The removal of pollutants, including heavy metals, from the aquatic environment is an urgent problem worldwide. Actively developing nanotechnology areas is becoming increasingly important for solving problems in the field of the remediation of aquatic ecosystems. In particular, methods for removing pollutants using nanoparticles (NPs) are proposed, which raises the question of the effect of a combination of NPs and heavy metals on living organisms. In this work, we investigated the role of CuO-NPs in changing the toxicity of Cd and Pb salts, as well as the bioaccumulation of these elements in a culture of the microalga Desmodesmus communis. It was found that CuO-NPs at concentrations of 10, 100, and 1000 µg L−1 had no effect on the viability of microalgae cells. On the 14th day of the experiment, Cd at a concentration of 1 mg L−1 reduced the viability index by 30% and, when combined with CuO-NPs, by 25%, i.e., CuO-NPs slightly reduced the toxic effect of Cd. At the same time, in this experiment, when CuO-NPs and Cd were used together, the level of oxidative stress increased, including on the first day in mixtures with 1 mg L−1 Cd. Under the influence of Pb, the cell viability index decreased by 70% by the end of the experiment, regardless of the metal concentration. The presence of CuO-NPs slightly reduced the toxicity of Pb in terms of viability and reactive oxygen species (ROS). At the same time, unlike Cd, Pb without NPs caused ROS production on the first day, whereas the addition of CuO-NPs completely detoxified Pb at the beginning and had a dose-dependent effect on mixtures at the end of the experiment. Also, the introduction of CuO-NPs slightly reduced the negative effect of Pb on pigment synthesis. As a molecular mechanism of the observed effects, we prioritized the provocation of oxidative stress by nanoparticles and related gene expression and biochemical reactions of algae cells. Analysis of the effect of CuO-NPs on the Cd and Pb content in microalgae cells showed increased accumulation of heavy metals. Thus, when algae were cultured in an environment with Cd and CuO-NPs, the Cd content per cell increased 4.2 times compared to the variant where cells were cultured only with Cd. In the case of Pb, the increase in its content per one cell increased 6.2 times when microalgae were cultured in an environment containing CuO-NPs. Thus, we found that CuO-NPs reduce the toxic effects of Cd and Pb, as well as significantly enhance the bioaccumulation of these toxic elements in the cells of D. communis microalgae. This study investigates heavy metal contamination in soils, irrigation water, and agricultural produce (fruits: Vitis vinifera (grape), Cucumis melo var. saccharimus (melon), and Citrullus vulgaris. Schrade (watermelon); vegetables: Lycopersicum esculentum L. (tomato), Cucurbita pepo (zucchini), Daucus carota (carrot), Lactuca sativa (lettuce), Convolvulus Batatas (potato), and Capsicum annuum L. (green pepper)) in the Boumerdes region of Algeria. The concentrations of seven heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)) in soil and food samples were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Health risks associated with these metals were evaluated through the estimated daily intake (EDI), non-carcinogenic risks (using target hazard quotient (THQ), total target hazard quotient (TTHQ), and hazard index (HI)), and carcinogenic risks (cancer risk factor (CR)). Statistical analyses, including cluster analysis (CA) and Pearson correlation, were conducted to interpret the data. The results revealed the highest metal transfer as follows: Cd was most significantly transferred to tomatoes and watermelons; Cr to carrots; Cu to tomatoes; and Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn to lettuce. Among fruits, the highest EDI values were for Zn (2.54·10−3 mg/day) and Cu (1.17·10−3 mg/day), with melons showing the highest Zn levels. For vegetables, the highest EDI values were for Fe (1.68·10−2 mg/day) and Zn (8.37·10−3 mg/day), with potatoes showing the highest Fe levels. Although all heavy metal concentrations were within the World Health Organization's permissible limits, the HI and TTHQ values indicated potential health risks, particularly from vegetable consumption. The root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (SMB) has been widely used to treat cardiovascular diseases. However, the contents of secondary metabolites in the roots from different production areas are significantly different, and the impact of soil factors on this accumulation remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the regularity of variation between the active components and soil factors through targeted metabolomics and chemical dosimetry. Soils were collected from five different cities (A, B, C, D, and E) and transplanted into the study area. The results showed that there were significant differences in the soil fertility characteristics and heavy metal pollution levels in different soils. Ten water- and twelve lipid-soluble metabolites were identified in SMBs grown in all soil types. SMBs from D cities exhibited the highest total tanshinone content (p < 0.05). The salvianolic acid B content in SMBs from E cities was the highest (p < 0.05). Interestingly, correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the accumulation of lipid-soluble and water-soluble metabolites. Double-matrix correlation analysis demonstrated that available potassium (AK) was significantly negatively correlated with salvianolic acid B (r = −0.80, p = 0.0004) and positively correlated with tanshinone IIA (r = 0.66, p = 0.008). Conversely, cadmium (Cd) and cuprum (Cu) were significantly positively and negatively correlated with salvianolic acid B (r = 0.96, p < 0.0001 and r = 0.72, p = 0.0024) and tanshinone IIA (r = 0.40, p = 0.14 and r = 0.73, p = 0.0018), respectively. Mantel's test indicated that AK (r > 0.52, p < 0.001), Cu (r > 0.60, p < 0.005), and Cd (r > 0.31, p < 0.05) were the primary drivers of the differences in the active components of SMBs. These findings provide a theoretical framework for modulating targeted metabolites of SMB through soil factors, with significant implications for the cultivation and quality control of medicinal plants. In this study, nanoporous gold (NPG) was deposited on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) by the dynamic hydrogen bubble template (DHBT) method to prepare an electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of Pb2+ and Cu2+ by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV). The electrodeposition potential and electrodeposition time for NPG/SPCE preparation were investigated thoroughly. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX) analysis confirmed successful fabrication of the NPG-modified electrode. Electrochemical characterization exhibits its superior electron transfer ability compared with bare and nanogold-modified electrodes. After a comprehensive optimization, Pb2+ and Cu2+ were simultaneously determined with linear range of 1–100 μg/L for Pb2+ and 10–100 μg/L for Cu2+, respectively. The limits of detection were determined to be 0.4 μg/L and 5.4 μg/L for Pb2+ and Cu2+, respectively. This method offers a broad linear detection range, a low detection limit, and good reliability for heavy metal determination in drinking water. Heavy metal contamination in soils and vegetation poses a significant problem due to its toxicity and persistence. Toxic effects on vegetation include not only impaired growth, reduced yields, and even plant death but also biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive monitoring and remediation efforts to mitigate the environmental, human health, and ecological impacts. This review examines the state-of-the-art methodologies and advancements in remote sensing applications for detecting and monitoring heavy metal contamination in soil and its subsequent effects on vegetation. By synthesizing the current research findings and technological developments, this review offers insights into the efficacy and potential of remote sensing for monitoring heavy metal contamination in terrestrial ecosystems. However, current studies focus on regression and AI methods to link spectral reflectances and indices to heavy metal concentrations, which poses limited transferability to other areas, times, spectral discretizations, and heavy metal elements. We conclude that one important way forward is the more thorough understanding and simulation of the related physico-chemical processes in soils and plants and their effects on the spectral signatures. This would offer a profound basis for remote sensing applications for individual circumstances and would allow disentangling heavy metal effects from other stressors such as droughts or soil salinity. Mercury, a highly toxic metal and pollutant, poses a significant risk to human health and the environment. This study describes the synthesis of a new nitrogen-doped heteroaromatic hyper-crosslinked polyamine (HCPA) via the polycondensation of 2,6-diaminopyrazine and tris(4-formylphenyl)amine for the efficient removal of mercury ions from aqueous solutions. The HCPA polymer was characterized by solid-state 13C-NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. A powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis showed that the polymer was semicrystalline in nature and stable up to 500 °C. Adsorption isotherms indicated that mercury adsorption occurred via mono- and multilayer adsorption by HCPA, as depicted by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich–Peterson isotherm models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of qm = 333.3 mg/g. Adsorption kinetic models suggested that the adsorption process was fast and effective, reaching equilibrium within 20 min. Thermodynamics of the adsorption process revealed that it was endothermic and spontaneous in nature due to the positive ΔH0 of 48 kJ/mol and negative ΔG0 values of −4.5 kJ/mol at 293 K. Wastewater treatment revealed 98% removal of mercury indicating the selective nature of HCPA. Finally, HCPA exhibited excellent performance and regeneration up to three cycles, demonstrating its great potential as an adsorbent for environmental remediation applications. High levels of heavy metal contamination in soil present substantial threats to human health and the environment, leading to severe health problems such as neurotoxicity, cancer, kidney issues, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and reduced life expectancy. This research aims to identify and analyze heavy metals in soil samples collected from Superfund sites in North Birmingham, Alabama, specifically in affected areas with zip codes 35207 and 35217 and control area 35214. These affected areas were previously used for mining, coal-fired power plants, coke furnaces, smelting, and other potential sources of heavy metal pollution. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was employed to study 60 soil samples systematically collected from affected and control areas. We found that by using LIBS, we could detect arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and manganese (Mn) in all soil samples from the affected areas. The limit of detection (LoD) was 29.5 mg/kg for Pb, 95.5 mg/kg for As, and 327 mg/kg for Mn using specific parameters of the detection system and/or argon gas purging at atmospheric pressure. The results were compared with ICP-MS measurements to validate the accuracy of the LIBS findings. Lake Markakol is located in a metal-rich mountain area of Kazakhstan. Metal input into the lake water and in the bottom sediments can be expected. Lead, cobalt and nickel monitoring in both near-surface and deep-water layers and in bottom sediments was carried out using flame atomic absorption spectrometric analyses. Lead contamination of surface water ranging from 2.6 to 6.8 µg/L occurs in all water samples with the exception of the surface water layer. In the deep-water section concentrations reach up to 13.0–16.2 µg/L. Cobalt concentrations range from 36.8 to 67.5 µg/L in the surface layer and from 25.5 to 69.2 µg/L in the deep-water layer. High values of nickel were found in the surface and bottom layers of the water, ranging from 13.5 to 49.0 and 17.2 to 49.0 µg/L, respectively. High concentrations of lead, cobalt and nickel were identified in all samples of the bottom sediments. The lead content in bottom sediments reaches 11.3, cobalt reaches 10.3–18.0 and nickel reaches 15.0 mg kg−1. The results and their assessment can serve as a basis for future monitoring and measures to reduce pollution, restore the lake ecosystem and ensure the safety of fishery products for humans. The increasing demand for mineral resources has generated mine tailings with heavy metals (HM) that negatively impact human and ecosystem health. Therefore, it is necessary to implement strategies that promote the immobilization or elimination of HM, like phytoremediation. However, the toxic effect of metals may affect plant establishment, growth, and fitness, reducing phytoremediation efficiency. Therefore, adding organic amendments to mine tailings, such as biochar, can favor the establishment of plants, reducing the bioavailability of HM and its subsequent incorporation into the food chain. Here, we evaluated HM bioaccumulation, biomass, morphological characters, chlorophyll content, and genotoxic damage in the herbaceous Crotalaria pumila to assess its potential for phytostabilization of HM in mine tailings. The study was carried out for 100 days on plants developed under greenhouse conditions under two treatments (tailing substrate and 75% tailing/25% coconut fiber biochar substrate); every 25 days, 12 plants were selected per treatment. C. pumila registered the following bioaccumulation patterns: Pb > Zn > Cu > Cd in root and in leaf tissues. Furthermore, the results showed that individuals that grew on mine tailing substrate bioaccumulated many times more metals (Zn: 2.1, Cu: 1.8, Cd: 5.0, Pb: 3.0) and showed higher genetic damage levels (1.5 times higher) compared to individuals grown on mine tailing substrate with biochar. In contrast, individuals grown on mine tailing substrate with biochar documented higher chlorophyll a and b content (1.1 times more, for both), as well as higher biomass (1.5 times more). Therefore, adding coconut fiber biochar to mine tailing has a positive effect on the establishment and development of C. pumila individuals with the potential to phytoextract and phytostabilize HM from polluted soils. Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinu) is a grass bast fiber crop that has the ability to tolerate and accumulate heavy metals, and it has been considered as a potential heavy metal accumulator and remediation plant. Nramp is a natural resistance-related macrophage, which plays an important role in the transport of divalent metal ions, plant growth and development, and abiotic stress. In this study, the Nramp gene family of kenaf was analyzed at the whole genome level. A total of 15 HcNramp genes were identified. They are distributed unevenly on chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis classified 15 HcNramp proteins into 3 different subfamilies. All proteins share specific motif 4 and motif 6, and the genes belonging to the same subfamily are similar in structure and motif. The promoters are rich in hormone response, meristem expression, and environmental stress response elements. Under different treatments, the expression levels of HcNramp genes vary in different tissues, and most of them are expressed in roots first. These findings can provide a basis for understanding the potential role of the Nramp gene family in kenaf in response to cadmium (Cd) stress, and are of great significance for screening related Cd tolerance genes in kenaf. Background: Leafy greens, particularly romaine lettuce, are often associated with outbreaks due to their susceptibility to contamination from various environmental sources. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of E. coli, Salmonella, copper, nickel, zinc, and manganese in irrigation water, lettuce leaves, and agricultural soil in the Litani River Basin (LRB), Lebanon. Method: Samples were collected from five demonstration plots employing different agricultural practices. Heavy metal concentrations were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry, while E. coli and Salmonella testing were conducted through conventional culturing techniques. The impact of E. coli contamination on seed germination and the interaction effects between E. coli and heavy metals were also examined. The study also compared the effectiveness of various irrigation systems in reducing bacterial contamination. Results: The results demonstrated that contamination levels varied significantly across the plots and irrigation types. This variation underscores the necessity of site-specific mitigation strategies to enhance food safety. Our findings highlight the importance of selecting appropriate irrigation methods and implementing tailored agricultural practices to minimize the risk of contamination. The bioavailability of heavy metals in soil is a crucial factor in determining their potential uptake by plants and their subsequent entry into the food chain. Various methods, including traditional chemical extractants and the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique, are employed to assess this bioavailability. The bioavailability of heavy metals, particularly cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), is also influenced by soil texture and their concentrations in the soil solution. The primary objectives of this experiment were to compare and correlate the assessment of the Cd and Pb bioavailability using the DGT technique and traditional extractants across two soil textural classes: sandy clay loam (SCL) and clay loam (CL) at two contamination levels: aged contaminated (NC) and artificially contaminated (AC). The specific objectives included assessing the bioavailability of Cd and Pb at different growth stages of the wheat plant and correlating the DGT-based bioassessments of Cd and Pb with their concentrations in various plant parts at different growth stages. This study also compared the effectiveness of the DGT method and traditional extraction techniques in assessing the bioavailable fractions of Cd and Pb in soil. The regression analysis demonstrated strong positive correlations between the DGT method and various extraction methods. The results showed that the wheat plants grown in the AC soils exhibited lower root, shoot, and grain weights compared to those grown in the NC soils, indicating that metal contamination negatively impacts plant performance. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in the wheat tissues varied across different growth stages, with the highest levels observed during the grain filling (S3) and maturity (S4) stages. It is concluded that the in situ assessment of Cd and Pb though DGT was strongly and positively correlated with the Cd and Pb concentration in wheat plant parts at the maturity stage. A correlation and regression analysis of the DGT assessment and traditional extractants showed that the DGT method provides a reliable tool for assessing the bioavailability of Cd and Pb in soils and helped in developing sustainable soil management strategies to ensure the safety of agricultural products for human consumption. In aquaponic farming, there is a potential risk that heavy metals will contaminate the water, which can lead to heavy metal accumulation in the plants. Our research investigated the accumulation of mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) under aquaponic conditions and the effect of their increased presence on the uptake of other macro- and micronutrients using watercress (Nasturtium officinale) as a model plant. The potential modifying effect of humic acid on heavy metal accumulation was also investigated. Adding Hg and Pb increased the mercury and lead levels of the watercress plants to over 300 µg kg−1, while the addition of humic acid significantly reduced the concentration of both mercury and lead in the plants compared to plants treated with heavy metals alone, from 310.647 µg kg−1 to 196.320 µg kg−1 for Hg and from 313.962 µg kg−1 to 203.508 µg kg−1 for Pb. For Fe and Mn, higher values were obtained for the Hg + humic acid treatments (188.13 mg kg−1 and 6423.92 µg kg−1, respectively) and for the Pb + humic acid treatments (198.26 mg kg−1 and 6454.31 µg kg−1, respectively). Conversely, the Na, K, Cu levels were lower compared to those in plants treated with heavy metals alone. Our results demonstrated that watercress can accumulate mercury, leading to high levels, even above food safety standards, highlighting the importance of water quality control in aquaponic systems. Furthermore, these results suggest that watercress could be used as a natural filter in recirculation systems. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that accumulates in plants, negatively affecting their physiological processes, growth, and development, and poses a threat to human health through the food chain. 6-phosphogluconolactonase (PGL) is a key enzyme in the Oxidative Pentose Phosphate Pathway(OPPP) in plant cells, essential for cellular metabolism. The OPPP pathway provides energy and raw materials for organisms and is involved in antioxidant reactions, lipid metabolism, and DNA synthesis. This study describes the Cd responsive gene AetPGL from Aegilops tauschii. Overexpression of AetPGL under Cd stress increased main root length and germination rate in Arabidopsis. Transgenic lines showed higher antioxidant enzyme activities and lower malondialdehyde (MDA) content compared to the wild type. The transgenic Arabidopsis accumulated more Cd in the aboveground part but not in the underground part. Expression levels of AtHMA3, AtNRAMP5, and AtZIP1 in the roots of transgenic plants increased under Cd stress, suggesting AetPGL may enhance Cd transport from root to shoot. Transcriptome analysis revealed enrichment of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the plant hormone signal transduction pathway in AetPGL-overexpressing plants. Brassinosteroids (BR), Gibbenellin acid (GA), and Jasmonic acid (JA) contents significantly increased after Cd treatment. These results indicate that AetPGL may enhance Arabidopsis' tolerance to Cd by modulating plant hormone content. The impact of trace metal elements (TMEs) on plants is one current pollution problem, the severity of which is increasing with industrial development, population growth and inappropriate agricultural practices. The latter can have irreversible effects on ecosystems, including species extinction, trophic chain contamination and altered human health, particularly in the case of consumed plants such as zucchini squash (Cucurbita pepo L.). This study aims to investigate the effects of nickel on various physiological and biochemical parameters of zucchini growth, with a particular focus on how this toxic metal impacts the quality of fruit that is consumed by humans. To achieve this, plants aged 45 days were grown for one month on solid media loaded with different concentrations of Ni (0, 100, 300 and 500 µM). The results showed that exposure of plants to Ni resulted in significantly altered growth and higher accumulation of Ni in the shoots (1314 µg·g−1 DW) than in roots and fruits. Concerning non-enzymatic antioxidants, the results showed that Ni toxicity significantly increased total polyphenols, especially in shoots at 300 µM Ni, while flavonoid content decreased in the roots and shoots in response to Ni treatment. Our results also show that nickel tolerance in C. pepo is ensured by a combination of several mechanisms such as an increase in the content of proline. This species can survive and tolerate, to different degrees, toxic cations at concentrations up to 500 µM but with visible symptoms of toxicity such as chlorosis of the leaves. Heavy metal ions such as cadmium, mercury, lead, and arsenic in the soil cannot be degraded naturally and are absorbed by crops, leading to accumulation in agricultural products, which poses a serious threat to human health. Therefore, establishing a rapid and efficient method for detecting heavy metal ions in agricultural products is of great significance to ensuring the health and safety. In this study, a novel optimized spectrometric method was developed for the rapid and specific colorimetric detection of cadmium ions based on N-(2-Acetamido)-iminodiacetic acid (ADA) and Victoria blue B (VBB) as the chromogenic unit. The safety evaluation of ADA showed extremely low biological toxicity in cultured cells and live animals. The standard curve is y = 0.0212x + 0.1723, R2 = 0.9978, and LOD = 0.08 μM (0.018 mg/kg). The liner concentrations detection range of cadmium is 0.1–10 μM. An inexpensive paper strip detection method was developed with a detection limit of 0.2 μM to the naked eye and a detection time of less than 1 min. The method was successfully used to assess the cadmium content of rice, soybean, milk, grape, peach, and cabbage, and the results correlated well with those determined by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Climate changes linked to extreme events pose a threat to freshwater biodiversity, impacting organs, behaviour, and reproduction. Moreover, these changes can be amplified by pollution. Copper sulphate (CuSO4) is used in agriculture and aquaculture, so the copper can reach streams, rivers, and lakes impacting fish. This study evaluated the combined effects of temperature and copper on gills and liver histology biomarkers and in the behaviour of Mozambique tilapia over 28 days. Tilapias were exposed to different water temperatures (25 °C and 32 °C) and CuSO4 concentrations (1.1 and 3.6 mg/L). Fish from the control group were exposed to water without copper sulphate and at 25 °C (within their optimum range). Histopathological analysis revealed significant tissue lesions, namely aneurysms and bending of gill lamellae, and hyalinization and vacuolization in the liver at the higher temperature and CuSO4 level. Moreover, behavioural observations revealed increased stress changes under the same conditions. These findings highlight the effects of fast climate change, and rising temperatures on copper toxicity, underlining the necessity for strict monitoring and regulation of copper use due to future climate change scenarios to protect aquatic ecosystems, ichthyofauna population and trophic web dynamics. This data also alerts for similar problems with other toxic metals or chemicals, at short term, in streams and rivers, under rapid climate changes and more frequent extreme events. Monitoring and protecting flowing watercourses is a complex and challenging task that requires the collaboration and coordination of various stakeholders such as governments, industries, farmers, consumers and environmental groups. The study of the dynamics of the concentration of polluting factors and especially the concentrations of heavy metals and highlighting a seasonal variation is a necessary element from this point of view. In this article, we present the results of our analyses carried out in two measurement campaigns executed in 10 monitoring points along the Danube River, between Braila city and Isaccea city in the pre-deltaic area, during the summer season and autumn season 2022. The importance of this area is given by the fact that the Danube Delta is part of the UNESCO heritage, and the monitoring of polluting factors is a necessity in the desire to protect this area. The data measured during the July and August 2022 campaign cover a wide range of chemical species: Phosphate, CCO, CBO5, NH4+, N-NO2, N-NO3−, N-Total, P-PO4 3−, SO42−, Cl−, phenols, as well as metals with a harmful effect: Al, As, Cd, Cr, Fe. The study includes an evaluation based on the statistical approach of the results to highlight the significant correlations and differences identified between the two data sets. Next, to highlight the obtained results, a numerical model was considered using HEC-RAS and ESRI ArcGIS applications in a two-dimensional unsteady flow model in order to obtain the non-homogenous concentrations' distributions in the studied area. These two-dimensional models have been less studied in the specialized literature. In this way, interesting results could be obtained, and prediction methods regarding the dynamics of metal concentrations could be structured. The data obtained were used for the terrain model from the USGS service, and the flows of the Danube and its two tributaries were simulated using the data provided by the national services. In this work, we present the results obtained for the dynamics of the concentrations of the metals Al, As, Cd, Cr and Fe and the evaluation of the specific absorption coefficients for the explanation and correlation with the results of the measurements. Except for the numerical model presented, we would like to highlight the existence of some contributions of the main tributaries of the Danube in the study area. Such a systematic study has not been carried out due to conditions imposed by the border authorities. From this point of view, this study has an element of originality. The study is part of a more complex project in which the spatio-temporal distribution of the polluting factors in the water was evaluated, and the habitats in the study area were inventoried—especially those of