In a hydropower-dominated power grid, the primary frequency regulation (PFR) capability of hydropower units is typically compromised to suppress ultra-low frequency oscillations (ULFOs). However, as renewable wind power is further integrated, a practicable solution to damp ULFOs has emerged, which is to adjust the frequency control parameters of wind turbine (WT) units. Driven by the goals of overall damping enhancement and ULFO suppression, this paper first establishes an extended unified frequency model (EUFM) of a hydro–wind power sending system. Based on EUFM, the damping torque of the hydro–wind power sending system is derived, and the specific impact of WT control parameters on ULFOs and PFR characteristics is investigated. Then, a novel optimization objective function considering damping in the ultra-low frequency band and PFR is formulated and solved using an intelligence algorithm. By optimizing the parameters of the WT to suppress ULFOs, the PFR capability of hydropower units can be released. Finally, simulation results verify that the optimized WT parameters can simultaneously address the ULFO problem and guarantee PFR performance, thereby enhancing the frequency dynamic stability of the sending system. Renewable energy mini-grids are considered a cost-effective way to provide electricity for a large proportion of the population in developing countries who do not have access to it. Compared with standalone home systems and national grid systems, mini-grids can potentially offer a better service. They can be deployed faster, making them essential for sustainable development, especially in rural and semi-urban areas of developing countries. However, mini-grids often face challenges regarding their resilience, and many fail to survive beyond their pilot phases. This paper aims to identify the factors contributing to the success of mini-grids and to identify common themes that can help existing and future mini-grid developments become more resilient and influence policy decision making. To achieve this goal, we developed a database of the status of mini-grids in Malawi, with the energy generation resource(s) of their installed capacity, enabling factors, and challenges. We undertook a more detailed investigation of two hydro mini-grid systems—Bondo and Chipopoma. We collected qualitative and quantitative data through literature reviews, site visits, interviews, and observations. The study identified 19 mini-grids with a combined installed capacity of 26 MW. Of these, seven had been abandoned, and one was under development. Several factors that affect successful mini-grid efficacy in Malawi were identified, including financial resourcefulness, technical resourcefulness, policies and regulations, community engagement and capacity building, cross-sector linkages, and institutional organisational frameworks. Hydropower plants (HPPs) create barriers across rivers and fragment aquatic ecosystems, river reaches and habitats. The reservoirs they create slow the flowing water and convert the riverine into lacustrine ecosystems. The barriers created by HPPs interrupt the seasonal migrations of many fish species, while the reservoirs drive away fish species that are dependent on flowing water habitats. This paper assesses the distribution of fish species in the 3S rivers—Sekong, Sesan and Sre Pok, in Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam—using IUCN Red List-assessed species distribution by HydroBasin Level 8 from the freshwater reports of the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) and their connectivity with the Mekong. There are currently 61 commissioned dams in the 3S basins and a further 2 under construction, 23 of which are larger than the 30 MW installed capacity. A further 24 HPPs are proposed or planned in these basins. The changes in connectivity caused by the dams are measured by adapting the River Class Connectivity Index (RCICLASS); the original connectivity of the 3S basin taking into account the two major waterfalls in the Sesan and Sre Pok rivers was estimated at 80.9%. With existing dams, the connectivity has been reduced to 23.5%, and with all planned dams, it is reduced further to 10.9%. The resulting re-distribution of fish species occurring throughout the 3S basins is explored, by focusing on migratory guilds and threatened and endemic fish species. With all dams built, it is predicted that the total numbers of species in HydroBasins above the dams will be reduced by 40–50%. The Threatened Species Index is estimated to fall from over 30 near the confluence of the three rivers to less than 10 above the lowest dams on the 3S rivers. The economy of South Asia is experiencing growth, yet it faces constraints due to heavy reliance on fossil fuels and frequent power outages. Access to diverse energy sources, particularly electricity, is crucial for sustaining this growth. One feasible solution involves neighbouring countries engaging in the trade of renewable electrical energy. Hydropower stands as one of the many energy sources available in South Asia. However, sectorial constraints pose significant challenges to energy trade initiatives. This study utilises the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate Nepal's readiness and identify obstacles to its cross-border energy trade with India and Bangladesh. A comprehensive analysis of these obstacles is imperative for formulating effective strategies and policies. Additionally, this study offers recommendations for enhancing preparedness and resolving issues related to energy trading, which may apply to similar cross-border situations. This study ranks energy trading obstacles with neighbouring nations using the AHP, offering key insights for stakeholders and policymakers. Using a non-probabilistic purposeful sampling technique, 25 expert respondents from the energy sector and prominent academicians were selected as part of the data collection procedure. The economic operation of hydropower stations has the potential to increase water use efficiency. However, there are some challenges, such as the fixed and unchangeable flow characteristic curve of the hydraulic turbines, and the large number of variables in optimal load distribution, which limit the progress of research. In this paper, we propose a new optimal method of the economic operation of hydropower stations based on improved Long Short-Term Memory neural network (I-LSTM) and Random Forest (RF) algorithm. Firstly, in order to accurately estimate the water consumption, the LSTM model's hyperparameters are optimized using improved particle swarm optimization, and the I-LSTM method is proposed to fit the flow characteristic curve of the hydraulic turbines. Secondly, the Random Forest machine learning algorithm is introduced to establish a load-distribution model with its powerful feature extraction and learning ability. To improve the accuracy of the load-distribution model, we use the K-means algorithm to cluster the historical data and optimize the parameters of the Random Forest model. A Hydropower Station in China is selected for a case study. It is shown that (1) the I-LSTM method fits the operating characteristics under various working conditions and actual operating characteristics of hydraulic turbines, ensuring that they are closest to the actual operating state; (2) the I-LSTM method is compared with Support Vector Machine (SVM), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and Long Short-Term Memory neural network (LSTM). The prediction results of SVM have a large error, but compared with ELM and LSTM, MSE is reduced by about 46% and 38% respectively. MAE is reduced by about 25% and 21%, respectively. RMSE is reduced by about 27% and 24%, respectively; (3) the RF algorithm performs better than the traditional dynamic programming algorithm in load distribution. With the passage of time and the increase in training samples, the prediction accuracy of the Random Forest model has steadily improved, which helps to achieve optimal operation of the units, reducing their average total water consumption by 1.24%. This study provides strong support for the application of intelligent low-consumption optimization strategies in hydropower fields, which can bring higher economic benefits and resource savings to renewable energy production. Tajikistan holds the eighth position globally in terms of hydropower potential, estimated at 527 terawatt-hours (TWh), with a technically exploitable capacity of 317 TWh. Only 4–6 percent of this immense potential is currently utilized. In this paper, employing a combination of the Johansen cointegration test, vector autoregression, and the Granger-causality test on annual data from 1993 to 2021, we examine the causality relationship between electricity production and key macroeconomic variables, including gross domestic product (GDP), GDP per capita, exports, imports, final consumption, capital investment, and employment, in Tajikistan. The empirical findings reveal a positive unidirectional causality from electricity production to exports and imports. A positive bidirectional or feedback