The main goal of the current work was to assess the age sensitivity of a novel battery of cool and hot Executive Function (EF) tasks developed for the middle childhood period: the Executive Brain Battery (EBB). To this end, we carried out a first study in which the EBB was administered to six age groups ranging from 6 to 11. Additionally, in a second study, we compared children at the end of middle childhood (age 11 years) and adult performance in the EBB. Results showed that tasks included in the EBB were suitable for all age groups, with more age-related changes being found in cool than hot EF tasks. Moreover, at the end of middle childhood, children reach an adult-like performance in most of these cool and hot tasks. The present findings extend previous research suggesting that cool and hot EFs exhibit different patterns of age-related growth in middle childhood. Additionally, the EEB could become a useful tool for research on EFs during middle childhood that could be adapted for a wide range of populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of seawater for mining purposes in Chile has progressively increased in recent years as fast as the interest on the negative effects of biofouling on the inner part of pipelines used to transport seawater. To prevent biofouling, chemical antifouling compounds are traditionally used, thus, causing negative environmental impacts. The aim of this research has, therefore, been to evaluate the efficiency of static magnetic fields (SMF) generators to mitigate the biofouling. Hence, experimental activities have been conducted on high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes equipped with neodymium magnets during two experimental periods in the year of 2019, i.e., autumn–winter (A–W) and spring–summer (S–S), and under two types of SMF, i.e., continuous-type (PCS) and pulse-type (PPS). Physicochemical parameters and cell viability of microorganisms composing the biofilm were investigated. Metagenomic analyses on biofilm were conducted as well. The results showed that the cell viability was the highest, i.e., 757,780 cells/cm2, during S–S and the lowest, i.e., 349,151 cells/cm2, in A–W, both under PCS. In S–S, as well as A–W, biofilm was characterized for the most abundant eukaryotic operational taxonomic units (OTUs) under PPS conditions. The presence of OTUs, such as Articiflavibacter spp., Chaetonotida spp. and Desmodorida spp., was observed only from SMF tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last few years, magnetic nanowires have gained attention due to their potential implementation as building blocks in spintronics applications and, in particular, in domain-wall- based devices. In these devices, the control of the magnetic properties is a must. Cylindrical magnetic nanowires can be synthesized rather easily by electrodeposition and the control of their magnetic properties can be achieved by modulating the composition of the nanowire along the axial direction. In this work, we report the possibility of introducing changes in the composition along the radial direction, increasing the degrees of freedom to harness the magnetization. In particular, we report the synthesis, using template-assisted deposition, of FeNi (or Co) magnetic nanowires, coated with a Au/Co (Au/FeNi) bilayer. The diameter of the nanowire as well as the thickness of both layers can be tuned at will. In addition to a detailed structural characterization, we report a preliminary study on the magnetic properties, establishing the role of each layer in the global collective behavior of the system. The structural and surface changes undergone by the different precursors that are produced during the synthesis of imogolite are reported. The surface changes that occur during the synthesis of imogolite were determined by electrophoretic migration (EM) measurements, which enabled the identification of the time at which the critical precursor of the nanoparticles was generated. A critical parameter for understanding the evolution of these precursors is the isoelectric point (IEP), of which variation revealed that the precursors modify the number of active ≡Al-OH and ≡Si-OH sites during the formation of imogolite. We also found that the IEP is displaced to a higher pH level as a consequence of the surface differentiation that occurs during the synthesis. At the same time, we established that the pH of the reaction (pHrx) decreases with the evolution and condensation of the precursors during aging. Integration of all of the obtained results related to the structural and surface properties allows an overall understanding of the different processes that occur and the products that are formed during the synthesis of imogolite. The present study had three main aims: (1) to explore the possible relationships between the two dimensions of negative symptoms (NS) with the three frontal behavioral syndromes (dorsolateral, orbitofrontal and the anterior or mesial cingulate circuit) in patients with schizophrenia; (2) to determine the influence of sociodemographic and clinical variables on the severity of the two dimensions of NS (expressive deficits and disordered relationships/avolition); and (3) to explore the possible relationships between the two dimensions of NS and social functioning. We evaluated a group of 33 patients with schizophrenia with a predominance of NS using the self-reported version of the Frontal System Behavior scale. To quantify the severity of NS, the Assessment of Negative Symptoms (SANS) scale was used. The results revealed that the two dimensions of NS correlate positively with the behavioral syndrome of dorsolateral prefrontal origin. Regarding the influence of sociodemographic and clinical variables, in patients with a long evolution the NS of the expressive deficits dimension were less severe than in patients with a short evolution. A negative correlation was found between the severity of NS of the disordered relationships/avolition dimension and perceived social functioning. Our results show the importance of differentiating between the two dimensions of NS to characterize better their possible frontal etiology and impact on clinical course and social functioning. Phase Entropy (PhEn) was recently introduced for evaluating the nonlinear features of physiological time series. PhEn has been demonstrated to be a robust approach in comparison to other entropy-based methods to achieve this goal. In this context, the present study aimed to analyze the nonlinear features of raw electrohysterogram (EHG) time series collected from women at the third trimester of pregnancy (TT) and later during term active parturition (P) by PhEn. We collected 10-min longitudinal transabdominal recordings of 24 low-risk pregnant women at TT (from 35 to 38 weeks of pregnancy) and P (>39 weeks of pregnancy). We computed the second-order difference plots (SODPs) for the TT and P stages, and we evaluated the PhEn by modifying the k value, a coarse-graining parameter. Our results pointed out that PhEn in TT is characterized by a higher likelihood of manifesting nonlinear dynamics compared to the P condition. However, both conditions maintain percentages of nonlinear series higher than 66%. We conclude that the nonlinear features appear to be retained for both stages of pregnancy despite the uterine and cervical reorganization process that occurs in the transition from the third trimester to parturition. Variable new antigen receptor domain (vNAR) antibodies are novel, naturally occurring antibodies that can be isolated from naïve, immune or synthetic shark libraries. These molecules are very interesting to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries because of their unique characteristics related to size and tissue penetrability. There have been some approved anti-angiogenic therapies for ophthalmic conditions, not related to vNAR. This includes biologics and chimeric proteins that neutralize vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)165, which are injected intravitreal, causing discomfort and increasing the possibility of infection. In this paper, we present a vNAR antibody against human recombinant VEGF165 (rhVEGF165) that was isolated from an immunized Heterodontus francisci shark. A vNAR called V13, neutralizes VEGF165 cytokine starting at 75 μg/mL in an in vitro assay based on co-culture of normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs) and green fluorescence protein (GFP)-labeled human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cells. In the oxygen-induced retinopathy model in C57BL/6:Hsd mice, we demonstrate an endothelial cell count decrease. Further, we demonstrate the intraocular penetration after topical administration of 0.1 μg/mL of vNAR V13 by its detection in aqueous humor in New Zealand rabbits with healthy eyes after 3 h of application. These findings demonstrate the potential of topical application of vNAR V13 as a possible new drug candidate for vascular eye diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
