In our studies, we combined two powdered materials, i.e., ferroelectric triglycine sulfate (TGS) and ferrimagnetic magnetite Fe3O4, to obtain a magnetoelectric composite. The ferroelectric (E) part, i.e., TGS, was a hybrid organic–inorganic crystal, which we obtained as a pure single crystal from an aqueous solution using a static water evaporation method. The magnetic (M) part of the composite was commercially available magnetite. The samples used for the dielectric and magnetoelectric measurements were cold-pressed and made in the form of a circular tablet. The measuring electrodes were made of silver-based conductive paste and were attached to the sample. We measured the temperature dependencies of selected electrical parameters (e.g., dielectric permittivity, electrical capacity, and loss angle tangent). We used the dynamic lock-in method to check whether magnetoelectric coupling existed between the E and M phases. In this paper, we present the dielectric properties of pure monocrystalline TGS as a reference sample and compare the results for TGS powder, TGS + carbon powder, and TGS + Fe3O4 powder. The magnetoelectric coupling presumably appeared for the composite TGS + 10 wt. % Fe3O4, as evidenced by the shift in the phase transition temperature in the TGS. Fe1.1Mn1.9O4 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using a combustion method. The influence of the heating temperature on the evolution of the structural and magnetic properties has been studied using various methods. The structural analysis results revealed that as-synthesized nanoparticles have a tetragonal structure with an average size of ~24 nm. The magnetic measurements of the sample showed its ferrimagnetic nature at room temperature with hysteresis at low fields. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements allowed for the conclusion that the Curie temperature for Fe1.1Mn1.9O4 nanoparticles was ~465 °C. After high-temperature magnetic measurements, during which the samples were heated to various maximum heating temperatures (Tmax.heat.) in the range from 500 to 900 °C, it was found that the structure of the samples after cooling to room temperature depended on the heating temperature. Herewith, when the heating temperature was 600 < Tmax.heat. < 700 °C, an irreversible structural phase transition occurred, and the cooled samples retained a high-temperature cubic structure. Band structure and topology of magneto-spin–orbit graphene is investigated using the proposed tight-binding model that incorporates both Rashba and sublattice-resolved collinear exchange couplings in a generic ferrimagnetic (FIM) setting for in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization directions. The resulting band structures were analyzed for possibilities to extract the strengths of exchange and Rashba couplings from experimental spin-resolved ARPES measurements of the valley gaps and π -state spin-splittings. It was shown that the topologically trivial in-plane FIM situation admits simple expressions for these quantities, whereas the out-of-plane FIM, which admits a nontrivial band topology, is harder to analyze. The obtained topological phase diagrams for the out-of-plane FIM case show that the anomalous Hall conductance is quite stable with respect to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction, which tends to interfere with the QAHE phase; moreover, the topological phase transition has a rather smooth character with respect to the AFM coupling strength. Lately, the development of green chemistry methods with high efficiency for metal nanoparticle synthesis has become a primary focus among researchers. The main goal is to find an eco-friendly technique for the production of nanoparticles. Ferro- and ferrimagnetic materials such as magnetite (Fe3O4) exhibit superparamagnetic behavior at a nanometric scale. Magnetic nanoparticles have been gaining increasing interest in nanoscience and nanotechnology. This interest is attributed to their physicochemical properties, particle size, and low toxicity. The present work aims to synthesize magnetite nanoparticles in a single step using extracts of green lemon Citrus Aurantifolia residues. The results produced nanoparticles of smaller size using a method that is friendlier to health and the environment, is more profitable, and can be applied in anticorrosive coatings. The green synthesis was carried out by a co-precipitation method under variable temperature conditions. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) characterization showed that magnetite nanoparticles were successfully obtained with a very narrow particle size distribution between 3 and 10 nm. A composite was produced with the nanoparticles and graphene to be used as a surface coating on steel. In addition, the coating's anticorrosive behavior was evaluated through electrochemical techniques. The surface coating obtained showed good anticorrosive properties and resistance to abrasion. Perovskite-type ABO3 oxides show a number of cation-ordered structures, which have significant effects on their properties. The rock-salt-type order is dominant for B cations, and the layered order for A cations. In this work, we prepared a new perovskite-type oxide, Sm2CuMn(MnTi3)O12, with a rare columnar A-site order using a high-pressure, high-temperature method at about 6 GPa and about 1700 K. Its crystal structure was studied with synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in space group P42/nmc (No. 137) at room temperature with a = 7.53477 Å and c = 7.69788 Å. The magnetic properties of the compound were studied with dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements and specific heat. Spin-glass (SG) magnetic properties were found with TSG = 7 K, while specific heat, in the form of Cp/T, showed a strong, very broad anomaly developing below 20 K and peaking at 4 K. The dielectric constant of Sm2CuMn(MnTi3)O12 was nearly frequency and temperature independent between 8 K and 200 K, with a value of about 50. Cu2+ doping drastically modified the magnetic and dielectric properties of Sm2CuMn(MnTi3)O12 in comparison with the parent compound Sm2MnMn(MnTi3)O12, which showed a long-range ferrimagnetic order at 34–40 K. The antisite disorder of Cu2+ and Mn2+ cations between square-planar and octahedral sites was responsible for the SG magnetic properties of Sm2CuMn(MnTi3)O12. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fluorescence detection is currently one of the commonly used techniques worldwide. Through this work, the preparation and optical properties of an interesting composite material are discussed. It is shown that encapsulating cobalt spinel ferrite (CoFe2O4), obtained by the sol-gel autocombustion method, into poly[diphenyl-co-methyl(H)]silane matrix leads to fluoromagnetic particles (PSCo) with intriguing optical properties. Transmission electron microscopy, combined with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, showed 500 nm large spherical structures containing a core (around 400 nm in diameter) composed of magnetic ferrite particles, surrounded by a thin layer of semiconductive fluorescent polymer. The as-obtained material exhibited ferrimagnetic properties. The FTIR spectrum confirmed that the Si-H functionality of the polysilane was preserved. UV spectroscopy combined with molecular modeling studies indicated that the magnetic core had a strong influence on the intramolecular electron transitions characteristic of the σ-conjugated polysilane. Further analysis by steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that the internal magnetic field strongly enhances the polysilane emission. A ternary nanocomposite made of nanomaghemite, nanoanatase, and graphene oxide has been successfully synthesized using an inorganic coprecipitation approach, and it has been systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and different spectrocopic techniques (electron energy loss, µ-Raman, and 57Fe Mössbauer) after interaction with an effluent containing Daphnia magna individuals. Specifically, the influence of the nanocomposite over the Daphnia magna carapace, administered in two doses (0.5 mg mL−1 and 1 mg mL−1), has been characterized using µ-Raman spectroscopy before and after laser burning protocols, producing information about the physicochemical interaction with the biomarker. The thermal stability of the nanocomposite was found to be equal to 500 °C, where the nanoanatase and the nanomaghemite phases have respectively conserved their structural identities. The magnetic properties of the nanomaghemite have also been kept unchanged even after the high-temperature experiments and exposure to Daphnia magna. In particular, the size, texture, and structural and morphological properties of the ternary nanocomposite have not shown any significant physicochemical modifications after magnetic decantation recuperation. A significant result is that the graphene oxide reduction was kept even after the ecotoxicological assays. These sets of observations are based on the fact that while the UV-Vis spectrum has confirmed the graphene oxide reduction with a localized peak at 260 nm, the 300-K and 15-K 57Fe Mössbauer spectra have only revealed the presence of stoichiometric maghemite, i.e., the two well-defined static magnetic sextets often found in the bulk ferrimagnetic counterpart phase. The Mössbauer results have also agreed with the trivalent-like valence state of Fe ions, as also suggested by electron energy loss spectroscopy data. Thus, the ternary nanocomposite does not substantially affect the Daphnia magna, and it can be easily recovered using an ordinary magnetic decantation protocol due to the ferrimagnetic-like character of the nanomaghemite phase. Consequently, it shows remarkable physicochemical properties for further reuse, such as cleaning by polluted effluents, at least where Daphnia magna species are present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large magnetic field-induced strains can be achieved in modulated martensite for Ni-Mn-In alloys; however, the metastability of the modulated martensite imposes serious constraints on the ability of these alloys to serve as promising sensor and actuator materials. The phase stability, magnetic properties, and electronic structure of the modulated martensite in the Ni2Mn1.5In0.5 alloy are systematically investigated. Results show that the 6M and 5M martensites are metastable and will