Introduction: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is a major surgery associated with significant morbidity and mortality, especially in older adult patients. Malnutrition is a common complication in these patients and is linked to poorer outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the associations between preoperative nutritional status using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and postoperative outcomes in older adult patients who underwent PD. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 363 older adult patients who underwent PD. The preoperative GNRI was calculated based on serum albumin levels and body mass index. GNRI ≤ 82, GNRI 83 to ≤98, and GNRI > 98 were classified as severely malnourished, moderately/mildly malnourished, and no malnourishment, respectively. Perioperative data, including demographics, comorbidities, and postoperative complications, were collected. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess the associations between the GNRI and outcomes such as length of hospital stay, postoperative complications, and overall survival. Results: Patients with a higher GNRI were more likely to experience Clavien–Dindo grade ≥ 3b postoperative complications (42.1% vs. 22.0% vs. 14.1%; p = 0.027) and pulmonary complications (26.3% vs. 11.9% vs. 4.2%; p = 0.016). These patients also stayed at the hospital for a longer duration (17.0% vs. 16.0% vs. 11.0%; p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis confirmed that the GNRI was an independent predictor of adverse outcomes, even after adjusting for other confounding factors. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the importance of preoperative nutritional assessment in older adult patients undergoing PD. Patients with low GNRI scores are at increased risk of postoperative complications and prolonged recovery. These results underscore the need for targeted nutritional interventions and regular monitoring of these patients. The development of creativity plays a decisive role in the future development of human life as it stimulates divergent thinking and grants the critical ability to innovate and solve problems. Therefore, the question of how to encourage students' creativity has also attracted the attention of related research in various fields. Our study used the Scratch visual programming tool to allow students to create their own digital games. We used different technological devices as external stimuli during the research process to stimulate students' creative ideas. We provided four control devices: a keyboard and mouse, PicoBoard, a 65-inch touch screen, and a Wii remote control for 92 fifth-grade students in four S-shaped classes. After a 12-week experimental process, students designed their original Scratch game. The results of the study found that differences in device properties correspond to different items of creativity: devices highly relevant to students' life experiences improve the flexibility and elaboration of creativity. Innovative controls promote creative originality. The freedom of device control can increase the fluency of creativity. Therefore, providing control devices with different properties will allow teachers to establish learning environments that foster creativity. In recent years, the display information of head-up displays for vehicles has gradually developed from single-depth to multi-depth. To reduce the workload of driving and the number of eye adjustments, researchers use the visual perception of human eyes to realize the image information integrated with the real world. In this study, HoloLens2 is used to demonstrate head-up displays of different depths. An electroencephalogram, an electro-ophthalmogram, and a NASA-TLX questionnaire were used to evaluate the fatigue of drivers during long-term driving. As medical technology continues to evolve, the importance of real-time feedback from physiological signals is increasingly being recognized. The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has facilitated seamless connectivity between sensors and virtual networks, enabling the integration of thoughtful medical care with real-time feedback capabilities. This project uses cloud storage technology and cloud software algorithms to enable data sharing and real-time feedback. Its main focus is to provide a system for real-time feedback on physiological signals and sleep quality analysis. The system uses smart wristbands and smart mobile devices to collect, transmit, and analyze physiological data. During sleep, users wear these devices, which capture and analyze their physiological data. The analyzed data are then stored in a cloud-based database. The research involves studying sleep quality and determining optimal sleep quality parameters based on the data stored in the cloud database. These parameters are designed to improve sleep quality. They are then transmitted to a mobile sleep aid device to control light conditions. The sleep aid software used in previous generations of mobile devices is the basis for expanding the integration of the sleep detection system. By combining the software of a mobile device platform with that of a smart wearable device, data can be obtained to monitor the wearer's movements, such as