The non-structural model of heat exchanger networks (HENs) offers a wide solution space for optimization due to the random matching of hot and cold streams. However, this stochastic matching can sometimes result in infeasible structures, leading to inefficient optimization. To address this issue, a tabu matching based on a heuristic algorithm for HENs is proposed. The proposed tabu-matching method involves three main steps: First, the critical temperature levels—high, medium, and low-temperature intervals—are determined based on the inlet and outlet temperatures of streams. Second, the number of nodes is set according to the temperature intervals. Third, the nodes of streams are flexibly matched within the tabu rules: the low-temperature interval of hot streams with the high-temperature interval of cold streams; the streams crossing cannot be matched. The results revealed that by incorporating the tabu rules and adjusting the number of nodes, the ratio of the feasible zone in the whole solution domain increases, and the calculation efficiency is enhanced. To evaluate the effectiveness of the method, three benchmark problems were studied. The obtained total annual costs (TACs) of these case studies exhibited a decrease of USD 4290/yr (case 1), USD 1435/yr (case 2), and USD 11,232/yr (case 3) compared to the best published results. The C12A7 hollow cathode is expected to usher in a new generation of hollow cathodes because of its low work function and chemical stability. In order to reduce the emission melting and degradation caused by the overheating of this new cathode, different working currents of the C12A7 hollow cathode were studied in this work. The working currents ranged from 1 A to 20 A. The results show that the C12A7 hollow cathode works well under the condition of a low current, but it is unstable under high current condition. A simulation with the COMSOL internal working environment showed that enlarging the cathode orifice size is beneficial to reduce the risk of overheating of the electride emitter. The C12A7 hollow cathode shows a voltage transition phenomenon under a high operating current. The plasma plume state at the cathode outlet gradually changes from bright violet to dark yellow. The emitter also melts at high temperatures under high-current conditions. Its short lifetime makes the C12A7 hollow cathode difficult to apply in practical application scenarios under high-current conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Promoting the development and utilization of solar energy is a practical way to alleviate the energy crisis and achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Recently, interest has arisen in the dual-functional active solar thermal façade (ASTF) system that produces hot water throughout the whole year and reduces cooling and heating load as a function of the building façade. Here, a mathematical model of the ASTF system is built and validated by the experimental data, and the annual performance of the ASTF system in representative cities in three climate regions is evaluated. The results are that compared with the common solar water system, the ASTF system adds passive energy savings, which accounts for 5.8%, 7.2% and 11.4% of the total primary energy savings of the system for Shanghai, Beijing and Lanzhou. Compared with the traditional wall, the ASTF saves 16.4% and 23.0% of cooling energy consumption and 102.3% and 92.4% of heating energy consumption for Shanghai and Beijing, respectively. Additionally, it saves 74.7% of heating energy consumption for Lanzhou. Lastly, the impact of the design parameters and operation parameters of the system are investigated, respectively. The non-structural model of a heat exchanger network randomly selects a position of a node on hot and cold streams to generate a heat exchanger and an existing heat exchanger to participate in the evolution. Despite the model being more random and flexible, this selection method cannot easily find a good solution. In addition, the heat exchangers participating in the evolution might not be involved in all streams in each evolutionary process. A stream that does not participate in the evolution will have no significance to the current iteration. Therefore, many iterations are required to make each stream participate in the evolution, which limits the evolution efficiency of the optimization algorithm. In view of this shortcoming, this study proposes a participatory evolutionary strategy for streams based on hot streams. The proposed strategy reorders the existing heat exchangers on hot and cold streams and takes the corresponding measures to ensure that a heat exchanger is selected for each stream to participate in the evolution in every cycle. The proposed participatory evolutionary strategy for streams improves the global optimal solution for designs based on non-structural models. Facing the current energy structure urgently needs to be transformed, heat exchanger network (HEN) can implement heat recovery and cost reduction by the arrangement for heat exchanges between cold and hot streams. The plenty of integer and continuous variables involved in HEN synthesis cause the results to be easily trapped in local optima. To avoid this situation, the mechanism of accepting imperfect solutions is added in a novel algorithm called Random Walk Algorithm with Compulsive Evolution. However, several potential solutions maybe abandoned by accepting imperfect solutions. To maintain the global searching ability, and at the same time, protecting the potential solutions during the optimization process, the limitations of accepting imperfect solutions are investigated in this work, then a back substitution strategy and elite optimization strategy based on algorithm are proposed. The former is to identify and adjust the inferior individuals in long-term stagnation while the latter is to keep and perform a fine search for the better solutions. Furthermore, a modified stage-wised superstructure is also developed to implement the flexible placement of utilities, which efficiently enlarges the solution domain. The validation of strategies and model is implemented by three cases, the results are lower, with 2219 $/year, 1280 $/year, and 2M $/year than the best published result, revealing the strong abilities of the proposed method in designing more economical HENs. Supercritical CO2 power cycles have been deeply investigated in recent years. However, their potential in waste heat recovery is still largely unexplored. This paper presents a critical review of engineering background, technical challenges, and current advances of the s-CO2 cycle for waste heat recovery. Firstly, common barriers for the further promotion of waste heat recovery technology are discussed. Afterwards, the technical advantages of the s-CO2 cycle in solving the abovementioned problems are outlined by comparing several state-of-the-art thermodynamic cycles. On this basis, current research results in this field are reviewed for three main applications, namely the fuel cell, internal combustion engine, and gas turbine. For low temperature applications, the transcritical CO2 cycles can compete with other existing technologies, while supercritical CO2 cycles are more attractive for medium- and high temperature sources to replace steam Rankine cycles. Moreover, simple and regenerative configurations are more suitable for transcritical cycles, whereas various complex configurations have advantages for medium- and high temperature heat sources to form cogeneration system. Finally, from the viewpoints of in-depth research and engineering applications, several future development directions are put forward. The aim of heat exchanger network synthesis is to design a cost-effective network configuration with the maximum energy recovery. Therefore, a nodes-based non-structural model considering a series structure (NNM) is proposed. The proposed model utilizes a simple principle based on setting the nodes on streams such that to achieve optimization of a heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) problem. The proposed model uses several nodes to quantify the possible positions of heat exchangers so that the matching between hot and cold streams is random and free. Besides the stream splits, heat exchangers with series structures are introduced in the proposed model. The heuristic algorithm used to solve NNM model is a random walk algorithm with compulsive evolution. The proposed model is used to solve four scale cases of a HENS problem, the results show that the costs obtained by NNM model can be respectively lower 3226 $/a(Case 1), 11,056 $/a(Case 2), 2463 $/a(Case 3), 527 $/a(Case 4) than the best costs listed in literature.
