Aroma essential oils contain ingredients that are beneficial to the human body. A gas sensor array is required to monitor the concentration of these essential oil components to regulate their concentration by air conditioning systems. Therefore, we investigated the discrimination ability and concentration measurement accuracy of 14 effective components, including four aroma essential oils (lavender, melissa, tea tree, and eucalyptus), from a single gas sample and mixtures of two gases using sensor arrays. To obtain our data, we used two sensor arrays comprising commercially available semiconductor sensors and our developed semiconductor sensors. For machine learning, principal component analysis was used to visualize the dataset obtained from the sensor signals, and an artificial neural network was used for a detailed analysis. Our developed sensor array, which included sensors that possessed excellent sensor responses to 14 effective components and combined different semiconductive sensor principles, showed a better discrimination and prediction accuracy than the commercially available sensors investigated in this study. The efficient management of urban water distribution networks is crucial for public health and urban development. One of the major challenges is the quick and accurate detection of leaks, which can lead to water loss, infrastructure damage, and environmental hazards. Many existing leak detection methods are ineffective, especially in complex and aging pipeline networks. If these limitations are not overcome, it can result in a chain of infrastructure failures, exacerbating damage, increasing repair costs, and causing water shortages and public health risks. The leak issue is further complicated by increasing urban water demand, climate change, and population growth. Therefore, there is an urgent need for intelligent systems that can overcome the limitations of traditional methodologies and leverage sophisticated data analysis and machine learning technologies. In this study, we propose a reliable and advanced method for detecting leaks in water pipes using a framework based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks combined with autoencoders. The framework is designed to manage the temporal dimension of time-series data and is enhanced with ensemble learning techniques, making it sensitive to subtle signals indicating leaks while robustly dealing with noise signals. Through the integration of signal processing and pattern recognition, the machine learning-based model addresses the leak detection problem, providing an intelligent system that enhances environmental protection and resource management. This study examines the impact of large-scale suburban new town development on the commuting time of college and graduate students in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Household travel diary data from 2016 were analyzed to categorize residential areas and quantify the impacts on commute time to school. Multiple linear regression modeling is used to explore the relationships between development type, individual, and household characteristics and their impact on commute times. The results of the study show that students living in new urban areas have significantly longer commute times than those living in central Seoul, highlighting the differences that result from urban expansion policies targeting middle-class housing. These results suggest that the development of suburban new towns, which was intended to alleviate the housing shortage, has inadvertently lengthened the daily commute time of many students. Thus, a critical reassessment of suburban development strategies is needed to better balance the advantages of residential neighborhoods against the educational and living costs associated with increased travel time. In this paper, we address the comment provided by Zheng and Palffy-Muhoray regarding our previous work on computing the closest approach distance of two ellipsoids. Additionally, we present experimental results that assess the numerical error bounds in the authors' own implementation of the analytic solution for the closest approach distance of two ellipses. We report very rare cases where the closest approach distances of two ellipses are erroneously calculated as zero, which is impossible given that the radii of the ellipses are not zero. This paper presents a novel method for computing an orthonormal tangent space at every vertex of a triangular mesh provided with texture coordinates, which is essential in normal mapping. Our method employs least-squares estimation of rotation between two sets of corresponding points: one set from the positions of the 1-ring neighbors of a vertex in texture space and the other set from their corresponding positions in world space. This optimal rotation represents a local space transformation that defines the tangent space at the vertex. Consequently, our method ensures that the resulting tangent space is inherently orthonormal, eliminating the need for intricate operations such as averaging and orthonormalization, which are required in the previous methods. In addition, we introduce texture space alignment of triangles to address vertices on seams, which are inevitable in texture mapping to a closed surface mesh. The effects of chemical composition and solidification rate on the solidification behavior of high-Cr white irons were investigated through directional solidification. Increasing the solidification rate in hypoeutectic alloys caused finer dendrite-arm spacing, as expected. The eutectic structure, which formed in the interdendritic region, was comprised of M7C3 and austenite; however, secondary dendrite arms of hypoeutectic alloys contained a few M7C3 particles that solidified prior to the eutectic structure. The transition from cellular to dendritic solidification occurred at a solidification rate between 50 µm/s and 100 µm/s in a near-eutectic alloy. In the near-eutectic alloy with cellular solidification, a directionally arrayed in-situ composite of M7C3/austenite formed within the cell. Speckle-like features appeared in the intercellular region due to M23C6 carbide precipitation during subsequent cooling after freezing. Like dendrite-arm spacing in hypoeutectic alloys, the inter-speckle spacing and the inter-fiber spacing became finer with an increasing solidification rate in the cellular solidification range. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of the STANDARD i-Q COVID-19 Ag Test, which was developed to detect viral antigens, using nasal and oral swabs. Sixty positive and 100 negative samples were analyzed. We determined the distribution of the Ct values according to the day of sample collection after symptom onset, the diagnostic performance of the total samples and subgroups separated by Ct value or time of sample collection, and the Ct value at which maximal accuracy was expected. No differences were observed in Ct values, except for the samples obtained on the day of symptom onset. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the oral swabs were 75.0 and 100.0%, respectively, whereas those of the nasal swabs were 85.0 and 98.0%, respectively. The sensitivity was higher in samples with a high viral load collected earlier than those collected later, although the difference was not significant. False-negative results were confirmed in all samples with a Ct value ≥ 30.0. These results indicate that tests using oral and nasal swabs are helpful for diagnosing acute symptomatic cases with suspected high viral loads. The gut microbiome is a diverse bacterial community in the human gastrointestinal tract that plays important roles in a variety of biological processes. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) are produced through fermentation of dietary fiber. Certain microbes in the gut are responsible for producing SCFAs such as acetate, propionate and butyrate. An imbalance in gut microbiome diversity can lead to metabolic disorders and inflammation-related diseases. Changes in SCFA levels and associated microbiota were observed in IBD, suggesting an association between SCFAs and disease. The gut microbiota and SCFAs affect reactive oxygen species (ROS) associated with IBD. Gut microbes and SCFAs are closely related to IBD, and it is important to study them further. Schizophrenia, a severe mental illness affecting about 1% of the population, manifests during young adulthood, leading to abnormal mental function and behavior. Its multifactorial etiology involves genetic factors, experiences of adversity, infection, and gene–environment interactions. Emerging research indicates that maternal infection or stress during pregnancy may also increase schizophrenia risk in offspring. Recent research on the gut–brain axis highlights the gut microbiome's potential influence on central nervous system (CNS) function and mental health, including schizophrenia. The gut microbiota, located in the digestive system, has a significant role to play in human physiology, affecting immune system development, vitamin synthesis, and protection against pathogenic bacteria. Disruptions to the gut microbiota, caused by diet, medication use, environmental pollutants, and stress, may lead to imbalances with far-reaching effects on CNS function and mental health. Of interest are short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), metabolic byproducts produced by gut microbes during fermentation. SCFAs can cross the blood–brain barrier, influencing CNS activity, including microglia and cytokine modulation. The dysregulation of neurotransmitters produced by gut microbes may contribute to CNS disorders, including schizophrenia. This review explores the potential relationship between SCFAs, the gut microbiome, and schizophrenia. Simple Summary: Autoimmune gastritis (AIG), characterized by antibody production against gastric parietal cells, is associated with a higher incidence of neuroendocrine tumors and gastric cancers. Metachronous gastric neoplasms become a major concern after endoscopic resection (ER) for early gastric cancer lesions. We assessed the impact of AIG on MGN following ER. The AIG group had higher MGN rates (45.0% vs. 18.3%), with similar patterns of metachronous tumors. Multivariate analysis revealed AIG (HR 3.32) was linked to MGN occurrence. Because AIG patients face a greater MGN risk post-ER, positive anti-parietal cell antibody test results necessitate vigilant monitoring and management for timely treatment. Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is characterized by antibody production against the gastric parietal cells, reducing the number of functional parietal cells. It is also associated with an increased susceptibility to gastric neuroendocrine tumors and gastric cancer. Endoscopic resection (ER) is an effective treatment for early gastric cancer; however, metachronous gastric neoplasms (MGN) can develop. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical effect of AIG on the occurrence of MGN after ER for gastric neoplasms. We retrospectively analyzed patients who underwent ER for gastric neoplasms. Patients with multiple lesions, recurrent lesions, or a history of partial gastrectomy were excluded. The presence of AIG was determined using anti-parietal cell antibody (APCA) testing. Follow-up endoscopy and metachronous tumor occurrence rates were compared between the AIG and non-AIG groups. Of the 569 patients, 282 underwent APCA testing and 20 (7.1%) were diagnosed with AIG. The incidence of MGN was significantly higher in the AIG group than in the non-AIG group (45.0% vs. 18.3%); however, the MGN occurrence pattern was similar between the two groups. Multivariate analysis revealed that AIG (HR 3.32, 95% CI 1.55–7.10, p = 0.002) and a higher body mass index (HR 1.16, 95% CI 1.06–1.27, p = 0.002) were independent factors significantly associated with the occurrence of MGN. Patients with AIG have a higher risk of metachronous lesion occurrence after ER for gastric neoplasms. Positive results of APCA testing have independent clinical implications for predicting MGN. Over the past few decades, there has been much research on additive manufacturing in both the academic and the industrial spheres to overcome the limitations of conventional manufacturing methods, thereby enabling the production of complex designs for improved performance. To achieve this purpose, it is crucial to meticulously set suitable laser parameters within the context of microstructural characteristics, including type and fraction of defects, texture development, residual stress, and grain size, etc. In the present study, we focused on recrystallization behavior, a type of relaxation process for accumulated thermal stress during the L-PBF process, as a function of laser power applied on the L-PBF process. The laser power has significant effects on the amount of recrystallized grain, directly related to the recrystallization temperature. Within the range of laser power used in this study, a downward trend was observed in the recrystallization temperature as the laser power increased from 370 W to 390 W. This trend suggests that higher laser power leads to a faster cooling rate, influenced by the volume of melt pool as well as the amount of heat dissipation from the melt pool, resulting in higher thermal stress during the process. This paper presents a novel and efficient solution procedure to improve 3D solid finite element analysis with an enrichment scheme. To this end, we employ finite elements enriched by polynomial cover functions, which can expand their solution space without requiring mesh refinement or additional nodes. To facilitate this solution procedure, an error estimation method and cover function selection scheme for 3D solid finite element analysis are developed. This enables the identification of nodes with suboptimal solution accuracy, allowing for the adaptive application of cover functions in a systematic and efficient manner. Furthermore, a significant advantage of this procedure is its consistency, achieved by excluding arbitrary coefficients from the formulations employed. The effectiveness of the proposed procedure is demonstrated through several numerical examples. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent condition characterized by lipid accumulation in hepatocytes with low alcohol consumption. The development of sterile inflammation, which occurs in response to a range of cellular stressors or injuries, has been identified as a major contributor to the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Recent studies of the pathogenesis of NAFLD reported the newly developed roles of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). These molecules activate pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), which are placed in the infiltrated neutrophils, dendritic cells, monocytes, or Kupffer cells. DAMPs cause the activation of PRRs, which triggers a number of immunological responses, including the generation of cytokines that promote inflammation and the localization of immune cells to the site of the damage. In the context of China's New Urbanization Strategy, it is of great practical significance to study rural–urban population migration from the perspective of house purchases by rural households. In this paper, the Huai'an Rural Survey Dataset (872,414 households) was used to study the heterogeneity of rural households' house purchases in different classes of urban destinations, and its influencing factors were analyzed with GeoDetector. The results show that the urban house purchase destinations preferred by farmers were county towns, townships, foreign cities, and metropolitan areas, indicating that in situ urbanization has become the main path of urbanization for farmers in Huai'an. Among the environmental influencing factors, the rural environment had the greatest influence on house purchases locally (in the township and county town), and this influence decreased with the outward shift of house purchase destinations. The housing environment, the settlement environment, and the population and family environment were the main environmental impact elements. The natural environment and the policy environment had little influence on the house-purchasing behavior of farmers, and the location environment was critical in exotic locations (metropolitan areas and foreign cities). Therefore, this paper argues that a higher demand for housing is growing in China's less developed rural areas, creating a situation in which the metropolitan area is the core and the county town is the main contributor. In terms of policy improvements, it is important to pay more attention to small cities such as counties and to offer housing concessions and welfare to "new citizens" from rural areas, as well as to significantly improve the housing, earnings, and public service environment for those who prefer to stay in the countryside. The crystalline structure is a biomass recalcitrance factor that hinders chemical or biological access to degrade the plant cell-wall structure. However, controversy persists over whether a ratio of the crystalline region, the crystallinity index, is a critical biomass recalcitrance factor. In this study, an alkaline treatment modified from mercerization was adopted to alleviate the crystalline structure in the xylem of eucalyptus, along with hemicellulose and lignin removal via autohydrolysis and acid–chlorite treatment, respectively. Then, the glucose yield of the treated solid residues was used as a parameter of biomass recalcitrance. The alkaline treatment successfully reduced the crystallinity index, and the maximal reduction ratio was 84.9% when using an 8% sodium hydroxide solution. However, the reduction ratio of the crystallinity index was dependent on the remaining lignin content in the treated solid residues. Additionally, the lignin removal ratio showed critical influence to improve the glucose yield that was even observed in the treated solid residue having a low reduction ratio of the crystallinity index. Consequently, the cellulose crystalline structure is minimally involved with biomass recalcitrance, especially cellulase activity, at least in eucalyptus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the potato chip industry is booming, and distinct chip-processing clones have been released over the past 60 years, the genetic architecture of their chip-processing characteristics remains largely unknown. Case-control genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with SolCAP SNP array data for chip-processing clones versus all other market classes in the 393-line potato diversity panel were performed using the GWASpoly R package, enabling detection of significant signals on chromosome 10. Our results were replicated using internal replication of a strata-corrected 190-line panel. Furthermore, the genomic scans employing selective sweep approaches such as the cross-population composite likelihood ratio method (XP-CLR) and PCAdapt redetected the same signals as those in our GWAS. Through applications of four selective sweep approaches, various genetic variants were found across the genome that had been differentially selected. These genomic regions under selection along with transcriptomic data analysis are involved in carbohydrate metabolism-related genes or loci and transcription factors, indicating to be associated with the improvement of chip-processing performance of potato cultivars. Kompetitive allele-specific PCR (KASP) assays were designed for the causal SNPs to use in validating the chip-processing clones. Recently, we reported that device performance degradation mechanisms, which are generated by the γ-ray irradiation in GaN-based metal-insulator-semiconductor high electron mobility transistors (MIS-HEMTs), use extremely thin gate insulators. When the γ-ray was radiated, the total ionizing dose (TID) effects were generated and the device performance deteriorated. In this work, we investigated the device property alteration and its mechanisms, which were caused by the proton irradiation in GaN-based MIS-HEMTs for the 5 nm-thick Si3N4 and HfO2 gate insulator. The device property, such as threshold voltage, drain current, and transconductance varied by the proton irradiation. When the 5 nm-thick HfO2 layer was employed for the gate insulator, the threshold voltage shift was larger than that of the 5 nm-thick Si3N4 gate insulator, despite the HfO2 gate insulator exhibiting better radiation resistance compared to the Si3N4 gate insulator. On the other hand, the drain current and transconductance degradation were less for the 5 nm-thick HfO2 gate insulator. Unlike the γ-ray irradiation, our systematic research included pulse-mode stress measurements and carrier mobility extraction and revealed that the TID and displacement damage (DD) effects were simultaneously generated by the proton irradiation in GaN-based MIS-HEMTs. The degree of the device property alteration was determined by the competition or superposition of the TID and DD effects for the threshold voltage shift and drain current and transconductance deterioration, respectively. The device property alteration was diminished due to the reduction of the linear energy transfer with increasing irradiated proton energy. Tuberculosis (TB) is still the leading global cause of death from an infectious bacterial agent. Limiting tuberculosis epidemic spread is therefore an urgent global public health priority. As stated by the WHO, to stop the spread of the disease we need a new vaccine, with better coverage than the current Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccine. This vaccine was first used in 1921 and, since then, there are still no new licensed tuberculosis vaccines. However, there is extremely active research in the field, with a steep acceleration in the past decades, due to the advance of technologies and more rational vaccine design strategies. This review aims to gather latest updates in vaccine development in the various clinical phases and to underline the contribution of Structural Vaccinology (SV) to the development of safer and effective antigens. In particular, SV and the development of vaccine adjuvants is making the use of subunit vaccines, which