Industrial sectors are improving their energy efficiency and increasing their share of renewables for heating and cooling demands by using lower emission technologies. One specific approach to help achieve these targets is the integration of heat pumps (HPs) in industrial processes. However, due to the temporal variation of the heating and cooling requirements in non-continuous processes, the integration of HP is challenging. In this paper, a structured method for the design of HP integration is proposed. The method implements an engineer-centred workflow that extends the concept of the Indirect Source Sink Profile (ISSP) to HP integration. For this purpose, an adapted Grand Composite Curve is derived from the ISSP. This ensures correct HP integration across the pinch while maintaining the temperature lift of the HP small. The proposed workflow is applied to a demonstration case study and a case study from industry. In both cases, the resulting system with integrated HP enables the elimination of hot utility demand and significantly reduces cold utility demands. To realize the design of mixed-traffic railway lines, the choice of radius must ensure a comfortable ride for passenger vehicles, safe freight transport, and acceptable maintenance costs of vehicle wheels and railway infrastructure. This is not a straightforward task, and what is worse, there is a worldwide lack of clear criteria to limit the design parameters involved in the geometric definition of high-speed railway lines. The proof of this is the great number of technical standards (or recommendations) that are applied depending on the period of time, the administrations involved, or the technicians in charge. If the line is going to be aimed at mixed-speed traffic, this indetermination is even more severe, as the different type of trains that are forecasted to use the tracks (with different loads, speeds, etc.) should affect the limits of the design parameters. To begin to solve this problem, this paper aimed (1) to analyze the design parameters and limitation defined in several technical standards that are used to design high-speed railway lines, (2) to propose a graphical method for designing the horizontal alignment (the cant, the radius, and the clothoid), and (3) to apply the method to a real example to compare our proposed design with the original project for a case study in Spain. Rotational Risley prisms are one of the fastest two-dimensional (2D) optomechanical scanning systems. Their drawback is the strong non-linearity of the scan patterns they produce, in contrast to the most common (but slower) raster scanning modalities of 2D dual axis galvanometer scanners (GSs) or Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) with oscillatory mirrors. The aim of this work is to develop a graphical method, which, to our knowledge, we have introduced to determine and characterize, using a commercially-available mechanical design program (for example CATIA V5R20 (Dassault Systems, Paris, France)) to simulate the exact scan patterns of rotational Risley prisms. Both the maximum and minimum angular and linear deviations of this type of scanner are deduced theoretically to characterize the outer diameter/Field-of-View (FOV) and the inner diameter (of the blind zone) of its ring-shaped patterns, respectively. This multi-parameter analysis is performed in correlation with the shape of the scan patterns, considering the four possible configurations of laser scanners with a pair of rotational Risley prisms, as well as all their parameters: prisms angles, refractive indexes, rotational speeds, distance between the two prisms, and the distance from the system to the scanned plane. Marshall's synthetic parameters are also considered, i.e., the ratios of the rotational velocities and of the angles of the prisms. Rules-of-thumb for designing this optomechanical scanner are extracted from this analysis, regarding both shapes and dimensions of the scan patterns to be produced. DC–DC converter fault diagnosis, executed via neural networks built by exploiting the information deriving from testability analysis, is the subject of this paper. The networks under consideration are complex valued neural networks (CVNNs), whose fundamental feature is the proper treatment of the phase and the information contained in it. In particular, a multilayer neural network based on multi-valued neurons (MLMVN) is considered. In order to effectively design the network, testability analysis is exploited. Two possible ways for executing this analysis on DC–DC converters are proposed, taking into account the single-fault hypothesis. The theoretical foundations and some applicative examples are presented. Computer programs, based on symbolic analysis techniques, are used for both the testability analysis and the neural network training phase. At gauged watersheds, the time of concentration can be estimated using rainfall-runoff data; however, at ungauged watersheds, empirical methods are used instead. Large errors in the application of empirical methods may cause inaccurate modeling of floods and unreliable structure design. In this paper, methods for calculating the time of concentration (Tc) were compared to identify the best equation for estimating Tc in ungauged watersheds of an arid region. The graphical method, based on measured data, was compared to 15 empirical methods to determine which empirical method returned the best results. The graphical method was applied to 33 rainfall-runoff events in four rural sub-watersheds located in the central parts of Hormozgan province, Iran. A ranking-based procedure was used to select the best performing empirical methods. To minimize bias and improve accuracy, the best performing empirical methods were modified by adjusting their formulas. According to the study, three empirical methods: (1) Williams, (2) Pilgrim and Mac Dermott, and (3) Arizona DOT, performed the best in the study areas. The results also showed that the modified Williams and Arizona DOT's formulas were able to estimate the time of concentration in ungauged watersheds with an error lower than 1%. Featured Application: This article proposes a novel graphical approach for the the assessment of parallelism of biomarker tests that takes into consideration situations where parallelism is partially lacking. The new approach expands on earlier observations and criticism of the limitations of statistical methods included in the guidelines of regulatory authorities. Researchers in the field concur on emphasising the importance of ensuring the accuracy and reliability; a pertinent point which still remains to be addressed. To this purpose, two primary computational approaches are discussed: (a) statistical assessment and (b) visual assessment. Statistical methods, such as regression analysis and parallelism/non-parallelism indexes, offer precision and objectivity, making them suitable for large datasets and high accuracy requirements. They can detect subtle differences in parallelism that may be missed by visual assessment. However, they assume a linear relationship between analyte concentration and assay response, which may not always hold true. Visual assessment relies on interpreting graphs or charts depicting the biomarker–concentration–response relationship. It is intuitive and can quickly identify gross deviations from partial parallelism, making it useful for screening biomarker assays. Visual assessment may detect non-parallelism due to confounding factors that statistical methods might miss. The graphical method proposed here suggests using partial parallelism plots, which visually depict the relationship between biomarker concentration and assay response for each sample. These plots enable the identification of non-parallelism caused by analytical issues or confounding factors. They assist in determining the optimal range of dilutions for each sample and provide a language that is easily understood by researchers, regulatory authorities, and technicians. For regulatory authorities, this document provides valuable insights into the assessment of partial parallelism for biomarker tests. It highlights the need for both statistical and visual assessment methods to evaluate parallelism accurately. The proposed use of partial parallelism plots can aid in visualising and understanding the relationship between biomarker concentration and assay response. By considering these plots during the evaluation of biomarker assays, regulatory authorities can ensure the accuracy, reliability, and suitability of these tests as trial outcome measures and for clinical use. Demonstrating parallelism in quantitative laboratory tests is crucial to ensure accurate reporting of data and minimise risks to patients. Regulatory authorities make the demonstration of parallelism before clinical use approval mandate. However, achieving statistical parallelism can be arduous, especially when parallelism is limited to a subrange of the data. To address potential biases and confounds, I propose a simple graphical