The rapid and accurate extraction of water information from satellite imagery has been a crucial topic in remote sensing applications and has important value in water resources management, water environment monitoring, and disaster emergency management. Although the OLI-2 sensor onboard Landsat-9 is similar to the well-known OLI onboard Landsat-8, there were significant differences in the average absolute percentage change in the bands for water detection. Additionally, the performance of Landsat-9 in water body extraction is yet to be fully understood. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct comparative studies to evaluate the water extraction performance of Landsat-9 with Landsat-8. In this study, we analyze the performance of simultaneous Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 data for water body extraction based on eight common water indices (Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI), Augmented Normalized Difference Water Index (ANDWI), Water Index 2015 (WI2015), tasseled cap wetness index (TCW), Automated Water Extraction Index for scenes with shadows (AWEIsh) and without shadows (AWEInsh) and Multi-Band Water Index (MBWI)) to extract water bodies in seven study sites worldwide. The Otsu algorithm is utilized to automatically determine the optimal segmentation threshold for water body extraction. The results showed that (1) Landsat-9 satellite data can be used for water body extraction effectively, with results consistent with those from Landsat-8. The eight selected water indices in this study are applicable to both Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 satellites. (2) The NDWI index shows a larger variability in accuracy compared to other indices when used on Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 imagery. Therefore, additional caution should be exercised when using the NDWI for water body analysis with both Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 satellites simultaneously. (3) For Landsat-8 and Landsat-9 imagery, ratio-based water indices tend to have more omission errors, while difference-based indices are more prone to commission errors. Overall, ratio-based indices exhibit greater variability in overall accuracy, whereas difference-based indices demonstrate lower sensitivity to variations in the study area, showing smaller overall accuracy fluctuations and higher robustness. This study can provide necessary references for the selection of water indices based on the newest Landsat-9 data. Ubiquitin-specific peptidase 22 (Usp22) cleaves ubiquitin moieties from numerous proteins, including histone H2B and transcription factors. Recently, it was reported that Usp22 acts as a negative regulator of interferon-dependent responses. In the current study, we investigated the role of Usp22 deficiency in acute viral infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV). We found that the lack of Usp22 on bone marrow-derived cells (Usp22fl/fl Vav1-Cre mice) reduced the induction of type I and II interferons. A limited type I interferon response did not influence virus replication. However, restricted expression of PD-L1 led to increased frequencies of functional virus-specific CD8+ T cells and rapid death of Usp22-deficient mice. CD8+ T cell depletion experiments revealed that accelerated CD8+ T cells were responsible for enhanced lethality in Usp22 deficient mice. Simple Summary: Spodoptera litura is an important agricultural pest widely distributed around the world, which can damage numerous crops. Despite its economic importance, research on the population genetics of S. litura has been limited, preventing insight into the spread of the pest. In this study, we conducted a population genetic analysis of 24 populations of S. litura in Southern China using microsatellite markers, demonstrating the information on the genetic diversity and genetic structure of the tested populations. The results will provide pest control management strategies for S. litura in Southern China. Population genetic structure is strongly affected by dispersal events, especially for migratory species. The investigation of population structure is therefore conducive to increasing our understanding of species dispersal. Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an important tobacco pest in China causing serious damage to multiple crops. In this study, we explore its dispersal dynamics by clarifying the fine-scale population genetics using 545 S. litura samples collected from tobacco plantations at 24 locations (mainly in Baise, Hechi, and Hezhou, Southern China). We analyzed the genetic diversity, genetic structure, and gene flow of these populations using seven microsatellite loci. Our results revealed high genetic diversity and low population genetic structure among S. litura. The genetic distance was uncorrelated with geographical distance, indicating the complete randomness of dispersal among the local populations. Our results suggest that the movement scope of contemporary S. litura might be much higher than the local-level spatial scale, which will provide a theoretical basis for pest management. The size of phytoplankton not only influences its physiology, metabolic rates and marine food web, but also serves as an indicator of phytoplankton functional roles in ecological and biogeochemical processes. Therefore, some algorithms have been developed to infer the synoptic distribution of