are the safest albeit the less antigenic ones, an achievable goal. Indeed, subunit vaccines overcome safety concerns but need to be rationally re-engineered to enhance their immunostimulating effects. The larger availability of antigen structural information as well as a better understanding of the complex host immune response to TB infection is a strong premise for a further acceleration of TB vaccine development. One in three cancer deaths worldwide are caused by gastric and colorectal cancer malignancies. Although the incidence and fatality rates differ significantly from country to country, the rates of these cancers in East Asian nations such as South Korea and Japan have been increasing each year. Above all, the biggest danger of this disease is how challenging it is to recognize in its early stages. Moreover, most patients with these cancers do not present with any disease symptoms before receiving a definitive diagnosis. Currently, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are being used for the early prediction of several other diseases, and research has been carried out on these applications. Exhaled VOCs from patients possess remarkable potential as novel biomarkers, and their analysis could be transformative in the prevention and early diagnosis of colon and stomach cancers. VOCs have been spotlighted in recent studies due to their ease of use. Diagnosis on the basis of patient VOC analysis takes less time than methods using gas chromatography, and results in the literature demonstrate that it is possible to determine whether a patient has certain diseases by using organic compounds in their breath as indicators. This study describes how VOCs can be used to precisely detect cancers; as more data are accumulated, the accuracy of this method will increase, and it can be applied in more fields. Particulate matters (PMs) from polluted air cause diverse pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases, including lung inflammation. While the fruits (Goji) of Lycium trees are commonly consumed as traditional medicine and functional food ingredients, the majority of their roots are discarded as by-products. To enhance the industrial applicability of Lycium roots, we prepared an ethanol extract (named GR30) of L. chinense Miller roots and evaluated its potential protective effects against particulate matter 10 (PM10)-induced inflammation and immune cell death. The GR30 treatment (0–500 μg/mL) significantly attenuated the PM10-induced cell cycle arrest, DNA fragmentation and mitochondria-dependent apoptosis in RBL-2H3 basophil cells. GR30 also significantly antagonized the PM10-induced expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-13, and TNF-α) and COX2 expression through downregulation of MAPKs (ERK and JNK) signalling pathway. Oral administration of GR30 (200–400 mg/kg) to PM10 (20 mg/mL)-challenged mice significantly reduced the serum levels of IgE and the expression of TNF-α and Bax in lung tissues, which were elevated by PM10 exposure. These results revealed that the ethanolic extract (GR30) of L. chinense Miller roots exhibited anti-inflammatory and cyto-protective activity against PM10-induced inflammation and basophil cell death, and thus, it would be useful in functional food industries to ameliorate PM-mediated damage to respiratory and immune systems. The WHO's definition of health transcends the mere absence of disease, emphasizing physical, mental, and social well-being. As this perspective is being increasingly applied to the management of chronic diseases, research on gut microbiota (GM) is surging, with a focus on its potential for persistent and noninvasive dietary therapeutics. In patients with epilepsy (PWE), a chronic lack of seizure control along with often neglected psychiatric comorbidities greatly disrupt the quality of life. Evidence shows that GM-derived short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) may impact seizure susceptibility through modulating (1) excitatory/inhibitory neurotransmitters, (2) oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, and (3) psychosocial stress. These functions are also connected to shared pathologies of epilepsy and its two most common psychiatric consequences: depression and anxiety. As the enhancement of SCFA production is enabled through direct administration, as well as probiotics and prebiotics, related dietary treatments may exert antiseizure effects. This paper explores the potential roles of SCFAs in the context of seizure control and its mental comorbidities, while analyzing existing studies on the effects of pro/prebiotics on epilepsy. Landslides that occur near residential regions are most commonly a result of shallow slope failure, which takes place as a consequence of heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, causing loss to human life and property. In this study, the characteristics of the volumetric water content (VWC) gradient were analyzed to predict shallow slope failure which was reproduced based on flume experiments performed at various slope conditions. The VWC gradient values were calculated for each measurement position and slope depth. Moreover, the VWC gradient characteristics during the occurrence and nonoccurrence of shallow slope failures were compared to those of an actual site that did not undergo slope failure. Our results show that the probability of failure increases with an increase in the VWC gradient value. Additionally, early warning criteria are proposed by dividing the range of the VWC gradient value into four stages in which the failure rate rapidly increased. Full-scale flume experiments were performed to simulate an actual site in terms of its scale, and the appropriate sensor installation positions were proposed to effectively predict the probability of failure. In 1986, Laos opened its doors to the global market. With new economic policy mechanisms in place, the country has developed dramatically over the years. The rapid growth brought forth opportunities as well as challenges. This study analyzes traffic congestion in Vientiane, the capital, with a focus on transport mode choices and inequity among commuters. Due to the lack of a reliable database in Laos, the initial step entailed collecting a set of origin–destination data. A total of 498 samples were randomly processed in the data survey, consisting of personal data, household conditions, and travel behaviors. To identify the flow of transport and mode choices, descriptive analysis and a multilevel logit model were employed. The findings reveal the insufficiency of public transit in Vientiane. The preferred modes of transport are motorbikes and private cars. Commuters who use private cars lie in the higher income group, while the low-income group consists of residents who use motorbikes. In addition, the low-income group takes longer to commute as compared to the high-income group. Overall, the lack of public mode choices encourages the use of private cars, leading to critical inequality between low and high-income groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relevance of the optimal design of water distribution networks lies in its applicability. Thus, the design must be as efficient and affordable as possible, meaning that it achieves a minimum level of serviceability using an appropriate amount of resources. In this context, an ideal water network requires the use of minimum-size elements to reach the minimum head pressure required for each node of the system with the lowest energy consumption. For this purpose, a relatively new meta-heuristic algorithm, called Harmony Search, was used in this study to optimize the water distribution network of Cheongna International City, Korea, in terms of the pipe diameter. Furthermore, using the same algorithm under a different approach, an assessment of the deterioration of conduits over time was conducted by analyzing the optimal roughness coefficient for the original pipe material, which provides a useful tool for decision making. Other heuristic and meta-heuristic algorithms have been applied to this type of problem; however, Harmony Search provides a convenient implementation at a reasonable computational cost. For an engineering feasibility study, we studied a simple design to improve NCSS (nanocarbon composite strain sensor) sensitivity by using its geometric pattern at a macro scale. We fabricated bulk- and grid-type sensors with different filler content weights (wt.