Foreseeing the failure of important unstable volumes is a major concern in the Alps, especially due to the presence of people and infrastructures in the valleys. The use of monitoring and remote sensing techniques is aimed at detecting potential instabilities and the combination of several techniques permits the cross-validation of the detected movements. Supplemented with field mapping and structural analysis, it is possible to define possible scenarios of rupture in terms of volume, mechanisms of failure and susceptibility. A combined observation strategy was applied to the study of major instability located in the Ticinese Alps (Switzerland), Cima del Simano, where the monitoring started in 2006 with the measurement of opened cracks with extensometers. Since 2021, the monitoring has been completed by LiDAR, satellite and GB-InSAR observations and structural analysis. Here, slow but constant movements of about 7 mm/yr were detected along with rockfall activities near the Simano summit. Eight failure scenarios of various sizes ranging from 2.3 × 105 m3 to 51 × 106 m3, various mechanisms (toppling, planar, wedge and circular sliding) and various occurrence probabilities were defined based on the topography and the monitoring results and by applying a Slope Local Base Level (SLBL) algorithm. Weather acquisition campaigns by means of thermologgers were also conducted to suggest possible causes that lead to the observed movements and to suggest the evolution of the instabilities with actual and future climate changes. The reliable in situ quantification of rock mass fracturing and engineering quality is critical for slope stability, surface mining and rock engineering applications, yet it remains difficult due to the heterogeneous nature of fracture networks. We propose a method to quantify and map the slope-scale geomechanical quality of fractured rock masses using infrared thermography (IRT). We use the Mt. Gorsa quarry (Trentino, Italy) as a field laboratory to upscale a physics-based approach, which was developed in the laboratory, to in situ conditions, including the effects of fracture heterogeneity, environmental conditions and IRT limitations. We reconstructed the slope in 3D using UAV photogrammetry, characterized the rock mass quality in the field at selected outcrops in terms of the Geological Strength Index (GSI) and measured their cooling behavior through 18h time-lapse IRT surveys. With ad hoc field experiments, we developed a novel procedure to correct IRT data in outdoor environments with complex topography. This allowed for a spatially distributed quantification of the rock mass surface cooling behavior in terms of a Curve Shape Parameter (CSP). Using non-linear regression, we established a quantitative CSP-GSI relationship, which allowed for the CSP to be translated into GSI maps. Rockfall simulations are often performed at various levels of detail depending on the required safety margins of rockfall-hazard-related assessments. As a pseudo benchmark, the simulation results from different models can be put side-by-side and compared with reconstructed rockfall trajectories, and mapped deposited block fragments from real events. This allows for assessing the objectivity, predictability, and sensitivity of the models. For this exercise, mapped data of past events from the Mel de la Niva site are used in this paper for a qualitative comparison with simulation results obtained from early calibration stages of the Flow-R 2.0.9, Rockyfor3D 5.2.15 and RAMMS::ROCKFALL 1.6.70 software. The large block fragments, reaching hundreds of megajoules during their fall, greatly exceed the rockfall energies of the empirical databases used for the development of most rockfall models. The comparison for this challenging site shows that the models could be improved and that combining the use of software programs with different behaviors could be a workaround in the interim. The findings also highlight the inconvenient importance of calibrating the simulations on a per-site basis from onsite observations. To complement this process, a back calculation tool is briefly described and provided. This work also emphasizes the need to better understand rockfall dynamics to help improve rebound models. This research paper presents a comprehensive approach to investigating dry granular collapses in three dimensions, by combining analytical, numerical, and experimental methods. The experimental investigation utilised a novel apparatus to study granular collapses in the laboratory. It is demonstrated that a quasistatic understanding of granular collapses can accurately predict the final normalised run-out distances for dynamic granular collapses. Our approach involved establishing a correlation between the angle of repose and the initial aspect ratio of the granular column. It is also shown that the material point method (MPM) is suitable for modelling granular collapses in three dimensions. Our in-house solver was further validated using experimental evidence under an explicit formulation, resulting in good agreement between the numerical and experimental results. The InfraRed Thermography (IRT) technique is gaining increasing popularity in the geosciences. Although several studies on the use of this technique for rock mass characterization were reported in the literature, its applicability is