method, the Partial Parallelism Plot, to demonstrate partial parallelism. The proposed method offers ease of understanding, intuitiveness, and graphical simplicity. It enables the graphical assessment of quantitative data risk when parallelism is lacking within a defined range. As parallelism may not be consistent across the entire analytical range, the plots focus on partial parallelism. The method can readily be programmed into graphical applications for enhanced interactivity. By providing a clear graphical representation, the method allows researchers to ascertain the presence of parallelism in laboratory tests, thus aiding in the validation process for trials and clinical applications. The armature reaction of the hybrid excitation starter generator (HESG) under load conditions will affect the distribution of the main magnetic field and the output performance. However, using the conventional field-circuit combination method to study the armature reaction has the problem of low accuracy and inaccurate influencing factors. Therefore, this paper proposed a graphical method to analyze the armature reaction and a new type of HESG with a combined-pole permanent magnet (PM) rotor and claw-pole electromagnetic rotor. The analytical formula of the voltage regulation rate under the armature reaction was derived using the graphical method. The main influencing parameters of the armature reaction magnetic field (ARMF) were analyzed, and the overall output performance was analyzed using finite element software. On this basis, comparison analyses before and after optimization and the prototype test were carried out. The results show that the direct-axis armature reaction reactance, quadrature-axis armature reaction reactance, and voltage regulation rate of the optimized HESG were significantly reduced, the output voltage range of the whole machine was wide, and the voltage regulation performance was good. The Weibull algorithm is one of the most accurate tools for forecasting and estimating wind energy potential. Two main parameters of the Weibull algorithm are the 'Weibull shape' and 'Weibull scale' factors. There are six different numerical methods to estimate the two Weibull parameters. These six methods are the empirical method of Justus (method 1), the empirical method of Lysen (method 2), the maximum likelihood method (method 3), the modified maximum likelihood method (method 4), the energy pattern factor method (method 5) and the graphical method (method 6). Many commercial wind energy software programs use the Weibull algorithm, and these six methods are used to calculate the potential wind energy at a given site. However, their accuracy is rarely discussed, particularly regarding wind data height. For this purpose, wind data measured for a long period (six years) at real sites are introduced. The wind data sites are categorized into three levels, i.e., low, medium, and high, based on wind data measurement height. The analysis shows that methods 1 and 2 are the most accurate methods among all six methods at low and medium heights. The number of errors increases with the height of these two methods. Methods 3 and 4 are the most suitable options for larger heights, as these scenarios have minimal error. In recent years, wind energy has become remarkably popular among renewable energy sources due to its low installation costs and easy maintenance. Having high energy potential is of great importance in the selection of regions where wind energy investments will be made. In this study, the wind power potential in Çanakkale Province, located in the northwest of Türkiye, is examined, and the wind speed is estimated using hourly and daily data over a one-year period. The data, including 12 different meteorological parameters, were taken from the Turkish State Meteorological Service. The two-parameter Weibull and Rayleigh distributions, which are the most widely preferred models in wind energy studies, are employed to estimate the wind power potential using hourly wind speed data. The graphical method is implemented to calculate the shape (k) and scale (c) parameters of the Weibull distribution function. Daily average wind speed estimation is performed with artificial neural network–genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) and ANN–particle swarm optimization (ANN-PSO) hybrid approaches. The proposed hybrid ANN-GA and ANN-PSO algorithms provide correlation coefficient values of 0.94839 and 0.94042, respectively, indicating that the predicted and measured wind speed values are notably close. Currently, Pakistan is facing severe energy crises and global warming effects. Hence, there is an urgent need to utilize renewable energy generation. In this context, Pakistan possesses massive wind energy potential across the coastal areas. This paper investigates and numerically analyzes coastal areas' wind power density potential. Eight different state-of-the-art numerical methods, namely an (a) empirical method, (b) graphical method, (c) wasp algorithm, (d) energy pattern method, (e) moment method, (f) maximum likelihood method, (g) energy trend method, and (h) least-squares regression method, were analyzed to calculate Weibull parameters. We computed Weibull shape parameters (WSP) and Weibull scale parameters (WCP) for four regions: Jiwani, Gwadar, Pasni, and Ormara in Pakistan. These Weibull parameters from the above-mentioned numerical methods were analyzed and compared to find an optimal numerical method for the coastal areas of Pakistan. Further, the following statistical indicators were used to compare the efficiency of the above numerical methods: (i) analysis of variance ( R 2 ), (ii) chi-square ( X 2 ), and (iii) root mean square error (RMSE). The performance validation showed that the energy trend and graphical method provided weak performance for the observed period for four coastal regions of Pakistan. Further, we observed that Ormara is the best and Jiwani is the worst area for wind power generation using comparative analyses for actual and estimated data of wind power density from four regions of Pakistan. Laser scanners with rotational Risley prisms produce scan patterns that can be classified as a type of rhodonea curve, because of their symmetry. The present study builds upon the novel, graphical method that we have developed to simulate and analyze such patterns using a commercially available mechanical design program, CATIA V5R20 (Dassault Systems, Paris, France). This graphical method has both the advantage of simplicity (regarding analytical methods) and of generating exact scan patterns (in contrast to approximate methods). The aim of this work is to utilize this method to study symmetry properties of scan patterns produced by a pair of rotational Risley prisms. A multi-parameter analysis is performed, considering the characteristic parameters of the approached scanner: refractive indexes and angles of the prisms, as well as their rotational velocities. Furthermore, Marshall's parameters are considered: ratios of the rotational velocities and of the prism angles. Because the symmetries are identical for scan patterns generated by all the four possible configurations of a pair of prisms (and only their dimensions are different), the shape of these patterns is studied only for one of these configurations. Therefore, without losing generality, the symmetries of the patterns produced by such scanners are determined, as well as some of their characteristic dimensions. Rules-of-thumb were obtained to be able to generate patterns that are appropriate for a specific application. Moreover, we demonstrated that the existing symmetries simplify the process of obtaining the scan patterns by identifying repetitive parts (defined as structures of symmetry) of a pattern. The monkeypox virus (MPXV) has caused an unusual epidemiological scenario—an epidemic within a pandemic (COVID-19). Despite the inherent evolutionary and adaptive capacity of poxviruses, one of the potential triggers for the emergence of this epidemic was the change in the status of orthopoxvirus vaccination and eradication programs. This epidemic outbreak of HMPX spread worldwide, with a notable frequency in Europe, North America, and South America. Due to these particularities, the objective of the present study was to assess and compare cases of HMPX in these geographical regions through logistic and Gompertz mathematical modeling over one year since its inception. We estimated the highest contagion rates (people per day) of 690, 230, 278, and 206 for the world, Europe, North America, and South America, respectively, in the logistic model. The equivalent values for the Gompertz model were 696, 268, 308, and 202 for the highest contagion rates. The Kruskal–Wallis Test indicated different means among the geographical regions affected by HMPX regarding case velocity, and the Wilcoxon pairwise test indicated the absence of significant differences between the case velocity means between Europe and South America. The coefficient of determination (R2) values in the logistic model varied from 0.8720 to 0.9023, and in the Gompertz model, they ranged from 0.9881 to 0.9988, indicating a better fit to the actual data when using the Gompertz model. The estimated basic reproduction numbers ( R 0 ) were more consistent in the logistic model, varying from 1.71 to 1.94 in the graphical method and from 1.75 to 1.95 in the analytical method. The comparative assessment of these mathematical modeling approaches permitted the establishment of the Gompertz model as the better-fitting model for the data and the logistic model for the R 0 . However, both models successfully represented the actual HMPX case data. The soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) is a key constitutive relationship for unsaturated soil which can be unimodal or bimodal. For the fine-grained compacted subgrade soil with a bimodal pattern, the determination of SWCC is complicated and needs a wide-range suction measurement. In this paper, the bimodal SWCC of a subgrade soil derived from the compaction condition was measured and determined by incorporating pore size distribution. For this purpose, a series of laboratory tests were conducted, including the pressure plate method, filter paper method, and vapor equilibrium method, which were used to measure SWCC at the low, medium, and high suction range, respectively. The pore size distribution (PSD) data were obtained by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests and used to predict SWCC. Based on the analysis of hydraulic paths and SWCC-PSD correlations, the SWCC of the subgrade soil should be determined to follow the actual hydraulic path. SWCC within a low suction range can be filled by PSD-based data to improve the fitting accuracy. Then, a graphical method is applied to predict the bimodal SWCC by combining the filter paper method, vapor equilibrium method, and PSD-based data. The prediction curves fit well with the test data for all selected compaction conditions. Furthermore, the prediction method can still provide good prediction performance in the absence of high suction section data, which is beneficial for the application of bimodal SWCC. Process Variability (PV) is a significant water quality time-series measurement. It is a critical element in detecting abnormality. Typically, the quality control system should raise an alert if the PV exceeds its normal value after a proper delay time (DT). The literature does not address the relation between the extended process variability and the time delay for a warning. The current paper shows a graphical method for calibrating a Water Quality Model based on these two parameters. The amount of variability is calculated based on the Euclidean distance between records in a dataset. Typically, each multivariable process has some relation between the variability and the time delay. In the case of a short period (a few minutes), the PV may be high. However, as the relevant DT is longer, it is expected to see the PV converge to some steady state. The current paper examines a method for estimating the relationship between the two measurements (PV and DT) as a detection tool for abnormality. Given the user's classification of the actual event for true and false events, the method shows how to build a graphical map that helps the user select the best thresholds for the model. This Special Issue of I Social Sciences i has introduced and applied the systemist graphical method of conveying ideas. International relations (IR) served as a natural starting point in this discussion because of its engagement with many other disciplines, such as psychology (Ben-Nun Bloom and Gregor) and religious studies (Akbaba).[1] It would be easy to expand the disciplines represented beyond those that have been included in this Special Issue, both in tandem with IR and on an individual basis. All the studies referenced in the preceding six substantive contributions of the Special Issue appear in the VIRP archive. The balance of the mineral nutrition in mango leaves during the flowering period affects the flowering of mango trees and fruit production. Because the soil in karst areas has a slow and unbalanced supply rate of nutrients, mango orchards in a karst area generally have a low yield. There are few studies on the fertilization of mango orchards in karst areas, especially on the diagnosis of leaf mineral nutrition. In this study, mango orchards in the typical karst areas of Guangxi province, one of the main mango-producing areas in China, were selected from the low-yielding and medium-yielding mango orchards. Surface soil samples and leaf samples from mango orchards in full bloom were collected to test for macronutrients and micronutrients. The Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System (DRIS) graphical method, the DRIS method, the Modified DRIS (M-DRIS), and the Deviation from Optimum Percentage (DOP) index diagnostic methods were applied to the leaves. The results showed that the DRIS graphical analysis yielded appropriate ratios of N, P, K, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Cu with the corresponding three elements, Ca, Zn, and B, which can be used as reference diagnostic criteria. Based on the values of the DRIS diagnostic criteria for high-yielding orchards, the critical ranges of the suitable values of the mineral nutrients in the Tainong mango leaves during flowering were determined as N (14.87–17.27 g/kg), P (0.69–0.89 g/kg), K (4.45–6.90 g/kg), Ca (9.51–16.55 g/kg), Mg (1.44–2.20 g/kg), S (0.75–1.06 g/kg), Fe (0.10–0.13 g/kg), Mn (0.61–1.02 g/kg), Cu (5.41–8.89 mg/kg), Zn (7.91–18.95 mg/kg), and B (8.38–16.23 mg/kg). The results of the DRIS, M-DRIS, and DOP index methods were analyzed to determine the order of the fertilizer requirements for the low-yielding orchards: Mg > Fe > S > Zn > B > Cu > K > N > P > Mn > Ca, and for the medium-yielding orchards: Mg > Fe > B > Zn > S > Cu > N > Mn > K > P > Ca. The soil and leaf correlation analysis showed that the soil exchangeable Ca and effective Fe were significantly negatively correlated. Leaf Ca and Fe elements had a mutually antagonistic effect, leaf Mn-rich contents inhibited the uptake of the Mg and Fe elements, and low-yielding orchards had an excess of Mn and a deficiency of Mg. We found that there is lack of the Mg and Fe, a low content of the S and B, and an excess of the Ca and Mn in the mango orchards of the Baise karst area. We suggested that the DRIS graphical method is suitable for the diagnosis of three nutrient elements, and either the DRIS or M-DRIS index method can be chosen. The Great Wall is an example of linear cultural Heritage (LCH) subjected to a fragile ecological environment and unbalanced economic development. However, no studies have been conducted to assess the sustainable development suitability (SDS) of the Great Wall region. Heritage area development assessments can increase public and government knowledge of the state of heritage areas and aid decision makers in formulating sensible policies or plans to protect and develop heritage areas. The valley is the spatial model of mountain economic development proposed on the basis of a basin combined with the ecological protection, rural development, and cultural inheritance present in mountainous areas. This study chose 169 valley units in the Beijing Great Wall Cultural Belt as research objects. A 15-indicator assessment index system was established based on the ecological, socio-economic, and cultural dimensions. The assessment procedure was enhanced by employing the triangle graphical method, and spatial autocorrelation was used to study the geographical distribution features of the development suitability scores derived from the research region. The results show the following facts: (1) Yanqing, Huairou, Miyun, Pinggu, and Changping have high development suitability results, whereas Mentougou and Changping have low scores. (2) In total, 96 valley units have practical advantages, and 51.5% are comprehensive development types (with advantages in at least two aspects). (3) Valley development suitability scores spatially cluster into seven high- and low-value groups. The ecological carrying capacity of the Badaling Cluster cannot maintain its overheated development. The results match up well with the objective condition of planning in the Beijing Great Wall National Cultural Park. Simple Summary: We investigated the trophic ecology of the Golden Alpine salamander (Salamandra atra aurorae), a rare and endemic amphibian found in a mixed temperate forest in northern Italy. We aimed to determine the salamander's trophic niche, prey selectivity, and individual specialization in foraging. We analysed stomach contents from 53 salamanders obtained by stomach flushing technique and assessed prey availability through pitfall traps. The results revealed that the Golden Alpine salamander adopts a generalist feeding strategy at the population level but selectively prefers certain prey categories, such as Myriapoda and Hymenoptera (except Formicidae). Factors