Building renovation is a key initiative to promote energy efficiency, the integration of renewable energy sources (RESs), and a reduction in CO2 emissions. Supporting these goals, emerging research is dedicated to energy communities and positive energy districts. In this work, an urban neighborhood of six buildings in Trento (Italy) is considered. Firstly, the six buildings are modeled with the Urban Modeling Interface tool to evaluate the energy performances in 2024 and 2050, also accounting for the different climatic conditions for these two time periods. Energy demands for space heating, domestic hot water, space cooling, electricity, and transport are computed. Then, EnergyPLAN coupled with a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is used to investigate 12 different energy decarbonization scenarios in 2024 and 2050 based on different boundaries for RESs, energy storage, hydrogen, energy system integration, and energy community incentives. Two conflicting objectives are considered: cost and CO2 emission reductions. The results show, on the one hand, the key role of sector coupling technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles in exploiting local renewables and, on the other hand, the higher costs in introducing both electricity storage to approach complete decarbonization and hydrogen as an alternative strategy in the electricity, thermal, and transport sectors. As an example of the quantitative valuable finding of this work, in scenario S1 "all sectors and EC incentive" for the year 2024, a large reduction of 55% of CO2 emissions with a modest increase of 11% of the total annual cost is identified along the Pareto front. The development of electric gerotor pumps is a complex multiphysical optimization problem. To develop optimal systems, accurate simulation models are required to increase digital reliability. An important challenge is the accurate prediction of the pump behavior for extreme temperatures in automotive applications from − 40 °C to 110 °C, where the viscosity of the fluid changes significantly. Therefore, simulation-based methods (numerical methods for calculating viscous friction) were developed and validated by measurements, including climatic chamber tests. The results show a strong correlation between simulated and measured performance characteristics, especially in terms of volumetric flow rate ( < 5 % ), pump torque and efficiency ( < 7 % ) at different temperature and viscosity conditions over a wide speed range (1000–5000 rpm) and different system pressures (0.5–5 bar). A novel method for simulating the cold start behavior of pumps (journal bearing approach for outer gear in pump housing) was introduced and validated by measurements. The methods presented significantly reduce the need for physical testing and accelerate the development process, as the pump behavior at each operating point can be accurately predicted before a hardware prototype is built. This improves the understanding of gerotor pump characteristics and provides insights to further improve the model-based development of electric oil pumps for the automotive industry. The European Union faces the pressing challenge of decarbonising the buildings sector to meet its climate neutrality goal by 2050. Buildings are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through energy consumption for heating and cooling. This study uses the advanced PRIMES-BuiMo model to develop state-of-the-art innovative pathways and strategies to decarbonise the EU buildings sector, providing insights into energy consumption patterns, renovation rates and equipment replacement dynamics in the EU and in two representative Member States, Sweden and Greece. The model-based analysis shows that the EU's transition towards climate neutrality requires significant investment in energy efficiency of buildings combined with decarbonisation of the fuel mix, mostly through the uptake of electric heat pumps replacing the use of fossil fuels. The Use Case also demonstrates that targeted policy interventions considering the national context and specificities are required to ensure an efficient and sustainable transition to zero-emission buildings. The analysis of transformational strategies in Greece and Sweden provides an improved understanding of the role of country-specific characteristics on policy effectiveness so as to inform more targeted and contextually appropriate approaches to decarbonise the buildings sector across the EU. In the context of the energy transition, the share of new loads such as charging infrastructure for electromobility and electric heat pumps as well as feed-ins such as photovoltaic systems will steadily increase. This results in an increased degree of complexity for strategic network planning. In particular, the power flow analyses for the dimensioning of transformers and lines per network level currently still require different methods for the correct dimensioning of these equipment. They need to be carried out in separate data sets. For the dimensioning of the equipment simultaneity factors are predominantly used for realistic load assumptions in strategic network planning. These simultaneity factors and resulting load assumptions are determined from the planning perspective of the transformers and from the planning perspective of the lines per network level to be able to dimension the corresponding equipment. This results in different power flow results for the analysis and evaluation of different network levels in particular. This contribution presents a new concept for network modelling in which the simultaneity of the different planning perspectives of the different network levels results from a single power flow calculation in a coherent data set. In recent years, companies have employed numerous methods to lower expenses and enhance system efficiency in the oilfield. Energy consumption has constituted a significant portion of these expenses. This paper introduces a normalized consumption factor to effectively evaluate energy consumption in the oilfield. Statistical analysis has been conducted on nearly 45,000 wells from six fields in China. Critical factors such as lifting method, daily production, pump depth, gas–oil ratio (GOR), and well deviation angle were evaluated individually. Results revealed that higher production could lead to lower normalized consumption for beam pumps, progressive cavity pumps, and electric submersible pump systems, thus enhancing system efficiency. Additionally, a higher GOR might result in lower normalized consumption for the beam pump system, while the deviation angle of the well showed negligible impact on the normalized consumption factor. This manuscript offers a method to assess the impacts of artificial lift methods on production and discusses suggestions for reducing consumption associated with each lifting method in the oilfield. Transformative actions are crucial across all sectors emitting greenhouse gases. Nonetheless, energy transition research to date displays a notable imbalance, with a larger emphasis on the supply side than on the demand side. The present study addresses this inequity by focusing on residential sector space heating demand, a frequently overlooked energy service that currently contributes substantially to global greenhouse gas emissions. Our primary objective is to pinpoint effective climate policies and space heating strategies that align with the EU's ambitious targets for emission reduction. We employ the recently developed TIMES-Europe model to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the residential sector's policy frameworks, technological advancements, and associated costs. This analysis aims to determine the measures necessary to meet ambitious climate objectives within the European context. To achieve this, we formulate four distinct scenarios, each representing varying levels of ambition and collaboration among EU member states, thereby providing insight into the pathways toward achieving these targets. By implementing current intended EU policies on the renovation of dwellings, we project a substantial reduction of at most 850 PJ, or, i.e., a 19% decrease, in yearly energy demand for space heating between 2020 and 2050. In contrast, if the recent pace of dwelling renovation within the EU were to continue, space heating energy savings from renovation would only amount to less than 400 PJ/yr (i.e., a 9% reduction) in the same period. In our more ambitious climate scenarios, phasing out fossil fuels leads to widespread electrification of the European residential sector, and by 2050, electricity from heat pumps and electric boilers accounts for over 68% of the total residential sector space heating demand. The outcomes of our study underline the importance of implementing the currently planned EU policies. To achieve climate and energy goals in the