Despite countless advances in recent years, exploration for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits remains challenging. This is particularly the case in the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, where outcrop is limited, weathering is deep and extensive, and metamorphism is variable. At Erayinia in the southern Kurnalpi terrane, intercepts of VMS-style mineralization occur along ~35 km strike length of stratigraphy, and a small Zn (-Cu) deposit has been defined at King (2.15 Mt at 3.47% Zn). An extensive aircore and reverse circulation drilling campaign on the regional stratigraphy identified additional VMS targets, including the King North prospect. Through a combination of detailed rock chip logging, petrography (inc. SEM imaging), and lithogeochemistry, we have reconstructed the volcanic stratigraphy and alteration halos associated with the King North prospect. Hydrothermal alteration assemblages and geochemical characteristics at King North (Mg-Si-K enrichment, Na depletion, and high Sb, Tl, Eu/Eu*, alteration index, CCPI, and normative corundum abundance values) are consistent with an overturned VMS system. The overturned footwall stratigraphy at King North is dominated by metamorphosed volcanic rocks, namely the following: garnet amphibolite (tholeiitic, basaltic), biotite amphibolite (andesitic, calc-alkaline), chlorite–quartz schist (dacitic), and narrow horizons of muscovite–quartz schist (dacitic to rhyolitic, HFSE-enriched). The hanging-wall to the Zn-bearing sequence is characterized by quartz–albite schists (metasedimentary rocks) and thick sequences of amphibolite (calc-alkaline, basaltic andesite). An iron-rich unit (>25% Fe2O3) of chlorite–actinolite–quartz schist, interpreted as a meta-exhalite, is associated with significant Cu-Au mineralization, adjacent to a likely syn-volcanic fault. Extensive Mg metasomatism of the immediate felsic footwall is represented by muscovite–chlorite schist. Diamond drilling into the deep hanging-wall stratigraphy at both King North and King has also revealed the potential for additional, stacked VMS prospective horizons in the greenstone belt stratigraphy. The discovery of HFSE-enriched rhyolites, zones of muscovite–chlorite schist, presence of abundant sulfide-rich argillaceous metasedimentary rocks, and a second upper meta-exhalite horizon further expand the exploration potential of the King–King North region. Our combined petrographic and lithogeochemical approach demonstrates that complex volcanic lithologies and VMS alteration signatures can be established across variably metamorphosed greenstone belts. This has wider implications for more cost-effective exploration across the Yilgarn Craton, utilizing RC drilling to reconstruct the local geology and identify proximal halos, and limiting more costly diamond drilling to key areas of complex geology and deeper EM targets. The greenstone belts of the Crixás-Goiás Domain are economically important due to significant epigenetic gold deposits and the potential for under-researched syngenetic deposits. The gold occurrences associated with the volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the region are documented only in the volcanoclastic rocks of the Digo-Digo Formation, Serra de Santa Rita greenstone belt. The objective of this work is to discuss the efficiency of the induced polarization methods in the time and frequency domains for differentiating and identifying potentially mineralized zones in the exhalites associated with the VMS-type gold of the Digo-Digo Formation. Data were acquired using a multielectrode resistivity meter with the dipole–dipole array and 10 m spacing between electrodes, as well as different current injection times (250, 1000, and 2000 ms). After the electrical data processing and inversion, the sections were integrated into ternary red-green-blue and cyan-magenta-yellow models to highlight areas of high chargeability, low resistivity, and high metal factor (frequency domain) and, thus, map the higher potential zones to host polarizable metallic minerals. The geological–geophysical model elaborated from the correlation of electrical and surface geological data allowed us to identify four anomalous areas related to potential mineralized zones. The geological data confirm that two targets are associated with the geological contacts between metamafic and intermediate metavolcanic units and the exhalative horizon. One of the targets coincides with a sulfide-rich exhalative horizon (VMS), while the last target occurs in the occurrence area of metaultramafic rocks, where gold mineralization occurrences have not been previously described, being a promising target for future investigations. The paper presents the first SIMS SHRIMP U-Pb data for zircon from an olivine horizon within the Nyud intrusion of the ore-bearing layered Monchegorsk pluton (Monchepluton) in the Kola Region, Russia. A 100–150 m-thick olivine horizon occurs nearly horizontally between the melanocratic and mesocratic norite of the Nyud intrusion, which disturbs its normal cumulus stratigraphic sequence. In addition, the pyroxene-plagioclase hornfelses are present at the upper contact with the olivine horizon. Twenty-three zircon grains were extracted from the large-volume olivine plagio-orthopyroxenite sample and clustered into two populations. The first population of magmatic zircon (n = 8) has a concordant and weighted average 207Pb/206Pb age of 2484.3 ± 5.6 Ma, which characterizes the formation time of the olivine horizon rocks. This serves as evidence of the olivine horizon that forms as a result of additional magma injection, which does not contradict the geological data. The 207Pb/206Pb age of single-grain zircon is 2414 ± 25 Ma, which indicates the time of postmagmatic transformations. The second population of zircon (n = 16) has a concordant and weighted average U-Pb age of 2700.6 ± 4.6 Ma, which indicates zircon absorption by olivine horizon magma probably from the rocks of the Archean greenstone belt. The Wawa Gold Corridor, a