The synthesis and characterization of iron oxide nanostructures, specifically snowflake architecture, are investigated for their potential applications in electrochemical sensing systems. A Raman spectroscopy analysis reveals phase diversity in the synthesized powders. The pH of the synthesis affects the formation of the hematite (α-Fe2O3) and goethite (α-FeOOH). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images confirm the distinct morphologies of the particles, which are selectively obtained through recrystallization during the elongated reaction time. An electrochemical analysis demonstrates the differing behaviors of the particles, with synthesis pH affecting the electrochemical activity and surface area differently for each shape. Cyclic voltammetry measurements reveal reversible dopamine detection processes, with snowflake iron oxide showing lower detection limits than a mixture of snowflakes and cube-like particles. This research contributes to understanding the relationship between iron oxide nanomaterials' structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties. A systematic study on the dissolution in concentrated alkali of two volcanic ashes from Cameroon, denoted as DAR and VN, is presented here. One volcanic ash, DAR, was 2 wt% richer in Fe and Ca and 4 wt% lower in Si than the other, designated as VN. Such natural raw materials are complex mixtures of aluminosilicate minerals (kaersutite, plagioclase, magnetite, diopside, thenardite, forsterite, hematite, and goethite) with a good proportion of amorphous phase (52 and 74 wt% for DAR and VN, respectively), which is more reactive than the crystalline phase in alkaline environments. Dissolution in NaOH + sodium silicate solution is the first step in the geopolymerisation process, which, after hardening at room temperature, results in solid and resistant building blocks. According to XRD, the VN finer ash powders showed a higher reactivity of Al-bearing soluble amorphous phases, releasing Al cations in NaOH, as indicated by IPC-MS. In general, dissolution in a strong alkaline environment did not seem to be affected by the NaOH concentration, provided that it was kept higher than 8 M, or by the powder size, remaining below 75 µm, while it was affected by time. However, in the time range studied, 1–120 min, the maximum element release was reached at about 100 min, when an equilibrium was reached. The hardened alkali activated materials show a good reticulation, as indicated by the low weight loss in water (10 wt%) when a hardening temperature of 25 °C was assumed. The same advantage was found for of the room-temperature consolidated specimens' mechanical performance in terms of resistance to compression (4–6 MPa). The study of the alkaline dissolution of volcanic ash is, therefore, an interesting way of predicting and optimising the reactivity of the phases of which it is composed, especially the amorphous ones. Fe(III) oxides were prepared as free nanoparticles and on DNA templates via the precipitation of Fe(III) salts with NaOH in the presence/absence of DNA. Through control of the pH and temperature, FeOOH and Fe2O3 were synthesised. The formation of templated materials FeOOH/DNA and Fe2O3/DNA was confirmed using UV-Vis absorption and FTIR spectra. The direct optical gap of Fe2O3/DNA was estimated as 3.2 eV; the absorption by FeOOH/DNA and Fe2O3/DNA at longer wavelengths is weaker, but consistent with indirect gaps near 2 eV. X-ray photoelectron spectra confirmed the presence of Fe(III) and DNA in the templated samples. Analysis of the X-ray diffraction patterns of both templated and non-templated FeOOH and Fe2O3 demonstrated that the materials were the α-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3 polymorphs with crystallite diameters of the DNA-templated materials estimated as 7.6 nm and 6.8 nm. Transmission electron microscopy showed needle-like crystals of both FeOOH and Fe2O3, but the Fe2O3 contains some globular structures. In contrast, the morphology of FeOOH/DNA and Fe2O3/DNA consists of needle-like crystallites of the respective oxides organised into complex dendritic structures with a length on the 10 μm scale formed by the DNA molecules. Finally, scanned conductance microscopy provided evidence for the conductivity of the FeOOH/DNA after alignment via molecular combing on an Si/SiO2 substrate. Gold, along with other highly siderophile elements, is hosted by Fe-Ni sulfide phases within peridotites and mantle melts. In this context, the lithospheric mantle emerges as a principal reservoir, providing materials crucial for the inception, augmentation, conveyance, and genesis of auriferous CO2-rich mantle fluids. EPMA and laser ablation ICP-MS data, integrated with petrographic and SEM studies, were used to assess the transfer of base and precious metals into the Earth's crust, discerning between inputs from subduction-related processes and post-formation metasomatism. The study focuses on sulfide minerals in serpentinized peridotites of the Abu Dahr ophiolite in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Originating in a supra-subduction setting during the Neoproterozoic era, the Abu Dahr peridotites underwent serpentinization and contain discrete sulfide minerals, including pentlandite, nickeloan pyrrhotite, millerite, chalcopyrite, and violarite. The uneven distribution of calcite ± magnesite ± serpentine veins throughout the host ophiolitic rocks reflects the intricate interplay of serpentinization and carbonation, as fO2 and fCO2 conditions fluctuated. Geochemical data of the host rocks reveal a progressive geochemical evolution marked by concurrent silicification and carbonate alteration, driven by the interaction of ultramafic rocks with hydrothermal fluids, ultimately leading to the extensive silicification and formation of birbirite. The ICP-MS data show that pentlandite contains up to 6.11 ppm of Au, pyrrhotite up to 0.41 ppm, millerite 0.34 ppm, and violarite 0.12 ppm. The gold concentration in pentlandite is significantly higher than in pyrrhotite, millerite, and violarite, which exhibit lower but detectable levels of Au. Desulfurization reactions of sulfide minerals during progressive serpentinization triggered the release and redistribution of Au as well as base metals and highly siderophile elements. Published thermodynamic modeling at temperatures below 300 °C and pressures of 50 MPa closely replicates the mineral assemblage observed in the Abu Dahr ophiolites, including sulfide assemblages and variations in major elements such as Mg and Fe. This suggests that the serpentinization process, along with associated hydrothermal fluids, played a crucial role in the mobilization and redistribution of gold, particularly affecting its incorporation into secondary sulfides. The mobilization of Au and other highly siderophile elements during serpentinization occurred in an environment marked by strong oxidation, as indicated by the presence of acicular antigorite, magnetite, millerite, and goethite intergrowths. Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFC) are bioelectrochemical systems that can use different wastes for energy production. This work studied the implementation of nanoparticles (NPs) of α-FeOOH (goethite, which is well-known as a photoactive catalyst) in the electrodes of an SMFC for its potential use for dye removal. The results obtained demonstrate the feasibility of the NPs activation with the electrical potential generated in the electrodes in the SMFC instead of the activation with light. The NPs of α-FeOOH were synthesized using a hydrothermal process, and the feasibility of a conductive bio-composite (biofilm and NPs) formation was proven by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical techniques. The improvement of the power density in the cell was more than twelve times higher with the application of the bio-composite, and it is attributed mostly to the presence of NPs. The results also demonstrate the NPs effect on the increase of the electron transfer, which resulted in 99% of the COD removal. The total electrical energy produced in 30 days in the SMFC was 1.2 kWh based on 1 m2 of the geometric area of the anode. The results confirm that NPs of α-FeOOH can be used to improve organic matter removal. Manganese co-precipitated with goethite (Mn-FeOOH) is ubiquitous within (sub-)surface environments, which are considered one of the most important sinks for phosphorus pollution management. Accordingly, various mole ratios of Mn-FeOOHs are synthesized and characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, FTIR, BET, XPS, hysteresis loop, acid–base titration and zero potential. According to XRD and FESEM images, the substitution of Mn causes subtle alterations in the microstructure and crystal structure of goethite, and the morphology of Mn-FeOOHs is transformed from needle-shaped goethite to a short-rod-shaped rough surface with increasing Mn substitution. Based on the analysis of BET and acid–base titration, the substitution of Mn into goethite significantly improved the surface area, pore volume, surface properties and active sites of goethite, thereby establishing a theoretical basis for effective subsequent adsorption. Batch experiment results show that the removal rate of phosphate decreases with the increasing solution pH, indicating that acidic groundwater conditions are more conducive to the removal of phosphate. In addition, the adsorption of phosphate on Mn-FeOOHs is independent of ionic strength, indicating that the