building sector, the current pace of renovating existing structures must double, overcoming prevailing barriers. Key Performance Indicators play a pivotal role in science-based decision making, emphasizing both direct and indirect benefits of building retrofits. The authors aim to contribute to proper metric identification for multi-perspective building performance assessment and formulate a methodology supporting energy planning decisions. They introduce the Global Cost per Emission Savings (GCES), an aggregated indicator encompassing both public (CO2 emissions) and private (global cost) perspectives of diverse retrofit technologies for building HVAC systems. Applied to the Italian residential building stock via the Reference Building approach, the methodology is tested using condensing gas boilers, biomass boilers, and electric heat pumps, revealing diverse environmental and economic performances. Addressing the establishment of effective decision-support tools for policymakers, the paper explores the potential impact of various policies on the favorability of technologies. Different policy scenarios are delineated to analyze how distinct approaches may influence the attractiveness of technologies. Notably, in the baseline scenario, biomass boilers hold an advantage over heat pumps according to the GCES index. However, scenarios involving technology-specific incentives or a greenhouse gases emission tax failed to alter the technological ranking, leaving heat pumps financially uncompetitive. In this paper, we present a comprehensive assessment of the effects of residential loads, electric vehicles (EVs), and electric heat pumps (HPs) on low-voltage (LV) grids in urban, suburban, and rural areas of Germany. Firstly, real data are used to determine the typical structures for each LV grid region. Secondly, nine scenarios are defined with different levels of EV and HP penetration. Thirdly, the Low Voltage Load Flow Calculation in the DIgSILENT PowerFactory is performed for all scenarios while taking the simultaneity factor (SF) for each load type into consideration to calculate the minimum voltage and maximum loadings of transformer and lines in each grid; this allows for the grid's potential bottlenecks to be identified. The network simulations are carried out with the consideration of charging powers of 11 kW and 22 kW in order to evaluate how an increasing EV load in the future may affect the grid's parameters. To the best of our knowledge, no study in the literature has simultaneously addressed all of the aforementioned topics. The results of this study provide a useful framework that distribution system operators (DSOs) may apply to anticipate the forthcoming challenges and figure out when grid reinforcement will be required. Optimal operation of petroleum production is important in a transition from energy systems based on fossil fuel to sustainable systems. One sub-process in petroleum production deals with transport from the (subsea) well-bore to a topside separator. Good control design for such operation requires a dynamic model of the petroleum flow from the well-bore to the separator. Here, such a dynamic model is considered for liquid production (oil/water) using an electric submersible pump (ESP) to aid in counteracting gravity and friction forces. Based on an existing model used for industrial control design, one goal is to report a complete dynamic model in a single paper. Emphasis is put on dimensionless equipment models for the simple change of units, and the model is developed from physical laws for easy replacement of sub-models, if needed. All the necessary information (equations, parameters) for model implementation is provided, and two candidate equation-based modeling languages are selected and compared: Modelica and ModelingToolkit [MTK] for Julia. The simulation results are virtually identical for the two languages and make sense from physics; however, there is a minor discrepancy in one plot—likely caused by slight differences in accuracy in handling initialization in the implicit algebraic equations. The implementation structures of the model in Modelica and MTK are similar. Modelica is a mature and excellent modeling tool, handles large-scale models, and has tools for producing C code and integration with other tools. MTK is still in rapid development, supports more model types than Modelica, and is integrated in an eco-system with excellent support for control design, optimization, model fitting, and more. In the EU, the building sector is responsible for 40% of the global energy consumption for final uses and 36% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Heat pumps allow for the replacement of conventional systems based on fossil fuels with the perspective of combining PV and solar thermal collectors. In order to rationalize the use of the solar source, this paper examined the self-consumption electricity share, the CO2 equivalent emissions, and the domestic hot water demand covered by renewable sources which were determined in two opposite climatic conditions. These involved both electric and thermal storage systems and considered two different control strategies. The first is commonly used for the management of air-conditioning systems, the second was specifically conceived to maximize the exploitation of the solar source. Results showed that the latter significantly reduced grid dependence in both locations, determining the direct satisfaction of 76% of the thermal and electric loads through the PV self-consumption, determined by 18 kWp of installed PV and a battery capacity of 24 kWh. In terms of equivalent CO2 emissions, when the two control strategies were compared, a remarkable reduction in emissions was registered for the latter, with percentages ranging between 8% and 36% as a function of PV surface and battery capacity. The analysis of domestic hot water supplies revealed disparities between the two localities: the colder first, relied more on heat pumps for water heating, while the warmer second, benefitted from the large availability of solar radiation. The auxiliary feedwater electric pump, which is vital in nuclear power units, demands exceptional seismic reliability. The impact of the seismic excitation direction on the seismic response of the complex auxiliary feedwater electric pump structure remains inadequately understood, thereby introducing uncertainties into seismic analysis and equipment installation procedures. To address this challenge, this study centers on a representative horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pump based on the finite element model and modal analysis. Utilizing the response spectrum method and the square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) vibration pattern superposition principle, the research comprehensively explores the seismic response characteristics of individual pressure-bearing components and key rotor positions under seismic excitation from various angles. Findings reveal intricate variations in maximum stress and displacement responses for each pressure-bearing component under safe shutdown earthquake (SSE) level seismic excitation, corresponding to different input angles of seismic spectra. In assessing the seismic operability of the clearance between the impeller and the stator, the direction near 45° exhibits the maximum displacement response, highlighting the need for focused attention in testing and verification checks. The methodologies and conclusions presented in this paper offer valuable insights for designing, optimizing, and installing horizontal multi-stage centrifugal pumps, including auxiliary feedwater electric pumps, providing valuable guidance for future applications in the field. In this paper, the performance of an innovative micro-combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system, based on an internal combustion engine fueled with syngas from woody biomass, is analyzed. In particular, a numerical model, which considers a direct coupling between the internal combustion engine and the gasifier as a novel aspect, was developed, validated and applied to three different case studies to perform an energetic, economic and environmental analysis. For each considered case, the CCHP system was equipped with a reversible electric air–water pump and a back-up boiler. The energy analysis shows that the user characterized by a high uniformity of the thermal load exploits the CCHP system in the optimal way as it allows for the highest thermal self-consumption rate. On the contrary, for the cases in which the thermal request is not uniform, a high electric surplus is recorded. In this case, the adoption of the heat pump allows to compensate for this disadvantage by recovering the electric surplus, thus achieving a thermal integration and CO2 emissions reduction of about 15.8% with respect to the case in which no