The hedgehog (Hh) signalling pathway plays a key role in both embryonic and postnatal development of the intestine and is responsible for gut homeostasis. It regulates stem cell renewal, formation of the villous–crypt axis, differentiation of goblet and Paneth cells, the cell cycle, apoptosis, development of gut innervation, and lipid metabolism. Ligands of the Hh pathway, i.e., Indian hedgehog (Ihh) and Sonic hedgehog (Shh), are expressed by superficial enterocytes but act in the mesenchyme, where they are bound by a Patched receptor localised on myofibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. This activates a cascade leading to the transcription of target genes, including those encoding G1/S-specific cyclin-D2 and -E1, B-cell lymphoma 2, fibroblast growth factor 4, and bone morphogenetic protein 4. The Hh pathway is tightly connected to Wnt signalling. Ihh is the major ligand in the Hh pathway. Its activation inhibits proliferation, while its blocking induces hyperproliferation and triggers a wound-healing response. Thus, Ihh is a negative feedback regulator of cell proliferation. There are data indicating that diet composition may affect the expression of the Hh pathway genes and proteins, which in turn, induces changes in mucosal architecture. This was shown for fat, vitamin A, haem, berberine, and ovotransferrin. The Hh signalling is also affected by the intestinal microbiota, which affects the intestinal barrier integrity. This review highlights the critical importance of the Hh pathway in shaping the intestinal mucosa and summarises the results obtained so far in research on the effect of dietary constituents on the activity of this pathway. Objectives: Electronic sports (esports) have grown into a major competitive field in today's digital landscape, attracting the interest of established companies and evolving into a fast-growing industry. Cognitive function, including reaction time, motor time, and eye–hand coordination, plays a crucial role in e-athlete performance. This study aims to examine the impact of VR training on these cognitive functions in amateur e-athletes. Methods: The study involved 66 amateur e-athletes (45 men and 21 women, aged 19–41, with a mean age of 23.96 ± 3.90 years) who reported active, non-professional involvement in esports. Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group (E) (n = 32) and a control group (C) (n = 34), with initial comparisons confirming no significant differences in daily gaming habits, esports experience, or age between groups. The E group completed 15-minute daily training sessions using the VR game Beat Saber over eight consecutive days. Results: The results demonstrated that VR training significantly improved eye–hand coordination in the experimental group, although there were no notable effects on reaction time or motor time. Conclusions: These findings suggest that VR training may be an effective method to enhance certain cognitive functions, specifically eye–hand coordination, among amateur e-athletes. Background: The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) are very rare lysosomal diseases. MPSs belong to inherited diseases; however, newborns are usually asymptomatic. A deficiency of one of the enzymes, which is responsible for glycosaminoglycan (GAG) catabolism, results in the accumulation of this material. GAGs lead to progressive damage to tissues. More than 90% of patients with MPS suffer from otitis media with effusion or recurrent otitis media, craniofacial dysmorphia, obstructive sleep apnea, different types of hearing loss, and progressive upper and lower airway dysfunction. Patients visit otolaryngologists often before the diagnosis of MPS. Thus, the awareness of symptoms of MPS is crucial for otolaryngologists and pediatricians. The earlier the diagnosis is made, the more effective treatment is. Ineffective or delayed treatment leads to premature death. Two principal treatments for MPS are currently available: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT). In recent years, there has been a growing interest in gene therapy as a potential treatment for patients with MPS. Mortality in patients with MPS typically occurs during childhood and early adolescence as a consequence of upper and lower respiratory diseases. Methods: This systematic review is based on papers available in the following scientific databases: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library. Results: After screening, 72 articles met our inclusion criteria. Conclusions: It is of paramount importance that otolaryngologists are involved in this field. The aim of the study was to compare two kinds of soluble dietary fibres in a mixture with OSA-starch as wall components of linseed oil capsules. Comparison was made based on emulsion (droplet size, polydispersity index, and viscosity) and powder properties (outer structure, colour, surface oil content, and encapsulation efficiency). Additionally, linseed oil powders were applied to the food model (apple juice) and the colour, physical stability, and volatile compound profile of fortified juice were determined. Although the obtained linseed oil emulsions with different compositions of polysaccharide components showed some variation in droplet size, polydisperse index and viscosity, their encapsulation efficiency by spray-drying was very high (>98%). The powders produced had a similar structure and low surface oil content, and their 2% addition to apple juice did not change its stability and only slightly decreased its colour lightness and yellowness. However, greater differences in the volatile compounds of obtained juices were observed. Overall, the added powders reduced the volatility of aroma compounds typical of apple juice but introduced propanal and hexanal, especially the powders with the highest OSA-starch share. The embryogenic transition of plant somatic cells to produce somatic embryos requires extensive reprogramming of the cell transcriptome. The prominent role of transcription factors (TFs) and miRNAs in controlling somatic embryogenesis (SE) induction in plants was documented. The profiling of MIRNA expression in the embryogenic culture of Arabidopsis implied the contribution of the miR156 and miR169 to the embryogenic induction. In the present study, the function of miR156 and miR169 and the candidate targets, SPL and NF-YA genes, were investigated in Arabidopsis SE. The results showed that misexpression of MIRNA156 and candidate SPL target genes (SPL2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15) negatively affected the embryogenic potential of transgenic explants, suggesting that specific fine-tuning of the miR156 and target genes expression levels seems essential for efficient SE induction. The results revealed that SPL11 under the control of miR156 might contribute to SE induction by regulating the master regulators of SE, the LEC (LEAFY COTYLEDON) genes (LEC1, LEC2, FUS3). Moreover, the role of miR169 and its candidate NF-YA targets in SE induction was demonstrated. The results showed that several miR169 targets, including NF-YA1, 3, 5, 8, and 10, positively regulated SE. We found, that miR169 via NF-YA5 seems to modulate the expression of a master SE regulator LEC1/NF-YA and other auxin-related genes: YUCCA (YUC4, 10) and PIN1 in SE induction. This study investigates the influence of a magnetic field on the microstructure and properties of Al2O3–Ni composites fabricated via centrifugal slip casting at 1500 rpm. Al2O3 and Ni powders were combined with water and deflocculants, homogenized, and then cast into a porous plaster mold surrounded by Nd-Fe-B magnets. The resulting composites, sintered in a reducing atmosphere, exhibited a three-zone structure with varying Ni content due to the combined effects of the magnetic field and centrifugal force. SEM, EDX, and XRD