Formic acid has emerged as a highly promising hydrogen storage material, and the development of efficient catalysts to facilitate its dehydrogenation remains imperative. In this study, a novel catalyst consisting of palladium nanoparticles supported on boron-doped porous carbon (Pd/BPC) was successfully synthesized to enable efficient hydrogen production through the dehydrogenation of formic acid. The impacts of the boron doping ratio, doping temperature, and palladium reduction temperature on the catalyst's performance were systemically investigated. The results demonstrated the Pd/BPC catalyst synthesized with a carbon-to-boron ratio of 1:5 by calcination at 900 °C and subsequent reduction at 60 °C exhibited superior formic acid dehydrogenation performance, being 2.9 and 3.8 times greater than that of the Pd/PC catalysts without boron doping and commercial Pd/C, respectively. Additionally, the catalyst showed excellent cycle stability with no significant activity reduction after five consecutive cycles. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that boron doping not only facilitates the homogenous distribution of Pd nanoparticles but also induces a stronger support–metal interaction, thereby reinforcing the catalytic performance. Three types of CuO with different micro–structures were applied to catalyze the conversion of glycerol to lactic acid. The structure–activity relationship between CuO and its catalytic performance was investigated by combining experiments and theoretical calculations. We demonstrated that two CuO samples (CuO–BCC and CuO–CA), as prepared by calcining copper salts, show larger lattice spacing than that of commercial CuO (CuO–COM). In the catalytic experiments, CuO–BCC, which had the largest lattice spacing (d = 0.2480 nm), exhibited the highest yield of 78.54% for lactic acid. The lattice strain caused by lattice expansion was considered more favorable for CuO–BCC in adsorbing glycerol molecules, thereby improving the conversion of glycerol to lactic acid. The DFT simulation calculation results further prove that CuO–BCC has a larger adsorption energy for glycerol and a smaller thermodynamic energy barrier for the dehydrogenation of glycerol to form the key intermediate products (glyceraldehyde and 1,3-dihydroxyacetone) than CuO–COM. Failure of collapsing walls is an important process affecting the development of Benggang and is closely related to the soil shear strength. Plant roots can increase the soil shear strength. However, the effects and mechanisms of root reinforcement on the soil shear strength of collapsing walls remain unclear. To explore the shear strength characteristics of collapsing walls and their influencing factors under different vegetation conditions, Pennisetum sinese, Dicranopteris dichotoma, Odontosoria chinensis, and Neyraudia reynaudiana were adopted as experimental objects in the Benggang district of Anxi County, Southeast China. We measured the root characteristics and in situ shear strength of root–soil complexes by dividing soil with the four vegetation conditions into five soil layers: 0–5 cm, 5–10 cm, 10–15 cm, 15–20 cm, and 20–25 cm. The average shear strength of the root–soil complexes of the various plants ranked as follows: Pennisetum sinese (30.95 kPa) > Odontosoria chinensis (28.08 kPa) > Dicranopteris dichotoma (21.24 kPa) > Neyraudia reynaudiana (14.99 kPa) > bare soil (11.93 kPa). The enhancement effect of the root system on the soil shear strength was mainly manifested in the 0–5 cm soil surface layer. The soil shear strength attained an extremely significant positive correlation with the root length density, root surface area density, root volume density, root biomass density, for root diameters (L) less than or equal to 0.5 mm and between 0.5 and 1 mm, the soil shear strength could be simulated by using root volume density. The shear strength of undisturbed root–soil complexes measured with a 14.10 pocket vane tester was higher than the value obtained with the Wu–Waldron model (WWM). The correction coefficient k′ varied between 0.20 and 20.25, mostly exceeding 1, and the average correction coefficient k′ value was 4.94. Micro-structured copper layers are obtained from pulse-reverse electrodeposition on a planar gold electrode that is magnetically patterned by magnetized iron wires underneath. 