phytoplankton cell size, denoted as phytoplankton size classes (PSCs), in surface ocean waters, by the means of remotely sensed variables. This study, using the NASA bio-Optical Marine Algorithm Data set (NOMAD) high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) database, and satellite match-ups, aimed to compare the effectiveness of modeling techniques, including partial least square (PLS), artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machine (SVM) and random forests (RF), and feature selection techniques, including genetic algorithm (GA), successive projection algorithm (SPA) and recursive feature elimination based on support vector machine (SVM-RFE), for inferring PSCs from remote sensing data. Results showed that: (1) SVM-RFE worked better in selecting sensitive features; (2) RF performed better than PLS, ANN and SVM in calibrating PSCs retrieval models; (3) machine learning techniques produced better performance than the chlorophyll-a based three-component method; (4) sea surface temperature, wind stress, and spectral curvature derived from the remote sensing reflectance at 490, 510, and 555 nm were among the most sensitive features to PSCs; and (5) the combination of SVM-RFE feature selection techniques and random forests regression was recommended for inferring PSCs. Portraying urban functional zones provides useful insights into understanding complex urban systems and establishing rational urban planning. Although several studies have confirmed the efficacy of remote sensing imagery in urban studies, coupling remote sensing and new human sensing data like mobile phone positioning data to identify urban functional zones has still not been investigated. In this study, a new framework integrating remote sensing imagery and mobile phone positioning data was developed to analyze urban functional zones with landscape and human activity metrics. Landscapes metrics were calculated based on land cover from remote sensing images. Human activities were extracted from massive mobile phone positioning data. By integrating them, urban functional zones (urban center, sub-center, suburbs, urban buffer, transit region and ecological area) were identified by a hierarchical clustering. Finally, gradient analysis in three typical transects was conducted to investigate the pattern of landscapes and human activities. Taking Shenzhen, China, as an example, the conducted experiment shows that the pattern of landscapes and human activities in the urban functional zones in Shenzhen does not totally conform to the classical urban theories. It demonstrates that the fusion of remote sensing imagery and human sensing data can characterize the complex urban spatial structure in Shenzhen well. Urban functional zones have the potential to act as bridges between the urban structure, human activity and urban planning policy, providing scientific support for rational urban planning and sustainable urban development policymaking. Since hyperspectral satellite images (HSIs) usually hold low spatial resolution, improving the spatial resolution of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is an effective solution to explore its potential for remote sensing applications, such as land cover mapping over urban and coastal areas. The fusion of HSIs with high spatial resolution multispectral images (MSIs) and panchromatic (PAN) images could be a solution. To address the challenging work of fusing HSIs, MSIs and PAN images, a novel easy-to-implement stepwise fusion approach was proposed in this study. The fusion of HSIs and MSIs was decomposed into a set of simple image fusion tasks through spectral grouping strategy. HSI, MSI and PAN images were fused step by step using existing image fusion algorithms. According to different fusion order, two strategies ((HSI+MSI)+PAN and HSI+(MSI+PAN)) were proposed. Using simulated and real Gaofen-5 (GF-5) HSI, MSI and PAN images from the Gaofen-1 (GF-1) PMS sensor as experimental data, we compared the proposed stepwise fusion strategies with the traditional fusion strategy (HSI+PAN), and compared the performances of six fusion algorithms under three fusion strategies. We comprehensively evaluated the fused results through three aspects: spectral fidelity, spatial fidelity and computation efficiency evaluation. The results showed that (1) the spectral fidelity of the fused images obtained by stepwise fusion strategies was better than that of the traditional strategy; (2) the proposed stepwise strategies performed better or comparable spatial fidelity than traditional strategy; (3) the stepwise strategy did not significantly increase the time complexity compared to the traditional strategy; and (4) we also provide suggestions for selecting image fusion algorithms using the proposed strategy. The study provided us with a reference for the selection of fusion strategies and algorithms in different application scenarios, and also provided an easy-to-implement solution and useful references for fusing HSI, MSI and PAN images. Aquaculture has grown rapidly in the field of food industry in recent years; however, it brought many environmental problems, such as water pollution and reclamations of lakes and coastal wetland areas. Thus, the evaluation and management of aquaculture industry are needed, in which accurate aquaculture mapping is an essential prerequisite. Due to the difference between inland and marine aquaculture areas and the difficulty