Home appliances connected to Internet-of-Things (IoT) platforms have been extensively installed in smart homes. In this context, home energy management systems (HEMSs) have emerged as a viable solution for reducing energy costs. Although several studies have analyzed the implementation of HEMSs, a majority of these studies were based on the installation of numerous sensors. Owing to the complexity and costs associated with the installation of multiple sensors, implementation of HEMSs in smart homes is challenging. This paper presents an energy management scheme for an HEMS that minimizes the energy cost in a smart home with data obtained from IoT-based appliances typically used in a smart home. Case studies were conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Pyroptosis represents a type of cell death mechanism notable for its cell membrane disruption and the subsequent release of proinflammatory cytokines. The Nod-like receptor family pyrin domain containing inflammasome 3 (NLRP3) plays a critical role in the pyroptosis mechanism associated with various diseases resulting from particulate matter (PM) exposure. Tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) is a synthetic antioxidant commonly used in a variety of foods and products. The aim of this study is to examine the potential of tBHQ as a therapeutic agent for managing sinonasal diseases induced by PM exposure. The occurrence of NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent pyroptosis in RPMI 2650 cells treated with PM < 4 µm in size was confirmed using Western blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay results for the pyroptosis metabolites IL-1β and IL-18. In addition, the inhibitory effect of tBHQ on PM-induced pyroptosis was confirmed using Western blot and immunofluorescence techniques. The inhibition of tBHQ-mediated pyroptosis was abolished upon nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) knockdown, indicating its involvement in the antioxidant mechanism. tBHQ showed potential as a therapeutic agent for sinonasal diseases induced by PM because NLRP3 inflammasome activation was effectively suppressed via the Nrf2 pathway. We propose a genetic algorithm for optimizing oil skimmer assignments, introducing a tailored repair operation for constrained assignments. Methods essentially involve simulation-based evaluation to ensure adherence to South Korea's regulations. Results show that the optimized assignments, compared to current ones, reduced work time on average and led to a significant reduction in total skimmer capacity. Additionally, we present a deep neural network-based surrogate model, greatly enhancing efficiency compared to simulation-based optimization. Addressing inefficiencies in mobilizing locations that store oil skimmers, further optimization aimed to minimize mobilized locations and was validated through scenario-based simulations resembling actual situations. Based on major oil spills in South Korea, this strategy significantly reduced work time and required locations. Acute rejection (AR) is critical for long-term graft survival in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the integrated risk score of omics-based biomarkers in predicting AR in KTRs. This prospective, randomized, controlled, multicenter, pilot study enrolled 40 patients who recently underwent high-immunologic-risk kidney transplantation (KT). Five omics biomarkers were measured, namely, blood mRNA (three-gene signature), urinary exosomal miRNA (three-gene signature), urinary mRNA (six-gene signature), and two urinary exosomal proteins (hemopexin and tetraspanin-1) at 2 weeks and every 4 weeks after KT for 1 year. An integrated risk score was generated by summing each biomarker up. The biomarker group was informed about the integrated risk scores and used to adjust immunosuppression, but not the control group. The outcomes were graft function and frequency of graft biopsy. Sixteen patients in the biomarker group and nineteen in the control group completed the study. The mean estimated glomerular filtration rate after KT did not differ between the groups. Graft biopsy was performed in two patients (12.5%) and nine (47.4%) in the biomarker and control groups, respectively, with the proportion being significantly lower in the biomarker group (p = 0.027). One patient (6.3%) in the biomarker group and two (10.5%) in the control group were diagnosed with AR, and the AR incidence did not differ between the groups. The tacrolimus trough level was significantly lower in the biomarker group than in the control group at 1 year after KT (p = 0.006). Integrated omics biomarker monitoring may help prevent unnecessary or high-complication-risk biopsy and enables tailored immunosuppression by predicting the risk of AR in KTRs. There is growing evidence linking gut microbiota to overall health, including obesity risk and associated diseases. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SKO-001, a probiotic strain isolated from Angelica gigas, has been reported to reduce obesity by controlling the gut microbiome. In this double-blind, randomised clinical trial, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of SKO-001 in reducing body fat. We included 100 participants randomised into SKO-001 or placebo groups (1:1) for 12 weeks. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to objectively evaluate body fat reduction. Body fat percentage (p = 0.016), body fat mass (p = 0.02), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels (p = 0.025), and adiponectin levels (p = 0.023) were lower in the SKO-001 group than in the placebo group after 12 weeks of SKO-001 consumption. In the SKO-001 group, the subcutaneous fat area (p = 0.003), total cholesterol levels (p = 0.003), and leptin levels (p = 0.014) significantly decreased after 12 weeks of SKO-001 consumption compared with baseline values. Additionally, SKO-001 did not cause any severe adverse reactions. In conclusion, SKO-001 is safe and effective for reducing body fat and has the potential for further clinical testing in humans. Most of the licensed vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 target spike proteins to induce viral neutralizing antibodies. However, currently prevalent SARS-CoV-2 variants contain many mutations, especially in their spike proteins. The development of vaccine antigens with conserved sequences that cross-react with variants of SARS-CoV-2 is needed to effectively defend against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Given that viral infection is initiated in the respiratory mucosa, strengthening the mucosal immune response would provide effective protection. We constructed a mucosal vaccine antigen using the papain-like protease (PLpro) domain of non-structural protein 3 of SARS-CoV-2. To potentiate the mucosal immune response, PLpro was combined with human beta-defensin 2, an antimicrobial peptide with mucosal immune adjuvant activity, and Co1, an M-cell-targeting ligand. Intranasal administration of the recombinant PLpro antigen conjugate into C57BL/6 and hACE2 knock-in (KI) mice induced antigen-specific T-cell and antibody responses with complement-dependent cytotoxic activity. Viral challenge experiments using the Wuhan and Delta strains of SARS-CoV-2 provided further evidence that immunized hACE2 KI mice were protected against viral challenge infections. Our study shows that PLpro is a useful candidate vaccine antigen against SARS-CoV-2 infection and that the inclusion of human beta-defensin 2 and Co1 in the recombinant construct may enhance the efficacy of the vaccine. Background and Objectives: Accidental home injuries among older adults are increasing globally, but reporting is limited. This study aims to establish foundational data for program development and policies to prevent accidental injuries at home in older adults by using data on the occurrence of accidental injuries at home and analyzing the risk factors of mortality due to accidental injuries among adults aged 65 years and older. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study used data from the community-based Severe Trauma Survey in South Korea. This study identified general, injury-related, and treatment-related characteristics of older adults who were transported to the emergency department with accidental injuries at home. Single-variable and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to identify risk factors for mortality after injury. Results: The majority of older adults in this study who experienced accidental injuries at home were aged 75 to 84 (42.8%) and female (52.8%), with 1465 injured from falls and slips (68.0%). Risk factors for mortality included older age (≥85 years) (ORs 2.25, 95% CI 1.47–3.45), male sex (ORs 1.60, 95% CI 1.15–2.20), mechanism of injury (falls or slips vs. contact injury, ORs 6.76, 95% CI 3.39–13.47; airway obstruction vs. contact injury, ORs 13.96, 95% CI 6.35–30.71), higher severity (moderate vs. mild, ORs 2.56, 95% CI 1.45–4.54; severe vs. mild, ORs 12.24, 95% CI 6.48–23.12; very severe vs. mild, ORs 67.95, 95% CI 38.86–118.81), and receiving a blood transfusion (ORs 2.14, 95% CI 1.24–3.67). Conclusions: Based on these findings, the home and community environments where older adults live should be inspected and monitored, and in-home accidental injury prevention strategies should be developed tailored to the characteristics of older adults' risk factors and their injury-related characteristics. Background: This study evaluated the effectiveness of short fully covered self-expanding metal stents (FCSEMS) with an anti-migration design in treating benign biliary strictures (BBS) not related to living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 75 patients who underwent FCSEMS insertion for BBS management. Stents were initially kept for 3 months and exchanged every 3 months until stricture resolution. Adverse events and stricture recurrence after FCSEMS removal were assessed during follow-up. Results: The study outcomes were technical success, stenosis resolution, and treatment failure. Technical success was 100%, with stricture resolution in 99% of patients. The mean onset time of BBS post-surgery was 4.4 years, with an average stent indwelling period of 5.5 months. Stricture recurrence occurred in 20% of patients, mostly approximately 18.8 months after stent removal. Early cholangitis and stent migration were noted in 3% and 4% of patients, respectively. Conclusions: This study concludes that short FCSEMS demonstrate high efficacy in the treatment of non-LDLT-related BBS, with a low incidence of interventions and complications. Although this is a single-center, retrospective study with a limited sample size, the findings provide preliminary evidence supporting the use of short FCSEMS as a primary treatment modality for BBS. Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a rare hematologic disorder that infrequently causes acute kidney injury (AKI). CMML can transform into acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which can be accompanied by a deterioration in kidney function. However, severe AKI due to extramedullary manifestations of AML is rare. Herein, we present the case of a 67-year-old male patient with CMML that transformed into AML with severe AKI necessitating hemodialysis. The cause of the AKI was the AML transformation. The patient, with stable kidney function after chemotherapy for CMML, presented with a sudden decline in kidney function. Hemodialysis was initiated because of severe AKI, and histopathologic evaluation of the kidney biopsy specimen revealed severe, diffuse mixed inflammatory cell infiltrates in the interstitium and c-kit-immunopositive myeloblast-like cells. A bone marrow biopsy was performed because of the kidney biopsy findings suggesting that leukemic infiltration led to the diagnosis of AML. The patient received chemotherapy for AML, and his kidney function recovered. As illustrated in this case, severe AKI can develop as an early extramedullary manifestation during transformation from CMML to AML. Therefore, in patients with CMML and rapidly declining renal function, transformation into AML should be considered and histopathologically confirmed by kidney biopsy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, battery fires have become more common owing to the increased use of lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, monitoring technology is required to detect battery anomalies because battery fires cause significant damage to systems. We used Mahalanobis distance (MD) and independent component analysis (ICA) to detect early battery faults in a real-world energy storage system (ESS). The fault types included historical data of battery overvoltage and humidity anomaly alarms generated by the system management program. These are typical preliminary symptoms of thermal runaway, the leading cause of lithium-ion battery fires. The alarms were generated by the system management program based on thresholds. If a fire occurs in an ESS, the humidity inside the ESS will increase very quickly, which means that threshold-based alarm generation methods can be risky. In addition, industrial datasets contain many outliers for various reasons, including measurement and communication errors in sensors. These outliers can lead to biased training results for models. Therefore, we used MD to remove outliers and performed fault detection based on ICA. The proposed method determines confidence limits based on statistics derived from normal samples with outliers removed, resulting in well-defined thresholds compared to existing fault detection methods. Moreover, it demonstrated the ability to detect faults earlier than the point at which alarms were generated by the system management program: 15 min earlier for battery overvoltage and 26 min earlier for humidity anomalies. This study investigated the effect of temperature on the aspect-ratio etching of SiO2 in CF4/H2/Ar plasma using patterned samples of a 200 nm trench in a low-temperature reactive-ion etching system. Lower temperatures resulted in higher etch rates and aspect ratios for SiO2. However, the plasma property was constant with the chuck temperature, indicated by the line intensity ratio from optical emission spectroscopy monitoring of the plasma. The variables obtained from the characterization of the etched profile for the 200 nm trench after etching were analyzed as a function of temperature. A reduction in the necking ratio affected the etch rate and aspect ratio of SiO2. The etching mechanism of the aspect ratio etching of SiO2 was discussed based on the results of the surface composition at necking via energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy with temperature. The results suggested that the neutral species reaching the etch front of SiO2 had a low sticking coefficient. The bowing ratio decreased with lowering temperature, indicating the presence of directional ions during etching. Therefore, a lower temperature for the aspect ratio etching of SiO2 could achieve a faster etch rate and a higher aspect ratio of SiO2 via the reduction of necking than higher temperatures. Abnormal lipid metabolism increases the relative risk of kidney disease in patients with a single kidney. Using transcriptome analysis, we investigated whether a high-fat diet leads to abnormalities in lipid metabolism and induces kidney cell-specific damage in unilateral nephrectomy mice. Mice with unilateral nephrectomy fed a high-fat diet for 12 weeks exhibited progressive renal dysfunction in proximal tubules, including lipid accumulation, vacuolization, and cell damage. Ring finger protein 20 (RNF20) is a ligase of nuclear receptor corepressor of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). The transcriptome analysis revealed the involvement of RNF20-related transcriptome changes in PPAR signaling, lipid metabolism, and water transmembrane transporter under a high-fat diet and unilateral nephrectomy. In vitro treatment of proximal tubular cells with palmitic acid induced lipotoxicity by altering RNF20, PPARα, and ATP-binding cassette subfamily A member 1 (ABCA1) expression. PPARγ and aquaporin 2 (AQP2) expression decreased in collecting duct cells, regulating genetic changes in the water reabsorption process. In conclusion, a high-fat diet induces lipid accumulation under unilateral nephrectomy via altering RNF20-mediated regulation and causing functional damage to cells as a result of abnormal lipid metabolism, thereby leading to structural and functional kidney deterioration. Background and Objectives: Stable fixation is essential for successful healing after medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) to minimize the risk of non-union and correction loss. In Asians, potential complications such as D-hole screw osteotomy plane violation (D-hole violation) and inadequate plate fitting arise due to improper plate size. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors for D-hole violation and compare the conventional anatomic (CA) plate with an individualized anatomic (IA) plate in MOWHTO procedures. Materials and Methods: A simulation study on D-hole violation using the CA plate was conducted, involving preoperative radiographs and CT scans of 64 lower extremities from 47 MOWHTO patients. Additionally, a randomized controlled study compared CA and IA plates in MOWHTO procedures with 34 patients (17 in the CA plate group; 18 in the IA plate group). Patient demographics, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and radiological measures were analyzed. Results: In the simulation study, the rates of D-hole violation ranged from 20.3% to 59.4%, with an increase observed as the plate was distalized from 5 mm to 10 mm away from the joint line. Short stature was identified as an independent risk factor for D-hole violation (p < 0.001), with a cutoff value of 155.3 cm. In the randomized controlled study, no significant difference in PROMs and D-hole violation was observed between the CA plate and IA plate groups. However, the IA plate group showed better plate fitting compared to the CA plate group (p = 0.041). Conclusions: This study identified a high risk of D-hole screw osteotomy plane violations in MOWHTO procedures, particularly when the plate is positioned more distally and in individuals with a stature below 155.3 cm. It also revealed that individualized plates provide better tibial fitting compared to conventional anatomic plates, particularly in Asian populations where tibial morphology tends to be shorter than in Western populations. Simple Summary: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, but effective prognostic markers are lacking. Methionyl-tRNA synthetase 1 (MARS1), a critical enzyme in translation initiation that transfers Met to the initiator tRNA, has been implicated in cancer development and progression. MARS1 expression was significantly increased in PDAC versus normal pancreatic duct tissues. Additionally, high expression of MARS1 was associated with a poor prognosis in patients with PDAC. Our findings suggest that MARS1 is involved in pancreatic carcinogenesis and has potential as a novel prognostic marker for PDAC. The serum level of CA 19-9 is a prognostic marker for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). We evaluated the ability of the expression level of methionyl-tRNA synthetase 1 (MARS1)—which facilitates cancer growth by modulating protein synthesis and the cell cycle—to predict the prognosis of PDAC. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed on pancreatic specimens obtained from patients with PDAC who were undergoing surgery. High MARS1 expression was defined as equal to, or greater than, that in normal acinar cells. Low MARS1 expression was defined as weaker than in normal acinar cells, and stronger than in the pancreatic duct epithelium. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on other factors related to prognosis. Among 137 PDAC patients, no significant differences in baseline characteristics were found between those with high (n = 82) and low (n = 55) MARS1 expression. The median overall survival time of patients with high MARS1 expression was shorter than that of those with low expression (15.2 versus 17.2 months, log-rank test p = 0.044). The median disease-free survival (DFS) was not significantly different between the two groups. However, the DFS was shorter in patients with high than in those with low MARS1 expression (8.9 versus 11.2 months, log-rank test p = 0.067). In a multivariate analysis, lymph node metastasis and high MARS1 expression were associated with a poor prognosis of PDAC. Background: The vestibulocerebellar tract (VCT) is responsible for maintaining balance, spatial orientation, and coordination. Damage to the vestibular system is accompanied by symptoms of balance disorder or ataxia. This study aimed to compare cerebellar dysfunction according to VCT damage in patients with cerebellar stroke. Methods: Six patients with cerebellum injury were recruited. This study measured ataxia and hand function related to visuomotor integration and manual dexterity using the Purdue pegboard test. The primary and bilateral secondary VCTs were reconstructed to investigate the integrity of pathways using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Results: The ataxia sign was positive in five patients (83%) at onset. In the result of the pegboard test, all patients had hand dysfunction in the dominant hand (100%). Likewise, all patients also had non-dominant hand dysfunction (100%). On the DTI tractography, the left and right primary VCTs of the patients demonstrated a 25% injury rate. Furthermore, the injury rates of ipsilateral and contralateral secondary VCTs were 50% and 58%. Conclusions: Ataxia is related to secondary VCTs, and hand dysfunction is also related to VCTs. Therefore, we believe that the current study will be helpful in evaluating and providing a clinical intervention strategy for patients with ataxia and hand dysfunction following cerebellar injury. Student dropout is a serious issue in that it not only affects the individual students who drop out but also has negative impacts on the former university, family, and society together. To resolve this, various attempts have been made to predict student dropout using machine learning. This paper presents a model to predict student dropout at Sahmyook University using machine learning. Academic records collected from 20,050 students of the university were analyzed and used for learning. Various machine learning algorithms were used to implement the model, including Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, Deep Neural Network, and LightGBM (Light Gradient Boosting Machine), and their performances were compared through experiments. We also discuss the influence of oversampling used to resolve data imbalance issues in the dropout data. For this purpose, various oversampling algorithms such as SMOTE, ADASYN, and Borderline-SMOTE were tested. Our experimental results showed that the proposed model implemented using LightGBM provided the best performance with an F1-score of 0.840, which is higher than the results of previous studies discussing the dropout prediction with the issue of class imbalance. This study investigated defect formation and strain distribution in high-Mg-content Al-Mg alloys during normal rolling and cross-rolling processes. The finite element analysis (FEA) revealed the presence of wave defects and strain localization-induced zipper cracks in normal cold rolling, which were confirmed by the experimental results. The concentration of shear strain played a significant role in crack formation and propagation. However, the influence of wave defects was minimal in the cross-rolling process, which exhibited a relatively uniform strain distribution. Nonetheless, strain concentration at the edge and center regions led to the formation