The manuscript was prepared to conduct a thorough analysis and deepen the understanding of sustainable food production and diets within the context of the challenges posed by intensive agricultural practices and their environmental impacts, as well as their effects on human health. The rapid growth of the human population necessitates an increase in food production to meet nutritional needs. However, increasing the production of animal-derived products, which are significant protein sources, is likely to worsen undesirable consequences, such as global climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and a larger carbon footprint. Traditional farming techniques also contribute to environmental contamination due to the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Transitioning to a sustainable food production model that addresses food needs while protecting consumer health and the environment is crucial. The challenge for the food industry and research centers is to find and develop the production of alternative sources of protein. In addition to the technological problems that must be solved, there is consumer education focused on healthy eating and overcoming psychological barriers related to the consumption of new foods. Globally, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a major threat to the public's health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) by the gut microbiota has been reported to have the potential to reduce the prevalence of T2DM, particularly in LMICs where the disease is becoming more common. Dietary fibers are the primary source of SCFAs; they can be categorized as soluble (such as pectin and inulin) or insoluble (such as resistant starches). Increased consumption of processed carbohydrates, in conjunction with insufficient consumption of dietary fiber, has been identified as a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, there are still controversies over the therapeutic advantages of SCFAs on human glucose homeostasis, due to a lack of studies in this area. Hence, a few questions need to be addressed to gain a better understanding of the beneficial link between SCFAs and glucose metabolism. These include the following: What are the biochemistry and biosynthesis of SCFAs? What role do SCFAs play in the pathology of T2DM? What is the most cost-effective strategy that can be employed by LMICs with limited laboratory resources to enhance their understanding of the beneficial function of SCFAs in patients with T2DM? To address the aforementioned questions, this paper aims to review the existing literature on the protective roles that SCFAs have in patients with T2DM. This paper further discusses possible cost-effective and accurate strategies to quantify SCFAs, which may be recommended for implementation by LMICs as preventive measures to lower the risk of T2DM. Antimicrobial resistance poses a major threat to global health as the number of efficient antimicrobials decreases and the number of resistant pathogens rises. Our research group has been actively involved in the design of novel antimicrobial drugs. The blueprints of these compounds were azolic heterocycles, particularly thiazole. Starting with oxadiazolines, our research group explored, one by one, the other five-membered heterocycles, developing more or less potent compounds. An overview of this research activity conducted by our research group allowed us to observe an evolution in the methodology used (from inhibition zone diameters to minimal inhibitory concentrations and antibiofilm potential determination) correlated with the design of azole compounds based on results obtained from molecular modeling. The purpose of this review is to present the development of in-house azole compounds with antimicrobial activity, designed over the years by this research group from the departments of Pharmaceutical and Therapeutical Chemistry in Cluj-Napoca. Various industrial activities release heavy metal ions into the environment, which represent one of the major toxic pollutants owing to their severe effects on the environment, humans, and all living species. Despite several technological advances and breakthroughs, wastewater treatment remains a critical global issue. Traditional techniques are dedicated to extracting heavy metal ions from diverse wastewater origins, encompassing coagulation/flocculation, precipitation, flotation, and ion exchange. Their cost, side toxicity, or ineffectiveness often limit their large-scale use. Due to their adaptable design, simple operation, and reasonable cost, membrane filtration and adsorption have proven their efficiency in removing metals from wastewater. Recently, adsorption-based filters have appeared promising in treating water. Within this range, filters incorporating natural, synthetic, or hybrid adsorbents present an appealing alternative to conventional approaches. This review aims to list and describe the conventional and advanced wastewater treatment methods by comparing their efficiency, cost, and environmental impact. The primary objective of this investigation was to assess the influence of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) and the duration of cold storage on the physicochemical, technological, and sensory attributes as well as the nutritional composition and shelf life of meat. The experimental framework involved utilizing samples derived from the semimembranosus muscle of pork. Each muscle obtained from the same carcass was segmented into six distinct parts, with three designated as control specimens (K) and the remaining subjected to vacuum packaging and subsequent exposure to high hydrostatic pressure (200 MPa at 20 °C for 30 min). Comprehensive laboratory analyses of the meat were conducted at 1, 7, and 10 days post slaughter. The meat was cold-stored at +3 ± 0.5 °C. The findings of the study elucidated that the application of high hydrostatic pressure exhibited a favorable impact on the extension of the raw meat's shelf life. The tests showed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the total number of microorganisms compared to the control sample after 7 (K: 4.09 × 105, HHP: 2.88 × 105 CFU/g) and 10 (K: 7.40 × 105, HHP: 2.42 × 105 CFU/g) days of cold storage. It was also found that using HHP increased the pH value after 1 (K: 5.54, HHP: 5.77) and 7 (K: 5.60, HHP: 5.87) days of storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The oral cavity's soft and hard tissues create a conducive environment for microbial proliferation and biofilm development, facilitating the colonization of prosthodontic and implant materials such as titanium (Ti) and zirconia (Zr). This study aimed to compare the efficacy of conventional decontamination methodologies (i.e., chemical and mechanical, using 0.12% digluconate chlorhexidine (CHX) solution-treatment and airflow) to adjunctive laser-based interventions on Ti and Zr substrates inoculated with Staphylococcus (S.) aureus ATCC 25923. Additionally, this investigation sought to elucidate the impact of these treatments on temperature variations and surface integrity, analyzing the laser irradiation effects on these prevalent dental materials. Experimental configurations were delineated for both Ti and Zr samples across four groups: (1) a conventional treatment group (CV); (2) a photodynamic therapy group (PDT); (3) an Er:YAG laser treatment group (Er); (4) a combined PDT and Er:YAG treatment group (PDTEr). Also, a negative control group (C) that received no treatment was considered. The decontamination of the inoculated disc samples was evaluated by quantifying the microbial colonies in colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL). Temperature variations on the surface of the samples were determined during laser treatments. Surface modifications were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). For statistical analysis, Fisher 95% confidence intervals, Hsu's MCB method, and the