Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly significant in modern warfare due to their versatility and capacity to perform high-risk missions without risking human lives. Beyond surveillance and reconnaissance, UAVs with jet propulsion and engagement capabilities are set to play roles similar to conventional jets. In various scenarios, military aircraft, drones, and UAVs face multiple threats while ground radar systems continuously monitor their positions. The interaction between these aerial platforms and radars causes temporal fluctuations in scattered echo power due to changes in aspect angle, impacting radar tracking accuracy. This study utilizes the potential radar cross-section (RCS) dynamics of an aircraft throughout its flight, using ground radar as a reference. Key factors influencing RCS include time, frequency, polarization, incident angle, physical geometry, and surface material, with a focus on the complex scattering geometry of the aircraft. The research evaluates the monostatic RCS case and examines the impact of attitude variations on RCS scintillation. Here, we present dynamic RCS modeling by examining the influence of flight dynamics on the RCS fluctuations of a UAV-sized aircraft. Dynamic RCS modeling is essential in creating a robust framework for operational analysis and developing effective countermeasure strategies, such as advanced active decoys. Especially in the cognitive radar concept, aircraft will desperately need more dynamic and adaptive active decoys. A methodology for calculating target aspect angles is proposed, using the aircraft's attitude and spherical position relative to the radar system. A realistic 6DoF (6 degrees of freedom) flight data time series generated by a commercial flight simulator is used to derive aircraft-to-radar aspect angles. By estimating aspect angles for a simulated complex flight trajectory, RCS scintillation throughout the flight is characterized. The study highlights the importance of maneuver parameters such as roll and pitch on the RCS measured at the radar by comparing datasets with and without these parameters. Significant differences were found, with a 32.44% difference in RCS data between full maneuver and no roll and pitch changes. Finally, proposed future research directions and insights are discussed. Frequency hopping (FH) is a well-known technique that is commonly used in communication systems owing to its many advantages, including its strong anti-jamming capability. In this technique, basically, radio signals are transmitted by switching the carrier between different frequency channels. As a result, the FH signal is not stationary; hence, its spectrum is expected to change over time. Therefore, the task of detection and parameter estimation of FH signals is very challenging in practice. To address this challenge, the study presented in this article proposes a method that detects and estimates the parameters of multiple narrowband FH signals. In the proposed method, first, short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is utilized to analyze FH signals, and a practical binarization process based on thresholding is used to detect FH signals. Then, a new algorithm is proposed to ensure that the center frequencies of the detected signals are successfully separated. Next, another algorithm is proposed to estimate the parameters of the detected signals. After estimating the parameters for the entire spectrum, an approach is used to detect FH signals. Lastly, the hop-clustering process is applied to separate the hops into groups without time overlap. The simulation results show that the proposed method can be an efficient way for the fast and accurate parameter estimation and detection of multiple narrowband FH signals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The automatic dependent surveillance broadcast (ADS-B) system is one of the key components of the next generation air transportation system (NextGen). ADS-B messages are transmitted in unencrypted plain text. This, however, causes significant security vulnerabilities, leaving the system open to various types of wireless attacks. In particular, the attacks can be intensified by simple hardware, like a software-defined radio (SDR). In order to provide high security against such attacks, radio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) approaches offer reasonable solutions. In this study, an RFF method is proposed for aircraft identification based on ADS-B transmissions. Initially, 3480 ADS-B samples were collected by an SDR from eight aircrafts. The power spectral density (PSD) features were then extracted from the filtered and normalized samples. Furthermore, the support vector machine (SVM) with three kernels (linear, polynomial, and radial basis function) was used to identify the aircraft. Moreover, the classification accuracy was demonstrated via varying channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels (10–30 dB). With a minimum accuracy of 92% achieved at lower SNR levels (10 dB), the proposed method based on SVM with a polynomial kernel offers an acceptable performance. Smart grids incorporate diverse power equipment used for energy optimization in intelligent cities. This equipment may use Internet of Things (IoT) devices and services in the future. To ensure stable operation of smart grids, cybersecurity of IoT is paramount. To this end, use of cryptographic security methods is prevalent in existing IoT. Non-cryptographic methods such as radio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) have been on the horizon for a few decades but are limited to academic research or military interest. RFF is a physical layer security feature that leverages