In this paper, a comprehensive study of the mechanical properties of selective laser sintered polyamide components is presented, for various different process parameters as well as environmental testing conditions. For the optimization of the static and dynamic mechanical load behavior, different process parameters, e.g., laser power, scan speed, and build temperature, were varied, defining an optimal parameter combination. First, the influence of the different process parameters was tested, leading to a constant energy density for different combinations. Due to similarities in mechanical load behavior, the energy density was identified as a decisive factor, mostly independent of the input parameters. Thus, secondly, the energy density was varied by the different parameters, exhibiting large differences for all levels of fatigue behavior. An optimal parameter combination of 18 W for the laser power and a scan speed of 2666 mm/s was determined, as a higher energy density led to the best results in static and dynamic testing. According to this, the variation in build temperature was investigated, leading to improvements in tensile strength and fatigue strength at higher build temperatures. Furthermore, different ambient temperatures during testing were evaluated, as the temperature-dependent behavior of polymers is of high importance for industrial applications. An increased ambient temperature as well as active cooling during testing was examined, having a significant impact on the high cycle fatigue regime and on the endurance limit.

This contribution quantifies the birefringence within injection-molded cyclic olefin copolymer plates and discusses its impact on the mechanical properties of the plates. It also focuses on the impact of birefringence on integrated waveguides and Bragg gratings and provides fabrication guidelines for such structures. The anisotropy in all three dimensions of the workpiece is examined by means of polarimetry and a prism coupler. It is found that the birefringence is inhomogenously distributed within the workpieces, whereas the maximum birefringence not only varies locally, but also depends on the observation direction. Overall, a maximum birefringence of 10 × 10 -4 is found at the plate's surface near the injection gate. The anisotropy then reduces exponentially towards the center of the workpiece and saturates at 1.8 × 10 -4 , in a depth of 0.4 mm. Thus, the birefringence strongly affects near-surface photonic structures. It is found that, depending on their orientation and the local birefringence of the substrate, waveguides and Bragg gratings fabricated with comparable parameters behave completely differently in terms of polarization-dependent optical attenuation, cross-sectional intensity distribution and Bragg reflection signal. For example, the support of the TM mode can vary between total loss and an optical attenuation of 0.9 dB × cm -1 . In consequence, this study underlines the importance of quantifying the birefringent state of an injection-molded cyclic olefin copolymer workpiece if it is supposed to serve as a substrate for integrated photonic structures. The study furthermore demonstrates that birefringence effects can be omitted by burying the photonic structures deeper into the volume of the thermoplastic.

This article discusses the process of the laser turning of rotational symmetric, cylindrical components using ultrashort laser pulses with respect to the geometrical conditions and the resulting energy distribution during the laser turning process. As a result, process predictions and potential process optimizations are feasible. Particular attention is drawn to the laser spot formation on the cylindrical surface of the work piece in conjunction with the positioning of the laser beam relative to the rotation axis of the specimen. Based on fundamental calculations and experimental results, an optimum processing strategy is discussed, whereat the use of a trepanning optic in the laser turning process and the forming of a particular surface structure is additionally being issued.

We report on laser drilling borehole arrays using ultrashort pulsed lasers with a particular focus on reducing the inadvertent heat accumulation across the workpiece by optimizing the drilling sequence. For the optimization, evolutionary algorithms are used and their results are verified by thermal simulation using Comsol and experimentally evaluated using a thermal imaging camera. To enhance process efficiency in terms of boreholes drilled per second, multi-spot approaches are employed using a spatial light modulator. However, as higher temperatures occur across the workpiece when using simultaneous multi-spot drilling as compared to a single-spot process, a subtle spatial distribution and sequence of the multi-spot approach has to be selected in order to limit the resulting local heat input over the processing time. Different optimization approaches based on evolutionary algorithms aid to select those drilling sequences which allow for the combination of a high efficiency of multi-spot profiles, a low-generated process temperature and a high-component quality. In particular, using a 4 × 4 laser spot array allows for the drilling of 40,000 boreholes in less than 76 s (526 boreholes/s) with a reduced temperature increase by about 35%, as compared to a single spot process when employing an optimized drilling sequence.