challenging in complex environments, characterized by poor accessibility, lithological heterogeneity, karst features and disturbances, such as vegetation and human activities. This paper reports the results of specific tests carried out to explore the application of IRT methods, supported by UAV surveys, for rock mass characterization in complex conditions. In detail, a 24-h monitoring was performed on an appropriate case study to assess which type of information can be collected and what issues can be expected. The results of the thermograms were compared with data reported in the literature and discussed. A novel method to detect correlations between the temperature profiles at the air-rock interfaces and the rock mass properties is presented. The author's models revealed that the detection of landslide sources provided accurate results, while the extraction of the runout areas achieved excellent accuracies. Lai [[11]] performed an automated data-mining procedure to differentiate the landslide sources and runout zones of landslides triggered by Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan. The article focuses on the use of three-dimensional (3D) remote sensing techniques for the investigation diverse geo-hazards. Topics discussed include use of 3D point clouds for the investigation of Earth surface processes, investigation of dynamic surface processes such as lava flows, investigation of rocky cliffs shaped by sea erosion, investigation of geohazards along transportation corridors, assessing seismic hazard on analysis of channel offsets and morphotectonic features.

This study presents a point cloud de-noising and calibration approach that takes advantage of point redundancy in both space and time (4D). The purpose is to detect displacements using terrestrial laser scanner data at the sub-mm scale or smaller, similar to radar systems, for the study of very small natural changes, i.e., pre-failure deformation in rock slopes, small-scale failures or talus flux. The algorithm calculates distances using a multi-scale normal distance approach and uses a set of calibration point clouds to remove systematic errors. The median is used to filter distance values for a neighbourhood in space and time to reduce random type errors. The use of space and time neighbours does need to be optimized to the signal being studied, in order to avoid smoothing in either spatial or temporal domains. This is demonstrated in the application of the algorithm to synthetic and experimental case examples. Optimum combinations of space and time neighbours in practical applications can lead to an improvement of an order or two of magnitude in the level of detection for change, which will greatly improve our ability to detect small changes in many disciplines, such as rock slope pre-failure deformation, deformation in civil infrastructure and small-scale geomorphological change. This paper presents the current state and development of a prototype web-GIS (Geographic Information System) decision support platform intended for application in natural hazards and risk management, mainly for floods and landslides. This web platform uses open-source geospatial software and technologies, particularly the Boundless (formerly OpenGeo) framework and its client side software development kit (SDK). The main purpose of the platform is to assist the experts and stakeholders in the decision-making process for evaluation and selection of different risk management strategies through an interactive participation approach, integrating web-GIS interface with decision support tool based on a compromise programming approach. The access rights and functionality of the platform are varied depending on the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in managing the risk. The application of the prototype platform is demonstrated based on an example case study site: Malborghetto Valbruna municipality of North-Eastern Italy where flash floods and landslides are frequent with major events having occurred in 2003. Quantitative characterization of discontinuities is fundamental to define the mechanical behavior of discontinuous rock masses. Several techniques for the semi-automatic and automatic extraction of discontinuities and their properties from raw or processed point clouds have been introduced in the literature to overcome the limits of conventional field surveys and improve data accuracy. However, most of these techniques do not allow characterizing flat or subvertical outcrops because planar surfaces are difficult to detect within point clouds in these circumstances, with the drawback of undersampling the data and providing inappropriate results. In this case, 2D analysis on the fracture traces are more appropriate. Nevertheless, to our knowledge, few methods to perform quantitative analyses on discontinuities from orthorectified photos are publicly available and do not provide a complete characterization. We implemented scanline and window sampling methods in a digital environment to characterize rock masses affected by discontinuities perpendicular to the bedding from trace maps, thus exploiting the potentiality of remote sensing techniques for subvertical and low-relief outcrops. The routine, named QDC-2D (Quantitative Discontinuity Characterization, 2D) was compiled in MATLAB by testing a synthetic dataset