hardware impairments in radios of IoT devices for classification and rogue device detection. The article discusses the potential of RFF in wireless communication of IoT devices to augment the cybersecurity of smart grids. The characteristics of a deep learning (DL)-aided RFF system are presented. Subsequently, a deployment framework of RFF for smart grids is presented with implementation and regulatory aspects. Vehicle classification has an important role in the efficient implementation of Internet of Things (IoT)-based intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications. Nowadays, because of their higher performance, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are mostly used for vehicle classification. However, the computational complexity of CNNs and high-resolution data provided by high-quality monitoring cameras can pose significant challenges due to limited IoT device resources. In order to address this issue, this study aims to propose a simple CNN-based model for vehicle classification in low-quality images collected by a standard security camera positioned far from a traffic scene under low lighting and different weather conditions. For this purpose, firstly, a new dataset that contains 4800 low-quality vehicle images with 100 × 100 pixels and a 96 dpi resolution was created. Then, the proposed model and several well-known CNN-based models were tested on the created dataset. The results demonstrate that the proposed model achieved 95.8% accuracy, outperforming Inception v3, Inception-ResNet v2, Xception, and VGG19. While DenseNet121 and ResNet50 achieved better accuracy, their complexity in terms of higher trainable parameters, layers, and training times might be a significant concern in practice. Hemodialysis (HD) patients should be screened for latent tuberculosis (TB) infection. We aimed to determine the frequency of latent TB infection in HD patients and to compare the effectiveness of the tests used. The files of 56 HD patients followed between 1 January 2021 and 1 October 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic data, the presence of the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, whether or not the patients had previously received treatment for TB before, the status of encountering a patient with active TB of patients over 18 years of age, without active tuberculosis and who had a T-SPOT.TB test or a Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) were obtained from the patient files. The presence of previous TB in a posterior–anterior (PA) chest X-ray was obtained by evaluating PA chest X-rays taken routinely. Of the patients, 60.7% (n = 34) were male and their mean age was 60.18 ± 14.85 years. The mean duration of dialysis was 6.43 ± 6.03 years, and 76.8% (n = 43) had 2 BCG scars. The T-SPOT.TB test was positive in 32.1% (n = 18). Only 20 patients (35.7%) had a TST and all had negative results. While the mean age of those with positive T-SPOT.TB results was higher (p = 0.003), the time taken to enter HD was shorter (p = 0.029). T-SPOT.TB test positivity was higher in the group that had encountered active TB patients (p = 0.033). However, no significant difference was found between T-SPOT.TB results according to BCG vaccine, albumin, urea and lymphocyte levels. Although T-SPOT.TB test positivity was higher in patients with a previous TB finding in a PA chest X-ray, there was no statistically significant difference (p = 0.093). The applicability of the TST in the diagnosis of latent TB infection in HD patients is difficult and it is likely to give false-negative results. The T-SPOT.TB test is not affected by the BCG vaccine and immunosuppression. Therefore, using the T-SPOT.TB test would be a more appropriate and practical approach in the diagnosis of latent TB in HD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In today's competitive environment, stimulating and maintaining customer engagement through gamified apps seems essential for gaining a sustainable competitive advantage. Consequently, gamification in marketing apps has garnered increased attention from companies interested in exploring how gaming processes and experiences can be utilized to create more engaging digital platforms. The objective of this study is to examine how consumer experiences and satisfaction with mobile gaming apps influence their purchase intentions and propensity to participate in word-of-mouth (WOM) communication. A total of 351 study participants who have used gamified mobile apps completed an online survey. The study results indicate that user experience with the gamified mobile apps has a positive influence on consumers' perceived value and satisfaction. Furthermore, perceived value and satisfaction mediate the relationships between gamified mobile app experience and marketing outcomes, specifically purchase intentions and WOM communication. Nowadays, Visible Light Communication (VLC) has gained much attention due to the significant advancements in Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology. However, the bandwidth of LEDs is one of the important concerns that limits the transmission rates in a VLC system. In order to eliminate this limitation, various types of equalization methods are employed. Among these, using digital pre-equalizers can be a good choice because of their simple and reusable structure. Therefore, several digital pre-equalizer methods have been proposed for VLC systems in the literature. Yet, there is no study in the literature that examines the implementation of digital pre-equalizers in a realistic VLC system based on the IEEE 802.15.13 standard. Hence, the purpose of this study is to propose digital pre-equalizers for VLC systems based on the IEEE 