The half-normal distribution is composited with the Pareto model to obtain a uni-parametric distribution with a heavy right tail, called the composite half-normal-Pareto distribution. This new distribution is useful for modeling positive data with atypical observations. We study the properties and the behavior of the right tail of this new distribution. We estimate the parameter using a method based on percentiles and the maximum likelihood method and assess the performance of the maximum likelihood estimator using Monte Carlo. We report three applications, one with simulated data and the others with income and expenditure data, in which the new distribution presents better performance than the Pareto distribution. This paper presents the Slash-Exponential-Fréchet distribution, which is an expanded version of the Fréchet distribution. Through its stochastic representation, probability distribution function, moments and other relevant features are obtained. Evidence supports that the updated model displays a lighter right tail than the Fréchet model and is more flexible as for skewness and kurtosis. Results on maximum likelihood estimators are given. A novel cure rate model is introduced by considering, for the number of concurrent causes, the modified power series distribution and, for the time to event, the recently proposed power piecewise exponential distribution. This model includes a wide variety of cure rate models, such as binomial, Poisson, negative binomial, Haight, Borel, logarithmic, and restricted generalized Poisson. Some characteristics of the model are examined, and the estimation of parameters is performed using the Expectation–Maximization algorithm. A simulation study is presented to evaluate the performance of the estimators in finite samples. Finally, an application in a real medical dataset from a population-based study of incident cases of lobular carcinoma diagnosed in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, illustrates the advantages of the proposed model compared to other common cure rate models in the literature, particularly regarding the underestimation of the cure rate in other proposals and the improved precision in estimating the cure rate of our proposal. This article presents an extended distribution that builds upon the exponential distribution. This extension is based on a scale mixture between the exponential and beta distributions. By utilizing this approach, we obtain a distribution that offers increased flexibility in terms of the kurtosis coefficient. We explore the general density, properties, moments, asymmetry, and kurtosis coefficients of this distribution. Statistical inference is performed using both the moments and maximum likelihood methods. To show the performance of this new model, it is applied to a real dataset with atypical observations. In this article, we introduce a new continuous distribution based on the unit interval. This distribution is generated from a transformation of a random variable with half-normal distribution. We study its basic properties, percentiles, moments and order statistics. Maximum likelihood estimation is applied, and we present a simulation study to observe the behavior of the maximum likelihood estimators. In this article we introduce an extension of the Akash distribution. We use the slash methodology to make the kurtosis of the Akash distribution more flexible. We study the general probability density function of this new model, some properties, moments, skewness and kurtosis coefficients. Statistical inference is performed using the methods of moments and maximum likelihood via the EM algorithm. A simulation study is carried out to observe the behavior of the maximum likelihood estimator. In this paper, we extend the Lomax–Rayleigh distribution to increase its kurtosis. The construction of this distribution is based on the idea of the Slash distribution, that is, its representation is based on the quotient of two independent random variables, one being a random variable with a Lomax–Rayleigh distribution and the other a beta (q , 1) . Based on the representation of this family, we study its basic properties, such as moments, coefficients of skewness, and kurtosis. In this paper, a new family of continuous distributions with positive support is introduced. This family is generated by a truncation of the family of univariate symmetrical distributions. In this new family of distributions, general properties, such as moments, asymmetry and kurtosis coefficients, are derived. Particular cases of interest based on the normal, logistic, Laplace and Cauchy models are discussed in depth. The estimation of parameters is carried out by applying moments and maximum likelihood methods. Also, a simulation study was conducted to illustrate the good performance of estimators. An application to the Survival Times (in days) of Guinea Pigs dataset is included, where the special cases of distributions in this family are fitted. The slash-weighted Lindley model is introduced due to the need to obtain a model with more kurtosis than the weighted Lindley distribution. Several expressions for the pdf of this model are given. Its cumulative distribution function is expressed in terms of a generalized hypergeometric function and the incomplete gamma function. Moments and maximum likelihood estimation were studied. In this paper, likelihood-based inference and bias correction based on Firth's approach are developed in the modified