series of Archean orogenic Au deposits in the Michipicoten greenstone belt, Canada, comprises two styles of Au mineralization: (1) syn-deformation gold associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite; and (2) late- to post-deformation gold associated with chalcopyrite and Bi-Te(-S) phases. Through petrographic and mineral–chemical analysis, it was determined that gold in the latter assemblages precipitated from Bi-rich polymetallic melts during hydrothermal overprinting of the earlier Au-As-S mineralization; this event was likely driven by the emplacement of Archean lamprophyres. The formation and evolution of these melts was governed by fluid–pyrite reaction interfaces, where the bulk composition of the melts was broadly controlled by the trace-element chemistry of the sulphide minerals in the local host rocks. This suggests that the melt-formation event involved mobilization of existing metal endowments related to early Au events, rather than addition of new Au, Bi, and Te. Thus, the deposition of high-grade Au by Bi-rich melts was dependent on pre-existing sulphide mineralization, both as a source of metals and as micro-environments that stabilized the melts. The paragenesis documented in the Wawa Gold Corridor (i.e., early hydrothermal Au-As-S mineralization and late melt-related Au-Bi-Te mineralization) has been previously recognized in numerous other orogenic and non-orogenic Au deposits. Herein, it is suggested that this apparent consistency in the timing of melt events across multiple systems probably reflects the physicochemical conditions (i.e., fO2-aH2S) of orogenic fluids being incompatible with molten Bi. Bi-rich polymetallic melts are hence unlikely to form primary Au mineralization in orogenic systems but can, however, have a significant impact on the ultimate deposit-scale distribution of Au via secondary mobilization and enrichment. This study investigates the structural control of the numerous gold occurrences in the southern part of the Barberton Greenstone Belt in the Malolotja and Steynsdorp areas. The gold-bearing event distribution is studied using field structural geology associated with a petrological and microstructural analysis. Three major tectonic events have been identified in quartz veins and direct country rocks. The first event (De) created a regional schistosity (Se), probably associated with an early thrusting event. The second event (Df) is related to a large-scale folding, which formed the anticline at Steynsdorp and synform at Malolotja. It resulted from a main E–W direction of shortening and is responsible for the folding of the Se schistosity. It formed a N–S-striking axial planar cleavage (Sf), observed and associated with the emplacement of the main gold-bearing veins. The mineralised system exhibits a complex vein network, in which shallow dipping veins have developed coevally with steep west- and east-dipping veins. A third deformation event (Dl) produced by NE–SW shortening is related to the late barren hydrothermal quartz vein formation. Mineralogically, the veins are filled with abundant quartz, and scarce tourmaline and feldspars. Alteration halos composed of neoformed tourmaline and plagioclase within a talc and white mica matrix developed specifically during the late Dl event. A model of regional deformation giving rise to large-scale folds and quartz vein formation formed in response to E–W and NE–SW directions of shortening globally is proposed and discussed in this paper. In Cameroon, most of the iron formation occurrences reported are found within the Nyong and Ntem Complexes. The Anyouzok iron deposit is located in the Nyong Complex greenstone belts, which represent the NW margin of this Congo craton. The main lithological units comprise the iron formations (IFs) unit, consisting of banded IFs (BIFs) and sheared BIFs (SBIFs), and the associated metavolcanic rocks unit consisting of mafic granulite, garnet amphibolite, and biotite gneiss. Within the Anyouzok area, BIFs are rare, while SBIFs are ubiquitous. This study reports the petrography, mineralogy, and whole rock geochemistry of IFs and interbedded metavolcanic rocks of the Anyouzok iron deposit. The abundance of cavities, higher Fe contents (49.60–55.20 wt%), and strong Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 2.14–3.17) within the SBIFs compared to the BIFs suggest that SBIFs were upgraded through post-depositional hydrothermal alteration activities. REE signatures indicate the contribution of both seawater and hydrothermal fluids during BIFs precipitation. Mafic granulite and garnet amphibolite protoliths were derived from the partial melting of a metasomatized spinel lherzolite depleted mantle source. The overall compositional variations of the Anyouzok IFs and interbedded metavolcanic rocks endorse an Algoma-type formation deposited in the back-arc basin under suboxic to anoxic conditions. Two main stages of formation of gold deposits are identified in the north-eastern part of the Fennoscandian Shield—Neoarchean (2.7–2.6 Ga) and Paleoproterozoic (1.92–1.74 Ga). These were the stages of rapid growth of the continental crust of the Earth and the consolidation of the ancient supercontinents, Kenorland in the Neoarchean, and Fennoscandia (or Columbia) in the Paleoproterozoic. Gold deposits and occurrences, which formed in the Archean (Oleninskoe and Nyalm in the Kolmozero–Voron'ya belt, and the Olenegorsk group of BIF deposits) were later metamorphosed in the Paleoproterozoic, and isotope data for the rocks and minerals of these deposits detect both Archean and Paleoproterozoic events. The Paleoproterozoic stage was the most important for the formation of gold deposits in the region, as at this stage the deposits formed not only in the Proterozoic greenstone belts, but in those Archean belts as well, which were involved in the Svecofennian tectonic processes in the Paleoproterozoic. As it is shown in the example of the deposits in the Central Lapland Paleoproterozoic belt, gold mineralization formed with a series of impulses of