eventually transform to the NM martensite with the lowest total energy in the Ni2Mn1.5In0.5 alloy. The physical properties of the incommensurate 7M modulated martensite (7M–IC) and nanotwinned 7M martensite ( 7 M − (5 2 ¯) 2 ) are also calculated. The austenite (A) and 7 M − (5 2 ¯) 2 phases are ferromagnetic (FM), whereas the 5M, 6M, and NM martensites are ferrimagnetic (FIM), and the FM coexists with the FIM state in the 7M–IC martensite. The calculated electronic structure demonstrates that the splitting of Jahn–Teller effect and the strong Ni–Mn bonding interaction lead to the enhancement of structural stability. Z-type hexagonal ferrites have recently received attention for their room-temperature magnetoelectric (ME), which is activated when the temperature at which the transverse-conical spin-state transitions to a ferrimagnetic state is increased. The changes in the magnetic domain structure at the transition have been well-documented; however, they are still not understood in detail. In the present study, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis combined with an in situ heating experiment was conducted to demonstrate the shift in magnetic domain structure during the transition from the transverse-conical spin arrangement to a ferrimagnetic spin order. The dynamics of the magnetic domain structure changes with the increasing temperature were acquired in real-time. At 490 K, the magnetization transition from the transverse-conical spin state to the ferromagnetic state was demonstrated. Cross-tie domain walls formed during the magnetic transition process. The increased effect of the demagnetizing field applied to the 180° magnetic domains was caused by a lower magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) at the easy axis of magnetization. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and hydrogen permeation behavior of hot rolled enamel steel were investigated. Three coiling temperatures were adopted to gain different sizes of ferrite grain and TiC precipitates. The results show that a large number of interphase precipitates of nano-sized TiC can be obtained at coiling temperatures of 650 and 700 °C, while a few precipitates are found in experimental steel when coiling temperature is 600 °C. The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decrease with increasing coiling temperature, while elongation increases. The experimental steel has the best resistance to fish-scaling at coiling temperature of 700 °C, due to the large quantities of nano-sized interphase precipitates of TiC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) ferrimagnets consisting of 30-nm-thick D022-MnGa and Co2MnSi (CMS) cubic Heusler alloys with different thicknesses of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 nm, buffered and capped with a Cr film, are successfully grown epitaxially on MgO substrate. Two series samples with and without post annealing at 400 °C are fabricated. The (002) peak of the cubic L21 structure of CMS films on the MnGa layer is observed, even for the 3-nm-thick CMS film for both un-annealed and annealed samples. The smaller remnant magnetization and larger switching field values of CMS (1-20 nm)/MnGa (30 nm) bilayers compared with 30-nm-thick MnGa indicates antiferromagnetic (AFM) interfacial exchange coupling (Jex) between MnGa and CMS films for both un-annealed and annealed samples. The critical thickness of the CMS film for observing PMA with AFM coupling in the CMS/MnGa bilayer is less than 10 nm, which is relatively large compared to previous studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this investigation was the development of a new colloidal route for the fabrication of Mn3O4 electrodes for supercapacitors with enhanced charge storage performance. Mn3O4-carbon nanotube electrodes were fabricated with record-high capacitances of 6.67 F cm−2 obtained from cyclic voltammetry tests at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1 and 7.55 F cm−2 obtained from the galvanostatic charge–discharge tests at a current density of 3 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte in a potential window of 0.9 V. The approach involves the use of murexide as a capping agent for the synthesis of Mn3O4 and a co-dispersant for Mn3O4 and carbon nanotubes. Good electrochemical performance of the electrode material was achieved at a high active mass loading of 40 mg cm−2 and was linked to a reduced agglomeration of Mn3O4 nanoparticles and efficient co-dispersion of Mn3O4 with carbon nanotubes. The mechanisms of murexide adsorption on Mn3O4 and carbon nanotube are discussed. With the proposed method, the time-consuming electrode activation procedure for Mn3O4 electrodes can be avoided. The approach developed in this investigation paves the way for the fabrication of advanced cathodes for asymmetric supercapacitors and multifunctional devices, combining capacitive, magnetic, and other functional properties. This paper describes the preparation and obtained magnetic properties of large single domain iron oxide nanoparticles. Such ferrimagnetic particles are particularly interesting for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in medicine or (bio)technology. The particles