%) and different sensor lengths and investigated their sensitivity characteristics. We also proposed a unit gauge factor model of NCSS to find a correlation between sensor length and its sensitivity. NCSS sensitivity was improved proportional to its length incremental ratio and we were able to achieve better linear and consistent data from the grid type than the bulk type one. We conclude that the longer sensor length results in a larger change of resistance due to its piezoresistive unit summation and that sensor geometric pattern design is one of the important issues for axial load and deformation measurement. This study optimizes furfural production from pentose released in the liquid hydrolysate of hardwood using an aqueous biphasic system. Dilute acid pretreatment with 4% sulfuric acid was conducted to extract pentose from liquid Quercus mongolica hydrolysate. To produce furfural from xylose, a xylose standard solution with the same acid concentration of the liquid hydrolysate and extracting solvent (tetrahydrofuran) were applied to the aqueous biphasic system. A response surface methodology was adopted to optimize furfural production in the aqueous biphasic system. A maximum furfural yield of 72.39% was achieved at optimal conditions as per the RSM; a reaction temperature of 170 °C, reaction time of 120 min, and a xylose concentration of 10 g/L. Tetrahydrofuran, toluene, and dimethyl sulfoxide were evaluated to understand the effects of the solvent on furfural production. Tetrahydrofuran generated the highest furfural yield, while DMSO gave the lowest yield. A furfural yield of 68.20% from pentose was achieved in the liquid hydrolysate of Quercus mongolica under optimal conditions using tetrahydrofuran as the extracting solvent. The aqueous and tetrahydrofuran fractions were separated from the aqueous biphasic solvent by salting out using sodium chloride, and 94.63% of the furfural produced was drawn out through two extractions using tetrahydrofuran. The synthesis of dimeric products from monoterpene hydrocarbons has been studied for the development of renewable high-density fuel. In this regard, the conversion of α-pinene in turpentine over stannic chloride molten salt hydrates (SnCl4·5H2O) as a catalyst was investigated, and the reaction products were analyzed with gas chromatography/flame ionization detector/mass spectrometer (GC/FID/MS). Overall, the content of α-pinene in a reaction mixture decreased precipitously with an increasing reaction temperature. Almost 100% of the conversion was shown after 1 h of reaction above 90 °C. From α-pinene, dimeric products (hydrocarbons and alcohols/ethers) were mostly formed and their yield showed a steady increase of up to 61 wt% based on the reaction mixture along with the reaction temperature. This conversion was thought to be promoted by Brønsted acid activity of the catalyst, which resulted from a Lewis acid-base interaction between the stannic (Sn(IV)) center and the coordinated water ligands. As for the unexpected heteroatom-containing products, oxygen and chlorine atoms were originated from the coordinated water and chloride ligands of the catalyst. This paper describes the manufacturing method and properties of a superalloy as a gas turbine blade material and a thermal barrier coating to protect it. The development process of superalloy and characteristics of each casting method were introduced. In particular, the single crystal superalloys were analyzed for creep and tensile properties with temperature according to chemical composition. In addition, the theories of creep life prediction models were summarized and comparative analysis was performed. Finally, the manufacturing processes of thermal barrier coatings were introduced, and the characteristics and effects of mechanical, thermal, and durability characteristics of each manufacturing process are described. We believe that this comprehensive review will help not only the gas turbine industry/community, but also material scientists, measurement physicists/engineers, and theorists interested in superalloys and high-temperature ceramics. In recent years, several studies focused on the synthesis of lignin-based nanoparticle in aqueous solution and its potential applications of the drug carrier were investigated. In this study, soda lignin (SL) nanoparticles (i.d. 128–560 nm) were synthesized by the nanoprecipitation process at three different concentrations (1, 2, and 4 mg/mL THF) with various molecular sizes of soda lignin (NP-F1, NP-F2, and NP-F3) obtained from sequential solvent extraction. The average molecular weights of SL, F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5 were 3130, 1190, 2550, 3680, 5310, and 14,650, respectively. The average size of the spherical lignin nanoparticle was a minimum of 128 nm for NP-C1 and the size increased up to 560 nm with increasing concentration. Particle surface charge increased with increasing concentration from −26 mV for NP-C1 to −38 mV for NP-C4. Contrary to expected general trends in polymeric nanoparticles, there was no remarkable change or trend with increasing lignin molecular weight since chemical structures of each lignin fraction are also remarkably different. In this study an empty fruit bunch (EFB) was subjected to a two-step pretreatment to defragment cellulose-rich fractions as well as lignin polymers from its cell walls. First pretreatment: acid-catalyzed steam explosion (ACSE) pretreatment of EFB was conducted under the temperature range of 180–220 °C and residence time of 5–20 min. The ACSE-treated EFB was further placed into the reactor containing 50% aq. ethanol and NaOH as a catalyst and heated at a temperature of 160 °C for 120 min for the second pretreatment: alkali-catalyzed organosolv treatment (ACO). The mass balance and properties of treated EFB were affected by the residence time. The lowest yield of a solid fraction was obtained when the residence time was kept at 15 min. Xylose drastically decreased, especially under the ACSE pretreatment. However, the crystallinity of cellulose increased by increasing the severity factor of the pretreatment and was 47.8% and 57% udner the most severe conditions. The organosolv lignin fractions also showed the presence of 14 major peaks via their pyrolysis-GC analysis. Microbially induced calcite precipitation can cement sand and is an environment-friendly alternative