hydrothermal activity, and these impulses correlate with the formation of different generations of minor granite intrusions and dykes. The Kapuskasing Structural Zone transects the Wawa and Abitibi greenstone belts in the Superior province of the Canadian Shield. At the southern margin of the Kapuskasing Structural Zone (KSZ), the Borden Gold deposit hosts low-grade-gold mineralization within upper amphibolite- to granulite-facies sillimanite-garnet-biotite gneisses. Here, we present the geochemistry and Lu-Hf geochronological studies of a gold-hosting garnet-bearing gneiss to constrain the formation history of the deposit and regional geological history. The garnet is almandine-rich, and contains inclusions of quartz, biotite, pyrite, and zircon. The absence of chemical zoning in garnet is likely due to intracrystalline diffusion at peak metamorphic temperatures. The 176Lu-176Hf internal isochron of two garnet fractions and three corresponding whole-rock splits from a gneissic unit yield a precise internal isochron age at 2629.0 ± 4.3 Ma (MSWD = 0.66), with an initial 176Hf/177Hf = 0.281210 ± 0.000010 corresponding to an εHfi = +4.1. This signature suggests a mafic source, which was derived from a long-term depleted reservoir, for this metasediment. The Lu-Hf age is consistent with the youngest age population of zircons from the paragneisses, which were previously dated in the area. Zircon provides essential information on the age and oxidation state of magmatic systems and can be used to characterize magmatic-hydrothermal Au mineralizing systems. Using the Douay intrusion-related gold system (IRGS) as a type example of Neoarchean syenite-associated mineralization (Abitibi greenstone belt), we demonstrate that zircon from altered quartz-monzonite rocks can also be used to infer the age of a magmatic-hydrothermal event. Here, zircon chemistry is used to identify the following sequence of events at the Douay exploration project: (1) the crystallization of zircon at ~2690 Ma in evolved residual melts with distinct U-contents (quartz-monzonite magma); (2) the extensive radiation damage for the U-rich grains over a period of ~10–15 My; and (3) the alteration of zircon grains at ~2676 Ma by interaction with magmatic-hydrothermal mineralizing fluids derived from syenite and carbonatite intrusive phases. This study also distinguishes extensively altered zircon grains from pristine to least-altered zircon formed in distinct magmatic environments using a Th/U vs. U discrimination diagram. Greenstone belts in the West African Craton (WAC) are separated by several generations of granitoids intruded at ca. 2.18-1.98 Ga. Simultaneous folding and exhumation play an important role in the formation of greenstone-granitoid belts. However, the overall tectonic regime and origin of granitoids remain controversial. In this study, we present the estimates of the mantle potential temperature (Tp) for the WAC, which yields values of about 1500-1600 °C, pressure estimates of initial and final melting yield values of about 3.7-5.2 GPa and 1-1.3 GPa, respectively. Subsequently, 2D thermo-mechanical models have been constructed to explore the width of volcano-sedimentary basin on spatial-temporal evolution of diapirs that emplaced in the lower-middle crust during compression. The models show that the width of the volcano-sediment layer plays an important role in the formation mechanisms of greenstone-granitoid belts. The lower crust beneath sedimentary sequences is deformed into a buckle fold during the first compressional stage, through which relief uplifts slowly. Subsequently, the buckle fold is further deformed into several individual folds. Diapirs made of lower crust rocks ascend and emplace in the middle-upper crust resulting from instability. Benefitting from the mantle temperature, the pressure estimates and the numerical modelling results, a new geodynamic model was constructed. This model indicates that a series of sheet-like granitoids possibly derived from either subducted mélanges, lower crust and/or mantle melting that are accumulated at depths of the subcontinental mantle would channel along diapirs before feeding the upper crust. When the granitoids arrive at the solidified lids of the diapirs, they would favour migrating horizontally and intrude into the upper crust through weakening zones between the diapirs. Our geodynamic model also suggests an asymmetry of structures between the upper and middle-lower crust, with the dome-like granitoids overlying high-grade sedimentary synforms and high-grade diapirs underlying low-grade greenstone belts. Archean greenstone belts are renowned for their Au endowment. Gold can be associated with orogenic Au style of mineralization and with diorite-hosted Au-Cu disseminated sulfides interpreted as a porphyry style of mineralization. The Regnault Au project, located in the Frotet–Evans greenstone belt (Superior craton), is a structurally-controlled and diorite-hosted mineralization with an unclear metallogenic model. The aim of this study is to evaluate the fertility of the Regnault granodiorite-diorite-gabbro intrusive. Using whole-rock chemistry and petrological observations, it is concluded that the intrusive suite derives from a differentiated and water-bearing magma extracted from the metasomatized mantle. Amphibole chemistry indicates that the magma was moderately oxidized and that it emplaced at a shallow depth. It is concluded that the Regnault intrusive suite displays several characteristics favorable to the exsolution of magmatic fluids in the upper crust and that the Regnault Au mineralization potentially corresponds to, at least in part, a magmatic-hydrothermal system. Archean banded iron formations (BIF) represent a major contributor to better constraining and assessing the paleogeography and evolution of Archean cratons. In this context, we conducted an exhaustive sampling and analysis campaign of BIF units in the Congo Craton, covering several greenstone belts within the Ivindo, Kelle-Mbomo, and Chaillu blocks. The REE + Y