We report on a comprehensive study of the mechanical properties of maraging steel body-centred cubic lattice structures fabricated by a hybrid additive manufacturing technology that combines laser powder bed fusion with in situ high-speed milling. As the mechanical properties of additive manufactured components are inferior to, e.g., cast components, surface modifications can improve the mechanical behaviour. Different hybrid additive manufacturing technologies have been designed using additive and subtractive processes, improving process quality. Following this, mechanical testing is performed with respect to static tensile properties and dynamic stress, hardness, and porosity, comparing specimens manufactured by laser powder bed fusion only to those manufactured by the hybrid approach. In addition, the influence of different heat-treatment techniques on the mechanical behaviour of the lattice structures is investigated, namely solution and aging treatment as well as hot isostatic pressing. Thus, the influence of the superior surface quality due to the hybrid approach is evaluated, leading to, e.g., an offset of about 14-16% for the static testing of HIP lattice structures. Furthermore, the dynamic load behaviour can be improved with a finished surface, heading to a shift of the different zones of fatigue behaviour in the testing of hybrid-built specimens.

We report on additively manufactured filter systems based on bionic manta ray structures and evaluate their filter performance. The filters are periodic lamella structures produced by selective laser sintering using PA12 polyamide powder. Two different lamella types are investigated, which are derived from two manta ray genera, namely, Mobula tarapacana and Manta birostris . The precipitator efficiency of sand particles in water is determined for both flow directions, which are referred to as the "wing" and "spoiler" arrangements. With a flat filter design, more than 90% of sand particles can be removed from the water. The variation of the lamella distance reveals that the filter effect is based on the different dynamic flow of particles and water rather than filtering by the hole size. The successful transformation of the primary flat filter design into a round filter structure is demonstrated with precipitator efficiencies above 95% and a ratio of filtered to unfiltered water of 1:1 being achieved, depending of the gap between the filter and the surrounding pipe. A shortening of the filter structure results in an unaltered precipitator efficiency but a lower ratio of filtered water. These results reveal the peculiar possibility to produce 3D round-shaped filters based on manta ray structures with additive manufacturing, achieving good precipitator efficiencies.

We present a compressed air motor, completely built by laser powder bed fusion. To highlight the fully functional integration by additive manufacturing, the rotor, stator, bearings, turbine, gas inlet and outlet were all built in a single print job. The material used was Inconel 718, and the motor was 44 mm tall and 12 mm in diameter. With the rotation axis of the motor in print in the direction of the laser powder bed fusion process, no build supports are needed, and thus the rotor and stator are fully moveable against each other. Plain bearings were used to position the rotor inseparably inside the stator, with a bearing gap of 0.2 mm, resulting in stable rotation. The idle rotation speed of the motor was measured with a digital laser measuring device as a function of air pressure and inlet size. With linear behavior between the rotation speed and gas pressure of up to 5.5 bar, the motor can be easily controlled. With varying gas inlet sizes, the idle rotation speed of the compressed air motor is also varied. A maximum rotation speed of 90,000 rpm was achieved at 1.5 mm gas inlet size and 3 bar gas pressure.

Sapphire is a robust and wear-resistant material. However, efficient and high-quality micromachining is still a challenge. This contribution demonstrates and discusses two novels, previously unreported approaches for femtosecond laser-based micromachining of rotational-symmetric sapphire workpieces, whereas both methods are in principal hybrids of laser scanning and laser turning or laser lathe. The first process, a combination of a sequential linear hatch pattern in parallel to the workpiece's main axis with a defined incremental workpiece rotation, enables the fabrication of sapphire fibers with diameters of 50 μm over a length of 4.5 mm. Furthermore, sapphire specimens with a diameter of 25 μm over a length of 2 mm can be fabricated whereas an arithmetical mean height, i.e., S a parameter, of 281 nm is achieved. The second process combines a constant workpiece feed and orthogonal scanning with incremental workpiece rotation. With this approach, workpiece length limitations of the first process are overcome and sapphire fibers with an average diameter of 90 µm over a length of 20 cm are manufactured. Again, the sapphire specimen exhibits a comparable surface roughness with an average S a value of 249 nm over 20 cm. Based on the obtained results, the proposed manufacturing method paves an innovative and flexible, all laser-based way towards the fabrication or microstructuring of sapphire optical devices, and thus, a promising alternative to chemical processes.

