Ecuadorian cocoa possesses important organoleptic characteristics such as aroma and flavor, called fine and aromatic cocoa. The objective of this study was to evaluate the initial growth responses of young cocoa seedlings to glyphosate in a dose progression in 45 cocoa plants (5 months old), which were transplanted into pots with substrate adjusted to pH 6.0–6.5. Glyphosate doses (0 to 904 g e.e. ha−1) were applied every two weeks, evaluating the impact at 30 and 60 days post-application. Data on shikimate accumulation parameters, chlorophyll content and PSII quantum efficiency were subjected to multivariate analysis using a three-dimensional scatter plot. The results indicated that high concentrations of glyphosate contributed to higher shikimate concentration and lower PSII quantum efficiency. The findings for the variables crop damage, stem height and stem diameter were evaluated by ANOVA. Similarities were reported between the results of the variables height and diameter, and significant differences (p < 0.05) in the variable crop damage for all treatments were also reported. In terms of phytotoxic reaction and growth parameters, the most efficient treatment was DO4, since the seedlings with this dosage showed a low percentage of damage (10%) and the best indices in terms of height and diameter. The least efficient treatment was D15. The control plants (DO1) showed a crop damage of >50% because the absence of control favored weed proliferation. These indications highlight the need to adjust glyphosate doses according to the specific needs of each crop and the development stage of the plant in order to reduce negative effects and maximize potential benefits. In this work, extracts from the pulp, peel, and seed of Manilkara zapota were obtained via lyophilization and oven drying. Bromatological analyses were performed to investigate variabilities in the nutritional content of fruits after nine post-harvest days. The phytochemical content of fruits was assessed by gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID), and their biological performance was studied using in vitro antibacterial and antioxidant assays (DPPH and ABTS) and in vivo toxicity models. Molecular docking was implemented to evaluate the interaction between polar compounds from chicozapote fruits with receptors involved in the pathogenesis of bacterial strains. Results revealed that water or soluble solids content did not vary after post-harvest. It was demonstrated that lyophilization or oven-drying approaches influenced the insoluble, total dietary fiber and digestible carbohydrates among samples. According to GC-FID analysis, it was observed that lyophilization and oven-drying methods also altered the content of myristic and pentadecanoic acids among the obtained extracts. It was noted that the antibacterial and antioxidant activities of extracts were weak due to their MIC (>1000 μg/mL) and IC50 (>2000 μg/mL) values. Still, the toxicity of extracts was poor against Artemia salina nauplii. In silico evaluation unveiled that polar compounds in M. zapota fruits possess a high binding affinity towards the DNA gyrase B of the cultured strains. This study expands the scientific evidence regarding the influence of distinct extraction methods on the nutritional and nutraceutical content of native fruits and the importance of considering additional approaches to enhance their bioactivities. Protected sites managed by indigenous people have been used for decades to conserve natural resources. These sites can be considered "conservation islands" and can maintain high biodiversity. This study explores the diversity and structure of medium and large mammals in (1) four protected natural areas in Oaxaca, Mexico, and (2) two different conservation strategies: one protected natural area (PNA) and three Voluntary Conservation Areas (VCAs). Data from 30 camera traps installed by community monitoring between 2013 and 2019 were used. A total of 29,304 camera days were accumulated in the Central Valleys and the Western Mountains and Valleys province. A total of 60,725 photographic records were analyzed, resulting in 13,471 independent events. Twenty-four species of wild mammals were documented, including endangered species. VCA showed higher species richness compared to PNA. Odocoileus virginianus was the most dominant in PNA, while Dicotyles angulatus was most dominant in VCA. We found differences in species richness between the four sites and between the two conservation strategies. Both conservation strategies are effective in maintaining mammal richness. We consider that these sites can serve as conservation islands that, in turn, can inter-connect landscapes and serve as potential biological corridors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the association between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontal disease. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis of the scientific literature was carried out based on the recommendations of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). We analyzed all studies that evaluated the relationship between the chronic inflammatory diseases through the response to non-surgical periodontal treatment, comparing the values of CAL (Clinical Attachment Level) for PD (periodontal disease) and DAS28 for RA. A total of three databases were searched in the literature search: Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. After eliminating duplicate articles and applying certain inclusion criteria, of the 29 articles found, a total of 6 were included in the present study. Results: A statistically significant difference in mean reduction of −0.56 mm was obtained for CAL, with a 95% confidence interval of the difference between −0.82 and −0.31 (z-test = −4.33; p-value = 0.001) in favor of the periodontal treatment group. The heterogeneity of the meta-analysis was slight (I2 = 39% and Q = 8.19; p-value = 0.146). For DAS28, treatment showed a mean reduction of −0.39 DAS points, with a 95% CI between −0.46 and −0.31 (z-test = −10.3; p-value < 0.001) among patients with PD and RA. Conclusions: The present study shows how the control of periodontal disease through non-surgical periodontal treatment can reduce the severity of RA. Silicate agrominerals (SA) may be sustainable soil amendments that can minimize dependence on conventional fertilizers (CF). We evaluated the residual effects of SA application as a source of Si and as a soil remineralizer, using soils with contrasting chemical-physical features cultivated with soybean. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions and treatments were arranged in a 5 × 2 + 2 factorial scheme: five rates of SA, two soils in addition to CF. The soil was incubated before cultivation, followed by the sequential sowing of corn and soybean. At the R4 phenological stage, when the pods were fully developed, soybean plants were harvested for anatomical leaf tissue analysis and P, Ca, Mg, and Si accumulation. After harvest, the soil was analyzed. Application of SA rates reduced potential acidity (H + Al) and exchangeable acidity (Al3+) and increased soil pH, sum of bases (SB), cation-exchange capacity (CEC), and base saturation (BS), in addition to promoting the nutrient's availability and Si. Stomatal density was higher on the adaxial face of plants cultivated in the medium-textured soil. Currently, a global health crisis is being caused by microbial resistance, in which Acinetobacter baumannii plays a crucial role, being considered the highest-priority microorganism by the World Health Organization (WHO) for discovering new antibiotics. As a result, phytochemicals have emerged as a potential alternative to combat resistant strains, since they can exert antimicrobial activity through various mechanisms and, at the same time, represent a more natural and safe option. This study analyzes the antimicrobial effects of guava leaf extract in ten clinical isolates of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) A. baumannii, using the agar diffusion technique and the microdilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). Additionally, possible improvements in antimicrobial activity after the purification of polyphenolic compounds and potential synergy with the antibiotic gentamicin are examined in this research. Moreover, the effect of the plant extract in