Kruskal–Wallis test were applied. With regard to the 105 CFU/mL of the negative control group, results indicated average values equal for each study group to (1) 2.66 CFU/mL for Ti and 2 CFU/mL for Zr for the CV group; (2) 0.33 CFU/mL for Ti and 1 CFU/mL for Zr for the PDT group; (3) 1.25 CFU/mL for Ti and 0 CFU/mL for Zr for the Er group; (4), and 0 CFU/mL for both Ti and Zr for the PDTEr group. Therefore, the combined PDT and Er:YAG treatment (PDTEr) and the singular PDT modality outperformed conventional decontamination methods in eradicating S. aureus biofilms from both Ti and Zr surfaces. Notably, the PDTEr regime achieved a comprehensive elimination of microbial colonies on treated substrates. Surface examination employing OCT demonstrated discernible alterations in the surface morphology of samples subjected to Er:YAG and combined PDT and Er:YAG treatments. Temperature checks during treatments showed no major changes, suggesting the applied laser methods are safe. In conclusion, PDTEr and PDT eliminated bacteria more effectively, but Zr surfaces were more resilient, making them better for microbe-controlling applications. Background and Objectives: Dentigerous cysts are one of the most frequent pathologies associated with unerupted or impacted teeth. Such cysts show a male predilection and a preference for the mandibular region. Also, they commonly occur in the second and third decades of life, with only 9% occurring in the first decade. The aim of this work is to apply and study the therapeutic algorithms developed for dentigerous cysts and their outcomes, from the early diagnostic stage to the complete healing phase of pediatric patients diagnosed with this medical condition. Materials and Methods: The study included 19 pediatric patients diagnosed with dentigerous cysts who underwent the enucleation and extraction or conservative attitude of the associated tooth. The bony healing was also followed-up 9 months after the surgery. Results: A higher incidence in the posterior area of the mandible and maxilla was observed, as well as a higher incidence in boys. The 9 months postoperative radiographic assessment showed that the bony defects were completely healed. Conclusions: A thorough understanding of the nature of the lesion backed by a good clinical history and by state-of-the-art radiographic and radiologic examinations can go a long way in helping the surgeon to choose the correct therapeutic approach and to ameliorate the medical condition in the best long-term interest of the young patient. Bone formation is a complex process regulated by a variety of pathways that are not yet fully understood. One of the proteins involved in multiple osteogenic pathways is TID (DNAJA3). The aim of this work was to study the association of TID with osteogenesis. Therefore, the expression profiles of the TID splice variants (TID-L, TID-I) and their protein products were analyzed during the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (B-MSCs) into osteoblasts. As the reference, the hFOB1.19 cell line was used. The phenotype of B-MSCs was confirmed by the presence of CD73, CD90, and CD105 surface antigens on ~97% of cells. The osteoblast phenotype was confirmed by increased alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium deposition, and expression of ALPL and SPP1. The effect of silencing the TID gene on the expression of ALPL and SPP1 was also investigated. The TID proteins and the expression of TID splice variants were detected. After differentiation, the expression of TID-L and TID-I increased 5-fold and 3.7-fold, respectively, while their silencing resulted in increased expression of SPP1. Three days after transfection, the expression of SPP1 increased 7.6-fold and 5.6-fold in B-MSCs and differentiating cells, respectively. Our preliminary study demonstrated that the expression of TID-L and TID-I changes under differentiation of B-MSCs into osteoblasts and may influence the expression of SPP1. Driven by concerns over polluted industrial wastewater, particularly heavy metals and dyes, this study explores biosorption using chemically cross-link chitosan derivatives as a sustainable and cost-effective depollution method. Chitosan cross-linking employs either water-soluble polymers and agents like glutaraldehyde or copolymerization of hydrophilic monomers with a cross-linker. Chemical cross-linking of polymers has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the wet-strength properties of materials. The chitosan thus extracted, as powder or gel, was used to adsorb heavy metals (lead (Pb2+) and copper (Cu2+)) and dyes (methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV)). Extensive analysis of the physicochemical properties of both the powder and hydrogel adsorbents was conducted using a range of analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). To gain a comprehensive understanding of the sorption process, the effect of contact time, pH, concentration, and temperature was investigated. The adsorption capacity of chitosan powder for Cu(II), Pb(II), methylene blue (MB), and crystal violet (CV) was subsequently determined as follows: 99, 75, 98, and 80%, respectively. In addition, the adsorption capacity of chitosan hydrogel for Cu(II), Pb(II), MB, and CV was as follows: 85, 95, 85, and 98%, respectively. The experimental data obtained were analyzed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. The isotherm study revealed that the adsorption equilibrium is well fitted to the Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.998), and the sorption capacity of both chitosan powder and hydrogel was found to be exceptionally high (approximately 98%) with the adsorbent favoring multilayer adsorption. The recent scientific literature abounds in proposals of seizure forecasting methods that exploit machine learning to automatically analyze electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Deep learning algorithms seem to achieve a particularly remarkable performance, suggesting that the implementation of clinical devices for seizure prediction might be within reach. However, most of the research evaluated the robustness of automatic forecasting methods through randomized cross-validation techniques, while clinical applications require much more stringent validation based on patient-independent testing. In this study, we show that automatic seizure forecasting can be performed, to some extent, even on independent patients who have never been seen during the training phase, thanks to the implementation of a simple calibration pipeline that can fine-tune deep learning models, even on a single epileptic event recorded from a new patient. We evaluate our calibration procedure using two datasets containing EEG signals recorded from a large cohort of epileptic subjects, demonstrating that the forecast accuracy of deep learning methods can increase on average by more than 20%, and that performance improves systematically in all independent patients. We further show that our calibration procedure works best for deep learning models, but can also be successfully applied to machine learning algorithms based on engineered signal features. Although our method still requires at least one epileptic event per patient to calibrate the forecasting model, we conclude that focusing on realistic validation methods allows to more reliably compare different machine learning approaches for seizure prediction, enabling the implementation of robust and effective forecasting systems that can be used in daily healthcare practice. Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) poses a significant threat to food safety due to its ability to cause severe human illness and its resistance to various antibiotics and environmental conditions. This study investigated the prevalence, serotype distribution, virulence gene profiles, and antimicrobial resistance patterns of L. monocytogenes in ready-to-eat (RTE) food products from Romania. A total of 8151 samples were analyzed, including various processed dairy, bovine, poultry, pork, and fish products. Bacterial isolation was conducted using the classical standard method, followed by confirmation through biochemical and molecular testing. Among the isolated strains, serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b, and 1/2c were identified, with a prevalence of 75% for serotype 1/2a. Additionally, virulence genes specific to listeriolysin O (hlyA) and regulatory factor A (prfA) were detected in all isolates. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed varying resistance patterns among the L. monocytogenes strains. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and oxacillin showed the highest prevalence of resistance at 26.92% and 23.07%, respectively. However, all strains remained susceptible to ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and moxifloxacin. Notably, 23.07% of the isolates exhibited multidrug resistance, with the most common pattern being resistance to oxacillin, penicillin, and tetracycline. Analysis of antimicrobial resistance genes identified tetracycline resistance genes, particularly tet(C), tet(M), and tet(K), in a significant proportion of isolates. The presence of ampC and dfrD genes was also notable, indicating potential mechanisms of resistance. These results emphasize the necessity for ongoing surveillance of L. monocytogenes in RTE foods and emphasize the importance of thorough monitoring of antimicrobial resistance to guide public health strategies within the European Union. Background: MicroRNA (miRNA) have the potential to be non-invasive and attractive biomarkers for a vast number of diseases and clinical conditions; however, a reliable analysis of miRNA expression in blood samples meets a number of methodological challenges. In this report, we presented and discussed, specifically, the principles and limitations of miRNA purification and analysis in blood plasma samples collected from the left atrium during an ablation procedure on patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Materials and Methods: Consecutive patients hospitalized in the First Department of Cardiology for pulmonary vein ablation were included in this study (11 with diagnosed paroxysmal AF, 14 with persistent AF, and 5 without AF hospitalized for left-sided WPW ablation—control group). Whole blood samples were collected from the left atrium after transseptal puncture during the ablation procedure of AF patients. Analysis of the set of miRNA molecules was performed in blood plasma samples using the MIHS-113ZF-12 kit and miScript microRNA PCR Array Human Cardiovascular Disease. Results: The miRNS concentrations were in the following ranges: paroxysmal AF: 7–23.1 ng/µL; persistent AF: 4.9–66.8 ng/µL; controls: 6.3–10.6 ng/µL. The low A260/280 ratio indicated the protein contamination and the low A260/A230 absorbance ratio suggested the contamination by hydrocarbons. Spectrophotometric measurements also indicated low concentration of nucleic acids (<10 ng/µL). Further steps of analysis revealed that the concentration of cDNA after the Real-Time PCR (using the PAXgene RNA Blood kit) reaction was higher (148.8 ng/µL vs. 68.4 ng/µL) and the obtained absorbance ratios (A260/A280 = 2.24 and A260/A230 = 2.23) indicated adequate RNA purity. Conclusions: Although developments in miRNA sequencing and isolation technology have improved, detection of plasma-based miRNA, low RNA content, and sequencing bias introduced during library preparation remain challenging in patients with AF. The impression materials utilized today in dental medicine offer a good reproducibility and are easily accepted by patients. However, because they are polymer-based, they have issues regarding their dimensional stability. In this respect, the present work proposes a new type of dental impression, which is reinforced with rigid mouthguards. The aim of the study is to test the performances of such new impressions by comparing them to conventional ones—from this critical point of view, of the dimensional stability. Three types of polymeric materials were considered for both types of impressions: alginate, condensation silicone, and addition silicone. In order to obtain the new type of impressions, a manufacturing technique was developed, comprising the following phases: (i) conventional impressions were made; (ii) a plaster model was duplicated, and 15 rigid mouthguards were obtained; (iii) they were inserted in the impression technique, with each mouthguard positioned on the cast before the high-consistency material was inserted in the tray and the practitioner took the impression; (iv) the mouthguard remained in the tray and the low-viscosity material was inserted over the mouthguard; (v) the impression was positioned on the model, and after the material hardened, the mouthguard-reinforced impression was analyzed. In the evaluation of the dimensional stability, rigorous statistical analysis was essential to discern the performance differences between conventional and mouthguard-reinforced dental impressions. Statistical analyses employed non-parametric Mann–Whitney U tests because of the non-normal distribution of the data. They indicated a statistically significant improvement in the dimensional stability of addition silicone impressions when reinforced with mouthguards (p < 0.05), showcasing superior performance over conventional methods. Conversely, alginate and condensation silicone reinforced impressions did not exhibit the same level of stability improvement, suggesting the need for further optimization of these materials. In conclusion, from the three considered elastomers, addition silicone was found to be the prime candidate for high-precision dental impressions, with the potential to improve their quality from conventional impressions by utilizing the proposed reinforcing technique. (1) Background: Unclear sonographic findings without adequate specialist expertise in abdominal ultrasound (AU) may harm patients in rural areas, due to overlooked diagnoses, unnecessary additional imaging (e.g., CT scan), and/or patient transport to referral expert centers. Appropriate telemedical sonography assistance could lead to corresponding savings. (2) Methods: The study was designed as a randomized trial. Selected study centers performed AU with the best local expertise. Patients were selected and monitored according to the indication that they required AU. The study depicted three basic scenarios. Group 1 corresponds to the telemedically assisted cohort, group 2 corresponds to the non-telemedically assisted cohort, and group 3 corresponds to a telemedically supported cohort for teaching purposes. The target case number of all three groups was 400 patients (20 calculated dropouts included). (3) Discussion: This study might help to clarify whether telemedicine-assisted ultrasound by a qualified expert is non-inferior to presence sonography concerning technical success and whether one of the interventions is superior in terms of efficacy and safety in one or more secondary endpoints. Randomization was provided, as every patient who needed an AU was included and then randomized to one of the groups. The third group consisted of a lower number of patients who were selected from group 1 or 2 for teaching purposes in case of rare diseases or findings. Although relatively specific anatomo-electro-clinical features of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with bilateral ictal involvement (bitemporal epilepsy—BTLE) have been described, differentiating between BTLE and unilateral TLE (UTLE) remains challenging. Surgery is often the treatment of choice for drug-resistant UTLE, whereas its use is more controversial in BTLE. It is currently unclear whether neuropsychological assessment can contribute to the differential diagnosis. We retrospectively reviewed the neuropsychological evaluation of 46 consecutive patients