Understanding the external load, particularly the peak demands (PDs), experienced by players is essential. Several factors, such as the playing time, team venue, score outcome, and match nature, can influence basketball performance. Accelerometry-based methods allow for the estimation of the load borne by athletes and the peaks they reach. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of these factors on PDs across different time windows (30 s, 1 min, and 3 min). Eleven national-level athletes were monitored during 29 matches using measurement devices. Inertial movement units were used to measure peak PlayerLoad™ (PL) across any time window. Mixed linear models were used to compare the groups, and effect size was calculated to quantify the differences. Significant differences (p < 0.05, small effects) were found between occasional players (who play fewer minutes) and core players (who play intermediate minutes), with the latter reaching higher PDs, though with small effect sizes. Core players also reached higher PDs than top players (who play the most minutes), but the differences were not significant (p > 0.05, trivial effects). In summary, core players reach higher external PDs during competition compared to occasional players, while other contextual factors did not show a significant influence on external PDs. Cannibalism is a behavior that different species of fish exhibit in the early stages of their life, and it has been widely reported. In Tabasco, Mexico, the ancestral species Atractosteus tropicus is farmed, which is a freshwater fish with a high nutritional and economic value. This species exhibits high cannibalistic behavior both in its larval and juvenile stages, which considerably decreases its production. Therefore, strategies have been developed to mitigate the effects of this behavior. One of them is the placement of shelters (rocks and artificial vegetation), which allow the vulnerable population to protect themselves from cannibals. The goal of this work is to study the effect of shelters on the cannibalistic behavior of the A. tropicus population through a mathematical model. The population is divided into two classes, the vulnerable population (prey) and the cannibal population (predator). Moreover, a system of ordinary differential equations is established, which is analyzed, and sufficient conditions for the coexistence of the two species are shown. Residual rights are the right to choose asset uses not specified in the contract. They are essential in situations of uncertainty. The current energy transition presents a greater variety of assets. Moreover, it is impossible to anticipate all relevant states that the assets and the environment can embody, making it impossible to optimize them contractually. Furthermore, there is consensus that the transition must occur quickly, which means high levels of investment in new specific assets. How should we distribute property rights to maximize social benefits in a context with specific and dispersed assets? Because of the complementarity between network and distributed resources, this article questions the premise that deverticalization is invariably beneficial to consumers and argues for the need to revise the concept of network and develop the regulatory implications of such a reconceptualization. We defend the need to evaluate alternative network concepts considering the technological repertoire available to operationalize them. When considering the technological repertoire available today, characterized by the competitiveness of information and communications technology (ICT) and distributed resources, we should recognize the inherently incomplete nature of the contracts signed between network operators and users. Simple Summary: Microorganisms isolated from the intestinal microbiota of fish have demonstrated probiotic effects. Considering their beneficial impact on aquaculture, it is essential to develop feeding strategies that ensure the growth and health of aquaculture animals using isolated strains from fish. This study evaluated the effects of the administration of Lactococcus lactis PH3-05, a probiotic bacterium isolated from tropical gar adults (Atractosteus tropicus), on the growth, survival, digestion, intestinal morphology, gene expression, and intestinal microbiota of larvae of the same species. The results showed that supplementation with L. lactis PH3-05 significantly improved growth, survival, and digestive enzyme activity. In addition, this supplementation stimulated the expression of genes associated with the mucosal barrier and the anti-inflammatory response. Although no significant changes were observed in the overall composition of the intestinal microbiota, an increase in the abundance of Lactobacillus was recorded in the group treated with L. lactis. These findings suggest that L. lactis has potential as an indigenous probiotic to improve the health and growth of tropical gar larvae and could be implemented for native species of the region. Probiotics in aquaculture hold promise for enhancing fish health and growth. Due to their increased specificity and affinity for their host, indigenous probiotics may offer isolated and potentially amplified benefits. This study investigated the effects of Lactococcus lactis PH3-05, previously isolated from adults of tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus), on the growth, survival, digestive enzyme activity, intestinal morphology, expression of barrier and immune genes, and intestinal microbiota composition in the larvae of tropical gar. Larvae were fed with live L. lactis PH3-05 concentrations of 104, 106, and 108 CFU/g for 15 days alongside a control diet without probiotics. Higher concentrations of L. lactis PH3-05 (106 and 108 CFU/g) positively influenced larval growth, increasing hepatocyte area and enterocyte height. The 106 CFU/g dose significantly enhanced survival (46%) and digestive enzyme activity. Notably, the 108 CFU/g dose stimulated increased expression of muc-2 and il-10 genes, suggesting enhanced mucosal barrier function and anti-inflammatory response. Although L. lactis PH3-05 did not significantly change the diversity, structure, or Phylum level composition of intestinal microbiota, which was constituted by Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Chloroflexi, and Firmicutes, an increase in Lactobacillus abundance was observed in fish fed with 106 CFU/g, suggesting enhanced probiotic colonization. These results demonstrate that administering L. lactis PH3-05 at 106 CFU/g promotes growth, survival, and digestive health in A. tropicus larvae, establishing it as a promising indigenous probiotic candidate for aquaculture applications. Annona cherimola is noted for its bioactive compounds, particularly diterpenes called ent-kaurenes, which exhibit various biological activities. This study focused on evaluating the ability of ent-kaurenes from Annona cherimola to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) and topoisomerase (TOP) enzymes. Researchers used solvent-free lipophilic eluates (SFLEs) from the plant in enzymatic assays and a yeast model. The major compounds in SFLE were identified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and in silico studies explored their inhibition mechanisms. SFLE showed significant inhibition of COX-II (95.44%) and COX-I (75.78%) enzymes and fully inhibited the yeast strain. The effectiveness of inhibition is