Forecasting the electricity market, even in the short term, is a difficult task, due to the nature of this commodity, the lack of storage capacity, and the multiplicity and volatility of factors that influence its price. The sensitivity of the market results in the appearance of anomalies in the market, during which forecasting models often break down. The aim of this paper is to present the possibility of using hybrid machine learning models to forecast the price of electricity, especially when such events occur. It includes the automatic detection of anomalies using three different switch types and two independent forecasting models, one for use during periods of stable markets and the other during periods of anomalies. The results of empirical tests conducted on data from the Polish energy market showed that the proposed solution improves the overall quality of prediction compared to using each model separately and significantly improves the quality of prediction during anomaly periods. Zirconium-based alloys are highly regarded by the research community for their exceptional corrosion resistance, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. In our work, we investigated two newly developed alloys, Zr42.42Cu41.18Al9.35Ag7.05 and Zr46.81Cu35.44Al10.09Ag7.66, in the form of ingots and ribbons. In the course of our investigation, we conducted a comprehensive structural and thermal analysis. In addition, an examination of the corrosion activity encompassing electrochemical studies and an analysis of the corrosion mechanisms was carried out. To further evaluate the performance of the materials, tests of their mechanical properties were performed, including microhardness and resistance to abrasive wear. Structural analysis showed that both alloys studied had a multiphase, crystalline structure with intermetallic phases. The samples in the form of ribbons showed improved corrosion resistance compared to that of the ingots. The ingot containing a higher content of copper Zr42.42Cu41.18Al9.35Ag7.05 was characterized by better corrosion resistance, while showing lower average hardness and a higher degree of abrasive wear based on SEM observations after pin-on-disc tests. Gluten-free bread is increasingly popular among individuals with celiac disease, and The incorporation of mushroom flour offers a novel method to enhance its nutritional profile, antioxidant content, and sensory properties. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and sensory characteristics of gluten-free bread with varying amounts of chaga mushroom flour (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%). The total contents of polyphenols and flavonoids were measured using a spectrophotometric method. Antioxidant activity was assessed through DPPH and FRAP methods, while textural properties were evaluated using the TPA test. Bread colour was analysed using the CIELab system, and sensory evaluation was performed by a panel of trained consumers. The results showed that gluten-free bread enriched with chaga flour had increased polyphenol and flavonoid content and enhanced antioxidant activity. The highest levels of polyphenols, flavonoids, DPPH, and FRAP activity were found in bread with 20% chaga. The addition of chaga mushroom significantly affected the bread's hardness, cohesiveness, and chewiness. Specifically, 20% chaga flour had the most pronounced effect on hardness and elasticity, while 15% chaga flour had the greatest impact on chewiness and cohesiveness. The bread's colour darkened with higher chaga concentrations. The results of sensory evaluation showed a negative correlation between consumer preferences and bread fortified with chaga mushroom flour. Background: Peripheral aneurysms, although known about for centuries, are challenging to monitor due to their asymptomatic nature. Advanced imaging has improved detection, which is crucial for preventing emergent complications. This five-year retrospective study from a single center aimed to evaluate the location, presentation, diagnosis, and management of 110 patients with aneurysms of the femoral and popliteal arteries of the lower limb. Materials and methods: The study included 71 true aneurysms and 39 pseudoaneurysms patients treated between 2018–2023. Treatment methods were based on aneurysm size, atherosclerosis severity, and operation risk. The study assessed patient demographics, surgical details, postoperative complications, and aneurysm characteristics. Results: Acute limb ischemia was more prevalent in true aneurysms (25.4% vs. 7.7%; p = 0.02). Aneurysmectomy was performed more frequently in pseudoaneurysms (87.2% vs. 54.9%; p < 0.001), while endovascular treatment and surgical bypass were more common in true aneurysms (Endovascular: 22.5% vs. 2.6%; p = 0.01; bypass: 21.1% vs. 0%; p < 0.001). Early postoperative complications occurred in 22.7% of patients. The 12-month freedom from reoperations (73.7% vs. 87%; p = 0.07), amputations (97.7% vs. 93.8%; p = 0.2), and graft stenosis (78.7% vs. 86.87%; p = 0.06) showed no significant differences between groups. Conclusions: Lower limb aneurysms often present with non-specific symptoms, leading to late diagnosis and life-threatening complications. Both open and endovascular treatments are feasible, though more research is needed for pseudoaneurysms. This article presents the results of research on the growth kinetics, microstructure (SEM/EDS/XRD), and corrosion behavior of Zn-5Al coatings obtained using a high-temperature hot dip process on B500B reinforcing steel. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was determined using the neutral salt spray (NSS) test (EN ISO 9227). Based on chemical composition tests in micro-areas (EDS) and phase composition tests (XRD), corrosion products formed on the coating surface after exposure to a corrosive environment containing chlorides were identified. In the outer layer of the coating, areas rich in Zn and Al were found, which were solid solutions of Al in Zn (α), while the diffusion layer was formed by a layer of Fe(Al,Zn)3 intermetallics. The growth kinetics of the coatings indicate the sequential growth of the diffusion layer, controlled by diffusion in the initial phase of growth, and the formation of a periodic layered structure with a longer immersion time. The NSS test showed an improved corrosion resistance of reinforcing bars with Zn-5Al coatings compared to a conventional hot-dip-galvanized zinc coating. The increase in corrosion resistance was caused by the formation of beneficial corrosion products: layered double hydroxides (LDH) based on Zn2+ and Al3+ cations and Cl− anions and simonkolleite—Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O. Magnesium and its alloys are attractive temporary implants due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. Moreover, Mg has good mechanical and osteoinductive properties. But magnesium and Mg alloys have one significant disadvantage: poor corrosion resistance in a physiological environment. Hence, a deposition of various layers on the surface of Mg alloys seems to be a good idea. The purpose of the article is to analyze the structure and morphology of two MgCa2Zn1 and MgCa2Zn1Gd3 alloys coated by SnO2 ALD (atomic layer deposition) films of various thickness. The studies were performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and an X-ray diffractometer. The corrosion activity of the thin films and substrate alloys in a chloride-rich Ringer's solution at 37 °C was also observed. The corrosion tests that include electrochemical, immersion measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were evaluated. The results indicated that SnO2 had a heterogeneous crystal structure. The surfaces of the thin films were rough with visible pores. The corrosion resistance of SnO2 measured in all corrosion tests was higher for the thicker films. The observations of corrosion products after immersion tests indicated that they were lamellar-shaped and mainly contained Mg, O, Ca, and Cl in a lower concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic posed numerous challenges to public health systems, particularly in antimicrobial stewardship. This study aimed to assess antibiotic consumption before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to evaluate the effectiveness of the implemented antimicrobial stewardship program. Methods: This retrospective study was carried out at the University Hospital in Krakow, Poland, between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020. A total of 80,639 patients were enrolled. Antibiotic usage was measured as the percentage of patients receiving antibiotics and the number of days of therapy (DOTs). The World Health Organization (WHO) methodology and Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) codes and AWaRe classification were utilized. The analyzed ATC antibiotic groups included