community interest. In this way, we were able to expose the self-purification capacity of the Danube and highlight the existence of a concentration reduction gradient along the course of the river. In the face of current challenges related to climate change, maintaining the appropriate quality of freshwater becomes crucial. This study examined the effectiveness of removing heavy metals (Cu(II) and Co(II)) using Chlorella vulgaris biosorbents (dietary supplements in the form of powder). This study determined the parameters of the biosorbent (point of zero charge (PZC) analysis using scanning electron microscopy with back-scattered electron (SEM-BSE) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis). Batch tests were also performed to determine the kinetic constants and adsorption equilibrium of Cu(II) and Co(II) ions. Based on the conducted research, it was found that a pseudo-second-order equation describes the kinetics of the biosorption process. Among the studied adsorption isotherms, the Langmuir and Freundlich models fit best. The results indicate that single-layer adsorption took place and Chlorella vulgaris is a microporous adsorbent. The maximum sorption capacity in the single-component system for Cu(II) and Co(II) was 30.3 mg·g−1 and 9.0 mg·g−1, respectively. In contrast, in the binary system, it was 20.8 mg·g−1 and 19.6 mg·g−1 (extended Langmuir model) and 23.5 mg·g−1 and 19.6 mg·g−1 (Jain-Snoeyinka model). Chlorella vulgaris is an effective biosorbent for removing heavy metals from freshwater. This study investigates the removal of heavy metals, particularly copper and nickel, from acidic aqueous solutions using the weakly base polymeric chelating resin Dowex M-4195. The research conducts comprehensive cost–benefit and statistical analyses of various kinetic and isotherm adsorption models. The results show that the PSO and general order models provide high accuracy for the Cu2⁺ adsorption kinetics, while the Avrami fractional order model excels for Ni2⁺. In terms of the isotherm models, the Langmuir and Jovanovic models are highly accurate for both metals, with the Toth model being particularly effective for Ni2⁺ due to its ability to account for surface heterogeneity and multi-layer adsorption. This study also reveals that the kinetic adsorption process is more economically beneficial than the isotherm adsorption process, highlighting the importance of model selection for optimizing heavy metal removal. Incorporating circular economy principles, this research emphasizes the sustainability of using regenerable and reusable adsorbents like Dowex M-4195. Microbial remediation has become a prominent focus in soil pollution control due to its environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and high efficiency. The effectiveness of microbial remediation is rooted in the interactions between microbial metabolic activities and the soil environment. Various microorganisms employ distinct mechanisms for pollutant treatment, including surface adsorption, intracellular accumulation, and biomineralization. Using the Web of Science Core Collection database, tools such as CiteSpace 6.1.R6, VOSviewer 1.6.20, and HistCite Pro were employed to conduct a quantitative analysis of several key aspects: the volume and thematic distribution of research papers on microbial remediation of soils, the cooperative networks between countries and institutions, the leading journals, major research hotspots, and emerging trends. The analysis reveals that utilizing microbial regulatory mechanisms and functions to remediate inorganic pollutants, such as heavy metals, and organic pollutants, such as PAHs, is becoming a significant frontier in future research. This study provides a valuable reference for scholars aiming to understand the current status of microbial research in soil remediation, both domestically and internationally. It also offers guidance for developing efficient, sustainable, and safe remediation strategies while identifying directions for future innovative research. The specific results are as follows: (1) China, the USA, India, and other countries have a high frequency of citations in this field, and the research is more in-depth. To seek a restoration plan for the safe use of agricultural land around mining areas, this study focuses on the regions around a mining plant in Huidong County, western Sichuan Province, affected by lead–zinc mining, and the precise remediation of heavy metal pollution through large-scale synthesis of iron silicate. In this study, we investigated heavy metal pollution in the vicinity of the mining area and proposed a treatment strategy using large-scale synthesis of iron silicate to mitigate this pollution. According to field investigation and sampling analysis, the collected soil samples contained excessive Cd, Pb, and Zn. Cd is a heavy metal related to lead–zinc mining. The planting of crops such as loquats and garlic with a high accumulation coefficient for Cd was found inappropriate for the research area. Instead, it was recommended to plant economically important crops like mangoes and peaches which had lower heavy metal accumulation. On the basis of field investigation, the study area was seriously polluted by heavy metals, among which Cd was 4.0 times higher than the standard of agricultural land. In order to accurately passivate excessive Cd, Zn, and Pb, iron silicate material was put into mass production. In situ passivation experiments showed that when the soil water content was between 25% and 20%, adding 4% silicate material could rapidly reduce the content of effective heavy metals in the soil and the heavy metal content of garlic and other cash crops in the research area by about 8%. After conducting a field investigation, it has been determined that the large-scale preparation of iron silicate can accurately repair soil contaminated by heavy metals in the vicinity of mining areas. Heavy metal pollution not only causes detrimental effects on the environment but also poses threats to human health; thus, it is crucial to monitor the heavy metal content in the soil. Hyperspectral technology, characterized by high spectral resolution, rapid response, and non-destructive detection, is widely employed in soil composition monitoring. This study aims to investigate the effects of dimensionality reduction methods on the performance of hyperspectral inversion. To this end, 56 soil samples were collected in Daye, with the corresponding hyperspectral data acquired by the advanced ASD Fieldspec4 instrument. We employed the linear dimensionality reduction method, i.e., the principal component analysis (PCA), and non-linear method in terms of kernel PCA (KPCA) with polynomial, radial basis function (RBF), and sigmoid kernels to reduce the dimensionalities of original spectral reflectance and that processed by first-derivative transformation (FDT). Building upon this foundation, we applied the Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost) algorithm for inverting the soil copper (Cu) content. The performance of each inversion model was evaluated by evaluation indices in terms of the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and residual prediction deviation (RPD). The results revealed that the KPCA with polynomial kernel function applied to the FDT-based spectra could yield the optimal inversion accuracy, with corresponding R2, RMSE, and RPD being 0.86, 21.47 mg·kg−1, and 2.72, respectively. This study demonstrates that applying the FDT with KPCA processing can significantly improve the accuracy of the hyperspectral inversion for soil Cu content, providing a potential approach for monitoring heavy metal pollution using hyperspectral technology. This study investigates, in the first part, the synthesis and purification of a poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) using natural Moroccan phosphate (Boucraa region) as a raw material. Despite its successful preparation, the obtained HAp was contaminated by several metallic cations (mostly Cd, Pb, Sn, Ti, Mn, Mg, Fe, and Al) migrated from the natural rocks during the digestion process, inhibiting HAp application in several sectors. To minimize the existence of these elements, the dissolution–precipitation technique (DP) was investigated as a non-selective purification process. Following the initial DP cycle conducted on the precipitated HAp, the removal efficiency was approximately 60% for Al, Fe, Mg, Mn, and Ti and 90% for Cd and Pb. After three consecutive DP cycles, notable improvement in the removal efficiency was observed, reaching 66% for Fe, 69% for Mg, 73% for Mn, and 74% for Al, while Cd, Pb, and Ti were totally removed. In the second part of this study, the purified HAp was digested using sulfuric acid to produce high-quality phosphoric acid (PA) and gypsum (GP). The elemental analysis of the PA indicates a removal efficiency of approximately 89% for Fe and over 94% for all the examined cations. In addition, the generated GP was dominated by SO3 and CaO accompanied with minor impurities. Overall, this simple process proves to be practically useful, to reduce a broad spectrum of cationic impurities, and to be flexible to prepare valuable products such hydroxyapatite, phosphoric acid, and gypsum. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are representative indoor air pollutants that negatively affect the human body owing to their toxicity. One of the most promising methods for VOC removal is photocatalytic degradation using TiO2. In this study, the addition of carbon black (CB) and heavy metal nanoparticles (NPs) was investigated to improve the efficiency of a TiO2-based photocatalytic VOC decomposition system combined with ultrasonic atomization and ultraviolet irradiation, as described previously. The aim of this study was to preliminarily determine the content of bioactive components in the fruiting bodies of four previously unstudied mushroom species: Aleuria aurantia, Phallus hadriani, Phanus conchatus, Geastrum pectinatum, their antioxidant activity and the content of polyphenols, minerals and heavy metals. Methods: Determination of active compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was carried out in addition to thermogravimetric determinations, quantitative determination of total polyphenols by spectrophotometry using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, determination of antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl radical (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-di-[3-ethylbentiazoline sulphonated] (ATBS). In addition, spectrometric analysis of selected minerals and heavy metals was performed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). Results: The mushrooms analysed varied in terms of their bioactive constituents. They contained components with varying effects on human health, including fatty acids, oleamide, 1,2-dipalmitoylglycerol, (2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)-methyl ester of oleic acid, deoxyspergualin, 2-methylenocholestan-3-ol, hexadecanoamide, isoallochan, 2,6-diaminopurine, and adenine. All contained polyphenols and varying amounts of minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, copper, silicon and manganese) and exhibited antioxidant properties of varying potency. No exceedances of the permissible concentration of lead and cadmium were observed in any of them. Conclusions: All of the mushrooms studied can provide material for the extraction of various bioactive compounds with physiological effects. In addition, the presence of polyphenols and minerals, as well as antioxidant properties and the absence of exceeding the permissible concentration of heavy metals, indicate that these species could be interesting material in the design of foods with health-promoting properties, nutraceuticals or dietary supplements. This study aimed to develop a high-quality dry emulsion incorporating omega-3, 6, and 9 fatty acid-rich ostrich oil for use as a dietary supplement. Extracted from abdominal adipose tissues using a low-temperature wet rendering method, the ostrich oil exhibited antioxidant properties, favorable physicochemical properties, microbial counts, heavy metal levels, and fatty acid compositions, positioning it as a suitable candidate for an oil-in-water emulsion and subsequent formulation as a dry emulsion. Lecithin was employed as the emulsifier due to its safety and health benefits. The resulting emulsion, comprising 10% w/w lecithin and 10% w/w ostrich oil, was stable, with a droplet size of 3.93 ± 0.11 μm. This liquid emulsion underwent transformation into a dry emulsion to preserve the physicochemical stability of ostrich oil, utilizing Avicel® PH-101 or Aerosil® 200 through a granulation process. Although Aerosil® 200 exhibited superior adsorption, Avicel® PH-101 granules surpassed it in releasing the ostrich oil emulsion. Consequently, Avicel® PH-101 was selected as the preferred adsorbent for formulating the ostrich oil dry emulsion. The dry emulsion, encapsulated with a disintegration time of 3.11 ± 0.14 min for ease of swallowing, maintained microbial loads and heavy metal contents within acceptable limits. Presented as granules containing butylated hydroxytoluene, the dry emulsion showcased robust temperature stability, suggesting the potential incorporation of animal fat into dry emulsions as a promising dietary supplement. The study proposed the use of aspen wood sawdust and biochar derived from this sawdust for the removal of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI) ions from soil in systems containing single metals as well as a mixture of all the studied metals. The effectiveness of the applied sorbents was compared with the sorptive properties of activated carbon. The results showed that all the tested materials reduced the metal content in the soil, and the obtained biochar was able to sorb lead, cadmium, and chromium ions in both studied systems. The influence of the type of sorbent, its dose, process duration, and the impact of metal on the removal efficiency and sorption capacity was analyzed. A statistical analysis of the obtained results was also conducted, determining the influence of process parameters on the removal capabilities of metal ions. The highest Pb, Cd and Cr ion removal efficiencies were obtained in a 36-day process at a sorbent dose of 10%. Aspen sawdust, biochar and activated carbon removed 46%, 50% and 71% of Pb(II), 35%, 43% and 53% of Cd(II) and 15%, 27% and 38% of Cr(VI), respectively. In turn, the highest sorption capacity values were achieved in a 36-day process at a sorbent dose of 2%, obtaining results of 20.2 mg/g, 22.3 mg/g and 23.2 mg/g of Pb(II), 5.1 mg/g, 7.9 mg/g and 11.7 mg/g of Cd(II) and 3.8 mg/g, 5.8 mg/g and 8.5 mg/g of Cr(VI), respectively. It was found that both raw aspen wood sawdust and biochar derived from this wood are effective in removing toxic metal ions from soil, which presents a potential solution to their presence in the natural environment. The prolonged duration of phytoremediation poses a risk of heavy metal dispersal to the surrounding environment. This study investigated a combined remediation approach for cadmium (Cd)- and arsenic (As)-contaminated soil by integrating phytoremediation with stabilization techniques. Bidens pilosa was utilized as the phytoremediator, and steel slag, pyrolusite, and FeSO4 were employed as stabilizing agents in the pot experiments. Key metrics such as soil moisture content, root length, plant height, and heavy metal concentrations in Bidens pilosa were measured to evaluate the remediation efficacy. Additionally, the bioavailability, leaching toxicity, and chemical forms of Cd and As, along with other soil properties, were analyzed. The results indicated that the optimal restoration effect was achieved by combining steel slag, pyrolusite, and FeSO4 with stabilizers in a ratio of 2:1:10. Additionally, the optimal dosage of these materials was found to be 9% by weight. Mechanistic studies, including heavy metal speciation analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and microbial community diversity analysis, revealed that the stabilization effects were primarily due to the interactions of anionic and cationic ions, chelation by organic acids secreted by plant roots, and enhanced microbial activity. This study describes the prevalent sedimentological and geochemical patterns and investigates the environmental status of the bottom of Gialova lagoon, a highly vulnerable coastal site of the EU's Natura 2000 network. For this task, lithological, geochemical, and microfaunal analyses of sediment samples were combined with a high-resolution bathymetric survey. Potential pollution was determined using geochemical-based (EF, I-geo, and PLI) and faunal (Foram-AMBI) indices. We find that sedimentation is mainly controlled by the bottom morphology, hydrodynamic variations, and biogenic productivity of the lagoon. The application of the multivariate factor analysis technique revealed four dominant factors explaining the geochemical processes occurring in the lagoon. The first factor, namely "terrigenous aluminosilicates associated with Corg vs. autochthonous biogenic carbonates", discriminates the deposition of detrital sediments, related to the high adsorption of heavy metals—versus bioclastic sediments. The "sulfides" factor represents an anoxic phase of the lagoon floor, whereas the "Mn-oxyhydroxides" factor indicates increased manganese content with several compounded trace elements. The "phosphate" factor reveals multiple sources of phosphorus in the lagoon. The lagoon bottom shows negligible to minor contamination in heavy metals, except Mo and Pb, which induce moderate pollution levels. Acid mine drainage (AMD), containing large quantities of heavy metals and acidic components, poses a severe threat to the environment and human health. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) plays a crucial role in the treatment of AMD, but its activity is significantly influenced by environmental conditions. This study systematically analyzes the stress effect of high phosphorus concentration on A. ferrooxidans during AMD treatment and its biomineralization effect. The results indicate that with phosphorus concentrations ranging from 0 g/L to 2 g/L, the system's pH and Fe2+ oxidation rate initially decrease and then increase, with higher phosphorus concentrations delaying the time of increase. When the phosphorus concentration exceeds 2 g/L, both pH and Fe2+ oxidation rates generally show a downward trend. The morphology and elemental composition of the precipitates obtained under different phosphorus concentrations exhibit significant differences, indicating that phosphorus concentration notably affects the oxidation activity of A. ferrooxidans and its mediated biomineralization process. Under high phosphorus concentrations, the activity of A. ferrooxidans is inhibited, hindering the Fe2+ oxidation process and resulting in the formation of a large quantity of amorphous ferric phosphate precipitates. The findings provide a scientific basis for optimizing AMD treatment technologies, suggesting that reasonable control of phosphorus concentration in practical applications can improve AMD treatment efficiency and pretreatment effects. Homing pigeons are promising biomonitors of atmospheric metal pollution that may influence human health and environmental sustainability. However, exact interactions between respiratory and oral exposure and associations between atmospheric and pulmonary metal concentrations and effects are lacking. The current experiments measure differences in homing pigeon tissue cadmium, lead, and mercury concentrations