attributed to the compounds' structural diversity, lipophilicity, and molecular weight. Two main compounds, kauran-16-ol and isopimaral, were identified, with in silico results suggesting that they inhibit COX-II by blocking peroxidase activity and COX-I by interacting with the membrane-binding region. Additionally, these compounds allosterically and synergistically inhibit TOP-II and potentially sensitize cancer cells by interacting with key amino acids. This paper presents an analysis of different despeckling filters applied on both synthetically corrupted optical images and actual Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. Several authors use optical images as ground truth and then the images are corrupted by using a Gamma model to simulate the speckle, while other approaches use methods like multitemporal fusion to generate a ground truth using actual SAR images, which provides a result somehow equivalent to the one from the common multi look technique. Well-known filters, like local, and non-local and some of them based on artificial intelligence and deep learning, are applied to these two types of images and their performance is assessed by a quantitative analysis. One last validation is performed with a newly proposed method by using ratio images, resulting from the mathematical division (Hadamard division) of filtered and noisy images, to measure how similar the initial and the remaining speckle are by considering its Gamma distribution and divergence measurement. Our findings suggest that despeckling models relying on artificial intelligence exhibit notable efficiency, albeit concurrently displaying inflexibility when applied to particular image types based on the training dataset. Additionally, our experiments underscore the utility of the divergence measurement in ratio images in facilitating both visual inspection and quantitative evaluation of residual speckles within the filtered images. Background: women aging is a normal process of life; however, hormonal changes create an imbalance between prooxidants and antioxidants and could be measured as the antioxidant capability (AC) of an organism. Objective: to find the association between plasma AC levels, dietary intakes, and body composition in 18–64-year-old women living in the northeast of Mexico. Methods: A total of n = 514 women (18–64 years old) were grouped according to STRAW criteria as reproductive, menopausal transition, and postmenopausal. Anthropometrics, body mass index (BMI), weight–hip ratio (WHR), and weight–height ratio WHtR were determined, and percentage of body fat was analyzed by bioelectrical impedance. Dietary intake of macronutrients and vitamins A, E, and C were analyzed by a 3-day food recall. The AC status in plasma was analyzed by the ORACFL assay. Results: Plasma AC levels were higher in postmenopausal women (815 µmol TE/L), and menopausal transition women (806 µmol TE/L) than in reproductive women (633 µmol TE/L). BMI was overweight (>25 kg/m2) in all three groups. WHtR and WHR are above the healthy limit of 0.5 and 0.8, respectively for both menopausal transition and postmenopausal women. In reproductive women, negative relationships were calculated between plasma AC and age (Rho = −0.250, p = 0.007), BMI (Rho = −0.473, p < 0.001), WHtR (Rho = −0.563, p < 0.001), WHR (Rho = −0.499, p < 0.001), and % body fat (Rho = −0.396, p < 0.001). A negative association was determined between plasma AC and WHtR in reproductive women (B = −2.718, p = 0.026). No association resulted for those in menopausal transition, and a positive association was obtained between plasma AC and protein (B = 0.001, p = 0.024) and vitamin E (B = 0.003, p = 0.013) intakes in postmenopausal women. Conclusions: the antioxidant capability (AC) in plasma was lower in reproductive women, and anthropometric parameters marking decreased physical fitness were associated with decreased AC. Fish possess lipases from embryonic development to adulthood. Lipase activity methods vary and significantly differ in terms of the concentration of the substrate used, bile salt, Ca2+, temperature, pH, and type of lipase units, which limits comparative studies. The three most-used substrates are p-nitrophenyl (p-NP), β-naphthyl (β-N) derivates, and emulsified natural oils. These were selected to be redesigned in this study to measure lipase activity under temperature, pH, ion, and bile salt conditions closer to fish physiology, using the appropriate molar absorption coefficient to calculate the lipase units. Cynoscion parvipinnis (CP), Seriola rivoliana (SR), Centropomus viridis (CV), Elop affinis (EA), and Canthidermis maculate (CM) pyloric caeca-intestine extracts were studied. Sodium taurocholate showed the highest activity for intestinal lipases, and the fatty acid length in the substrates changed the lipase hydrolysis rate. The highest lipase activity was obtained with p-NP butyrate and p-NP caprylate in four fish species. Lipase activity was highly activated with Ca2+ (4–7 mM). The β-N absorption spectrum indicates a plateau between 534 and 554 nm for fish lipases. Salmon oil was identified as the most digestible lipid in the four fish species using the in vitro digestibility assay. The lipase zymogram showed an apparent size of 46.3 kDa for CP, 40.2 kDa for SR, 46.2 kDa for CM, 106.6 kDa for EA, and 58.3, 84.6, and 162.1 kDa for CV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cloudy conditions at a local scale pose a significant challenge for forecasting renewable energy generation through photovoltaic panels. Consequently, having real-time knowledge of sky conditions becomes highly valuable. This information could inform decision-making processes in system operations, such as determining whether conditions are favorable for activating a standalone system requiring a minimum level of radiation or whether sky conditions might lead to higher energy consumption than generation during adverse cloudy conditions. This research leveraged convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transfer learning (TL) classification techniques, testing various architectures from the EfficientNet family and two ResNet models for classifying sky images. Cross-validation methods were applied across different experiments, where the most favorable outcome was achieved with the EfficientNetV2-B1 and EfficientNetV2-B2 models boasting a mean Accuracy of 98.09%. Quercetin (Q) dietary supplements exhibit poor oral bioavailability because of degradation throughout gastrointestinal digestion (GD), which may be overcome using mesoporous silica particles (MSPs) as an oral delivery system (ODS). This study aimed to elucidate the effect of the functionalization of MSPs with amine-(A-MSP), carboxyl-(C-MSP), or thiol-(T-MSP) groups on their efficiency as a quercetin ODS (QODS). The type and degree of functionalization (DF) were used as factors in an experimental design. The Q-loaded F-MSP (F-MSP/Q) was characterized by gas physisorption analysis, loading capacity (LC), and dynamic light scattering and kinetics of Q release at gastric and intestinal pHs. Antioxidant capacity and Q concentration of media containing F-MSP/Q were evaluated after simulated GD. A-MSP showed the highest LC (19.79 ± 2.42%). C-MSP showed the lowest particle size at pH 1.5 or 7.4 (≈200 nm). T-MSP exhibited the maximum Q release at pH 7.4 (11.43%). High DF of A-MSP increased Q retention, regardless of pH. A-MSP preserved antioxidant