causality is found between electricity production and variables such as GDP, GDP per capita, final consumption, and employment. No causality relationship between electricity production and variables such as trade openness and capital investment is observed. The exploration of complex causal relationships between electricity production and key macroeconomic variables in Tajikistan, as revealed in this study, offers a modest yet meaningful addition to academic discourse. It presents insights that may inform policymakers and stakeholders, albeit with a recognition of the limitations inherent in the findings. These insights could potentially guide the formulation of sustainable development strategies and shed light on the underutilized potential of the country's hydropower resources. In this work, an experimental analysis of the performance of a cross-flow turbine, commonly referred to as a Michell–Banki turbine (MBT), is carried out for small-scale hydropower production in rural areas located in developing countries to support their social and economic development activities. The study investigates how the efficiency of the MBT is influenced by the presence or absence of a nozzle, along with variations in the internal guide vane (GV) and its angle. The runner had 26 blades that were arranged symmetrically in the periphery between two circular plates. The designed MBT had the ability to generate a maximum of 100 W of power at a water flow rate and a head of 0.009 m3/s and 0.6311 m, respectively. The experimental tests were carried out using a hydraulic bench. The turbine efficiency without the inner GV was found to be higher than that of the turbine with the inner GV; i.e., it was found that the utilization of the GV did not enhance the efficiency of the MBT due to the occurrence of a choking effect. A maximum hydraulic efficiency of 85% was achieved in the turbine without an inner GV in comparison with the efficiency achieved (77%) with this device and an optimum opening angle of the GV of 24° (75% of opening). In this regard, the GV design should be carefully carried out to improve the MBT efficiency. Climate change is expected to significantly affect countries in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, causing higher-than-average temperature increases, considerable reductions in rainfall and water runoff, and extreme events such as heatwaves. These pose severe threats to local energy systems, requiring a reliable and quantitative risk analysis. A methodological approach is thus proposed which covers both energy supply and demand, utilizing the latest climate projections under different greenhouse gas emissions scenarios and an appropriate scale for each energy form. For energy supply technologies, risks are assessed through statistical regression models and/or mathematical equations correlating climatic parameters with energy productivity. To analyze climate risks for energy demand, bottom–up models were developed, integrating both behavioral and policy aspects which are often considered in a very limited way. The results show that climate change will mainly affect electricity generation from hydroelectric and thermal power plants, with variations depending on the plants' locations and uncertainties associated with precipitation and runoff changes. The climate risks for solar and wind energy were found to be low. Energy consumption will also be affected, but the range of risks depends on the ambition and the effectiveness of measures for upgrading the thermal performance of buildings and the intensity of climate change. Although the movement of people from rural to urban areas has caused the increased use of energy, the abundance of water resources can be made into a form of renewable energy known as hydroelectricity. As European countries are ranked as the first users and exporters of hydropower, the production of renewable energy in developed countries such as the Nordic region has caused great impacts on economic growth and human development. The importance of this paper is to investigate the relationship between hydroelectricity and the Human Development Index by depending on some variables such as urbanization, rule of law, corruption, trade openness, and GDP per capita from 2002 to 2021 in Nordic countries. The results were estimated depending on impulse response function after conducting the Vector autoregressive model (VAR) model and Granger causality test. Results showed a negative impact from hydro plants in the short run but a significant positive impact in the long run in Nordic countries. The long-term sustainment of Human Development Index (HDI) is due to policies limiting the immigration of labor as well as protection of energy use. Knowledge of the compatibility of various types of renewable energy infrastructure (REI) with tourism can help avoid conflicts between the energy and tourism sectors and facilitate the energy transition. This study aims to investigate the attitudes of tourism service providers operating in Iceland towards three types of REI—wind, hydro, and geothermal power plants—and identify the factors that shape their perceptions regarding the compatibility between REI and tourism. Mixed research methods were employed to achieve that, which included an online questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews. The study revealed that tourism service providers were the most positive towards geothermal power plants, followed by hydropower plants, and the most negative towards wind farms. The identified factors that shape their perceptions regarding REI's compatibility with tourism included landscape and environmental impacts of REI, impacts on tourist attractions, potential of REI as a tourist attraction, perceived reversibility, and the image of REI. These factors help to identify locations where each type of REI is likely to be the most compatible with tourism. Water system management models represent different purposes, such as water supply, flood control, recreation, and hydropower. When building large-scale system models to represent these diverse objectives, their most appropriate time steps for each purpose often do not coincide. A monthly time step is usually sufficient for water supply modeling, but it can be too coarse for flood control, hydropower, and energy operations, where hourly time steps are preferred. Large-scale water management and planning models mostly employ monthly time steps, but using monthly average energy prices underestimates hydropower revenue and overestimates pumping energy cost because these plants tend to operate during times with above- or below-average energy prices within any month. The approach developed here uses hourly varying prices depending on the percent of monthly operating hours. This paper examines an approach that approximately incorporates hourly energy price variations for hydropower and pumping into large-scale monthly time-step water system model operations without affecting water delivery results. Results from including hourly varying energy prices in a large-scale monthly water supply model of California (CALVIN) are presented. CALVIN is a hydroeconomic linear programming optimization model that allocates water to agricultural and urban users with an objective to minimize total scarcity costs, operating costs, and hydropower revenue loss. Thirteen hydropower plants are modeled with hourly varying prices, and their revenue increased by 25 to 58% compared to revenue calculated with monthly average constant energy prices. Hydropower revenue improvements are greater in critically dry years. For pumping plants modeled with hourly varying prices, the energy use cost decreased by 10 to 59%. Despite the reliability and flexibility of hydropower, the operation of hydroelectric power plants may have significant impacts on the downstream river system, including its water stage, sediment transport, and water temperature, ultimately affecting the ecology. To address these challenges, there is a need to identify water scheduling patterns that improve both hydropower economics and the environment relative to current operations. This paper presents a new methodology to explore promising operational criteria/rules that can achieve such improvements. Typical environmental impact statements and relicensing processes generally perform detailed site-specific analyses of a few alternatives that focus on reservoir water release operating rules and their associated environmental impacts. In contrast, the methodology presented in this article uses a widely applicable approach that explores a much larger solution space. This large set of potential alternatives can be represented in a multidimensional space for which one axis represents the economic value and the other axis quantify individual environmental impacts (e.g., sediment transport and fish growth), and they are explored via two approaches: a Monte Carlo simulation that identifies "win–win" alternatives and a multi-objective optimization problem that identifies Pareto-optimal alternatives. In 2015, a 45 MW vertical hydropower machine exhibited