patterns suggest: (1) Interaction of seawater with Fe-oxyhydroxides, as illustrated by strong REE enrichment coupled with La and Y enrichment; (2) contributions from high-temperature (>250 °C) hydrothermal fluids, illustrated by positive Eu anomalies; and (3) detrital input as suggested by relatively consistent REE concentrations and a chondritic Y/Ho ratio. These observations suggest a typical environment of Algoma-type BIF deposition. Moreover, assessment of the Ce anomalies in a combination of HREE enrichment indicates that some basins in the Chaillu and Ivindo blocks may have known potential oxygen-rich episodes in the early Archean during the deposition of these BIFs. In order to better constrain the utility of multispectral datasets in the characterization of surface materials, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data were evaluated in the discrimination of geological classes in the Cape Smith Belt of Quebec, a greenstone belt that hosts Early Proterozoic units including those of the Purtuniq ophiolite. Ground-based measurements collected for the study area highlight the importance of chemical alteration in controlling the reflectance properties of key geological classes. The spatial distribution of exposed lithologies in the study area was determined through (1) image classification using a feedforward backpropagation neural network classifier; and (2) generation of fraction images for spectral end members using a linear unmixing algorithm and ground reflectance data. Despite some shortcomings, the database of surface cover generated by the neural network classifier is a useful representation of the spatial distribution of exposed geological materials in the study area, with an overall agreement with ground truth of 87.7%. In contrast, the fraction images generated through unmixing are poor representations of ground truth for several key lithological classes. These results underscore both the considerable utility and marked limitations of Landsat TM data in the mapping of igneous and metamorphic lithologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mineralization of Te and Se was found in gold deposits and uranium occurrences, located in the Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts in Northern Fennoscandia. These deposits are of different genesis, but all of them formed at the late stages of the Svecofennian orogeny, and they have common geochemical association of metals Au, Cu, Co, U, Bi, Te, and Se. The prevalent Te minerals are Ni and Fe tellurides melonite and frohbergite, and Pb telluride altaite. Bismuth tellurides were detected in many deposits in the region, but usually not more than in two–three grains. The main selenide in the studied deposits is clausthalite. The most diversified selenium mineralization (clausthalite, klockmannite, kawazulite, skippenite, poubaite) was discovered in the deposits, located in the Russian part of the Salla-Kuolajarvi belt. Consecutive change of sulfides by tellurides, then by selenotellurides and later by selenides, indicates increase of selenium fugacity, fSe2, in relation to fTe2 and to fS2in the mineralizing fluids. Gold-, selenium-, and tellutium-rich fluids are potentially linked with the post-Svecofennian thermal event and intrusion of post-orogenic granites (1.79–1.75 Ga) in the Salla-Kuolajarvi and Perapohja belts. Study of fluid inclusions in quartz from the deposits in the Salla-Kuolajarvi belt showed that the fluids were high-temperature (240–300 °C) with high salinity (up to 26% NaCl-eq.). Composition of all studied selenotellurides, kawazulite-skippenite, and poubaite varies significantly in Se/Te ratio and in Pb content. Skippenite and kawazulite show the full range of Se-Te isomorphism. Ni-Co and Co-Fe substitution plays an important role in melonite and mattagamite: high cobalt was detected in nickel telluride in the Juomasuo and Konttiaho, and mattagamites from Ozernoe and Juomasuo contain significant Fe. In the Ozernoe uranium occurrence, the main mineral-concentrator of selenium is molybdenite, which contains up to 16 wt.% of Se in the marginal parts of the grains. The molybdenite is rich in Re (up to 1.2 wt.%), and the impurity of Re is irregularly distributed in molybdenite flakes and spherulites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In gold-endowed greenstone belts, ore bodies generally correspond to orogenic gold systems (OGS) formed during the main deformation stage that led to craton stabilization (syntectonic period). Most OGS deposits postdate and locally overprint magmatic-hydrothermal systems, such as Au-Cu porphyry that mostly formed during the main magmatic stage (synvolcanic period) and polymetallic intrusion-related gold systems (IRGS) of the syntectonic period. Porphyries are associated with tonalite-dominated and sanukitoid plutons, whereas most IRGS are related to alkaline magmatism. As reviewed here, most intrusion-associated mineralization in the Abitibi greenstone belt is the result of complex and local multistage metallogenic processes. A new classification is proposed that includes (1) OGS and OGS-like deposits dominated by metamorphic and magmatic fluids, respectively; (2) porphyry and IRGS that may contain gold remobilized during subsequent deformation episodes; (3) porphyry and IRGS that are overprinted by OGS. Both OGS and OGS-like deposits are associated with crustal-scale faults and display similar gold-deposition mechanisms. The main difference is that magmatic fluid input may increase the oxidation state and CO2 content of the mineralizing fluid for OGS-like deposits, while OGS are characterized by the circulation of reduced metamorphic fluids. For porphyry and IRGS, mineralizing fluids and metals have a magmatic origin. Porphyries are defined as base metal and gold-bearing deposits associated with large-volume intrusions, while IRGS are gold deposits that may display a polymetallic signature and that can be associated with small-volume syntectonic intrusions. Some porphyry, such as the Côté Gold deposit, demonstrate