analyses confirmed the distribution and composition of the phases. Hardness tests revealed the highest values at the outermost zone, with a gradual decrease toward the inner zones. Compression tests employing digital image correlation revealed high internal stresses and a significant improvement in compressive strength compared to non-magnetic field methods. This study confirms that magnetic field-assisted centrifugal slip casting significantly enhances the structural, hardness, and compressive strength properties of Al2O3–Ni composites, indicating promising potential for advanced applications. APD (auditory processing disorders) is defined as difficulties in processing auditory stimuli within the central nervous system, with normative physical hearing and intellectual disabilities excluded. The scale of this phenomenon among children and adolescents and the need to raise awareness of its occurrence prompted the authors to review currently available diagnostic and therapeutic methods, as well as outline future directions for addressing children affected by APD. The aim of this study was to measure the physical attributes of seeds of selected lilac species and to describe the correlations between these properties and seed mass for seed processing and treatment. Basic physical parameters were measured in the seeds of five lilac species and the results were used to calculate aspect ratios describing seed shape and size. The average values of the measured properties ranged from 3.57 to 5.98 m s−1 for terminal velocity, from 6.20 to 9.61 mm for seed length, from 2.19 to 3.94 mm for seed width, from 0.85 to 1.21 mm for seed thickness, from 5.9 to 19.2 mg for seed mass, and from 32° to 44° for the angle of external friction. Seed mass was bound by the strongest correlations with terminal velocity (Amur lilac, Hungarian lilac, and Pekin lilac), thickness (broadleaf lilac), and width (Japanese tree lilac). Seed thickness followed by terminal velocity were the primary distinguishing features of lilac seeds. Therefore, lilac seeds should be sorted with the use of sieve separators with longitudinal openings or pneumatic separators. These devices effectively sort lilac seeds into fractions with uniform seed mass, which can facilitate the propagation of lilacs in nurseries and the production of high-quality seedlings, thus promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and production materials. In medium-sized and large seed fractions, the coefficient of variation of seed mass can be decreased by up to 50% relative to unsorted seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background. Coeliac disease (CD) often co-occurs with autoimmune conditions or genetic syndromes, but there are few studies on the co-existence of CD and immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergies. The purpose of this study was to assess sensitization to food and aero-allergens in pediatric patients with CD. (2) Methods. A multiplex ALEX®2 test was used to determine specific IgEs (sIgEs). (3) Results. The study included 108 children newly diagnosed with CD. Allergen extract- and/or allergen molecule-sIgEs were detected in 49.1% of children. Most children (41.5%) were sensitized to both inhalant and food allergens. The three most common aero-allergens (timothy pollen, ryegrass, silver birch) were molecules Phl p 1, Lol p 1, and Bet v 1. The most common food allergens (hazelnut, apple, and peanut) were Cor a 1, Mal d 1, and Ara h 8 molecules of the PR-10 subfamily. Patients were not sensitized to cereal allergens containing gluten. Spearman's rank correlation analysis of sensitized patients showed a significant positive relationship (r = 0.31) between the patients' age and the occurrence of positive sIgEs (≥0.3 kUA/L) for inhalant allergen molecules (p = 0.045). In sensitized patients, mainly symptoms of inhalant allergy were observed, such as hay fever, conjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma. (4) Conclusions. The current study indicates the co-occurrence of IgE sensitization to food and inhalant allergens in children with CD. The study highlights the need to take a closer look at the diagnosis of IgE-mediated allergy in patients with CD, which may help in their care and lead to a better understanding of the relationship between CD and IgE-mediated allergy. Background: Male fertility is known to have been negatively influenced by the progress of civilization. Another condition whose incidence has been on the increase for the same reason is insulin resistance (IR). In addition, men increasingly often resign from the pursuit of active forms of leisure, preferring more sedentary ones. Considering these trends, this aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between lifestyle factors, insulin resistance, and male fertility in men with and without the condition. A further aim was to select those lifestyle factors that would make it possible to predict the level of male fertility, especially when IR is concerned. Methods: This study was performed in a group of 73 participants, divided into groups based on their insulin resistance status. Their physical activity, diet, perceived stress, sleep quality, libido level, and duration of sexual abstinence were assessed on the basis of a number of parameters, including indices proposed by the authors. In addition, relevant anthropometric measurements were taken and tests related to glucose metabolism and semen quality were carried out. On the basis of these data, statistical tests were performed to establish or disprove relationships between lifestyle choices and semen quality, as measured my sperm motility. Results: The results of this study highlighted the associations between a number of parameters, i.e., micronutrient and vitamin intake, diet quality, body composition, insulin resistance, and the duration of sexual abstinence, and semen quality, as measured by sperm motility. Significantly, the presence or absence of IR was linked to male fertility. A multivariate model was developed, incorporating parameters such as the Matsuda index, vitamin intake, and sexual abstinence duration, to predict motility scores. Conclusions: This study underscores the negative impact of modern civilization's lifestyle choices on male fertility. Notably, vitamin and mineral consumption, especially from antioxidant-rich diets like the Mediterranean diet, emerged as key modifiable factors affecting fertility. Routine diagnostics for insulin resistance in fertility-related interventions is recommended. This study also highlights the importance of considering sexual abstinence duration during semen collection for accurate diagnostic results. Future research should focus on validating the proposed multivariate model and exploring the effects of lifestyle modifications, particularly vitamin supplementation, on fertility outcomes in men, especially in the context of IR. Nigella sativa L. (black cumin) is one of the most investigated medicinal plants in recent years. Volatile compounds like thymoquinone and unsaponifiable lipid compounds are crucial functional components of this oil. Unfortunately, the composition of oils and their quality indicators are ambiguous both in terms of identified compounds and value ranges. Thirteen oils were extracted with hexane from black cumin seeds grown in India, Syria, Egypt, and Poland and analyzed for their fatty acid composition, unsaponifiable compound content and volatile compounds. Oils were also subjected to quality tests according to standard methods. The fatty acid composition and sterol content/composition were relatively stable among the tested oils. Tocol content varied in the range of 140–631 mg/kg, and among them, β-tocotrienol and γ-tocopherol prevailed. Oils' volatile compounds were dominated by seven terpenes (p-cymene, α-thujene, α-pinene, β-pinene, thymoquinone, γ-terpinene, and