and a real case study, from which a high-resolution orthophoto was obtained by means of Structure from Motion technique. Starting from a trace map, the routine semi-automatically classifies the discontinuity sets and calculates their mean spacing, frequency, trace length, and persistence. The fracture network is characterized by means of trace length, intensity, and density estimators. The block volume and shape are also estimated by adding information on the third dimension. The results of the 2D analysis agree with the input used to produce the synthetic dataset and with the data collected in the field by means of conventional geostructural and geomechanical techniques, ensuring the procedure's reliability. Rock slope failures in urban areas may represent a serious hazard for human life, as well as private and public property, even on the occasion of sporadic episodes. Prevention and mitigation measures indispensably require a proper rock mass characterization, which is often achieved by means of time-consuming, costly and dangerous field surveys. In the last decades, remote sensing devices such as high-resolution digital cameras, laser scanners and drones have been widely used as supplementary techniques for rock slope analysis and monitoring, especially in poorly accessible areas, or in sites of large extension. Although several methods for rock mass characterization by means of remote sensing techniques have been reported in specific studies, there are very few contributions that focused on comparing the different methods in an attempt to establish their advantages and limitations. With this study, we performed digital photogrammetry, Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle surveys on a cliff located in a popular tourist attraction site, characterized by complex geological and geomorphological settings, as well as by disturbance elements such as vegetation and human activities. For each point cloud, we applied geostructural analysis by means of semi-automatic methods, and then compared multi-temporal acquisitions for cliff monitoring. By quantitative comparison of the results and validation by means of conventional geostructural field surveys, the pros and cons of each method were outlined in attempt to depict the conditions and goals the different techniques seem to be more suitable for. Numerous 3D rockfall simulation models use coarse gridded digital terrain model (DTM raster) as their topography input. Artificial surface roughness is often added to overcome the loss of details that occurs during the gridding process. Together with the use of sensitive energy damping parameters, they provide great freedom to the user at the expense of the objectivity of the method. To quantify and limit the range of such artificial values, we developed an impact-detection algorithm that can be used to extract the perceived surface roughness from detailed terrain samples in relation to the size of the impacting rocks. The algorithm can also be combined with a rebound model to perform rockfall simulations directly on detailed 3D point clouds. The abilities of the algorithm are demonstrated by objectively extracting different perceived surface roughnesses from detailed terrain samples and by simulating rockfalls on detailed terrain models as proof of concept. The results produced are also compared to that of rockfall simulation software CRSP 4, RocFall 8 and Rockyfor3D 5.2.15 as validation. Although differences were observed, the validation shows that the algorithm can produce similar results. With the presented approach not being limited to coarse terrain models, the need for adding artificial terrain roughness or for adjusting sensitive damping parameters on a per-site basis is reduced, thereby limiting the related biases and subjectivity. There is an increasing need for quantitative rockfall hazard and risk assessment that requires a precise definition of the terms and concepts used for this particular type of landslide. This paper suggests using terms that appear to be the most logic and explicit as possible and describes methods to derive some of the main hazards and risk descriptors. The terms and concepts presented concern the rockfall process (failure, propagation, fragmentation, modelling) and the hazard and risk descriptors, distinguishing the cases of localized and diffuse hazards. For a localized hazard, the failure probability of the considered rock compartment in a given period of time has to be assessed, and the probability for a given element at risk to be impacted with a given energy must be derived combining the failure probability, the reach probability, and the exposure of the element. For a diffuse hazard that is characterized by a failure frequency, the number of rockfalls reaching the element at risk per unit of time and with a given energy (passage frequency) can be derived. This frequency is relevant for risk assessment when the element at risk can be damaged several times. Based on a previous risk calculation study conducted along a road corridor, risk is recalculated using a stochastic simulation by introducing variability into most of the parameters in the risk equation. This leads to an exceedance curve comparable to those of catastrophe models. This approach introduces uncertainty into the risk calculation in a simple way, and it can be used