that magmatic systems can generate economically significant gold mineralization. In addition, many deposits display evidence of multistage processes and correspond to gold-bearing or gold-barren magmatic-hydrothermal systems overprinted by OGS or by gold-barren metamorphic fluids. In most cases, the source of gold remains debated. Whether magmatic activity was essential or marginal for fertilizing the upper crust during the Neoarchean remains a major topic for future research, and petrogenetic investigations may be paramount for distinguishing gold-endowed from barren greenstone belts. The Pellapahk Cu-Mo and Oleninskoe Au-Ag deposits in the western segment of the Russian Arctic in the Kolmozero–Voronya greenstone belt are considered two parts of an Archean (2.83–2.82 Ga) porphyry-epithermal system, probably the oldest one defined in the Fennoscandian Shield. Formation of the Oleninskoe Au-Ag deposit at the epithermal stage of the system is indicated by the spatial and genetic relationships with the sills of granite porphyry, the geochemical association of ore elements (Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Sb, As), an Au/Ag ratio of <0.2, and the multiplicity of silver mineralization with different Ag, Cu, Pb, Sb sulfosalts. The geological–structural characteristics of the Oleninskoe and the Pellapahk, i.e., their location in a shear zone, the morphology and size of ore bodies, the scale of the deposits, and the intensity and zoning of rock alteration, do not oppose this model. Mineralized rocks of the Pellapahk Cu-Mo and Oleninskoe Au-Ag deposits were amphibolite metamorphosed in the Neoarchean and again in the Paleoproterozoic. Structures of sulfide melt crystallization formed in the ores during metamorphism, those are fine intergrowths of galena, argentotetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, pyrrhotite, ullmannite, stutzite, and other mineral phases of low-melting-point metals such as Ag, Cu, Pb, Sb, As, Bi. The Quadrilátero Ferrífero region is located in the extreme southeast of the Brasiliano São Francisco craton, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. It is composed of (i) Archean TTG granite-gneaissic terranes; (ii) the Archean Rio das Velhas greenstone belt; (iii) the Proterozoic metasedimentary and metavolcano-sedimentary covers. The Rio das Velhas rocks were deposited in the synformal NW–SE-directed Nova Lima basin. The Archean deformation converted the Nova Lima basin into an ample synclinorium with an eastern inverted flank. Archean orogenic gold mineralization within the Rio das Velhas greenstone belt rocks is controlled by NNW–SSE-directed, Archean regional shear zones subparallel to the strata of the Nova Lima synclinorium borders. Transamazonian and Brasiliano orogenies are superposed onto the Archean structures that control gold mineralization. In the eastern domain, Brasiliano fold-and-fault belts prevail, whereas in the western domain Archean and Transamazonian structures abound. The present study focus mainly is the western domain where the Cuiabá, Morro Velho, Raposos, Lamego and Faria deposits are located. Gold orebodies plunge to the E–NE and are tectonically controlled by the Archean D1–D2 deformation. The D3 Transamazonian compression—Which had a SE–NW vector sub-parallel to the regional mineralized Archean foliation/bedding—Buckled these structures, resulting in commonly open, synformal and antiformal regional folds. These are well documented near the gold deposits, with NE–SW axial traces and fold axes plunging to E–NE. Such folds are normal to inverted, NW-verging, with an axial planar foliation dipping moderately to the SE. The Transamazonian compression has only been responsible for the reorientation of the mineralized Archean gold ores, due to coaxial refolding characterized by an opposite tectonic transport. It has therefore not caused any other significant changes. Thrust shear zones, sub-parallel to the strong Transamazonian foliation, have given rise to localized metric segmentation and to the dislocation of gold orebodies. Throughout the region, along the towns of Nova Lima to Sabará, structures pertaining to the Brasiliano Araçuaí orogeny are represented only by gentle folding and by a discrete, non-pervasive crenulation cleavage. Neoarchean syntectonic intrusions from the Chibougamau area, northeastern Abitibi Subprovince (greenstone belt), may be genetically related to intrusion related gold mineralization. These magmatic-hydrothermal systems share common features with orogenic gold deposits, such as spatial and temporal association with syntectonic magmatism. Genetic association with magmatism, however, remains controversial for many greenstone belt hosted Au deposits. To precisely identify the link between syntectonic magmas and gold mineralization in the Abitibi Subprovince, major and trace-element compositions of whole rock, zircon, apatite, and amphibole grains were measured for five intrusions in the Chibougamau area; the Anville, Saussure, Chevrillon, Opémisca, and Lac Line Plutons. The selected intrusions are representative of the chemical diversity of synvolcanic (TTG suite) and syntectonic (e.g., sanukitoid, alkaline intrusion) magmatism. Chemical data enable calculation of oxygen fugacity and volatile content, and these parameters were interpreted using data collected by electron microprobe and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The zircon and apatite data and associated oxygen fugacity values in magma indicate that the youngest magmas are the most oxidized. Moreover, similar oxygen fugacity and high volatile content for both the Saussure Pluton and the mineralized Lac Line intrusion may indicate a possible prospective mineralized system associated with the syntectonic Saussure intrusion. In order to determine the U-Pb crystallization age of zircon from the tourmaline-muscovite granites of the Kolmozero–Voronya greenstone belt located in the northeastern Fennoscandian Shield (Kola Peninsula), an isotope-geochronological study of the zircon grains was