-TXA plus drain-clamping for 30 min, 2 h, or 3 h. The total drained volume was reviewed as the primary outcome, and hematocrit (Hct) reductions, estimated blood loss (EBL), transfusion rates, and wound complications were reviewed as secondary outcomes. Results: The mean total drained volume, Hct reduction, and EBL were significantly less in the 3 h group than in the 30 min group. Between the 2 h and 3 h groups, there was no statistical difference in the mean total drained volume, Hct reduction, or EBL. The proportion of patients who drained lesser than 300 mL was high in the 3 h group. No significant intergroup difference was observed for transfusion volume, transfusion rate, and wound related complications. Conclusions: In comparison of the IA-TXA plus drain-clamping after TKA, there was no difference in EBL between the 2 h group and the 3 h group, but the amount of drainage volume was small in the 3 h group. Extragastric recurrence of early gastric cancer (EGC) after curative resection is rare, but prognosis has been poor in previous reports. Recently, single patient classifier (SPC) genes, such as secreted frizzled-related protein 4 (SFRP4) and caudal-type homeobox 1 (CDX1), were associated with prognosis and chemotherapy response in stage II–III gastric cancer. The aim of our study is, therefore, to elucidate predictive factors for extragastric recurrence of EGC after curative resection, including with the expression of SPC genes. We retrospectively reviewed electronic medical records of 1974 patients who underwent endoscopic or surgical curative resection for EGC. We analyzed clinicopathological characteristics to determine predictive factors for extragastric recurrence. Total RNA was extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tumor tissue and amplified by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction to evaluate expression of SPC genes. Overall incidences of extragastric recurrence were 0.9%. In multivariate analysis, submucosal invasion (odds ratio [OR] = 6.351, p = 0.032) and N3 staging (OR = 171.512, p = 0.012) were independent predictive factors for extragastric recurrence. Mean expression of SFRP4 in extragastric recurrence (−2.8 ± 1.3) was significantly higher than in the control group (−4.3 ± 1.6) (p = 0.047). Moreover, mean expression of CDX1 in extragastric recurrence (−4.6 ± 2.0) was significantly lower than in the control group (−2.4 ± 1.8) (p = 0.025). Submucosal invasion and metastasis of more than seven lymph nodes were independent predictive factors for extragastric recurrence. Osteoarthritis (OA) has generally been introduced as a degenerative disease; however, it has recently been understood as a low-grade chronic inflammatory process that could promote symptoms and accelerate the progression of OA. Current treatment strategies, including corticosteroid injections, have no impact on the OA disease progression. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) based therapy seem to be in the spotlight as a disease-modifying treatment because this strategy provides enlarged anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects. Currently, bone marrow, adipose derived, synovium-derived, and Wharton's jelly-derived MSCs are the most widely used types of MSCs in the cartilage engineering. MSCs exert immunomodulatory, immunosuppressive, antiapoptotic, and chondrogenic effects mainly by paracrine effect. Because MSCs disappear from the tissue quickly after administration, recently, MSCs-derived exosomes received the focus for the next-generation treatment strategy for OA. MSCs-derived exosomes contain a variety of miRNAs. Exosomal miRNAs have a critical role in cartilage regeneration by immunomodulatory function such as promoting chondrocyte proliferation, matrix secretion, and subsiding inflammation. In the future, a personalized exosome can be packaged with ideal miRNA and proteins for chondrogenesis by enriching techniques. Some studies have reported that a core vestibular projection (CVP) injury is associated with dizziness following a brain injury using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). On the other hand, there has been no DTT study on dizziness caused by a CVP injury in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). In this study, DTT was used to examine the relationship between dizziness and CVP injury in patients with mild TBI. Forty-three patients with mild TBI and twenty-nine normal subjects were recruited. The patients were classified into two groups based on the dizziness score: group A, patients with a dizziness score less than 2 on the sub-item score for dizziness in the Rivermead Post-concussion Symptoms Questionnaire; group B, patients with a dizziness score above 2. The tract volume (TV) in group B was significantly lower than group A and the control group (p < 0.05). By contrast, the TV in group A was similar to the control group (p > 0.05). Regarding the