Positron annihilation spectroscopy is a powerful probe to investigate the interfaces in materials relevant for energy storage such as Li-ion batteries. The key to the interpretation of the results is the positron implantation profile, which is a spatial function related to the characteristics of the materials forming the battery. We provide models for the positron implantation profile in a cathode of a Li-ion battery coin cell. These models are the basis for a reliable visualization of multilayer geometries and their interfaces in thin cathodes of lithium-ion batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Positron annihilation spectroscopy using lifetime and Doppler broadening allows the characterization of the lithiation state in LiCoO2 thin film used in cathode of lithium-ion batteries. The lifetime results reflect positron spillover because of the presence of graphite in between the oxide grains in real cathode Li-ion batteries. This spillover produces an effect in the measured positron parameters which are sensitive to delocalized electrons from lithium atoms as in Compton scattering results. The first component of the positron lifetime corresponds to a bulk-like state and can be used to characterize the state of charge of the cathode while the second component represents a surface state at the grain-graphite interface. The detailed study of the interplay between the physicochemical properties and the long-range charge migration mechanism of polymer electrolytes able to carry lithium ions is crucial in the development of next-generation lithium batteries. Glycerol exhibits a number of features (e.g., glass-forming behavior, low glass transition temperature, high flexibility of the backbone, and efficient coordination of lithium ions) that make it an appealing ion-conducting medium and a challenging building block in the preparation of new inorganic-organic polymer electrolytes. This work reports the preparation and the extensive investigation of a family of 11 electrolytes based on lithium glycerolate. The electrolytes have the formula C3H5(OH)3-x(OLi)x, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. The elemental composition is evaluated by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. The structure and interactions are studied by vibrational spectroscopies (FT-IR and micro-Raman). The thermal properties are gauged by modulated differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Finally, insights on the long-range charge migration mechanism and glycerol relaxation events are investigated via broadband electrical spectroscopy. Results show that in these electrolytes, glycerolate acts as a large and flexible macro-anion, bestowing to the material single-ion conductivity (1.99 × 10-4 at 30 °C and 1.55 × 10-2 S·cm-1 at 150 °C for x = 0.250). Platinum is a main catalyst for the electroreduction of oxygen, a reaction of primary importance to the technology of low-temperature fuel cells. Due to the high cost of platinum, there is a need to significantly lower its loadings at interfaces. However, then O2-reduction often proceeds at a less positive potential, and produces higher amounts of undesirable H2O2-intermediate. Hybrid supports, which utilize metal oxides (e.g., CeO2, WO3, Ta2O5, Nb2O5, and ZrO2), stabilize Pt and carbon nanostructures and diminish their corrosion while exhibiting high activity toward the four-electron (most efficient) reduction in oxygen. Porosity of carbon supports facilitates dispersion and stability of Pt nanoparticles. Alternatively, the Pt-based bi- and multi-metallic catalysts, including PtM alloys or M-core/Pt-shell nanostructures, where M stands for certain transition metals (e.g., Au, Co, Cu, Ni, and Fe), can be considered. The catalytic efficiency depends on geometric (decrease in Pt–Pt bond distances) and electronic (increase in d-electron vacancy in Pt) factors, in addition to possible metal–support interactions and interfacial structural changes affecting adsorption and activation of O2-molecules. Despite the stabilization of carbons, doping with heteroatoms, such as sulfur, nitrogen, phosphorus, and boron results in the formation of catalytically active centers. Heat-resistant magnetic polymer composites were prepared by incorporating cerium-doped copper-nickel ferrite particles, having the general formula Ni1-xCuxFe1.92Ce0.08O4 (x: 0.0, 0.3, 0.6, 1.0), into a polyimide matrix. The effects of particle type and concentration on the thermal, magnetic, and electrical properties of the resulting composites were investigated. The samples were characterized by FTIR, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, vibrating sample magnetometer, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The composites exhibited high thermal stability, having initial decomposition temperatures between 495 and 509 °C. Saturation magnetization (Ms), magnetic remanence (Mr), and coercivity (Hc) were found in range of 2.37–10.90 emu g−1, 0.45–2.84 emu g−1, and 32–244 Oe, respectively. The study of dielectric properties revealed dielectric constant values of 3.0–4.3 and low dielectric losses of 0.016–0.197 at room temperature and a frequency of 1 Hz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hybrid systems composed of the reduced graphene oxide-supported platinum and multiwalled carbon nanotube-supported iridium (both noble metals utilized at low loadings on the level of 15 and ≤2 µg cm−2, respectively) were considered as catalytic materials for the reduction of oxygen in acid media (0.5-mol dm−3 H2SO4). The electrocatalytic activity toward reduction of oxygen and formation of hydrogen peroxide intermediate are tested using rotating ring–disk electrode (RRDE) voltammetric experiments. The efficiency of the proposed catalytic systems was also addressed by performing galvanodynamic measurements with gas diffusion electrode (GDE) half-cell at 80 °C. The role of carbon nanotubes is to improve charge distribution at the electrocatalytic interface and facilitate the transport of oxygen and electrolyte in the catalytic systems by lowering the extent of reduced graphene oxide restacking during solvent evaporation. The diagnostic electrochemical experiments revealed that—in iridium-containing systems—not only higher disk currents, but also somehow smaller ring currents are produced (when compared to the Ir-free reduced graphene oxide-supported platinum), clearly implying formation of lower amounts of the undesirable hydrogen peroxide intermediate. The enhancement effect originating from the addition of traces of iridium (supported onto carbon nanotubes) to platinum, utilized at low loading, may originate from high ability of iridium to induce decomposition of the undesirable hydrogen peroxide intermediate.