like prey size, movement ability, and degree of chitinization seem to influence food preference. The study also found significant inter-individual variation in dietary preferences, which was discussed in relation to optimal diet theory. Our research provides valuable insights into the diet of the Alpine salamander complex, suggesting similar feeding strategies between the subspecies. Amphibians are considered critical species in the nutrient flow within and across ecosystems, and knowledge on their trophic ecology and niches is crucial for their conservation. For the first time we studied the trophic ecology of the rare and endemic Salamandra atra aurorae in a mixed temperate forest in northern Italy. We aimed to define the realized trophic niche, investigate the prey selectivity and explore possible levels of individual specialization. In summer 2022 we obtained stomach contents from 53 salamanders by stomach flushing and prey availability using pitfall traps. We used the Costello graphical method to analyse the realized trophic niche, and the relativized electivity index to study prey selectivity. Our results show that the Golden Alpine salamander adopts a generalist feeding strategy with positive selection of few prey categories (e.g., Myriapoda, Hymenoptera except Formicidae). Food preference seems to be driven by size, movement ability and chitinization of the prey. A high degree of inter-individual diet variation, modularity and clustering was found, describing a scenario that can be framed in a Distinct Preference model framework. We explored two different graph methods for visualizing the prevalence of self-reported post-COVID anosmia and ageusia in a large sample of individuals who had been previously hospitalized in five different hospitals. A cohort of 1266 previously hospitalized COVID-19 survivors participated. Participants were assessed at hospitalization (T0) and at three different follow-up periods: 8.4 (T1), 13.2 (T2), and 18.3 (T3) months after hospital discharge. They were asked about the presence of self-reported anosmia and ageusia that they attributed to infection. Anosmia was defined as a self-perceived feeling of complete loss of smell. Ageusia was defined as a self-perceived feeling of complete loss of taste. Data about hospitalization were recorded from medical records. The results revealed that the prevalence of anosmia decreased from 8.29% (n = 105) at hospitalization (T0), to 4.47% (n = 56) at T1, to 3.27% (n = 41) at T2, and 3.35% (n = 42) at T3. Similarly, the prevalence of ageusia was 7.10% (n = 89) at the onset of SARS-CoV-2 infection (T0), but decreased to 3.03% (n = 38) at T1, to 1.99% (n = 25) at T2, and 1.36% (n = 17) at T3. The Sankey plots showed that only 10 (0.8%) and 11 (0.88%) patients exhibited anosmia and ageusia throughout all the follow-ups. The exponential curves revealed a progressive decrease in prevalence, demonstrating that self-reported anosmia and ageusia improved in the years following hospitalization. The female sex (OR4.254, 95% CI 1.184–15.294) and sufferers of asthma (OR7.086, 95% CI 1.359–36.936) were factors associated with the development of anosmia at T2, whereas internal care unit admission was a protective factor (OR0.891, 95% CI 0.819–0.970) for developing anosmia at T2. The use of a graphical method, such as a Sankey plot, shows that post-COVID self-reported anosmia and ageusia exhibit fluctuations during the first years after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Biomass has gained global attention as one of the most important renewable energy resources that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Various research works have been dedicated to biomass supply chain in the past decade as to continuously support the deployment of biomass resources for regional applications. Unit distributions, exhibiting inherent symmetrical properties, have been extensively studied across various fields. A significant challenge in these studies, particularly evident in parameter estimations, is the existence and uniqueness of estimators. Often, it is challenging to demonstrate the existence of a unique estimator. The major issue with maximum likelihood and other estimator-finding methods that use iterative methods is that they need an initial value to reach the solution. This dependency on initial values can lead to local extremes that fail to represent the global extremities, highlighting a lack of symmetry in solution robustness. This study applies a very simple, and unique, estimation method for unit Weibull and unit Burr XII distributions that both attain the global maximum value. Therefore, we can conclude that the findings from the obtained propositions demonstrate that both the maximum likelihood and graphical methods are symmetrically similar. The entrance and exit of loess tunnel are easily affected by freezing and thawing, which leads to collapse in cold regions. Based on the slip line network method, this paper proposed a graphical method and analyzed the impact of evaluation of freeze–thaw cycles on the collapse zone at the entrance and exit of a loess tunnel. Firstly, the slip line network method was improved for a graphical calculation program, and the program was validated by monitoring the data of collapse evolution in an unlined loess tunnel in situ. Then, some triaxial tests of freeze–thaw cycles were carried out on loess, and the attenuation law of loess strength was summarized after freeze–thaw cycles in cold regions. Finally, the graphical calculation program was applied to evaluate the impact of freeze–thaw cycles on collapse range in the unlined loess tunnel. The results show that introducing the classic slip line field into the analysis process of a tunnel collapse zone can provide a feasible and efficient analysis method for a tunnel surrounding rock collapse arch for tunnel engineering, and the collapse zone increases with the growing number of freeze–thaw cycles. A database consisting of 163 data on the uranium content and 234U/238U initial activity ratio of 15 Italian travertine and calcareous tufa sites was created using data from the relevant literature. Using a graphical method, data were interpreted considering the U geochemistry in natural environments as well as the geological, hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical settings of each site. The U content and 234U/238U initial activity ratio in travertine and tufa appear to be affected by different factors, such as the availability of U in the aquifer rocks, the redox state of the waters, and the alpha-active radionuclide recoil phenomenon. The data allow the identification of four groups of travertines/tufas: (i) those precipitated from circulating groundwater, with a short/fast flow path, in volcanic rocks with a high radionuclide content; (ii) those precipitated from circulating groundwater, with a long, deep flow path in carbonate/evaporite formations with a relatively low radionuclide content; and (iii) those precipitated from cold waters associated with riverine systems, which are characterized by oxidizing conditions and fed by high-discharge springs recharged by carbonate aquifers. The fourth group represents the intermediate situations frequently occurring due to the mixing of waters from different aquifers. The energy transition is a subject of significant interest in the countries of the European Union, and the involvement of public authorities is remarkable. Unlike previous energy transitions, this process is politically driven, the efforts of public authorities being secondary to the actions of companies whose guidelines are based on stability at the European level through strategies and directives. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current evolution of energy security status in the European Union and in Romania, with reference to global efforts to achieve climate neutrality through the energy transition. The historical method was used in the elaboration of the material, in order to outline the current energy security policies in terms of sustainability, both environmental and social. The logical method was used in order to emphasize the cause–effect relationship between economic processes in the energy sector. The use of bibliometric analysis demonstrated the importance of the topic of energy transition in scientific literature, but it also demonstrated the increasing interest of researchers in subjects related to energy security and energy poverty in the context of this new transition. By using the graphical method, statistic data and their evolution were highlighted in detail for the present study. The results of the articles are embodied in an approach that aims to focus on economic and social factors that determine the capacity of states to support the EU's independence from a single supplier in the current context of conflict. The authors conclude by anticipating massive challenges in achieving the environmental objectives of the European Green Deal, as well as by highlighting the issue of energy poverty as a social factor influencing global strategic decisions. The deformation force is an important factor affecting the forming accuracy of parts in the incremental forming process of sheet metal. This paper proposes an analytical calculation method of the deformation force based on pure shear deformation. After assuming and simplifying the factors affecting the deformation force, a graphical method is used to approximate the contact area between the forming tool and the sheet metal. A forming test is also designed. In addition, the deformation force is measured in the experiment, and its theoretical analysis value is compared with the actual measurement value of the forming test to validate the analytical method of deformation force calculation. The results show that the radial forming deviations are 28.5% and 22.5%, the axial deformation force deviations are 9.8% and 16.1%, and the forming force deviations are 6.3% and 10.3%, which demonstrates the effectiveness of using the analytical method to calculate the deformation force. Underground mining, including underground coal mining, is accompanied by accidents and fire hazards that pose a threat to the life safety of miners. The fire hazard increases with an increase in the mining depth. Currently, most accidents in coal mines are mine fires. The cost of eliminating mine fires is 80–95% of the cost of eliminating all accidents occurring at mining enterprises. Therefore, the problem of developing a new methodology for modeling the ventilation network parameters of the mine to increase the reliability of controlling the aerogas mode at the excavation site is very relevant. The comprehensive analysis and assessment of gas-dynamic processes in coalmines under study were carried out using the methods of probability theory and mathematical statistics. Spatial data were processed using spline interpolation in "gnuplot". As a result, a generalized expression for the transfer functions of coalmine objects, taking into account delays, was developed, including the description of dynamic properties of mining sites under various operating modes. The principal possibility of using a graphical method for estimating additional parameters of the sections of the ventilation system branches has been proved due to the alignment of their profiles at an equivalent distance relative to an arbitrary analogue. The improved method of spatial modeling was used to determine the gas-dynamic characteristics through additive gas-dynamic processes. The studies have been carried out and the method for managing the process of changing connections between devices (controllers–switches) of the technical system was developed in order to obtain greater reliability for safe mining. The soil-water retention curve (SWRC) is fundamental in presenting the hydromechanical characteristics of soils, which are closely connected with soil deformation, permeability, and shear strength. The Fredlund and Xing (FX) model accurately fits the SWRCs of different types of soils over a wide suction range. However, experimental comparisons of the fitting showed that the obtained parameters differ from the physical meanings assigned by Fredlund and Xing. To address this issue, the traditional FX model has been improved, resulting in the proposal of a two-step FX model. Firstly, the FX model is applied without taking the correction coefficient c(ψ) into account to fit the measured SWRC. The values for α, n, and m are then determined and substituted into the FX model to refit the experimental data. Finally, the last parameter Cr can be obtained. High-Frequency Pressure Fluctuation (HFPF) is an extensively observed hydraulic phenomenon in pumped-storage power stations and water conveyance projects. The investigation of the propagation characteristics of the pressure perturbation is of great significance for the safe operation of hydraulic facilities. In this study, a one-dimensional (1D)–three-dimensional (3D) coupling model is established based on the combination of the Method of Characteristics (MOC) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and implanted in the open source software OpenFOAM. The established model in this study implants the dynamic mesh module into the original OpenFOAM solver sonicLiquidFoam and presents the complete solution procedure of the CFD model with the dynamic mesh considered. The vibration of the pipe walls modeled by the mesh motion is employed to numerically generate the HFPF in the hydraulic system, which could not be implemented in the traditional MOC model. The independence of the pressure perturbation in the pipeline system is validated by the time-domain pressure variation. The graphical method is applied to describe the multiple reflection and superposition characteristics of the traveling wave in a simplified hydraulic system. Based on this, the mechanism of the superimposed characteristic of the traveling and standing pressure waves in the hydraulic system are analyzed, and the theoretical superimposed time-domain processes and the variations of the pressure oscillation magnitude are analyzed and presented. It is very well known that the use of a load-holding valve (LHV) in a hydraulic system introduces additional energy consumption. This article presented a simplified graphical method for analyzing the power requirements of hydraulic systems equipped with load-holding valves for overrunning load control. The method helps to understand the performance of load-holding valves during actuator movement. In addition, it allows visualization of the influence on the overall system consumption of the main parameters (pilot ratio, set pressure) and others such as flow rate, back pressure, and load force. The method is attractive because, with only the pressures at the three ports and the valve relief function curve, it is sufficient to evaluate the energy consumption and to define the power ratio as an index indicating the percentage of energy that is to be used to open the LHV valve. The method was applied to real cases, in particular to two types of lifting mobile machines. It was validated following several outdoor tests on two mobile machines where experimental data were obtained. During tests, both machines were equipped with a set of seven different performance LHV valves. The described method could be beneficial for hydraulic machine manufacturers engaged in designing lifting devices when selecting a suitable valve for energy efficiency applications, especially now that the trend towards electrification is a reality. The use of laser technology for materials processing has a wide applicability in various industrial fields, due to its proven advantages, such as processing time, economic efficiency and reduced impact on the natural environment. The expansion of laser technology has been possible due to the dynamics of research in the field. One of the directions of research is to establish the appropriate cutting parameters. The evolution of research in this direction can be deepened by determining the efficiency of laser cutting. Starting from such a hypothesis, the study contains an analysis of laser cutting parameters (speed, power and pressure) to determine the linear energy and cutting efficiency. For this purpose, the linear energy and the cutting efficiency were determined analytically, and the results obtained were tested with the Lagrange interpolation method, the statistical mathematical method and the graphical method. The material chosen was Hardox 400 steel with a thickness of 8 mm, due to its numerous industrial applications and the fact that it is an insufficiently studied material. Statistical data processing shows that the maximum cutting efficiency is mainly influenced by speed, followed by laser power. The results obtained reduce energy costs in manufacturing processes that use the CO2 laser. The combinations identified between laser speed and power lead to a reduction in energy consumption and thus to an increase in processing efficiency. Elastic materials include metal plates, rubber, foam, airbags and so on, which have a good buffer effect, toughness and strong recovery ability. In this paper, the deformation and thermal diffusion of 2 D and 3D thin plates are studied. Two models are established for the deformation of 2D thin plates. The bending deformation equation of rectangular and circular plates is derived, and the semi-analytical solution of the deflection function w (x , y) is found through the Fourier series approximation in the polar coordinate. The consistencies of the numerical solution and the theoretical solution are verified by numerical method. Then, we find that the factors affecting the deformation are related to the Young's modulus, load, plate length and deformation factor α of the material. In a separate temperature physics field, we establish a heat conduction model of 2 D graphene film. Three numerical schemes of the transient heat conduction equation of FDM-FEM are given. In contrast, this paper uses the implicit Euler method to