cell line A549 derived from lung tissue was also evaluated. The extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against all the strains studied, and the purification of polyphenols along with the combination with gentamicin improved the extract activity. The presence of the plant extract induced morphological changes in the lung cells after 24 h of exposure. Therefore, Psidium guajava L. leaf extract is a potential antimicrobial agent. Nevertheless, there is a lot to know about air pollutants in Mexico's largest cities, like San Luis Potosi City, which is one of the 12 most crowded cities and is expected to grow in the next years; however, there is little information about air pollutant levels mainly particulate matter in their regulated size fractions (PM10 or PM2.5), and its main component of the Organic fraction: Black Carbon (BC), which is especially important because of its chemical properties and their effects on human health, air pollution, and climate change. This work presents a one-year BC monitoring in the northern part of the city (2018–2019) and another one-year BC monitoring in the southern area (2019–2020) during the health contingency situation due to the SARX-CoV-2 virus to obtain direct equivalent black carbon (eBC) concentrations and their main fractions related to fossil fuel and biomass burning using aethalometer AE-33, as well as other air pollutants concentrations measured at the same periods by the governmental local monitoring network (SEGAM). At the North, BC mass annual average concentration was (1.11 µg m−3), divided into seasonal stations, the cold season was the highest with (1.44 µg m−3), followed by the dry season (1.23 µg m−3), rainy season (0.94 µg m−3) and finally warm dry season (0.83 µg m−3). In the south, BC annual average concentration was (1.96 µg m−3); divided into seasons, the highest was the dry season with (2.73 µg m−3), followed by the cold season (2.37 µg m−3), dry warm season (1.61 µg m−3) and the rainy season (1.28 µg m−3). One of the main findings was the dominance of annual mean concentrations of BC originating from fossil fuels (BCff) on the north site in the city was 0.97 and on the south site (BCff) was 0.91 due to some forest fires during the monitoring period. This study presented information from two zones of a growing city in Mexico to generate new air pollutant indicators to have a better understanding of pollutant interactions in the city, to decrease the emission precursor sources, and reduce the health risks in the population. Background/Objectives: Leishmaniasis is one of the 20 Neglected Tropical Diseases according to the WHO, affecting approximately 12 million people in four continents, generating serious public health problems. The lack of therapeutic options, associated with toxicity and the emergence of resistance to the few available drugs, makes it urgent to develop new drug options. In this context, the aims of this work are to expand the knowledge about the pharmacophore group responsible for the antileishmanial potential of 2-aminothiophene derivatives. Thus, new compounds were synthesized containing chemical modifications at the C-3, C-4, and C-5 positions of the 2-aminothiophene ring, in addition to the S-Se bioisosterism. Methods: Dozens of 2-AT and 2-aminoselenophen (2-AS) derivatives were sequentially synthesized through applications of the Gewald reaction and were then evaluated in vitro for their activities against L. amazonensis and for cytotoxicity against macrophages. Results: Several series of compounds were synthesized, and it was possible to identify some substitution patterns favorable to the activity generating compounds with IC50 values below 10 µM, such as the non-essentiality of the presence of a carbonitrile group at C-3; the importance of the presence and size of cycloalkyl/piperidinyl chains at C-4 and C-5 in modulating the activity; and the increase in activity without affecting the safety of the S/Se bioisosteric substitution. Conclusions: Taken together, these findings reaffirm the great potential of 2-aminothiophenes to generate antileishmanial drug candidates and offers contributions to the drug design of compounds with an even more promising profile for the problem of leishmaniasis. This study aimed to evaluate the retrievability and potential damage to implant–abutment connections caused by fractured abutment screw removal using conventional and drilling techniques. A total of forty abutment screws were randomly inserted into forty dental implants, and then they were fractured and extracted using different removal methods: Group A employed a conventional approach utilizing an exploration probe and an ultrasonic device without irrigation (n = 10) (conventional); Group B used the Phibo drilling removal system without irrigation (n = 10) (Phibo); Group C utilized the Rhein83® drilling removal system without irrigation (n = 10) (Rhein83); and Group D implemented the Sanhigia® drilling removal system without irrigation (n = 10) (Sanhigia). Pre- and postoperative micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scans were performed on the dental implants, and Standard Tessellation Language (STL) digital files were generated for morphometric analysis to measure the wear volume. ANOVA was used to assess the volumetric differences (mm3) and percentage ratios of the internal thread volumes of the implant–abutment connections before and after the procedures. Results: This study found no statistically significant differences in the volumetric and percentage ratios of internal threads among the implant groups (Phibo, Rhein83, Sanhigia, and conventional). However, the success rate for retrieving fractured abutment screws was higher (90%) with the drilling systems compared to the conventional technique (50%). These results suggest that drilling systems are more effective for the retrieval of damaged screws. Although drilling techniques without irrigation demonstrated higher removal efficiency compared to the conventional method, both approaches resulted in similar wear volumes at the implant–abutment connections when used to extract fractured screws. Simple Summary: Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) have a high prevalence of malnutrition, which is associated with a decrease in overall survival. In this study, we carried out a morphofunctional assessment (bioelectrical impedance, muscle ultrasound, hand grip strength, the up-and-go test, and biochemical analysis) in a population with HNC. We detected a correlation between malnutrition and morphofunctional measurement. Multiple bioelectrical and ultrasound parameters were associated with an increased risk of malnutrition and its severity. We found, for the first time in this population, different cut-off points to define malnutrition based on Glim Criteria and its severity, showing a greater probability of mortality when comparing severe malnutrition group versus well and moderate malnutrition, respectively. Therefore, with simple techniques such as BIA and ultrasound, an individualized diagnosis of malnutrition can be reached, so they should be incorporated into the daily clinical practice to identify higher-risk patients in whom to intensify nutritional treatment. Background: Malnutrition is highly prevalent in patients with head and neck cancer, with relevant consequences in the treatment results. Methods: Multicenter observational study including 514 patients diagnosed with HNC. The morphofunctional assessment was carried out during the first 2 weeks of radiotherapy treatment. A correlation analysis between nutritional variables and groups of malnutrition, a multivariate logistic regression analysis, and a random forest analysis to select the most relevant variables to predict malnutrition were performed. Results: In total, 51.6% were undernourished (26.3% moderately and 25.3% severely). There was a negative correlation between morphofunctional variables and a positive correlation between hsCRP and well vs. moderate and well vs. severe malnutrition groups. The increase in different bioelectrical and ultrasound parameters was associated with a lower risk of moderate and severe malnutrition when groups with different degrees of malnutrition were compared. To predict the importance of morphofunctional variables on the risk of undernutrition, a nomogram, a random forest, and