802.15.13 standard. For this purpose, firstly, a realistic channel model is built by collecting the signal recordings from a real 802.15.13-compliant VLC system. Then, the channel model is integrated into a VLC system modeled in MATLAB. This is followed by the design of two different digital pre-equalizers. Next, simulations are conducted to evaluate their feasibility in terms of the system's BER performance under bandwidth-efficient modulation schemes, such as 64-QAM and 256-QAM. Results show that, although the second pre-equalizer provides lower BERs, its design and implementation might be costly. Brain tumors have been the subject of research for many years. Brain tumors are typically classified into two main groups: benign and malignant tumors. The most common tumor type among malignant brain tumors is known as glioma. In the diagnosis of glioma, different imaging technologies could be used. Among these techniques, MRI is the most preferred imaging technology due to its high-resolution image data. However, the detection of gliomas from a huge set of MRI data could be challenging for the practitioners. In order to solve this concern, many Deep Learning (DL) models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been proposed to be used in detecting glioma. However, understanding which CNN architecture would work efficiently under various conditions including development environment or programming aspects as well as performance analysis has not been studied so far. In this research work, therefore, the purpose is to investigate the impact of two major programming environments (namely, MATLAB and Python) on the accuracy of CNN-based glioma detection from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images. To this end, experiments on the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) dataset (2016 and 2017) consisting of multiparametric magnetic MRI images are performed by implementing two popular CNN architectures, the three-dimensional (3D) U-Net and the V-Net in the programming environments. From the results, it is concluded that the use of Python with Google Colaboratory (Colab) might be highly useful in the implementation of CNN-based models for glioma detection. Moreover, the 3D U-Net model is found to perform better, attaining a high accuracy on the dataset. This study proposes a simple convolutional neural network (CNN)-based model for vehicle classification in low resolution surveillance images collected by a standard security camera installed distant from a traffic scene. In order to evaluate its effectiveness, the proposed model is tested on a new dataset containing tiny (100 × 100 pixels) and low resolution (96 dpi) vehicle images. The proposed model is then compared with well-known VGG16-based CNN models in terms of accuracy and complexity. Results indicate that although the well-known models provide higher accuracy, the proposed method offers an acceptable accuracy (92.9%) as well as a simple and lightweight solution for vehicle classification in low quality images. Thus, it is believed that this study might provide useful perception and understanding for further research on the use of standard low-cost cameras to enhance the ability of the intelligent systems such as intelligent transportation system applications. This study aimed to build progressively operating deep learning models that could detect meniscus injuries, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears and knee abnormalities in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Stanford Machine Learning Group MRNet dataset was employed in the study, which included MRI image indexes in the coronal, sagittal, and axial axes, each having 1130 trains and 120 validation items. The study is divided into three sections. In the first section, suitable images are selected to determine the disease in the image index based on the disturbance under examination. It is also used to identify images that have been misclassified or are noisy and/or damaged to the degree that they cannot be utilised for diagnosis in the first section. The study employed the 50-layer residual networks (ResNet50) model in this section. The second part of the study involves locating the region to be focused on based on the disturbance that is targeted to be diagnosed in the image under examination. A novel model was built by integrating the convolutional neural networks (CNN) and the denoising autoencoder models in the second section. The third section is dedicated to making a diagnosis of the disease. In this section, a novel ResNet50 model is trained to identify disease diagnoses or abnormalities, independent of the ResNet50 model used in the first section. Due to the environmental pollution threatening human life, clean water accessibility is one of the major global issues. In this context, in literature, there are many portable water disinfection systems utilizing ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV water disinfection systems employ piezoelectric-based electric power along with UV light-emitting diode (LED) sources. This paper elaborates on the detailed design and parametric optimization of a portable UV disinfection system. The proposed system aims to generate piezoelectric harvesting-based electrical power simply by shaking, and the generated power is then used to supply UV-LEDs for water disinfection. To this end, overall system parameters along with a physical-mathematical model of mechanical, electrical and biochemical aspects of the system are fully developed. Moreover, the main design parameters of the developed model are derived for optimal operation of the system by employing Genetic Algorithm (GA). Finally, optimal design parameters