inner-sphere surface complexation predominated their adsorption behaviors. The isotherm experiment results showed that Mn-G15 exhibits the strongest adsorption capacity for phosphate at pH 5.5 and T = 318 K, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 87.18 mg/g. The Wadi Ranga sulfidic jasperoids in the Southern Eastern Desert (SED) of Egypt are hosted within the Neoproterozoic Shadli metavolcanics as an important juvenile crustal section of the Arabian Nubian Shield (ANS). This study deals with remote sensing and geochemical data to understand the mechanism and source of pyritization, silicification, and hematization in the host metavolcanics and to shed light on the genesis of their jasperoids. The host rocks are mainly dacitic to rhyolitic metatuffs, which are proximal to volcanic vents. They show peraluminous calc-alkaline affinity. These felsic metatuffs also exhibit a nearly flat REE pattern with slight LREE enrichment (La/Yb = 1.19–1.25) that has a nearly negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.708–0.776), while their spider patterns display enrichment in Ba, K, and Pb and depletion in Nb, Ta, P, and Ti, reflecting the role of slab-derived fluid metasomatism during their formation in the island arc setting. The ratios of La/Yb (1.19–1.25) and La/Gd (1.0–1.17) of the studied felsic metatuffs are similar to those of the primitive mantle, suggesting their generation from fractionated melts that were derived from a depleted mantle source. Their Nb and Ti negative anomalies, along with the positive anomalies at Pb, K, Rb, and Ba, are attributed to the influence of fluids/melt derived from the subducted slab. The Wadi Ranga jasperoids are mainly composed of SiO2 (89.73–90.35 wt.%) and show wide ranges of Fe2O3t (2.73–6.63 wt.%) attributed to the significant amount of pyrite (up to 10 vol.%), hematite, goethite, and magnetite. They are also rich in some base metals (Cu + Pb + Zn = 58.32–240.68 ppm), leading to sulfidic jasperoids. Pyrite crystals with a minor concentration of Ag (up to 0.32 wt.%) are partially to completely converted to secondary hematite and goethite, giving the red ochre and forming hematization. Euhedral cubic pyrite is of magmatic origin and was formed in the early stages and accumulated in jasperoid by epigenetic Si-rich magmatic-derived hydrothermal fluids; pyritization is considered a magmatic–hydrothermal stage, followed by silicification and then hematization as post-magmatic stages. The euhedral apatite crystals in jasperoid are used to estimate the saturation temperature of their crystallization from the melt at about 850 °C. The chondrite (C1)-normalized REE pattern of the jasperoids shows slightly U–shaped patterns with a slightly negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu* = 0.43–0.98) due to slab-derived fluid metasomatism during their origin; these jasperoids are also rich in LILEs (e.g., K, Pb, and Sr) and depleted in HFSEs (e.g., Nb and Ta), reflecting their hydrothermal origin in the island arc tectonic setting. The source of silica in the studied jasperoids is likely derived from the felsic dyke and a nearby volcanic vent, where the resultant Si-rich fluids may circulate along the NW–SE, NE–SW, and E–W major faults and shear zones in the surrounding metavolcanics to leach Fe, S, and Si to form hydrothermal jasperoid lenses and veins. Bioremediation has drawn widespread concern in passivating heavy metals, but the intense toxicity of heavy metals to biological cells limits the application of functional strains. Herein, goethite-modified biochar (GMB) was chosen as the carrier to immobilize phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) of strain L1 for lead and cadmium remediation. Batch experiments showed that the GMB-L1 possessed excellent adsorption performance with a maximum adsorption of 496.54 and 178.18 mg/g for Pb and Cd, respectively. Moreover, adding GMB-L1 in contaminated soil converted heavy metals (Pb and Cd) into more stable fractions and reduced TCLP-extracted heavy metal concentrations (73.24% of Pb and 57.25% of Cd). The GMB-L1 was proved to accomplish Pb and Cd remediation via the process of chemical precipitation, surface complexation, electrostatic attraction, and biomineralization, which was accompanied by the transformation of heavy metals into a more stable crystal structure, such as Pb5(PO4)3OH and Cd5(PO4)3OH. In this paper, based on our previous expertise on ceramic artifacts, several archaeometric methods applied to some samples collected from the Dudești archaeological site (Oltenia region, Romania) are reported for the first time in the literature. The chemical composition, and microstructural and morphological characterization of these samples offer important conclusions about the processing conditions. Some specific techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), optical microscopy (OM), stereomicroscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy provide compositional information about composition and the decay processes. Additionally, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method helps to estimate pore sizes and specific surface areas. A thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/TDG) was used to establish details regarding the production technology and also the raw materials source used to make the ceramics. The obtained results indicated that the ceramics are based on a paste of muscovite and feldspar, with high plasticity, together with quartz and hematite/goethite and calcite, the latter in very low concentrations. According to the obtained results, we could assume that clays from the investigated samples had a low concentration of calcium. Gypsum is present as paste in a very low concentration, identified by the presence of a sulphate group in WDXRF. In the same context, iron oxides have a significant impact on the firing atmosphere of iron-rich clay, resulting in blackening under reducing conditions and a reddish coloration under oxidative conditions. The use of hematite and gypsum as pigments further contributes to the color variations in the pottery. The consistent firing temperature range of 200–600 °C in Dudești pottery implies a standardized production process, the variation in color being dependent on the specific reducing/oxidative regime conditions (reducing atmosphere followed by rapid oxidation). This relationship between clay composition and local sources suggests a connection to Neolithic pottery production in the region and their color depending on the reducing/oxidative regime conditions. Iron oxide assemblages are central to many pursuits, ranging from Mars exploration to environmental remediation. Oxides and oxyhydroxides of iron both carry the special properties of color and magnetism. In this paper, we use visible-light spectroscopy and rock magnetic data collected at varying temperatures (~77–973 K) to analyze the concentrations and identities of iron oxides found in natural hematite-dominated samples that were obtained from a scientific drill core of Late Triassic red beds in the American Southwest. Our results suggest that hematite colorization of Earth materials varies from red to blue/purple as crystal size increases. Second-derivative analysis of the collected visible-light spectra allows this variation to be measured through the characteristic wavelength band position. Magnetic coercivity data indicate "hardness" differences that also may suggest smaller grain sizes are associated with redder colors. Yellowish maghemite and goethite have overlapping characteristic wavelength band positions that make it challenging to distinguish their contributions to mixed assemblages from visible-light data alone. Remanent magnetizations acquired at ~77 K and room temperature suggest the presence of hematite and a low-coercivity phase that may be maghemite and/or oxidized magnetite. However, we interpret this phase as maghemite in order to explain the changes in iron oxide concentrations indicated by visible-light intensities near ~425 nm and because the thermal demagnetization data suggest that goethite is absent from the samples. Future research that increases the resolution of hematite, maghemite, and goethite detection in experimental and natural samples will provide opportunities to refine the study of past climates and constrain soil iron availability under future changes in global moisture and temperature. In this study, a facile approach for simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA) and tryptophan (TRP) using a 3D goethite–spongin-modified carbon paste electrode is reported. The prepared electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical catalytic activity towards DA and TRP oxidation. The electrochemical sensing of the modified electrode was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Through differential pulse voltammetry analysis, two well-separated oxidation peaks were observed at 28 and 77 mV, corresponding to the oxidation of DA and TRP at the working electrode, with a large peak separation of up to 490 mV. DA and TRP were determined both individually and simultaneously in their dualistic mixture. As a result, the anodic peak currents and the concentrations of DA and TRP were found to exhibit linearity within the ranges of 4–246 μM for DA and 2 to 150 μM for TRP. The detection limits (S/N = 3) as low as 1.9 μM and 0.37 μM were achieved for DA and TRP, respectively. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of DA and TRP in human urine samples with satisfactory recoveries (101% to 116%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Goethite and ferrihydrite are the two major iron hydroxides, essential mineral constituents in the terrestrial surface system. Aluminum (Al) is the most common substituent in iron hydroxides, and it may significantly change the bulk and surficial physicochemical properties of iron hydroxides. Consequently, a practical and convenient approach is needed to efficiently identify the Al substitution degrees of iron hydroxides in natural occurrences. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the VSWIR characteristics of laboratory-synthesized Al-substituted goethite and ferrihydrite, to establish diagnostic VSWIR parameters for the identification and quantification of Al substitution levels in iron hydroxides. The findings revealed that Al substitution can affect the band positions (P) of goethite and ferrihydrite at ~650 nm, ~900 nm, and ~1400 nm. The relationships between the Al substitution of ferrihydrite and VSWIR parameters can be expressed as P900 = −0.43 × Al(%) + 931 and P1400 = −0.07 × Al(%) + 1428, while that of goethite can be expressed as P650 = 0.42 × Al(%) + 657 and P900 = 2.29 × Al(%) + 936. The peak fitting results showed that the absorption intensity at 480–550 nm linearly decreases with increased Al substitution. The obtained VSWIR spectra of Al-substituted goethite and ferrihydrite provide a critical supplement to the spectral library for (Al) iron hydroxides, and these VSWIR parameters can be utilized for the semi-quantitative determination of Al substitution in natural iron hydroxides [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This document is a summary of a special issue of the journal Water titled "Sources, Risks, and Remediation Technologies of Pollutants in Aquatic Environments." The special issue contains 12 contributions, including original articles, reviews, and a communication, that cover a range of topics related to water pollution and control. The articles discuss various pollutants, such as organophosphate esters, phenolic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and mercury, and their impacts on different water sources, including groundwater, irrigation water, wastewater, drinking water, and seawater. In this study, the degradation system of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and goethite was constructed with chlorpyrifos as the target contaminant. The effects of initial pH, contaminant concentration, and temperature on the removal rate of chlorpyrifos during the degradation process were investigated. The experimental conditions were optimized by response surface methodology with a Box–Behnken design (BBD). The results show that the removal rate of chlorpyrifos is 75.71% at pH = 6.86, an initial concentration of 19.18 mg·L−1, and a temperature of 30.71 °C. LC-MS/MS analyses showed that the degradation products were C4H11O3PS, C7H7Cl3NO4P, C9H11Cl2NO3PS, C7H7Cl3NO3PS, C9H11Cl3NO4P, C4H11O2PS, and C5H2Cl3NO. Presumably, the degradation pathways involved are: enzymatic degradation, hydrolysis, dealkylation, desulfur hydrolysis, and dechlorination. The findings of this study demonstrate the efficacy of the goethite/S. oneidensis MR-1 complex system in the removal of chlorpyrifos from water. This study aims to investigate the effects of parent rock and minerals on lateritic weathering. The study presents X-ray diffraction (XRD), whole-rock geochemistry, and Nd-Sr isotopic data for examining two profiles, 10 and 12 m thick, respectively, that illustrate the regional tropical weathering status in the Midwest of Brazil. The profiles, developed from metasedimentary and sedimentary rocks, are constituted by saprolite, mottled horizon, lateritic duricrust, and oxisol. Across the profiles, the minerals controlling the weathering geochemistry are muscovite, microcline, quartz, kaolinite, hematite, goethite, and gibbsite. Red and yellow zones in the saprolite and mottled horizon as well as the lateritic duricrust with breccia/fragmental, pisolitic, and oolitic textures make profile 1 more complex. In contrast, profile 2 has an oxisol that mantles the homogeneous vermiform lateritic duricrust. Fe2O3, accumulated during surface weathering, is a potent element in the geochemical profile control since it forms the harder goethite to hematite lateritic duricrust, bearing most of the trace elements (As, Cu, Cs, Pb, Sc, Sr, Th, U, V, and Zn) with similar ionic radii and electrovalence. The LREE have affinity for the elements of the Fe2O3 group of the lateritic duricrust. On the other hand, the K2O group together with Zr and TiO2 e in the phyllite, saprolite, and mottled horizon of profile 1, are associated with the HREE. Additionally, in profile 2, the HREE are mostly associated with the Al2O3 group and the residual minerals in the oxisol. The indication that REE is associated with phosphates, zircon, rutile/anatase, cereanite, and muscovite/illite, which have variable weathering behavior, caused the REE fractionation to occur across and between the profiles. Despite the REE fractionation, the ƐNd(0) values along the profiles consistently maintain the signature of the parent rock. Muscovite and microcline weathering, in profiles 1 and 2, respectively, control the decrease in 87Sr/86Sr signatures of both profiles and the distinct radiogenic ratios. The development of lateritic duricrust in both profiles indicates a similar weathering intensity, although the gibbsite–kaolinite predominance in the oxisol of profile 2 highlights a geochemical reorganization under humid conditions, as well as near-intense soluble silica leaching. A sample of goethite iron ore sinter feed (G_SF) was employed as a raw material in a sintering bed. This sample partially replaced hematite sinter feed (H_SF), which is currently used as raw material in a sintering plant in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. This substitution did not adversely affect the chemical and metallurgical proprieties of the sinter mix product, provided that the utilization of G_SF was kept below 30% in weight. Despite the higher proportion of fines in G_SF, the presence of argillaceous minerals in the sample led to an improvement in the granulation index (GI) of the sinter mix product. The GI value increased from 68.4 to 82.7% for the experiments conducted without the presence of goethite ore and with 40% of goethite ore in the sintering mix, respectively. Consequently, the qualities of both the process and the produced sinter product were not compromised. The raw materials and the various sinters produced were characterized through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The XRD results were used to perform a quantitative assessment of the mineral phase using the Rietveld method (RM). This technique allowed for the determination of goethite content in the studied sample, which was 35.5%. Chromium (Cr) contamination, widely present in the environment, poses a significant threat to both ecology and human health. Microbial remediation technology has become a hot topic in the field of heavy metal remediation due to its advantages, such as environmental protection, low cost, and high efficiency. This paper focused on using various characterization and analysis methods to investigate the bioreduction effect and mechanism of microorganisms on Cr(VI) under various influencing factors. The main contents and conclusions were as follows: Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was selected as the target strain for studying its reduction of Cr(VI) at different inoculation amounts, temperatures, pH values, time intervals, etc. The results indicated that S. oneidensis MR-1 exhibited an optimal reduction effect on Cr(VI) at pH 7 and a temperature of 35 °C. Additionally, electron shuttles (ESs), including humic acid (HA) and 9,10-antraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), were introduced into the degradation system to improve the reduction efficiency of S. oneidensis MR-1. Upon adding goethite further, S. oneidensis MR-1 significantly enhanced its reducing ability by converting Fe(III) minerals to Fe(II) and reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III) during electron transfer. Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasitic protozoan with a high infection rate in mammals, including humans, and birds. There is no effective vaccine, and treatment relies on antiparasitic drugs. However, existing antiprotozoal drugs have strong side effects and other problems; therefore, new treatment approaches are needed. Metal nanoparticles have attracted increased interest in the biomedical community in recent years because of their extremely high surface area to volume ratio and their unique reactivity that could be exploited for medicinal purposes. Previously, we confirmed the anti-Toxoplasma effects of gold, silver, and platinum nanoparticles, in a growth inhibition test. Here, we asked whether the anti-Toxoplasma effect could be confirmed with less expensive metal nanoparticles, specifically iron oxide nanoparticles (goethite and hematite). To improve the selective action of the nanoparticles, we modified the surface with l-tryptophan as our previous findings showed that the bio-modification of nanoparticles enhances their selectivity against T. gondii. Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis confirmed the successful coating of the iron oxide nanoparticles with l-tryptophan. Subsequently, cytotoxicity and growth inhibition assays were performed. L-tryptophan-modified nanoparticles showed superior anti-Toxoplasma action compared to their naked nanoparticle counterparts. L-tryptophan enhanced the selective toxicity of the iron oxide nanoparticles toward T. gondii. The bio-modified nanoparticles did not exhibit detectable host cell toxicity in the effective anti-Toxoplasma doses. To elucidate whether reactive oxygen species contribute to the anti-Toxoplasma action of the bio-modified nanoparticles, we added Trolox antioxidant to the assay medium and found that Trolox appreciably reduced the nanoparticle-induced growth inhibition. The migration of 32 elements from natural zeolitized tuffs from the Beli Plast and Golobradovo deposits (Bulgaria) was determined in ultrapure, tap, mineral, and coal mine waters in order to evaluate their desorption and adsorption properties. The tuffs are Ca-K-Na and contain clinoptilolite (90 and 78wt.%, respectively), plagioclase, sanidine, opal-CT, mica, quartz, montmorillonite, goethite, calcite, ankerite, apatite, and monazite. The desorption properties are best revealed during the treatment of ultrapure, tap, and mineral water, whereas the adsorption properties are best manifested in coal mine water treatment. The concentrations of Al, Si, Fe, Na, Mn, F, K, Pb, and U increase in the treated ultrapure, tap, and mineral water, while the content of K, Be, Pb, and F increase in the treated mine water. The tuffs show selective partial or complete adsorption of Na, Mg, Sr, Li, Be, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Al, Pb, U, and SO42−. They demonstrate the ability to neutralize acidic and alkaline pH. Sources of F are presumed to be clinoptilolite and montmorillonite. Hematite and goethite are widely occurring chromogenic iron oxides in soils and sediments that are sensitive to climatic dry/wet shifts. However, only by accurately quantifying the content or ratio of hematite and goethite can they be applied reliably to palaeoclimate reconstruction. Compared to the Loess Plateau of China, hematite in the soils of southern China has not been sufficiently studied. We used diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (abbreviation DRS, including the first-derivative curves and the second-derivative curves of the Kubelka–Munk remission functions), combined with ignition at 950 °C, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to quantify the hematite content of four tropical-margin iron-rich soil profiles with different matrix compositions in the Leizhou Peninsula, China. We also examined the application of hematite quantification parameters in soils with different matrix compositions under the same climatic conditions. Our main findings are as follows: (i) DRS first-derivative curves can reflect the presence of goethite and hematite in soils, and their relative contents can be compared within the same profile. (ii) The second-derivative curve of the Kubelka–Munk remission functions can reflect the relative proportions of goethite and hematite and provide information about the degree of Al substitution. (iii) Combined with calibration equations, soil redness can reliably quantify the hematite content, but it is necessary to consider the effect of mucilage envelopes in the process of hematite formation. Additionally, we summarize various methods used for quantifying hematite, and the influence of soil matrix compositions, with the aim of providing a reference for hematite quantification elsewhere. The Yungang Grottoes, excavated during the 5th to 6th centuries AD, stand as a pinnacle of Buddhist sculpture, representing a precious world cultural heritage. Since their excavation, the grottoes have undergone multiple phases of painting, with a significant amount of pigment still present on the surfaces of the stone carvings. Since the 1990s, two large-scale archaeological excavations have been conducted on both the front ground and the summit of Yungang Grottoes. During these excavations, various artifacts with accompanying pigments were unearthed, encompassing stone carvings, grinding tools, architectural components, fragments of murals, and remnants of clay sculptures, spanning the historical periods of the Northern Wei, Liao-Jin, and Ming-Qing dynasties. Using portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, portable microscopy, polarizing microscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and confocal Raman microscopy, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of these painted elements. The investigation revealed the presence of hematite, vermilion, goethite, malachite, calcium carbonate, lead white, and ivory black pigments in the Northern Wei samples. One of the alternative materials used for conducting conservation treatment of iron artifacts is the rust converter, since it generates barrier properties and more stable oxides. The protective properties and surface modifications from using Mimosa tenuiflora extract as a green rust converter on a gray iron oxide layer were studied. The surface characterization was carried out using a Scanning Electron Microscope coupled to an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS), along with infrared spectroscopy (IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Water Contact Angle (WCA). Electrochemical characterization was performed with an Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscope (EIS) using 3.5 wt.% NaCl as the electrolyte. According to the results of the Raman spectroscopy and XRD, the layer of corrosion products formed after 90 days in the atmosphere was composed of goethite, lepidocrocite, maghemite, hematite, and magnetite. The surface of the corrosion products was transformed with the rust converter into an amorphous and microcracked layer. By IR, the Fe-O and C-O-Fe bonds associated with the iron chelate were found with absorption bands at 1540 and 1567 cm−1, respectively. By XRD, a modification of the magnetite crystallinity was observed. Ferrihydrite is usually used as a remedy for arsenic (As)-contaminated soil due to its strong affinity and large specific surface area. However, its noncrystalline phase makes it unstable in long-term applications in the soil. In this study, a soil incubation experiment was designed using the diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) technique and spectral techniques to investigate the fate of As-bearing ferrihydrite [As(V)-Fh] after long-term incubation at different soil water holding capacities (SWHCs). After As(V)-Fh (0.05 and 0.005 As/Fe molar ratio) was incubated in soil for 360 days, both DGT-derived labile As and Fe were released at 70% SWHC and 120% SWHC into the soil (at a vertical depth of 12 cm). The concentrations of DGT-As and DGT-Fe increased with incubation time and were greater at 120% SWHC. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that As(V)-Fh gradually transformed into hematite and goethite after 360 days of incubation. Goethite was mainly found in the 120% SWHC treatment after 180 days. Hematite and goethite formation rates were greater in the 120% SWHC treatment and in the bottom soil layer. Mechanistic analysis based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the variation in soil pH and the formation of Fe(II) (under flooded water conditions) are the two key factors promoting the formation of hematite (dehydrogenation and dehydration) and goethite (As(V)-Fh dissociation and reorganization). The As release mainly occurred due to the loss of adsorption sites. This study investigates the performance of two bentonite materials, specifically MX-80 (Na-bentonite) and FEBEX (Ca-Mg-Na-bentonite), employed as engineered barriers in deep geological disposal facilities for the isolation of high-level radioactive waste, contained in metallic canisters. Experiments conducted at the laboratory scale focused on the interaction of these bentonites with FeCl2 powder, used as a soluble iron source, to observe enhanced alteration of the bentonite. The experiments were carried out under a hydrothermal gradient. A dominant Na-Cl-SO4 saline solution was put in contact with the compacted bentonites from the top, while a constant temperature of 100 °C was maintained at the bottom using a heater in contact with the layer of FeCl2. The experimental cells were examined after six months of interaction. Various changes in the physical and chemical properties of the bentonites were observed. An increase in the water content, a reduction in the specific surface area and cation exchange capacity, changes in the distribution of aqueous species, and the formation of secondary minerals were observed. Reaction products formed at the bentonite interface with FeCl2, primarily comprising akaganeite, goethite, and hematite. The smectites showed evident structural modifications, with an enrichment in iron content, and a shift in the exchangeable ion distribution in the case of MX-80 bentonite. This work provides valuable insights into the complex interactions between bentonite barriers and materials that dissolve iron, serving as proxies for deep geological disposal environments and indicating the potential long-term behavior, taking into account higher concentrations of dissolved iron than those expected in a real repository. Continental rifting of the Tisza microplate started during the Late Jurassic and resulted in phreatic eruptions, peperite, and the construction of a volcanic edifice in the Early Cretaceous in the Mecsek Mountains (South Hungary). In the SE direction from the volcanic