decision tree models were conducted. For the well vs. moderate, for the well vs. severe, and for the moderate vs. severe malnutrition groups, FFMI (cut-off < 20 kg/m2), BCMI (cut-off < 7.6 kg/m2), and RF-Y-axis (cut-off < 0.94 cm), respectively, were the most crucial variables, showing a greater probability of mortality in the two last comparisons. Conclusions: Malnutrition is very prevalent in HNC patients. Morphofunctional assessment with simple tools such as electrical impedance and muscle ultrasound allows an early nutritional diagnosis with an impact on survival. Water scarcity is a significant global risk affecting health, food security, economic development, social stability, environmental sustainability, and climate change adaptation. Implementing deficit irrigation strategies can improve water efficiency and agricultural resilience. Spain, particularly the Region of Murcia, has pioneered apricot cultivation, with the 'Mirlo Rojo' variety known for its high productivity, Sharka virus resistance, and exceptional organoleptic qualities. This study evaluates the effects of regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) on the quality, antioxidant activity, fatty acid profile, and volatile compounds of 'Mirlo Rojo' apricots. Four irrigation treatments (100% ETc, 60% ETc, 33% ETc, and 0% ETc) were tested during the final growth stages in May 2023. Results showed no adverse effects on the evaluated parameters. RDI treatments increased total soluble solids, glucose, and fructose content, improving maturity and sweetness indices. The reliance on soil acidity correctives and mineral fertilizers poses a threat to food production due to the finite nature of these resources and their susceptibility to price volatility from importation. Soil remineralizers have emerged as a sustainable alternative. This study assessed silicate agrominerals as soil remineralizers to replace limestone, gypsum, and conventional fertilizers in a no-tillage system. Conducted in a tropical climate on sandy/medium-textured Ultisol, twelve treatments (combinations of liming, gypsum, mineral fertilization, and remineralizer) were tested for their effects on soybean and sorghum agronomic traits. Applying a remineralizer at 2500 kg ha−1 enhanced soybean productivity by 15% and sorghum by 35% in succession, along with increases in P, S, Ca, Mg, sum of bases (SB), cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation (V%) in the 0–0.20 m layer and organic matter in the 0–0.40 m layer, benefiting soil microbiological parameters, with the treatment combining all four products improving soil fertility; however, for better crop productivity, split applications appear to be an alternative to avoid nutrient imbalance. Due to the finer particle size of the remineralizer, which allows faster nutrient release, further research is recommended to investigate the long-term impacts on soil microbiota dynamics, optimal doses and combinations, and economic viability across various soil types and climates. The shear strength and resistance of granular materials are critical indicators in geotechnical engineering and infrastructure construction. Both sliding and rotation influence the energy evolution of soil granular motion during shear. To examine the effects of particle rotation on shear damage and energy evolution in granular systems, we first describe the transformation of irregularly shaped particles into regular shapes via geometrical parameters, ensuring the invariance of energy density and density. We then analyze the impact of particle rotation on shear-stress variation and energy dissipation through a shear energy evolution equation. Additionally, we establish the relationship between the shear-stress ratio and normal stress, considering particle rotation. Finally, we verify the influence of particle rotation on energy evolution and shear damage through shear tests on irregular calcareous sand and regular silica-bead particles. The results indicate that granular materials do not fully comply with the Coulomb strength criterion. In the initial shear stage, most of the external work is converted into granular rotational-shear energy, whereas in the later stage, it primarily shifts to granular sliding-shear energy. Notably, the sensitivity of the granular rotational energy to a vertical load is significantly greater than that of the granular sliding energy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cocoa fermentation plays a key role in defining chocolate's flavor, with yeasts being central to this process. This study aimed to explore intraspecific genetic diversity of major indigenous yeasts (i.e., Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia kudriavzevii), and their potential interaction in the cocoa pulp environment. Their metabolic intraspecific diversity was characterized in synthetic cocoa pulp medium. Then, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia kudriavzevii, and other strains were introduced to each other to evaluate their potential negative interaction. Interesting strain associations were selected to further explore their interaction in synthetic cocoa pulp medium as well as real fresh cocoa pulp. From a fermentation campaign in Ivory Coast, a set of Saccharomyces (S.) cerevisiae and Pichia (P.) kudriavzevii strains were isolated from batches classified according to their chocolate quality (i.e., standard, intermediate, or premium chocolate). Less abundant species (i.e., Torulaspora franciscae, Kluyveromyces marxianus) were also isolated and tested for their potential negative interactions with S. cerevisiae and P. kudriavzevii. A set of strains were selected and cultured in single and in co-culture in a minimal cocoa pulp synthetic medium and in fresh cocoa pulp to highlight potential positive and/or negative interactions regarding fermentative aroma profile (i.e., higher alcohols, acetate esters, medium-chain fatty acids, and ethyl esters). The results highlighted the dominance of S. cerevisiae in fermentation kinetics and medium- to long-chain ester production, contrasted with P. kudriavzevii's efficiency in short-chain ester synthesis. Intraspecific aroma profile variations can be pointed out. The co-cultures of P. kudriavzevii and S. cerevisiae strains isolated from the premium chocolate batch had a positive impact on the fermented pulp aroma profile. Negative interactions were observed with Torulaspora franciscae, which eliminated P. kudriavzevii's aroma expression. Finally, the comparison of the data obtained for the minimal cocoa pulp synthetic medium compared to the cocoa pulp allowed us to draw conclusions about the use of synthetic media for studying cocoa fermentation. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the primary stability, according to the insertion torque value (ITV) and resonance frequency analysis (RFA), of dental implants placed in standardized blocks of bone quality equivalent to type II-A bone, using three surgical undersized protocols of 0.2 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.8 mm, considering different dental implant diameters and lengths. Methods: One hundred and twenty dental implants (DIs) of different diameters (3.5, 3.8, 4.5, and 5.0 mm) and lengths (8.5, 10.0, 11.5, 13.0, and 15.0 mm) placed in polyurethane blocks equivalent to type II-A bone, according to the Lekholm and Zarb classification modified by Rosas et al., were examined with three surgical protocols of under-milling of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 mm. The ITV and the RFA were the determinants of primary stability, and their respective values were recorded as Ncm and the implant stability quotient (ISQ) immediately after the placement of the DIs. These were evaluated according to each surgical insertion protocol, length, and diameter of the DI under a multivariate analysis model (MANOVA). Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: It was observed that the average of the ITV was significantly higher when a 0.8 mm under-milling protocol was used (63.2 ± 14.9 Ncm) (p < 0.001). However, the ITV was significantly lower when a 0.2 mm under-milling protocol was used (25.1 ± 8.3 Ncm) (p < 0.001). On the other hand, the ISQ did not present significant differences (p = 0.166) when comparing the 0.2 (67.6 ISQ ± 5.4 ISQ), 0.5 (65.8 ISQ ± 3.4 ISQ), and 0.8 (65.7 ISQ ± 4.0 ISQ) under-milling protocols in the evaluation of the primary stability of the dental implant. The multivariate effect size (ηp2 = 0.639) indicated that the variability detected in the insertion torque and the ISQ, at the same time, was explained by 63.9% (p < 0.001) due only to the compression protocol, while the implant diameter explained this variability by 27.0% (ηp2 = 0.270) (p < 0.001) and the implant length only significantly explained this variability by 12.1% (ηp2 = 0.121) (p = 0.030). Finally, any interaction between the compression protocol, implant diameter, and length did not influence insertion torque variability or the ISQ (p > 0.05). Conclusions: It can be concluded that when the surgical protocol for subpreparation is optimal according to the prepared bone bed, regardless of the diameter or length of the dental implant used, primary stability was assured according to the ITV and the RFA in 63.9%. This finding allows us to recommend carrying out a correct analysis of bone quality in order to subsequently select the most appropriate surgical protocol for the subpreparation of the bone bed to achieve better primary stability of the dental implant. Background: Annona muricata L. (guanabana) leaves are rich in bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant properties. In the state of Colima, both ethanolic extracts and infusions are traditionally used in folk medicine to address various ailments. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the phytochemical composition and antioxidant activities of ethanolic extracts and infusions of A. muricata leaves from three geographic regions in Colima, Mexico, with a focus on how geographic origin affects their bioactive properties. Methods: Ethanolic extracts and infusions were prepared from A. muricata leaves and analyzed using phytochemical screening; DPPH, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and total phenolic content (TPC) measurements; and HPLC. TLC was also conducted to examine the presence of specific compounds, such as flavonoids and phenols. Results: Both the ethanolic extracts and infusions contained significant levels of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and phenolic compounds. The infusions demonstrated superior antioxidant capacity, with DPPH inhibition values of 72.5%, 68.3%, and 65.1% in the northern, central, and southern regions, respectively, compared to the ethanolic extracts' values of 50.3%, 48.9%, and 45.0%. HPLC identified quercetin as a major compound across all samples. Geographically, the northern region exhibited higher concentrations of bioactive compounds, particularly total flavonoid content (TFC) and iron-reducing power (FRPA). Conclusions: Both the ethanolic extracts and infusions of A. muricata leaves exhibited significant antioxidant properties, with the infusions showing superior performance. The results suggest that A. muricata infusions may have potential applications in managing oxidative stress-related diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Exploring their use in traditional medicine and employing this type of approach can help discern the metabolite profile responsible for these bioactivities. Geographic factors influence the bioactive profile of the plant, and further research is needed to isolate specific bioactive compounds and elucidate their therapeutic mechanisms. The purpose of this study is to measure the positional accuracy of transfers during the splinting printing process using four biomaterials (two acrylic resins and two bis acrylic resins). Materials and Methods: A master model was constructed for the acrylic simulation of edentulous mandibles with four multiunit analogs (Bioinnovation, Sao Paulo, Brazil) positioned between the lateral incisor and premolar areas. Eighty samples (n = 80) were created in total. Four different dental materials, Duralay (Reliance, Chicago, IL, USA); Pattern Resin LS (GC, Tokyo, Japan) with a ratio of one part liquid and two parts powder; Structur (Vocco, Colonia, Germany); and Protemp (3 M ESPE, Neus, Germany), were used as splints with five samples each. Measurements were obtained for distances between points A, B, C, and D in sequential order through an INSIZE digital calibrator (Inzise, Taiwan, Seng, China). Results: The results were as follows: Distance A: better performance was observed for Pattern Resin (mean = 38.59 mm) and Duralay (mean = 38.58 mm) compared to the base (mean = 38.59 mm); distance B: Pattern Resin (mean = 19.08 mm) and Duralay (mean = 19.07 mm) were compared to the base (mean = 19.08 mm); distance C: no significant differences in relation to the base (prom = 18.85 mm) were shown for the three materials of Pattern Resin (prom = 18.86 mm), Structur (prom = 18.85 mm), and Duralay (mean = 18.85 mm); and distance D: Pattern Resin (mean = 20.46 mm) and Duralay (mean = 20.46 mm) provided lower performance compared to the base (mean = 20.47 mm), ANOVA (Prob = 0.333 > 0.05). After the Council of Trent (1545–1563), the Catholic Church undertook a profound renovation, which affected the spatial configuration of the churches to adjust to the spirit of the Counter-Reformation. The acoustic cultural heritage in these spaces have been studied by different researchers, proposing the joint analysis of 66 Catholic churches from the Baroque period. This study delves into the global characterisation of the sample and establishes correlations between geometric and acoustic parameters. From the acoustic analysis, it is clear that the central floor typology, as opposed to Latin cross churches, presents better average values of musical clarity in relation to their volume. The analysis of the relationship between acoustic and geometric parameters, when the sample of churches is discriminated by typology, allows for the establishment of appropriate correlations for Latin cross floor plans, single naves and basilicas, but not when the analysis is carried out for the entire sample. These correlations are a tool that allows us to evaluate acoustic parameters not measured in situ in Catholic churches of the Baroque period in a predictive way as a function of other measured acoustic or geometric parameters. Simple Summary: Exosomes are small vesicles released by our cells to communicate. Tumor cells also release exosomes that can go to the liver when they have the integrin αVβ5, an adhesion receptor, on their surface. These exosomes reach the liver first, where their content establishes a pre-metastatic niche that increases the chances of the upcoming metastatic cells surviving and forming a liver metastasis, a frequent complication in pancreatic and colorectal cancer. To prevent this pre-metastatic niche in the liver, we were inspired by cancer cells and modified some non-cancerous cells to produce more integrin αVβ5. Consequently, this integrin was transferred to its exosomes, and the exosomes we collected accumulated more efficiently and specifically in the liver of mice. Since the protein TGF-β initiates the pre-metastatic niche, we further modified our cells to produce the mRNA of a TGF-β inhibitor. Cells that internalized the exosomes containing these mRNA produced the TGF-β inhibitor and inhibited TGF-β signaling. These functionalized exosomes could then be a nanocarrier to bring TGF-β inhibitors specifically to the liver to limit their side effects and prevent the pre-metastatic niche. Liver metastases frequently occur in pancreatic and colorectal cancer. Their development is promoted by tumor-derived exosomes with the integrin αVβ5 on their membrane. This integrin directs exosomes to the liver, where they promote a TGF-β-dependent pre-metastatic niche. We proposed the development of αVβ5+ exosomes to deliver anti-TGF-β therapy to the liver. This study demonstrates that the overexpression of αVβ5 in 293T cells allows its transfer to the secreted exosomes. αVβ5 overexpression increases exosome delivery to the liver, and αVβ5+ exosomes accumulate more in the liver compared to the lungs, kidneys, and brain in mice. We then sought 293T cells to directly produce and load an anti-TGF-β agent in their exosomes. First, we transduced 293T cells to express shRNAs against Tgfb1; however, the exosomes isolated from these cells did not knock down Tgfb1 in treated macrophages in vitro. However, when 293T expressed an mRNA coding a soluble form of betaglycan (sBG), a