discrete the time term. Furthermore, we compared the difference between the adiabatic condition and the convection condition by the graphical method and the curve trend. The results show that the temperature near the adiabatic boundary is higher. Finally, we proposed a 3D dynamic thermal–mechanical coupling model (3D-DTMCM) that has been established. A laser heating monocrystalline silicon sheet with periodic motion formula is given. The temperature radiation of the laser heat source has Gaussian distribution characteristics. Our proposed model can dynamically determine Young's modulus with a variable temperature. The numerical results show that the higher the temperature is, the higher the strain energy density of the plate is. In addition, the deformation amplitude of the plates in the coupling field is larger than that in the single mechanical field. Finally, we also discussed the stress field distribution of mixed cracks under high temperature and high load. In the current study, we present a novel intuitive graphical method for the simulation of nonlinear effects on stretched pulses, characterized by a large time-bandwidth product. By way of example, this method allows precise determination of effects occurring in CPA (chirped pulse amplification) laser chains, such as the pre-pulse generation by the nonlinear Kerr effect. This paper presents experimental and analytical work of which the main objective was to support the introduction of a new technology for the production of sewer pipes. In this technology, the pipes produced consist of two differently produced parts. The direct part uses conventional vibro press compacted concrete. In the curved part, on the other hand, self-compacting concrete technology is used. The cooperating company, Prefa Brno a.s., defined possible negative effects on concrete of sewer pipes. The task of the research team and now the author's team was to propose a procedure for the development of suitable self-compacting concrete variants and subsequently the design of a methodology to verify their durability in aqueous environments containing sulfates. To increase the efficiency of the development, the model mortar method was used in the experimental work. That is, instead of the original concrete, a model mortar derived from it was tested. The principle and procedure of derivation of model mortars are described in the paper. In total, eight variants of model mortars were tested, and at least three of them fulfilled the requirements. An optional but beneficial part of the carried out work was the derivation and practical application of the time-anchored-triangles-of-cracking graphical method developed during the research. Featured Application: A simplified graphical method is proposed to represent the generic connections among the mechanical units of the hybrid systems with the continuously variable units. An example with wider ratio coverage and higher torque capacity is provided. To increase the energy efficiency of road vehicles, an ideal transmission system should have a wide ratio coverage, a high torque capacity, and a high mechanical efficiency. Continuously variable units (CVUs) have been successfully implemented due to the smooth ratio variation, sufficient torque capacity, and ratio coverage. Hence, it will be beneficial to develop a hybrid powertrain comprising a CVU. In this paper, a design method called the "basic path diagram" (BPD) is proposed. It provides a simplified schematic of the system and represents the generic connections among the mechanical components. The system configurations synthesized by the BPD can be sorted according to three characteristics: Direction of power flows through the CVU, coupling pattern of the power inputs, and number of transmission paths parallel to the CVU. The first characteristic determines the number of times the CVU ratio coverage can be exploited, the second characteristic determines whether the torque of the power inputs can be independently controlled, and the third characteristic can help reduce the torque loading of the CVU. With the aid of a BPD, one of the possible system configurations is provided as an example. Tourism represents an important economic driver in Italy, being responsible for approximately 13.2% of the total GDP (a value higher than the reference European average) and for nearly 10% of the regional GDP. Among the touristic sectors, the agritourist ones show a persistent growth, experiencing in 2019 a 6.7 point percentage improvement compared to the 2017 figures. Given this situation, the transition towards a low-carbon path, affecting the building sector for some time, should also involve agritourist buildings, through the release of EU directives, member state laws, and technical rules. On the other hand, agritourism sites could be awarded the Community EU Ecolabel. Unfortunately, awarding the EU environmental excellence brand implies the availability of several data on building energy behavior that should then be managed by complex evaluation tools. To overcome this issue, the use of the simplified ARERA (Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy Networks and Environment) technical datasheets, issued to assess environmental improvements consequent to energy efficiency interventions in the urban residential building stock, is proposed. The application of this tool totally avoids using building computer-based simulation models, thus facilitating the preparation of the EU Ecolabel request documentation by agritourism owners. Being awarded the Community EU Ecolabel also implies approaching a net zero energy condition because of a lower energy consumption and a minor recourse to fossil fuels. For this purpose, an application of an easy graphical method, previously developed for residential and commercial buildings, which visually represents improvements achievable by a given agritourism when implementing energy efficiency measures, is presented. An IML-Resi PD-400 drilling tool with two types of spade drill bits (IML System GmbH, Wiesloch, Germany) was used to evaluate the internal conditions of 3 m wooden poles made from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Drilling tests were performed on poles that were industrially vacuum-pressure-impregnated with a copper-based preservative (Korasit KS-M) and untreated reference poles. Both types of poles were subject to 10.5 years of in-ground exposure. Wood moisture content (MC) was measured using a resistance-type moisture meter. MC varied between 15% and 60% in the radial and axial directions in both treated and untreated poles. A higher MC was detected in the underground, top, and outer (sapwood) parts of the poles. Typical drilling-resistance (DR) profiles of poles with internal defects were analyzed. Preservative treatment had a significant influence on wood durability in the underground part of the poles. Based on DR measurements, we found that untreated wood that was in contact with soil was severely degraded by insects and wood-destroying fungi. Conversely, treated wood generally showed no reduction in DR or feeding resistance (FR). DR profiling is a potential method for the in-situ or in vitro assessment and quality monitoring of preservative treatments and wood durability. The technological benefits of using drill bits with one major cutting edge, instead of standard drill bits with center-spiked tips and two major cutting edges, were not evident. A new graphical method was applied to present DR data and their spatial distribution in the poles. Future studies should focus on the impact of preservative treatments, thermal modification, and chemical modification on the DR and FR of wood. This paper presents timber lamella structures applied to the circular cylinder surface when all lamellae axes intersect at the nodes. To achieve the uniformity of all elements in this structure, the geometry of the structure must be carefully designed. The main methods for the research are graphical and numerical methods for geometric design and a prototype construction for a specific geometric pattern. The methods are discussed for their ease of replication, as well as the possibility of reinterpretation on other surfaces, while the prototype design and construction give insight into the process from design to execution. The combination of these methods allows for a thorough analysis of the geometry for lamella structures. The analysis shows that geometrical design must begin from the whole to the lamella, and that the number of element types in the structure depends on the disposition of the elements and the angle of the pattern. The discussion shows the advantages and limitations of the proposed methods, while the conclusions give the guidelines for the implementation of lamella structures into new design projects. Smart product service ecosystem (SPSE) has multi-level complexity. It is necessary to find a method to describe the hierarchical nested relationship and topological relationship of the structure of SPSE, so as to provide a systematic reference