penicillins (J01CA, J01CE, J01CF, J01CR, excluding piperacillin/tazobactam), piperacillin with tazobactam-beta-lactamase inhibitor (J01CR05), third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins (J01DD, J01DE), carbapenems (J01DH), macrolides (J01FA), fluoroquinolones (J01M), colistin (J01XB01), metronidazole (J01XD01) and others (J01DF, J01DI, J01E, J01G, J01XA, J01A). In the AWaRe classification, Access, Watch and Reserve groups of antibiotics were included. Results: In 2020, 79.2% of COVID-19 patients and 40.1% of non-COVID-19 patients were treated with antibiotics, compared to 28.8% in 2019. Also, in 2020, the antibiotic consumption in non-ICU COVID-19 patients was twice as high as in non-COVID-19 patients: 50.9 vs. 38.5 DOTs/100 patient days (pds). Conversely, in the ICU, antibiotic consumption in COVID-19 patients was 112.1 DOTs/100 pds compared to 248.9 DOTs/100 pds in non-COVID-19 patients. Significant increases were observed in the usage of third- and fourth-generation cephalosporins in 2020. The analysis according to the AWaRe system revealed the highest usage of the Watch group—ranging from 61.9% to 78.7%—and very high usage of the Reserve group—from 5.8% to 11.1%—in non COVID-19 and COVID-19 patients, respectively. Conclusions: Our findings highlight substantial issues with antibiotic use both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ammi majus L. (Apiaceae) is a medicinal plant with a well-documented history in phytotherapy. The aim of the present work was to isolate isopimpinellin (5,8-methoxypsoralen; IsoP) from the fruit of this plant and evaluate its biological activity against selected tumor cell lines. The methanol extract obtained with the use of an accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) method was the most suitable for the quantitative analysis of coumarins in the A. majus fruit matrix. The coumarin content was estimated by RP-HPLC/DAD, and the amount of IsoP was found to be 404.14 mg/100 g dry wt., constituting 24.56% of the total coumarin fraction (1.65 g/100 g). This, along with the presence of xanthotoxin (368.04 mg/100 g, 22.36%) and bergapten (253.05 mg/100 g, 15.38%), confirmed A. majus fruits as an excellent source of these compounds. IsoP was isolated (99.8% purity) by combined liquid chromatography/centrifugal partition chromatography (LC/CPC) and tested for the first time on its antiproliferative activity against human colorectal adenocarcinoma (HT29, SW620), osteosarcoma (Saos-2, HOS), and multiple myeloma (RPMI8226, U266) cell lines. MTT assay results (96 h incubation) demonstrated a dose- and cell line-dependent decrease in cell proliferation/viability, with the strongest effect of IsoP against the Saos-2 cell line (IC50; 42.59 µM), medium effect against U266, HT-29, and RPMI8226 (IC50 = 84.14, 95.53, and 105.0 µM, respectively), and very weak activity against invasive HOS (IC50; 321.6 µM) and SW620 (IC50; 711.30 µM) cells, as well as normal human skin fibroblasts (HSFs), with IC50; 410.7 µM. The mechanistic study on the Saos-2 cell line showed that IsoP was able to reduce DNA synthesis and trigger apoptosis via caspase-3 activation. In general, IsoP was found to have more potency towards cancerous cells (except for HOS and SW620) than against healthy cells. The Selective Index (SI) was determined, underlining the higher selectivity of IsoP towards cancer cells compared to healthy cells (SI = 9.62 against Saos-2). Myocarditis is characterized by an influx of inflammatory cells, predominantly of myeloid lineage. The progression of myocarditis to a dilated cardiomyopathy is markedly influenced by TGF-β signalling. Here, we investigate the role of TGF-β signalling in inflammatory cardiac macrophages in the development of myocarditis and post-inflammatory fibrosis. Experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM) was induced in the LysM-Cre × R26-stop-EYFP × Tgfbr2-fl/fl transgenic mice showing impaired TGF-β signalling in the myeloid lineage and the LysM-Cre × R26-stop-EYFP control mice. In EAM, immunization led to acute myocarditis on day 21, followed by cardiac fibrosis on day 40. Both strains showed a similar severity of myocarditis and the extent of cardiac fibrosis. On day 21 of EAM, an increase in cardiac inflammatory macrophages was observed in both strains. These cells were sorted and analysed for differential gene expression using whole-genome transcriptomics. The analysis revealed activation and regulation of the inflammatory response, particularly the production of both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines and cytokine receptors as TGF-β-dependent processes. The analysis of selected cytokines produced by bone marrow-derived macrophages confirmed their suppressed secretion. Background/Objectives: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) course may differ among individuals—in particular, those with comorbidities may have severe pneumonia, requiring oxygen supplementation or mechanical ventilation. Post-COVID-19 long-term structural changes in imaging studies can contribute to persistent respiratory disturbance. This study aimed to investigate COVID-19 sequels affecting the possibility of persistent structural lung tissue abnormalities and their influence on the respiratory function of peripheral airways and gas transfer. Methods: Patients were divided into two groups according to severity grades described by the World Health Organization. Among the 176 hospitalized patients were 154 patients with mask oxygen supplementation and 22 patients with high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) or mechanical ventilation. All tests were performed at 3, 6, and 9 months post-hospitalization. Results: Patients in the severe/critical group had lower lung volumes in FVC, FVC%, FEV1, FEV1%, LC, TLC%, and DLCO% at three months post-hospitalization. At 6 and 9 months, neither group had significant FVC and FEV1 value improvements. The MEF 25–75 values were not significantly higher in the mild/moderate group than in the severe/critical group at three months. There were weak significant correlations between FVC and FEV1, MEF50, MEF 75, plethysmography TLC, disturbances in DLCO, and total CT abnormalities in the severe/critical group at three months. In a mild/moderate group, there was a significant negative correlation between the spirometry, plethysmography parameters, and CT lesions in all periods. Conclusions: Persistent respiratory symptoms post-COVID-19 can result from fibrotic lung parenchyma and post-infectious stenotic small airway changes not visible in CT, probably due to persistent inflammation. Green roofs cool cities, clean the air, provide habitat, and manage stormwater. They are compelling tools to teach interconnected human-ecological systems. This study included the design, pilot, and evaluation of a fourth-grade science unit entitled "Raising the Green Roof", exploring these connections. Five classrooms in two Midwestern U.S. public elementary schools participated, and 4th-grade students (n = 73) drew systems models at three time points (212 models) and wrote their ideas. Qualitative content analyses of the models showed that learners were increasingly combining social systems (green roof infrastructure) with ecological systems (water cycle) across the unit. Students also increasingly evidenced specific knowledge as they progressed through the unit. The analysis of student models revealed that most student confusion is related to built environment aspects (e.g., how water moves from building roofs to municipal waterways). Results of the study suggest the potential for teaching socio-hydrologic systems thinking at the fourth-grade level. The findings emphasize the need to enhance built environment education for youth in science units that aspire to connect features of the built environment, such as green roofs, with ecology. According to the WHO target product profile for COVID-19 vaccines, the vaccine in development should be indicated for active immunisation in all populations. Therefore, PT Bio Farma developed a candidate vaccine in a subunit protein recombinant platform to help overcome the issue. This trial was an observer-blind, randomised, prospective intervention study. This study targeted individuals who had received complete primary doses of the authorised/approved COVID-19 vaccine. The groups were divided into the primary inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac®) group, the primary viral vector vaccine (ChAdOx1) group, and the primary mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2) group that received the recombinant protein (IndoVac®). The groups were compared with the control and primary mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2). The participants enrolled in the study were from two primary care centres in Bandung City and three primary care centres in Denpasar City. A total of 