Wind energy is essential for sustainable energy development, providing a clean and reliable energy source through the wind turbine. However, the vortices and turbulence generated as wind passes through turbines reduce wind speed and increase turbulence, leading to significant power losses for downstream turbines in wind farms. This study investigates wake characteristics in wind turbines by examining the effects of different scale ratios on wake dynamics, using both experimental and numerical approaches, utilizing scaled-down models of the Aeolos H-20 kW turbine at scales of 1:33, 1:50, and 1:67. The experimental component involved wind tunnel tests in an open-circuit tunnel with adjustable wind speeds and controlled turbulence intensity. Additionally, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted using STAR-CCM+ (Version 15.06.02) to numerically analyze the wake characteristics. Prior to the simulation, a convergence test was performed by varying grid density and y+ values to establish optimized simulation settings essential for accurately capturing wake dynamics. The results were validated against experimental data, reinforcing the reliability of the simulations. Despite minor inconsistencies in areas affected by tower and nacelle interference, the overall results strongly support the methodology's effectiveness. The discrepancies between the experimental results and CFD simulations underscore the limitations of the rigid body assumption, which does not fully account for the deformation observed in the experiment. This review paper provides an overview of recent advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of ejector pumps for vacuum generation. It examines various turbulence models, multiphase flow approaches, and numerical techniques employed to capture complex flow phenomena like shock waves, mixing, phase transitions, and heat/mass transfer. Emphasis is placed on the comprehensive assessment of flow characteristics within ejectors, including condensation effects such as nucleation, droplet growth, and non-equilibrium conditions. This review highlights efforts in optimizing ejector geometries and operating parameters to enhance the entrainment ratio, a crucial performance metric for ejectors. The studies reviewed encompass diverse working fluids, flow regimes, and geometric configurations, underscoring the significance of ejector technology across various industries. While substantial progress has been made in developing advanced simulation techniques, several challenges persist, including accurate modeling of real gas behavior, phase change kinetics, and coupled heat/mass transfer phenomena. Future research efforts should focus on developing robust multiphase models, implementing advanced turbulence modeling techniques, integrating machine learning-based optimization methods, and exploring novel ejector configurations for emerging applications. The impact of tropical cyclones on the operation of bridges and railways are mostly dependent on the forecast wind speed trend (upward, downward or staying steady) at present in Hong Kong. There are requests to forecast the exceedance of wind speed thresholds for such operations with a lead time of many hours ahead. This study considers the technical feasibility of forecasting the wind speed along a recently built bridge in Hong Kong with a coupled mesoscale numerical weather prediction (NWP)–computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. This bridge features numerous anemometers where the coupled model can be verified. It is found that these two tropical cyclone cases are very challenging, especially in representing the wind structure of the cyclone because of its relatively small circulation. As such, the timing of the maximum wind could be 2 to 4 h earlier than the actual observation. The maximum wind speed from CFD modeling could be higher than that from the NWP model alone by 5 to 10 m/s, which shows that CFD modeling could add value in the forecasting of wind speed exceedance, although the maximum simulated value is still lower than the actual observation by as much as 10 m/s. As a result, while the general wind speed trend may be forecast, the exceedance of definite values of wind speed limits is still practically rather challenging, given the present two cases of tropical cyclones. Wind resistance optimization is crucial for enhancing the rotational speed of supergravity centrifuges. We conducted a study using computational fluid dynamics on the Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility (CHIEF) under construction at Zhejiang University and validated it experimentally using a ZJU400gt centrifuge. Our findings indicate significant reductions in wind resistance through structural modifications of the CHIEF. Reducing the outer radius from 4650 to 4150 mm decreased wind resistance by 16%, primarily due to reduced effective viscosity in the wake region's gases. More substantial reductions were achieved by lowering the height of the outer wall from 2200 to 1400 mm, which cut wind resistance by 25%. This height reduction suppressed vortex shedding and Kármán vortex street development via the Venturi effect. Adjustments to the roughness height of wall surfaces further decreased wind resistance, with minimal impact from arm roughness. A critical roughness height was identified, below which no further reductions in wind resistance could be attained. Notably, using disc-shaped arms reduced wind resistance by approximately 73% because of their minimal pressure–resistance components and predominant frictional resistance, highlighting their potential in future high-speed centrifuge designs. "Gray space", also known as transitional space, focuses on the connection and transition between indoor and outdoor spaces in architecture. With its unique diversity of forms and functional inclusiveness, gray space reasonably integrates architectural spaces' hierarchical construction with innovative ecological energy-saving concepts. Existing research mainly analyzes and interprets the design techniques of gray space from a visual perception perspective but needs more analysis of classification and design interpretation of the gray spaces in traditional gardens based on climate adaptability. This paper studied the gray spaces in traditional Jiangnan gardens, summarizing five common types of gray space in architectural spaces and their responses to the climate. Subsequently, we selected a typical representative for each of the five types of spaces and used "height-to-depth ratio (HDR), open space ratio (OSR), and direction (DIR)" as variables to conduct wind environment simulations. The simulation results help to determine the optimal climate adaptability scheme for each type of space. Through this research on the gray spaces of traditional gardens, we aimed to contribute to the conservation and utilization of classical gardens from an ecological energy-saving perspective and also provide ideas for passive energy-saving design in small public spaces and garden landscape spaces. In order to solve the problem of the lack of maneuverability of the conventional underwater glider, this paper proposes a hybrid-driven underwater glider equipped with a Kappel tip rake propeller, analyzes the propulsion performance of different types of Kappel tip rake propellers in the wake field of the hybrid-driven underwater glider, optimizes the overall propulsion performance of the hybrid-driven underwater glider, and realizes self-propulsion and gliding with high efficiency and low energy consumption. In the research process, the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation model and the cavitation simulation strategy of VOF two-phase flow were adopted, coupled with the SST k-ω and γ transition turbulence model, and the control calculation error was not more than 3%. Based on the hydrodynamic performance study of the Kappel tip rake propeller, the self-propelled simulation was carried out under the working conditions of 6 kn, 5 kn, 4 kn, and 3 kn, and the gliding simulation was carried out