Background/Objectives: Given the importance of emotion recognition for communication purposes, and the impairment for such skill in CI users despite impressive language performances, the aim of the present study was to investigate the neural correlates of emotion recognition skills, apart from language, in adult unilateral CI (UCI) users during a music in noise (happy/sad) recognition task. Furthermore, asymmetry was investigated through electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythm, given the traditional concept of hemispheric lateralization for emotional processing, and the intrinsic asymmetry due to the clinical UCI condition. Methods: Twenty adult UCI users and eight normal hearing (NH) controls were recruited. EEG gamma and alpha band power was assessed as there is evidence of a relationship between gamma and emotional response and between alpha asymmetry and tendency to approach or withdraw from stimuli. The TAS-20 questionnaire (alexithymia) was completed by the participants. Results: The results showed no effect of background noise, while supporting that gamma activity related to emotion processing shows alterations in the UCI group compared to the NH group, and that these alterations are also modulated by the etiology of deafness. In particular, relative higher gamma activity in the CI side corresponds to positive processes, correlated with higher emotion recognition abilities, whereas gamma activity in the non-CI side may be related to positive processes inversely correlated with alexithymia and also inversely correlated with age; a correlation between TAS-20 scores and age was found only in the NH group. Conclusions: EEG gamma activity appears to be fundamental to the processing of the emotional aspect of music and also to the psychocognitive emotion-related component in adults with CI. Cochlear implants (CI) allow deaf patients to improve language perception and improving their emotional valence assessment. Electroencephalographic (EEG) measures were employed so far to improve CI programming reliability and to evaluate listening effort in auditory tasks, which are particularly useful in conditions when subjective evaluations are scarcely appliable or reliable. Unfortunately, the presence of CI on the scalp introduces an electrical artifact coupled to EEG signals that masks physiological features recorded by electrodes close to the site of implant. Currently, methods for CI artifact removal have been developed for very specific EEG montages or protocols, while others require many scalp electrodes. In this study, we propose a method based on the Multi-channel Wiener filter (MWF) to overcome those shortcomings. Nine children with unilateral CI and nine age-matched normal hearing children (control) participated in the study. EEG data were acquired on a relatively low number of electrodes (n = 16) during resting condition and during an auditory task. The obtained results obtained allowed to characterize CI artifact on the affected electrode and to significantly reduce, if not remove it through MWF filtering. Moreover, the results indicate, by comparing the two sample populations, that the EEG data loss is minimal in CI users after filtering, and that data maintain EEG physiological characteristics. Background and Clinical Significance: Currently, maxillary sinus floor elevation is one of the most common procedures used in implantology practice. Despite its predictability, the technique is not without complications, such as graft material dispersion in the sinus cavity, wound dehiscence, hematoma, fenestrations, oroantral fistulas, epistaxis, acute sinusitis, and Schneider membrane perforations. The treatment of the latter can be complex, and depending on its extent, surgery deferral may be necessary, leading to increased patient morbidity. Case Presentation: A patient with apical surgery underwent sinus floor elevation with a significant Schneider membrane perforation using a new approach involving titanium mesh, resorbable membrane, and xenograft. This allowed the continuation of surgery, reducing the number of interventions and patient morbidity. Conclusions: Despite limitations due to a small sample size, this case report demonstrates that addressing large Schneider membrane perforations and placing implants is effective and predictable using the technology and approach of mesh formwork with titanium. Background and Clinical Significance: Epithelial–myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare, low-grade malignant tumor of the salivary glands. It is characterized by a low malignancy potential, as indicated by its low rate of lymph node involvement and distant metastasis, and has a local recurrence rate of approximately 50%. Due to the rarity of EMC and the limited data available in the literature, there are no established treatment or follow-up guidelines. Case Presentation: We report the case of an 83-year-old man who presented with swelling in the left submandibular region, occurring 9 years following an initial diagnosis of EMC in the ipsilateral parotid gland. After radiological examinations and an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy, the patient underwent surgical excision of the lesion with a histological diagnosis of recurrence/metastasis of low-grade epithelial–myoepithelial carcinoma. Conclusions: This is the first documented case of loco-regional lymph node metastasis 9 years after an initial diagnosis of EMC of the parotid gland. Based on our experience, EMC of the parotid gland, even when diagnosed at an early stage, seems to require a long follow-up period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This preliminary in vitro study aims to evaluate the application of micro-CT in analyzing the microstructural coupling between dental implant fixtures and prosthetic abutments, with an emphasis on understanding the effectiveness and limitations of this technique in dental implantology. Materials and Methods: A search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library up to May 2024 identified eight relevant studies that examined different facets of dental implantology, such as osseointegration, implant stability, and the comparative accuracy of micro-CT versus other imaging techniques. A comparative micro-CT radiographic analysis was performed on five different implant fixtures with respective prosthetic and healing abutments, by using SkyScan1174 micro-CT. Results: The reviewed studies demonstrated that micro-CT is reliable for assessing bone quality, implant stability, and the microstructural integrity of dental implants. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) studies reveal bone–implant contact (BIC) ratios of 40–80%, bone volume per total volume (BV/TV) values of 20–60%, and detect microgaps as small as 0.3 µm, highlighting its high-resolution capability (5–10 µm) for detailed implant analysis. The comparative analysis of the implant fixtures analyzed the implant–abutment connection, highlighting the relevance of implant design for ensuring stability. Conclusions: Micro-CT analysis has proven to be a valuable tool for evaluating the intricate microstructural properties of dental implants, offering insights into implant stability, bone quality, and osseointegration. The literature reviewed highlights consistent findings that underscore micro-CT's accuracy and reliability in capturing high-resolution data, suggesting its potential as a standard imaging modality in implant research and clinical assessment. An overview of the 200 TW Frascati Laser for Acceleration and Multidisciplinary Experiments (FLAME) at the SPARC_LAB Test Facility at the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF-INFN) is presented. The FLAME laser is employed to investigate different laser–matter interaction schemes, i.e., electron acceleration and secondary radiation sources through Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA) or ion and proton generation through Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA), for a wide range of scientific areas including the biomedical applications. Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) and Paraoxonase 3 (PON3) are enzymes located on the surface of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and share similar antioxidant properties, possibly modulated by other proteins such as Myeloperoxidase (MPO), which drives the shift from functional to dysfunctional HDL. PON1 has been extensively studied in relation to Alzheimer's Disease (AD), but the role of PON3 remains unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, the study analyzed PON3 protein levels and PON1-arylesterase activity in 99 AD patients, 100 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 79 cognitively normal controls. The results showed that serum PON3 levels remained unchanged across all groups. In contrast, serum arylesterase activity was significantly reduced in both AD and MCI patients compared to controls (p < 0.001 for both comparisons). Surprisingly, there was no correlation between arylesterase activity and MPO protein concentration or activity. However, PON3 was found to have a significant positive correlation with both MPO concentration (r = 0.507, p < 0.0001) and MPO activity (r = 0.264, p < 0.01). In conclusion, we demonstrated for the first time that PON1 and PON3 have distinct relationships with AD, with only PON1 showing a decrease in activity in this disease, while PON3 levels remained unchanged. Background and Aims: Low back pain is a prevalent condition affecting 60–85% of individuals during their lifetime. Despite various proposed mechanisms, the etiology of low back pain remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of combining ultrasound-guided infiltrations with early rehabilitation in reducing pain and improving functional limitations in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted, reviewing data from January to April 2024 involving 40 patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain. Each patient received two cycles of ultrasound-guided lidocaine and corticosteroid infiltrations at the level of the posterior lower iliac spine, followed by 10 rehabilitation sessions. Patients were assessed at baseline (T0), after the first treatment cycle (T1), and after the second cycle (T2) using the Oswestry Disability Index, Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale, Roland Disability Questionnaire, and Numeric Rating Scale. Results: Significant improvements were observed across all assessment scales. The ODI scores decreased from 33.5 at baseline to 3.5 after treatment (p < 0.001). Similar reductions were noted in the QBPDS (from 61.5 to 10.3), RDQ (from 18 to 3.4), and NRS (from 7.4 to 1.3). The combination of ultrasound-guided infiltrations and early rehabilitation resulted in a significant reduction in pain and disability, with the most notable improvements occurring after the second treatment cycle. Conclusions: The integration of ultrasound-guided infiltrations with early rehabilitation is highly effective in managing chronic nonspecific low back pain, significantly reducing both pain and functional limitations. Power consumption is a significant challenge in the sustainability of computational science. The growing energy demands of increasingly complex simulations and algorithms lead to substantial resource use, which conflicts with global sustainability goals. This paper investigates the energy efficiency of different parallel implementations of a Cellular Potts model, which models cellular behavior through Hamiltonian energy minimization techniques, leveraging modern GPU architectures. By evaluating alternative solvers, it demonstrates that specific methods can significantly enhance computational efficiency and reduce energy use compared to traditional approaches. The results confirm notable improvements in execution time and energy consumption. In particular, the experiments show a reduction in terms of power of up to 53%, providing a pathway towards more sustainable high-performance computing practices for complex biological simulations. Background: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the therapeutic potential of probiotics in patients with halitosis and to assess whether probiotics can also be implemented as a preventative tool in oral health. Secondary objectives included the effect of probiotics on oral-health-related quality of life, as well as their safety. Materials and methods: An electronic literature search in Medline (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane library was carried out for the identification and selection of relevant randomized controlled trials. Eligibility was based on inclusion criteria, which included RCTs published after 2013, and the outcome variables were volatile sulfur compound (VSC) levels, organoleptic scores, plaque, or saliva samples to assess cariogenic bacteria counts and/or pH levels. Results: Out of 192 identified records, 16 randomized controlled trials were included. Ten of those studied the effects of probiotics on halitosis and the other six analyzed the effect of probiotics on oral health parameters, such as cariogenic bacteria counts, pH levels, and salivary flow and quality. A total of 921 patients were evaluated. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool version 2. Conclusions: Probiotics exhibit the potential for oral health management by reducing VSC levels, improving saliva quality, and enhancing oral-health-related quality of life. Combining probiotics with tongue scraping may sustain VSC reduction, while symbiotics show potential in reducing tongue coating. However, different bacterial strains have been used in the included studies; hence, the conclusions cannot be generalized, being one of the main limitations of this review. Future research should explore the probiotics' potential to persist in the oral cavity post-treatment and employ standardized methodologies for conclusive efficacy assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Nasal polyps (NPs) represent the end-stage manifestation of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), a relatively common pathological condition encountered in all ages of life. Methodology: The aim of our study was to evaluate the histological features and inflammatory cellular components of NPs in a retrospective cohort (143 cases) of pediatric, adult and elderly populations in order to discuss the possible morphological age-related differences statistically documented. Results: In the pediatric group, the inflammatory infiltrate presented many eosinophils mixed with lymphocytes, while in the adult population, lymphocytes and plasma cells were mainly evident, frequently with a perivascular distribution or with the formation of subepithelial lymphoid nodules. In the elderly population, inflammation was less evident and was associated with cavernous-like angecthatic structures with thrombotic stratification. Nearly all morphological findings exhibited statistically significant values among differently aged subgroups. Conclusions: Our results support the presence of histological specificities of NPs at different ages of life, providing new insight into the etiopathogenesis of NPs. The future role of biological therapies, mainly in cases refractory to already available standard medical and surgical treatments, may be analyzed by a prospective study using a larger cohort with a long-term evaluation also in relation to a possible relapse. The CardioMEMS HF System (Abbott, Abbott Park, IL) is the first FDA- and CE-Mark-approved device for monitoring patients with heart failure, significantly reducing hospitalizations and improving the quality of life for NYHA class III non-congenital adult patients. This device, implanted percutaneously, allows the direct monitoring of pulmonary arterial pressure with the wireless transfer of pressure data to the clinician, who can adjust the therapy remotely. Limited experience exists regarding its use in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). CardioMEMS device implantation is feasible and safe in selected adults and children with CHD. Background: the purpose of this systematic review was to assess the clinical and radiographic effect of subgingival-administered statins as an adjunct periodontal treatment in patients with periodontitis. Methods: Electronic literature searches in Medline/PubMed and the Cochrane Library were conducted to identify all relevant articles. Eligibility was based on inclusion criteria which included Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) published after 2010, where the periodontal variables were assessed before and after periodontal treatment in combination with a statin administration. The risk of bias was assessed with the ROBINS-2 tool. The outcome variables were probing depth, clinical attachment level, bleeding on probing, and bone fill in systematically healthy patients, patients with type 2 diabetes, and smokers. Results: Out of 119 potentially eligible articles, 18 randomized controlled trials were included with a total of 1171 participants. The data retrieved from the meta-analysis showed the positive effect that statins have as an adjunctive periodontal disease treatment. When comparing the different types of statins, the PD reduction in the Simvastatin group was significantly higher than the Atorvastatin group at 6 months and at 9 months, while no differences between statins were found for the rest of the outcomes. Over 66% of the articles presented an overall risk of bias with some concerns, making this a limitation of this present RCT. Conclusions: The adjunct administration of statins has proven to have a positive effect on the periodontium by improving both clinical and radiographic parameters by a considerable margin. Featured Application: Large scale laser operation. Complex laser use. The maximum energy at which a laser can be operated safely is a matter of paramount importance. This is patently related to laser induced damage. In the nanosecond regime, this poses a unique challenge, as it is not solely influenced by laser intensity or thermal load. Instead, it arises from the cumulative effects that includes those two factors. While extensive research has explored this dependence for various pulse lengths, the exploration of different longitudinal modes and temporal shapes is relatively limited. Our study aims to fill this gap by determining the safe operational fluence for any pulse shape, leveraging established dependencies on pulse duration. We propose a straightforward and adaptable method to ascertain these operational limits, independent of the type or origin of laser damage. Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is receiving increasing attention for its multiple end-uses; therefore, an improvement in its production is needed to meet the increased demand. In the present study, the effect of seed inoculation with two Trichoderma afroharzianum strains, T-AA and T-22, on plant growth and root morphology of hemp plants at sixth-leaf (S6) and tenth-leaf (S10) stages was assessed for two consecutive years (2020 and 2021). In addition, the ability of the two strains to enhance the accumulation of phenolic compounds in hemp leaves was also evaluated. The results obtained revealed the ability of T-22 to improve the growth and root morphology of hemp plants both in 2020 and 2021, although with different impact, probably ascribable to the different weather conditions in the two years. In 2020, the positive effects of T-22 were detected at S10 stage with significant increases in the shoot and root length (38% and 17%, respectively) and dried biomass (35% and 30%, respectively) compared to untreated plants. The total root surface area and the number of tips, forks, and crossings also increased significantly (24–36%) at this stage. In 2021, significant increases in the shoot length and dried biomass (40% and 30%, respectively) were observed at S6 stage, whereas root length and dried biomass increased significantly at S6 (55% and 47%, respectively) and S10 stage (121% and 40%, respectively). Significant increases in the total surface area and volume, as well as in the number of tips, forks, and crossings were also observed at both S6 and S10 stage (50–63% and 105–187%, respectively). Interestingly, in both years and at both stages, the two strains induced significant increases in the leaf accumulation