were identified for three different cost scenarios. The model can further be improved for practical implementation and mass production of the system. In the development of radiofrequency fingerprinting (RFF), one of the major challenges is to extract subtle and robust features from transmitted signals of wireless devices to be used in accurate identification of possible threats to the wireless network. To overcome this challenge, the use of the transient region of the transmitted signals could be one of the best options. For an efficient transient-based RFF, it is also necessary to accurately and precisely estimate the transient region of the signal. Here, the most important difficulty can be attributed to the detection of the transient starting point. Thus, several methods have been developed to detect transient start in the literature. Among them, the energy criterion method based on the instantaneous amplitude characteristics (EC- a) was shown to be superior in a recent study. The study reported the performance of the EC- a method for a set of Wi-Fi signals captured from a particular Wi-Fi device brand. However, since the transient pattern varies according to the type of wireless device, the device diversity needs to be increased to achieve more reliable results. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing the efficiency of the EC- a method across a large set of Wi-Fi signals captured from various Wi-Fi devices for the first time. To this end, Wi-Fi signals are first captured from smartphones of five brands, for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values defined as low (−3 to 5 dB), medium (5 to 15 dB), and high (15 to 30 dB). Then, the performance of the EC- a method and well-known methods was comparatively assessed, and the efficiency of the EC- a method was verified in terms of detection accuracy. This study aims to provide a simple approach to characterize the effects of scattering by human bodies in the vicinity of a short-range indoor link at 28 GHz while the link is fully blocked by another body. In the study, a street canyon propagation characterized by a four-ray model is incorporated to consider the human bodies. For this model, the received signal is assumed to be composed of a direct component that is exposed to shadowing due to a human body blocking the link and a multipath component due to reflections from human bodies around the link. In order to predict the attenuation due to shadowing, the double knife-edge diffraction (DKED) model is employed. Moreover, to predict the attenuation due to multipath, the reflected fields from the human bodies around the link are used. The measurements are compared with the simulations in order to evaluate the prediction accuracy of the model. The acceptable results achieved in this study suggest that this simple model might work correctly for short-range indoor links at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brands are facing significant pressures in globalized markets so as to communicate a consistent corporate identity to their customers. Accordingly, the established past of a brand should be considered a key resource by giving the organization a competitive advantage in the marketplace. This paper examines the relationship between brand heritage and consumers' purchase intentions of airline services and investigates the mediating roles of trust and loyalty. We conceptualize that brand heritage will have a positive effect on consumers' purchase intentions of airline services. Moreover, using the Commitment-Trust Theory (Morgan and Hunt, 1994), we hypothesize that brand trust and brand loyalty will mediate the relationship between brand heritage and purchase intentions. Data for the study (n = 567) is collected through personal interviews of airline passengers traveling from 10 different major airports in Turkey. Results reveal that brand heritage has a significant positive direct effect on purchase intensions; however, when the brand trust and brand loyalty constructs are introduced into the model, the direct effect becomes statistically insignificant, demonstrating full mediation roles of brand trust and brand loyalty on purchase intentions. Radio frequency fingerprinting (RFF) is one of the communication network's security techniques based on the identification of the unique features of RF transient signals. However, extracting these features could be burdensome, due to the nonstationary nature of transient signals. This may then adversely affect the accuracy of the identification of devices. Recently, it has been shown that the use of variational mode decomposition (VMD) in extracting features from Bluetooth (BT) transient signals offers an efficient way to improve the classification accuracy. To do this, VMD has been used to decompose transient signals into a series of band-limited modes, and higher order statistical (HOS) features are extracted from reconstructed transient signals. In this study, the performance bounds of VMD in RFF implementation are scrutinized. Firstly, HOS features are extracted from the band-limited modes, and then from the reconstructed transient signals directly. Performance comparison due to both HOS feature sets is presented. Moreover, the lower SNR bound within which the VMD can achieve acceptable accuracy in the classification of BT devices is determined. The approach has been tested experimentally with BT devices by employing a Linear Support Vector Machine (LSVM) classifier. According to the classification results, a higher classification performance is achieved (~4% higher) at lower SNR levels (−5–5 dB) when HOS features are extracted from band-limited modes in the implementation of VMD in RFF of BT devices.