under the working conditions of 1 kn, 0.5 kn, and a glide angle of 12°. The propulsion performance of the hybrid-driven underwater glider with different models of Kappel tip rake propellers was analyzed. It was found that the maximum open water propulsion efficiency of the propeller Kap05 had the largest improvement, which was 3.07% higher than that of the reference base propeller. Under the self-propelled condition, the hybrid-driven underwater glider with the propeller Kap05 had the lowest wake fraction, and the propellers Kap04 and Kap05 had the best propulsion performance in the wake field of the hybrid-driven underwater glider. In the gliding condition, the form of the folding paddle can reduce the gliding resistance generated by the propeller by more than 45% and the gliding negative lift by more than 68%. A moderate tip rake can effectively improve the propulsion efficiency of the Kappel tip rake propeller in the wake field of the hybrid-driven underwater glider, reduce energy loss, and improve the overall performance of the hybrid-driven underwater glider. Indoor air quality (IAQ) has a significant impact on human health, as people spend 90% of their time in various indoor environments. Therefore, research on IAQ is extremely necessary. However, current research on traditional Qiang residences in western Sichuan mainly focuses on the indoor thermal environment and heritage protection, with relatively little attention paid to IAQ. This study investigates the IAQ of traditional Qiang residences in western Sichuan, which have open fire pits as the core of daily life, exploring the impact of passive renovation strategies on the indoor air quality. Using simulation methods, this study employs passive strategies, such as increasing the size of windward windows, changing ventilation methods, relocating the fire pit, and enlarging interior partition openings, to improve and optimize the IAQ through natural ventilation. The results show that when the windward window sizes are 0.8 m × 1.9 m and 0.7 m × 1.55 m, the reduction in the indoor CO2 concentration is the greatest, with a maximum decrease of 0.024% at the 1.5 m plane. This paper proposes passive renovation strategies to improve the indoor air quality of Qiang residences in western Sichuan. These strategies effectively enhance the indoor air quality of Qiang residences and address the research gap on indoor air quality in regional Qiang residences in western Sichuan. In 2021, the Ingenuity helicopter performed the inaugural flight on Mars, heralding a new epoch of exploration. However, the aerodynamics on Mars present unique challenges not found on Earth, such as low chord-based Reynolds number flows, which pose significant hurdles for future missions. The Ingenuity's design incorporated a Reynolds number of approximately 20,000, dictated by the rotor's dimensions. This paper investigates the implications of flows at a Reynolds number of 50,000, conducting a comparative analysis with those at 20,000 Re. The objective is to evaluate the feasibility of using larger rotor dimensions or extended airfoil chord lengths. An increase in the Reynolds number alters the size and position of Laminar Separation Bubbles (LSBs) on the airfoil, significantly impacting performance. This study leverages previous research on the structure and dynamics of LSBs to examine the flow around a cambered plate with 6% camber and 1% thickness in Martian conditions. The aerodynamic behavior of a square-shaped formation of four quadcopter UAVs flying in a swarm is investigated in detail through three-dimensional computer simulations utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology. The swarm configuration comprises four UAVs positioned with two in the upper row and two in the lower row along the same propeller axes. The flow profile generated by the UAV propellers rotating at 10,000 revolutions per minute is analyzed parametrically using the Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) technique. UAVs within the swarm are positioned at 75 cm from the motion centers of adjacent propellers. This distance, the effects of horizontally and vertically positioned UAVs on each other, and the collective behavior of the swarm are thoroughly examined. Pressure, velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy values are meticulously analyzed. This research represents a milestone in understanding the aerodynamic characteristics of UAV swarms and the optimization of swarm performance. Computational techniques can be applied to numerically assess key parameters influencing the biotechnological process to better predict the essential features governing macroalgae growth and nutrient removal in aerated tanks, e.g., integrated into multitrophic aquaculture systems. Recent advances in computational hardware and software, such as the discrete element method (DEM) coupled with computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) codes, have enabled flow simulations in biotechnological systems. Here, we perform CFD-DEM simulations of macroalgae motion within aerated tanks to assess the light–dark cycle period as one of the most critical abiotic conditions governing the growth of photosynthetic organisms. This proof-of-concept study, which deals with the challenging problem of the fluid–structure interaction in aerated (bubbled) tanks with a highly flexible solid phase, includes a set of detailed 2D CFD simulations for two types of settings differing in the presence or absence of an inner cylinder assembly. Consequently, corresponding regression models for the cycle period are derived, and the initial hypothesis of the assembly's beneficial role is confirmed. The study investigated how variations in pressure ratio affect the leakage flow of a brush seal for both contact and clearance structures, in which the clearance is measured as the distance between the bristles tip and the rotor surface. This investigation utilized the Reynolds-Averaged-Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations alongside a two-dimensional axisymmetric anisotropic porous medium model. To verify the model's accuracy and dependability, the obtained results were compared with previous numerical results and experimental observations, showing a satisfactory level of agreement. The results indicate that the predominant pressure drop occurs downstream of the bristle pack with the clearance model exhibiting a higher leakage rate compared to the contact model. Leakage increases proportionally with the pressure ratio, while axial velocity gradually rises and radial velocity experiences a significant increase. Porous medium models are commonly used in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to simulate flow through permeable screens of various types. However, the setup of these models is often limited to replicating a pressure drop in cases where fluid inflow is orthogonal to the screen. In this work, a porous medium formulation that employs a non-diagonal Forchheimer tensor is presented. This formulation is capable of reproducing both the pressure drop and flow deflection under varying inflow angles for complex screen geometries. A general method to determine the porous model coefficients valid for both diagonal and non-diagonal Forchheimer tensors is proposed. The coefficients are calculated using a nonlinear least-squares optimisation based on an analytical solution of a special case of the Navier–Stokes equations. The applicability of the proposed method is evaluated in four different scenarios supplemented by local CFD simulations of permeable screens: wire mesh, perforated screens, air louvers, and expanded mesh panels. The practical application of this method is demonstrated in the modelling of windbreaks and permeable double-skin facades, which typically employ the aforementioned types of porous screens. This study investigates the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of supercritical open channel junction flow using two different turbulence models: k-ω shear stress transport (SST) and k-ω SST scale-adaptive