of zipper cracks and edge cracks, with more pronounced propagation observed in the experiments compared to FEA predictions. Furthermore, texture evolution was found to be a crucial factor affecting crack propagation, particularly with the development of the Goss texture component, which was observed via electron backscattered diffraction analysis at bending points. The Goss texture hindered crack propagation, while the Brass texture allowed cracks to pass through. This phenomenon was consistent with both FEA and experimental observations. To mitigate edge crack formation and propagation, potential strategies involve promoting the formation of the Goss texture at the edge through alloy and process conditions, as well as implementing intermediate annealing to alleviate stress accumulation. These measures can enhance the overall quality and reliability of Al-Mg alloys during cross-rolling processes. In summary, understanding the mechanisms of defect formation and strain distribution in Al-Mg alloys during rolling processes is crucial for optimizing their mechanical properties. The findings of this study provide insights into the challenges associated with wave defects, strain localization, and crack propagation. Future research and optimization efforts should focus on implementing strategies to minimize defects and improve the overall quality of Al-Mg alloys in industrial applications. Low life satisfaction among multicultural children is an important issue related to children's mental health in Korea. The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing the life satisfaction of children whose Vietnamese mothers migrated to Korea for marriage. Data from the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS) conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI) in 2020 were used. The participants were 586 elementary school students. The mean age was 11.01 years (SD 0.19), and 52.0% were girls. Based on Engel's biopsychosocial (BPS) model, biological factors (gender, physical health, and body mass index), psychological factors (mental health, acculturative stress, self-esteem, and general stress), and sociocultural factors (family economic status, social support, and parenting style) were measured and analyzed by using hierarchical multiple regression. In the final model, self-esteem (β = 0.399, p < 0.001), parental social support (β = 0.184, p < 0.001), and neglectful parenting style (β = 0.085, p = 0.031) were positively related to children's life satisfaction, whereas general stress (β = −0.213, p < 0.001) and acculturative stress (β = −0.104, p = 0.002) were negatively related. The overall explanatory power was 41.7%. In conclusion, it is necessary to develop a specialized program that focuses on strengthening the bonds between parents and their children to enhance family functioning for multicultural families. This correlational study aimed to identify factors that contribute to changes in perceptions of digital technology among older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study utilized raw data from "The 2021 Report on the Digital Divide," a nationwide survey conducted in South Korea. Data were collected from 1171 older adults (aged ≥ 65 years) from September to December 2021. Multiple regression analyses were performed to examine the factors influencing changes in the perception of digital technology. Over one-third of the participants reported positive changes in their perceptions of digital technology during the pandemic. Key factors included self-efficacy for digital devices (β = 0.35, p < 0.001), digital networking (β = 0.11, p < 0.001), accessibility to digital devices (β = 0.10, p = 0.002), and perceived health (β = 0.08, p = 0.003). The expansion of digital technology owing to the pandemic has served as a catalyst for changes in older adults' perceptions. Healthcare providers and caregivers should consider digital technology perceptions and influencing factors when providing digital healthcare services. The results can be utilized to identify vulnerable older adults with negative perceptions of digital technology, thus minimizing disparities in access to digital healthcare services. Emodin, an emerging mycotoxin, is known to be hepatotoxic, but its mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that emodin could induce endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress through the inositol-requiring enzyme 1 alpha (IRE1α)–X-box-binding protein 1 (XBP1) pathway and apoptosis, which are closely correlated and contribute to hepatotoxicity. To test this hypothesis, a novel IRE1α inhibitor, STF-083010, was used. An MTT assay was used to evaluate metabolic activity, and quantitative PCR and western blotting were used to investigate the gene and protein expression of ER stress or apoptosis-related markers. Apoptosis was evaluated with flow cytometry. Results showed that emodin induced cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner in HepG2 cells and upregulated the expression of binding immunoglobulin protein (BiP), C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), IRE1α, spliced XBP1, the B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)-associated X protein (Bax)/Bcl-2 ratio, and cleaved caspase-3. Cotreatment with emodin and STF-083010 led to the downregulation of BiP and upregulation of CHOP, the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, and cleaved caspase-3 compared with single treatment with emodin. Furthermore, the apoptosis rate was increased in a dose-dependent manner with emodin treatment. Simple Summary: In computer-assisted diagnostics for pancreatic cancer, attributes featuring irregular contours and indistinct boundaries on CT images present challenges in acquiring high-quality annotations. In response to this issue, we have devised an innovative self-supervised learning algorithm, engineered to enhance the differentiation of malignant and benign lesions. This innovation obviates the necessity for radiologist intervention, thus facilitating the precise classification of pancreatic cancer. By employing a pseudo-lesion segmentation self-supervised learning model, which capitalizes on automatically generated high-quality training data, we have managed to significantly elevate the performance of both convolutional neural network-based and transformer-based deep learning models. The aim of this study was to develop a novel deep learning (DL) model without requiring large-annotated training datasets for detecting pancreatic cancer (PC) using computed tomography (CT) images. This retrospective diagnostic study was conducted using CT images collected from 2004 and 2019 from 4287 patients diagnosed with PC. We proposed a self-supervised learning algorithm (pseudo-lesion segmentation (PS)) for PC classification, which was trained with and without PS and validated on randomly divided training and validation sets. We further performed cross-racial external validation using open-access CT images from 361 patients. For internal validation, the accuracy and sensitivity for PC classification were 94.3% (92.8–95.4%) and 92.5% (90.0–94.4%), and 95.7% (94.5–96.7%) and 99.3 (98.4–99.7%) for the convolutional neural network (CNN) and transformer-based DL models (both with PS), respectively. Implementing PS on a small-sized training dataset (randomly sampled 10%) increased accuracy by 20.5% and sensitivity by 37.0%. For external validation, the accuracy and sensitivity were 82.5% (78.3–86.1%) and 81.7% (77.3–85.4%) and 87.8% (84.0–90.8%) and 86.5% (82.3–89.8%) for the CNN and transformer-based DL models (both with PS), respectively. PS self-supervised learning can increase DL-based PC classification performance, reliability, and robustness of the model for unseen, and even small, datasets. C3 glomerulonephritis (C3GN) is a rare cause of end-stage kidney disease and frequently recurrent in allografts following kidney transplantation (KT). Herein, we describe the case of a kidney transplant