of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity, which were greater in T-22- compared to T-AA-treated plants (18–102% and 13–34%, respectively). The results are discussed in light of the potential practical applications of T-22 as a biostimulant of hemp plant growth under favorable and unfavorable environmental conditions, and of both strains as promising tools for the improvement of the leaves' economic value as a source of health-promoting compounds. Crohn's and ulcerative colitis are common conditions associated with inflammatory bowel disease as well as intestinal flora and epithelial barrier dysfunction. A novel fermented Lactobacillus brevis (AL0035) herein assayed in a trinitro benzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis mice model after oral administration significantly counteracted the body weight loss and improves the disease activity index and histological injury scores. AL0035 significantly decreased the mRNA and protein expression of different pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFalpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-12, IFN-gamma) and enhanced the expression of IL-10. In addition, the probiotic promoted the expression of tight junction proteins, such as ZO-1, keeping the intestinal mucosal barrier function to attenuate colitis symptoms in mice. Markers of inflammation cascade such as myeloperoxidase (MPO) and PPAR-gamma measured in the colon were also modified by AL0035 treatment. AL0035 was also able to reduce different lymphocyte markers' infiltration in the colon (GATA-3, T-Bet, NK1.1) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1/CCL2), a key chemokine involved in the migration and infiltration of monocytes/macrophages in the immunological surveillance of tissues and inflammation. In colonic microbiota profile analysis through 16S rRNA sequencing, AL0035 increased the microbial diversity depleted by TNBS administration and the relative abundance of the Lactobacillaceae and Lachnospiraceae families, whereas it decreased the abundance of Proteobacteria. Altogether, these data indicated that AL0035 could lower the severity of colitis induced by TNBS by regulating inflammatory cytokines, increasing the expression of tight junction proteins and modulating intestinal microbiota, thus preventing tissue damage induced by colitis. Unhealthy dietary habits play a key role in the pathogenesis of nephrolithiasis (NL). The aims of this case–control study were to evaluate (i) the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet (MD) and the dietary salt intake in stone-forming patients (SF), (ii) the relationship occurring between MD adherence, salt intake and NL-related metabolic risk factors in SF, and (iii) the impact of combined high MD adherence and low salt intake on NL susceptibility. From 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019, we recruited all SF consecutively referred to the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) center of Federico II University, and at least two control subjects without a personal history of NL, age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched to SF (NSF). All study participants were interviewed using the validated MEDI-LITE and MINISAL questionnaires. In an SF subgroup, the NL-related metabolic risk factors were also evaluated. SF showed a lower MD adherence and a higher salt intake compared with NSF. The NL susceptibility decreased by 36% [OR: 0.64 (0.59–0.70); p < 0.01] for each point of increase in MEDI-LITE score, while it increased by 13% [OR: 1.13 (1.03–1.25); p = 0.01] for each point of increase in MINISAL score. The SF prevalence was higher among subjects showing combined low MD adherence and high salt intake. In SF, the MEDI-LITE score directly correlated with 24 h-citraturia, whereas the MINISAL score directly correlated with urinary sodium and uric acid excretion. The Industry 5.0 paradigm has a human-centered vision of the industrial scenario and foresees a close collaboration between humans and robots. Industrial manufacturing environments must be easily adaptable to different task requirements, possibly taking into account the ergonomics and production line flexibility. Therefore, external sensing infrastructures such as cameras and motion capture systems may not be sufficient or suitable as they limit the shop floor reconfigurability and increase setup costs. In this paper, we present the technological advancements leading to the realization of ProxySKIN, a skin-like sensory system based on networks of distributed proximity sensors and tactile sensors. This technology is designed to cover large areas of the robot body and to provide a comprehensive perception of the surrounding space. ProxySKIN architecture is built on top of CySkin, a flexible artificial skin conceived to provide robots with the sense of touch, and arrays of Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors. We provide a characterization of the arrays of proximity sensors and we motivate the design choices that lead to ProxySKIN, analyzing the effects of light interference on a ToF, due to the activity of other sensing devices. The obtained results show that a large number of proximity sensors can be embedded in our distributed sensing architecture and incorporated onto the body of a robotic platform, opening new scenarios for complex applications. A quantitative analytical method for PFAS determination in airborne particulate matter (PM) has been developed using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), allowing for the determination of 33 compounds. The procedure was applied to ambient PM10 with limits of quantification for PFAS in the fg m−3 range. PM10 samples collected during a year-long campaign conducted in an urban site in Umbria (Central Italy) have been characterized for their PFAS content. Among the seven detected PFASs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) were the most abundant compounds. Furthermore, this work allowed us to obtain the first seasonal trend of airborne PFASs in Central Italy. Seasonal trend analysis shows that PFAS concentration in the atmosphere peaks in summertime. A comparison with trends of other relevant primary and secondary air pollutants determined at the sampling site suggests a secondary nature of the observed PFAS, which are formed in the atmosphere directly from gaseous precursors and can contribute to worsen the urban air quality in summertime. Diphenolic acid, or 4,4-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)pentanoic acid, represents one of the potentially most interesting bio-products obtainable from the levulinic acid supply-chain. It represents a valuable candidate for the replacement of bisphenol A, which is strongly questioned for its toxicological issues. Diphenolic acid synthesis