due to diet and atmospheric exposure, and changes in pulmonary lesions associated with changing seasonal atmospheric metal concentrations. Forty 6-week-old homing pigeons were raised for 9 months in experiment 1, and seventy-five pigeons from different age groups were necropsied in winter, spring/summer, and autumn in experiment 2. Results indicate that atmospheric metal concentrations influence lung cadmium and lead concentrations, that atmospheric metal concentrations fluctuated seasonally and were greatest in fine particulate matter (PM2.1) during winter, and the rate of lung cadmium and lead accumulations reflected temporal changes. There were significant correlations between lung metal concentrations and alveolar macrophage lesions. Time (10 months) and higher metal concentrations (266 ng/g for Cd and 16,442 ng/g for Pb) are both important factors in the production of pulmonary dust cells. Our experiments indicate that homing pigeons can provide specific information on diseases resulting from atmospheric pollution exposure and that these data can assist in public health decisions and environmental regulations to promote sustainable development of the environment. Neutral and slightly alkaline arable soils from the vicinity of the former and the biggest metallurgical plant in southeastern Europe were analyzed for the status of the water soluble pool of heavy metals in 1–20% w/w biochar (BC)-amended contaminated soils. Heavy metal solubility was monitored over a 6-month period. The metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Ba) exhibited significant relationships between each other and exceeded the maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) in surface waters for domestic and drinking purposes. In most of the investigated sites and BC treatments, metal concentrations decreased with time due to the transfer to more resistant soil pools. Cation exchange capacity, exchangeable Ca and pH increased after BC application, while electrical conductivity decreased. BC amendment led to the prevalence of humic acids (HAs) over fulvic acids (FAs) and increased the fraction of refractory organic carbon. The share of metal–organic complexes increased for the metals Zn, Cd, Mn and Ba in the BC-amended soils, and the share of free Me2+ species decreased. This trend was especially pronounced in the soils with the lowest pH of 6.4–6.9. Sustainable potable groundwater supply is crucial for human development and the preservation of natural habitats. The largest endorheic inland lake in Kazakhstan, Balkhash Lake, is the main water resource for the arid southeastern part of the country. Several ore enrichment plants that are located along its shore have heavy metal pollution potential. The study area is located around a plant that has an evident anthropogenic impact on the Balkhash Lake aquatic ecological system, with ten known heavy metal toxic hotspots endangering fragile habitats, including some indigenous human communities. This study assessed the risk of heavy metal contamination from tailing dump operations, storage ponds, and related facilities and suggested management practices for preventing this risk. The coastal zone risk assessment analysis used an innovative integrated groundwater numerical flow and transport model that predicted the spread of groundwater contamination from tailing dump operations under several mitigation strategies. Heavy metal pollution prevention models included a no-action scenario, a filtration barrier construction scenario, and two scenarios involving the drilling of drainage wells between the pollution sources and the lake. The scenario assessment indicates that drilling ten drainage wells down to the bedrock between the existing drainage channel and the lake is the optimal engineering solution for confining pollution. Under these conditions, pollution from tailings will not reach Lake Balkhash during the forecast period. The methods and tools used in this study to enable mining activity without environmental implications for the region can be applied to sites with similar anthropogenic influences worldwide. This study investigated the distribution of heavy metals in agricultural soils in the vicinity of three large mining landfills of the Kizhnica mine in the Republic of Kosovo. The mining sector is one of the most important sectors of Kosovo's economic development, and the Kizhnica mine is one of the most important ore producers in Kosovo. Besides the positive aspects, the development of production also has some negative side effects, such as the generation of industrial waste and the possible contamination of surrounding areas, including agricultural land. Therefore, ten sampling sites were selected in the vicinity of the Kizhnica mine. These sites were characterized and assessed as the most important due to the anthropogenic impact of mineral processing and open-tailing waste deposits in Kizhnica. The concentration of Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Cd, Ni, Mn and Sb in the selected samples was determined using inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry. The data obtained were used to create geochemical maps and calculate the contamination factor, pollution load index and geoaccumulation index. Cluster analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient and air spatial distribution patterns using the air dispersion model were used to evaluate within the area. The results showed that heavy metal levels are influenced by the anthropogenic nature of pollution, confirming a current ecological threat from mining activities in the region. In order to improve waste management, reduce the hazardous impacts of mining and contribute to the sustainable development of the region, the potential reuse of the deposited waste material in the construction industry is proposed. Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) are reliable, portable, affordable, and versatile electrochemical platforms for the real-time analytical monitoring of emerging analytes in the environmental, clinical, and agricultural fields. The aim of this study was to evaluate the electrochemical behavior of gold screen-printed electrodes (SPGEs) modified with molecules containing amino (Tr-N) or α-aminophosphonate (Tr-P) groups for the selective and sensitive detection of the toxic metal ions Pb2+ and Hg2+ in aqueous samples. After optimizing the analytical parameters (conditioning potential and time, deposition potential and time, pH and concentration of the supporting electrolyte), anodic square wave stripping voltammetry (SWASV) was used to evaluate and compare the electrochemical performance of bare or modified electrodes for the detection of Hg2+ and Pb2+, either alone or in their mixtures in the concentration range between 1 nM and 10 nM. A significative improvement in the detection ability of Pb2+ ions was recorded for the amino-functionalized gold sensor SPGE-N, while the presence of a phosphonate moiety in SPGE-P led to greater sensitivity towards Hg2+ ions. The developed sensors allow the detection of Pb2+ and Hg2+ with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.41 nM and 35 pM, respectively, below the legal limits for these heavy metal ions in drinking water or food, while the sensitivity was 5.84 µA nM−1cm−2 and 10 µA nM−1cm−2, respectively, for Pb2+ and Hg2+. The reported results are promising for the development of advanced devices for the in situ and cost-effective monitoring of heavy metals, even in trace amounts, in water resources. Exogenous application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) has previously been reported to trigger plant tolerance against a variety of environmental stresses. The present study was planned to investigate the possible role/s of exogenously applied SNP (50 or 100 μM) in alleviating cadmium (Cd)-induced effects on physio-biochemical processes, yield attributes, and grain quality traits of three fragrant rice cultivars, viz., Meixiangzhan-2 (MXZ), Guixiangzhan (GXZ), and Xiangyaxiangzhan (XYXZ) under 50 mg Cd kg−1 of soil. The results revealed that foliar spray of SNP (50 or 100 μM) on Cd-stressed rice plants reduced oxidative stress (lower hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA), and electrolyte leakage (EL)) and improved the photosynthetic apparatus through higher chlorophyll contents, gas exchange attributes, and intact chloroplast configurations, and reduced Cd concentration in the leaves and grains of aromatic rice cultivars. The reduced levels of cellular ROS, MDA, and EL were related to the endogenous NO-mediated improvement in the activity of anti-oxidative enzymes and those involved during the ascorbate–glutathione cycle. However, among the different SNP levels, the foliar spraying of 50 μM of SNP was recorded to be the best treatment for fragrant rice growth, which increased grain yield by 42.06%, 46.03%, and 31.21%, and the quality trait of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) content by 43.12%, 55.84%, and 35.72% in MXZ, GXZ, and XYXZ respectively, suggesting that GXZ is more responsive to SNP than MXZ and XYXZ fragrant rice cultivars. Collectively, our results deduced that cultivating the GXZ fragrant rice cultivar along with foliar application of 50 μM of SNP could sustain the grain yield and quality features of aromatic rice cultivation in heavy metal (especially Cd)-polluted soils. Concern over the harmful impacts of heavy metal pollution in soil has increased dramatically on a global scale. For the sake of environmental preservation, accurate estimates of the heavy metal concentrations in soil are essential. This study provides valuable data regarding heavy metal concentrations in soil collected from field crops production area in Central and Western Serbia. Five wider localities in the zones of Central and Western Serbia were