TGF-β inhibitor, this mRNA was detected in the isolated exosomes and the protein in the conditioned media of macrophages treated in vitro. In turn, this conditioned media decreased the TGF-β-induced phosphorylation of SMAD2/3 in hepatic cells in vitro. This study evaluated the gut microbiota and meat quality traits in 11 healthy female cattle from the Huaral region of Peru, including 5 Angus, 3 Braunvieh, and 3 F1 Simmental × Braunvieh. All cattle were 18 months old and maintained on a consistent lifelong diet. Meat quality traits, including loin area, fat thickness, muscle depth, and marbling, were assessed in vivo using ultrasonography. Fecal samples were collected for microbiota analysis, and DNA was extracted for 16S and 18S rRNA sequencing to characterize bacterial, fungal, and protist communities. Significant correlations were observed between microbial genera and meat traits: Christensenellaceae R-7 and Alistipes were positively associated with marbling and muscle area, while Rikenellaceae RC9 showed a negative correlation with fat thickness. Among fungi, Candida positively correlated with marbling, while Trichosporon was negatively associated with muscle depth. For protists, Entodinium negatively correlated with fat thickness and marbling. Background/Objectives: In a previous study, we described elevated anti-Anisakis IgG levels in septic patients in relation to disease severity. In this study, our objective was to analyze the evolution of anti-Anisakis immunoglobulins in septic patients during hospital admission and their association with αβ and γδ T cell subsets. Methods: We recruited 80 subjects: 40 patients with sepsis and 40 controls. αβ and γδ T cells were analyzed using flow cytometry. Apoptosis was also assessed, and anti-Anisakis antibodies were measured by ELISA in the sera of patients with sepsis and controls. Results: In the second analysis (7–10 after sepsis evolution), an increase in all specific antibody isotypes was identified in individuals with septic shock, except IgE. The levels of anti-Anisakis IgG and IgA were higher in the subjects with sepsis in the first analysis and continued to increase in the second analysis compared with the healthy control subjects. There was an increase in anti-Anisakis IgG and IgA levels in surviving patients and an increase in IgA levels in non-surviving patients. A rise in specific IgG and IgE levels was noted in the second analysis of patients with sepsis with αβ CD3+ T cell deficiency. Patients without γδ T cell deficiency had increased anti-Anisakis IgA levels 7–10 days after admission. Conclusions: Our results suggest a previous infection by Anisakis that could be involved in the subsequent septic process and be related to patients who have negative cultures in which the pathogen causing sepsis has not been identified. Aguama (Bromelia pinguin L.), a plant belonging to the Bromeliaceae family, possesses a rich content of organic compounds historically employed in traditional medicine. This research focuses on the sustainable synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles via an eco-friendly route using 1, 2, and 4% of Aguama peel extract. This method contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing the use of hazardous chemicals in nanoparticle production. The optical properties, including the band gap, were determined using the TAUC model through Ultraviolet–Visible Spectroscopy (UV–Vis). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using three widely studied organic dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange, and rhodamine B) under both solar and UV radiation. The results demonstrated that the ZnO nanoparticles, characterized by a wurtzite-type crystalline structure and particle sizes ranging from 68 to 76 nm, exhibited high thermal stability and band gap values between 2.60 and 2.91 eV. These nanoparticles successfully degraded the dyes completely, with methylene blue degrading in 40 min, methyl orange in 70 min, and rhodamine B in 90 min. This study underscores the potential of Bromelia pinguin L. extract in advancing sustainable nanoparticle synthesis and its application in environmental remediation through efficient photocatalysis. The most common bee species used for honey production is Apis mellifera (A. mellifera), followed by stingless bees. This study included scientific articles using the PRISMA approach. A random effect model was implemented and the effect size (ES) was calculated and reported as the standardized mean difference (SMD) and raw mean difference (RMD). The mean phenolic content in A. mellifera honey was 61.21 ± 28.3 mg GAE/100 g and stingless bee honey +33.69 mg GAE/100 g; p = 0.01. The antioxidant activity, discovered by the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) method, showed a mean of 97.34 ± 7.84 μmol Fe(II)/100 g in A. mellifera and stingless bee honey +63.39 μmol Fe(II)/100 g; p = 0.009. The physicochemical properties showed significant differences in moisture (A. mellifera honey 19.54 ± 3.65%; stingless bee honey +8.02%; p = 0.0001), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (A. mellifera honey 20.14 ± 16.27 mg/kg; stingless bee honey −11.25 mg/kg; p = 0.001), and free acidity (A. mellifera honey 31.32 ± 16.67 meq/kg; stingless bee honey +34.76 meq/kg; p = 0.01). The pursuit of nutraceuticals to improve the quality of life for patients with neurodegenerative conditions is a dynamic field within neuropharmacology. Unfortunately, many nutraceuticals that show promise in preclinical studies fail to demonstrate significant clinical benefits in human trials, leading to their exclusion as therapeutic options. This discrepancy may stem from the categorical interpretation of preclinical and clinical results. Basic researchers often assume that non-human experimental animals exhibit less phenotypic variability than humans. This belief overlooks interindividual phenotype variation, thereby leading to categorical conclusions being drawn from experiments. Consequently, when human clinical trials are conducted, the researchers expect similarly conclusive results. If these results are not achieved, the nutraceutical is deemed ineffective for clinical use, even if numerous individuals might benefit. In our study, we evaluated whether analyzing phenotype variability and similarity through non-categorical methods could help identify rotenone (ROT)-treated rats that might benefit from consuming nano-emulsified punicic acid (Nano-PSO), even if the prevention of "parkinsonism" or the restoration of neurometabolic function is inconsistent across individuals. Our findings supported this hypothesis. The benefits of Nano-PSO were not categorical; however, analyzing phenotype variance allowed us to identify ROT rats with varying degrees of benefit from Nano-PSO consumption. Water property parameters were analyzed over 9 months across six stations within the Estero Salado. The parameters under evaluation included nitrite (NO2−), nitrate (NO3−), phosphate (PO43−), ammonium (NH4+), temperature, pH, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), conductivity, salinity, color, turbidity, suspended solids, hardness, and alkalinity. Additionally, the TRIX index (which measures chlorophyll, oxygen saturation, nitrogen, and phosphorus) was considered. Yield and stability are desirable characteristics that crops need to have high agronomic value; sugarcane stands out globally due to its diverse range of products and by-products. However, genotype-environment (G × E) interactions can affect the overall performance of a crop. The objective of this study is to identify genotypes with the highest yield and stability, as well as to understand their independent and interactive effects. A collection of 10 sugarcane varieties was evaluated, including Colombian, Dominican, Ecuadorian lines, and a group of clones planted across five different locations from 2018 to 2020. A two-way ANOVA along with the GGE biplot technique were used to analyze yield and stability. The ANOVA model shows highly significant effects in all cases (p < 0.001) except for the genotype by year and sector interaction (G × Y × S); however, the decomposition by sectors reveals a significant triple interaction in sector 04 (p < 0.05). The GGE biplot model accounted for up to 74.77% of the total variance explained in its PC1 and PC2 components. It