Hydrogen is a promising zero-carbon fuel, and its application in the micro-combustor can promote carbon reduction. The structural design of micro-combustors is crucial for combustion characteristics and thermal performance improvement. This study investigates the premixed combustion characteristics of hydrogen/air in a micro-cylindrical combustor with double ribs, using an orthogonal design method to assess the impact of various geometric parameters on thermal performance. The results indicate that the impact of rib height, rib position, and inclined angle is greater than rib width and their interactions, while their influence decreases in that order. Increased rib height improves mean wall temperature and exergy efficiency due to an expanded recirculation region and increased flame–wall contact, but negatively affects temperature uniformity and combustion efficiency. Although double ribs enhance performance, placing them too close may reduce heat transfer due to the low-temperature region between the ribs. When the double ribs are positioned at the axial third equinoxes of the micro-combustor, the highest mean wall temperature is achieved. Meanwhile, with a rib height of 0.3 and an inclined angle of 45°, the micro-combustor achieves optimal thermal performance, with the mean wall temperature increasing by 61.32 K. This paper presents an analysis and optimization of a polygeneration power-production system that integrates a concentrating solar tower, a supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle, a double-flash geothermal Rankine cycle, and an internal combustion engine. The concentrating solar tower is analyzed under the weather conditions of the Mexicali Valley, Mexico, optimizing the incident radiation on the receiver and its size, the tower height, and the number of heliostats and their distribution. The integrated polygeneration system is studied by first and second law analyses, and its optimization is also developed. Results show that the optimal parameters for the solar field are a solar flux of 549.2 kW/m2, a height tower of 73.71 m, an external receiver of 1.86 m height with a 6.91 m diameter, and a total of 1116 heliostats of 6 m × 6 m. For the integrated polygeneration system, the optimal values of the variables considered are 1437 kPa and 351.2 kPa for the separation pressures of both flash chambers, 753 °C for the gasification temperature, 741.1 °C for the inlet temperature to the turbine, 2.5 and 1.503 for the turbine pressure ratios, 0.5964 for the air–biomass equivalence ratio, and 0.5881 for the CO2 mass flow splitting fraction. Recent advancements in cryogenic etching, characterized by high aspect ratios and etching rates, address the growing demand for enhanced performance and reduced power consumption in electronics. To precisely maintain the temperature under high loads, the cascade mixed-refrigerant cycle (CMRC) is predominantly used. However, most refrigerants currently used in semiconductor cryogenic etching have high global warming potential (GWP). This study introduces a −100 °C chiller using a mixed refrigerant (MR) with a GWP of 150 or less, aiming to comply with stricter environmental standards and contribute to environmental preservation. The optimal configuration for the CMRC was determined based on a previously established methodology for selecting the best MR configuration. Comprehensive analyses—energy, exergy, environmental, and exergoeconomic—were conducted on the data obtained using Matlab simulations to evaluate the feasibility of replacing conventional refrigerants. The results reveal that using eco-friendly MRs increases the coefficient of performance by 52%, enabling a reduction in compressor size due to significantly decreased discharge volumes. The exergy analysis indicated a 16.41% improvement in efficiency and a substantial decrease in exergy destruction. The environmental analysis demonstrated that eco-friendly MRs could reduce carbon emissions by 60%. Economically, the evaporator and condenser accounted for over 70% of the total exergy costs in all cases, with a 52.44% reduction in exergy costs when using eco-friendly MRs. This study highlights the potential for eco-friendly refrigerants to be integrated into semiconductor cryogenic etching processes, responding effectively to environmental regulations in the cryogenic sector. The accurate optimisation of absorption chillers is often impeded by idealised models that overlook system interactions and machine complexities. This study introduces a validated mathematical description for predicting the primary indicators of non-idealised absorption chillers, accounting for factors such as the electrical work of the Solution Circulation Pump, entropy changes within the refrigerant cycle, and exergy losses. Validation against 13 years of data (2008–2021) from the University of Debrecen's absorption chiller indicated close agreement, with deviations within acceptable limits. The use of a solution heat exchanger shifted cooling indicators towards their minima. Sensitivity analyses indicated that a 2.5% reduction in condenser temperature increased COP by 41.3% and Cooling Exergetic Efficiency by 15.5%, while a 2.5% reduction in the Heat Fraction Factor improved both by 34%. Adjusting absorber temperature and Heat Fraction Factor down by 2.5%, alongside a 2.5% rise in generator temperature, resulted in a 100.8% increase in COP and a 52.8% boost in Cooling Exergetic Efficiency. Relying solely on electrical energy storage for energy regulation makes it difficult to provide a stable and efficient energy supply for microgrid systems currently. Additionally, the economic cost of microgrids and the rate of energy use present a challenge that must be addressed. A strategy for allocating capacity for multi-energy microgrids that takes energy efficiency and hydrogen energy into account is offered as a solution to the aforementioned issues. Initially, the construction of the multi-energy microgrid system takes into account the thermoelectric coupling properties of hydrogen energy devices. Second, the system's energy utilization level is measured using the exergy efficiency analysis. Next, the multi-objective capacity optimization allocation model of the multi-energy microgrid system is established, with the exergy efficiency and system economic cost serving as the objective functions. Lastly, the multi-objective model is solved using the ε -constraint approach to find the Pareto frontier, and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution is employed for decision-making. The example results demonstrate that, when compared to a traditional microgrid using electric energy storage, the proposed model can effectively lower the system's economic cost and improve exergy efficiency. Additionally, multi-objective capacity optimization can be used to strike a balance between exergy efficiency and the system's economic cost. Advanced airborne power generation technology represents one of the most effective solutions for meeting the electricity requirements of hypersonic vehicles during long-endurance flights. This paper proposes a power generation system that integrates a high-temperature fuel cell to tackle the challenges associated with power generation in the hypersonic field, utilizing techniques such as inlet pressurization, autothermal reforming, and anode recirculation. Firstly, the power generation system is modeled modularly. Secondly, the influence of key parameters on the system's performance is analyzed. Thirdly, the performance of the power generation system under the design conditions is simulated and evaluated. Finally, the weight distribution and exergy loss of the system's components under the design conditions are calculated. The results indicate that the system's electrical efficiency increases with fuel utilization, decreases with rising current density and steam-to-carbon ratio (SCR), and initially increases before declining with increasing fuel cell operating temperature. Under the design conditions, the system's power output is 48.08 kW, with an electrical efficiency of 51.77%. The total weight of the power generation system is 77.09 kg, with the fuel cell comprising 69.60% of this weight, resulting in a power density of 0.62 kW/kg. The exergy efficiency of the system is 55.86%, with the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) exhibiting the highest exergy loss, while the mixer demonstrates the greatest exergy efficiency. The cascade refrigeration systems (CRS) used in hypermarkets and supermarkets, which are used by many people, have been employing R744 for the low-temperature cycle (LTC) and R404A for the high-temperature cycle (HTC) due to environmental and public safety issues. However, the use of R404A is limited due to its high GWP, and therefore research on alternative refrigerants is necessary. Nevertheless, there is no detailed study in the