sabinene). The highest contents of these volatiles were determined in samples from Poland and in two of six samples from India. High acid and peroxide values were typical features of N. sativa L. oils. To sum up, future research on the medicinal properties of black cumin oil should always be combined with the analysis of its chemical composition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: An encapsulation strategy with the use of a spray-drying technique and whey protein concentrate with maltodextrin as wall material is recommended to obtain oxidatively stable powders with linseed oil and ethyl esters of this oil. These powders can be easily applied to various food matrices, increasing the share of valuable α-linolenic acid. The aim of the study was to compare the encapsulation of linseed oil and its ethyl esters using two coating materials (maltodextrin with whey protein concentrate (WPC) vs. maltodextrin with gum arabic) and two drying methods (spray-drying vs. freeze-drying) to obtain powders with the highest oxidative stability. A comparison was made based on the properties of emulsions (morphology, particle size distribution, and stability) and powders (morphology, physicochemical properties, fatty acid composition, and oxidative stability). The powder's oxidative stability was determined based on the Rancimat protocol. The most uniform distribution of oil droplets in prepared emulsions was stated for ethyl esters in a mixture of maltodextrin and gum arabic. Emulsions with WPC had a bimodal character, while those with gum arabic had a monomodal character. Gum arabic promoted emulsion stability, while in samples containing WPC, sedimentation and creaming processes were more visible. Powders obtained using spray-drying had a spherical shape, while those obtained by freeze-drying were similar to flakes. Although encapsulation efficiency was the highest for freeze-dried powders made of linseed ethyl esters with gum arabic, the highest oxidative stability was stated for powders made by spray-drying with WPC as wall material (independently of linseed sample form). Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic immune-mediated disorder triggered by the ingestion of gluten in genetically predisposed individuals, affecting about 1% of the general population in the developed world. In 2012, the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) recommendations for CD diagnoses in children and adolescents were introduced, allowing the "no-biopsy" approach if certain criteria were met. This approach was also confirmed in the revised guidelines published in 2020. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess—over a one-year period—the clinical presentations and current status of the management of children and adolescents diagnosed with CD in Poland. Medical records of children and adolescents, newly diagnosed with CD in 2022/2023 in three medical centers in Poland, were involved. Gastroenterologists completed the specific anonymous web-based forms developed in the CD SKILLS project, including data routinely assessed at individual visits about the diagnostic approach and clinical presentation of the disease. Our study assessed 100 patients (56% girls) with an age range 1.6–18.0 years. We found that 98% of patients were serologically tested prior to a CD diagnosis and 58% of patients were diagnosed using the "no-biopsy" approach. In the analyzed group, 40% belonged to a known risk group, only 22% had annual screening before the CD diagnosis (the longest for 9 years), and 19% showed no symptoms at the time of the CD diagnosis. Our research confirmed the applicability of the "no-biopsy" approach for the diagnosis of CD in children and adolescents in Poland, and also showed changes in the clinical picture of CD. (1) Background: Hemangiomas in Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome patients are typically benign but pose threats due to their vital locations involving the central nervous system and the retina. An MRI is currently recommended as the gold standard for tumors associated with VHL in the head region. This narrative review aims to comprehensively outline current standards and recent findings related to imaging of retinal and CNS hemangiomas in Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. (2) Material and Methods: A review in adherence to PRISMA guidelines using the search string "Von Hippel-Lindau hemangioblastoma imaging" was conducted on PUBMED and SCOPUS databases. (3) Results: After reviewing 455 titles and abstracts, 20 publications fulfilling the inclusion criteria were analyzed. The analysis included studies describing MRI, CT, optical coherence tomography, and PET/CT. (4) Conclusion: While MRI remains the gold standard for diagnosing head tumors in Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, various PET/CT methods show promise as alternative imaging modalities. As a substitution for hormone replacement therapy, many breast cancer patients use black cohosh (BC) extracts in combination with doxorubicin (DOX)-based chemotherapy. In this study, we evaluated the viability and survival of BC- and DOX-treated MCF-7 cells. A preclinical model of MCF-7 xenografts was used to determine the influence of BC and DOX administration on tumor growth and metabolism. The number of apoptotic cells after incubation with both DOX and BC was significantly increased (~100%) compared to the control. Treatment with DOX altered the potential of MCF-7 cells to form colonies; however, coincubation with BC did not affect this process. In vivo, PET-CT imaging showed that combined treatment of DOX and BC induced a significant reduction in both metabolic activity (29%) and angiogenesis (32%). Both DOX and BC treatments inhibited tumor growth by 20% and 12%, respectively, and combined by 57%, vs. control. We successfully demonstrated that BC increases cytotoxic effects of DOX, resulting in a significant reduction in tumor size. Further studies regarding drug transport and tumor growth biomarkers are necessary to establish the underlying mechanism and potential clinical use of BC in breast cancer patients. In recent years, there was an increase in the commercial offer of vegetable oils from unconventional sources, such as fruit, vegetable, and herb seeds. The paper presents a synthesis of available scientific information on 27 oils obtained from the seeds of 14 fruit species (apple, apricot, chokeberry, black berry, blackcurrant, blue berry, cherry, Japanese quince, pear, plum, quince, raspberry, rosehip, and strawberry), 8 vegetable species (broccoli, cabbage, carrot, cucumber, onion, parsley, radish, and tomato), and 5 herb species (basil, coriander, fennel, fenugreek, and perilla). A review of the literature showed that oil content in these seeds ranges from ca. 5% for fenugreek to over 55% for apricot kernels. A recommended n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio below 4-5/1 was noted in 11 species. Japanese quince, blackcurrant, and fenugreek seed oils seem to be good sources of phytosterols. Radish seed oil was mostly abundant in tocols, Japanese quince seed oil in squalene, and blackcurrant seed oil in carotenoids. Unfortunately, actual data on the composition of these seed oils are highly variable, making it difficult to precisely identify the most nutritionally valuable oils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to determine the effects of Zn sources, used with potato fiber (PF) or lignocellulose (LC), on electrolyte concentration and the mucus layer in the large intestine of pigs. The experiment involved 24 barrows with an initial body weight of 10.8 ± 0.82 kg, divided into four groups fed the following diets: LC and ZnSO4, LC and Zn glycinate (ZnGly), PF and ZnSO4, or PF and ZnGly. Fiber supplements provided 10 g crude