also highlighted the group of clones as having the highest yield and environmental instability, and the Ecuadorian varieties EC-07 and EC-08 as having the best yield-stability relationship. We conclude that the combined results of the ANOVA and GGE biplot models provide a more synergistic and effective evaluation of sugarcane varieties, offering theoretical and practical bases for decision-making in the selection of specific varieties. The primary objective of this research is to analyze and compare the effects of physical activity on patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, leading to disrupted sleep and various health complications. Methods: A systematic and strategic search of 16 peer-reviewed articles was conducted to assess the impact of different types of physical exercise on the apnea–hypopnea index (AHI), a key metric used to quantify the severity of OSA. The selected studies focused on two main exercise modalities: aerobic exercise alone and a combination of aerobic and resistance training. These modalities were examined to determine their respective influences on the AHI among individuals with OSA. Results: The findings revealed that aerobic exercise alone did not significantly alter the apnea–hypopnea index (p = 0.15), suggesting limited effectiveness in reducing the severity of OSA when performed in isolation. However, in patients who engaged in combined physical activity—incorporating both aerobic and resistance exercises—a significant reduction in the AHI was observed (p < 0.01), indicating a more substantial therapeutic effect. Conclusions: This study concludes that a structured exercise program combining aerobic and resistance training produces a significant improvement in the apnea–hypopnea indices of patients with obstructive sleep apnea. These results highlight the potential of combined exercise regimens as a non-pharmacological intervention that could complement traditional OSA treatments, offering a viable approach to managing the condition and improving patient outcomes. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a leading cause of healthcare-associated infections, which are related to substantial morbidity and mortality. The incidence of Plasmid-Mediated Quinolone Resistance (PMQR) determinants has been previously reported in this bacterium. However, there is limited information regarding the presence of PMQR and carbapenemase-encoding genes simultaneously. This study aims to analyze the prevalence of these determinants on P. aeruginosa strain isolated from clinical patients in the State of Aguascalientes, Mexico. Fifty-two P. aeruginosa isolates from nosocomial patients were collected from Centenario Hospital Miguel Hidalgo. This is a retrospective observational study conducted at a single center. Antibiotic susceptibility was tested using the Vitek-2 system. Only carbapenem-resistant isolates were included in this study. Carbapenemase-encoding genes and PMQR determinants were screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Resistance rates of 100% were found on tigecycline and ceftriaxone. Of the 52 isolates, 34.6% were positive for the qnr genes, 46.2% for the oqxA gene, and 25% for the aac-(6′)-lb gene. The most frequent carbapenemase genes found in the samples were blaOXA-51 (42.3%), blaOXA-1 (15.4%), and blaVIM (15.4%). blaOXA-51 co-carrying oqxA was detected in 21.1% of the isolates, blaOXA-51 co-carrying aac-(6')-lb in 11.5%, blaVIM co-carrying aac-(6′)-lb in 3.8%, and blaKPC co-carrying oqxA in 5.8%. Systematic surveillance to detect carbapenemase-encoding genes and PMQR determinants, and rational prescription using the last-line drugs could help in preventing the dissemination of multidrug-resistant determinants. Breast cancer survivorship is a recognized risk factor for sexual dysfunction, with various clinical, sociocultural, and psychological factors potentially interacting differently across populations. This study compared sexual dysfunction, anxiety, and depression between females with breast cancer and those without, aiming to identify associated factors. A total of 362 females participated, including 227 with sexual dysfunction and 135 controls. Among them, 195 are breast cancer survivors, while 167 have no personal history of cancer. Key variables were analyzed using Student's t-test for quantitative data and Fisher's exact test for categorical data, while logistic regression models were used to assess the association between sexual dysfunction and various factors. Multivariate analysis revealed that, in sexually active females, breast cancer survivorship increased the odds of sexual dysfunction 2.7-fold (95% CI: 1.17–6.49; p = 0.020). Anxiety was significantly associated with sexual dysfunction, regardless of cancer status (AdOR 6.00; 95% CI: 2.50–14.43; p < 0.001). The interaction between cancer survival and anxiety further increased the odds of sexual dysfunction by more than 11-fold (AdOR 11.55; 95% CI: 3.81–35.04; p < 0.001). Additionally, obesity was found to be a protective factor among cancer survivors (AdOR 0.149; 95% CI: 0.027–0.819; p = 0.029). Due to their nature, using shear thickening fluids (STFs) in engineering applications has sparked an interest in developing energy-dissipating systems, such as damping devices or shock absorbers. The Rheinforce technology allows the design of customized energy dissipative composites by embedding microfluidic channels filled with STFs in a scaffold material. One of the reasons for using microfluidic channels is that their shape can be numerically optimized to control pressure drop (also known as rectifiers); thus, by controlling the pressure drop, it is possible to control the energy dissipated by the viscous effect. Upon impact, the fluid is forced to flow through the microchannel, experiencing the typical entry flow until it reaches the fully developed flow. It is well-known for Newtonian fluid that the entrance flow is responsible for a non-negligible percentage of the total pressure drop in the fluid; therefore, an analysis of the fluid flow at the entry region for STFs is of paramount importance for an accurate design of the Rheinforce composites. This analysis has been numerically performed before for shear-thickening fluids modeled by a power-law model; however, as this constitutive model represents a continuously growing viscosity between end-viscosity plateau values, it is not representative of the characteristic viscosity curve of shear-thickening fluids, which typically exhibit a three-region shape (thinning-thickening-thinning). Phasins are proteins located on the surface of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (P3HB) granules that affect the metabolism of the polymer, the size and number of the granules, and some also have stress-protecting and growth-promoting effects. This study evaluated the effect of inactivating two new phasins (PhbP2 or PhbP3) on the cellular growth, production, and molecular mass of P3HB in cultures under low or high oxygen transfer rates (OTR). The results revealed that under high OTRₘₐₓ conditions (between 8.1 and 8.9 mmol L−1 h−1), the absence of phasins PhbP2 and PhbP3 resulted in a strong negative effect on the growth rate; in contrast, the rates of specific oxygen consumption increased in both cases. This behavior was not observed under a low oxygen transfer rate (3.9 ± 0.71 mol L−1 h−1), where cellular growth and oxygen consumption were the same for the different strains evaluated. It was observed that at high OTR, the absence of PhbP3 affected the production of P3HB, decreasing it by 30% at the end of cultivation. In contrast, the molecular weight remained constant over time. Background: The presence of the rs35705950 variant in the MUC5B gene promoter is a critical genetic risk factor in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). It has been associated with usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) in several interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). In antisynthetase syndrome (ASSD), most high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) patterns are inflammatory, but up to 13% have UIP, leading to a worse prognosis. Methods: This single-center study included 60 patients with ASSD-ILD. We investigated whether carrying the MUC5B rs35705950 promoter variant was associated with UIP. To estimate the