heat pump is used. Overall, the results demonstrate the affordability of the biomass-based CCHP system, which is of increasing importance in this period of contingent international political crisis. In order to study the internal flow characteristics of the electric submersible pump (ESP) when the gas–liquid two-phase flow is conveyed by the variable frequency variable speed operation and the change of the imported gas content, the impeller of the Q10# ESP is taken as the research object, based on the Eulerian-Eulerian non-homogeneous phase. The flow model, the unsteady Reynolds time-averaged N-S equation, and the standard k-ε turbulence model are used for transient simulation calculations of the gas–liquid two-phase flow in the impeller of the ESP. Calculations show that with the rotation of the impeller, the gas phase is unevenly distributed in the flow channel. The gas phase is mainly concentrated on the inlet side of the flow channel near the front cover, and the gas phase exhibits periodic aggregation and diffusion in the flow channel. When the impeller speed increases, the period of periodic accumulation and diffusion of gas in the flow channel is shortened and the gas concentration in the impeller decreases, the overall flow velocity in the flow channel increases, and the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet increases. The pressure difference between the two sides of the blade is proportional to the speed of the impeller, and the fluctuation frequency of the blade surface also increases. As the gas content increases, the maximum concentration of gas phase in the flow channel increases. The area occupied by the high concentration of gas phase in the flow channel expands toward the blade's working surface, and periodically accumulates, diffuses, and grows. The gas-liquid splitting area shrinks toward the front cover side and the pump. The internal pressure increases slightly, the main flow velocity increases, and the vortex action range increases. Ergonomics is a key factor in the improvement of health and productivity in workplaces. Its use in improving the performance of a manufacturing process and its positive effects on productivity and human performance is drawing the attention of researchers and practitioners in the field of industrial engineering. This paper proposes an ergonomic design approach applied to an innovative prototype of an adaptive automation assembly system (A3S) equipped with Microsoft Kinect™ for real-time adjustment. The system acquires the anthropometric measurements of the operator by means of the 3-D sensing device and changes its layout, arranging the mobile elements accordingly. The aim of this study was to adapt the assembly workstation to the operator dimensions, improving the ergonomics of the workstation and reducing the risks of negative effects on workers' health and safety. The case study of an assembly operation of a centrifugal electric pump is described to validate the proposed approach. The assembly operation was simulated at a traditional fixed workstation and at the A3S. The shoulder flexion angle during the assembly tasks at the A3S reduced between 18% and 47%. A bulb tubular pump unit is a horizontal tubular pump unit composed of a water pump and bulb with an electric motor installed. Electric motors, transmission equipment, and bearings are usually placed in the bulb. The bulb is located in the flow channel and has a relatively narrow space. Therefore, the shape of the bulb has a significant influence on the flow pattern and pump efficiency in the flow channel. In this study, the CFX 19.2 software was employed to optimize the bulb hydraulically according to its geometry and parameters. The research results indicate that the flow pattern at the tail of the elliptical bulb was better, the hydraulic loss at the bulb section was small, and the device efficiency was higher than that at the tail, which was round. The streamlined support had small flow resistance, minimal hydraulic loss, and a high pump unit head and efficiency. Nine schemes were selected, and the geometrical characteristics and parameters of the bulb were determined as follows: the shape of the tail of the bulb was oval, the bulb ratio was 0.96, and the shape of the support parts was streamlined. This paper presents a robust nonlinear control strategy for an electric pump for liquid-propellant rocket engines. In order to compensate for model uncertainties and disturbances, a gradient-descent-based simple learning control strategy is employed that minimizes the cost function defined on the error dynamics of the nonlinear system. Detailed stability analysis for the nonlinear system is provided. Computer simulation results are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the nonlinear control method using an electric pump model consisting of a brushless permanent-magnet direct current (DC) motor and a centrifugal pump. In particular, it is shown that by employing the developed nonlinear controller, the mass flow rate can be successfully kept at a certain level, can be changed instantly from one level to another (immediate decrease or increase), or can be changed linearly/nonlinearly, gradually, and continually for a certain period. Caloric cooling systems are potentially more efficient than systems based on vapour compression. Electrocaloric cooling systems use a phase transformation from the paraelectric to the ferroelectric state by applying or removing an electric field to pump heat. Lead scandium tantalate (PST) materials show a first-order phase transition and are one of the most promising candidates for electrocaloric cooling. To model caloric cooling systems, accurate and thermodynamically consistent material models are required. In this study, we use a phenomenological model based on an analytical equation for the specific heat capacity to describe the material behaviour of bulk PST material. This model is fitted to the experimental data, showing a very good agreement. At present, the hydraulic systems of electric forklifts and traditional internal combustion forklifts are mostly valve-controlled speed-regulation systems, which have large throttling losses and potential energy waste. To further improve the energy-saving ability of electric forklifts, the forklift's common working conditions are analyzed in this paper. A throttling loss energy-regeneration system based on pressure difference pump control is designed, and the system's working principle is described. Aiming to deal with the problem that the pump−valve compound speed regulation with constant pressure difference could not realize high controllability and energy saving at the same time, a control strategy for variable pressure difference pump−valve compound speed regulation based on pressure balance control is proposed. The handle signal is positively related to the target speed of the oil cylinder. In the low-speed stage, the closed-loop control of the actual output torque of the motor/generator keeps the pressure difference across the proportional throttle valve unchanged, and the speed adjustment is realized by changing the opening of the proportional throttle valve. In the high-speed stage, the valve opening area is kept unchanged and the target pressure difference is changed to achieve the target speed. Finally, the feasibility of the control strategy is verified through an AMESim simulation, and the minimum pressure difference switching point is determined through experiments. The experiments show that the system's energy-saving efficiency can reach 21.5% under a 1 t load. With the increase in the load, the system's energy-saving efficiency can be further improved. The impeller vane exit placement angle has a critical role in the flow characteristics of the fluid inside the lobe, thus having a profound effect on the overall pump performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the impeller exit angle on the operating characteristics of a high-speed well submersible pump, and the numerical calculation results of the original model are in good agreement with the experimental results. In this paper, five different impeller vane exit angles, namely 10°, 15°, 20°, 25° and 30°, are selected for numerical analysis based on the original model, and the flow conditions of 0.6 Q, 1.0 Q and 1.4 Q are analyzed for each angle. The results show that the impeller vane exit placement angle not only affects the static pressure distribution, velocity distribution and streamline distribution within the impeller and guide vane, but also has a significant effect on the head curve, power curve and efficiency curve of the well submersible pump. As the flow slip inside the impeller of high-speed well submersible pumps intensifies, the large impeller outlet angle will cause the power of the impeller to increase linearly with the flow rate, thus reducing the pump