in processing large amounts of remote sensing images, the accurate mapping of different aquaculture types is still challenging. In this study, a novel approach based on multi-source spectral and texture features was proposed to map simultaneously inland and marine aquaculture areas. Time series optical Sentinel-2 images were first employed to derive spectral indices for obtaining texture features. The backscattering and texture features derived from the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of Sentinel-1A were then used to distinguish aquaculture areas from other geographical entities. Finally, a supervised Random Forest classifier was applied for large scale aquaculture area mapping. To address the low efficiency in processing large amounts of remote sensing images, the proposed approach was implemented on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. A case study in the Pearl River Basin (Guangdong Province) of China showed that the proposed approach obtained aquaculture map with an overall accuracy of 89.5%, and the implementation of proposed approach on GEE platform greatly improved the efficiency for large scale aquaculture area mapping. The derived aquaculture map may support decision-making services for the sustainable development of aquaculture areas and ecological protection in the study area, and the proposed approach holds great potential for mapping aquacultures on both national and global scales. Thin clouds seriously affect the availability of optical remote sensing images, especially in visible bands. Short-wave infrared (SWIR) bands are less influenced by thin clouds, but usually have lower spatial resolution than visible (Vis) bands in high spatial resolution remote sensing images (e.g., in Sentinel-2A/B, CBERS04, ZY-1 02D and HJ-1B satellites). Most cloud removal methods do not take advantage of the spectral information available in SWIR bands, which are less affected by clouds, to restore the background information tainted by thin clouds in Vis bands. In this paper, we propose CR-MSS, a novel deep learning-based thin cloud removal method that takes the SWIR and vegetation red edge (VRE) bands as inputs in addition to visible/near infrared (Vis/NIR) bands, in order to improve cloud removal in Sentinel-2 visible bands. Contrary to some traditional and deep learning-based cloud removal methods, which use manually designed rescaling algorithm to handle bands at different resolutions, CR-MSS uses convolutional layers to automatically process bands at different resolution. CR-MSS has two input/output branches that are designed to process Vis/NIR and VRE/SWIR, respectively. Firstly, Vis/NIR cloudy bands are down-sampled by a convolutional layer to low spatial resolution features, which are then concatenated with the corresponding features extracted from VRE/SWIR bands. Secondly, the concatenated features are put into a fusion tunnel to down-sample and fuse the spectral information from Vis/NIR and VRE/SWIR bands. Third, a decomposition tunnel is designed to up-sample and decompose the fused features. Finally, a transpose convolutional layer is used to up-sample the feature maps to the resolution of input Vis/NIR bands. CR-MSS was trained on 28 real Sentinel-2A image pairs over the globe, and tested separately on eight real cloud image pairs and eight simulated cloud image pairs. The average SSIM values (Structural Similarity Index Measurement) for CR-MSS results on Vis/NIR bands over all testing images were 0.69, 0.71, 0.77, and 0.81, respectively, which was on average 1.74% higher than the best baseline method. The visual results on real Sentinel-2 images demonstrate that CR-MSS can produce more realistic cloud and cloud shadow removal results than baseline methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ability to precisely map urban land use types can significantly aid urban planning and urban system understanding. In recent years, remote sensing images and social sensing data have been frequently used for urban land use mapping. However, there still remains a problem: what is the best basic unit for fusing remote sensing images with social sensing data? The aim of this study is to explore the impact of spatial units on urban land use mapping, with remote sensing images and social sensing data of Shenzhen City, China. Three different basic units were first applied to delineate urban land use types, and for each unit, a word dictionary was built by fusing natural–physical features from high spatial resolution (HSR) remote sensing images and the socioeconomic semantic features from point of interest (POI) data. The latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) algorithm and random forest methods were then applied to map the land use of the Futian district—the core region of Shenzhen. The experiment demonstrates that: (1) No matter what kind of spatial unit, it is beneficial to fuse multisource data to improve the performance. However, when using different spatial units, the importances of features are different. (2) Using block-based spatial units results in the final map looking the best. However, a great challenge of this approach is that the scale is too coarse to handle mixed functional areas. (3) Using grid- and object-based units, the problem of mixed functional areas can be better solved. Additionally, the object-based land use map looks better from our visual interpretation. As an inevitable phenomenon