696 participants were enrolled from 1 September to 31 October 2022. The demographic characteristics of the all-vaccine group showed a uniform distribution. The results showed that, compared with the control, the investigational product had inferior effectiveness 14 days after the booster dose was administered. However, 28 days after the booster dose, the investigational product exhibited non-inferior effectiveness compared with the primary groups that received CoronaVac® (GMR 0.76 (0.57–0.99)) and ChAdOx1 (GMR 0.72 (0.56–59.93)), but the BNT162b2 group (GMR 0.61 (0.39–0.94)) was inferior to the control. At 12 months follow-up after the booster dose, three serious adverse events (SAEs) were reported in three participants, with causality not correlated with the investigated products. Neither AEs of special interest nor severe COVID-19 cases were reported throughout the follow-up period; thus, the IndoVac® vaccine as a booster was immunogenic and safe. Until the 6-month follow-up after the booster dose, the IndoVac® vaccine was well tolerated and all reported AEs resolved. Individual differences in the response to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy can be observed among patients. The genetic background may be the cause of this variability. The current study focused on the impact of genetic variants on the effectiveness of PRP. The aim of the present study was to analyze the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of the platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA) gene on the effectiveness of treating lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET) with PRP. The treatment's efficacy was analyzed over time (2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 52 and 104 weeks after the PRP injection) on 107 patients using patient-reported outcome measures (PROM) and achievement of a minimal clinically important difference (MCID). Four SNPs of the PDGFRA gene (rs7668190, rs6554164, rs869978 and rs1316926) were genotyped using the TaqMan assay method. Patients with the AA genotypes of the rs7668190 and the rs1316926 polymorphisms, as well as carriers of the T allele of rs6554164 showed greater effectiveness of PRP therapy than carriers of other genotypes. Moreover, the studied SNPs influenced the platelets' parameters both in whole blood and in PRP. These results showed that PDGFRA gene polymorphisms affect the effectiveness of PRP treatment. Featured Application: The proposed solution of fasteners made of corrugated steel sheet and shot nails can be used as the connector for steel–concrete composite floor beams. The sheet provides stay-in-place formwork for a monolithic reinforced concrete slab. Furthermore, the sheet in the shape of the dovetail caused the connection between the steel I-beam and the concrete slab. The connectors are easy to fabricate. Any special mounting equipment that requires high-current electrical power is not necessary. Because shot nails have very wide applications, nailing devices are available in almost every construction factory and on construction sites. The shape of a such cross-section of the metal sheet improves its stability during installation compared to a flat metal sheet. An additional advantage is the ability to easily suspend the finishing elements by using dedicated hangers fixed in the fold of sheet. The paper presents an analysis of the innovative connector for manufacturing a steel–concrete composite beam. The connector consists of a corrugated metal sheet in the shape of a dovetail and shot nails. The nails are shot through the sheet fold into the flange of the steel I-section. Experimental studies of push-out tests were carried out. The conducted tests proved that the proposed solution can be applied as the fastener for steel–concrete composite beams for the construction of ceilings in utility public buildings with small beam's span. Considering the criteria presented in the Eurocode 4 standard and the results of the experiments, it was proven that all analyzed types of fasteners are ductile. The connector made of sheet with a thickness of 1.00 mm and 2 nails is characterized by a breaking load of 30.83 kN. The load-bearing capacity of the fastener can be adjusted by changing the corrugated sheet thickness and changing the number of nails shot in the single fold of the sheet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) stands as the most common congenital facial anomaly, stemming from multifactorial causes. Objective: Our study aimed to ascertain the prevalence and characteristics of cleft palates, identify associated risk factors to inform prevention and prenatal detection for early intervention, and assess postoperative rehabilitation protocols for cleft palates. Design: This study employs a retrospective descriptive and clinical approach. Patients: The study includes 103 children with cleft palates treated at the Department of Head and Neck Surgery Clinic for Children and Young Adults, Department of Clinical Pediatrics, University of Warmia and Mazury. Methods: We conducted a thorough evaluation of records, considering variables such as sex, cleft type, maternal occupation, parental education, and family history of clefts. Data analysis was carried out using R software version GPL-3 and ordinal logistic regression analyses. Results: Notably, children born to mothers who experienced significant stress during pregnancy exhibited a 9.4-fold increase in the odds of having bilateral cleft palates. Conversely, no substantial evidence was found to support the influence of the child's sex, birth order, body mass, maternal exposure to workplace toxins, infections, or drug toxicity on the dependent variable. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that children with parents who have a history of clefts and those with less educated mothers are more likely to develop bilateral cleft palates. Additionally, children born to mothers experiencing stress during pregnancy face an increased risk of bilateral cleft palates. Simple Summary: Deep-learning-based radiogenomic (DLR) models show promising performance in assisting with lung cancer care. The primary aim of our study was to develop and validate a DLR model to predict EGFR mutation status in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Using 990 patients from two clinical trials, the study employed a machine learning pipeline that analysed CT images with manually selected tumour regions. Two deep convolutional neural networks segmented lung masses and nodules from 3D regions of the CT image. The combined radiomics and DLR model achieved 88% accuracy in predicting EGFR mutations, outperforming individual models. The semantic features extracted from CT images also contributed to accurate predictions. The study suggests that this AI-based model in combination with CT semantic features could serve as a non-invasive biomarker that aids in predicting EGFR mutation status with significant accuracy. Purpose: The authors aimed to develop and validate deep-learning-based radiogenomic (DLR) models and radiomic signatures to predict the EGFR mutation in patients with NSCLC, and to assess the semantic and clinical features that can contribute to detecting EGFR mutations. Methods: Using 990 patients from two NSCLC trials, we employed an end-to-end pipeline analyzing CT images without precise segmentation. Two 3D convolutional neural networks segmented lung masses and nodules. Results: The combined radiomics and DLR model achieved an AUC of 0.88 ± 0.03 in predicting EGFR mutation status, outperforming individual models. Semantic features further improved the model's accuracy, with an AUC of 0.88 ± 0.05. CT semantic features that were found to be significantly associated with EGFR mutations were pure solid tumours with no associated ground glass component (p < 0.03), the absence of peripheral emphysema (p < 0.03), the presence of pleural retraction (p = 0.004), the presence of fissure attachment (p = 0.001), the presence of metastatic nodules in both the tumour-containing lobe (p = 0.001) and the non-tumour-containing lobe (p = 0.001), the presence of ipsilateral pleural effusion (p = 0.04), and average enhancement of the tumour mass above 54 HU (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This AI-based radiomics and DLR model demonstrated high accuracy in predicting EGFR mutation, serving as a non-invasive and user-friendly imaging biomarker for EGFR mutation status prediction. Staphylococcus schleiferi and Staphylococcus coagulans, closely related bacterial species within the Staphylococcus genus, present a challenge in classification and diagnosis due to their close genetic proximity and overlapping phenotypic features. Moreover, our understanding of the virulence mechanisms in staphylococcal species, beyond the extensively studied Staphylococcus aureus, remains limited, underscoring the importance of using comparative data to enhance our insights into virulence within these bacterial species. This study employed a comprehensive approach, utilizing comparative genomics, to identify genomic distinctions between S. schleiferi and S. coagulans, aiming to address the challenges in the accurate classification and diagnosis of these organisms and identify unique features. Whole genome sequencing was performed on six clinical isolates, and their genomes were compared to identify variations in gene content and virulence factors. De novo assembly and annotation revealed two samples as S. coagulans and four samples as S. schleiferi. Analysis of the core genomes revealed conserved regions crucial for defining species identity, while accessory genomic elements contained unique genes, possibly impacting the pathogenicity of the species. Zn-Al-Mg-Si coatings are an excellent alternative to conventional hot-dip galvanizing coatings. Their high corrosion resistance in corrosive environments containing chlorides and CO2 is well recognized. But sulfur dioxide is also an important stimulator of corrosion in the atmospheric environment. This article presents the results of microstructure (SEM/EDS/XRD) and corrosion behavior tests of Zn-Al-Mg-Si coatings obtained by a double hot-dip method on HSLA steel. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was determined in the sulfur dioxide test with general condensation of moisture (EN ISO 6988). In the corrosion test, Zn-Al-Mg-Si coatings showed twofold smaller weight loss compared to conventional hot-dip zinc coatings. It was found that the corrosion behavior of coatings was influenced by the structural components revealed in the outer layer: Al-rich dendritic and interdendritic areas with Zn/MgZn2 eutectic, MgZn2 intermetallic and Si precipitates and their electrochemical nature. The increase in corrosion resistance was caused by the formation of beneficial corrosion products: layered double hydroxides (LDHs) based on divalent Mg2+ and Zn2+ cations, trivalent Al3+ cations and SO42− anions, and zinc hydroxysulfate—Zn4SO4(OH)6∙5H2O. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the pomace drying methods (freeze-drying and convection-drying) and their percentage (0–10%) on selected physicochemical properties of gluten-free bread. The contents of nutrients (protein, fiber, fat, ash, and carbohydrates), bioactive compounds, antioxidant properties, acidity, baking efficiency, and moisture of the obtained products were determined. Fortifying the bread with raspberry pomace resulted in a change in fiber content from 18.13% d. b. (control sample) up to 19.97% d. b. (10% of freeze-dried pomace), and a change in the fat and ash content in the bread from 5.74% and 2.83% d. b. (control sample) to 7.18% and 3.12% d. b. (10% of freeze-dried pomace). The content of carbohydrates decreased after adding raspberry pomace to the bread, from 65.71% d. b. (control sample) to 63.68% d. b. (5% of freeze-dried pomace). The research carried out also showed that the introduction of 10% freeze-dried raspberry pomace increased the total polyphenol content by 81.75% and the antioxidant properties defined by the ABTS method by 159.54% and by the DPPH method by 96.43% compared to the control bread. The introduction of pomace resulted in a significant reduction in the total baking loss, from 15.1% to 10.62%, and an increase in the total titratable acidity of the crumb, from 2.13 mL NaOH/10 g d. b to 7.78 mL NaOH/10 g d. b. Principal component analysis highlighted a marked effect of the drying method and content of raspberry pomace on the quality values of gluten-free bread. This study aimed to identify microRNAs (miRNAs) whose expression levels are altered by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection in women with epithelial ovarian neoplasms. MiRNA expression was quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction, while HR-HPV DNA was quantified using digital-droplet PCR. Analysis of 11 miRNAs demonstrated significantly lower hsa-miR-25-5p expression in HPV-infected compared to uninfected ovarian tissues (p = 0.0405), while differences in miRNA expression in corresponding serum were statistically insignificant. The expression of hsa-miR-218-5p in ovarian tumors was significantly higher in high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) cases than in other neoplasms (p = 0.0166). In addition, hsa-miR-218-5p was significantly upregulated, whereas hsa-miR-191-5p was significantly downregulated in tissues with stage III/IV FIGO (p = 0.0009 and p = 0.0305, respectively). Using unsupervised clustering, we identified three unique patient groups with significantly varied frequencies of HPV16/18-positive samples and varied miRNA expression profiles. In multivariate analysis, high expression of hsa-miR-16-5p was an independent prognostic factor for poor overall survival (p = 0.0068). This preliminary analysis showed the changes in miRNA expression in ovarian neoplasms during HPV infection and those collected from HGSOCs or patients with advanced disease. Simple Summary: Post-transfusion iron overload is a common side effect of anticancer treatment, including leukemias. We showed that serum ferritin levels could be valuable prognostic marker of death in children with AML and ALL. Importantly, improved survival of leukemia patients was found to be associated with lower ferritin values before therapy. It is noteworthy that the observed phenomenon was dependent on the cancer type, sex, and age of the studied patients. Transfusions of packed red blood cells (PRBCs), given due to an oncological disease and its acute complications, are an indispensable part of anticancer therapy. However, they can lead to post-transfusion iron overload. The study aim was to evaluate the role of ferritin as a nonspecific marker of leukemic growth and marker of transfusion-related iron overload. We performed a longitudinal study of PRBC transfusions and changes in ferritin concentrations during the oncological treatment of 135 patients with childhood acute lymphoblastic and acute myeloblastic leukemia (ALL and AML, median age 5.62 years). At the diagnosis, 41% of patients had a ferritin level over 500 ng/mL, and 14% of patients had a ferritin level over 1000 ng/mL. At the cessation of the treatment, 80% of the children had serum ferritin (SF) over 500 ng/mL, and 31% had SF over 1000 ng/mL. There was no significant difference between SF at the beginning of the treatment between ALL and AML patients, but children with AML finished treatment with statistically higher SF. AML patients had also statistically higher number of transfusions. We found statistically significant positive correlations between ferritin and age, and weight and units of transfused blood. Serum ferritin at the moment of diagnosis can be a useful marker of leukemic growth, but high levels of SF are connected with iron overload in both AML and ALL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bike sharing systems have become a sustainable alternative to motorized private transport in urban areas. However, users often face high costs and availability issues due to the operational effort required to redistribute bicycles between stations. For addressing those issues, the AuRa (Autonomes Rad, Eng. Autonomous Bicycle) project introduces a new mobility offer in terms of an on-demand, shared-use, self-driving cargo bikes service (OSABS) that enables automated redistribution. Within the project, we develop different order management and rebalancing strategies and validate them using simulation models. One prerequisite for this is sound demand scenarios. However, due to the novelty of OSABS, there is currently no information about its utilization. Consequently, the objective of this study was to develop an approach for defining OSABS demand scenarios in a temporally and spatially disaggregated manner as an input for simulation models. Therefore, we first derived city-wide usage potentials of OSABS from a survey on mobility needs. We then spatially and temporally disaggregated the determined usage likelihood using travel demand matrices and usage patterns from a conventional bike-sharing system, respectively. Finally, we performed cluster analyses on the resulting annual demand to summarize sections of the yearly profile into representative units and thus reduce the simulation effort. As we applied this approach as a case study to the city of Magdeburg, Germany, we could show that our methodology enables the determination of reasonable OSABS demand scenarios from scratch. Furthermore, we were able to show that annual usage patterns of (conventional) bike sharing systems can be modeled by using demand data for only eight representative weeks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is implicated in both the etiology of tendinopathy and its healing process. Polymorphic variants