efficiency. In the low-flow and high-flow conditions, a small outlet angle of 10° will make the efficiency of high-speed submersible pumps higher than in other conditions, and these findings can provide some reference for the optimal design of high-speed submersible pumps. This paper proposed a simplified modeling approach for a power quality (PQ) assessment of Electric Submersible Pumps (ESP) systems supplied by the two-level, the neutral-point-clamped three-level, and the cascaded H-bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter VFD topologies. The VFD switching function models and their analytical expressions are proposed to understand how they can create high-frequency components that might excite the resonance mode in a transmission cable or a rotating shaft system. Voltage, current, and motor airgap torque harmonics induced by each VFD topology in a balanced operation mode are derived and correlated to the PWM carrier and motor operating frequencies. The motor airgap harmonics are calculated based on Concordia's transformation of voltages and currents in αβ-plan. These harmonic components are represented in the form of Campbell diagrams. An analysis of harmonics under unbalanced conditions was also conducted in a CHB VFD topology-powered ESP system with failed and bypassed cells. The investigated modulation technique is a neutral-shift PWM method that enables the system to operate balanced line-line voltages even if the line-neutral voltages are unbalanced. The effects of modifying the electrical spectrum using the neutral-shift PWM method on electrical and mechanical spectra are analyzed. The results of the Matlab/Simulink-based simulation show that the proposed full ESP system model is highly accurate in both normal and failure modes. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions and are graphically shown in the time and frequency domains for easy analysis. The detailed theoretical study of high-frequency signal gain, when a probe microwave signal is comparable to the AC pump electric field in a semiconductor superlattice, is presented. We identified conditions under which a doped superlattice biased by both DC and AC fields can generate or amplify high-frequency radiation composed of harmonics, half-harmonics, and fractional harmonics. Physical mechanisms behind the effects are discussed. It is revealed that in a general case, the amplification mechanism in superlattices is determined by the coexistence of both the phase-independent Bloch and phase-dependent parametric gain mechanisms. The interplay and contribution of these gain mechanisms can be adjusted by the sweeping AC pump strength and leveraging a proper phase between the pump and strong probe electric fields. Notably, a transition from the Bloch gain to the parametric gain, often naturally occurring as the amplitude of the amplified signal field grows, can facilitate an effective method of fractional harmonic generation in DC–AC-driven superlattices. The study also uncovers that the pure parametric generation of the fractional harmonics can be initiated via their ignition by switching the DC pump electric field. The findings open a promising avenue for the advancement of new miniature GHz–THz frequency generators, amplifiers, and dividers operating at room temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: An energy and environmental performance analysis of air-source and ground-source heat pump systems able to operate with traditional (R-410A) and alternative low-GWP (R-454B) refrigerants is conducted. The case study is composed of an existing residential single-family house, and the coupled HVAC system is modeled by means of the commercial software TRNSYS. The TEWI index is considered to evaluate the environmental impact of the heat pump systems. The results of the numerical simulations show a significant reduction in the overall greenhouse emissions of those systems in which R-454B is employed as a refrigerant. The European Parliament has imposed to reduce by 2030 whole HFC emissions by at least two-thirds with respect to 2014 levels. With the aim of contributing to determine the energy and environmental advantages of refrigerants alternative to R-410A, this paper reports the results of a numerical study focused on an HVAC system coupled to a residential building and based on a reversible electric heat pump. In particular, two heat pump typologies are considered: an air-source and a ground-source heat pump, both operating with the two refrigerants R-410A and R-454B. The environmental performance of the studied system is assessed by means of the TEWI (total equivalent warming impact) index. The adoption of R-454B involves a slight decrease (2–3%) in the overall annual energy performance of the system with respect to the use of R-410A. On the other hand, the working fluid R-454B guarantees a marked decrease in the TEWI indicator. Indeed, considering the current Italian emission factor of electricity taken from the grid, the total emissions over the entire heat pump operating life drop by about 25% and can decrease by up to 89% in perspective, following the current reduction trend of the emission factor. Two-color laser field-induced plasma filaments are efficient broadband terahertz (THz) sources with intense THz waves emitted mainly in the forward direction, and they have been investigated intensively. However, investigations on the backward emission from such THz sources are rather rare. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the backward THz wave radiation from a two-color laser field-induced plasma filament. In theory, a linear dipole array model predicts that the proportion of the backward emitted THz wave decreases with the length of the plasma filament. In our experiment, we obtain the typical waveform and spectrum of the backward THz radiation from a plasma with a length of about 5 mm. The dependence of the peak THz electric field on the pump laser pulse energy indicates that the THz generation processes of the forward and backward THz waves are essentially the same. As the laser pulse energy changes, there is a peak timing shift in the THz waveform, implying a plasma position change caused by the nonlinear-focusing effect. Our demonstration may find applications in THz imaging and remote sensing. This paper presents a fully-decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity and gas market for retailers and prosumers with coupled energy units, considering the uncertainties of wholesale electricity market price and prosumers' demand. The goal is to improve the overall economy of the proposed market while increasing its flexibility. In this market, the retailers are equipped with self-generation and energy storage units and can bilaterally negotiate for electricity and gas transactions with prosumers to maximize their profit. Furthermore, they can sell power to the upstream market in addition to prosumers. The prosumers have access to several retailers to supply their required electricity and gas and can freely provide their energy needs from every retailer, contributing to dynamicity in the proposed market. Given that they have an energy hub consisting of boiler units, combined heat and electricity (CHP) units, and electric pumps, they can switch their energy supply source from electricity to gas and vice versa. A robust possibilistic programming approach is applied to address the uncertainties. A fully-decentralized approach called the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is utilized to solve the presented decentralized robust problem. The proposed decentralized algorithm finds an optimum solution by establishing a smart balance between the average expected value, optimality robustness, and feasibility robustness. The feasibility and competitiveness of the proposed approach are evaluated through numerical studies on a distribution system with two retailers and three prosumers. The data analysis of the simulation results verifies the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized robust framework as well as the proposed decentralized solution. According to the maximum deviation, the expected optimal value in the robust case, the retailer's profit has decreased by 12.1 percent, and the prosumers' cost has increased by 27.4 percent due to the feasibility penalty term. District heating systems are gaining global recognition as an essential tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a low-carbon-energy future. In this context, heat pumps are becoming an important technology, providing an effective solution for improving energy efficiency and reducing the reliance on fossil fuels in heating systems. Therefore, this study is focused on the optimal selection of heat pump systems for different types of buildings considering technical, economic, environmental, and social factors. This paper proposes a