skew-t-normal (MStN) distribution. The latter model exhibits a greater flexibility than the modified skew-normal (MSN) distribution since it is able to model heavily skewed data and thick tails. In addition, the tails are controlled by the shape parameter and the degrees of freedom. We provide the density of this new distribution and present some of its more important properties including a general expression for the moments. The Fisher's information matrix together with the observed matrix associated with the log-likelihood are also given. Furthermore, the non-singularity of the Fisher's information matrix for the MStN model is demonstrated when the shape parameter is zero. As the MStN model presents an inferential problem in the shape parameter, Firth's method for bias reduction was applied for the scalar case and for the location and scale case. This paper presents a new distribution, the product of the mixture between Maxwell-Boltzmann and a particular case of the generalized gamma distributions. The resulting distribution, called the Scale Mixture Maxwell-Boltzmann, presents greater kurtosis than the recently introduced slash Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. We obtained closed-form expressions for its probability density and cumulative distribution functions. We studied some of its properties and moments, as well as its skewness and kurtosis coefficients. Parameters were estimated by the moments and maximum likelihood methods, via the Expectation-Maximization algorithm for the latter case. A simulation study was performed to illustrate the parameter recovery. This article introduces a bimodal model based on the epsilon-skew-normal distribution. This extension generates bimodal distributions similar to those produced by the mixture of normal distributions. We study the basic properties of this new family. We apply maximum likelihood estimators, calculate the information matrix and present a simulation study to assess parameter recovery. In this study, we consider an alternative to the log-skew-normal distribution. It is called the modified log-skew-normal distribution and introduces greater flexibility in the skewness and kurtosis parameters. We first study several of the main probabilistic properties of the new distribution, such as the computation of its moments and the non-existence of the moment-generating function. Parameter estimation by the maximum likelihood approach is also studied. This approach presents an overestimation problem in the shape parameter, which in some cases, can even be infinite. However, as we demonstrate, this problem is solved by adapting bias reduction using Firth's approach. We also show that the modified log-skew-normal model likewise inherits the non-singularity of the Fisher information matrix of the untransformed model, when the shape parameter is null. A new class of densities for modelling non-negative data, which is based on the skew-symmetric family of distributions proposed by Azzalini is introduced.We focus on the model generated by the skew-normal distribution, called Extended Half Skew-Normal distribution. We focus on a variety of bivariate models with proportional hazard components. Models with proportional hazard marginals are described together with a selection of models with proportional hazard conditional distributions. The bivariate distributions with marginal proportional hazards distributions are shown to be closely related to certain known bivariate exponential models. Two distinct kinds of conditional specification are investigated. Discussion is provided of cases with hazard function components that are (1) completely unknown, (2) known to belong to given parametric families and (3) completely known. Since the models are designed for use with survival data, it is inevitable that the marginal and conditional distributions will be asymmetric. In this paper, we introduce bimodal extensions, one symmetric and one asymmetric, of the logistic distribution. We define this new density and study some basic properties. We draw inferences from the moment estimator and maximum likelihood approaches. We present a simulation study to assess the behaviour of the moment and maximum likelihood estimators. We also study the singularity of the Fisher information matrix for particular cases. We offer applications in real data and compare them with a mixture of logistics distributions. In this paper, an extension of the power half-normal (PHN) distribution is introduced. This new model is built on the application of slash methodology for positive random variables. The result is a distribution with greater kurtosis than the PHN; i.e., its right tail is heavier than the PHN distribution. Its probability density, survival and hazard rate function are studied, and moments, skewness and kurtosis coefficientes are obtained, along with relevant properties of interest in reliability. It is also proven that the new model can be expressed as the scale mixture of a PHN and a uniform distribution. Moreover, the new model holds the PHN distribution as a limit case when the new parameter tends to infinity. The parameters in the model are estimated by the method of moments and maximum likelihood. A simulation study is given to illustrate the good behavior of maximum likelihood estimators. The classical logit and probit models allow to explain a dichotomous dependent variable as a function of factors or covariates which can influence the response variable. This paper