We report on a comprehensive study of laser ablation and micromachining of alumina using a high-power 1030 nm ultrashort-pulsed laser. By varying laser power up to 150 W, pulse duration between 900 fs and 10 ps, repetition rates between 200 kHz and 800 kHz), spatial pulse overlap between 70% and 80% and a layer-wise rotation of the scan direction, the ablation efficiency, ablation rate and surface roughness are determined and discussed with respect to an efficient and optimized process strategy. As a result, the combination of a high pulse repetition rate of 800 kHz and the longest evaluated pulse duration of 10 ps leads to the highest ablation efficiency of 0.76 mm3/(W*min). However, the highest ablation rate of up to 57 mm3/min is achieved at a smaller repetition rate of 200 kHz and the shortest evaluated pulse duration of 900 fs. The surface roughness is predominantly affected by the applied laser fluence. The application of a high repetition rate leads to a small surface roughness Ra below 2 μm even for the usage of 150 W laser power. By an interlayer rotation of the scan path, optimization of the ablation characteristics can be achieved, while an interlayer rotation of 90° leads to increasing the ablation rate, the application of a rotation angle of 11° minimizes the surface roughness. The evaluation by scanning electron microscopy shows the formation of thin melt films on the surface but also reveals a minimized heat affected zone for the in-depth modification. Overall, the results of this study pave the way for high-power ultrashort-pulsed lasers to efficient, high-quality micromachining of ceramics.

We report on the laser ablation of cyclic olefin copolymer using an amplified ultrashort pulsed laser in the ultraviolet spectral range. In addition to a high ablation depth per laser-structured layer up to 74 μm at a fluence of 22 J cm-2, an excellent mean roughness Ra of laser-patterned surfaces down to 0.5 μm is demonstrated. Furthermore, with increasing fluence, increasing ablation efficiencies up to 2.5 mm 3 W -1 min -1 are determined. Regarding the quality of the ablation, we observed steep ablation flanks and low debris formation, though for fluences above 10.5 J cm-2 the formation of troughs was observed, being attributed to multiple reflections on the ablation flanks. For comparison, laser ablation was performed under identical conditions with an infrared laser wavelength. The results highlight that UV ablation exhibits significant advantages in terms of ablation efficiency, surface roughness and quality. Moreover, our results show that a larger UV focus spot accelerates the ablation process with comparable quality, paving the way for high-power UV ultrashort pulsed lasers towards an efficient and qualitative tool for the laser machining of cyclic olefin copolymer. The production of complex microfluidics further underlines the suitability of this type of laser.

We report on an optimization study of percussion drilling thin metal sheets employing a high repetition rate, high power femtosecond laser with respect to the resulting heat accumulation. A specified simplex algorithm was employed to optimize the spatial drilling sequence, whereas a simplified thermal simulation using COMSOL was validated by comparing its results to the temperature measurements using an infrared camera. Optimization for drilling borehole matrices was aspired with respect to the generated temperature across the processed specimen, while the drilling strategy was altered in its spatial drilling sequence and by using multi-spot approaches generated by a spatial light modulator. As a result, we found that an optimization strategy based on limited consecutive holes in a Moore neighborhood led to reduced temperatures and the shortest process times.

We report on a comprehensive study of laser percussion microvia drilling of FR-4 printed circuit board material using ultrashort pulse lasers with emission in the green spectral region. Laser pulse durations in the pico- and femtosecond regime, laser pulse repetition rates up to 400 kHz and laser fluences up to 11.5 J/cm2 are applied to optimize the quality of microvias, as being evaluated by the generated taper, the extension of glass fiber protrusions and damage of inner lying copper layers using materialography. The results are discussed in terms of the ablation threshold for FR-4 and copper, heat accumulation and pulse shielding effects as a result of pulse to pulse interactions. As a specific result, using a laser pulse duration of 2 ps appears beneficial, resulting in small glass fiber protrusions and high precision in the stopping process at inner copper layer. If laser pulse repetition rates larger than 100 kHz are applied, we find that the processing quality can be increased by heat accumulation effects.

We present an in situ process monitoring approach for remote fiber laser cutting, which is based on evaluating images from a high-speed camera. A specifically designed image processing algorithm allows the distinction between complete and incomplete cuts by analyzing spectral and geometric information of the melt pool from the captured images of the high-speed camera. The camera-based monitoring system itself is fit to a conventional laser deflection unit for use with high-power fiber lasers, with the optical detection path being coaxially aligned to the incident laser. Without external illumination, the radiation of the melt from the process zone is recorded in the visible spectral range from the top view and spatially and temporally resolved. The melt pool size and emitted sparks are evaluated in dependence of machining parameters such as feed rate, cycles, and focus position during cutting electrical sheets.