excessive vibration after refurbishment. Measurements revealed a substantial bearing clearance at the lower generator guide bearing. Consequently, the bearing was unable to generate sufficient opposing force to drive the rotor toward the bearing center, resulting in more pronounced overall system vibration. Addressing this challenge required a cost-effective and feasible solution for mitigating the vibration problem. To this end, a design modification was implemented wherein the lower generator guide bearing (originally a sleeve bearing) was modified to a four-lobe bearing by offsetting the two halves of the bearing twice in two axes. Numerical simulations and experimentations were conducted, and the dynamics of the machine before and after the design modification were investigated. Both the simulation and experimental results showed that the machine with the four-lobe bearing improved the system stability and reduced the vibration amplitudes. The numerical simulation result demonstrated that, due to the design modification, the first and second critical speeds were effectively eliminated for a speed range of up to three times the nominal speed. Furthermore, for nominal operation with unbalanced magnetic pull, the four-lobe bearing provided a stability advantage in terms of the modal parameters relative to the original sleeve bearing. Alkaline electrolysis systems are currently considered to be suitable for large-scale hydrogen production. Previous research has primarily focused on integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into water electrolysis systems. However, intermittent issues stemming from the sporadic nature of renewable energy sources have led to the introduction of energy storage systems (ESSs) to address these intermittent challenges. Extensive research has been conducted on the efficiency and operational aspects of these systems. In contrast to other renewable energy sources, hydropower offers the advantages of stable output and high utilization, making it a promising solution for overcoming intermittent issues. In this study, we propose the design of an optimized alkaline electrolysis system tailored for small-scale hydropower generation. This approach allowed us to confirm the efficiency of a small-scale hydropower-based hydrogen production facility and the analysis of hydrogen production costs under diverse scenarios. Notably, the optimal selling price per kilogram of hydrogen was determined to be USD 15.6 when the operational time exceeded 20 h, albeit indicating a challenging market supply. Under the consideration of various scenarios and government subsidies, this study revealed that a USD 10/kgH2 subsidy or 24 h of continuous operation achieved break-even points in the sixth and eighth years, respectively. Ultimately, the findings underscore the necessity for essential measures, including government backing and technological advancements in small-scale hydropower facilities, to enhance the economic viability of the green hydrogen market in South Korea. Hydropower can have significant impacts on riverine ecosystems due to hydropeaking (i.e., artificial rapid and short-term fluctuations in water flow and water levels downstream and upstream of hydropower stations) that negatively affect downstream fish. However, when it comes to analyzing species habitat use and availability above and below small hydropower plants (SHPPs), studies conducted at the microhabitat scale are scarcer, particularly in Mediterranean rivers. The goal of this study is to assess the seasonal (early and late summer) and size-related (juveniles and adults) microhabitat use by native fish above and below SHPPs. Fish were sampled by a modified point electrofishing procedure, and a multivariate approach was used to analyze microhabitat use and availability data from sites located upstream (reference) and downstream (disturbed) from two SHPPs in northeast Portugal. Cover and water depth were the most influential variables in the use of microhabitat for all species at both the reference and disturbed sites, although some differences in the variable rankings were found. Leuciscids exhibited similar patterns of non-random (i.e., selective) microhabitat use between the reference and the disturbed sites. Overall, the seasonal and size-related patterns in species microhabitat use were similar, with the majority of species displaying seasonal patterns in microhabitat use from early summer to late summer. This study showed that differences in fish microhabitat use between downstream SHPP and upstream reference sites were negligible. Cover might have had a significant role in tempering the effects of detrimental environmental conditions, namely, peaking flows, by providing hydraulic shelter, highlighting the need to maintain riparian vegetation strips and mosaics of submerged aquatic macrophytes, as well as the provision of coarse substrata that can be critical for fish. To make clear the influence of renewable energy on ultra-low-frequency oscillation (ULFO) in a hydro-dominant system via an high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, this paper studies the damping characteristics when wind power is integrated into the sending power system. The damping torque method is applied for the mechanism study and risk evaluation of ULFO. The study of the inner cause and outer performance proves that ULFO belongs to frequency oscillation rather than conventional power oscillation. According to the theoretical analysis, the suggested control mode is identified to reduce the risk of ULFO. Moreover, a robust controller is designed for wind units based on mixed H2/H∞ robust control theory, and the control method makes use of the fast response ability of the converter without compromising the primary frequency regulation ability. Finally, a simulation model of a hydro-dominant sending power system with wind integration is established in PSCAD Version 4.6 software. The Pelton turbine has been widely regarded as the most efficient hydro turbine for high-head applications. However, the Pelton turbine buckets, especially the area commonly referred to as the 'splitter', are highly susceptible to erosion, drastically reducing efficiency over prolonged periods of time. This paper demonstrates a novel turbine idea that has been validated through both computational and experimental methods. This turbine addresses the issues associated with the erosion of the splitter through a redesign of the Pelton turbine to remove the need for a splitter and therefore potentially reducing downtime due to maintenance. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation results show that the turbine is capable of efficiencies greater than 82% with room for further improvement. The practical experimental results also show efficiencies within 6% of an optimized Pelton turbine. The results from this study indicate that through further optimization this turbine design could provide a means to produce power outputs similar to conventional Pelton turbines, with the added benefit of lower maintenance costs. Hydropower facilities are often remotely monitored or controlled from a centralized remote control room. Additionally, major component manufacturers monitor the performance of installed components, increasingly via public communication infrastructures. While these communications enable efficiencies and increased reliability, they also expand the cyber-attack surface. Communications may use the internet to remote control a facility's control systems, or it may involve sending control commands over a network from a control room to a machine. The content could be encrypted and decrypted using a public key to protect the communicated information. These cryptographic encoding and decoding schemes become vulnerable as more advances are made in computer technologies, such as quantum computing. In contrast, quantum key distribution (QKD) and other quantum cryptographic protocols are not based upon a computational problem, and offer an alternative to symmetric cryptography in some scenarios. Although the underlying mechanism of quantum cryptogrpahic protocols such as QKD ensure that any attempt by an adversary to observe the quantum part of the protocol will result in a detectable signature as an increased error rate, potentially even preventing key generation, it serves as a warning for further investigation. In QKD, when the error rate is low enough and enough photons have been detected, a shared private key can be generated known only to the sender and receiver. We describe how this novel technology and its several modalities could benefit the critical infrastructures of dams or hydropower facilities. Electrification using renewable energy sources represents a clear path toward solving the current global energy crisis. In Colombia, this challenge also involves the diversification of the electrical energy sources to overcome the historical dependence on hydropower. In this context, green hydrogen represents a key energy carrier enabling the storage of renewable energy as well as directly powering industrial and