simulation (SAS), in conjunction with Volume of Fluid (VOF) and mixture multiphase models. The efficacy of these models in predicting the intricate free surface fluctuation and free surface elevation in a supercritical junction is evaluated through a comprehensive analysis of time-averaged free surface data obtained from CFD simulations and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) measurements. The dimensionless Reynolds (Re) and Froude (Fr) numbers of the investigated scenario were Fr = 9 and Re = 5.1 × 104 for the main channel, and Fr = 6 and Re = 3.3 × 104 for the side channel. The results of the analysis demonstrated a satisfactory level of agreement with the experimental data. However, certain limitations associated with both CFD and LIDAR were identified. Specifically, the CFD performance was limited by the model's incapacity to consider small-scale turbulent effects and to model air bubbles smaller than the cell size while the LIDAR measurements were limited by instrument range, inability to provide insight into what is happening below the water surface, and blind spots. In this study, the influence laws of different parameters on the exclusion characteristics of hailstone and ice flake, and on the aerodynamic performance of the inlet are studied by numerical method. The motion of the hailstone and ice flake is simulated using the 6-DOF method. Results show that the inhalation of hailstone in the inlet decreases total pressure distortion by about 20%, and the total pressure recovery coefficient is essentially unchanged. Icing of the upper lip decreases the total pressure distortion of the inlet by about 22%, and the total pressure recovery coefficient decreases by 0.6%. The ice flakes on the inner and outer lip, when shed and brake by collision with the center body, will cause damage to the engine duct. The shedding and breaking of ice flake at an angle of 150° to the lip can result in a large amount of ice flake debris entering the engine duct, threatening the performance and structure of the engine in the rear. The motion characteristics of hailstone and ice flake under helicopter fuselage/rotor/inlet integration conditions are revealed. It also provides a reference on the numerical methods for the numerical study of hailstone/ice flake exclusion characteristics of helicopter fuselage/rotor/inlet integration conditions. The present review focuses on the recent studies carried out in passive micromixers for understanding the hydrodynamics and transport phenomena of miscible liquid–liquid (LL) systems in terms of pressure drop and mixing indices. First, the passive micromixers have been categorized based on the type of complexity in shape, size, and configuration. It is observed that the use of different aspect ratios of the microchannel width, presence of obstructions, flow and operating conditions, and fluid properties majorly affect the mixing characteristics and pressure drop in passive micromixers. A regime map for the micromixer selection based on optimization of mixing index (MI) and pressure drop has been identified based on the literature data for the Reynolds number (Re) range (1 ≤ Re ≤ 100). The map comprehensively summarizes the favorable, moderately favorable, or non-operable regimes of a micromixer. Further, regions for special applications of complex micromixer shapes and micromixers operating at low Re have been identified. Similarly, the operable limits for a micromixer based on pressure drop for Re range 0.1 < Re < 100,000 have been identified. A comparison of measured pressure drop with fundamentally derived analytical expressions show that Category 3 and 4 micromixers mostly have higher pressure drops, except for a few efficient ones. An MI regime map comprising diffusion, chaotic advection, and mixed advection-dominated zones has also been devised. An empirical correlation for pressure drop as a function of Reynolds number has been developed and a corresponding friction factor has been obtained. The artificially submerged cavitation water jet is effectively utilized by ejecting a high-pressure water stream into a low-pressure water stream through concentric nozzles and utilizing the cavitation phenomenon generated by the shear layer formed between the two streams. In this study, we investigated the cavitation characteristics of artificially submerged cavitation water jets by combining numerical simulations and erosion experiments. The results indicate that an appropriate standoff distance can generate more cavitation clouds on the workpiece surface, and the erosion characteristics of the artificially submerged cavitation water jet are most pronounced at a dimensionless standoff distance of SD = 30. The shear effect formed between the two jets plays a crucial role in generating initial cavitation bubbles within the flow field of the artificially submerged cavitation water jet. Moreover, increasing the convergent angle between the two jets can significantly enhance the cavitation effect between them and lead to a more substantial cavitation effect. Simultaneously, increasing the pressure of the high-pressure inner nozzle also contributes to enhancing the cavitation effect of the artificially submerged cavitation water jet. Cooling processes are responsible for a significant portion (20%) of global energy consumption and raise environmental concerns such as ozone depletion, the greenhouse effect, and high energy use. This study investigates the potential of R152a, a refrigerant with low global warming potential (GWP), as a more sustainable alternative. The performance, safety, and operational efficiency of R152a were evaluated under various conditions. Although R152a offers high performance and low GWP, its flammability necessitates caution, especially in certain mixtures. A 12-pass tube-type heat exchanger model was simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to analyze the fluid behavior within the exchanger. The pressure, density, dynamic pressure, Prandtl number, total pressure, and temperature distributions for both R152a and H2O (water) were visualized using contour plots. The simulations comprehensively examined the fluid behavior inside and outside the heat exchanger. The results revealed the influence of the temperature on the internal dynamic pressure and density of R152a. Compared with R134a, R152a demonstrated superior performance but a lower coefficient of performance (COP) than R32. Studies also suggest that R152a exhibits lower irreversibility in Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) systems than R245fa. These findings suggest that R152a holds promise for future refrigeration systems, as supported by existing research on its performance and compatibility. One study focused on optimizing the heat exchanger performance by maximizing the heat capacity and minimizing the pressure drop. This study employed a parallel-flow heat exchanger with R152a as the coolant for the hot process water. The temperature changes, pressure drops, and resulting energy efficiency and thermal performance of both fluids were analyzed. This study investigates the impact of small water bodies on outdoor temperatures in their vicinity, using a campus located in the subtropical region of Taichung City, Taiwan, as the research subject. By employing on-site measurements and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, we examined their temporal and spatial influence, as well as comparisons between actual measurements and software predictions. Key findings include the following: (1) Small water bodies exhibit discernible temperature-regulating effects on their surrounding areas. While the influence diminishes with distance, this attenuation is not stark, and is potentially constrained by the water body's patch size. (2) Regulatory effects vary between day and night. In summer, temperature reductions of up to 3.5 °C (simulated) and 3.2 °C (measured) were observed. Conversely, in winter, daytime temperatures around water bodies may rise by up to 3.9 °C. (3) Discrepancies between CFD simulations and actual