with refractory TLE. Eighteen patients were diagnosed with BTLE on the basis of ictal electro-clinical data, in particular a video EEG recording of at least one seizure simultaneously involving the two temporal lobes without the possibility of lateralizing its onset or at least two different seizures independently arising from the two temporal lobes. Twenty-eight patients were classified as UTLE. Presurgery evaluation data were used in this study. Compared with UTLE, BTLE was associated with a lower intelligence quotient (IQ) and more severe impairment in long-term memory, the latter remaining significant even after controlling for IQ. No significant differences were found between right and left UTLE. In conclusion, BTLE and UTLE are associated with relatively distinct neuropsychological profiles, further supporting their classification as different disorders within the TLE spectrum. This study aimed to investigate the polyphenolic composition and antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of six Romanian Stachys species: S. officinalis, S. germanica, S. byzantina, S. sylvatica, S. palustris, and S. recta. The LC-MS/MS method was used to analyze the polyphenolic profile, while the phenolic contents were spectrophotometrically determined. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the following methods: DPPH, FRAP, nitrite-induced autooxidation of hemoglobin, inhibition of cytochrome c-catalyzed lipid peroxidation, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The in vitro antimicrobial properties were assessed using agar-well diffusion, broth microdilution, and antibiofilm assays. Fifteen polyphenols were identified using LC-MS and chlorogenic acid was the major component in all the samples (1131.8–6761.4 μg/g). S. germanica, S. palustris, and S. byzantina extracts each displayed an intense antiradical action in relation to high contents of TPC (6.40 mg GAE/mL), flavonoids (3.90 mg RE/mL), and caffeic acid derivatives (0.89 mg CAE/mL). In vitro antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties were exhibited towards Candida albicans, Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains, with the most intense efficacy recorded for S. germanica and S. byzantina when tested against S. aureus. These results highlighted Stachys extracts as rich sources of bioactive compounds with promising antioxidant and antimicrobial efficacies and important perspectives for developing phytopharmaceuticals. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a group of connective tissue disorders leading to abnormal bone formation, mainly due to mutations in genes encoding collagen type I (Col I). Osteogenesis is regulated by a number of molecules, including microRNAs (miRNAs), indicating their potential as targets for OI therapy. The goal of this study was to identify and analyze the expression profiles of miRNAs involved in bone extracellular matrix (ECM) regulation in patients diagnosed with OI type I caused by mutations in COL1A1 or COL1A2. Primary skin fibroblast cultures were used for DNA purification and sequence analysis, followed by analysis of miRNA expression. Sequencing analysis revealed mutations of the COL1A1 or COL1A2 genes in all OI patients, including four previously unreported. Amongst the 40 miRNAs analyzed, 9 were identified exclusively in OI cells and 26 in both OI patients and the controls. In the latter case, the expression of six miRNAs (hsa-miR-10b-5p, hsa-miR-19a-3p, hsa-miR-19b-3p, has-miR-204-5p, has-miR-216a-5p, and hsa-miR-449a) increased, while four (hsa-miR-129-5p, hsa-miR-199b-5p, hsa-miR-664a-5p, and hsa-miR-30a-5p) decreased significantly in OI cells in comparison to their expression in the control cells. The identified mutations and miRNA expression profiles shed light on the intricate processes governing bone formation and ECM regulation, paving the way for further research and potential therapeutic advancements in OI and other genetic diseases related to bone abnormality management. The study aimed to assess self-reported symptoms of periodontal disease (gingival bleeding, tooth mobility and halitosis) among diabetic and non-diabetic patients from Transylvania, Romania. Using statistical analysis methods, correlation between the aforementioned symptoms and diet, oral hygiene habits, stress, physical activity, and BMI (body mass index) were researched. Another secondary objective was to assess the impact of self-reported oral health, aesthetics, and halitosis on their life. Patients' willingness to use a mobile app for generating awareness of oro-dental complications, improving their knowledge of oro-dental health, and reminding them to visit the dentist based on an awareness-raising function, was also assessed. Methods: The study was based on an original self-administered questionnaire, applied to 182 subjects, in an unselected, randomized manner. A total of 110 questionnaires were applied in two dental offices and 72 questionnaires were applied in a public clinic for diabetic patients from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Results: Warning signs and symptoms relevant to periodontal disease were identified by respondents, having statistically significant associations with the declared oral health-care habits, including interdental aids, vicious habits (nail biting, bruxism), etc. Some of these periodontal signs could be correlated with a certain lifestyle, such as the perceived stress, smoking status, practicing maintenance sports, and alcohol consumption. A total of 66% of the non-diabetics and 68% of the diabetics of the surveyed subjects consider a software application for generating awareness of oro-dental complications useful, and are willing to pay around EUR 6 for it. Conclusions: Having a medical condition such as diabetes makes patients pay more attention to dental health compared with non-diabetic patients. Patients expressed their desire to use a software application to help them to be aware of their condition and for improving their self-report capabilities, including their oral-health-related status. To explore the role of forest carbon sinks in achieving carbon neutrality, the cointegration regression method and scenario analysis are utilized to forecast the long-term development trend of China's forest carbon sinks up to the year 2100 and their impact on carbon neutrality. The results show that: (1) Under routine, accelerated, and strengthened ecological civilization scenarios (or RECS, AECS, and SECS, respectively), China's forests are projected to absorb 531–645 million tons of carbon by 2050 and 2.32–4.69 billion tons of carbon by 2100, respectively, and the value of the strengthened scenario will be markedly higher than that of the routine scenario. (2) Driven by slower growth in forestry investment, China's forest carbon sinks growth in all three scenarios peak by 2050 and then slow in a U-trend, with the growth rate in the SECS 0.45 percentage points higher than that of AECS, and the growth rate in the AECS 0.44 percentage points higher than that of RECS. (3) Under SECS, forest carbon sinks can help China achieve its carbon neutrality goal in 2054 (before the target date of 2060) with cumulative forestry investment of 53.3 trillion yuan and an annual investment growth rate of about 6.3%. Background: Child abuse represents an important issue in the medico-legal and social context. In the last few decades, various aspects and mechanisms have been identified in child abuse case studies; however, constant research is needed in the field. With this paper, the authors will present a case of a new entity of Abusive Head Trauma that has come to the attention of medico-legal experts. Discussion: The trauma analysis performed on the cranio-encephalic district of the baby revealed quite peculiar lesions that led the authors to exclude that the injuries had been solely caused by violent shaking of the baby's head, as suggested by Shaken Baby Syndrome. Instead, the authors hypothesised that another lesion mechanism had been added to this one, namely latero-lateral cranial compression. The comprehensive and exhaustive analysis of the case led the authors to present a new possible entity in child abuse trauma, namely 'Compressed Baby Head'. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, in the current literature, no similar clinical cases have ever been described. Thus, the case's uniqueness deserves to be brought to the attention of experts and the entire scientific community, as well as medical personnel, paediatricians, and reanimators. These professional figures are the first individuals who may encounter complex clinical cases such as the one presented in this paper; thus, they need to know how to properly manage the case and ensure protection for the abused infants and children. Featured Application: Applications of polygon mirror-based scanning heads include laser scanning, 2D and 3D printing, laser manufacturing, imaging, optical metrology, and Remote Sensing. Polygon Mirror (PM)-based scanning heads are one of the fastest and most versatile optomechanical laser scanners. The aim of this work is to develop a multi-parameter opto-mechanical analysis of PMs, from which to extract rules-of-thumbs for the design of such systems. The characteristic functions and parameters of PMs scanning heads are deduced and studied, considering their constructive and functional parameters. Optical aspects related to the kinematics of emergent laser beams (and of corresponding laser spots on a scanned plane or objective lens) are investigated. The PM analysis (which implies a larger number of parameters) is confronted with the corresponding, but less complex aspects of Galvanometer Scanners (GSs). The issue of the non-linearity of the scanning functions of both PMs and GSs (and, consequently, of their variable scanning velocities) is approached, as well as characteristic angles, the angular and linear Field-of-View (FOV), and the duty cycle. A device with two supplemental mirrors is proposed and designed to increase the distance between the GS or PM and the scanned plane or lens to linearize the scanning function (and thus to achieve an approximately constant scanning velocity). These optical aspects are completed with Finite Element Analyses (FEA) of fast rotational PMs, to assess their structural integrity issues. The study is concluded with an optomechanical design scheme of PM-based scanning heads, which unites optical and mechanical aspects—to allow for a more comprehensive approach of possible issues of such scanners. (1) Background: Aesthetic dentistry has become one of the most dynamic fields in modern dental medicine. Ceramic veneers represent the most appropriate prosthetic restorations for smile enhancement, due to their minimal invasiveness and highly natural appearance. For long-term clinical success, accurate design of both tooth preparation and ceramic veneers is of paramount importance. The aims of this in vitro study were to assess the stress in anterior teeth restored with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) ceramic veneers and compare the resistance to detachment and the fracture of ceramic veneers prepared using two different designs. (2) Methods: Sixteen lithium disilicate ceramic veneers were designed and milled using the CAD-CAM technology and divided into two groups according to the preparations (n = 8): Group 1, conventional (CO), with linear marginal contour and Group 2, crenelated (CR), the latter with our novel (patented) sinusoidal marginal design. All samples were bonded to anterior natural teeth. The mechanical resistance to detachment and fracture was investigated by applying bending forces on the incisal margin of the veneers in order to determine which type of preparation leads to better adhesion. An analytic method was employed, as well, and the results of the two approaches were compared. (3) Results: The mean values of the maximum force recorded at the veneer detachment were 78.82 ± 16.55 N for the CO group and 90.20 ± 29.81 N for the CR group. The relative increase, equal to 14.43%, demonstrated that the novel CR tooth preparation provided higher adhesive joints. In order to determine the stress distribution within the adhesive layer, a finite element analysis (FEA) was performed. The statistical t-test showed that the mean value of the maximum normal stresses is higher for the CR-type preparations. (4) Conclusions: The patented CR veneers represent a practical solution to augment the adhesion and mechanical properties of ceramic veneers. The obtained results demonstrated that CR adhesive joints triggered higher mechanical and adhesive forces, which subsequently led to a higher resistance to detachment and fracture. Traditional biochemical methods are resource- and time-consuming; therefore, there is a need for cost-effective alternatives. A spectral analysis is one of the non-destructive techniques that are more widely used for fruit quality determination; however, references are needed for traditional methods. In this study, visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy was used to analyze the internal quality attributes of tomatoes. For the first time, 80 varieties with large differences in fruit size, shape, color, and internal structure were used for an analysis. The aim of this study was to develop models suitable to predict a taste index, as well as the content of lycopene, flavonoids, β-carotene, total phenols, and dry matter of intact tomatoes based on Vis-NIR reflectance spectra. The content of phytochemicals was determined in 80 varieties of tomatoes. A total of 140 Vis-NIR reflectance spectra were obtained using the portable spectroradiometer RS-3500 (Spectral Evolution Inc.). Partial least squares regression (PLS) and multiple scatter correction (MSC) were used to develop calibration models. Our results indicated that PLS models with good prediction accuracies were obtained. The present study showed the high capability of Vis-NIR spectroscopy to determine the content of lycopene and dry matter of intact tomatoes with a determination coefficient of 0.90 for both parameters. A regression fit of R 2   = 0.86, R 2   = 0.84, R 2   = 0.82, and R 2 =   0 .73 was also achieved for the taste index, flavonoids, β-carotene, and total phenols, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Falls are the most frequent adverse events recorded in healthcare facilities. By employing a multifaceted strategy to ensure prevention interventions that are specific to the patient type and environmental risk management, risk factor evaluation may help to reduce falls in the hospital setting. Patient falls are one of the main causes of lawsuits against hospitals, which has led to the development of validated instruments that are beneficial in treating the patient after the incident and effective in minimizing the frequency of falls. The aim of our study is to evaluate compensation claims asserting healthcare culpability in situations where a patient fell in a hospital setting. The collected data relate to judgments issued in Italy until December 2022 regarding 30 episodes of falls that occurred between 2003 and 2018. Our research revealed that approximately 50% of Italian healthcare organizations lose the case in court when a patient falls in a hospital setting and dies or is injured. In half of these cases, the failure of the medical staff to use protective equipment against falls is what led to the court's acceptance of the compensation claim. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was coupled with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) to simultaneously quantify trehalose and trehalose 6-phosphate without derivatization or sample preparation. The use of full scan mode and exact mass analysis also makes it possible to carry out metabolomic analyses as well as semi-quantification. In addition, the use of different clusters in negative mode makes it possible to compensate for deficiencies in linearity and inerrant saturation at time-of-flight detectors. There are different breast cancer molecular subtypes with differences in incidence, treatment response and outcome. They are roughly divided into estrogen and progesterone receptor (ER and PR) negative and positive cancers. In this retrospective study, we included 185 patients augmented with 25 SMOTE patients and divided them into two groups: the training group consisted of 150 patients and the validation cohort consisted of 60 patients. Tumors were manually delineated and whole-volume tumor segmentation was used to extract first-order radiomic features. The ADC-based radiomics model reached an AUC of 0.81 in the training cohort and was confirmed in the validation set, which yielded an AUC of 0.93, in differentiating ER/PR positive from ER/PR negative status. We also tested a combined model using radiomics data together with ki67% proliferation index and histological grade, and obtained a higher AUC of 0.93, which was also confirmed in the validation group. Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a heterogeneous group of disorders affecting virtually every population, regardless of their ethnic or socioeconomic background. Their pathogenesis is multifactorial, based on interactions between genetic and environmental factors. The key symptom of ASD are deficits in social communication, which are the basis of many difficulties in everyday functioning. The aim of the presented study was to analyze the clinical picture of social cognition deficits in boys with autism spectrum disorders and to relate its elements with the frequency of alleles of selected polymorphisms within the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) and vasopressin receptor 1A (AVPR1A) genes. The study included 58 boys with IQ > 90, who were divided into two groups based on a confirmed or excluded ASD diagnosis based on the DSM-5 and ICD-10 criteria and then using the ADOS-2 protocol. The results indicated that polymorphism rs10877969 (T) within the AVPR1a gene was the only one to show a statistically significant association with a higher risk of autism spectrum disorders and has an impact on clinical presentation in the ADOS-2 study, primarily in terms of the social affect subscale. Polymorphisms in the OXTR gene showed no significant association with ASD risk and severity of autistic traits in the ADOS-2 study. In the group of people with ASD and those who are neurotypical, the rs53572 (A) genotype in the OXTR gene significantly increased the severity of the clinical picture of social cognition disorders in reading mind in the eyes test (RMiE) and empathy quotient (EQ) studies. There is an increasing interest in applying artificial intelligence techniques to forecast epileptic seizures. In particular, machine learning algorithms could extract nonlinear statistical regularities from electroencephalographic (EEG) time series that can anticipate abnormal brain activity. The recent literature reports promising results in seizure detection and prediction tasks using machine and deep learning methods. However, performance evaluation is often based on questionable randomized cross-validation schemes, which can introduce correlated signals (e.g., EEG data recorded from the same patient during nearby periods of the day) into the partitioning of training and test sets. The present study demonstrates that the use of more stringent evaluation strategies, such as those based on leave-one-patient-out partitioning, leads to a drop in accuracy from about 80% to 50% for a standard eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifier on two different data sets. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a noninvasive and low-operator-dependent imaging method for carotid-artery-stenosis diagnosis. A previously developed prototype for 3D ultrasound scans based on a standard ultrasound machine and a pose reading sensor was used for this study. Working in a 3D space and processing data using automatic segmentation lowers operator dependency. Additionally, ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive diagnosis method. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based automatic segmentation of the acquired data was performed for the reconstruction and visualization of the scanned area: the carotid artery wall, the carotid artery circulated lumen, soft plaque, and calcified plaque. A qualitative evaluation was conducted via comparing the US reconstruction results with the CT angiographies of healthy and carotid-artery-disease patients. The overall scores for the automated segmentation using the MultiResUNet model for all segmented classes in our study were 0.80 for the IoU and 0.94 for the Dice. The present study demonstrated the potential of the MultiResUNet-based model for 2D-ultrasound-image automated segmentation for atherosclerosis diagnosis purposes. Laser scanners with rotational Risley prisms produce scan patterns that can be classified as a type of rhodonea curve, because of their symmetry. The present study builds upon the novel, graphical method that we have developed to simulate and analyze such patterns using a commercially available mechanical design program, CATIA V5R20 (Dassault Systems, Paris, France). This graphical method has both the advantage of simplicity (regarding analytical methods) and of generating exact scan patterns (in contrast to approximate methods). The aim of this work is to utilize this method to study symmetry properties of scan patterns produced by a pair of rotational Risley prisms. A multi-parameter analysis is performed, considering the characteristic parameters of the approached scanner: refractive indexes and angles of the prisms, as well as their rotational velocities. Furthermore, Marshall's parameters are considered: ratios of the rotational velocities and of the prism angles. Because the symmetries are identical for scan patterns generated by all the four possible configurations of a pair of prisms (and only their dimensions are different), the shape of these patterns is studied only for one of these configurations. Therefore, without losing generality, the symmetries of the patterns produced by such scanners are determined, as well as some of their characteristic dimensions. Rules-of-thumb were obtained to be able to generate patterns that are appropriate for a specific application. Moreover, we demonstrated that the existing symmetries simplify the process of obtaining the scan patterns by identifying repetitive parts (defined as structures of symmetry) of a pattern. Background and Objectives: Implant rehabilitation of complete edentulous arches has become more and more popular because of the increased access of the population to this type of treatment. Furthermore, the development of new rehabilitation procedures can be applied in most clinical cases, including in those with severe atrophy. Hence, this study aimed to assess the functional changes that can occur in the stomatognathic system after implant rehabilitation procedures. Materials and Methods: A total of 63 patients were accepted in the study. They were divided into a first control (dentate) group (CG) and a second study group (edentulous, SG). For the latter, 30 patients received 204 two-stage implants immediately loaded with provisional prostheses. Surface electromyography (EMG) was assessed at the time of prostheses fixation, while for some patients it was applied six months after the fixation of the fixed prostheses, as well. These supplemental investigated patients formed a third, follow-up study group (FSG). All assessments were performed during the processes of clenching and mastication. The obtained data of the two study groups, SG and FSG, were compared with those of the control group, CG. Results: No statistical differences were found in the electrical muscular activity between