novel methodology based on mixed-integer nonlinear programming and multi-objective optimization that minimizes total costs and reduces CO2 emissions for heat production and supply systems over a desired period. The methodology is applied to various building types, including renovated and unrenovated apartment buildings, schools, kindergartens, and a supermarket. The study analyzes various types of heat pumps and electric heaters for space heating and domestic hot water production. Optimization results showed that the optimal heating system includes air-to-water heat pumps and electric heaters. Furthermore, for schools and a supermarket, these systems are combined with hybrid heat pumps. The goal of making the heating system neutral in terms of CO2 emissions was achieved for eight out of eleven buildings analyzed. The most profitable investments were in the heating systems of renovated five-story and unrenovated nine-story apartment buildings due to their low energy costs (0.0831 EUR/kWh), short payback periods, and high returns on investment. Industry 4.0 technologies offer manufacturing companies numerous tools to enhance their core processes, including monitoring and control. To optimize efficiency, it is crucial to effectively install monitoring sensors. This paper proposes a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach as a practical solution to the sensor placement problem in the food industry, having been applied to wine bottling line equipment at a real Italian winery. The approach helps decision-makers when discriminating within a set of alternatives based on multiple criteria. By evaluating the interconnections within the different equipment, the ideal locations of sensors are suggested, with the goal of improving the process's performance. The results indicated that the system of electric pumps, corker, conveyor, and capper had the most influence on the other equipment which are then recommended for sensor control. Monitoring this equipment will result in the early discovery of failures, potentially also involving other dependant equipment, contributing to enhance the level of performance for the whole bottling line. The statistics of using downhole electric submersible pump (ESP) units in the oil fields of Eurasia show that hydroabrasive wear is a common cause of ESP emergency failures. The authors of this study theoretically and experimentally investigated the peculiarities of water–abrasive wear of ESP components. The research methodology and construction of the laboratory bench are described, and the results of experimental studies of determination of changes in the abrasivity index of impurity particles contained in the mixture pumped with the working stages of an ESP section are given. It is shown that large particles of mechanical impurities in contact with the metal of the working stages are subjected to intensive grinding of up to 0.25...0.3 mm; after that, particle size remains practically unchanged. An increased abrasiveness index of mechanical impurities causes an increase in the intensity of wear of interstage seals along the flow of a water–abrasive mixture (from the inlet to the outlet of the pumping section). Based on the obtained results, recommendations for selection of devices for formation-fluid cleaning during development and operation of oil wells are given. The impeller blades will continually strike the slurry mixture inside the pump, causing deterioration and a change in particle size. In this study, the degradation of mineral particles under various cycle times, rotational speeds, and flow rates is analyzed. The microscopic parameters of polymetallic nodules are calibrated by EDEM, and the transport of polymetallic nodules in the deep-sea lifting electric pump is simulated based on the coupled CFD-DEM solution of solid–liquid two-phase flow. The findings demonstrate that: the number of cycles through the pump has the greatest impact on particle degradation, and the number of fine particles significantly increases after the particles are impacted by the six-stage lifting electric pump several times; the higher the flow rate in the lifting electric pump, the faster the particles are dragged by the fluid, and the more easily the particles degrade; the faster the impeller speed of the lifting electric pump. Global natural gas resources are growing and are increasingly geographically diverse. A Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) is one of the most commonly used vessel types in the global ship fleet due to the possibility of storage, reloading to another ship, and regasifying it for re-injection into the natural gas grid. It is important to control system parameters for reliable technological processes such as tank hydrostatic pressure, vapor pressure, LNG density, LNG temperature, and phase changes between liquid and gas states. Additionally, pressure monitoring is important to control during transit in port and bunkering to prevent the pressure in the tanks from exceeding the tank design pressure. In this research study, a comprehensive hydrodynamic model for an LNG storage tank in a real-life regasification terminal (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit, LNG Terminal of Klaipeda City, Lithuania), operating in transportation mode to the regasification unit, was created. For this research, LNG is investigated as a compressible liquid and the speed of sound in LNG is evaluated. A complex mathematical model of the system allows the analysis of high-speed hydrodynamic and dynamic processes at cryogenic temperature (110 K) and evaluates the geometric parameters (tank geometry, electric motors and pumps, pipe geometric parameters, and roughness of internal surfaces) and the characteristics of pumps and electric motors. The complex mathematical model of the system was implemented using Fortran programing language and MATLAB R28a. It determined the parameters (pressure, velocity, liquid level of LNG in the tanks, electric motor angular velocity, torques, hydraulic energy losses, etc.) of the system during its start-up mode (until 5 s). It was found that hydraulic energy losses in all pipes contain 1.7% of the whole system power (the total power of the electric motors is 3132 kW). One way to efficiently control the fuel flow of small turbojet engines is to use direct control of the speed of a suitable electric fuel pump, as opposed to using relief valves. Brushless drive electric (BLDC) motors are suitable for this application, especially for small turbojet engines. This, however, comes with certain problems, which are caused by the backpressure of the engine on the fuel system, delays in data acquisition, sensor noise and so on. This paper presents a comprehensive approach in the methodological design of a dynamic model of a fuel system with a BLDC fuel/oil pump and control algorithms, which can overcome the mentioned problems. Three approaches are evaluated to obtain a stable and precise fuel metering of the engine. This article describes the design of an inverse control model, a standard PID controller and an adaptive fuzzy controller for fuel-flow control during engine operation. The main scientific contribution of the presented study is a simple, yet robust, fuzzy adaptive controller with a lean and comprehensive rule base that can precisely and efficiently meter fuel for small turbojet engines, validated in laboratory conditions using the iSTC-21v turbojet engine. Heat pumps with water as heat exchange medium applied in greenhouse heating have not been used for vegetable seedling cultivation. In this work, a multi-connected direct expansion capillary radiation heat pump (MDCRHP) was designed for vegetable seedling cultivation, and a closed local temperature control (CLTC) method was proposed to accurately control air and substrate temperatures in seedling beds, enhance the heating effect and reduce the equipment cost. The results show that the CLTC method can achieve good heating effect and quickly raise air/substrate temperature at a speed of 1 °C/min from 8 °C to about 20 °C within 12 min. The air and substrate temperature fields in the seedling beds were evenly distributed. The temperature differences at different horizontal positions and different heights were less than 1 °C, and the relative humidity was 100%, which is conducive to vegetable grafting seedling. It can be concluded from test results that the MDCRHP had strong adaptability for greenhouse heating and was obviously superior to the electric heating wire (EWH). The output capacity of the compressor can be controlled by adjusting the operation frequency to meet the temperature requirements at different stages of seedling cultivation. Under the conditions of similar external ambient temperature and heating effect in the seedling beds, the energy saving rate of the MDCRHP was 47–50.7% compared with the EWH. Hydraulic