to ordinary Portland cement. In this study, clean Ottawa sand was microbially treated to induce calcite contents (CCs) of 0%, 2%, and 4%. Polyvinyl alcohol fiber was also mixed with the sand at four different contents (0%, 0.2%, 0.4%, and 0.6%) with a constant CC of 4%. A series of undrained triaxial tests was conducted on the treated sands to evaluate the effects of the calcite treatment and fiber inclusion. Their hydraulic conductivity was also determined using a constant head test. As the CC increased from 0% to 4%, the friction angle and cohesion increased from 35.3° to 39.6° and from 0 to 93 kPa, respectively. For specimens with a CC of 4%, as the fiber content increased from 0% to 0.6%, the friction angle and cohesion increased from 39.6° to 42.8° and from 93 to 139 kPa, respectively. The hydraulic conductivity of clean Ottawa sand decreased by a factor of more than 100 as the CC increased from 0% to 4%. Aggressive and recurrent gynecological cancers are associated with worse prognosis and a lack of effective therapeutic response. Ovarian cancer (OC) patients are often diagnosed in advanced stages, when drug resistance, angiogenesis, relapse, and metastasis impact survival outcomes. Currently, surgical debulking, radiotherapy, and/or chemotherapy remain the mainstream treatment modalities; however, patients suffer unwanted side effects and drug resistance in the absence of targeted therapies. Hence, it is urgent to decipher the complex disease biology and identify potential biomarkers, which could greatly contribute to making an early diagnosis or predicting the response to specific therapies. This review aims to critically discuss the current therapeutic strategies for OC, novel drug-delivery systems, and potential biomarkers in the context of genetics and molecular research. It emphasizes how the understanding of disease biology is related to the advancement of technology, enabling the exploration of novel biomarkers that may be able to provide more accurate diagnosis and prognosis, which would effectively translate into targeted therapies, ultimately improving patients' overall survival and quality of life. The downregulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) facilitates precancerous tumor development, even though increasing the level of ROS can promote metastasis. The transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling pathway plays an anti-tumorigenic role in the initial stages of cancer development but a pro-tumorigenic role in later stages that fosters cancer metastasis. TGF-β can regulate the production of ROS unambiguously or downregulate antioxidant systems. ROS can influence TGF-β signaling by enhancing its expression and activation. Thus, TGF-β signaling and ROS might significantly coordinate cellular processes that cancer cells employ to expedite their malignancy. In cancer cells, interplay between oxidative stress and TGF-β is critical for tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Thus, both TGF-β and ROS can develop a robust relationship in cancer cells to augment their malignancy. Simple Summary: Surgical resection is currently the only potentially curative option for patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, 80% of patients are ineligible for surgery due to the presence of invasive disease or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis. Treatment strategies geared towards reclassifying these patients as surgical candidates by reducing metastatic burden represents a promising approach to improving long-term survival. We investiaged the efficacy of a photodynamic therapy (PDT) based treatment regimen at preventing the spread and reducing the burden of metastases in animal models of PDAC. We demonstrate that PDT in combination with the first-line chemotherapeutic nab-paclitaxel dramatically inhibits (up to 100%) the eventual development of metastases in models of early stage PDAC, and completely eliminates metastasis in 55% of animals with already established distant disease in late-stage models. Our findings suggest that PDT-based treatment regimens may enable reclassification of patients with previously inoperable disease as surgical candidates. The precipitation behavior of M23C6 carbide during thermal treatment of high-Cr white iron with various fractions of primarily solidified dendrite was studied and reviewed. M23C6 precipitation in the primarily solidified dendrite occurred preferentially during conventional heat treatment, whereas it occurred scarcely in the eutectic austenite. The reaction between M7C3 and austenite caused the dissolution of M7C3 into austenite, followed by precipitation of M23C6 along the periphery of eutectic M7C3. Relatively low-temperature thermal treatment (modified heat treatment) led to precipitation of M23C6 particles in the eutectic austenite, which is presumed to be caused by solubility difference depending on temperature. Using density functional theory calculations, atomic and electronic structure of defects in monolayer GeS were investigated by focusing on the effects of vacancies and substitutional atoms. We chose group IV or chalcogen elements as substitutional ones, which substitute for Ge or S in GeS. It was found that the bandgap of GeS with substitutional atoms is close to that of pristine GeS, while the bandgap of GeS with Ge or S vacancies was smaller than that of pristine GeS. In terms of formation energy, monolayer GeS with Ge vacancies is more stable than that with S vacancies, and notably GeS with Ge substituted with Sn is most favorable within the range of chemical potential considered. Defects affect the piezoelectric properties depending on vacancies or substitutional atoms. Especially, GeS with substitutional atoms has almost the same piezoelectric stress coefficients e i j as pristine GeS while having lower piezoelectric strain coefficients d i j   but still much higher than other 2D materials. We report the electrical characteristics of GaN-based high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) operated on various substrates/films. For the detailed investigation and comparison of the electrical properties of GaN-based HEMTs according to the substrates/films, GaN-based HEMTs were processed using 4-inch sapphire substrates and separated from their original substrates through the laser lift-off technique. The separated AlGaN/GaN films including processed GaN-based HEMTs were bonded to AlN substrate or plated with a 100 µm-thick Cu at the back-side of the devices since AlN substrate and Cu film exhibit higher thermal conductivity than the sapphire substrate. Compared to the sapphire substrate, DC and RF properties such as drain current, transconductance, cut-off frequency and maximum oscillation frequency were improved, when GaN-based HEMTs were operated on AlN substrate or Cu film. Our systematic study has revealed that the device property improvement results from the diminishment of the self-heating effect, increase in carrier mobility under the gated region, and amelioration of sheet resistance at the access region. C(V) and pulse-mode stress measurements have confirmed that the back-side processing for the device transfer from sapphire substrate onto AlN substrate or Cu film did not induce the critical defects close to the AlGaN/GaN hetero-interface. High Cr white irons with various fractions of primary dendrite have been prepared through the modification of their chemical