literature that compares and analyzes the three refrigerants for practical design by applying R744 for LTC and R404A, R448A, and R449A for HTC in CRS. Therefore, this study aims to provide data for the practical detailed design of an alternative system to R744/R404A CRS. Under standard conditions, we analyzed how the exergy destruction rate (EDR) and exergy efficiency (EE) of the system and the EDR of each component change when the important factors affecting CRS (degree of superheating (DSH), degree of subcooling (DSC), and internal heat exchanger (IHX) efficiency of HTC, DSH of LTC, condensation temperature (CT), evaporation temperature (ET), cascade evaporation temperature (CET), and temperature difference of CHX) are varied over a wide range. The main conclusions are as follows. (1) Under the given constant conditions, the smallest change in system EDR based on R448A is DSH of HTC (decreased by 0.07–0.1 kW), followed by IHX of HTC (decreased by 0.12–0.3 kW), DSH of LTC (increased by 0.19–0.25 kW), DSC of HTC (decreased by 0.59–0.69 kW), temperature difference of CHX (increased by 1.57–1.83 kW), CET (decreased and then increased by 0.67–4.43 kW), CT (increased by 1.49–3.9 kW), ET (decreased by 2.39–4.61 kW). (2) The highest change rate of system EE based on R448A is CET (increased and then decreased by 1.38–8.28%), followed by temperature difference of CHX (decreased by 2.96–3.16%), ET (increased and then decreased by 0.63–2.75%), DSC of HTC (increased by 1.26–1.34%), CT (increased and then decreased by 0.24–1.12%), IHX of HTC (increased by 0.11–1.02%), DSH of LTC (decreased by 0.35–0.49%), and DSH of HTC (increased by 0.14–0.19%). Highly integrated energy systems are on the rise due to increasing global demand. To capture the underlying physics of such interdisciplinary systems, we need a modern framework that unifies all forms of energy. Here, we apply modified Lagrangian mechanics to the description of multi-energy systems. Based on the minimum entropy production principle, we revisit fluid mechanics in the presence of both mechanical and thermal dissipations and propose using exergy flow as the unifying Lagrangian across different forms of energy. We illustrate our theoretical framework by modeling a one-dimensional system with coupled electricity and heat. We map the exergy loss rate in real space and obtain the total exergy changes. Under steady-state conditions, our theory agrees with the traditional formula but incorporates more physical considerations such as viscous dissipation. The integral form of our theory also allows us to go beyond steady-state calculations and visualize the local, time-dependent exergy flow density everywhere in the system. Regenerative design is being increasingly explored in urban environments to counteract and adapt to the changing climate and degradation of ecosystems. A critical success factor for the implementation of regenerative design is the evaluation of urban and building systems in relation to ecological performance and benefits. In biological ecosystems, the availability of high-quality energy, called exergy, and structural order can be used as indicators of the efficiency of on-going ecological processes. Structural order refers to the organization and systematic arrangements of biotic and abiotic elements within an ecosystem based on the available space and interactions with the goal to form a functional system. Ecological processes use the available exergy and generate ecosystem services (ESs) upon which human survival and that of other living organisms depend. In this article, structural order and ESs generation are proposed as indicators for exergy efficiency and accumulation in building systems, respectively, which can evaluate to what extent they are ecologically functional and regenerative. Based on this insight, design strategies are derived from the functioning of ecosystems that describe how buildings could become habitats that host living, non-living, and hybrid systems with optimized thermodynamic efficiency and that can generate ESs. This research suggests that when buildings improve structural order (an ecological concept) and implement ESs generating processes similar to biological ecosystems, they can facilitate regenerative processes more effectively that consume and generate resources and, with this, destroy but also accumulate exergy. Industrial buildings have numerous kinds of energy-losing equipment, such as engines, ovens, boilers and heat exchangers. Energy losses are related to inefficient energy use and lousy work conditions for the people inside the buildings. This work is devoted to the recovery of lost energy from industrial buildings. Firstly, the residual energy of the building is extracted to be used to warm water. Consequently, the work conditions of the people inside industrial buildings can be improved by maintaining the adequate temperature. The recovery of the energy is performed by a multipurpose heat pump system (HP system). The working fluid used in the HP system is R134a, which is a traditional and cheap working fluid. The thermophysical properties of R134a are obtained through the PC-SAFT equation of state. This work presents a performance mapping based on the intercepted areas framework to evaluate which working conditions are the optimal operating variables. The latter depends on several key parameters, such as compressor work, heat delivery, heat absorbed and exergetic efficiency. The results show that the optimal work conditions are found at different condenser and evaporator temperatures, and these may be limited by what the designer considers a sound performance of the heat pump system. Despite being stored at 113 K and at atmospheric pressure, LNG cold potential is not exploited to reduce green ships' energy needs. An innovative system based on three organic Rankine cycles integrated into the regasification equipment is proposed to produce additional power and recover cooling energy from condensers. A first-law analysis identified ethylene and ethane as suitable working fluids for the first and the second ORC, making freshwater and ice available. Propane, ammonia and propylene could be arbitrarily employed in the third ORC for air conditioning. An environmental analysis that combines exergy efficiency, ecological indices and hazard aspects for the marine environment and ship passengers indicated propylene as safer and more environmentally friendly. Exergy analysis confirmed that more than 20% of the LNG potential can be recovered from every cycle to produce a net clean power of 76 kW, whereas 270 kW can be saved by recovering condensers' cooling power to satisfy some ship needs. Assuming the sailing mode, a limitation of 162 kg in LNG consumptions was determined, avoiding the emission of 1584 kg of CO2 per day. In the ongoing debate about the feasibility of enforcing a transition to decentralized energy conversion systems, arguments are often presented that lack scientific rigor. Granted, the issue is multi-faceted and fundamentally multi-disciplinary, and possible solutions strongly depend on the selection of location as well as on local climate and demographics. Furthermore, decentralizing the final energy distribution leads to potential socio-economic considerations that involve value judgements. However, the most serious problem is that media have appropriated the topic and are often publishing opinion papers authored by non-specialists and even by representatives of interest groups. The present paper proposes an approach that is innovative on two counts: first, it treats "final energy" as any other commodity and therefore expands the field of investigation to the problems arising from the decentralization of a generic production line or technological chain; second, it argues that a method solidly rooted in Thermodynamics, the Extended Exergy Accounting, may be used to quantify the total amount of primary exergy resources requested by a decentralized strategy (as opposed to a centralized one), so that a comparison can be performed and discussed on a rational, unbiased and scientific basis. This is an introductory paper that reports some theoretical results of the method: realistic applications are perforce excluded because the idea is that the procedure must be drafted in such a way to be applicable to different socio-economic scenarios and locations and to remain valid under a broad range of boundary conditions. Although the R404A indirect refrigeration system (IRS) with an internal heat exchanger (IHX) and R744 as the secondary fluid has potential applications in supermarkets and hypermarkets, the exergy characteristics of this IRS have not been extensively investigated. In this study, the factors affecting the R744 exergy characteristics (degree of subcooling (DSB) and degree of superheating (DSP) of the R404A cycle, DSP of the R744 cycle, condensation temperature (CT) and cascade evaporation temperature (CET), and IHX efficiency) were experimentally evaluated to obtain basic data for the design of R404A IRS with R744 as the optimal secondary fluid. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) Under given conditions, the smallest change in the system exergy destruction rate (EDR) according to the change in each parameter is the DSP of the R744 cycle (0.3–1%), followed by the DSB of the R404A cycle (6.1–8.8%), the IHX efficiency of the R404A cycle (3.8–14.3%), the DSP of the R404A cycle (11.7–15.9%), the CET (29.4–41.9%), and the CT (35–47%). (2) Also, in terms of the exergy efficiency of system (EES), the largest value was obtained for the DSP of the R404A cycle (2.4–12.7%), followed by the IHX efficiency of the R404A cycle (3–10.2%), the CET (2.2–8.7%), the CT (4–6.9%), the DSB of the R404A cycle (2.7–6.2%), and the DSP of the R744 cycle (0.04–1.2%). (3) In order to lower the system EDR, DSP, DSB, and IHX efficiency of the R404A cycle, the CET must be increased to the maximum, and to lower the DSP of the R744 cycle, the CT must be reduced to the minimum. The incorporation of ejectors into heat pump and refrigeration cycles has been the subject of growing interest, largely due to their simple structure, high reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This paper investigates the recent advancements in novel design concepts of ejector-enhanced vapor compression heat pump and refrigeration cycles. An overview of novel single-stage and two-stage compression cycles utilizing a single or multiple ejectors is provided. First, the system setup, operational principles, description, and figures of the existing schemes are provided. Second, the main results, such as the coefficient of performance (COP), volumetric heating capacity and exergy destruction, are discussed. In conclusion, the paper presents a coherent summary of the current developments, future prospects, and the current knowledge gap. A plethora of research is present in developing theoretical systems with high efficiency. However, experimental tests for real-life implementations are limited. In the endeavor to accomplish a fully de-carbonized globe, sparkling interest is growing towards using natural gas (NG) having as vastly major component methane (CH4). This has the lowest carbon/hydrogen atom ratio compared to other conventional fossil fuels used in engines and power-plants hence mitigating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Given that using neat hydrogen (H2) containing nil carbon still possesses several issues, blending CH4 with H2 constitutes a stepping-stone towards the ultimate goal of zero producing CO2. In this context, the current work investigates the exergy terms development in high-speed spark-ignition engine (SI) fueled with various hydrogen/methane blends from neat CH4 to 50% vol. fraction H2, at equivalence ratios (EQR) from stoichiometric into the lean region. Experimental data available for that engine were used for validation from the first-law (energy) perspective plus emissions and cycle-by-cycle variations (CCV), using in-house, comprehensive, two-zone (unburned and burned), quasi-dimensional turbulent combustion model tracking tightly the flame-front pathway, developed and reported recently by authors. The latter is expanded to comprise exergy terms accompanying the energy outcomes, affording extra valuable information on judicious energy usage. The development in each zone, over the engine cycle, of various exergy terms accounting too for the reactive and diffusion components making up the chemical exergy is calculated and assessed. The correct calculation of species and temperature histories inside the burned zone subsequent to entrainment of fresh mixture from the unburned zone contributes to more exact computation, especially considering the H2 percentage in the fuel blend modifying temperature-levels, which is key factor when the irreversibility is calculated from a balance comprising all rest exergy terms. Illustrative diagrams of the exergy terms in every zone and whole charge reveal the influence of H2 and EQR values on exergy terms, furnishing thorough information. Concerning the joint content of both zones normalized exergy values over the engine cycle, the heat loss transfer exergy curves acquire higher values the higher the H2 or EQR, the work transfer exergy curves acquire slightly higher values the higher the H2 and slightly higher values the lower the EQR, and the irreversibility curves acquire lower values the higher the H2 or EQR. This exergy approach can offer new reflection for the prospective research to advancing engines performance along judicious use of fully friendly ecological fuel as H2. This extended and in-depth exergy analysis on the use of hydrogen in engines has not appeared in the literature. Featured Application: The work in this paper provides some basic theoretical and practical reference value for the energy and exergy analysis, calculation, process optimization, and energy conservation research of the hydrogen-based direct reduction shaft furnace process, which is helpful for promoting its further industrial application. The traditional production mode using coal as the main energy source is not conducive to the sustainable development of the iron and steel industry (ISI). The hydrogen-based direct reduction shaft furnace (HDRSF) process is a feasible technical route for promoting the green development of the ISI. However, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis with respect to the energy utilization and process flow of the HDRSF method. To address these issues, a systemic material–energy–exergy model of HDRSF is established. An improved HDRSF process incorporating waste heat recovery is also proposed, and energy consumption intensity and exergy intensity are used as assessment metrics. This study's findings indicate that the proposed waste heat recovery can considerably lower gas demand and energy consumption intensity, but exergy intensity has little effect. The reducing gas demand drops from 2083 m3 to 1557 m3, the energy consumption intensity drops from 2.75 × 107 kJ to 1.70 × 107 kJ, and the exergy intensity drops from 1.08 × 107 kJ to 1.05 × 107 kJ when the reducing gas temperature is 900 °C, H2:CO = 1:1; meanwhile, the recovery rate of waste heat reaches 40%. As an advanced energy storage technology, the compressed CO2 energy storage system (CCES) has been widely studied for its advantages of high efficiency and low investment cost. However, the current literature has been mainly focused on the TC-CCES and SC-CCES, which operate in high-pressure conditions, increasing investment costs and bringing operation risks. Meanwhile, some studies based on the phase-change CO2 energy storage system also have had the disadvantages of low efficiency and the extra necessity of heat or cooling sources. To overcome the above problems, this paper proposes an innovative compressed CO2 phase-change energy storage system. During the energy charge process, molten salt and water are used to store heat with a smaller temperature difference in heat exchangers, and high-pressure CO2 is reserved in liquid form. During the energy discharge process, throttle expansion is applied to realize the evaporation at room temperature, and CO2 absorbs the reserved heat to improve the power capacity in the turbine and the system energy storage efficiency. The thermodynamic and exergoeconomic studies are performed firstly by using MATLAB. Then, the parametric study based on energy storage efficiency, system unit product cost, and exergy destruction is analyzed. The results show that energy storage efficiency can be improved by lifting liquid CO2 pressure as well as compressor and turbine isentropic efficiencies, and CO2 evaporation pressure has the optimal pressure point. The system unit product cost can be reduced by decreasing liquid CO2 pressure and compressor isentropic efficiency, while CO2 evaporation pressure and turbine isentropic efficiency both have optimal points. Finally, the optimization of two performances is performed by NSGA-II, and they can reach 75.30% and 41.17 $/GJ, respectively. Moreover, the optimal energy storage efficiency is obviously higher than that of other energy storage technologies, indicating the great advantage of the proposed system. This paper concerns an economic and exergetic efficiency analysis of a plate heat exchanger placed in a solar installation with TiO2:SiO2/DI:EG nanofluid. This device separates the primary circuit—with the solar fluid—and the secondary circuit—in which domestic hot water flows (DHW). The solar fluid is TiO2:SiO2 nanofluid with a concentration in the range of 0.5–1.5%vol. and T = 60 °C. Its flow is maintained at a constant level of 3 dm3/min. The heat-receiving medium is domestic water with an initial temperature of 30 °C. This work records a DHW flow of V ˙ D H W , i n = 3–6(12) dm3/min. In order to calculate the exergy efficiency of the system, first, the total exergy destruction, the entropy generation number Ns, and the Bejan number Be are determined. Only for a comparable solar fluid flow, DHW V ˙ n f = V ˙ D H W 3 dm3/min, and concentrations of 0 and 0.5%vol. is there no significant improvement in the exergy efficiency. In other cases, the presence of nanoparticles significantly improves the heat transfer. The TiO2:SiO2/DI:EG nanofluid is even a 13 to 26% more effective working fluid than the traditional solar fluid; at Re = 329, the exergy efficiency is η e x e r g y = 37.29%, with a nanoparticle concentration of 0% and η e x e r g y (1.5%vol.) = 50.56%; with Re = 430, η e x e r g y (0%) = 57.03% and η e x e r g y (1.5%) = 65.9%. Exergy analysis evaluates the efficiency of system components by quantifying the rate of entropy generation. In general, the exergy destruction rate or irreversibility rate was directly obtained through the exergy balance equation. However, this method cannot determine the origin of the component's entropy generation rate, which is a very important factor in system design and improvement. In this study, a thorough energy, exergy, and thermoeconomic analysis of a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was performed, providing the heat transfer rate, entropy generation rate, and cost loss rate of each component. The irreversibility rate of each component was obtained by the Gouy–Stodola theorem. Detailed and extensive exergy and thermoeconomic analyses of the PEMFC system determined that water cooling units experience the greatest heat transfer among the components in the studied PEMFC system, resulting in the greatest irreversibility and, thus, the greatest monetary flow loss. This increasingly essential concept requires an expanded set of process analysis tools to fully comprehend the interplay of heat recovery and process electrification (e.g., heat pumping). In this paper, new Exergy Pinch Analysis tools and methods are proposed that can set lower bound work targets by acutely balancing process heat recovery and heat pumping. As part of the analysis, net energy and exergy load curves enable visualization of energy and exergy surpluses and deficits. As extensions to the grand composite curve in conventional Pinch Analysis, these curves enable examination of different pocket-cutting strategies, revealing their distinct impacts on heat, exergy, and work targets. Demonstrated via case studies on a spray dryer and an evaporator, the exergy analysis targets net shaft-work correctly. In the evaporator case study, the analysis points to the heat recovery pockets playing an essential role in reducing the work target by 25.7%. Recovering compression waste heat using latent thermal energy storage (LTES) is a promising method to enhance the round-trip efficiency of compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems. In this study, a systematic thermodynamic model coupled with a concentric diffusion heat transfer model of the cylindrical packed-bed LTES is established for a CAES system, and the numerical simulation model is validated by experimental data in the reference. Based on the numerical model, the charging–discharging performance of LTES and CAES systems is evaluated under different layouts of phase change materials (PCMs) in LTES, and the optimal layout of PCM is specified as a three-stage layout, since the exergy efficiency of LTES and round-trip efficiency are improved by 8.2% and 6.9% compared with a one-stage layout. Then, the proportion of three PCMs is optimized using response surface methods. The optimization results indicate that the exergy efficiency of LTES and round-trip efficiency of the CAES system are expected to be 80.9% and 73.3% under the PCM proportion of 0.48:0.3:0.22 for three stages, which are 7.0% and 13.1% higher than the original three-stage PCMs with equal proportions. This study examines the thermodynamic and numerical analyses of a methane-fed solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) over a temperature range varying between 873 K and 1273 K. These analyses were conducted to investigate and compare the performance of the SOFC under various operating conditions in detail. As part of the thermodynamic analysis, important parameters such as cell voltage, power density, exergy destruction, entropy generation, thermal efficiency, and exergy efficiency were calculated. These calculations were used to conduct energy and exergy analyses of the cell. According to the findings, an increase in operating temperature led to a significant improvement in performance. At the initial conditions where the SOFC operated at a temperature of 1073 K and a current density of 9000 A/m2, it was observed that when the temperature increased by 200 K while keeping the current density constant, the power density increased by a factor of 1.90 compared to the initial state, and the thermal efficiency increased by a factor of 1.45. Under a constant current density, the voltage and power density values were 1.0081 V, 1.0543 V, 2337.13 W/m2, and 2554.72 W/m2 at operating temperatures of 1073 K and 1273 K, respectively. Under a current density of 4500 A/m2, the entropy generation in the cell was determined to be 29.48 kW/K at 973 K and 23.68 kW/K at 1173 K operating temperatures. The maximum exergy efficiency of the SOFC was calculated to be 41.67% at a working temperature of 1273 K and a current density of 1500 A/m2. In this research, the simulation of an existing 31.5 MW steam power plant, providing both electricity for the national grid and hot utility for the related sugar factory, was performed by means of ProSimPlus® v. 3.7.6. The purpose of this study is to analyze the steam turbine operating parameters by means of the exergy concept with a pinch-based technique in order to assess the overall energy performance and losses that occur in the power plant. The combined pinch and exergy analysis (CPEA) initially focuses on the depiction of the hot and cold composite curves (HCCCs) of the steam cycle to evaluate the energy and exergy requirements. Based on the minimal approach temperature difference (∆Tlm) required for effective heat transfer, the exergy loss that raises the heat demand (heat duty) for power generation can be quantitatively assessed. The exergy composite curves focus on the potential for fuel saving throughout the cycle with respect to three possible operating modes and evaluates opportunities for heat pumping in the process. Well-established tools, such as balanced exergy composite curves, are used to visualize exergy losses in each process unit and utility heat exchangers. Qualtra, an innovative 10 MW geothermal power plant proposal, employs a closed-loop design to mitigate emissions, ensuring no direct release into the atmosphere. A thorough assessment utilizing energy and exergy analysis, life cycle assessment (LCA), exergo-economic analysis, and exergo environmental analysis (EevA) was conducted. The LCA results, utilizing the ReCiPe 2016 midpoint methodology, encompass all the spectrum of environmental indicators provided. The technology implemented makes it possible to avoid direct atmospheric emissions from the Qualtra plant, so the environmental impact is mainly due to indirect emissions over the life cycle. The result obtained for the global warming potential indicator is about 6.6 g CO2 eq/kWh, notably lower compared to other conventional systems. Contribution analysis reveals that the construction phase dominates, accounting for over 90% of the impact for almost all LCA midpoint categories, excluding stratospheric ozone depletion, which is dominated by the impact from the operation and maintenance phase, at about 87%. Endpoint indicators were assessed to estimate the single score value using normalization and weighting at the component level. The resulting single score is then used in an Exergo-Environmental Analysis (EEvA), highlighting the well system as the most impactful contributor, constituting approximately 45% of the total impact. Other substantial contributions to the environmental impact include the condenser (21%), the turbine (17%), and the HEGeo (14%). Effective decarbonization of the power generation sector requires a multi-pronged approach, including the implementation of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technologies. The Graz cycle features oxy-combustion CO2 capture in a power production scheme which can result in higher thermal efficiencies than that of a combined cycle. However, the auxiliary consumption required by the air separation unit to provide pure O2 results in a significant energy penalty relative to an unabated plant. In order to mitigate this penalty, the present study explores the possibility of chemical looping combustion (CLC) as an alternative means to supply oxygen for conversion of the fuel. For