involves the condensation reaction between phenol and levulinic acid and requires the presence of a Brønsted acid as a catalyst. In this review, the state of the art related to the catalytic issues of its synthesis have been critically discussed, with particular attention to the heterogeneous systems, the reference benchmark being represented by the homogeneous acids. The main opportunities in the field of heterogeneous catalysis are deeply discussed, as well as the bottlenecks to be overcome to facilitate diphenolic acid production on an industrial scale. The regioselectivity of the reaction is a critical point because only the p,p′-isomer is of industrial interest; thus, several strategies aiming at the improvement of the selectivity towards this isomer are considered. The future potential of adopting alkyl levulinates, instead of levulinic acid, as starting materials for the synthesis of new classes of biopolymers, such as new epoxy and phenolic resins and polycarbonates, is also briefly considered. Background: The World Health Organization has defined vaccine hesitancy as behavior influenced by several factors, including trust in the vaccine itself or its provider or the perceived need for vaccination. The aim of this study was to investigate the factors influencing the willingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine among the employees and healthcare professionals of the Central Tuscany Local Health Authority (CT-LHA) in Italy. Methods: From July to October 2022, a cross-sectional study was conducted. An online questionnaire was administered to 7000 employees of the CT-LHA. The questionnaire analyzed the factors that influenced receiving the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. The sample was stratified by gender, age, type of occupation (healthcare or non-healthcare workers), and seniority. Incomplete questionnaires were excluded. A chi-squared test was performed through STATA. The significance level was set at 95%. Results: Of the questionnaires administered, 1885 (26.9%) questionnaires were eligible for the study. In the previous vaccination campaign, the healthcare workers (HCWs) considered the vaccine used by CT-LHA as safe, in contrast to non-healthcare workers (N-HCWs), who considered it less secure (p < 0.05). The HCWs showed a higher propensity for vaccine safety to receive the booster dose than N-HCWs. N-HCWs appeared to be less affected by an updated booster dose than HCWs (p < 0.05). Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is characterized by a type 2 pattern of inflammation resulting in the production of some cytokines. Dupilumab radically changes the treatment of CRSwNP, but, considering its recent approval, it may be useful to evaluate its safety profile in a real-world setting. This work aimed to prospectively highlight the effectiveness and safety profile of dupilumab in patients with CRSwNP enrolled in the Otorhinolaryngology Unit of the University Hospital of Messina. An observational cohort study was carried out considering all patients treated with dupilumab. A descriptive analysis was conducted reporting all demographic characteristics, endoscopic evaluations, and symptom conditions. A total of 66 patients were treated with dupilumab, but three patients were excluded due to a lack of adherence during the observational period. A statistically significant reduction in the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT-22) and nasal polyps score (NPS) was shown at the 6th and 12th months compared to baseline values (SNOT-22, −37 and −50, p < 0.001 for both comparisons; NPS, −3 and −4, p < 0.001 for both comparisons). During the follow-up, eight patients (12.7%) had a reaction at the site of injection, and seven (11.1%) had transient hypereosinophilia. Given the optimal treatment response and the minimal adverse effects observed, clinicians should consider dupilumab a safe and effective treatment. The production of oxygenated bio-additives for traditional fuels represents a key challenge due to their depletion in the near-future and their positive contribution to the reduction in environmental pollution. The present study considers the synthesis of 1-hexanol/hexyl hexanoate mixtures, two oxygenated Diesel bio-additives produced through the hydrogenation of hexanoic acid, obtainable from the fermentation of a wide variety of waste biomasses. In our case, crude hexanoic acid was produced through the fermentation of grape pomace, an abundant Italian agrifood waste. Commercial 5 wt% Re/γ-Al2O3 was adopted for the catalytic hydrogenation of crude hexanoic acid, and the support acidity allowed the tuning of the reaction selectivity toward the formation of hexyl hexanoate, instead of 1-hexanol, reaching yields of 40 and 25 mol%, respectively. The effects of each bio-additive on Diesel engine performance and exhaust emissions (soot, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons) were evaluated, highlighting noteworthy positive effects especially on the reduction in carbon monoxide and soot emissions, if compared with those of Diesel fuel alone. Similar promising performances were achieved by employing Diesel blend mixtures of 1-hexanol/hexyl hexanoate, mimicking typical compositions of the rhenium-catalyzed post-hydrogenation mixtures. Even in such cases, 1-hexanol/hexyl hexanoate mixtures can be blended with commercial Diesel fuel, up to high loadings currently not yet investigated (20 vol%), without altering the engine performances and, again, significantly lowering soot and carbon monoxide emissions by more than 40%. This work highlights the possibility of obtaining such oxygenated bio-additives starting from waste through to a fully sustainable process and proves their beneficial effects on the reduction in exhaust emissions with no changes in engine performance. Cholelithiasis has a major impact on global health and affects an average of 20% of the Western population. The main risk factors are females, age over 40 years, obesity and pregnancy. Most of the time it is asymptomatic, but when there are symptoms, they are generally nonspecific. Bile was considered sterile, but today it is known that it contains a complex bacterial flora, which causes biofilm in the gallbladder and gallstones. Among the main bacteria associated with cholelithiasis are Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, species of Enterococcus spp. and Acinetobacter spp. Antibiotic prophylaxis is used in an attempt to reduce postoperative infections, especially at the surgical site. However, some authors found no relationship between the use of antibiotic prophylaxis and a lower risk of surgical site infection. Thus, the aim of this double-blind randomized clinical trial was to compare the existence or not of bacteriobilia in patients at low anesthetic risk who