recipient who developed recurrent C3GN along with BK-virus-associated nephropathy (BKVAN) following KT. A 33-year-old man diagnosed with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis 17 years ago underwent preemptive KT with a donor kidney from his aunt. Proteinuria gradually increased after 3 months following KT, and graft biopsy was performed 30 months after KT. Histopathological examination revealed recurrent C3GN. The dosages of triple immunosuppressive maintenance therapy agents were increased. Subsequently, serum C3 levels recovered to normal levels. However, at 33 months following KT, the BK viral load increased and graft function gradually deteriorated; a second graft biopsy was performed at 46 months following KT, which revealed BKVAN and decreased C3GN activity. The dosages of immunosuppressive agents were decreased; subsequently, BKVAN improved and graft function was maintained with normal serum C3 levels at 49 months following KT. The purpose of this study was to verify the validity and reliability of the LCSHBS-K. This was a methodological study. The participants were adults aged between 50 and 74 years old, according to the selection criteria for lung cancer screening presented by the Comprehensive Cancer Network clinical practice guidelines in oncology recommendations. This study included 204 high-risk individuals who had not been diagnosed with lung cancer. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics software 26.0 version (IBM, New York, NY, USA). The reliability was analyzed by Cronbach's α for internal consistency, and the concurrent validity was analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficients to identify the correlations with the health belief scale for Korean adults. To test the convergent validity, the average variance extracted (AVE) and composite reliability (CR) were calculated using confirmatory factor analysis. In addition, the model fit for a tool was CMIN (χ2/df), SRMR, RMSEA, GFI, and CFI as a comparative fit index. The discriminant validity was tested based on AVE > r2. The average age of the participants was 55.49 (SD = 5.07), the average smoking history was 29.55 (SD = 8.12) years, and the average number of cigarettes smoked per day was 12.18 (SD = 7.77). The goodness of fit met the criteria with GFI = 0.81 (criteria > 0.9), CMIN = 1.69 (criteria < 2), SRMR = 0.06 (criteria < 0.08), RMSEA = 0.058 (criteria < 0.06), and CFI = 0.91 (criteria > 0.9). The LCSHBS-K showed a statistically significant positive correlation with the HBS (r = 0.32 (p < 0.001)). Cronbach's α was 0.80 for all the items in the LCSHBS-K. Therefore, the validity and reliability of the LCSHBS-K tool were confirmed. Bisphenol F (BPF; 4,4′-dihydroxydiphenylmethane) is one of the most frequently used compounds in the manufacture of plastics and epoxy resins. Previous studies have demonstrated that BPF affects locomotor behavior, oxidative stress, and neurodevelopment in zebrafish. However, its neurotoxic effects are controversial, and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. In order to determine whether BPF affects the motor system, we exposed zebrafish embryos to BPF and assessed behavioral, histological, and neurochemical changes. Spontaneous locomotor behavior and startle response were significantly decreased in BPF-treated zebrafish larvae compared with control larvae. BPF induced motor degeneration and myelination defects in zebrafish larvae. In addition, embryonic exposure to BPF resulted in altered metabolic profiles of neurochemicals, including neurotransmitters and neurosteroids, which may impact locomotion and motor function. Medullary thyroid cancer originates from parafollicular C-cells in the thyroid. Despite successful thyroidectomy, localizing remnant cancer cells in patients with elevated calcitonin and carcinoembryonic antigen levels remains a challenge. Extranasal odorant receptors are expressed in cells from non-olfactory tissues, including C-cells. This study evaluates the odorant receptor signals from parafollicular C-cells, specifically, the presence of olfactory marker protein, and further assesses the ability of the protein in localizing and treating medullary thyroid cancer. We used immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescent staining, Western blot, RNA sequencing, and real time-PCR to analyze the expression of odorant receptors in mice thyroids, thyroid cancer cell lines, and patient specimens. We used in vivo assays to analyze acetate binding, calcitonin secretion, and cAMP pathway. We also used positron emission tomography (PET) to assess C11-acetate uptake in medullary thyroid cancer patients. We investigated olfactory marker protein expression in C-cells in patients and found that it co-localizes with calcitonin in C-cells from both normal and cancer cell lines. Specifically, we found that OR51E2 and OR51E1 were expressed in thyroid cancer cell lines and human medullary thyroid cancer cells. Furthermore, we found that in the C-cells, the binding of acetate to OR51E2 activates its migration into the nucleus, subsequently resulting in calcitonin secretion via the cAMP pathway. Finally, we found that C11-acetate, a positron emission tomography radiotracer analog for acetate, binds competitively to OR51E2. We confirmed C11-acetate uptake in cancer cells and in human patients using PET. We demonstrated that acetate binds to OR51E2 in C-cells. Using C11-acetate PET, we identified recurrence sites in post-operative medullary thyroid cancer patients. Background and Aims: Various guidewires are used for biliary cannulation, and each one has its own characteristics affecting its effectiveness. This study aimed to measure the basic properties and evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed 0.025-inch guidewire for selective biliary cannulation. Methods: A total of 190 patients at five referral hospitals were randomly allocated to undergo selective biliary cannulation using the newly developed guidewire (NGW group, n = 95) or a conventional guidewire (CGW group, n = 95). The primary outcome was the selective biliary cannulation rate in naïve papillae. The secondary outcome was to measure the NGW basic properties, compare them with those of the CGW, and analyze the importance of basic property differences. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups in the baseline characteristics. The primary outcome (75.8% vs. 84.2%, p = 0.102) and adverse event rate (6.3% vs. 4.2%, p = 0.374) were similar in both groups. However, compared with the CGW group, the NGW group showed a higher number of ampulla contacts (2.58 vs. 2.02, p = 0.011) and longer cannulation time (216.5 vs. 135.1 s, p = 0.016). Furthermore, the NGW group had higher maximum friction (34.6 ± 1.34 vs. 30.2 ± 4.09), lower stiffness, and better elastic resiliency. In the multivariate analysis, a curved-tip GW (OR = 0.26, 95% CI 0.11–0.62, p = 0.002) and normal papillary shape (OR = 0.39, 95% CI 0.17–0.86, p = 0.021) were contributing factors for successful selective biliary cannulation. Conclusions: The NGW group had high friction and low stiffness, characteristics affecting biliary cannulation. Nurses are at risk of eye discomfort due to the increasing use of visual display terminals and wearing masks, which may worsen eye-related symptoms. This study was conducted in South Korea to identify the factors influencing eye-related symptoms among hospital nurses on/off duty. The study included 154 nurses who completed a self-reported questionnaire that assessed demographic characteristics, perceived health status, dry-eye symptoms, occupational stress, and eye-related symptoms. The results showed that nurses complained of more eye-related symptoms on duty than off duty, with female sex and dry-eye symptoms being the factors influencing eye-related symptoms on duty. On the other hand, computer use time (≥4 h) and dry-eye symptoms were the factors influencing eye-related symptoms off duty. The study suggests that