edifice at Zengővárkony, a shallow marine (depth 100–200 m) carbonate sediment hosted a vent environment, and iron ore deposition occurred at the end of the Valanginian to early Hauterivian, hosting a diverse, endemic fauna of approximately 60 species. The detailed mineralogical analysis of the transport conduits included Fe oxides (ferrihydrite, goethite, hematite, and magnetite), quartz, mixed carbonate, pyrite, feldspar, Fe-bearing clay minerals, apatite, sulfates (barite, gypsum, and jarosite), and native sulfur. Filamentous, microbially mediated microtextures with inner sequented, necklace-like spheric forms (diameter of 1 μm) and bacterial laminae are also observed inside decapod crustacean coprolites (Palaxius tetraochetarius) and in the rock matrix. This complex ecological and mineralogical analysis provided direct evidence for the presence of bacteria in fossil sediment-hosted vent (SHV) environments on the one hand and for the intimate connection between bacteria and decapod crustaceans in hydrothermal environments 135 Ma before. This observation completes the fossil food chain of chemosynthesis-based ecosystems, from primary producers to the top carnivores reported for the first time from this locality. Gem-quality rubies and sapphires are often commercially heat treated at about 800 °C or higher to enhance their color and clarity, and hence quality. For this study, selected corundum samples containing diaspore and goethite inclusions were heated step-by-step to a maximum of 1000 °C with the aim of monitoring the dehydration and phase transformation of these oxyhydroxides to corundum and hematite during heating. Based on our experiments and in agreement with the literature, the dehydration of diaspore in corundum occurs between 525 and 550 °C, whereas goethite transforms to hematite between 300 and 325 °C. As both diaspore and goethite may be present as inclusions in rubies, sapphires, and other corundum varieties (e.g., pink sapphires, padparadscha), these dehydration reactions and phase transformations can be considered important criteria to separate unheated from heated stones, specifically in cases in which other methods (e.g., microscopy, FTIR) are unsuccessful. The structural biopolymer spongin in the form of a 3D scaffold resembles in shape and size numerous species of industrially useful marine keratosan demosponges. Due to the large-scale aquaculture of these sponges worldwide, it represents a unique renewable source of biological material, which has already been successfully applied in biomedicine and bioinspired materials science. In the present study, spongin from the demosponge Hippospongia communis was used as a microporous template for the development of a new 3D composite containing goethite [α-FeO(OH)]. For this purpose, an extreme biomimetic technique using iron powder, crystalline iodine, and fibrous spongin was applied under laboratory conditions for the first time. The product was characterized using SEM and digital light microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, XRD, thermogravimetry (TG/DTG), and confocal micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (CMXRF). A potential application of the obtained goethite–spongin composite in the electrochemical sensing of dopamine (DA) in human urine samples was investigated, with satisfactory recoveries (96% to 116%) being obtained. The bauxite ores of Kazakhstan were analyzed using Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and an X-ray fluorescence analysis. Experimental data on the structural–phase composition of bauxites were obtained, and the features of the iron-bearing minerals within them were revealed. The studied bauxites were high in iron. The magnetic part of bauxite was mainly represented by aluminohematite with a concentration of CAl = 3.34–5.73 at.%, alongside goethite in small amounts. The predominant phase in the bauxite samples was the alumina-bearing mineral gibbsite with a well-crystallized monoclinic lattice. The main siliceous mineral of bauxite is kaolinite, which showed distorted octahedral positions in a number of samples. Siderite amounts were found to vary in the range of 0–15 at.% in the present iron-bearing minerals. Ilmenite was also present in the bauxite of some deposits; anatase was found in all bauxites and was the final product of ilmenite decomposition in the weathering crust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The biological reduction of Fe (III) is common in underground environments. This process not only affects the biogeochemical cycle of iron but also influences the migration and transformation of pollutants. Humic substances are considered effective strategies for improving the migration and transformation of toxic substances and enhancing the bioavailability of Fe (III). In this study, the electron shuttle anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) significantly promoted the bio-reduction of Fe (III). On this basis, different concentrations of aniline were added. The research results indicate that at an aniline concentration of 3 μM, the production of Fe (II) in the reaction system was 2.51 times higher compared to the microbial reaction group alone. Furthermore, the degradation of aniline was most effective in this group. The increased consumption of sodium lactate suggests that aniline, under the mediation of AQS, promoted the metabolism of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 cells and facilitated the involvement of more electrons in the reduction process. After the reaction, the solid mineral Fe (II)-O content increased to 41.32%. This study provides insights into the reduction mechanism of Fe (III) in the complex environment of microorganisms, iron minerals, electron shuttles, and pollutants. High-iron and low-silicon red mud is not only an alkaline solid waste from Bayer process alumina production, but it is also a very important secondary iron resource. Magnetization roasting is considered as an effective and typical method for the iron recovery and removal of impurities in red mud. In this work, based on the characteristics of large specific surface area and high porosity of red mud, the kinetics of magnetization roasting and phase transformation of red mud were studied. Thermodynamic analysis results show that the reduction of iron oxide in red mud is more easily promoted by CO as reducing agent at low roasting temperature. The reduction reaction is prone to overreduction, and fayalite and ferrospinel can be formed in the reaction system. The phase transformation and iron reduction mechanism during the roasting process were evaluated. Most of hematite and goethite in the red mud decomposed in the process of magnetization roasting, released CO2, and transformed into strongly magnetic magnetite. The reaction process has some characteristics controlled by homogeneous reaction. In equatorial and tropical regions, supergene mineral deposits created during water/rock interactions are found. Simply put, these supergene deposits are formed through the accumulation of low solubility ions or through the preservation of primary minerals. The supergene manganese (Mn) deposits are examples of the economic importance associated with the chemical weathering processes. In Brazil, the Southern Brasilia Orogen (SBO) was generated during the collision between the Paranapanema Craton and the passive margin of the São Francisco Craton. In the southern Minas Gerais (MG), several supergene Mn occurrences are hosted in the SBO, which were originated during the chemical weathering of gondites belonging to the Amparo Complex. Here, we studied the supergene Mn occurrences in the southern MG, more specifically in the municipalities of Ouro Fino and Careaçu. The MnO contents ranged from 25.50 to 28.40 wt% at Ouro Fino and from 16.80 to 21.20 wt% at Careaçu. These supergene Mn deposits have a diverse mineral assemblage, being composed of spessartine, quartz, Mn-oxides, goethite and kaolinite. The various Mn minerals formed due to spessartine incongruent dissolution were hollandites, cryptomelanes, romanechites, pyrolusites and lithiophorites. After being subjected to geometallurgical evaluation, the iron ores from Singhbhum Bonai-Keonjhar region, eastern India, have been designated as dense martite microplaty hematite high-strength ore (dM-mH-hs ore), massive dense martite microplaty hematite high-strength ore (mdM-mH-hs ore), schistose microplaty hematite low-strength ore (smH-ls ore), microplaty hematite powdery ore (mH-p ore), vitreous goethitic ore (vG ore), and ochreous goethitic ore (oG ore) end members, with varied strengths attributed to the microporosity levels. The first four variants form typical high-grade run-of-mines (ROMs) (hard, soft and powdery iron ore variants, e.g., ROM-HIO, ROM-SSIO, and ROM-PBD, respectively) with better amenability to beneficiation. In contrast, oG and vG ore end members form ROM lateritic iron ore (ROM-LIO) with poor amenability to beneficiation, having relatively higher concentrates of alumina (~3–6 wt%) due to the complex mineral chemistry of goethite and altered hematite. Banded hematite jasper (BHJ) is a very low-grade siliceous end member. In a mining operation, the ROMs may have the attributes of several combinations of the above-stated end members and ROM variants. The designated end members present in the ROMs determine their liberation, mineralogical processes, geometallurgical characteristics, amenability to beneficiation, product grade and recovery. Sedimentary facies