systems are widely used in industry due to their small size-to-power ratios and their ability to produce very large linear force and torque. In traditional hydraulic systems, a variable pump driven by an electric motor is often used as power source. In these systems, the electro-hydraulic power source always operates at its rated speed, causing lots of noise and low energy consumption, especially in no-load and light-load conditions. These problems can be solved by changing the speed of the electric motor according to the load state of the electro-hydraulic power source. In order to improve the energy efficiency of the electro-hydraulic power source and realize pressure and flow control on the basis of low cost, this paper presents the power-source structure of a variable-displacement pressure-compensated pump driven by a variable-speed electric motor; this controls the flow by adjusting the electric motor speed and controls the pressure with the variable-displacement pressure-compensated pump. However, for the variable-speed system, the starting of the electric motor with a load is relatively slow; this makes it difficult to meet the demand of flow control, and will also have a great impact on the power grid. To address these problems, a hydraulic accumulator is introduced to the inlet port of the hydraulic pump to assist in starting the pump. This method can realize the combined control of pressure, flow and power, and has high energy efficiency. This research uses experiments to verify the feasibility of the scheme, and the results show that the starting periods of the power source can be shortened from 2.8 s to 0.7 s when the load pressure is about 18 MPa. Furthermore, regarding maintaining pressure without flow outputs, the energy consumption of the designed power source can be reduced by almost 30% compared with a pure variable-displacement power source. In modern aircraft engine technology, there is a tendency to replace the mechanical drive of external gear fuel pumps with an electric one. This significantly reduces the integral energy consumption for pumping fuel (kerosene). On the other hand, in order to reduce the dimensions of the structure, it is reasonable to increase the rotation speed of the pumping unit gears. The above considerations make it advisable to study the problems that may arise in the design of pumping units. Analysis of the existing designs of external gear fuel pumps shows that the flow processes in the meshing zone have a significant impact on the pump performance and lifetime. Incorrect truss plate geometry and the compensation system lead to an increase in the velocities when opening and closing the cavity in the meshing zone, which causes intense cavitation. To understand the causes and factors which influence this phenomenon, it is necessary to study the fluid flow behavior in the meshing zone gaps. High-speed cameras are used to experimentally study the flow behavior. However, this approach gives only a qualitative result but does not allow for determining the absolute values of pressure and load in terms of the angle of rotation. Nevertheless, high-speed surveying can be used as a basis for fluid flow model verification. In this paper, the model of the fluid flow in a high-pressure external gear pump was proposed. The verification of the simulation results for HDZ 46 HLP 68 oil operation was carried out according to the results of experimental data visualization. The influence of rotation speed on the position of cavitation zones was revealed and confirmed by operational data. Featured Application: The presented results can be applied to the electric pump propulsion system of a rocket engine. Liquid rocket engines (LREs) are essential power sources for access to space. Electric pump feed systems have received noteworthy attention because of their high efficiency, convenient regulation, and simple structure. In this study, an oxidant feed system with two pumps in parallel was established. The centralized parameter method and the distributed parameter method were used for modeling. The dynamic characteristics of different starting schemes and regulating schemes were obtained. The results show that the asynchronous opening of two pumps led to a pressure peak from the second stage to the third stage. Under the low operating conditions, the pump speed of the asynchronous scheme was about 13,300 r/min, the pump speed of the synchronous scheme was about 12,100 r/min, and the pump speed of the joint adjustment scheme was about 24,800 r/min. The joint adjustment of pump speed and valve opening could increase the pump speed by a factor of one-third, while maintaining the efficiency at a high level. The optimal scheme could be selected according to a genetic algorithm-based calculation process, together with the curves of the flow rate and pressure with pump speed and valve opening. Developing modern products involves numerous domains (controlling, production, engineering, etc.) and disciplines (mechanics, electronics, software, etc.). The products have become increasingly complex while their time to market has decreased. These challenges can be overcome by Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), where all development data (requirements, architecture, etc.) is stored and linked in a system model. In an MBSE system model, product requirements at the system level can lead to numerous technical variants with conflicting objectives at the parameter level. To determine the best technical variants or tradeoffs, Multidisciplinary Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) is already being used today. Linking MBSE and MDAO allows for mutually beneficial synergies to be expected that have not yet been fully exploited. In this paper, a new approach to link MBSE and MDAO is proposed. The novelty compared to existing approaches is the reuse of existing MBSE system model data. Models developed during upstream design and test activities already linked to the MBSE system model were integrated into an MDAO problem. Benefits are reduced initial and reconfiguration efforts and the resolution of the MDAO black-box behavior. For the first time, the MDAO problem was modeled as a workflow using activity diagrams in the MBSE system model. For a given system architecture, this workflow finds the design variable values that allow for the best tradeoff of objectives. The structure and behavior of the workflow were formally described in the MBSE system model with SysML. More than half of the world's population live in cities, and by 2050, it is expected that this proportion will reach almost 68%. These densely populated cities consume more than 75% of the world's primary energy and are responsible for the emission of around 70% of anthropogenic carbon. Providing sustainable energy for the growing demand in cities requires multifaceted planning approach. In this study, we modeled the energy system of the Greater Montreal region to evaluate the impact of different environmental mitigation policies on the energy system of this region over a long-term period (2020–2050). In doing so, we have used the open-source optimization-based model called the Energy–Technology–Environment Model (ETEM). The ETEM is a long-term bottom–up energy model that provides insight into the best options for cities to procure energy, and satisfies useful demands while reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Results show that, under a deep decarbonization scenario, the transportation, commercial, and residential sectors will contribute to emission reduction by 6.9, 1.6, and 1 million ton CO2-eq in 2050, respectively, compared with their 2020 levels. This is mainly achieved by (i) replacing fossil fuel cars with electric-based vehicles in private and public transportation sectors; (ii) replacing fossil fuel furnaces with electric heat pumps to satisfy heating demand in buildings; and (iii) improving the efficiency of buildings by isolating walls and roofs. This paper studied the constraint mechanism for power device design based on perovskite quantum dots pumped by an electron beam. Combined with device designing, an experimental system of self-saturation luminescence and aging failure was designed for CsPbBr3 films. On this basis, we further completed the self-saturation luminescence and aging failure experiment and constructed a model of self-saturation luminescence and aging failure for CsPbBr3 device designing. Three constraints were proposed after analyzing and discussing the experimental data. Firstly, too high of a pumping current density makes it difficult to effectively promote the enhancement of luminescence efficiency. Secondly, radiation decomposition and aging failure of CsPbBr3 films are mainly related to the polarized degree of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. Thirdly, by increasing the pumping electric