capacity of Q-released gastric media (58.95 ± 3.34%). Nonetheless, MSP and F-MSP did not protect antioxidant properties of Q released in intestinal conditions. Laser cladding (LC) is a versatile additive manufacturing process where strands of metallic material are deposited and melted by a laser. However, there are some limitations associated with this process that may affect the performance of the final manufactured parts. In the present work, the influence of laser shock peening (LSP) on the fatigue life of 304 stainless steel flat specimens with a cobalt-based alloy (Stellite 6) coating applied by LC was investigated. The analysis was carried out both experimentally and numerically. In the LSP simulation, the ABAQUS/Explicit code was used to determine the residual stress distribution of specimens with double central notches with a radius of curvature of 5, 10, 15, and 20 mm. From the numerical results, an improvement was found regarding fatigue life up to 48% in samples with LSP. Experimentally, 14% in fatigue life enhancement was observed. The residual stress, determined by the contour method, showed good agreement with the LSP simulation. The SEM images revealed that the fatigue failure started at the Stellite 6 coating and propagated towards the center of the specimen. LSP has been shown to be a suitable postprocessing alternative for laser-cladded parts that will be subjected to fatigue loading since it led to fatigue improvement through the introduction of compressive residual stresses on clad coatings. The increasing demand for innovative approaches in wound healing and skin regeneration has prompted extensive research into advanced biomaterials. This review focuses on showcasing the unique properties of sustainable silk-based particulate systems in promoting the controlled release of pharmaceuticals and bioactive agents in the context of wound healing and skin regeneration. Silk fibroin and sericin are derived from well-established silkworm production and constitute a unique biocompatible and biodegradable protein platform for the development of drug delivery systems. The controlled release of therapeutic compounds from silk-based particulate systems not only ensures optimal bioavailability but also addresses the challenges associated with conventional delivery methods. The multifaceted benefits of silk proteins, including their inherent biocompatibility, versatility, and sustainability, are explored in this review. The Canary Islands are considered a hotspot of biodiversity and have high levels of endemicity, including endemic reptile species. Nowadays, some invasive alien species of reptiles are proliferating with no control in different parts of the territory, creating a dangerous situation for the ecosystems of this archipelago. Despite the fact that the regional authorities have initiated actions to try to control the proliferation of invasive species, the problem has not been solved as it depends on sporadic sightings, and it is impossible to determine when these species appear. Since no studies for automatically identifying certain species of reptiles endemic to the Canary Islands have been found in the current state-of-the-art, from the Signals and Communications Department of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria University (ULPGC), we consider the possibility of developing a detection system based on automatic species recognition using deep learning (DL) techniques. So this research conducts an initial identification study of some species of interest by implementing different neural network models based on transfer learning approaches. Adaptive optics (AO) is a technique with an important role in image correction on ground-based telescopes through the deployment of specific optical instruments and various control methodologies. The synergy between these instruments and control techniques is paramount for capturing sharper and more accurate images. This technology also plays a crucial role in other applications, including power and information systems, where it compensates for thermal distortion caused by radiation. The integration of neural networks into AO represents a significant step towards achieving optimal image clarity. Leveraging the learning potential of these models, researchers can amplify control strategies to counteract atmospheric distortions effectively. Neural networks in AO not only produce results on par with conventional systems but also proffer benefits in cost-efficiency and streamlined implementation. This study explored the effects of a modular overground exoskeleton on plantar pressure distribution in healthy individuals and individuals with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The research involved 21 participants, including ABI patients and healthy controls, who used a unique exoskeleton with adaptable modular configurations. The primary objective was to assess how these configurations, along with factors such as muscle strength and spasticity, influenced plantar pressure distribution. The results revealed significant differences in plantar pressures among participants, strongly influenced by the exoskeleton's modularity. Notably, significant distinctions were found between ABI patients and healthy individuals. Configurations with two modules led to increased pressure in the heel and central metatarsus regions, whereas configurations with four modules exhibited higher pressures in the metatarsus and hallux regions. Future research should focus on refining and customizing rehabilitation technologies to meet the diverse needs of ABI patients, enhancing their potential for functional recovery. This paper presents a methodology to detect the coastal erosion and progradation effects in the 'Atrato River' delta, located in the Gulf of Urabá in Colombia, using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images. Erosion is the physical–mechanical loss of the soil that affects its functions and ecosystem services while producing a reduction in its productive capacity. Progradation is the deposition of layers in the basinward direction while moving coastward. Other studies have investigated these two phenomena using optical images, encountering difficulties due to the persistent presence of clouds in this region. In order to avoid the cloud effects, in this study, we used 16 Sentinel 1 SAR images with two different polarizations between 2016 and 2023. First, each image was rescaled from 0 to 255, then the image was despeckled by a deep learning (DL) model. Afterwards, a single RGB image was composed with the filtered polarizations. Next, a classifier with 99% accuracy based on Otsu's method was used to determine whether each pixel was water or not. Then, the classified image was registered to a reference one using Oriented FAST and Rotated BRIEF (ORB) descriptor. Finally, a multitemporal analysis was performed by comparing every image to the previous one to identify the studied phenomena, calculating areas. Also, all images were integrated to obtain a heatmap that showed the overall changes across eight years (2016–2023) in a single image. The multitemporal analysis performed found that the newly created mouth is the most active area for these processes, coinciding with other studies. In addition, a comparison of these findings with the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) showed a relative delayed coupling to the erosion process and a coupling