for poorly documented cases to compensate for a lack of data. The use of 3D point clouds to improve the understanding of natural phenomena is currently applied in natural hazard investigations, including the quantification of rockfall activity. However, 3D point cloud treatment is typically accomplished using nondedicated (and not optimal) software. To fill this gap, we present an open-source, specific rockfall package in an object-oriented toolbox developed in the MATLAB® environment. The proposed package offers a complete and semiautomatic 3D solution that spans from extraction to identification and volume estimations of rockfall sources using state-of-the-art methods and newly implemented algorithms. To illustrate the capabilities of this package, we acquired a series of high-quality point clouds in a pilot study area referred to as the La Cornalle cliff (West Switzerland), obtained robust volume estimations at different volumetric scales, and derived rockfall magnitude–frequency distributions, which assisted in the assessment of rockfall activity and long-term erosion rates. In this paper, a MATLAB tool for the automatic detection of the best locations to install a wireless sensor network (WSN) is presented. The implemented code works directly on high-resolution 3D point clouds and aims to help in positioning sensors that are part of a network requiring inter-visibility, namely, a clear line of sight (LOS). Indeed, with the development of LiDAR and Structure from Motion technologies, there is an opportunity to directly use 3D point cloud data to perform visibility analyses. By doing so, many disadvantages of traditional modelling and analysis methods can be bypassed. The algorithm points out the optimal deployment of devices following mainly two criteria: inter-visibility (using a modified version of the Hidden Point Removal operator) and inter-distance. Furthermore, an option to prioritize significant areas is provided. The proposed method was first validated on an artificial 3D model, and then on a landslide 3D point cloud acquired from terrestrial laser scanning for the real positioning of an ultrawide-band WSN already installed in 2016. The comparison between collected data and data acquired by the WSN installed following traditional patterns has demonstrated its ability for the optimal deployment of a WSN requiring inter-visibility. A study of the unconfined Continental Terminal aquifer in Abidjan District, located in a coastal sedimentary basin in Southern Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa), is conducted. This aquifer is the principal source of drinking water for the city of Abidjan. The water quality of the aquifer is affected by anthropogenic sources of pollution, such as scattered deposits of solid and liquid waste of all kinds. Additionally, the proliferation of gas stations, including potential tank leakage, must be considered in the event of an accident. To ensure the effective protection and management of the Abidjan groundwater, this work assesses the groundwater contamination risk of the Abidjan aquifer by hydrocarbons such as benzene. To achieve this objective, a numerical groundwater model that included the geological and hydrogeological data of the Abidjan aquifer was constructed with FEFLOW 7.1. A predictive simulation of groundwater flow coupled with the transport of dissolved benzene deposited on the soil surface at the N'Dotré and Anador gas stations was performed. The initial concentrations of dissolved benzene were 43.12 mg/L and 14.17 mg/L at the N'Dotré and Anador sites, respectively. The results revealed that a threshold concentration of 0.001 mg/L was reached after 44 years and two months at borehole ZE11, which is located four kilometers downgradient from the source. The maximum peak concentration of 0.011 mg/L was reached at this point after 47 years and two months. We discuss the different challenges, pros and cons of the fairly new Structure for Motion (SfM) embarked on a vehicle (SfM-EV) technique for slope surveys along transportation network tracks using action cameras embarked on standard moving vehicles. This low-cost technique generates georeferenced and coloured 3D point clouds without using any ground control points. Four action cameras, two of which had an integrated GNSS chip, were used to collect a series of pictures of tracksides at a rate of two images per second each. The SfM-EV results were compared with the results of seven other 3D survey techniques to evaluate the precision and accuracy of this technique, demonstrating the ability of this simple setting to generate 3D scenes. Different platforms for the cameras were tested, such as a bike, car, train, funicular, helicopter and so on. The SfM-EV technique was also tested on several study sites to highlight its strengths and weaknesses and obtain data, such as the density of points, equations of errors, overlap ratios and image resolution. The precision of the SfM-EV results was sufficient for detecting topographical changes close to the track for a volume of ~1 dm3 and the absolute positioning obtained with a low sky obstruction was approximately 5 m. The precision of SfM-EV was of a similar order to the other techniques, with an order of magnitude of a few centimetres. This approach possesses a low price-result quality ratio and is very simple to use.