field, the pumping energy can be effectively and widely delivered to the three-dimensional quantum dots film layer space, and there is a nonlinear relationship between the attenuation of the pumping energy density and the increment of the pumping electric field, which will effectively avoid the local high-energy density of instantaneous optical pumping. This concept study extends the power-to-gas approach to small combined heat and power devices in buildings that alternately operate fuel cells and electrolysis. While the heat is used to replace existing fossil heaters on-site, the power is either fed into the grid or consumed via heat-coupled electrolysis to balance the grid power at the nearest grid node. In detail, the power demand of Germany is simulated as a snapshot for 2030 with 100% renewable sourcing. The standard load profile is supplemented with additional loads from 100% electric heat pumps, 100% electric cars, and a fully electrified industry. The renewable power is then scaled up to match this demand with historic hourly yield data from 2018/2019. An optimal mix of photovoltaics, wind, biomass and hydropower is calculated in respect to estimated costs in 2030. Hydrogen has recently entered a large number of national energy roadmaps worldwide. However, most of them address the demands of heavy industry and heavy transport, which are more difficult to electrify. Hydrogen is understood to be a substitute for fossil fuels, which would be continuously imported from non-industrialized countries. This paper focuses on hydrogen as a storage technology in an all-electric system. The target is to model the most cost-effective end-to-end use of local renewable energies, including excess hydrogen for the industry. The on-site heat coupling will be the principal argument for decentralisation. Essentially, it flattens the future peak from massive usage of electric heat pumps during cold periods. However, transition speed will either push the industry or the prosumer approach in front. Batteries are tried out as supplementary components for short-term storage, due to their higher round trip efficiencies. Switching the gas net to hydrogen is considered as an alternative to overcome the slow power grid expansions. Further decentral measures are examined in respect to system costs. Oil production is a complex technological process that requires significant electricity consumption. The main electricity consumers in oil and gas production workshops are artificial lift facilities. Currently, among the objects of mechanized mining, installations of electric submersible pumps are widespread. When planning technological modes, it is necessary to be able to assess the change in the power consumption parameters when changing the technological process parameters. The paper proposes a typical replacement scheme for the electrical complex element. The power consumption calculation of electric submersible pump installations has been carried out. The error in the power consumption modeling results of electric submersible pump installations in comparison with the results of instrumental measurements is no more than 10%. The estimation of additional losses of electric energy caused by the influence of harmonics is carried out. The proposed technique makes it possible to estimate the power consumption of an electric submersible pump installation when changing the parameters of the technological process and equipment. The results of the work can be used for planning material support and optimization of warehouse stocks within the framework of integrated logistics support for the technological process of industrial enterprises. Featured Application: This work can be applied in monitoring and predicting ESP failure when it operates in high gas well condition. It can be used to interpret the downhole ESP data such as pump intake pressure (PIP) and pump discharge pressure (Pdis) to diagnose ESP abnormalities related to the multiphase condition. It highlights the importance of using nodal analysis software (e.g., Schlumberger PIPESIM software) to evaluate the ESP operating condition before and after installation. It is strictly applied in the field where gas lock is a major source of the ESP abnormality. Electrical submersible pump (ESP) operation is compromised by free gas, resulting in premature pump failure and production losses in new wells. It is essential to detect the onset of abnormal operations. We develop a model that predicts abnormal ESP operation when the free gas level increases in the pump. The model compares operation parameters with the parameters of normal operating ranges; it shuts down the ESP when necessary. We used a Schlumberger PIPESIM software (version 2017.01) to perform nodal analysis technique; we tested the model using the other multiphase correlation model and field case studies (where the gas problem in ESP was reported). We employ a homogenous model to calculate the differential pump pressures at various gas volume fractions. Nodal analysis of the intake and discharge point predicted the commencement of abnormal ESP conditions and the associated parameters (critical gas fraction, minimum operating pump intake pressure, and pump discharge pressure). The model results were similar to other surging correlation models (e.g., Romero, Dunbar, Turpin, Cirilo, and Zhou models); they were also identical to field case studies. We identify three performance stability phases when an ESP is exposed to free gas. These are the normal and abnormal operating ranges, as well as the ESP shutdown condition. The main principles of hydroabrasive wear of parts of the pumping stages of well's electric submersible pumps are considered in this article. The concentration, grain-size distribution and shape of solid particles have the greatest impact on the abrasion ability of particles of mechanical impurities interacting with the parts of pumping equipment. The implementation of filters is the most effective and affordable way to protect borehole electric submersible pumps from hydroabrasive wear. Filters reduce the concentration and decrease the average grain-size of mechanical impurities going through the pumping stages. The authors propose variants of constructive and schematic solutions of self-cleaning slot filters, providing an increase in the operating time of electric centrifugal pump units during production of well fluid with a high content of mechanical impurities. The operating principle of the proposed filters is described. The results of calculations of deformation of tubing string during the increase in pressure at the oil wellhead are presented, confirming the possibility of restoring the permeability of spring filter elements without lifting the pump unit to the surface. The subject of the present study is the reproduction of a submersible electric pump impeller through reverse engineering and additive manufacturing. All of the phases commonly envisaged in the reproduction of an existing piece were carried out. The aim of the study is to show how the chosen pump component can be effectively re-engineered and produced with the selective laser melting technique, obtaining a final product that is comparable if not even better than the starting one. To achieve this goal, the original piece was redesigned and a new model was created and analyzed. The whole process has been split into three main phases: (i) realization of the three-dimensional model from an existing piece using reverse engineering techniques; (ii) finite element analysis for the optimization of the use of the material; and (iii) 3D printing of a concept model in polyethylene terephthalate by using the fused deposition modeling technology and of the functional model in AISI 316 stainless steel with selective laser melting technology. This study assesses the electric current parameters and reports on the analysis of the associated degree of myocardial function during left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support. An assumption is made that there is a correlation between cardiac output and the pulsatility index of the pump electric current. The experimental study is carried out using the ViVitro Pulse Duplicator System with Sputnik LVAD connected. Cardiac output and cardiac power output are used as a measure of myocardial function. Different heart rates (59, 73, 86 bpm) and pump speeds (7600–8400 rpm in 200 rpm steps) are investigated. In our methodology, ventricular stroke volumes in the range of 30–80 mL for each heart rate at a certain pump speed were used to simulate different levels of contractility. The correlation of the two measures of myocardial function and proposed pulsatility index was confirmed using different correlation coefficients (values ≥ 0.91). Linear and quadratic models for cardiac output and cardiac power output versus pulsatility index were obtained using