correlation, the dizziness score of all patients showed a strong negative correlation with the TV of the CVP (r = −0.711, p < 0.05). DTT revealed the CVP injury in patients with dizziness after mild TBI. In addition, the severity of dizziness of these patients was closely related to the injury severity of the CVP. A graphene photodetector decorated with Bi2Te3 nanowires (NWs) with a high gain of up to 3 × 104 and wide bandwidth window (400–2200 nm) has been demonstrated. The photoconductive gain was improved by two orders of magnitude compared to the gain of a photodetector using a graphene/Bi2Te3 nanoplate junction. Additionally, the position of photocurrent generation was investigated at the graphene/Bi2Te3 NWs junction. Eventually, with low bandgap Bi2Te3 NWs and a graphene junction, the photoresponsivity improved by 200% at 2200 nm (~0.09 mA/W). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zircon U-Pb geochronology and bulk-rock geochemistry analyses were carried out to investigate their relationship with depositional environments of the non-marine Neungju Basin sediments in South Korea. The Neungju Basin was formed in an active continental margin setting during the Late Cretaceous with associated volcanism. Detrital zircon age distributions of the Neungju Basin reveal that the source rocks surrounding the basin supplied sediments into the basin from all directions, making different zircon age populations according to the depositional environments. Mudstone geochemistry with support of detrital zircon U-Pb age data reveals how the heterogeneity affects the geochemical characteristics of tectonic setting and weathering intensity. The sediments in the proximal (alluvial fan to sandflat) and distal (playa lake) environments differ compositionally because sediment mixing occurred exclusively in the distal environment. The proximal deposits show a passive margin signature, reflecting their derivation from the adjacent metamorphic and granitic basement rocks. The distal deposits properly indicate an active continental margin setting due to the additional supply of reworked volcaniclastic sediments. The proximal deposits indicate a minor degree of chemical weathering corresponding to fossil and sedimentological records of the basin, whereas the distal deposits show lower weathering intensity by reworking of unaltered volcaniclastic detritus from unstable volcanic and volcaniclastic terranes. Overall, this study highlights that compositional data obtained from a specific location and depositional environments may not describe the overall characteristic of the basin. Herein, we present a patient diagnosed with dizziness due to a core vestibular projection injury following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). A 51-year-old female patient underwent conservative management for a spontaneous ICH in the left hemisphere (mainly affecting the basal ganglia and insular cortex). When she visited the rehabilitation department of the university hospital at two years after the ICH onset, she advised of the presence of moderate dizziness (mainly, light-headedness) that started after ICH onset. She mentioned that her dizziness had decreased slightly over time. No abnormality was observed in the vestibular system of either ear on physical examination by an otorhinolaryngologist. However, diffusion tensor tractography results showed that the core vestibular projection in the left hemisphere was discontinued at the basal ganglia level compared with the patient's right core vestibular projection and that of a normal subject. In early gastric cancer (EGC), tumor invasion depth is an important factor for determining the treatment method. However, as endoscopic ultrasonography has limitations when measuring the exact depth in a clinical setting as endoscopists often depend on gross findings and personal experience. The present study aimed to develop a model optimized for EGC detection and depth prediction, and we investigated factors affecting artificial intelligence (AI) diagnosis. We employed a visual geometry group(VGG)-16 model for the classification of endoscopic images as EGC (T1a or T1b) or non-EGC. To induce the model to activate EGC regions during training, we proposed a novel loss function that simultaneously measured classification and localization errors. We experimented with 11,539 endoscopic images (896 T1a-EGC, 809 T1b-EGC, and 9834 non-EGC). The areas under the curves of receiver operating characteristic curves for EGC detection and depth prediction were 0.981 and 0.851, respectively. Among the factors affecting AI prediction of tumor depth, only histologic differentiation was significantly associated, where undifferentiated-type histology exhibited a lower AI accuracy. Thus, the lesion-based model is an appropriate training method for AI in EGC. However, further improvements and validation are required, especially for undifferentiated-type histology.