a midscale power plant, despite reducing the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) by approximately 12.6% at a CO2 tax of EUR 100/ton and a natural gas price of EUR 6.5/GJ and eliminating the energy penalty of CCS relative to an unabated combined cycle, the cost reductions of CLC in the Graz cycle were not compelling relative to commercially available post-combustion CO2 capture with amines. Although the central assumptions yielded a 3% lower cost for the Graz-CLC cycle, an uncertainty quantification study revealed an 85.3% overlap in the interquartile LCOE range with that of the amine benchmark, indicating that the potential economic benefit is small compared to the uncertainty of the assessment. Thus, this study indicates that the potential of CLC in gas-fired power production is limited, even when considering highly efficient advanced configurations like the Graz cycle. The decarbonization and decentralization of district heating networks lead to the shared use of on-site resources by multiple stakeholders. The optimal design of prospective equipment in such contexts should take into account the preferences and objectives of each stakeholder. This article focuses on the adaptation of a 4E multicriteria model (the criteria being energy, exergy, economic, and exergoeconomic) to include and compare the stakeholders' performance criteria around the technical design. In addition, two graphical supports are proposed that represent and cross-analyze the different stakeholders' preferred optima. A preliminary implementation of the methodology is illustrated through a study case in France, which features waste heat recovery for district heating utilization. After presenting the results, a discussion is offered on how to complete the methodology with an iterative negotiation procedure to determine the most suitable design. It was concluded, among other considerations, that the relaxation of the stakeholders' optimality requirements can greatly enable the project's feasibility. Such a relaxation could be implemented in the form of a joint consortium. In addition, the results showed that stakeholder relaxations of requirements can lead to new solutions that may outperform the best solutions pre-relaxation. A numerical investigation was carried out in ANSYS Fluent® on a photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) system with MXene/water nanofluid as heat transfer fluid (HTF). The interaction of different operating parameters (nanofluid mass fraction, mass flow rate, inlet temperature and incident radiation) on the output response of the system (thermal efficiency, electrical efficiency, thermal exergy efficiency, and electrical exergy efficiency) was studied using a predictive model generated using response surface methodology (RSM). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was used to evaluate the significance of input parameters affecting the energy and exergy efficiencies of the nanofluid-based PV/T system. The nanofluid mass flow rate was discovered to be having an impact on the thermal efficiency of the system. Electrical efficiency, thermal exergy efficiency, and electrical exergy efficiency were found to be greatly influenced by incident solar radiation. The percentage contribution of each factor on the output response was calculated. Input variables were optimized using the desirability function to maximize energy and exergy efficiency. The developed statistical model generated an optimum value for the mass flow rate (71.84 kgh−1), the mass fraction (0.2 wt%), incident radiation (581 Wm−2), and inlet temperature (20 °C). Increasing attention is being given to reduce the specific energy consumption in desalination processes, which translates into greater use of exergy analysis. An exergetic analysis provides relevant information related to the influence of the efficiency of a single component in the global plant performance and in the exergy cost of the product. Therefore, an exergy analysis identifies the main improvement potentials in a productive thermodynamic process. Related to desalination technologies, many previous papers deal with the calculation of the parameters involved in the exergy analysis, the exergetic efficiency of different processes, plants, and technologies among them. However, different approaches for formulating the exergetic efficiency have been suggested in the literature, often without sufficient understanding and consistency. In this work, these formulations, applied to the main desalination components and processes, are compared and critically reviewed. Two definitions of exergy efficiency are applied to the desalination components of the three main thermal desalination processes (multieffect distillation–thermal vapour compression, multistage flash distillation, and direct-contact membrane distillation). The results obtained for the exergy efficiency of the MED-TVC, MSF, and DCMD processes for the input–output approach are 21.35%, 17.08%, and 1.28%, respectively, compared to the consumed–produced approach that presented 3.1%, 1.58%, and 0.37%, respectively. The escalating challenge of waste management demands innovative strategies to mitigate environmental impacts and harness valuable resources. This study investigates waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies for municipal waste management in Kočevje, Slovenia. An analysis of available waste streams reveals substantial energy potential from mixed municipal waste, biodegradable waste, and livestock manure. Various WtE technologies, including incineration, pyrolysis, gasification, and anaerobic digestion, are compared. The results show that processing mixed municipal waste using thermochemical processes could annually yield up to 0.98 GWh of electricity, and, separately, 3.22 GWh of useable waste heat for district heating or industrial applications. Furthermore, by treating 90% of the biodegradable waste, up to 1.31 GWh of electricity and 1.76 GWh of usable waste heat could be generated annually from biodegradable municipal waste and livestock manure using anaerobic digestion and biogas combustion in a combined heat and power facility. Gasification coupled with a gas-turbine-based combined heat and power cycle is suggested as optimal. Integration of WtE technologies could yield 2.29 GWh of electricity and 3.55 GWh of useable waste heat annually, representing an annual exergy yield of 2.98 GWh. Within the Kočevje municipality, this amount of energy could cover 23.6% of the annual household electricity needs and cover the annual space and water heating requirements of 10.0% of households with district heating. Additionally, CO2-eq. emissions could be reduced by up to 20%, while further offsetting emissions associated with electricity and district heat generation by 1907 tons annually. Supply disruptions, uncertainty, and unprecedented price rises of fossil fuels due to the recent pandemic and war have highlighted the importance of using renewable sources to meet energy demands. Solar air collectors (SACs) are major types of solar energy systems that can be utilized for space and water heating, drying, and thermal energy storage. Although there is sufficient documentation on the thermal analyses of SACs, no comprehensive reviews of the exergetic performance or qualitative insight on heat conversion are available. The primary objective of this article is to provide a comprehensive review on the optimum conditions at which the thermal performance of diverse types of solar air collectors is optimized. The effect of operating parameters such as temperature rise, flow rate, geometric parameters, solar radiation, and the Reynolds number on the thermal performance of SACs in terms of thermal hydraulic performance, energy, and exergy efficiencies has been reviewed adaptively. Beyond the operating parameters, a deep investigation is outlined to monitor fluid dynamics using analytical and computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) methodologies in the technology of SACs. In the third phase, thermodynamic irreversibility due to optical losses, thermal losses between absorber and environment, heat losses due to insulation, edge losses, and entropy generation are reported and discussed, which serve as the fundamental tools for optimization purposes. This study investigates the application of thermoelectric power generation devices in conjunction with cold chain logistics transport vehicles, focusing on their efficiency and performance. Our experimental results highlight the impact of thermoelectric module characteristics, such as thermal conductivity and the filling thickness of copper foam, on the energy utilization efficiency of the system. The specific experimental setup involved a simulated logistics cold chain transport vehicle exhaust waste heat recovery thermoelectric power generation system, consisting of a high-temperature exhaust heat exchanger channel and two side cooling water tanks. Thermoelectric modules (TEMs) were installed between the heat exchanger and the water tanks to use the temperature difference and convert heat energy into electrical energy. The analysis demonstrates that using high-performance thermoelectric modules with a lower thermal conductivity results in better utilization of the temperature difference for power generation. Additionally, the insertion of porous metal copper foam within the heat exchanger channel enhances convective heat transfer, leading to an improved performance. Furthermore, the study examines the concepts of exergy and entropy generation, providing insights into the system energy conversion processes and efficiency. The cement industry is regarded as one of the primary producers of world carbon emissions; hence, lowering its carbon emissions is vital for fostering the development of a low-carbon economy. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies play significant roles in sectors dominated by fossil energy. This study aimed to address issues such as high exhaust gas volume, low CO2 concentration, high pollutant content, and difficulty in carbon capture during cement production by combining traditional cement production processes with cryogenic air separation technology and CO2 purification and compression technology. Aspen Plus® was used to create the production model in its entirety, and a sensitivity analysis was conducted on pertinent production parameters. The findings demonstrate that linking the oxygen-enriched combustion process with the cement manufacturing process may decrease the exhaust gas flow by 54.62%, raise the CO2 mass fraction to 94.83%, cut coal usage by 30%, and considerably enhance energy utilization efficiency. An exergy analysis showed that the exergy efficiency of the complete kiln system was risen by 17.56% compared to typical manufacturing procedures. However, the cryogenic air separation system had a relatively low exergy efficiency in the subsidiary subsystems, while the clinker cooling system and flue gas circulation system suffered significant exergy efficiency losses. Raw material with a high Al2O3 content has led to an increase in the Al2O3 content in blast furnace slag, which has affected the normal operation of a blast furnace. The exergy analysis method is an important method for studying the energy utilization of high-alumina blast furnace smelting. In this paper, to investigate the impact of slag composition on exergy efficiency and optimize exergy efficiency during the smelting process of high Al2O3 iron ore, a gray box exergy analysis model of blast furnace smelting and an objective function for minimizing the total exergy loss were developed. The results indicated that the blast furnace smelting process had an exergy efficiency (η) of 28.29% for hot metal and slag; the exergy efficiency of the blast furnace did not significantly increase with the increasing w(MgO)/w(Al2O3) and R (w(CaO)/w(SiO2)), but the exergy efficiency of the blast furnace declined with increasing w(Al2O3). The Pasco region in Peru is an area that has historically been polluted by mining activity and population growth. As a result, there is an increased production of urban wastewater and acidic water that contaminate local lakes such as Quiulacocha and Patarcocha. The construction of a treatment plant that can treat the different types of wastewaters has not yet been studied, and its sustainability has not yet been evaluated. The objective of this research was to predict the sustainability of co-treatment systems in different scenarios between urban wastewater and acidic water, expressed in terms of a ternary emergy diagram. The design of the co-treatment plant was carried out at an inflow of 10 L/s. The first scenario (Treatment I) has a primary settler for the mixture of urban wastewater and acidic water, while the second scenario (Treatment II) involves a settler and a subsurface artificial wetland, and the third scenario (Treatment IIIa and IIb) presents a settler, an electrocoagulation system and a secondary settler; this scenario differentiates between the use of urban wastewater and eutrophicated water from Patarcocha Lake. The results of the ternary diagram show the contributions of the fractions of renewable resources from Treatment I (69%), from Treatment II (65.7%), from Treatment IIIa (61.6%), and from Treatment IIIb (21.8%); the fractions of non-renewable resources in Treatment I (26.13%), Treatment II (24.13%), Treatment IIIa (23.33%), and Treatment IIIb (9.50%); and the fractions of imported inputs in Treatment I (4.84%), Treatment II (9.37%), Treatment IIIa (15.04%), and Treatment IIIb (68.72%). It is concluded that the use of a co-treatment system for urban wastewater and acidic water is sustainable in the long term when using an electrocoagulator or an artificial wetland. Conventional economic growth models treat production/consumption as abstractions linked only by money flows, disregarding their connection to the physical world. Nevertheless, the existing literature suggests that energy flows can influence production and links useful exergy prices with economic growth. Useful exergy is energy measured at the stage where it produces an end-use (and is a measurement of energy quality). Not all approaches in the literature use this metric and they often consider energy as a primary input (despite it being an intermediate input). We explore the relationship between energy flows and economic growth for the US through a framework where useful exergy, the output of an "extended energy sector" (where all effects of increasing primary-to-final-to-useful exergy efficiency are located), is an intermediate input for a "non-energy sector". Together, they encompass the entire economy. We conclude that the share of investment in the extended energy sector grew with the overall economic growth throughout 1960–2020, while the labour share decreased. The non-energy sector contributed the largest share of consumption, exports, imports and labour. In recent years, the energy sector has overtaken it in terms of investment. The insufficiency of energy supply and availability remains a significant global energy challenge. This work proposes a novel approach to addressing global energy challenges by testing the supercritical property and conversion of low-temperature thermal heat into useful energy. It introduces a combined-cascade steam-to-steam trigeneration cycle integrated with vapour absorption refrigeration (VAR) and district heating systems. Energetic and exergetic techniques were applied to assess irreversibility and exergetic destruction. At a gas turbine power of 26.1 MW, energy and exergy efficiencies of 76.68% and 37.71% were achieved, respectively, while producing 17.98 MW of electricity from the steam-to-steam driven cascaded topping and bottoming plants. The cascaded plant attained an energetic efficiency of 38.45% and an exergy efficiency of 56.19%. The overall cycle efficiencies were 85.05% (energy) and 77.99% (exergy). More than 50% of the plant's lost energy came from the combustion chamber of the gas turbine. The trigeneration system incorporated a binary NH3–H2O VAR system, emphasizing its significance in low-temperature energy systems. The VAR system achieved a cycle exergetic efficiency of 92.25% at a cooling capacity of 2.07 MW, utilizing recovered waste heat at 88 °C for district hot water. Solar energy has become an energy source for a wide range of uses, including in solar cookers, due to its availability, cleanliness, environmental friendliness, and sustainability. In this study, an indirect solar cooker was investigated by measuring its thermal performance using a Graphene Oxide (GO) nanofluid. Water, GO (250 ppm)-water, and GO (500 ppm)-water were used as heat transfer fluids. The experimental set-up consisted of the cooking part and a solar collector, which are the two essential elements in indirect solar cookers. The cooking part was a wooden box solar cooker, and the parabolic trough solar collector was a polished stainless steel structure. The solar cooker was assessed using the stagnation test and load test as well as energy and exergy measurements. According to the test results, the averaged F1 was 0.1 for the base fluid water, 0.11 for GO (250 ppm)-water, and 0.13 for GO (500 ppm)-water. In addition, using a GO nanofluid instead of water in the solar cooker, the system's thermal performance, energy, and exergy efficiency were improved. The use of the GO (250 ppm)-water and GO (500 ppm)-water nanofluids instead of water in the system improved the overall energy efficiency of the system by 3.3 and 4.2%. Hydrogen from natural gas reforming can be produced efficiently with a high CO2 capture rate. This can be achieved through oxygen-blown autothermal reforming as the core technology, combined with pressure-swing adsorption