strength of the association between the genotype of the MUC5B rs35705950 promoter variant and the fibrotic pattern we used the odds ratio (cOR), and to assess the effect of confounding variables (age, evolution time, and sex), we performed a logistic regression to obtained the adjusted odds ratio (aOR). Results: The GT genotype of the MUC5B rs35705950 promoter variant is associated with up to a 4-fold increased risk of UIP (cOR 5.0, 95% CI 1.13–22.10), and the effect was even maintained after adjusting for potentially confounding variables such as sex, age, and time to progression (aOR 5.2, 95% CI 1.04–25.89). Conclusions: our study supports the role of MUC5B rs35705950 in ASSD-ILD with UIP. The present study aimed to identify in patients with severe COVID-19 and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) the association between rs3804099 and rs3804100 (TLR2) and evaluate the expression of TLR-2 on the cell surface of innate and adaptive cells of patients' carriers of C allele in at least one genetic variant. We genotyped 1018 patients with COVID-19 and ARDS. According to genotype, a subgroup of 12 patients was selected to stimulate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with spike and LPS + spike. We evaluated soluble molecules in cell culture supernatants. The C allele in TLR2 (rs3804099, rs3804100) is not associated with a risk of severe COVID-19; however, the presence of the C allele (rs3804099 or rs3804100) affects the TLR-2 ability to respond to a spike of SARS-CoV-2 correctly. The reference group (genotype TT) downregulated the frequency of non-switched TLR-2+ B cells in response to spike stimulus; however, the allele's C carriers group is unable to induce this regulation, but they produce high levels of IL-10, IL-6, and TNF-α by an independent pathway of TLR-2. The modernization of pig production has led to increasingly larger populations of pigs. This dynamic allows for accelerated production and ensures a steady pork supply but also facilitates the spread of infections. PCV2 is a ubiquitous virus and can cause PCV2-associated diseases, depending on production practices. This study aimed to evaluate the conditions of pig production in the state of Jalisco, Mexico, and correlate them with PCV2. A total of 4207 serum samples from 80 farms were analyzed. Epidemiological data were collected and used to investigate factors associated with PCV2 detection. A relative frequency of approximately 30% was detected, primarily in grower pigs maintained on multisite farms. The antimicrobial properties of a series of anionic bis(carbene) silver complexes Na3[Ag(NHCR)2] were investigated (2a–2g and 2c′, where NHCR is a 2,2′-(imidazol-2-ylidene)dicarboxylate-type N-heterocyclic carbene). The complexes were synthesized by the interaction of imidazolium dicarboxylate compounds with silver oxide in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide. Complexes 2f,g were characterized analytically and spectroscopically, and the ligand precursor 1f and complexes 2c and 2g were structurally identified by X-ray diffraction methods. The anions of 2c and 2g, [Ag(NHCR)2]3−, showed a typical linear disposition of Ccarbene-Ag-Ccarbene atoms and an uncommonly eclipsed conformation of carbene ligands. The antimicrobial properties of complexes 2a–g, which contains chiral (2b–2e and 2c′) and non-chiral derivatives (2a,f,g), were evaluated against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and a Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus. From the observed values of the minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration, complexes 2a and 2b showed the best antimicrobial activity against all strains. An interesting chirality–antimicrobial relationship was found, and eutomer 2c′ showed better activity than its enantiomer 2c against the three bacteria. Furthermore, these complexes were investigated experimentally and theoretically by 109Ag nuclear magnetic resonance, and the electronic and steric characteristics of the dianionic carbene ligands were also examined. A conceptual design of coffee stem biomass gasification was developed using the Aspen Plus process simulator, which was analyzed based on energy criteria such as the lower heating value of the produced synthesis gas and cold gas efficiency. The results yielded a lower heating value of 5.07 kJ/MJ, with a cold gas efficiency of 77.45% and a yield of 2.75 kg gas/kg biomass, all operating under optimal conditions with studied parameters including an air-to-biomass ratio between 1.8 and 2.5, gasifying agent temperature of 260 °C, and biomass moisture content below 10%. A sensitivity analysis was conducted on the formation of the most important compounds for synthesis gas quality (H2, CO, CO2, H2O, CH4). This involved understanding the reactions occurring throughout the gasification reactor and evaluating process parameters such as feed moisture content, gasification section temperature, and the ratio between feed and gasifying agent flows to optimize the process with the aim of improving product quality and reducing residue formation. The simulation scheme was validated against experimental data, yielding results consistent with reality. This contributed valuable information towards process optimization for projects targeting the Colombian coffee sector, paving the way for future gasifier designs tailored to the quantity of raw material to be processed. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 5% of people around the world have hearing disabilities, which limits their capacity to communicate with others. Recently, scientists have proposed systems based on deep learning techniques to create a sign language-to-text translator, expecting this to help deaf people communicate; however, the performance of such systems is still low for practical scenarios. Furthermore, the proposed systems are language-oriented, which leads to particular problems related to the signs for each language. For this reason, to address this problem, in this paper, we propose a system based on a Recursive Neural Network (RNN) focused on Mexican Sign Language (MSL) that uses the spatial tracking of hands and facial expressions to predict the word that a person intends to communicate. To achieve this, we trained four RNN-based models using a dataset of 600 clips that were 30 s long; each word included 30 clips. We conducted two experiments; we tailored the first experiment to determine the most well-suited model for the target application and measure the accuracy of the resulting system in offline mode; in the second experiment, we measured the accuracy of the system in online mode. We assessed the system's performance using the following metrics: the precision, recall, F1-score, and the number of errors during online scenarios, and the results computed indicate an accuracy of 0.93 in the offline mode and a higher performance for the online operating mode compared to previously proposed approaches. These results underscore the potential of the proposed scheme in scenarios such as teaching, learning, commercial transactions, and daily communications among deaf and non-deaf people. The methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene 677C➔T polymorphism is capable of altering folate metabolism and can modify certain neoplasia risk. Reports have suggested that folate can have an influence on bone development and so it is of interest to know if the MTHFR 677C➔T polymorphism is associated with the malignant transformation process of this tissue. The polymorphism was determined in 55 patients with osteosarcoma and in 180 healthy individuals. Compared with C/T+C/C genotypes, a 3.7-fold reduction in osteosarcoma probability is possible with the T/T genotype (OR 0.27, CI 95% 0.07–0.82). Volumetric ceramic receivers can be regarded as a promising technology to heat air above 1000 °C for solar thermal electricity production. In this study, the thermal shock behavior of commercial 10 ppi (A) and 20 ppi (B) oxide-bonded silicon carbide (ob-SiC) reticulated porous ceramic (RPC) foams was evaluated using the SF60 solar furnace at Plataforma Solar de Almería. The foams were subjected to well-controlled temperature cycles ranging from 800 to 1000, 1200, 1300 or 1400 °C, for 25, 100, and 150 cycles. The extent of the damage after thermal shock was determined by crushing tests. The