performed using a SHRIMP-RG microprobe. The belt is represented by the Archaean volcano-sedimentary rocks (2.9–2.8 Ga). Deposits of rare-metal pegmatites (Li and Cs with associated Nb, Ta, and Be) occur within the belt and on its margins. The age of the pegmatites within the belt was estimated at 2.7–2.6 Ga. Until now, there has been no generally accepted view on the genetic relation of the pegmatites with granite. Various authors have suggested that the pegmatites could potentially be associated with many type of granitoids within the region, i.e., plagiogranites, tonalites, amphibole-biotite granodiorites, microcline granites, alkaline granites, or muscovite-tourmaline granites. Zircon crystals from the muscovite-tourmaline granites are heterogeneous; they have less altered cores and strongly altered rims. The zircon cores are slightly enriched in U at a value of 173–1030 ppm, Th/U = 0.1–0.4. The zircons' rims are heavily enriched in U at a value of 700–3300 ppm, Th/U = 0.03–0.08, indicating metasomatic processes. Zircon characteristics show that it crystallized from a melt enriched in a fluid phase. Fluid activity lasted after zircon crystallization as reflected in the irregular composition of the mineral and its rare earth element (REE) patterns that are typical of a metasomatic zircon. The computed zircon crystallization temperature in the tourmaline-muscovite granites is in the range of 650–850 °C. The discordant age calculated for five analyzed points of the zircon crystal cores is 2802 ± 13 Ma. The discordant age for four analyzed points of the zircon crystal rims is found to be 2728 ± 14 Ma. On the basis of the obtained isotope-geochronological data, we conclude that the tourmaline-muscovite granites located in the immediate vicinity of rare-metal pegmatite veins are the most probable source of matter for the pegmatites. The Moodies Group, the uppermost unit in the Barberton Greenstone Belt (BGB) in South Africa, is a ~3.7-km-thick coarse clastic succession accumulated on terrestrial-to-shallow marine settings at around 3.22 Ga. The multiple sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite of Moodies intervals was newly obtained to examine the influence of these depositional settings on the sulfur isotope record. Conglomerate and sandstone rocks were collected from three synclines north of the Inyoka Fault of the central BGB, namely, the Eureka, Dycedale, and Saddleback synclines. The sulfur isotopic composition of pyrite was analyzed by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) for 6 samples from the three synclines and by Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IR-MS) for 17 samples from a stratigraphic section in the Saddleback Syncline. The present results show a signal of mass-independent fractionation of sulfur isotopes (S-MIF), although t-tests statistically demonstrated that the Moodies S-MIF signals (mostly 0‰ < ∆33S < +0.5‰) are significantly small compared to the signal of the older Paleoarchean (3.6–3.2 Ga) records. These peculiar signatures might be related to initial deposition of detrital pyrite of juvenile origin from the surrounding intrusive (tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite; TTG) and felsic volcanic rocks, and/or to secondary addition of hydrothermal sulfur during late metasomatism. Moreover, fast accumulation (~0.1–1 mm/year) of the Moodies sediments might have led to a reduced accumulation of sulfur derived from an atmospheric source during their deposition. As a result, the sulfur isotopic composition of the sediments may have become susceptible to the secondary addition of metasomatic sulfur on a mass balance point of view. The sulfur isotopic composition of Moodies pyrite is similar to the composition of sulfides from nearby gold mines. It suggests that, after the Moodies deposition, metasomatic pyrite formation commonly occurred north of the Inyoka Fault in the central BGB at 3.1–3.0 Ga. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Archean greenstone belts, magmatism is dominated by intrusive and volcanic rocks with tholeiitic affinities, as well as tonalite- and granodiorite-dominated large-volume batholiths, i.e., tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) suites. These intrusions are associated with poorly documented mineralization (Cu-Au porphyries) that, in the Neoarchean Abitibi Subprovince (>2.79 to ~2.65 Ga), Superior Province, Canada, are associated with diorite bearing plutons, i.e., tonalite–trondhjemite–diorite (TTD) suites. The importance of TTG versus TTD suites in the evolution of greenstone belts and of their magmatic-hydrothermal systems and related mineralization is unconstrained. The aim of this study was to portray the chemistry and distribution of these suites in the Abitibi Subprovince. The study used data compiled by the geological surveys of Québec and Ontario to evaluate the chemistry of TTG and TTD suites and uncovered two coeval magmas that significantly differentiated (fractional crystallization mostly): 1) a heavy rare earth elements (HREE)-depleted tonalitic magma from high pressure melting of an hydrated basalt source; and 2) a hybrid HREE-undepleted magma that may be a mixture of mantle-derived (tholeiite) and tonalitic melts. The HREE-depleted rocks (mostly tonalite and granodiorite) display chemical characteristics of TTG suites (HREE, Ti, Nb, Ta, Y, and Sr depletion, lack of mafic unit, Na-rich), while the other rocks (tonalite and diorite) formed TTD suites. Tonalite-dominated magmatism, in the Abitibi Subprovince, comprises crustal melts as well as a significant proportion of mantle-derived magmas and this may be essential for Cu-Au magmatic-hydrothermal mineralizing systems. The Oleninskoe intrusion-related gold–silver deposit is the first deposit in the Precambrian of the Fennoscandian Shield, where mustard gold has been identified. The mustard gold replaces küstelite with impurities of Sb and, probably, gold-bearing dyscrasite and aurostibite. The mosaic structure of the mustard gold grains is due to different