measurements, influenced by fluctuations in Global Horizontal Irradiation (GHI), range from +2.5 °C to −1.8 °C. During high GHI periods, measured values surpass simulations, whereas during low or zero GHI conditions, simulations exceed measurements. Moreover, high regression analysis R2 values validate the feasibility of CFD simulations for predicting water body-induced temperature changes. The concentration of ammonia (NH3) and the temperature of the air surrounding the rabbit habitat in the farm condition basic health processes such as breathing and feeding. The indoor climate in a rabbit farm is largely conditioned by the ventilation system (air conditioning). The objective of this study was to build a numerical model based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in order to evaluate, by numerical simulations, the air dynamics of a rustic farm. After the validation of the computational model, the thermal gradient and ammonia concentration were analyzed under three wind incidence angles (0°, 45°, and 90° with respect to the horizontal Z axis of the facility). The results of the simulations showed that, in the area occupied by the rabbits (AOR), the concentration of ammonia with respect to the source was reduced by 37.3% in the most favorable case (wind direction at 45°), and 21.2% in the least favorable case (wind direction at 0°), and the indoor temperature presented a maximum difference of 2 °C with respect to the outside temperature. Climate control is a more expensive cost in rabbit farm exploitation; dynamics modulation can serve as an auxiliary tool for reducing health risks in rabbits. The use of models based on fluid dynamics allowed us to understand the efficiency of the ventilation system, which must be increased to reduce the found temperature gradient. Even though inhalation dosimetry is determined by three factors (i.e., breathing, aerosols, and the respiratory tract), the first two categories have been more widely studied than the last. Both breathing and aerosols are quantitative variables that can be easily changed, while respiratory airway morphologies are difficult to reconstruct, modify, and quantify. Although several methods are available for model reconstruction and modification, developing an anatomically accurate airway model and morphing it to various physiological conditions remains labor-intensive and technically challenging. The objective of this study is to explore the feasibility of using an adjoint–CFD model to understand airway shape effects on vapor deposition and control vapor flux into the lung. A mouth–throat model was used, with the shape of the mouth and tongue being automatically varied via adjoint morphing and the vapor transport being simulated using ANSYS Fluent coupled with a wall absorption model. Two chemicals with varying adsorption rates, Acetaldehyde and Benzene, were considered, which exhibited large differences in dosimetry sensitivity to airway shapes. For both chemicals, the maximal possible morphing was first identified and then morphology parametric studies were conducted. Results show that changing the mouth–tongue shape can alter the oral filtration by 3.2% for Acetaldehyde and 0.27% for Benzene under a given inhalation condition. The front tongue exerts a significant impact on all cases considered, while the impact of other regions varies among cases. This study demonstrates that the hybrid adjoint–CFD approach can be a practical and efficient method to investigate morphology-associated variability in the dosimetry of vapors and nanomedicines under steady inhalation. To ensure the robustness of our simulations, we systematically conducted grid convergence studies and quantified uncertainties, affirming the stability, accuracy, and reliability of our computational grid and results. Comprehensive validation against experimental data further confirmed our simulations' fidelity, emphasizing the model's fidelity. As the PIVG is set up to address the primary flow through the toroidal pipe, we focused on the interaction between the primary and secondary flows to provide insights into the relevant dynamics of the fluid. In our investigation covering Dean numbers (De) from 10 to 70, we analyzed diverse aspects, including primary flow, secondary flow patterns, pressure distribution, and the interrelation between primary and secondary flows within toroidal structures, offering a comprehensive view across this range. Our research indicated stability and fully developed fluid dynamics within the toroidal pipe under accelerated angular velocity, particularly for low De. Furthermore, we identified an optimal Dean number of 11, which corresponded to ideal dimensions for the toroidal geometry with a curvature radius of 25 mm and a cross-sectional diameter of 5 mm. This study enhances our understanding of toroidal fluid dynamics and highlights the pivotal role of CFD in optimizing toroidal vessel design for advanced navigation technologies. Electric desalination units in the crude oil refining process are becoming increasingly important with the growing trend towards heavy and poor crude oils. The oil–water mixing effect of the static mixer plays a crucial role in the electric desalination process. The present study investigated the effect of various variables, such as mixer type, number of mixing elements, washing water consumption, and oil viscosity and density on the oil–water mixing efficiency of a static mixer. In addition, this study also analyzed the effect of these variables on the salt washing process that occurs during mixing using a kinetic equation for the dissolution of inorganic salts. The results showed that the number of mixing elements was the most significant variable, followed by the amount of washing water injected. The density of the crude oil had a negligible effect. Based on these results, the use of four mixing elements in the SMX static mixer was recommended. The injection of washing water should be controlled at about 8%, while ensuring that the interfacial tension between oil and water remains below 0.01 N/m. Under these conditions, the salt washing efficiency reached 46.3%. In recent years, morphing wings have become not only a concept, but an aerodynamic solution for the aviation industry to take a step forward toward future technologies. However, continuously morphing airfoils became an interesting answer to provide green energy solutions. In this paper, the authors conducted experimental research on a continuously camber-morphing airfoil using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods. The main objective of this work was to research a variety of morphing airfoils with different camber deflections. An average velocity distribution and turbulence distribution were compared and are discussed. The two-dimensional PIV results were compared to the CFD simulations to validate the numerical method's accuracy and obtain the aerodynamic coefficient's trends. A further comparison revealed that morphing airfoils have better aerodynamic performance than conventional airfoils for very low camber deflections and create substantial amounts of drag for significant camber deflections. Three-dimensional microextrusion bioprinting technology uses pneumatics, pistons, or screws to transfer and extrude bioinks containing biomaterials and cells to print biological tissues and organs. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis can simulate the flow characteristics of bioinks in a control volume, and the effect on cell viability can be predicted by calculating the physical quantities. In this study, we developed an analysis system to predict the effect of a screw-based dispenser system (SDS) on cell viability in bioinks through rheological and CFD analyses. Furthermore, carboxymethylcellulose/alginate-based bioinks were used for the empirical evaluation of high-viscous bioinks. The viscosity of bioinks was determined by rheological measurement, and the viscosity coefficient for the CFD analysis was derived from a correlation equation by non-linear regression analysis. The mass flow rate derived from the analysis was successfully validated by comparison with that from the empirical evaluation. Finally, the cell viability was confirmed after bioprinting with bioinks containing C2C12 cells, suggesting that the developed SDS may be suitable for application in the field of bioengineering. The microclimate environment can be conveniently controlled with accuracy by plant incubators, in which the cuttings propagation method can efficiently enhance seedling production. To ensure air flow evenly throughout the incubator, the scientific design of the air inlet is crucial. This study utilized a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to simulate the airflow patterns in a culture layer under different air inlet conditions. Furthermore, the optimal design parameters were determined by way of response surface methodology (RSM) and the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Adopting the optimal parameters, a prototype was manufactured, and a cuttings experiment was carried out with apple cuttings in the incubator. The results showed that the optimal air inlet radius is 90 mm, the optimal air inlet height is 188 mm, and the optimal uniform flow plate hole diameter is 13 mm. Meanwhile, the apple cuttings were able to root. Therefore, this incubator with optimal parameters can be used for cuttings. Changing the metallic card clothing on a carding machine is costly when the spinning mills want to card different fibers from cotton to terylene or vice versa. This article proposes a newly developed cylinder card clothing compatible with cotton and terylene fibers by Nb alloying of AISI 1090 steel so that the spinning mills can change the type of fiber without changing the card clothing. Based on an idea developed from classical carding balance theory to study the adaptability of the cylinder card clothing for cotton and terylene fibers, the wall shear stress was used as the basis for compatibility analysis of carding behavior and bearing capacity with cotton and terylene fibers and as the focus of this study. Nb alloying of AISI 1090 steel showed good wear resistance in carding areas after heat treatment with high hardness above 840 Hv0.2 and extremely fine grain grade of 13.5 class, which increased about 25% compared to conventional 80 WV. The testing results in the spinning mills, including one cotton and two terylene fibers, showed good performance with this newly developed card clothing. Centrifugal pumps are used extensively in various everyday applications. The occurrence of corrosion phenomena during operation often leads to the failure of a pump's operating components, such as the impeller. The present research study examines the utilization of composite materials for fabricating centrifugal pump components using additive manufacturing as an effort to fabricate corrosion resistant parts. To achieve the latter two nanocomposite materials, carbon fiber reinforced polyamide and carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide were compared with two metal alloys, cast iron and brass, which are currently used in pump impeller manufacturing. The mechanical properties of the materials are extracted by performing a series of experiments, such as uniaxial tensile tests, nanoindentation and scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of the specimen's fracture area. Then, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is performed using various impeller designs to determine the fluid pressure exerted on the impeller's geometry during its operation. Finally, the maximum power rating of an impeller that can be made from such composites will be determined using a static finite element model (FEM). The FEM static model is developed by integrating the data collected from the experiments with the results obtained from the CFD analysis. This study aims to investigate the influence of wheel configurations on hydrodynamic resistance of an amphibious vessel through experiments and simulations. To evaluate the resistance performance associated with wheel attachments, three configurations were examined: vessel without attachments, with caterpillars, and with both caterpillars and shoe−paddles. A comprehensive series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted for these attachment types, complemented by experimental validations. The Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) model was employed in CFD simulations to capture the free surface movement, and the Dynamic Fluid–Body Interaction (DFBI) model was adopted to represent the two-degree-of-freedom motion of the vessel, specifically trim and sinkage. The total resistance derived from CFD simulations was calculated across a range of Froude numbers (Fns), including the design speed of the target vessel, and validated through model tests conducted in a wave basin equipped with a towing facility. The analysis indicated a general increase in resistance when attachments were added to the amphibious vessel. Remarkably, at the design speed (Fn = 0.27), the total resistance with both caterpillars and shoe−paddles exceeded that of the configuration without any attachments by more than 75.7%. When tidal turbines are deployed in water areas with significant waves, assessing the surface wave effects becomes imperative. Understanding the dynamic impact of wave–current conditions on the fluid dynamic performance of tidal turbines is crucial. This paper aims to establish a fundamental understanding of the influence of surface waves on tidal turbines. OpenFOAM, an open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) library platform, is utilized to predict the performance of current turbine under waves and currents. This research investigates the effects of two critical wave parameters, wave height and wavelength, on the fluid dynamics and wake structures of current turbine. Additionally, this study explores the influence of various submersion depths on turbine performance. The findings indicate that, under various wave conditions, the turbine's average power coefficient remains constant, but significant fluctuations are shown. Increasing submersion depth can mitigate the impact of waves. However, in regions characterized by longer wavelengths, altering the submersion depth has limited effects on turbine performance. Foundry Degassing Units (FDU) are used for refining aluminum alloys. For an ideal refining process using an FDU unit, it is necessary to select several parameters, which are linked to each other. For a rotary impeller, we searched for several parameters, such as its optimal shape, speed in the liquid alloy, and distance from the bottom of the refining ladle, where the aforementioned parameters contribute to the overall wear and life of the rotor and, consequently, of the rotor shaft. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method can be used to determine the above-mentioned parameters. Computational rhinology is a specialized branch of biomechanics leveraging engineering techniques for mathematical modelling and simulation to complement the medical field of rhinology. Computational rhinology has already contributed significantly to advancing our understanding of the nasal function, including airflow patterns, mucosal cooling, particle deposition, and drug delivery, and is foreseen as a crucial element in, e.g., the development of virtual surgery as a clinical, patient-specific decision support tool. The current paper delves into the field of computational rhinology from a nasal airflow perspective, highlighting the use of computational fluid dynamics to enhance diagnostics and treatment of breathing disorders. This paper consists of three distinct parts—an introduction to and review of the field of computational rhinology, a review of the published literature on in vitro and in silico studies of nasal airflow, and the presentation and analysis of previously unpublished high-fidelity CFD simulation data of in silico rhinomanometry. While the two first parts of this paper summarize the current status and challenges in the application of