introduces a new skew-logit link for item response theory by considering the arctan transformation over the scobit logit model, yielding a very flexible link function from a new class of generalized distribution. This approach assumes an asymmetric model, which reduces to the standard logit model for a special case of the parameters that control the distribution's symmetry. The model proposed is simple and allows us to estimate the parameters without using Bayesian methods, which requires implementing Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods. Furthermore, no special function appears in the formulation of the model. We compared the proposed model with the classical logit specification using three datasets. The first one deals with the well-known data collection widely studied in the statistical literature, concerning with mortality of adult beetle after exposure to gaseous carbon disulphide, the second one considers an automobile insurance portfolio. Finally, the third dataset examines touristic data related to tourist expenditure. For these examples, the results illustrate that the new model changes the significance level of some explanatory variables and the marginal effects. In this paper, the Extended Half-Power Exponential (EHPE) distribution is built on the basis of the Power Exponential model. The properties of the EHPE model are discussed: the cumulative distribution function, the hazard function, moments, and the skewness and kurtosis coefficients. Estimation is carried out by applying maximum likelihood (ML) methods. A Monte Carlo simulation study is carried out to assess the performance of ML estimates. In this article, we introduce a new family of symmetric-asymmetric distributions based on skew distributions and on the family of order statistics with proportional hazards. This new family of distributions is able to fit both unimodal and bimodal asymmetric data. Furthermore, it contains, as special cases, the symmetric distribution and the "skew-symmetric" family, and therefore the skew-normal distribution. Another interesting feature of the family is that the parameter controlling the distributional shape in bimodal cases takes values in the interval (0, 1); this is an advantage for computing maximum likelihood estimates of model parameters, which is performed by numerical methods. The main object of this paper is to propose a new asymmetric model more flexible than the generalized Gaussian model. In this paper, a modified exponentiated family of distributions is introduced. The new model was built from a continuous parent cumulative distribution function and depends on a shape parameter. Its most relevant characteristics have been obtained: the probability density function, quantile function, moments, stochastic ordering, Poisson mixture with our proposal as the mixing distribution, order statistics, tail behavior and estimates of parameters. We highlight the particular model based on the classical exponential distribution, which is an alternative to the exponentiated exponential, gamma and Weibull. In the paper, we present an extension of the truncated-exponential skew-normal (TESN) distribution. This distribution is defined as the quotient of two independent random variables whose distributions are the TESN distribution and the beta distribution with shape parameters q and 1, respectively. The resulting distribution has a more flexible coefficient of kurtosis. We studied the general probability density function (pdf) of this distribution, its survival and hazard functions, some of its properties, moments and inference by the maximum likelihood method. A cure rate model under the competing risks setup is proposed. For the number of competing causes related to the occurrence of the event of interest, we posit the one-parameter Bell distribution, which accommodates overdispersed counts. The model is parameterized in the cure rate, which is linked to covariates. Parameter estimation is based on the maximum likelihood method. Estimates are computed via the EM algorithm. In order to compare different models, a selection criterion for non-nested models is implemented. Results from simulation studies indicate that the estimation method and the model selection criterion have a good performance. In this paper, the inverse gamma power series (IGPS) class of distributions asymmetric is introduced. This family is obtained by compounding inverse gamma and power series distributions. We present the density, survival and hazard functions, moments and the order statistics of the IGPS. Estimation is first discussed by means of the quantile method. Then, an EM algorithm is implemented to compute the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters. Moreover, a simulation study is carried out to examine the effectiveness of these estimates. Specifying a proper statistical model to represent asymmetric lifetime data with high kurtosis is an open problem. In this paper, the three-parameter, modified, slashed, generalized Rayleigh family of distributions is proposed. Its structural properties are studied: stochastic representation, probability density function, hazard rate function, moments and estimation of parameters via maximum likelihood methods. As merits of our proposal, we highlight as particular cases a plethora of lifetime models, such as Rayleigh, Maxwell, half-normal and chi-square, among others, which are able to accommodate heavy tails. The beta and Kumaraswamy distributions