Highly porous layered double hydroxide (LDH) and its calcined mixed metal oxide (MMO) were obtained by utilizing egg white (EW) as a biogenic porous template. The LDH was prepared through coprecipitation under the existence of a beaten EW meringue, and the corresponding MMO was obtained by calcining LDH at 500 °C. According to X-ray diffraction, the crystal structure of LDH and MMO was well-developed with or without EW. In contrast, the crystallinity analyses and microscopic investigations clearly showed differences in the particle orientation in the presence of EW; the protein arrangement in the EW foam induced the ordered orientation of LDH platelets along proteins, resulting in well-developed inter-particle pores. As a result, the distinctive particle arrangement in EW-templated samples compared with non-templated ones showed dramatically enhanced specific surface area and porosity. The nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm exhibited that the high specific surface area was attributed to the homogeneous nanopores in EW-templated LDH and MMO, which originated from the sacrificial role of the EW. Metal oxides (MOs) having Mg and Al with Mg/Al ratios of 1, 2, 3, and 4 were synthesized via calcination of the layered double hydroxides (LDH). The X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that all the MO consisted of periclase (MgO) crystallite with comparable crystallinity regardless of the metal ratio. According to the 27Al magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, the phase transformation from LDH to MO upon calcination facilitated the evolution of the Al3+ ions with unsaturated coordination at the surface of MO. The specific surface area values of MOs were not significantly different from each other, ranging between 100 and 200 m2/g, suggesting that the metal ratio did not strongly influence the porous structure of MO. The temperature-dependent desorption of ammonia demonstrated that the Lewis acidity of the Al-rich MOs was the largest with an Mg/Al ratio of 1, attributed to the efficient exposure of the surface-active site Al3+-O2− pairs. The acidity of heterogenous Al-rich MOs significantly increased with the exposed tetrahedral Al site on the surface and dramatically diminished when the molar ratio (Mg/Al) was over two. In modern electric vehicles, electrical failure has become a critical problem that reduces the lifetime of traction motors. Moreover, traction motors with high-voltage and high-speed systems for a high power density have been aggravating the shaft voltage problems. This study identifies that direct-oil-cooling systems exacerbate this problem. To address this, an analytical method for calculating parasitic capacitance is proposed to determine the effects of cooling oil in a traction motor with a direct-oil-cooling system. Capacitance equivalent circuits are configured based on whether the slot is submerged in the cooling oil. In addition, an electric field decomposition method is applied to analyze the distortion of the electric field by the structure of the conduction parts in the motor. The results indicate that the parasitic capacitances of the traction motor are increased by the influence of the cooling oil resulting in an increase in the shaft voltage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a robust optimization algorithm customized for the optimal design of electric machines. The proposed algorithm, termed "robust explorative particle swarm optimization" (RePSO), is a hybrid algorithm that affords high accuracy and a high search speed when determining robust optimal solutions. To ensure the robustness of the determined optimal solution, RePSO employs the rate of change of the cost function. When this rate is high, the cost function appears as a steep curve, indicating low robustness; in contrast, when the rate is low, the cost function takes the form of a gradual curve, indicating high robustness. For verification, the performance of the proposed algorithm was compared with those of the conventional methods of robust particle swarm optimization and explorative particle swarm optimization with a Gaussian basis test function. The target performance of the traction motor for the optimal design was derived using a simulation of vehicle driving performance. Based on the simulation results, the target performance of the traction motor requires a maximum torque and power of 294 Nm and 88 kW, respectively. The base model, an 8-pole 72-slot permanent magnet synchronous machine, was designed considering the target performance. Accordingly, an optimal design was realized using the proposed algorithm. The cost function for this optimal design was selected such that the torque ripple, total harmonic distortion of back-electromotive force, and cogging torque were minimized. Finally, experiments were performed on the manufactured optimal model. The robustness and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm were validated by comparing the analytical and experimental results. In this study, a current source analysis method considering the inverter switching frequency is proposed to improve the precision of loss analysis of a traction motor for a hybrid electric vehicle. Because the iron loss of the traction motor is sensitively influenced by input current fluctuations, the current source analysis using the actual current obtained from an inverter is the ideal method for accurate analysis. However, as