computational tools in rhinology, the last part addresses the gross disagreement commonly observed when comparing in silico and in vivo rhinomanometry results. It is concluded that this discrepancy cannot readily be explained by CFD model deficiencies caused by poor choice of turbulence model, insufficient spatial or temporal resolution, or neglecting transient effects. Under the trend in climate change, global warming, and the increasingly serious urban heat island effect, promoting urban wind corridor planning to reduce urban temperature and mitigate the effect of urban heat islands has received widespread attention in many cities. With emerging awareness of the need to explicitly incorporate climate considerations into urban planning and design, integrating current spatial analysis and simulation tools to enhance urban wind corridor planning to obtain the best urban ventilation effect has become an increasingly important research topic in green city development. However, how to systematically carry out urban wind corridor planning by employing related technology and simulation tools is a topic that needs to be explored urgently in both theory and practice. Taking Zhumadian City in China as an example, this study proposes a method and planning approach that uses remote sensing (RS), geographic information system (GIS), and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in an integrated way to understand urban landscape and to conduct urban wind corridor planning. The research results reveal that the urban form of Zhumadian City favors the development of urban wind corridors, and that the railway lines and some major roads in the city have the potential to be developed as the city's main wind corridors. However, there are still ventilation barriers resulting from the existing land use model and building layout patterns that need to be adjusted. In terms of local-level analysis, the CFD simulation analysis also reveals that some common building layout patterns may result in environments with poor ventilation. Finally, based on the results of our empirical analysis and local planning environment, specific suggestions are provided on how to develop appropriate strategies for urban wind corridor planning and adjustments related to land use planning and building layout patterns in order to mitigate the impact of the urban heat island effect. To activate the boundary layer in Active Flow Control (AFC) applications, the use of pulsating flow has notable energy advantages over constant blowing/suction jet injections. For a given AFC application, five parameters, jet location and width, inclination angle, frequency of injection, and the momentum coefficient, need to be tuned. Presently, two main devices are capable of injecting pulsating flow with a momentum coefficient sufficient to delay the boundary layer separation: these are zero-net-mass-flow Actuators (ZNMFAs) and fluidic oscillators (FOs). In the present study, a novel FO configuration is analyzed for the first time at relatively high Reynolds numbers, and fluid is considered to be incompressible. After obtaining the typical linear correlation between the incoming Reynolds number and the outlet flow oscillating frequency, the effects of dimensional modifications on outlet width and mixing chamber wedge inclination angle are addressed. Modifications of the outlet width were observed to create large variations in FO performance. The origin of self-sustained oscillations is also analyzed in the present manuscript and greatly helps in clarifying the forces acting on the jet inside the mixing chamber. In fact, we can conclude by saying that the current FO configuration is pressure-driven, although the mass flow forces appear to be much more relevant than in previously studied FO configurations. Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is a therapeutic practice involving brief exposure to extreme cold, typically lasting one to four minutes. Given that WBC sessions often occur in groups, there is a hypothesis that cumulative heat dissipation from the group significantly affects the thermo-aerodynamic conditions of the cryotherapy chamber. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is employed to investigate thermal exchanges between three subjects (one man, two women) and a cryotherapy chamber at −92 °C during a 3-minute session. The investigation reveals that collective body heat loss significantly influences temperature fields within the cabin, causing global modifications in aerodynamic and thermal conditions. For example, a temperature difference of 6.7 °C was calculated between the average temperature in a cryotherapy chamber with a single subject and that with three subjects. A notable finding is that, under an identical protocol, the thermal response varies among individuals based on their position in the chamber. The aerodynamic and thermal characteristics of the cryotherapy chamber impact the heat released at the body's surface and the skin-cooling rate needed to achieve recommended analgesic thresholds. This study highlights the complexity of physiological responses in WBC and emphasizes the importance of considering individual positions within the chamber for optimizing therapeutic benefits. In order to investigate the impact of environmental temperature and atmospheric humidity on the leakage and diffusion of hydrogen fluoride (HF) gas, this study focused on the real scenario of an HF chemical industrial park. Based on the actual dispersion scenario of HF gas, a proportionally scaled-down experimental platform for HF gas leakage was established to validate the accuracy and feasibility of numerical simulations under complex conditions. Using the validated model, the study calculated the complex scenarios of HF leakage and diffusion within the temperature range of 293 K to 313 K and the humidity range of 0% to 100%. The simulation results indicated that different environmental temperatures had a relatively small impact on the hazardous areas (the lethal area, severe injury area, light injury area, and maximum allowable concentration (MAC) area) formed by HF gas leakage. At 600 s of dispersion, the fluctuation range of hazardous area sizes under different temperature conditions was between 3.11% and 13.07%. In contrast to environmental temperature, atmospheric relative humidity had a more significant impact on the dispersion trend of HF leakage. Different relative humidity levels mainly affected the areas of the lethal zone, light injury zone, and MAC zone. When HF continued to leak and disperse for 600 s, compared to 0% relative humidity, 100% relative humidity reduced the lethal area by 35.7%, while increasing the light injury area and MAC area by 27.26% and 111.6%, respectively. The impact on the severe injury area was relatively small, decreasing by 1.68%. The vortices, backflow, and siltation caused by sediment-laden flow are detrimental to the safe and efficient operation of pumping stations. To explore the effects of water–sediment two-phase flow on the velocity field, vorticity field, and sediment distribution within intake structures, field tests and numerical simulations were conducted in this study with consideration for the sediment concentration, flow rate, and start-up combination. We applied a non-contact laser scanner and ultrasonic Doppler velocimetry to obtain the field data and reverse modeling of the three-dimensional model of the intake structure under siltation. A multiphase flow model based on the Euler–Euler approach combined with the k-ε turbulence model was adopted for numerical simulation under 10 working conditions, and the reliability was verified with field data. The results indicate that sediment promotes the evolution of coaxial vortices into larger-scale spiral vortices along the water depth, and the process of sediment deposition is controlled by the range, intensity, and flow velocity of the backflow zone. Furthermore, the maximum volume fraction of the near-bottom sediment increased by 202.01% compared to the initial state. The increase in flow rate exacerbates