fiber/kg diet, while Zn additives introduced 120 mg Zn/kg diet. After four weeks of feeding, the pigs were sacrificed and digesta and tissue samples were taken from the cecum and colon. PF increased the water content and decreased the phosphorus concentration in the large intestine in comparison with LC. PF also increased calcium, iron, and chloride concentrations in the descending colon. Mucus layer thickness and histological parameters of the large intestine were not affected. ZnGly diets increased MUC12 expression in the cecum as compared to the LC-ZnSO4 group. In the ascending colon, the PF-ZnGly diet increased MUC5AC expression, while both PF groups had greater MUC20 expression in comparison with the LC-ZnSO4 group. In the transverse colon, the LC-ZnGly group and both PF groups had higher MUC5AC expression in comparison with the LC-ZnSO4 group, and both ZnGly groups had higher MUC20 expression than ZnSO4 groups. PF and ZnGly increased MUC4 and MUC5AC expression in the descending colon. PF and ZnGly may exert a beneficial effect on colon health in pigs by upregulating the expression of the MUC5AC and MUC20 genes and are more effective than LC and ZnSO4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cloud motif, a significant one in the landscape painting of the 1890s and early 1900s, has been usually marginalized by scholars despite the fact that during this (Symbolist) period clouds became independent subjects of landscape painting in many European countries, especially in the Baltic Sea Region. Cloud imagery makes a robust appearance in Scandinavian, Russian, Polish, Lithuanian, and Latvian art during the decades around 1900. The variety of symbolic meanings and possible interpretations of cloudscapes was impacted by cultural and literary associations that emerged with European Symbolism. There is a surprising resemblance of cloudscapes executed within the Baltic Sea Region, an examination of which reveals the complexity of artistic influence and the presence and wandering of motifs among artists. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics aims to study the proteome both qualitatively and quantitatively. A key step in proteomic analysis is sample preparation, which is crucial for reliable results. We investigated the effect of the composition of the homogenization buffer used to extract proteins from brain tissue on the yield of protein extraction and the number and type of extracted proteins. Three different types of buffers were compared—detergent-based buffer (DB), chaotropic agent-based buffer (CAB) and buffer without detergent and chaotropic agent (DFB). Based on label-free quantitative protein analysis, detergent buffer was identified as the most suitable for global proteomic profiling of brain tissue. It allows the most efficient extraction of membrane proteins, synaptic and synaptic membrane proteins along with ribosomal, mitochondrial and myelin sheath proteins, which are of particular interest in the field of neurodegenerative disorders research. FGR is a complication of pregnancy in which the fetus does not reach its programmed growth potential due to placental reasons and it is the single largest risk factor of stillbirth. Babies with FGR are at increased risk of mortality and morbidity not only in the perinatal period, but also in later life. FGR presents a huge challenge for obstetricians in terms of its detection and further monitoring of pregnancy. The ultrasound is the gold standard here; apart from assessing fetal weight, it is used to measure Doppler flows in maternal and fetal circulation. It seems that additional tests, like biochemical angiogenic factors measurement would be helpful in diagnosing FGR, identifying fetuses at risk and adjusting the surveillance model. The study aimed to assess the potential relationship between the concentration of sEng, sFlt-1, PlGF, and the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in maternal serum at delivery and maternal and fetal Doppler flow measurements as well as perinatal outcomes in pregnancies complicated by FGR with and without PE, isolated PE cases and normal pregnancies. The use of angiogenic markers is promising not only in PE but also in FGR. Numerous correlations between ultrasound and Doppler studies, perinatal outcomes and disordered angiogenesis marker levels in maternal serum suggest that biochemical parameters have a great potential to be used as a complementary method to diagnose and monitor pregnancies with FGR. The increasing global demand for innovative and environmentally friendly lubricants can be met through the use of solid lubricants. By switching from conventional lubricants such as various oils or grease to solid lubricants, new scopes of application can also be opened up. The main requirements for solid lubricants are a reduction in the coefficient of friction (CoF) and an increase in wear resistance. Due to the favourable material properties, molybdenum (Mo) coatings fulfil the tribological requirements and are therefore promising solid lubricants which can be applied via physical vapour deposition (PVD). In this work, the impact of substrate temperature on the hot hardness of deposited Mo coatings was determined. The specimen with the highest hot hardness was then tribologically examined both at the micro and nano level. Through an analysis of the wear tracks by means of nanoindentation and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was possible to detect the influence of the tribological load separately from that of the thermal loads. The results showed that the tribological load influenced the Mo coating by significantly increasing its hardness. The scientific goal of this paper is to study and explain the relationship between the microstructure of a ceramic–intermetallic composite fabricated by consolidating a mixture of Al2O3 and NiAl-Al2O3 using the PPS technique and its basic mechanical properties. Six series of composites were manufactured. The obtained samples differed in the sintering temperature and content of compo-powder. The base powders, compo-powder, and composites were investigated using SEM equipped with an EDS and XRD. Hardness tests and KIC measurements were applied to estimate the mechanical properties of the fabricated composites. The wear resistance was evaluated using a "ball-on-disc" method. The results demonstrate that the density of the obtained composites increases with the increased temperature of the sintering. The content of NiAl + 20 wt.% Al2O3 did not have a determining effect on the hardness of the manufactured composites. The highest hardness, contacting 20.9 ± 0.8 GPa, was found for the composite series sintered at 1300 °C and 2.5 vol.% of compo-powder. The highest KIC value from all the studied series equaled 8.13 ± 0.55 MPa·m0.5 and was also achieved for the series manufactured at 1300 °C (2.5 vol.