composition. Increasing C and Cr contents decreased the primary dendrite fraction. Eutectic solidification occurred with the phase fraction ratio of austenite: M7C3 = 2.76:1. The measured primary dendrite fractions were similar to the calculated results. ThermoCalc calculation successfully predicted fractions of M7C3, austenite, and M23C6. Conventional heat treatment at high temperature caused a destabilization of austenite, releasing it's solute elements to form M23C6 carbide. Precipitation of M23C6 during destabilization preferentially occurred within primary (austenite) dendrite, however, the precipitation scarcely occurred within austenite in eutectic phase. The widely administered tuberculosis (TB) vaccine, Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), is the only licensed vaccine, but has highly variable efficiency against childhood and pulmonary TB. Therefore, the BCG prime-boost strategy is a rational solution for the development of new TB vaccines. Studies have shown that Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) culture filtrates contain proteins that have promising vaccine potential. In this study, Rv1876 bacterioferritin was identified from the culture filtrate fraction with strong immunoreactivity. Its immunobiological potential has not been reported previously. We found that recombinant Rv1876 protein induced dendritic cells' (DCs) maturation by MAPK and NF-κB signaling activation, induced a T helper type 1 cell-immune response, and expanded the population of the effector/memory T cell. Boosting BCG with Rv1876 protein enhanced the BCG-primed Th1 immune response and reduced the bacterial load in the lung compared to those of BCG alone. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is an important biological mediator involved in the defense against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection. Currently, there are no reports on the mycobacterial components that regulate PGE2 production. Previously, we have reported that RpfE-treated dendritic cells (DCs) effectively expanded the Th1 and Th17 cell responses simultaneously; however, the mechanism underlying Th1 and Th17 cell differentiation is unclear. Here, we show that PGE2 produced by RpfE-activated DCs via the MAPK and cyclooxygenase 2 signaling pathways induces Th1 and Th17 cell responses mainly via the EP4 receptor. Furthermore, mice administered intranasally with PGE2 displayed RpfE-induced antigen-specific Th1 and Th17 responses with a significant reduction in bacterial load in the lungs. Furthermore, the addition of optimal PGE2 amount to IL-2-IL-6-IL-23p19-IL-1β was essential for promoting differentiation into Th1/Th17 cells with strong bactericidal activity. Alkaline soda lignin (AL) was sequentially fractionated into six fractions of different molecular size by means of solvent extraction and their phenolic hydroxyl groups were chemoselectively methylated to determine their effect on nanoparticle formation of lignin polymers. The effect of the lignin structure on the physical properties of nanoparticles was also clarified in this study. Nanoparticles were obtained from neat alkaline soda lignin (ALNP), solvent-extracted fractions (FALNPs, i.d. 414–1214 nm), and methylated lignins (MALNPs, i.d. 516–721 nm) via the nanoprecipitation method. Specifically, the size properties of MALNPs showed a high negative correlation (R2 = 0.95) with the phenolic hydroxyl group amount. This indicates that the phenolic hydroxyl groups in lignin could be influenced on the nucleation or condensation during the nanoprecipitation process. Lignin nanoparticles exhibited high colloidal stability, and most of them also showed good in vitro cell viability. It is popular that correlated seismic failures spread over the fault tree of a seismic probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) for a nuclear power plant (NPP). To avoid the calculational difficulty of core damage frequency (CDF), the fault tree has been simplified by replacing correlated seismic failures with one typical seismic failure by assuming a full correlation among the correlated seismic failures. Then, the approximate seismic CDF of a seismic single-unit PSA (SUPSA) has been calculated for decades with this simplified SUPSA fault tree. Furthermore, current seismic multi-unit PSAs (MUPSAs) have been performed with imperfect seismic MUPSA models that were generated by combining such imperfect seismic SUPSA fault trees. The authors of this study recently developed a method that can calculate an accurate seismic CDF by converting correlated seismic failures into seismic common cause failures (CCFs). In this study, accurate and imperfect MUPSA models were created and their seismic CDFs were compared. The results of this study show that the seismic CDFs in SUPSA and MUPSA are drastically distorted and safety margins are accordingly distorted when the full correlation assumption is employed. In natural ecosystems, plants are constantly exposed to changes in their surroundings as they grow, caused by a lifestyle that requires them to live where their seeds fall. Thus, plants strive to adapt and respond to changes in their exposed environment that change every moment. Heat stress that naturally occurs when plants grow in the summer or a tropical area adversely affects plants' growth and poses a risk to plant development. When plants are subjected to heat stress, they recognize heat stress and respond using highly complex intracellular signaling systems such as reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS was previously considered a byproduct that impairs plant growth. However, in recent studies, ROS gained attention for its function as a signaling molecule when plants respond to environmental stresses such as heat stress. In particular, ROS, produced in response to heat stress in various plant cell compartments such as mitochondria and chloroplasts, plays a crucial role as a signaling molecule that promotes plant growth and triggers subsequent downstream reactions. Eucalyptus pellita is known as attractive biomass, and it has been utilized for eucalyptus oil, furniture, and pulp and paper production that causes a significant amount of byproducts. Liquid hot water treatment depending on combined severity factor (CSF) was subjected to isolate hemicellulose fraction from E. pellita and to produce xylooligosaccharides (XOS). The xylan extraction ratio based on the initial xylan content of the feedstock was maximized up to 77.6% at 170 °C for 50 min condition (CSF: 1.0), which had accounted for XOS purity of 76.5% based on the total sugar content of the liquid hydrolysate. In this condition, the sum of xylobiose, xylotriose, and xylotetraose which has a low degree of polymerization (DP) of 2 to 4 was determined as 80.6% of the total XOS. The highest XOS production score established using parameters including the xylan extraction ratio, XOS purity, and low DP XOS ratio was 5.7 at CSF 1.0 condition. This study confirmed the general belief of urban planners that mixed land use promotes walking in Seoul, a metropolis in East Asia, by analyzing the effect of mixed land use on the travel mode choice of housewives and unemployed people who make non-commuting trips on weekdays. Using binomial logistic regression of commuting data, it was found that the more mixed a neighborhood environment's uses are, the more the pedestrians prefer to walk rather than drive. The