for the construction of industrial SPSE such as smart home and smart Internet-connected vehicle. Moreover, the explanatory ability of ecological service organization is insufficient, and there is a lack of accurate quantitative analysis and modeling tools. Therefore, this paper studies a survival system model and structural modeling for SPSE on sustainability using EVSM (eco-viable system model). In terms of case analysis, this paper applies the proposed methods and technologies to the structural modeling of smart home service ecosystem. The results show that EVSM model can intuitively analyze the nested hierarchical relationship of smart home service ecosystem through graphical method. Accurate traffic information, such as travel time, becomes more important since it could help provide more efficient traffic management strategies. This paper presents a method for estimating the travel time of segments on urban arterials by leveraging multi-source data from loop detectors and probe vehicles. Travel time is defined into three distinct sections based on floating car trajectories, i.e., accelerating, constant speed, and decelerating. Considering the traffic flow characteristics, different methods are developed using various data for each section. The proposed methodology is validated using field data collected in Shanghai, China. The results validated the proposed method with absolute percentage errors (APEs) of approximately 5% in constrained traffic flow conditions and 10–20% in less constrained traffic flow. The results also show that the proposed method has better performance than the method with loop detector data and another data fusion model. The given research employs high-resolution air quality monitoring and contemporary statistical methods to address gaps in understanding the urban air pollution in Pavlodar, a city with a significant industrial presence and promising touristic potential. Using mobile air quality sensors for detailed spatial data collection, the research aims to quantify concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ground-level ozone (O3); assess their distribution; and identify key influencing factors. In this study, we employed Geographic Information Systems (GISs) for spatial analysis, integrating multi-level B-spline interpolation to model spatial variability. Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were utilized to explore the relationships between variables, while regression analysis was conducted to quantify these relationships. These techniques were crucial for accurately mapping and interpreting spatial patterns and their underlying factors. The study identifies PM2.5 and NO2 as the primary contributors to air pollution in Pavlodar, with NO2 exceeding the 24 h threshold in 87.38% of locations and PM2.5 showing the highest individual air quality index (AQI) in 75.7% of cases. Correlation analysis reveals a positive association between PM2.5 and AQI and a negative correlation between NO2 and AQI, likely due to the dominant influence of PM2.5 in AQI calculations. Structural equation modeling (SEM) further underscores PM2.5 as the most significant impactor on AQI, while NO2 shows no significant direct impact. Humidity is positively correlated with AQI, though this relationship is context-specific to seasonal patterns observed in May. The sectoral analysis of landscape indices reveals weak correlations between the green space ratio (GSR) and air quality, indicating that while vegetation reduces pollutants, its impact is minimal due to urban planting density. The road ratio (RR) lacks sufficient statistical evidence to draw conclusions about its effect on air quality, possibly due to the methodology used. Spatial variability in pollutant concentrations is evident, with increasing PM2.5, PM10, and AQI towards the east-northeast, likely influenced by industrial activities and prevailing wind patterns. In contrast, NO2 pollution does not show a clear geographic pattern, indicating vehicular emissions as its primary source. Spatial interpolation highlights pollution hotspots near industrial zones, posing health risks to vulnerable populations. While the city's overall AQI is considered "moderate", the study highlights the necessity of implementing measures to improve air quality in Pavlodar. Evaluation of a recreational walking environment for the elderly is an essential method for planning intervention in constructing a walking environment. The Stated Preference method, discrete choice model, Spearman correlation analysis, and logistic regression model are used to build the evaluation index system of the leisure walking environment for the elderly and obtain its corresponding weight value. The study also explored the differences in preferences for recreational trails among older adults with different personal characteristics. It found that the Stated Preference method is a well-established method for evaluating the quality of recreational walking environments for older adults. Older walkers have shown a heightened sensitivity to certain factors, such as the degree of street shading, effective sidewalk width, street leveling, traffic volume, street interface openness, percentage of green interface, service facility density, and commercial storefront density. Understanding these sensitivities can help us design more empathetic and age-friendly walking environments. Among them, older adults with poorer health preferred street environment factors with less traffic, higher street leveling, and better service facilities. Quantitatively evaluating the recreational walking environment for the elderly provides a new way of thinking from a behavioral perspective to enhance its sustainability and age-friendliness. The concrete block pavement (CBP) system has a surface layer consisting of concrete block pavers and joint sand over a bedding sand layer. The non-homogeneous nature of the surface course of CBP, along with different laying patterns and shapes of block pavers, makes the analysis of CBP cumbersome. In this study, the surface course of CBP was modeled based on the slab action of the block pavers and joint sand, which are connected together in full contact. Four different laying patterns, including herringbone, stretcher, parquet, and square, were modeled using a finite element model. The elastic moduli of the block pavers varied from 2500 MPa to 45,000 MPa, with thicknesses ranging from 60 mm to 120 mm. As a result, modeling of CBP based on slab action can be considered a realistic strategy. In addition, a dataset was created based on quantitative inputs, e.g., elastic modulus and thickness of the block pavers, and qualitative input, i.e., block laying patterns. The approaches of machine learning adopted were support vector regression, Gaussian process regression, single-layer and deep artificial neural networks, and least squares boosting to implement prediction approach based on input and output. The analyses of statistical accuracy of all five machine learning methods showed high accuracy; however, the Gaussian process and deep artificial neural network methods resulted in the most accurate outputs and are recommended for further studies. Based on the machine learning models, digitalization is achieved through the development of simple, user-friendly software for electronic devices in order to perform a preliminary analysis of different laying patterns of CBP. Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) is currently the preferred method for monitoring left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in cancer patients receiving potentially cardiotoxic anti-neoplastic therapy. In Denmark, however, the traditional standard for LVEF monitoring has been rooted in nuclear medicine departments utilizing equilibrium radionuclide angiography (ERNA). Although ERNA remains a principal modality, there is an emerging trend towards the adoption of echocardiography for this purpose. Given this context, assessing the reproducibility of 3DE among non-specialized medical personnel is crucial for its clinical adoption in such departments. To assess the feasibility of 3DE for LVEF measurements by technologists, we evaluated the repeatability and reproducibility of two moderately experienced technologists. They performed 3DE on 12 volunteers over two sessions, with a collaborative review of the results from the first session before the second session. Two-way intraclass correlation values increased from 0.03 to 0.77 across the sessions. This increase in agreement was mainly due to the recognition of false low measurements. Our findings underscore the importance of incorporating reproducibility exercises in the context of 3DE, especially when operated by technologists. Additionally, routine control of the acquisitions by physicians is deemed necessary. Ensuring these hurdles are adequately managed enables the adoption of 3DE for LVEF measurements by technologists. From time to time, a series of unpredictable and conflicting contingencies can lead to angular instability