selected for the collection of soil samples. Based on our research, focused on determining the total contents of heavy metals in the soil and the degree of pollution in the environment caused by their behavior, distribution, and origin, it can be concluded that there is pronounced variability in relation to localities. Heavy metal contents were mostly within the same ranges as those in similar soils from Europe and around the world. Any pollution control system must include heavy metal monitoring, including the methodical collection of data on the concentrations of heavy metals in a particular environment. Human activities, such as mining, industrialization, industrial waste emissions, and agricultural practices, have caused heavy metals to become widespread and excessively accumulated in soil. The high concentrations of heavy metals in soil can be toxic to plants, severely affecting crop yield and quality. Moreover, these heavy metals can also enter the food chain, affecting animals and humans and leading to various serious illnesses. Selenium (Se) is not only an essential element for animals and humans but is also beneficial for plants, as it promotes their ability to respond actively to biotic and abiotic stresses. The global issue of Se deficiency in diets has made plants the primary source for human Se supplementation. This paper comprehensively reviews the effects of heavy metal stress on plant growth and development, physiological responses of plants to such stress, and the intracellular transport processes of heavy metals within plants. It particularly focuses on the mechanisms by which Se alleviates heavy metal stress in plants. Additionally, the study delves into how Se significantly enhances plant tolerance mechanisms against typical heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and mercury (Hg). This integrative research not only expands the boundaries of research in the field of plant heavy metal stress and Se application but also provides new perspectives and solutions for understanding and addressing complex environmental heavy metal pollution issues. Mining and industrial operations are often associated with metalloid and heavy metal contamination of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Heavy metals can weaken the soil's purification ability to remediate and can accumulate in the human body through crops grown in contaminated soil. In this study, a stabilization method was applied for the remediation of arsenic (As) and heavy metal (Pb and Zn) contaminated soil. Scallop shells (SLS) and starfish (Asterias amurensis, ASF), commonly regarded as waste resource materials, are selected as stabilizers. Proper recycling/reuse measures are required to limit uncontrolled disposal of SLS and ASF, prevent environmental degradation of coastal areas, and take advantage of their high calcium carbonate contents. The stabilizers were processed through −#10 mesh (0.2 mm) and −#20 mesh (0.85 mm) sieves. In addition, calcined stabilizers were produced by calcining SLS and ASF at 900 °C to compare stabilization efficiency based on the presence/absence of high-temperature heat treatment. Each of the three types of processed stabilizers was added to contaminated soil at 2 to 10 wt.%, and the mixtures were subjected to wet curing for 28 days. Extraction with 0.1 N HCl was applied for stabilization efficiency assessment. Crops were cultivated in the stabilized soil to evaluate As and heavy metal immobilization capacity. Analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) established that calcite (CaCO3) was observed in the natural materials and quicklime (CaO) in the calcined materials. The stabilization efficiency assessment results showed that treatment with SLS and ASF effectively reduced the elution of Pb and Zn. SLS was effective in immobilizing As, but the application of natural ASF increased the leachability of As due to the presence of organic matter. However, applying calcined ASF effectively immobilized As because the organic matter was removed at high temperatures. When the transition of As and heavy metals to crops was evaluated, Pb concentrations that exceeded the criterion for leafy vegetables were detected in the lettuce grown in contaminated soil. However, Pb was not detected in the lettuce grown in SLS- and ASF-treated soil, confirming the stability of heavy metal immobilization. Scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis showed that the pozzolanic reaction is related to heavy metal immobilization, and Ca–As precipitation is related to the immobilization of As. This study investigated the effects of nano zero-valent iron-modified biochar (nZVI@BC) as a soil amendment on potted rice growth, soil properties, and heavy metal dynamics. Seven treatments with varying amounts of soil conditioner, biochar, and nZVI@BC were applied to potted rice. Results showed that nZVI@BC application significantly improved rice agronomic traits, with the 15 g·kg−1 treatment increasing the panicle formation rate by 15% and 100-grain weight by 8% compared to the control. Soil fertility was enhanced, with available phosphorus increasing from 137 to 281 mg·kg−1 in the most effective treatment. Heavy metal analysis revealed that nZVI@BC application did not increase soil heavy metal content, with Cd levels remaining below 0.3 mg·kg−1 across treatments. Notably, the 10 g·kg−1 nZVI@BC treatment showed potential for slight Cd immobilization, reducing its concentration from 0.32 to 0.26 mg·kg−1. Microbial community analysis showed that nZVI@BC altered soil microbial diversity and composition, with the 10 g·kg−1 treatment resulting in the highest fungal diversity (Chao1 index: 294.219). The relative abundance of the beneficial fungal class Agaricomycetes increased from 40% to 55% with optimal nZVI@BC application. These findings suggest that nZVI@BC has potential as an effective soil amendment for improving rice cultivation while maintaining soil health, microbial diversity, and potentially mitigating heavy metal contamination. This study evaluates the impact of multi-year protection of grapevines using copper-based pesticides on heavy metal content in soil, leaves, and fruit under organic and conventional cultivation methods. Conducted on Solaris, Hibernal, and Muscaris grapevine varieties in north-western Poland, the research highlights significant differences between the two cultivation approaches. In organic vineyards, copper content in soil averaged 10.25 mg/kg, significantly higher than the 9.05 mg/kg found in conventional soils. Manganese levels were also elevated in organic soils (223 mg/kg) compared to conventional ones (299 mg/kg). Conversely, conventional vineyards exhibited higher zinc and lead concentrations, averaging 47.10 mg/kg and 20.34 mg/kg, respectively, versus 43.50 mg/kg and 11.22 mg/kg in organic soils. The organic soils also had higher salinity (46.50 mg/kg) than conventional ones (30.50 mg/kg). The fruits of grapevines in organic cultivation showed higher copper and zinc levels, with the Solaris variety containing 15.01 mg/kg of copper and the Muscaris variety having 11.43 mg/kg of zinc. These levels exceed the commonly encountered ranges of <1 to 10 mg/kg. Lead content in fruits was higher in organic cultivation (2.19 mg/kg) than in conventional cultivation (1.18 mg/kg), occasionally surpassing the critical value for consumable plants (1 mg/kg). Leaves of grapevines from organic vineyards had significantly higher copper and manganese content than those from conventional vineyards, with the Hibernal variety showing the highest levels. The intensive use, development, and expansion of the road network is expanding the zones of direct impact of road transport on forest ecosystems. Issues related to the mobility of trace elements in forest ecosystems along motorways are very important due to the numerous environmental risks associated with the excessive accumulation of metals, the ability to migrate and accumulate in plants and animals, and the risk of transferring these elements to higher trophic levels. The aim of this article was therefore to determine the impact of road traffic on the basis of contents of trace metals Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn and to describe the relationship of these contents in moss gametophytes and blueberry leaves taken in the vicinity of an existing and variously expanded expressway (S7, Poland, Europe). Analyses of transport impacts included the effects of distance and time of pollutant deposition and road transport on habitat and stand conditions. The highest contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn in moss tissues were found in fir stands and the contents were, respectively, 0.36 mg·kg−1, 5.91 mg·kg−1, 12.5 mg·kg−1, 3.26 mg·kg−1, 8.82 mg·kg−1, and 55.28 mg·kg−1. Mosses showed the best bioindication capacity of all of the studied ecosystem elements. The Pb, Zn, Cr, Cu, and Ni contents were particularly markedly elevated in moss tissues relative to non-anthropopressured areas and dependent on distance from the emitter (road). Blueberry proved to be a less useful bioindicator, as the contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn found were similar to the data from non-anthropopressured areas and were, respectively, 0.09 mg·kg−1, 0.98 mg·kg−1, 7.12 mg·kg−1, 2.49 mg·kg−1, 1.18 mg·kg−1, and 15.91 mg·kg−1 in fir stands and 0.04 mg·kg−1, 0.47 mg·kg−1, 6.63 mg·kg−1, 1.65 mg·kg−1, 0.72 mg·kg−1, and 17.44 mg·kg−1 in pine stands. An analysis was conducted on the influence of advancements in smelting technology at the copper smelter in Bor, Serbia, and seasonal changes on the level and chemical composition of PM10 inside and outside a classroom at the Technical Faculty in Bor in 2015 and 2019. The results of chemical analyses revealed that the average level of arsenic in PM10 within the classroom