transportation sectors. This work explores the realistic potential of the main renewable energy sources, including solar photovoltaics (8172 GW), hydropower (56 GW), wind (68 GW), and biomass (14 GW). In addition, a case study from abroad is presented, demonstrating the feasibility of using each type of renewable energy to generate green hydrogen in the country. At the end, an analysis of the most likely regions in the country and paths to deploy green hydrogen projects are presented, favoring hydropower in the short term and solar in the long run. By 2050, this energy potential will enable reaching a levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) of 1.7, 1.5, 3.1 and 1.4 USD/kg-H2 for solar photovoltaic, wind, hydropower and biomass, respectively. This paper presents the results of the design process focused on the development of the energy subsystem (ES) of a wave energy converter (WEC). The ES is an important electrical part that significantly affects the energy reliability and energy efficiency of the entire WEC device. The designed ES was intended for compact WECs powering IoT network devices working in the distributed grid. The developed ES is an electronic circuit consisting of three cooperating subsystems used for energy conversion, energy storage, and energy management. The energy conversion subsystem was implemented as a set of single-phase bridge rectifiers. The energy storage subsystem was a battery-less implementation based on the capacitors. The energy management subsystem was implemented as a supervisory circuit and boost converter assembly. The designed ES was verified using the physical experiment method. The model experiment reflected the operation of the designed ES with a piezoelectric PZT-based WEC. The experimental results showed a 41.5% surplus of the energy supplied by ES over the energy demanded by the considered load at a duty cycle of ca. 6 min—37.2 mJ over 26.3 mJ, respectively. The obtained results have been evaluated and discussed. The results confirmed the designed ES as a convenient solution, which makes a significant contribution to the compact WECs that can be applied among others to a distributed grid of autonomous IoT network devices powered by free and renewable energy of sea waves. Climate change plays a vital role in the hydrology of any river basin, which may have multidimensional consequences. There is a need to conduct climate change impact assessment studies with updated models and scenarios. This study aimed to assess the impact of climate change on the streamflow and hydropower in Pakistan's Kunhar River basin. Three general circulation models (GCMs), under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathway scenarios (SSPs 2–45 and 5–85), the Soil and Water Assessment Tool, and the flow duration curve were used to project the change in climatic parameters, streamflow, and hydropower potential, respectively. The findings indicated that in the 2080s, the precipitation, maximum, and minimum temperatures are projected to increase by 10%, 2.0 °C, and 3.0 °C under the SSP 2–45 scenario and are projected to increase by 8%, 3.7 °C, and 4.4 °C under the SSP 5–85 scenario, respectively. The annual streamflow may increase by 15 to 11%, and the seasonal fluctuations are more likely to be dominant compared with the annual fluctuations. The hydropower potential will probably increase by 24 to 16% under the SSP 2–45 and 5–85 scenarios in the 2080s. Leakages in water distribution systems (WDSs) profoundly affect their operations, elevating water production demand and treatment and pumping costs. Moreover, they strain the energy system by increasing power requirements at pumping stations. In regions heavily reliant on hydropower, such as Brazil, there is a nuanced implication: diminishing reservoir water levels due to increased WDS flow withdrawal. This not only immediately affects hydropower generation by reducing available head but, over time, may lead to interruptions in hydropower generation. This paper investigates the water–energy nexus, specifically focusing on WDS leakages in Brazil. It begins with an overview of the current situation and future outlook, considering evolving policies to enhance WDS efficiency and also the evaluation of different climate change scenarios. A more in-depth case study explores a reservoir utilized for both energy and water production. In this context, leakage management assumes critical importance, given the various water uses within the reservoir that impact the available energy and water resources. Overall, this study offers a comprehensive perspective on the water–energy nexus within WDSs, underscoring the critical importance of leakage control and its direct and indirect consequences, particularly on energy generation capacity, the environment, and the economy. The frequent pressure pulsations due to hydraulic transients in hydropower plants induce cyclic loading on the rock mass that may contribute to increased instances of block falls and increased risk of tunnel collapse over the power plant lifetime. This study focuses on understanding the effect of frequent start and stop sequences of hydropower in unlined pressure tunnels. For this purpose, data from a pore water pressure monitoring system is utilized, which was installed at the downstream end of the headrace tunnel at the 50 MW Roskrepp hydropower plant in southern Norway. The objective of this study is to analyze the recorded data and quantify the impact of the hydraulic transient on the surrounding rock mass in the unlined pressure tunnel. The monitoring of pressure data over several years clearly shows that frequent load changes could cause a considerable effect on the rock mass and constituent joint system. A delayed response of the pressure in boreholes in the rock mass compared with inside the tunnel is seen in all start and stop sequences and is considered to be the main reason for instability caused by transients. The response of pore pressure in boreholes is greatly influenced by the characteristics of joints. The results show that the start sequence and shorter shutdown duration exert a greater impact on rock mass as compared to the stop sequence and longer shutdown duration. Therefore, it is recommended to increase the shutdown duration so that the impact can be minimized to increase the tunnel lifetime. All long-term hydropower planning problems require a forecast of the inflow during the planning period. However, it is challenging to accurately forecast inflows for a year or more. Therefore, it is common to use stochastic models considering the uncertainties of the inflow. This paper compares deterministic and stochastic models in a weekly rolling horizon framework considering inflow uncertainty. The stochastic model is tested in both a risk-neutral and a risk-averse version. The rolling horizon framework helps make periodic decisions and update the information in each rolling week, which minimizes the errors in prolonged forecasts. The models aim to utilize the water stored in the rainy season throughout the year with minimum load shedding while storing as much water as possible at the end of the planning horizon. The Conditional Value at Risk ( C V a R ) risk measure is used to develop the risk-averse stochastic model. Three different risk measures are investigated to choose the risk measure that yields the best outcome in the risk-averse problem, and the two best measures are compared to a deterministic and risk-neutral model in a weekly rolling horizon framework. The results show that the risk-neutral and best risk-averse models perform almost equally and are better than the deterministic model. We developed a Parsimonious Multi-dimensional Moving Window (PMMW) algorithm that only requires Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data of a watershed to efficiently locate potentially optimal hydropower sites. The methodology requires only open source DEM data; therefore, it can be used even in remotest watersheds of the world where in situ measurements are scarce or not available at all. We used three parameters in this algorithm, and tested the method using the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) derived DEMs. Our case study on the Morony Watershed, Montana, USA shows that (1) along with 6 out of the 7 existing hydropower plants being successfully located, 12 new potential hydropower sites were also identified, using a clearance of 1 km, diversion of 90 m, and Hydropower Index (HI) threshold of 109 m as the criteria. For the 12 new potential hydropower sites, 737.86 Megawatts (MW) ± 84.56 MW untapped hydropower potential in the Morony Watershed was also derived; (2) SRTM DEM is more suitable for determining the potential hydropower sites; (3) although the ASTER and SRTM DEMs provide elevation data with high accuracy, micro-scale elevation differences between them at some locations may have a profound impact on the HI. In today's intrinsically connected world, the Water–Food–Energy–Climate Nexus (WFEC Nexus) concept provides a starting point for informed and transparent decision-making based on the