were prepared by a modified oxidation method of non-magnetic precursors following the green rust synthesis and characterized regarding their structural and magnetic properties. For increasing preparation temperatures (5 to 85 °C), an increasing particle size in the range of 30 to 60 nm is observed. Magnetic measurements confirm a single domain ferrimagnetic behavior with a mean saturation magnetization of ca. 90 Am2/kg and a size-dependent coercivity in the range of 6 to 15 kA/m. The samples show a specific absorption rate (SAR) of up to 600 W/g, which is promising for magnetic hyperthermia application. For particle preparation temperatures above 45 °C, a non-magnetic impurity phase occurs besides the magnetic iron oxides that results in a reduced net saturation magnetization. As a typical refractory iron ore, the utilization of limonite ore with conventional mineral processing methods has great limitations. In this study, suspension magnetization roasting technology was developed and utilized to recover limonite ore. The influences of roasting temperature, roasting time, and reducing gas concentration on the magnetization roasting process were investigated. The optimal roasting conditions were determined to be a roasting temperature of 480 °C, a roasting time of 12.5 min, and a reducing gas concentration of 20%. Under optimal conditions, an iron concentrate grade of 60.12% and iron recovery of 91.96% was obtained. The phase transformation, magnetism variation, and microstructure evolution behavior were systematically analyzed by X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, and scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that hematite and goethite were eventually transformed into magnetite during the magnetization roasting process. Moreover, the magnetism of roasted products significantly improved due to the formation of ferrimagnetic magnetite in magnetization roasting. The physical properties of the cubic and ferrimagnetic spinel ferrite LiFe5O8 has made it an attractive material for electronic and medical applications. In this work, LiFe5O8 nanosized crystallites were synthesized by a novel and eco-friendly sol-gel process, by using powder coconut water as a mediated reaction medium. The dried powders were heat-treated (HT) at temperatures between 400 and 1000 °C, and their structure, morphology, electrical and magnetic characteristics, cytotoxicity, and magnetic hyperthermia assays were performed. The heat treatment of the LiFe5O8 powder tunes the crystallite sizes between 50 nm and 200 nm. When increasing the temperature of the HT, secondary phases start to form. The dielectric analysis revealed, at 300 K and 10 kHz, an increase of ε ′ (≈10 up to ≈14) with a t a n δ almost constant (≈0.3) with the increase of the HT temperature. The cytotoxicity results reveal, for concentrations below 2.5 mg/mL, that all samples have a non-cytotoxicity property. The sample heat-treated at 1000 °C, which revealed hysteresis and magnetic saturation of 73 emu g−1 at 300 K, showed a heating profile adequate for magnetic hyperthermia applications, showing the potential for biomedical applications. Tm-Tb co-substituted Co-Ni nanospinel ferrites (NSFs) as (Co0.5Ni0.5) [TmxTbxFe2−2x]O4 (x = 0.00–0.05) NSFs were attained via the ultrasound irradiation technique. The phase identification and morphologies of the NSFs were explored using X-rays diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and transmission and scanning electronic microscopes (TEM and SEM). The magnetization measurements against the applied magnetic field (M-H) were made at 300 and 10 K with a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The various prepared nanoparticles revealed a ferrimagnetic character at both 300 and 10 K. The saturation magnetization (Ms), the remanence (Mr), and magneton number ( n B ) were found to decrease upon the Tb-Tm substitution effect. On the other hand, the coercivity (Hc) was found to diminish with increasing x up to 0.03 and then begins to increase with further rising Tb-Tm content. The Hc values are in the range of 346.7–441.7 Oe at 300 K to 4044.4–5378.7 Oe at 10 K. The variations in magnetic parameters were described based on redistribution of cations, crystallites and/or grains size, canting effects, surface spins effects, super-exchange interaction strength, etc. The observed magnetic results indicated that the synthesized (Co0.5Ni0.5)[TmxTbxFe2−x]O4 NSFs could be considered as promising candidates to be used for room temperature magnetic applications and magnetic recording media. The paper presents a computational study of the magnetocaloric properties of the V12 polyoxovanadate molecular magnet. The description is restricted to low-temperature range (below approximately 100 K), where the magnetic properties of the system in question can be sufficiently modelled by considering a tetramer that consists of four vanadium ions with spins S = 1 / 2 . The discussion is focused on the magnetocaloric effect in the cryogenic range. The exact and numerical diagonalization of the corresponding Hamiltonian is used in order to construct the thermodynamic description within a version of the canonical ensemble. The thermodynamic quantities of