of the power system and even blackouts if not adequately handled by an out-of-step (OOS) protection system. The key contribution of this research work, to the theory of out-of-step protection, is the identification and isolation after a given disruption of many unstable swings. This paper presents a proposed method to avoid false operation for distance function by out-of-step blocking to improve the system stability by using optimally placed PMUs for the fast detection of system analogue quantities. The studies were performed on a modified Eskom transmission network in the Western Cape with 765 kV and 400 kV voltage levels. The aim is to investigate the IEC 61850-90-5 standard for predictive dynamic stability maintaining systems using PMUs for out-of-step conditions of synchronous generators. The power system modelling and simulation are performed in the RSCAD-FX for the proposed multi-area power system network. An experimental lab-scale implementation is built to test the proposed out-of-step algorithm in a real-time digital simulator. In deep excavation engineering, the implementation of cut-off walls stands as a crucial measure to ensure structural support stability. However, the existing theories for dewatering design often overlook the variations in cut-off wall penetration depths, potentially compromising the efficacy of groundwater control strategies. Addressing this gap, this study conducts a comprehensive investigation into the dynamics of groundwater levels within confined aquifers during the dewatering process of strip excavation pits with cut-off walls. Central to this inquiry is the conceptualization of the entire excavation pit as a singular large-diameter well, with the open part beneath the cut-off wall in the confined aquifer serving as a constant-flux boundary. Employing an advanced analytical modeling approach, the study formulates a robust framework to describe the intricate interplay of unsteady groundwater flow phenomena. Leveraging the techniques of the Laplace and finite cosine transform methods, a semi-analytical solution is derived to elucidate groundwater drawdown patterns over time. The validation of the proposed solution against finite element method results underscores its fidelity and applicability. The parametric analysis reveals a dynamic evolution in drawdown characteristics within the confined aquifer, transitioning from initially cone-shaped distributions to more linear profiles that eventually stabilize with prolonged dewatering. This evolution is governed by the aquifer's inherent anisotropy and the barrier effect exerted by the depth of cut-off wall penetration. The parametric research also underscores the critical role of lateral boundary distance in influencing groundwater drawdown patterns. The presented solutions can be used to identify optimal penetration depth ratios tailored to specific parameters, thereby offering insights for optimizing dewatering strategies for deep excavation groundwater control. Moreover, a case study was included in this study using the proposed analytical solution, and a comparison was made with field data to validate the practical applicability of the approach. Ground settlement resulting from consolidation may lead to tilted buildings, cracks in the pavement, damage to underground utilities, etc. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the consolidation behaviors (including primary consolidation and secondary compression) of the soil of the subgrade. There is a large amount of soft clay deposited in Nanjing, located in the Yangtze River Basin. The consolidation behavior of Nanjing soft clay can significantly affect foundation design and the cost of construction. In this study, experimental measurements of the consolidation behavior of Nanjing soft clay were conducted, and parameters (such as pre-consolidation pressure, secondary consolidation index and secondary consolidation ratio) related to consolidation were assessed. The concept of simulated over-consolidation ratio (OCRs) was proposed, and the close relationship between primary consolidation and secondary compression settlement and the OCRs of Nanjing clay was investigated. This study describes the prevalent sedimentological and geochemical patterns and investigates the environmental status of the bottom of Gialova lagoon, a highly vulnerable coastal site of the EU's Natura 2000 network. For this task, lithological, geochemical, and microfaunal analyses of sediment samples were combined with a high-resolution bathymetric survey. Potential pollution was determined using geochemical-based (EF, I-geo, and PLI) and faunal (Foram-AMBI) indices. We find that sedimentation is mainly controlled by the bottom morphology, hydrodynamic variations, and biogenic productivity of the lagoon. The application of the multivariate factor analysis technique revealed four dominant factors explaining the geochemical processes occurring in the lagoon. The first factor, namely "terrigenous aluminosilicates associated with Corg vs. autochthonous biogenic carbonates", discriminates the deposition of detrital sediments, related to the high adsorption of heavy metals—versus bioclastic sediments. The "sulfides" factor represents an anoxic phase of the lagoon floor, whereas the "Mn-oxyhydroxides" factor indicates increased manganese content with several compounded trace elements. The "phosphate" factor reveals multiple sources of phosphorus in the lagoon. The lagoon bottom shows negligible to minor contamination in heavy metals, except Mo and Pb, which induce moderate pollution levels. The over-exploitation of groundwater and the deterioration of its quality have heightened the importance of non-traditional water resources, such as mine water. The study of the water's chemical characteristics and the formation mechanism of high-salinity mine water in semi-arid regions holds significant importance for zero discharge and the resource utilization of mine water in Northwest China. In this study, a total of 38 groundwater and mine water samples were collected to examine the hydrogeochemical characteristics of high-salinity mine water using Piper diagrams and Gibbs diagrams, as well as isotope analyses and ion ratio coefficients. Additionally, the corresponding mine water treatment recommendations were put forward. The results show that the TDS content of groundwater increases with hydrographic depth. The average TDS concentration of Quaternary, Luohe, and Anding groundwater is 336.87, 308.67, and 556.29 mg/L, respectively. However, the TDS concentration of Zhiluo groundwater and mine water is 2768.57 and 3826.40 mg/L, respectively, which belong to high-salinity water. The Quaternary, Luohe, and Anding groundwater hydrochemical type is predominantly HCO3-Ca type, and the Zhiluo groundwater and mine water hydrochemical type is predominantly the SO4-Na type. Furthermore, there is minimal difference observed in δD and δ18O values among these waters. It can be inferred that the Zhiluo Formation in groundwater serves as the primary source of mine water supply, primarily influenced by the processes of concentration caused by evaporation. The high salinity of mine water is closely related to the high salinity of Zhiluo groundwater. The high salinity of groundwater has evolved gradually under the control of the concentration caused by evaporation and rock-weathering processes. The dissolution of salt rock, gypsum, along with other minerals, serves as the material basis for high-salinity groundwater formation. In addition, the evolution of major ions is also affected by cation exchange. The TDS concentration of mine water ranges from 3435.4 mg/L to 4414.3 mg/L, and the combined treatment process of nanofiltration and reverse osmosis can be selected to remove the salt. Proper nutrition during childhood is crucial for preventing chronic diseases and ensuring optimal growth. This study aimed to develop and validate the Korean version of the KIDMED (K-KIDMED) questionnaire to accurately measure Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence among Korean children and adolescents. A total of 226 parents, representing their children and adolescents, completed the K-KIDMED, a 112-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and a 24-h dietary recall method through an anonymous online survey. The K-KIDMED comprised 11 questions, with five excluded from the original scoring as they did not apply to the FFQ. Scores were categorized into three levels of adherence to the MD: low (1 or less), average (2–4), and good (5 or more). The agreement between total MD scores from the Korean version of the Mediterranean diet adherence screener and the FFQ was moderate (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.455, 95% confidence interval: 0.346, 0.553). Among the 226 children and adolescents, 36.7% had low adherence to the KIDMED, 43.3% had intermediate adherence, and 19.9% had good adherence. Higher K-KIDMED scores were correlated with greater intakes of fiber, vitamin K, vitamin B6, and potassium (all p < 0.05).