trade-offs and synergies between different sectors, including aquatic ecosystems, food security, energy production, and climate neutrality. The WFEC Nexus approach is particularly applicable in regions requiring transboundary water management, such as Central Asia. Unfortunately, this region with unevenly distributed water resources—consisting of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—is characterized by data scarcity, which limits informed decision-making. However, open-source geodata is becoming increasingly available. This paper aims to fill Central Asia's WFEC Nexus data gap by providing an overview of key data. We collected geodata through an integrated survey of stakeholders and researchers, stakeholder consultation, and literature screening. Sixty unique datasets were identified, belonging to one of six thematic categories: (1) climate, (2) hydrology, (3) geography and topography, (4) geomorphology, (5) ecology, and (6) anthropogenic uses. For each dataset, a succinct description, including a link to the online source, is provided. We also provide possible applications of using the presented datasets, demonstrating how they can assist in conducting various studies linked to the WFEC Nexus in Central Asia and worldwide. Microgrids are decentralized power production systems, where the energy production and consumption are very close to each other. Microgrids generally exploit renewable energy sources, encountering a problem of storage, as the power production from solar and wind is intermittent. This research presents a new integrated methodology and discusses a comparison of batteries and pumped storage hydropower (PSH) as energy storage systems with the integration of wind and solar PV energy sources, which are the major upcoming technologies in the renewable energy sector. We implemented the simulator and optimizer model (HOMER), which develops energy availability usage to obtain optimized renewable energy integration in the microgrid, showing its economic added value. Two scenarios are run with this model—one considers batteries as an energy storage technology and the other considers PSH—in order to obtain the best economic and technical results for the analyzed microgrid. The economic analysis showed a lower net present cost (NPC) and levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for the microgrid with PSH. The results showed that the microgrid with the storage of PSH was economical, with an NPC of 45.8 M€ and an LCOE of 0.379 €/kWh, in comparison with the scenario with batteries, which had an NPC of 95.2 M€ and an LCOE of 0.786 €/kWh. The role of storage was understood by differentiating the data into different seasons, using a Python model. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was conducted by varying the capital cost multiplier of solar PV and wind turbines to obtain the best optimal economic solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Double-regulated Kaplan turbines with adjustable guide vanes and runner blades offer a high degree of flexibility and good efficiency for a wide range of operating points. However, this also leads to a complex geometry and flow guidance with, for example, vortices of different sizes and strengths. The flow in a draft tube is especially challenging to simulate mainly due to flow phenomena, like swirl, separation and strong adverse pressure gradients, and a strong dependency on the upstream flow conditions. Standard simulation approaches with RANS turbulence models, a coarse mesh and large time step size often fail to correctly predict performance and can even lead to wrong tendencies in the overall behavior. To reveal occurring flow phenomena and physical effects, a scale-resolving hybrid RANS-LES simulation on a block structured mesh of about 400 million hexahedral elements of a double-regulated five-blade model Kaplan turbine is carried out. In this paper, first, the results of the ongoing simulation are presented. The major part of the simulation domain is running in LES mode and seems to be properly resolved. The validation of the simulation results with the experimental data shows mean deviations of less than 0.8% in the global results, i.e., total head and power, and a good visual agreement with the three-dimensional PIV measurements of the velocity in the cone and both diffuser channels of the draft tube. In particular, the trend of total head and the results for the draft tube differ significantly between the scale-resolving simulation and a standard RANS simulation. The standard RANS simulation exhibits a highly unsteady behavior of flow, which is not observed in the experiments or scale-resolving simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was motivated by the high reliance on hydropower plants (HPPs) developed and planned along the river Nile and the fact that drought events are the most imminent and drastic threats to Uganda's power production. The study aimed to assess HPPs' resilience and the effectiveness of selected adaptation measures. The climate, land, energy, and water system (CLEWs) framework was employed to assess resilience amidst competing water demands and stringent environmental flow requirements. Under extreme dry conditions, power generation could plummet by 91% over the next 40 years, which translates into an annual per capita consumption of 19 kWh, barely sufficient to sustain a decent socioeconomic livelihood. During arid conditions, climate models predicted an increase in streamflow with increasing radiative forcing. Restricting the ecological flow to 150 m3/s could improve generation by 207%. In addition, if planned power plants were to be built 5 years ahead of schedule, the normalized mean annual plant production could increase by 23%. In contrast, increasing reservoir volumes for planned power plants will have no significant impact on generation. The path to HPP resilience could entail a combination of diversifying the generation mix, installing generators with varying capacities, and incorporating adjustable orifices on reservoirs. Part I of this series of publications addressed the background and fundamentals of the lifetime assessment of prototype Francis turbines. Part II concentrated on the developed methods of numerical calculation and assessment procedures. The present contribution (Part III) deals with the instrumentation and the metrological range of the assessment procedure. The most important sensors, measurement tools, and data acquisition units are presented (background). The instrumentation of the prototype Francis turbine is used, on the one hand, for machine unit monitoring and plant operating and, on the other hand, for generating measurement data to validate and adjust/correct the numerical simulations. Measurement data form the basis for further evaluations at various levels. A wide variety of measured variables are required to carry out the remaining lifetime of a component using fatigue analysis. Those variables include pressure and acceleration signals, vibration monitoring, and strain gauge applications for mechanical stress analysis. The available measurement signals are divided into groups based on the developed method. Thus, already-available data from the control room are compared with machine monitoring and temporarily measured data. The correlation of all available data is essential today to determine an exact idea of the occurring flow phenomena and their effects on the mechanical stresses on the component. This interaction of the different data sources and, subsequently, the use of selected quantities for the numerical calculation are part of the newly developed concept for fatigue strength analysis of mechanical components of a turbine unit (methods). The results of this journal article are divided into the discussion of the necessary instrumentation and mounting of the sensors and into the evaluation, presentation, and interpretation of the measurement data. In addition, a fatigue strength assessment is made at the position of the strain gauges. These results serve as a basis for validating the numerical stress calculation. It is worth mentioning that the validation of the numerical results and the discussion of the deviations and error consideration is carried out in Part IV of this publication series (results). The recent energy shortfall in Pakistan has prompted the need for the development of hydropower projects to cope with the energy and monetary crisis. Hydropower in the northern areas is available yet has not been explored too much. Focusing on the sustainable development goal (SDG) "Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy", thirteen proposed sites were selected from upstream to downstream of the Hunza River for analysis. The head on all the proposed sites was determined by taking the elevation difference between the proposed turbine and the intake at all sites. The discharge on all proposed ungauged sites was determined using ArcGIS for watershed delineation and the area ratio method along with Soil Conservation Service–Curve Number (SCS-CN) by using gauged data of Hunza River provided by Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Pakistan at Daniyor bridge Gilgit, Shimshal and the Passo tributaries of Hunza River. The Location Search Algorithm (LSA) approach used a multi-criteria decision-making tool (MDM) to make a decision matrix considering the location and constraint criteria and then normalizing the decision matrix using benefit and cost criteria, the relative weights were assigned to all criteria using a rank sum weighted method and the sites were ranked on the basis of the final score. The results revealed that Hunza River has a significant hydropower potential and based on the final score in the LSA approach, proposed site 13, site 4 and site 9 were concluded as the most promising sites among proposed alternatives. The structural dynamic response of hydraulic turbines needs to be continuously monitored to predict incipient failures and avoid catastrophic breakdowns. Current methods based on traditional off-board vibration sensors mounted on fixed components do not permit inferring loads induced on rotating parts with enough accuracy. Therefore, the present paper assesses the performance of fiber Bragg grating sensors to measure the vibrations induced on a rotating shaft–disc assembly partially submerged in water resembling a hydraulic turbine rotor. An innovative mounting procedure for installing the sensors is developed and tested, which consists of machining a thin groove along a shaft line to embed a fiber-optic array that can pass through the bearings. At the top of the shaft, a rotary joint is used to extract, in real time, the signals to the interrogator. The shaft strain distribution is measured with high spatial resolution at different rotating speeds in air and water. From this, the natural frequencies, damping ratios, and their associated mode shapes are quantified at different operating conditions. Additionally, the change induced in the modes of vibration by the rotation effects is well captured. All in all, these results validate the suitability of this new fiber-optic technology for such applications and its overall better performance in terms of sensitivity and spatial resolution relative to traditional equipment. During the Digital Decade, the European Union (EU) is facing two important challenges: the green (and energy) transition and the digital transition, which are interconnected with one another. These transitions are of high relevance in several aspects of our life, e.g., in the industry, energy sector, transports, environmental management and our daily life. Digital technologies are particularly emerging also as multi-benefit solution in the water sector, as water is becoming more and more vulnerable to climate change (e.g., droughts and floods) and human activities (e.g., pollution and depletion). Within this context, in this study we assessed some of the several economic benefits that digital solutions can bring to the water sector, with a focus on leakage reduction in water distribution networks, reduction of combined sewer overflows and improvement of hydropower generation and operation. The benefits are calculated for each EU Member State and the UK, and then aggregated at the EU scale. Benefits were quantified in EUR 5.0, 0.14 and 1.7 billion per year (EUR 13.2 per person per year, on average), respectively, excluding environmental and social benefits, which may play a non-negligible role. The Alaska Railbelt transmission system runs from Fairbanks to Anchorage to Homer and supplies 75% of the state's population with power. In the near future, this system will experience significant increases in load due to electrification of the transportation and heating sectors. To account for this, several state organizations are working towards the creation of an integrated resource plan and reliability standards.This work encompasses the efforts of researching the operations, cost, and locations of desirable hydropower and pumped storage hydropower (PSH) resources in the areas surrounding the Railbelt transmission system. The aspects of conventional hydropower and PSH as well as adjustable-speed and ternary PSH were analyzed. With Alaska's diverse and rugged landscape, QGIS was utilized to delineate the positions of energy resources within a reasonable distance from the Railbelt. By incorporating Digital Terrain Models and the QGIS processing toolbox, a least cost path analysis was completed to filter out resources within the designated distance of the Railbelt. Applying existing cost models to the data in this work helped to decide the energy resources that would be studied further. Hydropower is one of the most sustainable and desirable renewable energy sources. Gravitational water vortex hydro turbine (GWVHT) systems are one of the most suitable and sustainable renewable power generation devices for remote and rural areas, particularly in developing countries, owing to their small scales and low costs. There are various GWVHT systems with different configurations and various operating conditions. The main components of a GWVHT system include the inlet and outlet channels, a basin, and a turbine on which there are a number of blades attached. This paper presents a comprehensive review regarding the progress and development of various GWVHT systems, covering broad aspects of GWVHT systems, particularly various types of basins, inlet and outlet channels, turbines with blades which have different shapes, orientations, sizes, numbers, etc. The nature of the previous studies is summarised. The fundamentals of the vortex dynamics involved and the quantitative analysis of the performance of GWVHT systems are also described. The turbulence models and multiphase models used in some leading numerical simulation studies have been reviewed. As a case study, the implementation of a GWVHT system in PNG is presented. Based on the review of previous studies regarding GWVHT systems, the major issues and challenges are summarised, and some key topics are recommended for future research work on the performance of GWVHT systems. In this paper, an hourly dispatch model was developed to analyze the system balancing and wind power curtailment challenges in the future of the Ethiopian electric power grid system. The developed model was validated using historical data and was used for the analysis of the grid system in 2030 with different scenarios. The model was used to examine the impacts of transmission capacity, regulation reserve requirement, and daily minimum generation of hydropower for irrigation with three cases of wind annual energy share of 14.5%, 17.8%, and 25.2%. Thus, the curtailment was found to be below 0.2%, 1.1%, and 9.8% for each case, respectively. The cost of wind energy increases in proportion to the percentage of curtailment and the increase in transmission line capacity. The increasing penetration of wind energy in electric power systems leads to a great demand for flexible resources to regulate power fluctuations. This paper focuses on investigating the impacts of the operational flexibility of hydropower generation systems on reducing wind curtailment and load shedding in a hybrid hydro–wind power system. Considering timescale variabilities of wind power, the upward and downward regulation capabilities of hydro flexibility under sub-hour and hour dispatch scales are estimated. Based on developed flexible indicators, the ultimate access ratio of wind power penetration into the power system is obtained by using the estimated probability of insufficient regulation reserves. All these analyses are carried out under the wet and dry periods to better understand their differences with the hydro flexibility. Hydropower as a renewable source can help many countries achieve their sustainable energy and climate goals, but large projects are challenging to finance because of their costs and risks. To fully realize the climate benefits of such projects, sponsors have recently fashioned complex financing arrangements that structure and allocate risks to reduce financing costs. This paper focuses on the blended financing approach adopted for the Nachtigal Hydropower Plant (NHP) in Cameroon. The purpose of the paper is to present a detailed systems analysis of Nachtigal's financial arrangement to address the question of why the complex financing approach worked in practice. We accomplish this by creating a "financial simulator"—a computational model for evaluating risks and incentives embedded within the financing structure under different contract architectures and risk–event scenarios. Our simulator is a dynamic value–risk calculator that can be easily updated to study other climate-oriented projects that involve complex financial arrangements. We evaluated three aspects of the financing/contractual arrangements that made Nachtigal "bankable:" (i) guarantees that covered nonpayments, (ii) financial options on locally sourced loans; and (iii) an interest rate swap. We found: (i) the guarantees recovered project value threatened by four specific risks often associated with large hydropower investments (cost overruns, schedule delays, offtake