are two of the most widely used distributions for modeling bounded data. When the histogram of a certain dataset exhibits increasing or decreasing behavior, one-parameter distributions such as the power, Marshall–Olkin extended uniform and skew-uniform distributions become viable alternatives. In this article, we propose a new one-parameter distribution for modeling bounded data, the Lambert-uniform distribution. The proposal can be considered as a natural alternative to well known one-parameter distributions in the statistical literature and, in certain scenarios, a viable alternative even for the two-parameter beta and Kumaraswamy distributions. We show that the density function of the proposal tends to positive finite values at the ends of the support, a behavior that favors good performance in certain scenarios. The raw moments are derived from the moment-generating function and used to describe the skewness and kurtosis behavior. The quantile function is expressed in closed form in terms of the Lambert W function, which allows reparameterizing the distribution such that the involved parameter represents the qth quantile. Thus, for the analysis of a bounded range variable, for which a set of covariates is available, we propose a regression model that relates the qth quantile of the response to a linear predictor through a link function. The parameter estimation is carried out using the maximum likelihood method and the behavior of the estimators is evaluated through simulation experiments. Rieck and Nedelman (1991) introduced the sinh-normal distribution. This model was built as a transformation of a N(0,1) distribution. In this paper, a generalization based on a flexible skew normal distribution is introduced. In this way, a more general model is obtained that can describe a range of asymmetric, unimodal and bimodal situations. The paper is divided into two parts. First, the properties of this new model, called flexible sinh-normal distribution, are obtained. In the second part, the flexible sinh-normal distribution is related to flexible Birnbaum–Saunders, introduced by Martínez-Flórez et al. (2019), to propose a log-linear model for lifetime data. We introduce a new class of distributions called the epsilon–positive family, which can be viewed as generalization of the distributions with positive support. The construction of the epsilon–positive family is motivated by the ideas behind the generation of skew distributions using symmetric kernels. This new class of distributions has as special cases the exponential, Weibull, log–normal, log–logistic and gamma distributions, and it provides an alternative for analyzing reliability and survival data. An interesting feature of the epsilon–positive family is that it can viewed as a finite scale mixture of positive distributions, facilitating the derivation and implementation of EM–type algorithms to obtain maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) with (un)censored data. We illustrate the flexibility of this family to analyze censored and uncensored data using two real examples. One of them was previously discussed in the literature; the second one consists of a new application to model recidivism data of a group of inmates released from the Chilean prisons during 2007. As an alternative to available bivariate Birnbaum–Saunders (BS) models, a conditionally specified distribution with BS conditionals is considered. The behavior of conditional or pseudo-likelihood parameter estimates of the model parameters is investigated via simulation. A comparison using a mineralogy data set suggests that the conditionally specified model outperforms competing models (with BS marginals). An analogous comparison using a well-known data set of Australian athletes also suggests the superiority of the conditionally specified model. There are some generalizations of the classical exponential distribution in the statistical literature that have proven to be helpful in numerous scenarios. Some of these distributions are the families of distributions that were proposed by Marshall and Olkin and Gupta. The disadvantage of these models is the impossibility of fitting data of a bimodal nature of incorporating covariates in the model in a simple way. Some empirical datasets with positive support, such as losses in insurance portfolios, show an excess of zero values and bimodality. For these cases, classical distributions, such as exponential, gamma, Weibull, or inverse Gaussian, to name a few, are unable to explain data of this nature. This paper attempts to fill this gap in the literature by introducing a family of distributions that can be unimodal or bimodal and nests the exponential distribution. Some of its more relevant properties, including moments, kurtosis, Fisher's asymmetric coefficient, and several estimation methods, are illustrated. Different results that are related to finance and insurance, such as hazard rate function, limited expected value, and the integrated tail distribution, among other measures, are derived. Because of the simplicity of the mean of this distribution, a regression model is also derived. The generalized bimodal distribution is especially efficient in modeling univariate data exhibiting symmetry and bimodality. However, its performance is poor when the data show important levels of skewness. This article introduces a new unimodal/bimodal distribution capable of modeling different skewness levels. The proposal arises from the recently