the traction motor and inverter should be manufactured to obtain the real current, the traction motor is generally designed based on an ideal current source analysis. Our proposed method is an analytic technique that fits the loss of a traction motor similar to the actual loss by injecting harmonics of the same order of the inverter switching frequency into the ideal input current. Our method is compared with the analysis of the ideal current source to assess the difference in loss. In addition, a test motor was manufactured, and an efficiency test was conducted to compare the efficiency and verify the effectiveness of our method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a novel method for reducing the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors employed as refrigerator fan blowers is proposed. A single-phase claw-pole motor has the advantages of low manufacturing cost, easy manufacturing, and a high number of turns. However, in such motors, current delays occur owing to a high inductance; therefore, it is necessary to merge the back-electromotive force and current phases into the same phase using the phase advance method. Additionally, a single-phase motor exhibits dead torque and zero torque at an electrical angle of 180° owing to its electrical characteristics, and the dead torque deteriorates the average torque and torque ripple characteristics of the motor. In this study, a novel method is proposed to make the air gap asymmetrical by tilting the claw to reduce the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors. An asymmetric air gap allows the cogging torque to eliminate the dead torque caused by alignment torques, causing the torque ripple to decrease. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the proposed model is compared with a base model via three-dimensional finite element analysis. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for establishing an efficiency map of interior permanent-magnet synchronous motors that are used for electric vehicle propulsion, by employing the finite-element method (FEM) and a neural network (NN) to reduce the analysis time. The electro-magnetic analysis of motors using the FEM, particularly iron loss analysis, is significantly time-consuming owing to the nonlinearity and the post-processing. Moreover, to obtain an efficiency map, a data map of the d-q flux linkages based on the d-q currents should be established. At this stage, we compute the flux densities in all the elements, and they are learned by the NN to obtain a function of the d-q currents. Subsequently, the iron losses at all operating points are calculated using the learned data via the harmonic loss method. The results of the proposed method indicate that the time required to obtain the efficiency map is reduced; furthermore, the results are validated via a comparison with the FEM results. Mixed metal oxide (MMO) with relatively homogeneous mesopores was successfully obtained by calcination and reconstruction of albumin-templated layered double hydroxide (LDH). The aggregation degree of albumin-template was controlled by adjusting two different synthesis routes, coprecipitation and reconstruction. X-ray diffraction patterns and scanning electron microscopic images indicated that crystal growth of LDH was fairly limited during albumin-templated coprecipitation due to the aggregation. On the hand, crystal growth along the lateral direction was facilitated in albumin-templated reconstruction due to the homogeneous distribution of proteins moiety. Different state of albumin during LDH synthesis influenced the local disorder and porous structure of calcination product, MMO. The N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms demonstrated that calcination on reconstructed LDH produced MMO with large specific surface area and narrow distribution of mesopores compared with calcination of coprecipitated LDH. A layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based anticancer delivery system was investigated in terms of crystalline phase, particle size, hydrodynamic radius, zeta potential, etc. through in vitro and in vivo study. Size controlled LDH with anticancer drug methotrexate (MTX) incorporation was successfully prepared through step-by-step hydrothermal reaction and ion-exchange reaction. The MTX-LDH was determined to have a neutral surface charge and strong agglomeration in the neutral aqueous condition due to the surface adsorbed MTX; however, the existence of proteins in the media dramatically reduced agglomeration, resulting in the hydrodynamic radius of MTX-LDH being similar to the primary particle size. The protein fluorescence quenching assay exhibited that MTX readily reduced the fluorescence of proteins, suggesting that the interaction between MTX and proteins was strong. On the other hand, MTX-LDH showed much less binding constant to proteins compared with MTX, implying that the protein interaction of MTX was effectively blocked by the LDH carrier. The in vivo hemolysis assay after intravenous injection of MTX-LDH showed neither significant reduction in red blood cell number nor membrane damage. Furthermore, the morphology of red blood cells in a mouse model did not change upon MTX-LDH injection. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the MTX-LDH particles were attached on the blood cells without serious denaturation of cellular morphology, taking advantage of the cell hitchhiking property.