color is an important paleoclimate indicator, but may be unreliable in thick continental red beds. The Danxia Formation is the landscape strata of the Danxia basin, and its color fluctuates between reddish-brown and reddish-purple vertically. This study examined the ferric oxides characteristics, distribution, and mineral composition of the Danxia Formation using a variety of analytical techniques, including optical microscopy, high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, X-ray diffraction, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the reddish-brown mineral is composed primarily of fine hematite with traces of goethite, while the reddish-purple mineral consists solely of fine hematite. These hematites exhibit a particle size range of submicron to micron and display various morphologies, including spherical, flake, and fibrous forms. Goethite particles are needle-shaped and often form star-shaped aggregates containing twins. Whole rock geochemical analysis reveals a strong positive correlation between iron and iron group elements, as well as phosphorus and rare earth elements. The findings suggest that the reddening of the Danxia Formation occurs during diagenesis, with fine hematite forming as a result of the alteration of iron-bearing detrital grains. In addition, vertical color variations in Danxia Formation are not attributable to the paleoclimate records, but rather the result of the differentiation of sediment sources. The Tevinskoye agate deposit is located in the North of the Kamchatka peninsula (Russia) and represented by agate-bearing Eocene basaltic and andesitic rocks of the Kinkilsk complex. Agate mineralization occurs in lavas and tuffs as amygdales, geodes, lenses and veins, which are the main sources of the resupply of coastal agate placers. The present study aimed to perform a comprehensive mineralogical, geochemical, and O-isotope investigation of amethyst-bearing agates, and to evaluate data concerning the origin of mineralization and the conditions for amethyst formation. Agates exhibit spectacular textures, with variation in the sequence of silica filling of amygdales and geodes. The mineral composition of the agates is mainly represented by micro- and macro-crystalline quartz, amethyst, length-fast and zebraic chalcedony, moganite, goethite, and clinoptilolite. Carbonate forms individual bands in the outer zones of some agates. The presence of small amounts of native copper, covellite, chalcopyrite and pyrite is a feature of these agates. Copper and iron mineralization are probably typomorphic features related to the host rock composition. The measured values of crystallite size (525–560 Å) and the high moganite content (up to 50%) of agate with amethyst are evidenced by the young age (~45 Ma) of agate-hosting rocks. Agate formation temperatures (21–229 °C) were calculated from the O-isotope composition of chalcedony (+19.6 to +25.5‰), quartz (+18.1 to +22.3‰), and amethyst (+18.2 to +21.5‰). The cold-water monophase fluid inclusions revealed in amethyst crystals suggest that the mineralizing fluids have low temperatures (<100 °C) and low salinity. Magnetite grains in host rock, together with goethite inclusions identified within the amethyst crystals, point to a change in redox conditions and the presence of iron in the agate-forming fluids, which entered the quartz lattice during crystallization and influenced the formation of the violet color. This paper reviews and summarizes the available information on the composition of palladian gold with various contents and sets of isomorphic impurities (Ag, Cu, Hg) at 50 deposits and ore occurrences with Au-Pd mineralization. It is revealed that Palladian gold is represented by the systems Au–Pd, Au–Pd–Hg, Au–Pd–Cu, and Au–Pd–Ag–Hg, but more frequently corresponds to Au–Pd–Ag, Au–Pd–Ag–Cu, and Au–Pd–Ag–Cu–Hg. Objects with palladian gold belong to different types of gold deposits and to the deposits at which the main components of ores are PGE, Cr, Cu, Ni, V, and Ti. We propose a classification of the types of deposits with palladian gold: (1) PGE ore deposits related to mafic–ultramafic magmatic complexes (two subtypes—(a) low-sulfide-grade (less than 2%–5% sulfides) Alaskan, and (b) high-sulfide-grade (more than 5% sulfides) Norilsk); (2) orogenic gold deposits (OG); (3) epithermal (porphyry) gold–copper deposits (EPGC); (4) iron oxide copper gold deposits (IOCG); (5) ferruginous quartzite deposits; (6) volcanic exhalation; and (7) gold-PGE placers of five subtypes corresponding to the types of 1–5 primary sources. Physicochemical conditions of the formation of palladian gold at some deposits of type 1 cover two areas—magmatic high-temperature and hydrothermal low-temperature. At the majority of deposits of types 2–4, its formation proceeds with the participation of hydrothermal fluids (300–60 °C) of various salinities (0.2–30 wt.% NaCl eq.). Palladian gold is mainly high-fineness (910‰–990‰), is less frequently medium-fineness, and contains Ag and Cu, but does not contain Hg at the deposits of types 1, 3, and 4. The only exception is the Au-Pd-Hg Itchayvayam ore occurrence (Kamchatka, Russia), for which two varieties of Pd,Hg-bearing native gold (fineness 816‰–960‰ and 580‰–660‰) are determined. Low-fineness palladian gold with the major content of Ag is typical of OGD deposits. Medium-fineness palladian gold occurs at ferruginous quartzite deposits and in volcanic exhalations. Hg, Ag, Cu-bearing high-fineness palladian gold is present mainly in placer deposits (type 7). The most common minerals in association with palladian gold are arsenides, stibioarsenides, sulfides, stannides, bismuthides, tellurides, and selenides of Pd and Pt. These are typical of deposit types 1 and 7. The minerals of Au, Ag, and Cu (tetra-auricupride, aurostibite, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, eucairite, etc.) are in association with palladian gold at OG, EPGC, and IOCG deposits. Hg minerals (cinnabar, tiemannite, coloradoite, potarite) are at some deposits (types 1, 2, 7-1, 7-4). Cu, Fe, and Pd oxides (tenorite, hematite, magnetite, PdO, (Pd,Cu)O) and Fe and Pd hydroxides (goethite, (Fe,Pd)OOH) occur at the deposits of the 3, 4, and 7 groups and indicate the highly oxidizing conditions of ore formation. The most common minerals among host minerals are quartz and muscovite, including fuchsite (Cr-Ms), chlorite, albite, K-feldspar, hornblende, and carbonates (calcite, siderite, etc.). Hyperbaric oxygen-accelerated corrosion testing (HOACT) is a newly developed method to study in the labor the corrosion behavior of steel bars in concrete. This work aimed to intensively investigate the mechanical properties and microstructures of HOACT-generated corrosion products by means of nano-indentation tests, Raman micro-spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The local elastic modulus and nanohardness varied over wide ranges of 6.8–75.2 GPa and 0.38–4.44 GPa, respectively. Goethite, lepidocrocite, maghemite, magnetite, and akageneite phases were identified in the corrosion products. Most regions of the rust layer were composed of a complex and heterogeneous mix of different phases, while some regions were composed of maghemite or akageneite only. The relationship between the micromechanical properties and typical microstructural features is finally discussed at the micro-scale level. Sedimentary arsenic (As) in the shallow aquifers of Bangladesh is enriched in finer-grained deposits that are rich in organic matter (OM), clays, and iron (Fe)-oxides. In Bangladesh, sediment color is a useful indicator of pore water As concentrations. The pore waters of orange sediments are usually associated with lower As concentrations (<50 µg/L) owing to abundant Fe-oxides which sorb As. Using this color signal as a guide, spectroscopic measurements alongside thermal treatment were extensively utilized for analyzing the properties of both Fe-oxides and clay minerals. This study uses Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and diffuse reflectance (DR) measurements along with thermal treatment to evaluate the solid-phase associations of As from sediment collected along the Meghna River in Bangladesh. The samples analyzed in this study were chosen to represent the various lithologies present at the study site and included riverbank sands (1 m depth), silt (6 m depth), aquifer sand (23 m depth), and a clay aquitard (37 m depth). The concentrations of sedimentary As and Fe were measured by X-ray fluorescence, and the spectroscopic measurements were taken on the samples prior to the thermal treatment. For the thermal treatment, sediment samples were placed in a preheated furnace at 600 °C for 3 h. The thermal treatment caused a deepening of reddish-brown hues in all samples, and the greatest change in color was observed in the finer-grained samples. The FTIR spectral analysis revealed that the clay minerals were composed primarily of illite, smectite, and kaolinite. The DR results indicate that the majority of Fe in sands was present as goethite; however, in the clay and silt samples, Fe was incorporated into the structure of clay minerals as Fe(II). The amount of structural Fe(II) was strongly positively correlated with the sedimentary As concentrations, which were highest in the finer-grained samples. After thermal treatment, the concentrations of As in the finer-grained samples decreased by an average of 40%, whereas the change in the As concentrations of the sand samples was negligible. Rocks and