% of compo-powder). BRAF V600E and KRAS mutations that occur in colorectal cancer (CRC) define a subpopulation of patients with an inferior prognosis. Recently, the first BRAF V600E-targeting therapy has been approved and novel agents targeting KRAS G12C are being evaluated in CRC. A better understanding of the clinical characteristics of the populations defined by those mutations is needed. We created a retrospective database that collects clinical characteristics of patients with metastatic CRC evaluated for RAS and BRAF mutations in a single laboratory. A total of 7604 patients tested between October 2017 and December 2019 were included in the analysis. The prevalence of BRAF V600E was 6.77%. Female sex, primary in the right colon, high-grade, mucinous, signet cell, partially neuroendocrine histology, perineural and vascular invasion, and surgical tissue sample were factors associated with increased mutation rates. The prevalence of KRAS G12C was 3.11%. Cancer of primary origin in the left colon and in samples from brain metastases were associated with increased mutation rates. The high prevalence of the BRAF V600E mutation in cancers with a neuroendocrine component identifies a potential candidate population for BRAF inhibition. The development of polymer matrices as dental drug carriers takes into account the following technological aspects of the developed formulations: the composition and the technology used to manufacture them, which affect the properties of the carriers, as well as the testing methods for assessing their behavior at application sites. The first part of this paper characterizes the methods for fabricating dental drug carriers, i.e., the solvent-casting method (SCM), lyophilization method (LM), electrospinning (ES) and 3D printing (3DP), describing the selection of technological parameters and pointing out both the advantages of using the mentioned methods and their limitations. The second part of this paper describes testing methods to study the formulation properties, including their physical and chemical, pharmaceutical, biological and in vivo evaluation. Comprehensive in vitro evaluation of carrier properties permits optimization of formulation parameters to achieve prolonged retention time in the dynamic oral environment and is essential for explaining carrier behavior during clinical evaluation, consequently enabling the selection of the optimal formulation for oral application. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit of the intertriginous body areas. Recent findings have suggested the association between periodontitis and HS. This investigation aimed to characterize and compare the composition of subgingival microbiome between HS, periodontitis, and control patients. The nine crucial perio-pathogenic species and total bacteria were analyzed using RT-PCR based tests in samples collected from 30 patients with periodontitis, 30 patients with HS and 30 controls. Patients with HS were excluded if they had periodontitis and patients with periodontitis were excluded if they had HS. The mean total bacteria count was significantly higher in HS and periodontitis samples than in control samples (p < 0.05). The majority of perio-pathogens tested were more frequently detected in HS and periodontitis groups than among controls. Treponema denticola was the most common pathogen in individuals with HS (70%) and periodontitis (86.7%), while among controls Capnocytophyga gingivalis was the most frequently detected isolate (33.2%). The edible portions of cauliflowers and broccoli are immature flower heads composed of florets attached to the stalk. In most cases, larger florets are separated into smaller pieces during processing. Complex processing lines for cauliflower and broccoli floretting are available on the market, but they are very expensive and require a large working area. Therefore, the aim of this study was to present a proposal for a new floretting unit dedicated to this group of vegetables. The unit will be operated in small farms; it will help producers shorten processing times and sell their goods for higher prices. It was assumed that the unit will feature two main devices: a vegetable crusher and a calibrator. The crusher will remove the florets from the stalk and break larger florets into smaller pieces of appropriate size. Florets with a diameter of 2 to 6 cm will be separated by the calibrator. During the process, leaves, stalks, and very small florets will fall into separate containers, and these fractions will be further processed into food products. The entire process will be carried out directly on the farm, which can increase potential profits by around 25%. Background: Breast cancer, with 2.3 million new cases and 0.7 million deaths every year, represents a great medical challenge worldwide. These numbers confirm that approx. 30% of BC patients will develop an incurable disease requiring life-long, palliative systemic treatment. Endocrine treatment and chemotherapy administered in a sequential fashion are the basic treatment options in advanced ER+/HER2- BC, which is the most common BC type. The palliative, long-term treatment of advanced BC should not only be highly active but also minimally toxic to allow long-term survival with the optimal quality of life. A combination of metronomic chemotherapy (MC) with endocrine treatment (ET) in patients who failed earlier lines of ET represents an interesting and promising option. Methods: The methodology includes retrospective data analyses of pretreated, metastatic ER+/HER2- BC (mBC) patients who were treated with the FulVEC regimen combining fulvestrant and MC (cyclophosphamide, vinorelbine, and capecitabine). Results: Thirty-nine previously treated (median 2 lines 1–9) mBC patients received FulVEC. The median PFS and OS were 8.4 and 21.5 months, respectively. Biochemical responses (CA-15.3 serum marker decline ≥50%) were observed in 48.7%, and any increase in CA-15.3 was observed in 23.1% of patients. The activity of FulVEC was independent of previous treatments with fulvestrant of cytotoxic components of the FulVEC regimen. The treatment was safe and well tolerated. Conclusions: Metronomic chemo-endocrine therapy with FulVEC regimen represents an interesting option and compares favorably with other approaches in patients' refractory to endocrine treatments. Simple Summary: In this retrospective analysis of 72 advanced ovarian cancer patients, we have evaluated the safety and activity of orally-administered metronomic chemotherapy (MC) based on single agent topotecan or a combination of topotecan and cyclophosphamide (CyTo regimen). In this difficult population, metronomic chemotherapy demonstrated a clinically meaningful activity and good safety profile. The MC provided a clinical benefit in the majority of treated patients, with fewer than 15% not benefitting from this treatment (biochemical or radiographic progression). The median PFS in the whole population was 3.65 months, but the median PFS in patients with a biochemical response to MC (18.2% of patients) reached 10.7 months. The study also showed that overweight or obese patients had significantly better outcomes on MC than patients with BMI <25 kg/m2. This analysis established the CyTo regimen as the preferred MC to be evaluated in a phase II clinical trial currently under construction. Patients with advanced ovarian cancer (OC) have a detrimental prognosis. The options for systemic treatment of advanced OC in later lines of treatment are limited by the availability of active therapies and their applicability to often fragile, exhausted patients with poor performance status. Metronomic chemotherapy (MC) is a concept of a continuous administration of cytotoxic drugs, which is characterized by multidirectional activity (anti-proliferative, anti-angiogenic, and anti-immunosuppressive) and low toxicity. We have performed a retrospective analysis of consecutive, advanced, chemo-refractory OC patients treated with MC based on single-agent topotecan (1 mg p.o. q2d) or on a topotecan (1 mg q2d) and cyclophosphamide (50 mg p.o. qd) combination (CyTo). Metronomic chemotherapy demonstrated promising activity, with 72% and 86% of patients achieving biochemical or objective disease control and 18% and 27% of patients achieving a biochemical or objective response, respectively. The median PFS in the whole population was 3.65 months, but the median PFS in patients with a biochemical response to MC (18.2% of patients) reached 10.7 months. The study also suggested that overweight or obese patients had significantly better outcomes on MC than patients with BMI <25 kg/m2. This article is the first report in the literature on metronomic chemotherapy based on a topotecan + cyclophosphamide combination (CyTo). Pneumonia is common in the intensive care unit (ICU), infecting 27% of all critically ill patients. Given the high prevalence of this disease state in the ICU, optimizing antimicrobial therapy while minimizing toxicities is of utmost importance. Inappropriate antimicrobial use can increase the risk of antimicrobial resistance, Clostridiodes difficile infection, allergic reaction, and other complications from antimicrobial use (e.g., QTc prolongation, thrombocytopenia). The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum levels of anti- and pro-angiogenic substances measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and their ratios in pregnancies complicated by different clinical subsets of placental ischemic syndrome: preeclampsia and/or fetal growth restriction. A prospective case-control study was performed consisting of 77 singleton pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia, preeclampsia with concurrent fetal growth restriction (FGR), and isolated normotensive FGR pairwise matched by gestational age with healthy pregnancies. The entire study cohort was analyzed with respect to adverse pregnancy outcomes that occurred. In all investigated subgroups, placental growth factor (PlGF) was lower and soluble endoglin (sEng), the soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1—sFlt-1/PlGF and sFlt-1*sEng/PlGF ratios were higher than in the control group. The differences were most strongly pronounced in the PE with concurrent FGR group and in the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio. The highest sFlt-1 values in preeclamptic patients suggest that this substance may be responsible for reaching the threshold needed for PE to develop as a maternal manifestation of ischemic placental disease. The FGR is characterized by an elevated maternal sFlt-1/PlGF ratio, which boosts at the moment of indicated delivery due to fetal risk. We concluded that angiogenic imbalance is reflective of placental disease regardless of its clinical manifestation in the mother, and may be used as support for the diagnosis and prognosis of FGR. Porous organic polymers incorporating nitrogen-rich functionalities have recently emerged as promising materials for efficient and highly selective CO2 capture and separation. Herein, we report synthesis and characterization of new two-dimensional (2D) benzene- and triazine-based azo-bridged porous organic polymers. Different synthetic approaches towards the porous azo-bridged polymers were tested, including reductive homocoupling of aromatic nitro monomers, oxidative homocoupling of aromatic amino monomers and heterocoupling of aromatic nitro monomers and a series of aromatic diamines of different lengths and rigidity. IR spectroscopy, 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption–desorption experiments and computational study were used to characterize structures and properties of the resulting polymers. The synthesized azo-bridged polymers are all amorphous solids of good thermal stability, exhibiting various surface areas (up to 351 m2 g−1). The obtained results indicated that the synthetic methods and building units have a pronounced effect on the porosity of the final materials. Reductive and oxidative homocoupling of aromatic nitro and amino building units, respectively, lead to 2D azo-bridged polymers of substantially higher porosity when compared to those produced by heterocoupling reactions. Periodic DFT calculations and Grand-canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations suggested that, within the used approximations, linear linkers of different lengths do not significantly affect CO2 adsorption properties of model azo-bridged polymers. The diagnosis of celiac disease (CD) at the first diagnostic step requires the detection of specific class A antibodies to tissue transglutaminase type-2 (TG2 IgA) and the measurement of total immunoglobulin A (tIgA) to exclude IgA deficiency. The aim of the study was to evaluate the new quantitative immunoassay panel allowing for the detection of celiac-specific antibodies with the simultaneous determination of tIgA from the same sample of blood at one time. This retrospective study included 104 pediatric patients divided into groups with recognized CD and IgA deficiency (n = 20; 19%), immunocompetent children with CD (n = 28; 27%), children with IgA deficiency and without CD (n = 28; 27%), and the control group of immunocompetent children without CD (n = 28; 27%). Intestinal biopsy with histopathological evaluation (except five patients with CD who were diagnosed without biopsy) and measurement of reference celiac specific antibodies were performed in all children. Multiparametric quantitative immunoassay Polycheck® Celiac IgA plus total IgA test was used to evaluate its usefulness in CD screening and IgA deficiency diagnosis. The statistical analysis showed the high sensitivity and specificity of both TG2 IgA and tIgA on the multiparametric panel (sensitivity 96% and 100%; specificity 100% and 79%, respectively). The accuracy and area under the ROC curve for tIgA were 0.904 and 0.955, while for TG2 IgA they were 0.982 and 1.000, respectively. Although the sensitivity of IgA antibodies against deaminated gliadin peptides was low (20%), the specificity reached 100%. Obesity and diabetes are associated with severe outcomes of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Vaccines against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been proven protective against infection and severe COVID-19. However, the immune response of metabolically burdened individuals to the vaccines remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to assess whether the metabolic status of individuals affects their humoral immune responses to the vaccination. Moreover, we evaluated whether the interval between the first two doses influenced antibody concentration. Sixty-seven individuals (21 males, 46 females) were vaccinated with the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Fifty-four individuals were vaccinated with the second dose after 3 weeks and 13 after 5 weeks. We measured the antibody titers in all participants during the 19-week follow-up period. Patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were excluded. In the 5-week interval group, a significantly higher level of maximal antibody titers was observed. However, there were no differences in antibody concentrations after 19 weeks and no significant correlation between cardiometabolic factors and humoral response. The elongation of second-dose timing to 5 weeks leads to a higher acute antibody response but does not change long-term levels of antibody titers. Motile cilia and eukaryotic flagella are specific cell protrusions that are conserved from protists to humans. They are supported by a skeleton composed of uniquely organized microtubules—nine peripheral doublets and two central singlets (9 × 2 + 2). Microtubules also serve as docking sites for periodically distributed multiprotein ciliary complexes. Radial spokes, the T-shaped ciliary complexes, repeat along the outer doublets as triplets and transduce the regulatory signals from the cilium center to the outer doublet-docked dynein arms. Using the genetic, proteomic, and microscopic approaches, we have shown that lack of Tetrahymena Cfap91 protein affects stable docking/positioning of the radial spoke RS3 and the base of RS2, and adjacent inner dynein arms, possibly due to the ability of Cfap91 to interact with a molecular ruler protein, Ccdc39. The localization studies confirmed that the level of RS3-specific proteins, Cfap61 and Cfap251, as well as RS2-associated Cfap206, are significantly diminished in Tetrahymena CFAP91-KO cells. Cilia of Tetrahymena cells with knocked-out CFAP91 beat in an uncoordinated manner and their beating frequency is dramatically reduced. Consequently, CFAP91-KO cells swam about a hundred times