the turbulence of the flow field. Although the increase in sediment concentration benefits the flow diffusion, it further promotes sediment deposition. This study provides a new idea for modeling complex surfaces and considers different operating conditions. Efficient implementation of clean energy technologies is paramount, with mobile solar PV systems on trailers (MSPTs) emerging as pivotal solutions, particularly in regions with limited power grid access. This endeavour is vital for meeting escalating electricity demands and aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), aimed at ensuring dependable and sustainable energy provision in developing countries. This study investigates the aerodynamic behaviour of a designed MSPT using numerical simulation and experimental methods, thereby offering optimization potential for MSPT design and enhancing overall performance and reliability. Specifically, the study focuses on the effects of wind velocity and tilt angles on the drag and lift forces, as well as drag and lift coefficients on the panel used in the MSPT system. The overall wind force on the entire MSPT, including nine large solar PV panels, is scrutinised, considering combined wind flow and system geometry effects. The numerical investigations were conducted using ANSYS-Fluent software (version 2022/R2) and experimental testing was performed within the C15-10 Wind Tunnel, utilizing scaled-down models to validate the accuracy of the simulation. The findings from the numerical investigations showed an increased turbulence caused by gaps between panels, resulting in almost 62% higher suction flow velocity and 22% higher suction pressure compared to a single panel. Drag and lift forces on the entire MSPT were approximately 6.7 and 7.8 times greater than those on a single panel with the same 30-degree tilt angle, respectively. The findings revealed that scaling forces on a single panel is insufficient for accurately predicting the aerodynamic forces on the entire MSPT. With the increasing popularity of yachting sports and races comes the need to develop a more advanced and efficient propulsion device. Significant improvement can be made when using a mainly lift-driven propulsion source, known as a wing sail. This idea, dating back as far as the mid-70s, is nowadays regaining interest as a propulsion system in multihull, high-performance racing vessels (for instance, the AC50 and AC72 America's Cup yacht classes). This article documents 2D and 3D numerical analyses of wing sail systems imitating those of an AC72 racing yacht class. It depicts methods employed in two- and three-dimensional steady-state flow simulations, compares systems equipped with various geometries of mainsails, and details a comprehensive examination of the airflow around the vessel using spatial analyses. Numerical calculations were carried out using ANSYS CFX and ANSYS Fluent (with overset feature) for 2D and 3D models, respectively. Biomimetics seeks to harness innovative inspiration from the biological world. Through the imitation of the structure, behavior, and functions of organisms, biomimetics enables the creation of efficient and unique designs. These designs are aimed at enhancing the speed, reliability, and maneuverability of underwater vehicles, as well as reducing drag and noise. CFD technology, which is capable of precisely predicting and simulating fluid flow behaviors, plays a crucial role in optimizing the structural design of underwater vehicles, thereby significantly enhancing their hydrodynamic and kinematic performances. Combining biomimetics and CFD technology introduces a novel approach to underwater vehicle design and unveils broad prospects for research in natural science and engineering applications. Lead recycling is very important for reducing environmental pollution risks and damages. Liquid lead is recovered from exhaust batteries inside stirred batch reactors; the process requires melting to be cleaned. Nevertheless, it is necessary to establish parameters for evaluating mixing to improve the efficiency of the industrial practices. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has become a powerful tool to analyze industrial processes for reducing operating costs, avoiding potential damages, and improving the equipment's performance. Thus, the present work is focused on simulating the fluid hydrodynamics inside a lead-stirred reactor monitoring the distribution of an injected tracer in order to find the best injection point. Then, different injected points are placed on a control plane for evaluation; these are evaluated one by one by monitoring the tracer concentration at a group of points inside the batch. The analyzed reactor is a symmetrical, vertical batch reactor with two geometrical sections: one cylindrical body and a semi-spherical bottom. Here, one impeller with four flat blades in a shaft is used for lead stirring. The tracer concentration on the monitoring points is measured and averaged for evaluating the efficiency inside the tank reactor. Hydrodynamics theory and a comparison between the concentration profiles and distribution of tracer curves are used to demonstrate both methods' similarities. Then, the invariability of the tracer concentration on the monitoring points is adopted as the main parameter to evaluate the mixing, and the best injection point is found as a function of the shortest mixing time. This paper delves into precisely measuring liquid levels using a specific methodology with diverse real-world applications such as process optimization, quality control, fault detection and diagnosis, etc. It demonstrates the process of liquid level measurement by employing a chaotic observer, which senses multiple variables within a system. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is meticulously created using ANSYS to explore the laminar flow characteristics of liquids comprehensively. The methodology integrates the system identification technique to formulate a third-order state–space model that characterizes the system. Based on this mathematical model, we develop estimators inspired by Lorenz and Rossler's principles to gauge the liquid level under specified liquid temperature, density, inlet velocity, and sensor placement conditions. The estimated results are compared with those of an artificial neural network (ANN) model. These ANN models learn and adapt to the patterns and features in data and catch non-linear relationships between input and output variables. The accuracy and error minimization of the developed model are confirmed through a thorough validation process. Experimental setups are employed to ensure the reliability and precision of the estimation results, thereby underscoring the robustness of our liquid-level measurement methodology. In summary, this study helps to estimate unmeasured states using the available measurements, which is essential for understanding and controlling the behavior of a system. Structures in proximity subjected to a substantial lateral load (e.g., wind and earthquakes) can lead to a significant hazard known as structural pounding. If not properly mitigated, such impacts can lead to local and global damage (i.e., structural failure). Mitigation approaches can include providing a suitable separation gap distance between structures, installing adequate shock absorbers, or designing the structure for the additional pounding impact loads. Wind-induced pounding of structures can be of higher risk to buildings due to large deflections developed during wind events. The current study develops various mathematical formulas to determine the suitable separation distance between structures in proximity to avoid pounding. The developed procedure relies first on wind-load evaluations using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models. Then, the extracted wind loads from the LES are applied to finite element method models to determine the building deflections. Various building heights, wind velocities, and flexibility levels are examined to prepare a training database for