We report on milling and tool wear characteristics of hybrid additive manufacturing comprising laser powder bed fusion and in situ high-speed milling, a particular process in which the cutter mills inside the powder bed without any cooling lubricant being applicable. Flank wear is found to be the dominant wear characteristic with its temporal evolution over utilization period revealing the typical s-shaped dependence. The flank wear land width is measured by microscopy and correlated to the achievable surface roughness of milled 3D-printed parts, showing that for flank wear levels up to 100 μm a superior surface roughness below 3 μm is accessible for hybrid additive manufacturing. Further, based on this correlation recommended tool, life scenarios can be deduced. In addition, by optimizing the finishing tool start position and the number of afore-built layers, the milling process is improved with respect to the maximum millable angle for undercut surfaces of 3D-printed parts to 30° for the roughing process and to 40° for the entire machining process including finishing.

We report on a comprehensive study to evaluate fundamental properties of a hybrid manufacturing approach, combining selective laser melting and high speed milling, and to characterize typical geometrical features and conclude on a catalogue of design rules. As for any additive manufacturing approach, the understanding of the machine properties and the process behaviour as well as such a selection guide is of upmost importance to foster the implementation of new machining concepts and support design engineers. Geometrical accuracy between digitally designed and physically realized parts made of maraging steel and dimensional limits are analyzed by stripe line projection. In particular, we identify design rules for numerous basic geometric elements like walls, cylinders, angles, inclinations, overhangs, notches, inner and outer radii of spheres, chamfers in build direction, and holes of different shape, respectively, as being manufactured by the hybrid approach and compare them to sole selective laser melting. While the cutting tool defines the manufacturability of, e.g., edges and corners, the milling itself improves the surface roughness to Ra < 2μm. Thus, the given advantages of this hybrid process, e.g., space-resolved and custom-designed roughness and the superior geometrical accuracy are evaluated. Finally, we exemplify the potential of this particular promising hybrid approach by demonstrating an injection mold with a conformal cooling for a charge socket for an electro mobile.

In this study, we report on a novel approach to produce defined porous selectively laser molten structures with predictable anisotropic permeability. For this purpose, in an initial step, the smallest possible wall proximity distance for selectively laser molten structures is investigated by applying a single line scan strategy. The obtained parameters are adapted to a rectangular and, subsequently, to a more complex honeycomb structure. As variation of the hatch distance directly affects the pore size, and thus the resulting porosity and finally permeability, we, in addition, propose and verify a mathematical correlation between selective laser melting process parameters, porosity, and permeability. Moreover, a triangular based anisotropic single line selectively laser molten structure is introduced, which offers the possibility of controlling the three-dimensional flow ratio of passing fluids. Basically, one spatial direction exhibits unhindered flow, whereas the second nearly completely prohibits any passage of the fluid. The amount to which the remaining orientation accounts for is controlled by spreading the basic triangular structure by variation of the included angle. As acute angles yield low passage ratios of 0.25 relative to continuous flow, more obtuse angles show increased ratios up to equal bidirectional flow. Hence, this novel procedure permits (for the first time) fabrication of selective laser molten structures with adjustable permeable properties independent of the applied process parameters.

In this contribution, we compare basic neural networks with convolutional neural networks for cut failure classification during fiber laser cutting. The experiments are performed by cutting thin electrical sheets with a 500 W single-mode fiber laser while taking coaxial camera images for the classification. The quality is grouped in the categories good cut, cuts with burr formation and cut interruptions. Indeed, our results reveal that both cut failures can be detected with one system. Independent of the neural network design and size, a minimum classification accuracy of 92.8% is achieved, which could be increased with more complex networks to 95.8%. Thus, convolutional neural networks reveal a slight performance advantage over basic neural networks, which yet is accompanied by a higher calculation time, which nevertheless is still below 2 ms. In a separated examination, cut interruptions can be detected with much higher accuracy as compared to burr formation. Overall, the results reveal the possibility to detect burr formations and cut interruptions during laser cutting simultaneously with high accuracy, as being desirable for industrial applications.

