Defect-engineering accelerates the conduction of lithium ions in the cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries. However, the effects of defect-engineering on ion conduction and its mechanisms in humid environments remain unclear in the academic discourse. Here, we report on the effect of vacancy defects on the electronic properties of and Li-ion diffusion in a LiFePO4 material in humid environments. The research findings indicate that vacancy defects reduce the lattice constant and unit cell volume of LiFePO4. Additionally, the water molecules occupy the Li-ion vacancies, leading to an increase in the lattice constant of LiFePO4. The computational results of the electronic properties show that the introduction of water molecules induces a transition in LiFePO4 from a semiconductor to a metallic behavior, with a transfer of 0.38 e of charge from the water molecules to LiFePO4. Additionally, the migration barrier for Li ions in the H2O + LiFePO4 system is found to be 0.50 eV, representing an 11.1% increase compared to the pristine LiFePO4 migration barrier. Our findings suggest that water molecules impede the migration of Li ions and provide important insights into the effect of defect-engineering on electronic properties and ion conduction under humid conditions. Na1.36(Si0.86Ga0.14)2As2.98 and Li1.5Ga0.9Si3.1As4 were synthesized by heating mixtures of the elements at 950 °C. The crystal structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (Na1.36(Si0.86Ga0.14)2As2.98: I41/a, Z = 100, a = 19.8772(4) Å, c = 37.652(1) Å; Li1.5Ga0.9Si3.1As4: C2/c, Z = 8, a = 10.8838(6) Å, b = 10.8821(6) Å, c = 13.1591(7) Å). Na1.36(Si0.86Ga0.14)2As2.98 crystallizes similar to NaSi2P3 with interpenetrating networks of vertex-sharing T4 and T5 supertetrahedra. Gallium substitution at the silicon sites increases the charge of the cluster network, which is compensated for by a 36% higher sodium content. Since in contrast to NaSi2P3, all sodium sites are now fully occupied, there is no significant ion mobility, as indicated by 23Na-NMR. Consequently, the total sodium-ion conductivity of Na1.36(Si0.86Ga0.14)2As2.98 amounts to only 1.6(1) × 10−7 S cm−1 and is therefore three orders of magnitude lower than in NaSi2P3. Li1.5Ga0.9Si3.1As4 crystallizes in a new structure type with layers of edge-sharing (Si1−xGax)As4 tetrahedra alternating with layers that contain infinite Sin zigzag chains. Lithium ions reside in channels between the chains, and thus, the structure does not provide three dimensional pathways for ion conduction and the measured total Li-ion conductivity amounts to only 1.3(1) × 10−7 S cm−1. A solid-state polymer electrolyte membrane is formed by blending poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) with the synthesized copolymer of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-1-vinyl-3-butyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, in which lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide molecules are applied as the source of lithium ions. The accordingly formed membrane that contains 14 wt.% of P(MMA-co-VBIm-TFSI), 56 wt.% of PVDF-HFP, and 30 wt.% of LiTFSI manifests the best electrochemical properties, achieving an ionic conductivity of 1.11 × 10−4 S·cm−1 at 30 °C and 4.26 × 10−4 S·cm−1 at 80 °C, a Li-ion transference number of 0.36, and a wide electrochemical stability window of 4.7 V (vs. Li/Li+). The thus-assembled all-solid-state lithium-ion battery of LiFePO4/SPE/Li delivers a discharge specific capacity of 148 mAh·g−1 in the initial charge–discharge cycle at 0.1 C under 60 °C. The capacity retention of the cell is 95.2% after 50 cycles at 0.1 C and the Coulombic efficiency remains close to 100% during the cycling process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Real-time structural changes in Na-β″-alumina were observed in situ using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with electron beam irradiation. Na-β″-alumina has been widely investigated as a solid electrolyte material for sodium–sulfur secondary batteries owing to its high ionic conductivity. This high conductivity is known to be due to the Na+ ions on the loosely packed conduction planes of Na-β″-alumina. In the present study, we acquired real-time videos of the generation of spinel blocks caused by the conduction of Na+ ions. In addition, by observing Na extraction during electron beam irradiation, we experimentally confirmed that spinel block generation originates from the Na+ ion conduction, which has been a subject of recent debate. The charge carrier behavior and dielectric properties of BaF2:Tb3+ nanocrystals have been studied by alternating current (AC) impedance spectroscopy. The electron and ion coexist in the transport process. The F− ion's contribution to the total conduction increases with the doping concentration up to 4% and then decreases. Tb doping leads to the increase of defect quantities and a variation of charge carrier transport paths, which causes the increase of the ion diffusion coefficient and the decreases of bulk and grain boundary resistance. When the Tb-doped concentration is higher than 4%, the effect of deformation potential scattering variation on the transport property is dominant, which results in the decrease of the ion diffusion coefficient and increases of bulk and grain boundary resistance. The conduction properties of our BaF2:Tb3+ nanocrystals are compared with previous results that were found for the single crystals of rare earth-doped BaF2. Tb doping causes increases of both the quantity and the probability of carrier hopping, and it finally leads to increases of BaF2 nanocrystals' permittivity in the low frequency region. Electrical performance of self-directed channel (SDC) ion-conducting memristors which use Ag and Cu as the mobile ion source are compared over the temperature range of 6 K to 300 K. The Cu-based SDC memristors operate at temperatures as low as 6 K, whereas Ag-based SDC memristors are damaged if operated below 125 K. It is also observed that Cu reversibly diffuses into the active Ge2Se3 layer during normal device shelf-life, thus changing the state of a Cu-based memristor over time. This was not observed for the Ag-based SDC devices. The response of each device type to sinusoidal excitation is provided and shows that the Cu-based devices exhibit hysteresis lobe collapse at lower frequencies than the Ag-based devices. We have prepared a series of pyridinium-based gemini amphiphiles. They exhibit thermotropic liquid–crystalline behavior depending on their alkyl chain lengths and anion species. By adjusting the alkyl chain lengths and selecting suitable anions, we have obtained an ionic amphiphile that exhibits a normal-type bicontinuous cubic phase from 38 °C to 12 °C on cooling from an isotropic phase. In the bicontinuous cubic liquid–crystalline assembly, the pyridinium-based ionic parts align along a gyroid minimal surface forming a 3D continuous ionic domain while their ionophobic alkyl chains form 3D branched nanochannel networks. This ionic compound can form homogeneous mixtures with a lithium salt and the resultant mixtures keep the ability to form normal-type bicontinuous cubic phases. Ion conduction measurements have been performed for the mixtures on cooling. It has been revealed that the formation of the 3D branched ionophobic nanochannels does not disturb the ion conduction behavior in the ionic domain while it results in the conversion of the state of the mixtures from fluidic liquids to quasi-solids, namely highly viscous liquid crystals. Although the ionic conductivity of the mixtures is in the order of 10–7 S cm–1 at 40 °C, which is far lower than the values for practical use, the present material design has a potential to pave the way for developing advanced solid electrolytes consisting of two task-specific nanosegregated domains: One is an ionic liquid nano-domain with a 3D continuity for high ionic conductivity and the other is ionophobic nanochannel network domains for high mechanical strength.