of progradation with dry and wet seasons. This study explores the spatial and temporal distribution of beach litter accumulation rates at seven sites in Cadiz Bay, Southwest Spain, during October 2022 (i.e., autumn) and March 2023 (i.e., spring). Beach litter was collected during low tide conditions at the strandline during two series of 10 consecutive daily surveys. The main aim of this paper is to comprehensively analyze the influence of seasonality and hydrodynamic and wind patterns on litter abundance and composition. In October, 4199 items (22.58 kg) were recorded, increasing to 4634 items (22.68 kg) in March. Overall, the average litter abundance remained relatively consistent but notable variations were observed at different beach locations. Plastic litter was the most abundant in the total litter amount with 71.13% and 88.39% in October and March, respectively. Litter categories increased from 90 to 107 from October to March and the top 10 litter categories included cigarette butts (1746 in autumn and 514 in spring), plastic fragments (985 and 339) and plastic packaging (297 and 211). Statistical analyses showed no significant seasonal impact on litter quantities but confirmed seasonal variations in litter types. For instance, cigarette butts were more abundant in October, i.e., in autumn, as they are linked to the intensive use of beaches during the summer period (June–September), while wet wipes were prevalent in March, i.e., in spring, because they are associated with an increase in wastewater and river discharges recorded during the late autumn and winter months (November–February). No clear correlations were found between litter quantity and wave height, but specific patterns emerged at exposed and sheltered beaches. The findings provide valuable insights for optimizing coastal clean-up efforts with customized strategies. Corona treatment (CT), a surface treatment widely used in the plastic industry, can be used to alter the properties of cassava starch. In the present work, CT was performed on dry granular starch (DS), water-suspended humid granular starch (HS), and gelatinized starch (GS). Different properties and structural characteristics of treated starches were studied. A lowering in pH was generally observed after CT and the rheological properties depended on the starch presentation. A reinforcement of DS and HS samples after CT was deduced from higher viscosity values in flow assays and viscoelastic moduli, but weak gels were obtained when CT was applied to GS. Changes in the A-type polymorphic structure, as well as a drop in relative crystallinity, were produced by CT for DS and HS. Additionally, changes in O-H and C-O-C FTIR bands were observed. Therefore, CT can be applied for starch modification, producing predominantly cross-linking in the DS and de-polymerization in the HS. Casting films made from the modified DS showed higher tensile strength and lower hydrophilicity, solubility, water absorption capacity, and water vapor permeability. Thus, the DS cross-linking induced by CT improved mechanical characteristics and hydrophobicity in edible films, which can be better used as packaging materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are under consideration for their use as bioimaging probes with enhanced optical performance for real time follow-up under non-invasive conditions. Photostable and core-shell NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+-SiO2 UCNPs obtained by a novel and simple co-precipitation method from lanthanide nitrates or oxides were herein synthesized for the first time. The sol–gel Stöber method followed by oven or supercritical gel drying was used to confer biocompatible surface properties to UCNPs by the formation of an ultrathin silica coating. Upconversion (UC) spectra were studied to evaluate the fluorescence of UCNPs upon red/near infrared (NIR) irradiation. ζ-potential measurements, TEM analyses, XRD patterns and long-term physicochemical stability were also assessed and confirmed that the UCNPs co-precipitation synthesis is a shape- and phase-controlling approach. The bio- and hemocompatibility of the UCNPs formulation with the highest fluorescence intensity was evaluated with murine fibroblasts and human blood, respectively, and provided excellent results that endorse the efficacy of the silica gel coating. The herein synthesized UCNPs can be regarded as efficient fluorescent probes for bioimaging purposes with the high luminescence, physicochemical stability and biocompatibility required for biomedical applications. We determined the effects of sodium propionate (SP) added to the diets of Atractosteus tropicus juveniles with respect to the growth, survival, digestive enzyme activity, and expression of genes that are associated with the immune system. Five treatments (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%) were evaluated in triplicate on 180 fish (3.65 ± 0.12 g) distributed among 15 (70 L) tanks. The juveniles were fed five times a day with 5% feed in relation to the biomass of the organism. The treatment with 0.5% SP showed a final weight value of 25.7 ± 4.5 g, absolute weight of gain (AWG) of 21.93 ± 4.39 g, and specific growth rate (SGR) of 3.1 ± 0.26. Treatments with 1.5 and 2.0% SP showed the highest survival (91.6%). The control group (0%) showed a greater activity of lipases. There was a tendency that the highest activity of alkaline proteases and chymotrypsin occurred in the 0 and 0.5% treatments. The maximum relative expression of the genes ocln, muc2, and nod2 occurred in the 1.5% treatment. The inclusion of SP in the diet of A. tropicus juveniles could benefit the activity of some digestive enzymes as well as the expression of genes related to the function of the intestinal barrier, therefore benefitting the survival of the organisms. Aerogels have recently started to be considered as "advanced materials"; therefore, as a general consideration, aerogels' toxicity testing should focus on their functionality which resides in their nanoscale open internal porosity. To assess the hazards of organic aerogels, testing at three levels may characterize their biophysical, in vitro and in vivo toxicity, defining distinct categories of aerogels. At the first level of testing, their abiotic characteristics are investigated, and the best aerogel(s) is forwarded to be tested at level 2, wherein in vitro methodologies may mainly evaluate the aerogels' cellular behavior. Within level 2 of testing, the main characteristics of toxicity are investigated and the selected aerogels are introduced to in vivo animal models at level 3. Polysaccharide aerogels have emerged as a highly promising technology in the field of oral drug delivery. These nanoporous, ultralight materials, derived from natural polysaccharides such as cellulose, starch, or chitin, have significant potential in colonic drug delivery due to their unique properties. The particular degradability of polysaccharide-based materials by the colonic microbiota makes them attractive to produce systems to load, protect, and release drugs in a controlled manner, with the capability to precisely target the colon. This would allow the local treatment of gastrointestinal pathologies such as colon cancer or inflammatory bowel diseases. Despite their great potential, these applications of polysaccharide aerogels have not been widely explored. This review aims to consolidate the available knowledge on the