minerals buried in the earth's surface usually undergo weathering processes and change color in the burying environment. A kind of yellow Chinese stamp stone named "Lumu stone", which is buried in a yellowish weathering crust (yellowish soil), was selected to investigate its color changes in the weathering processes. In this study, the appearance features, mineral components, micromorphology, spectroscopy characteristics, and color causation of the "Lumu stone" were studied by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA), a laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS), and a UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrum. The "Lumu stone" usually exhibits a darker yellow outer layer and a lighter yellow core, suggesting that yellow color permeated into the stone from the surface to the core gradually and the color is secondary forming. The results from XRD and SEM show the studied samples are mainly composed of dickite and illite. The individual particles of the dickite and illite are about 2–5 μm, randomly distributing in the three-dimensional space and constituting voids among the particles. The acid pickling experiments using HCl coupled with KSCN confirmed that the mineral phases that caused the yellow color of the matrix are iron oxide and hydroxide. On the other hand, goethite and hematite were observed gathering in the yellow and brown-red cracks on the "Lumu stone" by SEM study. However, iron oxide and hydroxide in the matrix were difficult to observe and detect among the dickite and illite aggregates by SEM and XRD methods. It indicates that they may be nanoscale in size and very low in content. According to the calculation of the second derivative of Kubelka-Munk (K-M) transformed diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) curves obtained from UV-Vis, the characteristic peaks of goethite and hematite were found in the yellow matrix, and their contributions to the color were confirmed. The concentrations of goethite and hematite were calculated to be 0.32 to 1.87 g/kg and 0.22 to 0.93 g/kg in the studied samples, respectively. In this study, a series of methods were employed to detect very low levels of goethite and hematite in the samples undergoing weathering processes. Additionally, nanoscale goethite and hematite were considered newly formed minerals when buried in the weathering processes and may gradually move into the voids among phyllosilicate particles. This paper presents the first laboratory study of four materials (three lateritic soils and one sandy soil) mainly used in road construction in French Guiana. The analysis of macroscopic behaviour by physical tests, following French standards, made it possible to classify and group the samples with respect to the rules specified in the Guide des Terrassements Routiers (GTR). According to the GTR, these raw materials could only be used as backfill materials and under very specific hydric conditions. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation by the X-ray fluorescence analysis, scanning electron microscopy observation supplemented by the X-ray microanalysis, and the infrared analysis revealed differences in the main minerals. Indeed, the presence of mineral species such as kaolinite and gibbsite and oxides such as goethite and hematite was detected. The macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the four soils made it possible to establish a relationship between their geotechnical and mineralogical properties. Finally, the results of this study led to the conclusion that the mineralogical composition and geotechnical properties of lateritic soils must be known simultaneously to allow correct identification for their application in road construction. Red mud (RM) is composed of a waste alkaline solution (pH = 13.3) obtained from the production of alumina. It contains high concentrations of hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeOOH), gibbsite [Al(OH)3], a boehmite (AlOOH), anatase (Tetragonal–TiO2), rutile (Ditetragonal dipyramidal–TiO2), hydrogarnets [Ca3Al2(SiO4)3−x(OH)4x], quartz (SiO2), and perovskite (CaTiO3). It was shown to be an excellent catalytic mixture for biodiesel production. To demonstrate the value of RM, an environmentally friendly process of transesterification in aqueous medium using waste cooking oil (WCO), MeOH, and waste alkaline solution (WAS) obtained from aluminum production was proposed. Triglycerides of WCO reacted with MeOH at 60 °C to yield mixtures of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) in the presence of 0.019% (w/w) WAS/WCO using the WAS (0.204 mol L−1, predetermined by potentiometric titration) from aluminum production by the Bayer process. Lead is a highly toxic heavy metal that creates a water pollutant. It can be released from industrial processes, agricultural chemistry, and community wastes, affecting creatures and human health even at a low concentration. As a result, it is advised that lead be removed before releasing wastewater into the environment. This study synthesized three chitosan bead materials from shrimp shell wastes which were chitosan powder beads (CB), chitosan powder mixed with goethite beads (CFB), and chitosan powder beads coated with goethite (CBF) for removing lead in an aqueous solution. Their surface area, pore volumes, and pore sizes were explored according to Brunauer– Emmett–Teller, and their crystalline formations were investigated using an X-ray diffractometer. Their surface structures were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy and a focus ion beam, and their chemical compositions were determined using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer. Their chemical functional groups were identified via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of several factors on removing lead, and the adsorption isotherm and kinetics were also investigated for determining their adsorption pattern and mechanism. In addition, the desorption experiments were studied to confirm their possible material reusability. The CBF demonstrated the highest surface area and smallest pore size compared with the other materials. In addition, the pore sizes of the CFB and CBF were micropores, whereas those of the CB were mesopores. All materials were semicrystalline structures, and the specific goethite peaks were observed in the CFB and CBF. All materials had spherical shapes with heterogeneous surfaces. Six chemical components of O, C, Ca, N, Cl, and Na were discovered in all materials, and Fe was only found in the CFB and CBF because of the addition of goethite. Five main chemical functional groups of N–H, O–H, C–H, C–O, and –COOH were found in all materials. The optimum conditions of the CB, CFB, and CBF for removing lead were 0.5 g, 16 h, pH 5, 0.5 g, 16 h, pH 5, and 0.4 g, 14 h, pH 5, respectively. The results of the batch experiments demonstrated that the CB, CFB, and CBF were high-efficiency adsorbents for removing lead in solution by more than 95%, whereby the CBF showed the highest lead removal of 99%. The Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model helped to well explain their adsorption pattern and mechanism. The maximum lead adsorption capacities of the CB, CFB, and CBF were 322.58, 333.33, and 344.83 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, all chitosan materials can be reused for more than three cycles with high lead removal by more than 94%; so, they are potential materials for application in industrial applications. This article presents a two-step method of iron red synthesis based on waste long-term deposited iron(II) sulfate. The first step is the purification of waste iron sulfate, and then the pigment is synthesized by precipitation using a microwave reactor. The newly developed method of purification allows for quick and thorough purification of iron salt. The use of a microwave reactor in the synthesis of iron red makes it possible to reduce the temperature of the goethite–hematite phase transition from 500 °C to 170 °C and skip the calcination process. A temperature reduction in the synthesis decreases the formation of agglomerates of synthesized materials compared to commercial ones. The results of the research showed a change in the physicochemical properties of the obtained pigments depending on the conditions of synthesis. Waste iron(II) sulfate is a promising raw material for the synthesis of iron red pigments. Laboratory pigments are found to be differ from commercial pigments. In this study, three kinds of iron minerals, ferrihydrite, hematite, and goethite, were prepared by a simple coprecipitation method for the adsorption and removal of phenylarsonic acid (PAA). The adsorption of PAA was explored, and the influences of ambient temperature, pH, and co-existing anions on adsorption were evaluated. The experimental results show that rapid adsorption of PAA occurs within 180 min in the presence of iron minerals, and the adsorption process conforms to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The isothermal adsorption of PAA by ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite agrees with the Redlich–Peterson model. The maximum adsorption capacities of PAA are 63.44 mg/g, 19.03 mg/g, and 26.27 mg/g for ferrihydrite, goethite, and hematite, respectively. Environmental factor experiments illustrated that an alkaline environment will significantly inhibit the adsorption of PAA by iron minerals. CO32−, SiO32−, and PO43− in the environment will also significantly reduce the adsorption performance of the three iron minerals. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by FTIR and XPS, which indicated that ligand exchange between the surface hydroxyl group and the arsine group leads to the formation of an Fe-O-As bond, and electrostatic attraction between the iron minerals and PAA played an important role in the adsorption. Lithomargic clay is generally found below the lateritic soil along the coastal belt of Karnataka. It is rich in silt content and dispersive in nature. This type of soil is liable to erosion and landslides. The lithomargic clay is largely found in the western coast of South India. At present, coastal belt of Udupi district is witnessing a lot of developments in terms of industry, infrastructures, and other activities. Lithomargic clay is a type of problematic soil, which needs a thorough study to make it suitable to sustain any engineering structure such as buildings, pavements, railways, dams. A characterization and mineralogical study is conducted to identify the presence of minerals and compounds for the various soil samples collected along the coastal belt of Udupi regions using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The primary minerals observed in majority of the regions are quartz, feldspar such as orthoclase, muscovite, and the secondary minerals formed by the decomposition and chemical alteration of primary minerals include sheet minerals such as kaolinite, halloysite, dickite, gibbsite, and illite in high proportions. The study also shows the presence of iron compounds such as fayalite, goethite, and siderite. The phenomenon of cracking and deterioration of iron ore particles is a widespread scientific problem in the field of mineral processing and metallurgy. In this paper, the thermal decomposition properties of iron ore were investigated by a non-isothermal method using thermogravimetric equipment, and the crack evolution behavior of iron ore within Fe-C melt was investigated experimentally, by scanning electron microscopy and Micro-CT. The results show that the start decomposition temperature of #2 iron ore is 292.7 °C, which is 37.3 °C higher compared to that of #1 iron ore, because of its smaller pores and the difficulty of water vapor diffusion. The initial decomposition of iron ore is the decomposition goethite to form water vapor, and as heat transfer continues, hematite particles break into smaller particles and decompose to form Fe3O4. During the smelting reduction process, the Crack index (CI) of #1 iron ore was 5.50% at 4 s, and the CI index increased to 23.54% when time was extended to 16 s, and the internal evolved from locally interconnected holes to cracked structure. This paper discusses colorants found in Tumulus MM, the tomb of King Midas or his father, at Gordion, the capital of the Phrygian kingdom. Chromophores, colorants, and auxiliaries are preserved largely independent of the textiles they once colored. The Tumulus MM textiles are now fragmentary due to the degradation processes that occurred inside the tomb chamber. For DHA 26 (Vienna, Austria, 2007), we discussed a group of golden-yellow fragments from Tumulus MM that appeared to be tabby cloth but were skeletal lattices of goethite, αFeOOH (yellow ochre), as identified by FTIR, with SEM/EDS, XRD with molybdenum Kα radiation, NIR, and Raman spectroscopy. The "dyeing" has been replicated using a patented method; originally it may have involved a controlled redox reaction, based on our preliminary experiments. Amidst the goethite lattices, some skeletal fragments were green, with near-black lines within the yarn spiral, identified as indigo by FTIR at the time. Other masses with colorations of red, orange/brown, and purple with deep red veins did not yield identifiable inorganic coloration profiles with SEM/EDS. A purple fragment (2003-Tx-6 Front) was assayed by ICP-MS for mordants and for bromine, but neither could be found. Recently, direct analysis in real time mass spectrometry (DART-MS) enabled us to successfully detect organic colorants. For one fragment, indoxyl, isatin, indigo, and leuco-indigo were identified. One striated red-to-brown mass (2003-Tx-3) contained alizarin, purpurin, xanthopurpurin, lucidin, and other madder substituents; it also contained indigo/isatin but neither indoxyl nor leuco-indigo. Other beige-brown masses like 2003-Tx-5 sometimes contained alizarin, xanthopurpurin, rubiadin, and lucidin but rarely purpurin or indigo-related compounds. The purple (2003-Tx-6) shared the madder analogues with browner hues. The versatility appears related to that found in Anatolian pile carpets and flat weaves. The yellow seal stone from northern Laos is one possible substitute for the Tianhuang Stone, the most famous Chinese seal stone, because of its similar yellow to orange-yellow appearance and the same main mineral composition. The colour causation of the yellow seal stone from northern Laos was studied. The samples' phase, micro-morphology and chemical components were studied by Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. The yellow seal stone from northern Laos is mainly composed of dickite, occasionally with minor impurity minerals, such as hematite, anatase, barite, diaspore and pyrite. Micro- to nano-sized iron oxides/hydroxides were observed and detected by SEM and EDS in the yellow to orange-yellow part of the samples. Moreover, these iron oxides/hydroxides were suggested to cause the yellow to orange-yellow in the seal stone from northern Laos. The UV-Vis spectrum and its second derivative, the Kubelka-Munk spectra, were used to identify and quantify hematite and goethite. The samples' colour parameters were obtained with the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) 1931 standard space. According to the observation of the samples and the results obtained from experiments and calculations, the colour of the yellow parts (L* = 33.56~47.99, a* = 0.35~3.65, b* = 4.55~9.89) correlated with goethite (goethite is about 0.175~0.671 g/kg, the content of hematite was too low to be figured out in the yellow parts). In contrast, the colour of the orange-yellow parts (L* = 33.99~46.27, a* = 3.98~12.39, b* = 8.04~22.14) was more closely related with the content of hematite (goethite is about 0.096~0.691 g/kg, hematite is about 0.258~2.383 g/kg). The results of correlation analysis also support that the contents of iron oxides or hydroxides influence the samples' colour. Therefore, it is suggested that micro- to nano-scaled hematite and goethite caused the colour of yellow and orange-yellow in the studied seal stone. The stibnite mineralization at Rizana (Kilkis ore district; Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province; northern Greece) occurs along a NE–SW-trending brittle shear-zone, which transects a two-mica and an augen-gneiss of the Vertiskos Unit. Barren Triassic A-type granites and satellite pegmatites and aplites, as well as Oligocene-Miocene plutonic, subvolcanic and volcanic rocks that are variably hydrothermally altered and mineralized, outcrop in the broader region. The mineralization appears as veins, discordant lodes and disseminations. Veins and discordant lodes exhibit massive and brecciated textures. Historic underground mining (1930s–1950s) produced 9000 t of stibnite ore, grading 40% Sb on average. The main ore mineral assemblage includes stibnite + berthierite + sphalerite + pyrite + chalcopyrite + native antimony and traces of wolframite, galena, tetrahedrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, realgar, native arsenic and native gold. Quartz, minor barite and ankerite are the gangue minerals. Sericitization and silicification developed along the shear-zone, forming hydrothermal halos of moderate intensity in the two-mica gneiss. Locally, valentinite, goethite and claudetite are present due to the supergene oxidation of the stibnite mineralization. Bulk ore geochemistry shows enrichments in specific elements including As, Au, Cd, Se, Tl and W. Fluid inclusion microthermometry showed that the mineralization was formed under a limited range of temperatures and salinities. The fluids had low to slightly moderate salinities (6.6–8.1 wt% equiv. A composite ferronematic system based on the nematic liquid crystal E7, doped with lath-like goethite magnetic nanoparticles of volume concentrations 10−3, 5 × 10−4, and 10−5, was investigated. Both surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and the magneto-optical effect were used to study the influence of magnetic nanoparticles on ferronematic liquid crystals' structural changes, focused above all on structural transitions. The responses of SAW attenuation and light transmission to external magnetic fields were investigated experimentally under linearly increasing/decreasing or jumped (time influence) magnetic fields, respectively. An investigation of temperature on structural changes was performed, as well. The experimental results validated the decrease in the threshold field of the ferronematic composites in comparison with the pure E7, as well as an increase in the transition temperature with the increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles. The effect of the nanoparticles' concentration on both total structural changes and residual attenuations at the vanishing magnetic field was also registered. The light transmission measurements confirmed the effect of the concentration of goethite nanoparticles on the resultant magneto-optical behavior, concerning both its stability and switching time.