In this article, we summarize our investigations on optimized 248 nm deep ultraviolet (UV) fabrication of highly stable epoxy polymer Bragg grating sensors and their application for biomedical purposes. Employing m-line spectroscopy, deep UV photosensitivity of cross-linked EpoCore thin films in terms of responding refractive index change is determined to a maximum of Δn = + (1.8 ± 0.2) × 10 -3 . All-polymer waveguide Bragg gratings are fabricated by direct laser irradiation of lithographic EpoCore strip waveguides on compatible Topas 6017 substrates through standard +1/-1-order phase masks. According near-field simulations of realistic non-ideal phase masks provide insight into UV dose-dependent characteristics of the Bragg grating formation. By means of online monitoring, arising Bragg reflections during grating inscription via beforehand fiber-coupled waveguide samples, an optimum laser parameter set for well-detectable sensor reflection peaks in respect of peak strength, full width at half maximum and grating attenuation are derived. Promising blood analysis applications of optimized epoxy-based Bragg grating sensors are demonstrated in terms of bulk refractive index sensing of whole blood and selective surface refractive index sensing of human serum albumin.

In this publication, we use a small convolutional neural network to detect cut interruptions during laser cutting from single images of a high-speed camera. A camera takes images without additional illumination at a resolution of 32 × 64 pixels from cutting steel sheets of varying thicknesses with different laser parameter combinations and classifies them into cuts and cut interruptions. After a short learning period of five epochs on a certain sheet thickness, the images are classified with a low error rate of 0.05%. The use of color images reveals slight advantages with lower error rates over greyscale images, since, during cut interruptions, the image color changes towards blue. A training set on all sheet thicknesses in one network results in tests error rates below 0.1%. This low error rate and the short calculation time of 120 µs on a standard CPU makes the system industrially applicable.

We report on the exemplified realization of a digital to physical process chain for a patient individualized osteosynthesis plate for the tarsal bone area. Anonymized patient-specific data of the right feet were captured by computer tomography, which were then digitally processed to generate a surface file format (standard tessellation language, STL) ready for additive manufacturing. Physical realization by selective laser melting in titanium using optimized parameter settings and post-processing by stress relief annealing results in a customized osteosynthesis plate with superior properties fulfilling medical demands. High fitting accuracy was demonstrated by applying the osteosynthesis plate to an equally good 3D printed bone model, which likewise was generated using the patient-specific computer tomography (CT) data employing selective laser sintering and polyamid 12. Proper fixation has been achieved without any further manipulation of the plate using standard screws, proving that based on CT data, individualized implants well adapted to the anatomical conditions can be accomplished without the need for additional steps, such as bending, cutting and shape trimming of precast bone plates during the surgical intervention. Beyond parameter optimization for selective laser melting, this exemplified digital to physical process chain highlights the potential of additive manufacturing for individualized osteosynthesis.

We report on the generation of a cobalt-chromium dental framework with superior precision and fitting accuracy using selective laser melting. The objective of this study is the reduction of surface roughness and the possibility to manufacture a dental framework with high precision for passive fit with attachments, in particular a round tack. After selective laser melting, the dental framework is thermally post processed at 750 °C, shot-blasted with glass and highly polished. Nominal to actual 3D form deviation is analyzed by stripe light projection, revealing deviations being less than 250 μm, i.e., warpage is as low as to permit dental application and accurate passive fit. In particular, the critical area of the dental framework, the fixture to the implant (overdenture) shows negligible deviations. This superior fitting accuracy is confirmed by joining the bar with a testing stylus.

We introduced a new approach in selective laser sintering for hybrid multicomponent systems by fabricating the sintered polyamide 12 (PA12) part directly onto a similar (PA12) or dissimilar (polyamide 6 (PA6) and tool steel 1.2709) joining partner. Thus, the need for adhesive substances or joining pressure was completely circumvented, leading to the possibility of pure hybrid lightweight bi-polymer or metal-polymer systems. By taking advantage of the heating capabilities of the sinter laser regarding the substrate surface, different exposure strategies circumvented the lack of overlapping melting temperatures of dissimilar polymers. Therefore, even sintering on non-PA12 polymers was made possible. Finally, the transfer on metallic substrates-made up by selective laser melting (SLM)-was successfully performed, closing the gap between two powder-based additive processes, selective laser sintering (SLS) and SLM.