orientations and sizes of pores in the matrix of noble metals. Zonation in the mustard gold grains is connected with mobilization and partial removal of silver from küstelite, corresponding enrichment of the residual matter in gold, and also with the change in the composition of the substance filling the pores. Micropores in the mustard gold are filled with iron, antimony or thallium oxides, silver chlorides, bromides, and sulfides. The formation of mustard gold with chlorides and bromides shows that halogens played an important role in the remobilization of noble metals at the stage of hypergene transformation of the Oleninskoe deposit. Abiotic methane is widely documented in seeps, springs and aquifers associated with mafic-ultramafic rocks in Phanerozoic ophiolites, peridotite massifs and intrusions worldwide. Chromitites in ophiolites, in particular, have been interpreted as the rocks potentially generating methane though CO2 hydrogenation. Here, we document, for the first time, the presence of methane within chromitites in South America. We analyzed, through milling and gas extraction, the content of gas occluded in Cedrolina chromitite samples, belonging to the Pilar de Goiás greenstone belt in Brazil. The chromitites display significant gas concentrations up to 0.31 µg CH4/grock and 2800 ppmv of hydrogen, while the host talc schist is devoid of gas. Stable C isotope composition of methane (δ13C from −30 to −39.2‰) and the absence of organic-matter rich metasediments in the region suggest an abiotic origin. Hydrogen and methane concentrations appear related to high-Cr chromite modal content and to the presence of Ni-sulfides/alloys, which are potential catalysts of CO2 hydrogenation at temperatures above 200 °C. Accessory ruthenium-bearing minerals occurring in the chromitites could also act as catalysts, even at lower temperatures. Geothermometry of chlorite found in the chromitites constrains serpentinization at ~250 °C, during lower greenschist facies retrometamorphism. Hydrogen could be autochthonous, and thus formed under similar temperature, which we hypothesize represents the upper limit for abiotic methane generation in the area (250 °C). The Cedrolina chromitites are the first example of CH4 occurrence in ultramafic rocks related to an Archean-Paleoproterozoic greenstone belt. The Chibougamau pluton is a Neoarchean multiphase intrusion that is related to Cu–Au porphyry-style deposits. In Archean greenstone belts, porphyries are marginal and poorly documented mineralizations. Such deposits are, however, important in the Chibougamau area, where the main historical mining camp (Central Camp) is a magmato-hydrothermal system. Understanding such systems requires documenting the related magmatic rocks. This contribution focuses on the petrogenesis of the Chibougamau pluton to elucidate how the intrusion participated in Cu and Au mineralized systems. Using field descriptions, whole-rock analyses, and petrographic observations, we describe the source, emplacement mechanism, and chemical evolution of the Chibougamau pluton. The Chibougamau pluton is a TTD (tonalite-trondhjemite-diorite) suite that contains more K than most plutons of similar age. This suite was produced from a heterogeneous source; i.e., a hydrated basalt and possibly a metasomatized mantle. These are rare (and thus prospective) characteristics for an Archean intrusion. In addition, differentiation may have been sufficiently prolonged in the diorite phase to concentrate metals and fluids in the evolved magma. The Metal Earth project acquired 927 km of deep seismic reflection profiles from August to November of 2017. Seismic data acquired in this early stage of the Metal Earth project benefited greatly from recent advances in the petroleum sector as well as those in mineral exploration. Vibroseis acquisition with receivers having a 5 Hz response (10 dB down) generated records from a sweep signal starting at 2 Hz, sweeping up to 150 Hz or 200 Hz. Not only does this broadband signal enhance reflections from the deepest to the shallowest crust, but it also helps the use of full waveform inversion (e.g., to mitigate cycle-skipping) and related techniques. Metal Earth regional-scale transects using over 5000 active sensors target mineralizing fluid pathways throughout the crust, whereas higher spatial-resolution reflection and full-waveform surveys target structures at mine camp scales. Because Metal Earth was proposed to map and compare entire Archean ore and geologically similar non-ore systems, regional sections cover the entire crust to the Moho in the Abitibi and Wabigoon greenstone belts of the Superior craton in central Canada. Where the new sections overlap with previous Lithoprobe surveys, a clear improvement in reflector detection and definition is observed. Improvements are here attributed to the increased bandwidth of the signal, better estimates of refraction and reflection velocities used in processing, and especially the pre-stack time migration of the data. Location of the deposits and occurrences of gold mineralization in metamorphic complexes of the Kola region is controlled by tectonic zones at the regional scale at the boundaries of major segments of the Fennoscandian Shield. Three zones are the most important: (1) the system of Neoarchean greenstone belts Kolmozero–Voron'ya–Ura-guba along the southern boundary of the Murmansk craton; (2) the suture, delineating the core of the Lapland–Kola orogeny in the north; and (3) the series of overthrusts and faults at the eastern flank of the Salla–Kuolajarvi belt. Gold deposits and occurrences are located within greenstone belts of Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic age, and hosted by rocks of different primary compositions (mafic metavolcanics, diorite porphyry, and metasedimentary terrigenous rocks). The grade of metamorphism varies from greenschist to upper amphibolite facies, but the mineralized rocks are mainly lower amphibolite metamorphosed, close to the transition from greenschist to amphibolite facies. Gold deposits