the study and control groups during both clenching and mastication (p > 0.05). In addition, there were no differences within the same study group, both initially and after 6 months. The only changes were noticed between static and dynamic values for the right masseter muscle in the follow-up group FSG (p = 0.008). Deviations of the overlapping coefficients were similar for all groups (p = 0.086): for CG, 20.5%, median 11.1 (min. 0, max. 104); for SG, 21.4%, median 12.2 (min. 0, max. 103); for FSG, 36.1%, median 26.9 (min. 0, max. 160). This revealed no neuromuscular adaption to the prostheses. Conclusions: Implant-prosthetic rehabilitation led to an EMG activity that was similar to that of dentate patients immediately after the placement of the fixed implant-supported prostheses. Moreover, the measured values did not change after six months of functioning for all evaluated parameters. This may point to an immediate restoration of the muscle contraction capacity, without the necessity of adaptation over time. The study serves as an argument for the application and reliability of the immediate fixed implant-supported prostheses from the perspective of muscle adaptation and functioning. 3D-printed materials are present in numerous applications, from medicine to engineering. The aim of this study is to assess their suitability for an application of interest today, that of testing of 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA)-based reactors for biogas production using anaerobic digestion. The impact of temperature, pH, and aqueous phase on the tested bioreactor is investigated, together with the effect of the gaseous phase (i.e., produced biogas). Two batches of materials used separately, one after another inside the bioreactor were considered, in a realistic situation. Two essential parameters inside the reactor (i.e., pH and temperature) were continuously monitored during a time interval of 25 to 30 days for each of the two biogas-generating processes. To understand the impact of these processes on the walls of the bioreactor, samples of 3D-printed material were placed at three levels: at the top (i.e., outside the substrate), in the middle, and at the bottom of the bioreactor. The samples were analyzed using a non-destructive imaging method, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). An in-house developed swept-source (SS) OCT system, master–slave (MS) enhanced, operating at a central wavelength of 1310 nm was utilized. The 3D OCT images related to the degradation level of the material of the PLA samples were validated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The differences between the impact of the substrate on samples situated at the three considered levels inside the reactor were determined and analyzed using their OCT B-scans (optical cross-section images). Thus, the impact of the biogas-generating process on the interior of the bioreactor was demonstrated and quantified, as well as the capability of OCT to perform such assessments. Computer aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has become an increasingly popular part of dentistry, which today also includes CAD/CAM resin-based composite (RBC) applications. Because CAD/CAM RBCs are much more difficult to bond, many methods and attachment materials are still being proposed, while the best application method is still a matter of debate. The present study therefore evaluates causal factors for a reliable long-term bond, which includes the surface preparation of the CAD/CAM RBC, aging and the type of luting material. The reliability of the bond was calculated, and supplemented by fractography to identify fracture mechanisms. Five categories of luting materials were used: (1) temporary zinc phosphate cement, (2) glass ionomer cement (GIC), (3) resin-modified GIC, (4) conventional adhesive resin cement (ARC), and (5) self-adhesive RC. Half of the CAD/CAM RBC surfaces (n = 200) were sandblasted (SB) with 50 µm aluminum oxide, while the other half remained untreated. Bond strength measurements of the 400 resulting specimens were carried out after 24 h (n = 200) or after additional aging (10,000 thermo-cycles between 5 and 55 °C) (n = 200). The data were statistically analyzed using one- and three-way ANOVA followed by Games-Howell post-hoc test (α = 0.05) and Weibull analysis. Aging resulted in a significant decrease in bond strength primarily for the conventional cements. The highest bond strengths and reliabilities were recorded for both ARCs. SB caused a significant increase in bond strength for most luting materials, but also caused microcracks in the CAD/CAM RBC. Background and Objectives: Breast cancer (BC) molecular subtypes have unique incidence, survival and response to therapy. There are five BC subtypes described by immunohistochemistry: luminal A, luminal B HER2 positive and HER2 negative, triple negative (TNBC) and HER2-enriched. Multiparametric breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) provides morphological and functional characteristics of breast tumours and is nowadays recommended in the preoperative setting. Aim: To evaluate the multiparametric MRI features (T2-WI, ADC values and DCE) of breast tumours along with breast density and background parenchymal enhancement (BPE) features among different BC molecular subtypes. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study which included 344 patients. All underwent multiparametric breast MRI (T2WI, ADC and DCE sequences) and features were extracted according to the latest BIRADS lexicon. The inter-reader agreement was assessed using the intraclass coefficient (ICC) between the ROI of ADC obtained from the two breast imagers (experienced and moderately experienced). Results: The study population was divided as follows: 89 (26%) with luminal A, 39 (11.5%) luminal B HER2 positive, 168 (48.5%) luminal B HER2 negative, 41 (12%) triple negative (TNBC) and 7 (2%) with HER2 enriched. Luminal A tumours were associated with special histology type, smallest tumour size and persistent kinetic curve (all p-values < 0.05). Luminal B HER2 negative tumours were associated with lowest ADC value (0.77 × 10−3 mm2/s2), which predicts the BC molecular subtype with an accuracy of 0.583. TNBC were associated with asymmetric and moderate/marked BPE, round/oval masses with circumscribed margins and rim enhancement (all p-values < 0.05). HER2 enriched BC were associated with the largest tumour size (mean 37.28 mm, p-value = 0.02). Conclusions: BC molecular subtypes can be associated with T2WI, ADC and DCE MRI features. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak posed a challenge for diagnostic laboratories worldwide, with low-middle income countries (LMICs) being the most affected. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the gold standard method for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the challenge with this method is that it is expensive, which has resulted in under-testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection in many LMICs. Hence, this study aimed to compare and evaluate alternative methods for the mass testing of SARS-CoV-2 infection in laboratories with limited resources to identify cost-effective, faster, and accurate alternatives to the internationally approved kits. A total of 50 residual nasopharyngeal swab samples were used for evaluation and comparison between internationally approved kits (Thermo Fisher PureLink™ RNA Isolation Kit and Thermo Fisher TaqPath™ COVID-19 Assay Kit) and alternative methods (three RNA extraction and four commercial SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR assay kits) in terms of the cost analysis, diagnostic accuracy, and turnaround time. In terms of performance, all of the alternative RNA extraction methods evaluated were comparable to the internationally approved kits but were more cost-effective (Lucigen QuickExtract™ RNA Extraction Kit, Bosphore EX-Tract Dry Swab RNA