turning over and heartbeat. The monitoring aspect includes tracking the turning time, distance, and speed, while the heartbeat monitoring includes detecting changes in heart rate, frequency, and interval using photoplethysmography (PPG) and smart wearable devices. Subsequently, artificial intelligence methods are employed to conduct statistical analysis and categorize the gathered extensive dataset. Computational thinking skills are increasingly required for working with information technology products and are considered core learning objectives in science and technology curriculums across all grades. However, there is yet to be a curriculum model for computational thinking, and many teachers are still figuring out this issue and designing courses to cultivate these skills in students. We planned 8-course periods for 108 curriculums, using the Bebras International Computational Thinking Challenge and programming learning motivation scale to evaluate game-based lessons from Code.org. The grade-3 and -4 students were randomly divided into self-regulation and guided-learning groups, and 153 valid data were analyzed using paired t tests and ANCOVA. As a result, we found the learning behaviors of the two groups of students to be worthy of further exploration in terms of time management and help-seeking learning strategies. Code.org's game-based lessons effectively engage students to complete most of the course, addressing the usual course completion issues when self-paced. The self-regulation group spent more time in peer discussions and had better learning outcomes than the guided-learning group. Compared to other techniques, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) has the advantage of having details of the expression abundance of all transcripts in a single run. In this study, we used RNA-Seq to monitor the maturity and dynamic characteristics of in vitro hepatocyte cultures. Hepatocytes, including mature hepatocytes and small hepatocytes, were analyzed in vitro using RNA-Seq and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The results demonstrated that the gene expression profiles measured by RNA-Seq showed a similar trend to the expression profiles measured by qPCR, and can be used to infer the success of in vitro hepatocyte cultures. The results of the differential analysis, which compared mature hepatocytes against small hepatocytes, revealed 836 downregulated and 137 upregulated genes. In addition, the success of the hepatocyte cultures could be explained by the gene list screened from the adopted gene enrichment test. In summary, we demonstrated that RNA-Seq could become an effective method for monitoring the whole transcriptome of hepatocyte cultures and provide a more comprehensive list of factors related to the differentiation of small hepatocytes into mature hepatocytes. Simple Summary: New-generation anthraquinone derivatives attached with different heterocycles and bearing chloroacetamidines in the side chains have been synthesized to reduce side effects and drug resistance. In this study, we identified the cellular target of the studied compounds through ligand binding assays and in silico simulations. Our results illustrate that the studied compounds bound to and targeted the tumor-associated NADH oxidase (tNOX) in oral cancer cells. tNOX is a growth-related protein and is found to be expressed in cancer cells but not in non-transformed cells, and its knockdown by RNA interference in tumor cells overturns cancer phenotypes, supporting its role in cellular growth. We also identified that tNOX bound to the studied compounds and underwent degradation, which was correlated with apoptosis induction in oral cancer cells. Anthraquinone-based intercalating compounds, namely doxorubicin and mitoxantrone, have been used clinically based on their capacity to bind DNA and induce DNA damage. However, their applications have been limited by side effects and drug resistance. New-generation anthraquinone derivatives fused with different heterocycles have been chemically synthesized and screened for higher anticancer potency. Among the compounds reported in our previous study, 4,11-bis(2-(2-chloroacetamidine)ethylamino)anthra[2,3-b]thiophene-5,10-dione dihydrochloride (designated 2c) was found to be apoptotic, but the direct cellular target responsible for the cytotoxicity remained unknown. Here, we report the synthesis and anticancer properties of two other derivatives, 4,11-bis(2-(2-chloroacetamidine)ethylamino)naphtho[2,3-f]indole-5,10-dione dihydrochloride (2a) and 4,11-bis(2-(2-chloroacetamidine)ethylamino)-2-methylanthra[2,3-b]furan-5,10-dione dihydrochloride (2b). We sought to identify and validate the protein target(s) of these derivatives in oral cancer cells, using molecular docking simulations and cellular thermal shift assays (CETSA). Our CETSA results illustrate that these derivatives targeted the tumor-associated NADH oxidase (tNOX, ENOX2), and their direct binding downregulated tNOX in p53-functional SAS and p53-mutated HSC-3 cells. Interestingly, the compounds targeted and downregulated tNOX to reduce SIRT1 deacetylase activity and increase Ku70 acetylation, which triggers c-Flip ubiquitination and induces apoptosis in oral cancer cells. Simple