for hydrogen purification and refrigeration-based tail gas separation for CO2 capture and recirculation of residual hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane. The low-temperature tail gas separation section is presented in detail. The main objective of the paper is to study and quantify the exergy efficiency of this separation process in detail. To achieve this, a detailed exergy analysis is conducted. The irreversibilities in 42 different process components are quantified. In order to provide transparent verification of the consistency of exergy calculations, the total irreversibility rate is calculated by two independent approaches: Through the bottom-up approach, all individual irreversibilities are added to obtain the total irreversibility rate. Through the top-down approach, the total irreversibility rate is calculated solely by the exergy flows crossing the control volume boundaries. The consistency is verified as the comparison of results obtained by the two methods shows a relative deviation of 4 · 10 − 7 . The exergy efficiency of the CO2 capture process is calculated, based on two different definitions. Cascade high-temperature heat pumps (CHTHPs) are often applied to recover low-temperature industrial waste heat owing to their large temperature lift. Through a comprehensive consideration of thermodynamic and economic performance, conventional and advanced exergy and exergoeconomic analyses are employed in this study to evaluate the potential for the improvement in CHTHP systems. The results show that the avoidable endogenous exergy destruction in a CHTHP system accounts for 62.26% of its total exergy destruction, indicating that most of the exergy destruction comes from the components. This suggests that CHTHP systems still have significant potential for improvement. The very low exergoeconomic factor of the total system (only 0.75%) implies that the exergy destruction cost has a great influence on the economic performance of a CHTHP system. The high- and low-temperature compressors are the two components with the highest exergy destruction, accounting for 34.14% and 26.79% of the total exergy destruction in the system, respectively. Moreover, their exergy destruction cost is much larger than that of the other components. Thus, the priorities for improvement should be the high- and low-temperature compressors. The decrease in exergy destruction in compressors produces a reduction in carbon emissions. There are numerous analytical and/or computational tools for evaluating the energetic sustainability of biomass in the sugar industry. However, the simultaneous integration of the energetic–exergetic and emergetic criteria for such evaluation is still insufficient. The objective of the present work is to propose a range of indicators to evaluate the sustainability of the use of biomass as fuel in the sugar industry. For this purpose, energy, exergy, and emergy evaluation tools were theoretically used as sustainability indicators. They were validated in five variants of different biomass and their mixtures in two studies of technologies used in Cuba for the sugar industry. As a result, the energy method showed, for all variants, an increase in efficiency of about 5% in the VU-40 technology compared to the Retal technology. There is an increase in energy efficiency when considering AHRs of 2.8% or Marabu (Dichrostachys cinerea) (5.3%) compared to the V 1 variant. Through the study of the exergetic efficiency, an increase of 2% was determined in both technologies for the case of the V 1 variant, and an increase in efficiency is observed in the V 2 variant of 5% and the V 3 variant (5.6%) over the V 1 variant. The emergetic method showed superior results for the VU-40 technology over the Retal technology due to higher fuel utilization. In the case of the V 1 variant, there was a 7% increase in the renewability ratio and an 11.07% increase in the sustainability index. In the traditional C3MR process (T-C3MR), the boiling gas (BOG) output from the last stage of the gas–liquid separator is directly discharged, in which the excellent low-temperature capability is not utilized, and the system efficiency is decreased. In liquefied natural gas (LNG), single-objective optimization methods are commonly used to optimize system parameters, which may result in incomplete system analysis. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization strategy for the improved C3MR process(I-C3MR) based on a new multi-objective optimization algorithm called EHR-GWO-GA. Firstly, the main work proposes an I-C3MR structure. Secondly, an optimization strategy of the I-C3MR with the maximization of liquefaction amount, minimization of unit energy consumption and minimization of exergy loss as objective functions are proposed. Based on the optimization results, the influence of decision variables on liquefaction amount, unit energy consumption and exergy loss are analyzed, and the results show that the decision variables have good adaptability. Finally, a detailed exergy analysis of the equipment used is made, and the results show that the main exergy losses come from the water coolers and compressors, accounting for 32% and 34%, respectively. Compared to the T-C3MR, the improved C3MR based on EHR-GWO-GA(E-C3MR) has an approximate 8% increase in liquefaction amount—a roughly 23% decrease in unit energy consumption and a decrease of nearly 24% in exergy loss. A scramjet engine consisting of several components is a highly coupled system that urgently needs a universal performance metric. Exergy is considered as a potential universal currency to assess the performance of scramjet engines. In this paper, a control-volume-based exergy method for the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes solution of truncated and corrected Busemann inlets was proposed. An exergy postprocessing code was developed to achieve this method. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of exergies in the Busemann inlets were performed. A complete understanding of the evolution process of anergy and the location where anergy occurs in the inlet at various operation conditions was also obtained. The results show that the exergy destroyed in the Busemann inlet can be decomposed into shock wave anergy, viscous anergy and thermal anergy. Shock wave anergy accounts for less than 4% of the total exergy destroyed while thermal anergy and viscous anergy, in a roughly equivalent magnitude, contribute to almost all the remaining. The vast majority of inflow exergy is converted into boundary pressure work and thermal exergy. Some of the thermal exergy excluded by the computation of the total pressure recovery coefficient belongs to the available energy, as this partial energy will be further converted into useful work in combustion chambers. An analysis of entropy generation and exergy efficiency can effectively explore the energy-saving potential of reheating furnaces. This paper simulated the combustion, flow, and heat transfer in a walking beam reheating furnace by establishing a half-furnace model. The entropy generation rate distribution of different thermal processes was numerically calculated. The effect of slab residence time and fuel distribution in the furnace was studied to optimize exergy efficiency. The results indicated that combustion and radiative heat transfer are the primary sources of entropy generation. Irreversible losses accounted for 26.39% of the total input exergy, in which the combustion process accounted for 16.43%, and radiative heat transfer accounted for 8.47%. Reducing the residence time by 60 min decreased irreversible exergy loss by about 2.5% but increased heat dissipation and exhaust exergy loss by 5.8%. Energy saving can only be achieved when the heat exchanger's exergy recovery efficiency exceeds 36% under different fuel supplies. Keeping the total fuel supply unchanged, increasing the fuel mass flow rate in heating-I zone while decreasing it in heating-II zone resulted in a 1.5% decrease in exergy efficiency. This article introduces a new, physically-based Lyapunov function definition that can be used as acoustic energy for finite-amplitude pressure oscillations in reacting systems, especially in combustion chambers. Reacting flow is seen as an open, non-equilibrium (parameters are distributed unevenly locally) thermodynamic system. This Lyapunov function is defined as the maximum mechanical work that could be extracted by a heat engine from the studied system if this system were disconnected from the inlet and outlet and from any other surrounding environment and the engine could transfer to the surrounding environment only mechanical work. Biomass is widely acknowledged as a plentiful and easily accessible source of renewable energy. Unlike many other renewable sources, biomass offers a consistent and predictable power supply without significant concerns about energy and environmental impacts. When used as a fuel in polygeneration systems designed to produce multiple outputs such as electricity, heat, chemicals, and synthetic fuels, biomass greatly enhances overall system efficiency by minimizing energy losses. These systems gain further advantages when integrated in a decentralized manner with energy-intensive applications like buildings. This review article aims to shift the focus of readers from generic biomass-based systems to polygeneration systems tailored for specific applications, such as buildings. The overview will discuss various biomass resources, systematic approaches, technologies, successful case studies, potential benefits, and limitations of such systems integrated into real-life building applications. It also categorizes studies based on different conversion processes such as combustion, gasification, and anaerobic digestion, with combustion-based polygeneration systems being the most prevalent. The review also explores the use of standalone and hybrid biomass-based energy systems. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the analysis considers energy, exergy, economic, and environmental perspectives. Parameters such as the primary energy savings (PES), exergy efficiency, simple payback (SPB) period, and CO2 emission reductions are commonly used in system analyses. The review underscores how polygeneration systems integrated into the building sector can enhance efficiency, resilience, and environmental sustainability. The diffuser is a critical component in a heat storage tank, and its structure has an important influence on the thermal performance of the heat storage tank. At present, research on the structure of diffusers often focuses on the change of one single parameter, which results in the need for a comprehensive structure analysis of diffusers in heat storage tanks. This paper comprehensively considers the inlet diameter, hole distance, and hole diameter of the diffuser and the inlet conditions of the heat storage tank. Then, a new evaluation index, namely the non-uniformity coefficient of the diffuser, is proposed. The experiments verify the accuracy of numerical calculation, and the related empirical formula is summarized finally. The results show that the diffuser with a small non-uniformity coefficient can achieve thin temperature stratification and higher exergy efficiency. In other words, the non-uniformity coefficient is in good agreement with temperature stratification and the exergy efficiency of the heat storage tank. When the flow rate of the inlet device is 0.5 m/s, the exergy efficiency increases by nearly 30 percentage points and the non-uniformity coefficient of the No. 4 diffuser is 3.39%. In contrast, that of the No. 8 diffuser is 75.17%. This evaluation index is suitable for different diffuser types with high accuracy. This study investigates the potential for renewable energy-based electricity generation using existing wave, wind, and solar energies in Türkiye. A significant part of Türkiye's energy needs is still met using fossil fuels. Considering the country's resources, renewable energy sources appear as an alternative source to meet these needs. The objective of this study is to find an effective, efficient, economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable way to produce electricity to reach net-zero targets and transition towards low-carbon and carbon-free energy systems. To be able to make a deep investigation about the relevant issue, six provinces from different regions of Türkiye (Antalya, Çanakkale, İstanbul, İzmir, Kırklareli, and Muğla) are assessed in terms of wave, wind, and solar energy potential, including wave data, wind speeds, sunshine duration, and global radiation values. Wind, wave, and solar energy data of the selected regions were taken from the ERA5 database, which is the weather forecast model of the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Türkiye and the General Directorate of Meteorology. Calculations were made using monthly data for the last 5 years. Considering the coastal lengths in the determined regions, the annual total electrical power produced from wave, solar, and wind energies was calculated. In these calculations, the coastal length parameter was assumed to be uniform across all cities, and the electrical power potential from these energy sources was analyzed. Within the framework of these analyses, the number of houses in the selected regions whose electricity needs can be met was calculated. As a result, the potential electrical power and the amount of affordable housing units in the selected regions were compared. As an important result of the studies, it was determined that the characteristic features of the selected regions, such as wavelength, wave height, and wind speed, were directly related to the applicable coast length. The power obtained from wave energy was higher than that from other renewable energy sources, considering the determined coast lengths. Wave energy was followed by parabolic solar collector, wind, and photovoltaic solar energy systems. According to the model, the power obtained from renewable energy systems was at the highest level in the Kırklareli/Demirköy province compared to other locations. Kırklareli was followed by İstanbul, Antalya, İzmir, Muğla, and Çanakkale. It was also found that the electricity needs of 763,578 houses were met in the Kırklareli/Demirköy region, and the electricity needs of 470,590 houses were met in the Çanakkale/Ayvacık region. The statistically optimized factors using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) for wind, photovoltaic, parabolic solar collector, and wave power were reported as 995.278, 4529.743, 2264.546, and 276,495.09, respectively. The optimal factors aim to achieve a total electricity generation rate of 2.491 × 109 (kWh/year), a total number of houses of 682,590.55 (number/year), and a total cost of USD 813,940,876. In line with the results obtained, the Kırklareli/Demirköy region becomes favorable when considering wave and wave-integrated wind and solar energies. This paper studies how the correlation with the Nusselt number affects the final result of the efficiency, ε, and exergy efficiency, ηex, of a chevron-type gasketed plate heat exchanger, which is installed in a typical small solar installation dedicated to single-family housing; the solar fluid is a TiO2:SiO2/EG:DI hybrid nanofluid with concentrations from 0% to 1.5% vol. The experimental model assumes constant flow of the solar fluid and varies on the domestic hot water side—from 3 lpm to 6 lpm. The inlet temperatures are 30 °C and 60 °C on the cold and hot sides of the heat exchanger, respectively. Of the six analysed correlations that showed similar trends, it is concluded that for the assumed flow conditions, geometry, and chevron angle of the plate heat exchanger, one model is the most accurate. The largest difference between the ηex values for a given concentration is 3.4%, so the exergy efficiency is not affected by the chosen Nusselt model by very much. However, the choice of correlation with the Nusselt number significantly affects the efficiency, ε; the difference between the values obtained within a given concentration is more than 40% and depends on the Reynolds number and flow. Most research discusses the scenario with the nanofluid as a coolant. Bio-electrochemical systems have increasingly become the focus of research due to their potential in environmental biotechnology, particularly in the domains of waste utilization and energy recovery. A prominent method within this domain is the transformation of organic matter into hydrogen via microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). This study offers a thorough analysis of MEC performance, employing exergy analysis and incorporating relevant data from the existing literature. The findings of this research indicate a relationship between process efficiency and effective electron transfer originating from biological oxidation to the cathode reaction, facilitating hydrogen generation. The assessment performed revealed that the exergy efficiency of the process varies by a wide range, depending on conditions such as substrate type and concentration, applied external voltage, and the presence of specific inhibitors. This interplay between substrate concentration, overall efficiency, and energy requirement underlines the complex dynamics of optimizing MEC performance. Our insights provide understanding of the challenges in bio-electrochemical systems, offering implications for their sustainable and efficient use in environmental biotechnology. The theoretical analysis involved assessing the utilization of glucose and glycerol, along with the evaluation of electrical energy consumption and hydrogen yield. Our results demonstrate that a higher applied voltage is associated with greater exergy efficiency.