interest, such as magnetic entropy, specific heat, entropy change under isothermal magnetization/demagnetization, temperature change under adiabatic magnetization/demagnetization, refrigerant capacity, and magnetic Grüneisen ratio, are calculated and discussed extensively. The importance of two quantum level crossings for the described properties is emphasized. The significant ranges of direct and inverse magnetocaloric effect are predicted. In the field of engineering, automobile and aerospace components are manufactured based on the desired applications from the metal forming process. For producing better quality of both symmetry and asymmetry mechanical parts, understanding the material deformation and analytical representation of the material ductility behavior for the working material is necessary as the forming procedures carried out mostly in the warm processing conditions. In this work, the hot tensile test flow stress-strain data were utilized to construct the constitutive equation for describing AISI-1045 steel material hot deformation behavior, and the test conditions, such as deformation temperatures and strain rates were 750–950 ° C and 0.05–1.0 s − 1 , respectively. The surface morphology and elemental identification analysis were performed using the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) coupled with the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) mapping setup. In this work, the Arrhenius-type constitutive equation, including the strain compensation, was used to formulate the flow stress prediction model for capturing the material behavior. Besides, the Zener-Hollomon parameter was altered, employing incorporating the effect of strain rate and strain on the flow stress. The empirical model approach was employed to estimate the material model constants from the constitutive equation using the actual test measurements. The population metrics such as coefficient of determination ( R 2 ), sample standard deviation of the error (SSD), standard error of the regression (SER), coefficient of residual variation (CRV), and average absolute relative error (AARE) was employed to confirm the predictability of the proposed models. The computed results are discussed in detail, using numerical and graphical verification's. From the graphical comparison, the flow stress-strain data achieved from the proposed constitutive model are in good agreement with the actual test measurements. The constitutive model prediction accuracy is found to be improved, like the prediction error range from 3.678% to 2.984%. Magnetic nanofibers are of great interest in basic research, as well as for possible applications in spintronics and neuromorphic computing. Here we report on the preparation of magnetic nanofiber mats by electrospinning polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/nanoparticle solutions, creating a network of arbitrarily oriented nanofibers with a high aspect ratio. Since PAN is a typical precursor for carbon, the magnetic nanofiber mats were stabilized and carbonized after electrospinning. The magnetic properties of nanofiber mats containing magnetite or nickel ferrite nanoparticles were found to depend on the nanoparticle diameters and the potential after-treatment, as compared with raw nanofiber mats. Micromagnetic simulations underlined the different properties of both magnetic materials. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images revealed nearly unchanged morphologies after stabilization without mechanical fixation, which is in strong contrast to pure PAN nanofiber mats. While carbonization at 500 °C left the morphology unaltered, as compared with the stabilized samples, stronger connections between adjacent fibers were formed during carbonization at 800 °C, which may be supportive of magnetic data transmission. In this work, a process for the realization of new polymer matrix composites with nanosized barium ferrite (BaFe12O19) as ferrimagnetic filler, acryl butadiene styrene (ABS) as polymer matrix and an extrusion-based method, namely fused filament fabrication (FFF), as 3D printing method will be described comprehensively. The whole process consists of the individual steps material compounding, rheological testing, filament extrusion, 3D-printing via FFF and finally a widespread specimen characterization regarding to appearance, mechanical properties like tensile and bending behavior as well as the aspired magnetic properties. Increasing ferrite amounts up to 40 vol.% (equal 76 wt.