use of polysaccharides for oral drug delivery and their performance, the production methods for polysaccharide-based aerogels, the drug loading possibilities, and the capacity of these nanostructured systems to target colonic regions. A newly produced silk fibroin (SF) aerogel particulate system using a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2)-assisted drying technology is herein proposed for biomedical applications. Different concentrations of silk fibroin (3%, 5%, and 7% (w/v)) were explored to investigate the potential of this technology to produce size- and porosity-controlled particles. Laser diffraction, helium pycnometry, nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy were performed to characterize the physicochemical properties of the material. The enzymatic degradation profile of the SF aerogel particles was evaluated by immersion in protease XIV solution, and the biological properties by cell viability and cell proliferation assays. The obtained aerogel particles were mesoporous with high and concentration dependent specific surface area (203–326 m2/g). They displayed significant antioxidant activity and sustained degradation in the presence of protease XIV enzyme. Aquaculture practices expose fish to several factors that may generate stress, modifying the balance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activity of antioxidant defenses that induce cell damage. Alpha-tocopherol (VE) improves the antioxidant capacity against ROS production in fish. A 50-day trial with longfin yellowtail (Seriola rivoliana) juveniles was conducted to compare the dietary supplementation of 500 mg/kg of VE against a control diet without VE supplementation on growth, lymphoid tissue enzymatic activity, immune-system-related gene expression, and the histology of the liver and spleen. Growth, weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion rate, and survival did not show significant differences (p > 0.05) among treatments. Fish fed with an α-tocopherol-enriched diet showed a higher enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase in the liver (p < 0.05) and a lower percentage of melanomacrophage coverage area in the lymphoid organs (p < 0.05). Overexpression was observed of MyD88 and il-10 in the spleen, and il-1b in the liver in fish fed 500 mg/kg of VE, as well as overexpression of Toll-like 3 in the head kidney, spleen, and liver in fish fed the control diet. The use of fibres applied to concrete in order to improve its properties is widely known. Nowadays, research is not only focused on improving mechanical properties but also on the environmental implications. The aim of this research was a mechanical and environmental comparison between different types of fibres. For this purpose, commercial fibres of three materials were used: low carbon steel, modified polyolefins, and glass fibre. In order to improve the sustainability of the sector, we also analysed and compared the performance of using a waste product, such as fibres from machining operations on lathes. For the evaluation of the mechanical properties, compression and flexural tests were carried out. The results show that the use of low carbon steel fibres increases the flexural strength by 4.8%. At the environmental level, and in particular for impact categories such as the Global Warming Potential (GWP), lathe waste fibres prove to be the most suitable. For instance, compared to glass fibres, CO2 emissions are reduced by 14.39%. This is equivalent to a total of 38 kg CO2 emissions per m3 of reinforced concrete. In addition to avoiding the consumption of 482 MJ/m3 of fossil fuels, the results of the research indicate the feasibility of using waste fibres as a substitute for commercial fibres, contributing to an improved environmental balance without losing mechanical performance. Guatemala's wild avocado germplasm holds vital genetic value, but lacking conservation strategies imperils it. Studying its diversity is pivotal for conservation and breeding. The study aimed to comprehensively assess the wild avocado germplasm in Guatemala by combining phenotypic and genotypic data and to create a core collection for conservation and future breeding programs. A total of 189 mature avocado trees were sampled across Guatemala's northern, southern, and western regions. Morphological characteristics were documented, and genetic diversity was assessed using 12 SSR loci. The investigated germplasm revealed three distinct genetic clusters, exhibiting an average gene diversity of 0.796 and a 7.74% molecular variation among them. The samples showed various morphological characteristics that indicate the presence of three avocado races in Guatemala. The weak correlation between phenotypic and genotypic distances highlighted their independence and complementary nature. The joint matrix effectively integrated and captured genotypic and phenotypic data for comprehensive genetic diversity analysis. A core collection comprising 20% of total accessions that captured maximum genetic diversity was formed. This study exposed wild Guatemalan avocados' genetic diversity, morphological traits, and conservation significance. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have become an attractive way to produce green energy via their integration into buildings as photovoltaic windows. Recently, carbon quantum dots (C-QDs) have become the most studied luminescent material for the manufacture of luminescent solar concentrators due to their advantages, such as low toxicity, sustainability, and low cost. Despite the advantages of carbon quantum dots, they remain a low-efficiency material, and it is difficult to fabricate LSCs with a good performance. To address this problem, some of the research has used SiO2 nanoparticles (Nps) to produce a light-scattering effect that helps to improve the system performance. However, these studies are limited and have not been discussed in detail. In this regard, this research work was designed to evaluate the contribution of the scattering effect in different systems of carbon quantum dots used in a possible luminescent solar concentrator. To carry out this study, C-QDs and SiO2 Nps were synthesized by hydrothermal methods and the Stober method, respectively. We used different concentrations of both materials to fabricate film LSCs (10 × 10 cm2). The results show that the light scattered by the SiO2 Nps has a double contribution, in terms of light redirected towards the edges of the window and as a secondary source of excitation for the C-QDs; thus, an improvement in the performance of the LSC is achieved. The best improvement in photoluminescence is achieved when the films are composed of 20% wt carbon quantum dots and 10% wt SiO2 Nps, reaching a gain of 16% of the intensity of the light incident on the edges of the window with respect to the LSCs where only C-QDs were used. The aim of this paper is to present a performance-based method to estimate uniform risk spectra (URS) for the seismic design and assessment of structures. These spectra, computed with the proposed methodology, provide the lateral capacity (in terms of spectral acceleration) that should be given to a structure, characterized by a reference single degree of freedom system, to achieve a predetermined exceedance rate of economic loss. This procedure involves the seismic hazard assessment necessary to define a seismic design level consistent with the accepted