of the VEGFA gene exhibit varied expression, which can influence the phenotype and treatment effectiveness. The aim of the present study was to analyze the influence of VEGFA gene variants on the effectiveness of tennis elbow therapy using platelet-rich plasma (PRP), measured through common patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). A cohort of 107 patients (132 elbows) with tennis elbow was prospectively analyzed, with a two-year follow-up (at weeks 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 52, and 104 after PRP injection). PROMs values were compared between variants of five VEGFA gene polymorphisms (rs699947 A>C, rs2010963 C>G, rs1413711 C>T, rs3024998 C>T and rs3025021 C>T) at each follow-up point. Patients with genotypes GG (rs2010963) and CC (rs3024998) had better response to PRP therapy (significantly fewer symptoms and limitations in the upper limb compared to carriers of alleles C and T, respectively). Polymorphisms influenced also selected hematological parameters. VEGFA gene polymorphisms (rs2010963 and rs3024998) appear to be significant treatment modifiers for tendinopathy, and their genotyping may serve as an effective tool for personalized patient selection for PRP therapy. Background: Socio-economic changes prompt companies to disclose their sustainable development activities in the reporting, showing that they balance three capitals—economic, environmental, and social. On the other hand, while formulating strategies and goals, they consider the company's widely understood environment, where its stakeholders are essential. As a result, the transparency and usefulness of the reported information are limited. Methods: The study employed financial statements' content analysis and a statistical method (rank Spearman correlation, Shapiro–Wilk test). The percentage of change in critical areas for reporting transparency on financial assets was analyzed, before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Results: The research indicated that the identified critical reporting areas concerning financial assets showed a greater value change during the pandemic. Correlations between the accounting value of the company and the same critical reporting areas were significant. Conclusion: It has been shown that larger companies can use more accounting policy instruments; therefore, the reporting transparency on financial assets is potentially lower for these companies. Cereal bars are so-called convenience foods. Consumers value these products as a healthier alternative to traditional chocolate bars. Since these snacks usually contain added dried fruit, they have high potential for the utilisation of waste materials from the fruit industry. The study aimed to determine the effect of fortification of cereal bars with grape and apple pomace on their nutritional value, physical properties, and sensory quality. The control recipe was modified by replacing 10 or 20 g of sultanas with apple or grape pomace. The fortification with these food by-products resulted in a significant increase in the moisture content of the products, an increase in soluble fibre content, and a decrease in the level of antioxidant compounds. The strength of the cereal bars supplemented with grape and apple pomace increased. In addition, the panellists noticed a colour difference compared to the unmodified product (2 < ΔE < 5). A positive effect of the addition of the fruit pomace on the visual characteristics of the cereal bars was also observed. No changes were observed in the tastiness of the product. On the other hand, the aroma of the modified products and the texture of the bars containing the apple residue were less acceptable. In conclusion, cereal bars containing grape pomace and up to 10 g of apple pomace are characterised by high soluble dietary fibre content and desirable sensory and mechanical properties and are therefore recommended for industrial production. The functionalization of the aromatic backbone allows the improvement of the electrical properties of acene molecules in the amorphous layered structures of organic thin films. In the present work, we discuss the electric properties of the stable, amorphous, vacuum-deposited films prepared from five highly substituted 10-RO-acenes of various electronic properties, i.e., two extreme electron-donor (1,3-dioxa-cyclopenta[b]) anthracenes with all RO substituents, two anthracene carbaldehydes and one benzo[b]carbazole carbaldehyde possessing both electron-donor and acceptor substituents. The hole mobility data were obtained using subsequent steady state space charge limited currents (SCLC) and Time of Flight (TOF) measurements, performed on the same sample and these were then compared with the results of theoretical hole mobility calculations obtained using the Density Functional Theory (DFT) quantum—chemical calculations using the Marcus–Hush theory. The study shows a good agreement between the theoretical and experimental values which allows for the quick and quantitative estimation of Einstein's mobility values for highly substituted 10-RO anthracene and benzo[b]carbazole based on chemical calculations. This agreement also proves that the transport of holes follows the hopping mechanism. The theoretical calculations indicate that the reorganization energy plays a decisive role in the transport of holes in the amorphous layers of highly substituted hetero(acenes). The popularity of sustainability as a research topic in different areas of organisational functioning is marked by the number of studies on the topic. Significantly less research is addressing the factors that fundamentally influence the functioning of organisations. Among these factors, this paper will review the criteria for sustainable leadership. Competition in the economy has made it necessary to build sustainability capabilities in all areas of business, of which the practice of sustainable leadership is a fundamental requirement for making strategic decisions. This paper aims to examine the thinking, leadership styles, and decisions of leaders of organisations in everyday practice based on the pyramid logic of sustainable leadership. In this research, structured interviews with managers of Hungarian (32) and Polish (28) organisations were evaluated using the 'Voyant tools' 2.6.9. software. The results show that there is a significant difference between the Hungarian and Polish leadership mindsets, with both samples only partially meeting the expectations of what can be considered a sustainable leadership style in the spirit of the 'Honeybee' approach. Out of the 14 basic elements of the pyramid, the leaders of both nations reach the desired level in five cases. The low distribution of hydrophobic anticancer drugs in patients is one of the biggest limitations during conventional chemotherapy. SDS-based polyelectrolyte multicore nanocarriers (NCs) prepared according to the layer by layer (LbL) procedure can release paclitaxel (PTX), and selectively kill cancer cells. Our main objective was to verify the antitumor properties of PTX-loaded NCs and to examine whether the drug encapsulated in these NCs retained its cytotoxic properties. The cytotoxicity of the prepared nanosystems was tested on MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 tumour cells and the non-cancerous HMEC-1 cell line in vitro. Confocal microscopy, spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry, flow cytometry, and RT PCR techniques were used to define the typical hallmarks of apoptosis. It was demonstrated that PTX encapsulated in the tested NCs exhibited similar cytotoxicity to the free drug, especially in the triple negative breast cancer model. Moreover, SDS/PLL/PTX and SDS/PLL/PGA/PTX significantly reduced DNA synthesis. In addition, PTX-loaded NCs triggered apoptosis and upregulated the transcription of Bax, AIF, cytochrome-c, and caspase-3 mRNA. Our data demonstrate that these novel polyelectrolyte multicore NCs coated with PLL or PLL/PGA are good candidates for delivering PTX. Our discoveries have prominent implications for the possible choice of newly synthesized, SDS-based polyelectrolyte multicore NCs in different anticancer therapeutic applications. Worldwide, there is a significant amount of food waste, highlighting the need to reduce waste throughout the production process. This study investigated the impact of incorporating vegetable processing waste from tomatoes (TP) and bell peppers (PB) on dough characteristics and bread quality, with concentrations of TP and PB ranging from 3% to 12% based on flour weight. The addition of TP and PB influenced the farinograph characteristics, increasing water absorption, dough development, and softening while reducing stability time. However, the changes in bread quality, including baking yield, loss, volume, and crumb porosity, were not significant. The texture properties, such as