assessing dry-eye symptoms can facilitate early interventions to relieve eye-related symptoms in hospital nurses, and they should pay attention to eye health during working hours as well as off hours. Bioleaching has been regarded as a green alternative to chemical leaching in metal extraction processes. In this study, the bioleaching properties of indigenous acidophilic bacteria for various sulfide minerals were compared and evaluated in terms of pH reduction and metal leaching. The primary minerals in the samples were sphalerite (ZnS) (SP), galena (PbS) (GN1 and GN2), pyrite (FeS2) (PY), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) (CCP), and an indigenous acidophilic bacterium, Acidiphilium cryptum (99.56%), was applied for bioleaching experiments. The metal extraction in bioleaching differed according to the mineral content. The leached metal concentration of Zn was higher than that of Pb for the SP sample with a high ZnS content, whereas the concentration of Pb was higher than that of Zn for the GN1 and GN2 samples with a high PbS content. Meanwhile, the leaching rate of Zn was faster than that of Pb for all samples. Corrosion action was observed on the surface of bacterial residues in SP and GN1 samples. These results show that the bioleaching mechanism based on sulfide minerals proceeds through indirect biological oxidation, chemical oxidation, and direct bacterial oxidation. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is major economic problem given its effects on swine health and productivity. Therefore, we evaluated the genetic stability of a codon pair de-optimized (CPD) PRRSV, E38-ORF7 CPD, as well as the master seed passage threshold that elicited an effective immune response in pigs against heterologous virus challenge. The genetic stability and immune response of every 10th passage (out of 40) of E38-ORF7 CPD was analyzed through whole genome sequencing and inoculation in 3-week-old pigs. E38-ORF7 CPD passages were limited to 20 based on the full-length mutation analysis and animal test results. After 20 passages, the virus could not induce antibodies to provide effective immunity and mutations accumulated in the gene, which differed from the CPD gene, presenting a reason for low infectivity. Conclusively, the optimal passage number of E38-ORF7 CPD is 20. As a vaccine, this may help overcome the highly diverse PRRSV infection with substantially enhanced genetic stability. Monoclonal antibodies directed against immune checkpoint proteins have been widely used to treat various cancers and have resulted in favorable clinical outcomes. Despite these beneficial properties, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) can induce side effects called immune-related adverse events, including sarcoidosis-like reactions (SLR) across multiple organs. Here, we report a case of renal SLR after ICI treatment, and we review the related literature. A 66-year-old Korean patient with non-small cell lung cancer was referred to the nephrology clinic for renal failure after the 14th pembrolizumab treatment dose. A renal biopsy revealed multiple epithelioid cell granulomas, with several lymphoid aggregates in the renal interstitium and a moderate degree of inflammatory cell infiltration in the tubulointerstitium. A moderate dose of steroid therapy was initiated, and the serum creatinine level partially recovered after four weeks of treatment. Valproic acid (VPA) is a known drug for treating epilepsy and mood disorders; however, it is not recommended for pregnant women because of its possible teratogenicity. VPA affects neurotransmission and gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms by acting as a histone deacetylase inhibitor and has been used to establish animal models of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, studies on the long-term effects of early exposure to VPA on glucocorticoid and neurosteroid synthesis in the brain are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the long-term changes in metabolic alterations and gene expression regulation according to sex, using metabolic steroid profiling data from cerebral cortex samples of rats four weeks after VPA exposure (400 mg/kg). In neonatal VPA-exposed models, estradiol levels decreased, and cytochrome P450 19A1 gene (Cyp19a1) expression was reduced in the prepubertal male cortex. Progesterone and allopregnanolone levels decreased, and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 gene (Hsd3b1) expression was also downregulated in the prepubertal female cortex. Furthermore, cortisol levels increased, and mRNA expression of the nuclear receptor subfamily 3 group C member 1 gene (Nr3c1) was downregulated in the cortices of both sexes. Unlike the neonatal VPA-exposed models, although a decrease in progestin and estradiol levels was observed in females and males, respectively, no differences were observed in cortisol levels in the cortex tissues of 8-week-old adult rats administered VPA for four weeks. Commercially used porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome (PRRS) modified live virus (MLV) vaccines provide limited protection with heterologous viruses, can revert back to a virulent form and they tend to recombine with circulating wild-type strains. Codon pair deoptimization (CPD) is an advanced method to attenuate a virus that overcomes the disadvantages of MLV vaccines and is effective in various virus vaccine models. The CPD vaccine against PRRSV-2 was successfully tested in our previous study. The co-existence of PRRSV-1 and -2 in the same herd demands protective immunity against both viruses. In this study, live attenuated PRRSV-1 was constructed by recoding 22 base pairs in the ORF7 gene of the E38 strain. The efficacy and safety of the CPD live attenuated vaccine E38-ORF7 CPD to protect against virulent PRRSV-1 were evaluated. Viral load, and respiratory and lung lesion scores were significantly reduced in animals vaccinated with E38-ORF7 CPD. Vaccinated animals were seropositive by 14 days post-vaccination with an increased level of interferon-γ secreting cells. The importance of monitoring the electron density uniformity of plasma has attracted significant attention in material processing, with the goal of improving production yield. This paper presents a non-invasive microwave probe for in-situ monitoring electron density uniformity, called the Tele-measurement of plasma Uniformity via Surface wave Information (TUSI) probe. The TUSI probe consists of eight non-invasive antennae and each antenna estimates electron density above the antenna by measuring the surface wave resonance frequency in a reflection microwave frequency spectrum (S 11 ). The estimated densities provide electron density uniformity. For demonstration, we compared it with the precise microwave probe and results revealed that the TUSI probe can monitor plasma uniformity. Furthermore, we demonstrated the operation of the TUSI probe beneath a quartz or wafer. In conclusion, the demonstration results indicated that the TUSI probe can be used as an instrument for a non-invasive in-situ method for measuring electron density uniformity. (1) Background: There have been many attempts to predict the weight-bearing line (WBL) ratio using simple knee radiographs. Using a convolutional neural network (CNN), we focused on predicting the WBL ratio quantitatively. (2) Methods: From March 2003 to December 2021, 2410 patients with 4790 knee AP radiographs were randomly selected using stratified random sampling. Our dataset was cropped by four points annotated by a specialist with a 10-pixel margin. The model predicted our interest points, which were both plateau points, i.e., starting WBL point and exit WBL point. The resulting value of the model was analyzed in two ways: pixel units and WBL error values. (3) Results: The mean accuracy (MA) was increased from around 0.5 using a 2-pixel unit to around 0.8 using 6 pixels in both the validation and the test sets. When the tibial