loss value, using a large enough number of synthetic seismic records of several magnitudes, which were obtained by means of an improved empirical Green function method. The statistics of the expected losses of a reference single degree of freedom system are obtained using Monte Carlo simulation, considering the seismic demand and the lateral strength of the structure as random variables. The method is divided into two main stages: (1) definition of the seismic hazard at the site of interest and (2) the probabilistic analysis of the seismic performance in terms of an economical loss ratio of nonlinear SDOF. To illustrate the proposed methodology and, subsequently, to validate it, a URS was computed for a site located in the Mexico City lake-bed zone, and its use in the design of three reinforced concrete frames is shown. The results show that the proposed spectra provide a sufficient approximation between the seismic risk level considered in the seismic design and that of the designed structure. It is concluded that the proposed procedure is a significant improvement over others considered in the literature and a useful research tool for the further development of risk-based earthquake engineering. The escalating global energy demand, driven by heavy reliance on fossil fuels, worsens environmental degradation and triggers socio-economic shifts in extraction and refinery hubs. In Colombia, the energy matrix is predominantly fossil-based (76%), with hydroelectric power accounting for 70% of electricity generation. However, renewable energy sources only contribute 2% to the national energy mix. To reduce emissions by 20% by 2030, Colombia has presented an energy transition roadmap. The need for bioenergy production in Colombia arises from the residual biomass availability, the potential to provide sustainable energy access, and the potential to mitigate climate change impacts, while addressing energy poverty and enhancing energy security. This study presents an overview of biogas production in Colombia, emphasizing the need for financial resources to overcome barriers. Policy incentives, awareness campaigns, and research and development play a vital role in fostering social acceptance, technology adoption, and optimizing biogas production processes. Collaborative efforts among the government, private sector, and local communities are recommended to ensure wide-scale adoption of biogas, promoting economic, social, and environmental sustainability. By enabling informed decision-making, this research supports the transition to renewable energy sources and the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on bioenergy. From the moment a patient is admitted to the hospital, monitoring begins, and specific information is collected. The continuous flow of parameters, including clinical and analytical data, serves as a significant source of information. However, there are situations in which not all values from medical tests can be obtained. This paper aims to predict the medical test values of COVID-19 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). By retrieving the missing medical test values, the model provides healthcare professionals with an additional tool and more information with which to combat COVID-19. The proposed approach utilizes a customizable deep learning model. Three types of neural networks, namely Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Long/Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU), are employed. The parameters of these neural networks are configured to determine the model that delivers the optimal performance. Evaluation of the model's performance is conducted using metrics such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The application of the proposed model achieves predictions of the retrieved medical test values, resulting in RMSE = 7.237, MAPE = 5.572, and MAE = 4.791. Moreover, the article explores various scenarios in which the model exhibits higher accuracy. With the widespread of Monkeypox and increase in the weekly reported number of cases, it is observed that this outbreak continues to put the human beings in risk. The early detection and reporting of this disease will help monitoring and controlling the spread of it and hence, supporting international coordination for the same. For this purpose, the aim of this paper is to classify three diseases viz. Monkeypox, Chikenpox and Measles based on provided image dataset using trained standalone DL models (InceptionV3, EfficientNet, VGG16) and Squeeze and Excitation Network (SENet) Attention model. The first step to implement this approach is to search, collect and aggregate (if require) verified existing dataset(s). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper which has proposed the use of SENet based attention models in the classification task of Monkeypox and also targets to aggregate two different datasets from distinct sources in order to improve the performance parameters. The unexplored SENet attention architecture is incorporated with the trunk branch of InceptionV3 (SENet+InceptionV3), EfficientNet (SENet+EfficientNet) and VGG16 (SENet+VGG16) and these architectures improve the accuracy of the Monkeypox classification task significantly. Comprehensive experiments on three datasets depict that the proposed work achieves considerably high results with regard to accuracy, precision, recall and F1-score and hence, improving the overall performance of classification. The production of aerogels for different applications has been widely known, but the use of polysaccharide-based aerogels for pharmaceutical applications, specifically as drug carriers for wound healing, is being recently explored. The main focus of this work is the production and characterization of drug-loaded aerogel capsules through prilling in tandem with supercritical extraction. In particular, drug-loaded particles were produced by a recently developed inverse gelation method through prilling in a coaxial configuration. Particles were loaded with ketoprofen lysinate, which was used as a model drug. The core-shell particles manufactured by prilling were subjected to a supercritical drying process with CO2 that led to capsules formed by a wide hollow cavity and a tunable thin aerogel layer (40 μm) made of alginate, which presented good textural properties in terms of porosity (89.9% and 95.3%) and a surface area up to 417.0 m2/g. Such properties allowed the hollow aerogel particles to absorb a high amount of wound fluid moving very quickly (less than 30 s) into a conformable hydrogel in the wound cavity, prolonging drug release (till 72 h) due to the in situ formed hydrogel that acted as a barrier to drug diffusion. Metal welding processes, and electric arc welding in particular, constitute a key link in a production chain comprising a large number of companies. This fact, in addition to a growing trend in favour of more in-depth environmental analysis and control of industry, and the need to continue affording due consideration to the economic aspect set the stage for this study. Herein, an environmental and economic analysis is conducted of four types of electric arc welding: TIG welding with and without filler, MIG, MAG, and SMAW welding. Different types of materials are examined such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminium, thus the results generate relevant comparative information on the economic and environmental impacts