regression analysis of measured data. Coefficients of determination for CO and CPO models were in the ranges of 0.914–0.982 and 0.817–0.993, respectively. Study findings suggest that appropriate interpretation of parameters could potentially serve as a valuable clinical tool to assess myocardial therapy using LVAD infrastructure. Energy conservation and emission reduction of construction machinery are the focus of current research. The traditional excavator, whose hydraulic pump is driven by the engine, has high fuel consumption and emissions. Furthermore, it is difficult to match the working point of the engine to that of the hydraulic pump. Current pure electric drive technology has the advantages of zero pollution and low noise, and the motor used has the advantages of fast response and a wide speed range. Based on the characteristics of the pure electric drive technology, a positive flow system based on variable speed constant displacement instead of a variable displacement pump for pure electric construction machinery is put forward to realize the flow-matching of the whole machine. The basic structure and working principle were introduced. The control process was analyzed. The controllability and energy saving of the proposed system were tested through simulation and experimental analysis. The research results showed that the controllability of the proposed positive flow system was comparable to that of the traditional throttling speed-regulating control system. The energy-saving efficiency of the proposed positive flow system is increased by 35.2% compared to that of the tradition control system. To further exploit the strong overload capacity of electric motors of electric construction machinery and solve the insufficient power under sudden load, research on constant power control will be carried out in the future. Featured Application: The presented results can be used to assess the energy-saving potential of general purpose and industrial electric motors of various types in various applications of electric drives. The paper presents a comparative analysis of energy consumption by 2.2 kW electric motors of various types and energy efficiency classes in the electric drive of a pump unit with throttle control in a water supply system. Line-start permanent-magnet synchronous motors of the IE4 energy efficiency class and induction motors of the IE4 and IE3 energy efficiency classes of various manufacturers were considered (IE4 and IE3 are labels of energy efficiency classes of electric motors according to IEC 60034-30-1 standard). Energy consumption at a hydraulic load changing under a typical duty cycle was calculated based on the nameplate data of the pump and electric motors. The developed method shows that selecting an electric motor based on the IE energy efficiency class under the IEC 60034-30-1 standard (i.e., based on efficiency at a rated load) may not provide the minimum energy consumption of a variable flow pump unit over a typical duty cycle. In particular, the considered IE4 class line-start permanent-magnet synchronous motors do not provide significant advantages over IE4 class induction motors, and sometimes even over IE3 class induction motors when they are used in variable flow pump units. District heating networks are considered as convenient systems to supply heat to consumers while reducing CO2 emissions and increasing renewable energies use. However, to make them as profitable as possible, they have to be developed, operated and sized carefully. In order to cope with these objectives, simulation tools are required to analyze several configuration schemes and control methods. Indeed, the most common problems are heat losses, the electric pump consumption and the peak heat demand while ensuring the comfort of the users. In this contribution, a dynamic simulation model of all the components of the network is described. It is dedicated to assess some energetic, environmental and economic indicators. Finally, the methodology is used on an existing application test case namely the district heating network of the University of Liège to study the pump control and minimize the district heating network heat losses. Deep geothermal energy systems employ electric submersible pumps (ESPs) in order to lift geothermal fluid from the production well to the surface. However, rough downhole conditions and high flow rates impose heavy strain on the components, leading to frequent failures of the pump system. As downhole sensor data is limited and often unrealible, a detailed and dynamical model system will serve as basis for deeper understanding and analysis of the overall system behavior. Furthermore, it allows to design model-based condition monitoring and fault detection systems, and to improve controls leading to a more robust and efficient operation. In this paper, a detailed state-space model of the complete ESP system is derived, covering the electrical, mechanical and hydraulic subsystems. Based on the derived model, the start-up phase of an exemplary yet realistic ESP system in the Megawatt range--located at a setting depth of 950m and producing geothermal fluid of 140 °C temperature at a rate of 0.145m³ s-1--is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation results show that the system reaches a stable operating point with realistic values. Furthermore, the effect of self-excitation between the filter capacitor and the motor inductor can clearly be observed. This paper provides an illustrated description of a proposed LiBr-H2O vapour absorption refrigerator which uses a thermally activated solution pumping mechanism that combines controlled variations in generator vapour pressure with changes it produces in static-head pressure difference to circulate the absorbent solution between the generator and absorber vessels. The proposed system is different and potentially more efficient than a bubble pump system previously proposed and avoids the need for an electrically powered circulation pump found in most conventional LiBr absorption refrigerators. The paper goes on to provide a sample set of calculations that show that the coefficient of performance values of the proposed cycle are similar to those found for conventional cycles. The theoretical results compare favourably with some preliminary experimental results, which are also presented for the first time in this paper. This work focuses on the modeling and simulation of constant pressure systems based on variable speed pumps, with the aim of studying and evaluating their performance from a multidisciplinary approach. Using the physical models of the Simscape library, from MATLAB/Simulink R2019b, two study cases are assembled consisting of: piping system, a hydropneumatic tank, centrifugal pumps with an induction motor, variable speed drives, and a control system. Case one is comprised of one pump at a fixed speed and another at variable speed, and case two with both pumps at variable speed. For the parameterization of the models, data from manufacturers and process requirements are used. The different stages of the control system are integrated and configured; these are constant V/f control, slip compensation, space vector modulation (SVM,) and pressure controller. The dynamic response of the system, power saving, transient current at startup, and harmonic distortion are evaluated. The results showed that both cases kept the pressure constant in the face of variable flow demand and smoothed out the current during startup. Case two saved more energy (between 28 and 49%) but generated more harmonic distortion. In addition, both cases have better performance compared with traditional fixed-speed technologies. A speed-sensorless state-feedback controller for induction machines (IMs) with LC filter is proposed. The speed and state estimation is based on a speed-adaptive observer, requiring only the measurement of the filter input currents. The motor currents are controlled by a state-feedback controller with prefilter and integral control action, in order to achieve fast and asymptotic set point tracking. Observer and controller gains are calculated offline using linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory and updated online (gain-scheduling) in order to attain stability and improve controller performance in the whole operation range. Implementation aspects, such as discretization of the control system and reduction of computational effort, are taken into account as well. The proposed control scheme is validated by simulations and experimental results, even for critical operating conditions such as speed zero-crossings. It is shown that the overall control system performs very well under various load- and speed conditions; while its tuning remains simple which makes it attractive for industrial application such as geothermal electric submersible pumping (ESP) systems.