Summary: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most lethal malignancies across the world. More than 80% patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage with limited treatment options. PC has the highest frequency of developing cancer cachexia (CC)–sarcopenia (SC) syndrome, but there is no optimal efficient intervention for CC or SC targeting their complicated biological and irreversible processes. As a result, identifying the clinicopathological features and patient characteristics in each advanced PC patient with CC and/or SC is urgently needed to distinguish different wasting phenotypes or body composition and thus support precision medicine and achieve optimal outcomes. We performed a retrospective cohort study of 232 advanced PC patients to determine the differential clinical characteristics of CC and SC and the overlap of CC- or SC-related factors in each patient. The impacts of CC, SC, and their relevant factors on the outcomes of PC patients were also evaluated. Pancreatic cancer (PC) has the highest frequency of developing cancer cachexia (CC)–sarcopenia (SC) syndrome, which negatively influences patients' outcome, quality of life, and tolerance/response to treatments. However, the clinical impacts of CC, SC, and their associated factors on outcomes for advanced PC has yet to be fully investigated. A total of 232 patients were enrolled in this study for the retrospective review of their clinical information and the measurement of skeletal muscle areas at the third lumber vertebra by computed tomography scan to identify CC or SC. The association and concurrent occurrence of clinicopathological features in each patient, prevalence rates, and prognosis with the CC or SC were calculated. CC and SC were observed in 83.6% (n = 194) and 49.1% (n = 114) of PC patients, respectively. Low hemoglobin levels more often occurred in CC patients than in non-CC patients (p = 0.014). Older age (p = 0.000), female gender (p = 0.024), low body mass index (BMI) values (p = 0.004), low hemoglobin levels (p = 0.036), and low albumin levels (p = 0.001) were more often found in SC patients than in non-SC patients. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that CC was an independent poor prognostic factor of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival for all patients, the chemotherapy (C/T) subgroup, and the high BMI subgroup. Meanwhile, SC was an independent predictor of poor OS for the subgroups of C/T or high BMI but not for all patients. These findings reveal the clinical differences for CC and SC and provide useful information for predicting the prognosis of advanced PC patients and conducting personalized medicine. Falling is a major cause of personal injury and accidental death worldwide, in particular for the elderly. For aged care, a falling alarm system is highly demanded so that medical aid can be obtained immediately when the fall accidents happen. Previous studies on fall detection lacked practical considerations to deal with real-world situations, including the camera's mounting angle, lighting differences between day and night, and the privacy protection for users. In our experiments, IR-depth images and thermal images were used as the input source for fall detection; as a result, detailed facial information is not captured by the system for privacy reasons, and it is invariant to the lighting conditions. Due to the different occurrence rates between fall accidents and other normal activities, supervised learning approaches may suffer from the problem of data imbalance in the training phase. Accordingly, in this study, anomaly detection is performed using unsupervised learning approaches so that the models were trained only with the normal cases while the fall accident was defined as an anomaly event. The proposed system takes sequential frames as the inputs to predict future frames based on a GAN structure, and it provides (1) multi-subject detection, (2) real-time fall detection triggered by motion, (3) a solution to the situation that subjects were occluded after falling, and (4) a denoising scheme for depth images. The problem of sleep has become a disease of modern civilization, and in order to alleviate sleep problems and improve sleep quality, related research methods are constantly updated, and there are more and more ways to address these problems. In this paper, we propose a dynamic assisted sleep light that adjusts the color temperature, illuminance, and frequency of change by controlling the backlight of the smart mobile device, so that the user experiences an improved quality of sleep. In this study, the methods of subjective questionnaire survey and non-subjective physiological parameter measurement were adopted for analysis. Featured Application: Autonomic Nervous System under Dynamic Lighting Sleep Environment. The quality of sleep during lunch breaks will affect the work efficiency, concentration, and mood of workers, and then increase the performance of workers. In this study, Dynamic CCT lighting is proposed as a method to control sleep quality, and a novel hypnotic lighting system is developed according to the experimental design. Pulse width modulation(PWM) is used for controlling sleep lights and adjusting and controlling the spectrum intensity of