damage was found to be critically dependent on both the bulk density and cell size. Decreasing both the bulk density and cell size resulted in better thermal shock resistance. The B foam exhibited approximately half the stress degradation compared to the A foam when exposed to a temperature difference of 600 K (in the range of 800 to 1400 °C) and subjected to 150 cycles. Glassy carbon (GC) microelectrodes have been successfully used for the detection of electroactive neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin through voltammetry. However, non-electroactive neurotransmitters such as glutamate, lactate, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are inherently unsuitable for detection through voltammetry techniques without functionalizing the surface of the microelectrodes. To this end, we present here the immobilization of the L-glutamate oxidase (GluOx) enzyme on the surface of GC microelectrodes to enable the catalysis of a chemical reaction between L-glutamate, oxygen, and water to produce H2O2, an electroactive byproduct that is readily detectable through voltammetry. This immobilization of GluOx on the surface of bare GC microelectrodes and the subsequent catalytic reduction in H2O2 through fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) helped demonstrate the indirect in vitro detection of glutamate, a non-electroactive molecule, at concentrations as low as 10 nM. The functionalized microelectrodes formed part of a four-channel array of microelectrodes (30 μm × 60 μm) on a 1.6 cm long neural probe that was supported on a flexible polymer, with potential for in vivo applications. The types and strengths of the bond between the GC microelectrode surface and its functional groups, on one hand, and glutamate and the immobilized functionalization matrix, on the other hand, were investigated through molecular dynamic (MD) modeling and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Both MD modeling and FTIR demonstrated the presence of several covalent bonds in the form of C-O (carbon–oxygen polar covalent bond), C=O (carbonyl), C-H (alkenyl), N-H (hydrogen bond), C-N (carbon–nitrogen single bond), and C≡N (triple carbon–nitrogen bond). Further, penetration tests on an agarose hydrogel model confirmed that the probes are mechanically robust, with their penetrating forces being much lower than the fracture force of the probe material. Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability, with a rising incidence in recent years. Factors such as age, sex, hypotension, low score on the Glasgow Coma Scale, use of invasive mechanical ventilation and vasopressors, etc., have been associated with mortality caused by TBI. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics that influence the mortality or survival of patients with TBI in a tertiary care hospital in Mexico. Methods: A sample of 94 patients aged 18 years or older, from both sexes, with an admitting diagnosis of mild-to-severe head trauma, with initial prehospital treatment, was taken. Data were extracted from the Single Registry of Patients with TBI at the Ixtapaluca Regional High Specialty Hospital (HRAEI). Normality tests were used to decide on the corresponding statistical analysis. Results: No factors associated with mortality were found; however, survival analysis showed that the presence of seizures, aggregate limb trauma, and subjects with diabetes mellitus, heart disease or patients with four concomitant comorbidities had 100% mortality. In addition, having seizures in the prehospital setting increased the risk of mortality four times. Although they did not have a direct association with mortality, they significantly decreased survival. A larger sample size is probably required to obtain an association with mortality. Conclusions: These results reflect the severity of the clinical situation in this population and, although no risk factors were identified, they enlighten us about the conditions presented by patients who died. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of hydrogel and zinc oxide nanoparticles on quinoa germination and establishment. Various doses of a commercial potassium-based hydrogel (0, 5, 7, and 9 g), each dissolved in one liter of rainwater, were applied. Additionally, 1.5 g of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) and pre-crushed nitrogen fertilizer, at a rate of 1.6 kg/ha, were added to the solution to achieve a homogeneous mixture. Following the application of hydrogel in the 10-linear-meter rows corresponding to each treatment area in every block, 25 seeds per linear meter of the "Blanca de Juli" quinoa cultivar were sown with a 4 cm spacing between the seeds. Subsequently, a thin layer of soil, approximately 0.5 cm thick, was used to cover the seeds. Ten seedlings were randomly selected and labeled for subsequent evaluations. The experimental design employed in this research was a completely randomized block design. The collected data underwent an analysis of variance, and the means of all the treatments were compared using Tukey's test with a 5% probability. Height and diameter evaluations of the plant neck were conducted every 45 days. The doses used in this study (5, 7, and 9 g of hydrogel per liter of water) significantly enhanced seed germination and increased the number of plants per linear meter (from 82.00 to 90.33) compared to the control dose without hydrogel (14.66), which resulted in an average of one plant per linear meter. Integrated crop–livestock systems (ICLS) have sustainably intensified modern agricultural practices worldwide. This research assessed how production systems and crop types impact the chemical properties of an Oxisol in the Brazilian Cerrado, the grain yield of corn intercropped with palisade grass (Urochloa) in the off-season in an ICLS, and the grain yield (GY) of soybean in succession. Intercropped and monocropped systems were assessed in a three-year field experiment: corn + Urochloa ruziziensis–soybean; corn + U. brizantha cv. Piatã–soybean; corn + U. brizantha cv. Paiaguás–soybean (ICL–Paiaguás); corn–soybean under a no-tillage system (NTS); corn–soybean under a conventional tillage system (CTS); Piatã grass–continuous grazing (Perennial Piatã); and Paiaguás grass–continuous grazing (Perennial Paiaguás). The residual impact of phosphate fertilization was more pronounced in the ICLS treatments. In the soil layer from 0.0 to 0.2 m depth, ICLS–Paiaguás and Perennial Piatã had the most positive effects on soil chemical quality. In the last year, grain yield was highest in corn monoculture under the NTS and soybean in succession under the ICLS. ICL–Paiaguás improved soil chemical properties for soybean in succession. These results confirm that an intermittent pasture system for legume crops in sequence is an alternative that can maintain or improve soil chemical composition, and that CTS should be avoided in tropical sandy soils. Approximately 80% of breast cancer (BC) cases are estrogen receptor positive (ER+) and sensitive to hormone treatment; Tamoxifen is a prodrug, and its main plasmatic active metabolites are 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-OH Tam) and endoxifen. Despite the effectiveness of tamoxifen therapy, resistance can be developed. An increment in eukaryotic initiation factor-4A complex (eIF4A) activity can result in tamoxifen-resistant tumor cells. For this work, we developed a cell variant resistant to 4-OH Tam and endoxifen, denominated MCF-7Var E; then, the aim of this research was to reverse the acquired resistance of this variant to tamoxifen metabolites by incorporating the natural compound auraptene. Combination treatments of tamoxifen derivatives and auraptene successfully sensitized the chemoresistant MCF-7Var E. Our data suggest a dual regulation of eIF4A and ER by auraptene. Joint treatments of 4-OH Tam and endoxifen with auraptene identified a novel focus for chemoresistance disruption. Synergy was observed using the auraptene molecule and tamoxifen-derived metabolites, which induced a sensitization in MCF-7Var E cells and ERα parental cells that was not observed in triple-negative breast cancer cells (TNBC). Our results suggest a synergistic effect between auraptene and tamoxifen metabolites in a resistant ER+ breast cancer model, which could represent the first step to achieving a pharmacologic strategy.