hardness, chewiness, and cohesiveness of the crumb, showed no significant changes within the supplemented levels up to 9%. Additionally, the TP and PB had a significant impact on the color of the bread crumb, increasing redness and yellowness, particularly with PB. Fortification with TP and PB up to 9% resulted in baking characteristics comparable to 100% wheat bread. The addition of TP and PB changed nutrient content, particularly dietary fiber, without significantly altering the caloric value of the bread. However, semi-consumer sensory evaluation indicated a decrease in aroma and taste when PB exceeded 9%, and a similar effect on taste was indicated when TP exceeded 9%. This research investigates the influence of the scale effect on the bearing capacity of fine-grained subsoil under undrained conditions. The analyses were conducted based on laboratory tests of silty clay. Uniformly compacted samples were subjected to an unconfined compression test. The research was performed on cylindrical specimens. Three different variants of the diameter D (38 mm, 70 mm, 100 mm) and the corresponding height H = 2D were analyzed. Based on the tests results, the unconfined compression strength qu was determined, and from this, the undrained shear strength cu was calculated. The obtained results showed a clear decrease in cu with increasing sample size. However, in the existing reference documents, there are no specific guidelines for calculations of bearing capacity with consideration of sample size effect on the soil shear strength. Therefore, this study utilized the laboratory soil test data to calculate the bearing capacity of undrained subsoil, taking into account the seismic impacts, with a particular focus on spread foundations. Nintedanib is a disease-modifying agent licensed for the treatment of IPF. Data on Polish experience with nintedanib in IPF are lacking. The present study aimed to describe the safety and efficacy profiles of nintedanib in a large real-world cohort of Polish patients with IPF. This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational study of IPF patients treated with nintedanib between March 2018 and October 2021. Data collection included baseline clinical characteristics, results of pulmonary function tests (PFTs), and a six-minute walk test (6MWT). Longitudinal data on PFTs, 6MWT, adverse drug reactions (ADRs), and treatment persistence were also retrieved. A total of 501 patients (70% male) with a median age of 70.9 years (IQR 65–75.7) were included in this study. Patients were followed on treatment for a median of 15 months (7–25.5). The majority of patients (66.7%) were treated with the full recommended dose of nintedanib and 33.3% of patients were treated with a reduced dose of a drug. Intermittent dose reductions or drug interruptions were needed in 20% of patients. Over up to 3 years of follow-up, pulmonary function remained largely stable with the minority experiencing disease progression. The most frequent ADRs included diarrhea (45.3%), decreased appetite (29.9%), abdominal discomfort (29.5%), weight loss (32.1%), nausea (20.8%), fatigue (19.2%), increased liver aminotransferases (15.4%), and vomiting (8.2%). A total of 203 patients (40.5%) discontinued nintedanib treatment due to diverse reasons including ADRs (10.2%), death (11.6%), disease progression (4.6%), patient's request (6.6%), and neoplastic disease (2.2%). This real-world study of a large cohort of Polish patients with IPF demonstrates that nintedanib therapy is safe, and is associated with acceptable tolerance and disease stabilization. Background: The TNM (tumor, node, metastasis) staging system is important for the successful treatment of head and neck cancers (HNCs). This study aimed to evaluate the concordance between clinical and pathological T and N stages in patients with HNCs in Poland. Methods: In this single-center retrospective study, clinical and pathological TNM staging data on 203 patients undergoing surgical treatment for HNC between 2011 and 2018 were collected and compared. The study group was classified as underdiagnosed, overdiagnosed, or correctly diagnosed with HNC based on pathological TNM staging. The concordance between clinical and pathological staging was evaluated using the kappa coefficient. Results: Clinical and pathological TNM staging showed concordance in 59.9% of patients for primary tumor (T) and in 79.3% of patients for lymph node (N) classifications. Moderate agreement between the clinical and pathological stages was shown for stage T, while substantial agreement was revealed for stage N. The size and extent of the tumor were underestimated or overestimated in 73 of the 182 patients (40.1%), while lymph node involvement was downstaged in 11 of the 53 patients (20.7%). Conclusions: The disparities between clinical and pathological staging of HNC demonstrate the need for standardization in physical and pathological examinations, as well as radiographic imaging. This paper compares approaches to music key detection based on popular key-profiles with a new key detection method that utilizes the concept of the signature of fifths. The signature of fifths is a geometrical music harmonic-content descriptor. Depending on the scenario, it may reflect either the multiplicities of occurrences or the aggregated durations of individual pitch-classes of the chromatic scale in a given fragment of music. In this study, we compare the efficacies of a few strictly correlational key recognition approaches based on music key-profiles (i.e., Krumhansl–Kessler, Temperley, and Albrecht–Shanahan) with a new method that implements the concept of the signature of fifths. All the experiments were performed in a collection of music pieces comprised of preludes by J. S. Bach (The Well-Tempered Clavier-Book I), preludes by F. Chopin (Op. 28), and songs by The Beatles (from the album A Hard Day's Night). In the scenario implementing the aggregate durations of individual pitch-classes, based on the analysis of the shortest initial fragments of music for which the key was indicated in all the considered approaches, the key detection efficacy obtained with the method using the signature of fifths was greater than the efficacies obtained with the strictly correlational approaches utilizing key-profiles (on average by 9.27 pp). In the case of the analogous analysis carried out for the scenario implementing the multiplicities of occurrences of individual pitch-classes, on average, greater efficacy was observed for the strictly correlational approaches based on key-profiles (by 2.7 pp). The conducted experiments confirmed the new key-detecting method offers advantages in computational simplicity, stability of decision making, and the ability to successfully determine the key based on a very short fragment of music. The aim of this study was to examine how light intensity and quality affect the photosynthetic apparatus of Cyanidioschyzon merolae cells by modulating the structure and function of phycobilisomes. Cells were grown in equal amounts of white, blue, red, and yellow light of low (LL) and high (HL) intensity. Biochemical characterization, fluorescence emission, and oxygen exchange were used to investigate selected cellular physiological parameters. It was found that the allophycocyanin content was sensitive only to light intensity, whereas the phycocynin content was also sensitive to light quality. Furthermore, the concentration of the PSI core protein was not affected by the intensity or quality of the growth light, but the concentration of the PSII core D1 protein was. Finally, the amount of ATP and ADP was lower in HL than LL. In our opinion, both light intensity and quality are main factors that play an important regulatory role in acclimatization/adaptation of C. merolae to environmental changes, and this is achieved by balancing the amounts of thylakoid membrane and phycobilisome proteins, the energy level, and the photosynthetic and respiratory activity. In the hot dip galvanizing process, steel products are immersed in a liquid zinc bath. The contact of steel with liquid zinc causes the corrosion of the steel as a result of Fe dissolution processes in the liquid. If the dissolution process is carried out in a controlled manner, it results in the formation of a coating. Uncontrolled dissolution leads to the degradation of the steel surface. This article presents the results of research into the influence of Bi and Sn additions to zinc baths on the corrosion of steel in liquid zinc. Corrosion tests were carried out under conditions of kinetic dissolution using the rotating disc method. The kinetic dissolution constants of steel with different Si contents in Zn, Zn-0.5Bi and Zn-2Sn baths were determined. It was found that the addition of Bi and Sn lowers the value of the dissolution constant and may act as an inhibitor of Fe dissolution in liquid zinc. Based on