3D numerical simulations of the electrodeposition based on an adapted reaction kinetics are able to nicely reproduce the micro-structure of the deposit layer, despite the height values still remain underestimated. It is shown that the structuring is enabled by the magnetic gradient force, which generates a local flow that supports deposition and hinders dissolution in the regions of high magnetic gradients. The Lorentz force originating from radial magnetic field components near the rim of the electrode causes a circumferential cell flow. The resulting secondary flow, however, is superseded by the local flow driven by the magnetic gradient force in the vicinity of the wires. Finally, the role of solutal buoyancy effects is discussed to better understand the limitations of structured growth in different modes of deposition and cell geometries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A long start-up period is one of the main factors limiting the practical application of aerobic granular sludge (AGS). Bioaugmentation could be a good strategy to accelerate aerobic granulation. In this research, four denitrifying strains were isolated from mature AGS. Mycobacterium senegalense X3-1 exhibited the strongest self-aggregation ability and good denitrification ability. Ensifer adhaerens X1 showed the strongest denitrification ability but poor self-aggregation ability. Additionally, strain X3-1 demonstrated the highest extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) contents accompanied by relatively high N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) concentrations, which could illustrate its predominant aggregation ability—AHLs produced by bacteria regulate EPS secretion to accelerate cell aggregation. Strain X3-1 and X1 were chosen as inoculated bacterium to verify the effects of bioaugmentation on AGS granulation and denitrification. Granulation was achieved in the sequential batch reactors (SBRs) added strain X3-1 10 days earlier than the control group. The particle morphology and TIN removal rate of X3-1 were both superior to the latter. The introduction of strains reduced the richness and diversity of the microbial community, but the key functional bacteria, Candidatus_Competibacter, proliferates in the SBR inoculated with X3-1. Conclusively, it is suggested Mycobacterium senegalense X3-1 could be a prospective strain for enhancing AGS formation and denitrification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Speed judgment is a vital component of autonomous driving perception systems. Automobile drivers were able to evaluate their speed as a result of their driving experience. However, driverless automobiles cannot autonomously evaluate their speed suitability through external environmental factors such as the surrounding conditions and traffic flows. This study introduced the parameter of overtaking frequency (OTF) based on the state of the traffic flow on both sides of the lane to reflect the difference between the speed of a driverless automobile and its surrounding traffic to solve the above problem. In addition, a speed evaluation algorithm was proposed based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) model. To train the LSTM model, we extracted OTF as the first observation variable, and the characteristic parameters of the vehicle's longitudinal motion and the comparison parameters with the leading vehicle were used as the second observation variables. The algorithm judged the velocity using a hierarchical method. We conducted a road test by using real vehicles and the algorithms verified the data, which showed the accuracy rate of the model is 93%. Composting is recognized as an effective strategy for the sustainable use of organic wastes, but also as an important emission source of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) contributing to global warming. The effects of calcium superphosphate (CaSSP) on N 2 O production during composting are reported to be controversial, and the intrinsic microbial mechanism remains unclear. Here, a pig manure windrow composting experiment lasting for ~60 days was performed to evaluate the effects of CaSSP amendment (5%, w / w ) on N 2 O fluxes in situ, and to determine the denitrifiers' response, and their driving factors. Results indicated that CaSSP amendment significantly reduced N 2 O emissions as compared to the control pile (maximum N 2 O emission rate reduced by 64.5% and total emission decreased by 49.8%). CaSSP amendment reduced the abundance of nirK gene encoding for nitrite reductase, while the abundance of nosZ gene (N 2 O reductase) was enriched. Finally, we built a schematic model and indicated that the abundance of nirK gene was likely to play a key role in mediating N 2 O production, which were correlated with NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N changing responsive to CaSSP. Our finding implicates that CaSSP application could be a potential strategy for N 2 O mitigation in manure windrow composting, and the revealed microbial mechanism is helpful for deepening the understanding of the interaction among N-cycle functional genes, physicochemical factors, and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions.