underwent videolaparoscopic cholecystectomy, and its correlation with the use of prophylactic antibiotics. This study included 40 patients between 18 and 65 years old, diagnosed with cholelithiasis, symptomatic or not, with low anesthetic risk classified by the American Society of Anesthesiology in ASA I or ASA II, without complications or previous manipulation of the bile duct, who underwent elective video cholecystectomy, divided into two groups: Experimental Group A (n = 20), which received 2 g of Cephalotin (first-generation Cephalosporin, Keflin®, ABL antibiotics, Cosmópolis, Brazil) during anesthetic induction, and Control Group B (n = 20), where no antibiotics were administered until bile collection. After the procedure, a bile sample was collected and culture and antibiogram were performed. In the sample, 22 (55%) were classified as ASA I and 18 (45%) as ASA II. It was observed that 81.8% of the patients who had a positive culture did not use antibiotics, against 18.2% of those who used prophylaxis. When comparing patients regarding anesthetic risk, ASA I patients had a positive culture in 9.1% of cases, against 90.9% in patients classified as ASA II. It was concluded that patients with higher anesthetic risk (ASA II) have a higher chance of bacteriobilia and benefit from antibiotic prophylaxis when compared to patients with lower anesthetic risk (ASA I). Background: Low coverage of influenza vaccination in nursing home (NH) staff may be attributed to factors such as vaccine confidence (VC) and vaccine literacy (VL). Our study aimed to evaluate the role of VL and VC in predicting the intention to get the influenza vaccine in a sample of employees of NHs in Tuscany, Italy. Methods: Data from staff members in Tuscany were collected using an online questionnaire that examined influenza vaccination history, intentions, demographic information, health status, and VL. Statistical analyses explored the relationships between VC, VL, and vaccination intentions. Results: The study included 1794 respondents, (86.3%) and assistants/aides (58.1%), with a median age of 46 years. The intention to get vaccinated was significantly higher among those with health risk conditions, and there was a positive association between VC and VL, specifically its interactive/critical component. The mediation analysis showed that VC completely mediated the relationship between VL and the intention to get vaccinated, with significant effects observed in different subgroups. Conclusions: VC is a key factor that mediates the effect of VL on vaccine intention. These results suggest that interventions aimed at improving VL alone may not be sufficient to increase vaccine uptake unless VC is also addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Paratuberculosis is a chronic incurable bacterial infection widespread all over the world in ruminants. The disease impacts animal health and welfare and causes significant economic losses in animal productions. This survey investigated the spread of paratuberculosis in northern Italian dairy goat farming by serological testing. Contextually, a welfare and biosecurity assessment through a standardized protocol was conducted. More than half (19 out of 33, 58%) of the investigated farms were infected, with a mean intra-herd prevalence of 7.4%. Welfare assessment showed quite favorable average results, although in 24% of the farms the welfare level was poor. On the contrary, 58% of the farms showed an unsatisfactory biosecurity level. Our results provide information on the spread of paratuberculosis in dairy goat farms of northern Italy. For this relevant disease, official prevalence data in goat breeding are still scarce. Moreover, the present work highlighted the low level of biosecurity measures implemented by the farmers. Paratuberculosis is a notable infectious disease of ruminants. Goats appear to be particularly susceptible. The survey aimed to investigate the spread of paratuberculosis in Italian goat farming and evaluate whether the presence of the disease could be influenced by welfare and biosecurity deficiencies. A serological survey for paratuberculosis in 33 dairy farms in northern Italy was conducted. Contextually, animal welfare and biosecurity were assessed, using a standardized protocol of 36 welfare indicators and 15 biosecurity indicators which assigns to each farm a welfare and biosecurity score from 0 (any application) to 100% (full application). An overall result of less than 60% was considered insufficient. Nineteen farms (58%) tested positive for paratuberculosis, with a mean intra-herd seroprevalence of 7.4%. Total welfare ranged from 39.56 to 90.7% (mean 68.64%). Biosecurity scores ranged from 10.04 to 90.01% (mean 57.57%). Eight farms (24%) showed poor welfare conditions (welfare score < 60%) and 19 (58%) an unsatisfactory biosecurity condition (biosecurity score < 60%). With respect to the explorative character of the study, an indicative association between seven welfare and biosecurity indicators and paratuberculosis seropositivity was identified. The presence of paratuberculosis in northern Italy dairy goat farms was confirmed. This study aimed to evaluate the microbial oil production by three selected strains, Mortierella isabellina, Cunninghamella echinulata, and Thamnidium elegans, after fermentation of an enzymatic hydrolysate from alkali pre-treated giant reed biomass, in comparison to a semi-synthetic medium, at three increasing nitrogen supplementation levels (0.14, 0.25, and 0.47 g/L). M. isabellina showed the fastest sugar consumption, the highest final cell and oil concentrations (10.9 and 5.6 g/L, respectively), as well as the highest cellular oil content, oil yield/g sugar consumed, and oil productivity (63.4%, 0.19 g/g, and 1 g/L/day, respectively) in the giant reed hydrolysate. The oil yield tended to decrease with an increasing nitrogen content in the cultures. Oleic acid was the most copious fatty acid in the oil for all the fungi. On the contrary, T. elegans exhibited the poorest performances. In particular, M. isabellina showed, respectively, the highest and lowest values of oleic and γ-linolenic acid (52.2 and 3.1%, on average). In comparison, C. echinulata and T. elegans showed much higher γ-linolenic acid content (15.3 and 21.6%, on average). Notably, the C. echinulata cultures showed by far the highest γ-linolenic acid concentration in both substrates (345 and 595 g/L in the giant reed hydrolysate and in the synthetic medium, respectively). Finally, the estimated biodiesel properties of all the oils fell within the limits of the U.S. standards, while the oil of M. isabellina only respected the tighter limits fixed by the E.U. regulations. Simple Summary: The condemnation of whole carcasses after ante-mortem or post-mortem inspection represents the failure of a long period of challenging work, and it is regarded as a highly undesirable event. Therefore, the estimation of carcass condemnation is valuable for preserving both consumers' health and pig farming profitability. The present survey aimed to report data about the condemnation of porcine carcasses in an Italian high-throughput slaughterhouse over 2 years. A total of 2,062,278 pigs were slaughtered during the study period. Overall, 1362 pigs were considered unfit for slaughtering after ante-mortem inspection, mostly because of death during transportation or in resting pens, after their arrival at the abattoir. Moreover, 2007 carcasses were condemned after post-mortem inspection, mostly due to diffuse peritonitis, disseminated abscesses, slaughter chain faults, and erysipelas. The critical analysis of the data underlines the need to further standardize ante-mortem and post-mortem judgements, in order to best exploit the abattoir as a useful source of epidemiological information. Ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection at slaughter are performed by Official Veterinarians and it is essential to identify alterations/lesions, which can make organs/carcasses unsuitable for human consumption. Obviously, carcass condemnation must be regarded as a highly undesirable event for the entire swine industry chain, as it represents the total failure of a long period of challenging work. Therefore, it seems valuable to estimate the prevalence and causes of carcasses condemnation, in order to preserve consumers' health and pig farming profitability. Bearing that in mind, the present study aimed at providing a reliable picture of the condemnation of porcine carcasses in Italy, with a special emphasis being placed upon pathological findings. Data were collected in a high-throughput abattoir located in northern Italy, where a total of 2,062,278 pigs were slaughtered during the period of study (2021–2022). Overall, 1362 pigs were considered unfit for slaughtering after ante-mortem inspection, mostly because of death during transportation or in resting pens, after their arrival at the abattoir. Moreover, 2007 carcasses were condemned after post-mortem inspection. The most common causes of condemnation were severe and diffuse peritonitis, disseminated abscesses, jaundice, and erysipelas. Background and Objectives: Post-COVID-19 syndrome is commonly used to describe signs and symptoms that continue or develop after acute COVID-19 for more than 12 weeks. The study aimed to evaluate a treatment strategy in patients with adhesive capsulitis (phase 1) developed in post-COVID-19 syndrome. Materials and Methods: The method used was an interventional pilot study in which 16 vaccinated patients presenting with the clinical and ultrasound features of adhesive capsulitis (phase 1) developed during post-COVID-19 syndrome were treated with infiltrative hydrodistension therapy under ultrasound guidance associated with early rehabilitation treatment. Results: Sixteen patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome treated with ultrasound-guided infiltration and early rehabilitation treatment showed an important improvement in active joint ROM after 10 weeks, especially in shoulder elevation and abduction movements. The VAS mean score before the treatment was 6.9 ± 1.66. After 10 weeks of treatment, the VAS score was 1 ± 0.63. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that the management of adhesive capsulitis (phase 1) developed in post-COVID-19 syndrome, as conducted by physiotherapists in a primary care setting using hydrodistension and a rehabilitation protocol, represented an effective treatment strategy. Despite the high prevalence of late-onset sepsis (LOS) in neonatal intensive care units, a reliable diagnosis remains difficult. This prospective, multicenter cohort study aimed to identify biomarkers early to rule out the diagnosis of LOS in 230 neonates ≥7 days of life with signs of suspected LOS. Blood levels of eleven protein biomarkers (PCT, IL-10, IL-6, NGAL, IP-10, PTX3, CD14, LBP, IL-27, gelsolin, and calprotectin) were measured. Patients received standard of care blinded to biomarker results, and an independent adjudication committee blinded to biomarker results assigned each patient to either infected, not infected, or unclassified groups. Performances of biomarkers were assessed considering a sensitivity of at least 0.898. The adjudication committee classified 22% of patients as infected and all of these received antibiotics. A total of 27% of the not infected group also received antibiotics. The best biomarkers alone were IL-6, IL-10, and NGAL with an area under the curve (95% confidence interval) of 0.864 (0.798–0.929), 0.845 (0.777–0.914), and 0.829 (0.760–0.898), respectively. The best combinations of up to four biomarkers were PCT/IL-10, PTX3/NGAL, and PTX3/NGAL/gelsolin. The best models of biomarkers could have identified not infected patients early on and avoided up to 64% of unjustified antibiotics. At the onset of clinical suspicion of LOS, additional biomarkers could help the clinician in identifying non-infected patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starting from the late 1980's, scanning probe microscopy has progressively diffused in Italy until today. In this paper, we provide a brief account of the main historical events and a current picture of the distribution of the active groups. A survey was prepared by LimeSurvey, made of six sections asking for personal and institutional data, human resources, equipment available, fields of interest, research projects, educational/dissemination activities, and two relevant publications in the last six years. It turns out that the Italian community includes more than seventy groups and two companies. It is widely diffused, although mostly concentrated near large academic and research institutions, often in locations where prominent Italian researchers have operated. This community is active in many scientific fields and can produce research of high international quality. It shows a wide competence, as proven by the list of research works published in journals ranked within the top 20% class. The diffusion of SPM microscopes in industry is still sporadic, possibly due to extensive collaborations between the research institutions and industries themselves. Although not completely devoid of risk, pregnancy can be managed in virtually all patients affected by even the most complex forms of congenital heart disease. It is not however advisable in patients with any form of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Pregnancy is even manageable in patients with univentricular heart converted to Fontan circulation. A personalised risk stratification should be performed, and patients affected by advanced NYHA functional class