polychromatic LED to realize the color mixing, which conforms to CCT, illumination, uniformity, and other parameters in the experimental design. The control group of this study is in a dark room, and the experimental group is given dim light and Dynamic CCT lighting. Through volunteer psychological questionnaire evaluation, objective Sleep Wrist Actigraphy and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) are used analyzing sleep quality and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). The result is found that the sleep environment with Dynamic CCT lighting is better than that with Dim light in three kinds of sleep lighting environments, while the sleep environment of Dynamic CCT lighting is very similar to that of a dark room. A new optical encryption algorithm, called the random-phase encryption algorithm, is proposed in this study. When this algorithm was applied in constructing computer-generated holograms, the out-of-focus image crosstalk was effectively reduced, and the image quality was greatly enhanced. In this study, the researchers encrypted each multi-depth or multi-view random phase sub-image with the phase-locked key to generate multi-channel encryption phase information. During the reconstruction, the switch of the phase-locked key of the sub-image was found to achieve different image reconstruction effects with different views or depths. This algorithm proved to substantially reduce the out-of-focus image crosstalk and to enhance the reconstruction quality of the original computer holography without concerning the mutual interference among the information of each view for multi-view and multi-depth holograms. In this paper, a method for automatically separating the mixed circular fringe patterns based on the fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) analysis is proposed. Considering the mixed two-dimensional (2-D) Gaussian-based circular fringe patterns, detected by using an image sensor, we propose a method that can efficiently determine the number and parameters of each separated fringe patterns by using the FrFT due to the observed higher sparsity in the frequency domain than that in the spatial domain. First, we review the theory of FrFT and the properties of the 2-D circular fringe patterns. By searching the spectral intensities of the various fractional orders in the FrFT projected along both the frequency axes, the proposed method can automatically determine the total fringe number, the central position, binary phase, and the maximum fringe width of each 2-D circular fringe pattern. In the experimental results, both the computer-simulated and optically mixed fringe patterns are used to verify the proposed method. In addition, the additive Gaussian noise effects on the proposed method are investigated. Curcumin and curcuminoids have been discussed frequently due to their promising functional groups (such as scaffolds of α,β-unsaturated β-diketone, α,β-unsaturated ketone and β′-hydroxy-α,β-unsaturated ketone connected with aromatic rings on both sides) that play an important role in various bioactivities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferation and anticancer activity. A series of novel curcuminoid derivatives (a total of 55 new compounds) and three reference compounds were synthesized with good yields using three-step organic synthesis. The anti-proliferative activities of curcumin derivatives were examined for six human cancer cell lines: HeLaS3, KBvin, MCF-7, HepG2, NCI-H460 and NCI-H460/MX20. Compared to the IC50 values of all the synthesized derivatives, most α,β-unsaturated ketones displayed potent anti-proliferative effects against all six human cancer cell lines, whereas β′-hydroxy-α,β-unsaturated ketones and α,β-unsaturated β-diketones presented moderate anti-proliferative effects. Two potent curcuminoid derivatives were found among all the novel derivatives and reference compounds: (E)-5-hydroxy-7-phenyl-1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)hept-1-en-3-one (compound 3) and (1E,4E)-1,7-bis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)hepta-1,4-dien-3-one (compound MD12a). These were selected for further analysis after the evaluation of their anti-proliferative effects against all human cancer cell lines. The results of apoptosis assays revealed that the number of dead cells was increased in early apoptosis and late apoptosis, while cell proliferation was also decreased after applying various concentrations of (E)-5-hydroxy-7-phenyl-1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)hept-1-en-3-one (compound 3) and (1E,4E)-1,7-bis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)hepta-1,4-dien-3-one (compound MD12a) to MCF-7 and HpeG2 cancer cells. Analysis of the gene expression arrays showed that three genes (GADD45B, SESN2 and BBC3) were correlated with the p53 pathway. From the quantitative PCR analysis, it was seen that (1E,4E)-1,7-bis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)hepta-1,4-dien-3-one (compound MD12a) effectively induced the up-regulated expression of GADD45B, leading to the suppression of MCF-7 cancer cell formation and cell death. On the purpose of detecting communities, many algorithms have been proposed for the disjointed community sets. The major