reached 11.9 ng/m3, nearly double the annual target value. In comparison, the average level of arsenic (As) in PM10 in ambient air stood at 15 ng/m3. A notable enrichment factor was observed for elements present in copper concentrates (Se > Ag > Bi > Pb > Cd > As > Sb > S > Cu > Sn > Zn) in both the classroom and outdoor air, underscoring their predominantly anthropogenic origin. Higher concentrations of As in PM10 were recorded during the non-heating season and the operation of the copper smelter with outdated smelting technology (2015). These findings hold significant implications for health protection for all citizens in the investigated area surrounding the Technical Faculty in Bor. The study highlights the need for additional measures to reduce As content in PM10 in ambient air and prevent the infiltration of suspended particles from outdoor air into classrooms. Evidence suggests that pollutants like particulate matter and heavy metals significantly impact health. This study investigated the determinants and sources of indoor PM2.5 heavy metals and assessed the health risk to children in Durban. Thirty households of mothers participating in the mother and child in the environment (MACE) birth cohort study were assessed for PM2.5 heavy metals. Multivariate linear regression was used to identify the determinants of PM2.5 heavy metals, while Pearson correlation and principal component analysis identified their sources. The health risk for children was assessed using measured metal concentrations. Proximity to industry, wall type, house age, and presence of windows increased some PM2.5 heavy metals, while cross ventilation reduced indoor PM2.5 As and Cu levels. Pearson correlation and principal component analysis indicated household, traffic, industrial, and natural sources as potential contributors. The health index was greater than 1, and cancer risk values for PM2.5 As and Pb exceeded acceptable levels. The findings highlight the toxicity of indoor air due to heavy metals and the potential for adverse health outcomes in children. The energy sector is the sector that generates the highest amount of environmental contamination, especially in water sources, mostly in the case of coal-based energy production. The aim of this study was to examine a significant contamination source, heavy metal contamination, in coal mining effluents. The current investigation introduces an MOF platform based on zirconium clusters and isophthalic acid with NH2-MIP-SO3H mixed amine and sulfonic acid functional groups in order to remove the most common heavy metal ions in coal mining effluents, including Hg, Cd, Pb, and Cu ions. The water matrix and the operational conditions were identified to be very influential in the removal process, such as the pH of water, the initial metal concentration and operating time. NH2-MIP-SO3H offers a great removal efficiency of metals starting from 745.83 mg/g for Cd, 673.67 mg/g for Cu, 589.85 mg/g for Hg, and 481.66 mg/g for Pb ions, with the Langmuir equation for equilibrium and pseudo-second-order equation for kinetics being the ideal models to express the equilibrium and kinetic data, respectively. A significant impact of water pH was found to occur, with the NH2-MIP-SO3H platform performing best at pH 6. Reuse of NH2-MIP-SO3H demonstrates excellent reusability, sustaining 90% of initial performance over eight regeneration cycles. The interaction of functional group-functional metal was the dominant mechanism in the removal process. Diatomite, a natural adsorbent rich in active silica, serves as a valuable precursor for geopolymer synthesis. The safe disposal of diatomite as a failed lead (Pb(II)) adsorbent is critical to prevent secondary contamination. This study investigated the immobilisation efficiency of geopolymerisation for Pb(II)-rich diatomite sludge. Low-grade diatomite with high ignition loss was utilised in the synthesis of alkali-activated geopolymers. It was demonstrated that the geopolymers achieved a compressive strength of 28.3 MPa with a 50% replacement rate of metakaolin by diatomite sludge, which was not a compromise in strength compared to that of the geopolymer with no Pb(II) (26.2 MPa). The leaching behaviour of Pb(II) was evaluated using water and acetic acid, yielding concentrations below 3 mg/L and immobilisation efficiencies of 95% in both scenarios. Analytical techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) elucidated the mineral composition and chemical environment of the geopolymers. These analyses revealed that Pb(II) migrated from diatomite pores, potentially forming soluble hydroxides under sufficient hydroxide, which then participated in condensation with silicon and aluminium monomers, effectively immobilising Pb(II) within amorphous aluminosilicate gels. Furthermore, the formation of the amorphous gels within diatomite pores hindered Pb(II) leaching, encapsulating Pb(II) effectively. This study presents a novel approach to immobilising heavy metals within building materials, enhancing mineral resource utilisation efficiency while addressing environmental contamination concerns. Contaminated sediments may induce long-term risks to humans and ecosystems due to the accumulation of priority and emerging inorganic and organic pollutants having toxic and bio-accumulation properties that could become a secondary pollution source. This study focused on the screening of novel bio-based materials to be used in the decontamination of marine sediments considering technical and environmental criteria. It aimed to compare the environmental impacts of cellulose-based adsorbents produced at lab scale by using different syntheses protocols that involved cellulose functionalization by oxidation and branching, followed by structuring of an aerogel-like material via Soxhlet extraction and freeze-drying or their combination. As model pollutants, we used 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, 4-nitrophenol, methylene blue, and two heavy metals, i.e., cadmium and chromium. When comparing the three materials obtained by only employing the Soxhlet extractor with different solvents (without freeze-dying), it was observed that the material obtained with methanol did not have a good structure and was rigid and more compact than the others. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted to evaluate the environmental performance of the novel materials. Apart from the hierarchical categorization of the materials based on their technical and environmental performance in eliminating organic pollutants and heavy metal ions, it was demonstrated that the cellulose-based material obtained via Soxhlet extraction with ethanol was a better choice, since it had lower environmental impacts and highest adsorption capacity for the model pollutants. LCA is a useful tool to optimize the sustainability of sorbent materials alongside lab-scale experiments and confirms that the right direction to produce new performant and sustainable adsorbent materials involves not only choosing wastes as starting materials, but also optimizing the consumption of electricity used for the production processes. The main results also highlight the need for precise data in LCA studies based on lab-scale processes and the potential for small-scale optimization to reduce the environmental impacts. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are members of a protein superfamily with diverse physiological functions, including cellular detoxification and protection against oxidative damage. However, there is limited research on GSTs responding to cadmium (Cd) stress. This study classified 46 GST genes in Dendrobium officinale (D. officinale) into nine groups using model construction and domain annotation. Evolutionary analysis revealed nine subfamilies with diverse physical and chemical properties. Prediction of subcellular localization revealed that half of the GST members were located in the cytoplasm. According to the expression analysis of GST family genes responding to Cd stress, DoGST5 responded significantly to Cd stress. Transient expression of DoGST5-GFP in tobacco leaves revealed that DoGST5 was localized in the cytoplasm. DoGST5 overexpression in Arabidopsis enhanced Cd tolerance by reducing Cd-induced H2O2 and O2− levels. These findings demonstrate that DoGST5 plays a critical role in enhancing Cd tolerance by balancing reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, offering potential applications for improving plant adaptability to heavy metal stress. Pollution of arable land with heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal that poses a severe threat to humans' and animals' health and lives. Plants can easily absorb Cd from the soil, and plant-based food is the main means of exposure to this hazardous element for humans and animals. Phytoremediation is a promising plant-based approach to removing heavy metals from the soil, and plant growth-promoting micro-organisms such as the fungi Trichoderma can enhance the ability of plants to accumulate metals. Inoculation of Avena sativa L. (oat) with Trichoderma viride enhances germination and seedling growth in the presence of Cd and, in this study, the growth of 6-month-old oat plants in Cd-contaminated soil was not increased by inoculation with T. viride, but a 1.7-fold increase in yield was observed. The content of Cd in oat shoots depended on the Cd content in the soil. Still, it was unaffected by the inoculation with T. viride. A. sativa metallothioneins (AsMTs) participate in plant–fungi interaction, however, their role in this study depended on MT type and Cd concentration. The inoculation of A. sativa with T. viride could be a promising approach to obtaining a high yield in Cd-contaminated soil without increasing the Cd content in the plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