We report on the challenges in a hybrid sub-micrometer fabrication process while using three dimensional femtosecond direct laser writing and electroplating. With this hybrid subtractive and additive fabrication process, it is possible to generate metallic polarization elements with sub-wavelength dimensions of less than 400 nm in the cladding area. We show approaches for improving the adhesion of freestanding photoresist pillars as well as of the metallic cladding area, and we also demonstrate the avoidance of an inhibition layer and sticking of the freestanding pillars. Three-dimensional direct laser writing in a positive tone photoresist is used as a subtractive process to fabricate free-standing non-metallic photoresist pillars with an area of about 850 nm × 1400 nm, a height of 3000 nm, and a distance between the pillars of less than 400 nm. In a subsequent additive fabrication process, these channels are filled with gold by electrochemical deposition up to a final height of 2200 nm. Finally, the polarization elements are characterized by measuring the degree of polarization in order to show their behavior as quarter- and half-wave plates.

This article proposes and demonstrates a robust microstructure-based fiber-to-chip coupling scheme for planar Bragg grating devices. A polymer planar Bragg grating substrate is manufactured and microstructured by means of a micromilling process, while the respective photonic structures are generated by employing a sophisticated single-writing UV-exposure method. A stripped standard single mode fiber is inserted into the microstructure, which is filled with a UV-curable adhesive, and aligned with the integrated waveguide. After curing, final sensor assembly and thermal treatment, the proposed coupling scheme is capable of withstanding pressures up to 10 bar, at room temperature, and pressures up to 7.5 bar at an elevated temperature of 120 °C. Additionally, the coupling scheme is exceedingly robust towards tensile forces, limited only by the tensile strength of the employed single mode fiber. Due to its outstanding robustness, the coupling scheme enables the application of planar Bragg grating devices in harsh environments. This fact is underlined by integrating a microstructure-coupled photonic device into the center of a commercial-grade carbon fiber-reinforced polymer specimen. After its integration, the polymer-based Bragg grating sensor still exhibits a reflection peak with a dynamic range of 24 dB, and can thus be employed for sensing purposes.

This contribution demonstrates the functionality of polymer planar Bragg grating (PPBG) sensors integrated into commercial-grade carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) components. Multiple CFRP specimens are generated by curing a stack of pre-impregnated fibers inside of a heated mechanical press, exposing the polymer sensor to a pressure of 7 bar and a temperature of 120 °C for 2 h. After integration, the sensor still exhibits a strong and evaluable signal. Subsequent flexural experiments reveal a linear response of the integrated sensor's Bragg wavelength to the CFRP specimen's maximum deflection. Additional findings demonstrate that the embedded PPBG can be used to detect plastic deformations of a CFRP workpiece, whereas a linear correlation of plastic deformation to the resulting Bragg signal offset is determined. A plausibility check of the obtained results is delivered by a comparison of three-point flexural experiments on bulk CFRP workpieces, without integrated sensors and additional specimens featuring external optical sensors affixed to their surface. It is found that PPBGs based on cyclic olefin copolymers are able to overcome the temperature-related limitations of traditional polymer-based optical sensors and can thus be directly integrated into commercial-grade composites during production.

We report on an experimental study and statistical optimization of the surface roughness using design of experiments and the Taguchi method for parts made of 1.2709 maraging steel. We employ a hybrid additive manufacturing approach that combines additive manufacturing by selective laser melting with subtractive manufacturing using milling in an automated process within a single machine. Input parameters such as laser power, scan speed, and hatching distance have been varied in order to improve surface quality of unmachined surfaces. Cutting speed, feed per tooth, and radial depth of cut have been varied to optimize surface roughness of the milled surfaces. The surfaces of the samples were characterized using 3D profilometry. Scan speed was determined as the most important parameter for non-machined surfaces; radial depth of cut was found to be the most significant parameter for milled surfaces. Areal surface roughness S a could be reduced by up to 40% for unmachined samples and by 23% for milled samples as compared to the prior state of the art.

Flexible epoxy waveguide Bragg gratings are fabricated on a low-modulus TPX™ polymethylpentene polyolefin substrate for an easy to manufacture and low-cost optomechanical sensor pad providing exceedingly multipurpose application potentials. Rectangular EpoCore negative resist strip waveguides are formed employing standard UV mask lithography. Highly persistent Bragg gratings are inscribed directly into the channel waveguides by permanently modifying the local refractive indices through a well-defined KrF excimer laser irradiated +1/-1 order phase mask. The reproducible and vastly versatile sensing capabilities of this easy-to-apply optomechanical sensor pad are demonstrated in the form of an optical pickup for acoustic instruments, a broadband optical accelerometer, and a biomedical vital sign sensor monitoring both respiration and pulse at the same time.