Solution and Sonicator method) and four commercial SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR assay kits (Nucleic Acid COVID-19 Test Kit (SARS-CoV-2), abTESTM COVID-19 qPCR I Kit, PCL COVID19 Speedy RT-PCR Kit, and PCLMD nCoV One-Step RT-PCR Kit) with a sensitivity range of 76–100% and specificity of 96–100%. The cost per sample was reduced by more than 50% when compared to internationally approved kits. When compared to the Thermo Fisher PureLink™ Kit and Thermo Fisher TaqPath™ COVID-19 Assay Kit, the alternative methods had a faster turnaround time, indicating that laboratories with limited resources may be able to process more samples in a day. The above-mentioned cost-effective, fast, and accurate evaluated alternative methods can be used in routine diagnostic laboratories with limited resources for mass testing for SARS-CoV-2 because these were comparable to the internationally approved kits, Thermo Fisher PureLink™ Kit and Thermo Fisher TaqPath™ COVID-19 Assay Kit. Consumers are avoiding the consumption of highly processed foods, aware of the negative effects of the additives or high temperatures used on the biological value of the food. This causes an interest in ways of minimal processing or low-temperature cooking procedures. However, to achieve the desired organoleptic quality, it is necessary to know the relationship between the parameters of the treatments and the type of raw material. The purpose of this study was to investigate the complex effects of traditional cooking and sous vide heat treatment, cold storage time and muscle on the physicochemical and sensory properties of beef. The study material consisted of samples of musculus longissimus thoracis and musculus semitendinosus obtained from beef half-carcasses. The muscles were subjected to traditional cooking in water at 95 °C until the temperature inside the piece reached 65 °C and sous vide treatment at 65 °C for 2 h. The study was performed after 2 and 21 days of cold storage. Instrumental evaluation of texture parameters, color and sensory evaluation of meat was carried out. Meat stored for 21 days was characterized by more favorable TPA test (Texture Profile Analysis) results compared to meat evaluated 48 h post mortem. The study also showed positive effects of sous vide heat treatment on texture parameters and sensory properties (especially on tenderness and palatability), as well as differences in the formation of quality traits between muscles. Given the trends associated with energy-saving technologies, it is desirable to seek the optimal combination of temperature and time of fixation treatments at an acceptable level of quality. Helminth infections are among the neglected tropical diseases affecting billions of people globally, predominantly in developing countries. Helminths' effects are augmented by coincident tuberculosis disease, which infects a third of the world's population. The role of helminth infections on the pathogenesis and pathology of active tuberculosis (T.B.) remains controversial. Parasite-induced suppression of the efficacy of Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) has been widely reported in helminth-endemic areas worldwide. T.B. immune response is predominantly proinflammatory T-helper type 1 (Th1)-dependent. On the other hand, helminth infections induce an opposing anti-inflammatory Th2 and Th3 immune-regulatory response. This review summarizes the literature focusing on host immune response profiles during single-helminth, T.B. and dual infections. It also aims to necessitate investigations into the complexity of immunity in helminth/T.B. coinfected patients since the research data are limited and contradictory. Helminths overlap geographically with T.B., particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Each disease elicits a response which may skew the immune responses. However, these effects are helminth species-dependent, where some parasites have no impact on the immune responses to concurrent T.B. The implications for the complex immunological interactions that occur during coinfection are highlighted to inform government treatment policies and encourage the development of high-efficacy T.B. vaccines in areas where helminths are prevalent. Green methanol is a viable alternative for the storage of hydrogen and may be produced from captured anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide. The latter was hydrogenated over Cu-ZnO catalysts supported on an aluminum fumarate metal-organic framework (AlFum MOF). The catalysts, prepared via slurry phase impregnation, were assessed for thermocatalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. PXRD, FTIR, and SBET exhibited a decrease in crystallinity of the AlFum MOF support after impregnation with Cu-Zn active sites. SEM, SEM-EDS, and TEM revealed that the morphology of the support is preserved after metal loading, where H2-TPR confirmed the presence of active sites for hydrogen uptake. The catalysts exhibited good activity, with a doubling in Cu and Zn loading over the AlFum MOF, resulting in a 4-fold increase in CO2 conversions from 10.8% to 45.6% and an increase in methanol productivity from 34.4 to 56.5 gMeOH/Kgcat/h. The catalysts exhibited comparatively high CO selectivity and high yields of H2O, thereby favoring the reverse water-gas shift reaction. The selectivity of the catalysts towards methanol was found to be 12.9% and 6.9%. The performance of the catalyst supported on AlFum MOF further highlights the potential use of MOFs as supports in the heterogeneous thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 to value-added products. Background and Objectives: The excessive use of smartphones for various tasks led to a new adverse postural phenomenon called text neck. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the text neck posture (TNP) on static occlusion by using the T-Scan III occlusal diagnostic system. Materials and Methods: Nineteen subjects (aged 20 to 24 years) were considered for this research. They had normal values for anterior overbite and overjet, Angle Class I occlusion, no posterior crossbite, and no signs or symptoms of cervical or temporo-mandibular disorders. Occlusal registrations were performed with the T-Scan III system in a normal, neutral head posture (NHP), as well as in the TNP. The investigated parameters were: occlusion time (OT), asymmetry index of the occlusal force (AOF), percent of the maximum movie force (%MMF), and the time elapsed from the last occlusal contact until the maximum intercuspation (MAT-OTB). The last three parameters were analyzed in the maximum area frame (MA) of the registrations. For the statistical analysis of the recorded data, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and the Spearman's correlation coefficient were used. Results: The following values were obtained in NHP and in TNP: for AOF, 14.88 ± 10.39% and 18.04 ± 12.83%, respectively; for OT, 1.34 ± 1.84 s and 1.32 ± 1.8 s, respectively; for the %MMF, 97.5 ± 2.83% and 96.31 ± 3.17%, respectively; for MAT-OTB, 2.08 ± 1.82 s and 1.45 ± 2.3 s, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between the static occlusal parameters measured in NHP and those in TNP. However, the high values of the AOF and OT in NHP revealed an imbalance of the occlusal force distribution between the right and left side in maximum intercuspation (MI), as well as a lack of simultaneity of static occlusal contacts. Furthermore, there was a significant, direct, and strong correlation between OT and AOF in NHP. Conclusions: The NHP should not be used as the starting position in TNP simulations in T-Scan studies, so as to avoid statistically insignificant differences between static occlusion in NHP and TNP. The healthy standing subjects, with normal occlusal relationships from the clinical point of view, revealed an occlusal instability in NHP when examined with the T-Scan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