challenge of detecting communities from the real-world problems is to determine the overlapped communities. The overlapped vertices belong to some communities, so it is difficult to be detected using the modularity maximization approach. The major problem is that the overlapping structure barely be found by maximizing the fuzzy modularity function. In this paper, we firstly introduce a node weight allocation problem to formulate the overlapping property in the community detection. We propose an extension of modularity, which is a better measure for overlapping communities based on reweighting nodes, to design the proposed algorithm. We use the genetic algorithm for solving the node weight allocation problem and detecting the overlapping communities. To fit the properties of various instances, we introduce three refinement strategies to increase the solution quality. In the experiments, the proposed method is applied on both synthetic and real networks, and the results show that the proposed solution can detect the nontrivial valuable overlapping nodes which might be ignored by other algorithms. We propose an angle multiplexing method for optics-based image encryption using a phase-only computer-generated hologram (POCGH) in the tilted Fresnel transform (TFrT) domain. Modified Gerchberg-Saxton algorithms, based on the three types of rotation manipulation in both the hologram and reconstruction planes, are used with their corresponding TFrT parameters to extract the phase-only functions (POFs) of the target images. All the extracted POFs are then phase-modulated and summed to obtain the final POCGH, which is capable of multiplexing and avoiding overlap in the reconstructed images. The computer simulation results show that the images corresponding to the various rotation manipulations at the hologram and image reconstruction planes can be successfully restored with high correlation coefficients. Due to the encrypted nature of the multiplexed images, a higher system security level can be achieved, as the images can only be correctly displayed when all the required parameters in the TFrT are available. We aimed to evaluate the response rate of migraines by using anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (anti-CGRP) for patients with migraines. We searched three main medical databases up to 29 March 2019. No restriction on language and publication time were applied. Eligible trials included randomized clinical trials investigating a 50%, 75%, and 100% response rate of migraine patients after anti-CGRP intervention. The collected data were dichotomous, and risk ratios (RRs) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to present the quantitative synthesis results. The systematic review identified 16 eligible randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with 9439 patients. Eight of the 16 trials with 2516 patients reported a 50% response rate, and the pooled results showed a significant benefit from anti-CGRP. However, the effects seem to gradually reduce from the first month (RR 1.99, 95% CI 1.59 to 2.49) to the third month (RR 1.48, 95% CI 1.26 to 1.75) of treatment. The magnitude of effect was influenced by the type of anti-CGRP, according to the test for differences between subgroups (I-square = 53%). The funnel plots and Egger's tests did not show serious small study effects in the results. In conclusion, the current evidences confirmed that anti-CGRP treatment can reduce migraine pain in the short term (within three months), but the long-term effect should be investigated in the future. Moreover, its effects may be influenced by the type and dose of anti-CGRP. Therefore, future studies should make direct comparisons among anti-CGRP medications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chondrosarcoma is a highly malignant cartilage-forming bone tumor that has the capacity to invade locally and cause distant metastasis. Moreover, chondrosarcoma is intrinsically resistant to conventional chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The novel benzofuran derivative, BL-038 (2-amino-3-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-6-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran-4-yl acetate), has been evaluated for its anticancer effects in human chondrosarcoma cells. BL-038 caused cell apoptosis in two human chondrosarcoma cell lines, JJ012 and SW1353, but not in primary chondrocytes. Treatment of chondrosarcoma with BL-038 also induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Furthermore, BL-038 decreased mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and changed mitochondrial-related apoptosis, by downregulating the anti-apoptotic activity members (Bcl-2, Bcl-xL) and upregulating pro-apoptotic members (Bax, Bak) of the B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family of proteins, key regulators of the apoptotic machinery in cells. These results demonstrate that in human chondrosarcoma cells, the apoptotic and cytotoxic effects of BL-038 are mediated by the intrinsic mitochondria-mediated apoptotic pathway, which in turn causes the release of cytochrome c, the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3, and the cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), to elicit apoptosis response.