slower than wild-type cells. Prediabetes is an intermediate state of hyperglycemia during which glycemic parameters are above normal levels but below the T2D threshold. T2D and its precursor prediabetes affect 6.28% and 7.3% of the world's population, respectively. The main objective of this paper was to create and compare two polygenic risk scores (PRSs) versus changes over time (Δ) in metabolic parameters related to prediabetes and metabolic complications. The genetics of 446 prediabetic patients from the Polish Registry of Diabetes cohort were investigated. Seventeen metabolic parameters were measured and compared at baseline and after five years using statistical analysis. Subsequently, genetic polymorphisms present in patients were determined to build a T2D PRS (68 SNPs) and an obesity PRS (21 SNPs). Finally, the association among the two PRSs and the Δ of the metabolic traits was assessed. After a multiple linear regression with adjustment for age, sex, and BMI at a nominal significance of (p < 0.05) and adjustment for multiple testing, the T2D PRS was found to be positively associated with Δ fat mass (FM) (p = 0.025). The obesity PRS was positively associated with Δ FM (p = 0.023) and Δ 2 h glucose (p = 0.034). The comparison of genotype frequencies showed that AA genotype carriers of rs10838738 were significantly higher in Δ 2 h glucose and in Δ 2 h insulin. Our findings suggest that prediabetic individuals with a higher risk of developing T2D experience increased Δ FM, and those with a higher risk of obesity experience increased Δ FM and Δ two-hour postprandial glucose. Angiogenesis is the development of new blood vessels from the existing vasculature. Its malfunction leads to the development of cancers and cardiovascular diseases qualified by the WHO as a leading cause of death worldwide. A better understanding of mechanisms regulating physiological and pathological angiogenesis will potentially contribute to developing more effective treatments for those urgent issues. Therefore, the main goal of the following study was to design and manufacture an angiogenesis-on-a-chip microplatform, including cylindrical microvessels created by Viscous Finger Patterning (VFP) technique and seeded with HUVECs. While optimizing the VFP procedure, we have observed that lumen's diameter decreases with a diminution of the droplet's volume. The influence of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) with a concentration of 5, 25, 50, and 100 ng/mL on the migration of HUVECs was assessed. VEGF's solution with concentrations varying from 5 to 50 ng/mL reveals high angiogenic potential. The spatial arrangement of cells and their morphology were visualized by fluorescence and confocal microscopy. Migration of HUVECs toward loaded angiogenic stimuli has been initiated after overnight incubation. Periodontitis has been causally connected with the development of other immune-mediated inflammatory disorders previously. Nevertheless, the current literature does not provide knowledge on oral health in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) individuals. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of periodontitis and characterize an oral microbiome in HS patients. Fifty-five patients with HS and fifty-five healthy controls were enlisted in the study. The incidence of periodontitis was assessed in all patients during the periodontal evaluation. RT-PCR tests were used to quantification of bacterial content and assess the number and composition of nine crucial periodontal pathogens. HS patients had a significantly higher prevalence of periodontitis than healthy controls (45.5% versus 14.5%). Significantly higher values of average copy-count numbers of total bacteria were found in HS patients. The majority of periodontal pathogens were more frequently isolated in patients with HS than among controls. The most frequently detected pathogen in the HS group was Treponema denticola (70.9%), whereas among controls Capnocytophaga gingivalis (34.5%) was the most common isolate. There was no correlation between HS severity and the number of DNA copies of periodontal bacteria. The findings of this research suggest that periodontitis may contribute to the development of HS. Simple Summary: Inulin-type fructans (ITFs), one of the best studied and most well-established prebiotic carbohydrates, have been shown to exert many health benefits to the host, including improvement in cardiovascular function. Various mechanisms are known to be involved in these processes, such as reduction of blood lipid levels by altering hepatic de novo lipogenesis, enhanced lipoprotein lipase activity in muscle, increased intestinal short-chain fatty acid production, elevated fecal excretion of bile salts and cholesterol and increased production of nitric oxide, known as endothelium-derived relaxing factor. Therefore, our overall aim was to assess the impact of complementary feeding with 4% of dried chicory root or 2% of native inulin on the aortic protein and gene changes in healthy nursery pigs. Our data clearly indicate that dietary inulin-type fructans have the potential to influence several structural and physiological alterations that are reflected both in the mRNA and protein levels in porcine aorta. In this study, two different ITFs sources were incorporated into a cereal-based diet to evaluate possible aortic protein and gene changes in nursery pigs. The animals were fed two different experimental diets from the 10th day of life, supplemented with either 4% of dried chicory root (CR) or with 2% of native inulin (IN). After a 40-day dietary intervention trial, pigs were sacrificed at day 50 and the aortas were harvested. Our data indicate that dietary ITFs have the potential to influence several structural and physiological changes that are reflected both in the mRNA and protein levels in porcine aorta. In contrast to our hypothesis, we could not show any beneficial effects of a CR diet on vascular functions. The direction of changes of several proteins and genes may indicate disrupted ECM turnover (COL6A1 and COL6A2, MMP2, TIMP3, EFEMP1), increased inflammation and lipid accumulation (FFAR2), as well as decreased activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (TXNDC5, ORM1). On the other hand, the IN diet may counteract a highly pro-oxidant environment through the endothelin–NO axis (CALR, TCP1, HSP8, PDIA3, RCN2), fibrinolytic activity (ANXA2), anti-atherogenic (CAVIN-1) and anti-calcification (LMNA) properties, thus contributing to the maintenance of vascular homeostasis. Tropospheric ozone is an important atmospheric pollutant as well as an efficient greenhouse gas. Beijing is one of the cities with the most serious ozone pollution. However, long-term date of observed ozone in Beijing are limited. In this paper, we combine the measurements of the In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS), ozonesonde observations as well as the recently available ozone monitoring network observations to produce a unique data record of surface ozone (at 14:00 Beijing time) in Beijing from 1995 to 2020. Using this merged dataset, we investigate the variability in surface ozone in Beijing on multiple timescales. The long-term change is primarily characterized by a sudden drop in 2011–2012 with an insignificant linear trend during the full period. Based on CAM-chem model simulations, meteorological factors played important roles in the 2011–2012 ozone drop. Before and after this sudden drop, ozone levels in Beijing increased significantly by 0.42 ± 0.27 ppbv year−1 before 2011 and 0.43 ± 0.41 ppbv year−1 after 2013. We also found a substantial increase in the amplitude of the ozone annual cycle in Beijing, which has not been documented in previous studies. This is consistent with ozone increases in summer and ozone decreases in winter. In addition, the results by the Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) analysis indicate significant interannual variations in ozone levels in Beijing with different time oscillation periods, which may be associated with natural variabilities and subsequent changes in meteorological conditions. β-Hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB), a leucine metabolite, can increase skeletal muscle size and function. However, HMB may be less effective at improving muscle function in people with insufficient Vitamin D3 (25-OH-D < 30 ng/mL) which is common in middle-aged and older adults. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that combining HMB plus Vitamin D3 (HMB + D) supplementation would improve skeletal muscle size, composition, and function in middle-aged women. In a double-blinded fashion, women (53 ± 1 yrs, 26 ± 1 kg/m2, n = 43) were randomized to take placebo or HMB + D (3 g Calcium HMB + 2000 IU D per day) during 12 weeks of sedentary behavior (SED) or resistance exercise training (RET). On average, participants entered the study Vitamin D3 insufficient while HMB + D increased 25-OH-D to sufficient levels after 8 and 12 weeks. In SED, HMB + D prevented the loss of arm lean mass observed with placebo. HMB + D increased muscle volume and decreased intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) volume in the thigh compared to placebo but did not change muscle function. In RET, 12-weeks of HMB + D decreased IMAT compared to placebo but did not influence the increase in skeletal muscle volume or function. In summary, HMB + D decreased IMAT independent of exercise status and may prevent the loss or increase muscle size in a small cohort of sedentary middle-aged women. These results lend support to conduct a longer duration study with greater sample size to determine the validity of the observed positive effects of HMB + D on IMAT and skeletal muscle in a small cohort of middle-aged women. According to the American Cancer Society, roughly 54,000 new cases of oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancers have been detected in the United States of America in 2021, and they will cause about 10,850 deaths. The main therapies for cancer management, such as surgery and radio- and chemotherapy, have some own benefits, albeit they are often destructive for surrounding tissues; thus, deep investigations into non-surgical treatments for oral cavities are needed. Biologically active compounds (BACs) extracted from European Spruce needles were analyzed to determine the total phenolic and flavonoid content and were used as additional ingredients for oral hygiene products. An anti-proliferation investigation was carried out using extracts containing BACs with the use of several cell lines (cancer and a normal one). ESI-MS studies on BACs showed that luteolin, a natural flavonoid compound with anti-tumorigenic properties against various types of tumors, is the predominant component of the extracts. MTT, BrdU, and LIVE/DEAD studies demonstrated that BAC extracts obtained from Christmas tree needles possess anticancer properties against squamous cell carcinoma (with epithelial origins). We proved that BAC extracts contain high amounts of luteolin, which induces cytotoxicity toward cancer cells; along with their high selectivity, robustness, and nontoxicity, they are very promising materials in oral health applications. Retropharyngeal abscesses (RPAs) represent the group of deep space infections of the neck. Although RPA is a well-known condition, some aspects of it still may be challenging. Localization, symptoms, and etiology may confuse even the most experienced physicians. S. equi subspecies are zoonotic agents and cause multiple diseases in diverse animals. Infections in humans are rare. This report presents an extremely rare case of retropharyngeal abscess in a 12-year-old girl caused by an infection of Streptococcus equi subsp. equi. (1) Background: Interest in plant analogues for food of animal origin is increasing. There are some pro-healthy food ingredients, such as odd-chain, cyclic, and branched fatty acids, that are perceived to be characteristic for food of animal origin or fermented. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether commercial plant drinks can be valuable nutrient mediums for the multiplication of lactic acid bacteria and yeasts. The goal was also to determine their potential for the production of the above-mentioned groups of fatty acids; (2) Methods: Commercial almond and oat beverages were used to produce 16 new variants of fermented beverages using 3 strains of lactic acid bacteria and 5 strains of yeasts. The apparent viscosity, volatile compounds (e-nose), and fatty acids composition (GC-MS) were analyzed; (3) Results: After 48 h of fermentation, acidity increased in both types of drinks. The gelation of proteins in the majority of the almond beverages increased the apparent viscosity. The highest content of minor fatty acids was determined in oat beverages fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum PK 1.1 and Kluyveromyces marxianus KF 0001 and in the almond beverage fermented by Candida lipolytica CLP 0001. This paper examines consumers' objective knowledge of corporate social responsibility (CSR) for brands over different product categories, and investigates whether objective knowledge influences attitudes to CSR, and the relationships between demographics and objective knowledge. The research uses an innovative approach to examining consumer CSR knowledge via (largely) unprompted recall. The analysis uses independent judges to score actual consumer objective knowledge of the CSR of well-known brands against the policies and actions of the brand owner. The research reveals that participants' objective knowledge of CSR was limited or, in many cases, there was no knowledge. Further, the number and type of CSR policies did not influence overall evaluations of CSR. However, where objective knowledge was held, it did positively influence evaluations. The findings of the research direct managerial attention towards improvement of the communication of CSR, including using the research methodology here to evaluate the success of current communications. Eastern Indonesia, including the island of Halmahera, is a region with a high mineral potential, particularly Ni-Co, Au-Cu, and Ag ores, which are a globally important and critical source of raw materials (CRMs). The research was conducted within the framework of scientific cooperation between the Faculty of Geology, University of Warsaw (Poland), and PT Halmahera Resources Percasa Ltd. (Jakarta, Indonesia) Between the years of 2009 and 2011, 42 boreholes were drilled using an impact system (up to 15 m below surface) and 3 test pits (up to 8 m below surface). The presence of a laterite deposit containing Ni-Co mineralization was identified on the license area. The resources estimated in accordance with JORC Code, with a cut-off grade Ni ≥ 0.5%, equaling 185,510 t Ni and 17,747 t Co, with the stock of raw material amounting to 14.8 million t and with an average content of 1.00% Ni and 0.13% Co. The ore in the deposit has mixed character. To date, studies have shown the dominance of oxide ore, but saprolite composed of magnesium silicates was also identified in significant amount. The Ni mineralization in oxide ore (limonite) is bound to goethite and manganese minerals, while in the case of silicate (saprolite) ore, it occurs locally in the form of veins as well as zonally in the weathered serpentinites. Cobalt mineralization is almost entirely related to the Mn minerals that occur in the lower oxide zone. It has been found that both serpentinites and harzburgites (and possibly locally lherzolite) are the parent rocks for laterite deposit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