appropriately warned of the potential risks. In this setting, metabolomics might represent a novel tool for use in conducting personalised risk stratification. All pregnancies, particularly those at higher risk, should be managed in a tertiary care centre capable of providing the necessary assistance to both the mother and infant. With a few rare exceptions, vaginal delivery is to be preferred over caesarean section due to the lower degree of maternal and foetal complications. Simple Summary: Wildlife monitoring plans are not uniformly applied in all European countries, even if the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) identified passive surveillance of wildlife as the strategy of choice to investigate the health status of wild animals. The plan in use in the Emilia-Romagna region (Northern Italy) for the past 11 years has allowed for the collection of a large amount of data on the wild boar population. Research has been conducted on diseases for which the wild boar could be a reservoir and/or source of infection for domestic pigs due to their increasingly frequent interfaces (trichinellosis, tuberculosis, brucellosis, african swine fever, classical swine fever, Aujeszky's disease, swine vesicular disease, and swine influenza A). Although the results do not allow us to make inferences about the resident population due to the sampling method and sample size, they still give us some indications about the strengths and weaknesses of the plan itself. For instance, an active search for carcasses on the territory should be implemented. In order to improve surveillance activities, it would also be desirable to increase the harmonization of sample collection schemes and data organization from a One Health perspective, as recommended by the WOAH. In recent years, the growth of wild ungulates has increased the focus on their health monitoring. In particular, the health status of wild boars is relevant for the economic impact on the pig industry. The Emilia-Romagna region activated a wildlife monitoring plan to better evaluate the health status of the wild boar population. Between 2011 and 2021, samples of found dead and hunted wild boar have been examined for trichinellosis, tuberculosis, brucellosis, african swine fever, classical swine fever, Aujeszky's disease, swine vesicular disease, and swine influenza A. Trichinella britovi was identified in 0.001% of the examined wild boars; neither M. bovis nor M. tuberculosis were found in M. tuberculosis complex positive samples; 2.3% were positive for Brucella suis; 29.4% of the sera were positive for Aujeszky's disease virus; and 0.9% of the samples were positive for swine influenza A virus. With an uncertain population estimate, the number of animals tested, the number of positives, and the sampling method do not allow us to make many inferences but suggest the need to implement and strengthen the existing surveillance activity, as it seems to be the only viable alternative for safeguarding animal and human health. Pelvic radiation disease (PRD), a frequent side effect in patients with abdominal/pelvic cancers treated with radiotherapy, remains an unmet medical need. Currently available preclinical models have limited applications for the investigation of PRD pathogenesis and possible therapeutic strategies. In order to select the most effective irradiation protocol for PRD induction in mice, we evaluated the efficacy of three different locally and fractionated X-ray exposures. Using the selected protocol (10 Gy/day × 4 days), we assessed PRD through tissue (number and length of colon crypts) and molecular (expression of genes involved in oxidative stress, cell damage, inflammation, and stem cell markers) analyses at short (3 h or 3 days after X-ray) and long (38 days after X-rays) post-irradiation times. The results show that a primary damage response in term of apoptosis, inflammation, and surrogate markers of oxidative stress was found, thus determining a consequent impairment of cell crypts differentiation and proliferation as well as a local inflammation and a bacterial translocation to mesenteric lymph nodes after several weeks post-irradiation. Changes were also found in microbiota composition, particularly in the relative abundance of dominant phyla, related families, and in alpha diversity indices, as an indication of dysbiotic conditions induced by irradiation. Fecal markers of intestinal inflammation, measured during the experimental timeline, identified lactoferrin, along with elastase, as useful non-invasive tools to monitor disease progression. Droughts are complex natural phenomena with multifaceted impacts, and a thorough drought impact assessment should entail a suite of adequate modelling tools and also include observational data, thus hindering the feasibility of such studies at large scales. In this work we present a methodology that tackles this obstacle by narrowing down the study area to a smaller subset of potential drought hot-spots (i.e., areas where drought conditions are expected to be exacerbated, based on future climate projections). We achieve this by exploring a novel interpretation of a well-established meteorological drought index that we link to the hydrological drought status of a catchment by calibrating its use on the basis of streamflow observational data. We exemplify this methodology over 25 sub-catchments pertaining to the Adige catchment. At the regional level, our findings highlight how the response to meteorological drought in Alpine catchments is complex and influenced by both the hydrological properties of each catchment and the presence of water storage infrastructures. The proposed methodology provides an interpretation of the hydrologic behavior of the analyzed sub-catchments in line with other studies, suggesting that it can serve as a reliable tool for identifying potential drought hot-spots in large river basins. Arundo donax L samples, before or after aqueous extraction to remove extractives, were subjected to chemical fractionation in H2SO4-catalyzed mixtures of 1-butanol and water. The partial miscibility of 1-butanol and water at room temperature allowed the separation of the three major feedstock components in separate streams (lignin, accumulated in the 1-butanol-rich phase; hemicellulose-derived products, accumulated in the aqueous acidic phase; and cellulose, present in the solid phase). The effects of selected variables (temperature, catalyst concentration, reaction time and 1-butanol content of the reaction media) on variables measuring the solid recovery yield and the compositions of phases from fractionation were measured. Using water-extracted A. donax L as a substrate, the best operational conditions enabled 93.2% hemicellulose removal and 85.4% delignification with limited cellulose solubilization (15%).