developing the mathematical formulas. A genetic algorithm is utilised to correlate the required separation gap distance to the varying parameters of the tall buildings. It is installed on an automatic machine in which wine caps are stacked and shot consecutively into a rotating cylinder by an air jet. This process is very noisy; hence, this study aimed to investigate possible geometric variations of the nozzle that can reduce the emitted noise. First, the nozzle was tested in a laboratory to measure the air consumptions at different supply pressures. Subsequently, 3D models of the nozzle and its variations were created and used for computational fluid dynamics simulations. Different boundary conditions were set, first to validate the model and compare it with the experimental test results, and then to simulate the real working conditions and determine the geometry that is less noisy while maintaining the velocity peak. Among the various possibilities, shortening the final ducts of the nozzle appears to be the most promising solution. These modified nozzles could be easily added to current machines to provide immediate benefits, and this study represents a promising start for action on other machines in which this type of device is present. This study presents a pressure variation model (PVM) derived from the regression analysis of dynamic pressure computed through numerical analysis to estimate the velocity of underwater vehicles. Furthermore, the drift angle estimation algorithm was developed using predicted velocities from PVM and pressure sensor differences. This approach estimates the single-motion states of underwater vehicles, such as straight, turning, and gliding. Furthermore, it confirms the viability of state estimation even in multiple motions involving turning and gliding motion with a drift angle and spiral motion. This article presents computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of the flow processes at a certain specimen of an external gear pump. The purpose of the developed two-dimensional (2D) CFD model is to carry out a numerical study to obtain the main characteristics of the pump flow rate, especially the flow rate as a function of the pressure and the flow rate as a function of the time. A numerical study was carried out at forty-two different operating modes that were expressed as a variation of two parameters: rotational frequency (950–1450 min−1) and pressure (5–150 bar). The validation of the numerical results was carried out through an experimental study. For this purpose, a laboratory experimental setup equipped with a modern data acquisition (DAQ) system was designed and implemented. It allows the gear pump to be tested at the same operating modes as the numerical study. A validation analysis was performed by comparing the numerical and experimental results using the average relative error index (FIT). A detailed description of the 2D CFD model development (CAD model, mesh, general settings, boundary conditions, etc.) is provided. Based on the 2D CFD model, an original methodology was proposed to take into account the influence of the discharge channels on the displacement volume of the pump by adjusting the face width of the gears. Despite the limitations of the simple 2D CFD model, which are discussed in this article, a very good match between numerical and experimental results is analyzed by calculating the FIT level, which is in the range of 93–97%. Land subsidence is a global challenge that enhances the vulnerability of aquifers where climate change and driving forces are occurring simultaneously. To comprehensively analyze this issue, integrated modeling tools are essential. This study advances the simulation of subsidence using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD); it assessed the effects of exploitation and recharge of groundwater on the vertical displacement of coarse and fine sands in a laboratory-scale aquifer. A model was developed by integrating the Navier–Stokes equations to study the groundwater flow and Terzaghi's law for the vertical displacement of sands. The boundary conditions used were Dirichlet based on the changes in the hydraulic head over time. The specific storage coefficient was used to calibrate the model. The findings confirmed that subsidence occurs at slower rates in soil with fine sands with average particle diameters of 0.39 mm than in coarse sands with average particle diameters of 0.67 mm. The maximum discrepancy between the experimental and the numerical reaffirms that CFD platforms can be used to simulate subsidence dynamics and potentially allow the simultaneous simulation of other dynamics. Understanding and modeling a dam breaching process is an essential investigation, because it aims to minimize the flood's hazards, and its impact on people and structures, using suitable mitigation plans. In the current study, three-dimensional numerical modeling is carried out using the FLOW-3D HYDRO program to investigate the impact of various factors, including the dam grain size materials, crest width, inflow discharge, and tail water depth on the dam breach process, particularly the peak outflow, and the erosion rate. The results show that changing the grain size of the dam material from fine sand to medium and coarse sand leads to an increase in the peak outflow discharge by 16.0% and the maximum erosion rate by 20.0%. Furthermore, increasing the dam crest width by 40% leads to a decrease in the peak outflow by 3.0% and the maximum erosion rates by 4.50%. Moreover, increasing the inflow discharge by 25.0% increases the peak outflow by 23.0% and the maximum erosion rates by 21.0%. Finally, increasing the tail water depth by 50.0% leads to decreasing the peak outflow by 4.50% and the maximum erosion rate by 43.0%. The study findings are considered of high importance for dam design and operation control. A fully coupled electro-thermo-mechanical CFD model is developed and applied to illuminate the crucial factors influencing the overall performance of a solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC), particularly the configuration and geometry parameters of its inter-connector (IC), comprising ribs and channels. Expanding on a selected width ratio of 4:3, the gradient ribs/channels are further investigated to assess electrochemical and thermo-mechanical performance. It is elucidated that, while maintaining constant maximum temperature and thermal stress levels, employing a non-regular geometry IC with gradient channels may yield a 30% enhancement in hydrogen production. Trash racks installed at hydropower plants cause head losses that reduce energy output. Previous research has thoroughly investigated head losses through both experimental and field studies. However, only a limited number of numerical studies have been performed, which have shown significant simplifications in terms of model complexity. In this study, the head loss coefficients ξ of circular bar trash racks (CBTRs) were analyzed using 3D Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Specifically, a single submerged bar oriented perpendicular to the flow direction was studied under homogeneous inflow conditions while (i) the blocking ratio P was varied between 0.043 and 0.444, and (ii) the flow velocity U was varied between 0.3 and 1.0 m/s. The model parameters were selected primarily based on the extensive literature on flow past circular cylinders, particularly at a Reynolds bar number Reb of 3900. To ensure the validity of the parameters, systematic independence tests were performed, including simulations with three and five bars in the computational domain. The results confirmed the suitability of 3D LES as an appropriate tool to determine ξ of CBTRs. In general, ξ decreased continuously with decreasing P and increased with increasing U when Reb ≥ 3981, which is consistent with comparable flow parameters observed in previous studies of flow past circular cylinders. Notably, the study found that the empirical formulas used for comparison tended to underestimate ξ when P was relatively low.