the measurements and the determined value of the dissolution constant, the activation energy of kinetic dissolution was determined. It was found that in the temperature range of 440–480 °C, the addition of Bi and Sn increases the value of dissolution activation energy, which reduces the intensity of Fe transfer to the zinc bath. Critically ill COVID-19 patients requiring mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit are at risk of developing invasive candidiasis. In this study we aimed to (1) characterize oral cultivable mycobiota of mechanically ventilated adult COVID-19 patients in an ICU setting by sampling four distinct oral niches in two fixed time points with regards to oral health status, (2) investigate Candida spp. infections in this population, and (3) compare oral mycobiota with selected bacteriobiota strains during the observation in the ICU. We recruited 56 adult COVID-19 patients who qualified for mechanical ventilation. Patients received either standard or extended oral care procedures with tooth brushing. Oral samples were taken first within 36 h and after 7 days of intubation. Yeast-like fungi were identified by MALDI/TOF mass spectrometry. Yeast infection cases were retrospectively analyzed. Candida spp. in oral sampling was identified in 80.4% and 75.7%, C. albicans in 57.1% and 61.1%, and non-albicans Candida species in 48.2% and 47.2% patients at baseline and follow-up, respectively. There were no differences in the overall CFU counts of Candida spp. species and individual Candida species in oral samples, both at baseline and follow-up. At baseline, a higher prevalence of Candida spp. was associated with a higher identification rate of Lactobacillus spp. (64.4% vs. 27.3%, p = 0.041). At follow-up, there was a borderline lower prevalence of Candida spp. in patients with Lactobacillus spp. identified (57.1% vs. 87.0%, p = 0.057). The incidence rate of candidiasis was 5.4% and the incidence density was 3.1/1000 pds. In conclusion, non-albicans Candida species in oral samples were identified in nearly half of patients. Oral health was moderately impaired. A high incidence of yeast infections, including invasive cases, in patients hospitalized in the ICU due to COVID-19 and requiring mechanical ventilation was noted. The Association of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region is a critical contributor to global development from an environmental perspective. This study has reviewed carbon emissions from energy generation, influence factors from the population, economic growth and renewable energy, emission and energy intensity projection, spatial distribution characteristics, and decarbonization strategy. This work utilizes a comparison methodology between ASEAN countries in the emission intensity and energy intensity in the future projection of electricity conditions in 2030 or 2040, as well as opportunities for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as determined by the national policies of each government. The results show that Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia produce 79.7% of the electricity in the ASEAN region. As a developing country, Indonesia has the largest population and gross domestic product (GDP) but has the highest predicted emission intensity, of 0.97 CO2e/MWh, in 2030. Vietnam is predicted to have an emission intensity of about 3.56t-CO2e/cap and 0.747t-CO2e/GDP in 2030. Vietnam is expected to increase in energy intensity to 1241 MWh/GDP, while Brunei Darussalam has a high energy intensity of 11.35 MWh/cap. However, the capacity of solar power plants (more than 11 GW) and wind-power plants (2384 MW) have generally increased in ASEAN from 2015 to 2019, indicating the positive development of renewable energy source (RES) use. The national policies strongly influence the estimated GHG emission in ASEAN by aggressively replacing fossil fuels with RESs. Support, via government policies, can reduce the cost of electricity generation from RESs is needed to increase and enhance the installment of clean power generation systems. The calcareous xerothermic grasslands of the Festuco-Brometea class are among the most endangered Natura 2000 sites in Europe. The greatest threats include a lack of grazing, secondary succession, and invasive alien and expansive native species. The abandonment of such grasslands is caused by the low nutritional value of biomass, as well as by difficult habitat conditions. The aim of this study was to assess the physiological responses of native sheep breeds to hard environmental conditions when grazing in Natura 2000 habitats and to confirm the hypothesis that native sheep of the Świniarka and Uhruska breeds can be used to protect valuable natural habitats. The analysed grasslands were characterised by very difficult climatic and edaphic conditions and a low fodder value for sheep. Grazing in environmentally valuable areas, sometimes poor in fodder, did not adversely affect the welfare of grazed sheep. In both the Uhruska and Świniarka breeds, there were no indicators for heat or nutritional stress, but physiological changes were observed in the animals' adaptation to new environmental conditions. Despite poor fodder positions, Świniarka sheep improved their condition and body weight. Fluctuations in indicators showing an adaptation process were also visible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A modern enterprise can use changes in its environment as an opportunity to create new products and services, constituting a competitive advantage. This ability is in turn determined by its adopted business strategy. The aim of this study is an attempt to find the relationship between business strategies used in industrial enterprises and their effects in the form of various types of innovations. Our research covered innovative manufacturing companies from selected EU member states and Turkey. Two research hypotheses were formulated: H1: The importance of business strategies to innovative companies is different between countries. H2: The clusters identified are not homogeneous in terms of the innovation outputs achieved by the companies. Our analyses are based on data derived from the CIS 2018 for the period of 2016–2018. To verify these hypotheses, statistical methods were used, including a cluster analysis. The results of the analysis indicate that the manufacturing companies in the surveyed countries apply various combinations of business strategies, which may translate into results in terms of innovation. Simple Summary: The increasing popularity of food products from farmers' markets among consumers has been attributed to their belief that such food is more likely to be organic and free of harmful chemicals. The study's objective was to measure antibiotic residues in "antibiotic-free" products sold at farmers' markets in East Tennessee. We purchased "antibiotic-free" beef, egg, and honey products from farmers' markets in East Tennessee and tested them for tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues. All tested food products contained varying levels of antibiotic residues. Median concentrations of these residues were below the maximum residue levels set in the U.S. for beef and eggs, indicating that these products are considered safe for consumption. But no residue limit has been set for honey products in the U.S. Because these "antibiotic-free" products should not have contained residues given their label, further research is necessary to determine the source of the residues in these foods. Foods that contain antibiotic residues have potential adverse health effects on consumers and provide selective pressure for the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study's objective was to measure tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues in beef, eggs, and honey sold as "antibiotic-free" at farmers' markets in East Tennessee (East TN) in the United States (U.S.). Between July and September 2020, 36 "antibiotic-free" food products (9 beef, 18 egg, and 9 honey products) were purchased from East TN farmers' markets and tested for tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (cELISA). All beef, egg, and honey products had tetracycline residue; the median concentrations were 51.75, 30.25, and 77.86 µg/kg, respectively. Sulfonamide residue was present in every sample of beef. Of 18 eggs, 11 eggs had detectable sulfonamide residue; the median concentrations were 3.50 and 1.22 µg/kg in beef and eggs, respectively. Each sample of beef and honey contained erythromycin residue; the median concentrations were 3.67 and 0.68 µg/kg, respectively. Overall, the median concentrations of tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues were below the maximum residue levels (MRLs) set in the U.S. for beef and eggs. Thus, the beef and eggs sold as "antibiotic-free" in East TN farmers' markets can be considered safe