of choosing one type of welding over another. To this end, an experimental study was carried out: 480 test specimens were welded using different welding technologies. A series of data was collected during the welding process to inform an environmental analysis based on a Life Cycle Analysis and an economic study. The most salient results include that the TIG welding process with filler generated the greatest environmental impact due to its higher consumption of shielding gas. On the other hand, the SMAW process demonstrated the best environmental performance as categories such as Global Warming Potential; CO2 emissions dropped by 93.29%. A key factor is the final indicator of human health, where, once again, TIG technology had the worst results, in contrast to SMAW technology, wherein impact decreased by 93.08%. Concerns about prolonged downtime and functionality losses observed after recent seismic events have made it clear that seismic design is heading towards a resilience-based approach. However, there is still currently no clear consensus on how to quantify and interpret resilience. In this document, a probabilistic approach to estimate recovery times and functionality loss in buildings is presented, which allows for the estimation of seismic resilience through consideration of delay times and the behavior of non-structural elements. To achieve these goals, simple models that associate structural response and the resilience parameters (recovery time and functionality) are defined. The proposed approach was implemented in a database for public school buildings in Puebla City, where the expected times and functionality were obtained, thus allowing for quantification of the seismic resilience of each structure. Furthermore, target values for low and high resilience are proposed, which helps to identify the weakest elements in the educative Mexican infrastructure. The results showed that the inclusion of delay times and non-structural elements in resilience quantification is mandatory if an overestimation of resilience values is to be avoided. At the same time, the target values allow for the different structures to be categorized according to the resilience values obtained, finding that a significant portion of Mexican school buildings are underprepared in a resilience context. Multiple tissue perfusion markers are described to guide therapy in critically ill pediatric patients undergoing congenital heart surgery. Given the advantages of capillary refill time, our goal is to determine its predictive capacity for mortality and postoperative extracorporeal oxygenation requirements in congenital heart surgery and compare it to serum lactate. We conducted a prospective cohort observational study in a single high-complexity university hospital. Serum lactate and capillary refill time were measured at five predetermined time points: preoperative, immediate postoperative, 6, 12, and 24 h after the surgery. Prolonged immediate postoperative, 6 h, and 12 h capillary refill time measurements turned out to be independent risk factors for both outcomes. The capillary refill time area under the curve ranged between 0.70 and 0.80, while the serum lactate resulted between 0.79 and 0.92 for both outcomes. Both tissue perfusion markers resulted in mortality and extracorporeal oxygenation requirement predictors. Given the advantages of capillary refill time over serum lactate, a monitoring strategy including these two perfusion markers should be considered for congenital heart surgeries. Tumor-on-chips have become an effective resource in cancer research. However, their widespread use remains limited due to issues related to their practicality in fabrication and use. To address some of these limitations, we introduce a 3D-printed chip, which is large enough to host ~1 cm3 of tissue and fosters well-mixed conditions in the liquid niche, while still enabling the formation of the concentration profiles that occur in real tissues due to diffusive transport. We compared the mass transport performance in its rhomboidal culture chamber when empty, when filled with GelMA/alginate hydrogel microbeads, or when occupied with a monolithic piece of hydrogel with a central channel, allowing communication between the inlet and outlet. We show that our chip filled with hydrogel microspheres in the culture chamber promotes adequate mixing and enhanced distribution of culture media. In proof-of-concept pharmacological assays, we biofabricated hydrogel microspheres containing embedded Caco2 cells, which developed into microtumors. Microtumors cultured in the device developed throughout the 10-day culture showing >75% of viability. Microtumors subjected to 5-fluorouracil treatment displayed <20% cell survival and lower VEGF-A and E-cadherin expression than untreated controls. Simple Summary: The systemic treatment of advanced sarcoma remains challenging. Conventional chemotherapy and anti-angiogenic agents, even in the most responsive histologic subtypes, result in short responses and poor clinical outcomes. In a context where new therapeutic approaches are required, several strategies of immunotherapy have emerged as promising options, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, vaccines, and adoptive cell therapy. In this review, we aim to summarize the current state and challenges of immunotherapy in patients with advanced bone and soft-tissue sarcomas. There is substantial heterogeneity between different subtypes of sarcoma regarding their biological behavior and microenvironment, which impacts their responsiveness to immunotherapy. Alveolar soft-part sarcoma, synovial sarcoma and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma show higher immunogenicity and better responses to checkpoint inhibitors. Combination strategies adding immunotherapy to chemotherapy and/or tyrosine–kinase inhibitors globally seem superior to single-agent schemes. Therapeutic vaccines and different forms of adoptive cell therapy, mainly engineered TCRs, CAR-T cells and TIL therapy, are emerging as new forms of immunotherapy for advanced solid tumors. The present study centers on the synthesis of ultra-small silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with antibacterial properties using citrus peel residues (orange, lemon, and grapefruit) as reducing and stabilizing agents, and on assessing their antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant clinical Staphylococcus aureus. The synthesized AgNPs were analyzed by various techniques, including UV-Vis spectroscopy, SAED, TEM, XRD, FTIR, and Raman. The results demonstrate the formation of ultra-small, monodisperse, quasi-spherical AgNPs with an average particle size of 2.42 nm for AgNPs produced with mixed extracts. XRD analysis indicated that the AgNPs have a crystal size of 9.71 to 16.23 nm. The AgNPs exhibited potent inhibitory activity against resistant S. aureus, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 15.625 to 62.50 ppm. The findings suggest that the ultra-small nanometer size of the AgNPs could be attributed to the synthesis method that employs ambient conditions and the presence of polyphenolic compounds from citrus peel. Consequently, AgNPs obtained through sustainable green synthesis hold significant potential in combating clinical multi-resistant bacterial strains that are challenging to treat and eradicate. The effect of adding inulin to balanced diets for tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) larvae on growth, survival, digestive enzyme activity, and antioxidant activity was evaluated. The diets were supplemented with 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5% inulin in addition to a control diet (0% inulin). A total of 1800 larvae of A. tropicus distributed in 18 tanks were used; the larvae were fed five times a day (8:00, 11:00, 13:00, 15:00, and 18:00) with Artemia nauplii from the absorption of the yolk (from 3–7 days after hatching, DAH) up to 10 DAH, which was mixed with the experimental feeds from 8–11 DAH (co-feeding) and exclusively with the balanced diets from 12 DAH to 21 DAH. Larvae fed the control diet (0% inulin) had the highest growth in weight and length, followed by fish fed the 2.5 and 2.0% inulin inclusions. However, survival showed that the fish fed with the inclusion of 2.5% inulin had the highest percentage (34.7%) compared to the rest of the treatments. On the other hand, the highest digestive enzymatic activities (acid and alkaline proteases, amylase, and lipase) were recorded in the larvae fed with 2 and 2.5% inulin. Likewise, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were higher in larvae fed the control diet with 0% inulin. BK channels are large conductance potassium channels characterized by four pore-forming α subunits, often co-assembled with auxiliary β and γ subunits to regulate Ca2+ sensitivity, voltage dependence and gating properties. BK channels are abundantly expressed throughout the brain and in different compartments within a single neuron, including axons, synaptic terminals, dendritic arbors, and spines. Their activation produces a massive efflux of K+ ions that hyperpolarizes the cellular membrane. Together with their ability to detect changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration, BK channels control neuronal excitability and synaptic communication through diverse mechanisms. Moreover, increasing evidence indicates that dysfunction of BK channel-mediated effects on neuronal excitability and synaptic function has been implicated in several neurological disorders, including epilepsy, fragile X syndrome, mental retardation, and autism, as well as in motor and cognitive behavior. Here, we discuss current evidence highlighting the physiological importance of this ubiquitous channel in regulating brain function and its role in the pathophysiology of different neurological disorders. The defence-in-depth (DiD) methodology is a defensive approach usually performed by network administrators to implement secure networks by layering and segmenting them. Typically, segmentation is implemented in the second layer using the standard virtual local area networks (VLANs) or private virtual local area networks (PVLANs). Although defence in depth is usually manageable in small networks, it is not easily scalable to larger environments. Software-defined networks (SDNs) are emerging technologies that can be very helpful when performing network segmentation in such environments. In this work, a corporate networking scenario using PVLANs is emulated in order to carry out a comparative performance analysis on defensive strategies regarding CPU and memory usage, communications delay, packet loss, and power consumption. To do so, a well-known PVLAN attack is executed using simulated attackers located within the corporate network. Then, two mitigation strategies are analysed and compared using the traditional approach involving access control lists (ACLs) and SDNs. The results show the operation of the two mitigation strategies under different network scenarios and demonstrate the better performance of the SDN approach in oversubscribed network designs. Sporotrichosis is an implantation mycosis with subcutaneo-lymphatic or, more rarely, a viscerally disseminated affection; it can be acquired through traumatic percutaneous inoculation of the fungus present in soil or plant matter, or by feline scratching. Among the causative agents, Sporothrix brasiliensis is considered the most virulent species with a high prevalence in Brazil and recently in Argentina. Objective: To describe a S. brasiliensis outbreak in domestic and feral cats detected in the Magallanes region of southern Chile. Materials and Methods: Between the months of July and September 2022, three cats presented with suppurative subcutaneous lesions located mainly on the head and thoracic limbs. The cytology revealed the presence of yeasts with morphological characteristics suggestive of Sporothrix spp. The histopathology confirmed pyogranulomatous subcutaneous lesions associated with the presence of the same yeasts. The fungal culture followed by the partial gene sequence and analysis of the ITS region confirmed the diagnosis of the S. brasiliensis as the causative agent. The cats were treated with itraconazole associated in one case with potassium iodide. The evolution of the patients was favorable in all cases. Conclusions: An outbreak caused by S. brasiliensis was detected in domestic and feral cats in austral Chile. The correct identification of this fungus and antifungigram is essential for treatment decisions and for designing dissemination control and prevention programs under a one health approach that consider the health of people, animals, and the environment. The numerous prepreg characteristics benefit industries like the aerospace and automotive ones, producing a wide range of high-performance components for primary or secondary applications. Parts production is usually assisted by a thermoforming process in which the prepreg is heated and reshaped employing a moulding system. The ply-ply and ply-tool sliding behaviours in the Thermoforming govern the defects generation, such as wrinkles, making its study a crucial step. This work analyses ply-ply and ply-tool friction coefficients for UD AS4/8552 Carbon/Epoxy prepreg. A pull-out test method was employed to determine the friction coefficients at different velocities, pressures, and temperatures related to the thermoforming process conditions, supplying a detalied report of friction parameters and mechanisms. The measurements of the interlaminar resin layer thickness and the surface roughness geometry resulted respectively in a range of 11–14 μm and 3–4 μm were taken into account in the Lubrication Theory approach to developing an analytical model. Based on the Stribeck curve and Reynolds equation for a viscous fluid, the developed model accurately predicts friction coefficients for prepreg composite materials in the process and contact conditions mentioned below. Emotion recognition is a very challenging research field due to its complexity, as individual differences in cognitive–emotional cues involve a wide variety of ways, including language, expressions, and speech. If we use video as the input, we can acquire a plethora of data for analyzing human emotions. In this research, we use features derived from separately pretrained self-supervised learning models to combine text, audio (speech), and visual data modalities. The fusion of features and representation is the biggest challenge in multimodal emotion classification research. Because of the large dimensionality of self-supervised learning characteristics, we present a unique transformer and attention-based fusion method for incorporating multimodal self-supervised learning features that achieved an accuracy of 86.40% for multimodal emotion classification.