plateau length was taken as 100%, the MA was increased from approximately 0.1, using 1%, to approximately 0.5, using 5% in both the validation and the test sets. (4) Conclusions: The DL-based key-point detection algorithm for predicting lower limb alignment through labeling using simple knee AP radiographs demonstrated comparable accuracy to that of the direct measurement using whole leg radiographs. Bio-SRF based on livestock waste has low heating value and high moisture content. The concentration of toxic gases such as SOx, NOx, and HCl in the flue gas is changed according to the composition of fuel, and it has been reported. Therefore, the study of fuel combustion characteristics is necessary. In this study, we investigated combustion characteristics on the blended firing of coal and Bio-SRF (bio-solid refused fuel) made from livestock waste fuel in CFBC (circulating fluidized bed combustor). The raw materials for manufacturing Bio-SRF include agricultural waste, herbaceous plants, waste wood, and vegetable residues. Bio-SRF, which is formed from organic sludge, has a low heating value and a high moisture content. Bio-SRF of livestock waste fuel is blended with different ratios of coal based on heating values when coal is completely combusted in CFBC. In the result of experiment, the combustor efficiency of calculated unburned carbon concentration in the fly ash shows 98.87%, 99.04%, 99.64%, and 99.71% when the multi co-combustion ratio of livestock waste fuel increased from 100/0 (coal/livestock waste) to 70/30 (coal/livestock waste). In addition, the boiler efficiency is shown to be 86.23%, 86.30%, 87.24% and 87.27%. Through the experimental results, we have identified that co-combustion of livestock waste fuel does not affect boiler efficiency. We have systematically investigated and discussed the temperature changes of the internal combustor, compositions of flue gases, solid ash characteristics, and the efficiency of combustion and of the boiler during co-combustion of coal and Bio-SRF. The high affinity of iron-based byproducts for anion removal can facilitate wastewater treatment using membranes functionalized with such byproducts. In this study, a low-cost functional ceramic membrane (LFCM) based on waste cast iron (WCI) was fabricated and applied to remove selenium from aqueous solutions. The effect of roasting (1250 °C) on the raw material properties was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and specific surface area measurements. Upon roasting, zero-valent iron (Fe0) present in WCI was oxidized to hematite (Fe2O3), while the specific surface area of WCI increased from 2.040 to 4.303 m2/g. Raw WCI exhibited the highest Se(IV) and Se(VI) removal capacity among the prepared materials, and Se(IV) could be removed faster and more efficiently than Se(VI). The selenium removal properties of the synthesized LFCM were similar to those of WCI. This membrane could simultaneously and efficiently remove Se(IV) and turbidity-causing substances through filtration. Network traffic data analysis is important for securing our computing environment and data. However, analyzing network traffic data requires tremendous effort because of the complexity of continuously changing network traffic patterns. To assist the user in better understanding and analyzing the network traffic data, an interactive web-based visualization system is designed using multiple coordinated views, supporting a rich set of user interactions. For advancing the capability of analyzing network traffic data, feature extraction is considered along with uncertainty quantification to help the user make precise analyses. The system allows the user to perform a continuous visual analysis by requesting incrementally new subsets of data with updated visual representation. Case studies have been performed to determine the effectiveness of the system. SiO2 etching characteristics were investigated in detail. Patterned SiO2 was etched using radio-frequency capacitively coupled plasma with pulse modulation in a mixture of argon and fluorocarbon gases. Through plasma diagnostic techniques, plasma parameters (radical and electron density, self-bias voltage) were also measured. In this work, we identified an etching process window, where the etching depth is a function of the radical flux. Then, pulse-off time was varied in the two extreme cases: the lowest and the highest radical fluxes. It was observed that increasing pulse-off time resulted in an enhanced etching depth and the reduced etching depth respectively. Dietary diversity is recognized as a key indicator of dietary quality and is known to affect the burden of non-communicable diseases. This study examined the gender-stratified association between dietary diversity score (DDS) and risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in 5468 adults aged 40–69 years during a 12-year follow-up of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). DDS was calculated according to the consumption of the five food groups based on the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for Koreans. The Cox proportional hazard model was used to evaluate MetS risk according to DDS. A higher DDS was negatively associated with the consumption of grains but positively associated with the consumption of fruits and non-salted vegetables. Furthermore, participants with a higher DDS showed higher consumption of fish and milk. Prospectively, a higher DDS was significantly associated with a lower risk of MetS in men (HR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.63–0.92, p < 0.01). In all participants, a higher DDS was inversely associated with the incidence of abdominal obesity (men, HR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.62–0.93, p < 0.01; women, HR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.67–0.94, p < 0.01). Furthermore, men with a higher DDS had a lower risk of hypertriglyceridemia (HR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71–0.97, p < 0.05). The use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the transportation sector is increasing, and boil-off gas (BOG) management systems are considered viable options to increase economic efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at LNG refueling stations. The present study proposed an economically optimized method by investigating four refueling station scenarios, including different BOG management systems. Among the four scenarios, the scenario in which compressed natural gas was produced from BOG had the lowest minimum selling price (MSP) and was the most economical. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses were conducted for the economically optimal scenario, which identified the factors with the most influential impact and their uncertainties on the MSP. Finally, to determine the feasibility of the business through profitability analysis, the net present value, discounted payback period, and present value ratio due to changes in the discount rate were presented, and the discounted cash flow rate of return was found to be 13.22%. As a result of this study, a BOG management system can contribute to improving the economic feasibility for LNG refueling stations by reliquefying BOG and re-selling it (the most efficient way is scenario 4) and will provide an economical guide for countries with much demand for LNG in the transport sector. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common non-communicable diseases causing 18.6 million deaths worldwide. Several studies have revealed that seafood consumption has a protective effect against CVD. This study investigated the correlation between CVD and seafood intake based on a 10-year follow-up of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). The study population, which included 6565 adults age, 55.65 (±8.68), was divided into seafood intake-based tertiles. CVD included myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease. At baseline, participants with low seafood intake also had low eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intakes. Prospectively, hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Seafood intake exhibited a significantly inverse relationship with the cumulative CVD incidence over 10 years regardless of sex (women: log-rank test p < 0.001 and men: log-rank test p < 0.0401). The longitudinal association of low seafood intake with the CVD risk was significantly stronger in female participants after adjusting for confounding variables (HR (95% confidence interval (CI)) = 0.718 (0.519–0.993) p-trend = 0.043). One of the cleaning processes in semiconductor fabrication is the ashing process using oxygen plasma, which has been normally used N2 gas as additive gas to increase the ashing rate, and it is known that the ashing rate is strongly related to the concentration of oxygen radicals measured OES. However, by performing a comprehensive experiment of the O2 plasma ashing process in various N2/O2 mixing ratios and RF powers, our investigation revealed that the tendency of the density measured using only OES did not exactly match the ashing rate. This problematic issue can be solved by considering the plasma parameter, such as electron density. This study can suggest a method inferring the exact maximum condition of the ashing rate based on the plasma diagnostics such as OES, Langmuir probe, and cutoff probe, which might be useful for the next-generation plasma process. sEMG-based gesture recognition is useful for human–computer interactions, especially for technology supporting rehabilitation training and the control of electric prostheses. However, high variability in the sEMG signals of untrained users degrades the performance of gesture recognition algorithms. In this study, the hand posture recognition algorithm and radar plot-based visual feedback training were developed using multichannel sEMG sensors. Ten healthy adults and one bilateral forearm amputee participated by repeating twelve hand postures ten times. The visual feedback training was performed for two days and five days in healthy adults and a forearm amputee, respectively. Artificial neural network classifiers were trained with two types of feature vectors: a single feature vector and a combination of feature vectors. The classification accuracy of the forearm amputee increased significantly after three days of hand posture training. These results indicate that the visual feedback training efficiently improved the performance of sEMG-based hand posture recognition by reducing variability in the sEMG signal. Furthermore, a bilateral forearm amputee was able to participate in the rehabilitation training by using a radar plot, and the radar plot-based visual feedback training would help the amputees to control various electric prostheses. This study aimed to determine the effect of uncertainty in illness and fatigue on the health-related quality of life of patients on dialysis. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among patients on hemodialysis (n = 80) and peritoneal dialysis (n = 81) in Korea. Data were collated using self-reported structured questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis was used to identify those factors affecting the physical and mental health-related quality of life of patients. Patients on peritoneal dialysis reported higher levels of fatigue (p < 0.001). Factors affecting the physical health-related quality of life of patients on dialysis were fatigue (p < 0.001), employment (p = 0.001), and exercise (p = 0.016), thus explaining the observed variance of 37%. Factors affecting mental health-related quality of life were fatigue (p < 0.001), uncertainty (p = 0.004), educational level (p = 0.005), and smoking (p = 0.035). To improve the health-related quality of life of patients on dialysis, clinicians should assess their fatigue levels and plan multidisciplinary interventions to manage it. In addition, education level and employment status should be considered, and tailored interventions should be provided to acquire positive coping strategies and health promotion behaviors to counter disease uncertainty. Cachexia and low muscle mass in motor-complete tetraplegia are associated with poor outcomes. This study aimed to document anthropometric, body composition, and nutritional indices in patients and to assess the effect of a comprehensive rehabilitation nutrition program in cachexia and low muscle mass. For 34 motor-complete tetraplegia in the subacute phase, a comprehensive rehabilitation nutrition program was provided for 8 to 9 weeks. Risk of malnutrition, anthropometric and body composition indices, as well as laboratory tests were assessed upon admission and at discharge. A body mass index of less than 20.2 kg/m2 was used as the cut-off value for obesity. Upon admission, 73.5% of patients were classified as obese, half were at risk of malnutrition, and 29.4% were compatible with cachexia. Compared to the premorbid state, the non-obese group showed greater weight reduction (p < 0.01) and higher prevalence of low muscle mass (p = 0.004) than the obese group. Disease duration was different between groups (p < 0.01). After rehabilitation, malnutrition risk, protein levels, and hemodynamic results improved in both groups (p < 0.05). A significant time × group interaction was observed for muscle mass, skeletal muscle mass, and appendicular lean mass index (p < 0.05). Muscle mass was maintained while fat components increased in both groups. Functional improvement was negatively correlated with an increase in fat components (p < 0.05). A personalized rehabilitation nutrition intervention improved the nutritional status, body composition, and functional outcomes in motor-complete tetraplegia. The increase in muscle mass was associated with functional gain; healthy weight gain or maintenance may improve the level of independence. Simple Summary: This systemic review and meta-analysis compared and analyzed the safety and effectiveness of transoral robotic thyroidectomy on the thyroid tumor with other thyroid approaches. Transoral robotic thyroidectomy showed similar results to other robotic-assisted thyroid surgeries. Compared to a conventional open thyroidectomy, transoral robotic thyroidectomy had longer operational times and hospitalization days, and worse postoperative pain, but a higher cosmetic satiation score. However, more randomized controlled studies need to be included and analyzed. Background: To assess the safety and effectiveness of transoral robotic thyroidectomy (TORT) in thyroid tumor. Methods: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Cochrane database, and Google Scholar up to June 2022. Studies comparing outcomes and complications between TORT and control groups (robotic bilateral axillo-breast, trans-axillary, postauricular approach, conventional open thyroidectomy (OT), and transoral endoscopic approach) were analyzed. Results: Ten studies of 1420 individuals. The operative time (SMD 1.15, 95%CI [0.48; 1.89]) was significantly longer and the number of retrieved lymph nodes (LNs) (SMD −0.27, 95%CI [−0.39; −0.16]) was fewer in TORT than in the control group. The postoperative cosmetic satisfaction score (SMD 0.60, 95%CI [0.28; 0.92]) was statistically higher in TORT than in the control group. In subgroup analysis, there was no significant difference between robotic surgeries. However, TORT had significantly longer operative times (SMD 2.08, 95%CI [0.95; 3.20]) and fewer retrieved LNs (SMD −0.32, 95%CI [−0.46; −0.17]) than OT. TORT satisfied significantly more patients in cosmetic view. However, it increased hospitalization days and postoperative pain on the operation day and first day compared to OT. Conclusions: TORT is not inferior to other robotic-assisted approaches. Its operation time and hospitalization days are longer and postoperative pain is greater than OT, although its cosmetic satisfaction is high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