risk, and low flow due to climate change); (ii) the mechanism significantly lowered interest rate charges; and (iii) private finance was mobilized—especially due to the options. Battery storage is an important factor for power systems made up of renewable energy sources. Technologies for battery storage are crucial to accelerating the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Between responding to electricity demand and using renewable energy sources, battery storage devices will become increasingly important. The aim of this study is to examine how battery storage affects a power system consisting of solar and hydroelectric energy and to draw conclusions about whether energy storage recommends a power system. The method involves designing a model of eight real cascade hydropower power plants and solving an optimization problem. This power system model is based on existing hydroelectric power plants powered by solar energy and batteries in the Turkish cities of Yozgat and Tokat. A case study with four different battery capacities in the system was carried out to assess the implications of energy storage in the power system. The stochastic nonlinear optimization problem was modeled for 72 h and solved with the MATLAB programming tool. The stochastic Quasi-Newton method performs very well in hybrid renewable problems arising from large-scale machine learning. When solar energy and batteries were added to the system, the maximum installed wind power was found to be 2 MW and 3.6 MW, respectively. In terms of profit and hydropower planning, a medium-proportion battery was found to be the most suitable. Hydropower has grown to play an important role in power systems including increasing clean and low-carbon energies, and the effect of electric loads should be basically evaluated for the reliable operation of these systems. For the hydraulic–mechanical–electrical system of the hydropower station, the state equation model for stability evaluation was derived with typical electric load models and elastic models for pipe flow, and after experimental confirmation with a built single-unit setup for a system, the effects of different electrical loads and pipe flow models on typical hydropower systems stability were investigated in detail. The results indicate that for the built single-unit system with different load characteristics, the numerical results were basically consistent with experimental research, and the unit's regulation performance for the dynamic load was superior to that of the static load. Evident differences existed in the effects of different electric loads on the operational stability, mainly depending on the pipe length and the corresponding models, and an optimum-order elastic model of pipe flow was preferred to reveal the dynamic interactions between different systems. Furthermore, for a typical two-unit system, the potential coupling resonance hydraulic–mechanical–electrical system is pointed out with the preferred-order elastic model of pipe flow. The Mekong River is one of the most biodiverse, productive rivers in the world, supporting more than 1000 fish species and the livelihoods of tens of millions of people. The spatial dynamics and population status of many Mekong fish species, especially megafishes, are poorly understood. Therefore, this information is rarely incorporated into environmental risk assessments for large infrastructure projects, such as mainstream hydropower developments, which have been accelerating rapidly in the Mekong Basin. In this study, we present initial findings from the ongoing, collaborative, transnational acoustic telemetry monitoring of nearly 300 tagged fishes representing 27 species, which yield important insights into the potential impacts that proposed hydropower dams would have on populations of ecologically and economically important fish species. Included in these data are more than ten months of hydrophone records tracking the location of a 300 kg giant freshwater stingray, Urogymnus polylepis (Bleeker, 1852), currently the world's largest known freshwater fish, used to detect its migration behavior and distribution patterns. The telemetry data, combined with fisher surveys used to gather local ecological knowledge, provide evidence that the proposed dams would fragment the existing populations of this iconic species as well as those of other fish species that support river food web balance and local food systems. Furthermore, the existence of giant freshwater stringray populations and other unique megafauna reinforces the universal natural heritage value of the stretch of the Mekong River between the Lao People's Democratic Republic/Cambodia border and the city of Kratie. This stretch of river is located between two proposed megadams, the 900 MW Stung Treng Dam and the 2300 MW Sambor Dam. However, the Cambodian Ministry of Environment has also proposed this area for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Biosphere Reserve). The documentation of the movement of migratory fishes through this reach of the river using acoustic telemetry, the surprising discovery of the world's largest freshwater fish, the potential threat posed by dam construction, and the management ramifications of UNESCO World Heritage Site designation underscore the importance of scientific research and community involvement in landscape-scale development decisions. The decisions made today will affect the fate of this global biodiversity hotspot, the world's most productive inland fisheries, and the livelihoods of millions of people throughout the Lower Mekong Basin. Featured Application: The tests provide insights into the effectiveness of energy dissipation facilities and offer suggestions for improving the flood discharge mode at hydropower stations to ensure safe operation during flood discharge. In order to assess the effectiveness of reconstructed energy dissipation facilities (EDFs) in open channels at hydropower stations, hydraulic prototype observation (HPO) tests are conducted to investigate the characteristics of discharge flow and the dynamic response of hydraulic structures during sluice opening periods. While hydraulic model tests (HMTs) are commonly utilized in laboratory settings to study these characteristics, experimental conditions cannot fully replicate the real-world operations of such structures. HPO tests are employed to examine flow patterns, free water surface fluctuations, and pulsating pressure changes in open channels under varying flood discharge conditions (FDCs). Flow patterns in open channels are recorded via video; free water surface fluctuations are measured using total-station and laser rangefinder instruments; and pulsating pressure is monitored with pressure sensors and data collection systems. Flow pattern observations concentrate on addressing adverse water flow phenomena, such as turbulence, surging, and backflow. The examination of free water surface fluctuations aims to verify whether the height of the guide wall along the open channel fulfills the necessary requirements and assess the effectiveness of energy dissipation of the EDF. To comprehend the variations in pulsating pressure within the continuous sill and the base slab, nine measurement points were established across three sections perpendicular to the continuous sill's axis on three distinct elevation levels. Additionally, three measurement points were positioned on the reinforced base slab along the open channel's axis. The findings indicate that the impact on the continuous sill caused by discharging water is more severe when the discharge rate of a single sluice gate reaches 500 m3/s than in other FDCs. To ensure the safe operation of open channels during flood discharge, the discharge rate for each sluice gate should be reduced to 250 m3/s. The dominant pulsation induced by discharge flow falls within the low-frequency range, resulting in minimal adverse effects on the stilling basin and guide wall. The flow pattern within the stilling basin remains stable under various FDCs, with no significant adverse hydraulic phenomena observed. Parameters, including free water surface fluctuations and pulsating pressure variations, lie within acceptable ranges. The transition to renewable energy sources is crucial for mitigating the impacts of climate change and achieving sustainable development goals. In China, the rapid industrialization and urbanization have led to an increasing demand for energy, highlighting the urgent need to transition to alternative energy sources. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative energy sources in China, considering multiple criteria such as cost, environmental impact, energy output, reliability, and scalability. We employed a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) approach to compare and rank different energy sources based on these criteria. Our findings indicate that wind energy is the most effective alternative energy source overall due to its relatively low cost, high efficiency, moderate environmental impact, good scalability, and high reliability. However, geothermal energy had the lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), while hydro energy performed well in terms of efficiency and reliability. The environmental impact of wind energy was found to be moderate but still less severe compared to other energy sources. Our study provides important insights into the trade-offs and considerations that policymakers and industry leaders must make when selecting which energy sources to prioritize. The findings highlight the need for a comprehensive and integrated approach to energy policy that balances economic, environmental, and social considerations. In conclusion, this study contributes to the literature by emphasizing the importance of considering multiple criteria when evaluating alternative energy sources. This article presents a study of the specific features and development factors of renewable energy in macro-regions that combine extractive and industrial clusters with rural, sparsely populated areas. While in some countries—leaders in energy transition (the EU, China)—the growth of investments in solar, wind, and hydropower production is taking place systematically within the framework of an increasing number of national and international strategies and programs, in the Russian Federation there is a lack of renewable generation capacity. Particular difficulties are experienced in regions that, on the one hand, have a developed fuel and raw material complex and, therefore, fuel generation (which makes a significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions), and, on the other hand, many rural, sparsely populated areas that are in need of new distributed generation. The aim of the study is to analyze the factors of transition to renewable energy in mineral-resource regions, such as the Siberian Federal District (Siberia), as well as to identify measures to enhance their effectivity. The article shows the place of Siberia in the national energy system and considers the factors related to its energy transition in detail, e.g., the saturation with main powerlines, the control of air pollution caused by fuel energy facilities, its provision with fuel resources, investments in renewable energy, and ways of improving the health and well-being of the local population. Attention is drawn to the challenges and obstacles related to the development of renewable energy in the Siberian Federal District, associated, on the one hand, with Russia's lagging behind other countries in the dynamics of energy transition, and on the other hand, with external and internal technological and investment restrictions. One of the challenges posed by renewable energies is the stabilization of parameters related to the quality of electrical energy. This study demonstrates the existence of a relationship between input blocks of hydropower and the variation of the fundamental frequency of the electricity grid. By mapping production data provided by the Spanish Electric Network with frequency measured in the laboratory, it is shown that gradients of hydropower are correlated with frequency fluctuations for certain characteristic times. Considering hourly instances of energy input, the study compares two methods for calculating hydropower gradients (linear regression and pseudo-linear regression) and two methods for calculating local frequency extrema (the "specular inertia" method and analysis by comparison with the moving average) in order to corroborate the results. Kaplan turbines, as one of the well-known hydraulic turbines, are generally utilized worldwide for low-head and high-flow conditions. Any failure in each of the turbine components can result in long-term downtime and high repair costs. In a particular case, if other parts are damaged due to the impact of the broken blades (e.g., the main shaft of the turbine), the whole power plant may be shut down. On the other hand, further research on the primary causes of failures in turbines can help improve the present failure evaluation methodologies in power plants. Hence, the main objective of this paper is to present the major causes of Kaplan turbine failures to prevent excessive damage to the equipment and provide practical solutions for them. In general, turbines are mainly subjected to both Internal Object Damage (IOD) and Foreign Object Damage (FOD). Accordingly, this paper presents a state-of-the-art review of Kaplan turbine failures related to material and physical defects, deficiencies in design, deficits in manufacturing and assembly processes, corrosion failures, fatigue failure, cavitation wear, types of cavitation in hydro turbines, hydro-abrasive problems, and hydro-erosion problems. The drought event of 2018–2019 significantly affected most of Central Europe. In this study, the development and intensity of drought in the Lusatian Neisse river catchment were evaluated, based on the indices of SPI, SPEI, and low flow periods related to hydrological drought. Furthermore, multiannual variability in the drought indices, as well as the trends for air temperature and precipitation totals, were examined for 1981–2020. In the catchment, deficit of precipitation was noticed from autumn 2017 to spring 2020, additionally accompanied by a high thermal anomaly. In the summer seasons, heat waves occurred, which intensified evaporation and increased water deficit. The meteorological drought already appeared in spring 2018, developed in the following months, and became more intensive. The frequency of days with discharges >Q70% exceeded 55%. According to SPI12 and SPEI12, the episode of 2018–2019 can be assessed as the longest period of severe drought in the whole of 1981–2020. The drought caused various consequences in the region. The deterioration of water quality and selected biological indices was one of the effects. In the sector of agriculture, yield reduction in corn and wheat amounted to 33% and 18% in 2018 and 22% and 9% in 2019. In addition, decrease in hydropower generation by more than 30% was noticed. Hydropower is the most prevalent source of renewable energy production worldwide. As the global demand for robust and ecologically sustainable energy production increases, developing and enhancing the current energy production processes is essential. In the past decade, machine learning has contributed significantly to various fields, and hydropower is no exception. All three horizons of hydropower models could benefit from machine learning: short-term, medium-term, and long-term. Currently, dynamic programming is used in the majority of hydropower scheduling models. In this paper, we review the present state of the hydropower scheduling problem as well as the development of machine learning as a type of optimization problem and prediction tool. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey article that provides a comprehensive overview of machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in the hydroelectric power industry for scheduling, optimization, and prediction. Power generation from river hydropower plants depends mainly on river flow. Water fluctuations in the river make the yield process unpredictable. To reduce these fluctuations, building a small reservoir at the river flow of the hydropower plant is recommended. Conventionally, classic single-pond models are commonly used to design run-of-river hydropower plants. However, such models are associated with fluctuations, sagging, and irregular power fluctuations that lead to irregular water fluctuations. This research proposes a novel idea to replace the single-pond model with a three-pond model to increase the plant's overall efficiency. The three-pond model is developed as a three-tank nonlinear hydraulic system that contains the same amount of water as a conventional single pond. It also has the advantage of minimizing the run-of-river power plant's dependence on river flow and increasing efficiency by trapping swell and turbulence in the water. Collaboration has the potential to aid the balancing of values and goals that belong to different, sometimes competing, policy fields, such as energy, climate adaptation and nature conservation—a key component of sustainable governance. However, we need to know more of how collaboration can function as integrating (and integrated) components of governance systems. Three regulated Swedish rivers are used here as examples to explore factors that influence this function. The following factors are identified: transparency of value trade-offs, understanding of collaboration and governance, interplay between public sectors, integrating funding mechanisms, clarity of mandate, strategic use of networks and consistency of the governance system. As a consequence of the poor management of these factors in our case, water quality and ecology values are not integrated in strategic decision making, e.g., regarding hydropower, urban development or climate adaptation. Instead, they are considered add-ons, or "decorations". The Swedish case illustrates the meaning of the factors and their great importance for achieving sustainable governance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