for consumption. Safety determination for honey could not be made because MRLs have not been set for honey in the U.S. Because these residues should not be expected in "antibiotic-free" food products, it is important to further investigate the potential sources of these residues in these products. The application-attractive form of TiO2, CeO2 and CuO-based open-cell foam supported catalysts was designed to investigate their catalytic performance in oxidation of two model volatile organic compounds—methanol and dichloromethane. TiO2-CeO2, TiO2-CuO and TiO2-CeO2-CuO catalysts as thin films were deposited on VUKOPOR®A ceramic foam using a reverse micelles-controlled sol-gel method, dip-coating and calcination. Three prepared catalytic foams were investigated via light-off tests in methanol and dichloromethane oxidation in the temperature range of 45–400 °C and 100–500 °C, respectively, at GHSV of 11, 600 h−1, which fits to semi-pilot/industrial conditions. TiO2-CuO@VUKOPOR®A foam showed the best catalytic activity and CO2 yield in methanol oxidation due to its low weak Lewis acidity, high weak basicity and easily reducible CuO species and proved good catalytic stability within 20 h test. TiO2-CeO2-CuO@VUKOPOR®A foam was the best in dichloromethane oxidation. Despite of its lower catalytic activity compared to TiO2-CeO2@VUKOPOR®A foam, its highly-reducible -O-Cu-Ce-O- active surface sites led to the highest CO2 yield and the highest weak Lewis acidity contributed to the highest HCl yield. This article presents the microstructure (SEM) and corrosion behavior of ZnAl12Mg3Si0.3 (ZAMS) coatings obtained by the double hot-dip method on Sebisty steel with increased strength. On the basis of chemical composition studies in micro-areas (EDS) and phase composition studies (XRD), structural components of the coating and corrosion products formed on the coating surface after exposure to the neutral salt spray (NSS) test (EN ISO 9227) were identified. The presence of the Fe(Al,Si,Zn)3 intermetallic phase was found in the Fe-Al intermetallic layer, while in the outer layer, dendrites rich in Al and Zn were identified. In these dendrites, the eutectics of Zn/MgZn2 and precipitates of the MgZn2 phase and Si were located. The NSS test showed better corrosion resistance of ZAMS coatings compared to conventional zinc hot-dip coatings. The increase in corrosion resistance is due to the formation of favorable corrosion products: simonkolleite—Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O and hydrozincite—Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2, and the presence of the MgZn2 phase in the coating, which is more anodic than other structural components. In this work, NiAl-xWC (x = 0 − 90 wt.% WC) intermetallic-based composites were successfully synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) and a hot-pressing approach. As initial powders, a mixture of nickel, aluminum and tungsten carbide was used. The phase changes in analyzed systems after mechanical alloying and hot pressing were evaluated by an X-ray diffraction method. Scanning electron microscopy and hardness test examination were used for evaluating microstructure and properties for all fabricated systems from the initial powder to the final sinter stage. The basic sinter properties were evaluated to estimate their relative densities. Synthesized and fabricated NiAl-xWC composites showed an interesting relationship between the structure of the constituting phases, analyzed by planimetric and structural methods and sintering temperature. The analyzed relationship proves that the structural order reconstructed by sintering strongly depends on the initial formulation and its decomposition after MA processing. The results confirm that it is possible to obtain an intermetallic NiAl phase after 10 h of MA. For processed powder mixtures, the results showed that increased WC content intensifies fragmentation and structural disintegration. The final structure of the sinters fabricated in lower (800 °C) and higher temperature regimes (1100 °C), consisted of recrystallized NiAl and WC phases. The macro hardness of sinters obtained at 1100 °C increased from 409 HV (NiAl) to 1800 HV (NiAl + 90% WC). Obtained results reveal a new applicable perspective in the field of intermetallic-based composites and remain highly anticipated for possible application in severe-wear or high-temperature conditions. In this study, we aim to assess and examine cognitive functions in Parkinson's Disease patients using EEG recordings, with a central focus on characteristics associated with a cognitive decline. Based on neuropsychological evaluation using Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment, and Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III, 98 participants were divided into three cognitive groups. All the particpants of the study underwent EEG recordings with spectral analysis. The results revealed an increase in the absolute theta power in patients with Parkinson's disease dementia (PD-D) compared to cognitively normal status (PD-CogN, p = 0.00997 ) and a decrease in global relative beta power in PD-D compared to PD-CogN ( p = 0.0413 ). An increase in theta relative power in the left temporal region ( p = 0.0262 ), left occipital region ( p = 0.0109 ), and right occipital region ( p = 0.0221 ) were observed in PD-D compared to PD-N. The global alpha/theta ratio and global power spectral ratio significantly decreased in PD-D compared to PD-N (p = 0.001). In conclusion, the increase in relative theta power and the decrease in relative beta power are characteristic changes in EEG recordings in PD patients with cognitive impairment. Identifying these changes can be a useful biomarker and a complementary tool in the neuropsychological diagnosis of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's Disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their cargo have been studied intensively as potential sources of biomarkers in HIV infection; however, their DNA content, particularly the mitochondrial portion (mtDNA), remains largely unexplored. It is well known that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and prolonged antiretroviral therapy (ART) lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced mtDNA copy in cells and tissues. Moreover, mtDNA is a well-known damage-associated molecular pattern molecule that could potentially contribute to increased immune activation, oxidative stress, and inflammatory response. We investigated the mtDNA content of large and small plasma EVs in persons living with HIV (PLWH) and its implications for viral replication, ART use, and immune status. Venous blood was collected from 196 PLWH, ART-treated or ART-naïve (66 with ongoing viral replication, ≥20 copies/mL), and from 53 HIV-negative persons, all recruited at five HIV testing or treatment centers in Burkina Faso. Large and small plasma EVs were purified and counted, and mtDNA level was measured by RT-qPCR. Regardless of HIV status, mtDNA was more abundant in large than small EVs. It was more abundant in EVs of viremic than aviremic and control participants and tended to be more abundant in participants treated with Tenofovir compared with Zidovudine. When ART treatment was longer than six months and viremia was undetectable, no variation in EV mtDNA content versus CD4 and CD8 count or CD4/CD8 ratio was observed. However, mtDNA in large and small EVs decreased with years of HIV infection and ART. Our results highlight the impact of viral replication and ART on large and small EVs' mtDNA content. This article presents the history of zinc, its production and demand. The quantity of zinc production, both primary zinc from ores and concentrates, and secondary zinc from scrap and zinc-rich waste, was discussed. A comprehensive economic analysis covers zinc prices in the years 1960–2021. The basic methods of obtaining zinc from ores, including pyrometallurgical (Imperial Smelting Process ISP, Kivcet, Ausmelt) and hydrometallurgical (roasting–leaching–electrowinning RLE, atmospheric direct leaching ADL, Engitec Zinc Extraction EZINEX, zinc pressure leach) and their short characteristics, are presented. The global zinc market and the main areas of its application were analyzed. Technologies used for the recovery of zinc from scrap are discussed along with their characteristics. Galvanized steel is the main source of secondary zinc, both in the galvanizing process and in the remelting of galvanized steel. It can be easily recycled with other scrap steel in the electric arc furnace (EAF) for steel production. Currently, with high volatility in the price of zinc, as well as its natural resources in the earth's crust, recycling is an important activity, despite the fact that zinc concentrates have a relatively constant chemical composition, while the resulting zinc waste contains zinc in varying amounts.