Trichlorofluoromethane was once a promising and versatile applicable chlorofluorocarbon. Unaware of its ozone-depleting character, for a long time it was globally applied as propellant and refrigerant and thus led to significant thinning of the ozone layer and contributed to the formation of the so-called ozone hole. Although production and application of this substance were gradually reduced at an early stage, we still face the consequences of its former careless use. Today, trichlorofluoromethane is released during recycling processes of waste cooling devices, traded on the black market, and according to recent findings still illegally manufactured. Here, we present an optical sensor device for real-time in-situ detection and measurement of this environmentally harmful chlorofluorocarbon. The described sensor is based on a planar Bragg grating that is functionalized with cyclodextrin derivatives and operates on the principle of a chemical sensor. In our study, the sensor is sensitized using per -methyl-, per -ethyl-, and per -allyl-substituted α -, β -, and γ -cyclodextrins as affinity materials for airborne trichlorofluoromethane. These functional coatings have been proven to be highly efficient, as an up to 400-times stronger signal deflection could be achieved compared to an identical but uncoated sensor. The presented sensor device shows instantaneous response to trichlorofluoromethane exposure, and features a limit-of-detection of less than 25 ppm, depending on the applied affinity material.

Embedded channel waveguide Bragg gratings are fabricated in the Ormocer ® hybrid polymers OrmoComp ® , OrmoCore, and OrmoClad by employing a single writing step technique based on phase mask technology and KrF excimer laser irradiation. All waveguide Bragg gratings exhibit well-defined reflection peaks within the telecom wavelengths range with peak heights of up to 35 dB and -3 dB-bandwidths of down to 95 pm. Furthermore, the dependency of the fabricated embedded channel waveguide Bragg gratings on changes of the temperature and relative humidity are investigated. Here, we found that the Bragg grating in OrmoComp ® is significantly influenced by humidity variations, while the Bragg gratings in OrmoCore and OrmoClad exhibit linear and considerably high temperature sensitivities of up to -250 pm/ ∘ C and a linear dependency on the relative humidity in the range of -9 pm/%.

We report on the fabrication of a superstructure Bragg grating in a planar polymer substrate. Based on a twofold illumination process an integrated waveguide and a superstructure Bragg grating are subsequently written into bulk polymethylmethacrylate by UV-induced refractive index modification. The measured reflected spectrum of the superstructure Bragg grating exhibits multiple reflection peaks and is in good agreement with performed standard simulations based on the beam propagation method and coupled mode theory algorithms. By applying a varying tensile load we determine the strain sensitivity to be about 1.10 pm/µε and demonstrate the applicability of the superstructure Bragg grating for strain measurements with redundant sensing signals.

We demonstrate the application of polymer planar Bragg gratings for multi-axial strain sensing and particularly highlight simultaneous 2D strain measurement. A polymer planar Bragg grating (PPBG) fabricated with a single writing step in bulk polymethylmethacrylate is used for measuring both tensile and compressive strain at various angles. It is shown that the sensitivity of the PPBG strongly depends on the angle between the optical waveguide into which the grating is inscribed and the direction along which the mechanical load is applied. Additionally, a 2D PPBG fabricated by writing two Bragg gratings angularly displaced from each other into a single polymer platelet is bonded to a stainless steel plate. The two reflected wavelengths exhibit different sensitivities while tested toward tensile and compressive strain. These characteristics make 2D PPBG suitable for measuring multi-axial tensile and compressive strain.

We report an optical refractive index sensor system based on a planar Bragg grating which is functionalized by substituted γ-cyclodextrin to determine low concentrations of naphthalene in solvent vapor. The sensor system exhibits a quasi-instantaneous shift of the Bragg wavelength and is therefore capable for online detection. The overall shift of the Bragg wavelength reveals a linear relationship to the analyte concentration with a gradient of 12.5 ± 1.5 pm/ppm. Due to the spectral resolution and repeatability of the interrogation system, this corresponds to acquisition steps of 80 ppb. Taking into account the experimentally detected signal noise a minimum detection limit of 0.48 ± 0.05 ppm is deduced.