and occurrences in the northeastern part of the Fennoscandian Shield formed during two periods: the Neoarchean 2.7–2.6 Ga and the Paleoproterozoic 1.9–1.7 Ga. According to paleo-geodynamic reconstructions, these were the periods of collisional and accretionary orogeny in the region. Those Archean greenstone belts, which were reworked in the Paleoproterozoic (e.g., Strel'na and Tiksheozero belts), can contain gold deposits of Paleoproterozoic age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The titanomagnetite of the Lac Doré Complex, an Archean layered intrusion that is located in the Abitibi greenstone belt in Québec (Canada), contains a wide variety of exsolution textures, which are the remnants of a complex cooling history. In the present study, we reconstitute the decomposition stages of the original solid solution in order to explain the formation of ilmenite, Al-spinel (hercynite and gahnite), and corundum exsolutions in magnetite. This was conducted through a detailed mineralogical and textural examination and in situ determination of mineral chemistry. Our investigation reveals two discrete types of ilmenite exsolutions, which are ascribed, respectively, to the oxidation of ulvöspinel at temperatures above and below the magnetite-ulvöspinel solvus. Exsolutions of Al-spinel result from either a decrease in the solubility of the (FeZn)Al2O4 components upon cooling, or local excesses of Al and Zn due to the removal of ulvöspinel during the early oxidation. The origin of corundum is ascribed to the oxidation of pre-existing hercynite exsolutions. The trace element composition of the titanomagnetite indicates stratigraphic reversals in Cr, Mg, Co, Ti, and Si and important changes in redox conditions. The Tartoq greenstone belt of southwest Greenland represents a well-preserved section through >3 Ga old oceanic crust and has the potential to provide important constraints on the composition and geodynamics of the Archaean crust. Based on a detailed structural examination, it has been proposed that the belt records an early style of horizontal convergent plate tectonics where elevated temperatures, compared to the modern-day, led to repeated aborted subduction and tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite (TTG) type melt formation. This interpretation hinges on pressure–temperature (P–T) constraints for the belt, for which only preliminary estimates are currently available. Here, we present a detailed study of the pressure–temperature conditions and metamorphic histories for rocks from all fragments of the Tartoq belt using pseudosection modelling and geothermobarometry. We show that peak conditions are predominantly amphibolite facies, but range from 450 to 800 °C at up to 7.5 kbar; reaching anatexis with formation of TTG-type partial melts in the Bikuben segment. Emplacement of the Tartoq segments into the host TTG gneisses took place at approximately 3 Ga at 450–500 °C and 4 kbar as constrained from actinolite–chlorite–epidote–titanite–quartz parageneses, and was followed by extensive hydrothermal retrogression related to formation of shear zone-hosted gold mineralisation. Tourmaline thermometry and retrograde assemblages in mafic and ultramafic lithologies constrain this event to 380 ± 50 °C at a pressure below 1 kbar. Our results show that the convergent tectonics recorded by the Tartoq belt took place at a P–T gradient markedly shallower than that of modern-day subduction, resulting in a hot, weak and buoyant slab unable to generate and transfer 'slab pull', nor sustain a single continuous downgoing slab. The Tartoq belt suggests that convergence was instead accomplished by under-stacking of slabs from repeated aborted subduction. The shallow P–T path combined with thermal relaxation following subduction stalling subsequently resulted in partial melting and formation of TTG melts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three major gold deposits, Matandani, Kukuluma, and Area 3, host several million ouncez (Moz) of gold, along a ~5 km long, WNW trend in the E part of the Geita Greenstone Belt, NW Tanzania. The deposits are hosted in Archaean volcanoclastic sediment and intrusive diorite. The geological evolution of the deposits involved three separate stages: (1) an early stage of syn-sedimentary extensional deformation (D1) around 2715 Ma; (2) a second stage involving overprinting ductile folding (D2–4) and shearing (D5–6) events during N-S compression between 2700 and 2665 Ma, coeval with the emplacement of the Kukuluma Intrusive Complex; and (3) a final stage of extensional deformation (D7) accommodated by minor, broadly east-trending normal faults, preceded by the intrusion of felsic porphyritic dykes at ~2650 Ma. The geometry of the ore bodies at Kukuluma and Matandani is controlled by the distribution of magnetite-rich meta-ironstone, near the margins of monzonite-diorite bodies of the Kukuluma Intrusive Complex. The lithological contacts acted as redox boundaries, where high-grade mineralization was enhanced in damage zones with higher permeability, including syn-D3 hydrothermal breccia, D2–D3 fold hinges, and D6 shears. The actual mineralizing event was syn-D7, and occurred in an extensional setting that facilitated the infiltration of mineralizing fluids. Thus, whilst gold mineralization is late-tectonic, ore zone geometries are linked to older structures and lithological boundaries that formed before gold was introduced. The deformation-intrusive history of the Kukuluma and Matandani deposits is near identical to the geological history of the world-class Nyankanga and Geita Hill deposits in the central part of the Geita Greenstone Belt. This similarity suggests that the geological history of much of the greenstone belt is similar. All major gold deposits in the Geita Greenstone Belt lack close proximity to crustal-scale shear zones; they are associated with intrusive complexes and volcanics that formed in an oceanic plateau rather than subduction setting, and formed late-tectonically during an extensional phase.