%) cause a reduction of the ultimate stress and an increase of the magnetic polarization as well as of the energy product (BH)max in comparison to the pure polymer matrix. Synthetic antiferromagnets (SAF) are widely used for a plethora of applications among which data storage, computing, and in the emerging field of magnonics. In this framework, controlling the magnetic properties of SAFs via localized thermal treatments represents a promising route for building novel magnonic materials. In this paper, we study via vibration sample magnetometry the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties of sputtered exchange bias SAFs grown via magnetron sputtering varying the ferromagnetic layers and spacer thickness. Interestingly, we observe a strong, reversible modulation of the exchange field, saturation field, and coupling strength upon heating up to 250 °C. These results suggest that exchange bias SAFs represent promising systems for developing novel artificial magnetic nanomaterials via localized thermal treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a quantum-mechanical study of thermodynamic, structural, elastic, and magnetic properties of selected antiphase boundaries (APBs) in Fe 3 Al with the D0 3 crystal structure with and without Cr atoms. The computed APBs are sharp (not thermal), and they have {001} crystallographic orientation. They are characterized by a mutual shift of grains by 1/2〈100〉a where a is the lattice parameter of a cube-shaped 16-atom elementary cell of Fe 3 Al, i.e., they affect the next nearest neighbors (APB-NNN type, also called APB-D0 3 ). Regarding clean APBs in Fe 3 Al, the studied ones have only a very minor impact on the structural and magnetic properties, including local magnetic moments, and the APB energy is rather low, about 80 ± 25 mJ/m 2 . Interestingly, they have a rather strong impact on the anisotropic (tensorial) elastic properties with the APB-induced change from a cubic symmetry to a tetragonal one, which is sensitively reflected by the directional dependence of linear compressibility. The Cr atoms have a strong impact on magnetic properties and a complex influence on the energetics of APBs. In particular, the Cr atoms in Fe 3 Al exhibit clustering tendencies even in the presence of APBs and cause a transition from a ferromagnetic (Cr-free Fe 3 Al) into a ferrimagnetic state. The Fe atoms with Cr atoms in their first coordination shell have their local atomic magnetic moments reduced. This reduction is synergically enhanced (to the point when Fe atoms are turned non-magnetic) when the influence of clustering of Cr atoms is combined with APBs, which offer specific atomic environments not existing in the APB-free bulk Fe 3 Al. The impact of Cr atoms on APB energies in Fe 3 Al is found to be ambiguous, including reduction, having a negligible influence or increasing APB energies depending on the local atomic configuration of Cr atoms, as well as their concentration. The magneto–elastic coupling effect correlates to the changes of moment and lattice upon magnetic phase transition. Here, we report that, in the pseudo-binary Laves-phase Tb1-xDyxCo2 system (x = 0.0, 0.7, and 1.0), thermal expansion and magnetostriction can probe the ferrimagnetic transitions from cubic to rhombohedral phase (in TbCo2), from cubic to tetragonal phase (in DyCo2), and from cubic to rhombohedral then to tetragonal phase (in Tb0.3Dy0.7Co2). Furthermore, a Landau polynomial approach is employed to qualitatively investigate the thermal expansion upon the paramagnetic (cubic) to ferrimagnetic (rhombohedral or tetragonal) transition, and the calculated thermal expansion curves agree with the experimental curves. Our work illustrates the correlation between crystal symmetry, magnetostriction, and thermal expansion in ferrimagnetic Laves-phase alloys and provides a new perspective to investigate ferrimagnetic transitions. We report the magnetic and magnetostrictive behaviors of the pseudobinary ferrimagnetic spinel oxide system (1−x)CoFe2O4–xCoAl2O4 [Co(Fe1−xAlx)2O4], with one end-member being the ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4 and the other end-member being CoAl2O4 that is paramagnetic above 9.8 K. The temperature spectra of magnetization and magnetic susceptibility were employed to detect the magnetic transition temperatures and to determine the phase diagram of this system. Composition dependent and temperature dependent magnetostrictive behaviors reveal an exotic phase boundary that separates two ferrimagnetic states: At room temperature and under small magnetic fields (∼500 Oe), Fe-rich compositions exhibit negative magnetostriction while the Al-rich compositions exhibit positive magnetostriction though the values are small (<10 ppm). Moreover, the compositions around this phase boundary at room temperature (x = 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, 0.5) exhibit near-zero magnetostriction and enhanced magnetic susceptibility, which may be promising in the applications for magnetic cores, current sensors, or magnetic shielding materials. Cobalt-chromium ferrite, CoCrxFe2−xO4 (x = 0–1.2), has been synthesized by the sol-gel auto-combustion method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicates that samples calcined at 800 °C for 3 h were a single-cubic phase. The lattice parameter decreased with increasing Cr concentration. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed that the sample powders were nanoparticles. It was confirmed from the room temperature Mössbauer spectra that transition from the ferrimagnetic state to the superparamagnetic state occurred with the doping of chromium. Both the saturation magnetization and the coercivity decreased with the chromium doping. With a higher annealing temperature, the saturation magnetization increased and the coercivity increased initially and then decreased for CoCr0.2Fe1.8O4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