nonlinear relationship between the land use mix index and the choice to walk was also confirmed. Although mixed land use in neighborhoods increased the probability of residents choosing walking over using cars, when the degree of complexity increased above a certain level, the opposite effect was observed. As the density of commercial areas increased, the probability of selecting walking increased. In addition to locational characteristics, income and housing type were also major factors affecting the choice to walk; i.e., when the residents' neighborhood environment was controlled for higher income and living in an apartment rather than multi-family or single-family housing, they were more likely to choose driving over walking. Excessive glutamate damages neuronal cells via the accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), calcium ion (Ca2+) influx, depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, and apoptosis, which may result in the development of chronic neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we evaluated the effects of 4,6′-anhydrooxysporidinone isolated from endophytic fungus Fusarium lateritium SSF2 on glutamate-induced cytotoxicity, accumulation of intracellular ROS, increases in superoxide anion production, Ca2+, depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, and apoptotic cell death in hippocampal HT22 cells. 2′,7′-Dichlorofluorescin diacetate (H2DCFDA) staining was used to determine the intracellular reactive oxygen species concentration and dihydroethidine (DHE) staining was used to determine the superoxide radical. Expression of the nuclear factor-erythroid-2–related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) was analyzed by Western blot. Fluo-4 staining was used to determine the intracellular Ca2+ levels. In order to explore mitochondrial membrane potential, tetramethylrhodamine methyl ester (TMRM) staining was used. Apoptotic cell death was evaluated using Annexin-V/propidium iodide (PI) staining and TUNEL staining. Expression of the cytochrome c release and cleaved caspase-9, -3 was analyzed by Western blot. Here, we were able to isolate 4,6′-anhydrooxysporidinone from endophytic fungus, Fusarium lateritium SSF2, which was shown to protect HT22 cells from glutamate-induced cytotoxicity, accumulation of intracellular ROS, increases in superoxide anion production, Ca2+, and depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential. In addition, 4,6′-anhydrooxysporidinone enhanced the expressions of Nrf2 and HO-1. It also inhibited the apoptotic cell death through the inhibition of cytochrome c release and cleaved caspase-9, -3 in glutamate-treated HT22 cells. In Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, naïve T cells that encounter mycobacterial antigens through dendritic cells (DCs) induce various CD4+ T-cell responses; therefore, appropriate DC activation is the key for protective immunity against tuberculosis. We previously found that Rv2299c-matured DCs induce Th1 differentiation with bactericidal activity. In this study, to prove that Rv2299c could enhance the protective immunity of other vaccine candidates comprising T-cell-stimulating antigens, Ag85B-ESAT6, a well-known vaccine candidate, was selected as a fusion partner of Rv2299c. Recombinant Rv2299c-Ag85B-ESAT6 protein induced DC maturation and activation. Furthermore, fusion of Rv2299c enhanced the protective efficacy of the Ag85B-ESAT6 vaccine in a mouse model and significantly higher production of TNF-α and IL-2 was detected in the lungs, spleen, and lymph nodes of the group immunized with the Rv2299c-fused protein than with Ag85B-ESAT6. In addition, fusion of Rv2299c enhanced the Ag85B-ESAT6-mediated expansion of multifunctional CD4+ T cells. Mycobacterium intracellulare is a leading cause of nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease, with a rapidly increasing prevalence worldwide. This bacterium, commonly distributed in soil and water, is known to be transmitted through the environment rather than between people. Therefore, it is imperative to establish distinguishable genotyping methods to understand the clinical outcome, disease relapses, and epidemiology. Therefore, in this study, representative band-based genotyping methods were performed using M. intracellualre clinical isolates, and their Hunter–Gaston discriminatory index (HGDI) was 0.947, 0.994, and 1 for variable number tandem repetition (VNTR), VNTR-mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units, pulsed field gel electrophoresis, and repetitive sequence based-PCR, respectively. Although VNTR showed relatively low HGDI, co-infection with other M. intracellualre strains could be determined by loci showing allele diversity from 0 to 0.69. Additionally, genetic distance of clinical isolates from Gyeongnam/Korea, and other regions/countries were visualized by minimum spanning tree (MST) using the globally available VNTR profiles. The results of MST revealed that M. intracellulare isolated from patients in Gyeongnam/Korea had specific VNTR genotypes, which may be evidence of the geographic distribution of M. intracellulare specific genotypes. Immunotherapy represents a promising approach for improving current antibiotic treatments through the engagement of the host's immune system. Latency-associated antigens have been included as components of multistage subunit tuberculosis vaccines. We first identified Rv2005c, a DosR regulon-encoded protein, as a seroreactive protein. In this study, we found that Rv2005c induced dendritic cell (DC) maturation and Th1 responses, and its expression by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) within macrophages was enhanced by treatment with CoCl2, a hypoxia-mimetic agent. T cells activated by Rv2005c-matured DCs induced antimycobacterial activity in macrophages under hypoxic conditions but not under normoxic conditions. However, Rv2005c alone did not exhibit any significant vaccine efficacy in our mouse model. The fusion of Rv2005c to the macrophage-activating protein Rv2882c resulted in significant activation of DCs and antimycobacterial activity in macrophages, which were enhanced under hypoxic conditions. Furthermore, the Rv2882c-Rv2005c fusion protein showed significant adjunctive immunotherapeutic effects and led to the generation of long-lasting, antigen-specific, multifunctional CD4+ T cells that coproduced TNF-α, IFN-γ and IL-2 in the lungs of our established mouse model. This paper presents two practical methods for computing the closest approach distance of two ellipsoids in their inter-center direction. The closest approach distance is crucial for collision handling in the dynamic simulation of rigid and deformable bodies approximated with ellipsoids. To find the closest approach distance, we formulate a set of equations for two ellipsoids contacting each other externally in terms of the inter-center distance, contact point, and normal vector. The equations are solved robustly and efficiently using a hybrid of the fixed-point iteration method and bisection method with root bracketing, and a hybrid of Newton's method and the bisection method. In addition to a stopping criterion expressed with the progress of the solution, we introduce a novel criterion expressed in terms of the error in distance. This criterion can be effectively employed in real-time applications such as computer games by allowing an unnoticeable error.