introduced Lambert transformation when considering a generalized bimodal baseline distribution. The bimodal-normal and generalized bimodal distributions can be derived as special cases of the new distribution. We introduce two families of continuous distribution functions with not-necessarily symmetric densities, which contain a parent distribution as a special case. The two families proposed depend on two parameters and are presented as an alternative to the skew normal distribution and other proposals in the statistical literature. The density functions of these new families are given by a closed expression which allows us to easily compute probabilities, moments and related quantities. The second family can exhibit bimodality and its standardized fourth central moment (kurtosis) can be lower than that of the Azzalini skew normal distribution. Since the second proposed family can be bimodal we fit two well-known data set with this feature as applications. We concentrate attention on the case in which the normal distribution is the parent distribution but some consideration is given to other parent distributions, such as the logistic distribution. In this paper, we reparameterized the extended exponential model based on the mean in order to include covariates and facilitate the interpretation of the coefficients. The model is compared with common models defined in the positive line also reparametrized in the mean. Parameter estimation is approached based on the expectation–maximization algorithm. In this paper, we introduce a novel parametric quantile regression model for asymmetric response variables, where the response variable follows a power skew-normal distribution. By considering a new convenient parametrization, these distribution results are very useful for modeling different quantiles of a response variable on the real line. The maximum likelihood method is employed to estimate the model parameters. Besides, we present a local influence study under different perturbation settings. In this paper, the scale mixture of Rayleigh (SMR) distribution is introduced. It is proven that this new model, initially defined as the quotient of two independent random variables, can be expressed as a scale mixture of a Rayleigh and a particular Generalized Gamma distribution. Closed expressions are obtained for its pdf, cdf, moments, asymmetry and kurtosis coefficients. Its lifetime analysis, properties and Rényi entropy are studied. Inference based on moments and maximum likelihood (ML) is proposed. An Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is implemented to estimate the parameters via ML. This algorithm is also used in a simulation study, which illustrates the good performance of our proposal. This article introduces an extension of the Power Muth (PM) distribution for modeling positive data sets with a high coefficient of kurtosis. The resulting distribution has greater kurtosis than the PM distribution. We show that the density can be represented based on the incomplete generalized integro-exponential function. In this article, we introduce a new probability distribution generator called the Lambert-F generator. For any continuous baseline distribution F, with positive support, the corresponding Lambert-F version is generated by using the new generator. The result is a new class of distributions with one extra parameter that generalizes the baseline distribution and whose quantile function can be expressed in closed form in terms of the Lambert W function. The hazard rate function of a Lambert-F distribution corresponds to a modification of the baseline hazard rate function, greatly increasing or decreasing the baseline hazard rate for earlier times. Herein, we study the main structural properties of the new class of distributions. Special attention is given to two particular cases that can be understood as two-parameter extensions of the well-known exponential and Rayleigh distributions. We discuss parameter estimation for the proposed models considering the moments and maximum likelihood methods. In this article, we introduce a power-skew-elliptical (PSE) distribution in the bivariate setting. The new bivariate model arises in the context of conditionally specified distributions. The proposed bivariate model is an absolutely continuous distribution whose marginals are univariate PSE distributions. The special case of the bivariate power-skew-normal (BPSN) distribution is studied in details. General properties of the BPSN distribution are derived and the estimation of the unknown parameters by maximum pseudo-likelihood is discussed. Further, a sandwich type matrix, which is a consistent estimator for the asymptotic covariance matrix of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator is determined. In this paper we introduce a distribution which is an extension of the power Maxwell distribution. This new distribution is constructed based on the quotient of two independent random variables, the distributions of which are the power Maxwell distribution and a function of the uniform distribution (0,1) respectively. Thus the result is a distribution with greater kurtosis than the power Maxwell. We study the general density of this distribution, and some properties, moments, asymmetry and kurtosis coefficients. Maximum likelihood and moments estimators are studied. We also develop the expectation–maximization algorithm to make a simulation study and present two applications to real data.