in most optical remote-sensing images, the effect of shadows is prominent in urban scenes. Shadow detection is critical for exploiting shadows and recovering the distorted information. Unfortunately, in general, automatic shadow detection methods for urban aerial images cannot achieve satisfactory performance due to the limitation of feature patterns and the lack of consideration of non-local contextual information. To address this challenging problem, the global-spatial-context-attention (GSCA) module was developed to self-adaptively aggregate all global contextual information over the spatial dimension for each pixel in this paper. The GSCA module was embedded into a modified U-shaped encoder–decoder network that was derived from the UNet network to output the final shadow predictions. The network was trained on a newly created shadow detection dataset, and the binary cross-entropy (BCE) loss function was modified to enhance the training procedure. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated on several typical urban aerial images. Experiment results suggested that the proposed method achieved a better trade-off between automaticity and accuracy. The F1-score, overall accuracy, balanced-error-rate, and intersection-over-union metrics of the proposed method were higher than those of other state-of-the-art shadow detection methods. Moderate spatial resolution (MSR) satellite images, which hold a trade-off among radiometric, spectral, spatial and temporal characteristics, are extremely popular data for acquiring land cover information. However, the low accuracy of existing classification methods for MSR images is still a fundamental issue restricting their capability in urban land cover mapping. In this study, we proposed a hybrid convolutional neural network (H-ConvNet) for improving urban land cover mapping with MSR Sentinel-2 images. The H-ConvNet was structured with two streams: one lightweight 1D ConvNet for deep spectral feature extraction and one lightweight 2D ConvNet for deep context feature extraction. To obtain a well-trained 2D ConvNet, a training sample expansion strategy was introduced to assist context feature learning. The H-ConvNet was tested in six highly heterogeneous urban regions around the world, and it was compared with support vector machine (SVM), object-based image analysis (OBIA), Markov random field model (MRF) and a newly proposed patch-based ConvNet system. The results showed that the H-ConvNet performed best. We hope that the proposed H-ConvNet would benefit for the land cover mapping with MSR images in highly heterogeneous urban regions. Accurate and up-to-date tidal flat mapping is of much importance to learning how coastal ecosystems work in a time of anthropogenic disturbances and rising sea levels, which will provide scientific instruction for sustainable management and ecological assessments. For large-scale and high spatial-resolution mapping of tidal flats, it is difficult to obtain accurate tidal flat maps without multi-temporal observation data. In this study, we aim to investigate the potential and advantages of the freely accessible Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) imagery archive and Google Earth Engine (GEE) for accurate tidal flats mapping. A novel approach was proposed, including multi-temporal feature extraction, machine learning classification using GEE and morphological post-processing. The 50 km buffer of the coastline from Hangzhou Bay to Yalu River in China's eastern coastal zone was taken as the study area. From the perspective of natural attributes and unexploited status of tidal flats, we delineated a broader extent comprising intertidal flats, supratidal barren flats and vegetated flats, since intertidal flats are major component of the tidal flats. The overall accuracy of the resultant map was about 94.4% from a confusion matrix for accuracy assessment. The results showed that the use of time-series images can greatly eliminate the effects of tidal level, and improve the mapping accuracy. This study also proved the potential and advantage of combining the GEE platform with time-series Landsat images, due to its powerful cloud computing platform, especially for large scale and longtime tidal flats mapping. Over the past few decades, the coastal city of Shenzhen has been transformed from a small fishing village to a mega city as China's first Special Economic Zone. The rapid economic development was matched by a sharp increase in the demand for usable land and coastal reclamation has been undertaken to create new land from the sea. However, it has been reported that subsidence occurred in land reclamation area and around subway tunnel area. Subsidence and the additional threat of coastal inundation from sea-level rise highlight the necessity of displacement monitoring in Shenzhen. The time Series InSAR technique is capable of detecting sub-centimeter displacement of the Earth's surface over large areas. This study uses Envisat, COSMO-SkyMed, and Sentinel-1 datasets to determine the surface movements in Shenzhen from 2004 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2017. Subsidence observed can be attributable to both land reclamation and subway construction. Seasonal displacements are likely to be associated with precipitation. The influence of ocean tidal level changes on seasonal displacement is not strongly evident from the results and requires further investigations.
